Nouble at the double

Frank Nouble scored twice as England began the UEFA European U19 Championship with a win over Austria
18.07.2010

Frank Nouble scored twice as England began their UEFA European Under-19 Championship challenge with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Austria. Nouble netted twice within the opening half-hour at the Stade du Haze in the northern French town of Flers to give Noel Blake's side the perfect start to their campaign.
The West Ham United youngster is hoping to become the second Hammer to lift a European title this summer following Robert Hall's success with England at the UEFA European U17 Championship in May. The 18-year-old ensured the U19s have a chance to do just that by firing in the Three Lions' first goal on 13 minutes, finishing confidently with his left foot past Austria goalkeeper Philip Petermann. Nouble and his country's second came 16 minutes later when the No11 showed great opportunism and confidence to latch on to a pass from Matthew Briggs and get clear of defender Gernot Trauner before slotting past Petermann.
Although David Alaba pulled a goal back for the Austrians seven minutes after the break, England reinstated their two-goal advantage through Arsenal defender Thomas Cruise three minutes later. Austria threatened a dramatic late comeback when Trauner scored on 73 minutes and goalkeeper Declan Rudd was forced to turn Alaba's long-range free-kick on to the crossbar moments later, but England held on. Blake's youngsters continue their Group B challenge by facing Netherlands in Bayeux at 5pm UK time on Wednesday before completing their group-stage commitments by taking on France in St-Lo on Saturday, with kick-off again at 5pm UK time. Both matches will be screened live by British Eurosport.

Groves upbeat on WHUTV
WHUFc.com
'A good afternoon's work' was how Paul Groves described the weekend win against VfL Borussia Monchengladbach
18.07.2010

Paul Groves declared himself more than satisfied after West Ham United's weekend win against VfL Borussia Monchengladbach kicked off the Germany training camp in the right way. The club's new senior coach was happy to see the team score two good goals, keep a clean sheet and deal with several substitutions in the 2-0 defeat of the Bundesliga side on Saturday. It was a victory that helped maintain morale, after the first two weeks of pre-season training had done much already to foster a positive spirit around the squad. Talking to WHUTV, Groves said: "It went very well overall. There was a lot of changes and it has given the manager a couple of games now to have a look at people's strengths and what they can do - seeing them in different systems and positions. It has been very informative in terms of seeing what the players can do. "There are a number of players that had longer term injuries so we have to be careful with those. We don't want to lose them. It is important at this stage of the season that we get fit players and we don't want to overload them. They don't have to be fit next week, we are looking at 14 August. "People might have played 25-30 minutes and others have played longer, at maybe 60 minutes. They have all come through to date in good shape which is important. "There is a very good atmosphere and some fantastic staff members at this club that work together incredibly well and hard. They probably don't get the recognition that they deserve and the players have been fantastic. It has been a pleasure to be part of that environment and long may that continue."

That upbeat assessment also extended to the fans, with Groves having been impressed in his first month at the club with the level of their backing. "We are looking forward to playing for the fans and the reputation with regard to the numbers [that travel] and the way they get behind the team.
"They have good knowledge of football. Credit to them for travelling out, it is fantastic. Hopefully we can give them a couple of good results this pre-season."

Sunday service for squad
WHUFC.com
Frederic Piquionne and his new team-mates were at work again but the emphasis was on recovery for most
18.07.2010

West Ham United were having anything but a day of rest on Sunday although the players were given full chance to recover from the exertions against VfL Borussia Monchengladbach. The squad were split into two groups with the focus on regeneration work. While one group stretched in the swimming pool, the other half were in the gym for light work on the bikes and treadmills. They then swapped places as the morning progressed. Meanwhile, new recruit Frederic Piquionne was put through his paces out on the training pitch. The France striker, who had a watching brief for Saturday's 2-0 defeat of Monchengladbach in Ruhpolding, was accompanied by Scott Parker and Alessandro Diamanti and others who had limited game time in the match. There was light relief with the cooler temperatures, though. The previous night's rain had disappeared but the sky was still overcast as Paul Groves and Kevin Keen worked. Manager Avram Grant has been delighted with the work so far during an eight-day training camp that will culminate with a fixture against Greek title-winners and UEFA Champions League contenders Panathinaikos on Friday. The positive peaceful surrounds on the German-Austrian border have been matched by the morale of a squad that has been in high spirits since arriving. He said: "The facilities are good. The place is very nice but we came here to train for football and we hope to have a good eight days. The players have a lot of passion and there is a good atmosphere. "It is good to have Scott back with us. He is a great person and player. We need him and the other players that will come next week from their national teams and also the new signings. We are trying to mix between experienced players and the young talented players."

Talking of new signings, Piquionne's presence has been welcomed by all while everyone is waiting to meet Mexico attacker Pablo Barrera. Grant said fans could look forward to some inventive play from the new men. "Barera is a winger, a creative player who knows how to play well from the side. He has good crossing, good dribbling and is quick. He is a player who can play well for us. Freddie has scored in important games, he is good and quick as well. He is good with his head and it is great to have another striker."

Later on Sunday, the squad will take part in a team-building activity away from the hotel before many may choose to watch Frank Nouble in action for England against Austria at the 2010 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. The match, the Young Lions' first of this summer's finals, will be broadcast live on Eurosport this evening.

Borussia Monchengladbach 0 West Ham Utd 2

West Ham opened their pre-season tour with an impressive win over German Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in Ruhpolding. Avram Grant's side, fresh from the 2-1 success at Peterborough on Wednesday night made it two wins in four days with a comfortable 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Carlton Cole and Benni McCarthy at the Waldstadion. Captain-for-the-day Cole put United ahead on the half-hour when he headed home a Freddie Sears cross from close range. Just six minutes into the second half, McCarthy - who returned to pre-season training before the rest of the squad in an attempt to regain the match fitness that was so clearly lacking last season - fired home a volley from an acute angle after soom good work by Julien Faubert on the right flank. All in all there were run-outs for a whole host of players although new signings Frederic Piquionne and Pablo Barrera were not involved. The French striker is however expected to feature againt Panathinaikos next Friday in the second and final game of the tour, whilst Barrera is currently back in Mexico and unlikely to feature until the final game of pre-season against Deportivo at the Boleyn on August 7th. A number of first team squad players - including the likes of Scott Parker, Matthew Upson and Robert Green - missed last night's game but will join up with the rest of the squad ahead of the meeting with the Greek champions, full details of which will be brought to you by KUMB.com.

Gladbach fume at striker blow
Bobadilla sidelined with ankle damage
Last updated: 18th July 2010

Borussia Monchengladbach manager Michael Frontzeck was unhappy with the challenge that damaged Raul Bobadilla's ankle in Saturday's friendly. Gladbach lost 2-0 to Premier League outfit West Ham, although it was the ankle ligament damage suffered by the Argentinian striker that Frontzeck bemoaned the most.
Bobadilla hobbled out of the match on 40 minutes after being caught and the 23-year-old is now expected to be unable to train for the next four weeks. "At this early stage of preparations, the point of playing friendlies is to build certain elements into your game. They're actually training sessions under competitive conditions," explained Frontzeck. "So it's very annoying to have now lost two players inside five days this week due to injuries caused by overzealous tackling in warm-up matches. "Patrick Hermann was on the end of one in Echt on Tuesday, against West Ham it was Raul Bobadilla. "Fouls from the side or from behind, as was the case in both instances, should actually be punished with a red card... I say to my players before a friendly that I don't want to see that sort of thing.
"I expect our opponents to take the same approach and if that's not the case, I expect the referee to take appropriate action."

Piquionne targets best return
Hammers new boy hoping to be among the goals
Last updated: 19th July 2010

Frederic Piquionne admits he may not be the most prolific striker, but believes he will get goals. The Frenchman has recently completed a move from Lyon to West Ham, reacquainting him with Avram Grant. The 31-year-old worked with the Israeli coach at Portsmouth last season, as he took in a season-long loan deal at Fratton Park. He did enough during that spell to convince Grant that he is capable of competing in the Premier League after scoring 11 goals in all competitions. Piquionne is now looking to better that return in 2010/11, despite admitting that he will never be a forward in the same mould as a Wayne Rooney or Fernando Torres. "My best characteristics are I'm good in the air, I'm quick and I try to keep the ball," he said. "I'm not the most prolific striker, like maybe Fernando Torres or Wayne Rooney, but I think I can score many goals. "I know English football now and I can score more goals than ever before."

