Groves and Coles appointed
WHUFC.com
Paul Groves and David Coles have joined manager Avram Grant's coaching staff
02.07.2010

West Ham United are delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Groves and David Coles to the club's backroom staff. Senior coach Groves and goalkeeper coach Coles both worked under new manager Avram Grant at Portsmouth and have extensive Barclays Premier League experience. They were at Chadwell Heath on Friday along with first-team coach Kevin Keen to prepare for the start of pre-season training from Monday. Groves, 44, enjoyed a successful 18-year playing career spanning more than 650 Football League appearances with, most notably, Blackpool and Grimsby Town. At Grimsby, he was part of the club's greatest-ever side, reaching Division One - now the Championship - and winning the Football League Trophy in 1998. The former midfielder became player-manager at Blundell Park in December 2001 at the age of just 35, steering the Mariners clear of relegation from Division Two during his first season in charge.
After returning to playing full-time with Scunthorpe United, York City and Stafford Rangers in 2004, Groves joined the Portsmouth coaching staff in the summer of 2006. The Derby-born coach was appointed as Pompey's caretaker manager following the departure of Paul Hart in November 2009 before working as first-team coach under Grant and helping to lead the south coast club to the 2010 FA Cup final.
Coles, who turned 46 on 15 June, has worked with some of the finest goalkeepers in British football. Born in Wandsworth, Coles turned out for Mansfield Town, Aldershot, Newport County and Brighton & Hove Albion before turning his attention to coaching in the 1990s. At Southampton, he worked under former West Ham manager Harry Redknapp, helping to turn Wales international Paul Jones and Finland stopper Antti Niemi into two of the Premier League's top goalkeepers. After following Redknapp to Portsmouth in 2005, Coles helped former Hammer David James to regain his place in the senior England squad and oversaw the development of promising youngsters Asmir Begovic and Jamie Ashdown. Coles also wrote the book 'Goalkeeping - the specialist' in 2003, providing tips and drills for goalkeepers of all ages.

Hammers step up Remy bid
Improved offer tabled for Nice striker
By Pete O'Rourke Last updated: 2nd July 2010

Skysports.com understands West Ham United have tabled an improved bid for French forward Loic Remy. West Ham are keen to rebuild their squad this summer and Nice ace Remy is one of their top targets. The 23-year-old scored 16 goals last season for Nice, having enjoyed a successful campaign during the previous season. Remy is rated as one of the best prospects in Ligue 1 and there was uproar in France when he was left out of the squad, along with Karim Benzema, for this summer's World Cup as Les Bleus crashed out at the group stages. A number of clubs in France are thought to be interested in signing Remy, who has been likened to former Arsenal star Thierry Henry. Arsenal have also been linked with Remy in the past, but West Ham are hoping to win the race to bring the player to the Premier League. The Hammers have now upped their offer to €13.5million (£11.1million) for Remy as they look to thrash out a deal for the player. Remy is believed to be keen on a move to England and West Ham are hoping their latest offer will get the green light from Nice for them to open talks in the next few days.

Portsmouth coaches Paul Groves and David Coles have quit the club to team back up with former Pompey manager Avram Grant at West Ham. Ian Woan and Guy Whittingham will assist Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill in first-team coaching duties while a replacement for Groves is considered. John Keeley, meanwhile, will step up from Pompey's academy to replace Coles as first-team goalkeeping coach. Portsmouth chief executive David Lampitt said: "We are sorry to lose both Paul and David to West Ham, but understand the offer to continue working in the Premier League was difficult to refuse. "I would personally like to thank them both for the excellent jobs they have done at the club and wish them well for the future."
On Keeley's appointment, Cotterill added: "John has worked well in the academy and is looking for a step up. We're more than happy to promote from within.
"At the moment I'm working with Guy and Ian and just want to see the dynamics of the group before appointing anybody else."

McCarthy in determined mood
Striker hoping for Hammers impact
By Carla Hilton Last updated: 2nd July 2010

Benni McCarthy has said he is determined to prove himself under Avram Grant at West Ham. The 32-year-old failed to make an impact in a dismal season for the Hammers last term after arriving on the last day of the January transfer window. He made only five appearances for the club having been troubled by a persistent knee injury which led to him being overlooked by South Africa in the World Cup. Determined to put things right, he has made the trip back to Chadwell Heath early this week in a bid to be better prepared for training on Monday. Those extra preparations could prove crucial, with Grant making no secret of his desire to bolster his current squad, making competition for a starting berth incredibly fierce. "I still have loads to prove to the West Ham fans," he said. "For me, I am like a new player coming in, because last season I am writing off. "I have been training hard for two weeks now and it is all off my own back. "I am very determined and that is why I decided to come back earlier. "I wanted to make a fresh start - what I couldn't do then, I want to be able to do now."
Grant has already brought in German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger from Lazio and has made clear his intention of spending further. Nice striker Loic Remy and highly-rated Brazilian starlet Neymar are also said to be targets, whilst a fresh bid for West Brom midfielder Graham Dorans has been rejected. With so many new faces in the pipeline, McCarthy's number one priority is maintaining his fitness and avoiding a recurrence of that niggling knee problem. "The injury is completely fine and the weight is back to normal," an adamant McCarthy told the club's official website. "I have been following my programme since the end of the season. "It is the first time that something like this has happened to me and I need to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Hammers in Neymar talks
Agent claims discussions with West Ham chiefs
Last updated: 2nd July 2010
SSN

Neymar's agent has confirmed that he is in talks with West Ham about a move to England. West Ham made their ambitious for Neymar earlier this week when they lodged a bid of just over £12million. Santos immediately responded by declaring that they had no intention of selling Neymar, who is one of the most sought after young players in the world. And despite not agreeing terms, the player's agent, Wagner Ribeiro, has confirmed that he has already held talks with the East London outfit. "I had a long talk with the leaders of West Ham via a video conference," Neymar told Terra Brazil. "My obligation as agent is to pass on the information to the player's family. "The negotiation with Santos is another case [for West Ham], and that is not for me."
Brazilian sources claim that a bid of closer to £20million could be enough to land Neymar, and they are now braced for West Ham to make an offer around that figure. However, if the Santos board reject that offer then West Ham could bid £28.5million, which would trigger Neymar's release clause. Reports in Brazil are also adamant that Chelsea are behind the deal and that West Ham will keep the player for 12-months before moving him on to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have previously done a similar deal with Santos, when they signed Alex, and then loaned him to PSV Eindhoven, until he qualified to play in England. However, with the huge transfer fee attached to Neymar - he would likely be granted a permit immediately to play in England so could, if he signed for them, play for West Ham or Chelsea.

Behrami unsure of Roma plans
Agent still waiting to talk with Hammers over player's future
By Simone Bargellini Last updated: 2nd July 2010
SSN

Valon Behrami's agent has revealed that he does not even know whether Roma are still interested in the West Ham player. The Switzerland international's future has been the subject of speculation for some time, even though he is only halfway through a long-term contract at Upton Park. Roma are thought to want to bring Behrami back to the Italian capital, with the 25-year-old having enjoyed a productive spell with Lazio before his move to West Ham. Reports earlier this week suggested that Roma could include goalkeeper Doni in their offer as part of a swap deal. However, Behrami's representative Alessandro Beltrami insists he has had no contact with the Serie A club since holding informal talks with sports director Daniele Prade a long time ago. "The interest of Roma? I don't know if there is," Beltrai told Radio Incontro. "I met Prade in England long ago because he had come to see some matches and he said to me their estimate for my client. "Recently I have not met Roma and for now there is nothing concrete."
Beltrami maintains that a decision will not be taken on his client's future until after talks have been held with West Ham. The Hammers had previously stressed that they did not want to lose Behrami and Beltrami is eager to find out whether that is still the case following Avram Grant's appointment as manager. "Whoever wants Behrami will have to talk first with West Ham," Beltrami explained. "Before the end of the season West Ham told us that Valon was unsellable. I have not spoken with the new manager and when Valon returns from holiday, on 18th July, we'll see if they still consider Behrami non-transferable. "The player still has two years of contract but for him it is essential to feel important in a project, knowing the objectives of the club. "We'll talk with the manager to determine if the player is still part of the project at West Ham. "We are happy about the arrival of Avram Grant. He is a great coach and this choice of the club means there is an ambitious project. "Financial problems at West Ham? In this season we have not had any kind of economic problems."

