City take the the points - WHUFC
Alan Curbishley's men could not follow up their opening-day win on a
frustrating afternoon in Manchester
24.08.2008

Manchester City 3-0 West Ham United

Ten-man West Ham United were beaten in their first away game of the new
season after Manchester City took advantage of Mark Noble's dismissal to
claim all three points on Sunday.

Daniel Sturridge hit the opener in the 64th minute against a visiting
defence that had stood firm until that point before Elano then added two
more on 71 and 77 minutes. Alan Curbishley's plans had been hampered by the
enforced substitution of Carlton Cole on the half-hour mark and the sending
off of Noble after two yellow cards - one for handball, the other for a
challenge on Michael Johnson - in the 33rd and 39th minutes.

Curbishley had begun with the luxury of an unchanged 18 from the opening-day
win against Wigan Athletic last week with Dean Ashton and Scott Parker fit
after coming off in that 2-1 win. Manchester City's new manager Mark Hughes
handed a debut in midfield to Vincent Kompany in place of Gelson Fernandes.
Michael Ball replaced Javier Garrido at left-back, Stephen Ireland stepped
in to replace Kelvin Etuhu and Sturridge was the fourth change ahead of Ched
Evans up front.

City enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges with 18-year-old Sturridge
- who was in because summer signing Jo was not yet back from Olympics duty
while Valeri Bojinov and Darius Vassell remain injured - threatening to get
in behind. On five minutes, Elano surged forward into the box but was dealt
with by Calum Davenport.

At the other end, Cole was the most lively but City, who lost 4-2 at Aston
Villa last week, were edging it. That was underlined in the 13th minute when
Ireland shot for goal only to see Davenport head off the line. The clearance
went straight to Vedran Corluka and his snap-shot seemed in until Davenport
again got in the way, deflecting the ball up and on to the crossbar before
Scott Parker could lash it to safety.

City thought the deadlock had finally been broken on 22 minutes when Martin
Petrov sent a 25-yard free-kick up and over the wall. Robert Green could
only watch as the ball smacked against the post and away from harm. Petrov
was a menace and his surge down the left a minute later brought a caution
for Valon Behrami. The home side then saw Sturridge twist before flashing a
right-foot shot wide from ten yards.

The hard-working Cole then made way for Freddie Sears, having taken a knock
seemingly to his left thigh in an earlier challenge. The defensive task
became even more difficult when Noble got his marching orders after two
quickfire yellow cards. As a sign of things to come, there was still time
for Johnson to let fly in added time but Green flung himself to his right to
save.

Half-time saw Sears sacrificed for the midfield play of Hayden Mullins and
it was barely eight minutes before City had to make their first change, with
Micah Richards carried off to be replaced by Dietmar Hamann following a
nasty collision with Tal Ben Haim. Kompany dropped back into defence and
City still looked to probe further forward - Elano prodding one into Green's
grasp as the hour approached.

A great move on 63 minutes finished with Faubert sliding one teasingly into
the penalty area for Ashton only for Kompany to snuff out the danger. That
followed some better passing play by the visitors but it was City who broke
the deadlock a minute later though when Sturridge lashed in an unstoppable
shot past Green after Upson's clearance went straight to him ten yards out.

Faubert and Etherington could have levelled almost immediately but got in
each other's way as they burst through and the chance was gone. Curbishley's
side were soon two down when Elano kept his composure from similar range to
the opening goal after Ireland had hooked the ball back into the centre. The
final away change then saw Luis Boa Morte on for Etherington but City had
the ball in the net again just after as Elano slotted in his second after
another Ireland break on the right.

City promptly swapped Etuhu and Evans for Elano and Petrov, knowing the
victory was secured. As Faubert fizzed one in that was just deflected wide
in the closing stages and the fourth official displayed ten minutes of added
time - after the earlier Richards injury - the travelling support kept on
singing Bubbles. Ashton tried his luck with a late free-kick but there was
to be no consolation for the long journey back to London.

Man City 3-0 West Ham - BBC
By Chris Bevan

Manchester City eased to their first Premier League victory of the season
against 10-man West Ham. City hit the woodwork twice through Tal Ben-Haim's
deflected shot and Martin Petrov's free-kick before West Ham had Mark Noble
sent off for two bookings. The visitors were under the cosh but held out
until Daniel Sturridge rifled into the roof of the net on 65 minutes.
Stephen Ireland crossed for Elano to smash in a second before setting up the
Brazilian to volley home City's third. The result was a welcome lift for
City manager Mark Hughes, who had a difficult summer off the pitch at
Eastlands then saw his side collapse at Aston Villa last weekend. More goals
will be the order of the day when City travel to Denmark on Thursday to
attempt to make up a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their Uefa Cup
qualifying tie with FC Midtjylland. But Hughes's men will approach that game
with added confidence after completely dominating the Hammers. In front of
their owner Thaksin Shinawatra, who was watching his first game since being
hit by charges of charges of corruption and abuse of power in his native
Thailand, City began brightly.
West Ham, who would have gone top of the embryonic table had they won, also
knocked the ball about nicely in the opening stages. But, while they failed
to test home goalkeeper Joe Hart, City were soon creating chances. Their
first near-miss came in an almighty goalmouth scramble when Ireland's shot
was headed off the line by Callum Davenport, who recovered to deflect
Ben-Haim's follow-up shot on to the crossbar. Petrov was the next City
player to hit the woodwork, curling a beautiful 30-yard free-kick on to the
outside of the post with Robert Green stationary. By now, West Ham were
being forced to defend in numbers but their cause was not helped by Noble's
needless dismissal on 38 minutes. The England under-21 midfielder's first
yellow card, for a handball after he slipped, was foolish and he gave
referee Howard Webb no choice but to send him off when he lunged in on
Michael Johnson soon afterwards.
It could have got worse for the Hammers before half-time but Webb ignored
City's claims for a penalty despite a clear handball by Lucas Neill at a
corner.
And Green had to make a stunning save to keep the scores level, pushing
Johnson's shot around the post after Ben-Haim had advanced unchallenged to
the edge of the area. The second half began with a seven-minute delay while
Micah Richards received treatment after a clash of heads with Ben-Haim, and
the defender was taken to hospital with concussion. But, when the game
resumed, it was still City who were well on top. It still took them a while
to find the net, however, but when they did it was with a thumping finish.
Matthew Upson only cleared Petrov's cross as far as Sturridge, who took a
touch before burying the ball past Green. The goal brought relief for Hughes
but it was almost short-lived as West Ham launched a swift attack from the
restart.
Sadly for the visitors, Matthew Etherington and Julien Faubert got in each
others way after running clear and the chance was gone. And City were soon
out of sight - Vedran Corluka and Ireland combining down the right to tee up
Elano on 70 minutes before the same trio linked up to add a third goal seven
minutes later. Both teams ended up with just 10 men on the pitch, as City
substitute Kelvin Etuhu limped off soon after becoming his side's third
replacement of the game. But, despite a mammoth 10 minutes of added time,
West Ham could still not muster a shot on target on a miserable afternoon
for Alan Curbishley's men. Curbishley, who could see defender Anton
Ferdinand sold to Sunderland next week, lost Carlton Cole to injury after
just 31 minutes and the striker becomes the latest name on a lengthy injury
list at Upton Park.

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes:"There have been a lot of negative things
said about the club in the past week and it was nice to get back to
football.
"The response from my players was excellent - right from the start they had
the right attitude and tempo. "Irrespective of West Ham having a man sent
off, I felt we would have won."

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley:"I am desperately disappointed for our fans.
We started quite well but, as the game wore on, City got on top. "We could
not cope with it and when Mark Noble was sent off, it became very, very
difficult for us. "With 10 men, everything has got to go for you and you
have to defend properly and we didn't for their first goal."

West Ham accept Ferdinand offer - BBC

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley says the club have accepted a bid from
Sunderland for Anton Ferdinand. The 23-year-old defender is mulling over
Sunderland's offer, with the transfer fee reportedly as much as £8m.
Curbishley told BBC Radio 5 Live: "The board have accepted the bid - he's
not renegotiated his contract - and the decision was taken out of my hands.
"I don't know where Anton is in terms of signing for Sunderland but once the
club accept the bid it moves on."
Ferdinand, the younger brother of Manchester United star Rio, signed a
three-year contract extension in July 2005 and his current deal is due to
expire in 2010. Already without a number of injured defenders - Danny
Gabbidon, James Collins, James Tomkins, George McCartney and Jonathan
Spector - Curbishley is hoping to sign a defender before the transfer window
closes at the end of the month. "We are thin on the ground," said
Curbishley. "If we lose another defender we will have to react to that."

We're a little bit thin ... - KUMB

Alan Curbishley responds to the desperately disappointing defeat at
Manchester City ...

The fans that turned up I'm desperately disappointed for. The first ten
minutes we were in it; I think we started quite brightly and got some balls
into our front two in dangerous areas - but nothing came of it. As the game
wore on after that Man City got on top and we couldn't cope with it. The
sending off just added to it.

I was hoping to get to half time with the way we were playing and perhaps
try and do something, chang it around and make some substitutions. But the
sending off happened and it was very, very difficult. We wasn't set up to
play with ten men, that's for sure.

The hand ball, I thought that Mark slipped over and he thought that the
player was going to get away so he dragged the ball back. The challenge I
couldn't quite see; I know he's he's lunged a bit and he's left the ground
and caught the player's ankle. On another day, without the hand ball he'd
have still been on the pitch and we'd have got away with it. But, bad day.

With ten men everything's got to go for you and you've got to defend
properly but I think the first one was the vital one. It was a poor
clearance and it fell straight to one of their players who took it really
well. After that, the personnel we had out there looked as if we weren't
going to score.

