Statement on Terry Brown - WHUFC
The club can confirm a settlement with Terry Brown that ends all outstanding
disputes
11.07.2008

West Ham United and former chairman Terry Brown have agreed an out of court
settlement in relation to their respective legal claims. The settlement
brings to an end all outstanding disputes between the two parties.

Commenting on the settlement, West Ham United Chairman and owner Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson, said: "It is time to move on from old disputes and legal
battles. My focus, and that of the whole Board, is on the future. To do that
we need to draw a line under past issues and also recognise that what
matters is building a successful football club.

"Terry Brown has a long history with West Ham United as former Chairman and
leading shareholder and there is no reason for the club and Terry to be at
odds with each other. We have settled our differences and Terry will be a
welcome guest at the club as we move forward into the new season."

Terry Brown, former Chairman, said: "I am pleased that we have brought these
matters to a sensible conclusion. Mr Gudmundsson has made clear his focus is
on the future not the past and I totally support that vision. West Ham
United has always been a special part of my life and I am delighted that I
will again have an opportunity to show my support for the club.

"The new Chairman and Board genuinely believe in this great club and I wish
them every success in the years ahead."

Tomkins and Sears fly flag - WHUFC
Tony Carr is looking forward to James Tomkins and Freddie Sears representing
club and country
11.07.2008

Tony Carr has spoken of his pride as James Tomkins and Freddie Sears prepare
to help England's quest for glory at next week's European Under-19
Championship in the Czech Republic.

The duo's inclusion in the prestigious UEFA tournament for the continent's
most talented teenagers is just reward for the progress they have made from
the West Ham United academy through to the first team. "They are playing in
a terrific tournament and they will only come back better players for it,"
Academy director Carr said. "This is only going to be good for their
education and they will come back better players for it."

Central defender Tomkins, 19, and 18-year-old striker Sears have both been
training with the Young Lions at the National Football Centre in
Burton-on-Trent before flying out to the Czech Republic and look set to be
involved in the opening fixture of the tournament on Monday afternoon.
England will take on the host nation in Liberec - match to be shown live on
Eurosport - before following that up with further Group B games against
Italy and Greece on 17 and 20 July respectively.

The call-up means Tomkins and Sears will not be able to travel with West Ham
United on the high-profile North American tour. Carr said they have mixed
feelings about missing out on the trip but the benefits were there for all
to see. "After representing the first team last season, they would have
wanted to stay and be part of Alan Curbishley's plans for the early part of
pre-season and have an opportunity to shine but you can't turn down
representing your country."

Carr added that the experience would be particularly beneficial as Tomkins
and Sears look to make an impact next season and in the future. "Club
football and international football even at U19 level does present different
problems. It tends to be more tactical and there tends to be more
opportunities for individuals to shine and be matchwinners. It is different
from the cut and thrust of club league football really and it will be
terrific for their development."

Brown in - KUMB

Former Chairman Terry Brown will return to West Ham United next season after
the club agreed an out-of-court settlement. Brown had announced plans to sue
the club's Icelandic owners for lost earnings and privileges after he was
told last year that he was no longer welcome at the club as a result of the
Tevez/Mascherano affair. However in a statement on whufc.com this morning,
the club revealed that the two parties had reached an out of court
settlement that will allow Brown to return - although the full extent of
what that means remains undisclosed. On purchasing the club in 2006 the new
Icelandic owners agreed that Brown would be paid his full £592,000 salary
for two further years whilst retaining certain other privileges such as
executive seats in the directors box, eight hospitality seats in the
Chairman's suite and a lifetime honoury Vice-Presidency. However he was
kicked out in February 2007 after the now-departed Eggert Magnusson revealed
that the club would be taking legal action against Brown and former MD Paul
Aldridge for damages incurred as a result of the Tevez/Mascherano fiasco.
Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson's statement read: "It is time to move on from old
disputes and legal battles. My focus, and that of the whole Board, is on the
future. "To do that we need to draw a line under past issues and also
recognise that what matters is building a successful football club.
Whilst Brown was quoted as saying: "I am pleased that we have brought these
matters to a sensible conclusion. Mr Gudmundsson has made clear his focus is
on the future not the past and I totally support that vision. "West Ham
United has always been a special part of my life and I am delighted that I

West Ham agree Brown settlement - The Independent
Friday, 11 July 2008

West Ham have agreed an out-of-court settlement to their legal dispute with
former chairman Terry Brown. Brown sold his majority holding in the Hammers
to an Icelandic consortium as part of an £85million takeover in November
2006, remaining as a director. But following the fall-out from the Carlos
Tevez and Javier Mascherano transfer saga - which eventually saw the
Barclays Premier League club fined £5.5million - certain contractual
agreements with Brown, such as a £1.2million salary and seats in the
directors' box at Upton Park, were withdrawn. All parties have, however, now
come to an agreement to signal an end to all outstanding disputes between
the two parties. West Ham chairman and owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson said in
a statement on the club's official website, www.whufc.com: "It is time to
move on from old disputes and legal battles. My focus, and that of the whole
board, is on the future. "To do that we need to draw a line under past
issues and also recognise that what matters is building a successful
football club. "Terry Brown has a long history with West Ham United as
former chairman and leading shareholder and there is no reason for the club
and Terry to be at odds with each other. "We have settled our differences
and Terry will be a welcome guest at the club as we move forward into the
new season." Brown was also glad to see the matter resolved. He said: "I am
pleased that we have brought these matters to a sensible conclusion. "Mr
Gudmundsson has made clear his focus is on the future, not the past, and I
totally support that vision. "West Ham United has always been a special part
of my life and I am delighted that I will again have an opportunity to show
my support for the club. "The new chairman and board genuinely believe in
this great club and I wish them every success in the years ahead."
Manager Alan Curbishley takes his squad to America for a short tour at the
end of the month, which will include a match against the Major League Soccer
All-Stars led by David Beckham in Toronto. However, it remains to be seen
just who will be in the Hammers squad for the start of the new campaign.
Premier League rivals Fulham have been given permission to speak to both
Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil, while Sunderland have targeted their former
defender George McCartney. Curbishley could move for Leicester full-back Joe
Mattock after England's Under-19 European Championship campaign in the Czech
Republic, which will also feature young Hammers James Tomkins and Freddie
Sears.

Sheffield United's compensation fight over Tevez to reach its conclusion in
September - Daily Mail
By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 12:46 PM on 11th July 2008

Sheffield United expect to learn the outcome of their claim against West Ham
for compensation over the Carlos Tevez affair in September. West Ham were
fined £5.5million but not docked points by the Premier League when found
guilty of fielding the ineligible Tevez and fellow Argentina international
Javier Mascherano during the 2006/7 season. The Blades felt they were
relegated unfairly on the final day of that season - West Ham survived
following Tevez's winner at Manchester United - but lost their legal fight
to be reinstated at the Hammers' expense. The South Yorkshire club have
since launched a legal fight to be compensated by the London club and Blades
plc chairman Kevin McCabe told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's down to the panel
to make their award which should be in September. "The formal arbitration
hearing was concluded last month, but there'll be one more day at the end of
July for further oral submissions." The Blades' legal battle for a financial
settlement is being heard by a Football Association tribunal.

Dealing With The Devil - Just Like My Dreams
The one sure way to conciliate a tiger is to allow oneself to be devoured...

The club has released a statement on the official site confirming an out of
court settlement with Terry Brown in relation to their respective legal
claims. The settlement brings to an end all outstanding disputes between the
two parties.

Former Chairman Brown had previously announced plans to sue the club's
Icelandic owners for lost earnings and privileges after he was perfunctorily
expelled from Upton Park by Eggert Magnusson as a result of the
Tevez/Mascherano affair. A condition of the sale of the club in December
2006 was that Brown would continue to be paid his full £592,000 salary for
two further years whilst retaining certain other privileges such as
executive seats in the directors box, eight hospitality seats in the
Chairman's suite and a lifetime honoury Vice-Presidency.

However he was kicked out in February 2007 after the now-departed Magnusson
revealed that the club would be taking legal action against Brown and former
MD Paul Aldridge for damages incurred as a result of the Tevez/Mascherano
fiasco. Shortly afterwards, he received a letter terminating the contract he
signed when he sold the club which guaranteed earnings of £1.5million until
31 May 2009. Magnusson, who was increasingly keen to distance himself from
the previous regime, held the former chairman largely responsible for the
problems with the deals. He made the decision to withhold the payments as a
means of seeking some redress for the £5.5 million fine levied by the
Premier League.

