Cole gets England call
WHUFC.com
Carlton Cole has been re-called to the England squad for Wednesday's
international friendly with Hungary
07.08.2010

In-form West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has been called into Fabio
Capello's new-look England squad to face Hungary at Wembley on Wednesday.
Cole has been in superb shape in pre-season, scoring against Peterborough
United, VfL Borussia Monchengladbach, MK Dons and Ipswich Town and leading
the line in Saturday's SBOBET Cup victory over RC Deportivo La Coruna on
Saturday afternoon. The 26-year-old will be hoping to notch his first goal
for his country at senior level on what would be his eighth appearance for
England. Cole joins Herita Ilunga (DR Congo), Jonathan Spector (United
States), Thomas Hitzlsperger (Germany), Valon Behrami (Switzerland), Tal Ben
Haim (Israel) and Pablo Barrera (Mexico) in senior squad call-ups for
friendlies next week. Among those on Under-21 duty are Marek Stech, Holmar
Eyjolfsson and Fabio Daprela.

Spot-on Barrera secures SBOBET Cup

West Ham United v RC Deportivo La Coruna
SBOBET Cup
Boleyn Ground
Saturday 7 August 2010
Kick-off: 3pm
Referee: Kevin Friend

West Ham United 0-0 RC Deportivo La Coruna
(West Ham United win 5-3 on penalties)

West Ham United won the inaugural SBOBET Cup following a thrilling penalty
shootout at the Boleyn Ground. New signing Pablo Barrera netted the winning
spot-kick after a goalless 90 minutes in east London, while Robert Green was
the other hero, saving from former Spain international midfielder Juan
Carlos Valeron. So, new manager Avram Grant wins a bit of silverware in his
first game in charge! Deportivo will feel a bit aggrieved, having created
the better chances during normal time, the most notable when forward Lassad
drilled a long-range shot against Green's upright. That matters not,
however, as West Ham have finished the pre-season unbeaten in seven matches.
The new signings have bedded in well, with Barrera catching the eye
following his introduction this afternoon. The Hammers return to action in
the Barclays Premier League a week today at Aston Villa before hosting
Bolton Wanderers here on 21 August. The Bolton match has been designated as
Kids for a Quid, so there is no excuse for not bringing the children down
for what promises to be an exciting afternoon at the Boleyn Ground. Be sure
to keep a close eye on whufc.com later for exclusive post-match reaction.

Penalty shootout
West Ham United 5-3 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Barrera scores! The Mexican
sends his shot past Manu and is congratulated by his jubilant teammates.
Barrera to win it...
West Ham United 4-3 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Diego Colotto curls the ball
into the top left-hand corner as Green goes the other way.
Colotto must score...
West Ham United 4-2 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Julien Faubert sends Manu the
wrong way, screwing the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
West Ham United 3-2 RC Deportivo La Coruna - The veteran tries to outwit
Green by taking a stuttering run-up, but the England stopper dives to his
right to parry the ball aside.
West Ham United 3-2 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Piquionne finds the net for the
first time in a West Ham shirt, side-footing the ball inside the post and
just out of the reach of Manu.
West Ham United 2-2 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Rochela is very composed as he
tucks the ball inside the right-hand post.
West Ham United 2-1 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Cole sends Manu the wrong way,
tucking his penalty high inside the left-hand post.
West Ham United 1-1 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Ze Castro smashes a superb
penalty high to Green's left.
West Ham United 1-0 RC Deportivo La Coruna - Noble scores, driving low to
Manu's right.
The two sets of players are just grabbing a quick drink before captains Ze
Castro and Upson get some instructions from the referee. The kicks will be
taken in front of the Bobby Moore Stand. Mark Noble is going to take the
first spot-kick...

Final score - West Ham United 0-0 RC Deportivo La Coruna

91 mins - Noble takes the second corner and Tomkins gets his head to the
ball and nods it towards Cole. Manu does well again though and punches
clear. We're going to have a penalty shootout for the SBOBET Cup. I'm not
sure Piquionne and Colotto understand what's going on as they're swapping
shirts.
90 mins - We've got 60 seconds left on the clock or we're going to
penalties. You'll need no reminding that West Ham's last penalty shootout
took place following the 2006 FA Cup final. We might not need penalties
though as West Ham have a very late corner. Barrera to take it... The ball
is headed clear to Tomkins, who feeds Noble. The midfielder shoots low and
Manu dives full-length to push his effort around the post.
88 mins - Big chance for Deportivo. Laure gets forward well again and
crosses over the head of Tomkins for Riki, who heads over from eight yards.
Manuel Pablo gets a late run out in place of Laure. Maybe the veteran is a
penalty specialist!
87 mins - Noble lobs the ball to the edge of the box where Cole holds off
his marker and flicks it towards Piquionne. The new boy tries to divert it
into the far corner, but the ball rolls wide. It wouldn't have counted
anyway, as Piquionne was offside.
86 mins - Grant is out to the edge of his technical area, as is Deportivo
boss Lotina. Neither of the managers will really want penalties.
84 mins - The Mexican clearly doesn't like being shown up on his own patch,
picking up the ball and letting fly from the corner of the penalty area. The
ball flies just past the angle of post and crossbar.
83 mins - Barrera loses possesion midway inside the Deportivo half and the
Spaniards break through Alvarez, who fizzes a dipping shot a yard over the
top from 25 yards.
81 mins - Noble and Parker combine before the latter tries to find Piquionne
through the middle. The striker tries to flick the ball into his own path,
as the pass is slightly behind him, but it ricochets through to Manu.
79 mins - The attendance has been officially announced as 14,295. Perhaps a
few people have gone home since we were told earlier...!?
75 mins - Hitzlsperger is replaced by Luis Boa Morte. The German has had a
neat and tidy game on his home debut. Boa Morte gets a loud cheer as he
enters the fray. Barrera comes to the right flank and Boa Morte goes wide
left. Piquionne goes up front with Cole in what looks like a 4-4-2
formation. The Sir Trevor Brooking Stand lower sing "Avram, give us a wave"
and the manager responds, much to their approval.
73 mins - Two more changes from Deportivo. Riki and Juan Carlos Valeron are
on for Dioni and Rodriguez.
70 mins - We're getting towards the closing stages of the game and not a
huge amount is happening out there. Barrera has his first run at the
Deportivo defence before crossing left-footed towards Piquionne and Cole,
but Ze Castro is in the right place to head clear. Faubert picks up the
loose ball and beats one defender before crossing low, only for Cole to
slide in and foul his marker.
67 mins - I might have been a bit unfair on the Deportivo fans earlier.
Their numbers have swelled since I looked over before kick-off. There must
be about 100 of them in the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand.
64 mins - Piquionne is on the right of the front three, with Barrera on the
left. The Frenchman's first touch is a superb one and his run is only
stopped by a rather cynical ankle-tap by Juan Rodriguez.
63 mins - Gabbidon is replaced by Barrera, while Piquionne is on for
Diamanti.
62 mins - Deportivo have a free-kick wide on the right. The ball is curled
into the six-yard box and Green punches powerfully clear. We're going to see
Barrera and Piquionne in a few moments. The new boys get a nice ovation as
they make their way to the touchline.
60 mins - The crowd is announced as 14,507. Guardado is replaced by Saul,
which will be of a relief to Tomkins. Dominguez comes on for Lassad.
57 mins - Laure gets to the byline before looking up and clipping a cross
towards the penalty spot. Dioni twists and sends a looping header goalwards,
but that is an easy catch for Green. Deportivo are going to make some
changes in a short while.
56 mins - Diamanti drills a superb pass over the head of Rochela into the
path of Faubert. The Frenchman takes the ball in his stride superbly before
crossing towards Cole. Manu anticipates well and clutches the ball in front
of his face. Good play, though.
51 mins - Noble tries to thread a neat ball between Laure and Colotto
towards Ilunga. Laure gets a foot in and the ball bounces off the DR Congo
defender and it goes behind.
50 mins - Rochela concedes a corner. Diamanti's initial effort is cleared by
a defender. The Italian regains possession and crosses to the back post,
where Cole heads back across the face of goal towards Upson. Ze Castro heads
clear.
48 mins - Deportivo come close again. Alvarez gets in behind Upson and stabs
the ball across the six-yard box. Thankfully Dioni does not anticipate the
cross and Tomkins clears at the far post.
46 mins - Deportivo get us back underway through Dioni and Lassad. Guardado
threatens, but Tomkins gets in a toe and Ilunga heads clear.
Here come the two teams again. West Ham are out first. Diamanti and Diego
Seoane exchange a warm embrace. Let me try to find out why...

