Suits you sir - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 21st September 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Dean Ashton has revealed that the England suit he received recently was sent
a year late. Ashton, talking in his column for icons.com, revealed that the
suit should have been sent last year when he was set to receive his first
international cap - although a mix-up at the FA meant it took over a year to
arrive.
"I had to laugh this week when I saw all the stories in the papers about me
being on standby because of the suit I was sent," he said. "That suit was
from when I was in the squad before I got injured. They happened to put my
measurements down to get my suit done before the ankle break, and it has
taken a year to get to me! "The coincidence is that it got sent through at
the same time as Emile Heskey got injured, so people put two and two
together and got five. "I haven't got a clue how the papers knew I'd got it
- I just laughed! I know the truth behind it though, and that's that the
people who made the suit just had the kindness to send it on."
Ashton is set to start against Newcastle at St James Park tomorrow afternoon
with United seeking a SIXTH succesive away win. The Hammers are also the
only club in the Premier League yet to concede a goal away from home this
season - sequences which Ashton intends to help extend. "We're in sixth
place going into the weekend and the mood is a lot lighter around the
place," he said. "When you are winning games things are very rosy and we
have made a good start. "But we want it to continue. We've got Newcastle on
Sunday, up at St James' Park and now that I've had a taste of getting back
into the goals, I want more."

Curbs looking ahead to Newcastle encounter - WHUFC
21/09/2007 10:43

Alan Curbishley is hoping Craig Bellamy will be fit to face his former club
Newcastle United on Sunday. Craig has been suffering with a tight groin in
recent weeks and had to come off in the first half of the Hammers' 3-0 win
over Middlesbrough. "The problem, as we understand it, is that he has been
wearing orthotics in his boot to correct discomfort he's felt in certain
areas," explained Curbs. "It has cleared up the problem he had, but created
another. "We thought it might be a hernia but it's just that the mouldings
have put more pressure on certain parts of his body that before. It's just
something we'll have to work through. "In pre-season he, Scott Parker and
Julien Faubert set the tone for our training. He trains like a Trojan and he
expects everyone else to do the same." Curbs also relayed that Anton
Ferdinand and Danny Gabbidon are back in training and in contention for a
place in the squad after suffering a respective knee injury and illness.

Hammers prepare for return to the Toon - WHUFC
21/09/2007 16:22

Craig Bellamy, Lee Bowyer, Nolberto Solano and Scott Parker will have extra
reason for wanting a place in West Ham United's squad against Newcastle
United at St James' Park on Sunday.

The quartet, along with injured Kieron Dyer, have all swapped black and
white for claret and blue in recent times and would love nothing more than
helping West Ham to take another three points on what has been a tremendous
start to the new campaign. Bellamy, 28, made 93 league appearances for
Newcastle, scoring 27 goals between June 2001 and 2005, while Bowyer struck
six goals in 79 league outings in three seasons from July 2003.

Solano and Parker are both yet to make their West Ham debuts with the former
only arriving just before the transfer window shut and the latter just back
to fitness after a pre-season knee injury. Solano had two spells at
Newcastle, with a total of 230 league appearances, and 37 goals, while
former club captain Parker was involved in 55 fixtures, with four goals,
after moving to the north east in June 2005.

As always in football, familiar faces often return and it will be no
different in the next fixture at the Boleyn Ground on Wednesday night.
Plymouth Argyle will arrive for the Carling Cup third round with former West
Ham right-back Tim Breacker as assistant manager to Ian Holloway. Breacker
made 240 appearances in nine years between 1990 and 1999 and the 42-year-old
is sure to get a warm reception on his return. To get your tickets for

Saints complete Dailly loan deal - BBC

Southampton have signed West Ham defender Christian Dailly on a one-month
loan deal. Dailly, 33, will be eligible to play for Saints in their
Championship game against Barnsley on Saturday. The Scottish international
has been with West Ham since 2001 but has not played for them this season.
"Christian will give us the experience and composure we need at the back
right now," Saints boss George Burley told his club's website. "I am
delighted to bring him to the club for an initial month and we will take it
from there. "Christian is a leader, a good character. He is enthusiastic and
he is versatile. "The injuries to Claus Lundekvam and Darren Powell have
made it difficult to find the right blend in the defensive line so bringing
in Christian will give us a big boost. "I watched him in the reserves
recently and he did well. He is keen to come, he is still fit and still
hungry to play." Dailly began his career with Dundee United before moving to
Derby and Blackburn and he has played a total of 191 games for the Hammers.

