Pantsil ends on positive note - WHUFC
John Pantsil played his part as Ghana finished their summer schedule with a
key World Cup success
22.06.2008

John Pantsil signed off for the season on a high note as Ghana won 2-0
against Gabon on Sunday night to stay firmly on track in 2010 World Cup
qualifying.

Goals from Prince Tagoe and Sulley Muntari were enough for the Black Stars
to finish the 2007/08 campaign positively and moved them moved back to the
top of African zone Group 5 with two matches to play. The West Ham United
full-back played his fourth consecutive full 90 minutes this month in the
Accra contest and will be confident he and his team-mates will go on to
reach the second qualifying stage from the four-nation section.

Ghana and Libya both have nine points, Gabon have three and Lesotho none -
although the bottom two countries have three games left apiece. Pantsil will
now get a well-deserved international break until his country take on Libya
on 5 September in a potentially decisive fixture in Tripoli. Ghana then
conclude the first qualifying stage at home to Lesotho on 12 October.
Pantsil was a part of the squad that reached the second round of the 2006
World Cup and they are ultimately expected to be among the five African
nations that will join hosts South Africa at the 2010 finals.

Parris pleased with 'special day' - WHUFC
Former midfielder George Parris has yet again staged his summer competitions
at West Ham United
20.06.2008

George Parris has helped make youngsters' dreams come true after another
successful staging of his annual mini-soccer tournaments at the Boleyn
Ground.

The former West Ham United favourite, who served the club to distinction
between 1982 and 1993 and is still a familiar face around the stadium, saw
66 clubs from 16 counties take part with teams coming from as far afield as
Devon and Nottinghamshire. "The tournaments, as always, were keenly
contested, the action was non-stop and there was some great talent on show,"
Parris said.

The homegrown midfielder was also pleased that a very worthy charity could
also benefit from the proceedings. He added: "The events give kids the
unique chance to play at Upton Park and it is obvious how much they enjoy
the experience and of course it is a special day for their parents as well.
The weather was great, the raffles helped raise £3,000 for the Great Ormond
Street Hospital so the event couldn't really have gone any better."

Over the two-day event, there were separate competitions for Under-7s
(friendlies), U8s, U9s, U10s, U11s and U12s. The victorious teams were:

Great Yarmouth, Norfolk (U8s - Trophy)
Hove Rivervale, East Sussex (U8s - Plate)

Hove Rivervale A, East Sussex (U9s - Trophy)
Halliford Colts, Surrey (U9s - Plate)

Glebe FC, Kent (U10s - Trophy)
County Park, Essex (U10s - Plate)

Stanway Villa - Team 1, Essex (U11s - Trophy)
Stanway Villa - Team 2, Essex (U11s - Plate)

Didcot Boys, Oxfordshire (U12s - Trophy)
Leaside Colts Reds, Essex (U12s - Plate)

There have been various pitch events at the Boleyn Ground this summer. If

Hammers linked with Coloccini move - TeamTalk

West Ham are reportedly lining up a move for Deportivo La Coruna defender
Fabricio Coloccini as a potential replacement for Anton Ferdinand. The
Hammers defender has been strongly linked with a £6million move to Tottenham
although Spurs have denied any interest in the 22-year-old. However, Upton
Park Park chief Alan Curbishley is not taking any chances and is actively
looking for defensive reinforcements. Highly-rated Argentine Coloccini is
rated in the £10million bracket but it could be difficult to tempt the
26-year-old away from The Riazor.

McFadden wants Blues exit - Agent - TeamTalk

Scotland striker James McFadden is keen to leave Birmingham following their
relegation to the Championship, according to his agent. McFadden joined
Birmingham from Everton in January for £5million but could not keep Alex
McLeish's side in the Premier League. With Celtic interested, McFadden
could move back to Scotland, while Middlesbrough, West Ham and Aston Villa
are also thought to be interested. Agent Willie McKay said: "James has told
me that he wants to leave. "He is happy when Alex McLeish gave him an
opportunity to play first-team football every week but it's a short career
and he wants to play at the highest level." However, Blues manager Alex
McLeish is keen to keep hold of the former Motherwell star and said: "We
want to keep hold of our best players and James is absolutely vital to our
plans." McFadden, 25, signed a three-and-a-half-year contract when he
arrived at Birmingham and has scored four goals in 12 games.

Let's hope West Ham have learnt a lesson from last summer! -

Football FanCast guest columnist Colin Woods is hopeful that West Ham learn
from their mistakes of last summer and bring in the right calibre of player.

I remember my late father once saying to me, "Son if you are going to
support the hammers, embrace yourself as it is never easy." It was not quite
what I wanted to hear as I set off with him for my first ever game, but it's
fair to say the old man had a point.

We have had our disappointment's that is without question and moments of
adulation have been few and far between, but it has never stopped us
believing that one day we will become a force, live up to our potential and
finally challenge at the top end of the table on a regular basis.

I'm sure that I am one of many hammers fans that thought our time had come,
when the Icelandic consortium moved in and all our previous limitations
seemed a thing of the past. There was a new vibrancy around the place,
belief that we could now compete financially and the common practice of
selling of our best players confined to the past. Curbishley now had a
seemingly open chequebook and we all waited and wondered who would arrive
last summer.

All in all I don't think there were many West Ham fans that were over the
moon about the arrivals last summer. Sure the likes of Scott Parker and
Julien Faubert were considered excellent acquisitions; however there were
certain question marks around the signings of Dyer, Ljungberg and Bellamy.
All very good players when fit, but that is just it. It was a massive gamble
by Curbs that backfired and that is why I refute any claims by the manager
that last year we were unlucky with injuries, what did he really expect?

It is vital that we don't make the same mistakes this summer if Curbs has
any hopes of being in the job come next year. He has an experience guy in
Nani alongside him who will hopefully assist in bringing in the right
calibre of player. There was a time at West Ham where you had to accept the
clubs limitations, due to financial constraints however no such problems now
exist so in my eyes, there is no longer an excuse - it is time we stepped
up.

HAMMERS TALK: West Ham keeper could be on the move - Guardian Series

CHAMPIONSHIP outfit Southampton look set to offer West Ham miss-fit Richard
Wright an escape route from Upton Park. The former Arsenal and Everton
stopper has failed to make a single league appearance for the Hammers since
arriving on a free from the Toffees in July 2007. And having made just three
League Cup starts, the two-cap England gloveman was loaned out to the Saints
at the end of last season, where he helped them avoid relegation to League
One. And according to The News of the World, Wright is now mulling over an
offer to move to St Mary's.

heads the queue to sign the 26-year-old having brought the France

HAMMERS TALK: West ham linked with French international midfielder -

MEDIA reports claim that West Ham are set to battle it out for Birmingham's
French international midfielder Olivier Kapo. The relegated Blues could be
ready to cash-in on the 26-year-old, with Wigan boss Steve Bruce, who signed
the player for the Midlands club from Juventus last summer believed to be
winning the race. But the Hammers and Blackburn are also reported to be
interested, and are set to battle the latics and French outfit Marseille for
the former Auxerre and Monaco star. Kapo, who scored five goals in 26
appearances at St Andrews, despite Birmingham's unsuccessful bid to avoid
the drop to the Championship, could be allowed to leave for around
£3million, which would fit Alan Curbishley's strict transfer budget this
summer.

Green gets going in Africa - WHUFC
A charity visit to Africa is set to provide Robert Green with a physical and
emotional challenge this month
19.06.2008

Robert Green is taking the first steps towards his charity climb of Mount
Kilimanjaro as he looks to raise money and awareness for the African Medical
and Research Foundation.

Before attempting to scale the continent's highest peak, the West Ham United
goalkeeper is in Africa for a visit to Kenya and Tanzania, where he will
visit three areas in particular need of basic medical care and increased
knowledge of health issues. As well as seeing Amref's programmes and
workshops at first hand, he will look to bring people together by staging
football tournaments.

"Africa's number one love is football and it seems a waste not to use it to
try and spread the message," he said. "If we can affect a few lives then
brilliant. It is pretty basic medical care that people are getting ... It is
a massive charity and they are doing fantastic work. I am going to see first
hand the work they do. The climax is the attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is going to be a tough challenge and one that I am looking forward to."

Before leaving England, Green staged a number of charity events including a
goalkeeper's golf day and a special charity tournament at the Boleyn Ground
which have already helped raise Amref's profile and secure much-needed
funds. The Kilimanjaro climb will be a spectacular end to a memorable few
months for the 28-year-old. "The last day is a 12-hour hike to go one mile
which sounds strange but I think the main challenge is the altitude
sickness. They say you feel pretty rough after each step ... One mile for
me usually is about a whole season!"