Half-time score - West Ham United 0-0 RC Deportivo La Coruna

46 mins - Referee Friend brings the first half to a close just a second over
the 45 minutes. Deportivo were the better of the two teams there and will
consider themselves unfortunate not to be ahead. Lassad came closest,
sending his rasping drive against the face of the upright. At the other end,
West Ham have not worked Manu often enough. Manager Grant will want to see
more cohesion from his side after the break.
44 mins - Tomkins does well, tracking Guardado before blocking the winger's
cross behind for a corner. The Mexican takes the flag-kick himself and
Rodriguez wins the header. It is on target, but too close to Green, who
catches diving to his left.
42 mins - Faubert does well before lofting a delicious ball over Ze Castro
into the path of Cole. The striker miscontrols and the ball squirts far
enough away for Manu to scramble out of his box and clear.
41 mins - Alvarez puts over another good cross from the right and Guardado
attacks the ball and wins it above Tomkins. The ball flies over the top.
Another warning for the Hammers.
39 mins - A period of nice one-touch stuff involving Hitzlsperger and Ilunga
ends with Noble trying to play in Parker, but Colotto is there again to
block the attempted through-ball.
37 mins - Deportivo threaten. Guardado is at the hub of the move again - he
really is a good player. The ball is worked wide right to Pablo Alvarez,
whose cross is headed clear by Upson at the near post.
34 mins - It's now chucking it down. I should be a weatherman! On a serious
note, the surface will be even slicker. Cole is fouled by Colotto deep
inside the Deportivo half. West Ham keep up the pressure and Parker drives
forward with typical gusto before unleashing a swerving effort that dips
just past the far post. Manu was diving full-length for that one.
33 mins - The floodlights are being turned on as Faubert wins a corner down
the right. Noble floats the ball across, but Cole can't direct his header
goalwards.
31 mins - While the football has brightened up, the weather has done the
opposite. It looks like we could be in for a bit of rain here.
29 mins - It's certainly livened up a bit here! West Ham win a free-kick
wide on the left. Diamanti curls the ball over and Manu shows good handling
to grab the ball inches off the ground.
28 mins - Lassad turns provider this time, curling over a cross that a
diving Dioni gets his head to. Thankfully Tomkins had tracked the forward's
run and is able to divert the ball out for another corner. Guardado crosses
and Green punches clear before Parker smashes the ball upfield.
27 mins - Oooooooooooh! That was close. Lassad runs forward from the halfway
line before thumping a rising drive off the post. The ball hits Green on the
back and flies wide for a corner. Upson wins the header and West Ham clear
through Faubert.
26 mins - Hitzlsperger has settled into life at the Boleyn Ground very
nicely. He looks very composed in possession and never panics, even in the
tightest of spots.
22 mins - Laure gets forward down the right and wins a corner off Ilunga.
Guardado to take... The Mexican curls the ball in left-footed and Upson
heads clear. Deportivo pick up possession again and feed Guardado. This time
he crosses right-footed and Lassad should do better with his header.
Instead, the ball flies harmlessly over the top.
20 mins - Hitzlsperger turns nicely before finding Parker. The midfielder
romps forward before spreading play left to Diamanti, who instantly plays
the ball to Ilunga. The DR Congo man wins a corner, but it comes to nothing.
18 mins - Diamanti and Faubert have switched wings. Da Costa and Boa Morte
head out for a jog and are quickly joined by Frederic Piquionne.
17 mins - Hitzlsperger gets a cheer from the crowd as he nutmegs Guardado
and tries to find Cole. Unfortunately, the striker is outmuscled by
centre-back Ze Castro and the chance is lost. Good play by the German,
though.
16 mins - Dioni outjumps Upson and heads the ball down to captain Juan
Rodriguez. The midfielder takes a touch and shoots from 30 yards, but his
effort slices high and wide of the left-hand post.
15 mins - A short break in play allows Grant to get some instructions to
Diamanti. Meanwhile, Daprela, Kovac and Stanislas are sent out for a jog
along the touchline.
13 mins - West Ham are knocking the ball around nicely enough, but they're
not hurting Deportivo just yet. A route-one pass from Noble tries to pick
out Cole's run, but goalkeeper Manu is out smartly to grab the ball on the
edge of his penalty area.
10 mins - Faubert does well to cut inside and stab the ball out left to
Diamanti. The Italian cuts inside his marker with a drop of the shoulder
before shooting powerfully. The shot is going nowhere near the goal, but it
thuds into the chest of defender Colotto, who needs treatment.
9 mins - Cole turns well and runs at the Deportivo defence before trying to
play in Faubert. The ball takes a nick off a defender and goes behind for a
corner. Diamanti takes the kick, but it is short to the near post and headed
clear.
7 mins - Good stuff. Guardado's low shot takes a slight deflection and Green
plunges to his right to palm the ball aside and Tomkins completes the
clearance.
6 mins - West Ham concede a free-kick in a dangerous position 25 yards out.
Guardado looks like he's going to take this one with his left foot. Robert
Green sets up his wall...
3 mins - Deportivo come forward down the right and win a throw, but the
danger is quickly snuffed out by Diamanti. Deportivo look very comfortable
in possession, as you would expect from a Spanish side. Laure overlaps down
the right, but his cross is low and poor, allowing Noble to clear with ease.
1 min - West Ham kick-off and go on the attack from the start. Diamanti is
playing down the left of the front three, with Faubert on the right in his
new attacking position.

3.04pm - We're nearly ready to go. Avram Grant is introduced to the crowd
and the new manager rises from his seat in the dugout to applaud the
supporters.
3.01pm - Bill Mummery and Boy Wong present a massive cheque for £10,000 to
the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK. The two captains are called
forward to go through the pre-match coin toss with referee Kevin Friend.
2.58pm - The strains of 'Bubbles' reverberate around the east London sky and
that can mean only one thing... Here come the two teams, led by captains
Matthew Upson and Juan Rodriguez. The two sets of players line up to be
introduced to West Ham United Chairman David Gold and Bill Mummery and Boy
Wong from SBOBET.
2.55pm - The pitch is now empty, bar a couple of groundstaff walking round
with forks to iron out the divots. The playing surface looks in immaculate
condition and should be conducive to an entertaining game of passing,
attacking football. I wouldn't like to estimate the crowd inside the Boleyn
Ground this afternoon, but there are a fair few thousand here. Looking to my
left, the away end is not exactly what you'd call busy. I reckon the
Galicians have brought about 30 fans with them...
2.50pm - The players are making their way down the tunnel. Scott Parker
stops to sign a few autographs. The crowd of young fans is huge. If the
Hammer of the Year signs them all, he won't make kick-off!
2.47pm - PA announcer Jeremy Nicholas is running through the two teams. He
also tells the crowd that this is his 13th season as the club's matchday PA
man. Let's hope that doesn't mean we're in for an unlucky season. Both sets
of players are still going through their pre-match warm-ups on the pitch.
It's a muggy afternoon, so it's going to be a tiring 90 minutes for the two
teams. Deportivo are contesting their third straight match against British
opposition, having taken on Cardiff City and Newcastle United in the last
seven days.
2.40pm - Officials from the club's Principal Partners SBOBET are being
introduced to the crowd. SBOBET have made a donation of £10,000 to the Bobby
Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK and have been a consistent supporter of
the club's Academy. On the pitch, the players are enjoying a small-sided
game, with Pablo Barrera donning the white bib that means he can play for
both teams.
2.30pm - It's a bright day here in east London as West Ham United prepare to
make their first home appearance of the 2010/11 season. It's already been a
productive day for the club, with both the reserve and youth teams scoring
victories. Alex Dyer's reserves drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town, with Tal Ben
Haim making his first appearance for the club, while Tony Carr's youngsters
defeated Leyton Orient.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Boleyn Ground for the first SBOBET Cup in
aid of the West Ham United Academy. Today's visit of Spanish giants RC
Deportivo La Coruna marks manager Avram Grant's first game in charge at the
home of the Hammers. New signing Thomas Hitzlsperger makes his full home
debut, while Pablo Barrera and Frederic Piquionne are all in line for their
Boleyn Ground bows from the substitutes bench. Fellow new boys Tal Ben Haim
and Winston Reid only linked up with the club this week and neither will be
involved this afternoon. Ben Haim, along with Valon Behrami, Jordan Spence
and Frank Nouble, played in a reserve-team fixture earlier today against
Ipswich Town. The only other players definitely missing this afternoon are
long-term injury absentees Jack Collison and Zavon Hines, both of whom are
recovering well following knee surgery. Deportivo also have a host of new
signings on show, many of whom featured in the club's pre-season friendly
meeting with Barclays Premier League Newcastle United in Spain.

Ben Haim and Behrami play

Two of Avram Grant's first-team squad got some valuable playing time under
their belts on Saturday morning
07.08.2010

Tal Ben Haim and Valon Behrami both had 45-minute run-outs for a West Ham
United XI against Ipswich Town on Saturday. Israel defender Ben Haim was
playing his first football for the club since joining from Portsmouth
earlier in the week. Behrami had not figured at all this summer since
returning from the FIFA World Cup after lingering fitness issues, although
he had been training. The match saw Ipswich take the lead before substitute
Robert Hall struck a late equaliser - his first at reserve-team level - to
earn a 1-1 draw. Frank Nouble also got a welcome hour under his belt. That
was his first club action since heading back from England Under-17 duty,
while Alex Dyer also had the likes of Jordan Spence, Anthony Edgar and
Cristian Montano in his lineup. Loanee Matthew Fry, meanwhile, was an unused
substitute for Charlton Athletic in their 1-0 home win against AFC
Bournemouth as they kick-started their League One campaign in fine style.

Winston starts work

Winston Reid enjoyed his first West Ham United training session at the
Boleyn Ground on Saturday
07.08.2010

Winston Reid began life as a West Ham United player by enjoying a special
individual training session on Saturday morning. The New Zealand FIFA World
Cup star, who joined the Hammers from Danish club FC Midtjylland on
Thursday, was put through his paces at the Boleyn Ground by fitness coach
Eamon Swift.
Having watched the first-team squad train at the stadium on Friday, Reid
went through a series of exercises on the edge of the pitch under Swift's
careful direction. The 22-year-old will not be involved in Saturday's SBOBET
Cup in aid of the Academy meeting with Spanish club RC Deportivo La Coruna,
but will hope to prove his fitness in time to be considered for the Barclays
Premier League opener at Aston Villa on 14 August. Meanwhile, Reid's
decision to join West Ham has been welcomed in his homeland. New Zealand
assistant coach Brian Turner said Reid could emulate the achievements of All
Whites centre-back and captain Ryan Nelsen, who has excelled since joining
Blackburn Rovers in January 2005. "Winston is worth every penny they have
paid," Turner told the New Zealand Herald newspaper. "He is going to be a
very good footballer. He is fully capable of playing at that level. He can
become the next Ryan Nelsen of New Zealand football."

New Zealand Football chairman Frank van Hattum also backed Reid to make a
name for himself in a claret and blue shirt. "It is great news," said van
Hattum. "But now we have to hope he gets to play and gets decent game time.
Winston is such a great athlete he deserves a chance like this." Reid will
be the sixth New Zealander to play in the Premier League, following in the
footsteps of Nelsen, West Bromwich Albion midfielder Chris Wood, former
Ipswich Town midfielder Lee Norfolk, ex-Leeds United defender Danny Hay and
former Fulham midfielder Simon Elliott.

