Zola welcomes Frank
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola is excited about the prospect of working with new signing
Frank Nouble
22.07.2009

Gianfranco Zola has spoken about his happiness at securing the services of
Frank Nouble after the striker pledged his future to West Ham United. The
manager will not get a chance to meet up with his new forward - signed on a
five-year deal after leaving Chelsea - until he returns from Austria later
this week but he is excited at the prospect of seeing him in claret and
blue. "We are delighted to have Frank here," Zola said. "Everyone has spoken
about how he is a talented boy. He is young, enthusiastic and the type of
player we like. "So we will welcome him, try to improve him further and
hopefully he will help make us better too. He is young but that is part of
our plan. We want to work with senior players and improve the young players
we have - that is the plan. If we can keep on this path, then hopefully we
will have success."
Nouble, who turns 18 in September, is relishing the prospect of getting down
to work on the Chadwell Heath training pitches with his new team-mates. "I
was training with great players at Chelsea and that definitely helped me
become who I am now but sometimes you need to a move into a different
environment," said Nouble. "The environment I am coming into now is
definitely not lower. The players are in and around the same ability. I will
be able to learn so much. There are great players here and I am very
fortunate to get the chance to play with them."
The teenager will be helped by knowing Steve Clarke from his Chelsea days,
with the first-team coach having proved something of a mentor as he rose
through the ranks.
"Steve Clarke has always given me a little word in my ear, talking to me and
encouraging me," confirmed Nouble, "He has known me for a long time. He
would get the coaches at Chelsea to talk to me and tell me to work hard. "I
know coming here now will be about hard work and I am not shy about that. I
am looking forward to working hard with him and Gianfranco Zola. I am
looking forward to meeting them and everyone that works for the club and I
can't wait to get started."

Boa on WHUTV

Luis Boa Morte has told WHUTV he is expecting a tough game against Turkish
side Bursaspor
22.07.2009

Luis Boa Morte has told WHUTV he is looking forward to finally getting his
firs taste of match action under his belt in Austria. The Portugal forward,
who returned to the international fold after two years at the tail-end of
last season, is expected to line up in an experienced team when West Ham
United face Turkish side Bursaspor on Wednesday evening. Boa Morte was one
of those expected to play against Werder Bremen on Saturday before the game
was called off following heavy rain. "That would have been a massive game
because they are a very good team so that was a bit of the downside of the
training camp," admitted Boa Morte. "I don't know much about Bursaspor but
we expect a tough game. "We know how the Turkish players are and how they
work so it will be a tough game and another good game."
After enduring twice-daily sessions in the searing heat in Austria, the
31-year-old said he has found the going tough, although he knows the benefit
of the hard work now will come to the fore later in the season. Boa Morte
also praised the methods employed by manager Gianfranco Zola and his
coaching staff. "So far it has been good as we have been working hard," he
added. "It is the most difficult part of the season but the most important.
We know how important it is for us, but so far it has been good.
"It has been a different pre-season to other pre-seasons as we have been
running a lot with the ball so I like it."

Dyer scores in Turkish test
WHUFC.com
A hard-working hour's football from Kieron Dyer was capped by a goal in a
lively friendly in Austria
22.07.2009

West Ham United 1-1 Bursaspor

Kieron Dyer struck his first goal in West Ham United colours and Luis
Jimenez made his debut in a creditable 1-1 draw against Turkish side
Bursaspor in a stifling Bad Rakersburg on Wednesday night.

England midfielder Dyer, who got an hour's play under his belt to continue
his excellent pre-season, struck after just three minutes following a lovely
pass from James Collins, who himself was one of the most impressive
performers on view. Jimenez also looked good in his first run-out for the
Hammers since his move from Internazionale last month but it was not to be a
winning bow as a result of the 54th-minute equaliser from Turgay Bahadir.

Gianfranco Zola had named a strong starting eleven with Jimenez wearing his
preferred No17 shirt and England trio Robert Green, Matthew Upson, wearing
the captain's armband, and Carlton Cole along with Portugal's Luis Boa Morte
all getting their first action of pre-season. Zola also had to think about
another friendly to come on Thursday evening - across the border in Slovenia
against ND Mura 05.

Before then was the challenge of Bursaspor, and the club who finished sixth
in Turkey last season named a strong side. Midfielders Huseyin Cimsir and
Ali Tandogan are both Turkish internationals, striker Shin Young Rok has
been capped three times by the Korean Republic and goalkeeper Dimitar
Ivankov has represented Bulgaria 54 times. Austrian midfielder Bahadir
naturally proved popular amongst the local support

It was the Hammers fans who were out in force though for this second game of
the Austrian tour after last Saturday's match with Werder Bremen was
cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch. West Ham had drawn 1-1 with SVL
Flavia Solva exactly a week ago in their opening fixture in Austria.

Jimenez was lively from the off and showed neat skill on 20 minutes after a
burst from Junior Stanislas. At the other end, Collins and Upson had to be
alert on several occasions to deny the Turkish side decent opportunities.
Stanislas was then again involved ten minutes before the interval when
combining well with Cole.

The second half was a scrappier affair with substitutions and some hefty
challenges holding up the play. Savio and Zavon Hines entered the fray at
the interval for Stanislas and Cole, with Marek Stech replacing Robert Green
in goal. Dyer and Collins made way for Payne and Bondz N'Gala respectively.
The focus was brought back to the game on 75 minutes though when delightful
skill from Jimenez nearly set Hines away.

The changes continued on 80 minutes with Jordan Spence, Georg Grasser and
Oliver Lee replacing Upson, Jimenez and Jack Collison - who had scored
against Flavia Solva. A winning goal failed to materialise though but Zola
will have been pleased with the run-out especially for the likes of Julien
Faubert and Herita Ilunga, wearing his new No23 shirt, as they both played a
full 90 minutes in the Thermenarena.

West Ham United 1-1 Bursaspor

All the action from Bad Radkersburg as West Ham United drew a goal apiece
against Bursaspor
22.07.2009

Pre-season friendly
West Ham United v Bursaspor
Thermenarena, Bad Radkersburg
Wednesday 22 July
Kick-off: 6pm (5pm UK time)

Final score - West Ham United 1-1 Bursaspor

Once again, the referee blows dead on the minute mark and the Hammers'
second game of their Austria tour ends in another 1-1 draw. Zola's side
looked in control before the break but lost their rhythm slightly in the
second, which may be attributed to all of the changes made. The four
international players will be feeling benefits of at least 45 minutes of
match-time, Dyer will by boosted by his goal and Jimenez gave plenty of
reason to be excited with some great touches during his near 80-minute run
out.

West Ham conclude their Austria adventure when they play ND Mura in Slovenia
on Thursday.

90 min - Full time in Bad Radkersburg.

88 min - Faubert makes sure that Bursaspor do not get that chance as he
slides in bravely to take the ball away from Zeybek. Bursaspor have made
another change, with Muhammet Demir coming on in place of Sen.

87 min - But back here in Austria we are still looking for that
match-winning chance. But in all honesty, neither side look like they are
going to create it at the moment.

84 min - Do not forget that if you have not had your fill of West Ham United
action this evening then the Under-18s are playing at Tiptree United this
evening. whufc.com will have live text updates from that game as well, with
kick-off at 7.30pm UK time.

83 min - Both teams are giving it their all, but goal-scoring chances are
few and far between at present.

79 min - It looks like more changes for West Ham as Collison, Upson, Boa
Morte and Jimenez all leave the field to be replaced by Georg Grasser, Ollie
Lee, Anthony Edgar and Jordan Spence. Grasser gets a big cheer from the home
support. Can he become the second Austrian to score in his own country
today?

77 min - Lovely play from Jimenez as he flicks the ball over his marker
before playing in Hines. Sadly, the offside flag denies the half-time
substitute a chance on goal.

75 min - Two more substitutes for Bursaspor as Sen and the goal-scorer
Bahadir make way for Daniel Menendes Rezende and Yanzil Tuncer

73 min - Good header from Upson to just steer the ball away from Rok as he
threatens to latch onto a through-ball.

70 min - After those couple of minutes of madness, order has been restored.
The player Bursaspor brought on to replace Ipek is Halil Zeyback. It did
originally appear that he had been sent off, but after a count of the
players it became clear Bursaspor were simply ordered to replace him.

66 min - Tempers flare as Ipek flies into Boa Morte from behind. The players
all crowd in together until the referee orders Ipek to be substituted. Zola
responds by bringing on N'Gala for Collins.

62 min - Zola makes his fourth change as Dyer comes off for Josh Payne. The
West Ham No7 will no doubt have felt the benefit of a 60 minute workout as
well as his first goal of the season.

61 min - Upson becomes the first West Ham player to get booked as he brings
down Rok on the edge of the area. After much debate, the resulting free-kick
is blasted well over the bar.

57 min - Free-kick to the Turkish side on the right touchline is cleared by
Julien Faubert, who has looked solid at right-back so far.

54 min - GOAL! Bursaspor get themselves back into the game as Rok back-heels
the ball to Bahadir and the Austrian finishes hard and low past Stech, much
to the delight of the home crowd.

52 min - A good break from the Hammers sees Dyer cross from the right
touchline towards Hines. The West Ham No9 tries to get the ball under
control but space is tight and the chance vanishes.

48 min - The first song of the day is heard and it is the West Ham fans who
have claimed it with a rendition of 'Bubbles'. I did not detect an Austrian
twang to it so I must assume the support from the UK is making itself heard.

46 min - Bursaspor get us underway in the second period. They look to have
made a change as well with Tandogan making way for Okan Ipek.

Zola spent much of the break speaking to Savio and Zavon Hines, and the duo
have come on in place of Stanislas and Cole. Marek Stech has also taken over
in goal from Green.

Half time

45 min - The referee blows his whistle dead on the 45-minute mark and both
teams trudge off. No doubt they will need to take on lots of fluids during
the interval after 45 minutes in the heat.

44 min - We are approaching half time and the Hammers seem relatively in
control at the moment as Sen and Collison tangle. The Hammers are awarded
the free-kick and Sen joins Tandogan in the referee's book for kicking the
ball away.