Nice to settle Remy future
Reds could pip Hammers to France ace
Last updated: 18th July 2010

Nice president Gilbert Stellardo says Liverpool will jump to the head of the queue for Loic Remy if they match West Ham's offer. The Hammers have matched Nice's€10million (£8.4m) asking price for the 23-year-old, but their instalment proposal is not to the club's liking. Stellardo says the club are happy with the value of West Ham's offer, although Liverpool will be in pole position should they match their rival's bid. Nice have no qualms cashing in on the France international, but insist they will require all the money up front and will not settle for an instalment plan. Remy is one of France's hottest properties having scored 15 goals in 33 appearances last season and Tottenham are also rivalling Liverpool and West Ham for his services. "For the moment it's the same status quo, but if Liverpool make an offer things will be done swiftly," he told L'Equipe. "The amount (offered by West Ham) suits me but not the payment method.
"West Ham want to buy Loic because they think he could rapidly be worth €10million more if he plays in England. They don't want us to pay the full sum all at once."

Boca keen to tie down Riquelme
Hammers target looks set to stay in Argentina
Last updated: 18th July 2010

Boca Juniors coach Claudio Borghi is hoping to strike a deal to re-sign West Ham target Juan Roman Riquelme. Riquelme is currently out of contract after spending the last three years at the Buenos Aires-based club and has been tipped for a move to the Premier League. But Borghi, who took over at Boca in June, claims discussions are under way to re-sign the talented former Argentina number 10. "The club directors are negotiating with him," the coach told Argentinian sports paper Ole from Australia, where the club are currently on a pre-season tour. "I would like to be able to enjoy watching him play in my team. "If you can make me enjoy myself, I will put you in the team every week."
Riquelme has been linked with Everton and Tottenham in recent years, while there has been interest from West Ham and Brazilian club Flamengo this summer.
However, the 31-year-old insists his preferred choice is to remain at Boca and believes an agreement could have been reached a long time ago. "I'm a Boca fan and I'll die a Boca fan - I want to stay at Boca," the former Villarreal playmaker told Fox Sports. "The only thing I am asking for is a contract for four years. If they had wanted to, they could have sorted this out two months ago."
Riquelme has also attracted interested from Racing Club, but the player, who has refused to turn out for Argentina under Diego Maradona, says he would not sign for any other club in his homeland. "I am grateful for their interest," he said. "I have a very good relationship with (Racing coach) Miguel (Russo), but I won't play with another shirt in Argentina."
That leaves the route clear for Boca and Borghi believes an agreement will be reached soon. "Since I took over at Boca, the only time I have spoken to Roman was at Pilar (where the club have a training facility), but I am confident everything can be sorted out soon," he said.

Manchester City are snapping up super spy Christian Lattanzio from West Ham - on the advice of England boss Fabio Capello. The Italian has joined City as one of their senior recruitment officers after leaving his post at Upton Park where he had risen from community officer to a senior role behind the scenes. Lattanzio was at the World Cup as part of Capello's massive backroom staff and watched the opposition teams and systems for his long-term friend. Now Capello has tipped off City about Lattanzio who will try to help the mega-rich outfit improve on their scouting as they look to spend their millions.

I'm no Wayne Rooney' says West Ham new boy Piquionne
Published 23:00 18/07/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Frederic Piquionne has warned West Ham fans: "I'm no Wayne Rooney". The former Portsmouth striker put pen to paper on a three-year deal on Friday after agreeing a move from French club Lyon. Piquionne, who scored 11 goals for Pompey last season, was a key part of the side which reached the FA Cup final under now Hammers boss Avram Grant. The 31-year-old flew out to join his new team-mates at their German training base on Friday and is looking set to challenge the likes of Carlton Cole and Benni McCarthy for a place in the starting line up. And although Piquionne is confident he can be a big hit at Upton Park, he says that fans should not compare him to the top strikers in the league such as United's Rooney or the prolific Fernando Torres. "As a player, I think my best characteristics are that I'm good in the air, I'm quick and I try to keep the ball," he said. "I'm not the most prolific striker, like maybe Fernando Torres or Wayne Rooney, but I think I can score many goals. "I know English football now and I know I can score many goals this year. I think with the players I'll have around me, here I can score more goals than ever before."
Boss Grant has a whole host of strikers to choose from with youngsters Zavon Hines, Frank Nouble and Cristian Montano all challenging the elder statesmen.
But Piquionne says the extra competition will bring out the best in him and his fellow forwards. He added: "Competition for places is a good thing. The club needs strikers to score goals and I think all the strikers in this club are very good."

Stoke City prepare ambitious £8 million bid to acquire West Ham United striker Carlton Cole - report
18 Jul 2010 12:59:00
Goal.com

Stoke City look set to launch an ambitious swoop for West Ham United striker Carlton Cole, as they seek to inject some much needed firepower into their ranks before the season gets underway. According to The People, Potter's boss Tony Pulis is a keen admirer of Cole's talents and it is believed that Stoke chairman Peter Coates will provide a transfer budget of £8 million to land his man. The England international has looked sharp in pre-season training despite recent knee problems, and Stoke are said to be keen on clarifying the extent of the injury before making a concrete bid. Pulis is also thought to be chasing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Bentley, although it's speculated he is fighting a losing battle, as the former Blackburn Rovers man favours a move to Aston Villa.
However, Stoke should have more joy in trying to persuade Ivory Coast left-back Siaka Tiene to the Britannia Stadium. The 28-year-old plays for French side Valenciennes but wants to come to England, and following his displays at World Cup 2010, he's alerted several European clubs into acquiring his services.
The versatile performer, who can also act as a holding midfielder, is thought to be valued in the region of £1.2m. Pulis is also ready to offload James Beattie in a bid to see the problematic striker rekindle his career elsewhere, after failing to reconcile their differences following a dressing room bust-up last season. However, Pulis is only willing to let Beattie leave for around £1.5m.

Remy set for Nice talks
By Soccernet staff
July 18, 2010
ESPN

Nice president Gilbert Stellardo will hold talks with striker Loic Remy on Monday as they await an offer from Liverpool. Liverpool, Tottenham and West Ham - along with a number of Ligue 1 sides - are all understood to be tracking Remy, 23, but there has yet to be an agreeme nt with Nice. West Ham are unwilling to pay the transfer fee in a single payment as Nice require and, while Liverpool are said to have agreed a five-year deal with the player, they are yet to make an offer. "For the moment we're stuck with the status quo, but if (Liverpool make an offer) things will be done swiftly," Stellardo told L'Equipe. "The amount (offered by West Ham) suits me but not the payment method. West Ham want to buy Loic because they think he could rapidly be worth €10 million more if he plays in England. They don't want to pay us the full sum all at once."
Stellardo also revealed Nice are eager to bring Middlesbrough midfielder Didier Digard back to the club. Digard spent time on loan at Nice earlier this year with an option to sign him permanently for €5 million euros, and the clubs are now negotiating a new agreement for next season. "We've talked to Middlesbrough about a new loan but with an option to purchase at a cheaper price," he said.

However, Liverpool are struggling to offload players to finance a deal and manager Roy Hodgson says he has yet to make judgement on Remy.

Graham Dorrans snubs West Ham and pens new West Brom contract to deal Avram Grant's rebuilding work a Hammer blow
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER Last updated at 8:47 AM on 19th July 2010
Daily Mail

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Graham Dorrans has rejected interest from West Ham and put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at the Hawthorns.
The Scotland international only signed a new deal back in January but his stock has risen after starring in the Baggies' promotion-winning campaign last season. The news will deal a huge blow to new Hammers boss Avram Grant, who is trying to overhaul a squad that narrowly escaped relegation from the Barclays Premier League last term. Dorrans was swiftly identified by the Hammers as a key target after securing top-flight survival, but West Brom rebuffed three bids for the star and have now secured their man until 2015, with the option of a further 12 months. Manager Roberto Di Matteo told the club's offcial website: 'I'm delighted Graham has signed a new long-term contract, which is fully deserved. 'He made excellent progress last season and we're now very hopeful he can make the step up to the Premier League.
'There has been a lot of media speculation about Graham's future, but it hasn't affected him one bit. 'Ever since he has reported back for pre-season training, his attitude has been as spot on as it always is and I know for a fact how much he's looking forward to the new season. 'The exciting thing is that Graham knows he still has a lot of work to do and is yet to reach his full potential.' Sporting technical director Dan Ashworth added: 'We only rewarded Graham with a new contract in January, which tied him to the club until June 2014. 'But his form got even better during the last few months of the season and we have recognised this by offering him an improved and extended deal.'