Cole in England squad

Carlton Cole has been recalled to the England squad. The United striker -
who was overlooked for the summer's World Cup finals - is back in Fabio
Capello's selection for the forthcoming friendly against Hungary. However
West Ham's two World Cup squad members - Rob Green and Matthew Upson - have
been omitted from the squad; Scott Parker, who many felt should have been in
South Africa is again ignored by the under-fire Italian boss. An
experimental squad sees Green and fellow 'keeper David James replaced by Ben
Foster and Paul Robinson - both previously dropped for making huge clangers
- whilst Gary Cahill of Bolton replaces Upson. Former Hammer Bobby Zamora -
rapidly approaching 30 - is however the biggest surprise inclusion of all.

West Ham's final game of pre-season went to penalties in front of a
disappointing crowd at the Boleyn this afternoon. Just 14,295 turned up for
the SBOBET Cup game with the La Liga side, on the day Stephanie Moore
revealed her disappointment at the club's decision to rename the game
recently reserved for the Bobby Moore Cup in memory of her late husband. The
Hammers - who began the game with just one of the summer signings, Thomas
Hitzlsperger, in the starting XI - took the trophy thanks to Rob Green's
penalty shootout following a disappointing affair. Chances were at a
premium throughout the game but the Spanish went closest to opening the
scoring on the half-hour mark when Lassad was allowed to waltz through
United's rearguard and pick his spot - a fierce effort that cannoned off the
post. Avram Grant's side had to wait until the final minute of normal time
before testing La Coruna 'keeper Manu who diverted a Mark Noble effort to
safety. Despite the lack of threat in front of goal, positives will be taken
from another clean sheet against European opposition plus the match-winning
penalty save from Rob Green, already making a mockery of those who
questioned his ability during the summer.

Diamanti a happy Hammer
Italian striker rules out a move back to Serie A
By Simone Bargellini Last updated: 7th August 2010
SSN

West Ham striker Alessandro Diamanti had rubbished reports that he is set
for a return to Italy admitting that he will 'almost certainly' be staying
at Upton Park this coming season. Diamanti's agent Lorenzo Marronaro has
talked up a potential move back to Serie A for the 27-year-old with
Fiorentina reportedly targeting the forward who scored seven times for the
Hammers last term. The former Livorno man insists that he is happy with life
in London despite missing Italian football. "Almost certainly I will stay at
West Ham, even if my agents are evaluating the various offers," Diamanti
told Sky Italia. "During the market there are many names and rumours, but I
feel good here in London. "In England you can breathe a different climate,
especially in the stadiums. Its very different to Italy. "I miss the Italian
league, but I would like to stay here because I feel good."
The striker's agent Marronaro was less certain over his client's future, but
has denied any interest from Fiorentina for Diamanti telling Lady Radio: "I
won't rule out a return to Italy for Alessandro. "Any interest from
Fiorentina are only rumours because I don't know anything about that. "All
is still for now but I can't exclude anything until the end of the transfer
window."

PABLO BARRERA was the penalty star as his effort handed Avram Grant his
first silverware as West Ham boss. Mexican new-boy Barrera netted the
winning spot-kick as the Hammers beat Deportivo La Coruna 5-3 in a shoot-out
to land the inaugural SBOBET Cup. The Spaniards had the better of the
chances at Upton Park but failed to beat Robert Green. The under-fire
England keeper saved Juan Carlos Valeron's penalty in the shoot-out before
Barrera took centre stage. This was West Ham's seventh game unbeaten in
pre-season and they head into next Saturday's Premier League opener at Aston
Villa in strong form.

DIAMANTI: Parma keen to sign him
07/08/2010

PARMA are poised to make a move for West Ham forward Alessandro Diamanti.
West Ham are determined to ease their wage bill and Diamanti, 27, is
believed to be one of the players they are willing to sell before the new
season gets underway. The Italian striker started 18 league games for the
club last season, but with the arrival of Frederic Piquionne from Lyon and
Avram Grant hoping to finalise a £13m deal for Nice striker Loic Remy,
Diamanti's days at Upton Park look numbered Olympiakos have also been
monitoring his progress, but reports in Italy suggest that Diamanti is keen
on making a return to Serie A. Parma have been looking to sign Juventus
striker Sebastian Giovinco, but will turn their attentions to Diamanti if
the deal fails to materialise. Parma Sporting Director Pietro Leonardi said:
"If Giovinco doesn't arrive, then the alternatives are Hatem Ben Arfa and
Diamanti. "We need to make transfers that will ensure players can grow with
us for a certain period of time."

West Ham 0-0 Deportivo: Sunday Mirror match report
Published 23:00 07/08/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Avram Grant celebrated his first penalty shoot-out victory since Chelsea's
Champions League Final defeat against Manchester United and vowed to win
more silverware for West Ham this season. The Hammers' boss has been plagued
by Chelsea's agonising defeat in Moscow back in 2008 when John Terry missed
the vital spot-kick and United went on to win the coveted trophy. But Grant
was thrilled to see his new side maintain their unbeaten pre-season run with
a penalty shoot-out win and go into the new season brimming with confidence.
Grant is still hoping to bring in more new signings before the end of August
and still feels he can make the team even stronger. Grant said: "I hope
there is more silverware to come. At least I managed to win something on
penalties! That is my first penalty shoot-out win for a long time. "There
were a lot of positives to take from the game but also things we need to
improve on. We need to play faster, but today we were not facing typical
English opposition. "I am really pleased with our pre-season and feel we are
improving all the time. The players are in a better condition so it is good.
"I always want things to get better and there is time before the transfer
window closes. We don't have enough players in the squad to make our team
more competitive. "We will try to bring in players who will make our team
stronger. I hope that will happen but I cannot guarantee this."
Grant is determined to keep his star players, such as Scott Parker and
Carlton Cole, at Upton Park. Stoke have been strongly linked with a move for
Cole and are reported to be making a £12m move for his signature. But Grant
believes other clubs should follow the example of West Ham and not always
make their transfer dealings in public. Grant added: "We don't want to sell
him. I understand that other teams bid for our players but we are doing
things differently when we want players from other teams. "We have a few
good players who can play in any other team. We are doing things the right
way. Otherwise it would be a jungle."

West Ham made it six wins out of seven pre-season games and keeper Robert
Green proved the hero as his crucial penalty save helped the Hammers come
away with a win. Despite his major blunder in the World Cup, Green showed he
is trying to get his career back on track and made a fantastic save to deny
Depo legend Juan Carlos Valeron. The Hammers scored all five penalties with
new signing Pablo Barrera netting the winner. Grant has nothing but praise
for the way Green has bounced back from his ordeal and has no doubts he can
become the best keeper for England again. "It is good that he kept another
clean sheet. He has played many games and is doing his job. He is a very
good keeper and professional."

New signings Tal Ben-Haim and Winston Reid did not feature for the Hammers
but are expected to be available for the opening game against Aston Villa at
Villa Park on Saturday.

Mark Hughes and Avram Grant embrace welcome change in fortune
The expected arrival of a glut of new names to the Premier League has yet to
materialise, while there are only three new managers - and all are familiar
faces.

Yet, for Mark Hughes - stepping into Roy Hodgson's shoes - and Avram Grant,
installed at Fulham and West Ham respectively, the challenges are as
demanding as any they have faced. On Saturday both men put the finishing
touches to preparations, Fulham beating Werder Bremen 5-1, thanks to an
11-minute second-half hat-trick from substitute Zoltan Gera, and West Ham
beating Deportivo La Coruna in a penalty shoot-out after a 0-0 draw. The
score flattered Fulham - Werder were in control before they made three
interval changes. But what an impressive start it was for Hughes, who is
still smarting from the manner of his dismissal by Manchester City.
Originally pessimistic about a return to the capital, Hughes was impressed
enough, after meetings with chairman and owner Mohamed Fayed and chief
executive Alistair Mackintosh, that the club's objectives matched his own.
It was easier to lure Grant to Upton Park. A man with an international
background, and one who delivered Chelsea to within a penalty kick of the
Champions League, he had worked with both hands tied behind his back at
Portsmouth. Relegation last season could not be avoided, but at least he
left the fans with the memories of an FA Cup final.
Twenty minutes before kick-off, Fayed set off on his customary half-lap from
the Cottage to the directors' box, taking with him his new manager. The
response, albeit from just a sprinkling of fans, was enthusiastic and
welcoming, with Hughes waving in a dignified manner before returning to the
dressing room. In his programme notes, Hughes reiterated his game-plan for
the coming season: "Today is my first opportunity to shape the team the way
I want," he said, before adding "and for them also to show me what they can
do."

Werder, fielding 10 full internationals - England tormentor Mezut Ozil
started on the bench - were ahead by the 11th minute through one-time
Chelsea flop Hugo Almeida, who later struck a post. Ozil came on before
half-time, for the injured Tim Borowski. Werder looked better prepared and
fitter but Bobby Zamora stole a 53rd minute equaliser - prompting chants of
"Bobby for England". Hughes had warned Zamora not to be a "one-season
wonder" and the striker did not disappoint.

Werder made seven changes and Gera, after just five minutes on the pitch,
lobbed Tim Wiese in spectacular fashion, before adding two more. Eddie
Johnson completed the scoring to enable Hughes to boast a victory on his
managerial debut that Fulham hardly deserved. Still, a win is a win, and
Hughes will happily take an opening success into Saturday's trip to Bolton.
At Zamora's former club, Grant was also putting the finishing touches to the
side that will face Aston Villa. However popular Gianfranco Zola was, Grant
has arrived with a pedigree and a purpose. After the soap opera that
followed the arrival of the two Davids, Gold and Sullivan, Grant was
appointed early enough to oversee the pre-season arrangements and led West
Ham to impressive wins over Greek champions Panathinaikos and Borussia
Mönchgladbach. West Ham were second best to Deportivo in the first half,
where they gave a debut to German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger. They held
on, though, to secure a seventh game without loss and then won the shoot-out
5-3 with England failure Robert Green saving from Juan Carlos Valeron to win
the SBOBET Cup. For Hughes and Grant, the future is looking surprisingly
rosy.