39 min- Boa Morte is hacked down from behind and clutches his ankle, but is
back on his feet a few seconds later. Bursaspor are then awarded a free-kick
on the right touchline and as it is whipped in Collins collides with Rok and
the 22-year-old forward stays down amid some half-hearted appeals for a
penalty.

37 min - Collins show his bravery once more as the throws himself in the way
of a shot from Voltan Sen to give Bursaspor a corner. But, once again, the
Wales international clears the danger with his head. Could we be seeing an
early contender for man of the match emerge?

34 min - A one-two between Cole and Stanislas almost sees the winger play in
forward in with a low cross. Seconds later Stanislas races clear but loses
control of the ball and the chance is wasted.

32 min - Has tangles with Ilunga and West Ham are given the free-kick. A
long ball forward is then handled by Tandogan and a free-kick is awarded.
The Bursaspor No2 then responds by kicking the ball away and he is booked.

30 min - More good defending from Collins as he halts a dangerous run from
Rok with perfectly-time sliding tackle. He then completes his defensive
duties by rising highest to head the ball clear.

27 min - Strong work from Cole on the right-hand touchline forces Ayhan
Uzumcu to haul him down. West Ham will need to make use of Cole's power as
he seems to have the better of his marker at present.

25 min - Good defending from Collins now as he slides in on Rok in the
penalty area. The Korean has looked a handful for the Hammers' defence so
far. Ilunga has picked up a slight knock, but seems fine to continue.

24 min - A good solid header from Upson clears the danger but the ball comes
in once more and Rok gets up above Collins to power a header at goal.
Thankfully, Green is there to gather the ball in his arms.

20 min - A good burst of speed from Stanislas followed by some nice footwork
from Jimenez as he side-steps his marker. West Ham have shown some good
attacking intent so far.

18 min - Corner to Bursaspor as Stanislas gets back to block an attempted
cross. The ball is played in and after several rebounds Herita Ilunga is
fouled and West Ham win the free-kick.

16 min - Green is called into action for the first time as Rok gathers a
lose ball in the area and tries to beat him at his near post. The England
international is equal to it and dives to his right to collect the ball.

14 min - If you have been following our coverage of the tour so far, you
will know that the weather has been fantastic and tonight is no different.
At training this morning the temperature was clocked at 42 degrees and
although that has dropped now, the players will still be feeling the heat
out on the pitch.

12 min - Zola has sent his side out in what looks like a 4-3-3 formation
with Collison holding in midfield and Jimenez and Dyer in front of him. Boa
Morte is providing the width, while Stanislas is in his usual position on
the left.

11 min - Jimenez gets his first shot at goal in in a West Ham shirt. The
ball takes a deflection and the Hammers win their second corner. Stanislas
takes it but Collins and Cole cannot quite direct it goalwards and the ball
is cleared.

7 min - Bursaspor have gathered themselves now and are starting to find
their rhythm. Although they have had most of the ball for the past couple of
minutes, they have not managed to get it in their opponents half yet.

4 min - The poor stadium announcer had not even finished reading the teams
out before Dyer struck. The West Ham No7's strike was greeted by a huge
cheer from those watching in Bad Radkersburg, so the Hammers certainly seem
to be well backed tonight.

3 min - Goal! West Ham get off to the best possible start. A superb ball
forward from Collins is headed down into the path of Kieron Dyer who beats
Ivankov with a first-time shot. Great stuff from the Hammers

2 min - Positive start from the Hammers and Jimenez is involved straight
away. He runs forward and forces Tandogan into conceding a corner. The new
signing, who is wearing number 17 tonight, took the corner but Cole cannot
quite tee up James Collins for a shot.

1 min - Jack Collison and Cole get the game going

5.59pm It looks as though we may be a couple of minutes late kicking-off as
the teams are still lining up in the tunnel. Upson is the West Ham captain
for the evening and he leads the Hammers out in their new navy blue away
kit.

5.55pm Bursaspor have also named a strong team. Midfielders Huseyin Cimsir
and Ali Tandogan are both Turkish internationals, striker Shin Young Rok has
been capped three times by South Korea and goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov has
represented Bulgaria 54 times. Austrian midfielder Turgay Bahadir should
prove popular amongst the local support.

5.50pm The teams are in and, as expected, Gianfranco Zola has named a very
strong line-up. The big news is new signing Luis Jimenez makes his first
appearance in a West Ham shirt, while Green, Upson Boa Morte and Cole are
all on show for the first time this pre-season.

5.35pm Good evening from Bad Radkersburg. We are just 35 minutes from
kick-off now and both teams are out on the pitch warming up. Final team
line-ups are yet to be confirmed, but we will bring them to you as soon as
we have them. West Ham United are expected to name a strong side for their
second friendly of the Austria tour, with Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Luis
Jimenez, Luis Boa Morte and Carlton Cole all expected to feature at some
stage.

The Stadium PA is playing some English dance music to help make the West Ham
players and their supporters, who seem to be out numbering their Turkish
counterparts, at home. There is one gigantic St. George's flag tied to the
front of the main stand with WHUFC printed in the middle, so it looks like
the Hammers will be getting some good support tonight from both home and
abroad.

West Ham United: Green, Faubert, Collins, Upson, Ilunga, Collison, Jimenez,
Boa Morte, Dyer, Stanislas, Cole
Subs: Stech, N'Gala, Spence, Grasser, Lee, Savio, Hines, Edgar

Bursaspor: Ivankov, Tandogan, Erdogan, Keceli, Tuna, Sen, Cimsir, Ozan Has,

United
22.07.2009

Tiptree United v West Ham United U18
Pre-season friendly
Chapel Road
Wednesday 22 July 2009
Kick-off: 7.30pm

Full-time - Tiptree United 2-2 West Ham United U18

90 min - The final whistle is blown and the game ends in a draw. That was
just about a fair result after an exciting second half here. Keep an eye on
whufc.com for a full match report and reaction.

87 min - It's really livened up again here. Owen is given far too much space
and shoots from 25 yards. Larkins pushes the ball over the top. Owen takes
the corner and Bristol flicks on at the near post, only for his header to
thud against the far upright and bounce to safety!

86 min - GOAL! How the game changes! West Ham break and Moncur lets fly from
20-plus yards, giving Belcher no chance. The ball flies into the net past
the goalkeeper's despairing dive. George's Dad would have been proud of that
goal, I can tell you.

85 min - Underwood rattles the crossbar with a searing effort after latching
on to a loose clearance. That would have been game over.

84 min - The evening's 13th and final substitute is on in the shape of West
Ham goalkeeper Jake Larkins, who naturally replaces Mehmet for the final six
minutes or so.

82 min - Ward comes within inches of scoring, smashing a first-time shot
narrowly wide after the ball broke to him 20 yards from goal. Mehmet could
only watch and hope as the ball flew wide of the post.

81 min - Mehmet does well to deny Tiptree a third goal again, beating
Brown's shot aside after Underwood had teed up the substitute.

80 min - West Ham need to find another gear from somewhere. Incidentally,
the U18s will return to action on Saturday morning, when they make the short
trip to face their Tottenham Hotspur counterparts.

78 min - Underwood comes close to a third Tiptree goal, forcing Mehmet into
a fingertip save with a fine 30 yard curler. The Tiptree striker is a bit of
a goalscoring hero in north Essex, having banged in a hatful for Ridgeons
League side Harwich and Parkeston in the past. How's that for knowledge?!

75 min - West Ham appear to be running out of steam a bit here. Tiptree are
looking the more likely scorers, but the Hammers have 15 minutes to turn
things around.

70 min - Mehmet makes a fine save to deny Bristol a third Tiptree goal. West
Ham break but Purdy shoots straight at Belcher after a strong run through
the midfield.

69 min - Tiptree make their final change, bringing on No15 Brown for No8
Clarke.

68 min - Ooooooooooh! That was close. Fanimo runs at the Tiptree defence
again before finding Turgot, whose first-time shot beats Belcher but cannons
back off the inside of the far post.

67 min - Powell makes an almost instant impact, but Belcher dives low to his
left to push the ball into the side netting. The ensuring corner is cleared.

65 min - Turgot takes the flag-kick, but McNaughton can only head wide of
the target. More changes for West Ham. Subuola is replaced by Jack Powell,
while Wearen is off and Dominic Vose is on.

64 min - Typical! Fanimo almost creates an equaliser out of nothing, picking
the ball up 40 yards from goal, skipping inside Beale and unleashing a
wicked effort with the outside of his left foot that Belcher does well to
parry aside for a corner.

63 min - If it was a test of character for the Hammers before, it is doubly
so now. Tiptree have got their tails up and are pushing for a third.

61 min - GOAL! Tiptree come from behind to take the lead. Owen plays in
Underwood and the striker clips the ball past the advancing Mehmet.

60 min - Two changes for both sides. Brown and Lampe are replaced by Callum
Driver and Paco Craig for West Ham. Tiptree replace goalkeeper Ruthers and
left-back Loonan with Belcher and Nobbs.

59 min - The equaliser was a shame for the visitors, who probably just about
deserved their lead. It will now be a test of character for Hilton's
youngsters, who need to respond in kind.

56 min - GOAL! Talk about an impact. Nelson scores with his first touch,
knocking the ball into the net from close-range following good work from
fellow replacement Bristol. Sanchez won't be too happy with his role in that
goal, however, as his clearance was charged down in the lead up.

55 min - GOAL! What did I tell you?! Fanimo slips Sanchez in behind the
back-four and he fires the ball high past Ruthers from an acute angle to
give West Ham the lead. Tiptree respond by replacing the No10 for real this
time. No12 Nelson is his replacement. No11 Illott also goes off, with
Bristol the substitute.

54 min - Before we get the opening goal, which is coming soon (I can feel
it!), I think it right that I mention that the social club here at Chapel
Road is called the 'Jambusters Bar''! Very apt...

52 min - A couple of Tiptree players complain too vociferously about a
throw-in decision that goes against them, earning them a talking to from the
referee. No cards are shown, though.

