Obinna thankful for award

Fans' favourite Victor Obinna has been speaking about being voted November's
finest
09.12.2010

Victor Obinna has been speaking about being voted the SBOBET player of the
month for November. The Nigeria striker was thrilled to be recognised in the
supporter poll, and pledged to do all he can to win it again. "I am really
happy to get the award," he said. "I want to thank all the fans for voting
for me.
"It is something to be proud of and it is something that is going to help me
to work harder for West Ham. I just want to make sure we move off the bottom
of the league and get where we want to be. "I want to thank them all for
their support and also want them to keep supporting West Ham. "

Obinna's last two outings at the Boleyn Ground saw him score his first
top-flight goal in a 3-1 win against Wigan Athletic and then follow that up
with all four assists in the Carling Cup 4-0 triumph over Manchester United.
"I really enjoyed those two matches. In every game, I have played I have
tried to do my best to make sure the team wins and gets the points but these
were great matches for me. Scoring my first Premier League goal was
fantastic but it was more important to get the win in such a big game. "No
one expected us to do what we did against Manchester United, it was a shock.
The noise was unbelievable. They are the best team at the moment in England.
It was a massive win for us. I did pretty well with the assists it was nice
to get such a reward after we all put so much into the game."

Tombides learning fast

It has been a month to remember for Aussie youngster Dylan Tombides in Tony
Carr's youth team
09.12.2010

It has been quite a month for Dylan Tombides. The Australia Under-17 striker
made his reserves debut two weeks ago against Chelsea, with an impressive
cameo off the bench, having just scored the only goal against Arsenal's
youngsters in an Under-18 game. He then followed that up with a superb
strike in the Academy side's 5-0 defeat of Aldershot Town this week as Tony
Carr's team marched into the FA Youth Cup fourth round. The tall forward has
been delighted with his progress in English football. "It doesn't compare in
Australia with the level here," he said. "The football is just unbelievably
the highest standard. Football in Australia has got to come so far to catch
up. You saw against Aldershot how good it can be."

Reflecting on his 70th-minute strike, where he cut in from the flank and
fired in an unstoppable long-range drive, he said. "I am happy with the
goal, it took a while to come but I am happy with it. It was a good
performance from the lads and it was thoroughly deserved. "It was my first
time playing at Upton Park and nothing compares. This is where you want to
be in the future, even though this was just my first experience, it was
different quality."

Tombides said the FA Youth Cup was the pinnacle at this level for young
players to show their worth. "The Youth Cup is what is all about, winning
the league is good but here is where you show your true colours. After
winning 5-0, we should be full of confidence and we don't mind who we play
in the next round."

Should he carry on his bright progress, Tombides would relish the chance of
more reserves-team action under Alex Dyer. He knows he has to be patient,
especially with competition for places, but will keep working hard. "Just to
get my first start with the reserves would be nice but you've got to take
your chances when they come. There are lot of good players up there, like
Zavon Hines who just came back from an injury, and Frank Nouble. I just need
to take my time."

As well as the competition ahead of him, Tombides knows there are plenty of
other promising players chomping at the bit to break through from the U18s -
including Robert Hall, Matthias Fanimo, Blair Turgott and Danny Purdy. "It
is good for us all to get a chance," he added. "We can show we've got that
bit extra that can take the team on further."

Obinna keen to maintain form
Striker keen to fire Hammers to safety

Victor Obinna is hoping to maintain his good run of form by helping West Ham
climb off the bottom of the table. The Nigerian striker, who is on a
season-long loan from Inter Milan, has been named West Ham's player of the
month for November after a successful recent period. Obinna scored his first
Premier League goal in the 3-1 win over Wigan and then inspired West Ham to
a 4-0 win over Manchester United in the Carling Cup quarter-finals. The
23-year-old was happy to have his efforts recognised and he is determined to
help the side move clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table. "I am
really happy to get the award," Obinna told the club's official website. "It
is something to be proud of and it is something that is going to help me to
work harder for West Ham. "I just want to make sure we move off the bottom
of the league and get where we want to be. Scoring my first Premier League

Mancini wary of Hammers
City boss cautious ahead of trip to the capital
Last updated: 9th December 2010
SSN

Roberto Mancini is expecting a 'tricky' encounter when Manchester City visit
West Ham on Saturday. The Hammers are currently rooted to the bottom of the
Premier League with just 12 points and host City on the back of their 1-0
defeat to Sunderland last weekend. Mancini's side, in contrast, sit fourth
in the table and have enjoyed impressive away form so far this season, with
four wins, two draws and just two defeats on the road. But the manager is
expecting a testing clash at Upton Park, insisting the Hammers' current
place in the table does not accurately reflect their performances this term.
"West Ham will be a difficult game because they are having a bad time at the
moment, but I think they have a good squad," Mancini told City's official
website. "They don't deserve to be near the bottom of the table and it is
going to be a tricky game.

Difficult

"The last time we were there was the last game of the season, and it was
quiet but I know that Upton Park is a difficult place to go with good
supporters, and they will make it hard for us. "But we need to play the
same, away or at home, and our record away is good this season." After a
dismal start to the campaign, Avram Grant's side have already been tipped
for relegation. But Mancini is confident former Chelsea boss Grant will
steer the Hammers clear of the drop zone. "I know Avram, he's a good manager
- he got Chelsea to a Champions League final!" he added. "I think that West
Ham will stay in the Premier League."

Avram is the man for West Ham
The Sun

ROBERTO MANCINI is backing Avram Grant to keep West Ham up this season. The
Hammers are rock bottom of the Premier League ahead of a visit from
Mancini's Manchester City on Saturday. And the Italian boss said: "I know
Avram, he's a good manager — he got Chelsea to a Champions League final.
"I think that West Ham will stay in the Premier League." Mancini expects a
tough test at Upton Park, despite the Hammers' poor start to the season. He
added: "It will be a difficult game because they are having a bad time at
the moment but I think they have a good squad. "They don't deserve to be
near the bottom of the table and it is going to be a tricky game. "I know

We've got to Piq ourselves up
The Sun
Published: Today

FREDERIC PIQUIONNE wants West Ham's players to take the pressure off
under-fire boss Avram Grant. After beating Wigan and Manchester United, the
Hammers' season looked to be back on track. But they were brought crashing
back down to earth with a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland that leaves them
rooted to the foot of the table. Grant's future continues to be under
threat, with tough fixtures at home to Manchester City and at Blackburn
coming up.
But striker Piquionne is adamant the right man is in charge and has called
on his team-mates to reproduce the spirit they showed against Manchester
United in the Carling Cup. The Frenchman said: "It is not the manager who
wins matches on the pitch. We must keep our responsibilities and we've
worked hard to do that. "For the future, we need to keep this attitude to
win games. We need to work hard."

We can win without Tevez - Mancini
Published 23:00 09/12/10 By Darren Witcoop
The Mirror

Roberto Mancini has told his goal-shy Manchester City side to prove they
aren't a one-man team – by stepping out of Carlos Tevez's shadow. City have
struggled for goals all season and their job hasn't been helped with Tevez
missing against rock-bottom West Ham tomorrow. The 10-goal Argentinian
striker is banned at Upton Park after collecting five bookings. So Eastlands
chief Mancini has urged his star-studded squad to cope without their captain
and earn a win that would send them joint top of the Premier League. "I
think that this is a time when we can try to win without Carlos," he said.
"He is an important player for us. But the players that will play will have
a good game, I'm sure of that. "We know we must try to score with the other
players. There's enough quality there with Mario Balotelli, Jo, and Adam
Johnson. "If we continue to play like we did against Bolton and against
Stoke in the second half we can win without him."

The statistics make grim viewing for City fans, though. The mega-rich side
have won just once since January in games where Tevez – who pledged his
future to City this week – has not been on the scoresheet. Mancini added:
"Carlos is an important player inside the box as he's very dangerous. "He is
a fantastic player. He is one of the most important players in the world, in
Europe maybe. For us he is very important. "But if we play like we did
against Bolton, we can still win without him."

West Ham want Newcastle's Barton
Published 23:00 09/12/10 By Alan Nixon - Exclusive
The Mirror

West Ham want to buy Newcastle star Joey Barton in the transfer window - and
use his fire to blast them out of the relegation zone. The Hammers heirarchy
have identified midfield dynamo Barton as the player to give their bid to
beat the drop a real chance and they hope to do a £5m deal next month.
The ambitious Londoners also plan to offer Barton a five-year contract on
big wages as proof of their faith in him as a long-term solution rather than
just a short-term saviour. Barton's future at the Toon is now in doubt after
the departure of Chris Hughton, a manager he admired and helped him back
into the game. He is one of the Magpies players who needs to be convinced
about new boss Alan Pardew. Now Newcastle owner Mike Ashley may cash in on
Barton, who is on a huge contract that has just 18 months to run before he
can leave for nothing. Barton has returned to the limelight this season
after putting his problems behind him and his form was one of the main
reasons for the newly-promoted team's flying start. However, the change of
management has encouraged West Ham to think they have a chance of landing
him. They have been on Barton's trail for months and now believe they can
get him. The key will be the size and length of contract that Hammers
supremos David Sullivan and David Gold can put on the table for him, with
the five-year deal bound to be tempting to the 28-year-old.

Barton seems to have put many of his demons behind him - despite the punch
landed on Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen that earned him a three-game FA
ban at the end of Hughton's reign. It would be a massive outlay for West Ham
to get Barton, but they are chasing hard - although if they get him it could
mean that skipper Scott Parker is sold to one of his admirers.

Spurs back in for Hammers hero Parker
Published 23:00 09/12/10 By John Cross
The Mirror

Avram Grant is facing another make-or-break game this weekend - just a
fortnight after 'saving' West Ham's season. Grant appeared to have eased the
pressure on his shoulders by beating Wigan after the club launched a "Save
Our Season" campaign around that particular game. But despite also knocking
out holders Manchester United to reach the Carling Cup semi-finals Grant is
still walking a tightrope and needs a result against Manchester City at
Upton Park. Grant's survival chances are also likely to be hit with West Ham
facing a battle to keep midfielder Scott Parker. Tottenham boss Harry
Redknapp has made moves to sign Parker in January, and it is believed West
Ham may decide to cash in if Spurs meet the £8m asking price. Redknapp
believes Parker can boost Tottenham's title chances as he sees him as an
ideal partner for Tom Huddlestone in central midfield. But Grant will be
desperate to keep the player, especially as the club may decide to sell Matt
Upson in January because the England defender is able to leave on a free
transfer next summer.
Parker signed a long-term contract at West Ham after they rejected a Spurs
bid in the summer, but Redknapp's interest has not gone away and the
midfielder has been in superb form, even though he could go in January.
Goalkeeper Rob Green's future is also uncertain as he is unsettled amid the
problems at West Ham, while Grant is facing a fresh battle to keep his job.
Hammers co-owner David Sullivan has remained fiercely loyal to Grant, but
the Israeli needs to start getting results quickly to avoid the axe. Grant
has been left under no illusions that the win over Wigan and reaching the
Carling Cup semis will not be enough to stave off the sack if results don't
improve. Under-pressure Grant has a long contract and West Ham would have to
pay him off, so the club must now decide how long they can give the
ex-Portsmouth boss to turn things around. But West Ham face an even bigger
dilemma over Parker - selling their prize asset would leave the fans in
uproar.