Today's match at Upton Park, where West Ham will face Deportivo La Coruna,
will now be played for the SBOBet Cup rather than the Bobby Moore Cup.
Stephanie Moore, MBE, said she was "sad and disappointed" at the decision.
Previously, £1 of each ticket sold went to Cancer Research UK. However, West
Ham have said they will continue to support the Bobby Moore Fund, while
SBOBet have pledged to donate £10,000 to the cancer research charity.
Moore died of Bowel cancer in 1993.

Ben Haim not the last addition
ITV
Published: Saturday, 7 August 2010, 2:13PM

West Ham are confident that Portsmouth defender Tal Ben Haim will not be the
last of the summer arrivals at Upton Park. Ben Haim, 28, finally completed
his protracted move to West Ham on a five-month loan deal amid reported
concerns that he has a groin problem. The Israel international is manager
Avram Grant's fourth signing since he took over at West Ham, following the
arrival of German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, Mexican winger Pablo
Barrera and French forward Frederic Piquionne. Grant, who has introduced a
new 4-3-3 system at West Ham for the new season, is still looking to
strengthen his squad further ahead of the new season - possibly by the end
of the week. A club statement read: "Club officials have stepped up their
bid to secure a fifth signing and hope to have the deal finalised within the
next 72 hours. "The potential recruit is a young international, who
represented his country to distinction at the 2010 FIFA World Cup."
West Ham have fielded Germany Under-21 international Anis Ben-Hatira and
Argentina's Milton Caraglio during pre-season, though neither featured
against Ipswich at the weekend. The club have also been linked with Serbian
winger Miralem Sulejmani, who played under West Ham's new assistant manager
Zeljko Petrovic at Ajax. Ben Haim's move to Upton Park reunites him with
Grant, who he has played under for Chelsea, Portsmouth and the Israel
national team.
He has also played for Bolton, Sunderland and Manchester City in a nomadic
Barclays Premier League career.

Diamanti the target of 'several offers'

West Ham forward Alessandro Diamanti has said he expects to stay at Upton
Park this season. Diamanti, 27, was linked with Olympiakos earlier this
summer amid reports he is surplus to requirements under new boss Avram
Grant, while Brescia, Parma and Fiorentina are also said to be considering a
move. However, while Diamanti admits there has been interest, he says he is
happy in the Premier League and does not expect to move on. "I feel good in
England," he told Sky Italia. "This year, I'll almost certainly stay put,
although my agents are considering several offers and I am happy to have
received interest from other teams." Asked if he missed the Italian league,
he said: "Yes, but I like being here because I feel good." Diamanti admits
he was sad to see Gianfranco Zola dismissed as West Ham boss at the end of
last season, however. "The coach was a champion and a great person," he
said. "I took his advice with pleasure."

Predictions
West Ham Till I Die

So, we stand on the eve of another PL season. Avram Grant is now at the
helm and the pre-season indications are good. There appears to be a sense
of greater organisation and purpose at the club and the players seem to have
adjusted well to the new regime. Grant has been single minded in installing
his preferred playing formation and it looks to be working. In addition,
five new players, to date, have been signed to give the squad greater depth
and, hopefully, quality.

Pre-season provides indicators that can be either accurate or misleading.
For instance in the 1985-86 pre-season the squad lost every one of their
warm up games. Most felt that it would be another season of struggle, like
the one that preceded it, and then it all just clicked in to place when the
season commenced. Lets just hope that this pre-season is an accurate
indicator of our fortunes and, if anything, it underplays just how well we
are going to do .

What will constitute a good season? I view it in terms of three levels of
achievement. Level one is staying out of the relegation dogfight and
achieving a fairly comfortable finish around 14th. Level two is a middle
table finish, around 11th. Level three is a top ten finish, with the
outside possibility of a Europa League place.

Of course it is possible that, like in 1985-86, things may click and we
could exceed these expectations, but we will have to wait and see how the
land lies. Exceeding performance expectations may very well rely upon the
twin variables of fitness and form; we well as the added factor of whether
Grant can add further quality to the squad in the remainder of this transfer
window and in January?

I view the two domestic cups as an added bonus. There is nothing that West
Ham fans enjoy like a good cup run. Grant has a good record in the domestic
cups and, hopefully, he can bring that to Upton Park. The League Cup (under
its various sponsorship names) has been a competition that we have been
incredibly unlucky in over the decades. We have been finalist and
semi-finalists so many times and always failed to win it. Even the West Ham
of Moore, Hurst and Peters fell at the last (WBA in 1965 Final) and second
from last (Leicester City in 1966 semis) hurdles. Whilst the most painful
semi-final defeats were unquestionably to Stoke City (in the classic 1972
semis) and probably also to Luton Town (in the farcical 1988 semis). Can
Grant overcome this league cup historical hoodoo?

Having won the FA three times and been finalists twice, we have historically
done well in this most famous of cup competitions. However, we are some way
behind the Spurs and Man Utd in the FA Cup winning stakes! Regardless, the
FA Cup remains a very realistic target for us as a club. And I think that
most fans will forgive an average (but comfortable) league performance if it
it is allied to an appearance at the new Wembley. Personally, I would
prefer to see a stronger league performance, as that is is a more robust
indicator of a positive future 'direction of travel' for the club But if
that is not possible then no one is going to turn their noses up at a trip
to Wembley! It would be good to erase the lingering frustration and regret
of the penalty defeat to Liverpool in 2006, where we put in one of the
greatest losing FA Cup performances in the long history of the competition.

Like the TV ad advises, the tenure of this piece has embraced the optimism
of the new season. It is perfectly possible that we will struggle in the
league and exit both cups early. However, I do not feel that will be the
case. We have added depth and extra quality to the squad, plus Grant
appears to possess tactical nous and has brought much needed organisation
and discipline to the set up. The very least we should expect is a
mid-table finish and a cup run. Anything else will be a added and very
welcome bonus.

So, predictions, how will Avram Grant's West Ham fare this coming season?
Register your pre-season prediction and we will hold a review in mid-season
and at the season's end.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis set to blow transfer budget on £10m West Ham striker
Carlton Cole
By JOE BERNSTEIN Last updated at 12:22 AM on 8th August 2010
Daily Mail

Stoke are ready to smash their transfer record to sign West Ham striker
Carlton Cole. Manager Tony Pulis is prepared to spend his entire £10million
budget on the 26-year-old. Pulis has achieved miracles on a limited budget
in two years in the Premier League and the club's record purchase was the
£6m paid for Turkish star Tuncay last season. But Stoke will not be held to
ransom by West Ham, who value Cole at £12m. Stoke have been linked with a
number of strikers this summer, including Nice's Loic Remy and Ipswich's
Jonathan Walters, but Cole is the player they want. West Ham manager Avram
Grant would like to keep Cole but co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold
are not in a position to turn down a major bid. Winger Matt Etherington was
Stoke's leading Premier League scorer last season with only five goals but
the club managed to finish comfortably mid-table in 11th place. Cole's
arrival could see James Beattie's exit to Blackburn.

Introduction
• West Ham United welcome Spanish opponents RC Deportivo La Coruna for their seventh and pre-season fixture ahead of the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League season.
• The Hammers have played six matches so far this summer, winning the first five and drawing just one - their last outing being on Tuesday night away to Southend United.
• This weekend's traditional Boleyn Ground curtain-raiser will be played for the SBOBET Cup in aid of the Academy. The club was keen to recognise the principal partner's strong support for the youth system as well as community and charitable causes.
• West Ham will be looking to make it seven matches unbeaten in pre-season. So far, Avram Grant's men have secured victories over League One outfit Peterborough United (2-1), German side VfL Borussia Monchengladbach (2-0), Greek champions Panathinaikos (1-0), League One outfit MK Dons (2-0), Championship club Ipswich Town (1-0) before a draw at Southend United (1-1).
• Saturday's fixture could see home debuts for Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pablo Barrera and Frederic Piquionne while Tal Ben Haim has yet to figure for the club at all after joining from Portsmouth on Tuesday.
• The match will be the final fixture contested before the Barclays Premier League season commences with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday 14 August.
• Should the SBOBET Cup match finish in a draw, then penalties will be played to determine the winners.
• Deportivo, who finshed tenth in La Liga last term, have enjoyed an illustrious recent history, winning the Spanish title for the first time in their history in 2000 and finishing as runners-up in each of the following two seasons.
• Two former Hammers played for the Galician club, who reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2003/04. They were Lionel Scaloni and Diego Tristan.
• The visit of Deportivo will represent the second by a Spanish club in three years after Villarreal CF came to the Boleyn Ground in 2008.
• The prestige pre-season opener at the Boleyn Ground has attracted a host of leading clubs in recent years including PSV Eindhoven (2-1, 2003), Anderlecht (4-4, Anderlecht win 5-4 on penalties, 2004), Osasuna (1-1, 2005), Olympiakos (1-1, 2006), AS Roma (2-1, 2007), Villarreal CF (1-1, 2008) and SSC Napoli (0-1, 2009).
• Fans should note that there is no in-stadia betting on Saturday. This is due to the change over for the Barclays Premier League season which will see club principal partners SBOBET providing the service. This will be in place as normal from Saturday 21 August and the visit of Bolton Wanderers.
Last meeting
• The club's most recent meeting took place during West Ham United's tour of Spain in 1926. Tommy Yews and Vic Watson scored in a 2-1 victory on 30 May of that year.

• Benni McCarthy scored his first goal for the club this summer with a fine half-volley against Monchengladbach.

