Team news

Tenth-placed West Ham United will look to bounce back from the 1-0 defeat at
Wigan Athletic last Saturday with a fourth home league win in a row. The
club have dispatched Manchester United (2-1), Fulham (2-1) and Liverpool
(1-0) and have not lost at the Boleyn Ground since 15 December. Victory
could potentially move the club up to eighth place and in sight of sixth,
but Alan Curbishley will know Birmingham City, who have fallen to 18th after
Saturday's 1-1 home draw against Derby County, will look to follow Wigan's
lead in the fight for top-flight survival.

Alan Curbishley will assess Julien Faubert after he played the full 90
minutes on Monday in a friendly match against QPR. The French winger had
missed the previous two games with a slight calf strain and the manager
could wait to give him a reserve-team run-out on Tuesday. Nolberto Solano, a
substitute at Wigan, also got another 45 minutes under his belt following
hamstring trouble. Bobby Zamora (knee) and Craig Bellamy (stomach) both got
an hour or so on Monday.

Scott Parker (knee) is due back in three weeks while Kieron Dyer continues
to make good progress from his double leg-break. Henri Camara is back from
the African Cup of Nations - although John Pantsil is still on international
duty with Ghana. James Collins' cruciate ligament damage will keep him out
for at least six months, with Nigel Quashie (foot) and Calum Davenport
(neck) also sidelined. The club's talented youngsters performed well in
midweek, notably James Tomkins and Freddie Sears with England U19s, Mark
Noble with England Under-21s and Jack Collison with Wales U21, the latter
also scoring.

Birmingham, who had Fabrice Muamba and Cameron Jerome alongside Noble for
the Young Lions on Wednesday, were busy in the transfer window, notably
bringing in Everton striker James McFadden, Hibernian defender David Murphy
and Argentinian prodigy Mauro Zarate up front. The club also have Radhi
Jaidi and Mehdi Nafti back from the Africa Cup of Nations after Tunisia's
exit. Birmingham only have one player injured - long-term knee victim Borja
Oubina although Olivier Kapo is suspended after accumulating five cautions.
Gary McSheffrey or Daniel De Ridder will deputise on the left.

Last time out

West Ham United v Wigan Athletic: Green, Neill, Ferdinand, Upson, McCartney,
Ljungberg, Noble (Bowyer 73), Mullins, Etherington (Solano 48), Cole
(Bellamy 68), Ashton
Subs not used: Wright, Spector
Birmingham City v Derby County: Maik Taylor, Kelly, Martin Taylor,
Ridgewell, Murphy, Larsson (Zarate 76), Johnson, Muamba, Kapo, O'Connor,
McFadden
Subs not used: Doyle, Forssell, Jerome, Parnaby

Background

Curbishley's side are in fine league form, with seven wins and five draws
from the last 16 fixtures. Victory could take the Hammers up to eighth -
depending on Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth, who begin the weekend three
and two points ahead respectively. The club are seven points ahead of
Tottenham Hotspur in eleventh, with a game in hand on every other club in
the division bar Liverpool.

The teams' last met on 18 August at the St Andrews, the first away fixture
of the season. After a close-fought encounter, Mark Noble struck the only
goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Colin Doyle
had upended Bellamy.

The lineups were:
West Ham United: Green, Spector (Gabbidon 86), Ferdinand, Upson, McCartney,
Dyer, Noble, Mullins, Etherington, Zamora, Bellamy
Subs not used: Walker, Bowyer, Boa Morte, Ashton

Birmingham City: Doyle, Parnaby, Jaidi, Ridgewell, Kelly, Larsson, Muamba
(Sadler 80), Nafti (Jerome 75), Kapo, O'Connor, Forssell (McSheffrey 65)
Subs not used: Maik Taylor, Vine

The Hammers have still not lost in all eleven league games this season when
they have taken the lead. George McCartney - who like Lucas Neill, Mark
Noble and Luis Boa Morte is on four cautions and would earn a one-match ban
if yellow-carded again before the trip to Fulham on 23 February - is bidding
to make his 31th appearance this season in all competitions. He is the only
West Ham United player who has featured in every game to date, starting in
each one.

In terms of the Premier League, only Green and Upson have played every
minute of the 24 matches. No other top-flight club still has two league
ever-presents while Upson, along with Stephen Kelly of Birmingham, is one of
only two outfield players in the whole division to have achieved that feat.
Ashton, with six goals, five in the league, is the club's leading scorer.

Birmingham have not won since a 3-0 home win against Middlesbrough on 26
December - a run of seven games without victory, including the 2-1 loss at
Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup third round. However, they did earn a 1-1
draw at Arsenal on 12 January and only lost 1-0 at home to Chelsea a week
later. Their last away victory was the 3-2 success at Tottenham Hotspur on 2
December - Alex McLeish's first game in charge.
Kapo and Jerome are the club's leading scorers with five goals apiece, all
of which have come in the top flight. The midlands club may have lost their
last three games against the Hammers but they have the better overall head
to head record.

Upson reveals all on WHUTV - WHUFC
England defender Matthew Upson has sat down to relive a memorable week and
his hopes for Saturday
08.02.2008

Matthew Upson has spoken to WHUTV at length about his "fantastic
opportunity" with England and his desire to keep making progress with West
Ham United.

The central defender is back with the club on a high and preparing for the
visit of former side Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon. He will hope
this weekend to build on the positive experience of playing 90 minutes for
his country against Switzerland on Wednesday in Fabio Capello's first match
in charge of the national team.

"It has been a brilliant week," he said, when sitting back to review the
past few days with WHUTV. "It is something that has happened to me maybe a
bit sooner than I thought was capable of happening. It is a sign of what has
happened in the last six months really. I have got myself fit and I am on a
good run of form."

Of finding out that he was going to win his eighth cap on such a prestigious
evening at the new Wembley, Upson said: "It was a great feeling. We had two
very good days training. The manager had really mixed it up so nobody knew
what the team would be. It was really pleasing when he flipped the paper and
I saw my name on the starting lineup. I was really pleased and ready for the
challenge. I enjoyed every minute of it."

Captain's Blog - Another win wanted - WHUFC
The skipper updates all the latest news from the camp at Chadwell Heath
ahead of a key home encounter
08.02.2008

Lucas Neill is back with West Ham United after a successful international
break for him with Australia and also for his club-mates. The captain is
fully expecting the side to bounce back from last week's setback with
another strong home display.

Last week's result was bitterly disappointing, and left a bad taste in our
mouths, the goal we conceded was avoidable and the level of football we had
to resort to was very much out of character. Without trying to find excuses,
Wigan's pitch is an embarrassment to the Premier League. People pay good
money to travel to watch entertaining games and instead find themselves
watching professional players slicing the ball out of play with regularity
as a result of the playing surface. It really affected our passing style of
play and on the day we were unable to adjust our game to get the result
which would have seen us climb the table.

As a result this weekend nothing but a win will do, we are three wins from
three at home in the league and we must continue that run. I welcome the
fans, staff and players of Birmingham to Upton Park. They need a win for
different reasons so I am sure it will be a hard-fought and physical
contest.

A lot has happened this week on the international scene, Matty Upson played
a full game and was victorious for England and I am led to believe he had a
solid performance. Johnny Pantsil suffered a narrow loss in the Africa Cup
of Nations semi-final with Ghana, but we wish him well for the third placed
play-off. Mark Noble helped lead the Under-21s to the top of their
qualifying group and congrats to young Jack Collison as well who was an
impressive scorer for the Welsh Under-21s and is showing that he has a
bright future in the game. Finally I finished off a busy week with a 3-0 win
in our first World Cup qualifier against Qatar. It made the 46 hours of
travelling worthwhile.

This week we welcome back Henri Camara from a disappointing Africa Cup of
Nations campaign but it was good to see him back in training. We saw Bobby
Zamora get some more match fitness under his belt and we are hopeful of
having his services by the end of the month. Scotty Parker stepped up his
rehabilitation with some light jogging and, to put the record straight,
Julien Faubert maintains the fact he did not speak to any reporters and
undermine the manager or the team with the quotes that were used in the
press this week.

Kick-off: 1500 GMT
Coverage on the BBC Sport website, BBC Radio Five Live & highlights on Match
of the Day

West Ham striker Craig Bellamy has had an abdominal injury and is a concern
after being "sore" three days after a reserve-team game. Mark Noble may be
rested but Henri Camara, Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano should be
available.

Birmingham midfielder Olivier Kapo is suspended but the game could see a
recall for Gary McSheffrey. Mehdi Nafti and Rahi Jaidi are back from Africa
Cup of Nations duty but Franck Queudrue (hamstring) is out.

West Ham (from): Green, Wright, Neill, Spector, Upson, Ferdinand, Gabbidon,

Morte, Ashton, Cole, Camara, Bellamy.

Birmingham (from): Maik Taylor, Doyle, Kelly, Ridgewell, Martin Taylor,
Schmitz, Jaidi, Murphy, Parnaby, Larsson, Muamba, Johnson, Nafti,
McSheffrey, O'Connor, McFadden, Jerome, Forssell.

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley: "We are all very pleased for Matthew Upson
(after playing for England). "He is a very good player, a very good
professional and very good around the training ground. I don't think he has
done himself any harm for the future. "He has got to stay fit and keep
playing well and wait for the next squad."