Hammers win again
WHUFC.com
Carlton Cole and Benni McCarthy both scored in what was a polished
performance in Germany
17.07.2010

VfL Borussia Monchengladbach 0-2 West Ham United

Two superb goals from Carlton Cole and Benni McCarthy gave the Hammers a
fine victory in the picturesque town of Ruhpolding on Saturday night.
Cheered on by a loyal band of travelling Hammers near the German-Austrian
border, Avram Grant's side were always on top on what was a competitive
encounter. Carlton Cole was the captain for the day and he made it two goals
from two matches with a fine header before McCarthy struck a fantastic
volleyed second - his first in claret and blue - soon after the interval.

It made it two wins from two this pre-season after last Wednesday's 2-1 win
at Peterborough United while there was also the positive of a strong opening
45 minutes from Kieron Dyer and the midfield dominance of Mark Noble and
Thomas Hitzlsperger. James Tomkins played the longest of any of the Hammers
with 81 minutes at the heart of the defence and excelled throughout.

The match will have made for interesting viewing for new recruit Frederic
Piquionne, who met his team-mates for the first time in Saturday morning's
light training session, and Scott Parker. The Hammer of the Year only began
his pre-season this week after his England exertions. The squad will be
boosted by Monday's arrival of Robert Green, Jonathan Spector, Matthew Upson
and Valon Behrami.

Pablo Barrera, meanwhile, is back in Mexico for a couple of days before
returning to London. The Hammers will continue their training camp over the
coming week before taking on Greek champions Panathinaikos in Kitzbuhel next
Friday. The pre-season fixtures will culminate with a glamour home friendly
against RC Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday 7 August.

Former Hammers schoolboy Matt Bodkin was Thurrock's hero at Ship Lane on
Saturday
17.07.2010

Thurrock 1-0 West Ham United XI

A youthful West Ham United XI fell to a narrow pre-season friendly defeat at
Blue Square South side Thurrock on Saturday afternoon. Matt Bodkin, who had
a spell within the Hammers Academy as a schoolboy, was the hosts'
match-winner, unleashing an unstoppable long-range volley past Sam Cowler at
Ship Lane.
Substitutes Danny Subuola, Danny Purdy and Callum McNaughton all came close
to snatching a draw for Alex Dyer's side, while Thurrock's Craig Pope saw a
25-yard strike cannon back off the crossbar. With traffic on the nearby M25
at a standstill, defenders Paco Craig and McNaughton were delayed, meaning
Sergio Sanchez partnered Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson at the heart of the back
four. Filip Modelski and Jordan Brown filled the full-back positions. In
front of them, Olly Lee, Eoin Wearen and George Moncur made up a three-man
midfield, with Jack Werndly, Ahmed Abdulla and Robert Hall interchanging in
attack. Lee and Moncur were first to threaten for the visitors, but neither
could keep their long-range shots on target before Hall saw his effort
deflected into the arms of goalkeeper Joe Woolley. As so often happens in
football, the opening goal arrived totally against the run of play, with
Thurrock scoring with virtually their first attack of the game. When the
ball broke to Bodkin 30 yards from goal, he took a touch and sent a wicked
volley that looped agonisingly over Cowler and into the net in spectacular
fashion. Hall nearly replied within a minute, only to drag his shot a yard
wide after a neat turn on the edge of the penalty area.
Moncur and Lee were both seeing plenty of possession as the half wore on,
and the two sons of famous fathers almost combined to level the scores on 27
minutes, only for Woolley to save smartly after Lee had latched on to
Moncur's brilliant through ball.

Half-time saw Dyer make no fewer than six changes, with Craig and McNaughton
among those to be handed a second-half run out. The manager also switched
from a 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 formation. West Ham should have been level within
two minutes of the restart when the alert Werndly robbed Woolley before
feeding Subuola. The striker had just centre-back Rob Swaine to beat from 12
yards, only for the defender to block his low shot. Thurrock nearly made the
most of their let-off twice in the space of five minutes a short time later.
First Reiss Gilbey could only stab a cross from the lively Ryan Andrews
narrowly wide of the far post, then right-back Craig Pope strode forward
before shaking Deniz Mehmet's crossbar with a well-struck shot from 25
yards. Mehmet then took an accidental whack to the face that necessitated
lengthy treatment and a change of shirt before the Turkey U18 international
could continue. Dyer's youngsters continued to plug away, but could not find
a way past a staunch Thurrock rearguard, with the sliding Pope denying
Subuola what looked to be a certain goal with a well-timed block. Republic
of Ireland U17 forward Purdy curled a free-kick narrowly wide before Mehmet
showed no ill-effects from his earlier injury to deny substitute Paul Olima
with a superb save. Into the final ten minutes and Purdy came within a
whisker of snatching a draw for the Hammers, only to see his set piece curl
inches wide of the target with Woolley stranded. Moments later, Purdy's
corner landed on the head of McNaughton, only for the flame-haired defender
to see his effort loop just past the post. The reserves will return to
action on Saturday, when Dyer will take a side up the M1 to face League Two
side Burton Albion, with kick-off at 3pm.

West Ham United XI: Cowler (Mehmet 46), Modelski (Driver 46), Eyjolfsson
(Purdy 68), Sanchez, Brown, Wearen (McNaughton 46), Moncur (Vose 46), Lee,
Abdulla (Subuola 46), Hall (Craig 46), Werndly

"The French League is a great league but I know that I'm wanted in England

London Road, handing a debut to new signing Thomas Hitzlsperger. Goals
either side of half-time from Carlton Cole and Anthony Edgar were enough to
give the new manager a successful start to his reign.
. Young professionals Matt Fry, Olly Lee and Edgar have all signed new
contracts with the club and will hope to impress the new manager this
season. Defender Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson will also be eager to push on after
spending the second half of last season on loan at Belgian side KSV
Roeselare.
. A number of players have departed from West Ham since the end of the
2009/10 season. Josh Payne, Bondz N'Gala, Ilan, Guille Franco, Davide
Ferrari, Danny Kearns, Terry Dixon and Tony Brookes have all departed after
their respective contracts expired, while Mido's short-term loan from
Middlesbrough was not renewed.
. Grant's side will kick-off their Premier League campaign with a trip to
Aston Villa on Saturday 14 August.

Borussia Monchengladbach

. Borussia Monchengladbach finished the 2009/10 Bundesliga season in 12th
place, having gathered 39 points from 34 matches.
. Borussia are coached by former Borussia Monchengladbach, VfB Stuttgart,
Manchester City and Germany defender Michael Frontzeck. The 46-year-old took
charge at Borussia-Park in June 2009.
. The club won five Bundesliga titles in the space of eight seasons between
1969/70 and 1976/77. During the so-called 'Golden Decade' in the club's
history, Borussia also reached the European Cup final in 1977, losing to
Liverpool, won the UEFA Cup in both 1975 and 1979 and also reached the UEFA
Cup final twice more. During their 1970s heyday, Borussia also achieved a
Bundesliga record 12-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in April 1978.
. Borussia made a fine start to their own pre-season schedule, defeating
local league sides FC Ottenstein (9-0), SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 (4-0) and
Wegberg-Beeck (5-0) without conceding a goal.
. On Tuesday evening, Borussia took on Dutch outfit EVV Echt and were beaten
2-1. Brazilian defender Dante scored the German side's goal.
. Borussia had two representatives at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South
Africa, both of whom faced England. Michael Bradley was an ever-present in
the United States midfield in their four matches, while attacker Karim
Matmour started all three of Algeria's Group C fixtures. New signing Mo
Idrissou was also a member of the Cameroon squad before joining Borussia
earlier this month.
. Former Tottenham Hotspur full-back Paul Stalteri, who scored the dramatic
late winner in Spurs' 4-3 Premier League win at the Boleyn Ground in March
2007 - a result that sparked the Hammers' 'Great Escape' from relegation -
is also a member of the Borussia squad.
. Borussia have signed Cameroon forward Mo Idrissou from Bundesliga rivals
SC Freiburg. The 30-year-old appeared in all three of his country's
group-stage fixtures at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
. Frontzeck's side will begin their Bundesliga campaign with a home match
against 1. FC Nurnberg on the weekend of 21/22 August.