50 min - Position-wise, Fanimo is now the central striker, with Subuola wide
on the left and Purdy wide on the right. Sanchez is at right-back with
Turgot in midfield alongside Wearen and Moncur.

49 min - Two of the replacements come close in quick succession. First,
Purdy heads wide from close-range, then Fanimo drags his shot wide from 20
yards.

46 min - We're under way again and West Ham have made three changes. Jake
Purdy, Blair Turgot and Mathias Fanimo are all on, with Werndly, Smith and
Hunt the men, or should that be boys, replaced. Sanchez has gone to
right-back.

Ok, to clear up the confusion over the substitution... Tiptree did not make
a change after all. Another player was wearing the No10 shirt on the bench,
but he didn't come on for his counterpart!

49 min - The half-time whistle is blown with the game still goalless. I
expect West Ham will make some changes at the break, but we shall see.

48 min - The neverending first half is ending in exciting fashion. Moncur's
shot is blocked before Werndly sees his low cross flash across the face of
goal.

45 min - Tiptree make a change. The injured English is replaced by another
No10! Very confusing! I will investigate...

44 min - Ruthers covers himself in glory again, racing off his line to save
bravely at the feet of Subuola.

42 min - Lovely football again from West Ham. Werndly and Sanchez combine to
find Smith, whose deep cross looks destined for Subuola's head before being
flicked out for a corner. Moncur delivers the corner kick and a loose
Tiptree header puts Ruthers under pressure, forcing him to punch the ball
clear with both fists from under his own crossbar.

40 min - Hilton will be pleased with the application and attitude of his
youngsters against a much older Tiptree side. They have not been overawed
and have stuck to their principles of passing football. All they need is to
add a goal to what has been an encouraging display so far.

39 min - A loose McNaughton back-pass puts Mehmet under pressure. His
clearance is charged down, but the ball bounces out for a throw-in and the
Hammers recover.

37 min - Another chance for the home side. English finds Underwood in space,
the striker cuts inside Calum McNaughton but his shot is straight at Mehmet.

36 min - A sight of goal for Tiptree No8 Clarke, but his left-foot shot
flies over the crossbar, the club bar and into the car park.

35 min - A headed clearance falls to Sanchez 25 yards from goal, but his
half-volley bounces harmlessly wide.

32 min - It appears there is some speculation over whether George Moncur is
related to former Hammer John. I can confirm that he is the great man's son.
Not only is there a family resemblance, but George is also putting himself
about in the centre of midfleld, just like his Dad used to do a decade ago.

31 min - Underwood is up again and hobbling off. It was his hip it seems.
He's walking a bit gingerly but he won't want to go off. Sure enough, after
a short interlude, he is back in the fray.

30 min - Underwood is still down. It looks like his back is the injured part
of his body. He looks in a bit of pain and might have to be replaced.

28 min - A superb tackle from Lampe denies Tiptree forward Underwood. The
striker felt that challenge and requires treatment from the physio.

26 min - Smith rolls the ball to Sanchez, who is in an unaccustomed wide
right position. Unfortunately, the Spaniard fires a shot harmlessly over the
top when a cross to Werndly on the pback post looked a better option.

24 min - Big chance for Werndly after he latches on to Sanchez's superb
through pass, but the midfielder's touch lets him down and Ruthers is able
to smother.

23 min - Plenty of intricate passing from both teams, but Werndly's early
volley is the closest either side have come to opening the scoring.

20 min - This is a good, even contest so far. A word about the pitch. It is
in immaculate condition and both teams are using the facilities well.
Neither set of defenders are hoofing the ball long. Both are looking to
build from the back, which is making the game easy on the eye.

18 min - We're back under way again and Wearen immediately lets fly from 30
yards. His drive is well-struck but easily held by goalkeeper Ruthers in
front of his face.

17 min - There is a brief pause as Tiptree player Owen receives treatment
for a leg injury. Hammers manager Paul Hilton is using the break to issue
some instructions to his players.

16 min - Lampe does well again to get in the way of a goalbound shot from
Owen.

15 min - Tiptree forward English puts a dangerous cross into the West Ham
penalty area, but Jack Lampe gets back well to hook the ball clear.

14 min - West Ham are starting to take control of the game now. A fluent
passing move spans the width of the pitch, but Miles Smith's cross is too
close to the goalkeeper.

12 min - Jordan Brown goes on a buccaneering run down the left wing,
hurdling two challenges before rolling the ball to Declan Hunt, but his shot
flies over the crossbar from 25 yards.

11 min - Eoin Wearen sends Danny Subuola away down the inside-left channel.
He unleashes a shot, which is blocked. The ball rolls back to the striker,
but again his shot is blocked by a Tiptree defender.

10 min - The good news is that the rain has stopped. It's now a very
pleasant evening in the town made famous by the nearby Wilkins jam factory.

9 min - Both teams are taking advantage of the slick surface by keeping the
ball on the ground. We're nearly ten minutes in, but the game has yet to
settle down fully.

7 min - Deniz Mehmet does well to beat away a shot from Illott, but the
Tiptree attacker was in an offside position.

6 min - West Ham are seeing the majority of the ball early on. The Hammers
are playing a 4-1-4-1 formation with Sergio Sanchez in a holding midfield
role.

3 min - Jack Werndly works home goalkeeper Ruthers with a snap volley that
the stopper does well to beat away.

1 min - We're under way here and the rain has started again at Chapel Road.

Welcome to Chapel Road for tonight's pre-season friendly between West Ham
United's Under-18 side and Essex Senior League outfit Tiptree United.

The weather is a bit changeable here in Essex, but the pre-match rain shower
appears to have ended just in time for kick-off.

George Moncur's 86th-minute equaliser was enough to earn the Hammers a share
of the spoils following an end-to-end encounter at Chapel Road.

A goalless first half featured few goalscoring opportunities, with Jack
Werndly coming closest to hitting the net. However, the midfielder's volley
was turned aside by home goalkeeper Ruthers.

Proceedings livened up considerably after the break on a pleasant evening in
north Essex, and it was no surprise when the opening goal of the night
arrived on 55 minutes.

What was a surprise, however, was the identity of the scorer. Sergio Sanchez
burst forward from right-back before latching on to substitute Mathias
Fanimo's through ball and smashing a rising, angled shot past Ruthers.

Tiptree's response was immediate. Nelson, only sent on as a substitute
following Sanchez's goal, scored within a minute, capitalising on a loose
clearance to slot into the roof of the net from close-range.

The Jam-Makers looked like making toast of the Hammers five minutes later
when Lee Underwood put the home side ahead. The striker showed great
composure to race on to Lee Owen's pass and clip the ball over the advancing
Deniz Mehmet.

West Ham looked to have run out of ideas and could have fallen further
behind, but Underwood's 85th-minute strike cannoned back off the crossbar
with Mehmet well beaten.

However, Hilton's youngsters refused to cave in and were rewarded when
Moncur - the son of former Hammers midfielder John - picked up the ball and
smashed it past substitute goalkeeper Belcher from fully 25 yards.

There was still time for another pair of anxious moments in the West Ham
defence, with replacement stopper Jake Larkins tipping Owen's shot over and
Bristol heading the resulting corner against the far post, but the visitors
held on for a well-earned and thoroughly deserved draw.

Hilton will have been pleased with the application and attitude shown by his
young squad, who stuck to their principles of fluent, passing football on a
beautiful playing surface.

Tiptree, too, deserve credit for their approach and style of play.

The U18s return to action on Saturday morning, when they make the short trip
across London to face their Tottenham Hotspur counterparts. A number of the
players used on Wednesday evening could also be involved in Friday night's
West Ham United XI friendly at Thurrock.

West Ham United have confirmed the capture of Frank Nouble from Chelsea. The
17-year-old striker has signed a five-year deal with the Hammers having
turned down a professional contract with the West London outfit. Nouble,
talking to whufc.com this morning said: "I am really looking forward to
showing what I can do. West Ham are renowned for bringing through young
players and hopefully I can be in the next batch. "This came out of the
blue. The news came out that I rejected at Chelsea and obviously I thank
them for what they have done for me but I am just happy that a club like
West Ham came in for me. They showed their interest and for me it was a case
of saying 'Yes' straight away. I am just happy to be here. "I am reaching
the age where I want to be in and around the first team more than anything -
learning from the big players that have done really well here; Mark Noble,
Carlton Cole and players like that. I want to emulate what they have done."

Meanwhile Hammers CEO Scott Duxbury has moved quickly to quell fears that
West Ham's hunt for new attacking options has ended with the arrival of
Nouble. "I can assure fans we are concentrating on adding more quality to
our attack to complement those we already have," he said. "This is an
extremely busy time of the year and Gianluca Nani and I are working hard to
bring in the players that Gianfranco feels will improve his squad for the
new season."

Chelsea fans on Nouble

"His speed and ability means he can play very effectively as a winger, which
is where he plays the majority of the time. So he has that option as well if
he is looking at breaking into the first team. I want[ed] to see him stay
because the lad is a beast of a player. "Gutted to see him go and I have no
doubt we will see him doing very good things in the future..."
- EskWeston

"West Ham have done to us what we have been doing to them for years. This
kid is a player who has the ability to become a quality Premiership player."
- Badboy

"He is a good young talent but let's face it - there was no way he was going
to get into our first team anytime soon. If we look on the bright side we
now have Sturridge who is miles better, IMO."
- Matterz

"Hopefully he'll have a good season this year with them. Hopefully Zola can
use him ASAP and show Carlo and co that we do have talented youngsters and
to give them a chance in once a while. I hope he has a great season this
year, he's under a great man and a great manager."
- Zansnake

"What a shame, one day that kid is going to be a star."
- Jessman

"Power, pace, finishing. All this and he's only 17/18 years of age. I read
somewhere he covers 100m in 10.5 secs - and he is built like a bull. Can
only imagine how great he would be at 22-23 and further..."

