Legends roll back the years

An Ex-West Ham United XI triumphed 6-4 in a charity match for Great Ormond
Street Children's Hospital
28.05.2013

Hammers heroes of years gone by rolled back the years as an Ex-West Ham
United XI triumphed 6-4 in a charity match for Great Ormond Street
Children's Hospital. Iain Dowie netted a hat-trick, while Rob Lee scored
twice and Stuart Slater once as the former West Ham stars roared into an
early 3-0 lead. The Great Ormond Street team fought back, but the
ex-professionals showed their class to run out winners at the end of an
entertaining 90 minutes. On a night where the famous London hospital was the
real winner, a host of former Boleyn Ground favourites returned to east
London for a thrilling evening of football.
Managed by Tony Cottee, the Ex-West Ham United XI included Boys of '86 stars
Frank McAvennie, Alan Dickens, George Parris and Alan Devonshire, as well as
Steve Potts, Martin Allen, Paul Allen, Lee Bowyer, Don Hutchison, Kenny
Brown, Ian Pearce, Allen McKnight, Dowie, Lee and Slater. McAvennie spent
most of last week at the Boleyn Ground, first running his popular annual
pitch event before pulling on the claret and blue one more time for Friday's
charity match.
"I do my pitch event every year, which runs over three days and it great,"
he explained. "Then I got to play in the Great Ormond Street, which was for
a brilliant cause. I got to run about - I dpn't know how far or for how
long, but I went out there and had some fun! "It was good to see a few of
the lads from the 1986 side, so it was good fun."

Julian Dicks took charge of the Great Ormond Street side, which was made up
of supporters, with the two teams taking to the pitch to the strains of
'Bubbles' and cheers from friends and family members sitting in the Alpari
Stand. A charity raffle held following the match saw a large funds raised
for the charity. For those who missed out on Friday's match, there are still
more opportunities to play on the Boleyn Ground pitch this summer with
Football for Fans. An Adults 5-a-side tournament will take place on Sunday 2
June, while West Ham favourite Parris will host his eighth annual
Mini-Soccer Children's Tournament on Saturday 15 June.

Stadium conversion approved
WHUFC.com
The Olympic Stadium planning application was given the green light at a
special meeting on Tuesday night
28.05.2013

West Ham United's historic move to the Olympic Stadium has taken another
major step forward after the E20 LLP were granted planning permission to
commence the stunning conversion of the Olympic Stadium at a Planning
Committee meeting in Stratford on Tuesday evening. The Club can now work
closely with the E20 partnership to commence the developments that will see
the Stadium upgraded to a 54,000 all-seater UEFA category 4 football Stadium
- the highest category of football stadium possible in the world. Approval
has also been granted for the installation of an innovative retractable
seating solution on all four sides of the ground bringing fans closer to the
action and the atmospheric, transparent roof that, at 84m, will become the
largest-spanning tensile roof in the world. The approved, ambitious
proposals also include first-class hospitality suites, the relocation inside
the turnstile line of key facilities such as the concessions and toilets (as
at other traditional football stadia), landscaping and a distinctive new
building that is set to become the Hammers' exclusive ticket office and
flagship Club Store. The presence of these buildings will ensure that
supporters continue to enjoy their direct relationship with the Club in new
and enhanced facilities in the surrounds of the stunning Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park. West Ham United Vice-Chairman Karren Brady said: "This is
another key milestone on our journey to Stratford and my Board and I are
delighted with the decision. "We always knew that the innovative plans for
the Olympic Stadium could create a globally-recognised football stadium and
we were confident that planning permission would be granted to allow the
conversion work to begin.
"For me and my team the hard work is only just beginning. This is an
incredible opportunity to create a world-class stadium for West Ham
supporters that will exceed their expectations and the chance to really
deliver a lasting legacy for London."

The approved planning application will now be referred to Mayor of London,
Boris Johnson, for final ratification before work on the stunning
transformation can get underway later this year. Architectural drawings of
West Ham United's new home at the Olympic Stadium post-conversion were
revealed and presented in person to supporters by the Vice-Chairman on
whufc.com back in April.

Reid is the players' pick

Winston Reid was delighted to scoop the Players' Player of the Year award
for 2012/13
28.05.2013

Winston Reid was not only chosen as West Ham United's Hammer of the Year by
the Club's supporters, but he was also voted as the Players' Player of the
Year. The centre-back was rewarded for being a model of consistency and
professionalism by receiving the endorsement of his squad-mates. "It is
quite an accolade to be voted Player of the Year by your colleagues and I'm
very proud of it," said the No2, who was presented with his award by sponsor
Ark Build PLC's Joseph Finlay. "When you are voted by your team-mates for
doing a good job throughout the season, it's a very humbling thing and I'm
very pleased about it."

Reid said his job had been made easier by his central defensive colleagues
James Collins and James Tomkins, in particular, as well as his team-mates
all over the pitch. "We have got some good centre-halves at the Club and,
whoever plays, they can do the job. No matter who I play with, it makes my
job a lot easier.
"This season, everyone has done really well. When you get players playing
well, it's going to help the Club and last year we were fortunate enough to
get back to the Premier League and this year we've been fortunate enough to
stay there."

Reid is currently enjoying a well-earned summer break at home with friends
and family in Denmark - the country he moved to with his mother as a child.

Planning permission has been granted for the E20 partnership's conversion
plans for the Olympic Stadium. The plans to transform the Olympic Stadium
into a 54,000 seater football ground were approved by the borough of
Newham's planning committee on Tuesday evening. Included in the plans is the
installation of retractable seating over the running track, the creation of
hospitality facilities, the moving of concessions and toilet facilities to
within the stadium turnstiles and the construction of an 84 metre span roof.
Other facilities to be constructed include club offices and ticketing
facilities as well as a new stadium merchandising store. The plans will have
to be sent to Boris Johnson for the Mayor to give his final ratification
before the construction work can commence. Final ratification is expected to
take place in time for the work to start later during 2013.

It's oh so quiet.....

Although the Club is, no doubt, beavering away behind the scenes to tie up
new signings for the 2013/14 season, it's a bit quiet out there on the
speculation front. The transfer window doesn't officially open until 1 July,
although clubs can announce deals that have been agreed before that date. So
far defender Razvan Rat is the only player confirmed as coming in for next
term, whilst Carlton Cole has been told that he won't be offered a new deal.
The most high-profile deal on the table is, of course, the bid to convert
Andy Carroll's loan to a permanent deal. With the clubs having agreed a fee
it is now down to the player to decide whether he wants to stay, though with
him being on holiday for a week or two yet we'll have to be patient for that
one to be concluded.

In amongst the paper talk we've also been linked with a move for Liverpool
midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. Shelvey was on the Club's books as a kid before
leaving for Charlton where he became the club's youngest ever player and
youngest ever goalscorer. We're sure that things will hot up over the next
few weeks and we'll be aiming to bring you news as soon as it happens.

A number of clubs are weighing up moves for Tottenham's David Bentley
Last Updated: May 28, 2013 3:33pm
SSN

Sky Sports understands David Bentley is set to leave Tottenham this summer
with a number of clubs chasing his signature. Bentley spent this season out
on loan at Russian side FC Rostov and Blackburn after finding himself down
the pecking order at White Hart Lane. The former Blackburn and Arsenal man
decided to go out on loan in a bid to get some regular first-team action.
The 28-year-old is unlikely to find himself in Andre Villas-Boas' plans next
season and it seems both parties are considering a parting of the ways. A
number of clubs are thought to be monitoring Bentley's situation and are
ready to move for him this summer. The likes of West Brom, West Ham and
Wigan are all believed to be admirers of Bentley, and are keen on signing
him if he does leave Tottenham.

Mad about you: West Ham poised to move for Bordeaux and Senegal defender
Ludovic Sane

The Mirror

West Ham are set to make a move for Bordeaux defender Ludovic Sane. Sam
Allardyce is keen to strengthen and add more experience to his backline.
Sane, 26, has played over 60 games for the French club and has been one of
their star performers. The Senegal international fancies a move to the
Premier League and reports in France claim he could leave the club after
Friday night's French Cup Final clash with Evian. The Hammers' co-owner
David Sullivan has already stated that they could bring in up to five new
signings during the summer. Romania defender and captain Razvan Rat has
already completed a move to Upton Park, and Sane could be the next big
arrival in east London. Here's Sane being all 6ft 3in tall and scoring with
a header (and there we were expecting him to be the Senegalese Alan
Wright!)...

Carlton Cole set to snub Southampton, Stoke and Hull for MLS
23 May 2013 22:30
The Mirror

Carlton Cole is turning his back on the Premier League for a future in Major
League Soccer. The former Chelsea and England hit-man, freed by West Ham
after seven years at Upton Park, is heading for America - despite interest
from the top flight. Southampton, Stoke and newly-promoted Hull are all keen
to offer Cole, 29, deals following his release by the Hammers. Leeds and
relegated QPR, who will be Championship rivals next season, also want to
sign the Croydon-born striker. But Cole, who notched 57 goals in 237 outings
for the Hammers, has decided to continue his career in the United States. DC
United, San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo are all ready to tempt Cole
with a lucrative contract offer, but LA Galaxy is his preferred destination.
David Beckham's old club are favourites to land Cole and are expected to
open talks with him in the next 24 hours.

defender made his debut for the Catalan giants in a 2-1 defeat to Atletico

his campaign for West Ham TV.

Matt, can you sum up the season in a few words?

MJ - "It was very pleasing. It's been a good achievement to finish in the
top ten."

What was the highlight of the season for you?

MJ - "Probably getting on the scoresheet early doors in the season [at QPR].
It's a relief to get the first goal out of the way and just overall to feel
that I've been involved in the squad and the team, and show everyone what
I've got."

What was your best performance of the campaign?

MJ - "I'm not sure. I think as a team we played extremely well against
Chelsea at home. That was a fantastic performace - I think we've played well
as a team at home all season so it's hard to pick one game."

Joe Cole Targets an England Recall!
By S J Chandos
West Ham Till I Die

It was with interest that I read reports that Joe Cole is targeting an
England recall next season and a possible place in the 2014 England World
Cup Squad for Brazil. The reports emanate from a Radio 5 Live interview, in
the course of which Cole said:

'I'm hoping if I can keep fit to get back into the England squad and have
another go. Playing for your country is the pinnacle. You never know.
There's another World Cup in a year's time.'