Green has had support from his West Ham United team-mates, many of whom also
do their own private charity work as well as support the club's two chosen
good causes in the Richard House Children's Hospice and the Bobby Moore Fund
for Cancer Research. Like others he was particularly keen to give something
back. "I wanted to use [the close season] to help people and affect some
good. It is something that for myself living in a professional footballer's
bubble you don't normally get to experience. I see a lot of hotels, coaches
and airports and not a lot beyond that and this is something that can help
me appreciate what I have got and what I can do to help people.

"I think what we do is a wonderful gift," he added. "You go out and play
football. There is massive amounts of pressure but the guys at Amref and
other charities are trying to save lives and that is real pressure." AMREF
has more than 600 people working throughout the Africa, attempting to
improve the lives of people in some of the harshest and poorest climates in
the world. If you would like to sponsor Robert on his climb, you can find

Irons target hot start - Echo News
By Rob Pritchard

WEST Ham captain Lucas Neill believes the Premier League fixture computer
has done the Irons an early-season favour. The Hammers do not face any of
the Premier League's big-four in their opening eight fixtures - during which
time they will host strugglers Wigan Athletic, Fulham and Bolton Wanderers
and travel to newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion and Hull City. And the
Australian insists there is no reason why Alan Curbishley's men cannot be
among the front-runners when they host Arsenal on their ninth Premier League
outing on Saturday, October 25. "When the fixtures come out it gives you
something to focus on straight away and you switch your mentality from being
on a break and recovering from last season to preparing and getting fit and
ready for the new season," the 30-year-old skipper told whufc.com "It is
good to be starting at home (against Wigan on August 16) as it should mean
we get off to a positive start and state our intentions for the season and
finishing at home (against Middlesbrough on May 24, 2009) as well is always
good.
"There are obviously two newly-promoted teams who will also be finding their
feet and Fulham, Bolton and Wigan all finished at the wrong end of the table
last season so, on paper, it does look like we could start very well, but
there are no easy games in the Premier League as we all know."
West Ham's cause will also be boosted by the return of forwards Craig
Bellamy, Kieron Dyer and Julien Faubert from long-term injuries, while
winger Matty Etherington and defender Danny Gabbidon should also be
available to face the Latics. And Neill is looking forward to a 2008/09
season in stark contrast to the 50-plus injuries the club suffered last
term. "Another thing the fixtures coming out does is give everyone the
chance to draw a line under last season and the injury problems we had," he
added. "The injured players and physios have been working very hard over the
summer to get everyone back for pre-season and it looks like the manager
will have a near-on fully-fit squad to choose from for the Wigan game. "As
captain, that is a very exciting prospect as I can really see this squad
reaching it's full potential this season."
Meanwhile, a West Ham source has dismissed stories linking the club to a bid
for Reading midfielder James Harper as "pure speculation". The
Chelmsford-born 27-year-old had been linked with a £3million move to Upton
Park.

Aston Villa set to bid for Anton Ferdinand - Birmingham Mail
Jun 19 2008 By Bill Howell

MARTIN O'Neill is keen on West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand and could follow
up his interest with a firm bid for the 23-year-old, who has been made
available by Alan Curbishley at the right price. O'Neill is looking for
quality reinforcements ahead of the InterToto campaign in a month's time.
Ferdinand has been heavily linked with a £6million move to Tottenham in
recent weeks but O'Neill could decide to steal in and firm up his liking for
a player who has, perhaps, lost his way a little after five years of
guaranteed first-team football. O'Neill has Martin Laursen and Zat Knight as
his only fit central defenders with Curtis Davies out until October and
youngster Stephen O'Halloran recovering from a knee injury. Ferdinand, aged
22 – younger brother of Manchester United's Rio – could join former Hammers
team-mates Nigel Reo-Coker and Marlon Harewood at Villa Park should O'Neill
push through a deal. West Ham have previously indicated they are willing to
listen to offers for Ferdinand with manager Curbishley seemingly under
pressure to cut the Upton Park wage bill this summer.

WEST Ham goalkeeper Robert Green reported to be interesting both Tottenham
and Aston Villa, writes Sam Lom-Bor. The Times have reported that the
England shot-stopper's current contract situation has caught the attention
of Juande Ramos and Martin O'Neill. Both managers have been looking to boost
their squad in the goalkeeper area, and may take the delay of Green's
contract situation as a chance to obtain the 28-year-old. Green at present
is being paid a reported £28,000 a week and with West Ham unwilling to
increase his salary by more than £5,000, Tottenham and Villa may come
calling with offers for the one-time England international's services.

NEWCASTLE and West Ham are set to do battle as they chase Deportivo La

are keen to land him. Argentine star Coloccini, 26, would cost around
£12million and admits he is waiting to see where he will be playing next

Everton legend Southall: West Ham's Wright wasn't up to it
tribalfooball.com - June 19, 2008

Everton legend Neville Southall says former Blues goalkeeper Richard Wright
wasn't good enough for a club of their size. Southall told evertonfc.com: "I
think you had Richard Wright in Paul Gerrard. I didn't quite see the sense
in bringing Richard in because I thought Paul was as good, if not better
than Richard. "Paul had that experience of playing in the Premier League but
I think Richard probably got found out at that level. Again he'd been at
Ipswich where you could have a couple of worldies and then nothing for six
months. "Richard is a really talented goalkeeper but he couldn't really make
that step up to world class. It's a shame." Wright is currently No2 at West

Hammers line up £9.5million Johnson bid - FansFC
07:30 June, 20, 2008

West Ham United Football Club are set to make a 'take it or leave it' bid
for Andy Johnson. The Londoners have been linked with the England
international for much of this year, despite the fact the striker has only
recently penned a new deal to remain on Merseyside with Everton. However,
this will not stop Alan Curbishley for making an official £9.5million bid
for the Toffees star, as he plans to link him up with Dean Ashton at Upton
Park next season. If, as is expected, David Moyes rejects this offer, then
the Hammers will finally end their interest in Johnson and turn their
attentions elsewhere during the summer window.

Neill looking to August opener - WHUFC
The club captain has high hopes for the new season and cannot wait for it
all to get going again
18.06.2008

Lucas Neill is focused firmly on the opening game of the 2008/09 season with
the publication this week of the full fixture programme.

The West Ham United captain is not needed for international duty this
weekend with Australia through to the second stage of Asian qualifying for
the 2010 World Cup before the now academic concluding first-stage match
against China in Sydney. Instead, the right-back is looking next to club
commitments and a strong start come the arrival of Wigan Athletic on 16
August.

He said: "When the fixtures come out it gives you something to focus on
straight away and you switch your mentality from being on a break and
recovering from last season to preparing and getting fit and ready for the
new season. It is good to be starting at home as it should mean we get off
to a positive start and state our intentions for the season and finishing at
home [against Middlesbrough on 24 May] as well is always good."

Neill was particularly buoyed by the run of fixtures in the first couple of
months of a campaign that should see plenty of competition for places. "It
is early to say but looking at the first eight games we are confident with
the squad we have that we can get off to a good start. Man City and
Blackburn will both have new managers by then so will still be adjusting to
a new style of play."

Stressing the difficulties of all opponents in the top flight amid the
reasons for optimism, he added: "There are obviously two newly promoted
teams who will also be finding their feet and Fulham, Bolton and Wigan all
finished at the wrong end of the table last season so yes on paper it does
look like we could start very well but there are no easy games in the
Premier League as we all know.

"Another thing the fixtures coming out does is give everyone the chance to
draw a line under last season and the injury problems we had. The injured
players and physios have been working very hard over the summer to get
everyone back for pre-season and it looks like the manager will have a near
on fully-fit squad to choose from for the Wigan game which as captain is a
very exciting prospect as I can really see this squad reaching it's full

McAvennie back at the Boleyn - WHUFC
One of the stars of the 1985/86 season, Frank McAvennie, has staged a
successful tournament
18.06.2008

Frank McAvennie has been back at the Boleyn Ground for his annual summer
tournament which saw trophies handed out in honour of two club legends.

The former striker, who had two spells with West Ham United between 1985 and
1992, memorably scored 26 goals in 41 appearances in the famed 1985/86
season. His two-day tournament saw a team called Twenty-Niners win the
inaugural Billy Bonds Trophy before a side dubbed The Soapies was victorious
the next day and lifted the John Lyall Trophy. The latter success was made
all the more special as Lyall's son Murray was on hand to make the
presentation.