SBOBET back the Fund

The club's principal partners are once again making a significant donation to the Bobby Moore Fund
06.08.2010

West Ham United are delighted to announce that SBOBET will be presenting the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK with a £10,000 cheque before Saturday's SBOBET Cup match against RC Deportivo La Coruna.

The club's principal partners have strongly supported the Fund ever since joining forces with West Ham back in December 2008 and this is just the latest significant financial gesture, following on from the club's own most recent £4,000 donation last month.

Back in December, SBOBET paid for every fan attending the Manchester United home game to have a scarf bearing the Fund's name - which helped in their drive to raise awareness of bowel cancer among supporters - while also presenting another cheque for £5,000 at that fixture.

SBOBET also sponsor the whufc.com Player of the Month award and the WHUIFC supporters' team. In addition, they honoured Tony Carr with a special award in recognition of his outstanding work with the Academy back in May.

Both teams will be presented to special guests from SBOBET before the Deportivo match and the SBOBET Cup in aid of the Academy will be handed over to the winning captain immediately after the final whistle. Should the game finish level after 90 minutes, then a penalty shoot-out will be staged to decide the victors.

SBOBET.com is one of the world's leading online gaming internet sites, offering more than 500 sporting events every week. It has extensive coverage of all major football leagues and international sporting events. SBOBET uses the latest technologies to deliver a fast and secure player environment.

West Ham United and SBOBET travelled to China together in summer 2009 for the Barclays Asia Trophy and continue to explore international possibilities, especially with the SBOBET's high standing in major Asian territories. SBOBET are also helping to raise the Hammers' profile at home and abroad through events like Soccerex.

Sulejmani on his way

It has been announced that Ajax winger Miralem Sulejmani will join West Ham on loan for the 2010/11 season. The Serbian wide man became the Amsterdam-based club's record signing in 2008 when they paid fellow Eredivisie outfit Heerenveen €16.25million for the pacy 21-year-old. However the Belgrade-born international has failed to impress at Ajax and views the chance to feature in the Premier League as the ideal opportunity in which to kick-start his career. He is expected to arrive in London this afternoon in order to undergo a medical before rubber-stamping his switch. News of Sulejmani's imminent move to England was announced earlier this afternoon by the Dutch media. Ajax boss Martin Jol, speaking about the possibility of losing Sulejmani, admitted that he was reluctant to lose him - albeit for just one season in which his entire salaray is expected to be picked up by the Hammers. "The interest from West Ham has existed for some time and that was in his [Sulejmani's] head," said the former Tottenham coach. "We tried to stretch it out as long as possible but their deadline was approaching. "It saves a substantial salary, anyway. On the other hand I had him here on Sunday against FC Groningen - and was happy to."

Sulejmani, speaking before he left for London told reporters that they will be seeing him again before too long - hinting that there will be no 'option to buy' in the arrangement between West Ham and Ajax. "I am leaving for West Ham," he announced, "but I'll come back next year full of power." The Serbian would become Avram Grant's sixth capture of the summer following the arrival of Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pablo Barrera, Frederic Piquionne, Winston Reid and Tal Ben Haim, who is also on loan (from Portsmouth). He would become the ninth player - all foreign - signed since David Sullivan and David Gold bought into the club back in January, with Ilan, Mido and Benni McCarthy to add to the above list.

No Behrami bid says agent
Midfielder still a part of the Hammers' setup
By Simone Bargellini Last updated: 6th August 2010

West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami is still a major player at Upton Park, according to his agent. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Serie A this week after Roma reportedly expressed an interest. His agent, Alessandro Beltrami, admits that the Switzerland international is flattered by such interest, but at the moment he is still a West Ham player. Beltrami said that a number of clubs have been in contact over the popular midfielder but said all interested parties must go through the club. "West Ham considers Behrami a major player," he told Sky Italia. "The situation is therefore a little difficult."
Behrami has made no secret of his desire to play on the European stage, which he is unlikely to do at Upton Park in the near future given their fight for survival last season. Such desire has brought about interest from a number of clubs, according to Beltrami, but he says no formal bid has been made. "Some clubs asked me about the player but at the moment there is nothing concrete," he said. "The player is linked to West Ham and if a club is interested they should talk to them." He said: "Valon is glad of the interest of Roma. He is honoured to be in the aims of such a prestigious club." Asked if a loan spell were an option, he said: "I think it is not a plausible hypothesis."

In-demand Remy in no rush
Four Prem clubs chasing French ace
Last updated: 6th August 2010

Loic Remy's agent has told skysports.com the striker is in no rush to make a decision on his future. The Nice ace is one of the most sought-after players in this summer's transfer window after attracting interest from a host of clubs across Europe. West Ham and Liverpool have both expressed an interest in the 23-year-old while Stoke held talks with Remy and showed him around their training ground on Thursday. The likes of Tottenham and Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Remy, who has been likened to Thierry Henry in his homeland. Up to eight clubs are thought to be chasing Remy's signature with the player deciding to visit Stoke's training ground after Potters boss Tony Pulis and assistant manager Dave Kempflew out to see him in France earlier this week Remy's agent, Frederic Guerra, admits the player was impressed by Stoke's desire to sign him, but that he was in no rush to decide what club he wants to move to.
"Loic is a polite person and after Tony Pulis and Dave Kemp came to see him in France he felt it was right to come and look at Stoke," Guerra told skysports.com. "Loic did not know much about Stoke, but he was very impressed by what Tony and Dave had to say to him. "He was also impressed by Stoke's training ground and he was amazed by the enthusiasm of the club's fans after arriving there. "Loic is thankful for Stoke for showing an interest in him and he wishes them all the best for the future. "However, Loic is in no rush to make a decision on his future. "There are eight clubs - four in the UK - who are all chasing Loic and he will take his time before deciding what is the best move for him."

Stoke make record bid for Cole - Exclusive
Published 00:00 07/08/10 By Alan Nixon
The Mirror

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has made a £12million bid for West Ham's Carlton Cole. And the Hammers are happy to let him go. The deal for the England striker is worth £9m up front with a further £3m on appearances, giving West Ham enough money to buy a replacement. Boss Avram Grant wants Everton's Yakubu and hopes a £7m-plus bid will persuade David Moyes to sell. The merry-go-round started yesterday as cash-rich Stoke went back in for Cole after their bid to land French striker Loic Remy stalled after Nice demanded £14.3m for him. The Potters now want to get Cole signed in a club record swoop. Hammers supremos David Sullivan and David Gold are poised to accept the bid. With Everton willing to sell Yakubu at the right price, the deals could be done by next weekend.

Bobby Moore's widow unhappy with cup snub

The Mirror

Bobby Moore's widow has hit out at West Ham for ditching a benefit game for their legendary former captain's cancer charity. Stephanie Moore MBE was stunned last month after being told the club were renaming the Bobby Moore Cup – which takes place at Upton Park today when the Hammers play Deportivo La Coruna. It is now called the SBOBET Cup – and angry fans have launched a petition to have it reversed. West Ham argue that they will continue to support the Bobby Moore Fund through branding, advertising and other contributions. SBOBET are also due to make a £10,000 donation to the fund today. But Stephanie told Mirror Sport: "I am sad and disappointed that the club has made the decision not to hold the Bobby Moore Cup this year."
After Moore died from bowel cancer, aged 51 in 1993, a fund in his name was set up in partnership with Cancer Research UK to raise money for research into the disease.

And quotes from Ajax boss Martin Jol have supported the rumour – and the Serbian wide man could be a Hammer before the start of the season. Yesterday the club announced the signing of World Cup ace Winston Reid, who follows Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pablo Barrera, Frederic Piquionne and Tal Ben-Haim to the Boleyn Ground. The 21-year-old, who cost the Eredivisie giants 16.25 million euros (£13.5 million) two years ago, is expected in East London this afternoon to undergo a medical before signing. Former Tottenham coach Martin Jol said: "The interest from West Ham has existed for some time and that was in his [Sulejmani's] head. "We tried to stretch it out as long as possible but their deadline was approaching. It saves a substantial salary, anyway. "On the other hand I had him here on Sunday against FC Groningen - and was happy to," Jol added. It seemed Jol had put to bed any such move after rejecting the chance to join Fulham but, shortly afterwards, agreed to sign Mounir El Hamadoui. And Sulejmani told De Telegraaf: "I am leaving for West Ham but I'll come back next year full of power," intimating that, despite reports, there would be no option to buy inserted into the deal.

Ben's big move
Sky Sports' new star gets ready for his debut
Last updated: 6th August 2010
SSN

It was one of the biggest transfer deals of the summer when Ben Shephard made the switch from GMTV to Sky Sports. One of the best-known faces on British television joins us ahead of our biggest ever season of live football after a decade with ITV's breakfast show. Now Sky Sports viewers can look forward to watching Ben co-present Goals on Sunday with Chris Kamara every weekend, as well as fronting selected live UEFA Champions League matches. Ahead of his first show on Sunday morning, skysports.com caught up with Ben to find out why he decided to move into sports broadcasting.

