Nigeria make Cole call-up blunder - BBC
By Oluwashina Okeleji
BBC Sport, Lagos

In a bizarre move, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has called up an
ineligible player for their forthcoming 2010 World Cup qualifiers. West Ham
United striker Carlton Cole is in the squad for the games against South
Africa in September and Sierra Leone in October. Cole, who has a Nigerian
father and Sierra Leonean mother, has played for England at under-21 level.
But he cannot switch allegiance to Nigeria as he is now 24 years old. Fifa
allows players who have represented one country at junior level to switch to
another country. But the statutes of world football's governing body state
that this can only happen if they are still under the age of 21. Cole, whose
full name is Carlton Cole Okirie, was born in England. In the past, he had
apparently been keen on playing for Nigeria, but he accepted an England
under-21 call-up when he felt he had been overlooked by the Super Eagles.
Another surprise name included in the 20-man squad released by the NFF is
defender Daniel Ola, who holds a Ghanaian passport. The former Lazio and
Chievo player, is now with Italian Serie B club AC Cesena. Newcastle United
striker Obafemi Martins, who missed all four first round qualifiers in June
due to injury, has been recalled. After winning all four of their matches so
far in their group, Nigeria are have already ensured their place in the
second phase of the combined 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations
qualifiers.

Bellamy cleared after fan 'row' - BBC

West Ham have cleared Craig Bellamy over an alleged row with an Ipswich fan
during a friendly on Monday night. The striker was accused of verbally
abusing a fan as he walked along the touchline after being substituted. But
a West Ham spokesman confirmed to BBC Sport on Tuesday that Bellamy has no
case to answer. The Wales captain, 29, will have a scan on Tuesday to assess
the hamstring injury that saw him limp off after just 24 minutes of the game
at Portman Road. He may now miss the start of the season as well as Wales'
friendly clash with Georgia. Bellamy had put the Hammers 2-1 up in the 5-3
win over Ipswich, chipping Richard Wright from 20 yards after just 10
minutes. But after being forced off injured, Bellamy was seen to kick an
advertising board and then appeared to be involved in a verbal exchange as
he left the field. And of immediate concern to Bellamy's club and country
will be how serious his injury is.
Bellamy played just nine games for the Hammers last term in an
injury-ravaged first season at Upton Park which was blighted by abdominal
and groin problems. Only last week, manager Alan Curbishley praised the
51-times capped Welshman after scoring a brace in a 2-0 win over
Peterborough. "He has worked extremely hard to return to full fitness and is
a great asset," said Curbishley. Wales manager John Toshack names his squad
on Friday for the friendly with Georgia at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea on
20 August. Toshack will not want to be without his inspirational captain as
Wales prepare for the start of their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign
against Azerbaijan on 6 September in Cardiff.

International call-up for Cole - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 5th August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Carlton Cole has been called up to the full Nigerian squad for the first
time. The United striker - who scored six goals in 19 appearances for the
England under-21s - had previously rejected the opportunity to play for
Nigeria and Sierra Leone in order to keep his options with England open. But
having never looked close to appearing for the country of his birth, Cole is
set to grab the chance to feature for Nigeria - for whom he is eligible
through his father. Cole is one of four English-based strikers named in the
latest squad by coach Shaibu Amodu, alongside Obafemi Martins (Newcastle),
Yakubu (Everton) and Kanu (Portsmouth). Amodu, talking about his new squad
earlier in the week said: "By and large the list underscores Nigeria's
desire to try new options against the backdrop of the Super Eagles having
already picked a ticket for the third and final phase of qualifying, which
begins in March 2009."

The Super Eagles are set to face South Africa this September in a World Cup
qualifier.

Full Nigerian squad: Ayenugba (Bnei Yehuda), Etafia (Moroka Swallows), Yobo
(Everton), Shittu (Watford), Odiah (CSKA Moscow), Mohammed (Al Hilal), Ola
(Cesena), Nwaneri (FC Sion), Taiwo (Marseille), Olofinjana (Stoke City),
Uche (Almeria), Obi Mikel (Chelsea), Haruna (Monaco), Ayila (Dynamo Kiev);
Okoduwa (Dynamo Kiev), Utaka (Portsmouth), Cole (West Ham), Martins
(Newcastle), Aiyegbeni (Everton), Kanu (Portsmouth).

Bellamy in hot water - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 5th August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Craig Bellamy could have his knuckles rapped later today after becoming
involved in a touchline spat at Ipswich last night. The Welsh striker
exchanged unpleasantries with an Ipswich fan as he left the field after
pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring strain just 24 minutes into
last night's 5-3 win.
TheSun newspaper claimed this morning that Bellamy, who began his career
with Ipswich's local rivals Norwich called a female Town fan a 'f***ing
Ipswich prostitute' as he left the field of play having been heckled by the
home fans. An unnamed spokesman from West Ham said: "We will look into the
facts of what happened. I haven't had a chance to speak to Craig myself. I
was made aware of it after the game, as I was in the players' tunnel. "An
official from Ipswich made me aware something had happened. We take such
allegations seriously. I haven't spoken to anyone to find out what was
allegedly said." Both clubs are said to be investigating the incident whilst
the Police have also been informed.

Curbs excited by strike duo - SSN
Hammers boss tipping duo to shine
Last updated: 5th August 2008

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley says he is looking forward to the strike
partnership of Dean Ashton and Craig Bellamy this season. The Hammers were
unable to call upon the duo last season because of injuries, with both
players starting together only twice. Ashton and Bellamy have impressed in
pre-season together and Curbishley believes it will be an exciting
partnership this term. "I think we didn't have them at all last year, I
think they played together once or twice," Curbishley told Sky Sports News.
"Obviously we are looking forward to that and we hope it brings us quite a
few goals." Curbishley also backed Ashton to become a regular in Fabio
Capello's England side after making his debut in the summer friendly against
Trinidad & Tobago. "He [Ashton] was in the last squad, Capello knows all
about Dean and he has come to Upton Park on quite a few occasions last year.
"So all I think all Dean can do, and some of my other young English players,
is go out there and perform week in, week out and make sure they are
noticed."

Opinion: Football fans are hypocrites when it comes to player abuse - The
Mirror
By Dan Silver 5/08/2008

Reports that police are investigating West Ham striker Craig Bellamy for
allegedly verbally abusing Ipswich games during the clubs' pre-season
friendly last night highlights one of the biggest examples of hypocrisy to
be found in football. Namely that fans are great at dishing out abuse, but
can't take it. Not that I'm condoning players retaliating, of course: the
game's current emphasis on respect has to apply off the pitch as well as on
it. But that said, respect is a two-way street, and football fans that spend
90 minutes giving opposition players dogs' abuse from the stands shouldn't
play the innocent ingénues and go running to the authorities the minute one
of their targets shows a moment of human weakness and answers back.
One of the most shameful exhibitions of this double standard I've personally
witnessed occurred at a QPR vs Barnsley FA Cup tie back in 1997. For reasons
too convoluted to go into here, I was sat just behind the goal in the midst
of the travelling Tyke army, a couple of thousand hardy northern souls, most
of whom spent the entire first half subjecting QPR keeper Tony Roberts to a
pretty much non-stop torrent of abuse. It was all reasonably good natured
until QPR scored, at which point Roberts momentarily forgot himself, turned
to the massed ranks of the away fans and let them know exactly what he
thought of his team taking the lead.
As impressive and impassioned a display of fist pumping and incoherent
shouting as Roberts put on, it still didn't warrant the reaction of those
sat around me. In an instant the brave and bullish Barnsley fans were
transformed, their faces switching from twisted masks of hate to something
resembling a small child who just heard his first swear word. A significant
number of them even tried – unsuccessfully – to report Roberts to the
stewards for incitement.

Now, I wasn't at Portman Road last night, so can't comment on what provoked
Craig Bellamy's alleged reaction, but I'm willing to bet that the fans in
question weren't complementing him on his former exploits for hated local
rivals Norwich City. The witty banter between crowd and players has always
been one of the most enjoyable aspects of watching football, and long may it
continue. But some football supporters need to have a long, hard look at
themselves. If you spend the best part of 90 minutes giving a footballer the
kind of abuse that would likely lead to a full scale barfight if directed at
someone you didn't know in a pub, then you shouldn't go running to the
authorities if they occasionally give something back.

Irons could move for Manchester United striker - Guardian Series

ACCORDING to sources in France, West Ham are preparing a bid for Manchester
United striker Louis Saha. Sunderland have reportedly made an offer for the
Frenchman and it is being suggested that the Hammers may not have the funds
to compete with the Black Cats. However, Alan Curbishley is looking to
bolster his attacking options after letting Bobby Zamora join Fulham this
summer, while the injury-prone Craig Bellamy limped out of the friendly with
Ipswich last night and he may try and swoop for the forward, who turns 30 on
Friday.

MOORE'S NO 6 IS RETIRED - Daily Express
Tuesday August 5,2008
By Nigel Clarke

West Ham will retire the No6 shirt worn by former Upton Park and England
captain Bobby Moore, the Premier League club announced yesterday. Moore, who
died in 1993, is one of the most celebrated names in English football,
having lifted the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 as captain of England's World
Cup-winning team. He was one of three West Ham players in Alf Ramsey's
victorious England team, alongside striker Geoff Hurst and midfielder Martin
Peters.
A statue of the three stands outside the club's stadium. Moore, who was at
West Ham from 1958-74, was the club's most successful captain, lifting the
FA Cup in 1964 and European Cup Winners' Cup the following year. He died
from bowel cancer at the age of 51. West Ham chief executive officer Scott
Duxbury said: "When we were talking about ways to mark 50 years since Bobby
Moore's debut, there was only one true gesture that would do him justice,
retiring the number six shirt he made his own."
Moore made his first appearance for the club aged 17 against Manchester
United in September 1958, and to mark the anniversary West Ham will play
Spanish club Villarreal in a pre-season friendly on Saturday for the
inaugural Bobby Moore Cup. After leaving West Ham, Moore – who won 108
England caps – played for Fulham and American clubs San Antonio Thunder and
Seattle Sounders. Matthew Upson, the England defender who has been wearing
the No6 for West Ham, will take the No15 shirt. Meanwhile, West Ham will
step up their search for another front man after Kieron Dyer suffered a
hairline fracture of the leg he broke last season during training last week.

Craig Bellamy facing inquiry into 'prostitute' slur at Ipswich fans
By Telegraph staff and agencies
Last Updated: 10:45AM BST 05 Aug 2008

Craig Bellamy has been accused of verbally abusing an opposition supporter
during West Ham's friendly against Ipswich Town The Wales international was
accused of getting involved in a row with an Ipswich fan as he walked along
the touchline after being substituted. The striker was seen to kick an
advertising board, after picking up an injury, and then appeared to be
involved in a verbal exchange with supporters near the stadium's family
enclosure.
A West Ham United spokesman said: "We will look into the facts of what
happened. I haven't had a chance to speak to Craig myself. I was made aware
of it after the game, as I was in the players' tunnel. "An official from
Ipswich made me aware something had happened. We take such allegations
seriously. I haven't spoken to anyone to find out what was allegedly said."
According to local reports, Bellamy was said to have sworn at supporters and
made reference to Ipswich prostitutes. In 2006, five prostitutes were the
victims of a serial killer who stalked the area's red light district in
November and December of that year. Deryck Ayers, who was at the game with
his 6-year-old daughter, claimed he was sworn at by Bellamy. The Lowestoft,
Suffolk, resident said: "With him being an ex-Norwich player I shouted 'see
you later Bellamy' and he just turned around and swore at me and he said
something about prostitutes in Ipswich." The lifelong Ipswich fan added: "He
(Bellamy) was not very nice. I was shocked because I had my daughter there
and there were other kids around in the same area."
Michelle Relf-Stables, who was with her 10- and 14-year-old sons at the
game, added: "I was just absolutely gobsmacked - there is just no need to
behave like that. We pay lots of money to come to these games and I do not
expect my sons to hear words like that. "I will take it up with the
football club." West Ham beat the Championship promotion hopefuls 5-3,
thanks largely to a hat-trick from England forward Dean Ashton.