West Ham confirm Nouble deal
Starlet delighted with Hammers switch
Last updated: 22nd July 2009

West Ham have confirmed the signing of Frank Nouble from Premier League
rivals Chelsea. As exclusively revealed by skysports.com earlier this month,
West Ham were lining up a move for the teenager after he rejected the offer
of a professional contract at Chelsea. Nouble has signed a five-year deal at
Upton Park and he is looking forward to joining West Ham. "It is a great day
for me and my family," Nouble told the club's official website. "I am just
excited now to get started at this club. "I am really looking forward to
showing what I can do. West Ham are renowned for bringing through young
players and hopefully I can be in the next batch. "This came out of the
blue. The news came out that I rejected at Chelsea and obviously I thank
them for what they have done for me but I am just happy that a club like
West Ham came in for me. "They showed their interest and for me it was a
case of saying 'Yes' straight away. I am just happy to be here."
West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury was delighted to land the
highly-rated attacker and revealed the club are looking to add more striking
reinforcements to Gianfranco Zola's side. "I am very pleased to be able to
welcome Frank to West Ham where he will have the opportunity to compete for
a place in Gianfranco's first-team squad," noted Duxbury. "He has a very
bright future and we will give him every chance to succeed. This is an
excellent signing for the club. "I can also assure fans we are concentrating
on adding more quality to our attack to complement those we already have.
"This is an extremely busy time of the year and Gianluca Nani and I are
working hard to bring in the players that Gianfranco feels will improve his
squad for the new season."

Eidur Gudjohnsen tempted by move to West Ham from Barcelona
The Mirror
By Darren Lewis 23/07/2009

Eidur Gudjohnsen admits he is thinking over a move to West Ham and the
chance to work alongside Gianfranco Zola once again. Gudjohnsen has been
linked with a move to Upton Park after spending three years playing
alongside the Hammers boss at Chelsea. The Barcelona midfielder may have won
the Champions League, La Liga and the Spanish Cup, but he has failed to
secure a regular first-team place at the Nou Camp. Gudjohnsen, 30, said: "My
future is a little bit uncertain. I can't confirm if I am staying or
leaving. I think it is a matter of time and only time will tell what will
happen. "Whether I move depends on a lot of things, but my decision will be
only sporting, nothing else. I'm not at a stage where I've spoken to any
other club. "I had a great time in England and lived here for eight years so
it comes natural to be back. I had a very successful spell at Chelsea."
West Ham's French winger Julien Faubert is wanted by German giants Schalke
04 - after his surprise loan spell with Real Madrid. Faubert can leave the
Hammers and the Bundesliga outfit want him on loan and then sign him
permanently. He cost £6.1million from Bordeaux in July 2007.

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill set to join Galatasaray, according to reports
By staff writers
July 23, 2009
Foxsports.com.au

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill is reportedly on the verge of turning his back
on the Barclays Premier League to join Turkish club Galatasaray. The
defender is now a free agent after he rejected a new contract with West Ham
United. Neill had reportedly refused to take a pay cut to re-sign with the
Hammers and looked headed away from Upton Park, only for talks to resume
with the hope of the 31-year-old staying at the London club. But reports now
have Neill going to Galatasaray on a free transfer for what would likely be
the last big contract of his career. This time last year, Neill was linked
to Galatasaray when West Ham were considering cutting their wage bill.
"The West Ham thing is off," the Daily Star quoted a source. "It looks like
he's going to Galatasaray."
Neill is reportedly eager to sign for Galatasaray, where he will be reunited
with Australia teammate Harry Kewell. Turksish newspaper Takvim reported a
club board member would travel from Istanbul to London this week to meet
Neill and finalise a deal. But, according to another report, Galatasaray
officials have tired of the month-long negotiations to bring Neill to the
club and have Chelsea defender Juliano Belletti as a back-up plan.
Brazilian Belletti played under Galatasaray coach Frank Rijkaard when the
Dutchman was coach of Barcelona, scoring in the UEFA Champions League win
over Arsenal in 2006. Although Neill would join the Turkish giants on a free
transfer, Galatasaray would have to pay Chelsea up to $8.6 million for
33-year-old Belletti but Rijkaard is keen to reunite with the Brazilian.
Neill spent two season with West Ham, playing 78 league games for the club,
scoring once.

The former Chelsea and Bolton striker Eidur Gudjohnsen has revealed he is
unsure if he will remain a Barcelona player, amid interest from a host of
Premier League clubs including Everton, Sunderland, Aston Villa, and most
notably West Ham. The Icelandic international played his 100th game for the
European Champions last year, but has featured predominantly from the bench
under Josep Guradiola. Speaking from Bisham Abbey where Barcelona are
training ahead of this weekend's Wembley Cup preseason tournament, the
30-year-old was uncertain about where he would be playing next season.
Gudjohnsen said: "I can't confirm whether I'm staying or leaving. I think
it's a matter of time and only time will tell what will happen. My future is
a little bit uncertain," "For the moment I'm a Barcelona player but we all
know in football that everything can change very quickly." "I'm only
thinking about getting myself fit for the new season, whether that be with
Barcelona or another club. We will see." "I look back at my time (in
England) with great memories. It was a wonderful time but whether I will
return to England is not so sure. I think we can only see what the future
holds." "Whether I move depends on a lot of things, but my decision will be
only sporting, nothing else," He added: "I'm not at a stage where I've
spoken to any other club. Maybe in the future I will be able to comment."

Coveted Argentine eager for Premier League chance

Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia is eager to bolster his World Cup chances
with Argentina next year by playing in the Premier League, and the player's
agent has encouraged a host of clubs including Tottenham, West Ham, Everton,
Aston Villa, Sunderland and Blackburn to formally register their alleged
interest in the player.
The 23-year-old midfielder has been regularly watched over the last two
years, and last season he firmly established himself as one of the best
player's in Belgium.
At the beginning of May, the former Independiente starlet put in a
remarkable individual display against Roeselare, capping a brilliant
performance with a wonder goal in front of Premier League representatives
from Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in addition to the
aforementioned clubs.
Having represented Argentina at Under 17 and Under 20 level with the likes
of Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi, the player has been widely tipped to be
included in Diego Maradona's plans for next year's World Cup. His British
agent Barry McIntosh told skysports.com "We know there is interest in Lucas,
and they know that he is keen on moving to England," "Lucas wants to play
for Argentina, and he knows playing in England is a fantastic showcase for
him to display his talents." "He has already shunned offers to move
elsewhere." "He is good friends with Javier Mascherano, having played with
him in all the youth teams and he has seen what a big success he has been in
England." "He would love to play with Javier again at senior level, and we
think that is very achievable."

Biglia has reportedly rejected a move to Deportivo La Coruna and Fenerbahce,
while Lazio and Roma have also shown an interest in the youngster. Having
recently gained an Italian passport he is now free to move anywhere in
Europe, and his agent has seemingly invited interested parties to begin the
bidding.

Faubert in the dark over Hammers future
EastLondonAdvertiser.co.uk
22 July 2009
By JONATHAN CLEGG

West Ham misfit Julien Faubert admits that he has no idea whether he still
has a future at Upton Park despite returning to the club for pre-season
training. Former France international Faubert has struggled to make an
impact since joining the Hammers in a £6.1m move from Bordeaux in August
2007 and was expected to leave the club this summer. The 25-year-old was
shipped out to Real Madrid on loan in January but was unable to secure a
permanent switch to the Bernabeu and he is now back at Upton Park. Yet
despite starting both of West Ham's friendly matches, Faubert admits he is
unsure whether he will still be at the club for the new Premier League
season. He said: "Maybe I will stay, maybe I won't. "I will try to do my
best and we'll see what happens."
Faubert has previously revealed his desire to quit West Ham after
complaining that the club's top brass had no faith in him. Yet the versatile
defender now insists he is willing to remain with the Hammers and challenge
for a first-team berth. "I'm happy to be back at West Ham. Madrid was a good
experience, a big club and the training was very good like it is here,"
Faubert said. "But I am happy to come back to West Ham. Faubert's future at
West Ham could hinge on developments with Lucas Neill, who was this week
reported to be closing on a deal with Turkish giants Galatasaray following a
breakdown in talks with the Hammers. Neill's departure would leave West Ham
with a void at Faubert's preferred position of right-back. And the former
Bordeaux ace is eager to grasp his opportunity during pre-season in a bid to
earn back his place in the starting line-up ahead of the new campaign. "I
am a little bit tired but I am ready to play," Faubert said. "Pre-season is
like this - we have to work and to push the level very high to get ready for
the Premier League."
Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola has previously indicated that Faubert could
remain at Upton Park, despite speculation linking the player with a move to
German outfit Bayer Leverkusen. Yet Zola is adamant that both Faubert and
Calum Davenport, who was loaned to Sunderland in January following reports
of a dressing-room bust-up with the Italian, must prove that they deserve a
second opportunity at the club. "We will see, obviously," Zola said. "We are
building on what we had last year, so if they can fit in our team, they're
welcome."
Faubert has already made a positive impression on the Hammers boss after
shedding more than half a stone during the summer in a bid to improve his
physical condition.
He said: I worked during my holiday and lost some weight so I can run a lot.
"I went to an Italian fitness centre where I lost four and a half kilos.
After I came back I felt good.

Gianfranco Zola says his players are ready for Turkish side Bursaspor on
Wednesday evening
22.07.2009

Gianfranco Zola put his players through a final tough session on Tuesday
evening before the game with Turkish outfit Bursaspor on Wednesday

The West Ham United manager split his squad into two teams for a full
ten-a-side match that Jack Collison, Kieron Dyer and Savio took a full part
in following their individual fitness work on Monday. Their return to
fitness means it is possible they will all feature at the Thermenarena in
Bad Radkersburg alongside Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Carlton Cole and Luis
Boa Morte.

The England trio and Portugal winger were all set to make their first
appearances of the pre-season against Werder Bremen on Saturday before the
game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

"The boys are up for the game" said Zola. "It is an important game. We are
working very hard but playing real games is as important as training. The
match is going to be a good chance to play and some of the players need to
get more than 60 minutes in their legs. We're really looking forward to the
match."

"Against Bursaspor I will try to play the senior players for something like
70 minutes and then on Thursday against [Slovenian side] ND Mura 05 I will
give the players who didn't play very much something more. I think that's
why we've got two games in two days. Most of the players will get 60 or 70
minutes - that is the plan."