Brown's former managing director Paul Aldridge had also threatened legal
action, saying his reputation has been "besmirched" by the inquiry into the
transfers of Tevez and Mascherano. Aldridge said at the time: "Naturally, my
sympathies lie with the club I was chief executive of for 10 years in
respect of what seems a very harsh sanction. However, my own personal and
professional reputations have been besmirched. The findings accuse me of
acting dishonestly and lying. This is hardly natural justice in my view.
Until the publication of these findings, my integrity has never been
questioned during my career. Accordingly, I have placed the matter in the
hands of my lawyer who will be taking the matter further on my behalf."

Commenting on the agreement, West Ham United Chairman and owner Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson, said: "It is time to move on from old disputes and legal
battles. My focus, and that of the whole Board, is on the future. To do that
we need to draw a line under past issues and also recognise that what
matters is building a successful football club. Terry Brown has a long
history with West Ham United as former Chairman and leading shareholder and
there is no reason for the club and Terry to be at odds with each other. We
have settled our differences and Terry will be a welcome guest at the club
as we move forward into the new season."
Terry Brown said: "I am pleased that we have brought these matters to a
sensible conclusion. Mr Gudmundsson has made clear his focus is on the
future not the past and I totally support that vision. West Ham United has
always been a special part of my life and I am delighted that I will again
have an opportunity to show my support for the club. The new Chairman and
Board genuinely believe in this great club and I wish them every success in
the years ahead."

While one dispute draws to a discreet close, the club will now have to wait
until September before finding out whether or not they will be forced to pay
'compensation' to Sheffield United as a result of the Tevezgate case.
Chairman Kevin McCabe said he remains hopeful about the upcoming verdict.
"It's down to the panel to make their award which should be September," he
told BBC Radio Sheffield. "The formal arbitration hearing was concluded last
month but there'll be one more day at the end of July for further oral
submissions."

The Blades said they were unfairly demoted from the top flight after West
Ham were found guilty of breaching Premier League regulations in the signing
of Argentine Tevez and his compatriot Javier Mascherano. Rather than being
docked points by the three-man arbitration panel, the Hammers were fined
£5.5m and went on to survive the drop on the final day, while United were
relegated. In July 2007 the High Court refused United leave to appeal the
panel's decision over the affair. But McCabe has continued the club's fight
for a financial settlement and it is being heard by a Football Association
tribunal.

MLS All-Star lineup named - WHUFC
David Beckham will come up against England team-mate Dean Ashton in the MLS
All-Star Game
10.07.2008

West Ham United are set to face England midfielder David Beckham when the
club plays the Major League Soccer All-Stars in Toronto on Thursday 24 July.

The LA Galaxy player was among the eleven names voted into the First XI
following a poll of fans, players, media and coaches/general managers.
Beckham was second in the combined voting behind US star striker and
club-mate Landon Donovan, while the next most popular was the veteran
Chicago Fire and Mexico playmaker Cuauhtemoc Blanco. The match, which kicks
off at midnight London time, will be broadcast live in England via Setanta
Sports.

The New England Revolution, who are the MLS's form team, have three players
in the lineup - namely goalkeeper Matt Reis, defender Michael Parkhurst and
midfielder Shalrie Joseph. The defence also features Kansas City Wizards
defender Jimmy Conrad and Columbus Crew's Frankie Hejduk, who will be
taking on West Ham United four days earlier in a friendly on Sunday 20 July.

Joining Beckham, Blanco and Joseph in midfield are Chivas USA midfielder
Sacha Kljestan and Columbus midfielder Robbie Rogers. Up front alongside
Donovan is the FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper, who with eight goals has
three fewer than current league top scorer Donovan on eleven.

The First XI is reflective of Major League Soccer's diverse player pool.
Ranging in age from 21 (Robbie Rogers) to 35 (Cuauhtémoc Blanco), this group
brings an array of experience both domestically and abroad. Three players
born outside of the United States and Canada are among the eleven, each
having captained their respective country's national team - Beckham (102
caps with England), Blanco (97 caps with Mexico), and Joseph (Grenada).

On 15 July, Revolution head coach Steve Nicol and his staff will select five
additional All-Stars, who will join two Commissioner selections to complete
the 18-man MLS squad. Nicol earned the honor of coaching the MLS side by
leading his team to the highest points per game average in the league
through games on 29 June. The First XI is not necessarily the starting
lineup. Nicol will select the starters based on player availability and
tactical considerations

The 2007/08 campaign was a successful one under Kevin Keen's guidance for
the first time with the side challenging for the Barclays Premier Reserve
League South title until the last game. Although ultimately finishing four
points behind champions Aston Villa, it was a successful season that saw the
reserve squad help the Academy to produce three players - namely James
Tomkins, captain Jack Collison and Freddie Sears - for the first team. It
was also where Dean Ashton demonstrated his return to fitness before a
strong finish to the campaign.

Speaking about his season as reserve-team skipper, Collison said: "To
captain the reserves was a great honour. I have really enjoyed captaining
them and it helped improve me as a player and also off the pitch as well
with the added responsibility. I am a player who thrives off that
responsibility."

McCartney a happy Hammer - SSN
Defender cools Sunderland link
Last updated: 10th July 2008

George McCartney has played down reports linking him with a return to
Sunderland, saying he is happy at West Ham. West Ham are reported to have
turned down a bid in the region of £4.5million from Sunderland for the
Northern Ireland international. McCartney was one of West Ham's most
consistent performers last season and his performances caught the attention
of Black Cats boss Roy Keane, who is keen to lure him back to Wearside. The
27-year-old arrived at Upton Park from Sunderland in 2006 in a swap deal
with Clive Clarke and he quickly established himself in East London.
McCartney admits he is flattered to be linked with a return to Sunderland,
but insists he is more than content to stay at Upton Park. "I would like to
stay at West Ham," McCartney told the Belfast Telegraph. "I have no desire
to leave. When clubs show an interest in you it is flattering but I have
enjoyed my time at West Ham and I have played in every league game for them
since February last year. But it's really up to the two clubs and what West
Ham want to see happen. If they choose to sell me then it's up to both clubs
to agree a fee and we'll see if that happens but I have no desire to move."

"I haven't really given the thought of going back to Sunderland much
consideration because I am still a West Ham player. "I had a lot of good
times there but it was time for me to move on and I embarked on a new
challenge. In football you never say never but at the minute I can't say
that will happen to me."

Galatasaray still in the hunt for Hammers defender Neill - Daily Mail

Last updated at 10:44 PM on 10th July 2008

Galatasaray are pressing ahead in their £4m chase for Lucas Neill — despite
initial resistance from the player. The Turkish side, who signed Harry
Kewell last week, are aware that West Ham want to cut their budget and
believe they can strike a deal. With Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil destined
for Fulham, Neill's departure could free up vital funds. However,
Sunderland's £4.5m bid for George McCartney has been rejected. McCartney,
27, said: 'I would like to stay at West Ham. I have no desire to leave.
'When clubs show an interest in you it is flattering but it's really up to

Galatasaray chase Aussie Lucas Neill - news.com.au
July 11, 2008 08:01am

TURKISH club Galatasaray, who signed Harry Kewell last week, are now on the
track of Australian defender Lucas Neill. The club first approached Premier
League club West Ham United about Neill last week amid reports the Hammers
want to cut their wage bill. And although Neill, who is captain of West Ham,
said he did not want to go to Turkey, Galatasaray are pushing on with their
bid and have offered about $9 million, according to reports in Britain.
Neill, 30, who joined the Hammers from Blackburn Rovers in early 2007, is
one of the top earners at Upton Park. And with manager Alan Curbishley under
pressure to cut costs, $9 million could be too tempting to turn down.

McCartney may make quick return
Simon Williams
The Guardian, Friday July 11, 2008

George McCartney, the West Ham full-back, says he wants to stay at Upton
Park despite the chance of a return to his former club Sunderland.
Sunderland had a £4.5m offer turned down by West Ham earlier this week but
the view at the Stadium of Light is that they will still be able to get the
27-year-old provided West Ham manage to sign Nicky Shorey from Reading.

McCartney acknowledges that he could be sold if Shorey arrives but the
Northern Ireland international is keen to remain at the club he joined from
Sunderland two years ago for £1m. He said: "I would like to stay at West
Ham. I have no desire to leave. When clubs show an interest in you it is
flattering but I have enjoyed my time at West Ham and I have played in every
league game for them since February last year. But it's really up to the two
clubs to decide what will happen."

Holding The Pail - Just Like My Dreams

You can only milk a cow so long, then you're left holding the pail. Here is
this morning's not altogether nourishing collection of exiguous transfer
window gossip...