Hammers consider new Neymar bid
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent
ESPN
July 2, 2010

West Ham have confirmed to Soccernet that they have not given up hope of signing Brazilian wonderkid Neymar but Upton Park insiders described the move as "complicated' because of third-party owners. Santos forward Neymar, 18, is 40% owned by an investment group, with a €28.4 million release clause and, in the wake of the Carlos Tevez affair, West Ham would need to buy the player outright to comply with the stricter third-party rules. West Ham denied that the plan is to allow Chelsea to sign him and loan him for one season to acclimatise to Premier League football, but it is possible that the Hammers will increase their £12 million bid as they believe he could be sold on to one of the league's biggest clubs if he succeeds in England. One player who will not be sold on is the club's player of the year, Scott Parker. The midfielder has been linked with a move to Aston Villa, but co-owner David Sullivan told Soccernet: "Scott Parker really is not for sale."
Parker has two years to run on his contract and the club would only consider an exceptional bid. Meanwhile, Sunderland are "just one" of the clubs chasing Matthew Upson. The England defender has just 12 months left on his contract has asked for time to consider the transfer. He has been offered a new three-year deal at West Ham. Carlton Cole is also attracting interest from Premier League clubs but, while Fulham continue to show interest in the striker, their £9 million valuation falls some way short of West Ham's expectation of at least £12 million.

Neymar has a £29.1m release clause in his contract but it is unlikely West Ham, who are thought to be cash-strapped, will be able to activate that clause. Steve Clarke leaves West Ham Santos sporting director Luiz Nunes Pedro Conceicao has confirmed his club have rejected initial offers from the Hammers for Neymar, and from Lyon for Ganso. "We had offers of €15 million (£12 million) for each. We have not had time to formally contact either club, but our position is clear," Conceicao said. "We have not and do not want to open negotiations to sell either player." Sunderland, meanwhile, have made an offer of £7m for West Ham defender Matthew Upson. £7m for Matt Upson – Deal or No Deal?
West Ham Till I Die

It has been reported that Sunderland have tabled a £7m bid for Matt Upson. Not an inconsiderable sum for a 31 year old centre-half, who had a relatively disappointing season in 2009-10! A lot depends on Upson's attitude towards the new contract currently on the table. If he signs it then he will probably stay, if not then the club are likely to accept an offer.

The question is whether Upson fancies Sunderland and the delights of the North-East? He might even prefer to stay and see out the final year of his contract at West Ham? After all, in this situation, the player holds all the major cards. Regardless, is this potentially a good deal for West Ham? If Upson does leave, it will then becomes a question of who the club will bring in as a replacement?

Avram Grant has completely his backroom staff, with the capture of Messrs Cole and Groves from former club, Portsmouth. One wonders if Kevin Keen and Alex Dyer will be retained. In the absence of news to the contrary, one can only assume that they will.

I terms of incoming deals, the major speculation relates to big money bids for Remy and, Brazilian prospect, Naymar. It appears that Remy would have preferred to have joined the gooners, but Wenger does not appear interested. As such, we may well have a chance of landing the player, provided that a CL qualified club does not come in and trump us! As for the Naymar deal, who knows? He appears to be on the radar of the European big guns as a top prospect, but they do not appear ready to move on a deal. We will have to keep a watching brief on that one.

Finally, it appears that our old friend, Yossi Benayoun, has signed for Chelski. He is potentially a very good signing for them, as he will definitely bring something different to their midfield. Players like Benayoun, with his vision and creative ability, are at a premium. His signing for Liverpool was a major loss for us and one that arguably we have never adequately redressed. I would have welcomed him back like a shot, but the call of a top four side and the CL meant that was unlikely.

Hammers head for Germany
WHUFC.com
Avram Grant will take his West Ham United squad abroad to play at least two games later this month
01.07.2010

West Ham United can confirm the club's 2010/11 pre-season preparations are set to include a training camp in Germany between 16 and 24 July.

The Hammers are due to travel to a base near the German-Austrian border, although the summer match schedule will begin with a friendly closer to home at Peterborough United on Wednesday 14 July. Avram Grant's squad will head to the continent two days later. The trip will mean a swift return home for Munich-born Thomas Hitzlsperger, with the Germany midfielder set to report to Chadwell Heath for pre-season training next week after his transfer from S.S. Lazio.
The first fixture lined up will be against Bundesliga outfit VfL Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday 17 July before the trip concludes with a date against Greek giants Panathinaikos FC on Friday 23 July. A third game is also to be confirmed with all venues yet to be finalised. The Hammers will return home a day later with just a fortnight remaining until the glamour pre-season friendly against Spanish side RC Deportivo La Coruna for the SBOBET Cup on Saturday 7 August. In between, a Hammers side will take on Burton Albion on Saturday 24 July, while first-team friendlies will take place at MK Dons and Ipswich Town on Wednesday 28 and Saturday 31 July respectively.

Pre-season training camp opponents

Saturday 17 July v VfL Borussia Monchengladbach, 6pm local time

Monchengladbach finished 12th in the German Bundesliga last season and have a strong history at home and abroad. In the 1970s, they won the title four times and also lost the 1977 European Champion Clubs' Cup final to Liverpool. Managed by former Manchester City defender Michael Frontzeck, their squad boasts United States midfielder Michael Bradley. The club will hope the match - which would be the first-ever meeting - takes place after last July's friendly against German side Werder Bremen in Austria was rained off.

Friday 23 July v Panathinaikos FC, 6.30pm local time

The reigning Greek double winners, big-spending Panathinaikos boast France forward Djibril Cisse and Greece midfielder Kostas Katsouranis in their squad. The Athens club, led by Nikos Nioplias, have won the title 20 times and will get another crack at the UEFA Champions League next season, having lost the 1971 final to AFC Ajax. The Hammers drew 1-1 with Panathinaikos in August 1991 in the third-place play-off at the Makita International Tournament at Highbury, before losing 3-2 on penalties.

Benni means business
WHUFC.com
After a stop-start first six months at the club, Benni McCarthy is looking forward to the new season
01.07.2010

Benni McCarthy has spoken about his determination to make 2010/11 a season to remember for West Ham United fans. The striker has been hard at work for the past fortnight at Chadwell Heath to ensure he is ready for the start of pre-season from Monday. The return to training will sharpen minds for the big kick-off on Saturday 14 August, with fans only having until 5pm on Saturday to make sure of their season tickets at a reduced rate. "I still have loads to prove to the West Ham fans," said the 32-year-old former Blackburn striker. "For me, I am like a new player coming in, because last season I am writing off. I have been training hard for two weeks now and it is all off my own back."
The forward missed out on the South Africa squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup because of fitness issues after injury problems caused him to play just five times for the club following his February move from Blackburn Rovers. "I am very determined and that is why I decided to come back earlier. I wanted to make a fresh start - what I couldn't do then, I want to be able to do now. "The injury is completely fine and the weight is back to normal. I have been following my programme since the end of the season. It is the first time that something like this has happened to me and I need to make sure it doesn't happen again."

McCarthy is looking forward to working with new manager Avram Grant. "I have met him a few times and I don't think they would have brought him in if they didn't think he was the right man for the job. His record at Chelsea spoke for itself."

Matthias ready for action
WHUFC.com
Matthias Fanimo is looking forward to a productive season with both club and country
01.07.2010

Matthias Fanimo has plenty of reasons to be cheerful ahead of the 2010/11 FA Premier Academy League season. Not only has the exciting winger been awarded a scholarship by West Ham United, but he has also been included in the England Under-17 squad for the forthcoming Nordic Tournament. Hammers team-mate Robert Hall helped England to win the UEFA European U17 Championship in Luxembourg earlier this summer, and Fanimo is determined to emulate his team-mate when Kenny Swain's squad head for Finland in early August. England will take on the host nation, Denmark and Iceland in the group stage, with a final awaiting against Scotland, Sweden, Faroe Islands or Norway should they top their section. "It's good to play for England - it's pretty much a dream come true for me because you don't think about doing such things when you're a kid," said Fanimo, who earned eight U16 caps and helped his country to Victory Shield glory last winter. At club level, the 16-year-old has also impressed with his consistency and eye for goal. After starting the 2009/10 season in West Ham's U16 side, Fanimo graduated to the U18s in December, scoring on his debut and tallying five goals in ten appearances in total. "Personally it was a good season for me. I moved on to the Under-18s because I adapted to their style of play. I thought it would be harder for me physically and mentally, but I improved as the season went on. "I came on trial at the age of five and signed on when I was six, so I've been here since then. As a player, I'm quick and powerful and skilful as well. "Before, getting into the box for me was a bit of a problem due to my fitness. I wasn't scoring as many goals because I wasn't getting into the box, but now my fitness is better so it's not a problem. "I'm pleased to get my scholarship because it means another two years at the club which I'm enjoying. It was good to get that."
Fanimo is one of no fewer than 13 schoolboys who will begin their scholarships on Monday 5 July, and the youngster believes their team spirit and familiarity on and off the pitch will stand the U18s in good stead in 2009/10. "We've got a good squad. We're strong in all areas and play as a team. We've been together since Under-12s, so as we've got older we've kept that winning mentality by playing as a team. That's what has helped us."