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Alarm bells are sounding at St Andrews, as Birmingham travel to East London
in their lowest position since the last week of August. Just two victories
in 11 Premier League games under Alex McLeish has seen them slip into the
relegation zone.

West Ham, by comparison have been the model of consistency. They have
remained either side of the half-way line for four months, and in just under
14 months in charge, Alan Curbishley has seen his side win 18 and lose 18 of
their 45 league outings. In Birmingham, he plots tactics against a club he
once played for.

The Hammers have won twice as many league games as Birmingham (10 to five).

This is the first of a trio of Premier League fixtures against London clubs
for Blues, and their record against teams from the capital in this league is
nothing to write home about. They have won one, drawn three and lost nine of
the last 13.

West Ham are looking for a fourth successive Premier League victory over
Birmingham, and a second double over them in as many seasons.

ASHTON is also the Hammers' top Premier League marksmen with five.

The club's Premier League goalscorers list is predominately comprised of
English players (eight of 11).

Matthew UPSON and Robert GREEN are the only remaining players to have been

Neill on round the world trip - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 7th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Hammers captain Lucas Neill has defended his decision to travel 24,000 miles
in order to represent Australia this week. The 29-year-old full-back has
been criticised this season for making the round-the-world trips in order to
represent his country in between West Ham's weekend fixtures. This week the
Sydney-born player flew to Melbourne in order to play for the Socceroos
against minnows Qatar - a game which they coasted 3-0 - and is currently on
his way back to London to prepare for Saturday's Premier League clash with
Birmingham.
Neill's early-season form appeared to suffer occasionally as a result of the
long flights - however he has defended his position by stating that
qualifying for the 2010 World Cup finals would be a 'massive' achievement
for his country. "We want to make the World Cup," he told
footballaustralia.com. "We want to try and get that journey that we had last
time, where we had some amazing memories and basically turned football on
its head and made it an unbelievable sport [in Australia]."
With regard to the charges that his performances for the Hammers are
affected by the long journeys, Neill says that this is not a concern - and
that if anything, he is more worried about the lack of sun in London. "We
have got rid of the jet-lag I think - I'm pretty experienced now in the long
haul flying," he added. "The only thing I was worried about when I got back
home is just how white I am compared to everyone else! I really miss the
Aussie summer and I really haven't had a chance to get under the sun. "There
are some good tans kicking about and the likes of me and Emo [Brett Emerton]
are really struggling ..."

Bellamy: injured again? - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 8th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Craig Bellamy is believed to have suffered a set back in his rehabilitation
process. The Welsh striker, out of action for three months made his comeback
as a substitute against Wigan last weekend and played the last twenty
minutes with no apparent adverse reactions. However strong rumours suggest
that he could be set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines after
suffering stomach problems earlier this week. Hammers boss Alan Curbishley
refused to be drawn on the situation when commenting in yesterday's
pre-match press conference, saying: "He's a bit sore still to be honest.
"He's not 100 per cent how he wants to be but he still done enough in the
reserve game - and when he came on against Wigan - that perhaps not being
100 per cent is not too bad."
Bellamy had managed just nine appearances since his £7.5m summer switch from
Liverpool.

Curbishley: Parker back soon - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 8th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Alan Curbishley has confirmed that Scott Parker is set to return to first
team action by the end of the month. The midfielder is yet to play this year
after sustaining an injury during the 2-1 win over Manchester United on
December 29th. However Curbishley allayed fears suggesting that Parker may
be out until next season. "Parker is about three weeks away contrary to
opinions," he said. "He's in full running and doing as well as we think he
should be doing."
Paker is just one of several expensive summer signings that has barely
featured for the first team this year. The former Charlton man, signed for
£7m last summer has made just 10 appearances this season. Craig Bellamy
(£7.5m) has played nine times, Julien Faubert (£6m) three - all from the
bench, and Kieron Dyer (£7m) hasn't made a first team appearance since last
August.

Noble out? - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 8th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Alan Curbishley has hinted that Mark Noble may miss out against Birmingham
at the weekend. The Hammers boss confirmed that the 20-year-old midfielder
may to be rested after featuring against Wigan, Liverpool and Croatia under
21s since last Wednesday. "He played a big game on Tuesday," said Curbishley
at yesterday's pre-match press conference. "He's played three games in six
days and was a bit stiff yesterday - so we'll see what we've got tomorrow
really. "He ran an enormous amount during the [Liverpool] game. He looked a
little bit tired against Wigan and he's had to go and play again on Tuesday
night and run an enormous amount again. "I'm not in a position to rotate it
too much but what I know when I play Mark Noble is what I'm going to get -
he'll give us everything he's got."
Lee Bowyer is likely to step into Noble's place if the youngster is rested
against Birmingham, who are back in the bottom three despite spending big in
January's transfer window. Elsewhere there is good news ahead of Saturday;
back in contention are Julien Faubert, Nobby Solano and Luis Boa Morte -
although Bobby Zamora is likely to require further match practice before
being considered for selection. "Julien played a full reserve game on
Wednesday; Nobby Solano obviously came on at Wigan and played in the reserve
game as well," added Curbishley. "With Ljungberg, that's three people at the
moment who can play in that position. "We've got Matty Etherington and Boa
Morte on the other side; Freddie can play on the other side too so we are
getting some of the players together."

Fortunately for Curbishley all those players on international duty in
midweek appear to have emerged unscathed.

West Ham v Birmingham preview - SSN
Hammers looking to close the gap on the top six
By Chris Burton Last updated: 8th February 2008

PREDICTIONS:
Skysports.com prediction: 2-0
SKY BET odds: West Ham 4/5, Draw 12/5, Birmingham 7/2
One to Watch: Mark Noble

West Ham are pushing for Europe, while Birmingham are now firmly entrenched
in a relegation battle. The Hammers are just four points off Aston Villa in
sixth and will still harbour ambitions of clinching a Uefa Cup spot. They
are in good form of late as well having won seven and drawn five of their
last 16 Premier League games, and have suffered just one defeat in their
last seven at Upton Park. Birmingham on the other hand have slipped into the
relegation zone on the back of one win in 10 and have dropped points against
fellow strugglers Sunderland and Derby in recent weeks. They have also
struggled on their travels this season losing nine of their 13 games on the
road and will be in for another tough test in East London. The Hammers
recorded a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture back in August and will be looking
to pick up their fourth successive Premier League victory over the Blues.
Alan Cursbishley will asses the fitness of winger Julien Faubert before
deciding whether to include the Frenchman. He did manage 90 minutes for the
reserves on Monday but may need another run out for the second string after
only recently shaking off a calf strain. Nolberto Solano, Bobby Zamora and
Craig Bellamy were also in action earlier in the week and could be included
in the squad. Scott Parker (knee) and Kieron Dyer (broken leg) are still a
few weeks off full fitness, while Calum Davenport (neck), James Collins
(knee) and Nigel Quashie (foot) are also sidelined. Henri Camara has
returned from Africa Cup of Nations duty with Senegal, but John Pantsil is
still in Ghana after featuring in the hosts' semi-final defeat to Cameroon
on Thursday.

Birmingham's Olivier Kapo will miss the game through suspension after
picking up his fifth booking of the campaign against Sunderland 11 days ago.

The absence of the former Juventus winger could give hope of a recall to
either Gary McSheffrey or Daniel De Ridder. With City struggling for goals
of late boss Alex McLeish must decide whether to make changes up front with
Mikael Forssell and Cameron Jerome both in contention for a recall.
Midfielder Mehdi Nafti and defender Rahi Jaidi have returned from the Africa
Cup of Nations but full-back Franck Queudrue is still sidelined with a
hamstring injury.

McCartney wants a quick return to winning ways for the Hammers
By Guardian-series

GEORGE McCartney has sounded the battle cry ahead of West Ham's clash with
Birmingham at Upton Park tomorrow. The 26-year-old believes West Ham need to
get back on the winning trail as soon as possible following Saturday's
defeat at Wigan. The 1-0 loss at the JJB Stadium came against the run of
form - Wigan had never beaten West Ham on the ground, while the Hammers
themselves had suffered only three defeats in 16 matches. But Kevin Kibane's
header was enough to seal the points for the Latics while putting a dent in
the Irons' bid for a top-six finish in the Premier League. Now McCartney -
who played for Northern Ireland in a friendly against Bulgaria in Belfast on
Wednesday night - wants the team to get back to winning ways as soon as
possible. He said: "We have been on a great run of late and we have just got
to pick ourselves up for Birmingham. "Before the Wigan game, we had looked
at the next three matches and said we would maybe try to get six to nine
points out of them. "We haven't picked up anything (at Wigan), so we will
look to Birmingham at home and get back on track - but it is not going to be
easy." McCartney (pictured) has started every one of the Irons' 30 games,
and been part of a tight defence that has leaked just 22 goals in 24 Premier
League games, this season. The goal they conceded against Wigan was
uncharacteristic of the team, but McCartney remained philosophical about the
result. "It was one of them days," he said. "You can't win or get a point
out of every match in the Premier League. "We just had to keep it tight in
injury time at the end of the first half. It was looking 0-0 all over."