Despite declarations of contentment from George McCartney and Lucas Neill,
it seems the media are every bit as keen as the interested clubs to see West
Ham United's fullbacks sold. The Guardian insist Sunderland are preparing to
make an improved offer to re-sign McCartney after the club turned down £4.5
million for the Irishman. The Times posit that Alan Curbishley is already
searching for another left back and has made an approach to Leicester City
regarding Joe Mattock, the England Under-21 player.

McCartney, 27, made his debut for Sunderland in 2000 and went on to make 157
appearances for the Black Cats in all competitions, before joining West Ham
United two years ago in a player-plus-cash deal which saw Clive Clarke and
£600,000 come to Wearside. Roy Keane has made signing a left-back one of his
priorities this summer after being forced to use versatile centre-back Danny
Collins in that role for virtually the whole of last season.

Sources on Wearside are claiming the chances of McCartney moving hinge
solely on the Hammers securing a replacement. If United can persuade
relegated Reading to part with England full-back Nicky Shorey, McCartney
could be allowed to leave. West Ham could not convince Reading to sell
Shorey with a bid of £5 million last summer, but the fact that the Royals
are now facing up to life in the Championship may change things – although
Reading have already warned that the 27-year-old will not be allowed to
leave on the cheap. Reading director of football Nicky Hammond said
recently: "People are working on the assumption that Nicky Shorey will move
on during the summer. But it simply has not gone that far. Nobody has made
us an offer for the player and even if they do, it does not mean he will
go." West Ham would also likely face competition for Shorey, with Portsmouth
among the clubs thought to be keen.

On a similar note, the Mail report that Galatasaray are pressing ahead in
their £4million pursuit of Lucas Neill — despite initial resistance from the
player. The article states that the Turkish side, who signed Harry Kewell
last week, are aware that West Ham United want to cut their budget and
believe they can strike a deal. They suggest that with Bobby Zamora and John
Pantsil destined for Fulham, Neill's departure could free up more vital
funds.

In other news, West Ham United keep getting mentioned in dispatches
regarding Everton striker Andy Johnson. In the latest effort by the Mirror
it is claimed we are still the preferred destination for the player but look
likely to miss out in the ensuing transfer scramble through an inability to
raise sufficient funds. Several other media outlets have contented
themselves with cold rehashes of the Valon Behrami 'snub', while more
enterprising speculation has linked the club with USA defender Oguchi
'Gooch' Onyewu and Venezuelan winger Juan Arango.

Finally, no one else seems to be picking up the Balint Bajner story that I

A New Striker Arrives? - Just Like My Dreams

West Ham United have swooped to sign Hungarian striker Balint Bajner,
according to The Sun. The 17-year-old was on trial at Upton Park in April
and impressed by bagging two goals in a friendly. Bajner arrives via
Romanian second division side CF Liberty Oradea, where he is reputed to be
highly-rated by the coaching staff. If confirmed, Bajner would be the second
teenager to sign for the Hammers in a week after Iceland Under-21 defender
Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson, also 17, arrived from HK Kopavogur last Friday.

Bajner could face Irons and England U-19 duo James Tomkins and Freddie Sears
when he features for Hungary in the UEFA U-19 Championships, which start in
the Czech Republic next week. Hungary coach Tibor Sisa certainly anticipates
big things from the talented frontman. Sisa said: "Balint is a very good
young player who is heading for the top. He is technically gifted and
developing well. In spring his club sent him over to England for a trial. He
did well then and I am sure he will be a success."

It is unclear at this stage what role Gianluca Nani has played in this
latest capture, but if confirmed, it does underline the club's new manifesto
of recruiting exciting young prospects from the global market. It is in this
spirit that the talented youngster would be seen as one for the future, as
oppose to a direct replacement for the soon departing Bobby Zamora.

Elsewhere, George McCartney insists he has no intention of returning to
Sunderland, despite talk of a £4.5 million offer from The Black Cats. The
Northern Ireland international swapped the North East for the East End of
London in the summer of 2006 and in his two seasons at Upton Park has become
one of the club's most dependable performers. Such was his form last season,
the 27-year-old was even linked with a shock move to Italian giants Milan as
well as Rangers of The SPL.

It is rumoured that Sunderland manager Roy Keane has now tabled a £4.5
million bid for the left back but he insists he is not looking to leave The
Hammers at present. "I would like to stay at West Ham,"McCartney told the
Belfast Telegraph. "I have no desire to leave. When clubs show an interest
in you it is flattering but I have enjoyed my time at West Ham and I have
played in every league game for them since February last year. But it's
really up to the two clubs and what West Ham want to see happen. If they
choose to sell me then it's up to both clubs to agree a fee and we'll see if
that happens but I have no desire to move. I haven't really given the
thought of going back to Sunderland much consideration because I am still a
West Ham player. I had a lot of good times there but it was time for me to
move on and I embarked on a new challenge. In football you never say never
but at the minute I can't say that will happen to me."

West Ham United reserve goalkeeper Richard Wright is expected to leave the
Hammers though, with Championship side Ipswich Town- the club where the
former England International started his career- the likely destination.
30-year-old Wright spent seven years at Portman Road making 240 appearances
for the Tractor Boys, before a £6million transfer to Arsenal in 2001.
However, despite earning his two England caps while being with the Gunners,
he failed to make the number one spot his own at Highbury and was sold to
Everton a year later. Wright spent five years at Goodison Park, but a stream
of injuries saw him lose out to former Manchester United keeper Tim Howard
for the number one jersey. He moved to West Ham United last season, but has
failed to make a single appearance for the Irons while playing second fiddle
to Robert Green, with Wright being loaned out to Southampton for the latter
part of last season. Reports suggest that Ipswich manager Jim Magilton will
complete a £500,000 deal for the former Portman Road favourite within the
next two weeks.

Compensation or no compensation? - SheffieldUtdMad.co.uk
By Jamie Furniss Thursday, 10th July 2008

The hearing on the case involving Sheffield United's relegation from the
Premier League will he solved in September...
The case has now been going on for a year while Kevin McCabe and United
officials are fighting a way of being awarded compensation after the fiasco
involving the illegal deal which West Ham made with Argentinean Carlos Tevez
and Javier Mascherano who now plays for Liverpool. Blades Chairman Kevin
McCabe said: "It's down to the panel to make their award which should be
September. The formal arbitration hearing was concluded last month but
there'll be one more day at the end of July for further oral submissions."
On the final day of season 2006/2007 Tevez secured West Ham's fate when he
slotted the ball past Van Der Sar at Old Trafford to see the Hammers survive
and subsequently sent the Blades down. Options in the arbitration last year
was to replace the Blades in the top flight and send the Hammers down,
compensation or/and West Ham to be docked points. Neither happened as a
£5.5m fine was the punishment. That punishment isn't enough from the Blades
side of things so the fight for compensation continues.

U18s look to new season - WHUFC
The West Ham United youth side will play their first competitive game of the new season on 23 August
10.07.2008

Tony Carr is building up for the new Under-18 season in Group A of the FA Premier Academy League with the success of last year's campaign still fresh in the mind.

The U18s have all been back in this week, including the new intake stepping up from the U16s, for fitness tests before getting down to full training. There is just over six weeks to go until the first competitive game - a glamour home match against Group C's Manchester United at Little Heath on Saturday 23 August before a trip to Leeds United a week later. Both of these matches are among ten games over the course of the campaign that will see Carr's team test themselves against teams from outside their league although the results do count for the final standings.

The remaining 18 games will see West Ham United play home and away against Group A rivals Arsenal, Charlton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Ipswich, Norwich, Portsmouth and Southampton. Last season, Carr's youngsters enjoyed a tremendous run and were only just pipped by Arsenal to the title. The season is scheduled to conclude away to Tottenham Hotspur, who compete in Group B, on Saturday 2 May. The team will also compete in the FA Youth Cup from the third-round stage. Click here for fixtures, although please note all are subject to change.

Blades set to hear Tevez outcome - BBC

Sheffield United will find out in September if they will be compensated after their complaints over West Ham's registration of Carlos Tevez. The Hammers survived in the Premier League in 2007 at the Blades' expense after being fined £5.5m instead of being docked points. Chairman Kevin McCabe said he remains hopeful about the upcoming verdict. "It's down to the panel to make their award which should be September," he told BBC Radio Sheffield. "The formal arbitration hearing was concluded last month but there'll be one more day at the end of July for further oral submissions."
The Blades said they were unfairly demoted from the top flight after West Ham were found guilty of breaching Premier League regulations in the signing of Argentine Tevez and his compatriot Javier Mascherano. Rather than being docked points by the three-man arbitration panel, the Hammers were fined £5.5m and went on to survive the drop on the final day, while United were relegated. In July 2007 the High Court refused United leave to appeal the panel's decision over the affair. But McCabe has continued the club's fight for a financial settlement and it is being heard by a Football Association tribunal.