No complaint received by police over Bellamy incident - Echo News
12:49pm Tuesday 5th August 2008

POLICE have not received a formal complaint over an alleged altercation
between West Ham United striker Craig Bellamy and an Ipswich Town fan on
Monday evening. Bellamy was widely reported to have verbally abused a

the first half of West Ham's 5-3 friendly win. However, a Hammers spokesman
and Suffolk police have both said that no complaint has been received. "I
have spoken to the police and they have told me that no complaint has been
received," the club spokesman said. A Suffolk Constabulary spokeswoman
added: "No formal complaints have been received by either Suffolk Police or
Ipswich Town. "However, if any member of the public witnessed an incident at

A forward importance - Cmon Yu Irons

If ever there was any more proof of the need of another high profile
forward, then it's now. During last nights friendly against Ipswich Craig
Bellamy was taken off limping in the first half, leaving Hines to replace
him, and no doubt making many fans wonder if Curbishley is just going to
stick with what he has up front.
At this level this may seem ok for Hines to come on to replace Bellamy, but
he, as with Sears are still learning their trade in the premiership, and
Cole for all his efforts is not a goal merchant. Which leaves us with a
problem, and it's one that Curbs has to address before the season kicks
off…We need another proven forward, not just for starting, but for cover
aswell.

HAMMERS TALK: Toon step up interest in Ferdinand - Guardian Series
8:53am Tuesday 5th August 2008

RUMOURS linking Anton Ferdinand with a move away from West Ham this summer
continue to surface. Aston Villa, Spurs and Newcastle have all been credited
with showing an interest in the 23-year-old. Now recent reports suggest that
Newcastle are stepping up their interest in the defender, who limped out of
the Irons 5-3 friendly win over Ipswich last night. Ferdinand is thought to
have rejected a move to St James's Park last month after the Hammers
accepted a £6million bid. But, although the player has reiterated his desire
to remain at Upton Park, Toon boss Kevin Keegan is eager to snap up the
former England U21 man in a bid to bolster his leaky backline.

Sunderland are monitoring the left back's situation, while Aston Villa and
West Ham are said to be admirers of the defender. Royals chief Steve Coppell
has not divulged the name of the side who tabled the bid, but stressed it
does not match their valuation. "We do not need to sell anyone so I am not
going to give anyone away," said Coppell. "The offer we have had is not one

Hammers taught us a lesson, says Magilton as Ashton puts Blues to the sword
- MyFootballWriter.com
Tues 5 Aug 08

Jim Magilton admitted last night's 5-3 defeat to West Ham was a "steep
learning curve" for a few of his players. While the Blues were able to live
with the Hammers in the first half, Premiership class told in the second as
Dean Ashton completed a hat-trick in what was a fine display of clinical
finishing. It will certainly be a match that 18-year-old defender Tommy
Smith will remember for a long time after the likes of Craig Bellamy, Kyel
Reid and Ashton gave the Ipswich back four the run around all evening. While
Smith undoubtedly has the potential to become a mainstay of the Blues
defence, he showed that he isn't ready to be thrown in against Preston on
Saturday and why Magilton is desperate to land someone of Ivan Campo's
experience. "It was a fantastic lesson for Tommy Smith," said Magilton.
"Bellamy and Ashton's movement was fantastic and they took their chances
really well. "You can't give players of that ability that amount of room in
the box. A Premier League club came here and they did a job on us in the
second half. It's a great learning curve for us all – for the players and
me. "We take it all on board and look forward to Saturday. It was a great
workout for us and we managed to get a lot of players game time again."
In the pre-match build-up Magilton called for his side to adopt a more
cautious approach but this clearly fell on deaf ears with the first period
played like a five-a-side game. It was end to end stuff and, while the
standard of defending wasn't up to much, the attacking flair on view from
both sides made it a pulsating 45 minutes of football. Town should have
actually been ahead at the break after Veliche Shumulikoksi and Owen Garvan
equalised goals from Ashton and Bellamy. The Blues were causing a lot of
problems from set-pieces with Gareth McAuley hitting the woodwork and Kevin
Lisbie heading over from close range. But the second half was a completely
different story as West Ham exerted their superiority and the 5-3 scoreline
flattered the Blues at the final whistle. "It was a bit Jekyll and Hyde – a
bit like us," said Magilton. "In the first half I thought we were excellent
after the first 10 minutes when we looked like a rabbit caught in the
headlights "We were in awe of West Ham coming here and we looked nervy at
the back but once we settled into the game I thought we played some
fantastic stuff. We created a lot of good openings and it was end to end
stuff. "There wasn't much defending going on which is a characteristic of
ours. But in the second half they changed their shape and we didn't really
have the know-how to compete with that. We became a little bit disjointed
and got picked off accordingly."
Magilton knows his side must learn to defend better as a team in the season
ahead. Town might be able to get away with a gung-ho style at Portman Road
but on the road most Championship sides have enough ability to pick them off
and the Blues boss will not want a repeat of last season when he had to wait
until February before registering an away win. Shumulikoski was the Blues
star man last night but showed that he does not consider himself a defensive
central midfielder. Too often both Garvan and the Macedonian vacated the
central area which allowed West Ham so much space to play and they took full
advantage. Campo could be the answer with the Spanish veteran a mainstay of
the Bolton midfield during Sam Allardyce's tenure at the Reebok Stadium and
possessing the tactical discipline that is lacking within the Town ranks at
the moment. "Collectively we've got to defend better but it's about getting
ready for Saturday and there's no better lesson than actually playing the
game," added Magilton. "I'm sure a few of our players will go home tonight
and use that. That's the standard they have to try and attain if they want
to play in the Premier League."
Before last night's contest, Magilton said he knew what his starting XI was
going to be against Preston on Saturday but he admitted there are now a
couple of places up for grabs. Whether Pim Balkestein is quite ready to make
the transition to left back on a full time basis is open to question with
the Dutchman still caught on occasion thinking like a centre half. Alex
Bruce is likely to come in for Smith while Magilton must also decide whether
Tommy Miller or Shumulikoski partners Garvan in central midfield. Kevin
Lisbie and Pablo Counago will start against the Lilywhites as questions
continue to be raised over Alan Lee's long term future at Portman Road.

HAMMERS TALK: Toffees join the chase for Irons striker - Guardian Series
9:22am Tuesday 5th August 2008

EVERTON have reportedly joined the chase for West Ham striker Dean Ashton.
The 24-year-old forward - who bagged a hat-trick in the Irons' 5-3 friendly
win over Ipswich last night - has been linked with a move away from Upton
Park all summer. Manchester United, Spurs, Newcastle and Sunderland have all
been credited with showing an interest in the England man. Now David Moyes -
who is hoping to raise £13million from the sale of Andy Johnson - is
believed to be keen. The Toffees boss sees Ashton as an ideal partner for
Yakubu Aiyegbeni and is ready to splash out as much as £20million to land
his man. However, he will have a fight o his hands to prise the forward away
from east London, after chief executive Scott Duxbury this week insisted the
player is going nowhere.

Hammers join Saha chase - Setanta
by Adam Marshall, 05 August 2008

West Ham have joined the race to sign Manchester United striker Louis Saha,
according to sources in France. Saha has been strongly tipped to link up
with former Red Devils team-mate Roy Keane at Sunderland in the English
press on Tuesday but is thought to be interested in returning to London. The
former Fulham forward has frustrated Sir Alex Ferguson with his injury
battles over the past couple of seasons but remains a top-class centre
forward when fit.
Keane has money to spend and is desperate to buy a new striker with last
season's Kenwyne Jones undergoing surgery on his knee injury. However, West
Ham have injury concerns of their own with Craig Bellamy limping out of the
friendly with Ipswich Town. Alan Curbishley has offloaded Bobby Zamora to
Fulham and would like a new partner for in-form Dean Ashton. Whether The
Hammers can match Sunderland's bid is another matter but if Saha would
rather move to Upton Park a deal could be done, providing it is a permanent
transfer rather than a loan switch, which does not suit United. The Hammers
have added to their ranks with the capture of 17-year-old midfielder Georg
Grasser from Austrian side Grazer AK.

Bellamy's injury is not just 'bad luck' - BubblesInTheAir.com
Tuesday 05 Aug 2008 09:41:44 by Tony Watson

Is it me or does our persistent injury problems go way beyond unlucky?

With the disappointing news that Kieron Dyer is now out injured until
October still fresh in the mind we have had to endure even worse news in my
opinion - now Bellamy looks set to miss the start of the season with a
hamstring injury, £1.5 million in the sun dream team and he seemed a bargain
- well not anymore.

The main reason for optimism towards the new campaign on my part was the
fact I was about to see us at full strength. A fully fit Dean Ashton, Scott
Parker and Craig Bellamy. Three key players in our quest for European
football and they have barely played together as of yet. However, the
optimism was shattered yesterday evening upon hearing the startling news
from Portman Road - Craig Bellamy had to be taken off with a suspected
hamstring injury - just then it sank in - this is not 'bad luck', it is not
some torrid curse - it is the West Ham coaching and medical staff.

Well, it has to be. How else can you account for these unbelievable injury
problems. Sure, last year some of them were impact injuries but there were a
lot of strains and pulled muscles too. This suggest to me the players are
not being prepared properly, that something over Chadwell Heath needs some
serious assessment.

This week we have had 3 new injury worries - Kieron Dyer with a Stress
fracture - this is said to be due to the hard ground - well if that is true
- how ridiculous is that? We have a player who at the moment has cost 31k
per minute he has been on the pitch and the designed rehabilitation
programme for him never took into account that this could happen - this is
rubbish and there is no excuse for it, every eventuality should have been
taken into account - we are aiming to be one of the top clubs in Europe but
this incompetence is just another example of how far behind we are.

Now Craig Bellamy (who has been looking sharp in pre-season) has injured his
hamstring, whether it is a pull, I'm not sure as it has yet to be confirmed.
Now it is so easy to say 'these things happen in football' - yeah they do
but why are they happening so often to us??? It has happened far too often
to just say that and now something needs to be done. Never fear though
people because we have Carlton Cole ready to fill his boots - I feel
deflated. All that coupled with Anton being taken off injured too.

What did YOU witness between the Ipswich fans and West Ham's Craig Bellamy
last night? - sitdownshutup.tv

Being a former Naaaaaaaaawich player, and generally unlikeable guy, Craig
Bellamy was never going to get a standing ovation at Portman Road. Yet
today's papers are full of stories of a "battle" between Craig and the Town
fans. I'm sure this is being hyped up beyond what actually happened.

According to the BBC, "West Ham have launched an investigation after Craig
Bellamy was alleged to have been involved in a row with an Ipswich fan
during a friendly on Monday night. The alleged incident happened as the
29-year-old striker walked along the touchline after being substituted.
Bellamy was seen to kick an advertising board and then appeared to be
involved in a verbal exchange as he left the field with an injury on 24
minutes."

Injured again? Who'd have believed it. A West Ham spokesman said: "We will
look into the facts of what happened. An official from Ipswich made me aware
something had happened. We take such allegations seriously."

It's a shame this petty little tantrum is eclipsing the whole host of highs
and lows that should be being debated after a 5-3 defeat.

action before the England international took control with two more goals in
the second half. The striker had opened the scoring in just the fourth
minute. The home side soon levelled but the Hammers quickly hit back when
Craig Bellamy, who was to be substituted on 23 minutes, raced clear to
finish. Ipswich equalised again before an Ashton brace and a Mark Noble
volley secured the win. Alan Lee pulled another back at the death but the
visitors were out of sight.