Following the frustration of having the Bremen fixture cancelled, Zola feels
his players have responded in the best possible manner - by working twice as
hard on the training pitch.

"It was a pity not to have played the game on Saturday," he said. "We need a
game as the games are the most important. The players reacted very well and
have been training very well. We need to just play and against Bursaspor
there is that possibility."

Bursaspor finished sixth in the Turkcell Super Lig last season and the
Hammers will have to be wary of a host of international players on their
books, who complement several promising youngsters in the squad. Midfielder
Huseyin Cimsir has won 27 caps for Turkey, highly-rated 19-year-old forward
Sercan Yildirim has just won his first cap for Turkey, while South Korea
forward Shin Young-Rok will provide the threat up front.

"Our opponents are a Turkish team and they are supposed to be a good team,"
added Zola. "It is good to have it at our training pitch as we don't want to
travel very much.

"Thursday's game will be a Slovenian team [ND Mura] and they will maybe be
of the quality of the Championship."

Jonathan Spector joined up with the rest of the squad for training after
flying in on Tuesday. The defender was granted extended leave after helping
the United States reach the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup in South
Africa.

It is expected that Spector, along with Mark Noble and James Tomkins, who
both arrived on Sunday, is unlikely to play in either game as he seeks to
catch up on the fitness before flying to China for the Barclays Asia Trophy
on Sunday.

Kick-off in Bad Radkersburg is at 5pm UK time and whufc.com will have live
text updates as well as all of the post-match reaction.

Nouble signs
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola will be able to call on Frank Nouble next season after he
signed a five-year contract
21.07.2009

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of striker Frank
Nouble from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee. With several clubs keen on
securing his services after he turned down a contract at Stamford Bridge
this summer, Nouble said he had no hesitation in deciding to join the
Hammers on a five-year deal. He passed a medical on Tuesday afternoon before
putting pen to paper at the Boleyn Ground. He could make his debut when a
West Ham XI take on Thurrock this Friday evening.

Speaking to whufc.com, he said: "It is a great day for me and my family. I
am just excited now to get started at this club. I am really looking forward
to showing what I can do. West Ham are renowned for bringing through young
players and hopefully I can be in the next batch.

"This came out of the blue. The news came out that I rejected at Chelsea and
obviously I thank them for what they have done for me but I am just happy
that a club like West Ham came in for me. They showed their interest and for
me it was a case of saying 'Yes' straight away. I am just happy to be here."

Nouble added that he had high hopes of impressing the manager and Steve
Clarke, who he had worked with at Chelsea. "I am reaching the age where I
want to be in and around the first team more than anything - learning from
the big players that have done really well here. Mark Noble, Carlton Cole
and players like that. I want to emulate what they have done.

"I am an attacking player. I am tall and rely on my pace and getting goals.
I just want to do well up front and excite the fans."

A former England Under-17 international, the powerful and speedy forward was
Chelsea's leading scorer in the FA Premier Academy League last season,
netting 12 times in 20 appearances, including a hat-trick against Fulham.

Nouble, who had been with Chelsea since the age of eleven, also scored twice
in ten Barclays Premier Reserve League games in 2008/09, while he added a
stunning further strike in the FA Youth Cup victory against Manchester
United at Old Trafford in November.

The striker, who turns 18 in September, ended last season training under
Guus Hiddink alongside the likes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka with
Chelsea's first-team squad.

West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "I am very pleased to be able to
welcome Frank to West Ham where he will have the opportunity to compete for
a place in Gianfranco's first-team squad. He has a very bright future and we
will give him every chance to succeed. This is an excellent signing for the
club. "I can also assure fans we are concentrating on adding more quality to
our attack to complement those we already have. This is an extremely busy
time of the year and Gianluca Nani and I are working hard to bring in the
players that Gianfranco feels will improve his squad for the new season."

Nouble was already well known to Zola and Clarke and not just because of his
Chelsea connection. The forward scored twice against West Ham last season,
notching in Chelsea's 4-3 reserve defeat by the Hammers in December, as well
as the Blues' 4-2 Academy win at Little Heath last October. He scored six
U18 goals in 2007/08, making his debut for Chelsea's reserve team in
November 2007. He became a full-time scholar at Stamford Bridge in June
2008.

Two more join squad
WHUFC.com
England Under-21 duo Mark Noble and James Tomkins got straight into the
swing of things in Austria
21.07.2009

Mark Noble and James Tomkins were training again with their West Ham United
team-mates on Tuesday after flying into Austria later than the rest of the
squad. The pair landed in Graz on Sunday afternoon and drove straight to
join the rest of the squad, who were making the most of their first free
evening by hitting the go-karting track. But after the time-out on Sunday,
it was straight back to work for the pair on Monday as they warmed-up with
the whole squad before joining Kieron Dyer and Georg Grasser for some
specialist fitness work with Alex Dyer. The remaining outfield players split
into two groups, with each one taking it in turn to have their mental and
physical endurance tested with parachute and sledge runs. The former
involves the players doing short sprints with a three-foot wide parachute
attached to their backs, while the second is a similar exercise that
involves pulling a metal sledge behind them instead of the parachute. After
the strenuous fitness work concluded, the groups moved on to some small-area
keep-ball exercises before Gianfranco Zola, Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen took
over for the two main drills of the two-hour session. The first drill
involved a simple one-on-one exercise where the players took it in turns to
try to score past one of the goalkeepers with only one of their team-mates
standing in their way. This threw up some intriguing duels such as Scott
Parker versus Josh Payne, Savio against Julien Faubert, Luis Jimenez against
James Collins and Junior Stanislas against Matthew Upson. Stanislas, Savio
and Anthony Edgar caught the eye while attacking and Payne, Parker and
Ilunga impressed while filling in their defensive roles. The second exercise
involved two goals, two goalkeepers and either a two-on-two or
three-on-three match that relied on speed, skill and teamwork. Goalkeeping
coach Ludo Miklosko enjoyed a rare run-out between the sticks during the
game and did not appear to have lost any of his speed of reaction. After two
hours of gruelling work in the returning summer sunshine, the players set
off on their bikes for the hotel, where they took part in a compulsory
warm-down in the swimming pool. The Hammers trained again on Monday evening
before a double session on Tuesday in preparation for Wednesday's game with
Bursaspor in Bad Radkersburg. whufc.com will have full coverage of the game
with live text updates, while WHUTV will have highlights and reaction after
the game has finished. Kick-off is at 5pm GMT.

Georg Grasser took advantage of a rare break in training to give WHUTV his
own mini-guide to Austria
21.07.2009

West Ham United's Austrian midfielder Georg Grasser took some time out from
his busy pre-season schedule to show the WHUTV cameras around his home
country.

As well as speaking about the local customs, language and even soft drinks,
the 18-year-old midfielder explained how he thinks the rest of his
team-mates have settled in to life in Bad Radkersburg and how the locals
feel about having such a high-profile team in town.

"I would say the other players have adapted quite well really," Grasser, who
was born and raised in nearby Graz, told WHUTV. "They didn't know how to
cope with the heat as it was very hot, but beyond that I think it is very
good.

"I was talking to my friends and they were happy that a team like ours came
to Austria and had a training camp here. It is good for Austria."

Hammers head for Tiptree
WHUFC.com
West Ham United's Under-18s will travel to Essex Senior League side Tiptree
United on Wednesday
21.07.2009

West Ham United's Under-18s will step up their preparations for the upcoming
FA Premier Academy League season with a friendly at Tiptree United on
Wednesday.
Assistant Academy director Paul Hilton will take a squad comprised mainly of
first and second-year scholars to Chapel Road. A number of Academy
schoolboys will also make the trip to Essex. Turkey Under-17 goalkeeper
Deniz Mehmet, central defender Jack Lampe, a summer signing from Harlow
Town, and Republic of Ireland youth international midfielder Eoin Wearen
could also be involved. Hilton said his players were looking forward to
putting all the hard work they have put into their pre-season training to
good use. "The lads have all come back in pretty good shape," said former
West Ham defender Hilton. "Some of them have been involved in training with
the first team and also in the reserve -team friendlies, lads like Eoin,
Conor Okus, Robert Hall and Nick Barrett, which has been good for them. "For
the majority of the younger ones, however, this is their first chance to
play in a match since they returned for pre-season training. "The last two
or three weeks have been quite tough for them so they will enjoy being out
there on the pitch again."
With Academy Director Tony Carr concentrating on Friday's West Ham United XI
reserve team friendly at Blue Square South club Thurrock, Hilton is also
relishing the opportunity to take charge of the side at Tiptree. "I am
looking forward to taking the team myself," he confirmed. "I have known a
lot of the lads since they were Under-15s so it has gone full-circle. It is
good to see how so many of them have progressed and hopefully they will
continue that progress on Wednesday."
Tiptree could provide a stern examination for Hilton's youngsters. The team
finished eighth in the Ridgeons League Premier Division table, having won
the Division One title in 2007/08. Tiptree have moved into the Essex Senior
League for the 2009/10 season. Managed by Colin Wallington, the Jam-Makers
drew 1-1 at Essex and Suffolk Border League outfit Hatfield Peverel in their
most recent pre-season friendly on Saturday. Tickets for Wednesday's
friendly will be priced at £6 for adults and £3 for children. Kick-off is at
7.30pm.

Hammers set to land youngster

West Ham are set to confirm the capture of highly rated teenager Frank
Nouble, according to reports. The Hammers are said to be in prime position
to land the 6'3" powerhouse striker after Nouble turned down a pro contract
with Chelsea, his current club, due to limited opportunities. Both Arsenal
and Manchester United have also been linked with the 17-year-old, who is
unlikely to be considered a first-team option as yet and is instead likely
to team up with Tony Carr and Alex Dyer. Should Nouble complete a switch
from West to East London he would be the second member of Chelsea's staff to
have been lured across town in the last year, following closely behind Steve
Clarke who cost the Hammers around £1.5million in compensation when he left
Stamford Brisge last September.

Handy Andy?