The odds are against Joe Cole securing an international recall, but it is
not an impossible proposition. Cole is a unique talent and he showed enough
last season to suggest that he can still cut the mustard at PL level. When
he arrived at the club last January, Cole's general and match fitness were
clearly not at a level one would hope to see. This was down to his situation
at Liverpool, where he played too infrequently. The lack of fitness probably
contributed to him picking up some of the injury niggles that he suffered.
Joe Cole's objective this summer must be to get fit, have a solid pre-season
and play regularly next season. If he can do that he has every chance of
recapturing his form and deploying his greater experience to make it count.

Personally, I find his ambition admirable. Joe Cole is still a player who
strives to achieve things in the game. He is clearly not at West Ham to
'tick over' and have a last 'pay day.' And I am comforted by the thought
that the only route back to the England squad is via high level performance
at West Ham. As I stated, it is unlikely, but not impossible. I think he
still has the ability, but the variable factor is whether he can
successfully manage and maintain his fitness, something that he acknowledges
in the above quote. He is still only 31 years of age and that is hardly a
barrier to his ambition. Many older players bring not only touch and vision,
but also invaluable experience to their international sides. Remember the
impact that 36 year old Pirlo had for Italy in the 2012 European
Championships, where his vision and passing was outstanding. What is to say
that a fit and inform Joe Cole could not play a similar role for both West
Ham and England? Indeed, I believe that we need to add another midfield play
maker to the squad as competition and cover. But for me, Joe Cole can be our
first choice play maker and successfully pull the midfield strings for us
next season. Provided he can stay fit. Only then will he be able to advance
his case for an international recall.

Could another of the West Ham 'golden generation' of the late 1990s re-join
us this summer? There have been consistent rumours that Rio Ferdinand could
be on his way back to Upton Park, if his tenure at Man Utd comes to an end
and will can strike a deal on his wages. He would certainly bring extra
experience to the back line and, as he proved last season, remains an
accomplished centre half. Will the arrival of David Moyes at Old Trafford
see Rio surplus to requirements under the new managerial regime? If so, Sam
Allardyce has already given notice of his interest, if a deal can be struck
on the financial aspects.

It will also be interesting to see if Sam Allardyce brings in another keeper
this summer. If Stephen Henderson is sold then a new addition will surely
follow. If this transpires, who will we target? Could Allardyce renew last
season's alleged interest in Paul Robinson? Or what about the interest in
Man Utd's Danish international keeper, Anders Lindegaard? Both could do a
job for us and with Jussi, and young Raphael Spiegel, should form a handy
stable of keepers.

Finally, it was a pity that Zola's Watford fell at the final hurdle and lost
in such a fashion, with the play-off final being settled by a penalty kick.
Zola has proven this season hat he is an able manager. Zola obviously got
the West Ham job too early and then the difficult financial and other
circumstances at the club contrived to undermine him. It is a mark of the
man's character that in a recent interview he was not in the least bit
bitter about his time at West Ham and freely acknowledged his inexperience
at that time. Zola is a top guy and, although he has suffered a set back in
yesterday's play-off Final, he will undoubtedly learn from it and come back
all the stronger. What is the betting that Zola's Watford go all the way to
the PL next season?

SJ. Chandos.

West Ham Season Review - Part 1 Goalkeepers
Posted by Peter Thorne and Vinny Ryan
ESPN

After a bit of a nervy start, Jussi Jaaskelainen settled in and became a
solid No.1 for West Ham. To keep things ticking over here during the long,
hot summer at the ESPN FC West Ham blog, we will be taking a close look at
the 2012-13 season, and the players that played an important part in getting
West Ham into the top half of the Premiership while -- hopefully anyway! --
keeping you up-to-date with all the latest news and transfer activity from
Upton Park.
Compiled with a considerable amount of input from my blog colleague, Vinny
Ryan, we'll look at how the players performed over the campaign and
highlight what we hope we can expect to see at the Boleyn next season. As
ever, we look forward to input from Hammers' fans around the globe on who
you want to see at Upon Park and where you think things can be improved.

First off then, a look at the goalkeeping situation:

Jussi Jaaskelainen

Jussi Jaaskelainen was signed on a free transfer having been released by
Bolton Wanderers, and at 37 years old and having lost his place in a Bolton
side who were relegated, I don't think there were many fans who hadn't
severe reservations about him replacing fan favourite Robert Green as the
Hammers' number one.

Despite a clean sheet on his debut against Aston Villa, there were questions
about how the side would fare with him between the sticks when the away trip
to Swansea proved to be a bit of a defensive disaster with the Finn at fault
for the first goal.

Another clean sheet came in his next game at home to Fulham, but this time
questions about his kicking were now being asked after a number of wayward
clearances.

But the statistics looked good after four Premiership games when Jussi had
kept an impressive three clean sheets and against Newcastle on 12th November
he made it five with his form having settled down.

Looking back on the season the main talking points about Jaaskelainen were
mostly positives. Many claimed to always be 'unsure' about him and ask
questions about signing another keeper, but as the season went on he got
better and better, with a stunning display of shot-stopping against
Tottenham at Upton Park in which he was awarded man of the match, and this
despite conceding three goals.

With the Hammers' other senior keeper Stephen Henderson sent out on-loan for
much of the season, there was no doubt that Jussi was the number one keeper
at the club. He was awarded a new one-year deal in April with Sam Allardyce
having no fears about his age and citing Brad Friedel as an example to
highlight this.

The question last summer was how much West Ham were going to miss Green but
after 11 clean sheets and a host of excellent performances (which actually
made him a late runner for Hammer of the year), I think we can say with
certainty that the team did not miss the England stopper -- who had a
nightmare of a season on his own -- and Jaaskelainen has proved to be an
excellent signing. Perhaps it's also further proof of how Allardyce has made
decisions that were initially thought to be suspect but which have proven to
be correct over time.

Appearences: League-38; Cup-2; Bookings-2

Verdict: After a few early mistakes, his season got better as it progressed
and Jussi was one of West Ham's best and most consistent players throughout
the season.

Stephen Henderson

It was thought by many that Stephen Henderson would be the Hammers' number
one goal keeper by the end of the season. Based on his signing last season,
his inclusion in a number of pre-season games as a starter and that
Jaaskelainen was 37, soon to be 38 years old, it seemed only a matter of
time before Henderson got his opportunity.

But nothing of the sort transpired and it was Jaaskelainen who began the
season in goal with Henderson only getting time as a starter against Crewe
and Wigan in the League Cup. The game against Wigan saw him concede four
goals and while not directly at fault for the goals, his overall performance
could be described as a little shaky.

Soon after the Wigan defeat in the League Cup he was shipped out on-loan to
Championship side Ipswich Town. Many fans were a little surprised at the
move, given that the club only had young keeper Rapheal Spiegel as a
back-up, but it was clear that Henderson was not going to feature in the
plans of Allardyce.

Having played 16 times for Ipswich, he came back to West Ham in January and
was on the bench for the two league games against Arsenal and Fulham but
re-joined Ipswich on deadline day. Henderson was again recalled, this time
in March where he was on the bench for all of the Hammers' remaining games.

So surprised by these events were some fans that there have been rumours
that Henderson had simply been signed by the club to help out Portsmouth and
perhaps prevent them from going bust which would have impacted West Ham's
points tally in the Championship last season, although this is surely just
mischievous conjecture.

The facts are though that Henderson looks very unlikely to push Jaaskelainen
out now and with West Ham comfortably finishing in the top half of the
Premier League, the Hammers can surely attract a bigger name now to compete
and eventually succeed the popular Finn. I expect to see Henderson move on
in the summer.

Appearances: Cup-2

Verdict: Henderson has never given the impression he was ready to take over
as No: 1 at Upton Park and his best option now seems to lie away from the
Hammers.

Sir Trevor honours hero Moore
WHUFC.com
Sir Trevor Brooking returned to school to honour fellow West Ham United
legend Bobby Moore MBE
26.05.2013

Sir Trevor Brooking went back to school to honour fellow West Ham United
legend Bobby Moore MBE this week. Sir Trevor returned to Ripple Primary
School in Barking - the school both he and Moore attended as young children
- to unveil an plaque commemorating the life and sporting achievements of
the late Hammers and England captain. Moore attended the school, in Suffolk
Road, between 1946 and 1952, while Sir Trevor was a pupil there during the
1950s. Both learned the skills that turned them into Boleyn Ground
favourites in the playground. Sir Trevor who made 647 appearances in claret
and blue and is now the Football Association's Director of Football
Development, said: "It was at Ripple School that I was first played
competitive football. I am very pleased to hear that my old school team are
successfully carrying on the tradition. I am honoured to have been part of
the ceremony to celebrate Bobby, a true sporting hero."

During his visit, Sir Trevor also met pupils from the school that recently
took part in a Premier League Schools tournament at Anfield. Barking and
Dagenham Council leader Cllr Liam Smith said Moore remained a true hero to
local people of all ages. Last year, Cllr Smith launched a campaign to
confer a posthumous knighthood for Moore. "The year 2013 marks two decades
since the death of Bobby Moore - still England's greatest and most iconic
football captain," said Cllr Smith. "Born in Barking in 1941, he remains one
of the game's true giants, regarded by people far and wide as one of the
greatest footballers of all-time.
" I am delighted that Sir Trevor Brooking, also a former pupil of the school
as well as a distinguished Freeman of the Borough, has found time to take
part in this tribute to Bobby Moore. "While Bobby was awarded an OBE, he was
never awarded a Knighthood. This is something that many people nationwide -
and indeed across the world - do not often know. Indeed, it is perplexing
that such an award was not conferred during a lifetime of such success and
achievement."

Razvan Rat, a Good Deal to Open the Summer Transfer Business!
By S J Chandos
West Ham Till I Die

So, it appears that the club have been quick out of the blocks to secure
their first summer signing. Razvan Rat is a very experienced left-back, who
is an accomplished Champions League and international performer. As such, he
significantly strengthens our defensive options and is definitely an upgrade
on the existing options at left-back. Presumably, the reliable George
McCartney will be retained for a further season as cover, whilst the
promising Danny Potts establishes himself in the first team squad? With
Demel signing a recent contract extension and the useful Joey O'Brien
available at right-back, that is likely to be the full-back positions sorted
for next season. Although that supposes that there is no substance to the
stories linking us to a move for Newcastle Utd's pacy right-back, Danny
Simpson. It also begs the question whether Jordan Spence will figure in Sam
Allardyce's plans next season?