The Special One departs - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 21st September 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Christian Dailly has joined Southampton on loan, with view to a permanent
deal. West Ham United have confirmed that Scottish international Dailly has
signed a temporary one-month deal with the Championship side. He passed a
medical with the Saints this morning and is set to make his debut against
Barnsley at St Mary's tomorrow. George Burley moved for the experienced
centre-half after being left short in defence following injuries to Claus
Lundekvam and Darren Powell. "I am delighted to bring Christian to the club
for an initial month, and we will take it from there," Burley told
saintsfc.co.uk. "He will give us just the sort of experience and composure
we need at the back right now. "Christian is a leader, a good character and
enthusiastic. He's played a lot for Scotland and has been at West Ham for
many years. "He's still fit and still hungry to play so bringing him in
will give us a big boost." Dailly, 33, has barely featured in the United
first team since Alan Curbishley took the managerial reigns from Alan Pardew
a year ago. He has slipped further down the pecking order at Upton Park
since due to the arrivals of Matthew Upson, Lucas Neill and Calum Davenport.
Dailly is currently the club's longest serving player, having been a Hammer
since moving to Upton Park in a £1.75m switch from Blackburn (as a
replacement for Leeds-bound Rio Ferdinand) in January 2001.

Newcastle Utd vs West Ham Utd - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 20th September 2007
By: Matthew Coker

Now, this particular game is a test of devotion on a number of different
levels. The 600 mile round trip is one thing to contend with but doing it
for a Sunday lunchtime kick off at the expense of your roast dinner or
causing your pub football team to miss their midfield maestro adds to the
required commitment.

"Newcastle's one of my favourite away trips, cause of edge. It's so bleedin'
far, for one thing, so different."
Fortunes Always Hiding by Irvine Welsh.

Even more so, when you get there, you are confronted with a seat in the
Upper Tier of the Sir John Hall stand, which not only means that you'll be
watching what looks like a game of Subbuteo but also that none of the many
choruses of Bubbles that will get belted out will reach those on the pitch.

Before that though, there is 14 (count 'em) flights of stairs to negotiate,
meaning that several of our non Olympiad members of the chorus struggle to
get going for the first twenty minutes as they spend that time trying to
re-fill their lungs with air. This is one for the truly devoted, though, as
usual, we will arrive in numbers.

A team with NOBs on (board)

We venture up to the North East with a sufficient number of Newcastle Old
Boys to form a Geordie Masters team circa 2017. Even without the injured
Kieron Dyer, we boast Noberto Solano (now safely back from international
duty), Lee Bowyer, Craig Bellamy and possibly Scott Parker and they will be
in for varying degrees of warm welcomes from the supporters of our feeder
team.

We are up against a side who sit in 10th place in the league, having had a
decent start to the season, before something of a wobble at Derby. They had
kicked off with a 3-1 away win at Bolton, before a goalless draw at home
with the Villa, a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough and a win over Wigan at home
(1-0) saw them undefeated in their first four games. The away defeat at
Derby saw that record undone after they lost 1-0 because of a lifeless
performance at Pride Park.

"Make sure you don't lose. That was something Newcastle were guilty of last
season more than anyone."
– Sam Allardyce after the Villa game.

Undefeated had been a very apt description of our opponents as the first
four games had seen them gain points without too much conviction
(discounting the first half at Bolton). The new boss has been trying to
tighten things up starting with a number of defensive buys (Rozenhal,
Enrique, Beye, Capaca) and also with the midfield line up featuring Geremi,
Nicky Butt and Alan Smith.

It should be recognised that Allardyce has taken over a side that has had
the confidence knocked out of it during the latter part of last season. One
measure of how poor they had been was that, prior to Owen's winner over
Wigan, the last goal scored by Newcastle at St James Park was in February
2007. The size of the task facing Big Sam should not be underestimated and
he will need some time before he can be truly judged.