Team news
. West Ham United will be without their four representatives at the 2010
FIFA World Cup - England's Robert Green and Matthew Upson, Switzerland's
Valon Behrami and the United States' Jonathan Spector - as well as Scott
Parker, who returned to training this week after spending the early part of
his summer with England's provisional World Cup squad. Frederic Piquionne
will also not play after joining up with the squad for training on Saturday.
. Fabio Daprela could figure after missing Wednesday's trip to Peterborough
United with a twisted ankle suffered in training.
. Jack Collison and Young Hammer of the Year Zavon Hines will be unavailable
as both continue their recovery from long-term knee injuries.
. Thomas Hitzlsperger will be on familiar ground, as the German spent the
past five years at VfB Stuttgart before a brief stay with S.S. Lazio earlier
this year.
. Frank Nouble will also be absent due to his commitments with England at
the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals in France, starting with
Sunday's game against Austria.
. Borussia could include new signing Mo Idrissou after the Cameroon
international forward completed a move from Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg.
General information
. The weather forecast is for a sunny day with a top temperature of around
27C.

Manager speaks on WHUTV

Barrera and Frederic Piquionne
17.07.2010
Avram Grant has given his first thoughts on new recruits Frederic Piquionne
and Pablo Barrera exclusively to WHUTV. Piquionne arrived in the early hours
of the morning before joining his new team-mates out on the training pitch
for a light session at 10am. He shook hands with everyone before the players
began with some ball work games where the squad were divided into two
groups. With two players at a time taking turns to be in the middle, the aim
was to do one-touch passing while keeping the ball away from them. Whoever
messed up then had to take their turn being in the centre. There was plenty
of banter as the pace quickened, while coaches Paul Groves and Kevin Keen
also got involved. After about 30 minutes, the players then went through
some stretching drills before Piquionne and Scott Parker - who only began
his pre-season work this week - were taken on a run around the grounds. The
others were free to go for a light lunch ahead of a couple hours' rest but a
few chose to stay out on the pitch for a little while longer - not least
Alessandro Diamanti and Thomas Hitzlsperger, with the two left-footers
whacking precision passes back and forth to each other across the pitch.

England boss slates Rob Green in controversial Capello Index
Published 12:13 17/07/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Fabio Capello has finally launched his controversial player rating system
the Capello Index - and the results won't make pleasant reading for
England's World Cup flops. The system awards players points in various
technical categories to come up with an overall rating out of 100. Jermain
Defoe was judged to have been England's top performer, with a score of
62.47, while blunder keeper Rob Green was the worst, earning a rating of
just 51.67. Capello judged Diego Forlan to be the player of the World Cup,
awarding the Uruguayan an average score of 65.77 for the tournament. The
England manager had originally planned to publish his player ratings live
throughout the World Cup - until he was convinced by the FA that that might
not actually be a very good idea .

Weekend work in Germany
WHUFC.com
Avram Grant and his squad are settling in to their training camp after
travelling out from London
17.07.2010

West Ham United are hard at work in Germany this weekend after a day of
travelling and settling in at their picturesque training camp in Bavaria.
The squad headed out from Heathrow on Friday morning with Scott Parker in
tow after his return from an extended break because of his England
exertions. The party arrived in Munich early in the afternoon where they
were met as they walked into the arrivals lounge by Alessandro Diamanti. The
forward had been back in Italy for a few days with his wife on paternity
leave.

As well as the regular members of the first-team squad, the party was also
boosted by the presence of Matthew Fry, Cristian Montano and Anthony Edgar -
who had all figured in the 2-1 win at Peterborough United on Wednesday. Once
some typical Friday afternoon traffic had been negotiated, the Hammers
pulled into their training base and were almost immediately ready to go.

The squad all had a light meal before reconvening on the excellent training
pitch adjoined to the hotel. The early part of the session saw them
loosening up after the flight before but it was not long before the
intensity picked up, despite the early evening temperature remaining in the
mid 30s. Paul Groves and Kevin Keen were barking out the orders in constant
consultation with the manager as David Coles put Marek Stech and Peter
Kurucz through their paces.

Robert Green will arrive on Monday along with fellow World Cup performers
Jonathan Spector, Mathew Upson and Valon Behrami. Meanwhile, new French
striker Frederic Piquionne touched down in Munich overnight and was due to
meet his new team-mates later on Saturday. Pablo Barrera has gone back to
Mexico for a couple of days but news of his transfer was also well received.

Watch out later today on WHUTV for the first thoughts of manager Avram Grant
on his new recruits while our cameras will also catch up with all the other
behind the scenes news and views. The squad travel to Ruhpolding this
evening for the first friendly match of the German camp - against VfL
Borussia Monchengladbach.

West Ham sign Pablo Barrera and Frederic Piquionne
BBC.co.uk

West Ham manager Avram Grant has strengthened his attack with the signings
of Mexico winger Pablo Barrera and Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne. Barrera,
23, arrives for a fee of £4m on a four-year deal from UNAM Pumas after
impressing during the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. Piquionne, who
played for Grant on loan at Portsmouth last season, has signed a three-year
contract at Upton Park. West Ham have promised more signings over the next
three days.
Barrera made three substitute appearances for Mexico at the World Cup as
they advanced to the second round. The pacy wideman, who featured against
England in Mexico's 3-1 defeat in May, is nicknamed 'Dynamite' in his
homeland. "I have been really taken by the reception I have received from
the players and the manager," he said. "The fans can expect that I will give
100% to succeed for the team and to play better than I have ever played
before." France international Piquionne said: "I'm coming to work hard for
the squad and I hope we have a good season." Barrera and Piquionne are
Grant's second and third signings after Germany midfielder Thomas
Hitzlsperger arrived on a free transfer from Lazio.

Haim-mer

West Ham are set to complete another raid on relegated Portsmouth with the
capture of Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim, according to reports. Ben Haim, a
player linked with the Hammers since the end of last season is set to sign
on a free transfer having agreed terms, the details of which are unknown at
present. Debt-ridden Pompey are said to have been desperate to offload the
high-earning 28-year-old, who joined the south coast club via Bolton,
Chelsea and Manchester City.

The decision to sign Ben Haim may raise one or two eyebrows following
comments he made about current Irons boss Avram Grant in 2008, whilst both
were at Chelsea. Disenchanted by his lack of first team opportunities he
lashed out at his then-manager, saying: "If I knew Avram Grant was going to
be the coach I would have signed for another club. It was Jose who brought
me here ... I knew nothing good would come for me with Grant as Chelsea
coach."

The outburst resulted in Ben-Haim being fined two-weeks' wages by Chelsea,
with Grant retorting: "I don't think Jose promised Ben Haim he will play
before John Terry, Carvalho and Alex. It is internal business but, in my
opinion, if a player was wrong we need to deal with it - in our way, my
way."

Ben Haim - who can play at centre half or on the right side of defence -
left Chelsea at the end of that season when he joined Manchester City in a
deal worth £5million. However he was on his way to Sunderland just six
months later where he spent the remainder of the season on loan. At the end
of the 2008/09 season, the Israeli joined Portsmouth on a four-year deal.
Should the transfer go through as expected, West Ham will become Ben Haim's
sixth Premier League club in just over three years.

Barrera deal confirmed

Pablo Barrera's transfer to West Ham has been concluded. The tricky Mexican
winger's switch from Pumas to West Ham was confirmed a few moments ago by
the club, who announced that Barrera has signed a four-year contract with a
'one-year option'. The price for luring one of the stars of this summer's
World Cup Finals to east London is £4million. Talking to whufc.com, Barrera
revealed that he was delighted to have completed the move to United. "I am
very happy to sign for West Ham United and have been really taken by the
reception I have received from the players and the manager," he said. "I am
very excited about the opportunity and the possibilities of playing for West
Ham. I will do my best. The fans can expect that I will give 100 per cent to
succeed for the team and to play better than I have ever played before. "I
am very fast and can use both feet. I like the one-on-one situations and to
take on my opponent and beat my rivals. I like to excite the supporters.
People have said that I am the sort of player that the fans want to have the
ball as often as possible because I can make things happen."
West Ham fans will be hoping that Barrera will prove to be rather more
successful than last summer's high-profile South American arrival, Luis
Jimenez. The Chilean playmaker, signed on a season-long loan from Parma was
sent home just half-way through his season-long loan spell after proving to
be a major disappointment.