So, what will be our next incoming deal? The speculation is rife, as always
at this time of year. In poll position are the reports that West Ham have
moved quickly to agree a £15m fee with Liverpool for Andy Carroll. The
reports are obviously correct in stating that this potential deal is key to
the direction that the club's summer transfer dealings take. If Carroll
signs then we will have secured a player around which the rest of the
transfer dealings will be moulded. If it does not happen then we will have
to first move very quickly to find and sign an alternative. And that is
easier said than done! Personally, I think it possible that Carroll could
agree a 2 or 3 year deal at the club. He is ideal for Allardyce's system,
seems to fit in very well at the club and is virtually guaranteed first team
football. At 24 years of age, time is on his side, and he has the latitude
to enhance his reputation at West Ham and then reconsider his options in 2
or 3 years time, when at 26/27 years of age he will still be approaching his
peak as a player. The complicating factor, of course, is the lack of
European football next season. But if the club can convince Carroll, that
there will be a concerted investment and push to achieve that next season,
all may not be lost.

The other intriguing rumour is that West Ham are actively seeking to secure
Romelu Lukaku on a season long loan. On the face of it, the deal looks
unlikely, but much will depend upon how Chelsea's incoming manager views
Lukaku's readiness for first team duty? One would think that Lukaku had more
than proven himself at WBA last season. But Chelsea do have a strong squad
and further expensive signings (including Ronaldo, according to some
sources) are bound to follow. As such, Chelsea may choose to put Lukaku out
on loan for another season. If so, West Ham will be looking to get the
bounce on WBA and Swansea. The variable factor is whether a overseas club
might just put in a high enough bid to tempt Chelsea to sell outright.
Rumour has it that Brossia Dortmund could put in a bid and the player may be
open to the move. Regardless, there is no doubt that Lukaku, with his pace,
power and goal scoring ability, would be a major addition to the squad,
whether in conjunction with Carroll or as an alternative. Similarly, Wilfred
Bony would also be an excellent signing, but he is likely to be targeted by
Newcastle Utd, now that they have reportedly given up on the chase for Andy
Carroll.

Reports have also emerged this morning that West Ham may be interested in
signing 6ft 6in Rapid Vienna striker, atdhe Nuhiu. The promising 23 year old
has been on loan from Rapid Vienna to Turkish side Eskisehirspor, but will
be a free agent this summer. With Carlton Cole's departure, Nuhiu could be
ideal cover for Carroll and, particularly at the beginning of next season,
when the England striker is likely to be side lined with his current heel
injury. There has recently been some speculation that we may sign Peter
Crouch from Stoke City. At 32 years old, it could be argued that Crouch's
best days are now behind him. He might be an effective 'stop gap'
acquisition, but there is always a temptation to view that type of signing in
a slightly negative light. I guess we will just have wait and see on that
one? Personally, if we are going to sign a striker of that vintage, I would
prefer a bid to QPR to sign Bobby Zamora.

In fact, it will be interesting to see if we sign any of the better players
from the relegated sides, QPR, Reading or Wigan? There have been various
stories about West Ham being interested the likes of Loic Remy (probably a
non-starter), Shaun Maloney, Arouna Kone and even Noel Hunt. Of these (and
Remy aside), Maloney would probably be the best addition, because he is
arguably exactly the type of creative midfield play maker that we need to
add to the current squad. The Scottish international midfielder was
outstanding at Wigan last season and could very well do a job for us.

Finally, we must add the necessary extra quality to the squad to ensure that
there is no question of 'second season syndrome' afflicting us. Both David
Sullivan and Sam Allardyce have made it clear we need to bring in better
players in order to progress as a club. So, we must wait to see how that is
acted upon in terms of our transfer policy this summer. It should be
interesting and, as stated, we have got off to a good start with Rat's
signing. I also have high hopes that some of the youngsters, such as
Chambers, Moncur and Lee, can also 'push on' and add to the first team mix.
And that is the ideal situation that most fans would like to see, West Ham
progressing not only by making the necessary quality signings, but also via
more of our talented youngsters making the break through in to the first
team squad.

Hammers weigh up value of short-term deal of Nuhiu after top target
Carroll's injury woe
By SIMON JONES
PUBLISHED: 22:30, 26 May 2013 | UPDATED: 22:30, 26 May 2013
Daily Mail

West Ham are considering a short term deal for free agent Atdhe Nuhiu. The
6ft 6ins striker is seen as someone who can provide cover for Andy Carroll
who, should he agree to join from Liverpool, will likely miss the start of
the season with a heel injury. Nuhiu, 23, has been on loan from Rapid
Vienna at Turkish side Eskisehirspor. British clubs first noticed him in
2010 when he scored in Rapid Vienna's 3-2 Europa League defeat of Aston
Villa. Manager Sam Allardyce is also among the frontrunners to take Romelu
Lukaku on loan but Chelsea may yet opt to keep the young Belgian rather than
loan him out again.

West Ham, The Speculation And The 'ITKs'
Date: 26th May 2013 at 7:38 pm
Written by: Chelmo Hammer
Forever West Ham

Now, us fans, at West Ham United are like any other supporter in the land
when it comes to speculation about who is joining our club. We love to hear
who could be joining and who could be leaving. I am no different, but in the
last couple of seasons, with Twitter being more popular than ever, we have
these people called 'ITK' – for those who don't know, it stands for 'In The
Know'.

ITK's seem to pop up all over the place these days, telling us news and
behind the scenes transfer dealings, and telling us at what stage
negotiations are with each player.

However, what I have had to do, and what I have done over the last year, is
weed out who is actually in the know, and who is actually talking a load of
rubbish. I have 2 or 3 who I follow who have given reliable information,
and predict signings a few weeks in advance. These people also don't have
the ITK initials after their names. They are realistic in their tweets, and
they do not copy from Twitter accounts.

Even with the 2/3 that I think are reliable, unfortunately, people cannot
believe anything until it is reported on the official West Ham United
website, or it is tweeted by David Gold or by Jack Sullivan. Even Jack
Sullivan is not great, bearing in mind he said we would have two signings to
announce this week, and we've only had one.

I hate to be the spoil sport, but I suggest you ignore all of the
speculation, unless it is reported as suggested above, or 3 to 4 news
sources are reporting it. Also remember that due to the fact the season has
finished, Journalists are looking to fill their papers. Only a small amount
of it is actually true.

Enjoy the speculation, enjoy the drama, and enjoy your summers……

Hammers fans set attendance record
WHUFC.com
West Ham United recorded the highest average home league attendance in the
Club's history in 2012/13
24.05.2013

West Ham United's loyal fans achieved an amazing feat in 2012/13 - the
highest average home league attendance in the Club's 118-year history.
Outstanding home form, investment in star players such as Andy Carroll,
Mohamed Diame and Matt Jarvis and the Board's commitment to affordable
football meant a total of 659,677 supporters attend the Hammers' 19 Barclays
Premier League matches at an average of 34,720 per match. Fans have also
clearly responded positively to other improvements off the pitch, including
better benefits for supporters and changes to the matchday experience
alongside a desire to secure a priority place at the Olympic Stadium.

The Hammers sold out their final 17 Barclays Premier League matches of
2012/13 and, with Season Tickets selling fast, that streak already looks set
to continue when the 2013/14 campaign gets underway in August. The average
eclipses the previous record-high average attendance of 34,719 set in the
2006/07 season, when a total of 659,663 fans attended the Club's 19 home
league fixtures. With West Ham set to move into the 54,000-capacity Olympic
Stadium in Stratford in 2016, demand for tickets to watch the Hammers in
action is only set to grow in future campaigns. Joint-Chairmen David
Sullivan and David Gold welcomed the record-breaking news.

"I would like to thank our fans for their fantastic support this season,"
said Mr Sullivan. "I know from speaking to Sam Allardyce and the players
that they have all felt the benefit of playing in front of such a positive
atmosphere at the Boleyn Ground this year and we must continue that into
next season. It is great to see that so many of our most loyal fans already
share our excitement for the new season as thousands of Season Ticket
holders have already renewed."
"A successful season stems from the relationship between the Chairmen, the
Vice-Chairman and the manager and the manager and his players," said Mr
Gold. "They are the principals of any football club, but what cements it all
together is the fans' passion. You can have all of those elements in a
fragmented way, but without the fans it simply doesn't work, so their
support at home and away has made a huge difference."

Under Big Sam, the Club's Loyal Season Ticket Holders and Academy members
and supporters from all over the world were treated to a memorable 2012/13
season on home turf. Newly-promoted West Ham lost just four of their 19
league matches at the Boleyn Ground, beating UEFA Champions League winners
Chelsea and Capital One Cup winners Swansea City while holding Barclays
Premier League champions Manchester City and champions-elect Manchester
United to draws. The Boleyn Ground faithful enjoyed seeing their team score
34 goals - the highest total of any side outside the top four - and saw 56
goals fly into the net in total - a tally bettered at only five other
Barclays Premier League stadia.

West Ham's eight highest average home league attendances have been recorded
during the Premier League era. The ninth-highest came in the Championship
season of 2003/04. The tenth-highest came in the old Division One in
1968/69, when the Hammers lost just three of their 21 home league matches on
their way to finishing eighth.

Rank Season Average home league attendance
1. 2012/13 (Premier League) 34,720
2. 2006/07 (Premier League) 34,719
3. 2007/08 (Premier League) 34,601
4. 2002/03 (Premier League) 34,432
5. 2008/09 (Premier League) 34,226

7. 2009/10 (Premier League) 33,683
8. 2001/02 (Premier League) 31,570
9. 2003/04 (Championship) 31,167

International call-ups
WHUFC.com
A number of West Ham United players have received call-ups from their
respective nations this summer
24.05.2013

A number of West Ham United players have been called-up for international
duty by their respective countries this summer. While loanee Andy Carroll
has been forced to pull out of the England squad for friendly matches at
home to Republic of Ireland and in Brazil, a host of others will be hoping
to pull on their national colours. Mohamed Diame has been included in the
Senegal squad for 2014 FIFA World Cup African qualifying Group J qualifiers
with Angola in Luanda on Saturday 8 June and Liberia in Monrovia on Saturday
15 June. Senegal currently top Group J with five points from three matches
played, with Diame starting the 1-1 draw with Angola and 3-1 win over
Liberia.

New boy Razvan Rat, who will join the Hammers from Ukrainian double winners
Shakhtar Donetsk on 1 July, is in the Romania squad for an international
friendly with Trinidad and Tobago in Bucharest on Tuesday 4 June.

Lower down the age-group scale, U18s top scorer Kieran Sadlier and U21
striker Sean Maguire have both been included in the Republic of Ireland
squad for their 2013 UEFA European U19 Championship Elite Round Group 2
qualifiers with mini-group hosts Serbia, Slovakia and Switzerland. The Irish
youngsters will take on Switzerland and Slovakia at FC Obilik in Belgrade on
6 and 8 June respectively before facing Serbia at Karadjordje in Novi Sad on
11 June. The group winners will qualify for the finals in Lithuania at the
end of July.