Curbishley warns relegation battlers they can't copy West Ham's heroics of
last season
By Guardian-series

ALAN Curbishley has told the teams fighting for their Premier League
survival that they need to pick up points as soon as possible because they
cannot hope to emulate West Ham's achievements of last season. Then, the
Hammers collected an impressive seven wins from their last nine games to
avoid the drop, only completing the feat on the last day of the season.
There are only 13 games left in the remainder of this campaign, but
Curbishley (pictured) feels time is fast running out for those looking to
steer clear of relegation. His side face one of those struggling sides -
Birmingham - at Upton Park tomorrow, and he said: "Birmingham are roughly
where we were last year - we had 20 points. "It looks a long way to 40. It
can be done but to be done the way we did it - to win seven out of nine - is
probably never to be repeated. "Some teams have got to be looking to get
seven wins from the last 13 games, and they need to try and get them as
quickly as possible."
Birmingham suffered a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to basement boys Derby
in their last outing and are in the bottom three after picking up just two
wins from the last 11 league games. But, despite their precarious position,
Curbishley knows a tough afternoon is in store for his team. "The
expectations are full on for us because of where we are and where Birmingham
are, but we know it is just as difficult," he insisted. "If you look at
Derby's equaliser at Birmingham in the last minute, it just shows you
there's no gimmes in the Premier League. "We've drawn at home against Wigan
and Reading and had a tough game against sunderland. "A lot of games are so
tight and you have to perform every week. "If you're not right you can get
lucky - though invariably that doesn't work out too many times - but if
you're playing as well you can then you have a chance."
The Hammers themselves will be going into the game desperately looking to
put things right following the 1-0 defeat at Wigan on Saturday. Curbishley
saw that match as a massive chance to close the gap on the teams directly
above them in the table and continue the club's push for a top-six spot, and
said: "We were so disappointed because of the performance, the clubs around
us not doing so well and the (large) support we had. "Also, the nature of
the defeat and how it occurred, when I picked a side to deal with set plays
and they've not done it." He added: "We do need to bounce back because we
know what is at stake at the weekend. "The two teams above us are playing
away from home and if we get the result it will be a big lift for us. "If we
can do things right we should be looking to catch one or two of them teams -
but we've got to win the majority of our 14 games to stand any chance."

WEST HAM v Birmingham: O'Neill doubtful after gruelling flight - Daily Mail
Last updated at 12:49pm on 8th February 2008

West Ham captain Lucas Neill will have to overcome a gruelling 24,000-mile
round trip if he is to feature against Birmingham at Upton Park tomorrow.
Neill flew to Melbourne immediately after last weekend's defeat at Wigan and
helped Australia open their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-0 win
over Qatar. West Ham also had England's Matthew Upson and Northern Ireland's
George McCartney on international duty, though both were closer to home and
came through unscathed. Mark Noble may be rested after playing three games
in six days but Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano both came through a
reserve game against QPR on Monday and could be in the selection mix. West
Ham also have on-loan striker Henri Camara back in training after he
returned from the Africa Nations Cup. But there are concerns over Craig
Bellamy who has been sidelined with an abdominal injury and reported being
"sore" three days after the reserve-team game.

Squad from: Green, Wright, Neill, Spector, Upson, Ferdinand, Gabbidon,
McCartney, Faubert, Bowyer, Ljungberg, Noble, Mullins, Etherington, Boa
Morte, Ashton, Cole, Camara, Bellamy.

Web Digest [ West Ham United ] - 8th February 2008

Mullins 'ready to go again' - WHUFC
The experience of last week's disappointment should fire West Ham United on,
says Hayden Mullins
08.02.2008

Hayden Mullins is ready for another "tough game" this weekend as West Ham
United welcome Birmingham City looking to make it four straight league wins
at home.

After last weekend's disappointment of losing 1-0 to a Wigan Athletic side
who are fighting for Premier League survival, Mullins is aware this
Saturday's visitors are going to be similarly motivated. Indeed, Birmingham
have dropped into the 18th position vacated by Wigan and therefore arrive at
the Boleyn Ground equally determined to get out of relegation trouble.

"It is another tough game," the combative midfielder said. "We know it is
not going to be easy as you can't underestimate any team in this league.
Birmingham are going to make it hard but it is just a case of get on with
it. We have to be on the ball because if we miss out again on another three
points we could find ourselves with a lot to do."

The 28-year-old is referring to the club's hopes of pushing into the
European places, with all concerned knowing victory could see West Ham
United jump two spots from tenth and have sixth place in sight. Anything
else might allow the clubs below to close the gap further. "We knew Wigan
was a chance to push up the league and one we didn't take. We missed out but
we are going to try and get back to winning ways on Saturday."

Helping the cause will be the conditions at the Boleyn Ground, with the
boggy pitch at the JJB Stadium last weekend making "a massive difference to
the football we like to play". Mullins added: "We like to get it down and
play. We had to scrap it out which I think suited Wigan a bit better than
us." Also in the advantage column this weekend will be strong home support
after yet another "brilliant" display by the travelling faithful last time
out.

He added: "That is what we need. They are going to help us no end if we are
going to push for Europe. That's what we are trying to do and the support
has been absolutely brilliant. After Wigan we have regrouped and we are
ready to go again.

Pantsil suffers African heartbreak - WHUFC
John Pantsil's Ghana will have to content themselves with third place at
best from the Africa Cup of Nations
07.02.2008

John Pantsil's Ghana have seen their dream of winning the 2008 Africa Cup of
Nations end at the semi-final stage.

The host nation were beaten 1-0 by Cameroon with Alain Nkong scoring the
only goal of the game in the 71st minute. The goal came largely against the
run of play with Ghana having had several opportunities themselves to open
the scoring including a header by West Ham United right-back Pantsil, who
was playing at centre-back to cover for the suspended captain John Mensah.

Cameroon finished with ten men after Andre Bikey was sent off in the dying
seconds but there was not enough time for the Black Stars to turn things
around. Pantsil, playing in his third finals, will now have to content
himself with Saturday's third-placed play-off against Ivory Coast. Henri
Camara had already headed back to England, having been eliminated with
Senegal in the group stage. Cameroon will meet Egypt, 4-1 winners against
the Ivorians, in Sunday's final.

Upson example to inspire others - WHUFC
Alan Curbishley is looking for more of his West Ham United players to follow
Matthew Upson's England lead
07.02.2008

Alan Curbishley believes West Ham United have a "healthy contingent" of
players that can take heart from Matthew Upson forcing his way into the
England set-up.

"They all can take inspiration from Matthew Upson," he said after the No6's
solid display in the 2-1 win against Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday
night. "We have got a bit of a spine in our squad. Rob Green and Anton
Ferdinand are playing well and [Fabio Capello] would have taken note of that
in the last couple of weeks." As well as putting forward the names of Scott
Parker and Kieron Dyer as future candidates, Curbishley added that "you have
got Dean Ashton who they will be looking at and Mark Noble is in there as
well".

Regarding Noble, who followed up his match-winning display against Liverpool
on 30 January with run-outs against Wigan Athletic last Saturday and then
for Stuart Pearce's Under-21s in a 3-0 victory against the Republic of
Ireland on Tuesday, Curbishley said: "He is playing regularly for the U21s
and the Liverpool game demonstrated what he is about. He ran an enormous
amount during the game. What I know when I play Mark Noble is he is going to
give us everything he is got. It hasn't gone unnoticed and Stuart Pearce is
a big fan.

"We have got a healthy contingent of players that Capello should look at. I
think that [his adviser Franco] Baldini who does a lot of the scouting was
at our two Man City games, he was at the Liverpool game. We know we have
been well watched so anyone who is playing at the moment has got to be
looking to impress. If there is a small group of English players out there
who consider themselves with a chance of playing, they have got to be
putting it in week in, week out."

For now, it is Upson who has made the break and Curbishley underlined that
"we are all very pleased for Matty". He added: "He has worked ever so hard.
I know all the games have been looked at. We are really pleased for him." On
whether he has done enough to remain in the squad when the likes of John
Terry and Ledley King are fit for next month's trip to play France in Paris,
Curbishley added: "He has got himself there, he has not done himself any
harm. He has got to stay fit, keep playing well and wait for the next squad.

"He has shown why we bought him. He is a very good player, a very good
professional and very good around the training ground. We knew what we were
getting. We were just disappointed we didn't have him for the run-in last
season. He has shown what he's about since he has got himself right. On and
off the field, he is totally professional."

Players winging their way back - WHUFC
Nolberto Solano and Julien Faubert are getting closer and closer to Alan
Curbishley's starting lineup
08.02.2008

Alan Curbishley has extra competition in wide attacking positions as more
players come into contention for first-team selection for the visit of
Birmingham City.

After Monday's friendly against Queen's Park Rangers, Julien Faubert and
Nolberto Solano are vying for inclusion - although the former may first be
given another reserve-team run-out on Tuesday. Following his recovery from
hamstring trouble, Solano has already had an extended substitute's
appearance in the 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic last Saturday while Freddie
Ljungberg, Matthew Etherington and Luis Boa Morte are also in the mix.

"[Julien] played the full 90 minutes which he has desperately needed to do.
He may need one more game on Tuesday. I want the West Ham fans to see him as
opposed to seeing someone who is not 100 per cent. He picked up this calf
strain after the Manchester City game. He then got himself right, playing
the full 90 minutes, I have just got to have a look at it."

In central midfield, reported that Scott Parker was "about three weeks
away". He added: "He is in full running, he is doing as well as we think he
should be doing. If we can get one or two of the others back we can have
that competition we need. We do need to get them back to give us that
freshness and us all a lift."