He also talked about his footballing heroes, his love for West Ham and why he's not looking forward to doing karaoke with Kammy...

skysports.com: What attracted you to working in sport?
BEN: I grew up as a huge sports fan, a huge football fan and, for my sins, a huge West Ham fan. One of my greatest passions is being able to run around like an idiot and take part in as many sports as possible, so to get the chance to talk about sport professionally is a dream come true. It's a good excuse to not be in the pub talking about football - and my wife can't believe she can't moan about me watching football any more. It's research!

skysports.com: And what drew you to Sky Sports?
BEN: Well Sky has been at the forefront of so many technological advances in TV. I've worked in telly now for nearly 12 years and Sky are consistently breaking boundaries. There's HD, there's the best studios and now the onset of 3D, which I saw the other day and it's incredible. Being in an environment that is ground-breaking is really exciting for me in terms of my experience. I've done all sorts of exciting things in my career in broadcasting, but this is something completely new.

skysports.com: Who are you looking forward to working with?
BEN: There are some fantastic people at Sky. I'm a huge admirer of Richard Keys, who has been one of the best broadcasters around for years and I think Jeff Stelling is remarkable. Then there's all the analysts like Andy Gray, Jamie Redknapp, Tony Gale, Paul Merson and all the other characters. And then there's Kammy of course...

skysports.com: Are you ready to sit on a sofa with Chris Kamara every Sunday morning?
BEN: I'm a bit nervous because I'm not particularly good at karaoke and I think I'll have to get a song out for him at some point. I'm not sure my 'Jailhouse Rock' will live up to expectations! But the thing that I love about watching Chris Kamara is his passion and his enthusiasm. I love being able to enthuse people about stuff I'm excited about and whenever you talk to people about Kammy, without fail they just love how much he's enjoying what he's doing. I think it's going to be an absolute pleasure and I don't doubt I'm going to learn an awful lot about football from him because he's been at the coalface as a player, a manager and a broadcaster for years. And if he can help me tune up my singing voice as well them my wife will be pleased!

skysports.com: When did your love of football begin?
BEN: I went to school in Chigwell in Essex and football was all we played. With training and matches I played football five times a week and then I played rugby on a Sunday too. My mum always said I was like a dog; I just needed to go outside and run around! Kicking a football around with my mates was the heartbeat of everything I did and schoolwork or piano practice just got in the way.

skysports.com: Were you ever close to going pro?
BEN: No. I played football like a rugby player - a lot of enthusiasm, but not much class. I've been lucky to play in some televised games and anybody's who's seen me will know I'm more noted for my very-badly-timed tackling than my striking! I'm a better rugby player than I am a footballer, but my chance of being a professional athlete fell apart when I realised how tasty beer was and how much fun girls were. That's what I blame it on!

skysports.com: Why did you choose West Ham?
BEN: My family are all from the Midlands and are all Villa fans, but when I went to school in Chigwell at the age of 10, all of my friends were West Ham. They were the first team I went to see play and for years we used to go down and sneak in as Under-12's, even when we were much older. It was the most exciting atmosphere and the energy was - and still is - like nothing else I've ever experienced. Walking into your home ground and being surrounded by people who are so passionate is a singular sensation that can't be replicated, no matter how hard you try. I still get that buzz when I turn up to West Ham now.

I've been lucky enough to get to know some of the players I used to look up to and play football with them, which is a big thrill for me. I'm like a competition winner when I play with some of those guys; I'm like any other football fan would be when I meet those people.

skysports.com: Who are your footballing heroes?
BEN: I have a huge amount of respect for Tony Cottee and Frank McAvennie, who are two legends of West Ham. I know TC quite well now and he's a brilliant bloke. Then there's Tony Gale, Alan Devonshire and Julian Dicks, who probably personifies my dream footballer. He was so committed and wore his heart on his sleeve - and he could smash a penalty in like nobody else!

Further down the line, Paolo Di Canio is one of the greatest advocates of the type of football that West Ham fans like seeing played. I got to play with him in Soccer Aid two years ago and although people say you should never meet your idols, he was everything I could possibly hope for and more. He was really passionate about West Ham, he still hopes to be the manager one day, and hopefully he will come and be part of the club again because he is an icon.

skysports.com: How do you think West Ham will get on this season?
BEN: After last year, any West Ham fan would say we just need a bit more consistency. We've got the spine of a great team in Carlton Cole, Scotty Parker, Mark Noble, Robert Greenand James Tomkins and if everybody can play consistently around them we can play the football that fans of West Ham love to see. Hopefully Avram Grant will deliver that.

They say winning is a habit and last year we'd go on a good run, only to see it all fall apart. I saw the boys play Chelsea just before Christmas and we deserved to win that game and I walked away wondering why we were down the bottom. The potential is there and every West Ham fan can see it. Let's consolidate this season and then get in the Champions League next year!

skysports.com: Speaking of the Champions League, you'll be presenting some of the live games this year. Do you think we'll get an English winner this season?
BEN: I hope so. We've got teams that can do it and once you reach the business end you just need a little bit of luck and hope you can avoid injuries. The United and Chelsea squads, in particular, have got experience throughout and they have the depth to go all the way. I'm obviously a huge Harry Redknapp fan as well, so I'd love to see Spurs get in there and mix it up. It would be tremendous for English football if they could go on a run. I love watching the teams from all around Europe, but for me it makes it even more tantalising when there's an English interest because I'm a patriot at heart.

Don't miss Ben's first Goals On Sunday this weekend from 11am on Sky Sports HD1 & 1.

Reid signs
WHUFC.com
Winston Reid has become the fifth new face at the Boleyn Ground this summer
05.08.2010

West Ham United are delighted to announce the capture of New Zealand FIFA
World Cup defender Winston Reid. The 22-year-old has joined the Hammers on a
three-year contract from Danish Superliga club FC Midtjylland for an
undisclosed fee. He had a medical on Thursday afternoon and met with the
manager Avram Grant at Chadwell Heath. He then headed to the Boleyn Ground
to finalise his dream move later in the evening. Reid becomes the fifth new
recruit after Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pablo Barrera, Frederic Piquionne and Tal
Ben Haim. Reid had caught the eye at this summer's tournament in South
Africa, where he scored a dramatic late equaliser against Slovakia and
helped the unheralded All Whites to further impressive draws with Italy and
Paraguay. A towering presence, the North Shore-born player is excited about
the prospect of testing himself in the Barclays Premier League following
five seasons and more than 80 appearances for Midtylland. "I am looking
forward to getting started," he told whufc.com, while taking his first look
around the Boleyn Ground. "My dream has been to come and play in the Premier
League and I am happy that I am a West Ham player. "It has been a mad couple
of weeks and the last couple of days have been pretty hectic, so I am just
happy to be here now. I am pretty decent fitness-wise. I had a game last
Sunday so I am in pretty good nick. "The World Cup was a life-changing
experience and something I will remember forever. I want to bring the
positives from that here on the pitch at West Ham. "This club has great
history and the league is one of the best in the world. I am looking forward
to the challenge ahead."

Reid, who is of Maori heritage, moved from his native New Zealand to Denmark
at the age of ten, beginning his career with local club SUB Sonderborg.
The 6'3" centre-back signed professional terms with Midtjylland at the age
of 17 in 2005, having come through the same Academy structure as Palermo and
Denmark defender Simon Kjaer. In 2007/08, Reid played four times in Europe
as Midtylland reached the UEFA Cup first round before being defeated by
Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow. At domestic level, he totalled 85 Superliga
appearances for his club, turning out for the final time in a 1-0 defeat at
Brondby IF on 1 August. Having been a Danish citizen since 2006 and
represented the country at U19, U20 and U21 levels, Reid opted to play for
the nation of his birth at senior level earlier this year. After making his
debut in a friendly against Australia in May, the defender impressed in a
surprise 1-0 victory over Serbia, cementing his place in Ricki Herbert's
World Cup squad. In South Africa, the versatile Reid was in imperious form
in his other preferred position of right-back, showing his adaptability and
ability to perform at the very highest level.

Grant glad to be home
WHUFC.com
The manager will finally get to lead the team out at home this Saturday
against Deportivo
06.08.2010

Avram Grant is relishing the prospect of walking out at the Boleyn Ground as
manager on Saturday against RC Deportivo La Coruna after a busy summer
schedule away from home. The manager has enjoyed a successful pre-season but
said coming to play in front of the Hammers fans would be a step forward. He
will have the chance to show off some of his new recruits Thomas
Hitzlsperger, Tal Ben Haim, Pablo Barrera, Frederic Piquionne and Winston
Reid and combine them with England quartet Robert Green, Matthew Upson,
Scott Parker and Carlton Cole. "We have played enough away," Grant said
after six games unbeaten away from east London, five of them wins. "I want
to play in our home and to feel our supporters and our atmosphere because
they will be very important for us. "We are on the right way. The players
know what we want from them. They know how to do it. Of course we have only
had four weeks of preparation but by the beginning of the season we want to
be better and we will be better. "I think the players' attitudes are very
good. They want to succeed and are giving everything in training to be
better. For a first step, it is good."

Grant has learnt much about his players since the majority reported back for
duty on 5 July and admitted he did not expect the schedule to include the
positives of conceding just two goals in six unbeaten games and going to
Germany and beating strong opposition like VfL Borussia Monchengladbach and
UEFA Champions League contenders Panathinaikos. "It's very difficult to get
five wins even in training so I am pleased because the name of the game is
to win games. I think the winning [mentality] is here and we need to follow
this path to bring us more wins. "We are going into a long season with good
days and bad days and it's important that the players learn how to behave on
good days and not so good days."

Everything has been planned and primed with next Saturday's trip to Aston
Villa in mind, when the likes of Herita Ilunga, Danny Gabbidon and Kieron
Dyer will hope to show they have timed their comeback from long lay-offs to
perfection. Grant said although there was the determination to beat Depor,
the main focus was to hone the work on the practice pitches. "These games
are not the target - the target is the league. We will do something that
will put us in good shape for the beginning of the season. We will follow
our programme and will be ready for this."

Carr demanding more
WHUFC.com
Academy Director Tony Carr wants his young scholars to reach higher
standards
05.08.2010

Tony Carr is demanding more from his players as the Under-18s reach the
conclusion of their pre-season preparations. West Ham United's youngsters
secured a 2-0 friendly victory at Ipswich Town but, with a little more than
two weeks to go until their FA Premier Academy League opener against West
Bromwich Albion on 21 August, Carr thinks improvements can be made. That
said, the Academy Director was happy to score a morale-boosting win in
Suffolk through goals from Republic of Ireland youth international Daniel
Purdy and midfielder Dominic Vose. "It's always nice to go to Ipswich as
they have good facilities, good pitches and nice people there," said Carr.
"I was pleasantly surprised to bump into Mike Pejic there, who I faced when
we played Plymouth Argyle in the FA Youth Cup last season, as he has taken
over their youth Academy. "It was a decent game played in three 30-minute
sections, enabling us to bring players on and off and give them some
coaching in between. "I would say Ipswich had the first half an hour in
terms of possession of the ball - they kept it better than us. We were out
of the blocks a little bit slowly, which can happen when you play away from
home and some of the players don't travel together and don't quite get to
there at the right time and it can disrupt your early performance."