West Ham fail with new Graham Dorrans bid
BBC.o.uk

West Bromwich Albion have rejected an improved bid from West Ham for highly-rated midfielder Graham Dorrans. Albion turned down West Ham's offer of around £4m from them for the 22-year-old Scotland international in April. And they remain determined to hold onto Dorrans, who scored 17 goals for the Baggies as they were promoted back to the Premier League last season. "Graham Dorrans is not for sale," insisted West Brom's sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth. Dorrans signed a new three-and-a-half year contract in January, with the option of a 12-month extension. His performances last season were recognised by the Professional Footballers' Association when he was named in their Championship team of the year. Ashworth added: "I have stressed several times since we achieved promotion, our aim is to retain our core players and try to strengthen our squad around them. "Graham signed a new contract until June 2014 in January and he remains a key member of our squad."

Footballer Calum Davenport cleared of sister attack

Calum Davenport left court with his wife Zoey and father Curtis Former West Ham defender Calum Davenport has been cleared of assaulting his pregnant sister. The trial at Luton Crown Court was told the 27-year-old had headbutted Cara Davenport and bit her cheek after being told she was pregnant again. The jury was told the footballer called her a "form of cancer" during a row over how she was going to support the child at her home in Bedford. Mr Davenport, of Greenfields, Bedford, had denied causing actual bodily harm. The attack is alleged to have happened at his sister's home on 22 August. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland footballer was accused of verbally abusing his seven-week pregnant sister before bundling her to the ground. Following the incident, Miss Davenport's 25-year-old boyfriend Worrell Whitehurst went to the Davenport's mother's home in Kempston.

'Distressing time'

He stabbed Mr Davenport in both legs which severed 90% of one of the main arteries in one leg and he lost half of his blood. Mr Davenport spent four weeks in hospital and in March his contract with West Ham United was ended by mutual consent. He has not played a competitive football match since. Whitehurst has previously admitted grievous bodily harm and will be sentenced now the trial has concluded. Mr Davenport said in a statement read by his solicitor Shamsun Nahar that he was "pleased" with the jury's verdict. The statement added: "This has been a particularly distressing time for my family and I hope now that we can put this behind us and I can focus on my career. "I have nothing further to add and I will not be making any further comments."

Duo set to sign

West Ham are set to land two members of Avram Grant's Portsmouth backroom team within the next 48 hours.

Goalkeeping coach Dave Coles (pictured, right) and first team coach Paul Groves are set to follow Grant to the Boleyn according to reports on the South Coast. The pair, who had been expected to return to Fratton Park today for the start of pre-season training failed to appear lending weight to rumours that both are on the verge of moving to West Ham.

Steve Clarke, United's former assistant manager followed ex-manager Gianfranco Zola out of the club last month, hot on the heels of temporary goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock, whose short-term deal finished at the end of last season.

Paul Groves

44-year-old Groves is a former professional footballer who spent the majority of his playing days at Grimsby Town, having begun his career at non-league Belper Town in the mid 1980s. In 2001 the central midfielder was made player/manager of the Mariners, a job he held for nearly three years before he was fired - despite being kept on as a player. In November 2009 he was appointed as caretaker manager of Portsmouth following the departure of Paul Hart and worked as first team coach under Avram Grant.

Dave Coles

46-year-old Coles spent the majority of his playing career in the lower leagues with Aldershot having been let go by Birmingham City at the age of 19. The Wandsworth-born coach - who was hailed as the reason for David James regaining his England place - had been linked with a move to Tottenham last year in order to join up with former boss Harry Redknapp, and was recently referred to by Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie as 'one of the best goalkeeping coaches in the country'.

Neymar bid rejected
KUMB.com

Brazilian club Santos have rejected West Ham's opening bid for teenage striking sensation Neymar da Silva, according to reports. KUMB.com revealed exclusively on Tuesday how the club were looking to seal a deal to bring the 18-year-old to east London. But according to reports, the South Americans have said 'no' to an offer thought to be in the region of £12million, having turned down a similar bid from French club Lyon recently.

However it is claimed that the offer - news of which emerged a matter of days before the season ticket renewal deadline passes - is likely to be resubmitted, with West Ham said to be willing to go up to around £20million to land a player who has been courted by most of the world's top clubs in recent months.

Referring to Neymar and team mate Ganso, Santos' sporting director Luiz Nunes Pedrio Conceicao said: "We had offers of €15million for each. We have not had time to formally contact either clubs, but our position is clear. We have not, and do not, want to open negotiations to sell either player. On several occasions now we have said that we will not negotiate, and this needs to be clear."

It was initially thought that the Hammers would take the player for a year as part of a convoluted loan-deal that would see Neymar move to Chelsea after one season with the Hammers.

However it is now being suggested that chairman Sullivan & Gold, still without a marquee signing since taking control of the club, would be willing to sign the player on a permanent basis with the intention of selling after a similar period of time.

Black Cats target Upson
Sunderland lodge £7m bid for Hammers defender
Last updated: 1st July 2010
SSN

Sky Sports sources understand that Sunderland have made a £7million offer for West Ham defender Matthew Upson. The Black Cats flirted with relegation last season before mounting a late rally that ensured a comfortable mid-table finish. One problem for Steve Bruce was the way his side struggled to keep clean sheets, making it difficult for the manager to settle on a regular back four. Bruce is looking to strengthen this summer and is thought to have targeted Upson as a player that could improve his squad. Sunderland are believed to have tested West Ham's resolve with a bid and will hope their offer is accepted. Upson has been a key figure at Upton Park since he was snapped up from Birmingham in 2007 but the club endured a difficult campaign last term. A new regime is now in place with Avram Grant as manager and it remains to be seen how he will reshape the Hammers squad. Co-owner David Sullivan admitted in May that West Ham may struggle to retain the services of Upson, who was part of England's miserable World Cup campaign.

Baggies stand firm on Dorrans

West Bromwich Albion have stressed Graham Dorrans is not for sale after rejecting a second bid from West Ham United. Skysports.com revealed earlier on Thursday that the Hammers had launched a fresh attempt to persuade West Brom to sell the Scotland international. An offer of £4million was previously rejected at the end of April and West Ham returned with an increased bid of £4.5million for the midfielder. However, that offer has again been given short shrift by the newly-promoted Baggies, who are determined to keep Dorrans at The Hawthorns. Sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth told the club's official website: "As I have stressed several times since we achieved promotion, our aim is to retain our core players and try to strengthen our squad around them.
"I want to make it clear again that Graham Dorrans is not for sale. "Graham signed a new contract until June 2014 in January and he remains a key member of our squad." Dorrans, who joined from Livingston in 2008, scored 18 goals for West Brom last term and was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

Hammers eye l'OM loan
West Ham to move for striker

Sky Sports sources understand that West Ham are set to enquire about Marseille's Mamadou Samassa. The 24-year-old striker is set to be made available on loan by l'OM after he spent much of last season away from the Stade Velodrome. Samassa, who was linked with a move to England last summer with Middlesbrough, joined Valenciennes and he impressed with six goals in just 11 starts. Now it is understood that the Hammers are ready to try and take Samassa on loan for next season. Samassa current has three years left on his current Marseille contract, having joined in 2008 from Le Mans. He was signed as a replacement for Djibril Cisse, but he has scored just two goals for Marseille and his future looks set to lie away from the French champions.

Santos shun Hammers bid
West Ham chase Brazilian starlet
Last updated: 1st July 2010

Santos have confirmed they have rejected a bid from West Ham for striking starlet Neymar. The Hammers have good contacts in South America and they have turned their attentions to the most highly-rated young forward in the region. Real Madrid have been chasing him for over 12 months and tried but failed to finalise a deal last year, whilst Inter Milan, Manchester City and Manchester United are all well aware of the 18-year-old after tracking his progress closely.
But just like when they beat some of Europe's elite to land Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano in 2006, West Ham are looking to do the same again by signing Neymar. They have offered an initial £12million (€15million) for the player - which has been rejected. Santos confirmed they had turned down the bid as they also shunned a similar offer from French giants Lyon for another of their top young players - midfielder Ganso. "We had offers of €15million for each," Santos sporting director Luiz Nunes Pedro Conceicao confirmed to the Brazilian media. "We have not had time to formally contact either clubs, but our position is clear.
"We have not, and do not, want to open negotiations to sell either player. "On several occasions now we have said that we will not negotiate, and this needs to be clear."
Despite the rejection, local sources claim that West Ham are already preparing to return with an offer of £20million (€25million) - which could be enough to persuade Santos. Reports are also suggesting that West Ham are only seeing the deal as a short-term measure as they will look to move Neymar on after 12 months, with a move to Chelsea in 2011 already being mooted.

