Bishop's Stortford preview
WHUFC.com
Alex Dyer will lead a West Ham United XI side to Woodside Park for a
pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening
05.08.2009

A West Ham United XI side will travel to Bishop's Stortford on Wednesday
evening on a high after hitting three goals in each of their last two games.
Alex Dyer is expected to name a similar side to that which swept aside
Kingstonian 3-0 on Friday for the short trip to face The Blues, who finished
ninth in the the Blue Square South last season.

Nigel Quashie is expected to captain the side once more, but it is the
inclusion of the youthful attacking options that is set to get supporters'
pulses racing. The striking duo of Frank Nouble, with three goals in his two
games since signing from Chelsea, and Anthony Edgar caused the K's back line
no end of problems last week, and their attacking prowess could be
supplemented by the likes of Zavon Hines and Savio following their return
from the Barclays Asia Trophy in China.

At the back, youngsters Holmar Eyjolfsson and Matt Fry, who handled the size
and experience of former Hammer Ian Pearce so well at Kingsmeadow, could be
joined by Bondz N'Gala and Jordan Spence following their return from the
east. It remains to be seen whether new signing Fabio Daprela has had enough
time to adjust to his new surroundings following his arrival from
Grasshopper Club Zurich to play a part.

Other youngsters that could feature in the game following their Chinese
adventure are goalkeepers Peter Kurucz, Marek Stech and midfielder Josh
Payne, giving Dyer a dearth of options throughout his team.

whufc.com will have live text updates from Woodside Park, where kick-off is
at 7.30pm. Admission is £10 for adults, £5 for concessions. For directions,

Meanwhile, West Ham United Under-18s continue their preparations for the new
season with game at Reading on Wednesday morning. whufc.com will have
details of the result as soon as it is finished.

Hammers youngster ready to make an impact
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 5th August 2009
By: Thomas Rooney

With the season a little over two weeks away, it is fair to say that the
majority of West Ham fans will be looking forward to the first game. Every
football fan across the country has had enough of the pre-season shenanigans
and is desperate for the competitive stuff to start, particularly since it
provides a good excuse for placing some football bets!

There is a West Ham youngster who is feeling exactly the same as this. Zavon
Hines – who managed to score for the Hammers in Beijing recently – is eager
for the season to start so that he can force himself into first team action.
The 20-year-old has got a taste for first-team football in Beijing and now
he wants more. Scoring a goal in pre-season has increased his determination
to start scoring Premier League goals. He wants to be part of Gianfranco
Zola's thinking in the early part of the season.

Speaking about the months ahead, Hines said that he wants to 'show the
manager what I can do' and be 'involved as much as I can'. Clearly, he feels
that his time has come to make an impact.

As for the pre-season games in the Barclays Asia Trophy, Hines said that it
has been a 'good tournament to play in' ahead of a tough campaign in the
Premier League. The striker says that the hard work the squad have put in
will 'show well for us' come the first game against Wolves.

In terms of his specific aims for the season ahead, Hines revealed that he
wants to be 'on the bench' from the very first game. Then, when he is given
the nod from Zola to get himself ready to come on, he will do all he can to
make the most of his chance.

A late winner or a crucial assist after coming off the bench late on would
do wonders for Hines' confidence and his place in the Upton Park striker
pecking order. It is one step at a time for him, but by Christmas for
example, who is to say that he won't be starting games for West Ham?

This time last year, he certainly looked like making a huge impact on West
Ham's season. He notched five goals in six games during pre-season and
showed a fantastic scoring ability. However, he suffered a knee problem
before the campaign began and ended up only playing one game all year.

This is why the next couple of months are so important to Hines. He deserves
to stay fit and he deserves to be given his opportunity at first-team level.
Good luck Zavon!

Choke City?

Stoke City are set to sign Hammers striker Dean Ashton, according to local
radio reports. However another source close to Stoke insisted this morning
that the club are set to pull out of the race to sign the permanently
crocked former Norwich striker. Local radio in Stoke carried a report first
thing this morning suggesting that the Potters were about to seal a deal to
sign the 25-year-old, said to be worth around £6m (rising to £10m). However
local paper the Sentinel insist that the opposite is true, claiming that
Tony Pulis is set to turn his attention elsewhere due to concerns over
Ashton's long-term fitness (concerns which apparently failed to materialise
previously). West Ham - who have refrained from commenting on the situation
regarding the once-capped England striker - have refused to confirm that
they would be willing to part with Ashton, who has started just 33 league
games since signing from Norwich for £7million in January 2006. However with
funds tight and Gianfranco Zola looking to expand his attacking options
ahead of the new season the sale of Ashton to facilitate such reinvestment
is not beyond the realms of possibility. Elsewhere Bayern Munich have
released a statement confirming that 32-year-old striker Luca Toni is not
for sale, after recent speculation hinted at possible interest from the
Hammers.

Summer bargains
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 5th August 2009
By: Matthew Kemp

With the season just around the corner, and little transfer activity from CB
Holdings, there is cause for concern that with any potential injuries,
Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke will be fielding their third string against
some very strong Premier League sides.

Money is clearly tight, and the spin doctors were out in force once the
creditors of Landsbanki and Bjorgolfur Gudmunsson confirmed the ownership of
West Ham United PLC.

With little interest in Calum Davenport and Nigel Quashie, Zola is
struggling to find the funds for a reserve goalkeeper, potential right back
(If Lucas Neill doesn't sign) and at least two proven strikers.

There are also a few noises surrounding Matthew Upson's future, and with two
years left on his contract and a reluctance to commit his long term future
we could be faced with Danny Gabbidon, James Collins and James Tomkins as
our recognised centre halves, plus Davenport (if he apologises for his
previous outbursts).

Many managers have proved in the past they can build a team on pennies
rather than pounds. Look at Ian Holloway when he was at Bristol Rovers -
Barry Hayles; Bobby Zamora; Nathan Ellington; Jason Roberts; Devon White;
Jamie Cureton; Marcus Stewart. Players that in their league regularly
finished as top scorers.

So what bargains are out there? Well Sol Campbell is worth a punt on a free,
maybe for a one year contract, or how about Michael Ball who has been
released from Manchester City? Nicky Weaver as back-up goalkeeper - worth a
trial having been released by Charlton?

There has to be some loan potential as well. It looks like Sunderland have
beaten us to Mendy yet Man Utd, Arsenal and Real Madrid are flooded with
players who wont get a game next season....a season's loan with a Premier
League club has to be tempting?

In terms of strikers, £5m for Eidur Gudjohnson sounds a fair deal - surely
we have that in the kitty?

Savio and Nouble offer potential, yet we already had that in Sears - and it
was sensible to give him a season in the Championship for him to prove that
he has what it takes. I was gobsmacked that we didn't put an offer in for
Leroy Lita - yes he's lost his form, yet he was also a £1m player, and
England under-21 and scoring goals for fun at one point in his career. Zola
could have restored that confidence.

Lastly, with our Italian connections I would have thought that Nani and Zola
would have been quick to sign up a few players who they've worked with in
the past. I know Savio has been one of those players, yet surely there are
more..?

I'm looking forward to the new season, yet on paper we are weaker than we
were at the end of last season. If we want to build on our momentum, we need
to add to the squad before the deadline window closes...

Bayern cool Toni Hammers talk
German giants reject speculation over front man
By Thomas Zocher Last updated: 5th August 2009

Bayern Munich have moved to cool talk linking star striker Luca Toni with a
surprise loan move to West Ham United. The Italian has been a key player
for the Bavarian giants since moving to the Allianz Arena in 2007 from
Fiorentina, but the summer captures of Mario Gomez and Ivica Olic have cast
doubt over his future. It has been speculated the World Cup winner could be
set for a spell on the substitutes' bench under new coach Louis van Gaal,
which has reportedly alerted Gianfranco Zola to his compatriot's potential
availability. West Ham are desperately short of firepower as they head into
the new campaign with Carlton Cole currently their only fit senior striker.
Zola has admitted interest in Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli and Eidur
Gudjohnsen of Barcelona but it is the name of Toni that has been mooted in
Germany. Bayern director of sport Christian Nerlinger, though, has denied
his club are in talks with their Premier League counterparts. "There is no
bid regarding Luca Toni," he told Munchener Merkur. "And we are not really
considering his future."

Skysports.com understands Sunderland are in talks with Lucas Neill regarding
a possible move to the Stadium of Light. The Australia international is a
free agent after his contract with West Ham United expired at the end of
last season. Gianfranco Zola is keen to re-sign Neill and it was reported an
agreement could have been struck by Monday, but the Hammers boss may see the
deal hijacked. Neill is understood to have been at Sunderland's hotel in
Peterborough ahead of Tuesday's pre-season friendly with the
freshly-promoted Championship outfit. Discussions are said to have taken
place between the 31-year-old and the Black Cats, who are rebuilding under
new manager Steve Bruce this summer.

Stoke City have gone cold over the prospect of bringing West Ham striker

thought the transfer is very much back on ice. City boss Tony Pulis has
been keenly investigating the possibility of signing the former Crewe

Kingstonian 0 West Ham United XI 3
10:53am Wednesday 5th August 2009
Guardian Series
By Phil Windeatt »

Kingstonian's last pre-season home game saw them tackle their biggest test
so far against a powerful West Ham side comprising of reserves, youth and
trialists, skippered by Scottish international Nigel Quashie. Although their
Premiership visitors were not surprisingly in control all game, with a
lovely pacy passing game, a determined Ks did threaten throughout and Ian
Pearce looked particularly dangerous upfront in the first half. The Ks next
friendly encounter is next Tuesday evening August 4th, 7.45pm k.o. when they
travel to Godalming Town. Next Saturday August 8th the K's travel to their
old rivals Leatherhead for another friendly with a kick-off time that has
been brought forward to 2pm. Ks didn't seem too inhibited by their esteemed
visitors and started strongly. Striker Carl Wilson-Denis sent in a high far
post cross from the right that Pearce headed wide. Then Pearce again got on
the end of a cross this time from the left but this time he headed over. On
12 minutes Irons striker Frank Nouble gave some idea of what was to come
when his powerful drive was parried by Luke Garrard. Fellow striker Antony
Edgar made it to the follow-up but again his well-struck drive was blocked
by the K's skipper. On 22 minutes the Hammers took the lead when Edgar sent
in a dangerous curling free-kick from the left into the Ks goalmouth where
centre back MATT FRY swept the ball home first time past a stranded Garrard.
Then Edgar took off on a long penetrating run and unleashed a powerful low
drive that went wide.
The Ks heads didn't drop, Lewis Cook sent in a useful far post cross for
Wilson-Denis but stretching he just failed to connect. Ryan Lake then found
Wilson-Denis in the Irons box where his powerful header was smothered by
keeper Adam Street at full-stretch. A long through ball from Liam Collins
found Pearce who set NJ Lampton free in the away box but he overran the
ball. On 29 minutes a classy individual goal when FRANK NOUBLE took off into
the K's box, he shook off the attentions of Max Hustwick, and fired past the
outcoming Garrard.
On 38 minutes the K's came back with some venegeance with a series of
consecutive corners. The best came from a short corner by Tommy Williams to
Cook who accurately found Pearce deep in the Irons box and his header looked
goalbound until a full-stretch Street pushed the ball out. Back came the
visitors when Olly Lee pushed a ball through to Edgar in the Ks box but
again Garrard saved the effort. Three minutes into the new half the Hammers
put the game to bed. Francis Duku tried to roll the ball back to Garrard but
the dangerous FRANK NOUBLE pounced, whisked the ball away and drove it into
an empty Ks goal. Williams replied with a powerful rising drive from the
edge of the away box that just went over. It was then time for an army of
substitutions and the game petered away as a spectacle. On the hour Quashie,
on the edge of the Ks box, was unlucky when his drive struck a post, with
Garrard looking on. A Cook free-kick from way out on the right saw a diving
Street in a crowded box punch the ball away. On 75 minutes Ks sub Christian
Jolley's edge of the box strike brought off a full-stretch save from Hammers
sub keeper James Plazzi. A free-kick from K's sub Luke Pigden saw Plazzi do
well to hang onto the ball. Plazzi then punched clear another Pigden
set-piece. The visitors possession was impressive and energy sapping for the
home side but the Ks kept chasing. With three minutes to go a run from sub
Scott Simpson saw him hit the buffers in the visitors box, he still set up
Jolley close in but he blasted over.