McAvennie, who only left West Ham United the first time for his beloved
Celtic and is as passionate about the east London club as ever, said "These
events are one of the highlights of the year for me as they give ordinary
fans the unique opportunity to play on the pitch. I know how much this means
to them and by the smiles on their faces it is obvious they thoroughly enjoy
themselves. This year's events were even more special as for the first time
two of the club's greatest ever figures were honoured with trophies in their
names.

"I was delighted that Murray Lyall attended the Friday event and I know he
is very proud his dad is remembered with such affection by the fans. The
evening functions in the Castle Suite were great fun too and the raffles
raised a few hundred quid for charity so all in all a very enjoyable couple
of days." There have been various pitch events at the Boleyn Ground this
summer. If you are interested in playing on the hallowed turf yourself next

Euro dream over for Ljungberg - WHUFC
Freddie Ljungberg's Sweden are out of the European Championship after losing

Freddie Ljungberg's involvement in Euro 2008 is over after Sweden were
eliminated from the competition with a 2-0 defeat by Russia.

Goals in each half from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Andrei Arshavin were enough
to take Guus Hiddink's side through at the expense of the Scandinavian
nation, who had only needed a draw in Innsbruck to progress. Russia were in
scintillating form although Sweden had some moments, not least when
Ljungberg burst through just before half-time after a slick passing move
only to be denied by a fine save. Russia will now play the Netherlands in
the last eight on Saturday night while Sweden's campaign is over. Sweden had
previously won 2-0 against Greece and lost 2-1 to Group D winners Spain

Tomka and Sears called up - WHUFC
James Tomkins and Freddie Sears are in the provisional England squad for
July's UEFA U19 finals
18.06.2008

James Tomkins and Freddie Sears have been named in the provisional 23-man
England squad for the European Under-19 Championship in the Czech Republic.

The selection will eventually be cut to 18 players before the 14-26 July
tournament but both Tomkins and Sears can be optimistic about their
inclusion after playing key roles as the Young Lions secured their place in
the eight-team finals. In a qualifying mini-tournament held in Belarus last
month, Tomkins helped England keep three clean sheets and Sears scored two
goals to finish as top scorer. The pair will join up with the rest of Brian
Eastick's squad at a special training camp at the National Football Centre
in Burton.

Homegrown central defender Tomkins has high hopes that England can go all
the way, even though England have been drawn in a tough group with the
hosts, who they face in the opening match in Jablonec. They then play Italy
three days later in the same venue before taking on Greece in Liberec on 20
July. The other four-team section includes Spain, Germany, Hungary and
Bulgaria.

The 19-year-old is full of confidence after both he and Sears made their
first-team breakthroughs in the 2007/08 campaign and also has plenty of
faith in his international colleagues. "We are going to go out there to win
it, I don't see why we can't. Especially after the way we played in Belarus.
We are going to go to the Czech Republic with full confidence that we can
win this tournament. I am really looking forward to it."

Will Anton be a Spur? - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

WITH THE news that West Ham are looking to cut their wage bill still ringing
in the ears of supporters, the prospect of the club losing players has
already become a reality, writes DAVE EVANS. Nobby Solano was quickly
released from his contract last week and as well as rumours concerning the
future of strikers Bobby Zamora and Carlton Cole, it seems Anton Ferdinand
may be the next player out of the Upton Park exit door. The 23-year-old
central defender came through the Academy ranks to secure a regular place in
the West Ham first team, but the former England under-21 international may
be looking for a fresh challenge. Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a
move to take Ferdinand to White Hart Lane in a £6million deal, and though
Spurs have since denied it, the prospect of the player moving across London
will give West Ham fans mixed emotions. On the one hand they will not be
keen to see another of their men end up at White Hart Lane, but on the
other, many see the prospect of getting a sizeable fee for the defender too
tempting to turn down. Ferdinand's career at Upton Park has been a mixed
one. When he first broke into the team back in 2002, he was used sparingly,
and often found himself at right back rather than his more customary role at
centre half. It was only when he was paired with Elliott Ward in the
promotion run-in of 2004-05 season that he was finally able to establish
himself in the team. Ward departed, but Danny Gabbidon and James Collins and
then Matty Upson have come into the squad and with all three suffering from
injuries in the past two seasons, Ferdinand has been a regular, making 163
appearances in a West Ham shirt. But despite his obvious talents, many fans
remain unconvinced by some of his performances for the club.
There still seems to be a tendency for Ferdinand to give away free kicks on
the edge of the West Ham penalty area, while he seems to need the
confidence-boosting presence of an Upson or a Gabbidon alongside him to find
his best form. His displays alongside the likes of Jonathan Spector at
centre half last season, left a lot to be decided. Ferdinand's possible
departure will depend greatly on the fitness of West Ham's other central
defenders, and it has to be said that it doesn't look too promising. England
man Upson will be fit for the opening game of the season, but there are
still doubts over Gabbidon, Collins and Calum Davenport, while Spector is
likely to be out until Christmas. In conclusion, a new challenge for
Ferdinand may certainly be the best move for the player, but if it will
leave West Ham short, then it is something that manager Alan Curbishley must
resist until everyone is fit.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
In with a shout - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

WEST HAM may start the new season against Wigan Athletic on August 16 with
almost a fully-fit squad as player after player confirmed their fitness,
writes DAVE EVANS. Last season's tale of injury woe was unprecedented in the
history of the Premier League with as many as 14 players out at one time,
but with the Chadwell Heath training ground a hive of activity since the end
of the season, things are looking up at last. Lee Bowyer, who missed the
final 13 games of the last campaign, is just one of the many who have been
battling to be fit for pre-season when it begins in early July. "I have been
in and working hard all summer to get fit and I'm feeling good," said the
31-year-old midfielder, who had his best season at West Ham last term,
scoring four goals along the way. "I have targeted the Wigan game to make a
full return and it would be even better if I could get another goal against
them," said Bowyer, who scored his first goal in claret and blue against the
Latics last August. "After the way I started last season, getting on the
scoresheet a few times, it was a frustrating second half to the campaign."
So it was for so many other West Ham players, but for most there seems to be
light at the end of the tunnel. Craig Bellamy has made two substitute
appearances for Wales, while Matty Etherington, Matty Upson and Julien
Faubert will all begin pre-season training with a clean bill of health.
Broken leg victim Kieron Dyer is also coming on leaps and bounds after
undergoing a second operation, and though he may not be quite ready for
August 16, he is expected to play some part in pre-season. Calum Davenport
has also recovered from his horrific neck injury, while the other dubious
fitness calls are concerning Welsh centre back duo Danny Gabbidon and James
Collins. Gabbidon has been undergoing some alternative treatment in Italy,
while Collins has been working hard on the cruciate ligament injury, which
has ruled him out since December. All in all, the prospects look rosy for
manager Alan Curbishley and his team when they begin their pre-season
campaign, and with a soft start to their Premier League fixtures, who knows
what they can achieve?

Court case drags on - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

THE arbitration hearing investigating Sheffield United's claim for
compensation following the 'Carlos Tevez affair' is set to last at least
until the end of this week. Presiding judge Lord Griffiths and his team of
legal experts are currently examining new evidence submitted by the Blades,
something they have not been allowed to do during previous appeals. The
Sheffield case may have been somewhat undermined by the fact that Kia
Joorabchian, the Iranian businessman emb-roiled in the financial wrangle
over both Tevez and his fellow Argentinian Javier Mascherano, has joined
West Ham in an advisory scouting capacity. The Blades, led by outspoken
vice-chairman Kevin McCabe, are confident of getting a result this time
round, in what promises to be their last chance to win compensation of
between £25-£30million from West Ham after they claim to have been robbed of
their Premier League status by West Ham's alleged illegal playing of Tevez.
The West Ham delegation however, are confident that they will be exonerated,
as they have been on every occasion that Sheffield United have challenged
the original FA panel decision. The panel's verdict is expected to be
delivered by the end of the month.