West Ham have confirmed their second signing of the day - former Portsmouth
striker Frederic Piquionne. The ex-Lyon forward follows Mexican winger Pablo
Barrera through the entrance doors at the Boleyn Ground after putting pen to
paper on a three-year contract. The 31-year-old once-capped Frenchman, who
worked with Avram Grant for the second half of the 2009/10 campaign was
something of a joke figure at Portsmouth when he initially joined on loan
last term but recovered under the tutelege of Grant to end the season with a
respectable 11 goals. Speaking to whufc.com this evening, Piquionne said:
"I'm very happy to sign for West Ham because my last manager was Avram. I am
looking forward to performing for West Ham and I hope to score many goals
for the club.

"The ambition here has to be to reach the top ten and maybe to win the
League Cup or the FA Cup. I played at Wembley last season, scored there, and
it is an amazing experience I would like to have again."
With regards to renewing acquaintances with the 55-year-old Israeli,
Piquionne added: "I like working with him and I think he likes me. I'm
coming to work hard for the squad and I hope we have a good season. "Avram
is a very, very good coach. Last year we had many problems at Portsmouth but
we got to the FA Cup final. He's a very good manager. As a player, it will
be good to just concentrate on my football. When I do that, I play well and
play with passion. We have the players here to have a very good season."

Skysports.com understands West Ham have agreed a deal to sign Portsmouth
defender Tal Ben-Haim. Portsmouth administrator Andrew Andronikou revealed
earlier this week West Ham were interested in signing the Israel
international, with cash-strapped Pompey keen to offload Ben-Haim. Ben Haim
was left behind as Portsmouth travelled to America for a pre-season tour so
that he could sort his future out. West Ham boss Avram Grant is a big
admirer of Ben-Haim and is keen to be reunited with the central defender,
but it was feared his personal demands could scupper the deal. However, a
compromise is believed to have been struck between both parties, paving the
way for Ben-Haim to make the switch to Upton Park.

his work at Pompey last term, and he is confident West Ham will enjoy a

Grant, now in charge at Upton Park. His arrival is also a signal that
Hammers captain Matthew Upson is on his way. The England centre-half has
still not signed a new three-year contract worth £65,000 a week and club
insiders say they are in the dark over his plans. Israeli Ben Haim, 28, has

West Ham have pulled off a treble transfer coup by signing Frederic

moved quickly to line up the new arrivals, who will cost around £7million in
total. The Israeli will team up again with on-loan Portsmouth striker
Piquionne after Lyon accepted a payment package for their much-travelled

double based on appearances – a deal rated as cheap by club owners David

Kop face nervous wait over Remy - even if Riera is sold
Published 23:00 16/07/10 By Alan Nixon
The Mirror

Liverpool are ready to sell Albert Riera to Greek club Olympiakos in a
£4million deal – to raise cash for Loic Remy. The Spanish left winger is
expected to speak to Olympiakos, who are offering big salaries to their new
players, although he would prefer to stay in England or return to Spain's La
Liga. Kop boss Roy Hodgson knows he has some 'disenchanted players' and
Riera, who fell out badly with former manager Rafa Benitez, is one of them.
But, rather than convince him to stay, a sale will help in the bid to land
Nice striker Remy. However the Anfield club still face a bizarre twist in
their £12m chase for Remy – because of a secret deal between Nice and Lyon.
Remy's old club Lyon let the striker go to Nice a couple of years ago but
demanded first option if he moved on. That would give Liverpool only a week
to agree a fee – and then wait to see if Lyon match it – before registering
the 23-year-old for the Europa League. Remy has dropped heavy hints that he
wants a move to Merseyside. But that will not stop Lyon from exercising the
strange clause to see if they can force him to change his mind.

Hammers complete Piquionne and Barrera double deal
Published 17:20 16/07/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

West Ham have made French striker Frederic Piquionne their second signing of
the day following the earlier arrival of Mexico winger Pablo Barrera.
Piquionne, who spent last season playing for new Hammers boss Avram Grant
while on loan at Portsmouth, has joined for an undisclosed fee from Lyon.
The 31-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Upton Park. Piquionne,
capped once by France, scored 11 goals in all competitions for Portsmouth,
with three of those coming in their run to the FA Cup final. "I am very
happy to sign for West Ham because my last manager was Avram," he told the
club's website. "I know Avram and I like working with him and I think he
likes me. I'm coming to work hard for the squad and I hope we have a good
season. "Avram is a very, very good coach. Last year we had many problems at
Portsmouth but we got to the FA Cup final. He's a very good manager. "As a
player, it will be good just to concentrate on my football. When I do that,
I play well and play with passion. We have the players here to have a very
good season."
Earlier, West Ham snapped up Mexico winger Barrera in a £4million deal with
Pumas. The 23-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Upton Park after
passing a medical and receiving his work permit yesterday. Barrera made
three appearances at the World Cup, all as a substitute, as Mexico made it
to the last 16. "I am very happy to sign for West Ham United and have been
really taken by the reception I have received from the players and the
manager," Barrera told the club's website. "I have had a great welcome. "I
knew about West Ham when I was in Mexico. They are a big club and I have
heard about the great players they have had in the past. I have heard a lot
more about the club and its traditions since I have been in London and I am
very excited to be here."

West Ham last month released Barrera's international team-mate Guillermo
Franco, who scored five goals in 21 appearances for the club. Barrera added
that he wanted to show off his pace to excite the Hammers faithful. "I am
very excited about the opportunity and possibilities of playing for West
Ham," he said. "I will do my best. The fans can expect that I will give 100%
to succeed for the team and to play better than I have every played before.
"I am very fast and can use both feet. I like the one-on-one situations and
to take on my opponent and beat my rivals. I like to excite the supporters.
"People have said that I am the sort of player that the fans want to have
the ball as often as possible because I can make things happen."
Today's arrivals take West Ham's intake of new players to three after the
signing of German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger. The club now say they hope
to make further additions "within the next 72 hours".

Transfer latest: 17 July

By: Staff Writer

West Ham's expected string of departures could begin this week following
news of interest from Greece in two first team squad members.

Since arriving at the club, Avram Grant has made three signings - soon to be
four - with none yet to leave. However that could change as early as next
week according to the Independent, who report that Olympiakos have enjoyed
fruitful meetings with Hammers chiefs with regards to signing Radoslav Kovac
and Alessandro Diamanti, both players thought to be surplus to requirements
at present. The two combined should fetch around £6million.

The hunt for a back-up option between the sticks is yet to be resolved but
the choice is thought to be down to just two players - Algerian
international Raïs M'Bolhi and young Dutch prospect Piet Velthuizen, who we
first told you about here.

M'Bolhi, who like our own Rob Green didn't exactly have a World Cup to
savour was reported by one Bulgarian sports agency to be in London for
discussions last week. The revelation was made by the owner of the M'Bolhi's
current club Slavia Sofia which lends the rumour a little more weight than
some. Velthuizen - who is in the final year of his contract with Vitesse -
said last week that "going to West Ham would be like a dream". Good lad.

There's little to report on the Neymar front, although news of United's
interest was surprisingly blamed for the 18-year's sub-standard performance
during a game earlier this week. A disgruntled Santos manager, speaking
after the game told reporters: "The transfer is not my decision; his father
is in talks over his future with other clubs" - so maybe there's still
another twist in this one (though with the figures bandied about we won't be
holding our breath).

News of Liverpool's interest in French youngster Loic Remy appeared to come
as a complete surprise to new Reds manager Roy Hodgson, who yesterday ruled
out a move for the Nice striker when he confessed that the player was not on
his immediate radar, despite apparently having been tracked by Liverpool for
a number of years. Tottenham's purported interest was news to everyone and
is more likely to be the work of an impatient agent looking to strike a
deal.