Ks. Luke Garrard (capt) (sub Josh Willis, 66mins) 2. Jamie Beer (sub Rob
Sheridan, 56mins) 3. Ryan Lake (sub Tom Dilloway, 56mins) 4. Tommy Williams

Deja vu for Fulham five
WHUFC.com
The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK is set to benefit once again
from five fans
04.08.2009

West Ham United supporting brothers Paul and Ian Turner are planning to once
again walk to Fulham next season in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer
Research UK.

The duo did the 13-mile trek before last season's fixture at Craven Cottage
and have earmarked a repeat performance this season but this time by walking
the 13 miles back as well rather than getting the Tube home. The news comes
as the club prepare to stage the Bobby Moore Cup this Saturday against SSC
Napoli. Click here for more information.

Paul and Ian will have plenty of time to prepare as the Fulham fixture is
the final awayday for Gianfranco Zola's men in 2009/10 on Saturday 1 May.
What makes the plan even more impressive though is that they are running the
London Marathon the week before - also for the Bobby Moore Fund.

Also joining Paul and Ian on the Fulham walk will be their friends Matthew,
Scott and Adam, with the original idea being one that had long been mooted -
with ultimately the Bobby Moore Fund being the perfect choice to benefit
given the England legend's links to both clubs. "The idea to walk to Craven
Cottage from the Boleyn Ground was one me and Matthew had been kicking about
for some time," said Paul taking up the story.

"We would be down the pub saying that if the game fell on a Saturday and was
a 3pm kick off then we would do it. A season passed without us being able to
attend the match so we were determined last July to go ahead and actually
walk the 13 or so miles.

"My brother Ian and our friends Scott and Adam wanted to join in and so we
set about organising the event. The overwhelming choice to help raise funds
for was the Bobby Moore Fund, a charity all those who took part in the walk
have raised funds for in the past."

So on 27 September 2008, the quintet arranged to start their walk pitchside
at the Boleyn Ground and finished on the sidelines at Craven Cottage - with
the BBC Match of the Day 2 cameras also getting involved.

"It was quite foggy at the start but this did not dampen spirits as we set
off on our journey around the pitch, passing in front of the empty stands
and our season ticket seats, fittingly in the Bobby Moore Lower," Paul
added. "On the road itself the air was crisp and we got support from people
driving by honking their horns or shouting a few words of encouragement or
banter.

"Kevin Day, Louise Lawler and the rest of the BBC filming crew were very
friendly and supportive throughout our efforts and I have to thank them for
taking the time to help out our cause and highlight. When we made it to
Craven Cottage we were presented with a signed Fulham shirt and were greeted
warmly.

"All that walking made for sore feet but due to the volume of fans and our
tickets being towards the back of the Putney End, we were forced to stand
all match long! The pain was bearable as we won 2-1 and the joy left many
singing and indeed conga lining down Stevenage Road towards the Tube. A
great day out was had by all. West Ham won and money was raised for a worthy
cause, what more could you ask for?"

Tickets for West Ham United's final pre-season game with SSC Napoli in the
Bobby Moore Cup fixture with are selling well.

Saturday, with kick-off at 3pm. It will be the curtain-raiser for the new
Barclays Premier League season, with the big kick-off following a week later

The fixture will be the first chance for West Ham supporters to see the
club's summer signings in action at home, with Chile forward Luis Jimenez
among those who could feature alongside Hammer of the Year winner Scott
Parker and the fit-again Danny Gabbidon.

Napoli also possess a wealth of exciting players, including Slovakia
playmaker Marek Hamsik and their own new arrival, Italy striker Fabio
Quagliarella.

Fans requiring their tickets to be posted should be aware that Wednesday is
the final day for tickets to sent out. Prices are greatly reduced with
tickets available for as little as £10 to season ticket holders, £12 to club
members and £15 to non-members. All Under-16 tickets will be priced at £5,

Charity No. 1089464) to help tackle bowel cancer. In addition, West Ham
United will match each £1 raised to double the total amount donated to the
charity.

This initiative follows on from a number of events last season, which was
the first year of the formal three-year partnership agreement signed with
the Fund.

Hammers still on the hunt
KUMB.com
Filed: Tuesday, 4th August 2009
By: Staff Writer

West Ham United are still hoping to tie up one or two transfers ahead of the
start of 2009/10 Premier League campaign - despite kick-off being just 11
days away.

The Hammers have been left frustrated by their failure to land some of
Gianfranco Zola's main targets, meaning that the Italian boss could go into
the new season with just one new addition to his first team - Inter's
on-loan midfielder Luis Jimenez.

CEO Scott Duxbury revealed earlier in the summer that he had been hoping to
secure three new additions to boost Zola's first team options as early as
possible - yet bar last month's arrival of Jimenez, those are yet to
materialise.

One of those initial targets - Jimenez's former team mate Mancini - remains
on the radar, however the player is understood to be considering his options
still having been told recently that he is not part of Jose Mourinho's
future plans.

Whilst Gianfranco Zola recently expressed an interest in signing Barcelona
striker Eidur Gudjohnsen rumours linking the Hammers with a fresh move for
teenage striker Mario Balotelli are thought to be wide of the mark.

The search for a striker has become more urgent with Dean Ashton's failure
to appear in a single pre-season fixture, leaving Carlton Cole as the
squad's only fit, experienced striker.

Meanwhile talks with last season's club captain Lucas Neill over an extended
one-year contract continue; the Australian full-back, currently a free agent
is unhappy with the deal being offered by West Ham but hopes to thrash out
an agreement in time to see him start the new campaign at Wolves next
weekend.

Should the 31-year-old right-back reject United's offer, Julien Faubert -
who spend the latter part of last season on the bench at Real Madrid - is
expected to get the nod over Jonathan Spector for the vacant right-back
spot.

Matthew Upson - who led the team out against Tottenham in China last week -
is favourite to be named as Neill's potential successor as club captain.

West Ham in loan move for Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni/ Transfer gossip
05/08/2009
IMScouting.com

According to reports in the German press this morning, West Ham have
approached Bayern Munich to take Italian striker Luca Toni on loan. Toni is
not expected to receive much playing time under new coach Louis van Gaal,
with Mario Gomez now first choice at the Allianz Arena following his big
money move from Stuttgart. West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola is reportedly a
big fan of Luca Toni and is eager for him to spearhead the Hammers attack.
Luca Toni's wages of 5.5 million euros a year may be a stumbling block to
any deal, but if a loan move is agreed, Bayern would likely continue to pay
some part of his salary. The 32-year-old striker came to prominence at
Palermo and then Fiorentina, relatively late in his professional career. He
led the line for Italy as they won the World Cup in 2006 and then moved to
Bayern Munich. His first season at Bayern saw him score 24 goals in 31
games, his second campaign was less successful with 17 goals in 33
appearances as the Bavarian giants failed to reclaim their Bundesliga title.

Zola, Lee and Sheringham back in starting line-up
The teamsheets at Woodside Park, the modest home of Bishop's Stortford
Football Club, will have a distinctly nostalgic feel.
Telegraph.co.uk
By Jeremy Wilson
Published: 7:00PM BST 04 Aug 2009

West Ham United are the visitors and the names Zola and Lee are expected to
be among the starting line-up while a certain Sheringham is likely to be
leading the attack for Bishop's Stortford. Yet this is not some veterans'
match for ex-players trying to rediscover their lost youth but rather a full
pre-season friendly that just happens to involve the offspring of some of
the most illustrious Premier League footballers of the 1990s. Sport on
television Andrea Zola, the 18-year-old son of Gianfranco, will attract most
interest, largely because his father is now West Ham manager and remains
arguably the finest overseas 'import' in the history of English football.
Zola Jnr has already featured in pre-season friendlies against Thurrock and
Kingstonian and, while his involvement at the club is limited to a trial
with Alex Dyer's reserve team, he has made a positive initial impression.
The physical resemblance is immediately striking. At a little over 5ft 5in
tall and with a low and powerful centre of gravity, Andrea could almost
double for his father from a distance.
So might we see another Zola captivating the Premier League? "He has an eye
for a pass," said a club insider, "but at the moment he's just training and
playing a few games. We don't know where it might lead."
Andrea has certainly arrived at West Ham with a point to prove after leaving
Cagliari Calcio, the Zola family's home club in Sardinia and the final
destination in his father's long and illustrious playing career. Those in
England who have seen him this summer are cautiously impressed, though he
was not sufficiently integral to his father's plans for next season to
travel to China as part of a 23-man squad for the Premier League Asia
Trophy. He plays generally on the left and started alongside Nigel Quashie
as part of a three-man midfield in the 3-2 win against Thurrock. "He looked
a good player with potential but it would be a grave, grave mistake to
compare him to his father, who was very special," said Hakan Hayrettin, the
Thurrock manager. "If anyone could be half the player that Gianfranco Zola
was you would have a great chance of making it. Like any young player he has
to listen and learn. "He is fortunate who his father is but how far he
progresses is down to himself and the staff at West Ham."
There should be little problem in adapting to the culture of English
football. Andrea was only five when the Zola family moved to London in 1996.
Gianfranco spent seven years at Stamford Bridge and the experience clearly
left an impression. According to Andrea's Facebook page, he is a particular
fan of Chelsea and England captain John Terry. Following in the footsteps of
an illustrious sporting father, however, is never easy. Liam Botham tells
the story of arriving for his first cricket match at the age of 10 and being
greeted by a group of journalists who disappeared the moment he scored his
first run.
West Ham are keen to keep the spotlight off Andrea for now and will be
mindful that football history is littered with examples of sons following in
their father's footsteps with varying success.
Nigel Clough, Darren Ferguson, Gavin Strachan, Jamie Redknapp, Alex Bruce
and Paul Dalglish have all played at clubs managed by their father, while
Eidur Gudjohnsen replaced his dad Arnor, a fellow striker, during an
international game for Iceland in 1996. The Summerbees – George, Mike and
Nicky – could even boast three generations of professional footballers.
As well as Zola Jnr at West Ham, George Moncur, son of John, is with the
under-18 team, while Oliver and Elliot Lee, sons of Rob, are in the academy.
Oliver and Andrea should play together on Wednesday night in midfield
against a Bishop's Stortford team whose star striker is the 21-year-old
Charlie Sheringham. Charlie, son of Teddy, finished top scorer for Welling

West Ham striker Hines targets first team role
05.08.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United striker Zavon Hines was delighted with his form during their
Asian Trophy campaign. "It has been a good tournament to play in," Hines,
who scored five goals in six games in pre-season last year before suffering
a knee problem, told whufc.com. "The conditions were hard, but you just have
to work harder to get through it all and I am sure this will show well for
us come the new season. "Last year, I had a good pre-season and then got the
injury, but hopefully I can carry on this year and get through the season
with no injuries and be involved as much as I can with the first team. I
want to show the manager what I can do." Hines added: "My aim is at to be on
the bench for the first team for the start if I can, but just to do my best
in any game I play for West Ham United and go upwards from there."

Nordic glory for Hall
WHUFC.com
Robert Hall was on target as England's U17s won the Nordic International Youth Tournament
03.08.2009

West Ham United striker Robert Hall set England's Under-17s on course for Nordic International Youth Tournament glory. The 15-year-old scored England's first goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Scotland in the final, which was held at the Overlands Minde Stadium in Trondheim, Norway, on Sunday. Hall, who also scored his country's winner in the 1-0 semi-final victory over the host nation on Friday, set England on the comeback trail after the Scots had opened up a 2-0 lead. The teenager hit the net on 76 minutes to halve the deficit after Fraiser Fyvie and Jamie Walker had put Scotland two goals up at half-time. Middlesbrough's Ben Gibson levelled matters on 79 minutes - U17 football matches last only 80 minutes, so the equaliser arrived with just 60 seconds of normal time remaining - before Everton's Josh Bidwell put England ahead on 95 minutes. England held out for the remaining period to lift the trophy, capping a fine week for the country as a whole and Hall in particular. The youngster, who trained with the Hammers first-team squad for a week in July, also scored twice in the 8-0 group stage thrashing of the Faroe Islands, taking his tally to four in as many matches.

Hines hungry for more

Zavon Hines is hoping his goal in Beijing can be the start of a superb season with West Ham United
04.08.2009

Young striker Zavon Hines found his feet in Beijing and wants that Far East experience to launch his bid for first-team action this season. The 20-year-old Hines scored with virtually the last touch for West Ham United in the 2-0 win over hosts Beijing Guoan in the Barclays Asia Trophy and is hoping he has shown manager Gianfranco Zola exactly what he can do.