Ashton had made a welcome return to the starting lineup after a virus to
renew his partnership with Bellamy that had shown such promise in the early
summer fixtures. Academy product Joe Widdowson got another chance in defence
with new signing Valon Behrami pushed further forward into a right-midfield
role.

The visitors got off to the perfect start when, in the fourth minute,
Behrami won the ball strongly in midfield and his pass allowed Etherington
to race clear down the left-hand side. The winger's cross fell perfectly for
Ashton on the edge of the area and he finished emphatically off the crossbar
with his right foot. It left former Hammer Richard Wright in the Ipswich
goal with no chance. Town hit back in the sixth minute. A neat passing move
allowed Veliche Shumulkoski to get free and he dinked the ball into the far
corner of the net.

Just two minutes later Ipswich attacked again, but this time they could not
find a way past Robert Green. A free-kick from the right allowed Tommy Smith
to get above the Hammers defence. His header was firm but Green was more
than equal to it, diving to his left to brilliantly parry the ball away.
Danny Haynes then tangled with Widdowson in the West Ham United area, but
the referee waved his appeals away.

The visitors were back in front in the tenth minute. Captain Lucas Neil
played a perfect ball over the top of the Ipswich defence to send Bellamy
racing clear. The Welshman finished in style with a lob in the far corner of
the net. Zavon Hines got a chance to continue to his excellent pre-season
form when he came on for Bellamy, who appeared to signal towards his
hamstring.

Ipswich levelled the match in the 25th minute. After Green made another
brave stop, this time from Lisbie, the rebound fell to Owen Garvan, who was
on hand to drive the ball past two defenders on the line. In the 29th minute
after a clever run by Paulo Counago, Neill did well to slide across and
clear the danger. From the resulting corner, Lisbie headed over under
pressure from Green.

The Championship side were certainly fired up for the game and another
attack almost put them in front for the first time. Another ball into the
visitors' box, this time from Quinn, found Gareth McAuley, whose header hit
the outside of Green's left-hand post. The visitors were not to be
out-gunned though. After a nice passing move, Behrami broke down the right
but the Swiss international's teasing ball was just too far in front of the
on-rushing Ashton.

After Anton Ferdinand went off for Calum Davenport just before half-time
following a kick, Kyel Reid came on for Etherington at the interval. Just
five minutes later a bursting run from Noble followed by a deft back heel
from Hines nearly put the midfielder in. Behrami was certainly capitalising
on his more advanced role and his ball in from the right nearly fell for
Hines.

The visitors took the lead again in the 56th minute when Neill burst into
the area and his cut back allowed Reid to shoot. His effort was blocked but
the ball fell kindly to Ashton and he made no mistake by finishing with a
low drive into the bottom left-hand corner.

After a fine evening's work, Green made way for young prospect Marek Stech
on the hour, but it was the other end of the pitch that the action was
happening as Ashton knocked down a long ball for Noble - the youngster's
snap-shot sailing just over. Hayden Mullins then got another pre-season run
out when he came on for the hard-working Behrami in the 63rd minute.

Ashton then completed his striking masterclass in the 73rd minute. Reid
broke free down the left and his ball into the box was perfect. The
returning striker made no mistake, taking it first time and slotting into
the bottom right-hand corner. Noble added a fifth with a sublime volley from
the edge of the area five minutes later; his muted celebrations in respect
of his loan spell at Portman Road. Substitute Alan Lee added a late third
for the hosts, but it was too little, too late.

Final score: 3-5

89min - GOAL! - Lee heads in another for Ipswich.

85min - West Ham United have really stepped up a gear in this second half
and the passing play will really have pleased Alan Curbishley.

83min - Ashton gets a great reception from the travelling support as he
makes way for Junior Stanislas.

82min - Ipswich have changed Quinn for Liam Trotter while Jamie Peters is on
for Haynes.

78min - GOAL! - Noble smashes one in from fully 25 yards. Parker and Reid
had a big hand in that goal, with several passes in the build-up before the
ball found its way to the 21-year-old outside the area.

77min - The West Ham United fans are in good voice as the players stroke the
ball around confidently.

75min - Garvan is off for Tommy Miller. Jordan Rhodes appears for Counago.

74min - Ashton's hat-trick makes it six in his last three appearances,
including two in the MLS All-Star Game and one against Columbus Crew.

73min - GOAL! - Another superb strike from Ashton. It was a sweeping forward
move that involved several players before Reid played in a lovely low cross
from the left. Ashton connected well and again gave Wright no chance.

72min - West Ham United are keeping possession well. Stech has not had to
make a save yet.

69min - Reid is playing wide left with Hines wide right and Ashton through
the middle. Mullins is holding with Parker and Noble just in front.

65min - Ipswich have brought on Alan Lee and Alex Bruce for Lisbie and Pim
Balkestein respectively. Ashton fizzes one over, he wants his hat-trick.

64min - Davenport weighs in with a good tackle before, up the other end,
Noble surges forward again before being fouled. West Ham United are growing
stronger in this game. Ashton just goes close from the resulting free-kick.

63min - Hayden Mullins is on for Behrami.

61min - Good link up play between Ashton and Noble finishes with the No16
just firing over from outside the box.

60min - Robert Green goes off to be replaced by Marek Stech.

57min - GOAL! - Ashton smashes one in low beyond the despairing Wright. It
all came about after strong running by Neill up from right-back before a
good pass into the box. When Kyel Reid's shot on goal was blocked, the ball
fell to Ashton who made no mistake from ten yards.

56min - Behrami crosses for Hines, who turns on the ball but is just crowded
out as he tried to shoot.

53min - Alan Quinn gets a chance to shoot but Parker throws himself in the
way. McAuley meets the corner but is again off target.

51min - Noble does brilliantly to deceive two players before forcing his way
into the box. A one-two with Hines almost comes off before he is stopped in
his tracks.

49min - Ashton's flick nearly found Hines but the ball ran through to
Richard Wright.

48min - The second half has not continued at the same pace of the first
half. Neither team has found their feet yet.

46min - Kyel Reid is on for Etherington.

HALF-TIME

45min - Noble tries a raking pass to Behrami but it is just too long. We are
playing two minutes of added time.

41min - Behrami is just inchies away from his first West Ham United goal.
His shot whistles past the post.

40min - McAuley hits the outside of Green's left-hand post after a deep
cross.

39min - Ferdinand is coming off with Calum Davenport replacing him.

37min - A great saving tackle by Upson denies Lisbie. Ipswich are enjoying
the better of it at the moment. Lisbie again goes through but this time
Green saves.

34min - Haynes races away on the counterattack but his long cross is
comfortably dealt with by Green.

31min - Corner to Ipswich. McAuley rises again but cannot direct his header
on target.

28min - Neill does well after Pablo Counago got around Upson. Ipswich are
pressing hard.

25min - GOAL! - Ipswich level matters through Garvan. Green had saved the
first shot on goal but could do nothing about the rebound.

24min - Bellamy has been taken off. He had waved to the bench to be replaced
after chasing a ball forward. Zavon Hines has come on in his place.

20min - Another great save from Green, this time from a header by Gareth
McAuley, the Ipswich captain. The No1 is in sparkling form.

19min - Haynes snatches at a shot which is deflected wide for a corner. This
time Upson heads away.

18min - Etherington does well to help out Widdowson after Danny Haynes
surged forawrd on the right. The play is switched to the other side but this
time it is Bellamy back to do some defending. Corner to Ipswich, which
Parker clears.

16min - A sweeping passing move involving virtually every player ends when
Matthew Upson's pass goes astray. Ipswich counter quickly but Neill shows
good composure to chest a threatening cross back to Green.

13min - Scott Parker and Mark Noble are working hard in midfield but Ipswich
are giving as good as they get. It is a lively contest that has not let up
from the first minute.

10min - GOAL! - Bellamy scores with a fantastic chipped effort from 20 yards
after a tremendous long pass by Neill set him free from the Ipswich defence.
Richard Wright came out to close but could do nothing about it.

8min - A superb one-handed save by Green denies Tommy Smith after he was
picked out by Veliche Shumlikoski.

6min - GOAL! - Veliche Shumlikoski levels matters after a neat forward move.
The unlucky Joe Widdowson thought he had cut out the danger with a good
tackle but Garvan won possession again, played a neat one-two, and then
lifted the ball over Green from eight yards out.

4min - GOAL! - Ashton fires in an unstoppable shot from the right of the
penalty area that crashed in off the crossbar and gave Richard Wright no
chance. It came after Matthew Etherington's left-wing cross but it all began
with a great Behrami tackle in midfield.

2min - Valon Behrami does well to dispossess Kevin Lisbie. The new recruit
has started on the right side of midfield, ahead of Lucas Neill.

1min - Craig Bellamy and Dean Ashton get us under way.

Bellamy limps off during friendly - BBC

Wales captain Craig Bellamy limped out of Monday's pre-season friendly with
Ipswich after just 24 minutes. Bellamy, 29, had put the Hammers 2-1 up in
the game after 10 minutes chipping Richard Wright from 20 yards. But he
waved to the bench to be replaced after chasing a ball forward soon after.
The news will be a blow to Wales manager John Toshack who names his side for
the 20 August friendly against Georgia on Friday. Bellamy played just nine
games for West Ham last term in an injury-ravaged first season at Upton Park
which was blighted by abdominal and groin problems. Only last week, manager
Alan Curbishley praised the 51-times capped Welshman after scoring a brace
in a 2-0 win over Peterborough. "He has worked extremely hard to return to
full fitness and is a great asset," said Curbishley.

Ipswich 3 West Ham Utd 5 - KUMB

A Dean Ashton hat-trick was the highlight of a great performance by the
Hammers as they returned to winning ways at Portman Road tonight.

However the victory was marred by the loss of Craig Bellamy and Anton
Ferdinand to injury in the first half - particularly so for the Welsh
striker who appeared to pull a hamstring, an injury that could see him miss
the start of the 2008/09 season.

The Hammers started the goal rush after just four minutes through Dean
Ashton who opened his account for the evening when his fierce drive cannoned
off former Hammer Richard Wright's crossbar before finding the net.

However the lead was to last just two minutes when, as happened twice
against the MLS AllStars the United defence fell asleep allowing Veliche
Shumulikoski to beat Rob Green after completing a clever one-two on the edge
of the Hammers box.

Just four minutes later United found themselves back in front when a through
ball from Lucas Neill gave Craig Bellamy the opportunity to chip Wright from
all of 25 yards. However Bellamy's night was to end prematurely after just
24 minutes when he went down clutching his thigh after pulling up when
chasing another through ball.

Ipswich levellled the scores for a second time a minute after Bellamy's
substitution (for Zavon Hines) when Owen Garvan finished a spilled Rob Green
save. The half ended with Alan Curbishley forced into a second substitution
when Anton Ferdinand was replaced by Calum Davenport.

The Hammers were first to strike after the break when Ashton notched his
second of the night on 57 minutes. A Kyel Reid shot was spilled by Wright,
and Ashton made no mistake finishing from close range.

Marek Stech and Hayden Mullins were introduced for Rob Green and Valon
Behrami respectively before the Hammers put the game beyond their hosts 18
minutes from time. Once again Reid was involved; this time it was his cross
that Ashton pounced on to record his third of the night.

With the game all wrapped up United began to play the ball around with much
greater confidence and it was no surprise when Mark Noble added a fifth goal
12 minutes from the end. The 21-year-old midfielder just about edged
Ashton's opener for goal of the game when he lashed home a 25-yard strike
that gave the Ipswich keeper no chance.

The eighth and final goal of the evening went to the Championship side when
Alan Lee restored respectability a minute from time. The result will no
doubt have pleased Alan Curbishley - although the injuries to Bellamy and
Ferdinand will be of rather more concern come tomorrow morning.

West Ham United: Green (Stech 60), Neill, Ferdinand (Davenport 39), Upson,
Widdowson, Behrami (Mullins 62), Noble, Parker, Etherington (Reid 46),
Bellamy (Hines 23), Ashton (Stanislas 82).