Although the current side is a work in progress to be improved, for all the
faults that I am about to list, it is a side for which answers to many of
the problems are in the squad but not available for action.

Even without Shay Given (having not yet reclaimed his place from Steve
Harper post injury) ,the defensive unit is solid enough, though it is a case
of square pegs in round holes. They feature three central defenders,
including Steven Taylor at right back and a left midfielder as left back.
The reasons for this are slightly unclear, as Allardyce picked up a new
right back, Habib Beye and a new left back, Jose Sanchez Enrique in the
recent transfer window, especially when the idea of trying to put your best
eleven players in the side has failed so many managers in the past.

The biggest weakness appears to be in the midfield where they have as much
flair as Russell's Brand's trousers. They are without Joey Barton, Emre and
Damien Duff, leaving them devoid of artistry and this has been further
diminshed by Charles N'Zogbia being the left winger played in the back four.
James Milner is also being played out of position on the left hand side, so
they are finding it difficult to carve out chances.

Of the central midfielders, Smith seems disappointingly poor value for £6m,
particularly when all he seems to contribute is a succession of questionable
slide tackles. Based on Monday's game, there is more chance of spotting an
upright tackle in the audience at a Jade Goody pole dance than during one of
Smith's games.

Allardyce changes his strategy where the front line is concerned as rather
than choose the line up on the basis of the best players, he sticks
rigourously to a big man / little man combo. The fans feel this is fine if
the duo involves Mark Viduka and Michael Owen, but are highly critical of
the fact that Shola Ameobi gets a run out ahead of the popular but generally
benched, Obafemi Martins.

They are likely to have Owen (and Viduka) available on Sunday and a great
deal of success will depend on our ability to keep the England striker at
bay. Owen is better at getting into space than Dennis Tito and has garnered
a reputation as one shot, one goal that will re-build itself as he gets
games under his belt. Our hope in keeping him out will be boosted by the
usual fitness factors that surround him, the man has spent less time at work
this year than Alan Johnston and he has only completed one full game for his
club side in the current campaign.

Previous Games at St James

Visits to Newcastle have been fairly kind to us in recent years (the 4-0
drubbing in our relegation season being an exception). Although you have to
go back to 1998 for our last victory (a 3-0 win from a Wrighty brace and one
from Sincs), we have shared the points on the last two visits, meaning that
St James Park is no Anfield.

"They're not as upset as we are with West Ham. That is private and
confidential, but if Curbs started it then we are more upset than they are
and that is a fact."
Allardyce's cryptic playground baiting over the Kieron Dyer sale.

I think that our opponents are a team struggling to score at home, who are
lacking creative players and there is a new feel to much of the Newcastle
line up. If we are going to get something, I suspect that we'll have to
defend well and that we'll conceded possession but with Robert Green in such
outstanding form and Newcastle's main channel of attack being high balls
into the box, I believe that we are capable of keeping things tight at the
back.

The quick break football that we played at Reading will be perfect for this
game and I think that with the likes of Matty and Bellamy in the side, we
will get some opportunities to stretch our opposition. I also think that our
confidence will be up on the back of successive 3-0 wins and that that this
is there for the taking.

Obviously much can go wrong and the first goal will be crucial. They will
have no difficulty in defending a lead and an early goal would settle the
nerves of the Toon Army. It may also come down to the strong bench that I
mentioned last week and I'm confident that we have depth in the squad to
help us win the game.

Weighing it all up, I'll go for a 0-2 scoreline, setting us up for a top of
the table clash with the Gooners next week.

Enjoy the game.

Dailly links up with Saints - SSN
Hammers defender joins on month's loan
By Mark Buckingham Last updated: 21st September 2007

George Burley has eased Southampton's defensive difficulties by signing
Christian Dailly on a month's loan. Dailly arrives at St Mary's having
failed to feature in the West Ham United first team so far this season.
Indeed, the experienced Scot has not played for Alan Curbishley's side since
February's 4-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic. He will go into the Southampton
squad for Saturday's Championship game with Barnsley and Burley feels Dailly
will prove a valuable signing. "I am delighted to bring Christian to the
club for an initial month and we will take it from there," Burley told the
club's official website. "He will give us just the sort of experience and
composure we need at the back right now. "Christian is a leader, a good
character, he's enthusiastic. He's played a lot for Scotland and been at
West Ham for many years and he's versatile. "The injuries to Claus Lundekvam
and Darren Powell have made it difficult to find the right blend in the
defensive line, so bringing in Christian will give us a big boost. "I
watched him in the reserves recently and he did well. He is keen to come.
He's still fit and still hungry to play."