Further delay in hypocrites case - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 10th July 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham United will now have to wait until September before finding out whether or not the club will be forced to pay 'compensation' to Sheffield United as a result of the Tevezgate case. The Blades have taken the Hammers to a tribunal as a result of their relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2006/07 season - despite having nobody to blame but themselves after fielding weakened sides at certain points of the season and, crucially, losing at home to Wigan on the final day - a result which condemned them to the Championship, regardless of results elsewhere. Despite these (and other) facts irksome Blades Chairman Kevin McCabe has refused to accept responsibility, claiming instead that SHeffield United's relegation was the fault of Carlos Tevez for doing what he was paid to do - score goals.
Talking to BBC Radio Sheffield this morning, McCabe said: "It's down to the panel to make their award which should be September. "The formal arbitration hearing was concluded last month but there'll be one more day at the end of July for further oral submissions."

* Sheffield United were charged with hypocrisy after it was revealed that a 'gentlemen's agreement' between the Blades and Watford prevented Steve Kabba from playing against his old team when the two clubs met just months after Kabba joined the Hornets - a clear infringement of rules regarding third-party influence, which the Blades are basing their case against West Ham United on.

Bobby Zamora was in court yesterday to answer charges that he paid a former team mate to accept responsibility for a driving offence. Zamora - set to finalise a move to fellow Premier League outfit Fulham this week - was in court along with former team mate Teddy Sheringham, who is charged with the same offence. Both players have been charged with allowing former Hammer Shaun Newton to take responsibility for the speeding ticket, which arose after Sheringham's car was recorded travelling at 64mpg in a 40mph zone. Newton - who was banned from football after a routine drugs test found cocaine in his system back in 2006 - is said to have accepted £50 to take the blame for the incident.
Sheringham told Croydon Crown Court: "I was moaning about getting the ticket and Shaun Newton said, 'Give me £50 and I'll sort it out'."
Newton - who left West Ham in March last year - denied nine charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice. The case continues today.

You're nicked: top five Hammers in trouble

1. Bobby Moore

The 1970 World Cup Finals couldn't have got off to a worse start for England captain Bobby Moore when he was arrested for the alleged theft of a bracelet from the Green Fire jewellers shop in Bogota, Columbia, where the England team were preparing for the Mexican tournament. England boss Alf Ramsay claimed it was a stich up but Moore still had to endure a Columbian court before being released after the shop assistant who originally blew the whstle claimed that she saw Moore put the bracelet in a jacket pocket - it was later proved that Moore's training top, which he wore at the time had no pockets.

2. Mark Ward

Mark Ward spent three years at West Ham between 1985 and 1988 but is currently spending time at Her Majesty's Pleasure after receiving an eight-year sentence for drug dealing in 2005. Ward claims that the house he rented that was used to stash drugs was done so on behalf of someone else. Police - who found more than half-a-million pounds worth of cocaine at the property during a raid - disagreed.

3. Anton Ferdinand

Young Anton fell foul of the law in November 2006 when he was charged with assault and violent conduct following an incident outside Faces nightclub two months earlier. A jury cleared him and friend Edward Dawkins of all charges a year later.

4. Harry Redknapp

Wheeler-dealer 'arry was nicked in November 2007 by Police conducting a dawn raid on his house after he was accused of corruption. The 60-year-old former Hammers player and manager was eventually released without charge but the timing of the arrest - coincidentally when England were looking for a new manager, a position which Redknapp was one of the favourites to land - was enough to scupper his chances of leading the national team.

5. Glen Johnson

The former Academy trainee was nicked in January 2007 after being accused of stealing a toilet seat and other bathroom accessories from his local B&Q. He was fined £80 on the spot for the misdemeanour.

Former Hammers star Frank McAvennie is once again in trouble with the law after being arrested for affray and disorderly conduct. McAvennie, 48, was nicked on the Isle of Man in the early hours of Saturday morning after a punch-up with 23-year-old local Ian Moffat. Lee Watson, the event organiser claimed that Moffat has been harrassing McAvennie and former goalkeeper Andy Goram, who were on the Isle of Man to take part in a charity football match.
Talking to the Daily Record, he said: "Both Andy Goram and Frank McAvennie were perfect gentlemen in the way they agreed to take part. The problem was a local man wanted to get involved with these two football legends. He probably thought that because he is a customer of ours, that gave him licence to do as he pleased. "At first, both ex-players were happy to talk to him and sign autographs but as the night wore on, he was getting louder and louder and basically overstayed his welcome. "Yes, there were a couple of incidents that led to police action. But this whole thing was down to the behaviour of one man, and that man was not Frank McAvennie or Andy Goram."

Another unnamed source backed Watson's version of events, adding: "McAvennie and Goram went out for the night on Friday and they were happily playing pool and signing autographs for fans. But there was a local guy with them and no one seemed to know what he was doing there. "Frankly, he looked to be a hanger-on and both Macca and Goram were getting agitated by some of this guy's antics. "At some point, an argument began and things turned sour. They had visited several pubs and it is possible they had asked the guy to leave but he refused. "There was an incident in the toilet of a pub, followed by another when Macca was the victim of an alleged assault as he tried to get into a taxi."

McAvennie and his cohorts spent the night in jail before being released. No charges are thought to have been brought against them.

George McCartney has played down reports linking him with a return to Sunderland, saying he is happy at West Ham. West Ham are reported to have turned down a bid in the region of £4.5million from Sunderland for the Northern Ireland international. McCartney was one of West Ham's most consistent performers last season and his performances caught the attention of Black Cats boss Roy Keane, who is keen to lure him back to Wearside. Keane's frustrations continue as Hammers turn down Sunderland bid for McCartney - Daily Mail
By Colin Young
Last updated at 2:18 PM on 10th July 2008

West Ham have turned a £4.5million bid for George McCartney from Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international, who started his career on Wearside and was sold for £1.6 million two years ago, was a near ever-present at Upton Park last season. And he is seen as the ideal solution to Sunderland's problem left-back area where manager Roy Keane used Wales international Danny Collins for the majority of games last season. But Hammers boss Alan Curbishley is unwilling to part company with McCartney, 27, who was sold within weeks of Niall Quinn returning to Sunderland as chairman. Although he has given permission to Fulham to speak to Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil, Sunderland may have to increase their offer considerably to force Curbishley to do the same with McCartney. It has been a frustrating start to the latest transfer window for Keane who has so far failed to lure Darren Bent, Andy Johnson, Stephen Hunt, Aiden McGeady and Kevin Doyle to the Stadium of Light, despite being armed with a £50 million budget.

Cats' McCartney bid hanging on Hammers swoop
Jul 10 2008 by James Hunter, Evening Chronicle

SUNDERLAND'S chances of bringing George McCartney back to Wearside hinge on West Ham being able to sign a replacement for the Northern Ireland international. Reports from the capital suggest that Sunderland have had a £4.5m bid for McCartney turned down by the Hammers. But if West Ham can persuade relegated Reading to part with England full-back Nicky Shorey, McCartney could be allowed to leave. West Ham could not convince Reading to sell Shorey with a bid of £5m last summer, but the fact that the Royals are now facing up to life in the Championship may change things – although Reading have already warned that the 27-year-old will not be allowed to leave on the cheap. Reading director of football Nicky Hammond said recently: "People are working on the assumption that Nicky Shorey will move on during the summer. "But it simply has not gone that far. "Nobody has made us an offer for the player and even if they do, it does not mean he will go."
West Ham face competition for Shorey, however, with Portsmouth also keen. The Chronicle understands that McCartney (pictured) would be keen on a return to Sunderland – the club where he started his career after coming through the ranks on Wearside – if a deal can be worked out between the clubs.
McCartney, 27, made his debut for Sunderland in 2000 and went on to make 157 appearances for the Black Cats in all competitions, before joining West Ham two years ago in a player-plus-cash deal which saw Clive Clarke and £600,000 come to Wearside. Roy Keane has made signing a left-back one of his priorities this summer after being forced to use versatile centre-back Danny Collins in that role for virtually the whole of last season.
Collins proved himself more than capable of playing in that position – and his consistent displays were recognised by being named as Player of the Year by the club's Supporters' Association – but Keane wants to bring in a specialist. Meanwhile, Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon says the Black Cats must set their sights high next season by aiming for a top-10 finish. Sunderland finished sixth-bottom in their first season back in the Premier League, but Scotland international Gordon is looking for the club to push on from there. He said: "I'm not sure it will be more difficult. "I think it will be a challenge for us, but we've got to set our sights a bit higher than that this season. "We've got to look to break into that group of clubs just above that and steer well clear of relegation and push for the top half of the league."