Lescott wary of rock-bottom Hammers
Published 15:49 09/12/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Joleon Lescott insists Manchester City will take nothing for granted at West
Ham on Saturday. City have consolidated their position in the top four of
the Barclays Premier League by recording successive wins over Fulham and
Bolton and the Blues are now aiming to make the most of high-profile clashes
involving Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea over the next three
weekends. City know if they keep their present run going, they will not be
far off the Premier League summit by New Year's Day and ready for a
concerted push for glory in the second half of the season. On the face of
it, West Ham should not represent too much of a challenge given their woeful
form this term. However, Lescott only needs to remind himself that the
Hammers did dump Manchester United out of the Carling Cup earlier this month
and that City have lost at fellow basement dwellers Wolves this season to
realise nothing is for certain in this crazy season. "You can't take any
match for granted," he said. "West Ham are a capable side on their day and
do have a bit of momentum going into our game. "Any team in the Premier
League is capable of beating anyone, we have seen that already, so we will
have to be on our guard."

Although the Wolves game - and home draws with Blackburn and Birmingham -
suggests otherwise, Lescott believes City are a more durable outfit this
term, which makes them more likely to resist the barrage that awaits them at
Upton Park. "In previous years we have failed at those hurdles," he said.
"We are a bit more resilient this season. "We have kept a lot more clean
sheets and we are a lot harder to beat so I don't think West Ham will be
looking forward to us going there."

Barely a week after lamenting his lack of opportunities at Eastlands this
season, Lescott could now be set for a run in the side. Kolo Toure suffered
a calf injury against Bolton at the weekend and while there has been no
update on the Ivorian, Blues boss Roberto Mancini will be loathe to take a
risks with him at such a crucial stage of the season. "Getting into this
side and staying in it is the toughest challenge of my life," said Lescott.
"This season I haven't featured as much as I would have liked but I don't
have many complaints. Vincent (Kompany) and Kolo have been excellent. "I do
think I am as good as them though and I know when my chance comes I have to
take it."

WEST HAM: IT'S GREAT TO AV YOU BACK, JACK COLLISON
Daily Star
10th December 2010 By Sami Mokbel

WEST HAM midfielder Jack Collison is ready to hand under-fire boss Avram
Grant a lifeline by returning from injury ahead of schedule. The midfielder
had knee surgery in May and wasn't expected back until February at the
earliest. But his rehabilitation has gone better than expected and he could
make a shock return for the Hammers next month. The Wales international
could be back for the visit of Arsenal on January 15. Collison, 22, has
started gym strengthening work at the club's training ground and is expected
to start his pre-season campaign before the turn of the year. The club are
keen not to take any risks, but it is a big boost for Grant, who is also
without injured midfielders Thomas Hitzlsperger and Mark Noble.

West Ham ponder £3m Joey Barton bid after mentor Chris Hughton's sacking at
Newcastle
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 12:15 AM on 10th December 2010
Daily Mail

West Ham are considering a move for Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton.
The one-time England international has been enjoying a renaissance in his
controversial career with former manager Chris Hughton utilising him as a
right-sided midfielder. The 28-year-old has been credited with playing a
pivotal role in Andy Carroll's emergence and was sorely missed last Sunday
when a groin injury kept him out of Hughton's last match - a 3-1 defeat to
West Brom.
Although Barton's bad side came out again against Blackburn last month when
he punched Morten Gamst Pedersen, he has generally impressed coaching staff
and teammates with his efforts to change his ways.
But his performances on the park have impressed further. He was outstanding
in Newcastle's 2-1 victory at West Ham and that has led them to consider a
£3million bid for a player who has 18 months left on contract. Three other
Premier League sides are also interested. Meanwhile, Newcastle are
interested in former Manchester City misfit Valeri Bojinov. Club scouts
have been watching the Bulgarian striker at Parma. The 24-year-old endured
an injury-plagued spell at City then fell victim to the raft of changes made
at the club following Sven Goran Eriksson's departure.

Carew for Cole, Keane for Parker and Wayne Bridge on Loan?
West Ham Till I Die

It is getting to that, pre-transfer window, period when the speculation
starts about possible forthcoming deals.

The latest suggestion is that West Ham could be looking to sell Carlton Cole
and bring inVilla's John Carew as his replacement. According to some, Carew
will be the makeweight in a £8m Villa deal for Cole; while other reports
suggest that Cole may be off to Liverpool and that a separate deal will be
struck with Villa. Whatever way it goes, it is not a deal that particularly
appeals to me.

I would prefer to keep Carlton Cole, although I recognise that he may need
to be moved on to fund other deals. Piquionne has shown that he can lead
the attack successfully. In many ways, Piquionne is a far more subtle
striker than Cole, nowhere is this better demonstrated than his superior
ability in the air. In Cole, we have a stronger, more direct striker, who
can hold the ball up well. If Cole goes, then we probably need to bring in
another centre forward as cover for Piquionne. Otherwise, it means relying
on Benni McCarthy or Frank Nouble as cover. McCarthy should be able to do
the job, but he needs to finally step up to the plate, big time! Perhaps
Nouble is ready? He is certainly a young player that should have a big
future at the club?

The other rumour doing the rounds is that West Ham are interested in Spur's
Robbie Keane. Again, the acquisition has been linked to a swap deal for
Scott Parker. Personally, I feel that Keane is an experienced PL striker
who could be a real asset in a relegation struggle. But I do not support
the sale of Scott Parker in January. If the deal is to happen it needs to
be stand alone, but would Harry Redknapp would be interested in that?

The proposed deal for Wayne Bridge would solve the left-back problem and
strengthen the team immeasurably. Will Bridge come on loan, well the rumour
is that he wants to return to London. So, who would compete for his
signature? Possibly Spurs or Fulham? It would certainly be a bit of a coup
if the deal happens. If not, then we will probaby need to look at other
available transfer options or, failing that, promote Jordan Brown or Matt
Fry to the first team squad.

In my view, we need a left-back and an experienced striker as a bare
minimum. A naturally left sided player would also help the balance of the
team. While the club could possibly renew their interest in Blackburn
Rover's Chimbonda, who is available on a free next month, to provide
additional cover at right-back! Of course, any debate on in-coming
transfers is linked to potential departures. We must ask whether swap deal
will happen, whether at least one major asset will be sold to finance other
business; or if the club will actively look to raise funds from the sale of
Matt Upson, rather than letting him leave on a Bosman in the summer?

Finally, lets not forget that Zavon Hines is back in first team contention
and could make a major impact. Whilst, both Jack Collison and the
experienced Thomas Hitzlsperger could also return in the New Year. Having
those three players available can only be positive for the club.

West Ham players to blame for poor form not boss Grant, says star
TalkSport
By Marc Isaacs
Thursday, December 9

West Ham striker Frederic Piquionne insists players need to take more
responsibility and ease the pressure on under-fire manager Avram Grant.
After beating Wigan and Manchester United, West Ham looked to have got their
season back on track, but they were brought crashing back down to earth with
a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland that leaves them rooted at the foot of the
table. Grant's future continues to be under threat and with forthcoming
games against Manchester City and Blackburn at Ewood Park, his position will
not get any easier. But Piquionne is adamant that the right man is in charge
and they have to re-produce the spirit they showed against Manchester United
in the Carling Cup if they are to stay in the Premier League. Piquionne
said: "It's not the manager [who wins matches] on the pitch. We have to keep
our responsibilities and we've worked hard to do that. For the future, we
need to keep this attitude to win games. "I think we will win more and more
games. We need to stay in the Premier League and we need to work hard. "The
atmosphere is better because we have won these games. I think it's a great
achievement for the team and it is good for the future."

Reds, Spurs and Hammers target is "all round player"

Martin Dahlin, the agent of PSV Eindhoven centre-forward Ola Toivonen, has
suggested that his client – who has been linked with Liverpool, Tottenham
Hotspur and West Ham United - has all it takes to be a success in the
Premiership. 24 year-old Sweden international Toivonen is currently joint
second top goal-scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie with 11 along with Mounir El
Hamdaoui of Ajax and Ricky van Wolfswinkel of FC Utrecht, just one behind
Björn Vleminckx of NEC Nijmegen. Speaking exclusively to Sport.co.uk, Dahlin
described Toivonen as an all-round player with a big future ahead of him. He
said: "Ola is getting better and better all the time. "At the moment, I
think he is one of the top goal-scorers in Holland and he's scoring goals in
the Europa League and for the Swedish national team as well, so he's doing
really, really well and, with time, I'm sure that he will be good enough for
the best leagues in the world. "He's a real all-round player – he's quite
big, he's quite fast, he scores goals, works hard and he's been very
important for his team. "But to compare him with somebody else is really
hard."

West Ham United to resist January bids for Scott Parker
Spurs expected to come back in for West Ham midfielder
Avram Grant hopes to keep hold of his best player
Jamie Jackson
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 9 December 2010 17.17 GMT

West Ham United are adamant that Scott Parker will not be sold in the
January transfer window, with David Sullivan and David Gold, the co-owners,
informing Avram Grant his best player will stay at the club. Parker signed a
four-year deal, which has a further year's option, with West Ham in the
summer after Harry Redknapp attempted to buy the 30-year-old for Tottenham
Hotspur for £8m. Speculation has since arisen that West Ham's difficult
start to the season, which has left them bottom on 12 points, may cause the
club to cash in on their prize asset as his value would decrease if
relegation became inevitable. While Redknapp may make a new attempt to prise
Parker away in January, a highly-placed source close to the club said: "No
way will David Sullivan or David Gold sell Scott Parker, not at any price."

While Parker has so far scored six goals this season, which is nearly a
quarter of his career total of 26, his team-mate Victor Obinna has stated
his determination to be the driving force in West Ham's relegation fight.
Obinna scored his first league goal for the club in the 3-1 win over Wigan
Athletic and then created all four goals in West Ham's 4-0 rout of
Manchester United in the Carling Cup last week. "I just want to make sure we
move off the bottom of the league and get where we want to be," the Nigeria
forward, who is on loan from Internazionale, told the club's website.

"I really enjoyed those two matches. In every game I have played I have
tried to do my best to make sure the team wins and gets the points but these
were great matches for me. Scoring my first Premier League goal was
fantastic but it was more important to get the win in such a big game. "No
one expected us to do what we did against Manchester United, it was a shock.
The noise was unbelievable. They are the best team at the moment in England.
It was a massive win for us. I did pretty well with the assists and it was
nice to get such a reward after we all put so much into the game."

Agent dashes Bolton and West Ham's hopes of landing Real Madrid starlet
By talkSPORT
Thursday, December 9

Bolton and West Ham's hopes of signing Real Madrid's Sergio Canales have
been temporarily dashed by the player's agent. The Spanish giants admitted
recently that they have received a number of enquiries for the 19-year-old
midfielder who has seen his chances limited since the arrivals of Mesut Ozil
and Sami Khedira in the summer. Kaka is also nearing a return to fitness at
the Bernabeu and manager Jose Mourinho will find it increasingly hard to
involve the teenager in first-team affairs. But the youngster's
representative reportedly said: "I do not want the player to leave Real
Madrid." But once the former Chelsea manager has a full squad to choose from
and makes possible additions in the transfer window it is likely that the
talented playmaker will be moved on despite the pleas of his agent.

Carr delighted with win
WHUFC.com
Academy Director Tony Carr was happy with his U18s' FA Youth Cup victory
over Aldershot Town
08.12.2010

Academy Director Tony Carr was all smiles after seeing his West Ham United
U18s defeat Aldershot Town 5-0 in the FA Youth Cup third round. George
Moncur, a Doug Bergqvist own-goal, Sebastian Lletget, Dylan Tombides and
substitute Daniel Purdy were all on target as the Hammers cruised into the
last 32. On a freezing night at the Boleyn Ground, West Ham could have added
more goals to their tally, with Robert Hall hitting the post and Shots
goalkeeper Jordan Clement making a number of fine saves. To their credit,
Football League Youth Alliance side Aldershot did not give up, forcing Deniz
Mehmet into two late saves, while Paco Craig was also forced to clear one
effort off the line. "I was more than satisfied," Carr told WHUTV.
"Obviously the first objective is to get into the next round, but the second
objective is to play well and I think we did that in patches. We're in the
next round, we scored five goals and for long periods of the game we played
very well, kept possession of the ball very well and nullified them in the
sense that they created very few opportunities - just one or two late on."