The manager is mindful that Lucas Neill, George McCartney, Mark Noble and
Luis Boa Morte are all one yellow card away from a one-match ban for five
cautions this season - with that threat remaining until the final whistle of
the Fulham game on 23 February. Regarding Noble, Curbishley was also aware
he has played three games in six days - including an impressive stint for
England Under-21s on Tuesday night.

Neill, McCartney and Matthew Upson have also been on national-team duty,
with the manager stating their fitness will be fully assessed on Thursday
and Friday. Further forward, Henri Camara has returned from the Africa Cup
of Nations with Senegal, where he scored on his only start, while Bobby
Zamora (knee) and Craig Bellamy (stomach) are being assessed as part of
their rehabilitation. Referring to Bellamy, Curbishley said: "He is a bit
sore still. He is not 100 per cent how he wants to be."

Faubert happy at West Ham United - WHUFC
France winger Julien Faubert has reiterated his happiness with life at the
Boleyn Ground
07.02.2008

Julien Faubert has refuted comments suggesting he was unhappy with the
training methods at West Ham United since joining the club last summer from
Bordeaux. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and I am really
enjoying every minute," he said. The France winger added: "Everything here
is very professional and my team-mates are all top-class players who have
been totally supportive. I hope between now and the end of the season to
make a big impact and help the club finish as high as possible."

Johnny come home - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 7th February 2008

John Paintsil's Ghana are out of the African Nations Cup after going down
1-0 to Cameroon in this evening's first semi-final. The Black Stars, playing
in front of their home crowd failed to make the final thanks to a 71st
minute winner from Alain Nkong, making his first start for his country in
seven years.
The game was marred by a bizarre sending off for Cameroon's Andre Bikey, who
received his marching orders in the final minute of the game after pushing
over a medical assistant who was attempting to remove Biki's team mate
Rigobert Song from the pitch. He misses Sunday's final as a result; the
Cameroon - who will face Egypt in the final - will be seeking to win their
fifth ANC title. Paintsil - who played the full 90 minutes - is set to
return to England following this weekend's third place play-off against the
Ivory Coast, and will therefore miss Saturday's Premier League clash with
Birmingham at The Boleyn Ground.

Curbishley's delight - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 7th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Alan Curbishley says he was 'delighted' at Matthew Upson's inclusion in
Fabio Capello''s first England team. The Hammers centre-half played a full
90 minutes last night as Capello's reign got off to a perfect start with a
2-1 win over 2008 European Championship joint hosts Switzerland. Despite
making one or two minor errors Upson's performance was generally faultless -
and club manager Curbishley says he couldn't be happier for a player he
signed from this weekend's opponents Birmingham a year ago. "Matthy's worked
every so hard since he's been at the club," said Curbishley this morning.
"I'm delighted for him. "He came this time last year and got injured
straight away but worked hard over the summer and has played every game. He
has now got his just reward because he has been very consistent. "He has
got himself extremely fit and he is very professional on and off the pitch.
He has been given the opportunity [by Capello] and will do his utmost to
stay in there." Upson's appearance in the new-look England side was his
eighth run-out for the national team - and his first in three years.

Curbs delighted for Upson - SSN
Hammers boss pays tribute to defender
By Lewis Rutledge Last updated: 7th February 2008

Alan Curbishley believes Matthew Upson's inclusion in the England side was
fully deserved after a consistent season for West Ham. Upson has been an
ever-present in the West Ham side and his accomplished displays earned him a
spot in England's starting XI on Wednesday night. He was solid in central
defence as England ran out 2-1 winners against Switzerland in Fabio
Capello's first game in charge. Curbishley is happy for Upson and believes
he could prove difficult to dislodge from the team. "I'm delighted for
Matty. He's worked every so hard since he's been at the club," Curbishley
told Sky Sports News. "He came this time last year and got injured straight

Duo set to defy bosses' wishes - SSN
Neill and Cahill refuse to let their country down
By Chris Burton Last updated: 7th February 2008

Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill are prepared to risk incurring the wrath of their
clubs by continuing to play in Australia's World Cup qualifiers. Both men
featured in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Qatar as the Socceroos got their 2010
qualifying campaign off to the perfect start and have every intention of
continuing to make the long haul to represent their country in the future.
Australia's next game is against China on 26th March, right in the middle of
a busy period for the Premier League, but West Ham defender Neill insists
that no amount of pressure from his club boss Alan Curbishley will prevent
him from joining up with his country. "People will say 'why would you want
to go and play for Australia in the middle of two English Premier League
games?' (I say) Because I'm playing for Australia and I want to go to the
World Cup," Neill said. "It's an honour, it's a privilege and I'm sure there
are millions and millions of others who would want to be doing what we are
doing. I'm not taking it for granted. "If it was him (Curbishley) going to
represent England he wouldn't have an argument and that's the only case we
have to put forward to him."
Everton boss David Moyes claimed that Cahill was suffering with a slight
hamstring problem before the Qatar game, but the midfielder has come out and
denied those suggestions, and has made it clear that he would have joined up
with Pim Verbeek's squad regardless of whether he had an injury or not.
"He (Verbeek) came to Everton to meet the manager, it wasn't one of the best
meetings in the world, but I've got to keep them both happy and that's what
I will do," Cahill said. "I have to play well for Everton and I have to play
well for Australia. Fifty thousand people came to see the boys play (Qatar)
and they deserve that. "Even before I got here I was reading things that I
was injured and that I wasn't coming and wasn't going on the plane. "But I
was still going to get on the plane injured or not injured, just to be part
of the squad, so we are just showing our commitment and it's great to have
got three points."

Player Of The Month - January - West Ham Online

MATTHEW UPSON

Games in January

Arsenal (a)
Manchester City (h) cup
Fulham (h)
Manchester City (a) cup
Manchester City(a)
Liverpool (h)

Matthew Upson is the player of the month for January after a string of solid
performances earned him an England call up. He has been runner up last month
where he had claimed his first goal for the club against Manchester United.
Upson was revealed as the vice captain during the game against Fulham in the
absence of Lucas Neill and he lead the team well in a 2-1 victory. Upson's
form has been getting better and better with each month and his England call
up was fully deserved despite certain corners of the media questioning his
inclusion. I thought his best display actually came in the 1-0 defeat
against Manchester City in the cup. He was terrific in the air and read the
game beautifully. Was a important part of the side which kept a clean sheet
against Liverpool as he kept Dirk Kyut quiet throughout. Overall it has been
a fantastic month for Matthew Upson and with his injury problems looking
well behind him, I would think he will be in the running for hammer of the
year.
In second place was another centre half with Anton Ferdinand pulling in a
number of votes. Anton scored the winner against Fulham but it is his
defending that has been catching the eye with solid performances becoming a
consistant part of his game.

Previous Winners

August - Mark Noble
September - Dean Ashton
October - Robert Green
November - Carlton Cole
December - Nolberto Solano

Thank you to everyone who voted.

Hammers boss warns players its a team game
By Guardian-series

WEST Ham boss Alan Curbishley has defended his selection policies and warned
his players that he is only out to get results - not keep them happy. The
Irons chief (pictured) has also fended off criticism of his training methods
after coming under fire from two of his players. Julien Faubert made
comments on a French radio programme about the lack of attention to tactical
detail in training. His remarks follow reports that Dean Ashton blamed a
lack of first team starts for his omission from Fabio Capello's first
England squad - the striker has often been overlooked as Curbishley opts to
use Carlton Cole as a lone striker this season. But, speaking ahead of his
side's clash with Birmingham at Upton Park on Saturday, Curbishley said: "My
only aim is to get a result, its not to keep people happy. "When I pick a
side to do a job I expect certain things and I have changed formations
during games - it's a team effort, not for individuals."
Things could get even tougher for Ashton following the return to fitness of
Craig Bellamy. The Wales skipper - out for three months with an abdominal
problem - came on as a late substitue against Wigan on Saturday and followed
it up with a goal in a specially-arranged practice match on Monday. He could
be in line for a recall to the starting line up as Curbishley looks to find
his best formula up front. "The make up of Carlton Cole and Dean Ashton is
that they've got to work at it a bit more because as a pair they can be
similar," he said. "Craig looks to get in behind the defence - he offers us
something else. "He came through the reserve game and is a bit sore but
still did enough in the game to suggest that, even though he's not 100 per
cent, he's still not too bad."
Meanwhile, Curbishley was quick to shrug off the criticism from Faubert. The
Frenchman - who has made just three late substitution appearances for the
club because of an achilles injury - claimed there were gaps in tactical and
defending aspects during training, while also insisting that players "kick
you" in the Premier League. But Curbishley said: "He has hardly been around
us. "He has only been in three squads. That was against Fulham, Manchester
City in the FA Cup game where he came on for 20 minutes and in the
Manchester City league game. "We haven't seen him since then because he
picked up a calf strain. "In five or six months he has probably trained with
the first team, in terms of being near the first team, on two or three days.
"And he doesn't mind kicking one or two people either. He is very aggressive
with things."