We're fed up talking about the injuries but it's a contributing factor -
we've got players out that would make a difference and would make the squad
stronger. But we've just got to get on with it. I've asked for the player's
observations - after a game like that the manager normally talks most of the
time - but I've asked them for something and they've basically said it's
down to them. They've played poorly, not one of them can really look at it
and say I've performed to my ability. We've got to push on to Wednesday
first and change it around.

Sunderland are interested in Anton Ferdinand. He's been trying to get fit
for the last week but I don't know how far it's gone - we'll have to see
tomorrow when we get back to Upton Park but yes, they have been sniffing
around him for the last couple of weeks. If the club accepts the bid then
we'll see what happens.

We're a little bit thin on the ground as you can see. We've got injuries to
Collins, Tomkins, Gabbidon and Jon Spector at the moment, people that can
play in that area. So we're a little bit thin. If the board have decided to
accept the bid we move on and take it from there.

When you're a manager, you manage what you've got. I'm confident - when I
get the people fit - that we've got enough people in the right positions,
we've got cover. But at the moment we haven't. If they're not fit by the
start of the international break I'm sure one or two of them will be back.
Not just the defenders but Craig Bellamy and people like that who we were
hoping were going to start the season.

Man City have taken three injuries today on top of the injuries they had
when they came into the game. We coped last year and we've got to try and
cope this year.

Curbishley: blame the board - KUMB
Filed: Sunday, 24th August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Alan Curbishley has revealed that the decision to accept an offer from
Sunderland for Anton Ferdinand was 'out of my hands'.

Only Friday Curbishley told how the 24-year-old defender was still 'part of
his plans', despite it being widely reported than an £8million bid from
Sunderland had already been accepted.

But following United's 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester CIty this
afternoon Curbishley admitted that an £8million bid had been accepted -
although he made it absolutely clear that the decision had nothing to do
with him.

"The board have accepted the bid - he's not renegotiated his contract - and
the decision was taken out of my hands," Curbishley told Radio Five Live.

"I don't know where Anton is in terms of signing for Sunderland but once the
club accept the bid it moves on."

Curbishley's comments once again hint at a major rift between him and the
board - as did his comment last week when, following the win over Wigan he
told the BBC that 'it still won't be enough for some people' - a comment
thought to have been directed at the club's board of directors.

And having already been embarrassed over the Freddie Ljungberg sale
questions must be raised as to the manager's future, with players now
apparently being sold without his knowledge by those at the club more
interested in finances than results on the field.

Hammers board accept Sunderland's Ferdinand offer
Last updated: 25th August 2008

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley has confirmed Sunderland's bid for Anton
Ferdinand has been accepted by the club's board. Ferdinand, who was absent
from West Ham's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, is currently on the
sidelines recovering from a hamstring injury. Black Cats boss Roy Keane
stated he was close to adding two new players to his squad in the next week,
one of them is believed to be West Ham stopper Ferdinand.
Curbishley has now stated that with Ferdinand reluctant to renegotiate terms
on a new deal the board have decided it is in the club's best interests if
the 23-year-old departs. "The board have accepted the bid," Curbishley said
of the deal which is believed to be in the £8million region. "Anton has not
renegotiated his contract, and the decision was taken out of my hands. "I
don't know where Anton is in terms of signing for Sunderland but once the
club accept the bid, it moves on."

City crush 10-man Hammers
Hughes' men make light work of hapless West Ham
By Chris Burton Last updated: 24th August 2008

Moment of the match: Mark Noble was deservedly dismissed by the referee to
give Manchester City the initiative.
Attempt of the match: Johnson's powerful long-range effort in the first-half
nearly beat Green.
Save of the match: Green's acrobatic save from that Johnson shot was as good
as it got for the West Ham goalkeeper.
Talking point: Do West Ham need a complete overhaul of their squad?
Goal of the game: Elano's second goal was a fantastically executed finish.
Man of the match: Elano.

Manchester City made the most of their numerical advantage as they saw off
West Ham 3-0 at Eastlands. Mark Noble saw the first red card of the 2008/09
Premier League season, before Daniel Sturridge and a brace from Elano
allowed Mark Hughes' men to ease home. The Hammers rode their luck during an
eventful first half, with Calum Davenport slicing onto his own crossbar and
Martin Petrov striking the upright with a 25-yard free-kick. However, the
major talking of the opening period came eight minutes before the break when
Noble was given his marching orders. A needless handball saw the midfielder
shown a yellow card just after the half-hour mark, before a reckless
challenge on Michael Johnson saw him dismissed just five minutes later. City
felt hard done by after seeing a decent penalty shout waved away as the half
drew to a close, while the opening to the second 45 minutes did little to
improve their mood. The sight of England international Micah Richards being
carried off on a stretcher will concern all connected with the Blues.
However, their afternoon came good on 65 minutes when Sturridge made Matthew
Upson pay for his sloppy clearance when he fired into the roof of the net.
Brazilian playmaker Elano then doubled the advantage when he found the
bottom corner five minutes later, before wrapping up the points on 76
minutes when he coolly dispatched Stephen Ireland's pinpoint cross from the
right.

City dominated the match from the off and came close to making the
breakthrough in the 13th minute when Ireland's shot was cleared off the line
by Valon Behrami. Then Davenport almost scored an own goal, deflecting Tal
Ben Haim's effort on to his own bar. This was a promising start by City and
they looked to be playing with renewed confidence after a 4-2 defeat to
Aston Villa on the opening day. Petrov came inches away from making the
breakthrough in the 22nd minute, his superb 25-yard free-kick hitting the
outside of the post. Then Sturridge sliced a shot wide in a good spell of
pressure by the home side. West Ham striker Carlton Cole, clearly struggling
with a knock, was replaced by Freddie Sears in the 31st minute. Cole's
injury was not what manager Alan Curbishley wanted as his side were finding
it hard to get going at this stage. City had the momentum and Ireland picked
out Elano in the 37th minute, but his first touch let him down. A minute
later the Hammers suffered another blow when they were reduced to 10 men.
Noble was sent off by referee Howard Webb after getting a second yellow card
for a stiff challenge on Michael Johnson.

City poured forward and Petrov skipped away down the right in the 43rd
minute and delivered a good cross to the back post. However, Upson stood
firm and made a crucial clearance under pressure with Ireland waiting to
pounce on any mistake. Goalkeeper Robert Green then made a superb save from
Johnson in stoppage time. City regrouped after Richards was carried off 10
minutes into the second half and Elano sent a shot into Green's body from
the edge of the area after 59 minutes. They made the breakthrough seven
minutes later after a mistake by Hammers defender Upson. He lost his
concentration following a cross from Petrov and his clearance landed at the
feet of Sturridge. The striker took full advantage, hammering a shot beyond
Green to put his side in the driving seat. City went 2-0 ahead in the 70th
minute with a cool finish from Elano after he had been set up by Ireland,
and it was no more than they deserved. They kept the momentum going and made
it 3-0 in the 76th minute thanks to Elano's second goal of the game. The
Brazil playmaker scored with a superb half-volley after again being set up
by Ireland to seal a comfortable victory against a West Ham side that looked
thoroughly dispirited.

Curbs concedes defeat
Hammers boss endures disappointing day at Eastlands
By Chris Burton Last updated: 24th August 2008

Alan Curbishley admits that West Ham did not deserve to take anything from
their game at Manchester City. The Hammers went down 3-0 at Eastlands, with
Mark Noble becoming the first man to see red in the Premier League this
season. They were made to pay the price for their poor discipline when City
struck three times in the second half. An opener from Daniel Sturridge on 65
minutes was added to by a brace from Brazilian playmaker Elano. Curbishley
accepts that his side were second best in Manchester and had no complaints
as he prepared to head back to London empty-handed. "We started off okay,
but nothing really came off it and then Manchester City got on top of us and
it was one-way traffic for a little while," the Hammers boss told Sky Sports
News. "The sending off obviously didn't help. If we had kept 11 men on I
was hoping to get to half-time and change it around a bit, because Man City
were a dominant force up to the sending off and afterwards. It's been a bad
day for us."
Curbishley also felt that West Ham contributed to their own downfall by
making uncharacteristic mistakes at the back. "We've just been talking about
our defending, one or two of the goals were avoidable," he added. "Certainly
the first which was a poor clearance and when you're down to 10 men you need
things to go for you and they didn't go for us." Despite enduring a
disappointing Sunday afternoon, Curbishley has challenged his players to
bounce back on Carling Cup duty in midweek. "It's down to them and they must
do better," he said. "We know we can, but we can't talk about we have to do
it.
"We have got to start again on Wednesday when we play Macclesfield."

Anton Won't be the Last… - West Ham Till I Die

The West Ham Board have accepted a bid of £8 million for Anton Ferdinand. I
don't know why but I feel this event will have far reaching consequences.
Alan Curbishley made clear he did not want the player to go. I feel in my
water that it won't just be Anton Ferdinand heading out of the Upton Park
gates before too long.

A right Mess - Cmon Yu Irons
24 August 2008

Watching the game against Man city today, what went through my head about
West hams performance was that they were useless, gutless and a total joke.

There's no excuse saying it's because we were ten men down when Noble went
off, because we were rubbish from the start. And no excuses for injuries
either, because we had enough out there today to at least play better, even
if we still lost.

In saying this, it's evident that we need players brought in, in the form of
a forward and at the very least a creative midfielder to make the
difference. But even then will this be enough with Curbs in charge.