Santos 'no' to West Ham bid

WEST HAM have had a £12.4million bid for Brazilian wonderkid Neymar rejected. The Hammers are believed to have made the offer for the 18-year-old striker despite their financial troubles. Santos director of football Pedro Luiz Nune said: "We received an offer from West Ham for Neymar worth £12.4m. "Our position is clear, we are not interested in opening negotiations." The Brazilian giants have also snubbed a bid from Lyon for Paulo Henrinque — nicknamed Ganso. Nunes added: "The proposal for Ganso was £12.4m. It was £6.6m up front and then a further £5.8m depending on the player's performance."

West Ham prepare new moves for TWO French strikers

The Mirror

West Ham boss Avram Grant is making a new and improved £12 million offer for French striker Loic Remy - despite the fact that he is an Arsenal fan. Grant's money men David Sullivan and David Gold have tabled a fresh bid to Nice for the young striker who is keen to come to England for next season. Prolific Remy admits to being a 'closet' Gunner and hoped they would come for him this summer but Hammers want to speak to him in the next few days and push through the deal. Remy has been watched by several clubs in England but he fits the West Ham bill and they are willing to increase their opening £10 million offer to get him. West Ham's renewed interest comes as they give up hope of landing Nigerian Yakubu from Everton. They had hoped to do a £7 million deal but the Goodison club want more. Grant is also joining the hunt for Lyon striker Frederic Piquionne whose £40,000-a-week wages have proved a problem in talks with West Brom yesterday. Albion are willing to fund the move and their £1 million-plus bid is acceptable to the French side, but the former Portsmouth loanee's salary is a snag. However Hammers would pick up the tab and have signalled their interest.

Avram Grant is ready to make a £16m bid to land Brazilian sensation Neymar. Now Grant is ready to step up the Hammers interest in a player who has a £29.1million release clause in his contract. Santos Sporting Director Luiz Nunes Pedro Conceicao confirmed that the club had rejected West Ham's £12m offer, insisting they would only do business for an offer too good to refuse. Referring to interest from French club Lyon in midfielder Ganso, Conceicao said: "We had offers of 15m euros [£12m] for each. "We have not had time to formally contact either clubs, but our position is clear. "We have not, and do not, want to open negotiations to sell either player. Neymar da Silva Scouting Report

Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City are set for a summer battle for the signature of Brazilian wonderkid Neymar. Roberto Mancini has already run the rule over the Samba star, but now the Stamford Bridge money men have set their sights on him as they plot the rebuilding of their aging squad.
Neymar is still only 17 but has already had all the usual comparisons and has been dubbed "the new Robinho" (presumably that is meant to be a compliment, despite what Man City fans might think), and "the new Pele", although that may have something to do with the fact he plays for Pele's old club, Santos.
Nevertheless, he has been displaying enough talent to have the usual suspects sitting up and taking notice. As well as City and Chelsea, Manchester United, Milan, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Barcelona have all expressed an interest in the youngster.

But what is all the fuss about? Here's your essential need to know:

Skysports.com understands West Ham have stepped up their interest in Frederic Piquionne as they look to win the race for the Frenchman's services. Piquionne, who spent last season on loan at Portsmouth, is set to leave Lyon with the French side willing to sell the striker for as little as €1million.
Piquionne impressed at Fratton Park last season with 11 goals despite their relegation from the Premier League and a number of clubs have expressed an interest in bringing him back to England. Fulham have made a couple of offers for Piquionne, while West Ham have also seen a previous bid rejected for the player. West Brom are understood to have tabled a bid for Piquionne earlier this week as they look to bolster their squad ahead of life back in the top flight.
In the wake of West Brom's interest in Piquionne West Ham have now come back in for the 31-year-old. Hammers boss Avram Grant is keen to be reunited with Piquionne having worked with him at Portsmouth last season and he is hoping to win the race for the French international.

Neymar race hots up as West Ham offer Santos £16m for the 'new Pele'
Daily Mail
By Ashley Gray Last updated at 11:26 AM on 30th June 2010

West Ham have made a £16million offer for Santos wonderkid Neymar. It emerged this week that the Hammers had joined some of Europe's top clubs in tracking the 18-year-old forward and sources in Brazil say they have now submitted a formal bid. Neymar is keen to eventually test himself in Europe but his father - who also acts has his agent - has reservations about making the move too soon in his career. The Hammers' stature could also prove unattractive to a player being scouted by the likes of Real Madrid, but a move to Upton Park has the potential to be a stepping stone to Chelsea. The Blues have tracked Neymar for about two years but have been reluctant to meet the asking price. Santos have consistently insisted they do not want to sell their jewel for at least another year and have previously indicated they will not do a deal for less than his £28.4m release clause. However, if they do accept West Ham's offer - surpassing the club-record £7.5m they paid for Craig Bellamy in 2007 - the same deal would be offered to Manchester City. The Eastlands club secured first refusals on Neymar and 20-year-old team-mate Paulo Henrique Ganso when they allowed Robinho to join Santos on a six-month loan in the winter. Any deal is complicated by Santos owning just 60 per cent of Neymar's rights and needing the agreement of an investment group should they accept anything less than the buyout clause. Neymar has been simultaneously likened to Robinho and the great Pele. His penchant for stepovers is reminiscent of the Manchester City man and he can play wide left or as a centre forward. He was the revelation of Santos's march to the Sao Paulo Championship title this year and also helped them to the Brazilian Cup final by hitting 27 goals in 30 games this year.

Speculation, Speculation Everywhere, but Is There a Deal in Sight?
West Ham Till I Die

West Ham have been linked with moves for a number of players in recent days. According to club sources, a few days ago, a new deal was due to be closed within the next 14 days. If so, then a player purchase should announced by early next week. But will it be any of the following?:

West Ham are alleged to have bid £16m for Santos' 'new Pele,' 18 year old Neymar. His goal scoring record was certainly impressive last season, when he scored 27 goals in 30 matches. However, the big guns of Europe are well aware of the player's ability and West Ham could find themselves competing with the likes of Real Madrid. One possibility is that we take the player on loan and effectively provide a shop window for a later move to one of the big guns.

It would be a fantastic coup if we bought the player outright, but it is probably unlikely. Another factor is that it has been reported that Neymar's ownership is split between Santos (who owe 60%) and a group of South American businessman. Obviously, the club would need to ensure that any purchase conformed with PL rules on third party influence, but that should not be a massive obstacle if we actually work with PL officialdom this time!.

Elsewhere, it has been reported that Scott Parker will be the subject of a £10m bid from Aston Villa. Well, if the joint Chairmen are true to their word, then this is a non-starter! After all, did they not state Parker was not for sale. Lets see if the club's resolve holds when large transfer fees are offered? Other reports state that Roma want Behrami, but they are not keen to even match the £5m fee that we paid Lazio for the player!! Once again, there is unlikely to be a deal unless Roma match West Ham's valuation, which is likely to be well over £8m.

One mooted compromise is that Roma will offer c.£5m, plus their out of favour Brazilian goal keeper, Doni. Personally, I would not sell Behrami cheaply, nor would I accept just any of Roma's old cast offs. If a deal is to happen, and it involves a player exchange, then we need to play hard ball and demand one of their better players. Is there anyone at Roma that might do a job for us?

Finally, the deal most likely to go through by next week, is probably the signing of ex-Pompey loanee Piquionne. Other clubs, like WBA, are interested in Piquionne, but we should be able to trump them, due to the player's past relationship with Avram Grant. At 31 he is not going to get any better, but he will probably do a job on a short-term basis.

Although we are understandably focused on incoming deals, it will also be interesting to see who Grant will move out? Of particular interest will be the futures of Robert Green and Matt Upson. Will the club decide to bring in a new keeper and move Green on? Will Matt Upson sign the contract extension on the table? Will the World Cup truma have an adverse impact upon the value and demand for the two players?

I certainly anticipate that Carlton Cole will stay at the club next season. He is likely to spearhead the attack in a 4-3-3 formation. Hopefully Zavon Hines will get over his injury problems and really establish himself this season. Similarly, there has been no movement on Diamanti's proposed loan move back to Italy. I would like to see Diamanti given another chance next season. Indeed, he could become a crucial player if we regularly deploy a 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 next season. I suppose it all depends if Grant brings in another play-maker like Benayoun from Liverpool or Elano from Man City? However, I would not shed any tears if the likes of Kovac, Gabbidon or Spector were moved on this summer.