The fourth-round draw will take place next week, with the Academy Director
eyeing another home draw. "I think you want home games because it gives you
that slight advantage. You know you're going to play at Upton Park rather
than play at non-league grounds, which some teams have elected to do and is
a shame because it's possibly the only opportunity the scholars may get to
play at a major stadium. "Certainly we'd like a home draw and we'll give it
our best shot."

Tomkins takes heart
WHUFC.com
Another strong display from James Tomkins was one of the positives from last
weekend
08.12.2010

James Tomkins said the West Ham United squad were eager to make up for the
disappointment of last Sunday when they welcome big-spending Manchester
City. The Hammers went down 1-0 at Sunderland with Tomkins and defensive
partner Matthew Upson the shining lights of a strong rearguard display.
Chances were at a premium in the game, with only Jordan Henderson's goal
standing out at either end. Tomkins, who was the Boleyn Ground on Tuesday
night to watch the youth team in action, took heart from his personal
performance and vowed the team would come back stronger. "We are all
disappointed to lose after a couple of wins. We went to Sunderland full of
confidence and credit to them. ""They defended well without creating too
much. We didn't create too much either, chances were few and far between but
they took the one they did create. That was the difference. We have to start
again and not be too downhearted. "We showed a lot of heart and fight in the
second half. We were a new back four and still getting together but I
thought we did well. There is a chance for us to bounce back against
Manchester City and pick up points."

The 21-year-old knows it will not be easy against City's high-level squad
but said the prospect was one to be excited about. "Of course I relish a
challenge like that against world-class players. They have spent a lot of
money in the team. You have just got to go out there and show what you can
do against them. "We are at home at Upton Park and with home fans behind us
hopefully we will get the result. We need hard work this week. We will get
the confidence back up in training and see what happens."

Carlos Tevez is set to receive another warm welcome when he returns to the
Boleyn this weekend - but will be in no mood to do his former club any
favours. The Argentinian striker, who still talks warmly of his time at West
Ham annoyed former employers Manchester United when responding to Irons fans
with a 'crossed hammers' salute during a league game three years ago. But
unlike in recent appearances, the 26-year-old should be on top of his game
this weekend as he seeks to propel current club Manchester City towards the
league's higher echelons.

Talking about the Citizens' title chances - and in another sideswipe at his
previous club - Tevez said: "The thing that would wind up Alex [Ferguson]
more than anything is for us to win something and really start achieving
things. "Let's not be thinking about Alex Ferguson and Manchester United, we
need to think of City and what we can do. What we have got to do is not to
devote any of our time to United and just focus on ourselves."

Despite scoring just seven goals during his year-long spell at West Ham -
and having waited until his 20th appearance before opening his account - the
Argentinian international was a huge success amongst Hammers fans who
identified with his never-say-die attitude. However he was even more
popular with Sheffield United FC who somehow managed to swindle West Ham out
of some £25million when finally finding a panel stupid enough to believe
that a player who averaged less than a goal every four games was responsible
for the Blades failing to win enough games to avoid finishing in the
league's bottom three.

Former Hammers boss Alan Pardew is set to return to the Premier League - and
walk straight into controversy. The 49-year-old is expected to be unveiled
as Newcastle United's successor to the recently-sacked Chris Hughton within
the next 24 hours. But news of Pardew's arrival in the North East has been
almost universally slammed by the club's supporters, still upset over the
firing of the popular Hughton by Buckinghamshire-born (and therefore not a
Cockney) owner Mike Ashley.

Pardew left West Ham four years ago this week after the team he had managed
since 2003 slumped to a record string of successive defeats. He was accused
of losing control of the dressing room and being responsible for what Alan
Curbishley subsequently referred to as the 'Baby Bentley brigade'.

However he is also widely acknowledged as the manager who delivered what
many supporters feel was the club's best season in recent years, when he led
his newly-promoted side to ninth in the league and an FA Cup final
appearance - the club's first for 25 years - in 2005/06.

Reactions to Pardew's expected arrival in the North East have been almost
universally negative. One Newcastle supporter ('IPG') posting on
nufc-forum.com tonight raged:

"I won't be getting behind Pardew and frankly would accept going down again
if was to hasten getting Ashley out of our club. I hope the crowd are
exceptionally hostile at the weekend and that Pardew receives the worst
welcome in the history of managers."

Since being fired by Eggert Magnusson in 2006, Pardew (born in Wimbledon,
also out of range of the Bow Bells) went on to manage Charlton Athletic and
Southampton - both of whom he parted company with in the same manner.

What is the Best Option at Left-Back?
West Ham Till I Die

In the summer of 2008-09, the West Ham board rubber stamped the sale of
left-back, George McCartney, to his former club, Sunderland FC. That
decision, allegedly taken over Alan Curbishley's head, was the catalyst for
the departure of the manager and the subsequent appointment of Gianfranco
Zola to the Upton Park hot seat. Very late in the 2008 summer transfer
window, the managerless club made two left-back loan signings, Walter Lopez
and Herita Illunga. The signings were so last minute that they were not
even reported before the closure of the window and were only confirmed a day
or so later.

Both loan signings were unknown quantities to us supporters. They were to
have contrasting experiences at the club. While Lopez shone in the
reserves, he never got sufficient first team opportunities and left the
following summer. In contrast, Herita Illunga came straight in to the first
team and made an impressive, instant impact. So much so that he
subsequently signed a permanent deal at the club. By the end of 2008-09 it
looked like West Ham had uncovered a real gem to fill the troublesome
left-back slot. Such was Illunga's excellent form that he became a firm
fans favorite and the first choice of new manager, Zola.

Yet, those hopes were frustrated, as Illunga's 2009-10 season was wrecked by
a series of injuries that severely restricted his first team appearances.
With the advent of the 2010-11 season, Illunga has struggled to hold down a
first team place. Indeed, he has hitherto failed to reproduce the
outstanding form of his debut season. Perhaps this is a hang over from his
former injuries? Regardless of the reasons for his loss of form, it has
forced the club to consider other options at left-back. The favorite to
fill the position was the highly promising U-21 Swiss international, Fabio
Daprela. Those hopes were foiled with the youngster's controversial sale to
Brescia in the summer transfer window of 2010. The majority of supporters
rated Daprela and had assumed, from the promise of his first team
performances in 2009-10, that he would become a first team regular. But,
for whatever reason, it did not happen.

The 2010 summer transfer window closed without the Hammers signing left-back
cover. Instead, Avaram Grant deployed auxilliary options at left-back.
This has revolved around playing either Danny Gabbidon or Tal Ben Haim in
the position. Gabbidon has covered the position in a number of PL matches
so far this season. And overall, he has performed competantly in the role.
Gabbidon has generally been solid defensively, but has not offered as much
going forward. It is not the perfect solution, but generally it has worked
reasonably well.

On other occasions, Tal Ben Haim has played there. In the Carling Cup tie
against Stoke City he looked a bit unsure, tending to drift in to central
defence and lose possession too often via wayward distribution. However,
he returned to the role in the Carling Cup quarter-final against Man Utd and
looked far more impressive. He exhibited a strong physical presence, and
firm but fair tackling, to dominate the left back defensive zone; as well as
demonstrate an impressive capacity to push forward in support of the attack.
This was the TBH that was so dominant and self-assured at Bolton Wanderers,
rather then the player that lost his way at Chelski, Man City and
Portsmouth.

At youth and reserve team level, West Ham have a very promising left-back in
Jordan Brown. While Matt Fry, currently on loan at Charlton, can play there,
as well as a left sided central defender. Perhaps one of these two young
players could provide other options at left-back? They undoubtedly have the
potential it is just whether they are ready to take on first team
responsibilities, especially in a team struggling for results? But we all
remember Glen Johnson stepping up in the 2002-3 relegation season and being
a revelation. It is just a question of whether either of these youngsters
are ready to do likewise?

So the questions to be posed are, can Herita Illunga rediscover his previous
form and go on to re-establish himself at first choice left-back? If not,
who is the best current option in the position, Tal Ben Haim or Danny
Gabbidon? Is there a case for bringing the promising Jordan Brown or Matt
Fry in to the first team set up? Or, alternatively, should we make do with
TBH or Gabbidon in the short-term, and look to sign a new left-back on the
January transfer window?

Carr ready for Boleyn tie
WHUFC.com
Academy Director Tony Carr is expecting his U18s to rise to the FA Youth Cup
challenge
06.12.2010

West Ham United begin their FA Youth Cup challenge with the visit of
Aldershot Town to the Boleyn Ground on Tuesday evening. Academy Director
Tony Carr is confident his side will have more than enough to see off their
opponents, but has warned his youngsters to guard against complacency. The
Shots, who are currently fifth in the Football League Youth Alliance South
East table, defeated AFC Wimbledon 3-0 away from home to reach the third
round.
With that result in mind, Carr knows his players will have to be at their
best to win through. "I went to the AFC Wimbledon game and Aldershot were
very well organised. Although AFC Wimbledon had the majority of the
possession, Aldershot soaked it up and looked very dangerous from set
pieces. "We have to match their work-rate as it is a cup final of sorts for
them and an opportunity for them to play on the big stage and make a mark.
"We have got to make sure we are up for the fight and I have told the boys
we cannot afford to be complacent. We went down to Plymouth Argyle in the
third round last season and they took us to extra time. "We are favourites
to progress, but sometimes that puts more pressure on us than the
opposition. We go into this game with nothing to gain and everything to
lose. "The boys have got to go out there, be professional and do their
jobs."

While Carr is aware of the threat posed by Aldershot, he remains confident
of progressing, despite having his recent training sessions affected by the
cold snap. "We are in good form and have been playing well in recent weeks
to beat Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth. The lads are feeling good and are
looking forward to playing at Upton Park. "The boys feel they are getting
things together and are ready to put in another good performance. "We
trained over the weekend and were back out on the grass on Monday, which was
good, so I expect everyone to be fully prepared for the game."

Team news-wise, Carr will have a near full-strength squad to pick from.
Centre-back Paco Craig has recovered from an ankle problem, but England
Under-17 winger Matthias Fanimo is ruled out. West Ham have won the FA Youth
Cup on three previous occasions, lifting the trophy in 1963, 1981 and 1999.
Kick-off at the Boleyn Ground on Tuesday is at 7pm. Admission is £3 for
Adults and £1 for U16s.