Before anyone says I'm one of the Curbs out gang, I just want to say that
I've supported him in the past, even after the dull football we played last
season. But after watching us in the second half of the Wigan game and at
Man city , it seemed eerily like the style of football the hammers played
last season. And even though I am willing to give Curbs a chance, even after
the dull games last season, I don't want to see that style of football at
our beloved club again.

Yes we need BG to open his wallet and strengthen the squad, but even so,
there is no excuse for these type of performances. Because if Curbishley
doesn't give this squad a kick up the backside, and this continues
regardless of new players coming in or not…those doors at West Ham will be
opening and shutting at the club, with whispers in the corridors of his head
on the block.

Today was dreadful.

The ongoing injuries - Cmon Yu Irons
25 August 2008

We were lead to to believe in the summer by experts that were sent in that
they think they had identified the problem for all the injuries. Yet despite
this and having all summer to rectify as much of this as possible the
injuries continue.

A friend of mine who worked in the physiotherapy department at the hammers
sometime ago reckons the problem lies with the surface at the training
ground, I disagree, my belief is it lies with the medical staff that
Curbishley has with him, and training methods. Not all the players at our
club were brought in as injury prone, yet even those with a good injury
record are now getting regularly crocked.

This is not an excuse for team performances as Curbs often states, it's just
a situation that should have been addressed and dealt with in the summer,
and by the looks of it, it hasn't.

Manchester City 3 West Ham United 0: City canter past West Ham to ease
crisis talk
By David Instone
Monday, 25 August 2008
Independent.co.uk

Suddenly Manchester City's horizons look several shades brighter after three
goals in quick succession midway through the second half provided an answer
to suggestions that the club are in meltdown. Following defeats against
Midtjylland and Aston Villa, this was a thoroughly deserved victory, one
that sends them to Denmark this week in much better heart.

It being City, there was still a downside, with Micah Richards taken to
hospital with a worrying head injury in front of the England coach Fabio
Capello. But West Ham will also have a king-sized headache after two goals
by Elano and one from Daniel Sturridge took full advantage of Mark Noble's
37th minute sending-off.

City made a major pre-match attempt to present an air of normality – if the
surprise appearance of their chairman Thaksin Shinawatra and members of his
family can be described as such.

The Thai appeared full of smiles as he took his seat despite being ready, in
the words of his executive chairman Garry Cook on Friday, to stand down from
the board following the "indignity" he had brought on City and the Premier
League.

As supporters absorbed newspaper suggestions that an Arab consortium was
considering a takeover bid, Cook was at pains to point out in the match
programme that there was no financial crisis at Eastlands. And the outlook
certainly looked brighter on the field as City did everything but score in
the first half.

With Mark Hughes deciding that central midfield was the correct starting
place for his midweek signing Vincent Kompany, the home side moved the ball
with pace and purpose.

West Ham enjoyed their first major escape when Calum Davenport routinely
headed Stephen Ireland's chip off the line and, in the flurry that
immediately followed, the same defender deflected Tal Ben Haim's shot
against the bar with his thigh.

The woodwork denied City for a second time six minutes later, Robert Green
barely twitching a muscle as Martin Petrov's splendid 30-yard free-kick
curled over a five-man wall and struck the outside of his left-hand post.

City had never lost the opening two games of a Premier League campaign and
they continued to give the impression that they considered the four straight
League defeats they had suffered going back to the spring to be quite
enough.

Daniel Sturridge displayed quick feet before slicing wide after an exchange
of passes with Ireland, and then brought a comfortable save out of Green.

The last thing West Ham needed in their grim battle to stay afloat was the
rush of blood in the dying minutes of the first half that left them with ten
men.

The grounded Noble was booked for thrusting out a hand to stop Kompany
escaping him in the centre circle. He then compounded his brainlessness only
four minutes later by lunging in late on Michael Johnson and earning the
inevitable second yellow from Howard Webb.

The official was less observant when Lucas Neill misjudged his jump and
clearly handled Petrov's corner, and a one-sided half ended with Green
taking off to his right to superbly beat out Johnson's well-struck
25-yarder.

Freddie Sears, on for the injured Carlton Cole, quickly became West Ham's
fall guy when he was in turn replaced by Hayden Mullins. At least Alan
Curbishley had a choice. When Richards and Ben Haim sickeningly clashed
heads in going for the same loose ball, the acting captain came off much
worse. The game was held up for eight minutes as paramedics treated him and
placed him on a stretcher, with a breathing apparatus clearly being used. It
was quickly reported by City that Richards had regained consciousness and
his visit to Manchester Royal Infirmary was precautionary.

The breakthrough finally came, though, and West Ham collapsed by conceding
three times in 13 minutes. First, Sturridge was perfectly placed to lash a
left-foot shot over Green from 15 yards when Petrov's 64th minute cross
brought a poor clearance from Matthew Upson.

With space opening up, City made the game safe. Ireland had ample time to
pull back Vedran Corluka's fine ball for Elano to control and steer past
Green. Elano then smartly tucked away Ireland's cross from the byline to put
the seal on an excellent performance from the home side.

Wingers leave Ashton without a prayer - Guardian Blogs
Dean Ashton desperately needed more support and was hampered by the
impotence of West Ham's wide players
David PleatAugust 25, 2008 12:01 AM

Dean Ashton must feel a great opportunity was denied to him in front of the
watching England manager, Fabio Capello, yesterday. The West Ham striker
lost his partner Carlton Cole to an early injury, saw Manchester City close
his supply lines in wide areas and became even more isolated after Mark
Noble's red card.

When West Ham were down to 10 men Alan Curbishley desperately needed to give
Ashton more support by conceding one of his midfield four because his team
barely looked like mounting an attack. But even while Ashton had a striker
alongside him, he was hampered by the impotence of West Ham's wide players.

With City's new signing Vincent Kompany sensibly shielding his
centre-halves, Mark Hughes' full-backs, Vedran Corluka and Michael Ball,
were able to sacrifice cover quickly and get extra tight on Matthew
Etherington and Julien Faubert.

West Ham's wide men did not respond to the challenge and the supply route to
Ashton was eroded. With City able to play touch-tight to the wingers and
higher up the field, Ashton was left isolated and it became even harder for
him when Noble gave the referee an easy decision to show the red card.

City will be encouraged by Kompany's debut. A natural centre-back, he
started in midfield and patrolled there effectively, intercepting and
tackling and moving the ball quickly to his playmakers. He retreated to
centre-back after Micah Richards went off and will have much tougher tests
than he did in that position because it was a cakewalk for City in the last
half-hour.

On this form City can improve on last season's ninth place while West Ham
will need to get injured players fit and show far more appetite in their
work and the courage to play far more ambitiously. I was shocked they did
not give Ashton better support, especially after they went behind, even if
City should always have had the advantage by maximising width with the man
extra and did everything asked of them.

Man City avert a crisis as West Ham crumble at Eastlands - Telegraph
Manchester City (0) 3 West Ham United (0) 0
By Mark Ogden
Last Updated: 10:59PM BST 24 Aug 2008

So Manchester City avoid the indignity of becoming the Premier League's
first 'team in crisis' this season and Thaksin Shinawatra, City's troubled
owner, was present to see his club dismantle West Ham and bring some
much-needed positivity to Eastlands.

These have been turbulent times at City, on and off the pitch, but two goals
from Elano and one from Daniel Sturridge secured the three points that will
lift the mood at the club and leave somebody else feeling the pressure of
having to find their first points of the season.

Frank Clark, who managed City during their dark days of the late-1990s, once
talked of a mysterious 'fifth column' that specialised in fomenting the
discord rarely far from the surface in the blue half of Manchester.

After fewer than 100 days at the helm, Hughes will know just what Clark was
alluding to with the on-going uncertainty over Shinawatra's future, and
liberty, and unhelpful comments from executive chairman Garry Cook claiming
that Hughes is a manager who does not like leaving his "comfort zone".

The only way that Hughes can ensure that this Cook doesn't spoil his broth
is by delivering results on the pitch. But, after successive defeats against
Uefa Cup opponents FC Midtjylland and Aston Villa, City were as convincing
as they could possibly be against a poor West Ham team weakened even further
by the 38th-minute dismissal of midfielder Mark Noble for two bookable
offences.

Hughes said: "It's always nice to play well in front of the owner! The win
should settle us all down now, but I have been trying to accentuate the
positives for the last few weeks, despite all of the negative aspects, if
there actually are any. There have been a lot of negative things said about
the club in the past week and it was nice to get back to football."

Bullish he may be, but Hughes desperately needed this victory, if only to
divert the attention from the loose cannons in the boardroom back onto the
pitch.

Yet by the time that Noble had been dismissed, Hughes's players had already
suggested that they were ready to deliver three points. City had twice
struck the woodwork and gone close through the promising Sturridge before
Noble departed.

City's momentum was checked early in the second half, though, when defender
Micah Richards was carried off following a clash of heads with team-mate Tal
Ben Haim.

Richards spent seven minutes receiving treatment on the pitch before he was
carried off in a neck brace while receiving oxygen, but he regained
consciousness before being taken to hospital and Hughes admitted that the
England player would now be monitored for "a couple of days", placing in
doubt his participation in the second-leg against Midtjylland on Thursday.

Having overcome the loss of Richards, Sturridge made the breakthrough for
City on 65 minutes when he finished off a move he had instigated moments
earlier.

The teenager, who celebrates his 19th birthday next Monday, laid the ball
off to Martin Petrov in midfield before racing into the penalty area to
score after Matthew Upson had failed to clear Petrov's cross.

Elano doubled City's lead from close range five minutes later and the
Brazilian then gave the home side the winning margin they deserved when he
scored a second, once again from a Stephen Ireland assist, on 76 minutes.
West Ham could have no complaints.