West Ham's Pantsil and Zamora talk to Fulham - icons.com

West Ham have given striker Bobby Zamora and full-back John Pantsil permission to speak to Fulham about possible moves. Neither player was a first-team regular last season. West ham chief executive Scott Duxbury felt a move would be in the club's and their best interests. Duxbury said: "We recognise they had limited first-team opportunities last season. They want regular football. We have given them permission to speak to Fulham with a view to a move." Pantsil has failed to establish himself in his two seasons at the club, making just seven appearances. Zamora moved to Upton Park in 2003 but found himself sidelined last season, making 14 appearances. A statement on West Ham's official website reads: "The club are looking forward to an exciting new season with a fully-fit squad, including the return of Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy along with Dean Ashton secured on a long-term contract.
"Added to the form of Carlton Cole and the emergence of Freddie Sears, the decision has been made to let Fulham speak to the two players."

McCartney intent on staying with the Hammers - Guardian Series

WEST Ham defender George McCartney has insisted that he is happy with life at Upton Park and has no intention of leaving. Speculation has been mounting that Sunderland boss Roy Keane is eager to take the 27-year-old back to the north-east. The Black Cats boss is believed to have tabled a £4.5million bid for the Northern Ireland international and, after seeing it rejected by the Hammers, is ready to go back with an improved offer. However, McCartney - who played in every league and cup game for the Irons last season and came second in the club's player of the year awards - says that he wants to stay with the east Londoners. "I would like to stay at West Ham, I have no desire to leave," he told the Belfast Telegraph. Wright heading back to Tractor Boys - Guardian Series

WEST Ham shot-stopper Richard Wright is expected to leave Upton Park and re-join the club he started his career with, Ipswich Town. Reports have suggested that a £500,000 deal will be completed within a fortnight. The ex-England international spent six years with the Tractor Boys and made almost 300 appearances before a £6million switch to Arsenal in 2001. But he failed to make the grade with the Gunners and moved to Everton a year later.
However, despite starting his career as number one choice at Goodison Park, a series of injuries has since blighted his career. Alan Curbishley signed the 30-year-old last summer after he was released by Everton but, with Robert Green in fine form, the stopper's chances were limited. He was shipped out on loan to Southampton in March for the remainder of the season. Wright to Sign From West Ham in Days - Report - thise Were The Days
Thursday 10 Jul 2008 12:12:52 by Phil

Keeper Richard Wright is expected to leave West Ham to join the Blues within the next 10 days, according to a report this lunchtime. Wright is not quoted in the piece but is said to see no obstacles preventing him from returning to his old club.

TWTD first reported that the 30-year-old was back on Town's radar in March when former keeper-coach Andy Rhodes was spotted watching West Ham's reserves. The Blues are believed to be paying West Ham a fee of £500,000 for the Ipswich-born stopper, with the deal likely to go ahead once Robert Green's Hammers' future is sorted and perhaps after another keeper is added to the Premier League side's ranks. Wright's return to Portman Road has stalled in recent weeks due to interest in Green from Aston Villa and Blackburn and the Blues had looked at other options. Preston confirmed that an enquiry had been made regarding Andrew Lonergan last week, although they denied claims of a Town bid. German sources reported over the weekend that Wolfsburg keeper Simon Jentzsch was interesting the Blues. A local newspaper report this morning claimed that Wolfsburg boss Felix Magath was now unlikely to allow Jentzsch to leave his club, at least not for a very large fee, although there have been no reports along those lines in Germany. The 32-year-old is very much out of favour at his current club and had been offered out on loan to Turkish side Antalyaspor for a fee believed to be €200-€300,000 (£160-£240,000), but the former German U21 international turned the move down. Meanwhile, released Town keeper Nick Colgan says he's still looking for a new side: "I have been in the UK now for 17 years and I have never been in this position where I was not fixed up with a club in July. When I left Chelsea, I joined Bournemouth straight away. "I am officially unemployed. The mortgage and other bills need to be paid, so I am open to offers and I hope something rears its ugly head soon."

George McCartney last night insisted he has no desire to leave West Ham - even though Sunderland have tabled an improved £4.5million offer for the left-back. The Hammers have rejected the bid from the Black Cats and the 27-year-old says he's happy to stay put at Upton Park. The Northern Ireland defender, who has also been linked with Rangers, has been one of the most consistent performers at the east London club but now his former club want him back. McCartney has clearly won the admiration of Sunderland manager Roy Keane but he is loving life at West Ham. "I would like to stay at West Ham," he said. "I have no desire to leave. When clubs show an interest in you it is flattering but I have enjoyed my time at West Ham and I have played in every league game for them since February last year. "But it's really up to the two clubs and what West Ham want to see happen. If they choose to sell me then it's up to both clubs to a gree a fee and we'll see if that happens but I have no desire to move."
McCartney arrived at Upton Park from Sunderland in 2006 in a four-year deal worth £1million. The Hammers paid £600,000 for the Belfast man in a swap deal which saw Clive Clarke move in the opposite direction. A former Black Cats skipper, he played 157 times for the team during an eight-year spell. "I haven't really given the thought of going back to Sunderland much consideration because I am still a West Ham player," he added. "I had a lot of good times there but it was time for me to move on and I embarked on a new challenge. In football you never say never but at the minute I can't say that will happen to me."

Sunderland are also hoping to secure a deal for Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans.

Money (that's what West Ham want) as they look to sell McCartney back to Sunderland - Daily Mail
By Sportsmail Reporter

West Ham could make a big profit on George McCartney with his former club Sunderland expected to raise their £4.5million offer for the left-back.
Sunderland sold him for £1.5m two years ago but now want him back and although their opening bid was rejected a larger one could be successful as Alan Curbishley has been told he must trim his squad this summer. McCartney was sold following their relegation but a return to Wearside under Roy Keane is thought to appeal to the player although he signed a new contract last year. Among other players likely to be leaving are defender John Pantsil and striker Bobby Zamora, who have both been given permission to talk to Fulham.

Christian not keen on England - Setanta
by Billy Leahy, 10 July 2008

Nantes winger Christian Wilhelmsson has dismissed speculation that he could sign for West Ham. The Sweden international has no intention of returning to England after an unhappy spell with Bolton Wanderers. Following another loan stint, with Deportivo La Coruna, the wide man has his sights firmly fixed on a transfer to Spain or Italy. "I'm going back to Nantes," said Wilhelmsson to Sportbladet. "I'll be back in France after the weekend. It is mostly for my own sake. "I, myself, want to start training. I cannot be on holidays all of the time! "Nantes want to come to the best possible outcome for all parties. They understand that I am not happy there. "There are still a lot of interested clubs that want to talk. "Spanish and Italian football suits me best. It is there that I absolutely want to continue my career."

FUL SPEED AHEAD AS ZAMORA SIGNS - Daily Express
Thursday July 10,2008
By Frank Wiechula