"It has been a good tournament to play in," Hines, who scored five goals in six games in pre-season last year before suffering a knee problem, told whufc.com. "The conditions were hard, but you just have to work harder to get through it all and I am sure this will show well for us come the new season.

"Last year, I had a good pre-season and then got the injury, but hopefully I can carry on this year and get through the season with no injuries and be involved as much as I can with the first team. I want to show the manager what I can do."

Hines completed the scoring after defender Danny Gabbidon had grabbed the first in the 80th minute as West Ham secured third place in the tournament.

"I don't remember too much about my goal to be honest," added Hines "It was a through-ball to me and I remember going one-on-one and the ball going through the keeper's legs. I was just happy to score and it was nice for us to end the tournament with a good match and win."

Reflecting on the tournament that started with a 1-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, Hines said: "The first game was not the best for us and we got the injury to Luis [Boa Morte] that we didn't want, but we played better football in the second match and I think the last few days we were more used to the conditions.

"It is good to play football in a completely different atmosphere and I am sure the fitness will show now we are back."

The team also got to visit the Great Wall of China when they had an afternoon of free time. "It was good to go there, something different. Although a bit tough on the legs, as there were so many steep steps. But it was a place that you can say you have visited."

Hines believes the trip to Beijing and, the one to Austria just before it, was also a good chance for the team to spend time together before the 2009/10 campaign kicks off on 15 August. The diminutive forward also revealed how the senior players in the squad had helped the younger members become part of the team.

"The trips have been good for team bonding. Everyone can spend time together as a squad, we got to know anyone new and just spend the time as a team on and off the pitch. It has been good to be around each other.

"The older and more senior boys really looked after us all well, making sure we were happy and OK. We get a bit of banter from them now and then, if you are not doing well in training, they will tell you. But it was really good to be there."

Now with the real business about to start, Hines has only one thing on his mind, scoring more goals and clinching a first-team place. He would love to be involved against SSC Napoli this weekend and then take it from there.

"My aim is at to be on the bench for the first team for the start if I can, but just to do my best in any game I play for West Ham United and go upwards from there."

Switzerland U19 defender Fabio Daprela is raring to get his West Ham United career underway
03.08.2009

Fabio Daprela believes he is in the perfect place to realise his undoubted potential. The Switzerland Under-19 defender joined West Ham United on a five-year deal last week, jetting into London after representing his country at the UEFA European U19 Championship in Ukraine. Daprela, who has moved to London from Grasshopper Zurich in his homeland, wants to follow in the long line of illustrious names to come off the Academy of Football's famed conveyor belt of talent. In a week that will climax with the second annual Bobby Moore Cup fixture, which will see West Ham host SSC Napoli at the Boleyn Ground, the 18-year-old singled out the Hammers and England great as the player he most looked up to.

"I know West Ham United is the Academy of football and they had Bobby Moore, a great captain in 1966," said Daprela, who has also been impressed by the performances of the club's present-day stars.

"I know quite a few players already from the television - Matthew Upson, Jack Collison, Carlton Cole and Herita Ilunga."

Daprela, who will train with his new team-mates for the first time this week, is also excited about the prospect of linking up with the club's band of promising youngsters, including wingers Junior Stanislas and Daniel Kearns, who he marked when the Swiss took on Northern Ireland in Belfast in April.

Now, he wants to carry his promising performances into the Barclays Premier League.

"I wanted to join with the other youngsters in the team. I know Stanislas is a great football and I saw the goal he scored on the television in Switzerland.

"I played against Daniel Kearns, who is a good player, very fast and good dribbling. I want to play with the first team in the Premier League."

Hartson now out of critical care
BBC.co.uk

Former Wales international footballer John Hartson who is fighting cancer has been transferred out of critical care, say his doctors. The retired footballer, 34, has been critically ill at Morriston Hospital in Swansea since undergoing emergency surgery on his brain last month. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer which had reached his brain and lungs. He is now being treated at the city's Singleton Hospital and could begin chemotherapy this week. Hartson played for Arsenal and Celtic during his career and was capped 51 times for Wales, before retiring from the game in February 2008. Since the cancer diagnosis was made in July has undergone two operations on his brain. The first was emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, and the second was a pre-planned neurosurgical drainage procedure. But last week the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABM) NHS trust which is caring for him reported a gradual improvement in the star's condition. He was transferred from Morriston into the care of Singleton's cancer team on Sunday evening, the NHS trust confirmed in a statement. "If progress continues, we are planning to begin his chemotherapy treatment this week," the statement added.
The father-of-three's family, making their own statement, thanked all the staff at Morriston "for their help and support" as well as the ambulance staff who transferred the former footballer. "We are now focusing on helping John in the next stage of his treatment," they said. After an illustrious career on the pitch, Hartson was developing a new career as a television pundit when he became ill. Since the news of his illness has emerged, the hospital has been inundated with messages of support. Among them was one from American cyclist Lance Armstrong, who has himself fought testicular cancer. He has also received backing from UK troops fighting in Afghanistan, and US marines, his family have revealed.

West Ham are said to have had a bid for Stockport goalkeeper Owain Fon-Williams turned down. 22-year-old Fon-Williams, who is widely is regarded as League One County's most prized asset is said to have been the subject of a £150,000 bid from the Hammers - an offer that is said to have been instantly rejected. The talented Welsh under-21 international has been tracked by a number of Premier League clubs in recent months, including Everton and Sunderland. He has been at Edgeley Park for just a year following a free transfer from former club Crewe, whom he left having failed to break into the first team. Fon-Williams, who stands at 6'4" joined The Alex as a trainee in 2003 before a broken leg in 2004 halted his progress. After completing his move to Stockport in July 2008 following the completion of his contract at Gresty Road he was made first choice keeper, but soon lost his place after some indifferent form. Having returned to the number one spot in November the keeper went on to play every game for County before a problematic shoulder forced an operation in March that kept him of of action for the rest of the season. Prior to the setback Fon-Williams had earned his first call-up to the full Welsh squad.

Mensah admits Prem lure
Sunderland and West Ham linked with defender
By Giscard Gourizro Last updated: 3rd August 2009

John Mensah has hinted that his future could lie in the Premier League amid reports linking him with a move away from Lyon. According to rumours in France, the Ghana international is attracting interest from Sunderland and West Ham United. Mensah is flattered by the speculation but remains focused on ensuring he enjoys a successful 2009/10 season. The 26-year-old defender told skysports.com: "It is great to be linked to Premier League clubs. "My past season with Lyon was not good and I hated to be injured. But I am fit now and raring to go, either at Lyon or the Premier League." He added: "I am aware of the interest, but nothing is agreed yet, it was always an ambition to play in the Premier League, so let's wait and see."

Ricardo Fuller Hints At Stoke City Arrival Of Dean Ashton From West Ham United
The Jamaican seems to think he might be teaming up with a new strike partner in the Potteries soon, but would rather focus on pre-season preparations than transfer dealings...
3 Aug 2009 17:29:05

Stoke City striker Ricardo Fuller was out delivering season tickets to lucky fans in the Potteries today, and took some time out from doing so to talk about his club's likely dealings in the transfer window ahead of the new season. West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has been heavily linked with a move to the Britannia Stadium in recent weeks, and Fuller seemed to be optimistic that the striker was indeed on his way to join him.

"For a couple of months now there's been talk of Dean Ashton coming here," Fuller told Sky Sports News. "And a few more players, so hopefully the officials and the gaffer can bring in a few new faces.

"But at the end of the day, I'm just a player and all the other players will say the same. We just want to concentrate on our own job that we have to do, which is getting fit and continuing our preparation for the beginning of the season and let the gaffer do his job and bring in new people."

Ashton's time at West Ham has been severely disrupted by injury. However, his style of play would fit in well with the no-frills approach to the game favoured by Potters manager Tony Pulis, who last week claimed that the England international's injury problems would not put him off making an offer.

West Ham United Goalscorer Gabbidon Feeling Confident Ahead Of New Season
The Welshman found the net whilst the club were in China, and now hopes to take some of that momentum into the new season...
3 Aug 2009 17:14:39

West Ham United defender Danny Gabbidon managed a rare goal whilst the club were in China last week as part of their preparations for the new season, scoring in the side's 2-0 victory over Beijing Guoan in the Asia Trophy. The defender managed to complete his first 90 minutes since December 2008, after suffering a complex series of injuries relating to an abdominal problem, and was delighted to have contributed to a victory by helping to keep a clean sheet as well as scoring a goal. He was clearly excited about his goal when speaking to the club's official website though, stating, "I didn't really see it coming. Nobes [Mark Noble] had whipped in a corner just before and I kind of ran in a bit too early so I thought the second one that comes in I am just going to hang back a bit. "It worked out perfectly. I lost my defender and it was great to see it going in. I was a bit shocked because I am not usually a goalscorer. It was probably the first time I have been up for a corner since I have been at West Ham. It was nice to score though. It was good for my confidence, especially as I also played a full 90 minutes. "It has made me feel better about myself but the main thing is the team. It was nice to get a win and finish the trip to China on a winning note. I wasn't expecting to score, as I was more concerned about contributing to the team by helping us keep a clean sheet."
Gabbidon was also pleased to be back home after a hectic pre-season for the Hammers that involved a trip to Austria as well as China over the last month or so, but he feels that the side are in good shape ahead of the coming campaign. "It is good to be back at home this week. It was hectic in Austria and China and there wasn't a lot of time to do anything but train and play but you won't hear us complaining," he explained. "It is nice for us to get back to see our families though and start thinking about the new season."

Mensah Tracked By Sunderland & West Ham United
GhanaWeb.com

According to a report in Le Parisien, Olympique Lyonnais defender John Mensah is being courted by Premier League clubs Sunderland and West Ham United. The Ghanaian international star only joined OL from Stade Rennais last summer, however, the step to one of France's elite teams has been difficult for Mensah, who has struggled to gain regular playing time at the Stade Gerland over the course of his Lyon stay. Although he played 12 league games last season, these were not all in his favoured central defensive berth, where he struggled to displace Cris and Jean-Alain Boumsong. The 26-year-old's season was also hindered by injury, as his whole career has been to date.
"My last season at Lyon was not good because of injuries, but I am ready and in shape now, whether I am to play in Lyon or in Premier League," he told Ghanaian television, according to France Football. Lyon announced last week that Mensah could well be one of a number of squad players shed before the start of the Ligue 1 season on Saturday, with reports associating the Black Cats and the Hammers with the powerful defender. Sunderland are known to be in the market for a central defender and would appear to have the funding to match OL's reported €7 million asking price. France Football, however, notes that no move is likely for two weeks. There can be little doubting the quality of the Obuasi-born star, who has previously featured in Italy for the likes of Genoa and Modena, however, his ability to stay healthy must be a significant worry for any side interested in his services.

West Ham in talks to keep Neill
Monday, August 3, 2009
ViewLondon.co.uk

West Ham are to continue talks this week with Lucas Neill in an attempt to keep him at Upton Park. With the Hammers now back from their trip to the Far East, manager Gianfranco Zola will step up moves to finalise his squad ahead of the new campaign. Zola's former Chelsea team-mate Eidur Gudjohnsen has been linked with a switch to Upton Park, but the Hammers are also keen to obtain Neill's signature again. The Australia international's contract expired at the end of last month and he did not fly to Beijing for the Barclays Asia Trophy as the 31-year-old considers his options, with Manchester City and Galatasaray reported possible other destinations. West Ham also have Julien Faubert available following from a loan spell at Real Madrid, and the Frenchman has impressed when slotting into right-back. Ghana international John Mensah has been attracting some interest from England, with the Hammers and Sunderland both said to be keen on the Lyon defender. Zola's current players have enjoyed a productive pre-season, which included a training camp in Austria and will see them face Serie A side Napoli at Upton Park on Saturday. Defender Danny Gabbidon is another back in the frame for the new campaign following a long injury lay-off. The defender scored in the 2-0 win over Beijing Guoan. Gabbidon said: 'It was hectic in Austria and China and there wasn't a lot of time to do anything but train and play - but you won't hear us complaining. 'It is nice for us to get back to see our families though and start thinking about the new season.'