Manager Alan Curbishley said: "I asked for a verbal reaction from the
players after the game, but not one could hold their hands up and say that
they performed. No one held their end up today."

WHUTV - Full audio commentary

Introduction

* Alan Curbishley expects to have largely the same squad that won 2-1 at home to Wigan Athletic on Saturday 16 August for what will be the first home match for new Manchester City manager Mark Hughes. He began his City career with a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa on the opening day.

* Curbishley said: "I think Mark Hughes knows what he is doing. He has been very successful. I don't see that changing. Once he gets embedded at Man City, they will be a decent side. They were a decent side last year ... I am expecting them to do OK this year."

* Speaking to mcfc.co.uk, Hughes said: "They had a decent result at the weekend, they got off to a good start which settled everybody down, scoring two goals quite early on. By all accounts they were put under pressure by Wigan in the second half and could have lost the game in the end. The key for us is that we are nice and solid at the back."

* The teams met four times last season - twice in the league and twice in the FA Cup - with this weekend's hosts just having the better of it with a win and two draws.

* Dean Ashton scored twice in the win against Wigan and has happy memories of playing against City as he struck twice there in the 2-1 win in the 2005/06 FA Cup quarter-final meeting as the Hammers went all the way to Wembley.

* Ashton has six goals in five pre-season matches while in competitive league matches he has struck seven goals in his last nine appearances.

* Going back to last season, West Ham United have not won in six matches on their travels and lost the last three while City have not won any of their last four league meetings. This weekend's hosts have not lost any of the last half-dozen meetings between the two clubs.

* City have never lost their opening two matches in any of their previous eleven Barclays Premier League campaigns. Last season, West Ham United won their first three away games in all competitions.

* Mark Hughes is well known to Lucas Neill as the club captain played under the Manchester City manager when both were at Blackburn Rovers.

* West Ham United are next in action at home against Macclesfield Town in the Carling Cup second round on Wednesday night, the day before Manchester City go to Denmark hoping to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Cup second qualifying round.

Team news

* Dean Ashton has been in training this week after coming off late in the game against Wigan with severe cramp in his calf and should play. Scott Parker was also replaced with a thigh problem but it is hoped he could figure.

* Lucas Neill, Valon Behrami, Matthew Upson, Mark Noble and Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson all came through international duty with their respective countries on Tuesday and Wednesday.

* George McCartney has been back at Chadwell Heath after a virus that laid him low for nearly two weeks just as he was recovering from a hamstring injury. He could play in a practice game in midweek alongside some others getting near to fitness.

* Anton Ferdinand and Craig Bellamy are getting closer to their playing returns after hamstring injuries suffered on 4 August away to Ipswich and have been in training.

* James Collins and Nigel Quashie got 45 minutes each against Queen's Park Rangers in a behind closed doors game last Tuesday. Collins has not played since mid-January when he suffered a knee ligament injury while on reserve-team duty. Quashie last played for the second string back in December and has had a persistent foot injury.

* Luis Boa Morte, who scored both goals in the 2-2 draw against QPR, and Lee Bowyer played the majority of the game and will be pushing hard for a first-team start at the City of Manchester Stadium.

* James Tomkins and Jack Collison could be back in two to three weeks after knee problems suffered on England U19 duty and training respectively.

* Jonathan Spector should be back at Chadwell Heath in September to continue his rehabilitation from hip surgery. Kieron Dyer is also continuing his personal training programme as he bids to return from his double leg break. Danny Gabbidon is the main long-term absentee with his abdominal problem.

* City will be without the suspended Richard Dunne but are hoping new signing Vincent Kompany - who joined from Hamburger SV on Friday - could take his place at the back, provided he gets clearance to play. He is the third new recruit after Brazil striker Jo and Israel centre-back Tal Ben-Haim.

* Up front, Jo will not be back from Olympic duty in time to feature while Bulgaria striker Valeri Bojinov is sidelined with an achilles injury suffered last week. To further complicate matters, Darius Vassell (knee) and Benjani (thigh) are also expected to miss out.

Background

* The 2007/08 league season started with City's trip to the Boleyn Ground on 11 August and it was the first game in charge for manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, who lasted only a season. Rolando Bianchi (18) and Geovanni (87) scored both goals. That was followed by the first FA Cup third-round meeting on 5 January again in east London when neither side could break the deadlock in a contest that saw Robert Green and Joe Hart excel.

* The replay at the City of Manchester Stadium was again a tight affair and only a 73rd-minute headed goal from Elano separated the sides. The final meeting last season was the 1-1 league draw four days later on 20 January. Carlton Cole scored a terrific overhead kick in the eighth minute before Darius Vassell struck a 16th-minute equaliser.

* The lineups in that last meeting were:

West Ham United: Green, Neill, Ferdinand, Upson, McCartney, Ljungberg, Noble, Mullins Bowyer (Spector 90), Boa Morte (Faubert 71), Cole
Subs not used: Wright, Collins, Reid

Manchester City: Hart, Corluka, Dunne, Richards, Ball, Ireland (Geovanni 68), Hamann, Elano (Garrido 78), Petrov, Vassell (Gelson 58), Bianchi
Subs not used: Isaksson, Onuoha

Behrami making his mark - WHUFC
The manager is pleased with the contribution to date of Valon Behrami since his arrival from Lazio
23.08.2008

Valon Behrami is being tipped to be a hit with the West Ham United fans by his manager Alan Curbishley.

The 23-year-old, who was on international duty with Switzerland this week, turned in an impressive Barclays Premier League debut last week in the home win against Wigan Athletic and the manager is expecting more of the same at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. "He is the sort of player who is going to love every minute. He loves every minute of training. He is going to love every minute of the games."

Curbishley added: "He has shown his versatility already for us. He has played right-back, he went to wide right on Saturday and he can play midfield." Behrami's dedication was shown by the way he threw himself straight into the club's pre-season programme as soon as he arrived. The manager added: "He has got the attributes for the Premier League and I think he is one player that will enjoy the full on 90 minutes."

The manager added that he expects even more from his £5m recruit from Lazio "once he gets his feet under the table". Summing up, he said: "He has got what the West Ham fans want. He is all action. He is 150 per cent in everything he does. He is one of those players that is very attack-minded and plays with a bit of freedom. [As] someone who wants to get past [Julien] Faubert when he is in full flight, he must fancy his chances because his mileage is unbelievable."

While the manager is more than content with his big-money summer signing, he added that he is still "looking to add" to his squad. He is also relishing the chance to promote more youngsters from the academy - such as 18-year-old England youth starlet Jordan Spence, who was on the bench on opening day - with the increased number of potential replacements allowed. Curbishley said: "It is giving one or two of the youngsters an opportunity ... perhaps some more will get a taste of it."

Honours even for U18s - WHUFC
A solid start to the season saw West Ham United's youngsters earn a 0-0 draw on Saturday
23.08.2008

West Ham United U18s 0-0 Manchester United U18s

Tony Carr was more than content with his Under-18s on Saturday after they secured a goalless draw in their opening game of the FA Premier Academy League season.

The young Hammers were solid throughout although both teams had their moments to take all the points, with the impressive Ahmed Abdulla and Josh Payne particularly having good chances late on to take the points. Adam Street was also in fine form in the home goal at Little Heath. West Ham United are next in action on Saturday when the Group A side play another inter-group game away to Leeds United.

Carr said: "It was a good solid start. We are really pleased. Maybe on reflection we might have won it but I think they might think the same. For a nil-nil draw, it was a very entertaining and open game." The late opportunities saw the versatile Payne take a quick shot when he perhaps did not realise he had more time while Ahmed Abdulla had been sent free by Oliver Lee and got beyond the last defender but was off balance as he struck for goal.

The academy director was very happy to avoid conceding yet again in a competitive home match. His strong side, that featured Austrian summer recruit Georg Grasser as a second-half replacement in midfield, had ended last season with three clean sheets at home - with 2-0, 5-0 and 4-0 wins at Little Heath - and again looked strong at the back.

"It was important to get a clean sheet," he said. "It keeps you in the game all the time. Manchester United had their moments obviously as you would expect but I thought we defended very well and worked very hard. It was very very hot and we just about edged it. Maybe it would not have been an injustice if we had won.

"It was a hot day and we had put in a lot of effort. Both teams were wilting but obviously at that point one goal was going to win it for either team. Although he didn't have too much to do, Adam Street made a good couple of saves when he needed to. Overall we were quite pleased."

West Ham United: Street, Brookes, Fry, N'Gala, Eyjolfsson, Lee, Payne, Kearns (Montano 77), Okus (Grasser 67), Ahmed Abdulla, Edgar

Captain's Blog - A good start - WHUFC
Lucas Neill reflects on a great start to the season, not least for Dean Ashton, and looks ahead
22.08.2008

It was a fantastic way to start the season with a win at home and a very impressive first- half performance. Granted we rode our luck at times in the second half. However, it is the result that counts and it gives us a platform and confidence to build on. I have said it on numerous occasions that the crowd plays a crucial role for us and this year we need you once again. Teams will be turning up hoping to get a result which is why you the fans have to make the atmosphere an intimidating one and Upton Park a daunting place to come.

It was great to see Deano start the season off with a brace and had it not been for the scare with his calf I am sure he would have joined Matty Upson for a well earned England call-up. A few of us have been with our respective countries this week, Valon Behrami helped Switzerland to a great 4-1 win over Cyprus, Mark Noble was deservedly handed the armband against Slovenia for the Under-21s where they won 2-1 and I captained my side to a 2-2 draw against South Africa. It is always an honour to play for your country but I have to admit the timing was strange having only played one game of the season.