SJ. Chandos.

Sunderland Table £7 Million Bid For West Ham United Defender Matthew Upson - Report
Jul 1, 2010 1:13:00 AM
Goal.com

Sunderland have made a £7million offer to West Ham United for England defender Matthew Upson. The 31-year-old has been heavily criticised for his performance in England's 4-1 Round of 16 defeat against Germany despite scoring the Three Lions only goal that actually counted. The Hammers centre-back was blamed for the Germans first two goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, which put England in a 2-0 hole against their arch-rivals. Upson has just a year left on his current deal with West Ham and will be a free agent next summer. However, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is interested in the defender, who wants to take his time to decide where his future lies after returning from South Africa. The England defender's current deal pays him £50,000-a-week and West Ham, who are currently in £90 million debt, want to sell Upson before he becomes a Bosman.

West Ham United Academy goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet has been included in the Turkey Under-18 squad for a friendly double-header with Estonia next month.
Mehmet will join up with his international team-mates in Istanbul ahead of the fixtures, which will take place at the Ozel 2 Mac stadium on Tuesday 13 July and Thursday 15 July. The 17-year-old's call-up is the latest step in what has already been a successful international career for the London-based stopper. Mehmet, who has a Turkish father, was part of his nation's squad at the 2009 UEFA European U17 Championship finals, keeping a clean sheet as Turkey defeated England 1-0 in the group stage. Later last year, the tall goalkeeper played four times as Turkey reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Nigeria before losing to Colombia in a penalty shoot-out. At club level, Mehmet is one of a host of promising young goalkeepers at West Ham, making eleven FA Premier Academy League starts in 2009/10.

Alvin on Avram

Hammers great Alvin Martin has spoken about his thoughts on the new season under Avram Grant
30.06.2010

Alvin Martin is looking forward to the new Barclays Premier League season and says it is a chance to think positively for all things claret and blue. The Hammers legend is excited at the future of the team under new manager Avram Grant, with pre-season training set to start next week and the new Barclays Premier League season to follow the SBOBET Cup at the Boleyn against RC Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday 7 August. "The club have made an excellent choice in choosing Avram to be our next manager and I have high hopes for the team next season. "We move on and on to a new era at West Ham. "Avram is an excellent appointment. He has experience of working with top players, his time at Chelsea was probably under-rated. He did a terrific job, was never daunted by the size of the job and then tried to do the best he could at what must have been a very difficult time at Portsmouth with all what they had going on.
"He seems to me to be a steady character, no frills but just gets on with it all and as far as I am aware, had other offers. He chose to come here, chose West Ham as the club he wants to be at and I think is a good choice for West Ham."
Martin, now working as a football analyst for talkSPORT, believed the experience of last season when the team did not reach the heights it wanted, will stand them in good stead and said the stability of the club top and bottom will also help towards a rosier future. "The structure now is healthier, I am sure the owners will say there is still a lot to be done, but it is more sound now and that is a great thing for the supporters to hear. "We can start to look to build and go on, the traditions of the club are all part of this and hopefully we can enjoy a more tranquil time now."
The former West Ham captain said there was plenty of quality in the squad and together with a few new fresh faces like Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger, saw no reason why the team could not enjoy a solid and positive season ahead. "We have very good players here already, young players in the first team as well as those still coming through. We have made one new signing already and I know the club are working hard to bring in others to add to what we have here already. "The players that were here last season will learn from last season but will also be looking to start from a clean slate under the new manager. Everyone will be wanting to get a good solid campaign in the league, with hopefully maybe a nice little cup run alongside that. "Whatever, they don't want to go through some of the experiences from last season again, but at the same time, it will stand them in good stead. Whether players have had a break all summer or have been in the World Cup, once it starts getting near, they will all be raring to go again for the new season. "The fans again can play their part and really get behind the team as that is important, but I am very optimistic for the new season for my old club."

Lee delighted to sign
WHUFC.com
Olly Lee is targeting a first-team place after signing a new contract with West Ham United
30.06.2010

Olly Lee is ready to impress manager Avram Grant after signing a new contract with West Ham United. The midfielder saw his first year as a professional ruined by illness and injury, being laid low with a draining bout of glandular fever and suffering a troublesome leg injury. Lee returned to action in fine style, scoring a fantastic long-range goal in the 3-2 Barclays Premier Reserve League South victory over Fulham at the Boleyn Ground before impressing in Academy Director Tony Carr's Testimonial match in May. Now, with the start of pre-season training less than a week away, the 18-year-old is ready to make up for lost time by impressing new manager Grant. "The summer has been really good," said Lee, who has noticeably bulked up since the end of the previous campaign. "I've worked really hard to get my fitness up so I hope this season will be a big season for me. "I had a holiday and relaxed for a bit, but ever since then I've been training most days and working as hard as I can to make this season my season. "I've been doing a bit of everything. We've been given a fitness programme so I've been following that and also doing my own little bits. I know what I've got to do to get my body how it should be. "I'm trying to put a bit of muscle on and get a bit stronger because I've got to be strong enough to compete with everyone else."
The midfielder, who turns 19 on 11 July, is aware he faces a battle to force his way into Grant's plans, with the likes of Hammer of th Year Scott Parker, new signing Thomas Hitzlsperger, Mark Noble, Radoslav Kovac, Jack Collison, Valon Behrami and Luis Boa Morte competing for a spot in the West Ham engine room. Despite the competition for places, the teenager, who describes himself as "a midfielder who gets about, can pass the ball and hopefully score a few goals", is up for the challenge. "There are a lot of players in my position, but I see the situation that they are there are the moment, but I'm going to push them out of the way and get there myself. I've got time ahead of me and I aspire to be better than them."
When asked what he hopes to achieve over the coming 12 months, Lee has twin aims - the first is to stay fit, while the second is to continue the development that began when he joined West Ham at the age of 14. "Hopefully I can steer clear of illness and injury for starters! Hopefully, if I can do that and I'm in and around the first team, then I can push on here. If not, I'll look to go out on loan and go from there. I'm very open-minded and positive towards everything this season. "The new manager coming in could be good for me because he doesn't know anything about me. If I can impress in pre-season, then who knows what could happen?"

Former West Ham star Calum Davenport 'butted' sister
BBC.co.uk
10:13 GMT, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 11:13 UK

Footballer Calum Davenport denies attacking his sister A Premiership footballer attacked his pregnant sister after turning up drunk at her Bedfordshire home in the middle of the night, a court has heard. Former West Ham defender Calum Davenport, 27, of Moors View, Greenfield, called her a "whore" before headbutting her, Luton Crown Court was told. Her boyfriend then tracked down Mr Davenport and stabbed him. Mr Davenport denies causing actual bodily harm to his sister Cara, 29. Prosecutor Beverley Cripps said Mr Davenport's sister Cara was asleep in the house along with her four-year-old son Calum Junior when Mr Davenport and his father woke her up at 0200 BST on 22 August last year. "He went there when he was drunk and his father was also drunk. "They started putting questions to her. Unfortunately the questions were made in terms that were very abusive. "Cara's son Calum Junior is mixed race and his father is unfortunately in jail. "The father of the child she was carrying is also a mixed race gentleman."
The prosecutor said Mr Davenport called his sister a "whore" and made abusive comments. In the porch, Mr Davenport is said to have pushed his sister in the face so she fell back onto the stairs. He started to headbutt her and in the struggle bit her cheek. She managed to escape from her brother and contacted her boyfriend Worrell Whitehurst. He tracked the player to Mr Davenport's mother's house and stabbed him repeatedly in the leg, nearly ending his career. Whitehurst has pleaded guilty to a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on Calum Davenport and causing actual bodily harm to his mother Kim Stupple, who had tried to get in between them.
The trial continues.