Meanwhile, Dan Potts and Rob Hall have recently returned from an England U20
training camp ahead of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey in June. Defender
Potts and forward Hall have both been named in a preliminary 35-man squad
for the tournament, with coach Peter Taylor set to reduce his selection down
to a final 21 on 7 June. Should Potts and Hall be included, they would face
Group E opponents Iraq and Chile in Antalya on 23 and 26 respectively and
Egypt in Bursa on 29 June.

Modibo Maiga will hope to be included in Mali's squad for their two home
2014 FIFA World Cup African qualifying Group H qualifiers with Rwanda and
Benin in Bamako on Sunday 9 and Sunday 16 June respectively. Mali have won
two of their opening three fixtures to sit second in the group, behind
leaders Algeria on goal difference.

Wales pair James Collins and Jack Collison and New Zealand captain Winston
Reid have a summer free of international commitments.

Splash! Hammers go rowing
WHUFC.com
The West Ham United squad had a day of rowing at Eton Dorney recently
24.05.2013

West Ham United's players and staff enjoyed a day of rowing with Team GB
athlete and Hammers fan Mark Hunter MBE at Eton Dorney recently. Beijing
Gold Medallist Hunter, who also picked up a Silver Medal at the London 2012
Games, put the Hammers through their paces as they tried their hand at
single sculling, before a series of team gig racing. For some it was a more
successful day than others, with assistant manager Neil McDonald ending up
as one of those who spent time out of the boat and in the lake! Despite that
unintended excursion, McDonald felt the day proved beneficial for his squad.
"It wasn't very good to be the first one in," he smiled. "It took us of our
comfort zone to a certain extent. Trying to get the balance and trying to
get the coordination of your arms, legs and core and unfortunately I
couldn't do that. Plop, in I went! "We had been trying to arrange this with
Olympic champion and big West Ham supporter Mark Hunter, and leading up to
the Olympics we said we'd come across and watch him train, to see how he
does things and see whether we could pick something up. "But with both
schedules being very busy, it was hard to plan. But we had a chance leading
up to the last game to bring the boys down and see what it's all about..
We've had a go individually as well as a team and I think the day worked out
fantastically well. "The players are a tight group and that reflects in our
performances and in our position. "Mark, his coaches and his father gladly
took us on board and showed us just a little bit how it's done. A couple of
people fell in, including myself and we had a big race where it's all about
pulling together and making sure everyone's working together, which is what
football's all about."

Ladies appoint Saunderson
WHUFC.com
Mark Saunderson has been appointed as the new West Ham United Ladies manager
24.05.2013

West Ham United Ladies have appointed Mark Saunderson as their new manager.
Saunderson was put in charge following the club's 2013 Annual General
Meeting, with former boss Julia Setford moving to a new role as Director of
Football. Former Fulham Ladies and Crystal Palace Ladies manager Saunderson
has a wealth of experience of the women's game, winning the FA Women's
Premier League Southern Division title with the Cottagers in 2008. He has
also worked extensively with players with hearing impediments, coaching
Fulham Deaf FC and the Great Britain Deaf team. Setford, who stepped down as
manager herself in the spring following a successful two-and-a-half years in
charge, said the 2008 Manager of the Year would bring fresh thinking and
attract new players to the club. "Basically, we have had a little change,"
she explained. "Mark is going to be first-team manager and I will be his
number two and also fill the role of Director of Football. "Mark was with
Fulham Ladies previously, where he has won the Manager of the Year award and
led them to the Southern Division title. He has got a lot of experience and
we have brought him in for that reason. We think he can do a really good job
for us next season. "The changes will enable me to take a step back, but
Mark has far more experience of management than I do and he can really push
us on. He has won the division we are in before so we know he has got good
pedigree and a respected name in women's football. "We need to boost our
squad with more quality and we feel Mark is the manager to bring better
players to the club."

West Ham missed out on a place in the Women's Super League 2, which will
start in 2014, but Setford says everyone at the club is determined to
overcome the disappointment by winning the Southern Division title next
season. "We are all looking forward to the new season already. We didn't get
into the Super League 2, but with our new manager coming in we want to do
well in our own division. "It's going to be even tougher next year with
National Division clubs like Charlton Athletic, Cardiff City and Portsmouth
possibly joining us following the restructuring of the league. It will be
interesting to see how we can build our squad for next year."

Among the other changes made at the Ladies' AGM were the appointment of Ray
Wood as Chairman, replacing Setford, and Bill Robinson as secretary,
replacing the long-serving Colin Roache. The club is looking to appoint a
new reserve-team manager. Applicants must hold the FA Level 3 Coaching
Badge. For further details, email whuladies@hotmail.com Finally, the Ladies
will host a second trial for 16-18-year-olds who would like to spend the
next two years as part of the club's new Football Academy. The Football
Academy is a two-year, full-time education and football development
programme. Participants will earn a Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Sport and
coaching qualifications, while also having the opportunity to train and play
in the Conference Youth Alliance League. The trial will take place between
3pm-5pm on Wednesday 29 May at the West Ham United Community Sports Trust,
60A Albatross Close, Beckton, London, E6 5NX.

Jussi takes Scandinavian acclaim
WHUFC.com
Jussi Jaaskelainen was voted Player of the Year by the Scandinavian Hammers
Supporters' Club
24.05.2013

Jussi Jaaskelainen took the acclaim of the Scandinavian Hammers by being
named as their Player of the Year. The 600-strong Supporters' Club is the
largest of all those groups affiliated to West Ham United, with more than 70
Danes, Finns, Norwegians and Swedes flying in for Sunday's 4-2 Barclays
Premier League win over Reading. On the day before the match, the
Scandinavian Hammers were invited to watch the first-team squad in training
at the Boleyn Ground before spending the evening having dinner with Academy
Director Tony Carr MBE. After training, the group presented their Player of
the Year award to Jaaskelainen - the man who finished as runner-up in the
main Hammer of the Year poll. Scandinavian Hammers leader Gjermund Holt
explained that the former Finland international goalkeeper had won the award
ahead of Hammer of the Year Winston Reid.

"The members have sent in their votes and it was just the other way around
from the Hammer of the Year vote - Jussi just edged it ahead of Winston Reid
in our poll," he said. "Jussi is a well-deserved winner. "He has been
consistently good and he might have got one or two votes because he is
Scandinavian as well! "I was a little bit sad at the end of last season
because Robert Green was one of my favourites. I was at the Play-Off final
and you could see he was waving 'Goodbye' to the fans and I was sad, but
Jussi has really done the business."

Holt said the group were delighted to be back at their home from home at the
Boleyn Ground. "We brought more than 70 members over for the game and we
really love to be at West Ham, so it's been good," said Holt, who is a
regular visitor to east London from his home in Norway. "We are close to 800
members now, most of them from Norway but some from Sweden and Denmark as
well, and this is our third group trip of the season. Some members travel to
every game, but the final game is always a good one to pick out early
because we know the game won't be moved and we can plan and buy plane
tickets. We always come to the last game of the season. "English football is
very popular in Scandinavia and we are probably the eighth or ninth biggest
supporters' club in the region. The Manchester Uniteds and Liverpools are
even bigger with up to 30,000 members. "We will celebrate 25 years in the
autumn. We were formed in 1988 and have had more than 600 members for the
last ten years, so it's been good."

While Jaaskelainen scooped the Player of the Year award this season, Holt
said the Scandinavian Hammers were not fussy when it came to cheering on
their heroes in claret and blue. "We are West Ham supporters and we like to
be here and pretend to be British and be part of the Club," he explained.
"We can see most of the games on television and on the computer as well when
we're at home, but Sunday was my eighth game of the season and quite a few
of the members travel over often because the plane tickets cost next to
nothing. "When I started following West Ham, you had to save for a year to
go for one trip, but now it's a lot easier."

Holt and his fellow Scandinavian Hammers are already planning further trips
to the Boleyn Ground next season, and the leader has endorsed the Club's
decision to agree a new contract with manager Sam Allardyce and is excited
about moving to the Olympic Stadium in 2016. "When you look at the results,
we finished in the top-half and that's as good as we can do at the moment.
We can get better too, so we're pleased with that of course. "It depends
what happens during the transfer window and I know the Club will probably
say tenth is good, but I hope we can push on and be in the chase for a
European place. Maybe next season is too early, but in the future sometime.
"We have a forum on our website and there have been more than 10,000
postings about moving since the rumours started. At the beginning, people
were worried about the running track, but since the last drawings were
published everyone is happy. "Of course it will sad, but it will be so good
to go up there to Stratford. We will be there, for sure."

Cole thanks Hammers fans
WHUFC.com
Departing West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has praised the Club's fans
for their loyal support
24.05.2013

Carlton Cole has thanked West Ham United supporters for their loyal support
as his seven-year stay at the Club comes to a close. The popular striker
will depart the Hammers when his contract expires at the end of June, ending
an association that has spanned 237 appearances and 59 goals. The
Croydon-born player joined West Ham from Chelsea in 2006 and made an
immediate impact by scoring on his debut. During his time at the Boleyn
Ground, he also earned seven senior England caps and scored one of the goals
that helped the Hammers to promotion in the 2012 npower Championship
Play-Off final at Wembley.
Speaking exclusively to whufc.com, Cole said he had thoroughly enjoyed his
time in east London. "I have said that I didn't know what to expect when I
arrived here, but I am glad I came here," said the No9. "I have met so many
good and decent people and I also want to thank the West Ham fans for their
support. I was always proud to play for West Ham United. "I hope that they
could see I always tried to give my all on the pitch for the team and
whether we were home or away, they gave their backing. I am sad to be
leaving but there is a new challenge ahead for me now."

Aside from helping Hammers gain promotion a year ago, Cole also finished as
the Club's leading goalscorer in four consecutive seasons between 2008/09
and 2011/12. The striker was never less than 100 per cent committed every
time he pulled on a claret and blue shirt. "It was full of ups and downs,
but I did try my best and will always remember my time here," added the
29-year-old. "I wish the club and the fans well for the new season and look
forward to what lies ahead for me."

Keep or Sell - The Strikers
By Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

Modibo Maiga 56% KEEP

The trouble with Maiga is that he looks as if he isn't trying. I'm sure that
is wrong, but maybe that is why Sam has given him so few outings. He has
scored 4 goals all of which were taken very well, but he's a bit like
Maynard and Baldock - none of them were ever given extended runs to enable
them to show what they could do. I'm ambivalent as to whether Maiga stays or
goes, but if he's not going to get a chance, there's little point in keeping
him.