This week we travel to the City of Manchester stadium to take on my former boss and a Manchester City team who started the season with a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa. On the back of their defeat and our victory we go there positive and determined to put together early back to back wins and keep the momentum going. I feel it is a good time for us to be visiting Manchester City when Mark Hughes' influence may not quite be in full flow yet. However, you can be guaranteed of a very tough game and you know you will have come away with points the hard way.

Shortly following that will be Wednesday's game against Macclesfield Town. We want to advance further than we did last year in our Carling Cup campaign and are hoping to get past the quarter-final stage. So with a home draw and a bit of luck along on the way we could have a successful campaign. It is a competition that must be taken seriously as it is a path to Europe and it is an opportunity to win some silverware. I look forward to the no doubt electric atmosphere evening games at Upton Park inevitably generate.

Thank you in advance to those who travel up this weekend and for your support on Wednesday,

Lucas Neill

It is early days, though, and these things can take time. "We worked extremely hard in pre-season and are looking for a positive result from our first league game at home."

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley on Man City counterpart Mark Hughes: Mark knows what he is doing, and he has been very successful. I do not see that changing. Tony Carr's youngsters kicked off their 2008/09 campaign with a goalless draw against Manchester United at Little Heath this morning. A crowd numbering around 500 - many of whom were local fans supporting the away team - watched the two sides battle out a 0-0 draw on a balmy summer's day. Both teams has chances to snatch a win but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing ensured the spoils were shared. United's Adam Street - in for regular keeper Marek Stech - had to be at his best to deny a late effort from Manchester's Federico Macheda which he tipped over the bar. At the other end Saudi striker Ahmed Abdulla - who played much of the game with a nasty-looking cut to his face following a first half challenge from Reece Brown - missed a gilt-edged chance when sent clear through in the final stages. The visitors also saw a late penalty claim denied when Brandao tumbled over in the box; the referee rightly ignoring Menchester's claims. Next up for Tony Carr's young charges is the visit to Leeds next weekend.

West Ham United: Street (7), Brookes (6), Fry (5), N'Gala (7), Eyjolfsson (7), Kearns (6) (Montano 77 (6)), Edgar (6), Lee (6), Okus (6) (Grasser 67 (5)), Payne(c) (6), Abdulla (5).

Manchester United: Woods, Strickland, Gill, Brown, Wootton, Norwood, James, Petrucci (Brady 64), Stewart (Curran 80), Macheda, Brandao (Ajose 53).

Man of the Match: Adam Street - there when it mattered.

Curbishley: no fallout - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 22nd August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Alan Curbishley has denied rumours of a falling-out between himself and the club's technical director, Gianluca Nani. One daily newspaper claimed earlier in the week that the United boss and Nani had crossed swords over triallist Sebastian Pinto, stating that Curbishley has annoyed the Italian director after refusing to play the Chilean striker in a specially-arranged friendly. However Curbishley dismissed the story in today's pre-match press conference, claiming that it was nonsense. "I do despair sometimes about what is written about us and I've been saying it for 18 months but it doesn't seem to make any difference," he said. "If someone had just made a phone call [they would have know that] the boy played. He came over, he played on Tuesday for 80 minutes in a reserve game arranged with QPR a week before for James Collins to play in. We didn't fancy him and he's gone back. "After the game, me and Nani went to QPR to watch South Africa and Australia and then I dropped him home, so if we'd had a big row he wouldn't have got in the car!"

Tosh: no Gabbs til 2009 - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 22nd August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Welsh international boss John Toshack has claimed that West Ham United's Danny Gabbidon is unlikely to return to first team action until next year.
The 59-year-old former Liverpool start was talking about his nation's forthcoming World CUp qualifiers, for which Gabbidon had hoped to return earlier in the year. However Toshack believes that he will be without his number one central defender until 2009, with no signs of an imminent solution to his injury problems. "Gabbidon is still way off and won't be back until next year," he said. "Across the back we are thin on the ground." However the news for United's other Welsh centre-half, James Collins, was more encouraging; he could return to first team action by the beginning of October - just nine months after suffering a potentially career-thretening injury. "Collins played for West Ham reserves this week and hopefully he will be available for our World Cup qualifying double-header with Azerbaijan and Russia in September," confirmed the Welsh manager. Talking to whufc.com, Collins confirmed that he was itching to play once again (an interview which coincided neatly with the news that Anton Ferdinand is set to sign for Sunderland). "It was good to be back out there but also very strange," he said. "I think it was the most nervous I have ever been before a game in my life but I got through it. "It is the worst injury of my career and it has been a long old road trying to get back. When I first got the injury the surgeon seemed to think I could be out for a year or even 18 months. "I feel like I still have a big part to play in West Ham's future so I am just looking to get my head down and concentrate on getting back as soon as possible. My aim is to get straight into the team."

West Ham are yet again being linked with a move for Palermo's Australian midfielder Mark Bresciano. The Sicilians claimed last night that both West Ham and Rangers had been in discussion with representatives of Bresciano, who was watched by Alan Curbishley and Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road on Tuesday night when playing for Australia in their 2-2 draw with South Africa. Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini told Italian reporters: "There are currently negotiations with West Ham and Glasgow Rangers, but I am hoping he stays. He is a player who makes a difference. "We value the player at around €7m; last year I rejected an €8m bid for him." In a recent interview with Australia's Channel 10 last night Bresciano reiterated his desire to move to the Premier League - and mentioned West Ham as a possible destination. A left midfielder by trade, He was part of the team that knocked West Ham out of the UEFA Cup two seasons ago.

Anton: yes to Sunderland? - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 22nd August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Anton Ferdinand is expected to say 'yes' to a move to Sunderland later today. The 23-year-old centre-half has spent the last 48 hours mulling over a move to the North East after West Ham accepted a bid worth in the region of £8million. Having already rejected the opportunity to move to Newcastle earlier in the summer the former under-21 had been holding out for a possible rival move from Tottenham. However as that failed to materialise he was left with Sunderland as the only option - a move to which he is thought to be ready to rubber-stamp today. Ferdinand made his debut for the Hammers at Preston on the opening day of the 2003/04 campaign. But it was his partnership with Elliott Ward in the centre of defence the following season that saw him come of age as the Hammers won promotion back to the Premiership. The following year - 2005/06 - he was again a regular in what was United's first season back in the top flight. However the season ended on a sour note as Ferdinand missed United's final penalty in the 2006 FA Cup Final shootout which led to the trophy going to Liverpool. Things went from bad to worse the following season for the boy from Peckham when he was arrested and later charged with assault and violent conduct following a fracas outside Face nightclub (he was later acquitted in November 2007). He was also disciplined by the club after travelling to the USA for a lads' jolly, having told his employers that he was absent from work in order to visit his sick grandmother. His potential sale has polarised opinion amongst Hammers fans, with just as many being happy to part company with a defender who, they feel, lacks concentration as those disappointed with the club's decision to allow another Academy product to leave the club. * Sunderland boss Roy Keane has also been linked with a £5million move for Ferdinand's team mate Carlton Cole.

Alan Curbishley calls for Dean Ashton to be handed England role - Telegraph
As Dean Ashton fights to be fit for West Ham's trip to Manchester City, his manager insists he is the ideal striker for England.
By Andrew Warshaw
Last Updated: 11:41PM BST 23 Aug 2008

Ashton was watched by England manager Fabio Capello on the opening day of the season, when he scored twice against Wigan, but a calf strain subsequently ruled him out of last week's friendly with the Czech Republic. But Alan Curbishley believes Ashton is the best man for the job if Capello opts to play one out-and-out striker. He said: "If he [Capello] is going to play the shape when he's got players coming from midfield and needs somebody who will bring other players into the game, then he should look at Dean." Ashton, 24, played nine times for the England Under-21 side, scoring four goals, before finally making his full England debut, more than two years after his first call-up, in the game against Trinidad and Tobago in June. Ashton has been compared to the former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer.

Dean Ashton's blond ambition - The Times
The West Ham striker has a point to prove to Fabio Capello at Manchester City today
Joe Lovejoy

Albert King sings in Born Under A Bad Sign, "If it wasn't for bad luck , I wouldn't have no luck at all". Dean Ashton knows how the old Mississippi blues-man felt. After another missed England opportunity in midweek, the West Ham striker's international career has had more false starts than the Grand National.

Still only 24, Ashton might have had that many caps by now. Instead, he was passed over for a juvenile tourist (Theo Walcott) at the last World Cup, broke an ankle in training the day before he was due to make his debut in Steve McClaren's first match in charge, was recalled last season at home to Estonia and promptly strained knee ligaments, and was due to be picked last weekend, only to be ruled out of the dreadful 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic by a phantom injury that turned out to be cramp.

Consequently, the man once tipped to be the new Alan Shearer has been restricted to just 45 minutes in an England shirt, in the friendly away to Trinidad and Tobago at the end of last season. Even that first cap was the cause of embarrassment, as well as elation, Fabio Capello telling Ashton that he was overweight. Dressing-room banter being what it is, nearly every teammate who passed by as we chatted at West Ham's training ground on Friday mentioned pizza, or pies, but Ashton is big enough to take it, in every sense.

Having just parked his Porsche Cayenne in the middle of the motor show that is Chadwell Heath, he admitted that the money footballers earn was ample compensation for criticism of almost any sort - even from Disgusted of Wembley last Wednesday. An articulate young man, capped by England at every level from under17s up, he is both polite, apologising for being a few minutes late (Sol Campbell once kept me waiting for 2½ hours and didn't) and disarmingly honest (he accepts he needed to shed surplus avoirdupois and that he "didn't set the world alight" on his international baptism).