West Ham United U18 v Aldershot Town U18
FA Youth Cup third round
Boleyn Ground
Tuesday 7 December 2010
Kick-off: 7pm

Final score - West Ham United U18 5-0 Aldershot Town

90 mins - Almost right on 90 minutes and referee Dave Rock blows for
full-time. That was a decent night's work for the Hammers, who could have
scored more than five goals. Aldershot kept working right until the end,
though, and can take pride from their run to the third round. The
fourth-round draw will take place later this week. Keep a close eye on
whufc.com for details. The club's official website will also provide
exclusive post-match reaction, while WHUTV will have highlights and
interviews.
88 mins - Good football from the home side. Vose brings the ball forward and
plays a one-two with Hall before finding Tombides. The No9 shoots, but his
effort flicks off Purdy's heel and flies a yard wide.
86 mins - That is going to hurt on a cold night like this. Craig clears the
ball straight into Modelski, who is pole-axed. After some treatment, the
right-back is OK to continue.
83 mins - Bowerman gets in between Modelski and Craig, but he slices his
left-foot shot wide of the target from 18 yards. Good spirit from Aldershot,
though.
81 mins - How unlucky has Hall been tonight? He picks up a pass from
Tombides and cuts on to his left foot before curling a dipping shot against
the base of the post. Seconds later, he shoots again and the ball strikes
Jesson and bounces to safety.
80 mins - Aldershot have a free-kick close to where Moncur scored from
before half-time. Pilgrim tries his luck and Mehmet dives to his right to
push the ball away. The Turkey U17 goalkeeper is there again when the cross
comes back into the box.
78 mins - Very close to No6 for West Ham as Modelski scampers down the right
and crosses. Turgott controls and turns on to his left foot, but the shot
doesn't have the power to beat Clement.
77 mins - George Bowerman replaces Tom Allen for the men in yellow.
74 mins - That's a fantastic chance for a consolation goal. Allen gets in
behind and knocks the ball past Mehmet. He is forced to check back and by
the time he shoots, Craig has got back and and clears behind for a corner.
The ball comes over and Mehmet claims.
72 mins - GOAL! Purdy! Hall does brilliantly, bursting away from a defender
and getting to the byline before pulling the ball into the path of the
substitute, who despatched a powerful first-time shot past Clement from
eight yards. Good goal, that.
72 mins - Oooh! Modelski gets in behind down the right and sends a low cross
over. Hall connects at the near post, but his shot hits the side-netting.
71 mins - Another great chance for West Ham, this time for Purdy. The Irish
youngster spins away in the box and shoots left-footed, but it flies over
the top.
70 mins - GOAL! What a goal that is from Tombides, who cuts in from the left
and curls an unstoppable dipping effort past Clement and into the far
corner. Fantastic strike.
68 mins - West Ham make their final change, bringing on Purdy for Moncur.
66 mins - A second change from Carr, who replaces Driver with Danny Potts.
65 mins - Great play by Hall, who has now gone into the centre of the front
three. He controls a Sanchez clearance on his chest, receives a pass from
Tombides and spins before curling a 25-yard shot just over the top.
63 mins - Vose is involved almost immediately, but he over-hits his through
ball for Hall and Clement is there to pick the ball up.
62 mins - A change from West Ham, who replace Lletget with Vose.
61 mins - Good chance that. Turgott gets in behind and pulls the ball back
for Hall, but the No7 scuffs his shot and Clement makes the save.
60 mins - A Landais corner creates some minor havoc inside the West Ham
penalty area. The ball pings around for a while before Driver comes off his
post to smash upfield.
58 mins - Tombides sends Modelski galloping down the right touchline. He
sends a superb ball across the face of the six-yard box, but Turgott just
can't get on the end of it. There are definitely more goals in this game for
the Hammers.
56 mins - Carr has sent Vose out to warm up along the touchline. The
midfielder could be on soon, I reckon.
54 mins - Turgott sends Tombides away down the inside-left channel. He
crosses first-time, but it's too strong for Hall and rolls out for a goal
kick near the corner flag.
53 mins - Wearen comes forward from halfway and shoots from about 30 yards,
but it is wayward and flies into the Bobby Moore Stand seats.
52 mins - Hall sends a delightful ball through for Turgott to chase, but
James Scott just gets there in time to make a block.
50 mins - Aldershot break out from the back and attack two-on-two. Allen
flicks the ball on to Davies, who shoots low but too close to Mehmet, who
blocks with his legs.
49 mins - Aldershot are rocking a bit. Driver crosses and Clement spills the
ball. It takes Jesson three attempts to clear!
47 mins - GOAL! Poor old Bergqvist! The Shots captain clears straight into
Lletget and the ball ricochets off the American and past Clement and into
the net.
46 mins - Aldershot get us back underway...

Half-time score - West Ham United U18 2-0 Aldershot Town U18

47 mins - The half-time whistle is blown.
46 mins - Great play from Driver, who anticipates a pass and runs 50 yards,
holding off a defender before checking back on to his right foot. He slides
the ball across for Tombides, but he can't control.
44 mins - Tombides spins on the edge of the box and shoots left-footed. It
hits a boot and goes behind. The corner is taken short to Turgott, but his
cross is behind the players gathered in the box.
40 mins - Sanchez slips and Allen gets away, but his cross is too high.
Moments later, Aldershot have the ball again through Landais, but his
cross-shot is neither one nor the other and flies past the far post.
38 mins - Aldershot are going to have to make a change. An injury to No10
Max Worsfold, who has to be carried to the touchline. He is replaced by No15
Mo Davies.
34 mins - GOAL! Own-goal from Aldershot captain Bergqvist. Lletget sends
Driver away down the left and his low cross is towards Tombides. He stabs
the ball past Clement and Bergqvist tries to hack it off the line, but can
only help it into his own net off the base of the crossbar.
32 mins - Great football from the home side, who are popping the ball around
with real confidence now. Unfortunately, when Turgott crosses towards
Tombides, the Australian handles and the chance is lost.
31 mins - West Ham have turned up the gas here. Moncur finds Wearen, who
plays one-twos with Tombides and Lletget and looks to be in on goal, only
for the ball to run free six yards out.
30 mins - The corner is taken short to Hall, who cuts inside and then
outside a defender before shooting. The ball flies across the face of goal
and out for a throw.
29 mins - So close to a second for Moncur. Turgott tricks down the left
before cutting inside. The ball runs free into the path of Moncur, who
side-foots powerfully towards the roof of the net, only for Clement to get a
finger-tip to the ball and divert it over the top.
28 mins - Wearen gifts possession to Landais midway inside the West Ham
half. He has plenty of space in front of him, does the No7, who runs forward
and shoots over the top from 30 yards.
26 mins - Driver drives forward again down the left and cuts inside two
defenders. Good play, but he can only drag his shot wide of the near post.
25 mins - Modelski hurls a long throw into the box and Lletget tries to
flick it on towards Tombides, but defender Scott is there to volley clear.
23 mins - West Ham come again and Driver wins a left-wing corner. Turgott
again passes too close to Clement, who catches above his head.
22 mins - GOAL! Moncur most certainly did fancy it, curling an unstoppable
shot past goalkeeper Clement and into the top corner. That was a fantastic
strike from the young midfielder.
22 mins - Tombides is impeded about five yards outside the Aldershot penalty
area. Free-kick. Moncur fancies this one.
20 mins - Landais again, driving down the right and winning a corner off the
boot of Moncur. James Pilgrim crosses and Wearen heads powerfully clear.
19 mins - The Shots have come right into this. Landais sends a cross into
the box that is allowed to bounce by Sanchez. Thankfully, Mehmet has
anticipated it and grabs the ball.
18 mins - Oooh! Close. Tombides races clear down the left and crosses at
head height, but the England U17 winger can't get enough of a contact on the
ball to direct it goalwards. Aldershot go straight up the other end and
right midfielder George Landais fires a 25-yard drive a couple of yards over
the crossbar.
17 mins - Tony Carr had warned against Aldershot's strength from set plays
and the visitors nearly benefit from one. The ball drops into the six-yard
box and both Driver and Craig are unable to clear. The ball shoots across
the centre of the penalty area before Turgott slices the ball clear.
15 mins - Hall brings the ball forward again but picks the wrong option.
Instead of laying a simple ball left to Tombides in space, he tries to flick
it left with the outside of his foot towards Lletget, but the ball is headed
clear.
13 mins - Hall spreads play wide right to Modelski before swapping passes
with the Pole. Modelski crosses but it is headed away to Driver, who
controls and shoots low and wide from 25 yards.
10 mins - Hall spins away after receiving a pass from Wearen and finds
Lletget. The American spreads play left to Driver, but his cross is again
cut out at the near post.
7 mins - West Ham win a corner down the left through Driver. Turgott
crosses, but goalkeeper Jordan Clement calls loudly before claiming high
above his head.
6 mins - Henrik Breimyr tries to find Tom Allen with a long ball down the
middle, but Sanchez is there to head the ball to Craig, who completes the
clearance.
4 mins - West Ham have lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Hall wide left
and Turgott wide right and Tombides down the middle. Lletget does well in
midfield before sprinting forward and controlling Driver's lofted pass on
his chest. A defender nips in and Lletget is forced to slide in and concede
a goal kick.
3 mins - It's all West Ham so far. Wearen brings the ball forward before
finding Driver out on the left at the second attempt. The full-back crosses
right-footed, but it is low and cut out.
1 min - Modelski comes forward down the right and pings the ball into
Lletget, but the American is crowded out by two men in yellow.

7pm - West Ham get us underway kicking towards the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand
end.
6.59pm - The two teams both get together for a pre-match huddle. Aldershot's
goalkeeper forgets to join the fun, though and arrives just as his
colleagues shout 'Aldershot!' and peel away!

6.57pm - Here come the two teams, led by captains Sergio Sanchez and Doug
Bergqvist. West Ham are in claret and blue, while Aldershot are all in
yellow. In fact they look like the Spanish side Villarreal CF! Both teams
pose for team photographs ahead of the kick-off.

6.55pm - Both teams have headed back to their dressing rooms for some
last-minute instructions from their respective managers. There is quite a
small crowd in tonight, but it is cold and there is plenty of UEFA Champions
League football on the TV.

Good evening and welcome to the Boleyn Ground for tonight's FA Youth Cup
third-round meeting with Football League Youth Alliance South East
Conference side Aldershot Town. Academy Director Tony Carr MBE has named a
near full-strength team for the tie, with only winger Matthias Fanimo
unavailable due to injury. The Hammers come into the match on the back of
three consecutive FA Premier Academy League wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and
Portsmouth. Aldershot reached this stage by defeating AFC Wimbledon 3-0 in
the second round andf will be no pushovers.

Spector focused on Hammers
USA international determined to keep his place in the team
By Soriebah Kajue Last updated: 7th December 2010
SSN

Jonathan Spector has pledged to ignore the speculation about his West Ham
future to focus on preserving the club's Premier League status. The
24-year-old has started the last two games for the Hammers after being out
of the team since August. Since his return, Spector has been deployed in an
unfamiliar centre midfield role, which has not stopped him from getting
amongst the goals. The United States international is in the final year of
his contract and has been linked with an enticing switch to Bundesliga side
Cologne. Yet, he is refusing to contemplate such a deal while the Hammers
are bottom of the Premier League table.

Interest

"No I'm not aware of interest and no one at the club has said anything to me
about it," he told skysports.com. "But until I'm told differently, I will
keep on playing and doing my best for the club. "I've enjoyed my time here
and West Ham is a fantastic club. I've had five great years here. I'm not
thinking about staying or leaving, my focus is on keeping them in the
Premier League. "If I can get a run in the team I will do my best, but if
not I will continue to work hard in training. I had a chat with the manager
and it was amicable, but he knows what I can do now."

West Ham are still bottom after their latest defeat at Sunderland but, with
striking options that include Carlton Cole, Victor Obinna and Frederic
Piquionne, former Manchester United trainee Spector is confident this will
change soon. It's not just down to the strikers to score, we all have to
take some responsibility when it comes to that," he added. "But when you
look at the strikers we have, then it gives you confidence that we can get
out of this. "They are all different; Carlton's hold-up play is so good. You
know that you can play the ball up to him and he will hold it up, even if he
has three defenders around him. "He's also starting to score goals as well.
Victor is starting to find his form too and beginning to adapt to the
Premier League, while Freddy started the season well for us. "So I'm
confident we have the quality to get up the table."

Daily WHUFC News - 7th December 2010

Skipper stands firm
WHUFC.com
Matthew Upson believes West Ham United can return to winning ways at the end
of the week
06.12.2010

Matthew Upson admitted Sunderland had out-boxed West Ham United during a
closely-fought Barclays Premier League bout at the Stadium of Light.
England midfielder Jordan Henderson landed the knockout blow, sending a
rising first-time drive past Robert Green's out-stretched right glove eleven
minutes before half-time. Captain Upson conceded that, had the match been a
boxing match, the Black Cats would have won a marginal decision despite a
spirited display from the Hammers. "We don't really feel like we laid too
much of a glove on them, at least as much as we wanted to. It was a decent
performance but we're a little bit disappointed coming away from a game
where perhaps we could have thrown a bit more at them and created a bit more
and possibly taken some points."