Carlton Cole 76% SELL

Well he's gone, so the 76% got their way. I'm astonished at that figure. It
turns out Carlton was offered a new contract but he refused it. He'd be mad
to go to LA Galaxy. Watford or Crystal Palace would suit him more, I'd have
thought.

Andy Carroll 98% KEEP

It's good that so many people appreciate Andy. Let's hope he appreciates
what we think of him. Fingers crossed. Well as it stands at the moment, we
only have a single first team striker on the books, so far as I can see.

Carroll Chamakh, Paulista were all loan signings and Carlton Cole has
already gone. So, Modibo Maiga, it's all down to you! Except of course he's
already being linked with a cut-price move back to France. The Sun reported
this morning that Marseilles want to sign him for £2.5 million, which is
£1.5 million less than we paid for him. Rob Hall's contract is also up in
June. I have heard Sam thinks a lot of him, but if so it's odd that he's
allowed his contract to run down. Bolton want him and would be able to sign
him for peanuts.

So if Andy Carroll doesn't sign we really are up a creek striker-wise. No
wonder Sam wants to tie the deal up quickly. But whatever happens it looks
like we need at least 3 new strikers this summer.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Keep or Sell? - The Midfield
By Iain Dale West Ham Till I Die

Kevin Nolan 92% KEEP

A solid season from the captain, again with a superb goalscoring record.
Sometimes it is easy for him to drift out of a game, but his attacking
threat is always there. The Keep score is more emphatic than I thought it
would be. If Andy Carroll stays, a large part of it will be because of his
relationship with Nolan.

Mark Noble 98% KEEP

A great season for Mark Noble. I suspect if he hadn't had that protracted
period out towards the end of the season he would have come close to winning
Hammer of the Year. Despite a lack of pace he has been the fulcrum of the
side, with his tackling and ability to spray the ball around the pitch being
key to his game. His ability to score penalties has remained - he's up there
with Ray Stewart and Julian Dicks for scoring them.

Mo Diame 98% KEEP

Maybe he faded in the second half of the season but to me he was one of the
best three players of the season. His driving runs are a sight to behold and
although his shots can be a tad wayward he did score some crucial goals. He
should be given a new long term contract minus the £3.5 million sell on
clause that turned his head in the January transfer window.

Gary O'Neill 56% SELL

As people know, I am not a fan of Gary O'Neil. Yes, he did deliver the goods
towards the end of the season and scored a couple of excellent goals, but he
is too average to be part of our long term plans. By all accounts he is a
lovely guy, but it seems to me that if any players are to be let go, he
needs to be one of them.

Matt Jarvis 98% KEEP

Despite a slow start, Matt Jarvis is now one of the first names on the
teamsheet. Stats show he delivered more crosses into the box than any other
Premier League player. As his confidence went up, so did his ability to beat
defenders and take the ball to the byline. He needs to score more goals and
he no doubt realises that, but I reckon he may well play himself into the
World Cup squad next season. Assuming we qualify!

Joe Cole 96% KEEP

Since he re-joined us in January he has surpassed all expectations. OK, he's
been out a couple of times through injury, but when he has played he has
always looked dangerous and it is good to see him rediscovering his scoring
boots.

Ricardo Vaz Te 51% SELL

Vaz Te flattered to deceive this season. He only had one really good game -
against Manchester United. His lack of goals was a worry and his head
dropped far too often. You wonder whether the Championship was his right
level. I'd be tempted to stick with him for another season and give him
another chance, but if one of the promoted sides comes in with an offer,
you'd have to consider it.

Matt Taylor 87% SELL

I'm slightly surprised that 87% of you want rid of Matt Taylor. He's done
nothing wrong at all and every team needs a player like Taylor. He can play
across midfield and left back. His corners remain incredibly dangerous
(unlike Noble or O'Neil's) and he is great at set pieces - well, perhaps not
as often as he used to be, but you get my drift.

Jack Collison 88% KEEP

A mixed season for Jack, again blighted by injury. The things is with Jack,
you know he will never let you down. He's also capable of scoring crucial
goals. He's often played out on the right, but I have always seen him as a
forward looking central midfielder. As an able first deputy, you couldn't
want better.

SIGNING COLE IS A BURNING AMBITION
The Star
26th May 2013 By Paul Hetherington

CRYSTAL PALACE aim to win promotion to the Premier League tomorrow – then
clinch the signing of West Ham striker Carlton Cole. Palace boss Ian
Holloway has made Cole – out of contract and leaving the Hammers on a free
transfer – a priority target. Cole, 29, is interested in moving to America's
MLS but Palace hope to persuade him to remain in London. They will try to
sign the former Chelsea and England striker (below) even if they lose the
play-off final with Watford. But if they triumph at Wembley to reach the top
flight, they will be able to offer a financial package amounting to
£50,000-a-week, particularly as there is no transfer fee to pay. That would
be made up of a signing-on fee plus wages. Palace are in the market for a
centre-forward as knee injury victim Glen Murray, their leading scorer, has
already been ruled out for most of next season. Team-mate Damien Delaney
certainly isn't a fitness doubt – he is taking inspiration from GB's Olympic
triathlon medal- winners Alistair and Jonny Brownlee. The defender, 31, has
been busy competing in triathlons and is considering taking them up
full-time when his football career ends. As Delaney prepared for the Eagles'
big day, he said: "I've done a few triathlons. I love them. "It's a really
different level of fitness."

West Ham lined up to take yet another Liverpool misfit
Footylatest.com

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen on clearing out the excess weight
from his Liverpool squad this summer as he looks to bring in the kind of
players who he believes can play his brand of pass and move football. Having
already sold Joe Cole to West Ham United last season, and reportedly now
being on the verge of doing the same to Andy Carroll, the Reds have found a
third player they wish to discard, who the Hammers will gladly sign on in
midfield battler Jonjo Shelvey.

The former Charlton Athletic star made his England debut this season in an
international friendly against San Marino and was tipped for big things when
he made his move to Merseyside at the start of the 2010-11 season.

The arrival of Brendan Rodgers at the club has seen Shelvey get a lot more
game time, particularly in the Europa League where Rodgers used the
youngster extensively. However, it appears that Shelvey has not done enough
in his 33 appearances for Liverpool this season to convince Rodgers of his
long term viability and the Reds manager is keen to move him on to West Ham
should he get a fair valuation for the 21 year old.

Demel's delight at home record
WHUFC.com
West Ham United defender Guy Demel was happy to register another home
success last weekend
23.05.2013

Guy Demel believes the Hammers' pride in their home record throughout the
2012/13 season saw West Ham United grab all three points against Reading on
Sunday. The relegated Royals looked like they may derail West Ham's hopes of
sealing a top-ten finish when they came back from 2-0 down with a couple of
goals inside the first ten minutes of the second period. But only six teams
have taken more points at home than the Hammers this season, and the Boleyn
Ground crowd were reminded why with a superb final flourish that saw Kevin
Nolan complete his hat-trick with two goals in the closing stages. It means
the Hammers ended the campaign with 33 points from 19 home league matches
and Demel says that is a haul they can look back on with some satisfaction.
He told West Ham TV: "It was a good game on Sunday with a lot of goals
scored, but the most important thing for us was to win the game and get the
three points. "We did the job, Reading came back in the second half, but Kev
[Nolan] and Andy [Carroll] were superb. As a team we showed a good reaction
after the goals from Reading, so it's a really good way to go on our
holidays. "We knew that Reading wouldn't give us the game, that they would
try to come back after half-time and give us a hard time. They did, but we
responded and we've got a nice record from the home games this season.
"We're proud of that and we won't let any team beat us easily at home. We
showed the reaction, which was good."

Demel himself has come back from adversity, battling his way through an
injury-plagued first season in east London to make 32 appearances in
2012/13.
He credits the ease of his reintegration into the fold to the superb team
spirit in the Hammers camp. "Every player had a part to play this season,"
he added. "You saw on Sunday that Modibo Maiga came on after a while on the
bench and he delivered a good ball for Kev [to score his hat-trick goal with
a header].
"This is the atmosphere in the team, everyone gives their best and we know
we have to continue to work, because next season will be harder. "I think it
was a good season for me. My first season was difficult because I went
through many injuries, but you can feel that good atmosphere in the team so
it was pretty easy to come back in. "I'm quite happy for my season. I played
many games, but without my teammates that would not be possible."

Pitching in
WHUFC.com
The groundstaff will spend the summer ensuring the pitches are in top
condition come pre-season
23.05.2013

While West Ham United's players take a well-earned summer break, the Club's
groundstaff will be busy ensuring that the pitches are in perfect condition
come the start of pre-season training. Head groundsman Dougie Robertson
(pictured) and his team have already started work on relaying the pitches at
Chadwell Heath, Little Heath and Rush Green, while the Boleyn Ground playing
surface will be replaced next month. Robertson said the hard work would
continue until every pitch is ready for use ahead of the 2013/14 Barclays
Premier League campaign. "We started relaying the pitches last week," he
confirmed. "The manager [Sam Allardyce] moved first-team training to the
stadium and that gave us an extra week of preparation time, repairing and
preparing the pitches for next season. "We began with the first pitch at
Chadwell Heath in mid-April, removing the existing vegetation and then
re-sanding and re-seeding the pitch. The grass on there is now up to an
inch-and-a-half in height so we will start slowly reducing that and keep
watering it every day. "We started on the other pitches at Chadwell Heath
last Monday [13 May] and finished on Wednesday by seeding them. In ten days
time, we'll see some grass coming through and can get it ready for
pre-season. These remaining pitches will be given back to the first team at
the end of July. "The squad goes away to Ireland in the first week of July
and then come back and train on the first pitch we stripped off, so the
times marry in. They will all have the required rest period."

While Sunday league football is often played on pitches that can resemble
ploughed fields, Robertson and his team utilise ultra-modern methods to
ensure their playing surfaces remain in perfect condition throughout the
season. "We use a product called Fibresand which has horse hair in it, which
strengthens the root zone of the grass and helps to stabilise the pitches.
This gives us a whole season's worth of play. We put down 18 to 20 bags of
grass seed per pitch and these will continue to grow over the summer."