Local press in the North East have claimed that West Ham are looking at
Newcastle youngster Andy Carroll. The Shields Gazette reports that United
are 'considering a move' for the Gateshead-born striker who made his first
team breakthrough at St James Park at the tender age of 16, becoming the
youngest player to represent Newcastle in European competition. Carroll made
his Premier League debut in February 2007 and registered his first senior
goal in a 2-0 friendly win against Juventus later that year. Following an
unhappy loan spell at Preston he returned to Newcastle in January 2008 but
was consigned to the reserves for the remainder of the season. Having seen a
permanent switch to Derby fall through that summer Carroll found himself in
the headlines for the wrong reasons after being arrested - and later
cautioned - for assaulting a woman. Despite scoring on his home league
debut in the 2-2 draw with West Ham at the beginning of 2009 his
hot-headedness was to cause him further problems when he was involved in a
training ground fight with team mate Charles N'Zogbia earlier this year.
Shortly after the incident - which was dismissed by manager Joe Kinnear as
'handbags' - Carroll signed a new three-and-a-half year deal with the

Ham are believed to have offered Nouble a five-year deal to lure the

West Ham United To Beat Arsenal For Chelsea Wonder-Kid Frank Nouble's
Signature
The highly-rated attacker looks set to snub Arsenal in favour of a move to
the East End.

West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola could be set to seal a transfer coup
by beating Arsenal and world-renowned talent nurturer Arsene Wenger to the
signature of up-and-coming teenage forward Frank Nouble. Nouble is currently
on the books of west London outfit Chelsea but has rejected the chance to
sign on professional terms with the Blues. The south Londoner has
represented the Stamford Bridge side since he was 12-years-old and is
beginning to enjoy a growing reputation in youth football.
Nouble is a versatile attacker, and is comfortable playing on the wings or
occupying a central position. Arsenal were believed to be leading the chase
in luring Nouble, 17, away from Chelsea, as the player is alleged to be good
friends with current young gun Jack Wilshere, however, he is believed to
favour the move to the Irons. Nouble has been called-up by England to squads
at Under-17 level.

West Ham are reportedly closing in on a deal for Chelsea's highly rated
youngster Frank Nouble, who is also wanted by Arsenal. Reports this morning
suggest the Chelsea academy starlet, who has allegedly rejected professional
terms from the club and has attracted strong interest from Arsenal, favours
a move to Upton Park as he believes he may be offered a better opportunity
to play first team football. The 17-year-old has featured regularly for
Chelsea's youth team, in addition to some reserve team football outings, and
insiders suggest the midfielder is one the brightest young players to emerge
from the club.

Nouble effort impresses West Ham
The Sun

WEST HAM are looking at Chelsea kid Frank Nouble as backup for striker
Carlton Cole. Nouble, at 6ft 3in, has a similar physical presence to the
England international. The 17-year-old recently stunned Stamford Bridge
officials by turning down their contract offer in the hope of finding first
team football elsewhere. Nouble netted 12 goals in 20 matches for Chelsea's
under-18s last season. He also enjoyed a few run outs for Blues' second
string, grabbing a goal in the 6-0 thumping of Portsmouth in February.
Nouble had been tracked by Arsenal youth team coach Liam Brady for the past
two years and had caught the eye of several Premier League clubs. West Ham
boss Gianfranco Zola is looking to add to his attacking options this summer
and Nouble's abilities are well known to Zola's No2 Steve Clarke. Clarke
left the Chelsea coaching set up last September to become part of Zola's
Upton Park revolution.

Glad to see West Ham take the 'if you cant beat, then join them' approach
Posted by: GUEST BLOGGER , on Tue 21 Jul 2009
West Ham Football Fancast

Football FanCast guest columnist Wayne Peters is glad to see West Ham adopt
the 'if you can't beat them, then join them' approach in obtaining young
players.

Having experienced years of being the butt of the Spuds quips about being a
feeder club and having the media ramming down our throats that the best of
England's talent has slipped from our grasp and witnessing them become an
integral part of Chelsea and United's domestic success, it makes a pleasant
change seeing West Ham start to throw their weight around and look to obtain
the best academy players from our rival sides. Some may see it as poaching,
but the way I see it if you can't beat them, then join them.

Let's be honest other clubs have been doing it for years and why we haven't
needed to as such, given the quality we usually produce, there is nothing
wrong in skimming a bit of cream off the top of our rivals in order to
enhance it. Fortunately for us we as a football club have a great history
and tradition of fast-tracking our youngsters into the first team picture
and no doubt that must appeal greatly. In many ways there must be plenty of
Frank Nouble's out there at rival sides out there who would prefer to sign
pro forms at Upton Park as they would see us a greater chance to progress.

I have to admit I haven't a clue about Nouble's abilities, but the fact
Arsene Wenger was after him also must suggest that he has talent. No doubt
Stevie Clarke has been using his old mates at Chelsea in order to find out
his availability and it seems we are benefitting greatly from it and no
doubt Clarke's presence at West Ham will play a big part in the decision to
swap West London for East.

Good on West Ham and long may it continue I say and hopefully the arrival of
Nouble will be the first of many.

Ex-Chelsea striker Nouble thrilled with West Ham move
22.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United have swooped for Chelsea striker Frank Nouble, signing him
to a five-year contract last night. Speaking to whufc.com, he said: "It is a
great day for me and my family. I am just excited now to get started at this
club. I am really looking forward to showing what I can do. West Ham are
renowned for bringing through young players and hopefully I can be in the
next batch. "This came out of the blue. The news came out that I rejected at
Chelsea and obviously I thank them for what they have done for me but I am
just happy that a club like West Ham came in for me. They showed their
interest and for me it was a case of saying 'Yes' straight away. I am just
happy to be here."
"I am an
attacking player. I am tall and rely on my pace and getting goals. I just
want to do well up front and excite the fans."

War of the tag-teams
KUMB.com
Filed: Monday, 20th July 2009
By: Alex Shilling

The summer months, I find as a football fan, are intolerably boring.

As each season nears its conclusion I tell myself that I'm going to forget
about football and West Ham United for the next three months and concentrate
only on beer, getting a tan, and the ladies. But come early morning on
Monday 25 May, I'm straight onto KUMB.com, checking out Cockney Hammer's
excellent West Ham gossip round up. This pattern has continued every day
since the season ended and when I'm not on the forum, I'm either on the BBC
gossip page or thinking about West Ham. Thus, as a result of many wasted
hours spent thinking about our beloved club, I thought I'd actually do a
useful West Ham-connected something, and analyse the managerial double-teams
we've had over the five years.

In the flashy silver and consistent blue corner - Alan Pardew and Peter
Grant. Always reminded me of a lower-scale Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.
Grant always seemed to be the brains behind Pardew's success - as he got on
with all the players most of the time and they seemed to respect him, which
is more than be said for Pardew. Not quite an exact replica of the
Clough-Taylor partnership, but hopefully you can see where I'm coming from
on this one. For me, it was no coincidence that after the two previous
seasons' success, Grant's departure to Norwich City in the first half of the
season preceded our slide down the table.

In the dreary grey corner - Alan Curbishley and Mervyn Day, aka 'Al 'n'
Merv'. Has there ever been a less inspiring duo in charge of the Hammers?
You'd be pretty pushed to find one. You have to admire them for the miracles
they worked towards the end of 2006/07 season to keep us up in the
Premiership but you also have to take into account that they had at their
disposal a much better squad than any of our relegation rivals thanks to the
Icelandic millions. The two ex-Hammers spent even more the next summer yet
with a squad which was the envy of many teams, failed to build anything
special. It was fitting that the pair's penultimate match was one in which
the side struggled against a frankly rubbish League Two side and were losing
for 80 minutes until the introduction of a player who epitomised Al 'n'
Merv's reign, Carlton Cole.

Thirdly and finally - once in the royal blue but now in a shade of white
which symbolises a blank canvas and all the future promise in the world -
Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke. All we could have hoped for in terms of a
first season; our highest league finish since 2002 - with very limited
resources - attractive football, and young players being brought through and
being given ample opportunities.

Firstly, Alan Pardew and Peter Grant. Pards had been our gaffer for just
under a year when Grant arrived as his assistant. After his failure to get
us promoted the previous season, many people wanted his head. What we got,
however, was not a manager sacked but a reliable, hard-working assistant
manager appointed. Pardew's team immediately appeared more organised, more
determined to grind results out in difficult circumstances - the
early-season wins against promotion rivals, at home to Reading and away to
Sheffield United, were clear examples of these newfound qualities. Coupled
with Pardew's natural exuber... (did I even have to start that word?),
rapport with his players and knowledge of sports science and the game in
general, the Hammers started the season on fire.

And then came the slide. Pards' head is called for yet again, and he looks
more and more depressed after each sh*t result- 0-1 at home to Brighton, 1-4
away to Cardiff, 1-2 at home to Preston - but meanwhile, Peter Grant just
got on with his job, out of sight, behind the scenes. We never heard from
him apart from when we'd just had an outstandingly good/bad result and
Pardew was being touted as the next England manager/next gaffer to be
sacked, and Grant would make a straightforward comment, but one that was
always perfectly apt.

At the end of the season we were promoted via the play-offs, and the duo
followed the team into the Premiership. We heard even less from Grant that
first season - he was never pictured on the touchline like some Premiership
assistant managers; Sammy Lee, once of Bolton, seemed to be on the box almost
as much as Sam Allardyce, the then Bolton Wanderers manager, was.
Practically the only thing we heard from Grant in 2005/2006 was an
admission, after a mid-season break to Dubai which proved to be disastrous,
that the break was, in hindsight, a bad idea.
I always got the feeling with Grant that he was not only performing the
function of steering wheel with the players, but also with a young,
talented, and at times overtly excitable manager in Pardew. In my view, much
of the success of 2005/2006 was down to him and I belivee that he is one of
the - if not the - most effective assistant managers that West Ham United
have ever had.