Ipswich Town: R.Wright, D.Wright, McAuley, Smith (Naylor 90), Balkestein
(Bruce 65), Haynes (Peters 81), Shumulikoski, Garvan (Miller 75), Quinn
(Trotter 81), Lisbie (Lee 65), Counago (Rhodes 75).

Attendance: 17, 223.

Bellamy in new injury scare - KUMB
Filed: Monday, 4th August 2008
By: Staff Writer

Craig Bellamy could miss the start of the 2008/09 season after sustaining an
injury in the first half of tonight's pre-season friendly at Ipswich. The
United striker, who has only recently returned to full fitness after missing
much of last season pulled up during a run with what appeared to be a
hamstring injury just 24 minutes into the game. He was immediately replaced
by Zavon Hines as worried United officials looked on. There was more bad
news for Alan Curbishley later in the half when Anton Ferdinand was
substituted with six minutes of the half remaining - although his
replacement appeared to be precautionary. Calum Davenport, who scored for
the Hammers at Southampton last week took his place.

Bellamy accused of swearing at fan
Last updated: 5th August 2008

West Ham are investigating claims that Craig Bellamy verbally abused an
opposition fan during Monday night's friendly at Ipswich. Bellamy was said
to have been involved in a row with an Ipswich supporter during the clash at
Portman Road. The alleged incident happened as Bellamy walked along the
touchline after being substituted on 22 minutes. The striker was seen to
kick an advertising board, after picking up an injury, and then appeared to
be involved in a verbal exchange with supporters near the stadium's family
enclosure. A West Ham United spokesman said: "We will look into the facts of
what happened. "I haven't had a chance to speak to Craig myself. I was made
aware of it after the game, as I was in the players' tunnel. "An official
from Ipswich made me aware something had happened. "We take such allegations
seriously. I haven't spoken to anyone to find out what was allegedly said."
The Hammers beat Ipswich 5-3, thanks to a hat-trick from England forward
Dean Ashton.

Bellamy worry for Hammers - SSN
Welsh striker limps off
Last updated: 4th August 2008

West Ham again have a worry over Craig Bellamy after he was forced off in
their friendly win at Ipswich. Bellamy has only recently returned to full
fitness after injury ruined his first season with The Hammers. Bellamy
managed just nine games for the club last season but he has looked in fine
form during pre-season. He scored twice at Peterborough and chipped home
wonderfully at Portman Road before he was forced off just 20 minutes in. He
looked to have hurt his hamstring as he signalled to the bench he wanted to
come off, as he pulled up when trying to run for a ball. Hammers boss Alan
Curbishley will now be anxiously awaiting for news on Bellamy, after only
recently losing Kieron Dyer for an extended period. Also at Ipswich, Anton
Ferdinand was forced off just before half-time and it remains to be seen
whether he has done anything serious or not.

Ashton treble inspires Hammers - SSN
England star bags hat-trick
Last updated: 4th August 2008

An action-packed encounter at Portman Road saw West Ham win an eight-goal
thriller against Ipswich. England striker Dean Ashton was the star of the
show as he claimed a hat-trick for The Hammers. Ashton opened the scoring
after just four minutes when he smashed home from the edge of the box after
good work from Matthew Etherington. The lead lasted just a couple of minutes
though as Town levelled through Veliche Shumlikoski, but West Ham were soon
back in the lead as Craig Bellamy scored with a sublime chip after being
sent clear by Lucas Neill. That was the last action for Bellamy - who ten
minutes later was forced off with what looked like a hamstring injury.
While West Ham re-organised their side Ipswich levelled as Owen Garvan
slotted home after Robert Green saved his initial effort. Ashton restored
West Ham's lead and grabbed his second on the hour. He picked up on a
rebound form Kyel Reid's shot and powered the ball home. 17 minutes from
time and Ashton wrapped up his treble with Reid involved again. The young
midfielder swept a cross into the box and Ashton met the ball first-time to
beat Wright once more. West Ham claimed a fifth on 78 minutes with Mark
Noble firing home a spectacular strike from 25-yards. Ipswich's Alan Lee
completed the scoring as he headed home with just a minute left on the
clock.

Hammers make Moore shirt gesture - BBC

West Ham are to retire the number six shirt to mark the 50th anniversary of
Bobby Moore's debut for the club. Moore played for the club from 1958-74,
and was the club's most successful captain, lifting the FA Cup in 1964 and
European Cup Winners' Cup a year later. He also led England to the 1966
World Cup before dying from cancer in 1993. The shirt will be worn for the
last time in a memorial game on Saturday. The current number six, Matthew
Upson, will then change to wearing number 15. Moore, the greatest player in
West Ham history, made his first appearance for the Hammers aged 17 against
Manchester United in September 1958. "When we were talking about ways to
mark 50 years since his debut, there was only one true gesture that would do
him justice - retiring the number six shirt he made his own," said chief
executive officer Scott Duxbury. The stand at the south end of Upton Park is
already named in Moore's honour, and there are statues of him outside the
ground and Wembley Stadium.

The shirt will be worn for the last time on Saturday by incumbent Matthew
Upson in the inaugural Bobby Moore Cup game against Villarreal, almost 50
years after the defender made his League debut for the club. In addition to
leading England to World Cup success in 1966, Moore also won the FA Cup and
European Cup-Winners' Cup. He died in 1993 from cancer at the age of just
51. The game against the Spaniards marks a three-year partnership with the
Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK and £1 from every ticket will go to
the charity, with West Ham matching the final amount. Moore's widow,
Stephanie, said: "The legendary No 6 shirt is synonymous with Bobby and his
illustrious career. Its retirement signifies deep respect, affection and
admiration for all that Bobby achieved." Upson will switch to the No 15
shirt this season.

Hammers win eight-goal thriller with Town, but Bellamy limps out - Guardian
Series
9:38pm Monday 4th August 2008
Ipswich 3 West Ham 5

DEAN ASHTON helped himself to a hat-trick in a thrilling win over Ipswich
Town tonight - but the game was overshadowed by another injury setback to
Craig Bellamy. The pacy striker - who was restricted to just eight
appearances last season - left the Portman Road field after just 22 minutes
clutching his hamstring. Boss Alan Curbishley already has a host of players
on the sidelines but it will be the biggest blow of all if, as expected, the
27-year-old Welshman is out of the Irons league opener with Wigan on
Saturday week. For 20-odd minutes of an action-packed first half against the
Tractor Boys, Bellamy looked sharp, decisive, and added a fifth pre-season
goal in as many games. His strike on ten minutes - which put Hammers back in
front - was brilliant, the forward lacthing onto Lucas Neill's deep pass
before superbly lobbing over the onrushing Richard Wright. His partnership
with Ashton also appeared to be bearing fruit. Indeed it was Ashton who had
given the Hammers a fourth minute lead, taking a touch on Matty
Etherington's cross before firing in-off the crossbar. The lead lasted just
two minutes. Great play between Veliche Shumulikoski and Pablo Counago put
the former in on goal, and the midfielder finished with a delicate chip over
Robert Green into the net. Bellamy's withdrawal changed the Hammers shape
and clearly on the back foot and moments later and Ipswich were back on
level terms, Owen Garvan firing through a melee of legs and into the net. It
was no more than the hosts deserved. The Championship outfit were slicker in
the pass and more mobile throughout the team. Kevin Lisbie somehow glanced a
header over the crossbar from on the goalline, and then saw his close range
effort well parried by Green as the Tractor Boys got on top.
Captain Gareth MacAuley then headed Alan Quinn's deep cross against the
outside of the post before the half was out. The second half was typically
less enthralling with the Premier League side, perhaps eniviatably, getting
on top. And it showed on 57 minutes when Ashton reaffirmed the Hammers
advantage. Neill was persistent with a run into the box and the ball worked
its way out to Ashton. The England man had time and space to ram home into
the bottom corner. Ashton then grabbed his treble on 73 minutes, sliding in
to turn home Kyel Reid's low cross. Mark Noble grabbed a fifth on 79 minutes
with a tremendous first-time shot from the edge of the box into the bottom
corner. Ipswich's Alan Lee grabbed a late consolation for the hosts, beating
Marek Stech in the air to head home. But the young Hammers keeper made
amends a minute later, thwarting Jamie Peters when clean through on goal.

West Ham: Green (Stech 60), Neill, Widdowson, Upson, Ferdinand (Davenport
38), Behrami (Mullins 63), Etherington (Reid 45), Parker, Noble, Bellamy
(Hines 22), Ashton (Stanislas 81). Subs: Spence, Collison, Stokes.

Ipswich 3-5 West Ham: Cops to quiz Craig Bellamy after bust-up - The Mirror
By Daily Mirror Sport 5/08/2008

West Ham striker Craig Bellamy is at the centre of a police inquiry after a
foul-mouthed bust-up with a female fan during last night's 5-3 friendly win
at Ipswich. Bellamy was substituted with a leg injury halfway through the
first half and, as he limped off, the £7million star became embroiled in a
war of words. The fan instantly reported the player's outburst to a nearby
police officer. Suffolk police spokesman Mark Norman said: "Officials of
Ipswich and West Ham are both aware that an incident has taken place." It
overshadowed a thrilling night of football at Portman Road. Dean Ashton
scored a hat-trick, with Bellamy and Mark Noble also netting for the
visitors in front of 17,223 fans.

Ipswich and manager Alan Curbishley has admitted he is concerned by the
latest setback. "It is too early to say what the extent of the injury is,"
Curbishley told The Sun following the 5-3 win. "We took him off as a
precaution - hopefully before the injury became too serious. "We will assess
him tomorrow (Tuesday)." The suspected hamstring strain was not the only
problem for Bellamy, who was reported to have become involved in a verbal
exchange with a fan at Portman Road following his substitution.

Bellamy and Ferdinand crocked in Ipswich victory - Echo
9:44pm Monday 4th August 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

NO matter how many new medical staff you employ or boffins you hire, it
appears nothing can put an end to West Ham United's injury epidemic. With
eight first team players already on the sidelines, the last thing the Irons
could afford in last night's roller-coaster 5-3 friendly win at Ipswich Town
was two more regulars to get crocked. Unfortunately for manager Alan
Curbishley, that is exactly what happened as Craig Bellamy shuffled off with
a pulled hamstring and Anton Ferdinand suffered a knock to his right leg.
This summer, the Hammers have employed a new chief medical officer and
physiotherapists and commissioned an in-depth study by experts from
Roehampton University to avoid such mishaps. But it appears that despite the
club's various remedial actions, Curbishley's players are going to keep
dropping like flies. The injuries over-shadowed a fine hat-trick from
ex-Norwich City front-man Dean Ashton, who returned from illness to silence
the home boo-boys to make it six goals in his last three pre-season games.
Bellamy looks almost certain to miss the start of the Premier League season
on August 16, while Ferdinand's injury leaves the Hammers with just two fit
natural centre backs in Matthew Upson and Calum Davenport – a player who did
not make a single first team appearance last season.
A thoroughly entertaining game at Portman Road produced eight goals and
plenty of exciting, attractive football. Having fallen behind to a fierce
Ashton strike after just 184 second, the Tractor Boys repeatedly ploughed
their way through the visiting defence in the opening half. Ipswich were
deservedly level within two minutes, Veliche Shumulikoski neatly swapping
passes with Pablo Counago before clipping over Robert Green. Green saved
well from Tommy Smith's downward header a minute later before West Ham went
ahead again – Bellamy racing on to Lucas Neill's pass before lobbing
ex-Hammer Richard Wright for his fifth pre-season goal. Just three minutes
after the Wales captain had disappeared down the tunnel, Ipswich equalised a
second time through Ireland international Owen Garvan. Kevin Lisbie, twice,
and Gareth McAuley then both went close to giving the home side the lead
before the break. Curbishley called on six substitutes after the interval,
but that did not prevent Ashton from completing his treble with two
opportunist strikes on 57 and 73 minutes. Former Town loanee Mark Noble
added a fifth with 11 minutes remaining, volleying home superbly from 20
yards before Alan Lee grabbed an 88th minute consolation.