Aside from relaying pitches, Robertson and his staff will be doing all
manner of maintenance jobs at the Club's training complexes, including the
new Academy facilities at Rush Green and the Boleyn Ground. "The groundstaff
will be working seven days a week now until the players come back. We need
to redecorate the buildings and strip the pitches off on every site and we
start at the stadium on 17 June after the very successful corporate events
have finished. It's a very busy time. "We took on Rush Green last year,
which is a 29-acre site used to train youngsters aged 14 and 15 and for
Under-21 matches. It's been a lot of xtra work successfully added on. The
first year of the Elite Player Performance Plan has had good results. "The
Boleyn Ground pitch has been fantastic this year. We got off to a bit of a
slippery start with the wet summer last year, but we more than fixed that
and the pitch has been fantastic all year. We've had great feedback from
West Ham and from the opposing teams, so I'm very pleased.

Joint-Chairman remembers Anne Frank
WHUFC.com
David Gold attended the opening of an exhibition telling the story of
Holocaust victim Anne Frank
23.05.2013

West Ham United Joint-Chairman David Gold was among the dignitaries to
attend the opening of a new exhibition telling the story of Holocaust victim
Anne Frank. Frank, who died of typhus at the Bergen-Belsen concentration
camp at the age of 15 in 1945 and remains of the most discussed Jewish
victims of the Holocaust, documented her experiences hiding during the
German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II in her now
world-famous diary. The Anne Frank +You exhibition, which will staged by the
Anne Frank Trust UK at Newham Town Hall until 6 June, gives Frank's story
and message a contemporary profile for today, focusing on the issues of
identity and moral choice we face in 21st century Britain. Starting from
Frank's writings and experiences, the free exhibition is a journey of
self-exploration for the visitor. Themes that the tragic schoolgirl wrote
about in her diary, such as racial hatred, war and conflict and the value of
democracy and freedom, are presented in a contemporary fashion, along with
filmed interviews with British teenagers discussing their own views,
concerns and hopes for the future. The exhibition features a near life-size
replica of her bedroom in the secret annexe to the Amsterdam house where the
Frank family hid from the Nazis for two years. The display also includes
newly-discovered photographs of Anne and her sister Margot with film footage
and historical artefacts.

Mr Gold attended the opening of the exhibition alongside anti-racism
campaigner Doreen Lawrence, Anne Frank Trust UK co-founder Gillian Walnes
MBE, Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, Young Mayor of Newham Rebekah Dike and
local schoolchildren. He gave a powerful, unscripted speech at the opening
on how his own family had been victims of discrimination. Mr Gold revealed
how his great-grandparents and grandfather fled the Pogroms in Russia, in
which thousands of Jewish people were murdered, and came to the East End of
London only to face more prejudice which had tragic consequences. He said:
"My great grandfather thought he'd left all that behind and was coming to a
safe country but the East End was just as bad. It got too much for him and
he hanged himself in an East End synagogue."

The displays use film footage and historical artefacts about the Holocaust
to highlight the danger of ignoring intolerance which the Joint-Chairman
warned is still an issue for everyone. "There's no doubt we've made progress
over the last 70 years since the Second World War. But, of course, for most
of us we can't go back that far," Mr Gold said. "Yes, we've met the demands
of progress and there are some people who think we've solved this. The truth
is we haven't. Racism and intolerance still lurks, still there, under a
stone. We must remain vigilant. It won't take a lot for it to resurface.
There is an old saying 'evil only triumphs when good men do nothing'. It's
true."

The exhibition also tackles head-on the issue of racism in football which
the chairman believes is still a problem that everyone must challenge. He
said: "I support the Kick it Out campaign. Football has done a lot in this
area. We're winning but we're not there yet. Should we keep trying to do
better? Absolutely: it's important." The exhibition is hosted by young
ambassadors from local schools who impressed Mr Gold as they showed him
round. Mr Gold said: "I'm heartened by the young people that I've met. They
are the future and are a real inspiration. They can - and I hope will - make
a real difference." Anne Frank +You is suitable for adults and children
from age ten and up, while school groups can also visit for a special tour
of the exhibition by pupils. It will be open daily between 9am and 5pm until
6 June.

Sullivan ponders 'devastating' strike force

Co-chairman David Sullivan is back in the papers after he hinted at the
prospect of lining Andy Carroll up with Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku. Sullivan,
who has an uncanny knack of appearing in the press around season ticket
renewal time, told the Mirror that West Ham were seriously considering
making a move for the 20-year-old forward who proved such a success on loan
at West Brom last season. "Lukaku would be a loan again. We'd maybe buy him
a year later if Chelsea decide they don't want him," said Sullivan. "He has
been amazing for West Brom this season and I'd hope that he would prefer to
live in London."

And on the potential arrival of Carroll, on whom West Ham and Liverpool are
understood to have agreed a fee, he added: "If we sign Andy, it would be a
record signing for the club. He and Romelu would be devastating. The best
strike-force outside of the top six or seven." Elsewhere today, Italian
sources claim that West Ham have offered Massimo Ambrosini a two-year
contract should he fail to clinch a new deal with Milan, his club for the
last 17 years. The 35-year-old was in London earlier this week with his
agent for preliminary discussions with Hammers representatives. It is
thought that MLS side LA Galaxy are also monitoring Ambrosini's situation
carefully. Moving to Spain, and it is reported that West Ham have been
keeping tabs on Real Betis' defensive midfielder Benat Etxeberria. The
26-year-old, who emerged from the Athletico Bilbao youth academy has
represented his country on four occasions in the last 12 months.

The first Betis player to represent Spain for several years, Etxeberria -
whose last two appearances are reported to have been watched by West Ham
scouts - is valued at around 8million by his club, who are understood to be
prepared to do business should an offer in that region be forthcoming.
United are also said to be taking a look at Etxeberria's team mate Adrian,
Betis' reserve goalkeeper. The 26-year-old is a home-grown player having
emerged from the Betis youth ranks and was recently voted Man of the Match
in their 1-0 win over Real Madrid.

A plaque in memory of Bobby Moore has been unveiled at the primary school
formerly attended by the ex-West Ham United and England captain. Moore, who
was born at Barking Hospital in 1941 was a pupil at Ripple Primary School in
Barking between 1946 and 1952. And earlier this week a blue English Heritage
plaque to celebrate his achievements was unveiled at the school by Moore's
former team mate, fellow Hammers legend Trevor Brooking. Brooking - another
former Ripple School pupil - told the Barking & Dagenham Post: "I am very
pleased to hear that my old school team are successfully carrying on the
[sporting] tradition and I am honoured to be part of today's ceremony to
celebrate Bobby."

During the visit Brooking - who was described by pupils he met as "a class
act" - also met a number of players who had represented West Ham at a recent
tournament staged at Liverpool's home ground, Anfield. The team - who had
been chosen to represent West Ham at the event after winning a local
competition, and who train on a concrete playground with the school having
no field - finished third in the tournament. West Ham United FC are
understood to have paid for the team's entire trip including accomodation,
travel and replica kits.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers expects a quick decision on Andy Carroll's

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admits he expects Andy Carroll's future to be
decided long before the end of the transfer window. The Reds have agreed a
fee with West Ham for Carroll after the striker enjoyed a successful spell
on loan at Upton Park this season. Any move could be delayed after Carroll
picked up a heel injury which could sideline him for up to six weeks, but
Rodgers does not expect any possible move to drag on after the loan move
only took place at the back end of the summer transfer window. Rodgers
revealed he has spoken to Carroll about his future and the Liverpool boss
expects a resolution soon. "It was just a general conversation in terms of
the experience of getting out and playing," Rodgers told the Guardian. "He
enjoyed that apart from the injury. "At the start of the season the whole
thing was about going and getting games because he wasn't going to be a
starter here. We will talk again with him and the club to see how it all
evolves. It's one of those situations where it will probably be resolved a
lot quicker than that for both parties."

"We will talk again with him and the club to see how it all evolves. It's
one of those situations where it will probably be resolved a lot quicker

Carroll during the summer to try and thrash out the player's future. "It's a
difficult one. I spoke to him and we had a good chat," added Rodgers "In
terms of the money, that's something out of my control. But he's a talent so
we will assess the whole situation. "The objective at the beginning of the
season was for him to go out and play. He's gone away to think of what we
spoke about and we will talk again through the weeks."

West Ham Set to Pounce For Spanish International Midfielder
by Mark Brus May 23rd, 2013
cuaghtoffside.com

Hammers in for Real Betis midfielder. West Ham could emerge as shock
contenders to sign Real Betis midfielder Benat, according to talkSPORT. The
Premier League club will make a contract offer to the 26-year-old Spanish
international, who is available on a free transfer in this summer's transfer
window.
The former Athletic Bilbao man, who has two caps for Spain, looked likely to
favour a return to his former club, but was also said to be attracting
interest from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham. However,
the Hammers are keen to strengthen their squad this summer, planning a
number of high-profile signings, and Benat on a free would certainly be good
business for manager Sam Allardyce if he can pull it off. The Spaniard could
join the likes of Andy Carroll and Romelu Lukaku at Upton Park this summer,
as Allardyce looks to improve on their 10th place finish of this campaign.
Benat would certainly add some quality in the middle of the park, with 4
goals and 8 assists from midfield in La Liga this season. With Arsenal adn
Tottenham target Mohamed Diame possibly leaving the club, Benat could prove
a very useful replacement.

The Big Interview - Razvan Rat
WHUFC.com
West Ham United's new signing Razvan Rat has fulflled a dream by moving to
the Premier League
22.05.2013

Romania captain Razvan Rat cannot wait to tackle the challenge of Barclays
Premier League football head on after agreeing to join West Ham United on a
free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk. The 31-year-old left-back spent ten
years with the Ukrainian champions and enjoyed great success, winning a
total of 12 trophies during his time at the club. But having found the lure
of English football too much to resist, Rat is thrilled to have committed
his future to the Hammers.

First of all Razvan, a very big welcome to West Ham United. How excited are
you to be signing here?

RR - "I am very excited, because it has been my dream to play in England, so
I am very happy to be here. I was at Shakhtar for ten years, so I must thank
them for understanding my decision to come here. I've chosen England, I've
chosen West Ham and I'm very happy for that."

You were at Shakhtar for a very long time, so how big a decision was it to
leave?

RR - "This is what I want to tell you, that it was a big decision for me.
After ten years, it is very hard to move with everything - your family and
everything like that - so it is true that for the moment it might not be so
easy, but I know me and I know that I will adapt very soon. I think it will
not be a problem. I hope that the fans will adopt me as one of their own and
I'm really looking forward to being one of the team."

You've played in the UEFA Champions League with Shakhtar and EURO 2008 for
Romania, but how much of a challenge is it to be coming to the Barclays
Premier League?

RR - "I think that the Premier League is the best championship in the world.
It's an honour for me and a big pleasure to play here. I played a lot of
games in the Champions League [at Shakhtar], but you never know, perhaps we
can get there or to the Europa League with West Ham. Anything can happen. I
think we have a good team and if everything is as we plan, we'll be a tough
team [to beat]."