Former Magpies return to St James' Park
By Mark Buckingham Last updated: 21st September 2007

It will be an old boys' reunion on Sunday as West Ham United head up to
Newcastle United, live on Sky Sports 1. The Hammers boast five former
Newcastle players on their books, although Kieron Dyer will not figure after
breaking his leg last month. Scott Parker and Nolberto Solano both left St
James' Park in the summer, but have yet to make their debuts for West Ham.
Midfield general Parker has been suffering from a knee injury, but came
through 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek and could figure. Solano is
also hoping for a chance to play, while Lee Bowyer has enjoyed a bright
start to the new season. Another former Magpie - Craig Bellamy - is hoping
to be fit after he was substituted in the first half of last week's 3-0 win
over Middlesbrough. Carlton Cole impressed as his replacement and will hope
to partner Dean Ashton should Bellamy not be fully fit. Henri Camara, signed
on loan from Wigan, is another player keen to make his West Ham debut after
scoring twice for the reserves. Alan Curbishley's side have won their last
four away games in the top flight, but the club have yet to win five in a
row on their travels in the Premier League.
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is confident Michael Owen will be fit to start
at St James' Park following a scan on his groin.

FACT BOX
Prediction: Newcastle 1 West Ham 1
One to watch: Dean Ashton
Sky Bet odds: Newcastle 5/6 Draw 9/4 West Ham 11/4

Owen, who was forced off in the 1-0 defeat at Derby County on Monday, has
been the subject of rumours that he requires a hernia operation. But he
should spearhead the Newcastle attack against The Hammers as Allardyce muses
over who to pick alongside the England ace. Shola Ameobi started at Pride
Park, while Obafemi Martins came off the bench. Mark Viduka is also hoping
to be fit to be in contention. David Rozehnal is optimistic he will be able
to take his place in the centre of defence after suffering a leg injury when
landing awkwardly against Derby. Shay Given was on the bench at Pride Park
and could make his first league appearance of the season by replacing Steve
Harper in goal.

Newcastle United v West Ham
1.30pm, Sunday - Sky Sports 1

That opening day defeat by Manchester City must seem like a long, long time
ago for West Ham fans. Unbeaten since then, key players fit, some
established stars back on song and two impressive wins back-to-back, things
could not be better for Alan Curbishley. He will be delighted as well. We
all know what a rough ride he had last season and even after that City
defeat the knives were being sharpened again. But slowly but surely, West
Ham have improved as the weeks have gone by. Of course, their fans don't
need me to tell them it can all change, but right now everything is looking
pretty good. Having Dean Ashton back - and scoring again - is a massive
boost. Then when Craig Bellamy gets injured Carlton Cole comes in from the
cold and plays a blinder. Add to that Lee Bowyer finally showing signs of
his old form and Matthew Etherington flying down the left, it just goes to
show what a difference a few wins can make.

West Ham have a pretty decent record at St James' Park and I would imagine
that Curbs is heading up there looking for all three points - especially on
the back of Newcastle's last result. I was pretty stunned to see them lose
to Derby because with all due respect to Billy Davies, I have seen his side
twice over the past few weeks and they have been poor. I don't doubt they
improved against Newcastle, but maybe it also shows the size of the task
facing Sam Allardyce up there. He does seem to have tightened them up at the
back a little, but let's face it, that wasn't hard and as Sam will tell you,
there is still plenty of work to be done. Up front he has a problem, which
might be worth keeping an eye on. Michael Owen is supposedly fit this
weekend and supposedly doesn't need an operation and now Shola Ameobi is
fit, all four strikers are pushing for a place. I was surprised to see
Obafemi Martins left on the bench on Monday and he must have been as well.
Last season he was the one they relied on for goals, but now he finds
himself down the pecking order. He has just signed a new contract but I
can't imagine he'll settle for sitting on the bench, particularly in front
of those Geordies.