It seemed an appropriate starting point to clear up his omission from Capello's latest squad. The England coach was at Upton Park to check on Ashton and saw him score twice against Wigan, before hobbling off. Some four hours later, the man of the match suffered premature ejection, Emile Heskey getting the nod instead. Ashton said: "I went to take a free kick and my calf cramped up. The staff said they didn't want to take any risks, so I came off. The club wanted me to have a scan the next day to make sure that it was just cramp, and because I was waiting for that, and the squad was being named on the Saturday night, England assumed I was unavailable. I knew it was only cramp, so obviously I was really disappointed to miss out."

It was ever thus, or so it seemed. "Because of the timing of the injuries I've had, before England games, I've been labelled injury-prone, but anybody can get a bone broken," Ashton said. "That's nothing to do with fitness or strength. My ankle was broken [in a collision with Shaun Wright-Phillips] before we played Greece, that was just bad luck. Then I got back and had a minor strain to my medial ligament, which put me out against Estonia. That's it really. It's a myth that I'm injured a lot. That's another reason why I was so disappointed last weekend – because it was made out that I was injuredagainwhen I wasn't."

There is still plenty of time to forge an international career, but frustration is starting to creep in. Ashton said: "If I hadn't broken the ankle I would have started that game. They won comfortably [4-0] so I might have scored a couple and played ever since. And I was only 22 then, but there's no point dwelling on that."

It is widely accepted that England need an "old-fashioned" centre-forward, in the Shearer mould, and Ashton contended that the role was up for grabs. He said: "For a long time there hasn't been a player of that type who has done so well that he has to be in the team. When Michael Owen is fit and playing regularly, clearly he deserves to be in. You always think he's going to score. But apart from him, nobody can say, 'I've played so well that I deserve that place'. A lot of strikers, including myself, are looking for their chance, but you need time on the pitch - more than the 45 minutes I got in Trinidad." In Port of Spain, Jermain Defoe eclipsed him, scoring twice in a 3-0 win. "To me, being a forward is all about scoring goals, so I'm never happy if I don't," said Ashton. "I've watched the video of that game and I had one good chance, which I didn't take, but it was my debut, I was very nervous, and I thought I did okay." Capello was more worried about his physique than his finishing. "When I was injured, I was in the gym a lot, and I'd really bulked up," Ashton explained. "My body fat percentage wasn't high, but I was big from doing weights. When the England manager tells you you've got a chance if you trim down, you do it. I really knuckled down."

Ashton signed a new, five-year contract this summer with West Ham, who face Manchester City today, and anticipates an improvement on last season's 10th place. "We'd like to be challenging for the top six," he said.

For the past two years, Alan Curbishley and his team had been hampered by a debilitating sequence of injuries. Bad luck, or was there perhaps more to it? "I'm not a physio, but I have my opinions. Let's just say that I didn't use the medical team here for my rehab, I used my own man, Jon Green, who has worked with Michael Owen as well." The "Claret and Blue Army" was as loyal as they come, but they were not the easiest fans to play for. "They can turn on their own, and there are times when you think, 'That's a bit unfair'." With England, too, criticism came with the territory. "I don't think it's fair that when [Frank] Lampard left the field the other night he was booed, but it's part of football and you've got to take it on the chin. These are the strongest players in the country, mentally, as well as the best. I'd be nervous about playing for England at Wembley for the first time, but I wouldn't feel intimidated by the crowd. At the moment, England seem to be like a club team struggling against relegation when they shouldn't be. Sometimes you get into that losing habit and develop a negative mindset."

Curbs - Deano can do it - SSN
Hammers' boss says 'keeper must be in Capello's mind
By Hayley Paterson Last updated: 23rd August 2008

Alan Curbishley believes Dean Ashton could be the answer to England's centre-forward options. The West Ham boss has urged his powerful striker to keep "plugging away" and his prayers of more England chances will soon be answered. The 24-year-old made an instant impact in the Premier League opening win with a brace against Wigan, but then he limped off with a calf strain. That injury kept him out of contention for the England friendly against the Czech Republic, which ended in a disappointing 2-2 draw, as Fabio Capello started with Jermain Defoe up front before bringing on Emile Heskey. "If he (Capello) is going to play with a lone striker and (Wayne) Rooney coming from deep, flooding the midfield, then perhaps he will take a look at Dean," the Hammers boss said. "If he is going to play with one and wants someone to hold the ball up, bring others into the game and then take a chance when it is presented, then I do think if a ball drops to Deano in the penalty box, something is going to happen. "Deano started off really well against Wigan and now has another game to impress, like so many players. "Rob Green is another one here who must come into Capello's thinking. "All they can do is to keep plugging away."
West Ham will be hoping to make it two wins in two when they take on Manchester City on Bank Holiday Sunday.

Hammers take flight to land Appiah - lep.co.uk

West Ham staff fly to Italy this week in a bid to snap up Ghana ace Stephen Appiah - from under the noses of Tottenham. The midfielder, 27, played with Turkish club Fernebahce last season but he wants to move on and has been linked with both West Ham and Tottenham. Appiah, who suffered a long spell out with injury, previously played for Juventus and is currently living back in Turin. The first problem for Alan Curbishley's outfit is to clarify his contractual status before aiming to secure either a loan move or permanent deal ahead of the transfer window closure.

Let Ash Fire Up England - The Sun

FABIO CAPELLO has been urged to let Dean Ashton take England's attack to new heights. West Ham boss Alan Curbishley claims Ashton has the physical presence to become a one-man strikeforce for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia. Capello tried Jermain Defoe and then Emile Heskey up front alone - with Wayne Rooney just behind - in Wednesday's dismal 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic. And Curbishley believes Hammers targetman Ashton has the right blend of power, panache and poaching ability to fill the role. Curbs said: "If Capello is going to play with one and wants someone to hold the ball up, bring others into the game and then take a chance when it is presented, then I do think if a ball drops to Deano in the penalty box, then something is going to happen. "If he is going to play with a lone striker and Rooney coming from deep, flooding the midfield, then perhaps he will take a look at Dean. "Whether that is in the qualifiers, we will have to wait and see."
Ashton, 24, looked lively as he netted twice in West Ham's 2-1 opening-day victory over Wigan last Saturday. But he limped off with a calf injury that ruled him out of England's Wembley debacle. Curbishley added: "Deano started off really well against Wigan and now has another game to impress, like so many players. "Rob Green is another one here who must come into Capello's thinking. "All they can do is to keep plugging away."

Thaksin offers to resign from Man City board - sportsillustrated.com

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra has offered to resign from the club's board and has been advised to stay away from Sunday's game against West Ham over fears for his safety. The former Thai prime minister was due to face corruption charges in a Bangkok court Monday, but instead jumped bail and took a flight from Beijing, where he had been watching the Olympics, back to exile in England. City chief executive Garry Cook said Thaksin had offered his resignation from the board, but insisted that he would remain as owner. "Dr. Thaksin is embarrassed about the indignity brought on all the entities - the club, the Premier League - he never intended this,'' Cook said. "Thaksin has been really open about this. He has said to me, 'If you need me to resign from the football club as a director, because it would serve the needs of the Premier League, then I'm fine with that as long as that doesn't change any other thing.'''
Cook said Thaksin may stay away from the West Ham game - City's first home match of the season - after being told he might not be safe. "He wants to be at this ground on Sunday but he is hearing advice about being in a public space,'' Cook said. The Premier League may now look into whether he passes the so-called "fit and proper person'' test for being involved in a topflight club, but Cook said that term was very vague. "I think there is a very loose term about what is 'fit and proper,''' Cook said. "It is almost a tongue-in-cheek term that you would use for Premier League football over the last 10 years. There are plenty of unfit and improper individuals.''
Thaksin's assets have been frozen in Thailand, but Cook said that would put City at risk and claimed the charges against the owner were politically motivated. "Thaksin is in a political situation and a case that affects his assets, so that's well documented. So that's a hurdle,'' Cook admitted. "The truth of it is this club is not going to go out of business. This club is not bankrupt. We're moving forward.''

Former Hammers winger back at work after hospital scare - Guardian Series
10:14am Saturday 23rd August 2008

FORMER West Ham winger Liam Brady has been discharged from hospital and will return to work today. The 52-year-old, who is the Republic of Ireland's assistant manager and head of Arsenal's academy , was taken to Dublin's Beaumont Hospital on Thursday morning after complaining of back and chest pains and was detained overnight for tests. Prior to that the former winger had been away on international duty and was said to be suffering with pains in his back during Ireland's 1-1 draw with Norway in Oslo. Brady flew home with the rest of the squad but, upon his arrival in Dublin, he was taken to Beaumont Hospital for tests. But everything now appears fine with Brady set to be back watching football today. "He has been given a clean bill of health and has told us he will return to work, when he will travel to London to be at the Tottenham v Sunderland match," the Football Association of Ireland said.

Pantsil admits to West Ham frustration - Guardian Series
9:55am Saturday 23rd August 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

FORMER Upton Park cult hero John Pantsil has claimed he was "frustrated" with his lack of opportunities at West Ham United. The Ghana international became a popular figure during his two seasons at the Boleyn Ground due to his all-action style of play and engaging personality. Such was the full-back's popularity that Pantsil even went on his own individual lap of honour following the final game of last term against Aston Villa. However, after making just 24 league and cup appearances, the former Hapoel Tel Aviv player joined Fulham with team-mate Bobby Zamora in a joint £6.3million deal in July. And Pantsil has vowed to make up for lost time at Craven Cottage. "Fulham is a fantastic place for me to continue my career," he insisted. "I was frustrated at West Ham because I wasn't playing. As an international, sitting on the bench was not enough for me. "I needed to go where I could get more action so, when Fulham came in, I was happy to join them because it is a great side and had a lot of prospects for me. "I strongly disagree that we will be fighting relegation again this season. I'm confident we'll finish in the top 10 rather than be fighting relegation." Pantsil will also have his name spelled correctly as "Paintsil" on the back of his Fulham shirt.
An administrative error meant the 27-year-old ran around with the incorrect spelling on his West Ham shirt, but the mistake has been corrected on his new registration documents.