West Ham's goals on Wednesday came in the second and third of the 30-minute
periods as the visitors finished the game strongly after an uncertain start.
The first saw Paco Craig hauled down at the far post and Purdy step up and
put the spot-kick low into the corner after 55 minutes. The win was wrapped
up at the climax of West Ham's best move of the game with ten minutes
remaining, with the ball being worked from front to back before Dominic Vose
slotted Jack Werndly's lay-off into the corner from just outside the penalty
area. "We slowly got into the game and although I didn't think we played
that well overall, we did finish the game strongly," Carr added. "They had
one opportunity in the first period which went wide but, other than that, we
reduced them to long-range efforts. "Sam Cowler in goal had a very good game
and was solid and commanding, and I was pleased with his performance,
Without being disrespectful, the rest of the team were a little bit short of
where I would like them to be at this stage of pre-season. "Two-nil
flattered us a little bit as we didn't play too well, but we did finish
strongly and it's another 90 minutes under the belts of the players." "We've
got three friendlies left before we start on 21 August to iron all those
problems out. It also gives me things to emphasise in training, so these
games are all useful exercises."

West Ham fielded an inexperienced side at Ipswich, with the likes of Deniz
Mehmet, Sergio Sanchez, George Moncur, Eoin Wearen, Filip Modelski and
Robert Hall away with the reserves at Dagenham & Redbridge on the same day.
The Academy Director said it was important for the young scholars to get
playing time, whichever team they were turning out for. "The reserve team is
about half of the youth team, which means the younger element in the youth
team are getting games, which is good and is the whole idea of pre-season.
You want players to get matches under their belts, so it is good all-round.
"We go again at home to Leyton Orient on Saturday morning at Little Heath,
with kick-off at 11am. If any supporters would like to come down, then
admission and parking free and you will still have plenty of time to get to
Upton Park for the first-team game against Deportivo La Coruna at 3pm."

West Ham United U18: Cowler, Young, Craig, K.Lee, Driver, Vose, Turgott,
Hurley, Purdy, Subuola, Tombides
Subs used: Powell, Hunt, Werndly

Tal targeting successful stay
WHUFC.com
New signing Tal Ben Haim is looking forward to turning out for West Ham
United
05.08.2010

Tal Ben Haim is aiming to enjoy a successful future at West Ham United. The
Israel defender has moved to the Boleyn Ground from Championship new boys
Portsmouth on an initial five-month loan with a view to making his transfer
permanent in January. Ben Haim's move sees him reunited with Avram Grant,
who capped him 25 times at international level before managing him at club
level at both Chelsea and Portsmouth. The 28-year-old has extensive Barclays
Premier League experience, having originally moved to English football with
Bolton Wanderers in summer 2004. Prior to that, Ben Haim had spent three
seasons with Maccabi Tel Aviv, winning the Israeli Premier League title in
2003. "I'm happy to be here at a good club with good people and good
players. I'm looking forward to a new season in the Premier League," said
Ben Haim, who trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Tuesday.
"Of course, I'm pleased to be back in Premier League. I have played here for
six years and it is one of the best leagues in the world. I'm happy to be
with West Ham now. My long-term plan is to stay longer, but my immediate aim
is to play."

A versatile defender, Ben Haim is best known as a centre-back, but is
comfortable in either full-back position. With competition for places
fierce, the Rishon LeZion-born player is happy to turn out wherever manager
Grant sees fit. "Obviously the manager knows me and where I prefer to play,
but I can play in a few positions, so I'd be happy to play any position that
is necessary to help the team. "Avram understands players and likes to play
good attacking football. I like to do that as well, so I think we will work
well together."

Fry joins Addicks
WHUFC.com
Matt Fry has linked up with League One club Charlton Athletic on loan until
January
05.08.2010

Defender Matt Fry has joined Npower League One side Charlton Athletic on
loan until January. The second-year professional will link up with former
West Ham United club-mates Christian Dailly and Kyel Reid at the Valley,
returning to the club where he spent the final three months of last season.
The 19-year-old could partner the Scot at the heart of the Addicks' back
four when the 2010/11 campaign begins with a home meeting with AFC
Bournemouth on Saturday. Fry's second spell at the south London club is the
Hammers' first under the new youth loan system, which also allows players to
return to their parent club to play reserve-team matches. The teenager will
wear the No19 shirt at Charlton, and has also been given permission to turn
out for the Addicks in the Carling Cup and Johnstone's Paint Trophy. The
versatile player, who can also fill in at left-back, was watched by Charlton
manager Phil Parkinson during Wednesday's goalless reserve pre-season
friendly draw at Dagenham & Redbridge - a team he could face again in League
One action on 25 September.
Prior to joining Charlton, Fry enjoyed a successful loan spell at Gillingham
last season, making 13 league and cup appearances. This summer, the
youngster has appeared in the first-team pre-season friendly victories over
Peterborough United, VfL Borussia Monchengladbach and Greek champions
Panathinaikos, as well as Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Southend United.

Squad up for Saturday
WHUFC.com
Kieron Dyer is just one of a number of Hammers who cannot wait to take on
Deportivo this weekend
05.08.2010

Traditionally it is the fans who are thought to be the most excited about
the start of a new season but it is no different with the West Ham United
first team.
The players have all been speaking this week about the prospect of being
back at the Boleyn and taking on a good Spanish side in RC Deportivo La
Coruna. Saturday's match - to be played for the SBOBET Cup - will be the
first chance for the new recruits to experience the atmosphere of the
Academy of Football while their team-mates will all be itching to truly put
last season behind them. Kieron Dyer is a keen student of the game and
enjoys watching the best that European football has to be offer. As such, he
is looking forward to pitting his wits against Deportivo as a final warm-up
for the big Barclays Premier League kick-off at Aston Villa a week later.

"I am expecting quick players who are comfortable on the ball. Spain have
demonstrated they are the best national team in the world at the moment.
People say about the Premiership being the best league in the world but they
are catching us very quickly. It is going to be a great test and something
we need before we go to Villa."

Dyer is relishing the prospect of being able to play at home once again and
show the supporters what has been worked on over the summer months. "It is
good to go back to Upton Park. We always play there the week before the
season and usually have a sell-out. It will be good and hopefully we can
give the fans something to cheer about."

Mark Noble, who cites Barcelona duo Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta as his
favourite two players, is equally eager for the chance to pit his wits
against midfield schemers like Spain legend Juan Carlos Valeron. "They are
going to be a good technical side. "All Spanish sides are and every time we
have played one they have been good. We are looking forward to getting into
the season now and making the journey to Aston Villa. "Saturday will be good
for the new lads who don't know the atmosphere at West Ham yet. They are
going to enjoy that and hopefully the groundsman has the pitch lovely and
fresh for us and we can put on a good show."

New Zealand international Winston Reid joins West Ham
BBC.co.uk

West Ham have made their fifth signing of the summer after completing a deal
for New Zealand defender Winston Reid from Danish side FC Midtjylland. Reid,
22, who scored a memorable last-minute equaliser for New Zealand at the
World Cup against Slovakia, signed a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
He joins fellow new Upton Park arrivals Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pablo Barrera,
Frederic Piquionne and Tal Ben Haim. West Ham open the new Premier League
season on Saturday week at Aston Villa. "It has been a mad couple of weeks
and the last couple of days have been pretty hectic, so I am just happy to
be here now," Reid told the club website. "I am pretty decent fitness-wise.
I had a game last Sunday so I am in pretty good nick."

Reid, who only made his debut for New Zealand in May this year, had a
strange route to the World Cup. The Maori-descended player moved from New
Zealand to Denmark with his mother 11 years ago, playing football for
Denmark up to U21 level. He turned down a chance to play for New Zealand in
2007 before being contacted by a Kiwi journalist via Facebook before the
World Cup, and being told he was still eligible to play for the country of
his birth. Reid committed his future to New Zealand in March this year and
made his debut against Australia two months later. He has been a regular in
the Danish First Division for the last two years, being linked with a move
to Italy's Serie A and playing in both legs of Midtjylland's Uefa Cup
penalty shoot-out loss to Manchester City in August 2008.

Charlton sign Hammer Matt Fry and Woking's Ross Worner
BBC.co.uk

Charlton have re-signed West Ham defender Matt Fry on a youth loan deal and
captured Woking goalkeeper Ross Worner for an undisclosed fee. Fry, 19, who
recently signed a new two-year deal with West Ham, has joined until January.
He will still be available to play for the Premier League outfit's reserve
side, and can be recalled by West Ham at any point after the first 28 days.
Worner, 20, made 52 appearances for the Cards in Blue Square South last
season. Fry spent a short spell on loan with the Addicks at the end of last
season but did not make an appearance. The youngster, who can play left-back
or centre-half, signed his first professional contract with the Hammers in
June 2009.

He joined Gillingham on loan in October and went on to play 13 times before
returning to Upton Park in January after a knee injury ruled him out for six
weeks.
Worner had been with Woking since the age of 14, and made his first-team
debut at 17. Woking chairman Shahid Azeem said: "Ross has worked hard at his
game and been a great ambassador for our club. "We know he will do really
well in the future, as he fully deserves."