Attack accused footballer was 'defending father'
14:27 GMT, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 15:27 UK
BBC.co.uk

Footballer Calum Davenport denies attacking his sister A footballer who attacked his pregnant sister was trying to protect his father, a court has heard. Former West Ham player Calum Davenport is accused of attacking his sister Cara after she fell pregnant again by a different man, Luton Crown Court heard. Mr Davenport called the mother-of-one a "form of cancer" in a row over how she was going to support the child, the court was told. Mr Davenport denies causing actual bodily harm to Miss Davenport. The court was told Mr Davenport, of Greenfields, Bedford, headbutted his 28-year-old sister five or six times before biting her cheek during the attack at her home in Collie Road, Bedford, in the early hours of 22 August last year.
Mr Davenport said he was acting in self-defence and had stepped in after his sister, who was seven weeks pregnant, started punching his father Curtis. He told police he had drunk eight pints of lager over six hours following a golf competition before going with his father to his sister's home. They drank tea before an argument began over how she was going to pay for her second child. The court heard Mr Davenport told officers: "My dad put the question to her, 'Are you sure this is what you want because this is it?' "As he said that to her she went for my dad and started hitting him around the face. That's why I got in between and grabbed her wrists. "We fell over and smashed heads. She was going mental at this point and I put my head to her head and we collided heads on two or three occasions. "I did see my sister had bruises to her face which I apologise for."
Pc Vito Napoli told the court Miss Davenport had claimed in a statement following the incident that her brother had racially abused her, something she later denied in court. She said that when Mr Davenport and his father arrived at her house demanding a beer, a row erupted over how she was going to pay for her second child. The court heard the former England under-21 footballer regularly paid for her four-year-old son Calum Junior's clothes, holidays and also helped her with rent. Miss Davenport said she went to push her father away from the house, but her brother intervened, bundling her back into the house against the stairs. After repeatedly head-butting her, he grabbed her by the hair and battered her head against a wall as her son shouted "get off my mummy, get off my mummy", the court heard. The case continues.

West Ham are being linked with a move for teenage striking sensation Neymar da Silva. The 18-year-old striker - who scored FIVE goals for current club Santos in one game earlier this year - has been linked with a string of clubs in recent weeks but could be set to join the Hammers on a season-long loan deal, according to reports. Manchester City were reported earlier in the year to have secured first refusal on the 5'8" striker although Chelsea are now thought to be favourites to land the player on a permanent basis.

Elsewhere the Mirror are linking United with an audacious £10million move for Nice striker Loic Remy. The 23-year-old, who can also operate on the flanks and in midfield, had previously expressed a desire to join Arsenal - a team he claims to have supported as a boy - although that deal is unlikely to go through following Arsenal's capture of another former United target, Marouane Chamakh.

Also linked with a move to England, this time by The Sun, is 22-year-old Mexican Efrain Juarez. The paper claims that West Ham are 'lining up' a £6million bid - although this one should be treated with a degree of caution due to Avram Grant already having his full quota of midfielders. With regard to other targets - namely Portsmouth's Kevin-Prince Boateng and Nigerian duo Vincent Enyeama and Yakubu Ayegbeni, both of whom worked with Grant in Israel - there is no fresh news, although Boateng has been heavily linked with a move to Italy since impressing in the World Cup Finals.

The great and the good
KUMB.com

By: Kit Robinson

I am sure that fans of other Premier League teams feel that their clubs input into England, with regard to important players or the number of their players, is as important as West Ham's, whether its Spurs, Chelsea or Man United.

Of course we have to put up with the media portrayal of our club as the has-been minnows who believe 'we won the World Cup', rather than the fact we have continuously supplied many England squad players over the years.

It is the case though that the current England squad is full of players who West Ham fans have seen raised at our club and leave to play for other clubs. The fact is that players such as Ferdinand, Lampard, Cole, Johnson, Defoe etc are good players, but they are not great. They play a lot better with the talent around them on the pitch at club level at better clubs than West Ham and sadly the vast majority of the talent which surrounds them is foreign.

Frank Lampard for instance was a good player at West Ham but was limited by the lack of quality players around him and that is why he only scored below 10 goals a season with us. Whilst at Chelsea we see him score double that because of the players around him doing a lot of the graft in order to leave him free to get into the box to score, and so his goal tally is double what he scored with us. I am sure that Everton fans could argue the same about Wayne Rooney when he was with them and whilst with England.

A major reason why the Premier League sells so well globally is because of the interest of foreign fans watching their compatriots and national representatives playing in it, not only because of their nationality but also their skill. English fans of the Premier League view world football through the Premier League bubble. We believe we see the best of world football because we have expensive foreign players playing in it.

However, you only have to look at a team like Mexico to see that the vast majority of those players do not play in the Premier League but the overall ability of the team in passing and control (as typified by Guillermo Franco) is better than the vast majority of English players. Particularly if you consider that those basic skills are better than the majority of England squad members despite them being considered to be the cream of the English crop.

I believe that this is proven by the continually minimal number of English players playing abroad. The reason being, English players are simply nowhere near the same level of overall skill as foreign players. Real Madrid could afford the likes of Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard. They are not considered because they are overpaid in the Premier League for how good they are.

The fact is, that there are vastly more skilled players in leagues around the world, however, this top talent helps our English players in the Premier League. Take those foreign players away and surround them with other English players and they all become above average rather than the exceptional talent we believe they are week in, week out. It would be very interesting to see how well a team of solely English players would do playing a season either in England or even abroad.

You only have to look at the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish national team to see this theory in action. There are in effect, two winning teams in the SPL, Rangers and Celtic. They have a few Scottish players but the majority are foreign. Now look at their national team. It consists of second-rate players and this is slowly what is happening to England. So what can be done to halt this decline and improve the English talent?

The theory is that by having foreign players playing in the Premier League that this somehow rubs off on the up and coming kids at each club. There is an element of that being the case but then that can be counteracted by the argument that there are so many foreign players that the English players will simply not get a game. Evidence of this is the number of English players at our top clubs who are leaving so they can get regular football. I believe that Scott Parker is a good example of this. However, at the same time this also reinforces the assertion that they are simply not as good as the foreign players.

The great thing about a World Cup is that it opens our eyes to talent across the world, playing in other leagues. Sadly at this world cup it has shown very clearly that other footballers around the world are basically better than we are and certainly not how good we like to think we are. I fear though that until the Premier League bubble bursts, and considering the near demise of both West Ham and Portsmouth it looks like it is reaching bursting point, little will change.

Because of similar financial difficulties to the Premier League in Serie A in Italy, recently there has been a decline in the number of foreign players in Italy and look what happened to Italy in this world cup. It will take time but I am certain that because of the necessity in investing in Italian youth, Italy will rise again on the world stage.

Of course I am not suggesting the removal of foreign talent from the English game but for the sake of developing English talent through youth systems and making sure those players actually get to play regularly at the top level, and to counter the financial difficulties apparent in the game, a similar approach to the Italian model needs to be implemented. It will mean a drop in skill for a while but so long as the infrastructure is imposed in the same way as the German's also have and how Sir Trevor Brooking has tried to insist upon to the FA, then the level of skill will rise again but it will take time.

We have a great youth structure in the UK, West Ham obviously have their very successful academy and as a club really need to work on not only developing those players but retaining them. Obviously other clubs have great youth systems such as Man Utd and Everton and others but there does seem to be a trend, particularly from the likes of Arsenal, in raising the foreign talent from a youth level. It is time for the emphasis to be on English youth players, developing them, and spending the money saved on transfer fees to retain their services. However of course, teams like West Ham will forever have the 'I want to play Champions League football' argument to contend with.

Sullivan and Gold have already stated that our Academy is vital. It's difficult to believe how West Ham United Football Club has survived without it. In fact it wouldn't have and quite rightly Tony Carr has received his deserved MBE. But it is not just West Ham that need an academy to survive and prosper, English Football desperately needs it too.

Young full back Jordan Brown has signed pro terms with West Ham United. The youth team captain, who plays mainly on the left side of defence becomes the fourth Academy youngster to sign a professional contract this summer as the club looks to bring through the next batch of youngsters. Talking to whufc.com following the signing of his new contract, Benfleet-born Brown - the cousin of Sunderland winger Kieron Richardson - said: "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it's the best news I've heard. This is what I've always wanted to do. I've been confident the whole way through and have always worked hard to pursue my dream. I've seen loads of boys come and go, some of whom were really good players, so to come through is something special."

Pumas - No bids for Juarez
Mexican club confirm West Ham have not made offer for full-back

Pumas have denied that West Ham have made a bid for Mexico international defender Efrain Juarez. Juarez and team-mate Pablo Barrera have both impressed during the World Cup finals and have been linked with moves away from the Mexican club. Lazio have made a move for winger Barrera, while West Ham have been strongly linked with a swoop for full-back Juarez. "We know that during a World Cup many teams eye players and ask about them, but we have to stay calm because sometimes it's only that," Pumas sports director Mario Trejo said. "We will only consider anything if they have a real interest once they send us an offer. "
Trejo confirmed Lazio's interest, admitting: "We have received a fax in our offices sent by Lazio in which they asked us about the situation of Pablo Barrera and if there were any chances of starting a negotiation. "Our president has answered that Pumas accepts to talk about negotiations so it is supposed that in the next hours they should send us an offer."
And on the interest in Juarez, he added: "The same happens with Efarin Juarez. We haven't received any offer but his agent has said to us that some teams have approached him asking about the player but they haven't sent anything to us for the moment."