The visitors mounted a strong defence during the opening stages, only to let
their guard down for Henderson's winner. Asamoah Gyan sprung the offside
trap before cutting the ball back into the path of the youngster, who drove
an unstoppable shot inside Green's far post. "It wasn't so much just the
final third. In the first half we didn't pass the ball well enough or keep
the ball well enough and they had a lot possession without really hurting us
apart from the time when they scored. "The second half was a better effort.
We had a bit more of a positive effort going forward. We got into the box a
bit more often and looked a bit dangerous and as if we were going to score.
We're just a little bit disappointed coming away having lost."

While he was naturally unhappy to leave Wearside without a point to show for
his team's efforts, Upson insisted that the Hammers were still in a better
place psychologically following victories over Wigan Athletic and Manchester
United - the latter being dismantled 4-0 in the Carling Cup quarter-finals.
"We've had a big week, obviously with the big game on Tuesday, so it would
have been nice to have kept a non-losing streak going, as such. To have
taken a point would have been a really good result after the week we've had.
"It wasn't to be but we've got to take the positives from the whole week
really, regroup, and go again next Saturday. "I think we've improved. We
look like we've got a chance whereas, maybe two weeks ago, we weren't
looking in such a positive state as we are now. It's good that the team can
feel like that and I'm going into every game thinking we can take something
from it."

It will be important for every player in claret and blue to share that
positive attitude when West Ham host big-spending Manchester City at the
Boleyn Ground this coming Saturday afternoon. Upson, for one, is determined
to build on last week's two successes on home turf. "We need to set about it
with a great attitude and a high tempo and really make them aware that we're
up for the fight. We need to set our stall out like we have in our last two
home games, really take it to them, press the ball and decide how the game
will pan out. I'm looking forward to it."

the move which, should West Ham's bid be accepted, will be completed in time
for the start of the 2014/15 season. As recently revealed in a KUMB.com poll
(the results of which you can see here) the majority of supporters remain
opposed to the move and it is hoped that the website will give fans the
opportunity to express their reasons for opting to stay at the Boleyn
Ground.
The main bone of contention is the club's plan to keep the stadium's running
track in situ, meaning that supporters will be some considerable distance
from the pitch with views akin to those at the new Wembley Stadium. This is
unacceptable to many fans who feel it is necessary for the stands to be as
close to the field of play as possible. It is also claimed that the club
have failed to keep to their ten point pledge as revealed at the end of last
season, in which it was stated that the club will 'listen to supporters'.
As of yet, the board have failed to respond to fans' fears regarding the
move which will see the Boleyn
Ground close after 106 years as West Ham's home.

Upson calls for fighting spirit
Hammers skipper calls on players to dig deep in basement battle
By Chris Burton Last updated: 6th December 2010
SSN

Matthew Upson claims West Ham were out-boxed by Sunderland, with the Hammers
barely throwing a punch. The Hammers slipped back to the foot of the Premier
League table on Sunday after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light.
They offered some resistance in the North East, but the Black Cats were able
to fend off their sporadic attacks with relative ease. Upson admits Avram
Grant's side need to show more stomach for a fight over the coming weeks if
they are to climb off the canvas, with three points still separating them
from safety. Using a boxing analogy to explain the defeat on Wearside, the
England international told the club's official website: "We don't feel like
we laid too much of a glove on them, at least as much as we wanted to. "It
was a decent performance but we're a little bit disappointed coming away
from a game where perhaps we could have thrown a bit more at them and
created a bit more and possibly taken some points." Despite suffering an
eighth defeat of the season on Sunday, Upson believes the Hammers have begun
to show signs of improvement.

Improved

They may have been unable to build on last week's morale-boosting 4-0
hammering of Manchester United in the Carling Cup, but feel they can welcome
Manchester City to Upton Park on Saturday with their heads held high. He
added: "We've had a big week, obviously with the big game on Tuesday
(against United), so it would have been nice to have kept a non-losing
streak going, as such. To have taken a point would have been a really good
result after the week we've had. "It wasn't to be but we've got to take the
positives from the whole week really, regroup, and go again next Saturday.
"I think we've improved. We look like we've got a chance whereas, maybe two
weeks ago, we weren't looking in such a positive state as we are now. "It's
good that the team can feel like that and I'm going into every game thinking
we can take something from it."

On the weekend meeting with City, he said: "We need to set about it with a
great attitude and high tempo and really make them aware that we're up for
the fight. "We need to set our stall out like we have in our past two home
games, really take it to them, press the ball and decide how the game will
pan out. I'm looking forward to it."

Prem duo keep tabs on Henry
Millwall winger catching the eye in the Championship
By Pete O'Rourke Last updated: 6th December 2010

Skysports.com understands Premier League duo Stoke City and West Ham United
are tracking Millwall winger James Henry. The 21-year-old joined Millwall
from Reading in the summer on a three-year contract after impressing in two
loan spells at The Den. Henry has continued to catch the eye with the Lions
in the Championship as Kenny Jackett's side sit in the top half of the
table. The wide-man's consistent performances have not gone unnoticed higher
up the ladder, with clubs taking note ahead of the January transfer window.
Stoke and West Ham are both monitoring Henry, who scored his first
Championship goal of the season in the Lions' impressive 3-0 success over
Scunthorpe at the weekend.

Hammers register Carew interest as Cole nears the exit door
Published 23:00 06/12/10 By James Nursey
The Mirror

West Ham are among the January suitors for John Carew and aim to ship out
Carlton Cole to move for the Aston Villa striker. Villa boss Gerard Houllier
is desperate to offload unhappy hitman Carew, 31, next month. The pair do
not get on from their time together at Lyon and Villa want the
£52,000-a-week marksman off their huge wage bill. The struggling Hammers
have registered an interest in the Norwegian international, who fancies a
move to London.
West Ham manager Avram Grant has admitted the club will listen to offers for
struggling striker Cole, who could go to Liverpool. And if Cole, 27, leaves,
then Carew may replace him as he is available for just a nominal fee with
his contract up next summer. Houllier is also stepping up his search for new
players next month and is determined to bring in at least one new keeper.
Villa have been told they can have Rangers shot-stopper Allan McGregor for a
bargain £2million. Cash-strapped Rangers intend to sell McGregor,28, unless
the club is taken-over. Houllier wants to find a long-term successor for US
veteran Brad Friedel,39, who is out of contract in the summer. Villa
goal-keeping guru Rafael Gonzalez watched 6ft Scottish international
McGregor in action recently against Manchester United. Villa are also
keeping tabs on United's back-up shot-stopper Tomasz Kuszczak and
Middlesbrough's Jason Steele. Houllier could buy two new keepers as deputy
Brad Guzan is out of favour. If Villa are successful in their pursuit of a
new shot-stopper, Friedel may go on a free transfer to MLS side Columbus
Crew who want him as a player-coach.

Hammers target Bridge in City fire sale
December 6, 2010
ESPN
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

West Ham hope to take Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge on loan in
January as Roberto Mancini begins offloading players to make way for the
next wave of big signings at Eastlands. Blackburn Rovers are also keen on a
temporary deal for the former Chelsea left-back, with Bridge seemingly
reluctant to return to London. At the start of the season, Mancini made it
clear to Bridge that he was part of City's future plans, but the manger has
since publicly rebuked the 30-year-old, saying he cannot give him more
playing time because he is always injured. Meanwhile, Manchester City have
targeted Benfica's brilliant Brazilian centre half David Luiz, Wolfsburg
centre-forward Edin Dzeko and Barcelona full-back Dani Alves. City have
moved for Alves after contract talks with Barcelona broke down, but the
Catalan club won't sell the Brazilian if there is any chance of agreeing a
new deal. Wolfsburg have recently slapped a ¬40 million price tag on Dzeko
and Benfica are compelled to sell if City agree to the buyout clause Luiz's
contract. City's wealthy owners are willing to swallow big losses on
outgoing players, and pay what it takes to land the replacements Mancini
believes will enable the club to cement a Champions League place. The
surplus players are reported to be England internationals Joleon Lescott,
Shaun Wright-Phillips, plus three centre-forwards, Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque
Santa Cruz and Jo.

Tottenham and Liverpool prepare Parker bids
ESPNsoccernet staff
December 6, 2010

Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have made Scott Parker their top January
transfer target, but West Ham United are refusing to sell their prized
asset.
It would take a massive bid to persuade the Hammers to change their minds,
but the club are expecting a renewed bid for their influential midfielder,
who only recently signed a new record-breaking five-year contract. West Ham
are perturbed to discover that their captain is once again a target after
the club threatened to report Tottenham to the Premier League for their
pursuit of Parker in August. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had a £7 million
offer turned down in August and West Ham are preparing to rebuff an improved
£8 million bid. The club are shocked that a source from inside Upton Park
apparently suggested that Parker wants to leave and that the club would
reluctantly accept his request to switch to a big club. West Ham want Parker
to stay and honour his new contract. But Spurs are not alone now in the hunt
to prise Parker away. Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has money to spend in
January after the Anfield takeover and has earmarked the midfielder as one
of this top priorities. ESPNsoccernet reported in the summer that it would
take an offer approaching £20 million to tempt the Hammers to even think
about selling - and neither Spurs nor Liverpool would pay that much for a
30-year-old player.

WEST HAM SHOULD DITCH COLE
MONDAY, 06/12/2010
SHOOT
by Elliot Dawson, Shoot's West Ham blogger

It has been a huge week for West Ham United. Back-to-back wins against Wigan
and Manchester United took us off the bottom of the Premier League table and
into the semi-finals of the League Cup. With seven goals scored, and only
one conceded, we travelled to the Stadium of Light confident of stretching
our unbeaten run.

Sunderland had only beaten us four times in 18 games before Sunday's clash,
with their last win in the league coming over two years ago. We went into
the match looking for our first away win of the season knowing that a draw
would save us from the ignominy of another week as relegation favourites.

However, once again we were subjected to a miserable performance from the
players who never looked interested in getting anything from the
game.Following a poor start, it came as no surprise when in the 34th minute
some woeful defending allowed Asamoah Gyan to skip through unchallenged and
set up Jordan Henderson for the opening goal. Moments later Gyan could have
doubled the lead when he was unlucky to see a deft chip strike the bar with
Rob Green a mere spectator.

With almost an hour of the match remaining there was still plenty of time
left to salvage a result. Jonathan Spector, retaining his place in the team
after an impressive midweek display, could have drawn us level after
pirouetting through the heart of the Black Cats defence. But his composure
deserted him when he needed it most and from that moment the game slipped
slowly from our grasp.

There are very few positives to take from result. Our defence was too
frequently and easily breached. Shooting opportunities were created more by
luck than judgement and nothing we did ever really looked like troubling the
score-line.

The fact that we didn't completely collapse, despite some intense periods of
pressure, is credit to the work Wally Downes has done in his brief spell at
the club but there's clearly much still to do.

It is difficult to see where we go from here – our mini-revival has proven
to be yet another false dawn. We were a shambles from start to finish and
deserved to leave Wearside empty-handed.

The 1-0 defeat was our eighth loss of the season. We can lament the missed
opportunity to put breathing space between us and our bottom-three rivals
but we can't deny that our position reflects our performances this season.

It's clear changes have to be made, including stripping the club of it's
dead-wood. Carlton Cole in particular would be a welcome departure,
especially if the rumours of a £10m transfer fee are to be believed. Other
like Luis Boa Morte, Danny Gabbidon and Kieron Dyer will also need to
improve quickly if they're to avoid the New Year bargain bin.