West Ham ready for Bobby Moore Cup match
By Simon Hayes on August 3, 2009 3:43 PM
Wharf.co.uk

The football season is almost upon us but before it starts in earnest West Ham will honour arguably their greatest son in their final friendly game. The Bobby Moore Cup match will be held at Upton Park when the Irons meet Italian side Napoli on August 8. The Wharf spoke to Moore's widow Stephanie about the game, which will raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund. She said: "I'm looking forward to the game very much. It was a great occasion last year, the fans really got behind it and showed what the club is all about. "West Ham supporters are loyal to their heroes and remain loyal to them forever. They are a special band of supporters, a real community. This year it will be a tremendous game and what a great way to kick-start the season."
Last year's game against Villareal saw the retirement of the Hammers' number six shirt, which Moore wore with such distinction in 646 games for the club. Stephanie was presented with the shirt at half-time in that game by Matthew Upson, the last player to wear it, and she admitted she found it an emotional occasion. She said: "I knew it was going to be difficult so I didn't speak in public when I went onto the pitch to receive the shirt. It was an amazing day and words just can't do justice to what it meant."

The shirt was framed and was later sold at a charity quiz night for £3,000. The Bobby Moore Cup match itself raised £39,950 for cancer research. Stephanie admitted Moore would not have expected such a tribute. She said: "I think Bobby would have been surprised the number six shirt was retired because he did have his problems with the club after he left. The old board weren't very supportive of him and he rarely went back before he died. "But in recent years the club have been wonderful and the efforts they have made for the fund have been fantastic. "He was there man and boy and the club always meant a lot to him. He never had any regrets about his career there, even though people sometimes thought he should have moved to a bigger club to win more trophies. "But that West Ham side he played in was quite star-studded and achieved some tremendous things like winning the Cup Winners Cup. "And Bobby was great friends with so many players there, people like Harry Redknapp, so he was quite happy."

Last Thursday, July 30, marked 43 years to the day since Moore lifted the World Cup for England. He tragically died of bowel cancer in February 1993, at the age of just 51, and Stephanie wants to raise awareness of the disease to prevent its spread. She said: "The most important thing is to raise awareness of bowel cancer. It is curable if it's diagnosed early, but 44 people die from it every day. "It's also important to raise money for research. Over the last 15 years the treatment available has improved massively but the disease is still growing. People need to eat less red meat, cut down on their drinking and smoking and get more exercise. If we continue as we are it will become an epidemic. "My message is to go for a screening and if you have any concerns go to a doctor without delay."

The Bobby Moore Cup game against Napoli is on Saturday, August 8. For tickets visit whufc.co.uk.

Goal lifts Gabbidon
WHUFC.com
A rare turn as goalscorer has helped boost Danny Gabbidon's confidence
before the new season
03.08.2009

Danny Gabbidon is pleased to be back on home soil after an extremely
successful pre-season so far with West Ham United. The defender's excellent
summer continued with his first 90 minutes since December 2008 in the 2-0
win against Beijing Guoan in the Barclays Asia Trophy last Friday. To cap it
off, he scored the team's opening goal.

It came courtesy of a towering header after he ventured up for a corner in
the 80th minute. As Mark Noble's cross spiralled into the penalty area,
Gabbidon was the quickest to react. The celebrations were fitting for a man
who had been out for a year and a half.

"I didn't really see it coming," Gabbidon told whufc.com. "Nobes had whipped
in a corner just before and I kind of ran in a bit too early so I thought
the second one that comes in I am just going to hang back a bit. It worked
out perfectly. I lost my defender and it was great to see it going in.

"I was a bit shocked because I am not usually a goalscorer. It was probably
the first time I have been up for a corner since I have been at West Ham. It

also played a full 90 minutes.

"It has made me feel better about myself but the main thing is the team. It
was nice to get a win and finish the trip to China on a winning note. I
wasn't expecting to score, as I was more concerned about contributing to the
team by helping us keep a clean sheet."

The No4 only returned to full training at the end of last season after a
succession of injuries related to an abdominal problem and then played in a
friendly game to open the new Cardiff City stadium at the start of July.
That was followed by a first run-out for the Hammers in 18 months at Grays
Athletic before the trips to Austria and then China.

"It is good to be back at home this week," he added, with the whole squad
now focused on the visit of SSC Napoli this Saturday. "It was hectic in
Austria and China and there wasn't a lot of time to do anything but train
and play but you won't hear us complaining. It is nice for us to get back to
see our families though and start thinking about the new season."

Scholars always learning
WHUFC.com
Paul Hilton believes his Academy youngsters will have benefitted from
training with the first team
02.08.2009

A number of West Ham United's aspiring youngsters have benefitted greatly
from training with Gianfranco Zola's first-team squad in recent weeks.
Assistant Academy Director Paul Hilton believes the likes of England
Under-17 striker Robert Hall, Republic of Ireland youth international Eoin
Wearen and second-year scholar Conor Okus would have learned a great deal
from working alongside the club's established internationals.

The trio, along with fellow scholars Georg Grasser and Cristian Montano,
were also involved in the first-team pre-season friendly victory at Grays
Athletic on 12 July, giving them the opportunity to see close-up how the
likes of Herita Ilunga, Kieron Dyer and Daniel Gabbidon prepare for a match.

Hall, Wearen and Okus trained under the watchful eye of Zola and his coaches
for a week before the first-team squad travelled to Austria for a ten-day
training camp. Midfielders Grasser and Ollie Lee and forward Anthony Edgar
were all invited to join Zola and his players as they worked on improving
their fitness ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season.

Hilton now expects his charges to pass on their experiences to the younger
members of the Academy. "A few of the lads have been training with the
first-team in pre-season and it has given them a little insight into where
they need to be and how much work they need to do to reach that level," said
Hilton. "The first-team staff were brilliant with them, allowing them to
train with the squad and showing them the levels they need to attain if they
are to become members of that squad themselves. "Hopefully the lads will
have taken that all on board and will pass on what they have learned to the
younger boys at the Academy. They have been setting the tone in training
since their return and that is encouraging."

Hammers favourites to sign Neill
Monday meeting to discuss new deal
Last updated: 2nd August 2009

Sky Sports News understands a deal to keep Lucas Neill at West Ham could be
reached on Monday. Neill is a free agent, but Sky Sports News chief news
reporter Bryan Swanson understands a meeting has been scheduled on Monday
between the club and the Australian's advisors to finalise a new deal.
Sources have told Swanson that West Ham remain favourites to sign Neill
after interest from several clubs over the summer. The defender's contract
at the club expired last month and he has previously rejected an offer of an
extension. However, Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola revealed his hope earlier
in the week that a deal could be agreed to hang on to the influential
31-year-old. "Lucas Neill is talking with the club," said Zola on Tuesday.
"We need obviously to have some negotiations, but I am hoping that he is
going to join us as soon as possible. "I know his name has been linked to
other clubs. Last time I spoke to the player he told me that if anything
could happen he would call me first. So far he has not called me so I assume
he is not yet going anywhere. "He was an important player last year and our
aim this year is to work to improve how we did last season and we hope that
he will make his decision."
Turkish giants Galatasaray, along with Manchester City, had been linked with
bids, but it appears Neill is now set to stay at Upton Park.

SOCCEROOS captain Lucas Neill looks like staying with West Ham United and
could finalise a new deal in the next 24 hours. The 31-year-old defender
looked certain to leave the club after his contract expired at the end of
last season and he rejected a contract extension which required him to take
a pay cut. But reports in England now suggest Neill's representative will
meet with West Ham officials at Upton Park on Monday to iron out a new deal.
Neill was linked with a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray, where he would
have joined fellow Socceroo Harry Kewell, as well as cashed-up Manchester
City, but the Hammers always remained hopeful of retaining their club
captain. "Lucas Neill is talking with the club," manager Gianfranco Zola
said. "We need obviously to have some negotiations, but I am hoping that he
is going to join us as soon as possible. "He was an important player last
year and our aim this year is to work to improve how we did last season and
we hope that he will make his decision."
Speculation of Neill's future has stretched over almost the entire English
Premier League break, with the new season starting in two weeks. But Paddy
Dominguez, of Neill's management company Inspire Sports, said the Australian
was not going to be rushed into making a decision on his future. "He will
take as much time as he needs to make the right decision for himself and his
family and announce his decision when he is ready," Dominquez said. If Neill
does remain with the Hammers, Zola must decide whether to give him back the
captaincy or leave it with defender Matthew Upson, who took the reins in the
side's pre-season campaign.

Five star Carr
WHUFC.com
Tony Carr was all smiles after watching his West Ham United U18s thrash
Colchester United
01.08.2009

Tony Carr admitted to being hugely impressed after watching his West Ham
United Under-18 side overcome Colchester United 5-0 on Saturday. The Academy
Director was in fine humour after seeing Nick Barrett, Daniel Subuola,
Daniel Purdy, Jack Werndly and Simone Bezziccheri hit the target at Little
Heath. With the first-team squad preparing to fly home from Barclays Asia
Trophy duty in China and a number of second-year scholars turning out for
the reserves at Kingstonian on Friday evening, Carr named a largely U17 side
to take on the U's. The youngsters responded superbly, going into half-time
2-0 up before adding three further strikes after the interval. Despite the
use of rolling substitutes, Carr said his players had produced a fluent,
confident display. Carr, who has recently returned from leading a coaching
course at the West Ham United USA Academy at the Hammers' partner club,
Alpharetta United, in Atlanta, Georgia, was pleased with his squad. "It was
a good performance," he said. "I was very pleased with it. We passed the
ball very well, especially considering three or four of them had had a 15 or
20 minute run out at Kingstonian the night before. "We played very well.
Obviously you can only play as well as the opposition allow you to and we
dominated the game from start to finish. I was very happy with the result
and we could even have added a couple more goals at the end."
Carr was also happy with his trip to the United States, where he spent three
days working with young players. "I went away to the USA Academy, where we
held a three-day training camp at Alpharetta in Atlanta," he explained.
"Even though the conditions were extremely hot and humid, we got some good
work done with some promising young footballers."
Back home, the U18s will return to action at Reading on Wednesday before
hosting Ipswich Town in their final domestic pre-season friendly at Little
Heath on Saturday 8 August. The scholars will then travel to the Netherlands
for an international tournament before returning to England for their
opening FA Premier Academy League fixture at Everton on Saturday 22 August.

Forward thinking for Edgar
WHUFC.com
WHUTV caught up with Anthony Edgar after a West Ham United XI side beat
Kingstonian 3-0
01.08.2009

Anthony Edgar was one of a number of youngsters that shone as a West Ham
United XI side hit three goals for the second consecutive game in the 3-0
win at Kingstonian on Friday.

Edgar formed part of a three-pronged attacked alongside Frank Nouble and
Cristian Montano that caused the home side endless problems. Defender
Matthew Fry opened the scoring midway through the first half when he turned
in an Edgar free-kick from six yards out. Nouble added a second seven
minutes later with a fine solo effort before grabbing his second after a
defensive mix-up three minutes after the break.

"I think we played well and the whole team stuck together," Edgar told
WHUTV. "We kept the ball, but it was hard as they were in for the battle and
were kicking us. But I think we did well and it was very competitive.

"It was hard but everyone had good technical ability out there and we moved
the ball well with one and two touch passing and created some good
opportunities."

After the match former West Ham defender Ian Pearce, who was lining up in
attack for Kingstonian, was full of praise for West Ham's forward line and
Edgar explained that he believes the arrival of Nouble can only help his own
game.

"It's great that Frank has come to the club. I like the style of football
that he plays. He knows where my runs are and I know where his runs are and
hopefully we can carry it on," he said.

The 18-year-old revealed that reserve-team manger Alex Dyer ensured that his
young side were only concentrating on their own performances during his
pre-match team talk.

"Alex Dyer said to us before the game that these players want to do well and
want to impress because they are playing West Ham. He told us all you need
to do is keep your head and keep the ball and we'll get the goals. I think
we did that well."

West Ham sign left-back Daprela

West Ham have signed Swiss left-back Fabio Daprela from Grasshopper Club
Zurich for an undisclosed fee. Daprela, 18, agreed a five-year deal with the
Hammers after flying in to sign from the Uefa European Under-19 Championship
in Ukraine. "I am very happy to come here as it is a great club with a
great manager," he told West Ham's website. "I want to play in the first
team in the Premier League. I'm looking forward to the season starting."

Upson fee too pricey

Villa's transfer-window frustration continued today after they were priced
out of a move for West Ham defender Matthew Upson, writes Brendan
McLoughlin. It is understood Villa, who face Juventus in tomorrow's Peace
Cup final after beating Porto 2-1 last night, were interested in offering
the former Blues defender a route back to the Second City as his search for
a new centre-back continues. But boss Martin O'Neill has been put off by the
Hammers' £15m price for the England international.