West Ham are still thought to be interested in signing Remy despite landing
Frederic Piquionne less than 24 hours ago - and having thus far refused to
meet Nice's demands. However the latest from L'Equipe suggests that Hodgson
may be playing a crafty game of bluff, with a suggestion that Liverpool's
interest is indeed real.

Meanwhile, Scott Parker continues to be loosely linked to Aston Villa, who
are rumoured to be impatient to spend the money they will receive from
Manchester City for the impending sale of James Milner. Although the KUMB
Player of the Year has been cited as the one player the club will not sell,
with Parker's stock currently at its peak the opportunity to cash in could
be too strong to refuse should the offer approach the £15million mark.

Carlton Cole, who featured at Peterborough on Wednesday night remains firmly
in the 'at risk' category but at present nobody has been willing to meet
West Ham's valuation, once again thought to be in the region of £15million.

One player now off the list of potential signings is Steve Sidwell, who has
joined Fulham in a 'snub' to the Hammers. That's according to the Daily
Mail, who add that the flame-haired midfielder has signed a two-year deal at
Craven Cottage.

West Ham United complete third signing of the day as Portsmouth defender Tal
Ben-Haim makes move - report
16 Jul 2010 23:39:00
Goal.com

West Ham United have agreed a deal with Portsmouth for defender Tal Ben-Haim
to join the Upton Park club, according to the Daily Mail. Reports suggest
that a conflict concerning wages held up the deal with an offer of £30,000 a
week from West Ham supposedly being £8,000 short of what the defender was
receiving at Portsmouth. With the dispute appearing to be resolved, however,
the 28-year-old is set to join up with the Hammers for the forthcoming
season.
After Portsmouth's relegation from the Premier League last term, reports
suggest the Israeli defender is heading back to top flight football and has
already joined the Hammers. If reports are to be believed, Ben-Haim will be
playing alongside former team-mate Frederic Piquionne and Mexico winger
Pablo Barrera - who were both confirmed as new signings at Upton Park on
Friday.

West Ham have paid Mexican club Pumas £4million for Barrera and have the
option to sign the 23-year-old for a further year. Piquionne has signed a
three year contract for an undisclosed fee after leaving French club Lyon
and will link up once more with manager Grant who were both at Portsmouth
last season.
Premier League trio target free agent Dan Gosling The two new recruits are
the London club's second and third signings of the season after the London
club secured the services of Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger who made
his debut in the 2-1 friendly win over Colchester United. "I am very happy
to sign for West Ham because my last manager was Avram," Piquionne told the
club's website.
We have the players here to have a very
good season. "The ambition here has to be to reach the top 10 and maybe to
win the League Cup or the FA Cup," Piquionne said. Earlier Barrera, who
featured three times for Mexico at the World Cup in South Africa, made his
arrival after being granted a British work permit on Thursday. "I am very
happy to sign for West Ham United and have been really taken by the
reception I have received from the players and the manager," Barrera said.
"I have had a great welcome. "I knew about West Ham when I was in Mexico.
They are a big club and I have heard about the great players they have had
in the past. I have heard a lot more about the club and its traditions since
I have been in London and I am very excited to be here."

West Ham, who finished one place above the relegation zone last season begin
their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on Aug 14, and said
"further major additions" should be announced in the coming days.

Daily WHUFC News - Two New Signings

Barrera signs
WHUFC.com
Mexico forward Pablo Barrera has expressed his excitement at joining West
Ham United
16.07.2010

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of Mexico FIFA World
Cup star Pablo Barrera. The winger, who turned 23 on 21 June, has moved to
the Boleyn Ground from Mexican Premier Division side Club Universidad
Nacional (Pumas de la UNAM) on a four-year contract with a one-year option
for fee of £4m. Following the arrival of Barrera, the club hopes to announce
two further signings within the next few hours. Details will be exclusively
announced first on whufc.com Barrrera, who becomes the second new recruit
this summer after Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, was able to
complete his move after passing a medical and having his work permit
application accepted by the Home Office on Thursday. He put pen to paper on
Friday morning before giving his first interview as a Hammers player to
whufc.com "I am very happy to sign for West Ham United and have been really
taken by the reception I have received from the players and the manager," he
said. "I have had a great welcome. "I knew about West Ham when I was in
Mexico. They are a big club and I have heard about the great players they
have had in the past. I have heard a lot more about the club and its
traditions since I have been in London and I am very excited to be here."
A fearless player blessed with great pace and elusive skills, Barrera is
planning to get the fans on their feet. I am very excited about the
opportunity and the possibilities of playing for West Ham. I will do my
best. The fans can expect that I will give 100 per cent to succeed for the
team and to play better than I have ever played before. "I am very fast and
can use both feet. I like the one-on-one situations and to take on my
opponent and beat my rivals. I like to excite the supporters. People have
said that I am the sort of player that the fans want to have the ball as
often as possible because I can make things happen."

Barrera expressed his excitement at playing in the Premier League and said
he has joined West Ham to succeed and to win trophies. "For sure, I think it
is possible for us to win trophies. I want to do my best and to succeed at
this club. It would be great to win some trophies here. I am very excited
about the possibilities with West Ham and excited about working with the new
manager and the team. My goal is to win my place in the team with my skills,
to show the fans that I will do my best for West Ham and to win a title with
West Ham."

Considered to be one of the brightest young prospects in world football,
Barrera appeared three times for his country at the recent World Cup in
South Africa. Before that he turned in an eye-catching 37-minute cameo off
the bench as Mexico lost 3-1 to England at Wembley in May. Blessed with
great pace, two good feet, the ability to beat his marker with ease and an
eye for goal, the Tlalnepantla-born player is nicknamed 'Dynamite' in his
homeland. Domestically, Barrera spent 12 years with Pumas, making his debut
in a 3-1 defeat by Tigres on 19 November 2005. His first league goal would
come in the 2007 Apertura (Opening) championship against Monarcas Morelia.
In July of the same year, Barrera scored twice as Mexico reached the
quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada. A senior debut
would follow a short time later, with 'Dynamite' exploding on to the
international scene in a 3-2 friendly defeat by Guatemala in Los Angeles on
17 October 2007. The lightning-quick wideman's progress was only slowed by a
knee ligament injury suffered during a pre-season fixture with Atlante in
the summer of 2008. However, Barrera quickly returned to full fitness and
was able to make 20 Clausura (Closing) championship appearances in the first
half of 2009, scoring the extra-time goal that secured the title for Pumas
with a 3-2 aggregate win over Pachuca. The 2009 Apertura and 2010
Bicentenario - a special championship held to celebrate the 200th
anniversary of Mexico's independence - saw Barrera continue his fine form,
with the youngster netting eleven goals and tallying five assists in 28
appearances.

At international level, he helped Mexico to lift the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup
in the United States before playing his part in El Tri's qualification for
the 2010 World Cup. After scoring in the 5-0 warm-up win over Bolivia in
February 2010, Barrera appeared in three matches in South Africa, being
introduced as a substitute in the Group A meetings with France and Uruguay
and second round defeat by Argentina. He has already seen his new team-mates
in action, as he travelled to watch the 2-1 win at Peterborough United on
Wednesday night.

Hammers pick up Piquionne
WHUFC.com
West Ham United have completed the signing of France forward Frederic
Piquionne
16.07.2010

West Ham United have completed their second major signing in the space of
three hours with the capture of France international striker Frederic
Piquionne.
The powerful forward has joined from French club Olympique Lyonnais on a
three-year contract for an undisclosed fee, following the arrival earlier on
Friday of Mexico winger Pablo Barrera. Both signings were officially
revealed first on whufc.com, with the announcement further major additions
expected within the next 72 hours. The 31-year-old enjoyed a successful
season on loan at Portsmouth in 2009/10, where he worked under new Hammers
manager Avram Grant. Among the eleven goals he scored in all competitions,
three came in Pompey's run to the FA Cup final. "I'm very happy to sign for
West Ham because my last manager was Avram," he said. "I know Avram and I
like working with him and I think he likes me. I'm coming to work hard for
the squad and I hope we have a good season. "Avram is a very, very good
coach. Last year we had many problems at Portsmouth but we got to the FA Cup
final. He's a very good manager. As a player, it will be good to just
concentrate on my football. When I do that, I play well and play with
passion. We have the players here to have a very good season. "The ambition
here has to be to reach the top ten and maybe to win the League Cup or the
FA Cup. I played at Wembley last season and I scored there and it is an
amazing experience I would like to have again. "I am looking forward to
performing for West Ham now and I hope to score many goals for the club. I
think the fans here are among the best in the world and I am looking forward
to playing for them and for the club."