West Ham legend Steve Potts confident Avram Grant can improve the Hammers

Former West Ham defender Steve Potts believes new manager Avram Grant can bring the glory days back to Upton Park following consecutive seasons staving off the threat of relegation. Grant joined West Ham in early June having left relegated side Portsmouth and the former Chelsea boss is seen by Hammers legend Potts as experienced enough to lead West Ham in a positive direction domestically. "Avram Grant has had some big jobs, " Potts told West Ham's official website. "There is a lot of experience there and hopefully he can turn the club round. "There are people in place to put it right. "It is Avram's job to sort out the playing side and hopefully they can move on and do better than last year." Potts spent over 17 years playing for West Ham, making 399 league appearances and scoring just one goal in a 7-1 demolition of Hull City in 1990.

Brazil goalkeeper Doni tipped for West Ham as Roma look to take Valon Behrami in exchange
Daily Mail
Last updated at 4:37 PM on 29th June 2010

Roma have joined the race to sign West Ham United wide man Valon Behrami. Reports in Italy suggest the 25-year-old former Lazio player is keen on a return to the 'Eternal City', but the two clubs are thought to be some way apart in how they value Behrami. West Ham are prepared to listen to bids for the Switzerland international, which has also alerted Palermo, and a £8.5million fee has been mooted. However, Roma are reluctant to even match the £5m that the Hammers paid Genoa for Behrami five years ago and the Serie A side would rather take him on an initial loan. A compromise could be to offer Brazil goalkeeper Doni in part-exchange. The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Olympic Stadium and has previously been offered to Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham. However, the West Ham hierarchy's hopes of selling off current No 1 Robert Green for a bumper fee have been hit by the England international's World Cup to forget.

Remy rejects Hammers in favour of Arsenal move

Nice have reportedly rejected an offer from West Ham for forward Loic Remy, with the striker issuing a come and get me plea to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. Remy, dubbed the "New Henry" is a confirmed target of Arsenal boss Wenger and is on the Frenchman's summer shortlist, however the new Hammer's boss Avram Grant is eager to sign the highly rated forward to spearhead his new Boleyn Ground attack.

The 23-year-old French attacker has scored 14 goals in 34 Ligue 1 appearances this term and hopes that his exploits have been enough to turn the head of Europe's elite, as Gunner's boss Arsene Wenger and Hammer's gaffer Avram Grant weigh up their respective summer transfer window options. Arsenal boss Wenger has had Remy watched on a number of occasions by Chief French Scout Gilles Grimandi, with the scout admitting publicly that Remy has the potential to be an Arsenal player. The former Arsenal utility man said in January: "He has one of the greatest potentials in France and perhaps even in Europe over the next five years. But we are looking for a player who will enhance our strength very quickly because we lack this." According to the French press West Ham are preparing a bid in the region of £8 million, with Grant hoping to clinch the striker's signature with Wenger having swooped for the Bosman signing of Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh.

According to the French press Remy is not interested in a move to West Ham, and is only interested in leaving Nice for a move to the Emirates, with the player stating on a number of occasions his admiration for Wenger and his eagerness to follow in the footsteps of Gunner's legend Thierry Henry. While interest from West Ham and Avram Grant intensifies Remy has voiced officially that his preferred destination is the Emirates stadium. In May Remy issued an open come and get me plea to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "Arsenal are the club I want to join. I won't deny they are my priority. Arsenal are a young, ambitious side and I love to watch them play," he recently told RMC. "It is the ideal place for me. I spoke with Thierry [Henry] about them and asked him lots of questions about life there. "That is because I have been an Arsenal fan since I was little. I was not disappointed with what he told me."

It is unknown whether Arsenal have formally contacted the club, however Arsene Wenger did hint earlier this summer following the arrival of Marouane Chamakh that he was only looking to strengthen defensively at the Emirates stadium.

Behrami wants to join Roma Tuesday 29 June, 2010
Football-italia.net
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West Ham United's former Lazio full-back Valon Behrami is keen to return to Italy and join Roma this summer. The Swiss international is up for sale and Roma are in the market for a defender after selling their remaining stake in Marco Motta to Udinese. Il Corriere dello Sport understands that Behrami has told his agent he would like a move to Roma even though it will almost certainly inflame Lazio's supporters. West Ham have set an asking price believed to be around €6m for Behrami and his ordinary World Cup campaign means his value is unlikely to have increased. Roma's No 1 priority this summer is to sign Nicolas Burdisso on a permanent basis from Inter, but first they will have to sell someone, most likely Julio Baptista. The same goes for Behrami who is just one among several candidates for Roma's backline.

Former England goalkeeper Richard Wright to snub West Ham United & join Crystal Palace - report
29 Jun 2010 09:41:00
Goal.com

Former England and Ipswich Town goalkeeper Richard Wright is believed to be on the verge of rejecting a chance to join West Ham United, and will instead reunite with his former boss George Burley at Crystal Palace. The 32-year-old shot-stopper was previously reported to be a target for the Hammers, who were thought to be on the lookout for a back-up to current first-choice 'keeper Robert Green. But The Daily Mail reports that Wright - who has also had spells at Arsenal and Everton - is set to give the Hammers the cold shoulder and walk into Selhurst Park instead. It is believed that the arrival of the namesake of one of the the founding members of Pink Floyd could herald the exit of Julian Speroni to either QPR or - ironically - West Ham.

Blair the scholar
WHUFC.com
Promising midfielder Blair Turgott cannot wait to start life as a full-time West Ham United scholar
29.06.2010

For many of Blair Turgott's friends, the summer holidays are just beginning. In the case of the West Ham United and England Under-16 midfielder, the hard work is about to start. Just a few days after completing his GCSE examinations, Turgott will join 12 of his old schoolboy team-mates at Little Heath to begin lives as full-time scholars. Turgott enjoyed a superb 2009/10 season, excelling for both club and country. Not only did the 16-year-old make 12 FA Premier Academy League and FA Youth Cup appearances for the Hammers, but he also found time to help England win the Victory Shield and reach the final of the prestigious Montaigu Tournament in France in April. "Last season was a good season, to be fair. I think we did well. Personally I put in some good performances, so I was happy. "We had a good team both individually and all together. Hopefully we can push on both individually and as a team for the Under-18s. "It was hard at first to get used to it and to adapt to the physical side of it. Facing stronger players was difficult, but I think I got better as I went along and got used to the whole thing."
Turgott is naturally delighted to have been offered a scholarship for the club he has represented since the age of eight, but he knows there are still many hurdles to jump before he can celebrate becoming a Barclays Premier League footballer. "It's good to have the security of two years, but this is where the work starts really. I want to really push on and get into the first-team squad as quickly as possible. "I've been here since the Under-9s. I've improved every season and have been playing all this time to get my scholarship and now I've got it."
While Turgott's immediate aim is to cement his place in Academy Director Tony Carr's U18s, the talented teenager is also hoping to represent England at U17 level. "I'll be an Under-17 this season and hopefully both myself and Matthias [Fanimo] can push on and continue to be involved with England. We're looking forward to the tournament, as there is nothing better than representing your country. "We have got a good team. We won the Victory Shield and got to the final of the Montaigu Tournament before losing on penalties, so hopefully we'll continue doing well. I was unbeaten at Under-16 level, because I don't consider penalties losing - that was a draw in my book!"
Alongside Turgott and Fanimo, England U17 forward Robert Hall, goalkeepers Jake Larkins and David Wootton, defenders Danny Potts, Kenzer Lee and Jake Young, midfielders Dominic Vose, Jack Powell, Declan Hunt, Lamar Hurley and forward Dylan Tombides will all begin life as scholars on Monday 5 July.

Saturday deadline for price freeze
WHUFC.com
Supporters will have to move fast if they want to make sure they hang on to their season ticket
29.06.2010

Fans have limited time left to take advantage of the price freeze on season tickets. The renewal deadline is 5pm this Saturday, 3 July, meaning those who get their application in before will be able to take advantage of the price freeze on last season - save for the Government's VAT increase. New applicants can also benefit from this great offer, provided of course they contact the club in time.

After the deadline, there will be an increase of 2.5 per cent on season ticket prices. Also, fans should note that any prime season tickets unsold will be made available to those who have already approached the club looking to snap up the best possible views.

With two major London rivals among the first to visit the Boleyn Ground, the enthusiasm and expectation is building for the new campaign. Chairman David Sullivan said: "This is a very challenging opening with both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in our first three games at home. I know the fans will be up for it and we need their support to help us in two big derby matches.