Home sweet home again - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

WEST HAM will tackle the north west frontier in August after their first
three games pitted them against teams from Lancashire, writes DAVE EVANS.
For the fourth successive season the Hammers will begin their campaign at
Upton Park and though their clash with Steve Bruce's Wigan Athletic is not
exactly a mouthwatering one, it is an ideal opportunity to pick up three
points. That is followed by a trip to Eastlands to take on Mark Hughes and
his new Manchester City team, before his old team Blackburn Rovers come to
east London on August 30. Wigan visited Upton Park in August last season and
only Lee Bowyer's first goal for the club rescued a point for the Hammers.
They will look to take all three points this time round and if you look at
their opening few games it certainly seems that the fixture computer has
been kind to them. Of their first eight matches all look winnable with home
matches against Newcastle United and Bolton as well as Wigan and Blackburn,
and trips to newly-promoted West Brom and Hull City as well as Fulham and
Manchester City. Hammers fans always look to the two games against deadly
rivals Spurs, but they will have to wait a little while to see them as
Tottenham don't come to east London until December 6, with the return game
at White Hart Lane in April. There is no final away game at Old Trafford
this season. The champions entertain West Ham as early as October 28, which
is a Tuesday night match, while Alex Ferguson's boys come to Upton Park on
February 7.
West Ham take on Arsenal in the game before Manchester United on both
occasions. At Upton Park the match is scheduled for October 25, while the
Hammers make the trip to the Emirates on January 31. Boxing Day will see
West Ham travelling to the south coast to take on Harry Redknapp's
Portsmouth for the second time in three seasons. You might want to leave
early for that one. This reporter remembers a four and a half hour trip to
Fratton Park on that day two seasons ago, missing the first 20 minutes of
the game, after some horrendous traffic. There are no games on either New
Year's Eve or New Year's Day as the third round of the FA Cup is scheduled
for January 3, while newly-promoted Stoke City come to Upton Park on
December 28.
Despite West Ham starting at home, they also manage to finish their campaign
at Upton Park too. Everton provide the opposition for their final away game
of the season, while Gareth Southgate's Middles-brough come to east London
on the final day of the campaign. That game, incredibly, is not until May
24, a full three weeks after the regular Football League season is over. If
West Ham make the FA Cup Final as well, then their season will not finish
until May 30, just two days before June! The comparatively soft start to the
season could be a blessing for manager Alan Curbishley, for whom it is
likely to be a make or break campaign. Last season, West Ham's target was a
solid campaign and a top 10 finish, and despite a devastating series of
inujuries, they managed that with few problems. Now the boss must hope that
his players are fit and raring to go come August and that they stay fit,
because the target this time round must surely be a place in Europe. It
won't be easy, especially as the budget is a little tighter this season, but
West Ham already have the squad to make a splash in the division. And with a
good start that these fixtures seem to offer West Ham, who knows what they
can achieve?

We shall see.

Carlton Cole linked with Sunderland - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

CARLTON COLE, one of the success stories of last season, has been linked
with a move to Roy Keane's Sunderland. The 24-year-old striker, who grabbed
six goals during the last campaign, including a strike against the Black
Cats, turned from villain to hero for the fans during the season, as his
improvement took on dramatic proportions. He was preferred to Dean Ashton in
Alan Curbishley's controversial 4-5-1 formation, but also excelled in a more
orthodox line-up, where his ability to hold the ball up became an important
part of West Ham's play. Keane's main striker - Kenwyne Jones - was badly
injured in Trinidad & Tobago's friendly international with England in Port
of Spain recently, and the Sunderland boss sees Cole as an ideal
replacement. A bid of £2million is said to be imminent from the Wearsiders,
but if West Ham decide to sell, they will certainly need to replace him,
especially as another striker - Bobby Zamora - has been attracting the
interest of Championship big-spenders Queens Park Rangers. Rangers see the
27-year-old as the ideal man to spearhead their march towards the Premier
League.

Odds against Hammers - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

THE BOOKIES do not hold much hope of West Ham making a Premier League splash
this coming season. The Hammers are quoted at 750/1 to win the title, with
Manchester United the favourites at 11/10. In fact, West Ham are only 8/1 to
be relegated, with boss Alan Curbishley the favourite to be the first
managerial casualty. Mind you it could be worse. Hull and Stoke are both
quoted at only 9/1 to fail to win a league game all season!

Getaway Carr for Hammers? - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

WEST HAM are favourites to land former Newcastle United full back Stephen
Carr on a free transfer. The 31-year-old Republic of Ireland international
was deemed surplus to requirements by Kevin Keegan at St James' Park and
released in the summer after a season marred by injuries. Carr lost his
place at right back to the impressive Habib Beye, and made just 12
appearances for the Magpies last season despite Newcastle's defence
struggling throughout the campaign. The full back, who has 41 international
caps, was regarded as one of the top full backs in the Premier League during
his time at Spurs, but injuries over the last two seasons on Tyneside have
seen him drop down the pecking order. Carr is looking for a return to the
capital and the fact that he is available on a free transfer is likely to
interest West Ham, as they look for cover for club captain Lucas Neill.
Portsmouth and Bolton are also said to be interested in Carr's signature,
though why three Premier League clubs would be interested in signing such an
injury prone player is something of a mystery.

Harper is hoping to sign on the dotted line - Newham Recorder
18 June 2008

READING attacking midfielder James Harper is a target for West Ham United as
the player looks to return to the Premier League before the new campaign
begins in August. The Chelmsford-born 27-year-old suffered relegation with
the Royals last season and despite signing a new three year contract just
last summer, Reading will allow him to leave if the price is right. That
price is expected to be around £3million for a player who has made nearly
300 appearances for Reading since moving there from Arsenal, where he failed
to get a game. Harper has pledged his allegiance to relegated Reading, but
only in a way that suggests he is open to offers. "I won't pretend I don't
want to be in the Premier League," said Harper, who scored six goals for the
Royals last term. "But I'm more than happy to stay here for next season. "I
don't want to be in the Championship, but Reading are, so I am prepared to
come back for pre-season, graft and fight for the shirt." With Reading
looking to cut their wage bill and West Ham looking for players at the
cheaper end of the market, this could be a match made in heaven.

West Ham continue to be linked with Reading duo James Harper and Nicky

back to the Premiership later this summer as Reading prepare a clear-out of
their most saleable assets. But the Royals are growing increasingly
frustrated by the lack of activity at boardroom level, with all the talk
going on through the press and no bids having been submitted for
consideration.

Harper cools Hammers link - football.co.uk
Thursday Jun 19 2008 07:25

West ham United target James Harper says he would be content to remain with
Reading next season, despite craving a return to the Premier League.
The 27-year-old midfielder has been with the Royals since early 2001, making
over 300 appearances in all competitions for the Berkshire club. However,
Harper is reported to be attracting interest from the Hammers and Fulham,
following Reading's relegation to the Championship at the end of last
season.
Harper told the Reading Evening Post: "I have not asked to leave, but if the
club want to sell me and accept a bid then I would go and talk to them. "I
am happy to stay here, so it is in the club's hands. I would never ask to
leave or put in a transfer request. "No matter what job you do you want to
be at the top level. I want to be at the top of my profession and I want to
be the best I can and play against the best. "I won't pretend I don't want
to be playing in the Premier League, but I'm more than happy to stay here
next season. "I have been here seven years and I have always given my all
for Reading."

Hammers defender McCartney confident of getting off to a flyer - Guardian
Series

WEST HAM defender George McCartney believes his side can get off to a flyer
next season after the fixtures for the upcoming campaign were announced this
week. McCartney, who was the only Hammer to complete every game last season,
is convinced the team can win 'the majority of the first eight or nine
games' after the Upton Park side were handed a favourable selection of
opening fixtures. West Ham kick off the season on August 16 when they
welcome Wigan to the Boleyn Ground before travelling to face Mark Hughes'
Manchester City. Games against Blackburn and Premier League new-boys West
Brom follow, although they will not face one of the big four' until the end
of October, when they travel to Old Trafford. And McCartney believes all the
ingredients are there for a strong start to the season. "If we have a good
pre-season and get up to standard quickly then there's no reason why we
can't get plenty of points on the board from our first eight or nine games,"
the left-back said confidently. We're certainly capable of winning the
majority of those opening games. If we can do that then that will take the
pressure off when we face the top teams."
McCartney, 27, has established himself as an ever-present under manager Alan
Curbishley since making his move from Sunderland two years ago.
And the Northern Ireland international's efforts were recently rewarded
after he was voted runner-up to goalkeeper Robert Green as Hammer of the
Year last season. But McCartney was keen not to dwell on the past, and is
already tipping his team-mates to improve on last year's tenth place finish.
The attacking full-back is looking forward to testing himself against the
league's big boys, and as a boyhood Liverpool fan, the trip to Anfield on
November 29 is one fixture in particular that has caught his eye straight
away. "I'm looking forward to the game against Sunderland because it's
always nice to play against your former club," admitted McCartney. "But as a
Liverpool fan I'm especially looking forward to that game. "It's always good
to play against the top teams and to test yourself against the best."