Ipswich defeated in Hammers friendly - EADT24
04 August 2008 | 22:41
DEREK DAVIS
Ipswich Town 3 West Ham 5

THE good the bad and the downright ugly, were on display at Portman Road
last night. The good from Town's point of view was their explosive goal
power that caps an exciting flow of chances created from all over. The bad
was the woeful defending, stemming not just from the back alone, but
throughout which allowed Dean Ashton to bag a hat-trick. And the ugly came,
not just because two ex-Canaries scored, but in the form of arch-villain
Craig Bellamy whose ill-chosen words towards a lady in the family area as he
went of injured, did not do him, his club or profession, any favours,
especially on the day the Respect campaign was launched by the Football
League. The after effects of that will no doubt follow, more pressingly for
Town boss Jim Magilton is how to stop leaking goals. After the Brighton game
a week ago Magilton spoke of how he was happy with the way his team played
with the ball but was still concerned about the defensive qualities all
through the team, and warned it could be their downfall if they didn't
tighten up. The problems are rarely highlighted at home but against West
Brom, and even more so last night against West Ham, they became glaringly
obvious. It took former Norwich City striker Dean Ashton less than four
minutes to put the Hammers ahead when the Town defence was hopelessly
exposed by the Hammers' neat passing.
When no-one closed down, Tommy Smith allowed a cross to run to the wide open
Ashton and with Pim Balkestein not tucking in to cover, a harsh lesson was
handed out to all concerned as Ashton lashed the ball home. But Town can
always find the net and the speed and movement of their attack is as good as
the Championship will see this coming season. Although working together for
the first time in a game the Kevin Lisbie, Pablo Counago partnership looked
superb. Town equalised two minutes later when Pablo Counago sparked a Blues
break and Kevin Lisbie's pace created space. Veliche Shumulikoski played a
one-two with Counago and dinked the ball cleverly over England hopeful
Robert Green. The inadequacies at the back were highlighted once again when
Craig Bellamy, another ex-Norwich forward, sped clear onto a Lucas Neill
long ball and beat Richard Wright well a well-weighted lob. But the
positives were accentuated for Town in the 25th minute when Green saved a
close range shot from the lively Lisbie but Garvan cleverly found a gap with
a low shot and he too was able to celebrate a new deal. So the ying and yang
continued.
Danny Haynes went looking for a penalty but got nothing. Gareth McAuley
header against a post and then another nod down from corner squirmed wide.
Richard Wright watched as Valon Behrami shot low across his goal as Town
looked good with the ball, bad without. The ugly bit came in the 22nd minute
as Bellamy pulled up chasing a long ball and after kicking a hoarding walked
up the touchline into the dressing room clearly in distress with a sore
hamstring, but not before hurling abuse at Town fans. He was followed six
minutes before the break by Anton Ferdinand, also complaining of a hamstring
problem. Ipswich failed to clear their lines again 11 minutes after the
break and an unmarked Ashton gleefully accepted his gift to score from 10
yards.
The Norwich ex England striker completed his hat-trick when he got away from
McAuley to meet a low Kyel Reid cross and direct goal-wards. Still Town
fans will take comfort that an ex-player of theirs in Darren Bent who got
four in the 5-1 win over Norwich a couple of weeks ago. Mark Noble rubbed
salt in the wound for the Blues though with a stunning 25-yard drive to make
it five for West Ham, and after being such a popular loanee at Portman Road
two years ago. Substitute Alan Lee got a late consolation with some help
from Liam Trotter and Jaime Peter raised hopes but a hefty touch allowed the
keeper to save.

Ipswich Town: R Wright, D Wright, Balkestein (Bruce, 65) McAuley, Smith
(Naylor, 88) Shumulikoski, Haynes (Peters, 81) Garvan (Miller, 77) Counago
(Rhodes, 77) Lisbie (Lee, 65) Quinn (Trotter, 81). Subs not used: Supple,

West Ham: Green (Stech, 60) Neill, Widdowson, Ferdinand (Davenport, 39)
Upson, Behrami (Mullins, 73) Parker, Ashton (Stanislas, 83) Bellamy (Hines,
22) Etherington (Reid, 46) Noble. Subs not used: Stokes, Collison, Spence.

Hells Bells - More Agony - The Sun
By MEL HENDERSON

CRAIG BELLAMY was back in the wars last night. The controversial West Ham
striker limped off in a friendly at Ipswich with yet another injury.
And he was then involved in an incident with fans as he walked down the
touchline. Bellamy was alleged to have sworn at a fan although no official
complaint was made. Both clubs are investigating and police were made aware.
Bellamy's suspected hamstring injury is the latest blow for West Ham boss
Alan Curbishley after midfielder Kieron Dyer suffered a setback in his
recovery from a broken leg. Curbs said last night: "It is too early to say
what the extent of the injury is. "We took him off as a precaution —
hopefully before the injury got too serious. We will assess him tomorrow."
Bellamy suffered an injury-plagued season last term and underwent a stomach
operation in February. At least Curbs was boosted by a hat-trick from Dean
Ashton. The England hitman opened the scoring in the third minute. but
Ipswich replied through Veliche Shumulikoski. Bellamy, 29, found himself a
target for the Ipswich boo-boys as he launched his career at arch-rivals
Norwich. The Welshman gave the perfect response by beating the offside trap
and lifting the ball over Richard Wright to make it 2-1. But disaster struck
when he got crocked minutes later. Owen Garvan then celebrated his bumper
new three-year deal at Portman Road by stroking in the second equaliser. But
Ashton netted again before the break to make it 3-2. The former Crewe man
looked every inch an England centre-forward as he won nearly everything in
the air and showed impressive shooting before clinching his treble. Former
Ipswich loanee Mark Noble sealed victory when he fired home from 25 yards.
Striker Alan Lee bundled in an 89th-minute consolation for the Tractor Boys.

Newcastle United want £7million Ferdinand - FansFC.com
06:43 August, 5, 2008

Newcastle United want to bolster their back four with Anton Ferdinand. The
England Under-21 international has been linked with an exit from West Ham
United this summer, with Alan Curbishley said to be willing to listen to
offers for the player. And it is being reported that Kevin Keegan has
earmarked the central defender for a move to St James Park, as he looks to
solve the Magpies defensive problems. Although Ferdinand has now voiced his
desire to quit the Londoners, he may fancy a move to United as he looks to
finally force his way into Fabio Capello's England plans.

West Ham striker Bellamy suffers injury
tribalfootball.com - August 04, 2008

England striker Dean Ashton fired a hat-trick but Craig Bellamy limped off
as West Ham beat Ipswich 5-3 at Portman Road. The opening 10 minutes were a
goal frenzy, as Ashton and Bellamy scored to give the visitors a 2-1 lead -
Veliche Shumulikoski on target for Town. Owen Garvan levelled for the home
side in the 25th minute, but the Hammers went 3-2 up 12 minutes into the
second half when Ashton fired home after a Kyel Reid shot was blocked. The
former Crewe and Norwich forward completed his hat-trick in the 73rd minute
thanks to a calm finish from a Reid cross. Reid then combined with Scott
Parker to tee up David Noble, who blasted home West Ham's fifth from 25
yards - before Alan Lee pulled one back for Town. Hammers boss Alan
Curbishley will be worried through after Bellamy limped off with a hamstring
injury while Anton Ferdinand suffered a blow to his right leg.

Club to retire No6 shirt - WHUFC
This weekend's match against Villarreal will see West Ham United honour
Bobby Moore's lasting legacy
04.08.2008

West Ham United will retire the No6 shirt with this Saturday's inaugural
match for the Bobby Moore Cup against Spanish giants Villarreal at the
Boleyn Ground.

It is 50 years since the club legend made his debut in a 3-2 home win
against Manchester United on Monday 8 September 1958. As such, it was felt
the time was right to permanently honour his contribution and lasting
legacy. The decision was taken after close consultation with Bobby's widow
Stephanie Moore, current No6 Matthew Upson, the England defender who will
become the last player to wear the number, and the Premier League.

A billboard in the corner of the stadium will also feature a permanent No6
this season to remind of the significance of the half-century since a
17-year-old Moore broke into the first team. The rest is history. He went on
to captain the club to success in the 1964 FA Cup and the 1965 European Cup
Winners' Cup before finally leaving in 1974.

The 9 August match also marks a new three-year partnership agreement with
the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, which was announced last month.
The club is proud to already have a long-standing association with the
charity, which works tirelessly to raise money for research into bowel
cancer.

It was founded by Stephanie Moore, in partnership with Cancer Research UK
(Registered Charity No. 1089464), after his tragic death from the disease
aged just 51 in 1993. To commemorate the new partnership, £1 from the sale
of every match ticket will go to the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK
to help tackle bowel cancer. In addition, West Ham United will match each £1
raised to double the total amount donated to the charity.

This initiative follows on from a number of events last season, including
the dedication of the home match against Newcastle United in his honour and
the end of season championship staged at the stadium. With the new
partnership, the Fund will have even stronger ties.

Stephanie Moore, of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research, said: "The
legendary No6 shirt is synonymous with Bobby and his triumphant and
illustrious footballing career. It's retirement signifies deep respect,
affection and admiration for all that Bobby achieved and all that he
represented in this marvellous game of ours. Thank you, West Ham."

West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "When we were talking about ways to
mark 50 years since Bobby Moore's debut, there was only one true gesture
that would do him justice - retiring the No6 shirt he made his own. With the
launching of the Bobby Moore Cup and the partnership with the fund in his
name as well, he will be a part of this club for generations to come.
Whenever fans think of West Ham United, they will think of Bobby Moore."

West Ham United manager Alan Curbishley said: "It is a fitting tribute to
the greatest West Ham player ever and the decision to retire the Bobby Moore
No6 shirt shows the esteem to which Bobby is held at the club.

"I first met Bobby as a 14-year-old being invited into the club during the
summer holidays by Ron Greenwood to join in the pre-season training. I have
fond memories of Bobby Moore as a person because of those times. He was the
sort of person who had time for anybody. That was a great part of his
personality. As a 14-year-old I had numerous conversations during the six
weeks which helped me progress as a young player."

West Ham United defender Matthew Upson, who will wear the No15 shirt after
Saturday's game, said: "I think it's a fitting contribution by the club to
retire the No6 shirt in tribute to Bobby Moore. I am honoured to be the last
player to wear the No6. I will miss it, but I am glad that is being retired
in honour of such a fantastic player and a true club legend."

Lastuvka to sign on loan - WHUFC
Alan Curbishley is set to have Czech goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka as part of his
options for the new season
04.08.2008

West Ham United have agreed to sign the 26-year-old Czech goalkeeper Jan
Lastuvka on a one-year loan from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk.

The experienced performer completed his medical over the weekend before
finalising his switch. Lastuvka will join two compatriots - the highly-rated
18-year-old, and fellow shot-stopper Marek Stech, and goalkeeping coach
Ludek Miklosko, at the Boleyn Ground. A former Under-21 international,
Lastuvka spent four years at Miklosko's former club Banik Ostrava, including
winning the Czech title in the 2003/04 season, before moving to Ukrainian
football.

Lastuvka, who will wear the No24 shirt, will compete with Robert Green,
Jimmy Walker and Stech, who after agreeing a five-year contract recently is
set to be a regular in first-team pre-season action this summer. He
previously spent one season on loan from Shakhtar to Fulham, making eight
top-flight appearances in the 2006/07 campaign, before 25 Bundesliga games
on a similar temporary arrangement with VfL Bochum last season.