The season has just finished and West Ham had a good first year back in the
Premier League, finishing tenth, so you must be looking forward to trying to
build on that now over the next couple of seasons?

RR - "Yes. I plan to end my career here, but not so soon - I hope it will be
in something like five or six years. I plan to be here for a long time and I
will give my best for my team and to give good performances here."

How much has the manager Sam Allardyce spoken to you about his hopes for
next season?

RR - "We'll have a lot of time to speak about his philosophy and what we
wants from me. I will be happy to help him and to be in the team as a
regular player. [I want to be a] man who will be loved by the fans."

Finally, for the fans who may not have seen you play before, how would you
describe yourself as a player?

RR - "I won't say anything about myself now. I just want to do my best and
let the fans appreciate what I will do on the field. This is the most
important thing for me, above everything, the love of the fans."

Cole to depart

Carlton Cole will leave West Ham United this summer after the Club decided
not to renew his contract
22.05.2013

West Ham United can confirm that long-serving striker Carlton Cole will
leave this summer after the Club decided not to renew his contract. The
29-year-old will depart the Boleyn Ground after seven seasons, during which
he made 237 appearances, scored 59 goals and became a firm favourite among
Hammers supporters. He played an important role in the Club's promotion from
the npower Championship last season, scoring 15 times, including the opening
goal in the Championship Play-Off final victory over Blackpool at Wembley a
year ago. West Ham United would like to thank Carlton for his hard work,
goals and outstanding commitment over the past seven seasons and wish him
every success in his future career. The Hammers can also confirm that they
remain in talks with midfielder Gary O'Neil over a new contract. The No32
made 27 first-team appearances in 2012/13, scoring once. Hammers manager Sam
Allardyce said: "Carlton's contract has come to an end and we have decided
not to renew that contract. "Carlton's need at his age is to be playing
football as often as he can. From our point of view we felt it better that
he found pastures new. "We can only thank him for his outstanding commitment
and service to West Ham United over the last seven years. "For Gary,
negotiations are ongoing and that will be done between the Chairmen and his
agent now."

Young professionals Jake Larkins, Jack Powell, Eoin Wearen and Declan Hunt
and scholars Cheye Alexander, Nigel Seidu and Josh Siafa will all leave the
Club when their contracts expire this summer. West Ham United would like to
thank all of them for their efforts and wish them every success in the
future.

UEFA Festival comes to Stratford

West Ham United will be well represented when the UEFA Champions Festival
comes to Stratford this week
22.05.2013

West Ham United will be well represented when the UEFA Champions Festival
heads towards the Olympic Stadium this week to coincide with Saturday's
Champions League final. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be battling
it out to be crowned Europe's finest at Wembley Stadium on 25 May, but UEFA
is bringing all the excitement firmly into the Hammers heartland with a
special four-day extravaganza in the stunning shadow of the Olympic Stadium.
Visitors will also get the chance of a fantastic view of the Hammers' new
home from 2016.

From Thursday 23 May to Sunday 26 May, UEFA will be taking over the
International Quarter, Stratford with a host of free football-themed
activities and things for the whole family to enjoy. The Football
Association is arranging a grassroots programme, coinciding with its 150th
anniversary and marking its role as host federation. The FA is also inviting
a number of ambassadors along.

Hammers supporter Mark Hunter MBE will be among them, with the gold
medal-winning rower due to be at the Festival on the Sunday afternoon. Other
great names will be in attendance including Final ambassadors Faye White and
Steve McManaman, while the Ultimate Champions match on Saturday promises to
be a thriller with the likes of Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane will take
part.

Hammers fans will also potentially be able to have their photos taken with
the UEFA Champions League trophies - the women's final is on Thursday 23 May
at Stamford Bridge - as well as visit the official UEFA Champions League
museum to experience all the memories of past tournaments. Sir Trevor
Brooking, FA Director of Football Development, said: "It is great that we at
The FA are able to support the UEFA Champions Festival in a part of London
that is very close to my heart. I am particularly proud that we will be
putting on a showcase of our grassroots work as this has been a major focus
of our 150th anniversary celebrations this year. "We invest £100m back into
the game each year and are using FA150 to shine a light on the seven million
players, 400,000 volunteers, 300,000 coaches and 27,000 referees we have
involved in football. "The UEFA Champions Festival is another opportunity to
talk about this and also to share UEFA's own strong commitment to the
grassroots. I am especially pleased that the women's game, futsal and
disability teams will all take centre stage over the four days."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "We are delighted that the UEFA
Champions Festival is returning to London and especially that it will take
place on the International Quarter close to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park,
the scene of our biggest sporting moment. It will provide a fantastic
week-long family event and will revive the spirit of community and
celebration that made last year's Olympic Games so special."

Noble thrilled with winning return
WHUFC.com
West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble was happy to end the season on a high
22.05.2013

Mark Noble was delighted to mark his return to the starting line-up with a
win against Reading on Sunday. The 26-year-old midfielder underwent an
operation on a trapped nerve in the spring, but came back to make three
appearances from the bench before stepping back up to the first XI at the
weekend. The Hammers overcame relegated Reading 4-2 to end the Barclays
Premier League season on a high and secure tenth place in the table. Noble
told West Ham TV: "It was nice to be back playing. My arm felt fantastic and
I really enjoyed [the win] on Sunday. "We started really slowly in the
second half, but some of the football we played in the first half and
towards the end of the second was fantastic. "It was lovely to finish the
season off with a game like that - loads of goals, entertaining for the
crowd and it will mean we go away with loads of confidence."

Noble was involved from the off, clipping a first minute ball over to Andy
Carroll, which was only just out of the big Geordie's reach, then supplying
the pass for Kevin Nolan's second goal near the end. He added: "I think Andy
thought I was going to shoot, I lined up to do that but I saw him pull off
to the far stick, and if he had a size 14 foot instead of a size 12, he
would have scored! "For Nobby's second goal it was a nice bit of play, then
once I've put him through he doesn't miss those opportunities. It was nice
to go 3-2 up after the poor start we made to the second half, and then
finish it comfortably."

Nolan's hat-trick took him to ten goals for the season and Noble would like
to see more Hammers players reach that mark next term. He explained: "We've
not had too many high-scoring players this season, Nobby ended with ten,
Andy seven and me four. "Hopefully we can get a couple of players in double
figures next season, score a few more away from home and not rely on our
home form as much. Our form here has been fantastic this season and it's
been a pleasure to play in front of the Boleyn Ground crowd."

For Noble himself, he is looking forward to a brief period of relaxation
before kicking on again ahead of the 2013/14 campaign. He said: "I'll have
two or three weeks rest. then start working again looking forward to
pre-season, getting fit and then starting the Premier League again."

treatment after being diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2011. Looking
remarkably fresh, Dr Weiler told West Ham TV of his pride and happiness at
completing such a feat, raising tens of thousands of pounds for a charity
close to his heart in the process. "I decided to do the run for Caudwell
Children, which is a great charity," he confirmed. "Dylan and I cooked up
the plan as he has been through a lot of challenges over the last couple of
years and we thought it was about time that I put my feet where my mouth was
and took up a challenge myself, so I decided to do it. "I'd not run a
marathon or a race before, so it was a heck of a long way, but it had to be
a challenge otherwise people would not have been inspired to sponsor me.
It's such a great cause, it really is, so I have to say 30 miles is a piece
of cake when you compare it to what Dylan has been through and the
challenges the kids at Caudwell Children face. "I took in a few sights
during my run. I went past Buckingham Palace and took a few photos on my
phone and then Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Nelson's Column, all
the way along the River Thames and then up towards the Olympic Park."

Dr Weiler said he hopes his run will inspire others to become more active
and lead healthier lifestyles - just as Caudwell Children does for the
youngsters who are helped by the charity. "I do a lot of work promoting
health, writing lots of papers and doing research. Everybody can get a
little taste of leading a healthy lifestyle. I'm not saying people should
run 30 miles, but just doing a bit of walking every day would be great. "The
charity is very close to my heart, supporting children with disabilities to
help get them mobility aids and specialist treatments that they cannot get
anywhere else. They also run a great programme called Destination Dreams for
children with terminal illnesses, looking after kids and their families and
taking them on very special holidays. "There are loads of other great things
that the charity does and hopefully West Ham fans will become more aware of
them as well."

Tombides, who met Dr Weiler at the Champions sculpture before completing the
walk to the Boleyn Ground with him, was full of praise for someone he knows
very well. The striker said: "The Doc made it look so easy. He didn't even
look like he was sweating at the end of it. He was so full of energy! It's
an unbelievable achievement and he told me he had to walk parts of it to
slow down! "I have spent a lot of time with the Doc over the last two years,
obviously not for the greatest of reasons, but nevertheless he is a
fantastic guy and what he did on Sunday just showed what he is all about.
"He went to a lot of effort that he didn't have to go to to raise money for
the charity, so it means a lot to me and my family."

Caudwell Children fundraising manager Nikki Samsa thanked Dr Weiler for his
effort in raising money that will make differences to the lives of many
youngsters. "It's fantastic for us. We are a national charity but with quite
a local feel so we help children throughout the UK. Richard's run will make
a difference to a lot of disabled children who are living in or on the
margins of poverty. It's a huge thing that he has done and it will make a
massive difference.
"It was astounding. Richard gives us a lot of support as a trustee, but for
him to get up as early as he did, run to work and then do a full day at West
Ham was amazing. He looked like he could have run another 30 miles. It was
phenomenal. "The money Richard has raised will truly change children's lives
across the UK. He will be providing therapy tricycles and wheelchairs for
children with autism that will change their lives beyond a doubt."

Carlton Cole to leave West Ham after seven seasons
BBC.co.uk

Striker Carlton Cole will leave West Ham United this summer after the club
decided not to renew his contract. The 29-year-old has spent seven seasons
at Upton Park but struggled for form in 2012-13, scoring only twice. Cole's
future at the club appeared in doubt as the club have agreed a fee to sign
Andy Carroll on a permanent deal. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said:
"Carlton's need at his age is to be playing football as often as he can. We
felt it better he found pastures new."