BOBBY Zamora is to quit West Ham and join Fulham for £6.5 million as the club splash out after their great escape on the final day of last season. Striker Zamora's transfer, which is subject to a medical, should be completed within the next 48 hours. It means that Fulham, who survived in the Premier League thanks to their goal difference, have a ready-made replacement for Brian McBride, who has returned to America. Fulham had been looking to sign Zamora, 27, for some time and beat off competition from a number of other clubs to secure his services. West Ham will also be happy with the money for a player who was injured for six months of last season and who scored just once in 14 appearances. They are also well stocked in attack. Dean Ashton recently signed a new long-term deal and Craig Bellamy, who made only nine appearances last season due to injury, is back to full fitness. Carlton Cole showed signs of class last term and there was also the emergence of exciting young forward Freddie Sears. West Ham will continue to look for new additions too, but fans will not forget the priceless contribution of Zamora, who scored 40 goals in his 152 appearances. He joined from Tottenham in February 2004 in the deal which took Jermain Defoe to White Hart Lane. Zamora scored four goals in the last three matches of that season – including the winner in the Championship play-off final victory over Preston, which returned West Ham to the Premier League. Then, aided and abetted by Carlos Tevez, Zamora scored five times in 10 games, as West Ham won seven of their last nine Premier League matches in the 2006-07 campaign to just avoid relegation. Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has also been given permission to talk to West Ham defender John Pantsil. Hodgson has also opened talks with Rosenborg for their right-back Fredrik Stoor, 24, who played in each of Sweden's three games at Euro 2008. Rosenborg head of media Nils Heldal said: "Fulham came to talk about him yesterday and there is still an open channel [of communication]. "The clubs don't agree on the valuation of the player at the moment but something could happen very shortly."
Collins John, Fulham's Dutch striker loaned to Leicester and Watford last season, will be given one final chance to make it alongside Zamora, following McBride's departure and injury to Diomansy Kamara. Hammers manager Alan Curbishley, meanwhile, hopes for a massive fitness boost to his squad this season, after they suffered with nightmare injury troubles last term. None of his new signings at the time, midfielders Kieron Dyer (three) and Julien Faubert (eight) or striker Bellamy (nine), managed double figures in appearances and there were other enforced senior absences. Curbishley, who was speaking in the club's review of the 2007-08 season DVD, said: "It has been a very difficult season. I've been at the club 18 months and I feel as if every week has been tough. "But I've got to get on with it and I'm one of those people who believes that the next game is another opportunity to send everybody home happy. "And my big thing is that, this summer, I need to get those injured players fit, to have return dates for them so that I can plan for next season. "If you're asking me what I'm looking forward to, with regards to next season, I am looking forward to a fully-fit squad. So let's see what we've got because I know that we're going to enjoy better times. "I've got a squad – when they are fit – that can compete in the Premier League and I'm very enthusiastic about that."

Hammers striker Bellamy under lock and key? - Streatham Guardian
By Stuart Amos

Hampton & Richmond skipper Dean Wells reckons he may need a lock and key to keep West Ham United striker Craig Bellamy under wraps when they line up against each other next week. Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has promised to bring his full Premier League starting line-up to the Beveree for Thursday's friendly against former Boleyn Ground favourite Alan Devonshire's Beavers. The game has been arranged as a reward for Hampton's run to the Blue Square South play-off final last season, which ended in a 2-0 defeat to Eastbourne Borough. Welsh international Bellamy - and his illustrious team mates - are expected to start their pre-season programme in front of a record crowd at Station Road before heading off on a North American tour. Hampton have performed well against professional outfits from Chelsea, Arsenal and near-neighbours Brentford in recent years, as they have climbed up the leagues. And Wells, who expects to sweat some of his eight pound target weight-loss off against the Premier League stars, is prepared for another busy night. "We don't tend to be star struck when it comes to playing big teams, but on this occasion I expect to be chasing the ball around for 90 minutes to be honest," he said. "It is fair enough playing against professional reserve and youth teams, but this will be a totally different ball game. "It will be a good test and we are looking forward to it, but if I got into a race with Bellamy there will be only one winner. "I think the only way I'll get close to him as if I handcuff myself to him. I'll bring a pair with me in case."
The euphoria surrounding the big match has been tempered by news Kelvin MacIntosh has followed Alan Inns and Elliott Godfrey out of the Beveree exit door. The experienced midfielder is to take a year out of the game having taken a job in Staffordshire. And with Chelmsford City, AFC Wimbledon, Havant & Waterlooville and Newport County splashing the cash in the Blue Square South this summer, Wells is expecting a tough campaign ahead. "Because of our success last year teams know more about us and we will be one of the teams to beat," he added. "Dev has brought in some quality signings, but we have lost some big players as well. It is going to be tough to repeat or better last season. "Other teams are throwing a lot of money at it. I'm sure if Dev had their sort of budget we would win the league by 30 points"

Teddy Sheringham implicated in speeding ticket scam - the spoiler.com
July 10th, 2008 · No Comments

During his days at West Ham, Shaun Newton received a seven month ban for lapping up a little too much tasty cocaine. The midfielder, who is currently unemployed, now finds himself in more trouble, as he stands accused of nine charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice: [Teddy Sheringham], 42, said ex-West Ham colleague Shaun Newton offered to "get rid" of the ticket after he was clocked at 64mph in a 40mph zone in 2005. Sheringham told Croydon Crown Court: "I was moaning about getting the ticket, and Shaun Newton said, 'Give me £50 and I'll sort it out'."
Ex-West Ham player, Bobby Zamora, 27, said he paid Newton to "have a look" at a ticket. Allegedly, Newton helped teammates escape fines by claiming fictitious drivers were actually behind the wheel. We can't say too much, as legal proceedings are still active on this case, but if any illegal activity is proven, let's hope the judge throws the book at them. All too often, cocky footballers believe they are above the rules that govern the rest of society, and this would bring them right back down to earth.

Sunderland in for George - think carefully Curbs - clubfanzine.com
Thursday 10 Jul 2008 10:34:08 by Tony Watson

Sunderland have had a £4.5 million bid for George McCartney turned down. The Black Cats are thought to be keen on bringing the Irish defender back to The Stadium of Light after selling him to the Hammers 3 years ago. McCartney was a consistent performer last season and he won runner-up Hammer of the Year. Also, being the only left back at the club Curbs has decided he wants to keep him. However, an increased bid may tempt Curbs to sell up, many have touted Reading full back Nicky Shorey as a replacement – Romford born Shorey is a Hammers fan and would welcome a move back to the Premiership with his boyhood club.

Having heard the news of the offer from Sunderland for McCartney I have to admit I nearly fell off my chair and I was even more surprised to see we rejected it. It should have accepted surely! He is an OK full back and done well for us last season but he is not a top calibre player and in order to progress we have to sell the mediocre players and bring in better and there are better for that price tag.

Irons turn down Black Cats bid for McCartney - Guardian Series

WEST HAM have rejected an approach from Sunderland for defender George McCartney. Reports from Wearside claim Roy Keane tempted the Hammers board with a bid of £4.5 million, but was told that the ex-Mackem was not for sale. McCartney spent nine years with Sunderland, and made over 150 appearances, before a £1m move to Upton Park in 2006. The Northern Ireland international was one of the Irons' most consistent performers last season - he played in every league and cup game and came runner-up in the club's player of the year awards. That has put McCartney at the top of Keane's wanted list, and it is expected that the former Manchester United man will wade back in with an improved offer. But Irons boss Alan Curbishley is unlikely to let McCartney leave until a replacement is brought in.

Statement on Zamora approach - WHUFC
West Ham United have agreed to let Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil talk to
Fulham about a possible transfer
09.07.2008

West Ham United can confirm that the club has received an approach from
Fulham for the transfer of Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil.

The club is looking forward to an exciting new season with a fully-fit squad
including the return of Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy along with Dean Ashton
secured on a long-term contract. Added to the form of Carlton Cole and the
emergence of Freddie Sears, the decision has been made to let Fulham speak
to the two players. West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "We recognise
that Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil have had limited first-team opportunities
last season at West Ham United. They want to play regular first-team
football and we have given permission for them to speak to Fulham with a
view to concluding a move."

Hard work at Chadwell Heath - WHUFC
Kieron Dyer is getting closer to a return to full training as the players
step up their pre-season programme
09.07.2008

The first team are being put through their paces with intensive double
sessions as they enter the second week of the pre-season programme at
Chadwell Heath.

With virtually the entire squad involved, the signs are also good for those
working their way back to full fitness. England midfielder Kieron Dyer is
due to be back in full training by the time the squad return from North
America and the games against Columbus Crew and the Major League Soccer
All-Stars on 20 and 24 July respectively. He has made excellent progress
over the summer as he recovers from his double leg-break suffered just over
a year ago and will stay behind at Chadwell Heath to continue his fitness
work in readiness for the new campaign.

Another welcome sight back on the practice pitches has been James Collins
who has been joining in full running sessions and ball work with his
team-mates. His Welsh international team-mate Danny Gabbidon is also back in
training and is running. With James Tomkins and Freddie Sears set to join up
with England for Under-19 duty, the only other two players not at Chadwell
Heath are Freddie Ljungberg after his Euro 2008 exertions and Jonathan
Spector who has begun his rehabilitation programme after hip surgery in the
United States.

Tomkins expects with England - WHUFC
Young centre-back James Tomkins is relishing the prospect of next week's
UEFA U19 Euro finals
09.07.2008

James Tomkins is getting ready to play an integral part of England's bid to
win the 2008 European Under-19 Championship when the finals begin against
the host nation Czech Republic on 14 July.

Having kept himself in shape since the end of the season and then stepped up
his training after returning to club duty, Tomkins is in good shape for the
Young Lions. He said: "I am looking forward to going away with England, it
will be a good tournament. But we are not going there to make up the numbers
we are going out to win it. We did well in the qualifiers so we are full of
confidence."