The time has come for change at Upton Park. For the sake of our club's great
traditions we can only hope that they don't come too late.

A Lost Opportunity, But We Have To Try to Dig in and Push On!
West Ham Till I Die

The Sunderland result was a great disappointment. The challenge was to
follow up on the victories over Wigan and Man Utd, with a creditable three
points at the Stadium of Light. In short, to demonstrate that most valuable
of traits, consistency! Unfortunately, consistency has eluded the Hammers
side all season and, once again, this proved to be the case. Only, this
time it was West Ham's attacking play that fell short, not an increasingly
solid defence.

Indeed, the side defended well again, with James Tomkins exceptional
alongside Matt Upson. Tal Ben Haim covered well at right-back and Danny
Gabbidon did a reasonable job in the troublesome left-back slot.
Similarly, Parker, Spector and Boa Morte were industrious, although midfield
creativity was in distinctly short supply. Perhaps it was the effectiveness
of Sunderland's pressing game, but we played far too many square balls and
back passes. In short, the team failed to play with the movement,
penetration and invention of the previous two games.

Worryingly, Sunderland beat us to the ball, with an urgency, and will to win
that we did not often match. This was particularly true in the first half,
where Sky calculated that Sunderland had 70% of the possession!
Sunderland's winning goal had a touch of off-side about it, but there was no
questioning the quality of Henderson's finish.

In the second half, West Ham had far more of the play, but still failed to
muster many threats in the, all important, final third. The nearest we
came to equalising was an Obinna shot that went desperately close. Apart
from that I can only recall an excellent effort by Carlton Cole, in which he
turned Anton Ferdinand (a la Johnny Evans) and fired just wide of the post;
and a scuffed shot at the end of a surging run by Jonathan Spector. There
was also a clear foul on Kieran Dyer in the box, near the bye-line, that the
referee failed to penalise. Other talking points were the alleged two
footed tackle by Boa Morte on Kieron Richardson and the continuing harsh
treatment that Carlton Cole appears to receive from referees whenever he
challenges for 50/50 balls.

However, on the balance of play, Sunderland just about deserved their
victory. We let ourselves down on the day, but, there was not that much to
choose between the two sides, regardless. We could and should have beaten
Sunderland, but we did not raise our attacking play to the levels formerly
achieved in beating Wigan and Man Utd. But it was still a highly
competitive match and, in the absence of the current PL table, you would
not have guessed that there were 12/13 places separating them. So far this
season, apart from abject away defeat to Liverpool, it is true that we have
not suffered the heavy defeats that are invariably a trade mark of
relegation strugglers. Our essential problem has been that we have drawn
far too many games that we should really have won.

An illness derailed my plans to attend the match. And I ended up watching
Sky's coverage. Thankfully, I do not rely on Sky live match
commentaries/analysis that often, because I am usually in attendance. In
the end I turned off the sound and just watched the action, minus the
delights of the expert commentary.

There is no pretending that we are presently in a good place, but our
situation is not hopeless. There is still a lot of football to be played
and points to be won. The club need to follow through on their intention to
secure a specialist attacking coach, hopefully the newly qualified Paulo Di
Canio, to fine tune the forward play and sharpen the finishing. We must dig
in and try to push on in the period prior to the opening of the January
transfer window. Immediate remedies are only to be found via hard work on
the training ground.

When the window does open we should probably target an experienced left-back
and a striker. The board need to make some decent funds available make the
deals a reality. They might well state that selling to buy is the only
viable option open to the club, but that could merely contrive to weaken one
area of the squad in an attempt to strength another. Far better, ideally,
to keep the current squad together and endeavour to add more quality and
strength in depth. This would be a case of investing to save the c.£40m
potential loss of revenue arising from a disastrous relegation from the PL.
Surely even the banks, to whom West Ham are indebted, can see the wisdom and
necessity of taking such a course of action?

The Sunderland defeat, has now placed greater pressure on West Ham getting a
result against Man City, this weekend. Hopefully, the players will once
again respond to the challenge and deliver another memorable home victory.
Man City may have spent c.£200m to assemble their expensive squad, and can
undoubtedly be exceptional on their day, but we can seek some reassurance in
the fact that they do not always travel that well.

Lets hope that they are not firing on all cylinders and that the likes of
Carlito Tevez have an off day. I would strongly suggest that we unsettle
him with another vocal display of affection and unadulterated hero worship.
From the perspective of the West Ham players, they need to rediscover the
commitment and invention that they recently unleashed on the red side of
Manchester. If they do that, driven on by the Upton Park crowd, we will
have a chance of getting a result.

SJ. Chandos.

Daily WHUFC News - 6th December 2010

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
A setback at Sunderland still contained positives for Avram Grant to take
into a big week in training
06.12.2010

Avram Grant was keen to emphasise the achievement of his players over the
previous seven days as a whole following the obvious frustration of a 1-0
reverse at Sunderland. The final match of a three-game spell saw the Hammers
undone by one superb first-half move by the home side at a frozen Stadium of
Light - with Asamoah Gyan beating the offside trap and pulling back for
Jordan Henderson to score the only goal. It was tough to take after the wins
against Wigan Athletic and Manchester United, especially as the manager knew
his men could - and perhaps should - have added a precious point.
At the back, James Tomkins and Matthew Upson were particularly solid again
as a central defensive partnership in front of a hard-working Robert Green.
But, while Sunderland's potent strikeforce of Gyan, Danny Welbeck and Darren
Bent were kept out, so were the forward thrusts equally repelled at the
other end. Victor Obinna hit a post in the second half while he, Jonathan
Spector and Carlton Cole all flashed decent efforts just wide. "It was a
disappointing end to a good week," said Grant, who was mainly left to lament
the failure to find the killer final ball in attacking positions. "Although,
I was pleased with the spirit we showed, in the first half we didn't show
the quality we can - even if the organisation was there. The second half we
were better but we needed to score and they then started to hit us on the
counterattack. "The difference between one-zero and zero-zero is not so
great. We need to do something because we cannot keep not winning away from
home - even it if it is very difficult here where not even one team has won
this season in the league. Sunderland's home record is amazing and it was
not easy for us. "We need to pay attention to all details if we want to
win."

That winning mentality is certainly familiar to Grant's team after the
previous two results and he was certain they would soon reproduce that on
the road - even if it is now 26 awaydays since August 2009 since the last
league triumph. "We have been very good in the last two games at home. This
is great and we need to now bring that to our away form. The home fans were
great this week and the fans who came such a long way today were also great,
especially in this weather. We have everything behind us to do it and we
will do it. "It is a case of putting this defeat behind us and showing again
what we have done at the start of the week. We are not cut adrift in the
league and this is a gap we can close - especially if we reproduce the form
we had at the start of the week. "This week as a whole has given us
confidence. The second half showed us today that we can do it. The spirit is
there and there is a long way to go. I have seen enough to give me plenty of
encouragement. But we have to fight hard."

Sunderland 1 - 0 West Ham
By Mike Lawrence
BBC.co.uk

A first-half goal by Jordan Henderson earned Sunderland victory and sent
West Ham United back to the bottom of the Premier League. Record signing
Asamoah Gyan crossed from the right to find Henderson who fired past Hammers
keeper Rob Green. Victor Obinna hit the post in the second half with Scott
Parker also going close to an equaliser. Gyan and Kieran Richardson both had
chances to increase the lead for Sunderland. The result moves Sunderland up
to seventh in the Premier League table while West Ham slip below
Wolverhampton Wanderers on goals scored with both sides having the same goal
difference.

With injury problems at the back, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce decided
attack was the best form of defence and selected Gyan, Darren Bent and Danny
Welbeck up front. Sunderland were looking to maintain their unbeaten home
record in the Premier League, while the visitors arrived in the North East
on the back of two wins, 3-1 over Wigan in the league last weekend and 4-0
against Manchester United in the Carling Cup on Tuesday. Both sides started
the game in a positive fashion but scoring chances were at a premium before
the goal. After Richardson had skied a good chance into the upper stand,
Henderson then placed a dangerous looking cross into the penalty area which
West Ham defender Tal Ben-Haim had to head behind for a corner.
Bent also tried a speculative shot from the edge of the box which went wide,
while at the other end Obinna scuffed a long-range effort which failed to
trouble Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon.

Despite the number of Sunderland strikers on the pitch, the opening goal
came from midfielder Henderson on 34 minutes. Nedum Onuoha floated a long
ball to record-signing Gyan and the Ghanaian placed a superb cross into the
box from the right which Henderson fired home for his first goal in almost a
year. West Ham almost drew level at the start of the second half when Obinna
took advantage of a mix up in the Sunderland defence to find Carlton Cole,
whose shot whistled past Gordon's left-hand post. The lively Gyan then
struck a fierce shot which Green parried but the game lost some of its flow
as it entered the final 20 minutes, with both managers making substitutions.
Despite the defeat West Ham manager Avram Grant - assisted on the touchline
by new defensive coach Wally Downes who was barking out orders throughout
the game - will certainly feel the team are starting to look more difficult
to beat. His opposite number Bruce will be relieved that his team were able
to hold on to their lead as they have conceded late goals on a number of
occasions this season.

West Ham boss Grant optimistic despite defeat
BBC.co.uk

Avram Grant believes West Ham will soon be moving off the bottom of the
table despite suffering their eighth league defeat of the season at
Sunderland.
The Hammers lost 1-0 as a result of Jordan Henderson's strike, leaving them
with 12 points from 16 games. "The team are progressing and lately we've
been more efficient than we have been before," said manager Grant.
"Unfortunately, it didn't happen on Sunday, but we can take a lot from this
game and move forward."

West Ham last won away on the opening day of last season when they beat
Wolves 2-0, but Grant added: "In the second half we could have earned a
draw. "We were better after the break and created a few chances to score. In
the first half. They had a lot of possession but I think the only chance
they create d led to their goal. "On most of our away defeats the difference
has been a single goal which means we can turn it around and we have to do
it as we don't want to go the whole season without winning away. "We are
three points from 17th place and six points from I don't know which place,
but this is a gap we can close if we continue to play like we have played in
the last two months."

Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce said he was delighted with the way
scorer Jordan Henderson responded to hints that he may rested as his side
moved up to seventh in the Premier League. "Sometimes you just throw a
little sprat now and again - to be fair, he trained as if to say 'Please
don't leave me out' in the last couple of days, so he did it himself," said
Bruce. "He was desperate to play, like he is every week. He was terrific
today and it was good to see him score again. "There will be a time when the
kid needs a rest. He has played for 18 months now solid and has had a
meteoric rise to a month ago playing for England, which is fantastic. "My
job is to look after and protect him. There is going to be a time with a
young player when they do need a rest to give him a break now and again."

Sunderland's win meant that they retained their unbeaten record at home this
season. And Bruce is hoping that they can maintain their good form of the
first half of the season into the New Year. "Last year we faded away - we
had a wonderful start and were in a position similar to this and we faded
away," he added. "I do believe the squad has got better and we've got more
depth which we didn't have last year, so that just shows what a decent squad
we are building."

Sunderland 1 West Ham Utd 0
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 5th December 2010
By: Staff Writer

West Ham are back at the bottom of the Premier League after going down at
the Stadium of Light to Jordan Henderson's first half strike. The new
England international scored the only goal of the game on 34 minutes to heap
more misery on Avram Grant and his squad, now in serious danger of going
into Christmas bottom of the league. United went into the game in 19th place
following Wolves' 3-0 defeat at Blackburn yesterday - but their respite from
the bottom of the pile lasted just 24 hours as the single-goal defeat was
enough to see them fall below Wanderers by virtue of goal scored (Wolves' 17
to West Ham's 14, with both teams having a goal difference of -13). Despite
the refreshing performance against Manchester United in midweek it was back
to the old ways today as once again, the Hammers positioned ten men behind
the ball in hope of catching their hosts on the break. New coach Wally
Downes, praised so highly in the past week for his influence in the last two
solid performances will ceertainly have questions to ask of his defensive
unit today - for it was a failed offside trap that led to the game's only
goal.