Curbs brushes off criticism - Setanta
by Joseph Caron Dawe, 07 February 2008

Alan Curbishley has defended his training methods and selection policy after
coming under fire from two of his players over the past week. West Ham
winger Julien Faubert complained about a lack of attention to tactical
detail in training and striker Dean Ashton said he felt his omission from
Fabio Capello's first England squad had been down to his irregular starts
for The Hammers. "It is a team effort, not for individuals," said
Curbishley. "It is about the make-up of the side and I have changed
formations during games. My only aim is to get a result. I am not here to
keep people happy. "Carlton Cole and Dean Ashton have got to work at their
partnership a bit more because as a pair they can be very similar. "I think
Craig Bellamy offers us something different. He is one player who looks to
get in behind defences."
Bellamy looks set to make a return to action for the Londoners starting line
up for the clash with Birmingham on Saturday following his substitute
appearance against Wigan last weekend, which came after a three-month
lay-off with an abdominal injury. Meanwhile, Curbishley opted to take
Faubert's comments in a humorous manner. "He has hardly been around us. He
has only been in three squads. That was against Fulham, Manchester City in
the FA Cup game where he came on for 20 minutes and in the Manchester City
league game," said the West Ham boss. "We haven't seen him since then
because he picked up a calf strain. "In five or six months he has probably
trained with the first team, in terms of being near the first team, on two
or three days.
"And he doesn't mind kicking one or two people either. He is very aggressive
with things!"

Upson enjoys England victory - WHUFC
Matthew Upson made a good return to the international fold with a solid
display at Wembley on Wednesday
06.02.2008

Matthew Upson played the full 90 minutes as England ran out 2-1 winners
against Switzerland at Wembley in Fabio Capello's first game in charge.

The 28-year-old, winning his eighth cap, partnered former Hammers
centre-back Rio Ferdinand in central defence and turned in a solid
performance in keeping with his progress for Alan Curbishley's in-form West
Ham United this season. Reflecting after the game, Upson said he had enjoyed
the whole experience of linking up with the Italian manager's squad - and
not just the game itself.

"To get the call was really pleasing," he told Sky Sports, admitting that he
had been "optimistic" it would come. "I have enjoyed my time and I am really
happy to be here. The manager has an idea of what type of player he wants
and how he wants to play. International football is different to the
Premiership - it is at a slower pace and more technical. [Capello's
approach] is very detailed and positionally [you have to] be immaculate."

In a first half of few incidents, Upson found himself with an opportunity to
head for goal in the 40th minute, rising high to meet an inswinging corner.
Moments later, England were in front when Joe Cole's skill allowed Jermaine
Jenas to tap in. Switzerland kept going, however, and substitute Eren
Derdiyok levelled matters with a neat finish in the 58th minute.

On the hour, Upson had the chance to restore England's lead only to go down
under pressure from a Swiss defender just as he seemed certain to connect.
Barely had the protests died down than Steven Gerrard's precise pass found
Shaun Wright-Phillips, on for Jenas, in front of goal and he slotted into
the net. Upson then had to be alert in the final seconds to block a
scrambled shot.

Over in Belfast, George McCartney played the first 45 minutes for Northern
Ireland in their 1-0 defeat by Bulgaria. Like Upson, McCartney has been an
ever-present for his club this season. Earlier on Wednesday, Lucas Neill
helped Australia to a 3-0 victory against Qatar in Melbourne, the first
match in their bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Jonathan Spector,
Freddie Ljungberg and Nolberto Solano were all focusing on club commitments
this week while Danny Gabbidon and Craig Bellamy were withdrawn from the
Wales squad to face Norway.

Neill skippers Australia to success - WHUFC
Lucas Neill played a captain's role as the Socceroos began their bid to
reach the 2010 World Cup in style
06.02.2008

Lucas Neill led from the back as Australia recorded a solid 3-0 victory
against Qatar on Wednesday.

The match in Melbourne was the opening game of Australia's qualification
programme for the 2010 World Cup. The Socceroos are now based in the Asian
continental zone and have been drawn in qualifying Group 1 - along with Iraq
and China in a tough four-nation section. Iraq are the reigning Asian
champions while China reached the 2002 World Cup.

After today's contest - which saw Josh Kennedy, Tim Cahill and Mark
Bresciano all score inside 32 minutes - Australia are next in action on 2
June when they welcome Iraq before the reverse fixture is played just five
days later. If Australia finish in first or second, they will progress to
the next stage which will see two groups of five teams. The top two teams
from both pools will then go automatically to the World Cup in South Africa
- a fifth team will play-off against a nation from the Oceania zone for
another spot.

International round up - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 6th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

There were mixed fortunes for West Ham players involved in internationals
tonight. Matthew Upson won his eighth cap for England in their 2-1 win over
Switzerland at Wembley, playing the entire 90 minutes. However George
McCartney ended up on the losing side as Northern Ireland went down 1-0 at
home to Bulgaria. Goals from Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas and Chelsea's Shaun
Wright-Phillips gave the new-look England side a narrow victory in their
first game under Fabio Capello. England - who also featured former Hammers
David James, Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole - took the lead five minutes ahead
of the break through Jenas before the Swiss equalised 13 minutes into the
second half through Eren Derdiyok. However Switzerland enjoyed parity for
just three minutes before Wright-Phillips scored the winning goal from close
range. Meanwhile Nigel Worthington's reign as manager of Northern Ireland
got off to a losing start thanks to Martin Petrov's 38th minute winner at
Windsor Park. Petrov's effort hit the back of the net after taking a
deflection off Ireland's Jonny Evans; West Ham's George McCartney, like team
mate Upson, played the full 90 minutes.

Lucas Neill's Socceroos got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a
flyer in Melbourne this morning. The Australians, captained by West Ham's
29-year-old full-back strolled to victory against Qatar in the first Group A
fixture of their journey to the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa,
running out 3-0 winners. The victory was never in doubt as the Aussies,
under the charge of new manager Pim Verbeek completely controlled the game
against the weakest team in their qualifying section with goals coming from
Karlsruhe's Josh Kennedy, Everton's Tim Cahill and Palermo's Mark Bresciano
- all inside the opening 33 minutes. So enthused by the win was one Aussie
journalist that he likened the 'Roos attacking play to 'slicing the Qatari
defence apart like a Japanese chef preparing blowfish.' Hammers captain
Neill - who played the full 90 minutes - is already on his way back to
London in order to return in time for Saturday's Premier League fixture
against Birmingham.

Faubert attacks Curbs' tactics - SSN
French winger stunned at training sessions
By Chris Burton Last updated: 7th February 2008

Julien Faubert has criticised West Ham boss Alan Curbishley for his lack of
tactical knowledge. The French international, who joined the Hammers from
Bordeaux over the summer, has only recently recovered from a long-term
injury but still feels that he has seen enough to pass judgement on his
coach.
The winger has been left stunned by how little time is dedicated to tactical
preparation before matches and feels that it is an issue which is hindering
the club's progress. "We have gaps in that area of the game, our tactics and
on the defending and positional aspects," Faubert said in the Daily Star.
"We rarely speak tactics at training, and since I've been here we have done
just two tactical training sessions. "Instead we just do games, try to play
in little spaces with everybody in the front. The mentality here is
different. "Players kick you, then you kick them, but nobody complains, it's
just part of the game."

Upson's World Cup aim - SSN
Defender looks to cement England spot
Last updated: 6th February 2008

Matthew Upson says he has a 'huge hunger' to be part of an England squad
which qualifies for the World Cup. The West Ham United defender has been
included in Fabio Capello's squad for the new coach's first game in charge
against Switzerland. The centre-half is tipped to start alongside Rio
Ferdinand at Wembley in what would be his first international appearance for
over three years. "I've never been to a major championship," said Upson in
The Sun. "I've got a huge hunger to do that. "If I perform at the level
which I know I can, then I want to start putting myself in a position where,
hopefully, the England coach will be thinking about picking me. "Playing for
England is a massive target and is the one personal achievement I would love
to achieve again. "I am pleased with my form and how things are going. I am
working hard and being as consistent as I can be. I am getting better and
working on things I must improve. "I have some targets that I want to meet
and I am working hard to achieve those."

Hammers ready to open Trap door - teamTalk

West Ham winger Julien Faubert claims Giovanni Trapattoni has emerged as a
possible candidate to fill the club's director of football vacancy. The
French winger put the Italian coach's name firmly in the frame after being
questioned on a French radio programme. Trapattoni has also been linked with
the Republic of Ireland vacancy, with Billy Davies and Terry Venables also
thought to be in the running. Trapattoni, who is 68, is currently the coach
at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, but for a man who has been coaching
teams since 1974, he may well jump at the chance to act as a director of
football.
Faubert revealed a French-speaking Italian West Ham employee, who helps the
midfielder with translation, told the £6million summer signing that the
68-year-old's arrival is a possibility. Faubert said: "Trapattoni would be a
huge boost for our tactics because we have gaps in that area of the game, on
the defending and position aspects."
Hammers manager Alan Curbishley may not be too pleased to hear that last
remark, but the possibility of bringing someone with Trapattoni's experience
to the club, is not one to dismiss lightly. The Italian is Italy's most
successful club coach ever, having won seven league titles with Juventus and
Internazionale, though his last Scudetto was in 1989. He was the Juventus
coach in 1985 when they beat Liverpool to win the European Cup in the Heysel
Stadium and in 1997 he became the first Italian coach to win a league title
abroad with Bayern Munich. In fact 'Il Trap' is one of only two managers to
win the domestic league in four different countries after also guiding
Benfica and Red Bull to their respective titles. However his spell in charge
of the Italian national team was a disappointing one. The Azzurri bowed out
of the 2002 World Cup with an extra-time defeat to South Korea in the last
16 and they failed to advance beyond the group stage at Euro 2004. The only
other man that has been linked with the job has been Dutch coach Stan
Valckx, who is currently the director of football at PSV Eindhoven.