England coach Brian Eastick named Tomkins and club-mate Freddie Sears in his
18-man selection, with both players having been instrumental in qualifying.
It is thought the duo will start when things get under way at 4.30pm London
time on Monday. "There have been a few changes to the side but the people
coming have done well so there is no reason why we can't do well," Tomkins
added. "It is obviously nice to have a club team-mate there in the shape of
Freddie but we are a close-knit bunch who all get on well together."

In Group B of the eight-nation tournament, England will also take on Italy
on 17 July and Greece on 20 July in Jablonec and Liberec respectively in the
hope of reaching the semi-finals. The opening game against the Czechs will
be shown live on Eurosport. Group A comprises Spain, Italy, Greece and
Hungary.

Hammers clear way for Zamora exit - BBC

West Ham have granted Fulham permission to speak with striker Bobby Zamora
and defender John Pantsil. Zamora was restricted to 14 games last season,
scoring one goal, while Pantsil has started just seven Premier League games
since joining the club in 2006. "We recognise they had limited first-team
opportunities last season," said West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury.
"They want regular football and we have given them permission to speak to
Fulham with a view to a move."
A statement on the club's website added: "The club are looking forward to an

contract. "Added to the form of Carlton Cole and the emergence of Freddie
Sears, the decision has been made to let Fulham speak to the two players."
Zamora, who joined the Hammers from Spurs in 2003, has played more than 100
games for the club. Ghana international Pantsil has struggled to establish
himself at Upton Park since joining in 2006, with the majority of his 24
games coming off the bench.

is a former Black Cats captain and played 157 times for the team in an

debut against Iceland in September 2001. McCartney spent two years in
international exile after refusing to play under manager Lawrie Sanchez. He
was angered after Sanchez hinted that he 'picked' his games. McCartney
returned for his country in 2007 after Nigel Worthington took charge.

West Ham have given Fulham permission to speak with striker Bobby Zamora and
full-back John Paintsil after a bid for the pair was accepted on Wednesday
afternoon. No further details are currently available but a figure of around
£6million is believed to be the sum offered by Fulham. Should all parties
reach an agreement the pair could be on their way to South West London by
the weekend.
West Ham United's Scott Duxbury told whufc.com this evening: "We recognise

Paintsil - who was looking to leave the club last summer having barely
featured under Alan Pardew and Alan Curbishley - was one again a fringe
player last season despite earning cult status amongst United fans.
Zamora - who was first linked with a move to Fulham at the beginning of June
- will always be affectionately remembered by Hammers fans for scoring the
goal that saw United return to the Premier League in May 2005 after beating
Preston 1-0 in the Championship Play-Off Final at Cardiff's Millennium

Mackems Mac attack knocked back - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 9th July 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham have rejected a £4.5m bid from Sunderland for full-back George
McCartney. The left-back joined the Hammers from the Black Cats two seasons
ago when Alan Pardew paid a meagre £600,000 plus Clive Clarke for his
services. Since then McCartney has become a firm fixture in United's
defence, making such an impression that Alan Curbishley felt happy to go
through the whole of last season without a dedicated back-up. However claims
that McCartney's wife is unsettled in London led to rumours of Sunderland's
interest, and today's bid is thought to be the second attempt the North
East-based club have made to prise the Northern Irish international away
from London. McCartney was named runner-up Player of the Year in last
season's KUMB Awards and was also named Most Improved Player.

East London is not so wonderful:
the top five West Ham wantaways

1. Marco Boogers

The £1million Dutchman arrived at West Ham in the summer of 1995 on the
strength of a video then manager Harry Redknapp had seen of him in action.
Just minutes into his second game for the Hammers he was sent off for a
vicious tackle on Manchester United's Gary Neville before promptly
disappearing without trace. He was later found living in a caravan claiming
mental illness had driven him from the club. His current whereabouts are
unknown.

2. Joey Beauchamp

The highly-rated youngster joined the Hammers for £1.2million in the summer
of 1994 but claimed he was homesick just weeks later - despite hailing from
Oxford, less than 50 miles away. He was sold to Swindon Town just 58 days
later for £800,000 plus defender Adrian Whitbread. Now 37, Beauchamp can be
seen strutting his stuff for Abingdon Town in the Hellenic League Premier
Division.

3. David Unsworth

'Rhino', as he was affectionately known joined West Ham in 1997 in a
£3million switch from Everton but lasted just a year after his wife claimed
that she was missing Merseyside. Having played just 41 games for the
Hammers, Aston Villa paid £3million for his services. However his stay in
the Midlands was even more short-lived and he returned to Everton a month
later. Having spent last season with Burnley, the 34-year-old is currently a
free agent.

4. Tomas Repka

The oft-criticised burly Czech spent five years with the Hammers but was
looking to return to his home country for the last 18 months of his spell in
East London. Signed from Fiorentina by Glenn Roeder for £5million in 2001,
he was eventually sold to Sparta Prague (where he had played prior to moving
to Italy) for £750,000. Notably moved on his final appearance for West Ham
by a spontaneous burst of applause from the United faithful, Repka later
apologised to Hammers fans for wanting to leave saying 'I am sorry to be
going back home but it has been difficult to be away from my children who go
to school in Prague.' Now 34, Repka still plays for Sparta.

5. Sergei Rebrov

His £11million dream move to Tottenham turned into a nightmare and Rebrov
was snapped up by Alan Pardew in 2004 on a free transfer. However after just
a year with United he was allowed to return to Ukraine to join Dynamo Kiev
having shown little of the promise that persuaded Tottenham to part with 11
big ones. Still playing in the Russian Premier Division, Rebrov - now 34 -
currently represents FC Rubin Kazan.

Fulham move for Hammers duo - SSN
Cottagers allowed to speak with Zamora and Pantsil
By Lewis Rutledge Last updated: 9th July 2008

Fulham have been given permission by West Ham to open talks with Bobby
Zamora and John Pantsil. Cottagers boss Roy Hodgson has been busy trying to
strengthen his squad this summer and has identified the two West Ham players
as key targets. The Hammers received an approach on Wednesday and have
agreed to let Fulham speak with the pair. Zamora moved to Upton Park from
Tottenham in 2004 and has gone on to score 30 goals in 130 appearances for
the club. However, he fell down the pecking order last season and with
competition for places in attack set to be fierce yet again, West Ham are
ready for him to move on. Ghanaian defender Pantsil, who joined West Ham
after an impressive World Cup in 2006, also struggled to hold down a regular
place in the side last season.
"West Ham can confirm the club have received an approach from Fulham for the
transfer of Bobby Zamora and John Pantsil," read a statement on the club's
official website. "The club are looking forward to an exciting new season

Bellamy along with Dean Ashton secured on a long-term contract. "Added to

Anton backs Rio for captaincy - SSN
West Ham's Ferdinand believes brother would thrive for England
By James Dall Last updated: 9th July 2008

West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand believes his brother Rio would
thrive as captain of England. England boss Fabio Capello has rotated the
skipper's armband as part of a policy that will see him name the permanent
captain ahead of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. Manchester United
centre-back Ferdinand was handed the duty for the Italian's second game in
charge against France. Ferdinand faces strong competition from the likes of
Steven Gerrard and John Terry for the role, but his brother feels he is an
ideal candidate. "There are so many reasons why Rio should be England
captain," Hammers' Ferdinand said in The Sun. "For starters, the
consistency in his play last season was unbelievable. He captained United to
the UEFA Champions League and Premier League titles. "I don't think there is
anybody better than him in the world right now. His professionalism is top
dollar - just ask anybody at Manchester United and England. "He has all the
attributes to be England captain. It would be a proud moment for the
Ferdinand family and it would be something he would handle well. It would be
good for the team as well."If he gets the armband, the country will see the
best of him."

Galatasary Focus On Lucas - Goal.com

After capturing the signature of Harry Kewell, Turkish giants Galatasaray
turn their attention to West Ham United captain, Lucas Neill. Lucas Neill
has only been a Hammer for a couple of years now, yet in this short time,
with the exodus of boyhood West Ham fan Nigel Reo Coker, Neill has already
been given the captain's armband - a role that he is relishing, according to
his agent.
Galatasaray would be keen on a move for the regular Australian International
as they look to defend their Turkish crown. It might take a heavily weighted
offer to prise the former Blackburn man away from Upton Park because Lucas
apparently snubbed a move to Anfield, in order to move to West Ham, only 19
months ago, during the 2007 January transfer window.
Paddy Dominguez, the player's agent, echoed these sentiments on fansfc.com,
saying: "It doesn't make sense that a manager who brought Lucas to the club
and installed him as captain would want to sell him after only one year.
Lucas' relationship with Alan Curbishley is good and he is relishing the
role of captain."
Since 1996, Neill has featured 41 times for his national side, Australia.