Jimenez a coup for cautious Zola
TeamTalk

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola insists the Hammers have pulled off a coup
by signing Luis Jimenez on a season-long loan. The biggest change at Upton
Park was the club being taken over by asset management company CB Holding,
with chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and vice-chairman Asgeir Fridgeirsson
resigning from the board.
Fans have been assured there will be investment in players, although boss
Zola indicated at the end of last season there would not be radical changes
to his squad as he looks to build on a ninth-placed finish in the Premier
League. The Jimenez deal appears to suit the Hammers perfectly. He has
joined for a year from Italian giants Inter Milan with a view to a permanent
move. "Gianluca Nani (West Ham technical director) tried to sign me about
six years ago for Brescia, when I first came through," said Jimenez. "I also
played with Valon Behrami. He was my team-mate at Lazio. Valon is a great
person and as a player I knew he had all the qualities to do well wherever
he went. "I am looking forward to playing with him once again and helping
West Ham do well."
The 25-year-old Chile international, known as "Jimi" to his new team-mates,
came to London following advice from Inter boss Jose Mourinho, while Luis
Figo and Patrick Vieira also spoke positively about the switch. "I spoke to
Patrick about the Premier League and heard how much he loves it," continued
Jimenez. "He told me the fans in England are great and that if I ever had
the chance to come here I should take it. Now I have that chance with West
Ham."
In order to prove himself in Europe, Jimenez has not played for his country
since March 2008 but he has kept a close eye on the team's fortunes as they
stride towards the 2010 World Cup with arguably their best crop of players
in years. "The national team are playing very well," said Jimenez. "They
have an Argentinian coach, Marcelo Bielsa. Right now I think they're the
team that are playing the best football in South American qualifying. "When
I signed for Inter, I wanted to do well there and I spoke to Bielsa and we
agreed the best thing was I stayed there. I've been out of the national team
but he took it well. "It (making an international return) depends on how I
get on with my team but I can imagine with West Ham everything will work out
fine. I am looking forward to the challenge."
Resting during international breaks could benefit Zola, who has been looking
to add to his attacking threat. "We know he is a quality player and he was
brought into this squad to improve the quality," said assistant boss Steve
Clarke. "It's early days but he's working well and he seems to have fitted
into the group well, which is good. He needs to improve his English a bit
but I'm sure over a period of time that will happen."
With Carlton Cole looking to build on the best campaign of his career,
Jimenez is likely to support the England striker. Former boss Alan
Curbishley said: "They tried to sign him when I was there. He likes to join
in with the forwards. Maybe they want to get a bit more out of their
attacking play. That is what let them down a little bit last season."

Swiss starlet makes Hammers move
TeamTalk

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has brought in highly-rated Switzerland
Under-19 defender Fabio Daprela on a five-year contract. The 18-year-old has
signed up with the Hammers until 2014 after they agreed an undisclosed fee
with Grasshopper Club Zurich for his services. "I am very happy to come
here as it is a great club," he told West Ham's official website. "I saw the
team play on television last season and it is a very good team. "I think I
can learn a lot from the manager and people like Matthew Upson and Mark
Noble."

GIANFRANCO ZOLA UP AGAINST IT
West Ham face huge struggle to stay in Premier League
News Of The World
By ROB SHEPHERD, 01/08/2009

THAT West Ham start the new season in the Premier League is itself an
achievement. Finishing a comfortable ninth in May disguised the fact the
Hammers survived a season which threatened their very existence, let alone
top-tier status. The instability of manager Alan Curbishley's early
departure was followed by the uncertainty of successor Gianfranco Zola's
early days, compounded by the collapse of former owner Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson's business empire. It is to chief executve Scott Duxbury's
credit that he managed to keep a steady ship and that Zola, with the able
help of his assistant Steve Clarke, did not panic at the start of his
managerial career. Financial restraints mean it will be tough for Zola to
build on the foundations which he started to lay in the second half of last
season, when he began to blood another wave of bright young talent from West
Ham's revered youth academy. Much to the approval of fans, players such as
James Tomkins, Jack Collison and Junior Stanislas emerged. The danger is
that Zola and the club hierarchy start feeling a bit too pleased with
themselves far too soon. If anyone at the club thinks they have a shot at
the top eight they are deluded. At a time of financial uncertainly the main
aim for the Hammers is do just a bit better than merely survive by
developing a side that at least fulfils the supporters' craving for a fluid
style of football. To that end, Zola intends on employing a 4-3-3 system. It
didn't work when he first took over because they didn't have the players,
and eventually he had to revert to a more conventional 4-4-2. Now they are
going for a more expansive gameplan again, believing Luis Jimenez, on loan
from Inter Milan, can forge a formidable trio with Carlton Cole and Kieron
Dyer.
If Cole can stay fit, what became a toothless frontline when he was injured
for two months last season, could gel together well. And it would seem the
wily Clarke will have a back four, underpinned by England keeper Robert
Green, well drilled. However, the key players for the Hammers, especially in
a 4-3-3, will be the main men in midfield.Scott Parker and Valon Behrami
were badly missed when they missed the final quarter of last season. The
pair, in partnership with England contender Mark Noble, looks like a good
combination.
However, there is a lack of depth to the squad. With Dean Ashton not even
considered for the tour to China, if Cole gets injured again, Zola can
hardly rely on 17-year-old Frank Nouble, a signing from Chelsea, to lead the
line on a regular basis. And if new owners are not found by the turn of the
year, the club could be in trouble if they have no money to refresh the
squad in January. Then again, given the doom and gloom that surrounded the
club last January, at least the Hammers go into the new season in brighter
mood and a lot better shape - despite an awful new kit which has lost the
famed blue sleeves of their claret shirts, a strange choice for a club which
is trying to go back to its roots.

BIG HOPE: That the club resolve the ownership issue and find a new buyer so
they can concentrate on the pitch rather than off it.

KEY IN: Herita Ilunga (Toulouse £2.75m)

KEY OUT: Lee Bowyer (Birmingham free)

Daprela signs

West Ham United have signed Switzerland U19 defender Fabio Daprela from
Grasshopper Club Zurich
31.07.2009

West Ham United are pleased to announce the signing of Switzerland Under-19
defender Fabio Daprela from Grasshopper Club Zurich for an undisclosed fee.
Daprela, a left-back, flew straight to London to complete his move to the
Boleyn Ground from the UEFA European U19 Championship finals in Ukraine. The
club had to contend with interest from a host of top Italian sides for the
youngster, who has signed a five-year deal after moving from the Zurich
club.

The 18-year-old helped the Swiss to get to within five minutes of a place in
the semi-finals in Ukraine. Daprela played the full 90 minutes in the 1-1
draw with England, 77 minutes of the 2-1 victory over Slovenia, and the full
game as Switzerland suffered an agonising 1-0 defeat by the host nation in
their final Group A fixture. He has been a regular for his nation in
previous years, and also started all three of Switzerland's matches at the
2008 UEFA European U17 Championship finals in Turkey. The teenager marked
new West Ham team-mate Daniel Kearns when Switzerland's U19s beat Northern
Ireland 1-0 in a Nationwide International Challenge match in Belfast in
April this year.

At club level, Daprela joined Grasshoppers in 2003, having started his
career at youth club SC YF Juventus. He made eleven appearances for the
club's first-team. Daprela becomes the second Swiss player to join the
Hammers in the past 12 months, joining full international Valon Behrami at
the Boleyn Ground.

Daprela is now looking forward to meeting Gianfranco Zola and his new
team-mates as they prepare for the start of the new Barclays Premier League
season. "I am very happy to come here as it is a great club," Daprela said.
"I saw the team play on television last season and it is a very good team.
They have a great manager and it is good to be here. "I want to play for the
first team in the Premier League. I think I can learn a lot from the manger
and people like Matthew Upson and Mark Noble and I am really looking forward
to the season starting."

Dyer leads Sir Bobby tributes
WHUFC.com
Kieron Dyer and Gianfranco Zola have paid their respects to the late Sir
Bobby Robson
31.07.2009

Kieron Dyer has spoken of the "massive influence" of Sir Bobby Robson on his
life as he led the West Ham United tributes for a true legend of the game.

The England midfielder was told of Sir Bobby's death at the age of 76 just
before the 2-0 defeat of Beijing Guoan in the Barclays Asia Trophy in China
on Friday. Fittingly, Dyer was named man of the match.

A minute of silence was held for the former Newcastle United, Ipswich Town
and England manager before the match, while the players and coaching staff
wore black armbands to show their respect.

Dyer said: "He was a massive influence on my career - not just on the pitch
but off the pitch. I got told five minutes before kick-off so it was quite a
shock to the system. He had beaten cancer so many times. He was such a
fighter, you thought he would go on until well into his hundreds. It wasn't
to be.

"The minute's silence did overwhelm me and now I am just going to look at
all the great memories he bought to my life and all the special bits like in
team talks when he used to call me Kevin - he used to forget names a lot.
Hopefully back home in England when there are games being played instead of
a minute's silence there will be a minute's standing ovation with clapping
to celebrate his life because what he has brought to the game of football is
phenomenal.

"There are so many great memories and football is his life. You just have to
go and look where Newcastle United are. He got sacked for taking us fifth in
the Premier League and now they are in the Championship. He just loved
football and he is going to be missed. My prayers are with his wife Elsie
and his family.

"I played my best football under him. Off the pitch, he treated me like a
son. We obviously had the Ipswich connection together so as soon as he was
Newcastle manager he made a bee-line for me and took it upon himself to make
sure I moved out of the notorious Quayside straight away to somewhere quiet.
He was everything to me. A father figure to me and I am really going to miss
him."

Zola said the game had lost one of its leading lights: "I have wonderful
memories of Sir Bobby. He was a man I respected very much. What I liked
about him was that he was always positive, always smiling. He has been a
great ambassador for football in general. I pay my respects to him. He is a
big loss for us."

Former West Ham striker Tony Cottee played under Sir Bobby with England.
"This is upsetting news. Sir Bobby gave me my seven England caps but above
all else he was a lovely man. I met him at a dinner towards the end of last
year and he was in really good form. He was as friendly as ever. It is sad
news for his family and also sad for the game of football. He will be much
missed.

"Sir Bobby Robson was a worthy title for the man. I have nothing but respect
for him. I had many good club managers but I was proud to say I played under
him. Sir Alf Ramsey won the World Cup with England but Sir Bobby was right
up there with him. He was penalty kicks away from the final in 1990. He was
a wonderful manager, a great coach, but above everything else, he was a
fantastic person."

West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury added: "On behalf of everyone at the club,
many of whom like myself have fond personal memories of Sir Bobby, I would
like to send my sincere condolences to his family and friends. He gave so
much to the game and his personality and professionalism should be an
inspiration to us all."

Hammers finish on a high

Goals from Danny Gabbidon and Zavon Hines see off Beijing Guoan at the
Barclays Asia Trophy
31.07.2009

Beijing Guoan 0-2 West Ham United

Danny Gabbidon and Zavon Hines struck to ensure West Ham United secured
third place at the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 2-0 win over Beijing Guoan.

Gabbidon rose highest to meet Mark Noble's corner ten minutes from time
before substitute Hines added a second at the death to give a much-improved
West Ham a deserved victory at the Workers Stadium.

Gianfranco Zola made five changes to the team that narrowly lost 1-0 to
Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals on Wednesday. Jonathan Spector, James
Tomkins, Noble and Scott Parker, who was handed the captain's armband, all
made their first starts of the pre-season, while Gabbidon came back into the
starting XI. Matthew Upson, James Collins, Julien Faubert, injury-victim
Luis Boa Morte and Junior Stanislas made way.

Beijing, who sit top of the Chinese Super League, had already sent a squad
of 13 players away for their Sunday Chinese Super League game in Chonqing,
and named an entirely new side for the match from the one beaten by Hull
City in the semi-finals.

Before the action got underway at the Workers Stadium a minute's silence was
held in memory of Sir Bobby Robson, who passed away on Friday morning after
a long battle with cancer. Both teams wore black armbands as a mark of
respect for the former England manager and no doubt the silence would have
been particularly poignant for Dyer, who played under Robson for five years
at Newcastle United.