Daily WHUFC News - II 22nd August 2008

All the odds for Manchester - WHUFC
Ahead of the trip to Manchester City, here's what on offer from JAXX, our
official online sports betting partner...
22.08.2008

After a superb 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic to start the new Barclays
Premier League campaign, West Ham United travel to the City of Manchester
Stadium on Sunday looking to maintain their 100 per cent record.

Games between Manchester City and West Ham United usually do not produce
many goals. In fact, only one of the last nine meetings in the top flight
has produced three goals or more. The Hammers have won just once at City in
nine previous league meetings - that coming in 2003 - but they drew this
fixture 1-1 last term.

For the televised match, West Ham United are on offer at 43/20, with the
draw available at 11/5. If you think the result will be the same as last
season, 5/1 is on offer for a 1-1 draw. It might be worth remembering that
goals have been traditionally hard to come by when these two meet, since you
can bet under or over 2.5 goals in each game with JAXX. It is 13/20 that
there will be fewer than 2.5 goals scored in total, and 19/20 that there
will be more than 2.5 goals.

Dean Ashton, who scored six goals in five pre-season friendlies before
notching a double against Wigan, has now struck seven goals in his last nine
Premier League outings. Therefore, the 7/20 available for West Ham United to
score at any time might be worth chancing. It is 17/10 that the visitors
fail to find the net on Sunday.

Buoyed by their opening-day victory, and with City still looking to find a
bit of confidence, it might be worth backing West Ham United on the JAXX
Handicap. Alan Curbishley's men are 9/20 receiving a mythical goal start. So
if you take that price and the Hammers win or draw, your bet will be
successful. City are 17/5 to win by two clear goals or more and the Handicap
draw (a City victory by the odd goal) is available at 27/10.

Perhaps more inviting is 17/20 for Alan Curbishley's men to be the first
team to score, meaning a successful £20 bet will return £37. They are 1/1
(Evens) with JAXX to be the last team to score.

You can also bet on which half will produce most goals. The first half is
39/20, the second half is 1/1, or for an equal amount of goals in each half,
41/20 is available. Check out a multitude of markets for Sunday's showdown,
including corrrect score, half-time/full time, half-time result and half
with most goals.

JAXX are once again proud to be the official betting partner of West Ham
United and the London-based online bookmaker offer a wide range of exclusive
season-long specials for Hammers fans. Don't forget to check them out!

And that's not all - register with JAXX, place your first bet and you will
get a FREE matching bet to the value of your own stake, up to £25. For
example, if your first bet is £25, it will be doubled and you will be given
another £25 to bet absolutely free. Your free bet will be credited to your
account within 48 hours of placing your first bet with JAXX.

Tickets are on general sale from today for the Carling Cup tie against
Macclesfield Town at the Boleyn Ground on Wednesday 27 August.

available by clicking here. Adult prices start from £15 with children at
just £5. Having breezed through the first round by beating Championship side
Blackpool, the Silkmen will be hopeful of another cup shock.

With nothing to lose, Macclesfield will prove a test for Alan Curbishley's
men. It is set up for an intriguing cup contest that may see some of the
club's rising stars look to grab the limelight in a fixture that must be
decided on the night.

Carr ready for season start - WHUFC
Tony Carr's youngsters will begin their Under-18 campaign against Manchester
United on Saturday
22.08.2008

West Ham United Under-18's get the 2008/09 FA Premier Academy League
campaign under way with the visit of Manchester United on Saturday morning.

Tony Carr's side will welcome the high-profile opposition to Little Heath
hoping this new campaign will match the achievements of last season when the
team produced some good performances and saw a number of players make the
step up to reserve and even first-team level. While the likes of Marek Stech
and Freddie Sears are still eligible to play if selected, a number of
younger prospects have made the step up from the U16s.

The game will be one of the club's inter-group matches this season, outside
of their normal Group A opponents who they play on a home and away basis.
Carr said: "Regardless of who we are playing it is just nice after six weeks
of pre-season training, playing friendlies, using lots of players and
experimenting with formations to get the league programme going. As it is
Manchester United it does give it that little bit of extra spice and makes
it that little bit more difficult of course but certainly everyone is
looking forward to it."

"The local south-east clubs we play on a regular basis but to play
Manchester United and Leeds United in our first two games is not something
we normally do - unless we draw them in the FA Youth Cup - and we are
looking forward to it. Everything has gone well in pre-season. It looks as
if we have got a clean bill of health for this weekend and I have got a fit
squad to choose from. Hopefully we will rise to the occasion and put on a
good performance."

Manchester City v West Ham Utd - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 21st August 2008
By: Preview Percy

So if the lead-up to our pre-season was a tad dull, that of our next
opponents has been anything but. Last season began very promisingly for "The
Citizens" with a 2-0 win at the Boleyn as owner Thaksin 'Frank' Shinawatra
ushered in the era of Sven Goran Eriksson. However the early promise wasn't
maintained and rumours of the Swede's impending departure were rife well
before the last-day 8-1 thrashing at the hands of an ordinary Middlesbrough.

In the end, although everyone knew he was going, it took two months of the
close season for Eriksson – or possibly his lookalike – to actually
disappear, and the haste with which his new job as Mexico coach was
announced after the official sacking suggests that the Swede was far from
being the last to know he wouldn't be checking back into his Manchester
hotel in July.

Enter Mark Hughes who, at the time, was also allegedly a target for Chelsea.
Then the fun really started. The club spent a while being linked with
Ronaldinho before Kia Joorabchian, whose name rings a bell for some reason,
brought Joao Alves de Assis Silva, aka (thankfully) 'Jo,' across from the
decidedly un-Brazilian location of Moscow, where the big striker had scored
44 goals in 77 for CSKA. Then Chairman Frank found himself at the wrong end
of a Thai arrest warrant. The warrant may or may not have been politically
motivated but the threat of a worldwide asset-freeze and the fact that the
UK has a fully functional extradition treaty with Thailand may have prompted
a worried glance or two down the corridors of Eastlands. Of less worry will
have been the Premier League's mutterings about their 'fit and proper
person' test which, as the continued presence of Whe*an at Wigan has proved,
is even harder to fail than an A-level.

Rumours started to fly about and, depending on who you believe, Hughes was
disappointed/mildly disappointed/quite happy with the money he was being
given and was ready to walk out at the drop of a hat/stay for the rest of
his life. Newspapers eh? Further tales of players being touted for sale
without the manager's knowledge surfaced as the team embarked on a curious
pre-season involving a combination of prestige friendlies against the likes
of AC Milan (won 1-0) Celtic (2-2) Hamburg (lost 0-1) and, er, Stockport
(2-2), together with UEFA Cup qualification rounds against EB Streymur (4-0
on aggregate) and FC Midtjyland to whom they suffered the embarrassment of a
1-0 home defeat in the first leg.

In the end the only other significant arrival to date has been Tal Ben-Haim
who came in from Chelsea having had an unsuccessful spell there. The 'out'
door has been busier though with a number of players disappearing to
pastures new. City have in recent years invested in a decent youth system
and we can expect to see a number of players from the current FA Youth Cup
holders emerging over the course of the season – especially if the rumours
concerning the Thai government and the chairman's frozen assets are to be
believed and the potential transfer kitty dries up – news of a recent £25m
bank loan secured on future tv income having added to fans' concerns rather
than easing them.

For Sunday's match we can expect England U21 'keeper Joe Hart between the
sticks. Hart has withstood challenges from the now departed Andreas Isaakson
and Kaspar 'Son Of Red Nose' Schmeichel and was named in the latest England
squad – something that must have raised an eyebrow or two in the Rob Green
household. In defence, one of Hughes's first actions on taking over was to
sign up Richard Dunne on a new contract. He will be missing for our match
though through suspension having been sent off in the Boro' debacle.
Ben-Haim partnered the talented Micah Richards in the middle for the Villa
opener and Corluka should start at right-back if Frank hasn't sold him
first.

In the middle City started with Academy graduate Kelvin Etuhu lining up
alongside Michael Johnson Gelson Fernandes with Martin Petrov given the job
of providing pace and skill down their left hand side. Other noteworthy
midfielders in the squad include Didier Hamann, scorer of the last goal at
the old Wembley (though the record should be asterisked to note the fact
that it was David Seaman in goal) and former Cobh Ramblers youngster Stephen
Ireland whose international career has been interrupted by a spot of
indiscipline including his not being where he was supposed to be due to the
supposed demise of either or both of his grandmothers – something that Anton
Ferdinand might be familiar with.

Up front City have not been without problems already this season. The
aforementioned Jo missed the Villa match due to being at the Olympics and,
despite Brazil being knocked out in the semi-finals, he is unlikely to
feature in Sunday's match unless he is let off Friday night's bronze medal
match and given a flight home on an incredibly fast plane. The luckless
Bojinov missed nearly all of last term with a cruciate ligament injury and
was due to make his return at Villa only to collapse with a ruptured
Achilles on his way out to warm-up, an injury likely to add another six
months on the treatment table.

Darius Vassell – a player who strangely always seems to be better at
international level than at domestic - is also a long-term absentee as is
Benjani, whose transfer history has attracted recent attention from the FA.
This leaves City desperately short up front and academy products Daniel
'nephew of Dean & Simon' Sturridge and Ched Evans, who appeared at Villa
Park on Sunday, may have to shoulder the burden this weekend unless Hughes
can bring in a striker beforehand with whatever funds are available to him.
City had been linked with Roque Santa-Cruz but a recent bid was knocked back
by Hughes' former employers.