Le Tiss Predicts

DRAW - West Ham are going well and will fancy their chances, but I just
think that defeat at Derby will wake Newcastle up. Neither side seems to
have a problem scoring, and by the same token, neither side's back four
fills me with any great confidence, so I can see there being plenty of goals
here. I'll go for 2-2.

Matt's Main Man:

MARK VIDUKA (NEWCASTLE) - He seems to have made a subdued start to the
season and Newcastle will be looking for a bit more from the Aussie. He is a
great signing for them and capable of so much more. Maybe he has been
brought in to be a target man for the likes of Owen and Martins, but Viduka
is good enough to that and score goals. It's high time he started.

West Ham United

Craig Bellamy is hoping to be fit to face one of his former clubs on Sunday
after a groin injury forced him off in the first half of last weekends win
over Boro. Should Bellamy not recover in time, Carlton Cole will keep his
place in the side against Newcastle, where he made a rare start and scored a
rare goal last season.

In defence Anton Ferdinand and Danny Gabbidon have both recovered from
injury and illness and Ferdinand should return to the starting line up at
the expense of James Collins.

Ex Newcastle captain Scott Parker came through a reserve game in the week
and is fit to make his debut but is likely to have to settle for a place on
the bench, as is another Toon old boy Nobby Solano and Henry Camara who
scored a brace for the stiffs in midweek.

Likely West Ham Team

Green, Neill, Ferdinand, Upson, McCartney, Bowyer, Noble, Mullins,
Etherington, Bellamy, Ashton. Subs Wright, Gabbidon, Parker, Ljunberg,

Newcastle United

Manager Sam Allardyce is confident Michael Owen will be fit to start and his
selection problem comes down to who will partner him. Shola Ameobi started
the last game alongside Owen but it's likely to be either Obafemi Martins or
fit again Mark Viduka with the later the most likely.

David Rozehnal is likely to be fit after injuring his leg in the defeat by
Derby and Shay Given is set to make his first start of the season in goal,
replacing Steve Harper.

Likely Newcastle Team

Given, Taylor, Cacapa, Rozehnal, N'Zogbia, Smith, Geremi, Butt, Milner,
Owen, Viduka. Subs Harper, Beye, Faye, Ameobi, Martins

Internationals, who needs them? - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 21st September 2007
By: Tony Watson

Another three points in the bag and things appear to be looking brighter at
Upton Park this week.

Dare I say it but injuries appear to be clearing up - with the exception of
the long term casualties (and Bellars). Freddie Ljungberg returned to action
at the weekend, Scott Parker completed a full 90 minutes for the reserves
and Deano is looking sharper and got his first league goal since March 2006.

Forgetting a few defensive errors and looking at the game as a whole, it was
a satisfying display that hopefully we can take into the Toon game this
weekend.

However, not too much has been said on the Bellamy injury, How long is he
out for? Does the injury require surgery? All these questions appear to have
gone unanswered by the club so far this week.

If it does turn out to be an injury that leaves him on the sidelines for a
while - being a Hammers fan it will leave a horrible taste in my mouth. The
main reason for this is because from a West Ham view it was avoidable. The
injury first cropped up just after the Bristol Rovers game, he then
struggled to make the Reading game although in the end he played.

And then the internationals, a week long break to help his groin heal. Or so
it should have been. Instead, he played in the week for Wales against
Slovakia (even though self admittedly he still had a slight niggle in the
groin).

In the game he ran himself into the ground, he was everywhere, chasing every
ball and playing like his life depended on it – all for what? A Wales vs.
Slovakia match that has very little at stake…neither can qualify, it seemed
nuts to risk aggravating the injury and making it worse.

Obviously it's an honour to play for your country and I'm not saying he
shouldn't be performing in his normal committed style but we have
potentially lost our top scorer for God knows how long due to him having to
play in a game that is as good as a friendly. I'm looking at the whole thing
slanted towards West Ham I know, but I can't help it, it just seemed
avoidable!

Moving away from the bitter views towards the internationals, Is it possible
Lee Bowyer of old has returned? Two goals in as many home matches certainly
hint that, he could have had a couple at Reading too, fingers crossed he can
keep this up – his return to form could well end up as significant as the
Dean Ashton return.