After a couple of long-range efforts from Beijing in the opening five
minutes, the visitors began to stamp their authority on the game. A neat
passing move involving Herita Ilunga, Parker and Dyer saw the latter try to
flick a ball on for Ilunga to chase. The covering defender could only bring
the DR Congo left-back down and Luis Jimenez came close to registering his
first goal for his new club with a powerful, curling free-kick that Zhang
Sipeng held at the second attempt.

Once West Ham had found their feet, Beijing rarely troubled Robert Green in
the West Ham goal and only had two real chances in the opening half. The
first, a half-chance that Paulo Vogt blasted over, fell on 20 minutes, while
the second was a low drive from Wang Ke that Green got down quickly to
gather.

After several marginal offside decisions went against them, West Ham thought
they had taken the lead four minutes before half time when Dyer slotted the
ball inside the far post from Collison's pass. However, once more the
referee's assistant's flag was raised to deny the visitors.

Beijing made two changes at the break with Victor coming on up front and Li
Tixiang entering the fray in midfield.

In the warm and sticky conditions the Hammers toiled after the break but
once again forced themselves onto their opponents and enjoyed much of the
ball in the opening exchanges. With Dyer getting forward in support of Cole,
West Ham carried the far greater threat, although they did have to survive a
minor scare when Wang looped a long-range volley narrowly over the bar seven
minutes after the re-start.

Five minutes later and another promising burst forward by Dyer won West Ham
a corner as they sought to turn the screw on their hosts. Guoan's cause was
not helped by an injury to Park, who was replaced by Lang Zheng, while
captain Sui and Wang went off for Kou and Sun Kaj. Zola made his first
change with Bondz N'Gala coming at left back for Herita Ilunga.

Understandably, the rhythm of the game suffered slightly as a result of the
changes, but West Ham continued to have the better of the possession with
Dyer and Collison on either flank looking particularly threatening.

The Londoners' move of the match came on 69 minutes when Noble's ball
forward was flicked into Dyer's path by Cole. The winger returned the favour
by laying the ball back into the England forward's path, only for the
striker to be denied the opening goal by a last-ditch tackle.

Junior Stanislas was introduced in place of Collison to add yet more pace to
West Ham's attack and the England Under-20 international almost made his
mark from Noble's pass, but his shot is deflected wide. Zola then made two
further changes with Zavon Hines and Josh Payne coming on for Jimenez and
Parker.

Zola's side finally got their reward ten minutes from the end as Gabbidon
muscled himself away from his marker to meet Noble's flighted corner and
direct a header past Sipeng.

Having missed 18 months through injury, the Wales defender's goal was met
with a huge outpouring of celebration from his team-mates. It was a fitting
way to mark the former Hammer of the Year's return to action.

Savio and Jordan Spence were the final changes for West Ham in place of the
superb Dyer and industrious Noble, but it was another substitute, Hines, who
was to have the final say. The Jamaican, who had already seen a snap-shot
saved by the goalkeeper, raced onto a through-ball and finished neatly with
his left foot through Sipeng's legs.

After the frustration of losing to Tottenham Hotspur in Wednesday's
semi-final, West Ham's performance, particularly in the second half, will
have given Zola and the fans who have travelled over from the UK real
optimism ahead of the start of the Barclays Premier League season on 15
August.

off the pitch. Alex Dyer will no doubt be delighted with the way his players
set about their task this evening. Although the game tapered off slightly in
the second half, there were several eye-catching performances throughout the
side. Nouble will get the headlines, but he ably supported by Edgar and
Montano while Fry and Eyjolfsson were superb at the back.

89 min - The fans are waiting by the tunnel with their autograph books out
hoping to get the signatures of a few future stars here. I do not think they
will be waiting too long as Mr. Lymer has already checked his watch once.

88 min - We are into the last few minutes here now and, barring a stunning
comeback, it looks as though Nouble's double will have helped this West Ham
XI to their second consecutive away-day win.

84 min - We lose another ball, but this time I cannot fault the player. Good
defending from Mc Naughton sees him stop a Kingstonian attack in its tracks
but the ball rolls back to Dilloway eight yards out. The left back strikes
the ball cleanly but his shot clears not just the goal but the stand as
well.

80 min - It must be an expensive exercise running a non-league club as we
must have lost at least three footballs out of the ground tonight. The
latest vanished after a wayward cross from Cook flies out of the stadium.

75 min - There has been some lovely keep-ball by West Ham in the last ten
minutes and if the home fans sitting around me are anything to go by, they
have made a good impression on the locals.

72 min - Well the Hammers may need a few more minutes to settle now as they
make three more changes. Street leaves the field to be replaced by trialist
Plazzi, while out on pitch Simone Bezzicheri and Ahmed Abdulla have all come
on with Nouble and Eyjolfsson making way.

70 min - I think, and I am tempting fate, that should be all the substitutes
from the home side now. Hopefully West Ham can settle once more and put
Kingstonian's new goalkeeper under some pressure.

67 min - Four more change for the home side with Gerrard, Lampton, Pearce
and Wilson-Denis heading off and Josh Willis, Christian Jolley, Scott
Simpson and Reggie Savage coming on to replace them.

64 min - Darkness has well and truly fallen on Kingsmeadow now and the
floodlights are lighting up the night sky. I am telling you this as we have
a break while Eyjolfsson is down after a knock to the head.

61 min - Changes for both sides here. Nick Barrettt, Daniel Kearns and
Andrea Zola have come on with Brookes, Lee and Grasser making way. The home
side introduce Josh Willis and Luke Pigden for Liam Collins and Lewis Coke.

60 min - So close! After some fancy footwork from Edgar on the edge of the
area, the ball is rolled to Quashie, who takes one touch and drills it
against the upright from 25 yards. So close for the West Ham captain.

58 min - We have 810 fans inside Kingsmeadow tonight and they have been
making plenty of noise. The visitors seem very well represented with plenty
of 'Come on you Irons' heard throughout the game so far. Nouble also seems
to have quickly become a crowd favourite.

56 min - Two changes for the home side as Jamie Beer and Ryan Lake leave the
field for Tom Dilloway and Scott Sheridan.

50 min - It seems to be that as soon as West Ham score a goal, Kingstonian
come very close to getting one back. This time a rasping shot from Tommy
Williams, who I am told used to date Eastenders actress Michelle Ryan, flies
inches over the crossbar,

48 min - GOAL! Well if his first was all down to skill, I think even Nouble
would admit that his second had more than a slice of luck to it. The West
Ham No9 seized on a calamitous mix-up between Gerrard and Duku to roll the
ball into an empty net. A gift for the Hammers.

48 min - A rare forray forward by Tony Brookes sees him play a delightful
cross that is just inches away from being turned in by Montano.

47 min - It does not look like we have had any changes at the break so far.
I must say I cannot blame Alex Dyer, whose side were superb in the first
half.

46 min - Nouble and Edgar get the second period underway.

All of West Ham United's substitutes are warming up during the interval. One
addition to the bench is James Plazzi, who was not listed among the original
replacements. Will Dyer be calling him or any of the others into action when
the game re-starts?

45 min - Mr Lymer blows up dead on 45 minutes and the teams leave the field
for the break. A great first half from Dyer's side the reserve-team manager
should not have too much to say to his men in the dressing room.

44 min - Another corner for the home side which once more looks for Pearce
but Fry gets up to clear the ball. It has to be said that West Ham's two
young central defenders have dealt with the 35-year-old's physical presence
admirably this evening considering the height and size they give away to
him.

40 min - A clever through ball from Lee presents Edgar with a sight of goal.
He takes slightly too long to get his shot away and the angle is narrowed by
Gerrard enough to enable him to smother the No10's shot.

36 min - A bit of handbags there between Fry and Pearce as they tussle for a
corner. The home side win another flag-kick shortly after and only a superb
diving save stops Pearce's header creeping into the far corner.

33 min - The K's are not giving in here though, despite West Ham looking
like they could score with every attack. A deep ball in from the left is
headed behind by Fry and from the resulting corner Lampton places his header
straight into the turf and it bounces over Street's crossbar.

29 min - GOAL! And what a goal it is too. The Kingstonian defence are
struggling to live with Nouble at the moment and he simply powered his way
past Duku into the penalty area before smashing the ball low past Gerrard.
Brilliant play from the new signing.

28 min - Screams for a penalty from the home support as NJ Lampton jumps
over Fry's late tackle. In all fairness it would have been a soft spot kick
to give and referee Colin Lymer correctly waves away their appeals.

27 min - Kingstonian have not let the goal affect their play though and
Street has to be alert once more to dive at the feet of Carl Wilson-Denis
just as the forward seemed poised to score.

24 min - Edgar is just a few feet away from doubling the lead as he darts
past two defenders before unleashing a venomous right-footed drive that has
Gerrard scrambling across his goal. Luckily for him, it flies just wide.

22 min - GOAL! Matt Fry gives West Ham the lead from six yards out. Edgar
had been fouled on the left and he picked himself up to whip in a delicious
free-kick which Fry simply had to steer past Gerrard from close range. It is
nothing less than the Hammers deserve from their start here.

20 min - Good goalkeeping from Adam Street as he gives Eyjolfsson a big
shout to leave the ball as Pearce lurks once more. The young Canadian comes
out to comfortably take the ball and the danger is averted.

17 min - Just a bit of housekeeping for you. Tony Brookes is playing
right-back with Fry and Holmar Eyjolfsson in the middle and Brown on the
left. Quashie, Olly Lee and Grasser are all playing in a central midfield
role with Edgar and Montano just in front of them. Nouble has been tasked
with leading the line and, thus far, he has done a superb job.

15 min - More good work from Nouble to force a corner on the right-hand
side. Georg Grasser, who was with the first team last week in Austria,
floats it in but Matt Fry can only direct his header into the stand behind
Gerrard's goal. Dyer's side are certainly on top here.

12 min - And just as I type that Nouble so nearly gives the visitors the
lead as he powers a left footed shot at goal from just inside the area,
which Luke Gerrard does well to parry. Seconds later, the Kingstonian
captain is called into action again as Montano tests him an almost identical
position.

11 min - Good work from Nouble on the left-hand touchline as he uses his
power and pace to get away from Franci Duku. The Kingstonian No5 could be in
for a busy night if Nouble's performance last week is anything to go by.

8 min - Kingstonian seem to be looking to use the height of Pearce whenever
possible and the forward - it does feel slightly weird typing that - rises
high above left back Jordan Brown to get another header at goal.

5 min - West Ham look to have come out in a 4-3-3 formation with Frank
Nouble leading the line and Anthony Edgar and Cristian Montano, who had
received high praise from Dyer after the 3-2 win at Thurrock a week ago,
providing the width from midfield.

4 min - Pearce was often used as a makeshift striker for West Ham and it
looks like that is now his favoured position as he is sporting the No9 shirt
for the hosts.

2 min - The home side go on the attack straight away and it is a familiar
face that poses the first threat to the Hammers' goal. Ian Pearce, in his
second game for his new team, rises high to meet a right-wing cross but can
only head high and wide.

1 min - Kingstonian get us underway.

7.45pm - Nigel Quashie leads the two teams out to rapturous applause but
that quickly turns to sudden silence on the sound of the referee's whistle
as the whole stadium observes a minute's tribute to Sir Bobby Robson, who
passed away earlier today.

Good evening and welcome to Kingsmeadow for tonight's pre-season match
between a West Ham United XI and Kingstonian.

Alex Dyer's West Ham United XI continue their build-up to the Barclays
Premier Reserve League South season with a trip to Ryman League Premier
Division side Kingstonian.

With the first-team squad away in China at the Barclays Asia Trophy, Dyer
has a young side at his disposal. However, captain Nigel Quashie will add
experience to the lineup.

Canada Under-20 goalkeeper Adam Street, Iceland U21 defender Holmar Orn
Eyjolfsson and new signing Frank Nouble will be eager to impress, while
Georg Grasser, Olly Lee, Anthony Edgar and Cristian Montano have all been in
good form in pre-season.

Kingstonian could present a stiff test for Dyer's team, having won the Ryman
League Division One South title in 2008/09.

West Ham United XI: Street, Brookes, Eyjolfsson, Fry, Brown, Grasser, Lee,
Quashie, Edgar, Nouble, Montano
Subs: Loveday, McNaughton, Zola, Barrett, Bezzicherri, James Plazzi, Kearns,
Abdulla

Kingstonian: Gerrard, Beer, Lake, Williams, Duku, Hustwick, Lampton,
Collins, Pearce, Wilson-Denis, Cook
Subs: Willis, Pigden, Coke, Dilloway, Sheridan, Simpson, Jolley

Creating Chances in China

West Ham United have been flying the flag for the Premier League's
communitiy initiatives
31.07.2009

West Ham United have played a major part in a Premier League initiative to
support grassroots football in Beijing that culminated in a Community
Festival.