Secondly, Alan Curbishley and Mervyn Day. Fair play to them, they kept us up
and they also guided us to a top half finish the following season. But at
what cost? Almost £20 million of Icelandic money was spent in January 2007
in an attempt to salvage something from a truly disastrous season. Money was
clearly needed, as only two of Curbishley and Day's first fourteen matches
in charge were won. It was reported in some quarters of the press that
Curbishley simply did not have the respect of the players. What little
respect the 'Baby Bentley' crew - as Curbishley characteristically bluntly
dubbed them - had for Pardew was not transferred to Curbishley. It was
reported in the media and reported in Brian Belton's book 'Brown Out' that
elder statesman Teddy Sheringham was 'badmouthing his manager' in the
canteen one day, and when Curbishley appeared, the player simply walked off
without a word.

Sheringham said later, 'I don't see what car you drive has to do with
performance on the pitch.' Quite.

Curbishley was clearly trying to shake things up at West Ham, but he went
about it in an irredeemably crass and stupid fashion. As for Day - well,
whereas Grant assumed a background role and left Pardew to deal with the
primadonnas and enigmas of his dressing room whilst working hard behind the
scenes and earning a quiet respect from Hammers fans, 'Merv' was simply
nowhere to be seen - save for the occasions when he would leap off the bench
at random intervals to wave his arms about and shout instructions which I
doubt made any more sense to the players on the pitch than it did to the
fans in the stands. My own impression of him was that he was simply a boring
old fart and thus the perfect right-hand man for Curbishley. I remember at
the open training day (yes, I still go to those and yes, I know I can no
longer get away with going to them on my own without being derided as a
saddo with no life) where for some reason, I decided to collect 'Merv's'
autograph.

With difficulty, our keeper in the '75 Cup Final scribbled his signature on
my replica shirt with a cheap plastic pen usually used for filling in order
forms for shirt printing that I'd swiped from the shop upon discovering that
my black marker pen had run out. One 'cheers, Merv' later and the grim
deadpan expression upon his droopy features still remained. He then went on
to lecture the poor bloke next in line on the benefits of the traditional
black marker pen as opposed to the new-fangled new biros - '..them other
ones don't work.'

Petty jibes aside, full credit to the two of them - they kept us up.

However, I felt at the time that quite a few of our players were playing
primarily for themselves and not for the manager - and not just ones like
Reo-Coker who were merely trying to put themselves in the shop window having
grown weary of life at West Ham. If you believe Paul Konchesky, Curbishley
was hated by a sizeable proprortion of the squad. Curbishley's old nemesis
from his Charlton days, 'Konch', claimed shortly after being sold to Fulham
for £2million that 'there are a lot of unhappy players in that dressing room
who don't like him.' Curbishley retaliated by accusing the England defender
of 'having no class.' However, 'Curbites' would point to the aftermath of
Carlos Tevez's first goal in the 3-1 defeat of Bolton Wanderers in May 2007,
where Tevez ran to his manager and embraced him and was followed by Mark
Noble and James Collins.

Nevertheless, I would say that these three players all owed a debt of
gratitude to Curbishley for being given a chance in the first team. It was
noticeable that no other players joined the rush to embrace Curbishley. The
point I am really dragging out here is that in my view at least, Curbishley
alienates players. The following season there were rumours of a dressing
room bust-up between the manager and record signing Craig Bellamy after the
2-0 opening day defeat to Manchester City. This was no vague tabloid claim
either - the papers were very specific about the circumstances. The argument
had sourced from the manager's decison to play winger Matthew Etherington at
left back for the second half with City leading 1-0 after the first period.

By the end of that season, through negative tactics and what were seen as
poor results, Alan Curbishley had turned the majority of the fans against
him. The three consecutive 4-0 defeats against Chelsea, Liverpool and
Tottenham had contributed much to this. However, the base of Curbishley
haters had built up long before - but earlier the situation was a 50-50 one,
split between those who supported Curbishley and those who didn't. This was
particularly noticeable at the Fulham away game in February where minutes
before Nobby Solano's winning goal, the Curbishley haters (and I counted
myself amongst them) had been chanting 'too f*cking negative' after the
manager made yet another defensive substitution. Minutes later, the bloke
next to me, and a notable few others began chanting ironically 'too f*cking
positive' as an angry riposte to those who didn't support 'Curbs.'

However, as with many things concerning the Curbishley-Day partnership, the
negatives drowned out the positives. Somehow, it seemed fitting that the
pairing's last two matches in charge of us were a stark contrast in
comparison to each other - both 4-1 wins, but one a glorious performance
against a major rival for a top half Premier League finish; the other a
scraped victory against a poor League Two team.

Curbishley and Day were never the right management team for West Ham United.
I just never really felt that they understood the club and its traditions
and history - and I never could comprehend why two West Ham old boys
couldn't understand what the West Ham fans expected in terms of football and
respect of the traditions of the club, having spent so much of their playing
career at the club. However, the manner in which they were treated by the
board in the summer of 2008 was completely below the belt and I'm sure that
I wasn't the only fan to feel sorry for Curbishley and Day last summer over
the way Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney were sold above their heads.

Finally, Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke. Despite my disgust at the way the
board treated Curbishley and Day I felt an overwhelming sense of relief when
Zola and Clarke were appointed. 'Now we'll see something,' thought I. Things
were on the up, despite the fact that we'd just lost our shirt sponsor and
so our players were running round with little nylon patches on their shirts;
despite the fact that we'd lost half our defence and whether we'd replaced
them was doubtful; and despite the fact that our fans, upon arriving at The
Hawthorns for Zola's first game as our manager (albeit in the stands while
Kevin Keen took charge) were greeted with many choruses of 'Zola is a
Chelsea fan' from the West Brom fans - despite all this, I believed it and
so do thousands of others, that the Hammers were on the up. Not even losing
3-2 to a newly-promoted team and getting mugged off £7 for a Wimpey burger
and chips at services at Watford Gap could dampen my enthusiasm for the
little Italian and the substantially larger Scotsman as our new management
team.

The early signs looked promising in the pair's first game, against
Newcastle. I had been sceptical when two necessary strikers had been signed
in aging David Di Michele and Diego Tristan, but after half an hour of Di
Michele's debut, I was screaming to any of my fellow occupants of the
Centenary Lower who would listen that the Italian was the new Di Canio. In
hindsight, this was an over-the-top reaction as exactly half of Di Michele's
goal haul for the entire season was attained inside his first 30 minutes in
a West Ham shirt, but such was my excitement at the GFZ-Clarke reign being
underway that I quite forgot my natural pessimistic self. Even though
Michael Owen got his traditional goal against West Ham, my optimism wavered
none. Oddly, I didn't even notice the fact that we failed to win any of the
following seven games until someone pointed it out on the KUMB.com forum.

As far as I was concerned, the side was playing good football under the new
management and that was all that mattered. I was thrilled that, in the
middle of this run, Zola had the balls to play three up front against
Arsenal. Yes, we lost, but not without a fight. I could see something
special in that team, something which was previously unseen in either
Curbishley or Pardew's regimes. As I began this article both these men were
out of work, although Pardew has since been unveiled as the new manager of
League One Southampton.

On the subject of Steve Clarke, many supporters had been as delighted by the
Scotsman's appointment as assistant manager as they had been by Zola's
appointment as manager. He brought with him an excellent reputation from
Chelsea and the Hammers had had to pay a substantial compensation packet to
Chelsea, such was their reluctance to lose him. Clarke very much took the
role that Peter Grant had taken during his time at the club. He was slightly
more in the limelight than Grant was, being more high-profile because of the
Chelsea connections, but had the exactly the same characteristics and
operated in the same manner. You could see right away that he had the total
respect of the players and that they would do anything that him and
Gianfranco asked of them.

Soon enough, we were out of the rut and were mounting a serious challenge
for Europe. Things got even better; Gianfranco acquired his own song, which
unlike the categorically failed 'Alan Curbishley's Claret and Blue Army' was
now being sung with heart-warming regularity. In fact he had two songs - the
claret and blue army song with Gianfranco (later Franco Zola) being the word
inserted before the main body of the tune. In addition, the little Italian
also had his more personal soundtrack to the tune of that god-awful DJ Otzi
'Hey Baby' tune that the likes of Bolton and Wigan base their entire musical
repetoire on - 'Giiiiaaanfrancoo Zola, he's only five foot three, Gianfranco
Zola, he comes from Eetarrlee, he ain't Chelsea no more.'

This was invariably followed up by 'stick yer blue flag up yer arse' or, to
the same tune, 'from Stamford Bridge to Upton Park, we nicked yer Zola and
yer Clarke.'

The club, whose supporters feared relegation at the start of the season now,
due to the vagaries of the European qualification system and the situation
of Man United winning the League Cup and two European-qualified sides,
Everton and Chelsea, contesting the FA Cup Final. In the midst of all this
excitement, a snag had appeared. In the event of us qualifying for Europe,
Zola would not be allowed to manage us in the UEFA Cup (or Europa League as
it went on to be known) as he did not have the necessary coaching licence.
In the event, however, more than a few supporters seemed less than
distraught at the possibility of Steve Clarke being the man on the touchline
for only the club's second European campaign in ten years.

In the event, a series of injuries, bad luck, bad results, and the revival
of Spurs culminated in the Hammers finishing ninth and failing to qualify
for Europe, but 'UEFA Pro-Licencegate' was a telling episode. If for any
reason Gianfranco should leave the club, I think that the club should look
no further for a replacement than the man sitting a few inches along from
him in the dug-out. Because this current managerial 'tag-team' in our dugout
right now gives me greater cause for optimism than any other I can remember
in all the time in which I have been supporting the club. We have two men on
our bench who want us to play attacking football, who want to bring young
players through, and along with Scott Duxbury, have a vision for the club.
It's an ambiguous word I know, but a vision is all it is at the moment.
While Manchester City are committing potential suicide by splashing billions
on players well into their twenties who will likely go on to provide nothing
like long-term value, we're going steady with The Project. Nothing more,
nothing less.

Vive The Project, vive The Academy, vive attacking football, and vive Frank
'n' Steve!