Faubert slams Curbishley over his management style - Daily Mail
By SIMON JONES - More by this author »
Last updated at 23:06pm on 6th February 2008

Julien Faubert is on a collision course with Alan Curbishley after attacking
the West Ham boss's management style. The French winger, signed from
Bordeaux for £6million last summer, said: 'We rarely speak tactics at
training. Since I've been here we have done just two tactical training
sessions.
'Instead we just do games, try to play in little spaces with everybody in
the front. Players kick you, then you kick them, but nobody complains, it's
just part of the game.' Faubert, who has missed most of the season with an
Achilles injury, added that former Italy manager Giovanni Trapattoni was
being lined up as director of football — a claim denied by the club.

Faubert Wants Trapattoni At Upton Park - goal.com

West Ham midfielder Julien Faubert could be in trouble with Alan Curbishley
after suggesting that he would like Giovanni Trapattoni to take over at the
club. French international Faubert claims that the Italian coach, who is
also in the frame for the Republic of Ireland national job, would be the
ideal man to sort out what he thinks are tactical deficiencies at Upton
Park. "He would be a huge boost for our tactics because we have gaps in that
area of the game, on the defending and positioning aspects," Faubert told
Radio Monte Carlo. "His arrival is possible, it is up in the air. I don't
know if it will happen or not.
"I have a person at the club who speaks French and helps me with the
translation and he is Italian and speaks to me (about Trapattoni's possible
arrival)," added the 24-year-old. The Frenchman also spoke about his
difficultly in adapting to English football. "They do everything upside down
and everything is different here and the league can't be compared to the
French one," said the former Cannes and Bordeaux player. "They fight for
every ball and the refs don't whistle often. Then, the games are much
quicker, they are not focused on tactics at all, there is no time to rest.
Faubert also said he was surprised by the lack of tactical training sessions
since he joined the east London club for £6 million last summer. "We rarely
speak tactics at training," he revealed. "It's only based on little games
and since I've been here we have just done two tactical training sessions,
we just do games, try to play in little spaces with everybody in the front."
Faubert still hasn't recovered from the serious Achilles injury that has
kept him out for most of the season. He did, however, play in a recent
practice match against QPR and hopes to return soon.

West Ham face new £7m lawsuit over Tevez deal - The Independent
Thursday, 7 February 2008

The saga surrounding Carlos Tevez's controversial season at West Ham United
is set to rumble on for up to another nine months with the player's
representative Kia Joorabchian suing the Premier League club for £7m.

West Ham said yesterday they will contest vigorously the claim by
Joorabchian, which relates to alleged unpaid fees and costs, while the
businessman himself is understood to be bullish about his chances and is
also prepared for the issue to go to court.

Events will also be monitored closely by Sheffield United, who were
relegated to the Championship last season but have tried to get West Ham
demoted for fielding Tevez after being found guilty of breaching the rules
on third-party ownership. A Football Association arbitration panel is due to
rule next month on their claim.

Joorabchian has filed a writ at the Chancery Division of the High Court
although it may take several weeks for the particulars of claim to be lodged
and a further nine months for it to come to court – although it's highly
unlikely, given the potential for embarrassment on all sides, that events
will go that far. According to the writ, Joorabchian is seeking an
outstanding sum of £4.5m, plus a further £2.6m which, he alleges, was due to
be paid to him by West Ham on 31 January.

Joorabchian is claiming he has documentary and taped evidence to back his
case. He is not seeking any money on behalf of Tevez but is claiming he is
entitled to payments relating to loan fees, insurance for the player and
other agents' fees he believes he was contractually entitled to.

The first part of the claim is understood to be linked to promises made by
the club's former chairman, Terry Brown, and managing director, Paul
Aldridge, who negotiated the original loan deal which took Tevez and
Argentine team-mate Javier Mascherano to West Ham in August 2006.

The £2.6m is understood to relate to a verbal agreement Joorabchian says he
had with Eggert Magnusson – the club's former chairman and frontman for the
Icelandic takeover by billionaire Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson in November 2006 –
who has since sold his stake and left the club.

West Ham maintain no verbal or written agreements exist to back up
Joorabchian's claims. They also believe that any outstanding issues with
Joorabchian or Tevez's owners, Just Sports Inc and Media Sports Investment,
were settled by last August's out-of-court deal which secured the player's
transfer to Manchester United. Then West Ham were paid £2m by the agents for
the release of Tevez's registration. United agreed to pay Just Sport and MSI
a £5m loan fee plus £5m a year to Tevez in wages. The deal avoided a court
battle which could have cost West Ham £35m.

Heart scare forces ex-Hammer Clarke to quit - Guardian Series
By George Bowstead

FORMER West Ham defender Clive Clarke is set to retire from football after
suffering a heart attack during a game last year. His contract with Premier
League Sunderland will be cancelled by mutual agreement following medical
advice. The 28-year-old signed for the Hammers from Stoke in July 2005,
making three appearances, before moving to Wearside 13 months later. Clarke
suffered a heart attack at half-time during a Carling Cup tie last August
while playing for Leicester City on loan. He has not played since that night
in August when he was taken ill at the City Ground as the Foxes took on
Forest.
The former Republic of Ireland international had to be revived twice by
paramedics after his heart stopped and has since been fitted with a
pacemaker.

Cahill, Neill pledge allegiance - foxsports.com.au

February 07, 2008 AUSTRALIA stars Lucas Neill and Tim Cahill are willing to
risk angering their English clubs to be part of the Socceroos' World Cup
qualifier in China next month. Neill, Cahill and other European-based
Socceroos have pledged their availability for the next group match against
China at altitude in Kunming on March 26 despite it being a midweek match
sandwiched between club games. The match promises a repeat of the "three
games in a week, across two time zones" schedule the European-based Aussies
confronted and conquered in their 3-0 win over Qatar in this week's opening
World Cup qualifier in Melbourne. Playing at altitude with little time to
adjust and the physical challenges that represents adds a further hurdle to
both the match and recovery. Socceroos skipper Neill said he would continue
to make himself available for his country regardless of any pressure his
English club West Ham and manager Alan Curbishley may put on him to dodge
international duty. "People say `why would you want to go and play for
Australia in the middle of two (Barclays) Premier League games?' (I say)
Because I'm playing for Australia and I want to go to the World Cup," Neill
said. "It's an honour, it's a privilege and I'm sure there are millions and
millions of others who would want to be doing what we are doing. I'm not
taking it for granted. "If it was him (Curbishley) going to represent
England he wouldn't have an argument and that's the only case we have to put
forward to him."
Cahill, who on his performance against Qatar looms as the most important
player in the Socceroos' long World Cup qualification road, said his
participation in the match was never in doubt. Everton club manager David
Moyes had hinted at a hamstring injury, and admitted publicly he didn't want
Cahill to make the trip. Cahill defied the pressure, then produced an
outstanding 65-minute performance including a goal before he and his
teammates departed Melbourne for the long trip home to Europe and their
weekend club matches. "Before I even got here, I was reading things that I
was injured and I wasn't coming and I wasn't getting on the aeroplane. I was
still getting on the areoplane, injured or not injured, just to be part of
the squad," Cahill said. "We just showed our commitment."
While the four games in this qualifying stage following the China match will
be played in the European off-season, the club versus country issue is set
to escalate should the Socceroos advance to the next phase of Asian World
Cup qualifying. That will involve another eight internationals, plus the
prospect of more should Australia find themselves involved in play-offs.
Celtic striker Scott McDonald pointed to the care the Socceroos staff had
given the players in bringing them home and sending them back to their clubs
under medical supervision. Head doctor Jeff Steinweg accompanied the
European-based players to Australia, while head physiotherapist Phil Coles
left with the team for Europe. "The Australian staff have been fantastic. We
had the doctor fly all the way over to London so he could fly back with us
and make sure we were in tip-top shape," McDonald said. "We've got someone
flying over with us tonight as well so hopefully that will hold us in good
stead (to be fit for our weekend matches). "It's important the relationships
between club and country are very good. The new manager (Pim Verbeek) spoke
to all the club managers and there seems to be a good relationship there, so
long may that continue."

Neill set for Australia challenge - WHUFC
Lucas Neill will be in action on Wednesday as the Socceroos begin their
World Cup qualifying programme
05.02.2008

Lucas Neill will be in action for Australia from 8.30am British time on
Wednesday.

The West Ham United captain arrived in Melbourne on Monday morning, having
followed a special routine to minimise the effects of jet-lag, devised by
the Football Federation of Australia medical staff. The match, which kicks
off at 7.30pm local time, against Qatar is the Socceroos opening 2010 World
Cup qualifier.

Acknowledging before he left that "this is going to be a very tough week for
me", Neill will be straight back on a plane to England after the match to
prepare for Saturday's Premier League visit of Birmingham City. "Physically
it is going to be tough but with the break in matches that follows I know I
will have a chance to recuperate.

"My desire to want to qualify for the World Cup coupled with the FIFA ruling
means it's a game I must attend. However, I realise this is a very important
time for me and the West Ham team as every win is crucial to achieving our
European dream so I wish the timing could have been better.