Hammers court case is still on-going - Guardian Series

SHEFFIELD UNITED are attempting a last-ditch effort at claiming compensation
over the Carlos Tevez saga. Blades officials, led by vice-chairman Kevin
McCabe, have recently submitted new evidence to judge Lord Griffiths that
they claim proves that they are owed between £25-30 million compensation
from West Ham, having been relegated from the Premier League in 2007. The
main part of their case is that the Hammers allegedly played Tevez illegally
in their own quest to avoid relegation, which in the end came at the Blades
expense. The Sheffield United case may be hindered by the fact that Kia
Joorabchian, a key member in the transfers of Argentinian duo Carlos Tevez
and Javier Mascherano to Upton Park, has recently joined the West Ham
backroom staff as an advisory scouting capacity. For this reason, Hammers
officials say that they still remain confident that the appeals, like
previous, will be exonerated, claiming that the Blade's case has 'no merit'.
The panel, headed by judge Lord Griffiths, will give its final verdict
before the end of the month, which will surely spell the end of Sheffield
United's case.

Fulham enter the race for Hammers striker - Guardian Series

FULHAM have entered the race to sign West Ham's want-away striker Bobby
Zamora, writes Sam Lom-Bor. The ex-England Under-21 player made only 14
appearances for the Hammers last season after missing five months of the
campaign through injury. He is now reportedly looking for a move away from
Upton Park with assurances of first team football. It had been reported that
QPR were prepared to offer £2 million for the forward, but now Roy Hodgson
has made clear his intention to sign the player, lining up a £3.5million
bid. But with Carlton Cole being linked with a move to Sunderland, Alan
Curbishley may well be unwilling to let go of the 27 year-old.

Hammers linked with Italian midfielder again - Guardian Series

HAMMERS boss Alan Curbishley has once more been linked with Palermo
midfielder Mark Bresciano, writes Sam Lom-Bor. The Australian winger is
being tracked by a number of clubs, including Manchester City, and is also
thought to be regarded highly at Upton Park. Bresciano, 28, could become
Curbishley's first signing of the summer if the West Ham boss is prepared to
pay the £4million price tag that is being touted by the media. But Palermo,
who have already lost four key players this summer including Brazilian
striker Amauri to Juventus, will not want to lose any more members of the
squad and might up the price for Bresciano if West Ham choose to further
their interest in the player.

Shorey linked with Hammers switch again - Guardian Series

ENGLAND left-back Nicky Shorey has once again been linked with a move to
Upton Park, writes Sam Lom-Bor. The Reading player is determined to link up
with Alan Curbishley at West Ham, in order to enhance his chances of playing
for England, following Reading's relegation from the Premier League.
However, the reported £5million asking price may provide a stumbling block
for the Hammers, who recently released Peruvian Nolberto Solano on a free
transfer. But Alan Curbishley is determined to bolster his squad following a
fairly average campaign, and is willing to dip into his transfer kitty with
the signing of Shorey. The possible capture of the former Leyton Orient
player may unsettle George McCartney, who played in every game for the
Hammers last season.

Hammers striker happy to help - Guardian Series

WEST HAM striker Craig Bellamy will fund a £650,000 football academy to be
set up in Sierra Leone. Bellamy has taken on the project, which will see 14
leagues and 68 youth teams organised in conjunction with education and
community initiatives. The Hammers forward follows in the footsteps of
Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, who has an academy set up in Uganda.
And the 28-year-old is determined to take a hands-on approach to ensure this
new project is a success. "This trip is to show my face and to show how
serious I am," he told reporters in the country's capital Freetown on
Sunday.
"It will be my second home. I have no doubt about it. "I want this done
properly, to an international level. I don't want any young children, if
they have talent, to be overlooked. "It will make the national team
stronger. There's talent everywhere."
The academy will be erected over 25 acres of land in the village of Tombo,
which is located along the coast of the West African country. Bellamy
continued: "I'm not looking to gain anything from this opportunity - except
every couple of years to change 250 children's lives."

Bowyer relishing new season - WHUFC
Lee Bowyer is looking forward to being in contention when Wigan Athletic
arrive for 2008/09 opening day
17.06.2008

Lee Bowyer cannot wait for the new season to begin after the announcement of
the fixtures for the 2008/09 campaign.

The West Ham United midfielder started last season in electric fashion,
scoring four goals in his first ten matches, and is looking to do the same
again starting with the arrival of Wigan Athletic on 16 August. Bowyer has
worked particularly hard in recent weeks to prove his fitness after
overcoming a groin injury. He said: "It's always exciting when the fixtures
come out because you get to see who you are playing when and when you have
got the big teams and also the newly promoted teams.

"I myself have never played against Hull so that is one I am looking forward
to and knowing what the first fixture is gives you something to work towards
and focus on being part of," he added. "If you look at the first eight games
it is a really good chance for a positive start." Bowyer's last appearance
came back on 9 February but he is confident he will enjoy better fortunes in
the coming campaign. It was against Wigan early last season that he scored
his first goal in claret and blue and he would relish a repeat next time
around.

"I have been in and working hard all summer to get fit and I am feeling good
so I have targeted that Wigan game to make a full return and it would be
even better if I could get another against them. After the way I started
last season and getting on the scoresheet a few times it was a very
frustrating second half to the campaign so I am looking forward to putting
that behind me." Click here for all the 2008/09 fixtures.

American talent given a chance - WHUFC
Tony Carr will be heading to the United States and Canada as part of his
search for promising players
17.06.2008

Academy director Tony Carr will be casting his eye over young American
talent around West Ham United's high-profile trip to the United States and
Canada in July.

Over the past 12 months, the West Ham United Football Academy USA has put
forward 16 talented teenagers to train and be evaluated by the club's youth
coaches as they look for the next Freddie Sears or Mark Noble. Carr and
colleague Paul Heffer are now planning to identify a further ten players to
visit the Academy at Little Heath to complement the commitment to local
youngsters. They are staging a series of training camps featuring coaching
sessions and full-scale trial matches in Georgia, Illinois and Indiana as
well as around the first-team's pre-season matches in North America.

Carr has spoken about the potential he sees in young talent on the other
side of the Atlantic. "The enthusiasm with American youngsters to get better
and to play the game is unquenchable at the moment. There is lots of raw
talent in the US and some very good players. There is no question about
that. We had a boy come to our Academy who was on a European break and he
made a visit through our links in the US. We let him join in with our
Under-12 squad and this player was as good as anyone we had recruited
ourselves locally. We know the talent is there in the US.

"We are looking for a passion and enthusiasm of the game," Carr added when
asked what the Academy coaches are hoping to spot during their summer
programme. "You have got to love the game. You have got to want the football
at your feet every minute of the day to learn and hone those techniques. As
they progress and get older, the game gets faster and more physically
demanding so we are trying to produce and develop a player that can cope
with those demands later on. In the early years, it is just about developing
skill, technique and individuality. Those are things we can encourage and
the rest can come later."

Estelle at MLS All-Star game - WHUFC
English singer Estelle will be taking to the stage at half-time of the
prestigious pre-season game next month
17.06.2008

West Ham United will not be the only Londoners taking part in the Major
League Soccer All-Star Game on 24 July as singer Estelle will perform in the
half-time show.

The R&B star will be singing her international hit American Boy, taken from
her second album Shine, during the high-profile game being played at the BMO
Field in Toronto, Canada. Geoff Hayes, vice president of special events for
Major League Soccer, said: "Estelle is an excellent representation of the
kind of artist that is ideal for a Major League Soccer special event. Her
chart-topping tracks in Europe, combined with her rising star status in
North America, amount to an exciting entertainment buzz and incremental
attention."

This is the fifth time the MLS All-Stars, potentially featuring the LA
Galaxy and England midfielder David Beckham, have taken on teams from
overseas. In the four previous games, Celtic FC, Chelsea FC, Fulham and
Mexican outfit CD Guadalajara have all come up short against the finest
players from the top league in the United States and Canada. For more

Alan Curbishley could be just one man short of a fully fit squad come the
start of the 2008/09 season, according to whufc.com.

After an horrific season last year in terms of injuries Curbishley is set to
welcome back all of his sidelined players bar defender Jonathan Spector, who
could be out until the new year after sustaining a torn labrum.