As well as his new manager, Piquionne will also renew acquaintances with
former AS Saint-Etienne team-mate Herita Ilunga, while also joining forces
with old French league adversaries Manuel da Costas and Julien Faubert. "I
know three of the players here from my time in France - Herita, Manu and
Julien. Herita is someone I know very well because we played together for
Saint-Etienne. "I also like the captain Matthew Upson, because when I played
against him here last season he was very hard and strong. The other players
can also play very well and I don't know why last season was like it was
here."

Piquionne will join the likes of England striker Carlton Cole, South Africa
international Benni McCarthy and promising youngsters Zavon Hines, Freddie
Sears, Frank Nouble and Cristian Montano in Grant's squad. Born in the city
of Noumea, the capital of the French overseas islands of New Caledonia in
the south west Pacific Ocean, Piquionne followed the likes of 1998 FIFA
World Cup winner Christian Karembeu and Paris St-Germain manager Antoine
Kombouare to French football by joining Nimes Olympique in 2000. After
impressing for Nimes and Stade Rennais, Piquionne moved to AS Saint-Etienne,
initially on loan, in 2004, spending three years with Les Verts and scoring
23 goals in 91 league appearances.

The forward, who briefly represented the Caribbean nation of Martinique at
international level in 2002, joined AS Monaco in January 2007, netting 12
times in 46 games before being snapped up by French champions Olympique
Lyonnais in August 2008. Grant moved to bring Piquionne to English football
by signing him on loan for Portsmouth in August 2009. The Frenchman
responded by scoring eleven goals in 45 appearances, 34 of them starts.
Piquionne made his senior debut for France as a substitute in a 1-0 friendly
win over Austria at the Stade de France in Paris on 28 March 2007. He also
appeared for France B in a 1-0 defeat by Slovakia B in August 2007.

Edgar eyes further chances
WHUFC.com
Anthony Edgar ensured Avram Grant began his West Ham United career with
victory at Peterborough United
16.07.2010

Anthony Edgar is hoping his match-winning performance at Peterborough United
caught the eye of new West Ham United manager Avram Grant. The young
midfielder ensured Grant began his tenure with a victory by scoring an
outstanding individual goal in the 2-1 success at London Road on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old picked up possession 35 yards out before running at the Posh
defence and unleashing a low, left-foot shot past England Under-21
goalkeeper Joe Lewis.Having made a positive start to the new campaign, Edgar
is now hoping to be handed further opportunities to shine in pre-season. "I
definitely enjoyed it. I was just happy to get on and show what I can do.
There were a lot of West Ham fans here and they were great and really got
behind us. It was a great performance, I thought. "I enjoyed it in there.
It's all about experience and wherever the manager puts me I'll play and
I'll try to play to my best. "I knew what I was going to do before I got the
ball. I knew I was going to have to shift the ball and try to go for goal
and it went in, thank God!"

While his goal owed everything to the teenager's individual ability, he was
quick to pay tribute to his team-mates. "It was not only me, it was the team
as well. Benni McCarthy and Freddie Sears up front were also very sharp.
They gave me the ball and I finished it. It was only me, it was them as
well. "I was so pleased to get a chance to show what I can do and I was
pleased with my performance. The team performance was exceptional and
hopefully we can push on from here."

The first-team squad fly to Germany for a training camp on Friday and, while
Edgar is hoping to be on the plane, he has vowed to do his best wherever he
is playing this weekend. Grant's side face Bundesliga side VfL Borussia
Monchengladbach in Ruhpolding on Saturday evening, while Alex Dyer's
reserves head for Blue Squad South club Thurrock earlier the same day.
"Hopefully, if I travel [to Germany], I'll be involved in that but if I
don't I'll keep working hard and keep progressing. "I'm just going to do
what I do best which is play. Hopefully I can do that and push on from
there."

West Ham United are pleased to announce the club should be in a position to

squad flying out from London Heathrow to their German training camp on
Friday morning, the hard work on bringing new faces to the Boleyn Ground is
continuing, with an announcement expected to be made before the end of the
day. The latest transfer update comes after the club's first summer signing,
Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, produced a confident debut display
in Wednesday's 2-1 pre-season victory at Peterborough United. The club is
hoping to bring in at least two more new faces, adding international
strength to Avram Grant's squad ahead of the start of the new Barclays
Premier League season. The Hammers will touch down in south east Germany on
Friday afternoon for an eight-day training camp that includes matches
against Bundesliga side VfL Borussia Monchengladbach and Greek champions
Panathinaikos. The travelling party, which includes Scott Parker and
youngsters Matt Fry, Anthony Edgar and Cristian Montano, will be joined by
England duo Robert Green and Matthew Upson in the next few days. The new
signings should all make their Boleyn bow in the SBOBET Cup in aid of the
Academy against RC Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday 7 August before the
Premier League gets under way seven days later.

Reserves head for Thurrock
WHUFC.com
Alex Dyer's youngsters will begin their pre-season schedule with a visit to
near-neighbours Thurrock
16.07.2010

West Ham United reserves kick-off their pre-season schedule by making the
short trip to Blue Square South side Thurrock on Saturday. Alex Dyer will
have a promising squad at his disposal for the visit to Ship Lane, with
young professionals Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson, Olly Lee, Jordan Brown (pictured)
and Callum McNaughton among a host of Academy graduates ready to line up
against The Fleet.

The quartet all featured in Wednesday's pre-season friendly victory at
Peterborough United and, with fellow youngsters Matt Fry, Anthony Edgar and
Cristian Montano travelling with the first-team squad to Germany, all know
they can catch the eye of manager Avram Grant. With Grant and his squad
jetting out for an eight-day training camp on Friday, Dyer is expecting his
young players to do everything they can to impress both at Thurrock and in
their second pre-season friendly at League Two Burton Albion on Saturday 24
July. "The boys have been in for two weeks now and working hard on their
pre-season training, so it will be nice for them to get back into a match
situation again," said Dyer. "Some of them played for the first team in
midweek and did well. This will be their first reserve-team fixture of the
season and we will be looking to start on a positive note. "We always go to
Thurrock because they do a lot for the club behind the scenes and I'm sure
it will be a good, competitive fixture. We have got a young squad, but this
will be good experience for them all. "Three of the boys who did well at
Peterborough have gone with the first team to Germany and I am pleased for
them, because everybody wants to be in and around the first-team squad. This
club has always shown a commitment to promote promising youngsters and I am
sure that will continue."

Alongside his reserve-team regulars, Dyer will also have a number of the
club's promising scholars at his disposal. With the Under-18s not starting
their own pre-season schedule until 24 July, the likes of England U17
forward Robert Hall, Turkey U18 goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet, Poland U18
full-back Filip Modelski and Republic of Ireland youth internationals Eoin
Wearen and Daniel Purdy could all be in action at Thurrock. Saturday's match
kicks-off at 3pm, with tickets available on the turnstiles.

West Ham are set to announce a double signing later today. As previously
mentioned here on KUMB.com, both Pablo Barrera and Frederic Piquionne are
expected to be unveiled by new manager Avram Grant on the day his squad
flies to Austria for their pre-season tour. Barrera, who will costs the
Hammers around £3.5million watched United's 2-1 defeat of Peterborough on
Wednesday night and is expecting to have his work permit situation resolved
imminently.
Piquioone, the former Portsmouth striker has been in London in order to
undergo a medical ahead of a cut-price £1million switch from Lyon. However
the situation regarding fellow French striker Loic Remy is rather less
promising with the news that Liverpool have joined the race to sign the
highly-rated youngster. The Hammers had been in pole position to land the
23-year-old but having dallied over terms appear to have allowed Liverpool
to enter the race.

Hammers must set sights lower
By Martin Samuel, July 15, 2010
The Jewish Chronicle

As transfer policies go, no wonder Avram Grant wishes to keep owner David
Sullivan away from the one at West Ham United. Here is Sullivan explaining
why the purchase of Germany's World Cup striker Miroslav Klose did not go
through: "We had a deal in place before the World Cup after Klose had a bad
season with Bayern Munich. However, as a result of what he has done in South
Africa, it is unlikely to happen."