Closer to home, Matthew Upson is with Fabio Capello's first squad for the
Wembley friendly against Switzerland and George McCartney will hope to be
involved when Bulgaria travel to Belfast. However, the returning Craig
Bellamy and Danny Gabbidon were pulled out of the Wales squad against Norway
in Wrexham.

Freddie Ljungberg has not travelled with Sweden to Turkey either as the
established captain has been rested to give younger players some valuable
experience, and Jonathan Spector is not involved in the US's home friendly
against Mexico.

Tomkins and Sears shine - WHUFC
A solid performance from James Tomkins at U19 level was capped by an assist
while Freddie Sears did well
05.02.2008

James Tomkins helped England Under-19s keep a clean sheet in a high-profile
Under-19 friendly against Croatia on Tuesday night while Freddie Sears came
close to a goal off the bench.

The centre-back, on the verge of his first-team breakthough, was not content
with playing a key rearguard role as he also set up the clinching second
goal for Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark in the second half. Scott Sinclair of
Chelsea had opened the scoring early in the first half. Croatia, as was
expected, proved difficult opposition but the home side were able to hang on
for victory.

Tomkins is a mainstay for England at this level, having already helped them
to qualify for the next stage on the road to this summer's European U19
Championship. Club-mates Sears and unused replacement Junior Stanislas are
also pushing for inclusion when England take on Poland, Serbia and Belarus
on 26, 28 and 31 May for a place in July's finals in Ukraine - while Jordan
Spence, still only 17, has also been capped at this level.

In difficult conditions at Swindon's County Ground, England took the lead in
the 22nd minute when Chelsea attacker Sinclair stepped up to score from the
spot having won the penalty himself. Tomkins then had a scare when his
misplaced pass allowed Croatia a shooting opportunity through Sandi Krizman
but his shot smacked against the post.

Tomkins more than made amends in the 74th minute as he headed Sinclair's
free-kick into the path of Clark, who made no mistake. Substitute Sears,
earning his second cap after his debut last September, could have had a goal
in the closing stages as he raced clear of his markers but was unable to
keep his shot on target. In a lively run-out, Sears had a further
opportunity to score but he could not find the goal his play deserved.

Collison helps Wales to win - WHUFC
Jack Collison made his third international appearance for Wales Under-21s as
they won well in Malta
05.02.2008

Jack Collison has helped Wales to the top of their European Under-21
Championship qualifying group after a 4-0 victory in Malta on Tuesday
afternoon.

Brian Flynn's side had to be patient for the victory that moves the
principality to the top of qualifying Group 10. The deadlock was finally
broken through Manchester City prodigy Ched Evans in the 62nd minute before
three goals in the final ten minutes made sure. First, Simon Church of
Reading doubled the advantage before Middlesbrough's Rhys Williams added the
third. Evans then struck his second in the dying seconds from the penalty
spot to complete a good day's work.

After collecting 12 points from their first five fixtures, the principality
are a point ahead of Romania and France, with a game in hand on the latter
nation. The 19-year-old had already made a significant impact on his U21
debut last November, scoring a stunning solo goal to round out a 4-0 home
victory for Wales against Bosnia-Herzegovina. He followed that up three days
later with a fine display against a strong visiting France team, as Wales
won 4-2.

After the Malta fixture, Wales go to Bosnia-Herzegovina on 26 March before
home and away games against Romania on 20 August and 10 September. Overall,
the ten group winners and four best runners-up will advance to October's
play-offs, with the seven sides coming through that stage progressing to the
final round in Sweden in June 2009.

"It would be great to qualify for the finals. Also, I'm not playing that
regularly at the moment, so these matches will come in handy for me. We
don't have many reserves games and, while I am in and around the squad, I
don't feature every week so the international break will be good for me to
get these games under my belt."

Collison, who made his senior debut for West Ham United as a substitute
against Arsenal on New Year's Day, was yet again with the first team for
Saturday's fixture at Wigan Athletic. "This season has been very good for me
so far. At the start, I got to travel away with the first team, then I made
my international debut and then my debut for West Ham against Arsenal. I
just have to carry on working hard and keep pushing on, to cement a place at
West Ham and in the Welsh squad. Making it to the senior teams on both
accounts is the aim."

Ferdinand feeling good - WHUFC
Anton Ferdinand has more than settled back into the side and is focused on
big things for club and country
05.02.2008

Anton Ferdinand is relishing life at West Ham United and told WHUTV that he
is playing with freedom for "the first time in a long while".

The homegrown centre-back, who turns 23 next month, has been a rock at the
heart of the defence since returning to action in stunning fashion with a
goal in the 2-1 victory at home to Manchester United on 29 December. It is
clear for all to see that the longest serving player at the Boleyn Ground is
focused solely on his football.

"I am enjoying myself," he said. "This is the first time in a long while
where I am playing with nothing over my head and I feel free. I am
concentrating on nothing but football and I think that is showing in my
play." Such has been the nature of his performances, that Ferdinand, who
earned 17 caps as an Under-21 international, admitted he had hoped to figure
in Fabio Capello's initial 30-man England squad.

He added: "I was disappointed but all I can do is play football and play
well for West Ham United. That is what I am going to try and maintain."
Since that United victory, Ferdinand has formed a terrific partnership with
Matthew Upson, who has deservedly received an international call. Neither
could be faulted for Kevin Kilbane's headed winner on Saturday - which the
Wigan Athletic man has admitted was not even an attempt on goal.

Ferdinand said: "It is disappointing not take something from Wigan. I
thought we deserved something. They didn't have many chances, we didn't have
many chances. It was more like a game that should have been a bore draw."
Much was made on Saturday of the conditions at the JJB Stadium and Ferdinand
agreed the surface was not conducive to good football.

"The pitch didn't help us. We like to pass the ball, it didn't help but we
can't use the pitch as an excuse. We have to play on what is given to us. We
were unlucky and should have come away with something. We go out on the
pitch to keep clean sheets. We have been doing well in recent times but it
wasn't meant to be."

With just 22 goals against, a defensive record that is still unrivalled
outside the traditional top-four clubs, there is plenty of reason to be
positive. Added to that impressive statistic, West Ham United know that a
win at home against Birmingham City next Saturday could yet propel them up
to eighth place and potentially leave them within sight of sixth spot.

As illustrated during a difficult game at Wigan, the team will keep on
going. "Whenever we let in a goal it is frustrating and upsetting but, as we
showed, we might let one in but as a back line we don't stop until the end
of the game," Ferdinand added. "We have got to regroup and go into
Saturday's game like we do with every game, expecting to win."

Ladies hit ten at Reading - WHUFC
Hat-tricks from Katie Ling and Lindsay Morgan helped West Ham United to
bounce back in fine style.
05.02.2008

Reading Royals 3-10 West Ham United

West Ham United kept up their charge for a strong finish to the league
season with a resounding 10-3 win at Reading Royals.

The away success left Tony Marshall's side in seventh spot in the 12-team
second tier of women's football but the club are just five points behind
fourth place with eight games remaining. Marshall said: "We have already
beaten last season's points total and I see no reason why we cannot push on
to a top-four finish. The stats do not lie and they prove conclusively just
how far we have come in a short space of time. If we can build on this then
there are definitely exciting times ahead."

In a perfect response to the disappointing but expected FA Cup exit at the
hands of Arsenal, the Hammers goals on Sunday came primarily from Katie Ling
and Lindsay Morgan - who both scored hat tricks, Dani Hoy grabbed two and
the remaining two goals came from Julia Setford and Tracy Duxbury. Defender
Carly Roache made her 100th appearance for the club. West Ham United are
back in knockout action this coming Sunday when they take on Arsenal again,
this time in a rearranged London County Cup fixture at Harlow Town.

Hammers: We'll fight Kia - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 6th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham United have vowed to fight the writ served against the club by Kia
Joorabchian last week. The Iranian businessman lodged a claim last week for
'unpaid' fees relating to Carlos Tevez's time at the club. Joorabchian is
thought to be seeking around £7m in fees and has also stated that he has
documentary evidence to support his claim. However West Ham insist that they
will challenge any such action, with an unnamed spokesman saying:
"We have been aware of this claim from Mr Joorabchian for some time. "In
our view there is no substance to it and, if necessary, we will defend our
position in court."
Joorbachian's legal team are expected to lodge exact details of the claim in
court later today. It is though to consist of two seperate fees; one of
£4.5million pertaining to an agreement with former directors Terry Brown and
Paul Aldridge plus a second seperate claim for around £2.5m based upon a
verbal agreement with former Hammers MD Eggert Magnusson, who has since left
the club. West Ham insist that no such agreement exists. We'll have more for
you on this later today.

Mark Noble gave an assured performance as England's under 21s breezed past
the Republic of Ireland at St. Mary's tonight. The 20-year-old midfielder
helped the young Lions to a 3-0 win over the Irish, with all goals coming in
the second half. James Milner opened the scoring with a deflected effort on
the hour mark before doubling his tally eight minutes later with a crisp 20
yard drive. Arsenal's Theo Walcott completed the rout 12 minutes from time
after a good run on the left culminated with a fine effort from the edge of
the box. Noble - who looked solid throughout - played 86 minutes of the game
before being replaced by Southampton's Andrew Surman. Meanwhile James
Tomkins and Fred Sears helped the England under 19s to a 2-0 win over
Croatia at Swindon's County Ground earlier this evening. Tomkins played a
full 90 minutes whilst Sears came on as a 74th minute substitute for
Manchester United's Febian Brandy. A third Hammer, Junior Stanislas was an
unused substitute. Both goals came from Chelsea's Scott Sinclair, one each
side of the half time whistle. Sinclair's first came from the penalty spot
on 22 minutes, whilst James Tomkins had a hand in his second 16 minutes from
time. Sears almost grabbed a third late on after rounding the Croatian
'keeper but found the angle too tight. Finally Jack Collison was part of the
Wales under 21 side that enjoyed an emphatic 4-0 win in Malta this
afternoon. Briyan Flynn's young charges scores all four goals in the second
half; the win lifts the Welsh to the top of European Championship qualifying
Group 10 with just three games left to play.