Alan Curbishley believed the new arrival would have a positive impact on the
squad, after recommendation by Miklosko. "Ludo is very keen," he said. "I
think he feels that we will have a group of goalkeepers that work ever so
hard in training and will be pushing and forcing each other to produce the
performances."

Miklosko said: "Jan will be a very good addition to the club. We needed an
experienced goalkeeper who, alongside Jimmy Walker, will be back-up for
Robert Green. I know of Jan from when he played for the Czech Republic
Under-21's and have known him for a few years now. He is an experienced
goalkeeper and it is great for us to have him here. We are looking forward
to working with him at West Ham and have him join what is a great group of
goalkeepers."

Meanwhile, West Ham United have also acquired the services of 17-year-old
Austrian midfielder Georg Grasser from Grazer AK, who will be a part of Tony
Carr's youth-team set-up for the new campaign. The club have also signed
this summer the highly-rated Swiss international Valon Behrami and Iceland
U21 defender Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson.

Stech gets stuck in - WHUFC
The coming season promises to be a big one for Marek Stech as he looks to
catch Alan Curbishley's eye
04.08.2008

Marek Stech is looking to put the good advice he has received from
team-mates into action this season after gaining vital first-team experience
in the last week.

After getting 20 minutes in the 2-0 win at Peterborough United last Tuesday,
the 18-year-old goalkeeper got his chance to make his full debut, albeit in
a non-competitive fixture, against Southampton last week. He was a confident
performer and although Southampton struck twice in the 2-2 draw, the
upcoming keeper was not fazed. He underlined his growing stature by making
some good saves before and after the two goals.

"The first chance they had, I managed to get a hand to it and push it over
the bar," said Stech, who replaced the rested Robert Green. "They scored
twice but I was still able to get some saves in and I felt confident
throughout the match. The manager said I played well and I was happy to hear
that, because it was my debut for the first team and a big moment for me."

Stech, who signed a new five-year contract last month, revealed that Alan
Curbishley only told him he would be in the starting eleven just before
kick-off. "The manager told me I was playing and it was a nice surprise,"
said Stech. "Greeny had travelled as well, so I didn't expect to start. I
was very pleased to get the shout."

The Czech youth international keeper has also been included in the squad
alongside Green that travels to Ipswich for Monday's friendly at Portman
Road. There is a good relationship between the two and he also gets plenty
of support from the other senior players - especially his fellow
stop-stoppers and goalkeeping coach Ludeuk Miklosko.

Stech added: "In training, Greeny and Jimmy [Walker] talk to me about how I
can do this or that better. Ludo is also helping me and always talks to me
before and after a game. It is good to hear all of this and all I can do is
my best in training and then show the manager what I can do on the pitch."

Hines shows his variety - WHUFC
Young striker Zavon Hines is ready to focus on his all-round game in order
to prove his ability
04.08.2008

Zavon Hines is having a purple patch in front of goal and is enjoying every
minute of his good form during pre-season.

Despite five goals in five games, the 19-year-old striker still has his feet
firmly on the ground and is simply looking to learn and improve in every
match he plays. Hines scored his third penalty of the pre-season, when he
put a West Ham United XI ahead in a 2-1 loss against Grays Athletic at the
weekend. He had rounded out the scoring the night before in the 2-2 draw at
Southampton with perhaps his best strike to date this summer.

That goal followed previous strikes against Hampton and Richmond Borough,
Thurrock and Billericay. For Hines, who has come through West Ham's
acclaimed youth academy, it is just where he wants to be but he knows there
is a way to go before putting pressure on the first-choice forwards. "I have
been waiting a long time to be at this point of my career. I have got
chances in these matches and have taken them," said the south London-born
forward.

"I want to keep scoring, but I am also aware that it's not just about
scoring goals, I have to make sure I am improving myself in every game. It's
about the whole performance." That said, it is his prowess in front of goal
that has given him extra confidence to offer more to the team.

That was underlined in the way he imposed himself at St Mary's after
entering the fray as a replacement for Carlton Cole. "Valon [Behrami]
crossed the ball and I heard Julien [Faubert] call for it behind me," said
Hines. "But I have been told to be more selfish when I am around the box, so
I just kept the ball and took a shot. I was so excited to see it go in.

"I am just looking forward to every game. The manager has told me I have
done well and we have also talked about things I don't do well yet, which is
good, because you learn from your mistakes. I am just trying to take it all
in and get better in each game that comes along."

Lastuvka joins West Ham on loan - BBC

West Ham have signed Czech Republic keeper Jan Lastuvka on a season-long
loan deal from Shakhtar Donetsk, according to the Ukrainian club. Shakhtar's
website states that Lastuvka, 26, completed a medical at Upton Park over the
weekend. The former under-21 international spent the 2006/07 season on loan
at Fulham and played 12 games for the Cottagers. Lastuvka then returned to
Shakhtar but was loaned out again last season, which he spent with German
side VfL Bochum. He began his career with Czech side MFK Karvina and also
played for Banik Ostrava before joining Shakhtar in 2004. Lastuvka's
compatriot, and fellow goalkeeper, Marek Stech is also on West Ham's books
and another Czech, Ludek Miklosko, is the club's goalkeeping coach.

The club have confirmed the capture of 17-year-old Austrian
defender/midfielder Georg Grasser. Austrian under-19 international Grasser
will play for Tony Carr's youth team next season and becomes the latest
foreign youngster to arrive at the club since Gianluca Nani's appointment
earlier this year. Formerly of GAK (Graz), Grasser was first linked with a
move to the Hammers back in March. His former club have received a nominal
fee (thought to be in the region of £100,000) but the deal also includes
clauses for first team appearances and international call-ups. Should
Grasser not prove a success at West Ham the deal allows him to return to his
former club at the end of his contract on a free transfer, according to
reports. The youngster was also said to be interesting Udinese of Italy but
opted to move to England instead.

* Grasser's former club GAK went into administration last season and will
play in Austria's Regionalliga (third division) next season after being hit
with a massive points deduction.

West Ham United's decision to retire Bobby Moore's number six shirt fifteen
years after his death has been criticised by a number of supporters. The
club's decision to retire the shirt often worn by Moore was revealed at the
weekend, since when a number of supporters have questioned the timing and
reasons behind it. Twice before fans have urged the club to retire the
number six shirt, but on both occasions - first in 1993 following Moore's
death, then again seven years ago following a concerted effort - those pleas
were rejected by the club's previous administration.
However the club have now decided to act in order to mark 50 years since
Moore's first team debut. United CEO Scott Duxbury told whufc.com: "When we
were talking about ways to mark 50 years since Bobby Moore's debut, there
was only one true gesture that would do him justice - retiring the No6 shirt
he made his own. With the launching of the Bobby Moore Cup and the
partnership with the fund in his name as well, he will be a part of this
club for generations to come. Whenever fans think of West Ham United, they
will think of Bobby Moore."

West Ham United have been heavily criticised over the years for refusing to
work with Moore after he left the club in 1974. The World Cup winning hero,
who spent 16 years at the Boleyn at a first team player was forced to work
as a pundit for radio in his final years - something many supporters have
never forgiven the club for.

One supporter, talking on KUMB's forum this weekend said: "Why retire a
number? It's a stupid move as far as I'm concerned. I still don't like squad
numbers and this is just another American habit we don't neeed. "People
should be happy and proud to claim the number six shirt at West Ham. It is a
shame he just wasn't looked after by the club when he was alive."

Whilst another added: "If this were to be done it should have been done when
the great man died, not 15 years down the line. Because of that, this seems
like a bit of an hollow act. "We, and most of football, know and recognise
just how good Bobby Moore was. It doesn't need this to show that."

However some fans were supportive of the idea; one stating: "About time. He
was the most legendary player to wear the claret and blue and this is a
fitting tribute."

* Current number 6 Matthew Upson will wear the number 15 shirt this season.
Those supporters who have pruchased a replica shirt with Upson's name and
current number are advised to contact the club in order to arrange for a
replacement.

United will have the opportunity to make the loan deal permanent at the end

Pre-season so far - KUMB
Filed: Monday, 4th August 2008
By: Thomas Rooney

The old clichés are that 'it's only a friendly' and that pre-season games
'mean very little'. Well, although I recognise they are not the be all and
end all, they do hold some more significance than some people give them
credit for in my opinion. It gives the manager the chance to find out more
about his new players, experiment with formations and start to get an idea
of what his best eleven is.

Of course, this experimental approach to friendlies could jeopardise the
result you achieve. That's why there has to be a balance. Football is a
results business and if your team can get into the winning habit before the
season begins, then that's ideal. Nobody wants to be going into a new season
with a few defeats under their belts; it doesn't do anything for confidence.
So, in my opinion, managers should be adopting tactics that will win them
the game. Not ones which will best accommodate seeing a few players try new
positions.

When it comes to pre-season I accept that fans' predictions can go from one
extreme to the other. Win a few games in pre-season and it's 'we can do it
this year', lose a few and it's 'we are useless – going down'. So, maybe
that is another incentive to do well in pre-season. It might just keep the
fans positive for a few games longer!

So, with all this in mind, how have West Ham got on so far in their
pre-season campaign? Well, they started off with a victory over non-league
side Hampton and Richmond. As good a start as any I suppose…then came the
two games in America. First up was a trip to Ohio to face Columbus Crew.

Just six minutes into the game, the Hammers were in front. Dean Ashton – who
it is great to see getting a pre-season under his belt – knocked the ball in
from just outside the penalty area. However, 'the Crew' were back on level
terms when Jason Garey got himself on the score sheet. West Ham weren't to
be denied their second win of pre-season though and an own goal from Brad
Evans plus a Kyel Reid strike, secured the victory.

Next up was a game against David Beckham's MLS AllStars. The negatives from
this one? West Ham lost 3-2. The positives? Dean Ashton netted twice to
continue his good form. I really hope he can stay fit for the majority of
next season, because if he does I would put all my football betting money on
him scoring at least 15 goals. Losing against a team containing players that
were voted into the team by fans isn't fantastic, but on this occasion I
think Ashton's goals outweigh the result in terms of significance ahead of
the coming season.

After returning home from America, the first real game of pre-season took
place. I say this because it was against a league side in England. That is
what is going to prepare you for the Premier League, not a couple of
exhibition matches in the American sunshine. Anyway, I am happy to report
that the game against Peterborough saw a strong West Ham side put in a good
performance. They looked like a decent outfit. Most importantly though,
Craig Bellamy – who only played nine times last season – scored the game's
two goals to give West Ham victory. He looked sharp and raring to go. He can
be a huge player for Alan Curbishley next season, of that I have no doubt.
Like Curbishley recently said, he will be like a 'new signing' if he does
stay fit. So, 2-0 to West Ham against League One new-boys Peterborough.

The most recent friendly saw West Ham go up a level in terms of opposition.
They travelled to St Marys to play Championship side Southampton. Bellamy
was again in the starting eleven as the Hammers drew 2-2 after coming from
behind. Dave McGoldrick scored twice for the home side to give them a two
goal cushion, but West Ham hit back through Calum Davenport and 19-year-old
striker Zavon Hines. A poor result really, but it did show the teams
battling qualities and that can only be a good thing.

Now there are just two pre-season games remaining before the big kick-off.
Games against Ipswich and Villarreal come before West Ham host Wigan on 16th
August in the Premier League. Overall, I think preparations are going well.
The biggest factor for me is that Craig Bellamy and Dean Ashton are playing
and scoring goals. They can form an excellent partnership, I'm certain of
that. They compliment each other well and will score plenty of goals if they
are given a run of games together.

Of course, there still are a few injury concerns, but I think the team is
taking shape. Mark Noble and Scott Parker are forming a strong central
midfield partnership and as I have already mentioned, the strike force is
also taking shape. Throw in the positive impact Valon Behrami has made and
it's been a good pre-season. It is hard to predict where West Ham will
finish at this stage, but I'm positive and I honestly believe that if the
team that has operated the majority of these warm up games stays fit, then
it will be a much better season than last time.