An unattentive Tal Ben Haim, retained in the starting XI following Tuesday
night's excellent outing found himself adrift of his three fellow defenders
allowing Asamoah Gyan to break down the right. Gyan's cross was perfectly
weighted for the young Henderson who found the back of the net from 10 yards
with a placed effort, giving the Black Cats a win that takes them to an
impressive 7th place. Although the Hammers had their chances - most notably
Jonathan Spector almost replicating his mazy run of Tuesday night with an
effort that missed it's target by inches and Victor Obinna hitting the post
with a second half effort - there was little of the desire or drive that
typified the thrashing of Manchester United.

West Ham set out their stall to defend in numbers early on, hoping to catch
Sunderland on the break. Only at Birmingham this season has this style of
play proved fruitful - not withstanding how painful it is to watch a West
Ham team position ten (sometimes 11) men behind the ball, in their own third
of the pitch, in hope of snatching a 1-0 win. Former manager Alan Curbishley
went from hero to zero in a matter of months as a result of his dour,
negative tactics. Avram Grant - with just two league wins to boast of this
season - will do well to note that West Ham supporters expect more from
their team - and not just in one-off cup games.

Sunderland seal Hammers win
Local boy wins game for Black Cats as Hammers go bottom
Last updated: 5th December 2010
SSN

Man of the match: Young midfielder Jordan Henderson wins the prize following
an enterprising display.

Goal of the match: Asamoah Gyan found space down the right before squaring
for Jordan Henderson to guide the ball deftly past Green...a superb finish!

Moment of the match: Luis Boa Morte was lucky not to see a straight red card
for a late two-footed tackle on Kieran Richardson six minutes into the game.

Save of the match: Defender James Tomkins did well to block Danny Welbeck's
goalbound effort late on.

Talking point: Are Sunderland strong enough to claim a European spot this
season? Can West Ham put a run of winning results together to stay up?

Sunderland snatched all three points at the Stadium of Light thanks to
Jordan Henderson's first goal of the season, which sent West Ham back to the
foot of the table. The Black Cats struck decisively on a cold afternoon on
Wearside in the 34th minute thanks to a well-worked team goal. Nedum Onuoha
lifted the ball into the channel for Asamoah Gyan, whose reverse pass found
the run of 20-year-old England international Henderson, who slotted his
left-foot shot past Robert Green. Just minutes after the opening goal, Gyan
clipped the top of the crossbar with a cross-cum-shot. And, towards the end
of the half, Craig Gordon was relieved to see Jonathan Spector shoot just
wide after a surging run towards goal. Besides the goal, the main talking
point arrived six minutes into the contest when Luis Boa Morte was lucky not
to see a straight red card for a late two-footed tackle on Kieran
Richardson. Victor Obinna came closest to snatching a point with a late
effort which struck the outside of the post, but the Black Cats were good
value for a victory which left them in seventh place. The Hammers are still
looking for their first away win since the opening game of last season when
they defeated Wolves.

Brighter

Manager Steve Bruce has spent much of the season to date pleading with his
midfielders to help out strikers Darren Bent and Gyan on the goals front,
and Henderson's contribution will have been as welcome to him as it was to
the bulk of a crowd of 36,940 on a bitterly cold Wearside afternoon. The
Hammers arrived on Wearside still basking in the glory of their midweek
Carling Cup demolition of Manchester United, but knowing the revival they
launched in the league with last weekend's 3-1 win over Wigan was the
overwhelming priority. Avram Grant's men had climbed from the foot of the
table without kicking a ball as a result of Wolves' defeat at Blackburn 24
hours earlier, and as the only side to have won at the Stadium of Light this
season - a 2-1 Carling Cup success in September - they had high hopes of
extending a run of six games which had brought just one defeat. However,
that home record has been jealously guarded by Bruce's men and, having lost
just their third league game of the campaign at Wolves last Saturday, they
were determined to improve it further. The hosts started the game in far
brighter fashion, and their cause might have been helped had referee Martin
Atkinson ruled that Boa Morte's two-footed sixth-minute challenge on
Richardson was worthy of a red rather than a yellow card.

Skipper Lee Cattermole forced the first save of the game from Green with a
long-range 15th-minute effort which skidded trickily off the turf in front
of the keeper, although opposite number Gordon had to get his positioning
right to claim Obinna's free-kick seven minutes later. But as the first half
wore on, Sunderland started to threaten on a more regular basis and, after
Bent had warmed Green's hands with a dipping long-range shot, they forced
their way ahead 11 minutes before the break. Record signing Gyan, back in
the starting line-up in place of Bolo Zenden, found space down the right
before squaring for Henderson to guide the ball deftly past Green. Gyan
clipped the bar with a curling shot two minutes later, but the Hammers might
have got themselves back on to level terms with 44 minutes gone. Midfielder
Spector, who scored twice against United, embarked upon a surging run which
took him deep into the Sunderland penalty area, but he lost his balance as
he shot under pressure from Anton Ferdinand and stabbed his effort just
wide.

Determined
The Hammers returned in determined mood and might have wiped out
Sunderland's lead within four minutes. John Mensah slipped as Carlton Cole
turned on Obinna's pass and drilled a left-foot shot across Gordon, but
unfortunately for him, just wide of the far post. The visitors were enjoying
their most dominant period of the game, but despite Sunderland's
carelessness in possession, were finding clear-cut chances at a premium.
Gyan spooned a 57th-minute effort high over the crossbar as he failed to
make the most of Richardson's lay-off, but as Kieron Dyer started to make
his presence felt, the impetus was very much with the Hammers. Richardson
forced a 64th-minute save from Green, who had to be at his best to turn away
Gyan's stinging drive two minutes later, but the Hammers might have snatched
a point with 11 minutes remaining. Obinna picked up possession inside the
box and blasted towards Gordon's bottom right-hand corner, only to see the
ball clip the outside of the post and drop to safety. However, Sunderland
should have killed off the Hammers once and for all with five minutes
remaining. Substitute Steed Malbranque went into a 50-50 with Green and saw
the ball come back off the keeper and fall to Welbeck, only for James
Tomkins to get in a vital block as the fans behind the goal waited for the
net to bulge.

Parker earns Grant praise
Hammers boss hails all-action midfielder
By Chris Burton Last updated: 5th December 2010

Avram Grant feels Scott Parker has matured into one of the best all-round
midfielders in England. The West Ham boss has seen Parker become an integral
part of his plans this term, with his endless energy helping to inspire
those around him. The 30-year-old filled a similar role for the Hammers last
season, leading from the front as survival was secured under the guidance of
Gianfranco Zola. Grant admits that Parker must now be regarded as one of the
Premier League's leading lights, with his consistency marking him out an
elite performer. The Israeli coach said: "Even defensive midfielders need to
attack sometimes and cause problems to the other team, because if you look
at the game five years ago it's physically more quick, and you need
intelligent players to think quickly. I think that's one of his qualities.
"Teams are more organised than before and you need someone that can come
from the back. He's intelligent enough to know when to do it."

Grant is also of the opinion that Parker deserves a regular place in the
England squad, with there being few players capable of doing the job he
does.
"He'd be very good for England," he added. "He's not easy to play against
because he knows how to tackle, to block, to play very physically and also
to cause problems to the other team. "Look at all the midfielders in Europe,
there's not many like him that can do many things. I was a national team
manager (with Israel). Sometimes you need to look."

Grant remaining positive
Hammers boss convinced first away win will come
Last updated: 5th December 2010

West Ham manager Avram Grant maintained that his squad will remain in
positive mood despite a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland. Grant believes he has the
squad to survive the drop this season after watching his side fall back to
the bottom of the Premier League table following Jordan Henderson's
match-winning strike. The Hammers have not collected all three points on the
road since the opening day of last season which is proving a costly failing.
He told Sky Sports: "We were better in the second half. We started the game
not so good. We had chances to score so we're disappointed. "We are playing
away at Sunderland and we had chances in the second half. They had
possession and they scored."

Improve

When asked about the Hammers' miserable away form, having secured just three
points and scored four goals all season, Grant replied: "It's fair to say
that we need to improve, the gap is not too big, we came here and got a
one-goal loss. "I think we have a very good squad to stay up. We showed that
in our last two games." Grant remained confident he has the players to
survive relegation but hinted at strengthening his squad come January,
adding: "We have a good squad but we do want to be stronger."

Blues - Gold is welcome
City offer olive branch to former co-chairman

Former Birmingham chairman David Gold will be a 'welcome visitor' the next
time West Ham travel to St Andrews. The current Hammers co-chief was banned
from attending the East Londoners' Premier League clash at the Blues last
month after a war of words with City acting chairman Peter Pannu.
But Birmingham now say he will be welcome to attend the Carling Cup clash
between the two sides in January. Pannu added: "Birmingham City would like
to take this opportunity to confirm David Gold is welcome at the stadium and
the Blues' board look forward to seeing him, and of course David Sullivan
and all members of the West Ham Board, at the game." Gold and Sullivan
agreed a deal to take over the Hammers earlier in the year and following
their departure from Birmingham, Gold was quoted as describing Pannu as
'disgusting'. This came after the experienced businessman claimed promises
that he would be given an honorary role with the Blues were not fulfilled.

Hend of the road for Hammers
The Sun
By DAVID FACEY
Published: Today

JORDAN HENDERSON sent West Ham crashing back to rock bottom of the Premier
League on a day when he was supposed to be kicking his heels in the stands.
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce announced he planned to give the England new-boy
a rest after deciding his whirlwind start to the season was catching up on
him. But the 20-year-old forced Bruce into a rethink after showing a
tremendous appetite for work in training - and he rewarded his manager by
smashing home only his third goal for the club and his first since last
December. That means Avram Grant's Hammers are still looking for a first
away win in 16 months - and unless they find a way to halt that horror run
they are going down. But Grant insisted: "We have a squad which is good
enough to stay up as we showed by winning the last two games against Wigan
and Manchester United - and even before that. "The difference between us and
15th is only five or six points and that's what we're looking at. It's a gap
we can close if we continue to play like we did in this game. "It's fair to
say we need to improve our away record and I'm sure we will. The gap is not
so big, it was one goal today. "When it is one goal it means we can turn it
round and we will. If you've seen our away games we've played well in 60 to
70 per cent of them. The possession has been good.

"Every game we play away we analyse the team we're playing and I'm sure
we'll not stay without an away win for much longer. "We've been good at home
in the last two games. We played really well and we wanted to continue with
that. "But we played against a team with an amazing home record. It was not
an easy game for us. It's very disappointing. "The boys showed great spirit,
good quality and organisation but Sunderland took their chance well.
"The lack of attempts on goal was the main disappointment. We didn't start
the game well. There was a lot of energy and possession but not many
chances. "In the second half we were better but not so much in front of
goal."

While Grant was fretting about his side's poor finishing, Bruce was purring
about Henderson's first-half strike which he felt was worthy of winning any
game. Bruce said: "Jordan's a wonderful young talent. Arguably his best
position could be in a wide area because of his delivery. We all know he has
a goal in him, it was a matter of getting it. Hopefully there is a lot more
to come from the young man and that will do his confidence no end of good.
"The biggest challenge for me is managing Jordan. He's played for 18 months
solidly. Of course you are always monitoring him but I thought there was an
edge to him in training this week. "Maybe he got a sniff I wanted to give
him a rest and he didn't want that. He showed that today - I thought he was
excellent.
"We look a threat going forward and we've got goals in us. "We looked
dangerous today but we didn't convert as many as we should have done. I
think West Ham have too many good players to stay where they are - but
nothing surprises you in this league."