Faubert: Trapattoni for West Ham - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 5th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Julien Faubert has claimed in an interview that former Italian manager
Giovanni Trapattoni could be on his way to West Ham United. Trapattoni was
linked with the Hammers' vacant 'Director of Football' role last month,
although that was dismissed at the time as speculation. However Faubert -
speaking in an interview with RMC - claimed that the 68-year-old could
indeed be on his way to East London. "His arrival is possible, it is up in
the air. I don't know if it will happen or not," said Faubert. "I have a
person at the club - he is Italian - who speaks French and helps me with the
translation who told me about [it].
"He [Trapattoni] would be a huge boost for our tactics because we have gaps
in that area of the game, on the defending and positioning aspects."
Faubert also revealed that he was finally settling into life in England
after adjusting to the cultural differences. "Everything is different here
and the league can't be compared to the French one," he said. "They fight
for every ball and the referees don't whistle often. The games are much
quicker - they are not focused on tactics at all - and there is no time to
rest. "You arrive at the stadium an hour before the game, contrary to France
where you are away with the team in a hotel a night before. "It shows you if
you are a professional or not because you are your own boss. It's up to you
to eat well, to drink enough, and to rest to be ready on D-day."

Davenport on recovery - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 5th February 2008
By: Matthew O'Greel

Calum Davenport is looking forward to recovering from the injury which could
have cost him his career. The 25-year-old centre half broke a bone in his
neck just minutes into his Watford (loan) debut last month and is unlikely
to play again for several months while the damage heals. However he revealed
that he was 'thankful' that the damage wasn't even worse. "I'm going to be
alright. It's a long road but I'm going to come through it," he told Sky
Sports. "I'm definitely going to have a different aspect on everything that
I'm doing. "There was a lot of swelling and bleeding around my neck and
obviously I broke a bone. It was quite worrying for me, but thankfully I'm
still walking because some people don't come through it. "It's made me a
better person; even in the last two weeks since it happened I look at things
differently as I was lying there thinking the worst. I'm just thankful that
I'm still going to be able to play football."
The former Spurs defender - who played just half a dozen games for the
Hammers following his £3m move in January 2006 - had moved to Watford with
view to a permanent deal. That switch is now in tatters due to the injury,
although Davenport remains confident that he will be able to pick up his
career once fully recovered - and believes that the key to a speedy recovery
is having the support of those around him. "It's difficult to stay motivated
and to see any light at the end of the tunnel," he added. "But I've got a
good family around me who can pick you back up when you are feeling low."

Curbs denies Parker rumours - SSN
Midfielder set to return in six weeks
Last updated: 5th February 2008

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has rejected reports that Scott Parker could
miss the rest of the season through injury. Parker is currently on the
sidelines after suffering a knee injury in the win over Manchester United in
December. Reports over the weekend suggested Parker could be ruled out for
the remainder of the campaign with the latest injury, but Curbishley insists
the former Newcastle and Charlton man will be back in action in six weeks.
"Contrary to stories this week, Scotty Parker is about a month or six weeks
away," Curbishley told the club's official website. Meanwhile, Bobby Zamora
and Craig Bellamy both scored for The Hammers in a specially-arranged
practice match on Monday. Zamora has been out of action sice August with a
knee injury, while Bellamy is building his fitness after an abdominal
problem. Both forwards scored in the 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers as
they work on regaining full fitness.

Ferdinand focused on football - SSN
Defender is enjoying life at Upton Park
By Chris Burton Last updated: 5th February 2008

Anton Ferdinand admits that he is enjoying life at West Ham and feels that
he is playing better than ever. The defender struggled to hold down a
first-team place at the start of the season, but having made a goal scoring
return during the 2-1 victory over Manchester United in December he has
since formed an impressive partnership with Matthew Upson. Currently the
longest serving player at the club having progressed from the academy ranks,
Ferdinand is now hoping that his recent fine form will allow him to push
into Fabio Capello's England reckoning after the disappointment of missing
out on the Italian's first squad. "I am enjoying myself," he told West Ham's
official website. "This is the first time in a long while where I am playing
with nothing over my head and I feel free. "I am concentrating on nothing
but football and I think that is showing in my play." He added: "I was
disappointed (to miss out on England) but all I can do is play well for West
Ham United. That is what I am going to try and maintain."
Ferdinand has been a key factor behind the Hammers having the best defensive
record outside of the 'big four' and admits that the 1-0 defeat at Wigan on
Saturday came as a huge disappointment to everyone at the club. "It is
disappointing not to take something from Wigan. I thought we deserved
something," he said. "They didn't have many chances, we didn't have many
chances. It was more like a game that should have been a bore draw. "The
pitch didn't help us. We like to pass the ball, it didn't help but we can't
use the pitch as an excuse. We have to play on what is given to us. We were
unlucky and should have come away with something. "We go out on the pitch to
keep clean sheets. We have been doing well in recent times but it wasn't
meant to be."

Calum thankful on injury - SSN
Injured defender grateful to be able to play again
By James Pearson Last updated: 5th February 2008

Calum Davenport is thankful he will be able to play football again after
breaking a bone in his neck on his Watford debut. The defender joined The
Hornets as cover for Danny Shittu, who has been on international duty at the
Africa Cup of Nations. However, disaster struck for the West Ham man after
he broke a bone in his neck after team-mate Darius Henderson landed
awkwardly on him in his debut against Charlton. Davenport believes the
injury is going to make him a better person and that he is just thankful his
football career is not over. "I'm definitely going to have a different
aspect on everything that I'm doing to be honest," he told Sky Sports News.
"I think there was a lot of swelling and bleeding around my neck and
obviously I broke a bone.
"It was quite worrying for me, but thankfully I'm still walking because some
people don't come through it. "I'm going to be alright. It's a long road but
I'm going to come through it. "It's difficult when you're picking up injury
after injury to stay motivated and to see any light at the end of the
tunnel, but I've got a good family around me who can pick you back up when
you are feeling low. "It's made me a better person. Even in the last two
weeks since it happened I look at things differently. I was lying there
thinking the worst. "I'm just thankful that I'm still going to be able to
play football which is something I love."

West Ham in new legal fight over Tevez fees - Telegraph
By David Bond
Last Updated: 2:08am GMT 06/02/2008

West Ham say they are ready to go to court to fight a new legal challenge
from the owners of Carlos Tevez over £7 million in 'unpaid' fees relating to
his one-year spell at Upton Park. Kia Joorabchian, the player's agent and
front man for the two offshore companies which own the Manchester United
striker, filed a writ in the Chancery Division of the High Court last week.
His lawyers are due to lodge a particulars of claim at the court today but,
according to the writ, Joorabchian is seeking an outstanding sum of £4.5
million, plus a further £2.6 million which, he alleges, was due to be paid
to him by West Ham on Jan 31. Joorabchian is understood to be claiming he
has documentary and taped evidence to back up his claims. But West Ham
insist they do not owe the north London businessman any money, adding that
they are prepared to go to court to prove it. "We have been aware of this
claim from Mr Joorabchian for some time," said a spokesman for the club. "In
our view there is no substance to it and, if necessary, we will defend our
position in court."

West Ham say they will not know exactly what Joorabchian is claiming until
he files the particulars with the court. He is not thought to be seeking any
monies on behalf of Tevez. Instead, it is thought the claim relates to loan
fees, insurance for the player and other agents' fees he believes he was
contractually entitled to. The first part of the claim is understood to be
linked to promises made by the club's former chairman, Terry Brown, and
managing director, Paul Aldridge, who negotiated the original loan deal
which took Tevez and Argentine team-mate Javier Mascherano to West Ham in
August 2006.
The second tranche of £2.6 million is understood to relate to a verbal
agreement Joorabchian says he had with Eggert Magnusson - the club's former
chairman and frontman for the Icelandic takeover by billionaire Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson in November 2006.

West Ham maintain no verbal or written agreements exist to back up
Joorabchian's claims. They also believe that any outstanding issues with
Joorabchian or Tevez's owners, Just Sports Inc and Media Sports Investment,
were settled at the time of last August's out-of-court deal which secured
the player's transfer to Manchester United. At that time, in an agreement
designed to placate the Premier League, Just Sport and MSI agreed to pay
West Ham £2 million for the release of Tevez's registration. United agreed
to pay Just Sport and MSI a £5 million loan fee plus £5 million a year to
Tevez in wages. The deal avoided a court battle which could have cost West
Ham £30 million.

A Football Association arbitration panel are due to rule next month on
Sheffield United's claim that West Ham should not have been allowed to
continue playing Tevez after they were found guilty of breaching league
rules on third party ownership last season. A Premier League chairmen's
meeting tomorrow is expected to prohibit the third party ownership of
players.