The club's Community Sports Trust CEO Mick King and Rashid Abba, who had the
prestigious role of head coach for the week-long Creating Chances programme,
were key to the significant success of an event that also involved Hull City
and Tottenham Hotspur. It was staged daily at the Changping Sports Bureau in
the Chinese capital since last Friday.

Abba was assisted by club community coaches Kate Holmes and Jonny Wright,
and the work they did alongside the other Premier League representatives
proved hugely popular with the 44 physical education teachers and 96
children from Beijing who took part.

King was proud of the their contribution. "The coaches performed tirelessly
in their delivery of quality coaching," he said. "They have left a lasting
impression on the young people that they coached by improving their levels
of enthusiasm and knowledge of football.

"They have been outstanding ambassadors for the club and the game. Their
commitment has accelerated the learning process of the participants, leaving
behind them inspired young footballers who will never forget the club that
travelled 5,000 miles to coach them."

With Abba leading the way, daily developmental sessions were held under the
Premier Skills banner along with the Creating Chances community programme
for 10-13-year-old children. Both have been held in tandem with the Beijing
Football Association with the aim of leaving a lasting legacy behind.

Abba said: This has been a very successful project. The pupils have attended
every single day without fail. What we've been teaching the young children
is the basics of football. So we've taught them how to pass, dribble and
shoot the ball. In between the sessions we delivered question and answer
workshops."

On Thursday, first-team players Jonathan Spector, Jack Collison, Junior
Stanislas and Josh Payne took time out from their schedule to lend their
support, as did former players Tony Gale and Tony Cottee. They got involved
in the sessions as well as speaking to the international media that had
gathered for the Community Festival, which was also attended by Premier
League Chief Executive Richard Scuadamore and Premier Skills head coach
Warren Barton.

Spector said: "It is great to be involved with the club's community work and
see what the Premier League have been doing here in China. It is nice to see
such a big turnout of young children. It looked like they were all having a
good time which is the most important thing.

"The children are very good listeners. The language barrier is difficult and
it is hard to understand each other but the translators have been very
helpful. The most important thing is for the children to enjoy themselves
and the game. It is such a wonderful sport. It is something that I love to
do and hopefully they will take much away from the experience."

A West Ham United supporters' team is looking for new players for the coming
season
31.07.2009

A football team made up of West Ham United supporters is looking for new
players for the 2009/10 season. West Ham United IFC, who play their home
matches at Flanders in East Ham, is made up entirely of West Ham United
season-ticket holders. The team regularly meet up with supporters' teams
from other clubs on matchday mornings for a game, with the fixtures
generally corresponding with the games the West Ham first team play.

The club has been around since 1996, forming after fans on internet message
boards suggested meeting up for a game. Since then they have gone from
strength to strength and will go into the season on a high after being voted
iFA team of the season and reaching the semi-finals at a recent nationwide
tournament.

Assistant manager Vincent White says they are looking for players who can
help improve the team. He said: "It's a good standard of football and we
really want to attract players of that calibre to come and join us.

"We play our home games at Flanders in East Ham and typically we'll kick-off
at 10.30am on a matchday, which gives players time to get where they want to
get afterwards."

All the action as the Hammers tackled Beijing Guoan at the Barclays Asia
Trophy
31.07.2009

Barclays Asia Trophy
West Ham United v Beijing Guoan
Workers Stadium, Beijing
Friday 31 July
6pm
Referee: Baojie Sun

Full-time - West Ham United 2-0 Beijing Guoan

94 min - The final whistle goes and West Ham confirm third-place in the
Barclays Asia Trophy.

93 min - GOAL! West Ham finish on a high courtesy of Zavon Hines. The
Jamaican sprang the offside trap and streaked clear of the Beijing defence
before poking the ball through the goalkeeper's legs with his left foot.
Good stuff from the 20-year-old.

92 min - An anxious time for West Ham as Guoan force a late corner, but the
ball is cleared.

90 min - I was wrong about the substitutions. Jordan Spence is on for Mark
Noble. We're going to have three added minutes. With Scott Parker off the
pitch, Rob Green has taken over as captain for the final few minutes.

89 min - Cole sets Savio free down the right. He cuts into the box and his
cross is dropped by the goalkeeper Sipeng and drops to Hines, but the
defender was able to get in a challenge and the ball loops over the
crossbar.

88 min - Payne is booked for a rather late challenge on the No31. The
resulting free-kick is launched almost into space by Fei.

85 min - Kieron Dyer has done well today and his work is at an end. Savio is
his replacement. Unless Zola wants to give Robert Green a rest, that is it
for West Ham's replacement-wise!

84 min - Beijing haven't given this up just yet and a cross into the box
ends with the No37 Tixiang dragging a shot wide of the near post. West Ham
break and a loose header gives Hines a shooting chance, but his first-time
attempt is straight at the goalkeeper.

82 min - A great chance for Dyer to double West Ham's lead, but he delays
his shot and the defender gets in to block.

80 min - GOAL! Noble launches a right-wing corner into the danger zone and
Gabbidon looses his marker before powering a header just inside the near
post. The goal is greeted with a big celebration from the West Ham players.
Gabbidon has had a horrendous time with injuries, so everyone in the
dressing room will be delighted for the Wales defender.

79 min - Two more substitutions from Zola. Jimenez is off and Zavon Hines is
on, while Parker is replaced by Josh Payne.

78 min - Noble crosses and Stanislas tries to get a shot in, but the ball
rolls behind for a corner.

77 min - Bryan is replaced by No31 Hu Qiling.

76 min - While West Ham haven't looked that potent up front, Gabbidon and
Tomkins have looked very assured at the back.

75 min - Cole chests down Noble's pass, but Stanislas does not react quickly
enough to burst through the home defence.

74 min - Green goes in bravely to gather a curling cross before being bumped
by a Guoan player.

72 min - A second change from Zola. Collison is replaced by Junior
Stanislas. His pace and trickery could conjure an opening for the visitors.

71 min - The ball just won't break for West Ham inside the Guoan box.
Parker's touch lets him down from Collison's cross and the England
midfielder is then penalised for a high boot.

69 min - Noble finds Cole, who instantly releases Dyer with a neat flick.
The midfielder cuts the ball back to the England striker but his shot is
blocked. Good football there.

68 min - The spectre of penalties is growing ever larger...

67 min - Sun has a speculative effort from 30 yards out that has Green
scrambling, but the ball lands on top of the net.

66 min - West Ham make their first change in personnel. Bondz N'Gala is on
for Ilunga. The big man is going to slot in at left-back.

65 min - Cole and Jimenez combine to find Collison. The Wales midfielder
rolls the ball to the Chilean, but his shot rolls wide of the far post.

63 min - Vitor robs Noble and runs at the West Ham defence. He shoots from
25 yards but it is blocked.

62 min - Yet another change for Guoan. Wang is replaced by No42 Sun Kaj. I'm
struggling to keep up with all these substitutions...

60 min - Another change for Guoan. No41 Kou is on for skipper Sui. The
corner is cleared. Half-an-hour to go here in Beijing.

59 min - Guoan win a free-kick about 40 yards from goal. Captain Sui has a
dig but it is blocked and rolls through to Green. West Ham break and
Collison forces another corner.

57 min - That was a good chance for West Ham. Dyer bursts on to a through
pass and gets into the box, but he delays his cross and the ball is blocked
behind. Park is replaced by No2 Lang Zheng. Tomkins heads the corner over
the bar.

56 min - Guoan's No40 Park goes down after appearing to catch his studs in
the turf. He is hobbling and is going to be replaced.

54 min - A chance goes begging. Cole gets in behind the Guoan defence and
goalkeeper, but is pushed wide. He lays the ball to Jimenez, but the ball is
cleared.

51 min - Wang tries to beat Green with an audacious volley from 30 yards but
the ball lands on top of the net.

49 min - No sign of a goal just yet. If the game ends goalless then we will
have a penalty shoot-out.

46 min - We're off and running again...

The second half is rapidly approaching and the Guoan players have a huddle
before breaking and getting ready to kick-off. Guoan have made a couple of
changes. No9 Vitor is on for Vogt, while the No37 Li Tixiang is on on the
right side of midfield.

While you relax with a half-time cup of tea, here is some more information
about Beijing Guoan. They were formed in 1992 following a restructuring of
the Chinese Super League. In 2003, they were renamed Beijing Hyundai Motor
Football Team after signing a sponsorship deal, but reverted back to Guoan
in 2006. They have won the Chinese title seven times and their biggest
rivals are Tianjin Teda.

Half-time - West Ham United 0-0 Beijing Guoan

47 min - West Ham have a chance to score right at the end of the half, but
neither Jimenez nor Parker are able to get a shot away and the chance is
lost. Seconds later, the half-time whistle is blown by Baojie Sun.

45 min - Guoan win a corner wide on the left. Wang takes with his right
foot, but it is too deep and Tomkins flicks the ball out for a throw-in with
his head.

43 min - West Ham are finishing the half strongly here.

42 min - Dyer has the ball in the back of the net courtesy of a neat finish,
but again the assistant referee has his flag raised. It was a close one, but
he may have been just offside. The opening had been created following good
work by Collison to win the ball from a Guoan defender.

40 min - Bryan is back into the fray after a quick drink. Ilunga and Jimenez
combine outside the Guoan penalty area but Dyer is again caught offside.

38 min - Something out of nothing from Cole, who collects the ball 30 yards
from goal and spins before unleashing a low shot that tests Sipeng. The
goalkeeper dives to his right and holds the ball with relative ease. Up the
other end and Bryan is caught by Tomkins and the stretcher-bearers are
called into action again.

36 min - A bit more information about the lively Wang. He was once part of
the same youth team as Kaka at the Brazilian club Sao Paolo.

35 min - Park and Cole are both back on the pitch.

34 min - Cole and Park are hurt in an aerial challenge. The Chinese player
is stretchered off with what looked like a knee injury, but he is straight
up again on the touchline. Cole is also treated by physio Andy Rolls and
takes the opportunity to have a quick drink.

33 min - The Guoan right winger Wang Ke looks like a threat every time he
gets the ball at his feet, but his final ball has sometimes been lacking.

32 min - News from Edgbaston and the Ashes. Australia are 155-3. Back here,
Cole and Jimenez try to combine inside the penalty area, but are thwarted by
the Guoan defence.

31 min - Mark Noble wins a corner. It is taken short to Dyer, but his low
shot is blocked and the ball is cleared.

29 min - We're approaching the half-hour mark and Wang works Green again,
cutting inside Ilunga and shooting low at the goalkeeper with his left foot.

26 min - West Ham throw a few bodies forward and keep the ball for more than
30 seconds, but Spector's cross is caught by Sipeng with Cole threatening.

25 min - Guoan win a controversial corner. It looked like Robert Green
easily caught the loose ball within the goalline. No matter as Gabbidon
clears the corner.

23 min - Dyer tries to beat the offside trap and get on to Scott Parker's
through ball. He looked onside when the ball was played, but the flag went
up.

21 min - Vogt is penalised for handball. The 32-year-old Brazilian has
previously turned out for clubs in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and spent
last season in Ukraine at APEP Pitsilia.

20 min - Vogt has another shot on the turn, but it flies well over the
crossbar.

19 min - As well as the noisy home supporters, there are plenty of West Ham
fans here too. I can see flags representing the Leighton Buzzard and Norwich
Hammers.

17 min - West Ham have a sustained period of possession here, but they can't
find a way through the Guoan rearguard just yet.

15 min - Vogt tries to play in Bryan. Tomkins tracks the Nigerian's run and
clears the ball to safety.

14 min - A slight worry for Cole as he collides with Sipeng and is rubbing
his right hip. He's up without receiving any treatment and back into the
action.

13 min - West Ham get numbers into the Guoan penalty area. Dyer crosses
towards Cole, but the ball is cleared.

12 min - Guoan No43 Paulo Vogt turns away from his marker and shoots from 25
yards, but the ball barely reaches the goal.

10 min - Luis Jimenez curls a well-struck free-kick around the wall from the
left-hand edge of the penalty area, but it is safely gathered by Zhang
Sipeng.