New Fulham striker Bobby Zamora claims he was forced to leave West Ham
because the club performed a U-turn on a written contract offer. Zamora made
a surprise move from east to west London in July as Fulham boss Roy Hodgson
spent £4.8million to secure the forward's services. And the former Tottenham
and Brighton man has now blamed his Upton Park exit on the Hammers and has
accused the club of going back on a written promise of a new contract.
Robert Green recently criticised West Ham for failing to offer him a new
deal and Zamora believes that a number of squad members are unsettled by the
club's financial policy. "West Ham is my club and the team I always wanted
to play for, but football is a business now," Zamora said in the Daily
Mirror.
"I had it in writing that they would give me a contract but it didn't
happen. The club unfortunately changed their minds. "They accepted the bid
and that sort of says a lot and I was no longer needed. "It must be a little
unsettling for a few of the lads there and I know Rob Green has come out and
said something similar. "It was hard for me to leave as I am a West Ham fan
and love the club dearly because I had some brilliant years there. "I was
sad to leave but this is another chapter in my career and hopefully I will
get a chance to play a lot more football."

Hammers land Lastuvka - SSN
Goalkeeper moves to Upton Park on season-long loan
By Vasek Kadlec Last updated: 4th August 2008

West Ham have completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Jan
Lastuvka on a season-long loan. The Hammers also have the option to make the
deal for the 26-year-old permanent at the end of the campaign. Lastuvka will
now begin training with West Ham goalkeeping coach Ludek Miklosko, but he
does not expect to play a part in Monday's friendly at Ipswich. "On Monday I
have a light training with him (Ludek Miklosko)," Lastuvka told CTK. "The
team play a friendly match but I will not play in it. "I hope that I will
get into good shape overall and will be as helpful to the team as possible.
So far I have had only good feelings."
The one-time Czech Republic international also had offers from Sparta
Prague, Salzburg and Banik Ostrava during the summer. Lastuvka has already
had one spell in England with Fulham, although he was unable to secure
regular football ahead of Antti Niemi.

Ljungberg happy with Hammers - SSN
Midfielder's agent rules out Olympiakos switch
By Kent Hedlundh Last updated: 4th August 2008

The agent of Freddie Ljungberg has rubbished reports linking the West Ham
midfielder with a move to Olympiakos. The 31-year-old has been linked with a
switch to Greece, while Roma have also been rumoured to have shown interest
over the summer. However, Ljungberg's agent, Claes Elefalk, insists the
former Sweden international is happy at Upton Park. "I can promise that we
haven't received any offer," Elefalk told Swedish media. "He is truly
enjoying himself in England. He is one of the best paid players in England
and I don't believe they (Olympiakos) have got the finances for it, either."

Hammers to retire number six shirt in memory of Bobby - Guardian Series
2:19pm Monday 4th August 2008

WEST Ham United will retire the number six shirt with this Saturday's
inaugural match for the Bobby Moore Cup against Spanish giants Villarreal at
the Boleyn Ground. It is 50 years since the club legend made his debut in a
3-2 home win against Manchester United on Monday, September 8, 1958. As
such, it was felt the time was right to permanently honour his contribution
and lasting legacy. The decision was taken after close consultation with
Bobby's widow Stephanie Moore, current number six Matthew Upson - the
England defender who will become the last player to wear the number - and
the Premier League. A billboard in the corner of the stadium will also
feature a permanent number six this season to remind of the significance of
the half-century since a 17-year-old Moore broke into the first team. The
rest is history. He went on to captain the club to success in the 1964 FA
Cup and the 1965 European Cup Winners' Cup before finally leaving in 1974.
The August 9 match also marks a new three-year partnership agreement with
the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, which was announced last month.
The club is proud to already have a long-standing association with the
charity, which works tirelessly to raise money for research into bowel
cancer. It was founded by Stephanie Moore, in partnership with Cancer
Research UK (Registered Charity No. 1089464), after his tragic death from
the disease aged just 51 in 1993. To commemorate the new partnership, £1
from the sale of every match ticket will go to the Bobby Moore Fund for
Cancer Research UK to help tackle bowel cancer.
In addition, West Ham United will match each £1 raised to double the total
amount donated to the charity. This initiative follows on from a number of
events last season, including the dedication of the home match against
Newcastle United in his honour and the end of season championship staged at
the stadium. With the new partnership, the Fund will have even stronger
ties.
Stephanie Moore, of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research, said: "The
legendary number six shirt is synonymous with Bobby and his triumphant and
illustrious footballing career. "It's retirement signifies deep respect,
affection and admiration for all that Bobby achieved and all that he
represented in this marvellous game of ours."
West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury said: "When we were talking about
ways to mark 50 years since Bobby Moore's debut, there was only one true
gesture that would do him justice – retiring the number six shirt he made
his own. "With the launching of the Bobby Moore Cup and the partnership with
the fund in his name as well, he will be a part of this club for generations
to come. "Whenever fans think of West Ham United, they will think of Bobby
Moore."

Boss Alan Curbishley added: "It is a fitting tribute to the greatest West
Ham player ever and the decision to retire the Bobby Moore number six shirt
shows the esteem to which Bobby is held at the club. "I first met Bobby as a
14-year-old being invited into the club during the summer holidays by Ron
Greenwood to join in the pre-season training. "I have fond memories of Bobby
Moore as a person because of those times. "He was the sort of person who had
time for anybody. That was a great part of his personality. "As a
14-year-old I had numerous conversations during the six weeks which helped
me progress as a young player."
Defender Upson - who will wear the number 15 shirt after Saturday's game -
said: "I think it's a fitting contribution by the club to retire the number
six shirt in tribute to Bobby Moore. "I am honoured to be the last player to
wear the number six. "I will miss it, but I am glad that is being retired in
honour of such a fantastic player and a true club legend."

Fulham's Zamora just can't let go.... - BubblesInTheAir.com
Monday 04 Aug 2008 12:38:48 by Tony Watson

West Ham have yet again been the topic of discussion for Bobby Zamora. The
ex-Hammers striker has claimed the club said they were going to offer him a
new contract but then accepted an offer from Fulham for him. It is evident
Zamora left the Boleyn Ground with a heavy heart as he has not stopped
speaking about the club since he left. Whilst his comments towards his
feelings for the club were nice to hear for hammers fans one can't help
wonder what Fulham fans are thinking of his string of statements over the
past few weeks. For a player who cost around the £5 million mark surely
they'd expect him to be more focussed on his new club and the challenge
ahead at Craven Cottage instead of dwelling on his past at Upton Park.
Zamora told the Daily star "West Ham is my club and the team I always wanted
to play for, but football is a business now," "I had it in writing that they
would give me a contract but it didn't happen. The club unfortunately
changed their minds. "They accepted the bid and that sort of says a lot and

West Ham complete Jan Lastuvka signing - Telegraph
West Ham have completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Jan
Lastuvka on a season-long loan much to the delight of the club's goalkeeping
coach Ludek Miklosko.
By Matt Lawless
Last Updated: 12:06PM BST 04 Aug 2008

Miklosko, who was West Ham's number one between 1990 and 1998, believes his
Czech Republic compatriot will act as a reliable understudy for Robert Green
this season, following the departure of number two Richard Wright to
Ipswich. "He's a decent goalkeeper," said Miklosko, who is backing Lastuvka
to prove his doubters wrong after an unsuccessful loan spell with Fulham the
season before last. "At this moment, we need a number-two goalkeeper and Jan
knows he is coming as a number-two. "I know Jan very well and he had some
problems when he was at Fulham. He was on his own because, for some reason,
his family didn't come with him to England. "He couldn't concentrate on his
football properly, but they will come with him this time. I know him and I
trust him and he will be good for us. I'm looking forward to working with
him," he added. Lastuvka, 26, had his transfer confirmed by the Ukrainian
club this morning and is understood to have rejected a return to former club
Banik Ostrava, as well as turning down approaches from Sparta Prague and Red
Bull Salzburg in favour of a move to Upton Park. The goalkeeper has had
limited opportunities for Shakhtar due to restrictions on foreign players in
the Ukrainian league and has spent the past two seasons on loan, including
spells at Fulham and German side Bochum. Looking forward to the challenge,
Lastuvka said: "I hope that I will get into good shape overall and will be
as helpful to the team as possible. So far I have had only good feelings."

Untried defenders set for Hammers clash - eveningstar.co.uk
04 August 2008 | 12:00
By ELVIN KING

IPSWICH Town could have 21-year-old and 18-year-old defenders making their
first team debuts when they begin their Coca-Cola Championship campaign on
Saturday. Both Pim Balkestein and Tommy Smith will be playing for a start
against Preston at the weekend when the Blues face Premier League West Ham
in a friendly at Portman Road tonight (kick-off 7.45pm). Signed from Dutch
club Heereveen in the summer, Balkestein has impressed manager Jim Magilton
in the troublesome left back role. The Dutch youngster, who made just one
first team appearance in Holland last season, has overcome a slight groin
strain and trained normally yesterday. Academy-produced Smith, who was
loaned to Stevenage last term, impressed against West Brom ten days ago, and
offers the height and physique that complements fellow central defender and
captain-elect Gareth McAuley. They will be playing for their places tonight
with Magilton saying: "Pim has impressed me at left back, and if he does not
turn out to be a success in the game it will our fault. "He has given me
food for thought for a left back role. Tommy has also impressed me
pre-season. "I was pleased with his display against West Brom and he will be
a better player for that game. "He is a challenger, and I will be watching
him closely tonight."
Town have produced some world class left-sided defenders over the years with
Kevin Beattie and Terry Butcher springing to mind, and Smith has the
attributes to follow suit. If McAuley leads Town out tonight he will be set
to take over from Jason De Vos as the new Ipswich skipper. Jonathan Walters
misses the game tonight because he is in the north west training under a
regime planned by Town's fitness staff while his wife awaits to give birth
to their second child. Walters is unlikely to face Preston unless he is able
to return to Portman Road soon. Otherwise, Town have everybody bar David
Norris available with a side similar to one that will face Preston set to
start - with ample substitutions after the break.
As indicated in Saturday's Evening Star, Magilton has been impressed with
Honduran trialist Emilio Izaguirre and the 22-year-old has stayed on after
originally planning to return at the weekend. But reports the left-sided
player has been offered a contract are wide of the mark. Magilton said:
"Emilio has done well in training and he featured yesterday. "I want to see
him in a match condition and will make a decision after we have fixed up a
game behind closed doors."
Izaguirre is ineligible to play tonight because he has no work permit and
does not come from within the EU. Town chief executive Derek Bowden is to
speak to Ben Thatcher today over the offer that has been made to the
ex-Charlton left-back. Thatcher has a 15-match ban hanging over his head
until August 23 - and nothing might happen until after then to nullify the
possibility of the player having to sit out a third of the season. Former
Town left back Jamie Clapham is training at Portman Road right now - but
there is little chance of a contract offer. "Jamie is a good lad and he
currently hasn't got a club," said Magilton. "I have no problem with him
spending a few days training with us."

West Ham United complete move for Jan Lastuvka - Times Online and Agencies

West Ham United have signed Czech goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka on a season-long
loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, according to the Ukrainian club. Lastuvka, 26,
successfully completed a medical over the weekend and will provide back-up
to Hammers number one Robert Green. The former under-21 international spent
2006-07 on loan at Fulham where he played 12 games for the Cottagers. After
returning to Shakhtar when Lawrie Sanchez, the then Fulham manager, refused
to make his move permanent last summer, he enjoyed a successful year with
Bochum in Germany's Bundesliga.