City were on the end of a heavy defeat at Villa Park and, whilst Hughes has
built up a decent reputation as a coach there appears to be a lack of depth
within the squad at the moment. Against them we are likely to be unchanged
from the eleven that started against Wigan (unless there are any new
arrivals between the time of writing and kick-off), Dean Ashton's calf
apparently being inconvenienced by little more than cramp. Getting anything
out of this game will depend on our being able to get a good start and
building on it, something we singularly failed to do in the second half last
weekend. This is a difficult one to call as, though we could be considered
fortunate to hold onto all three points last weekend, City's own start to
the season at Villa was wretched and one could quite easily make a decent
case for all three possible results based on the strengths and failings
displayed by either side over the past week or so.

Last season saw us visit Eastlands twice in a few days, a 1-0 cup defeat
being followed up with a 1-1 draw courtesy of Carlton Cole's overhead
effort. We may not see such fireworks this weekend but a similar result is a
distinct possibility so I'll plump for another 1-1 giving us a two match
unbeaten run going into a match against Hughes' former club – who was their
new manager again?

Enjoy the match!

Last season (league): 1-1 (Cole)

Curbs quiet on Ferdinand - SSN
Hammers manager sidesteps Sunderland reports
By James Dall Last updated: 22nd August 2008

West Ham United manager Alan Curbishley insists he wants Anton Ferdinand to
remain at the club. Ferdinand has been strongly linked with a move to
Premier League rivals Sunderland, and skysports.com understands he is
considering an offer from the Black Cats. Curbishley has said that the
England Under 21 international remains in his plans, but refused to confirm
or deny reports of a bid for the defender. "All this week Anton has been
training trying to get himself fit," he told Sky Sports News. "That is as
far as it goes for me. At this moment in time he is a West Ham player. "Yes,
I would like to think [he will be a West Ham player in just over a week's
time]. "No [I don't want to lose him]."

Curbishley: no fallout - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 22nd August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Alan Curbishley has denied rumours of a falling-out between himself and the
club's technical director, Gianluca Nani. One daily newspaper claimed
earlier in the week that the United boss and Nani had crossed swords over
triallist Sebastian Pinto, stating that Curbishley has annoyed the Italian
director after refusing to play the Chilean striker in a specially-arranged
friendly. However Curbishley dismissed the story in today's pre-match press
conference, claiming that it was nonsense. "I do despair sometimes about
what is written about us and I've been saying it for 18 months but it
doesn't seem to make any difference," he said. "If someone had just made a
phone call [they would have know that] the boy played. He came over, he
played on Tuesday for 80 minutes in a reserve game arranged with QPR a week
before for James Collins to play in. We didn't fancy him and he's gone back.
"After the game, me and Nani went to QPR to watch South Africa and Australia
and then I dropped him home, so if we'd had a big row he wouldn't have got
in the car!"

Behrami will be a success, says Hammers boss - Guardian Series
2:58pm Friday 22nd August 2008

ALAN Curbishley is tipping new signing Valon Behrami to take the Premier
League by storm. The versatile right-back is the Hammers' manager's only
major summer acquisition after signing the Swiss international from Lazio
last month. And Curbishley is confident the 23-year-old has all the
necessary qualities to excel in the intense arena of England's Premier
League. "He's got all the attributes for the English game," insisted
Curbishley. "He'll enjoy the intensity of the Premier League. "He's been
thrown in straight away and shown his versatility. "A lot of foreign players
struggle to deal with the pace of the game but Behrami has got what it takes
to succeed."
Behrami can also play on either flank and through central midfield and there
is little doubt that Curbishley will take advantage of that adaptabilty as
he continues his search for reinforcements before the transfer window slams
shut on September 1. "We are looking to add to the squad but getting someone
to say yes is tough," he added.

Hammers boss urges his players to 'get amongst' City - Guardian Series
2:30pm Friday 22nd August 2008

WEST Ham boss Alan Curbishley has urged his players to 'get amongst' Mark
Hughes' Manchester City side and spoil the Welshman's first home game in
charge this Sunday. City go into the game off the back of a 4-2 defeat at
Aston Villa last week, while the Hammers recorded a 2-1 win over Wigan. But
Curbishley does not believe that the respective results will bear any
relevance on Sunday and is bracing himself for a tough test. "We've really
got a game on there," warned the Hammers manager. "They were unlucky against
Villa, it was just a five-minute spell that changed the game but other than
that I thought they played well. "We need to go there and get amongst them
and hopefully get something from the game. "Back to back results at the
start of the season for us would be terrific and would set us up really
well."
Curbishley knows the pressure will be on for Hughes, especially given the
off-field happenings surrounding chairman Thaksin Shinawatra. But he is
backing his counterpart to respond. "There will be pressure on Mark as it's
his first home game, so the expectation will be high," he added. "There's
been some things going on up there with their chairman but that's not down
to Mark. He's been successful before and I can't see that changing."
Curbishley has been given a timely boost ahead of the match with the news
that Dean Ashton has shaken off a niggle and is available for selection.
"Dean is fit and he's ready to play," he confirmed.

Injured Hammers duo named in Wales squad - Guardian Series
2:36pm Friday 22nd August 2008

WALES manager John Toshack has named both James Collins and Craig Bellamy in
his squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and
Russia - despite the pair not having played a competitive match this season.
Collins played 45 minutes of a behind-closed-doors game for West Ham on
Tuesday, having fought back from a knee injury that has kept him out since
January. The defender, who turns 25 on Saturday, earned the last of his 20
caps in a goalless Euro 2008 qualifying draw in Germany last November.
Bellamy, who missed much of last season with stomach and groin muscle
injuries, was struck down with a hamstring strain during a pre-season
friendly at Ipswich earlier this month. The national team captain, now 29,
has scored 15 goals in 49 games for his country. Toshack is preparing for an
opening group match against Azerbaijan in Cardiff on September 6, with a
tough trip to Moscow to face Russia four days later.

Wales squad: Hennessey (Wolves), Myhill (Hull), Price (Derby), Bale
(Tottenham), Collins (West Ham), S Evans (Wrexham), Gunter (Tottenham),
Morgan (Peterborough), Ricketts (Hull), Williams (Swansea), Crofts
(Gillingham), S Davies (Fulham), Edwards (Wolves), Fletcher (Crystal
Palace), Tudur Jones (Swansea), Koumas (Wigan), Ledley (Cardiff), Parry
(Cardiff), Ramsey (Arsenal), Robinson (Toronto), Stock (Doncaster), Bellamy
(West Ham), Cotterill (Sheffield United), Eastwood (Coventry), C Evans
(Manchester City), Vokes (Wolves).

Hammer confident that Ferdinand will stay - Guardian Series
1:39pm Friday 22nd August 2008

HAMMERS boss Alan Curbishley insists Anton Ferdinand will be turning out in
a West Ham shirt next month despite persistent speculation linking with a
move away from Upton Park. The central defender has been touted as
Sunderland manager Roy Keane's latest summer target and reports in Friday's
Sun even suggested that an £8million has been accepted and that a move will
be completed within 24 hours, while there has also been interest from fierce
rivals Tottenham in recent days. However, Curbishley has rubbished those
claims and insists that the 23-year-old is still in his thinking for the
season.
"There has been a lot of speculation (about Ferdinand) but he's definitely a
part of my plans," said Curbishley. "I spoke to him over the summer and he
knows he's in my plans but we'll have to see how things develop. "All Anton
is doing now is focusing on getting fit. Upson and Davenport have been
playing well at the back but with injuries we have Anton is the nearest to
getting back in the team."
Ferdinand dropped down the pecking order last season after a dip in form and
has struggled to establish himself in Curbishley's first team plans,
prompting rumours that he may be sold. Newcastle were early admirers of the
centre-back but north-east rivals Sunderland have since emerged as the
front-runners for his signature. Reports suggest that Ferdinand would be
reluctant to move away from London and a bid from Spurs may yet prove a
tempting offer.

Curbishley dismisses Nani "row" claim - Echo
1:18pm Friday 22nd August 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

WEST Ham United manager Alan Curbishley has angrily quashed speculation that
he has fallen out with the club's new technical director Gianluca Nani.
A national newspaper claimed the Irons boss had had a "row" with Nani, who
joined the the club from Italian club Brescia last month, over the
possibility of signing Chilean striker Sebastian Pinto. The tabloid claimed
Curbishley had refused to play Pinto, nicknamed "The Tank", in a
behind-closed-doors friendly against Queen's Park Rangers on Tuesday. But
today, the manager dismissed the story, explaining that the Santos forward
had completed an unsuccessful 80-minute trial and that his relationship with
Nani was just fine. "I do despair sometimes about what is written about us
and I've been saying it for 18 months but it doesn't seem to make any
difference," said the exasperated manager. "If someone had just made a phone
call (they would have discovered that) the boy played. "He came over, he
played on Tuesday in a reserve game arranged with QPR a week before that for
James Collins to play in. "He played for 80 minutes. "He played, we didn't
fancy it and he's gone back. "After the game, me and Nani went to QPR to
watch South Africa and Australia and then I dropped him home, so if we'd had
a big row he wouldn't have got in the car."
Curbishley went to on explain that a further specially-arranged match could
take place next week to help full-back George McCartney's recovery from a
hamstring injury and a bout of pneumonia. "We had two people playing in that
game aside from the ones coming back from injuries. Bowyer played in it, as
did Quashie," he added. "We're trying to get another one arranged for next
week for (George) McCartney and one or two others."