Already back to full fitness and chomping at the bit are Craig Bellamy,
Matthew Etherington, Kieron Dyer, Julien Faubert and, most surprising of
all, Calum Davenport who broke his neck whilst on loan at Watford as
recently as January.

Meanwhile Matthew Upson and Lee Bowyer have also overcome the injuries which
saw them miss the end of last season - whilst Welsh duo Danny Gabbidon and
James Collins are also likely to be involved at some stage in pre-season.

Gabbidon - out since the end of last year with a groin-related problem - has
spent time in Italy recently receiving 'alternative therpy' in order to aid
his recovery. Collins - who tore a cruciate whilst playing for the reserves
at Portsmouth - has also received good news suggesting he could also feature
before August.

Finally, KUMB readers will be pleased to know that Nigel Quashie has finally
been located and is also set to return to action (after a year out with a
'foot injury') ahead of the season opener against Wigan on 16th August.

Cass date released - KUMB

'Cass' - the film based on the life of author and West Ham United supporter
Cass Pennant - is being released on 1st August. The film, directed by Jon S
Baird, details Cass's life story and his struggle against institutionalised
racism. The Hammers, which are a big part of the subject's life naturally
feature extensively. But according to Pennant in an interview with The
Times, the film is much more than just another hoolie-flick. "The heart of
the film is about a man's quest for his identity," he said. "If the heart of
the film was the ICF days then it would be over after 25 per cent of the
film, because the rest of it isn't about that at all." Pennant - who
describes himself as a 'reformed hooligan' - is played in the film by
Shakespearian actor Nonso Anozie, who was the youngest actor ever to play
King Lear and also recipient of the Ian Charleson Award for his role as
Othello. His on-screen nemesis is played by Paul Kaye, the actor known for
playing Dennis Pennis and more recently Kenny Marsh in the TV series Two
Thousand Acres of Sky. Also starring are the likes of Tamer Hassan (Football
Factory and Layer Cake) plus TV actress Nathalie Press.

Digging Cole - KUMB

Rumours linking United's Carlton Cole with a move to Sunderland continue to
abound. Last month The Daily Mirror reported that Roy Keane was set to
launch a bid for Cole having lost his main striker Kenwyn Jones to injury.
Now that link has resurfaced with The Shields Gazette claiming that Keane is
ready to make an offer for the former Chelsea man, who played a pivotal role
in West Ham's season last year. Surrey-born Cole joined the Hammers from
Chelsea two years ago this month for a fee in the region of £2 million.
Despite scoring within 30 seconds of his debut he went on to score just
twice more last season. This season he has scored six goals from 37
appearances. Current manager Alan Curbishley will be looking to recoup at
least the same amount his predecessor Alan Pardew paid Chelsea in order to
part company with the 6'3" forward.

Hammers trying to get to the bottom of Bellamy incident - Guardian Series

WEST HAM are reported to have launched a probe in their attempts to get to
the bottom of an alleged bust up involving striker Craig Bellamy in Africa.
Hammers officials are thought to be trying to contact the former Newcastle
frontman about a fight during his charity mission to Sierra Leone. It is
claimed that the £7.25million record signing was thrown out of a casino in
Freetown after grabbing a charity worker in a headlock. The ex-Norwich man,
who's past has been blighted by a string of controversial incidents, was in

Hammers defender heads to Italy to try and solve injury problems - Guardian
Series

WEST Ham defender Danny Gabbidon is reported to have jetted off to Italy
this summer to try and cure his long-term injury problems. The former
Cardiff defender endured a frustrating campaign at Upton Park last season as
he was restricted to just 14 appearances for the Hammers. Persistent stomach
and pelvic problems, troubled the Welsh international for much of the
campaign, as he spent most of it on the sidelines with a large number of the
Irons squad.
And having also made just 24 appearances in the claret and blue the previous
season after an impressive first campaign at Upton Park following his
arrival from Cardiff in the summer of 2005, it seems that Gabbidon finally
wants to get to the root of his problems. And with the 28-year-old recently
missing out on international duty, Red Dragon's boss John Toshack revealed
that the player has headed abroad to see a top specialist in his attempts to
be ready for pre-season. He said: "We know that Danny is not really
progressing anywhere near as much as we would like. He has gone to Italy for
treatment."

Hammers on the look-out for US talent - Guardian Series

WEST HAM'S academy director Tony Carr is on the lookout for young talent
across the pond during the club's high-profile trip to the United States and

Third-party agreement with elite benefits - The Times
Martin Samuel, Sports Writer of the Year

While independent arbiters under the umbrella of the FA were preparing to
assess the precise amount of financial damage one club (West Ham United) may
have caused another (Sheffield United) by entering into illegal, third-party
agreements, over at Stapleford Park, a stately home near Melton Mowbray in
Leicestershire, two very different pleas on the same subject were being
heard by the chairmen of Premier League clubs at their annual meeting.

Richard Scudamore, the Premier League chief executive, was making a strong
case for the abolition of loan transfers between member clubs. He considered
them a serious flaw in the structure of the modern game and believed that
they could provoke conflicts of interest. Given the wealth of the league, he
said, they were unnecessary. Clubs in the first tier of English football
were sufficiently well rewarded not to need to borrow players from rivals.
In turn, he argued, it was wrong that a player should appear on one payroll
but be expected to try his heart out for a rival.

Had Scudamore taken his argument to the logical conclusion, he would have
made the point that loans are a form of third-party interference as well
because a loaned player cannot appear against the club who own his permanent
contract, so the wealthiest teams in the league are guaranteed to play
certain matches against weakened opponents. For example, if Fraizer
Campbell, the Manchester United forward who was the best player in Hull
City's promotion campaign last season, signs up for another year at the KC
Stadium, he will not turn out against United in two matches, but he will
play against Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, and Hull will be stronger
opposition for it.

Technically, there is nothing to stop an elite club placing the talented
young players from outside their first-team squad throughout the league,
like booby traps. The potential problems are clear and Scudamore has argued
against the loan system for several years (he made a similar speech at the
2007 annual meeting, too). Put to the vote again this year, however, he was
defeated by 18 to one, with Chelsea not present (Peter Kenyon, the chief
executive, had left at the end of the first day). Aston Villa were the only
club who saw sense and put what was best for football above self-interest,
although even their attitude may have changed had the naysayers' vote been
taken first and Villa's representative had realised that he was going to be
in a minority of one.

The loan system is popular because there is a mistaken belief that it
benefits the smaller clubs and gives them access to players they could
otherwise not afford. This is highly debatable. If Campbell could not be
loaned to Hull next season, he may tire of life in the reserves at United
and seek a permanent move, which would be of longer-term benefit to the
smaller clubs. Under the present system, however, United get to release him
and keep him. One can see why the elite like the idea, but Hull miss the
point if they think they are getting a good deal.

The richest clubs play both ends against the middle. Campbell gets his
Premier League experience and then returns to Old Trafford, perhaps to use
his newfound confidence against the team who helped to train him up. Maybe,
if Birmingham City had not had such easy access to temporary solutions they
would have been in a greater hurry to nurture their own talent, rather than
paying players who were passing through and were not good enough to maintain
their Premier League status.

Anyway, Scudamore's first defeat on loans did not turn out to be the half of
it. After that the 19 clubs discussed a proposal by Portsmouth to make
another change to loan regulations, with equally alarming effects.
Portsmouth wanted to scrap a rule that had been brought in last season and
won unanimous support for their proposal. And although what was eradicated
was a stupid rule, poorly conceived and inadequate in addressing the problem
that it was designed to solve, its replacement will take football back to
the bad old days of the nod, the wink and the carve-up.

Indeed, it goes farther by placing that type of arrangement above board and
in writing. In a climate in which the ramifications of the Carlos Tévez
affair are unresolved, that Premier League chairmen should be so willing to
endorse the potential for third-party interference is remarkable; in
essence, it exposes all their outrage and concern on this issue previously
as a self-serving, hypocritical sham.

You may remember the controversy over Tim Howard, the Everton goalkeeper,
and the role he played in the title race in 2006-07. Howard had been on loan
from Manchester United since the start of the season and the loan was made a
permanent transfer on February 14, 2007, with Everton paying a £3million
fee. Loan transfers can be made constant at any time in the season and are
not subject to transfer-window restrictions, but when Everton played United
at Goodison Park in April Howard did not appear and his place was taken by
an understudy, Iain Turner, whose mistakes were largely responsible for
United's win.