Now there is a plan. Had Klose continued playing rubbish, West Ham would
have signed him, but as he turned out to be good, the deal is now off. This
would certainly explain why Robert Green and Matthew Upson are no longer on
the market.

Maybe the words came out wrong; maybe the sentence sounded good in his head.
Either way, Sullivan inadvertently flagged up why owners - who are nearer to
fans than professionals - are not to be trusted with their own money when it
comes to buying players. Klose is a big name, an impressive name, but he is
32 and this season has been poor for Munich, scoring six goals in 38
appearances, compared to previous tallies of 20 in 38, and 21 in 47. He
looked a busted flush, a great talent who had lost interest in the game and
was destined to be replaced by younger, hungrier players. So why would
anyone want to buy him? On club form, it would have been a vanity purchase,
a celebrity purchase, much like that of Thierry Henry, another player West
Ham have been linked with this summer.

Klose and Henry could be Grant's preferences, too, who knows? Yet somehow I
doubt it. West Ham are likely to be fighting relegation next season and the
last thing the club needs right now is another big-time Charlie swanning
about as if he is doing everybody a favour just being there. They had enough
of that with South African Benni McCarthy last season.

The only reason any coach would be interested in Klose is that he looked
rejuvenated at the World Cup, although Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager,
has correctly identified acquisitions based on tournament displays as folly.

Just because Klose got himself in the right frame of mind to represent
Germany against Argentina, does not mean he would be similarly inspired by a
trip to Blackpool in West Ham's colours on a wet Wednesday night.

Managers know this. Some will still gamble on a waning talent but Grant has
spent the last season fighting a lost cause at Portsmouth, and knows the
rigours of the battle for survival. Silver superstars are most certainly not
the way forward here.

Sullivan wants to be hands-on – he once said if Wenger was his manager he
would 'probably' let him get on with it – but the best owners soon realise
that the vision at a football club has to come from an employee, not the
employer.

The board can have its business strategy, but the real success stories of
the last 20 years in English football, Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester
United, Wenger at Arsenal, Jose Mourinho – initially – at Chelsea, have come
when the manager has been given his head. All thrived because no owner tried
to do them a favour in the transfer market, however well-intentioned.

Piquionne in Hammers medical
Frenchman set for Upton Park switch
Last updated: 16th July 2010

Skysports.com understands Frederic Piquionne is undergoing a medical at West
Ham ahead of his move to Upton Park. As revealed by skysports.com last month
West Ham have been leading the chase for the former Portsmouth forward. Lyon
forward Piquionne impressed at Fratton Park last season with 11 goals
despite their relegation from the Premier League and he has expressed a
desire to return to England A number of clubs, including West Brom, Fulham
and Blackburn had been chasing Piquionne, but West Ham are closing in on his
signature after agreeing a fee with Lyon for his services. The 31-year-old
is expected to sign a three-year deal at West Ham if he successfully comes
through his medical and could become their second signing of the summer
following Thomas Hitzlsperger. Hammers boss Avram Grant is keen to be
reunited with Piquionne having worked with him at Portsmouth last season and
it looks like he is set to finally land his man.

Reds make Remy move
Striker keen on Anfield move
By Peter O'Rourke Last updated: 16th July 2010
SSN

Skysports.com can confirm Liverpool have made a move to sign French striker
Loic Remy from under the noses of West Ham and Tottenham. New Reds boss Roy
Hodgson has entered the race for the Nice ace and is hoping to beat his
Premier League rivals to the forward's signature. Remy is regarded as one of
the best young strikers in Europe after impressing at Nice over the last few
seasons. The 23-year-old, who has been likened to Thierry Henry, scored 16
goals for Nice last season and has broken into the France national team.
West Ham had been leading the chase for Remy after making a couple of
sizeable offers for the striker, but they were unable to agree a fee with
Nice. However, they could now lose out on Remy with Liverpool firming up
their interest in the player with a bid. Liverpool's technical director
Eduardo Macia is believed to have been tracking Remy for five years and he
has recommended Hodgson make a move for the pacy hit-man. The Reds are in
need of a new striker as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead
of the Europa League deadline with Fernando Torres currently on the
sidelines, leaving David Ngog as the only available forward for the start of
the club's European campaign.

Liverpool's financial director Philip Nash is believed to have raised the
funds to enable the club to make their move as they look to win the race for
the in-demand Frenchman. Remy's agent, Frederic Guerra, has admitted he has
spoken to Liverpool about a possible move and that Remy would be keen on a
switch to Anfield. "Yes, Liverpool are interested in Loic and Loic is
interested in Liverpool," Guerra told skysports.com. "There has also been
interest from West Ham and Tottenham and it is now up to Nice. "Loic has
always said he is keen to play in England and Liverpool are a massive club.
"I believe if Loic comes to England he will be a massive success. "He is
like Thierry Henry, but I believe if he comes to England he could be even
better than Henry. "He is a sensational player, he is very strong, very
quick and two-footed. He is the complete player and Liverpool would love
him."

West Ham United to unveil UNAM Pumas winger Pablo Barrera - report
16 Jul 2010 12:24:00
Goal.com

West Ham United are reportedly set to unveil UNAM Pumas midfielder Pablo
Barrera as the club's latest acquisition on Friday. The Mexican club had
previously revealed that a deal had been struck between the two parties for
the transfer of the player, who is expected to sign a four-year deal with
the east London club.
However, Pumas president Victor Mahbub previously confirmed that the
23-year-old would likely use the Hammers as a stepping stone to moving on to
a bigger club in two or three years time. The east London club have
announced on its official website that they will unveil an unnamed player on
Friday, while Sky Sports reports that this signing is expected to be that of
the Mexican in question. New manager Avram Grant had previously admitted
that West Ham were close to securing the services of Barrera.

West Ham are poised to confirm the signings of Lyon striker Frederic
Piquionne and Mexican winger Pablo Barrera. The club announced on Friday
morning they "should be in a position to unveil at least one exciting new
signing" and it is understood that Avram Grant is close to concluding the
double deal. Barrera represented Mexico at the World Cup and will join the
club from Pumas UNAM in a £4 million deal. He has agreed a four-year
contract with the Hammers.
Piquionne played under Grant during a loan spell with Portsmouth last season
and has been in East London to undergo a medical and conclude negotiations.
A source told Soccernet: "The deal for Piquionne is 99% done." West Ham are
also looking to sign Nice forward Loic Remy, who says both Tottenham and
Liverpool have shown an interest in him this summer. It is understood that
Liverpool have bid £1.5 million less than the Hammers but Remy has hinted
his preference is a move to Anfield.

Liverpool have emerged as the most likely destination for Nice striker Loic
Remy who had been expected to sign for West Ham United. Reds boss Roy
Hodgson is a big fan of the 23-year-old while Nice's chief executive,
Patrick Governatori, has claimed that both Liverpool and Tottenham have made
bids for the player.
Remy admitted: "I have never hidden my desire to play in England. It will be
a choice between two clubs with big futures. I have a slight preference for
a prestige club like Liverpool, even though Tottenham are also very, very
interesting. "Nothing has been decided. Wherever I play, I'll have to fight
and work hard to win my place."
Hammers owners David Sullivan and David Gold, as well as vice-chairman
Karren Brady, flew to the south of France on Wednesday in a an attempt to
seal a £12million deal for the player but it now appears that Liverpool
could hijack their plans. Remy scored 11 league goals in his first season at
Nice and found the net 14 times in 34 Ligue 1 appearances for the club last
term. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insua is set to join Fiorentina and Benfica are
hoping to snap up Damien Plessis.

Bad luck West Ham! Liverpool want Remy
Betfairfootball.com

There was nothing worse at school than having one of the big kids come along
and take your best marble, especially if you'd not even had a chance to play
with it yet. So, imagine how West Ham must feel with the news that Liverpool
have decided they also fancy Nice striker Loic Remy - no matter how bad
things were at Anfield last season, signing for the Reds is still going to
look more attractive than a move to Upton Park. Earlier in the week the
Hammers looked favourites to capture the 23-year-old for a fee of around
£12m and Nice were ready to do business. However, reports on L'Equipe and
Tribal Football both suggest Remy is also being courted by Roy Hodgson, and
that the Reds could have the deal completed in the next few days.