Sunderland 1-0 West Ham: Daily Mirror match report
Published 22:00 05/12/10 By Simon Bird
The Mirror

So much for a West Ham revival. So much for the Save our Season victories of
the previous week heralding a fresh start for Avram Grant. Instead it was
back to the bottom of the Premier League, and a return to stubborn inability
to get an away win that is threatening to drag the Hammers into the
Championship. The fleeting return to form that heralded wins against Wigan
and Manchester United, including seven goals, in the previous eight days,
proved as reliable as a promise from a FIFA World Cup voting executive.
Grant's men have not won on their travels since the opening day of LAST
season, and as he conceded last night, that is unsustainable if they want to
avoid relegation. It wasn't a case of Grant's side being abject. They just
couldn't turn possession or Scott Parker's usual perpetual motion heroics
into a goal. How long Grant will get to turn it around is debatable. If they
play reasonably well in the context of this scrappy, poor game, and come out
losers, that will surely extinguish any confidence recently garnered? Steve
Bruce though can be reassured that although Sunderland were far from totally
convincing, they were resilient enough to hang on to the lead provided by
Jordan Henderson in the first half, with his first goal of the season. The
win lifted the Wearsiders to seventh and if they can maintain that until the
end of the season it will count as a success. Boss Grant admitted: "We do
not speak about the away record. We just prepare for away games and look at
how to win. I am sure we will do that this season. It is good that we have
won two at home and we need to keep that record up. We need to keep doing
that and pick up points away."

Insisting they are not adrift at the bottom he added: "We are looking at the
difference between us and say, 15th, it is six points, and just three points
behind 17th place. That is what we look at. It is not too far a gap. We can
close it if we continue to play like that. "I was happy with the spirit. We
didn't play well first half. Sunderland only had one chance and scored.
Second half it was better but we needed to score so it is disappointing.
"The difference from winning away and losing is not much. We cannot stay in
this league without winning away from home. We need to improve it. I am sure
we can do it. You see out away games and 60-70pc we play well in and we
don't deserve to lose."

Henderson has been asked to add goals to progress his Sunderland and England
career. He has been less than prolific during his 45 starts and 10
substitute appearances for his club. But the 20-year-old's finish yesterday
in the 33rd minute was perfection. Defender Nedum Onuoha opened up play by
chipping a fine ball down the right for Asamoah Gyan that provoked offside
protests from the Hammers' defence. However Matthew Upson was playing the
striker onside and he cut back expertly into Henderson's path and he used
his left foot to glance powerfully past Robert Green. It was almost a year
since his last and only Premier League goal when he notched against
Manchester City in December last season. The youngster also scored in the
Carling Cup against Birmingham last season, and is now hungry for more. The
first half hour was a scrappy affair with Bruce rocketing Gyan just before
he set up the goal demanding better movement. Gyan certainly responded,
notably with a chip from 25 yards that left Green flat footed but bounced
off the top of the bar. The best Sunderland created before that was a
wayward shot from Kieron Richardson after neat set up work by Gyan and Danny
Welbeck down the left. Skipper Lee Cattermole had a drive blocked by the
head of James Tomkins and another shot wide. As usual Scott Parker was the
liveliest Hammers player, running play with energy and commitment, but it
was Jonathan Spector who came closest. The USA midfielder, fresh from his
double against Manchester United, took two men out with a drag back turn,
then surged past three players to shoot wide. After the break Carlton Cole
came close when Gyan was dispossessed allowing Victor Obinna to set up his
partner's shot wide. There was a feisty edge to play, with Luis Boa Morte
lucky only to be booked for a two footed tackle on Richardson and Cattermole
also booked for his crunching retaliation tackle on the winger. Avram Grant
changed his cup heroes and brought in Danny Gabbidon, Kieron Dyer and Parker
at the expense of Julien Faubert, Pablo Barrera and Radoslav Kovac. While
Bruce rested Bolo Zenden with Gyan preferred.

West Ham mounted a fight back in the second half, with Bruce's men off the
pace and looking nervous holding on to a lead. Darren Bent was substituted
with 15 minutes left, and looked surprised to be hauled off as Bruce tweaked
his system to shore up the points. But shortly after Scott Parker won the
ball on the edge of the box and played Cole clear on the right. His blasted
cross evaded Spector's attempted volley allowing Piquionne to gather the
loose ball and fire against the post. Then Danny Welbeck should have sealed
the game without the last ten minutes form fretful. Gyan broke and played a
ball in behind the defence for Richardson to challenge for with Green diving
at his feet. The Engalnd keeper spilled the ball gifting Welbeck a free shot
at goal, but Tomkins got in an unlikely block.

Avram Can't cure West Ham's travel sickness
By MICHAEL WALKER
Last updated at 12:23 AM on 6th December 2010
Daily Mail

How long this remains the case - the manor, not the nickname - is now back
on the agenda because yet another pointless Hammers away day took the club
back to the pressurised foot of the Barclays Premier League table. There
are only so many times West Ham can stage 'Save Our Season' Saturdays but
there is another coming this weekend when Manchester City bring their swag
to the East End. At least it is a home game, because while the claret and
blue sceptics may doubt Grant, it is not his fault that West Ham have now
not won away from home in the league since the opening day of last season.
Gianfranco Zola (remember him?) played a part in that record, as of course
did the squad. As far as winning away goes, it's: West Ham Can't - 26
Premier League away games have disappeared since Wolves were beaten away and
while last season that was not bad enough to take West Ham down, it is
unlikely to suffice in this extra-competitive division.

As Grant knows all too well, Portsmouth, with their points and finances,
made for an exceptional table. The other two teams relegated were Hull and
Burnley, both on 30 points. West Ham finished fourth-bottom. The club were
relieved at that, and so was Zola. This season, with the three promoted
clubs over-achieving so far - in terms of our expectations - the revised
opinion is that survival may require a 2007-type points tally when Sheffield
United won 10 games and still went down on 38 points. Goal difference cut
the Blades then - as did West Ham, Carlos Tevez and all that - and it was
the Hammers' goal difference that dropped them below Wolves to the bottom
yesterday. The defeat leaves West Ham on 12 points. They remain only three
off 'safety' and there can be such a thing in December, as Grant confirmed.

'We are looking now, between us and 15th place it's only five points and
this is what we're looking at,' he said. 'The gap is not too far. It is a
gap that we can close. We don't speak about the record, a statistic is a
statistic. I'm sure that we will win away this season. In the last 12 games
we have lost three and if we continue like this all season then we will stay
in the Premier League.' When asked if there was consolation in not being
adrift, Grant asked: 'What is adrift?' An alleged comedian said he should
look outside at the snow. No, West Ham are not adrift. But the
uncomfortable reality is that with 16 games gone the Hammers may be as many
as 26 points off avoiding relegation next May.

The way the fixtures fall can seem cruel and this was the first of three in
four league games away from Upton Park. Unpromisingly, a trip to Blackburn
awaits followed by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Boxing Day. It can seem
premature to ponder these things three weeks before Christmas, but it isn't
too early in the Upton Park boardroom. There they have already been making
such bleak calculations, which presumably is why Wally Downes was stalking
the visitors' technical area. Intense, verbose and demonstrative, Downes
was what Grant appeared not to be. As Downes urged and cajoled, Grant had
that man-of-constant-sorrow demeanour we know him by. One is not necessarily
superior to the other and for their sake it is to be hoped opposites attract
and they can find some anti-chemistry that works. In the second half they
spoke to each other on occasion. 'You can see Wally Downes's influence on
the team straightaway,' commented Steve Bruce. 'Two banks of four, they were
very rigid.' Bruce shared Grant's optimism about that state of the table,
too.
'They have an England goalkeeper, an England centre half, an England
midfielder and an England centre forward,' Bruce said. 'But I've never known
a league quite like it. Put back-to-back wins together and you can be
mid-table. It's that tight. West Ham have too many good players, but then
nothing surprises me.'

Those good players were close to earning a morale-boosting point at a ground
where Arsenal, Manchester United and City have failed to win this season.
Revolving once again around the unlimited Scott Parker, West Ham showed a
good deal more cohesion and desire than Chelsea, for example, did at
Newcastle the previous Sunday. Grant saluted 'the spirit of the boys' and
there seemed enough to build on. Bruce is right, the tightness of the table
means that we tip from toe to toe as each weekend's results come in. We may
do so the whole way to May, but West Ham surely need to stumble to an away
victory soon if Avram Grant is going to be around then, if Avram Can't is to
earn the time to change that to Avram Can or, even better, Avram Did.

Bruce's tactical switch pays dividends with Henderson strike
Sunderland 1 West Ham United 0
Independent.co.uk
By Simon Turnbull at the Stadium of Light
Monday, 6 December 2010

It remains to be seen whether West Ham United can truly save their season.
Perhaps the next attraction at the Stadium of Light could enlighten Avram
Grant and his side. There happens to be "An Evening of Clairvoyance" in the
Banqueting Suite at Sunderland's home ground tonight, hosted by one Steve
Holbrook, author of such works as "Light in the Darkness" and "Survival".

Having glimpsed a couple of chinks of light on home ground, with victories
in their "Save Our Season" contest against Wigan and in their Carling Cup
quarter-final against Manchester United, the Hammers suffered another one of
their dark days on the road yesterday. The East Enders have not won away in
the Premier League since their visit to Wolves on the opening day of last
season and their barren run stretched to a 26th match after Jordan
Henderson's 34th minute goal consigned them to defeat on Wearside.

The Hammers did win 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in the third round of the
Carling Cup in September, but after their 4-0 midweek demolition of
Manchester United in the same competition they could not summon the
attacking clout to end Sunderland's unbeaten home league record - nor to
salvage a point for their top-flight survival mission.

"We need to pick up points away from home," Grant lamented, after a result
that took his team back to the bottom of the Premier League pile. "We have
to do something about it, because we can't stay without a win away from
home."

Sunderland started with Asamoah Gyan and Darren Bent up front, the first
time Steve Bruce had deployed his chief goal scorers from the off in a
Premier League fixture. It meant a switch out to the left flank for Danny
Welbeck and in the opening quarter the Wearsiders missed the livewire
central attacking influence of the in-form Manchester United loanee.

In the first 30 minutes, Bruce's side only managed to fashion a couple of
half chances, long range efforts from Lee Cattermole and Bent, both
comfortably saved by Robert Green. It was only when the Sunderland manager
switched Gyan and Welbeck that the contest sparked to life.

Bruce had to venture to the apron of the pitch and bark at Gyan to "get
wide" before the Ghanaian shifted - initially to the left. Within a couple
of minutes, though, the move paid dividends. Roving out to the right, Gyan
sprung West Ham's offside trap, latching on to a ball up the line from Nedum
Onuoha and cutting a low pass into the middle for Henderson to beat Green
with a first-time left-footed shot.

It was the midfielder's first goal for a year and it was very nearly
followed by a second for Sunderland, Gyan clipping the top of the crossbar
with a shot from the left edge of the penalty area. At that stage, West Ham
had yet to pose a threat to Craig Gordon in the home goal, but might have
been level a minute before the interval.

Jonathan Spector - retained in central midfield following his two-goal
contribution against Manchester United - dribbled his way through to the
left edge of the Sunderland penalty area but then scuffed his shot wide of
the target. It was a close call for the Black Cats and there was another
four minutes into the second-half, Carlton Cole dragging a shot across the
face of the home goal.

Sunderland had their moments in the second period but the big question
always was whether the Hammers could find an equaliser. After substitute
Freddie Piquionne drove a low shot on to the outside of the left post, the
answer was: no.