West Ham have handed teenage winger Daniel Kearns a one-year contract.
Belfast-born Kearns signed his new deal at the weekend, and will battle for
a place in Alex Dyer's reserve side next season along with the latest batch
of graduate graduates. The 17-year-old, who is entering his third year with
the club having initially joined as a 15-year-old told whufc.com: "I'm
absolutely delighted. I actually found out just before the end of last
season. I had a meeting with Tony Carr and he was saying that he was going
to offer me a professional contact. Now I've got it done I'm happy it's out
of the way and I want to get cracking on with the season. "The main aim for
this season is to get another contract at the end of it. I'm hoping to get a
regular spot in the reserves and maybe try to go out on loan during the
season and from there, I hope to push on and get into the first team. You
never know what's going to happen. "Hopefully I'll be involved in the
[Irish] Under-19s this year and maybe I could push on into the Under-21
squad as well. We'll see what happens."

Brooking's last stand

The Boleyn Ground North Bank will be renamed the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand
from the beginning of next season. The stand - which has been known as the
Centenary Stand since the mid 1990s - will be renamed and revamped in time
for the start of the 2009/10 campaign in honour of the Hammers and England
legend. Brooking - who also has a street in Newham named after him - told
whufc.com: "It is obviously a terrific honour which I am very grateful for
because this is my club. It will be my club forever. The great thing was
being able to spend my whole career with West Ham, having a stint as
caretaker manager and as a director and then going to the FA. "I still try
and get to most of the home games. On my travels, if I am in a cab or
something then everyone talks to me about West Ham because they know I am
associated with the club. It is something I am only too pleased about
whenever it happens. We have a very passionate and loyal support."
The North Bank becomes the second stand to be named after a former Hammers
legend following the rebranding of the South Bank as the Bobby Moore Stand
at the end of the last century. Additionally, it was recently revealed by
Scott Duxbury in his interview with KUMB.com that the club's entrance gates
will be renamed after John Lyall.
Duxbury, confirming the news this morning added: "I know how much he
[Trevor] means to everyone connected with West Ham United and I look forward
to us being able to show our appreciation when we play Napoli next month for
the Bobby Moore Cup. "We are determined to pay tribute to those that have
helped make this club what it is today. He is not just one of our greatest
ever players but also one of the country's best - and he continues to give
so much back to the game in England."

Quashie would consider loan move
BBC.co.uk

West Ham midfielder Nigel Quashie would agree to another loan move if he
cannot force his way into manager Gianfranco Zola's first-team plans. The
31-year-old spent time at Birmingham and Wolves last season as he recovered
from a long-term injury. He told BBC London 94.9: "I've got to do what's
right for me, and for me it's to want to play. If it means me going out on
loan again, that's fine. "Everything they've asked me to do I think I've
done." He added: "They have asked me if I would like to stay behind and get
myself fit for a possible loan move, and I've made it clear that's probably
the best option for me."
Quashie has not pulled on a West Ham shirt since the 4-3 home defeat by
Tottenham in March 2007. His contribution for Birmingham and Wolves last
season helped both sides' win promotion to the Premier League. But neither
club have made an offer to take Quashie on a permanent basis, even though he
says he enjoyed both spells. "It was brilliant, because to come back to West
Ham it would have been difficult to get into the first team with so many new
players," he admitted. "So it was good for me, and last year was about
getting fit because I was out for 16 months. "I've come back, the manager
said he would be happy for me to come back and get fit. "He said he was
taking the team to Austria and asked me what I wanted to do, he's got nine
midfielders and I said 'for me, I just want to play'. "I've played for 13
years now."
While West Ham's players were left frustrated in Austria when their friendly
against German side Werder Bremen was called off due to torrential rain,
Quashie played in a youthful side who drew 1-1 with Cambridge United.
Despite seemingly being out of the picture at Upton Park, Quashie has only
good things to say about his employers. "The manager has been first class -
he said he would do everything he can for me," added Quashie. "Last year was
a difficult year. In December my mum passed away and it was difficult for me
and my mum's partner - for me to be close to my family in Birmingham - it
was a tough, tough time. "I just wanted to be close to people at that stage,
and I had a tough year with injury. "But now I'm back fit and focused on
wanting to play and there are a few things in the pipeline. "Hopefully, if I
play well in pre-season the manager will be informed of my form and my
attitude. "At the end of the day, I've had a good career and I've enjoyed my
time playing, I'm 31 now and I've enjoyed my football. "Whether I stay in
the Premier League or join another Championship club it's just about
enjoying football now because being out for 16 months is not good for
anybody really."

West Ham are poised to sign Chelsea youngster Frank Nouble, skysports.com
understands. The Hammers have moved for Nouble after the 17-year-old
rejected the offer of a professional contract at Stamford Bridge. Nouble is
rated one of the best teenage talents in England having impressed for
Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup and in the reserves. Chelsea were keen to tie
down Nouble to a long-term deal, but the young striker has decided to move
on as he fears his first-team chances would have been limited at Stamford
Bridge. Arsenal were credited with an interest in Nouble, but West Ham have
managed to lure the powerful frontman to Upton Park. Nouble's signing will
come as a massive coup to Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola as he is tipped for a
big future in the game.

Daniel Kearns intends to be the next starlet off the West Ham United
production line after signing a pro contract at Upton Park. The 17-year-old
has earned a one-year deal and hopes to prove he is worth a prolonged stay
by forcing his way into Gianfranco Zola's first team. Winger Kearns joins
Matt Fry, Tony Brookes, Oliver Lee and Anthony Edgar in progressing from the
academy, with each hoping to follow the example of the likes of Mark Noble
by muscling in among the big boys. 'I'm absolutely delighted to have
signed,' he said. 'All the other boys signed their contracts while I was
still away so I'm pleased to have got it done and dusted. 'The main aim for
the season is to get another contract at the end of it. I'm hoping to get a
regular spot in the reserves and maybe try and go out on loan during the
season. And from there, I hope to push on and get into the first team. You
never know what's going to happen.'
Meanwhile, 25-year-old winger Julien Faubert, who spent half of last season
putting his feet up on the Real Madrid bench, admits his future at the club
remains undecided

Green to new contracts. The Sunday Mirror says Upson has spoken of his

join a top four club. Both Manchester City and Aston Villa are interested,
while West Ham are hoping to open contract negotiations in the next few

new deal with Upson, while the club are also looking to extend Robert
Green's stay in east London.

An Asian group are eyeing takeover talks for West Ham United. The Sunday
Mirror says Pairoj Piempongsant, the Thai businessman who brokered two
takeovers at Manchester City and was involved in the projected acquisition
of Portsmouth, is playing a pivotal role in negotiations. At the moment the
two parties are miles apart in their valuation with the group offering
£75million and West Ham wanting closer to £125m. The consortium, whose
investors are predominately from Thailand, are bound to raise alarm bells at
the Premier League after claims that Thaksin Shinawatra, the controversial
former Thai prime minister, is looking to invest in another Premier League
club.

Cologne move for West Ham's Faubert

Cologne are chasing West Ham United midfielder Julien Faubert. The Daily
Star says Faubert is top of Cologne's wanted list. The French star, 25, who
cost the Hammers £6m from Bordeaux in 2007, was loaned out to Real Madrid
last season after a ruptured Achilles tendon wrecked his chances of shining
at Upton Park. Cologne want to snap him up but will struggle to match his
£1m-a-year salary.

West Ham chief Carr delighted with Quashie, Davenport commitment
21.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United academy boss Tony Carr praised the attitude of senior pair
Nigel Quashie and Calum Davenport after their 1-1 draw with Cambridge.
"Nigel Quashie played very well in midfield and Calum Davenport held the
defence together at the back," Carr told whufc.com. "If you're going to have
a proper reserve team with very young players - we had Robert Hall coming on
for another 15 minutes and he is just a schoolboy - they need the experience
of older players to help them develop. "It doesn't happen too often these
days but Nigel and Calum should be given great credit for their attitude.
Overall, it was a good work-out for 20 players to have."

Hammers game halted by rain

Guardian Series
By Jonathan Moyes »

GIANFRANCO Zola has apologised to West Ham United fans after their friendly
against Werder Bremen in Austria was cancelled because of a waterlogged
pitch. West Ham were due to take on the German Cup winners on Saturday after
their 1-1 draw against Austrian outfit Flavia Solva. But persistent rain
made the pitch unplayable and a decision was taken to cancel the game hours
before kick-off. Hammers boss, Zola, said: "I was very sorry for our
supporters. I know that many came to see us and it is a shame that we could
not play the match for them, as they had made all that effort to watch us.
"I would like to thank them still for coming over and just say sorry that
the match could not happen. We were also disappointed, because we were up
against a good side, it would have been a good test for us. "We wanted to
play, they wanted to play but the conditions stopped us."
The game may have not gone ahead but it did not mean West Ham's players put
their feet up because Zola arranged an impromptu training session.

West Ham United look set to snap up Roma midfielder Simone Bezziccheri after
the 16-year-old completed a successful pre-season outing for the East London
side. The move for the Italian youngster continues the Hammers' close ties
with the country following Gianfranco Zola's arrival last year. The move for
the Roman born youngster also echoes the move made by Manchester United for
Lazio starlet Federico Macheda, who shot to prominence last term with
decisive goals against Aston Villa and Sunderland. The West Ham United
senior squad is currently in Austria but Bezziccheri was part of a youthful
Hammers side that drew 1-1 with Cambridge United over the weekend. Academy
director Tony Carr took charge of the team and played Bezziccheri for the
full 90 minutes.

Carr: "Well Contested Game"

West Ham Academy Director Tony Carr was pleased with the 1-1 draw at the R
Costings Abbey Stadium on Saturday and felt both sides will benefit from the
match. "I thought it was a well contested game," he said. "Both teams gave
their all and I thought we had to defend very well. "Obviously with Calum
Davenport giving that little bit of experience at the back and Nigel Quashie
in midfield gave us that little bit extra to contain Cambridge, who pushed
us all the way and fully deserved their equalizer at the end. "Having the
keeper playing outfield and coming in on our keeper like a Sherman Tank
caused our keeper to flap at the ball and the lad (Rory McAuley) was well
placed to knock it in. Our lad will learn from that and I know we will take
a lot out of this game and I hope Cambridge will as well."