"It is a very tricky start to the season with three of the top four teams from last season in the first six games and the 'easier' games are Aston Villa and Stoke away! That is why we acted quickly this summer to bring in a new manager and start rebuilding the squad so that we can hit the ground running once it all gets going in August."

With a new manager in place in Avram Grant and Thomas Hitzlsperger leading the way for a raft of new signings, optimism is high for the 2010/11 campaign among the first team as well. The new recruits will complement the club's talented youngsters and seasoned professionals like Robert Green and Scott Parker.

If you cannot wait for the Barclays Premier League to get under way, remember the club has arranged a glamour pre-season friendly against RC Deportivo La Coruna at the Boleyn Ground at 3pm on Saturday 7 August. Jordan joins
WHUFC.com
Youth-team captain Jordan Brown has agreed his first professional contract with West Ham United
28.06.2010

West Ham United are pleased to confirm that Under-18 prospect Jordan Brown has agreed his first professional contract with the club. The powerful, attack-minded left-back has been a central figure in Tony Carr's side over the past two seasons, making 45 FA Premier Academy League and FA Youth Cup appearances since his debut in a home win over Millwall in January 2008. Academy Director Carr identified Brown's leadership qualities, handing him the captain's armband for much of the 2009/10 season. Brown has also featured seven times at Barclays Premier Reserve League South level since making his debut as a substitute at Portsmouth in April 2009. A hard tackler who is strong in the air and composed in possession, the 18-year-old caught the eye during Carr's testimonial match in May 2010, getting forward regularly and providing an assist for youth-team colleague Cristian Montano.
The cousin of Sunderland and England midfielder Kieran Richardson, who he shared a pitch with for the first time during Carr's testimonial, Brown was initially spotted playing for Kingdown Rovers in his hometown of Benfleet, Essex as an Under-8. Having begun his career as a forward, Brown also turned out as a left winger and a centre-back before settling into his preferred role at left-back at the age of 15. "It's been a long time coming, but now I've signed my first contract it has made all the hard work worthwhile and is a good start," Brown told whufc.com "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but it's the best news I've heard. This is what I've always wanted to do. I've been confident the whole way through and have always worked hard to pursue my dream. I've seen loads of boys come and go, some of whom were really good players, so to come through is something special. "People who I haven't seen me for a while ask me if I'm still at West Ham and they can't believe I'm still here! It's only a start, though. I've got to impress. Hopefully I can do my bit, just like every other player wants to do their bit."

Brown broke into the reserve team midway through last season and is concentrating on establishing himself in Alex Dyer's side, while also catching the eye of new manager Avram Grant. "It's a new start for me and a new start for everyone. This season, I want to be in the reserves on a regular basis and I also hope to go out on loan because I've never played for any club other than West Ham - apart from Kingdown Rangers, of course!"

Brown was accompanied at his contract signing by his parents, who have been regular visitors to Little Heath over the past decade, delivering and collecting their son from training and watching him in action on Saturday mornings. "My parents have supported me the whole way through and I'm happy to have a family like them behind me all the time. They've been a great help."

As well as his famous cousin Richardson, the youngster also looks to West Ham's own Herita Ilunga, England defender Ashley Cole and France full-back Patrice Evra for pointers on how to improve his own game. Brown is the fourth Academy graduate to agree his first professional contract with the club this summer, following Montano and centre-back Callum McNaughton. A fourth second-year scholar, forward Ahmed Abdulla, will also become a professional after joining from Arsenal in summer 2008. First-year professionals Anthony Edgar, Matt Fry and Olly Lee have also agreed new contracts for 2010/11.

New season excites Potts
WHUFC.com
Steve Potts is like all Hammers fans when he says he cannot wait for the new campaign to start
28.06.2010

FIFA World Cup dreams may be over but that has simply served to focus the attention on the new club season and, according to Steve Potts, there is every reason to be excited. The Hammers great is looking forward to 2010/11 and believed the new manager Avram Grant can go from strength to strength. "There is a lot of optimism," Potts said, during an extended interview with WHUTV. " Avram Grant has had some big jobs. There is a lot of experience there and hopefully he can turn the club round. There are people in place to put it right. It is Avram's job to sort out the playing side and hopefully they can move on and do better than last year."
The two-time Hammer of the Year came through the ranks himself at the Boleyn and he is also encouraged by the plans to further promote the Academy. His son Daniel, unsurprisingly a promising full-back, has just signed scholarship forms with the club and Potts believed he was in the best possible place for his football education. "I am pleased for Daniel. He has been here since he was six or seven years old. To get a scholarship is a reward for how hard he is worked but the hard work starts now. With West Ham if you are good enough, you will get a chance. That is not the case at some clubs. You have always seen the young players coming through and the rowd appreciates that. It is down to the player then to make the most of it."

Remy calm over transfer talk
West Ham reported to have made move for French starlet

Loic Remy has told skysports.com he is 'relaxed' about his future, amid reports that West Ham United have made a bid for him. The 23-year-old striker is rated as one of the best prospects in Ligue 1 and has already been capped by France. Labelled as the 'New Thierry Henry' for a number of years, Remy opted to leave Lyon for Nice in 2008 and he has impressed ever since. French champions Marseille and his former club Lyon, are very keen on Remy, whilst Italian clubs AC Milan and Fiorentina were strongly linked last year. Arsene Wenger is thought to be a long-term admirer of Remy but West Ham are now reported to have firmed up their interest. French sources claim The Hammers have lodged a bid of €12million (£9.8million) However, it is also claimed that West Ham offered to pay the fee in three instalments of €4million - which Nice have rebuffed as they want most of the money up-front. The player himself insists he is letting Nice decide on his future. "I am returning back to training this week," Remy told skysports.com. "I am still a Nice player. If they decide to sell me, I will listen to offers and see what we can do, but I am relaxed and if nothing happens, I will be happy to stay here."

Clubs eye Simpson move
Battle on for Arsenal starlet
Last updated: 28th June 2010

Jay Simpson could be set to leave Arsenal this summer and a host of clubs are set to battle it out for his signature. The young forward is a product of the Gunners' highly-famed academy but is yet to make his Premier League debut. The 21-year-old has played for Arsenal in the Carling Cup and scored two goals in a 3-0 victory in his only ever start over Wigan, but he has never made a league appearance for the club and now looks set to leave. Simpson has spent much of the last three seasons on loan, with Millwall, West Brom and last term with Queens Park Rangers - where he hit double figures in the Championship. However, despite being highly thought of at Arsenal they are prepared to let him leave as he seeks regular first-team football. News of Simpson's availability is set to alert a host of clubs in the Premier League and Championship. West Ham, Fulham and Blackpool are all thought to be considering whether to offer him a Premier League chance, whilst Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff, Leicester City and QPR are all keen. Nigel Pearson looks set to become the Hull City manager and will also probably have Simpson on his hit list. His advisor Uben Gray confirmed Simpson could leave the Emirates Stadium. "Jay has had discussions with Arsene Wenger and Arsenal," he told skysports.com. "Everyone at the club only has good things to say about Jay, including Arsene, but they appreciate he needs to be playing first-team football. "And so they are ready to let him leave, but only if the deal is right for all parties." Simpson currently has a year left on his contract at Arsenal.

The 22-year-old, who can play in central midfield and at right-back, is keen on a switch to the Premier League. West Ham officials are trying to keep the move under wraps, but boss Avram Grant is keen to wrap up a deal quickly.
Now the Hammers are hoping to finalise the switch in the next few weeks following Mexico's exit from the World Cup. Meanwhile, the club has launched an ambitious £10m bid to sign prolific Nice striker Loic Remy, 23, a target for Arsenal.

Dozy Hammers target fails English test
Published 23:00 28/06/10 By James Nursey
The Mirror

Christian Benitez has flunked his work permit English test for a second time. Ecuador striker Benitez, 24, is looking for another Premier League club after leaving Birmingham following a season-loan. West Ham have contacted Benitez's club Santos Laguna about taking the forward for a season with a view to a permanent deal. But Mirrorsport exclusively revealed in May that dozy Benitez failed a government required English test. Rules for migrants mean they must have a recognised qualification for speaking English if they are to remain in the country on a work permit. And he must now re-sit the test AGAIN this summer if he is to return to the UK after botching the paperwork for a second time. The hitman, who notched four goals for City, is valued at around £7.5million by his Mexican club. Hammers' owner David Sullivan, who took Benitez to St Andrews, is not willing to shell out for the striker. But Sullivan rates the forward and thinks he may fulfil his potential during a second season on loan in the Premier League.