Reid deal confirmed
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 5th August 2010
By: Staff Writer

New Zealand international Winston Reid has been confirmed as Avram Grant's
fifth signing of the summer. As revealed here on KUMB.com yesterday, the
22-year-old, formerly of FC Midtylland, has signed a three-year contract for
an undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £3.5million. Reid - whose
middle name is Wiremu, in recognition of his Maori heritage - represented
his country at this summer's World Cup Finals, in which the New Zealanders
were dumped out at the group stage despite going through their three-match
campaign unbeaten. The central defender notched his only goal of the
tournament against Slovakia. 6'2" Reid chose to represent New Zealand as
recently as March of this year despite having featured previously for the
Danish under 21s, a country where he had lived since the age of 10. He is a
product of the renowned Midtylland youth system, and has regularly featured
in their first team since he was 17.
Having played over 100 times for his club - including forays into European
competition - Reid has no lack of experience despite his tender age.
Despite being primarily a centre-half, he can also play at right back - an
area in which the Hammers have struggled since former captain Lucas Neill
departed.

Ernie on the up

West Ham legend Ernie Gregory is said to be recovering well after suffering
a recent stroke. The 89-year-old former goalkeeper, whose playing career at
United - his one and only club - spanned more than twenty years was taken
ill earlier this year at his Goodmayes home, since when he has been
recovering at a rest home in Dagenham. Speaking in the latest edition of EX,
the magazine's Terry Connelly said: "Ernie has improved considerably since
he was first admitted to hospital in early March. He has been receiving
physiotherapy on his right arm and right leg, although he is still bedridden
when the nurses don't get him up and into a wheelchair. "It's sad to see a
big, strong man like Ernie in this way but he has amazed me how well he has
fought to try and get better. I've kept him up to date with all the West Ham
news; he fully understands what you say to him and responds in his own way
by raising his eyebrows and nodding. He is in fighting mood which is
obviously good to see."

A number of former colleagues are said to have visted Gregory since he was
taken ill, including fellow Hammers legend Billy Bonds, fomer player and
coach Ronnie Boyce, ex-midfielder Geoff Pike and 60s striker Brian Dear.
Ernie Gregory joined West Ham United's ground staff in 1936 two years before
signing as a player in 1938. However he was forced to wait another seven
years, following the onset of World War II, before becoming a regular
between the sticks - a position he held until 1960, when he called time on
his career following the Irons' long-awaited return to (the old) Division
One.

During that period, which spanned four decades, Gregory made 408 league and
cup appearances for the club - a goalkeeping record that was only superseded
in the late 1980s by Phil Parkes (who went on to make 436 appearances). His
sole international appearance was for an England 'B' side in a 1952 friendly
against France. Following his playing retirement at the age of 39, Gregory
took up coaching and became involved with both the reserves and first team
before taking up an admin role. He eventually retired at the age of 66,
following an incredible 51 years' service to West Ham, in 1987.

Despite having retired he remained a regular visitor at the Chadwell Heath
training ground for many years after, and up until recently still popped in
once a week to chat with Academy director Tony Carr and other club staff.

KUMB Editorial

"The first - and last - time KUMB spoke with Ernie was at the beginning of
this year, when we were trying to arrange an interview in which to discuss
his amazing career. Unfortunately Ernie wasn't too keen to go ahead with it
at the time - for some reason he thought that his stories would be of little
interest in modern times - but he was still happy to chat about his career
and former team mates during our brief conversation. It was therefore with
great sadness that we read of his recent illness - and with equal delight
that we learn he is recovering, albeit slowly. EX magazine have kindly
pledged to send all messages of support to Ernie at his current home, so if
anyone wishes to send a few words please do so by reply in the form below
and between us - KUMB and EX - we'll ensure those messages are received. In
the meantime our very best wishes go out to Ernie - a true West Ham United
legend."

Kovac has Brescia option
Midfielder not looking to leave West Ham
By Vasek Kadlec Last updated: 5th August 2010
SSN

Radoslav Kovac is not expected to leave West Ham during the transfer window
despite the 'door being open' for a switch to Brescia. The midfielder moved
to Upton Park on loan from Spartak Moscow in January 2009 before a permanent
deal was agreed a few months later. His agent has now revealed that, if
Kovac were to leave the Hammers, Brescia would be a possible destination.
The newly promoted Serie A club have a link with West Ham as their current
sporting director Gianluca Nani filled the same position at Upton Park until
February. Kovac's representative Viktor Kolar says Nani would welcome his
client to Brescia, but does not think a transfer will go ahead this summer.
"I know that the door to Brescia is always open for Radek and Mr Nani is the
man behind it," Kolar told deniksport.cz. "Brescia would come into
consideration only next year."

Whether Kovac seeks another challenge will depend on how regularly he plays
for West Ham and the early signs are that he figures in the plans of new
manager Avram Grant. Kolar continued: "New manager Avram Grant has been
picking Radek in the pre-season friendlies so far. "The only game he did not
start was against Ipswich, and in that one he came on as a substitute for
the final quarter of an hour. "Moreover, if he should not secure his regular
position and becomes an unwanted player, we would prefer a loan into the
English league."

West Ham boss Avram Grant has sent Milton Caraglio packing back to Argentina
after he turned up overweight. Rosario Central forward Caraglio, 22, arrived
at Upton Park on trial last Monday with a view to a £5million transfer. The
Argentine striker played 64 minutes against MK Dons last week in a friendly
as the Hammers won 2-0. But he then failed a medical after past problems
with his knees and Hammers' chief Grant was also unhappy with his overall
physical condition. West Ham already have one striker battling to reduce his
weight after Benni McCarthy, 32, piled on the pounds after arriving in
January.

Winston Reid is aiming to bring a bit of World Cup magic to West Ham after
completing his move from FC Midtjylland. New Zealand defender Reid on
Thursday night signed a three-year contract at Upton Park after the Hammers
agreed an undisclosed fee for the 22-year-old. Reid helped make his country
one of the stories of this summer's World Cup, with the All Whites securing
surprise group stage draws with Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay. The defender,
who scored a last-gasp equaliser in the first of those games, said: "The
World Cup was a life-changing experience and something I will remember
forever. I want to bring the positives from that here on the pitch at West
Ham."He added: "This club has a great history and the league is one of the
best in the world. I am looking forward to the challenge ahead."
Reid is the Hammers' fifth summer signing, following in the footsteps of
Thomas Hitzlsperger, Pablo Barrera, Frederic Piquionne and Tal Ben Haim.
Reid, who can play centre-half or right-back, spent the last five seasons
with Midtjylland and cannot wait to test himself in the Barclays Premier
League. "I am looking forward to getting started," he told his club's
official website, www.whufc.com. "My dream has been to come and play in the
Premier League and I am happy that I am a West Ham player. "It has been a
mad couple of weeks and the last couple of days have been pretty hectic, so
I am just happy to be here now. I am pretty decent fitness-wise. I had a
game last Sunday so I am in pretty good nick."
Reid, who is of Maori heritage, moved to Denmark at the age of 10 and
represented them up to under-21 level before switching allegiance to his
native New Zealand shortly before the World Cup.

Stoke's Remy move collapses - Exclusive
Published 22:30 05/08/10 By Alan Nixon
The Mirror

Big-spending Stoke City's swoop for French striker Loic Remy is on the rocks
- after a flying visit to the Potteries ended in a break-down over the fee
and terms. Remy met boss Tony Pulis who flew out to Nice by private jet to
see him and brought the highly-rated hit man back for a look at his
potential new club.
Pulis - backed by super-rich supremo Peter Coates - hoped that Remy will
agree to come to Stoke despite rival interest from West Ham and Liverpool
with his direct approach putting him in front of the race. However despite
shaking hands with Pulis and signing autographs for the fans Remy was
shocked to find that the clubs could not agree a price for him or come up
with a suitable pay package. Remy has just been picked for the France squad
for a pre-season friendly after their World Cup flops were banned and he was
impressed by the Stoke hard sell until it came to money. Meanwhile Stoke are
still in the hunt for West Ham's England international Carlton Cole and will
make a renewed bid for him once the Remy move is resolved - with Pulis keen
to have both on board.
Cole will be sold by the Hammers who need to let him go to finance their own
moves for a top forward. Stoke have moved ahead of them for Remy, leaving
Everton's Yakubu as their next choice to come in.
Meanwhile Stoke have also made an inquiry for Sunderland's Kenwyne Jones,
but the Trinidad and Tobago striker is only seen as an alternative if Remy
and Cole do not arrive at the Britannia Stadium.

Do We Still Need to buy a Pacy goal scorer?
West Ham Till I Die

Do we still need to bring in another attacker? Is there a case that we need
to acquire a pacy forward that can attack from deep, give intelligent
support to Cole (or whoever is at the apex of the attack) and weigh in with
c.15 goals a season?

On a previous WHTID thread there was a debate about whether Craig Bellamy
would be welcomed back to the club by fans, if a return was on the cards.
And one thing is certain, we have not had a player with that pace, mobility
and finishing ability since he left to join Man City. Whilst with the club,
Bellamy was crucial in allowing us to play a fast, counter-attacking game
that proved highly effective, especially away from home.

Remember the ritual slaughter of Reading at the Majeski and Portsmouth, at
Fratton Park? The speed and decisive counter-attacking from deep, in those
matches, was a thing of clinical beauty that we have since patently failed
to emulate. And Bellamy was integral to the success of that playing style.

It is clear that Avram Grant has consciously sought to inject pace into the
forward line with the purchase of Barrera and Piquionne. These additions
supplemented the existing pace potentially provided by the likes of
Stanislas, Faubert and Hines.

With Noble and Parker anchoring the midfield and providing defensive cover,
the three forwards supporting Cole will be crucial next season. There is a
place for the experience, skill and shooting ability of Hitzlsperger or
Diamanti. But we also need to ensure that pace and clinical finishing, in
the final third, is present within this crucial bloc of three. Barrera,
Stanislas, Dyer, Piquionne and Hines are all candidates to provide this.
But will they score enough goals?

I feel that a Bellamy or Remy could be the missing peice of the jigsaw that
would complete our forward line. Agreement or dissent?

SJ. Chandos.