Cole's West Ham years
Appearances: 237
Goals: 59
England caps: seven
Cole scored the opening goal in West Ham's Championship play-off final
victory over Blackpool in 2012.
2012-13 appearances/goals: 29/2

Cole, who has seven England caps, joined West Ham from Chelsea in 2006. His
last goal for the club was in a home defeat by Everton last December and he
indicated on Tuesday on Twitter that he would be looking for a new club. He
said: "Life is filled with ups and downs - today is a down but I'll be
back! Carlton Cole has left the building. "I came to east London not knowing
what to expect but I'm glad I did. The last 7 years I've met a lot of good
honest decent people. Thank you." His departure was confirmed on the club's
official website on Wednesday. West Ham's joint chairman David Gold
tweeted: "Good luck @CarltonCole1 - one of the nicest men I've ever met in
football." Meanwhile, the club have announced they are still in talks with
midfielder Gary O'Neil, 30, over a new deal. Allardyce said: "For Gary,
negotiations are ongoing and that will be done between the chairmen and his
agent now."

Andy Carroll could be out until August with heel injury
BBC.co.uk

Striker Andy Carroll could be out until the start of the new season with the
heel injury that forced him out of England's two post-season friendlies. The
24-year-old, who spent last season on loan at West Ham from Liverpool, fell
awkwardly in the Hammers' final game of the season. Although no surgery is
required Carroll could be out for at least three months. It is understood
the injury will not jeopardise Carroll's proposed move from Liverpool to
West Ham. The clubs agreed a fee in the region of £15m, but the Hammers' top
scorer has yet to decide whether he wants to join the east London club on a
permanent basis.
Carroll was signed by Kenny Dalglish from Newcastle and moved to Liverpool
on transfer deadline day in January 2011, for what remains a record fee for
a British player of £35m. The centre forward joins Liverpool's Steven
Gerrard and Arsenal's Jack Wilshere on the sidelines for England's matches
against the Republic of Ireland on 29 May and Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on 2
June.

West Ham owner David Sullivan eyes Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku
Last Updated: May 22, 2013 10:19am

Romelu Lukaku is a target for West Ham, with joint-owner David Sullivan
hoping to pair the striker with Andy Carroll. Chelsea's Belgium
international striker enjoyed an outstanding season-long loan at West Brom,
where he netted 17 goals to finish sixth in the Premier League top scorers'
chart. The Blues are expected to send the 20-year-old out on loan again for
the 2013/14 campaign, with Europa League debutants Swansea understood to be
leading the chase.
However, Hammers supremo Sullivan believes he can convince Lukaku to remain
in the capital and play at Upton Park alongside Carroll, who could be about
to secure a permanent £15million switch from Liverpool. Sullivan told the
Daily Mirror: "Lukaku would be a loan again. We'd maybe buy him a year later
if Chelsea decide they don't want him. "If we sign Andy, it would be a
record signing for the club. He and Romelu would be devastating. The best
strike-force outside of the top six or seven. "Lukaku has been amazing for
West Brom this season and I'd hope that he would prefer to live in London."
Having surprised many pundits by finishing in the top half of the table in
their first season back in the top-flight, Sullivan is now hoping the team
can push on under Sam Allardyce. "I am absolutely delighted with this
season," added Sullivan. "To be clear of relegation with three or four games
to go has been a lovely feeling.
"But we have another challenge ahead. Newcastle were fifth last year and yet
hovered above the relegation zone this time. There can never be any room for
complacency."

Newcastle not interested in re-signing Andy Carroll
Last Updated: May 22, 2013 5:03pm

Newcastle United say they have no interest in re-signing Andy Carroll,
according to Sky sources. West Ham had reportedly agreed a £15m fee with
Liverpool for the 24-year-old striker on Tuesday but reports claimed that
Newcastle were set to hijack the deal. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew last
week admitted he would be interested in signing Carroll "should he become
available", but the club have now denied any interest in the England man.
Carroll played the final match of his season-long loan from Anfield in the
Hammers' 4-2 Premier League win over Reading on Sunday. His seven goals,
including a late-season flurry, earned him a call-up to the latest England
squad but the giant striker was forced to pull out with a heel injury. The
Hammers have made little secret of their hopes of securing the services of
the Gateshead-born frontman on a permanent basis and West Ham boss Sam
Allardyce said keeping him at Upton Park was a priority. Carroll moved to
Liverpool from Newcastle in a £35million deal in January 2011, but struggled
to make his mark on Merseyside scoring just six Premier League goals for the
Reds in 44 games. They sold Carroll barely a month after Pardew's arrival on
Tyneside after Liverpool made them an offer they simply could not refuse,
but the striker struggled to make an impact on Merseyside and Kenny
Dalglish's untimely exit heralded a further downturn in his fortunes.

Pardew had no desire to let the player leave - indeed, he had repeatedly
insisted he would be going nowhere until the Reds broke the bank to get
their man - and whenever asked about a possible return, he has always
indicated his willingness to see the 6'3" powerhouse back in a black and
white shirt. When it became obvious that his short-term future lay away from
Anfield, Carroll was keen to return to familiar territory, but it was West
Ham who eventually managed to reach agreement, with the Reds simply
unwilling to deal with the club which had profited so substantially from
their initial investment.

Balazs Dzsudzsak could leave Dynamo Moscow after West Ham link
By Juha Pal. Last Updated: May 22, 2013 7:17pm

Balazs Dzsudzsak's agent has stated that he could leave Dynamo Moscow,
amidst reports West Ham are interested. The Hungarian has been subject to
previous interest from Liverpool and Inter Milan, but reports in Russia
suggest that the Hammers have joined a number of Italian clubs in the hunt
for his signature. Dzsudzsak left Hungary in 2008 to join PSV Eindhoven, and
was sold to Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011. After just one year with the club, he
was signed by Dynamo. "Balazs is very comfortable in Moscow and would like
to perform for Dynamo," Jozsef Vorosbaranyi, the player's agent, told
Isvestia newspaper.
"However, Dzsudzsak also wants to try his hand at one of the top European
leagues. "I hope the leadership of Dynamo will consider proposals."

West Ham make a bid for AC Milan's Massimo Ambrosini, claims agent
By Simone Bargellini. Last Updated: May 22, 2013 3:31pm

The agent of Massimo Ambrosini has revealed that West Ham have made a bid
for the AC Milan midfielder. There had been rumours that Moreno Roggi,
Ambrosini's agent, had been in London to have talks with the club, a story
which Roggi denied. He did however claim that West Ham had made an offer to
the player, and that a club in the MLS had done the same. "It's true I was
in London, but not to talk about the Massimo's future," Roggi told
calciomercato.it.
"I confirm there are offers from West Ham and Major League Soccer for him,
but the situation is in stand-by. "Like every year, Massimo will first
discuss his future with AC Milan, so you have to wait again to have news."
Ambrosini has been at AC Milan since 1995, making almost 350 Serie A
appearances.

Keep or Sell? - The Defence
By Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

Jussi Jaaskelainen - 93.5% KEEP

I think everyone agrees Jussi has had a good season. Those of us who doubted
him, mainly because of his age, were proved comprehensively wrong. He got
better and better as the season wore on, and it is hardly surprising that
only 6.5% of you want rid. To my mind, though, we do need to sign a top
class goalkeeper this summer. Jussi would be a brilliant backup, but let's
set our sights on signing a good, young, British keeper. Preferably one
whose name is not Alex McCarthy.

Winston Reid 99.9 KEEP

I would love to know the identity of the one person who prevented Winston
Reid from scoring a 100% clean sweep. The fact that Winston Reid signed a
contract extension to 2015 says a lot about what he thinks the club can
achieve, but we can expect bids to come in for him this summer. Already
today we hear rumours that Arsenal want to sign him. Let's hope there are no
escape clauses in his contract. We all remember his first few matches when
he barely looked good enough for a Conference side's reserve team. It just
goes to show what can be achieved with a little patience.

George McCartney 60% SELL

I'm slightly surprised that the majority of people want to be rid of George
McCartney. To me, he is the kind of player every team needs - a good all
rounder who can play in several positions. He's never let us down, although
he does get injured rather too much. With the arrived of Mr Rat, I suspect
his opportunities will now be rather limited and he may well decide that his
future lies elsewhere. If I were the manager of one of the promoted sides,
he'd certainly be on my list of players to sign. Of course, we also have
Joey O'Brien who can play at left back, and the very promising Daniel Potts.
I hope Dan is told by Sam Allardyce that he will be first choice cover for
Razvan Rat.

James Tomkins 96.5% KEEP

James Tomkins has had a bit of an off season. Injury kept him out and he
then never managed to displace Winston Reid or James Collins. Given the form
they were in, that is hardly surprising. None of us want to see him go. I
see him as a future England international and would move heaven and earth to
keep him at the club. But I wonder whether his head might be turned as he
will surely understand that Reid and Collins will start next season as the
first choice centre backs. But both are prone to injury, so maybe his time
will come.

Joey O'Brien 85.6% KEEP

Bearing in mind he came on a free transfer and also bearing in mind his
injury history, Joey O'Brien has been a great signing by Sam Allardyce. He's
not a flamboyant player but he really has been Mr Reliable this season,
often playing out of position at left back, rather than his preferred right
back position. Next season, it will be interesting to see whether he or Guy
Demel start as first choice right back.

James Collins 98.6% KEEP

An absolute stormer of a season. At the beginning he was responsible for
giving away a couple of goals, either by bad luck or bad judgement, but
since then he has performed miracles. The timing of his challenges and
headed clearances has been perfect and his understand with Winston Reid has
been a joy to watch. David Sullivan reckons we would never have been
relegated if he hadn't been sold, and he's probably right. He's in the form
of his life.

Guy Demel 79.3% KEEP

After a sticky start Guy Demel has really established himself as first
choice right back. He's a big guy for a full back and his rampaging
attacking runs have something of a blunderbuss appearance. But he is skilful
as well as very strong and has developed an ability to get to the touchline
and put in a dangerous cross. He can be caught out of position on occasion,
but his experience usually rescues him. I wouldn't want to sell him,
although I can imagine Sam might well be looking at signing a new defender
who could play at centre half and right back, especially if James Tomkins
were to be sold.

C'mon Carroll
By SHAUN CUSTIS Published: 22nd May 2013
The Sun

ANDY CARROLL has been told to hurry up and make up his mind by West Ham.
Liverpool have agreed to sell the England striker to the Hammers for
£15million. But Carroll has been waiting to see if there are offers from
bigger clubs. Ideally he wants to return to Liverpool. But the Anfield club
have decided to cut their losses on the player they bought for £35m from
Newcastle in 2011. Toon have ruled out taking the Geordie back while Spurs,
who were showing interest, have not made any move. West Ham boss Sam
Allardyce wants an answer within the week. Meanwhjle, new left-back Razvan
Rat has vowed to turn West Ham into Euro contenders. The Romania captain,
31, turned his back on the Champions League by leaving Shakhtar Donetsk. He
said: "We can get into Europe."