Zamora and Pantsil could go Cottaging - West Ham Online

This is written with a heavy heart, but WHO Towers understands(Hehe) that
West Ham have given Fulham permission to speak to striker Bobby Zamora and

may hasten to add is better than Kaka, are both looking for regular
first-team football and that's persuaded the Club to allow them permision to
talk to Fulham.
A statement on the club's website reads: West Ham can confirm the club have

Two things spring to mind, I'd be gutted to see them go for non footballing
reasons but understand the economy of letting them go and secondly I wish
Duxbury would stop trying to pick the team.

West Ham are set to allow Bobby Zamora and Johnny Paintsil move across the

The above statement worries me 'the form of Carlton Cole' - no doubt he gave
his all last season when playing but give me Bobby Z over Cole anyday!
Another thing that is mentioned is the emergence of Sears, is he ready to be
part of the ful time set up just yet?? I'm not convinced, a loan spell may
be the best bet for young Freddy as he appears to be a) a bit too
lightweight and b) too inexperienced for us to count on as back up if we are
serious about pushing on for Europe!

Fulham want to pay West Ham a staggering £6.5m for Zamora - Daily Mail
By Simon Cass
Last updated at 10:06 PM on 09th July 2008

Fulham are close to agreeing a staggering £6.5million fee for West Ham
striker Bobby Zamora as replacement for departed skipper Brian McBride.
Zamora, 27, will tie up the move subject to a medical and personal terms
being agreed in a deal which is also likely to include full back John
Pantsil, who has long been surplus to requirements. Fulham boss Roy Hodgson
wants to reinforce his squad in a bid to head off another relegation scrap
next season.
But despite bolstering the strikeforce, the huge sum is likely to shock
Fulham fans. West Ham supporters, too, will be surprised by the fee -
especially considering Pantsil cost £1m two seasons ago and has made just
nine starts since then - although they will be delighted their club finally
have raised some cash to spend in the transfer market. Zamora was prolific
with Brighton in the lower divisions, with 83 goals in 136 appearances, but
has struggled in the top flight. A £1.5m move to Tottenham in 2003 proved
frustrating and 18 months later he was shipped out as part of the deal for
Jermain Defoe having played only 18 times, 11 of these as a substitute. At
Upton Park he did produce flashes of the scoring form which made him a cult
hero at Brighton.
But his 40 goals in 152 West Ham games still represent a modest haul.

Ferdinand convinced West Ham can crack Europe
tribalfootball.com - July 09, 2008

Anton Ferdinand is convinced West Ham can crack Europe next season. The
defender said: "The aim is to finish higher than last season and the next
step has to be Europe. "I can understand why the fans were frustrated. They
pay a lot of money and don't want to see players injured and the team not
playing well. But they still kept behind the team. They know a fully-fit
squad will be a very exciting prospect."

Former Hammers Legend Arrested Over Bar Brawl - Just Like My Dreams

Former West Ham United legend Frank McAvennie missed a charity football
match - because he was banged up after a bust-up in a bar, according to
reports today. The ex-St Mirren, Celtic and Irons striker was in the Isle of
Man for a Manchester United versus Liverpool Legends match and was due to be
a guest striker. He did not take part after being arrested in the early
hours of Saturday.

Manx police said a 48-year-old man who lives in Newcastle was arrested but
would not confirm the defendant's name. A force spokesman said the man had
been charged with affray and disorderly conduct and released on bail to
appear at Douglas Courthouse in August. A 23-year-old local man, arrested in
connection with the same incident, has been charged with affray. Ex-Rangers
and Man United goalkeeper Andy Goram, who was said to have witnessed the
row, did play in the match.

A source said: "McAvennie and Goram went out for the night on Friday and
they were happily playing pool and signing autographs for fans. But there
was a local guy with them and no one seemed to know what he was doing there.
Frankly, he looked to be a hanger-on and both Macca and Goram were getting
agitated by some of this guy's antics. At some point, an argument began and
things turned sour. They had visited several pubs and it is possible they
had asked the guy to leave but he refused. There was an incident in the
toilet of a pub, followed by another when Macca was the victim of an alleged
assault as he tried to get into a taxi."

It is understood the 23-year-old man who has been charged is local man Ian
Moffat. It is believed both Macca and Moffat were held in police cells
overnight.

The game at the Bowl in Douglas, the capital, was billed as the biggest
sporting event on the island "without an engine" - in reference to the TT
race.

Last night, Lee Watson, of Isle of Man company Extreme Art & Gadgets, who
staged the event, said: "This is very unfortunate. Both Andy Goram and Frank
McAvennie were perfect gentlemen in the way they agreed to take part. They
are top guys. The problem was a local man wanted to get involved with these
two football legends. He probably thought that because he is a customer of
ours, that gave him licence to do as he pleased. At first, both ex-players
were happy to talk to him and sign autographs but as the night wore on, he
was getting louder and louder and basically overstayed his welcome. Yes,
there were a couple of incidents that led to police action. But this whole
thing was down to the behaviour of one man, and that man was not Frank
McAvennie or Andy Goram."

Goram, 44, made no comment when he arrived back at Glasgow airport
yesterday.

Signing imminent - but one on the way? - Newham Recorder
09 July 2008

AFTER weeks of speculation and only the signing of youngster Holmar Orn
Eyjolfsson in the bag, West Ham are at last about to make a big-money
signing, writes Dave Evans. The club have been in negotiations with an
international player for the last few weeks and it seems that they are close
to finally capturing the player. It seems though that it is unlikely to be
Icelandic striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, who has been linked with West Ham for
the past couple of years, and who has now been told that he can leave
Barcelona. West Ham seem to be well covered in the striking positions with
Craig Bellamy, Dean Ashton, Bobby Zamora, Carlton Cole and young Freddie
Sears all fit and raring to go, so it would seem more likely that any
purchase may be either in midfield or at full back. The announcement of the
new signing is likely to come during West Ham's tour of the United States
and Canada which begins with a match against Colombus Crew in Ohio on
Sunday.
Insiders at the club are also suggesting that as well as a big-name signing
coming into the club, supporters should expect a big-name to leave in the
next couple of weeks. That would seem to suggest Anton Ferdinand may be out
of the exit door after he was linked with both Aston Villa and Newcastle
United, but it is more likely to be club captain Lucas Neill, who has been
interesting Turkish Champions League side Galatasaray. If that move comes to
fruition then the signing of a new right back would be a top priority for
West Ham, and Technical Director Gianluca Nani has been eyeing Italian full
backs in the last week or so for just such an eventuality.

Paris defender keen on Irons switch - Guardian Series

WEST Ham target Sammy Traore has reiterated his ambition to leave Paris St
Germain for a Premier League club. The 32-year-old defender has previously
said he would 'sign straight away' if Alan Curbishley's men came in with an
offer. Speaking to a French newspaper, he said: "I want to play in England,
and in the top flight. That destination attracts me. "The atmosphere there
is unique. In England there are plenty of scraps to get involved in and I
really like physical battles. "Truly, I see myself going and trying my luck
there." The Malian international has spent his whole footballing career in
the French League and has made 22 appearances for the Parisian club since
joining them in 2006.

Irons could miss out as Coppell threatens to shut Royals shop - Guardian
Series

WEST Ham may be about to lose out on three potential transfer targets after
Reading manager Steve Coppell insisted he won't get bullied into selling his
stars. Alan Curbishley is thought to be monitoring the situation at the
Madjeski Stadium and has been linked with bids for left-back Nicky Shorey,
midfielder James Harper and striker Kevin Doyle. However, Coppell has stated
that, in spite of the club's relegation from the top flight, he is under no
financial requirement to sell his best players. "We will only accept
realisitc market values for our players. There is no financial pressure on
us," he told the Reading Evening Post. Coppell also confirmed that he will
not sell players just because they are disheartened with life in the
Championship. He added: "The one thing you can't do is sell somebody who is
unhappy, then it's an invitation for disaster. "There is a responsibility
when you sign a contract, and we can't respond to that bullying. "When you
are relegated you are vulnerable. I have players who feel they should be in
the Premiership and Premiership managers who would love to have them in
their staff. "But there is a process to go through. There is speculation
first and then maybe reality, then possibly movement."