David Moyes, the Everton manager, and Ian Ross, the director of
communications, explained that as part of the terms of the transfer deal,
Howard could not play against his former club that season if the match was
significant to United's title ambitions, even though his registration was by
then wholly owned by Everton. The Premier League subsequently confirmed this
as a contravention of third-party interference rules and conducted a
half-hearted investigation that lasted less than 48 hours and came to an
abrupt and convenient end on the day United won the title with the
announcement that, because nothing was written down, it was only a
gentleman's agreement between the clubs and could not be proved.

Sheffield United turned out to have a similar arrangement with Watford, the
buyers of Steve Kabba, who joined with the private understanding that he
would not play for his new club when the teams met. The Premier League was
being made to look ridiculous. West Ham had been, rightly, brought to book
over third-party agreements that were never acted upon, yet these
gentleman's agreements had been applied and the governing body was powerless
to stop them. At the annual meeting last summer the loophole was closed, but
in an unsatisfactory manner.

Instead of outlawing any hold that a club have over a player the moment he
has been sold and determining to investigate thoroughly a convenient absence
from the teamsheet for a particular fixture, the Premier League introduced a
rule by unanimous vote saying that a loaned player would no longer be able
to play against his former club that season, even if his loan deal was made
permanent. This was the opposite of what should have happened and, like all
bad laws, it was exposed as such within months, in this instance by the
transfer of Jermain Defoe from Tottenham Hotspur to Portsmouth.

Defoe joined Portsmouth on January 31, 2008, the final day of the transfer
window. There were no stipulations on Tottenham's part and they were happy
for Defoe to play against them when the teams met on March 22. Yet when the
date came round it transpired that Defoe was subject to a Premier League ban
because his transfer had initially been a loan, made formal with an agreed
fee of £7.5million four days later. The reason was that Portsmouth intended
to finance the deal by selling Benjani Mwaruwari to Manchester City at the
same time, but there were complications in that transfer and, unsure of
getting the money in time, the South Coast club had made Defoe a loan
acquisition before completing the deal when Benjani's move was finalised.

Despite an honest administrative procedure, resulting in a transfer that was
above board, with all sides looking to do the right thing, Portsmouth had
fallen foul of the new law.

It was clear that the rules, although black and white, were flawed. It would
have been easy to have removed the defects and kept the clarity. All
transfers to be made final, any suspicious activity to be investigated.
Portsmouth did not propose that. They wanted the grey area to be
reinstalled. This is why, from next season, when a loan transfer is made
permanent the clubs will decide between themselves whether or not the player
can face his former team-mates. That clause is then inserted in the
contract.

It is still a carve-up, but now it is a legally endorsed one: a return to
back scratching, and doing a mate a favour. As it stands, a selling club can
pocket the money and keep the right to pick elements of the opposition team
in at least one match. Manchester United could have pulled Howard out of
Everton's team but would have done so with formal, official blessing.
Meanwhile, English football continues to debate the ramifications of
third-party agreements, while enshrining one aspect of them in the rulebook.

Where will it end? Maybe at next year's annual meeting it will become
permissible for the selling club to nominate who the transferred player does
turn out against as well. Maybe they could secure a commitment that he will
be well rested before a particular match against important rivals. "As well
as not playing against his old mates at Manchester United, the party of the
first part will also be left out of the game at Wigan Athletic on Saturday,
March 19, to make sure he is ready to give Arsenal a right good stuffing on
Wednesday, March 23 ..."

Although, on second thoughts, maybe those details will just be limited to
gentleman's agreements instead. After all, we wouldn't want too much of this
dark material formally entering the rulebook. People may begin to think the
game was dodgy.

Bellamy funds children's academy in Sierra Leone - Reuters
Wed Jun 18, 2008 2:22am BST
By Katrina Manson

FREETOWN (Reuters) - West Ham and Wales striker Craig Bellamy is funding a
650,000-pound football project to help children in Sierra Leone. Education
and community projects will go hand-in-hand with the 14 new leagues and 68
youth teams that Bellamy is also setting up throughout the poor West African
country, the player says. "This trip is to show my face and to show how
serious I am," he told reporters beside a beach after a kickabout with fans
in the steamy capital Freetown on Sunday. "It will be my second home. I have
no doubt about it."
The academy will be set up on 25 acres of land in the fishing village of
Tombo on the country's Atlantic coast while the new leagues will help to
spot young potential. "I want this done properly, to an international level.
I don't want any young children, if they have talent, to be overlooked,"
said Bellamy, 28.
"It will make the national team stronger. There's talent everywhere."
England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand funds a football
academy in Uganda and this month announced plans to set up another in
Nigeria.
On Saturday, Bellamy watched Sierra Leone beat South Africa 1-0 in a World
Cup and African Nations Cup qualifier. As hosts, South Africa are guaranteed
a place at the 2010 World Cup finals but their poor form has been worrying
fans. Unlike South Africa, Africa's biggest economy, Sierra Leone is deeply
poor and ranks bottom of the United Nations development index, a broad
measure of quality of life. Bellamy first visited Sierra Leone last year,
making a point of stopping at every dusty roadside football pitch to join
in. "It was overwhelming: you either don't want to come back or you fall in
love," he said. Teams in the new leagues will be rewarded not only for
winning matches but for fair play, school attendance and community projects
too. He said the academy should be running within a year. "I'm not looking
at getting the next Drogba, as long as every child leaves ready with a good
education," he said, referring to Chelsea striker Didier Drogba from nearby
Ivory Coast. "I'm not looking to gain anything from this opportunity --
except every couple of years to change 250 children's lives." "They know
everything about the Premier League," said Bellamy, who was mobbed
everywhere he went, as fans chanted his name and demanded autographs.
A car he was travelling in was so enthusiastically greeted by local
supporters beating on the roof and bonnet that it got dented. "I feel a
little bit embarrassed with the attention I get here -- but why not make
yourself useful?" he said. Sierra Leone is recovering from more than a
decade of civil war that finished in 2002 and was infamous for its
AK47-toting child soldiers and rebels hacking off people's limbs with
machetes. Youth unemployment runs high and more than 70 percent of Sierra
Leoneans live below the poverty line. "They have been through a lot of
problems," Bellamy said. "It's difficult coming here...You can't understand
how people live like this, and then how strong are these people. "Children
and their fathers and grandfathers have all been given a gun; and now my aim
is to throw them a football."

Midfielder targets Latics repeat - TeamTalk

Lee Bowyer is hoping for a repeat of last season's goalscoring performance
against Wigan when West Ham open their campaign on August 16. Bowyer, who
missed most of last season with a groin injury, is now close to full fitness
and is relishing the start of the new campaign. The midfielder was on the
scoresheet when The Hammers drew 1-1 with Wigan in the second game of last
season and he would love to do it again at Upton Park . Bowyer told the
club's official website: "It's always exciting when the fixtures come out
because you get to see who you are playing when and when you've got the big
teams and also the newly-promoted teams. "I myself have never played against
Hull so that is one I am looking forward to and knowing what the first
fixture is gives you something to work towards and focus on being part of.
If you look at the first eight games it is a really good chance for a
positive start.
"I have been in and working hard all summer to get fit and I'm feeling good
so I've targeted that Wigan game to make a full return and it would be even
better if I could get another against them. After the way I started last
season and getting on the scoresheet a few times it was a very frustrating
second half to the campaign so I am looking forward to putting that behind
me."

Squad update for pre-season - WHUFC
Craig Bellamy and Kieron Dyer look set to be among those reporting for
pre-season duty in early July
16.06.2008

Alan Curbishley looks set to have a host of players involved again for
pre-season training after the club's medical staff reported positive
progress from Chadwell Heath.

Wales defenders Danny Gabbidon and James Collins missed significant parts of
the 2007/08 campaign but are working hard to overcome their long-term
injuries. The duo's international team-mate Craig Bellamy already appears to
be over his abdominal condition with a couple of lively appearances for
Wales and is expected to commence training with the rest of the first-team
squad from early July. This is also the case for winger Matthew Etherington,
after a groin injury, and Calum Davenport, who has recovered well from a
fractured bone in his neck.

Gabbidon, who has not played since November with a stomach and pelvic
problem, has been in Italy receiving alternative therapy including
osteopathy and strengthening techniques to help his spine to articulate.
This work with specialists has helped his hips and in turn will allow his
condition to improve faster. It is hoped he could return to training during
pre-season. Collins, meanwhile, has again received a positive report from
surgeons in his recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury suffered in
January and should feature in pre-season training. He could return early in
the season.