West Ham play down Kieron Dyer injury reports - Telegraph
West Ham have played down reports that Kieron Dyer has suffered a further
injury set-back, insisting the player has embarked on a six-week specialist
rehabilitation programme.
By Matt Lawless
Last Updated: 11:02AM BST 04 Aug 2008

Reports emanated at the weekend suggesting the England international would
be out for another four months after suffering a stress fracture on the same
leg he originally sustained a double-leg break last season. The horrific
injury occurred in a Carling Cup game at Bristol Rovers in what was only his
third outing for West Ham following his £6 million arrival from Newcastle.
Despite Dyer's initial hopes of a return in tonight's friendly against
former side Ipswich, West Ham have announced that the player is not yet
ready for match action and they have no desire to rush him back. The club's
official website confirmed new chief medical officer, Nikos Tzouroudis,
re-assessed Dyer's injury last week and decided the best course of action
would be to continue on a specialist rehabilitation programme over the next
six weeks before beginning a period of pre-season training. Dyer,
historically unfortunate with injuries during his career, has been a rare
and expensive commodity at Upton Park costing £2 million per appearance so
far. Two weeks ago, Dyer had earmarked a return to action against at Portman
Road this evening. The midfielder, who has won 33 international caps for
England, reported that he had renewed optimism for the new season after
partaking in a training session for the first time in 11 months following an
intense regime of rehabilitation. He said: "It's just so good to be involved
again. I had a few setbacks but have been able to put all that behind me
now. I've worked hard to get through it all. "Once the pre-season fixtures
came out, I noticed we were playing Ipswich. I thought that would be a good
game to pencil in for my return."
Manager Alan Curbishley still has a host of players unavailable to injury
but has been buoyed by the return of Craig Bellamy, Julien Faubert, Lee
Bowyer and Matty Etherington who spent most of last season on the treatment
table. Curbishley has reportedly captured the signing of Czech Republic
goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka from Shakhtar Donetsk on a season-long loan. The
former Fulham player, 26, will challenge Robert Green for the number one
jersey.

Injury blow for Hammers star Dyer could mean Ljungberg stays at Upton Park -
Daily Mail

Kieron Dyer looks certain to be out of action until November after suffering
a serious problem in his comeback. The West Ham midfielder, who broke a leg
in a Carling Cup tie against Bristol City almost a year ago, was originally
hoping to feature against his former club Ipswich in the friendly at Portman
Road.
However, Dyer had to scrap those plans after he felt pain around the site of
the original fracture during training last week and a CT scan revealed a
hairline crack. He will now follow a six-week rehabilitation plan and is
unlikely to be ready to return for at least three months. The problems may
affect the future of Freddie Ljungberg. The former Arsenal midfielder looked
certain to leave as part of the club's squad-trimming moves, but Dyer's
prolonged absence could now change things.

West Ham agree loan deal for Shakhtar Donestsk goalkeeper Lastuvka
Czech looking forward to Upton Park switch
Staff and agencies guardian.co.uk, Monday August 4 2008

West Ham have signed the Czech goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka on a season-long loan
from Shakhtar Donetsk, according to the Ukrainian club.

The 26-year-old former Under-21 international successfully completed a
medical over the weekend and will provide back-up to current Hammers No1
Robert Green. "I'm glad it's turned out like this," Lastuvka told CTK. "I am
looking forward to playing for West Ham and I'll do my best to repay their
faith in me."

Lastuvka spent the 2006-07 campaign on loan at Fulham where he played 12
games for the Cottagers. After failing to impress the then-Fulham manager
Lawrie Sanchez, Lastuvka returned to Shakhtar where he was once again loaned
out, this time to Bochum in Germany's Bundesliga.

Lastuvka is relishing the opportunity of working with fellow countryman
Ludek Miklosko, who is the goalkeeper coach at Upton Park. "It's a big
plus," he added. "I think the co-operation with him can help me a lot in
improving my skills."

Man City To Swoop For Hammers Ashton As Santa Cruz Alternative? -
premiershiplatest.com

Submitted by Jake Briggs on Mon, 2008-08-04 11:37.

New Manchester City boss Mark Hughes is considering making an offer of
£15million for England International Dean Ashton at West Ham United if he
fails to land Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz from former club Blackburn
Rovers, according to reports. Hughes had been linked with a £12million move
for former charge Santa Cruz over the weekend, with Tottenham Hotspur,
Arsenal and Manchester United also linked to the South American. However,
Rovers manager Paul Ince is reluctant to let the former Bayern Munich
striker leave Ewood Park this summer. This has led Hughes to turn his
attention to 24-year-old Ashton, who he sees as the ideal target man for
City as he prepares for his first season in charge at the Eastlands Stadium.
Ashton had been linked with a move away from Upton Park this summer, with
reports that a pay squeeze was to be introduced at the East London club.
Hammers manager Alan Curbishley will not let Ashton leave without a fight
though as he sees the forward as a key part of what he is trying to build at
West Ham.

The former Norwich player has just recently signed a new long-term deal with
the Irons, but an offer of £15million from City could test both Curbishley's
and the board's resolve at Upton Park.

Ludo backs Czech mate Lastuvka to shine - Echo
11:02am Monday 4th August 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

LUDEK Miklosko believes goalkeeper Jan Lastuvka is the perfect man to fill
the role as West Ham United's number-two stopper this season. Lastuvka's
season-long loan move to the Hammers from Shakhtar Donetsk was confirmed by
the Ukrainian club on Monday morning. Like Miklosko, the 26-year-old hails
from the Czech Republic, and the former Irons hero believes his countryman
will prove a reliable back-up to Robert Green. "He's a decent goalkeeper. At
this moment, we need a number-two goalkeeper and Jan knows he is coming as a
number-two," Miklosko told the Echo. "He wanted to train with me and knows
that he will improve and that, then, he may have a better chance to go
somewhere else and be a number-one. "We'll see how he's doing, but it will
be good to have another experienced goalkeeper around and I'm looking
forward to working with him."
Lastuvka has found his opportunities at Shakhtar limited in recent years due
to the Ukrainian League's limitations on foreign players. As a result, he
has spent the past two seasons out on loan, first enduring a difficult spell
at Fulham, then heading to Bundesliga club Vfl Bochum last term. But
Miklosko is confident Lastuvka has overcome his difficulties and will prove
a shrewd acquisition. "I know Jan very well and he had some problems when he
was at Fulham. He was on his own because, for some reason, his family didn't
come with him to England," he added. "He couldn't concentrate on his
football properly, but they will come with him this time. I know him and I
trust him and he will be good for us."
Lastuvka turned down offers from Czech sides Banik Ostrava, where he made
his name, and Sparta Prague and Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg to return
to London. And the player himself is delighted to be heading for Upton Park.
"I hope that I will get into good shape overall and will be as helpful to
the team as possible. So far I have had only good feelings," he told Czech
newspaper CTK.

West Ham Players are concerned! - Cmon Yu Irons

Its just come to our attention that a majority of the squad are unhappy with
the way the club is looking financially. Bobby Zamora, a player that
believed he would have his contract renewed and was let down at the last
moment then sold to Fulham, spoke out to the media about what could only be
changing room gossip. He admits that the players at West Ham are concerned
about the financial situation at Upton Park. Robert Green whom we all know
is unhappy at the moment not being offered a pay rise is obviously one of
the players, and other players are also concerned about their future. As a
fan and i also know of many other fans who are also concerned into why we
really are not doing much in the Summer transfer window, Buying Berhami is
fantastic, and getting Lastuvka on loan is great to, but we desperately
need a winger and maybe a big name striker. We also have to be ready for
what could be a massive payout to Sheff Utd in September which could be as
high as £40m. Being unsettled as a player will no doubt show on the field,
lets just hope somebody at West ham sorts this problem out and reassures the
boys their future is safe and bright.

Hughes To Offer £15M For Ashton? - Goal.com

Manchester City are said to be preparing a late bid for West Ham star Dean
Ashton. According to reports over the weekend, City boss Mark Hughes has
now focused his intention on Aston as he looks to quickly build a side
capable of competing for a Champions League place this season. The England
international has been tipped for a switch this summer, amid rumours of a
pay-squeeze at Upton Park, and the speculation surrounding him has refused
to die even after he recently signed a new long-term deal with the east
London club. Ashton, 24, impressed for the Hammers last term, netting ten
strikes in the Premier League campaign. He had suffered an injury-disrupted
West Ham career up to then, but subsequently earned an England cap, coming
last June in Trinidad and Tobago. West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has made it
clear that he sees Ashton as a key-member of the side and has always been
adamant that he will not be sold, though a £15million bid that City are
reported to be preparing would surely give him and the club pause for
thought.

HATCHET MAN: Just when will Kieron Dyer make his annual appearance for West
Ham? - Mail Online
Last updated at 10:02 AM on 04th August 2008

West Ham must be as proud as punch about the business acumen they showed in
signing Kieron Dyer. They paid £6million to Newcastle for a player who has
taken so many bad knocks that he could soon be mistaken for a crash test
dummy, and the deal looks worse than ever today. The midfielder is facing
another three month lay-off after spending most of his year-long West Ham
career trying to come back from breaking his right leg in two places. He was
on the verge of a return last week but is thought to have suffered a stress
fracture in the same leg and, as sad as it is for Dyer, the club are rightly
embarrassed about it. They tried to bury the news two-thirds of the way down
a story on their website about Dean Ashton maybe playing in a friendly.
Apparently, 'there is no desire to rush him back' from West Ham. Hatchet
Man suspects that if he adds to his three appearances at all it will feel
like a bonus.

Zamora questions Hammers' policy - Setanta
by Robin Hackett, 04 August 2008

Fulham striker Bobby Zamora has claimed West Ham went back on a written
promise of a new contract and believes some of the squad is 'unsettled' by
the club's financial policy. Zamora, who joined Fulham last month, is a West
Ham supporter and admits he would have loved to have stayed at Upton Park,
but he believes the club is now putting business first. And, after
goalkeeper Robert Green recently spoke out against the club after being
denied a pay rise, Zamora feels some players are concerned about their
futures. "West Ham is my club and the team I always wanted to play for, but
football is a business now," he told the Daily Mirror. "I had it in writing
that they would give me a contract but it didn't happen. The club
unfortunately changed their minds. "They accepted the bid and that sort of
says a lot and I was no longer needed. "It must be a little unsettling for a
few of the lads there and I know Rob Green has come out and said something
similar. "It was hard for me to leave as I am a West Ham fan and love the
club dearly because I had some brilliant years there. "I was sad to leave
but this is another chapter in my career and hopefully I will get a chance
to play a lot more football here."

I'll spend again, Curbishley tells Echo - Echo
9:20am Monday 4th August 2008
By Rob Pritchard »

ALAN Curbishley is planning to open his chequebook at least one more time
before the summer transfer window closes. The West Ham United manager has
made just one high-profile signing since the end of last season, bringing in
£5million Switzerland international Valon Behrami from Lazio. But with the
injury crisis that blighted the Irons' last campaign showing no signs of
abating, Curbishley has told the Echo he plans to delve back into the
transfer market, with a striker and left-back top of his list of targets.
"There's one or two other areas that I've got to start considering - we've
got about a month until the window closes," he revealed. "It's because of
injuries. We've got little niggles and as we get closer to the start of the
season and the window closing, I think you'll see a lot of clubs reacting to
different issues. "We'll be no different to that."
Up front, Curbishley has injury worries over Dean Ashton, Carlton Cole and
Craig Bellamy while George McCartney, the club's only senior left-back, is
struggling with hamstring trouble. Forward Kieron Dyer will be out for at
least another six weeks suffered another setback in his comeback from the
double leg fracture he sustained at Bristol Rovers a year ago. Meanwhile,
defenders James Collins (knee), Danny Gabbidon (stomach) and Jon Spector
(hip) will all miss the opening weeks of the new Premier League season.
Young centre back James Tomkins (leg) and winger Luis Boa Morte (blisters)
are also struggling, while Nigel Quashie (foot) has begun a new course of
specialist treatment to cure an injury he suffered in the 4-3 defeat to
Tottenham Hotspur 17 months ago today.