9 min - West Ham are struggling to get their passing game going here on what
is a lush playing surface. They finally do so as Parker and Dyer combine.
The latter slips the ball through for Ilunga to run on to, but the DR Congo
man is felled just outside the penalty area.

7 min - Despite making a number of changes to their lineup, Guoan are giving
this a good go. Wang has a shot from at least 40 yards, but it flies
harmlessly wide of the target.

5 min - Parker gives the ball away in midfield and allows Paulo Vogt a
shooting chance. The ball hits Gabbidon and leaves Green wrong-footed, but
thankfully it drifts wide of the post. The resulting corner is cleared by a
combination of Cole and Gabbidon. Cole appears to have caught Park Chulwoo
with his boot and the Guoan defender receives some attention.

4 min - A cross from the right from Wang is knocked out for a corner by
Gabbidon. Xue Fe crosses and Carlton Cole heads the ball clear.

3 min - It is encouraging to see Luis Boa Morte sitting on the bench with
his team-mates and the coaching staff. The Portuguese is a popular member of
the squad.

2 min - Guoan No17 Wang cuts inside on his left foot and shoots, but his
tame effort is easily gathered by Green.

1 min - Carlton Cole kicks off and West Ham are first to show against a
Guoan team showing eleven changes from Wednesday's semi-final. A Danny
Gabbidon back-pass nearly causes Robert Green some embarrassment as he
attempts to hack the ball clear and loses his footing.

6.01pm - Scott Parker and his opposite number Sui Dongliang exchange
pennants before referee Baojie Sun tosses the coin. West Ham will kick-off.

5.58pm - News of Sir Bobby Robson's death has been announced here. The
thoughts of everyone at West Ham United are with his family and friends at
this sad time. Both sides will wear black armbands and a minute's silence
will be held prior to kick-off in his honour.

5.55pm - Kick-off is rapidly approaching here at the Workers Stadium, and
the home fans are making plenty of noise. Can West Ham sign-off their visit
to China with a victory and silence them in the process?

5.47pm - Beijing Guoan have made a number of changes from the team that
pushed Hull so hard, as they have a long away trip to Chinese Super League
bottom side Chongqing Lifan on Sunday. Guoan are a point clear at the top of
the 16-team table.

5.38pm - Some confusion over the West Ham team. James Tomkins is starting
and not Matthew Upson. Apologies for that.

5.30pm - Four changes from the semi-final defeat tonight. Jonathan Spector,
Danny Gabbidon, Mark Noble and Scott Parker are in for Julien Faubert, James
Collins, Luis Boa Morte and Junior Stanislas. Again, the remaining members
of the Hammers squad are all on the bench, with six substitutes allowed, one
of which must be a goalkeeper.

5.25pm - It is hot and extremely humid here in Beijing tonight. This will be
a test for West Ham against a fit and organised Guoan side who got stronger
as their semi-final against Hull went on.

Good evening from the Workers Stadium in Beijing.

West Ham United will be eager to finish their Barclays Asia Trophy campaign
with a win over Beijing Guoan after being beaten 1-0 in their semi-final
against Tottenham Hotspur. Guoan were themselves beaten 5-4 on penalties
following a 1-1 draw with Hull City.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola has named a strong side again for today's
game at a sweltering Workers Stadium. Only Luis Boa Morte, who injured his
knee against Spurs, is unavailable.

A little bit of information about today's opponents. Guoan were formed as
recently as 1992 and compete in the Chinese Super League. They finished
third last season.

West Ham have confirmed the capture of 18-year-old Swiss full back Fabio
Daprela. The ambitious under 19 international finally completed his move to
United today following the successful competion of a medical and told
whufc.com: "I am very happy to come here as it is a great club. They have a
great manager and it is good to be here. "I want to play for the first team
in the Premier League. I think I can learn a lot from the manger and people
like Matthew Upson and Mark Noble and I am really looking forward to the
season starting."
The former Grasshoppers defender, who was a member of last year's first team
squad leaves the Zurich-based club with whom he was entering the final year

Kieron Dyer has expressed his sadness at the passing of former England
manager Sir Bobby Robson, who died earlier today. Dyer - who played under
Robson at Newcastle but shared a special link through their previous spells
at Ipswich Town - revealed that he discovered the news just before West
Ham's Asia Trophy match with Beijing Guoan earlier today. "I was told five
minutes before kick-off so that was a shock to the system," said Dyer. "He
had beaten cancer so many times, I thought he would go on into his 100s -
but it wasn't to be. He was a massive influence in my career - not just on
the pitch but also off the pitch. "Off the pitch he treated me like a son.
We had the Ipswich connection so when he was at Newcastle he made a beeline
straight for me. He was like a father figure to me and I am going to miss
him. "At the minute's silence it did overwhelm me. I am just going to look
at all the great memories he brought to my life and all the special bits,
like in team talks when he used to call me Kevin because he would forget
names! "Hopefully back home, instead of a minute's silence they have a
standing ovation with a minute's clapping to celebrate his life because what
he brought to the game of football is phenomenal."
Dyer's comments were choed by Irons boss Gianfranco Zola, who added: "He is
a man I respected very much. He was always positive and always smiling. He
has been a great ambassador for football in general and I pay my respects to
him. "He is a big loss."

West Ham ended their trip to China with a win against locan side Beijing
Guoan at the Worker's Stadium this morning. Late goals from Danny Gabbidon
and Zavon Hines ensured the Hammers won this third place play off against a
second string Guoan side, who had sent most of their first team players home
in preparation for a vital league fixture this weekend. United started the
game in similar fashion to Wednesday's disappointing defeat gainst
Tottenham, but were fully deserved winners following a strong second half
performance. However Gianfranco Zola's side had to wait until the 80th
minute to break the deadlock when Danny Gabbidon nodded home a Mark Noble
corner. A deep cross was strongly headed back towards the bottom right hand
corner by thwe Welsh centre half, playing his second successive game since
returning from injury. The win was wrapped up in the third minute of injury
time when substitute Hines, on as a 79th minute replacement for Luis Jimenez
picked up a through ball some 40 yards from goal before finishing expertly
between the keeper's legs. The Hammers return to England later this weekend
with just one more game planned before the start of the new Premier League
season - that being against Napoli at the Boleyn eight days from now.

Swiss defender completes Premier League switch

West Ham have announced the signing of Swiss starlet Fabio Daprela for an
undisclosed fee. The teenage defender arrives from Grasshopper Club Zurich
and has penned a five-year contract. Daprela has recently been competing in
the European U19 Championships and flew into England direct from that
tournament to complete the deal. A number of top Italian sides were reported
to be tracking his progress, but it is the Hammers who have secured his
signature. "I am very happy to come here as it is a great club," Daprela
told West Ham's official website. "I saw the team play on television last
season and it is a very good team. They have a great manager and it is good
to be here. "I want to play for the first-team in the Premier League. I
think I can learn a lot from the manager and people like Matthew Upson and
Mark Noble. "I am really looking forward to the season starting."

Hammers end on a high
Gabbidon and Hines seal unconvincing win

West Ham rounded off their trip to China with a 2-0 victory over Beijing
Guoan in the Asia Trophy on Friday. Late efforts from Danny Gabbidon and
Zavon Hines helped the Hammers seal third place in the Far East tournament,
but there is much to work to be done by the Premier League side ahead of the
new season. Gianfranco Zola's side made a positive start to proceedings, but
were all often pegged back by a lively Beijing attacking unit. West Ham did
enjoy plenty of possession, but found lone frontman Carlton Cole isolated on
too many occasions. Kieron Dyer looked the most likely to link up with the
England striker, but he was haunted by the assistant referee's flag. He did
get the ball in the net as the first half came to a close, with a smart
finish from a tight angle, but he was adjudged to have strayed offside for
the umpteenth time. The Hammers continued to make little progress throughout
the second period, despite the game opening up as tired legs began to tell.
Dyer's willingness to get forward will have pleased Zola, but his front line
looked toothless in truth. In the end it was left to centre-half Gabbidon to
put West Ham en route to success as he rose highest to meet a Mark Noble
corner 10 minutes from time. With Beijing piling men forward, Hines was then
allowed to race clear in stoppage time to put the seal on a satisfying, but
uninspiring, victory.

WEST HAM delivered a late onetwo to see off Beijing Guoan in the third place
play-off match of the Asia Trophy. Danny Gabbidon headed home in the 80th
minute and substitute Zavon Hines added a second in injury time. Carlton
Cole forced a good first-half save from Zhang. Cole cleverly sent Kieron
Dyer clear but the home defence recovered just in time to deny the former
Newcastle midfielder. The Hammers opened the scoring when Gabbidon broke
free of his marker to send a towering header in from Mark Noble's corner.
Their second goal came when Hines sprinted clear of the defence before
firing home a low shot.

Gudmundsson declared bankrupt
1 August 2009 | 09:10 - AAP
The World Game

Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the former owner and chairman of English Premier
League side West Ham United, has been declared bankrupt, an Icelandic court
ruled on Friday.
Judges in Reykjavik agreed with Gudmundsson's argument that he had no
reasonable expectation of any future income and did not have sufficient
assets to service his debts. "Reykjavik District court has today accepted
Bjorgolfur Gudmundssons request that his estate will be entered into
insolvency proceedings," his spokesman and former West Ham vice-chairman
Asgeir Fridgeirsson said in a statement. The 68-year-old, estimated last
year to be worth 1.1 billion dollars by the 2008 Forbes Rich List, snapped
up London side West Ham in 2006 for STG85 million ($A169.9million). But
court documents showed that the debt of his estate totalled just over 529
million euros ($A902.81million). Gudmundsson lost much of his fortune during
the recent global economic turmoil owing to his investments in two of
Iceland's major banks: Landsbanki and Straumur Burdaras Investment Bank.
Both were nationalised by the Icelandic government after they borrowed
beyond their means, effectively wiping out the stakes of shareholders. "I
now face almost complete lack of income as I am no longer in the employment
of the aforementioned companies and earn now just the minimum wage,"
Gudmundsson wrote in a letter to judges. Once the second-richest man in
Iceland, his plight forced him to put West Ham up for sale and the club was
acquired by asset management group CB Holding for a reported STG100 million
($A199.88million) in June. Once that sale was completed, Gudmundsson and
vice-chairman Asgeir Fridgeirsson both left the club.

Heartbroken Kieron Dyer mourns the death of Sir Bobby Robson
Hammers star says former boss was 'like a father'
The London Paper
by: Brad Ashton
31 July 2009

West Ham midfielder Kieron Dyer today expressed his sadness at the death of
Sir Bobby Robson, describing him as a father figure who had a massive impact
on his career.
Dyer began his career at Robson's former club Ipswich and had only just made
his £6.5m switch to Newcastle when the ex-England boss took over at St
James' Park in 1999. He was only told of his passing five minutes before the
Hammers' Barclays Asia Trophy clash with Beijing Guoan today. And the shock
proved too much for the England international as he broke down during the
minute's silence ahead of the game, before being comforted by team-mate
Carlton Cole. Dyer, 30, said: "Obviously he was a massive influence in my
career, not just on the pitch but also off the pitch. "I was told five
minutes before kick-off so that was a shock to the system. "He had beaten
cancer so many times I thought he would go on into his 100s but it wasn't to
be. "At the minutes silence it did overwhelm me. I am just going to look at
all the great memories he brought to my life and all the special bits, like
in team talks when he used to call me Kevin because he would forget names.
"Hopefully back home instead of a minute's silence they have a standing
ovation with a minute's clapping to celebrate his life because what he has
brought to the game of football is phenomenal. "Off the pitch he treated me
like a son. We had the Ipswich connection so when he was at Newcastle he
made a beeline straight for me. "He was like a father figure to me and I am
going to miss him."
Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola described Robson as a "great ambassador" for
football and believes his passing is a big loss to the game. "There are
wonderful memories," said the Italian. "He is a man I respected very much.
He was always positive and always smiling. "He has been a great ambassador
for football in general and I pay my respects to him. He is a big loss for
us." The Hammers beat Beijing Guoan 2-0 at Workers Stadium to secure third
place at the Asia Trophy. Danny Gabbidon and substitute Zavon Hines scored
inside the last ten minutes for the London club and Zola is confident his
side are heading in the right direction. "This is the third 'real' game that
we have played," he added. "The team is certainly on the way up, we played
better than we had at other games. "We are not at our best but we are
getting close to it."