Another who will be particularly eager to get going is England international
Kieron Dyer. A double leg break at the start of last season meant he played
just three times upon his high-profile move to the club. He has maintained
his fitness work this summer and has had an excellent response to further
surgery. Dyer is on course to start pre-season with the rest of his
team-mates as are Lee Bowyer and Matthew Upson after they continued to focus
on their respective groin and calf problems after the end of the 2007/08
season.

Julien Faubert sat out the last two games in May but is also fully fit after
his previous hamstring trouble. Nigel Quashie missed the entire 2007/08
campaign but is aiming to join in fully from the start of pre-season after
extensive efforts to overcome his foot injury. Finally, Jonathan Spector has
had hip surgery after being diagnosed with torn cartilage and will be out
for up to six months. As it stands, he looks set to be the only West Ham
United first-team player who will definitely not take any part in the summer
programme.

Season begins with Wigan test - KUMB
Filed: Monday, 16th June 2008
By: Staff Writer

West Ham United will begin the 2008/09 season with a home fixture against
Wigan Athletic.

The fixture list for the new season was officially released at 10am this
morning (although early visitors to the KUMB.com forums got a sneak preview
of the full list ahead of the embargo this morning).

Once again the Hammers visit Portsmouth on Boxing Day - whilst Alan
Curbishley's side will have the chance to avenge last season's three
consecutive 4-0 defeats when they face Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea is
successive games once again at the end of November/start of December.

All games are scheduled for 3pm Saturday kick offs unless otherwise stated
...

August 2008

The season begins once again with a home fixture - this time against Wigan
Athletic. Two further (Saturday) games follow before the end of August, also
against teams from the North West as the Hammers travel to Man City before
hosting Blackburn.

September

Due to another international program September also sees just three
fixtures. United travel to newly-promoted West Brom on Saturday 13th before
hosting Newcastle a week later. The month ends with the fist London derby of
the season, a trip to Fulham.

October

Four games this month; October kicks off with a home match against Bolton
after which a two week break ensues. The next game is the trip to Hull City,
playing their first ever season in the top flight. It'll be a far different
proposition however when the Hammers end the month with a home match against
Arsenal and a Tuesday evening trip to Manchester Utd.

November

The busiest month of the season yet with no less than five games. November
begins with a visit to Middlesbrough before home fixtures against Everton
and Portsmouth. The final games of the month see United travel to Sunderland
and Liverpool.

December

The mont of December starts with two of the biggest fixtures on the
calendar; a home match against Tottenham and a trip across the city to
Chelsea. Aston Villa are the visitors a week ahead of Christmas whilst the
Hammers will travel to Portsmouth on Boxing Day for the second successive
season. The month ends with a home fixture against the last of the three
promoted sides, Stoke.

January 2009

Unusually there is no News Year Day fixtire scheduled for 2009. Instead, the
first game of the month is the arduous trip to Newcastle. Two home matches
follow, against Fulham and Hull before the month ends with a trip to
Arsenal.

February

As in August, teams from the North West dominate United's February
programme. Manchester Utd are the visitors on the first Saturday of the
month whilst a trip to Bolton follows a fortnight later. The third and final
game of the month sees the Hammers host Manchester City.

March

Three games in March - and all against teams that the Hammers will be
looking to be ahead if they are to ensure a decent league position. A
Tuesday night trip to Wigan gets March under way before West Brom hit the
Boleyn Ground 11 days later. The third and final game of March is the trip
to blackburn.

April

Possibly the toughest month of them all? It's a decent start with a home
fixture against Sunderland but that is followed by trips to Aston Villa and
Tottenham before Chelsea visit the Boleyn Ground.

May

One of the busiest Mays in recent season sees West Ham end with four
fixtures - two home and two away. United travel to Stoke on the first
Saturday of the month whilst Liverpool provide the opposition at the Boleyn
a week later. The month - and the season ends with a trip to Everton and a
home fixture with Middlesbrough on the final day.

Redknapp eyes double swoop - SSN
Crouch and Solano interest Pompey boss
By Ben Collins Last updated: 16th June 2008

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is hoping to tie up a deal for England
striker Peter Crouch and has confirmed an interest in Peruvian winger
Nolberto Solano. Pompey are in talks with Liverpool regarding Crouch and are
reported to be on the verge of an £8million, four-year deal for the
27-year-old. Crouch is still fondly remembered at Fratton Park after scoring
18 goals in 37 league games for Pompey during the 2001/02 season, although
Redknapp is unsure how close they are to reaching an agreement. "I honestly
don't know what the situation is," he told The News. "(Chief executive)
Peter Storrie deals with that side of things. I tell him who I want and he
does all the dealing with the clubs and the players. "Crouchie is a player I
like - I've made no secret of that - but only at the right money and that is
what Peter Storrie deals with. "Players have got their values and you only
want to pay what you feel is a fair price. If you can't get that, you move
on to someone else."
Solano, however, is available on a free transfer after being released by
West Ham. The 33-year-old joined the Hammers shortly into last season but
the experienced winger has not been offered a new contract at Upton Park.
Solano has now spent 10 years in the Premier League with Newcastle, West Ham
and Aston Villa, and Redknapp believes he would be a valuable addition to
his squad as he leads Pompey into Europe for the first time next season.
"Nobby is a good little footballer and he did well last season at West Ham -
he did a good job for them," he added. "I could have had him last year when
he was on a free. We ended up taking other people in the end. "I know we're
a bit short in wide areas and we certainly need to strengthen there. "But
nothing has happened there - it's not one we're close to doing at the
moment."

Hammers at home to Wigan - SSN
Wigan visit Upton Park on opening day

West Ham's first game of the new Premier League season is a home encounter
with Wigan. Alan Curbishley's side spent the majority of last season lurking
on 10th place, never truly threatening to challenge for a European place,
but generally clear of the relegation fight. Hammers fans will be hoping for
much more this time around, and to avoid the injuries which blighted last
season. A trip to Manchester City and a home meeting with Blackburn Rovers
round off the opening month. Arsenal visit Upton Park on 25th Octorber,
Tottenham make the trip on 6th December and Chelsea arrive on 25th April.

Bilic tipped to take over at West Ham - Guardian Series

CROATIA boss Slaven Bilic has been tipped as a possible successor to Alan
Curbishley at West Ham. The former Hammers player has enjoyed a glittering
start to his managerial career, and after masterminding Croatia's famous 2-1
victory over Germany in the European Championships on Thursday, Bilic has
sparked interest from these shores. According to the People, a poor start to
the season for Curbishley could spell the end of his reign, and it is
believed Bilic, who made 48 appearances for West Ham in two years with the
club, is being lined up as a possible replacement. Croatia's free-flowing
style of play, with which they dispatched pre-tournament favourites Germany,
has attracted plenty of praise, and the money that would be on offer in
England would dwarf the £90,000 contract Bilic is currently on with his
national side.

Keane linked with Hammers striker again - Guardian Series

SUNDERLAND are being linked with West Ham striker Carlton Cole once again,
writes Sam Lom-bor. Black Cats boss Roy Keane is weighing up a move for the
former Chelsea frontman as he seeks cover for crocked centre-forward Kenwyne
Jones. Cole netted only six times for the Hammers last season and they are
prepared to let him go for as low as £2 million according to media reports.
And with Keane having a reported £50 million to spend on transfers, Cole
could well be putting on the red and white of Sunderland next season. It
also seems that with rising youngster Freddy Sears coming through the ranks,
that Cole may be found surplus to requirements at Upton Park.

Former Hammer Salano wanted in the States - Guardian Series

FORMER West Ham midfield Nobby Solano will have to decide whether he heads
across the pond to continue his football career, writes Sam Lom-bor.
With Solano making clear his desire to stay in the Premier League,
Portsmouth have emerged as favourites to sign him, but they face competition
from teams in the MLS. Chivas USA and David Beckham's LA Galaxy have been
reported as being interested in the 34 year-old, who was the first Peruvian
to play in the Premier League. It is not clear yet where the player will end
up, but what is clear is that the Hammers have lost a strong presence in the
dressing room, and will need to dip into the transfer kitty to obtain a
player of similar standard.

Sunderland Football Club are closing on Carlton Cole. Roy Keane is eager to
bolster his attacking options at the Stadium of Light ahead of the new
season, particularly as Kenwyne Jones could spend quite some time on the
sidelines through injury. The Irishman has a reported £50million available
to spend in the summer transfer window, and with this considered, the
possible signing of Cole will seem like a pittance. It is believed West Ham
United are willing to let the striker leave for as little as £2million after
he managed to find the back of the next just six times last season, and
Keane hopes to conclude a deal this week.