Finally, the Wednesday morning papers suggested that the boardroom changes
at Upton Park are connected with overspending. The wages in particular, it
makes sense if you look at it.

Players such as Nigel Quashie, Calum Davenport and Carlton Cole among other
'second string' players must be on £20k plus a week each; add that together
and you can't blame Gudmunsson for thinking some of his money is being
wasted.

Newcastle United v West Ham United
Sunday 23rd September 2007
Kick off 1.30pm
Barclays Premiership
Live on Sky Sports

Tickets News

Newcastle have made an extra 330 tickets available and are on general sale
from the club.

West Ham finally got the home win us fans craved last weekend when we were
flattered by a 3-0 score line of Boro.

But it's away from home we have really looked the part with 3 straight wins
helping us to 6th in the Premier League and we'll be looking to make it 4
out of 4 as the nation settles down for their Sunday lunch.

Fat Sam has rung the changes at Newcastle this summer but they have started
the season in their normal fashion with 2 wins 2 draws and a defeat yielding
8 points and they find themselves in their normal mid-table position.

At homes they drew 0-0 with Villa, before beating Wigan by a goal to nil.
They also knocked Barnsley out of the League Cup at St James Park by way of
a 2-0 win.

Current Form

Newcastle United
Bolton A Won 3-1
Aston Villa H Drew 0-0
Middlesbrough A Drew 2-2
Barnsley H Won 2-0
Wigan H Won 1-0
Derby A Lost 0-1

West Ham United
Man City H Lost 0-2
Birmingham City A Won 1-0
Wigan H Drew 1-1
Bristol Rovers A Won 2-1
Reading A Won 3-0
Middlesbrough H Won 3-0

Newcastle go looking for their 3rd straight home win on the spin.

West Ham go looking for their 6th straight away win but haven't won in their
last 6 trips to St James Park. The last win coming back in 1998/99 when an
Ian Wright brace and a goal from Trevor Sinclair secured a 3-0 victory after
Stuart Pearce saw red early in the 2nd half.

Leading League Scorers

Newcastle – Martins & N'Zogbia 2

West Ham United – Etherington & Bowyer 2

West Ham have won 36 drawn 31 and lost 43 of our 110 league meetings

Biggest Win at St James Park – 3-0 1998/99 & 1978/79

Biggest Defeat at St James Park – 0-4 1986/7 & 2002/3

Last time we met – 20th January 2006

We were robbed by Glenn Roeders Newcastle and the hapless Uriah Rennie.
First –half goals from Carlton Cole on a rare start and Marlon Harewood put
us in the driving seat before right on the stroke of half time, Rennie
allowed Milners effort to stand despite the fact it had gone through Scott
Parkers legs whilst he stood on the 6 yard box bang in front of Roy Carroll
clearly in an offside position.

A Luis Boa-Morte handball in the 2nd half allowed West Ham new boy Nobby
Solano to level the game from the spot.

Newcastle United
Given, Solano, Ramage, Huntington, Carr, Milner, Butt, Parker, O'Brien,
Dyer, Martins

West Ham United
Carroll, Dailly, Ferdinand, Davenport, McCartney, Benayoun, Quashie,
Reo-Coker, Boa Morte, Harewood, Cole

Driving

At the end of the A1(M) continue on the A1 and then the A184 towards
Newcastle. Continue along this road, bearing left onto the A189. Continue
over the River Tyne on the Redheugh Bridge, from which the ground can be
seen. Carry on straight up the dual carriageway. This leads directly to the
ground.

Parking
As the ground is so close to the City centre there are a number of pay and
display car parks in the Area.

Pubs

The ground is right in the centre of the City and close to the main station.
So you will find plenty of pubs and many away fans are to be found in
O'Neill's opposite the main station. Beer is in the ground but not at half
time if memory isn't too hazy.

By Train

Newcastle Central Railway Station is half a mile from the ground, just
follow the crowds. The first train from Kings Cross should get you to
Newcastle in time to make kick off.

Prediction
1-1

A View from St James Park - A Toon Army fans view - West Ham Online
Match Reporter - Thu Sep 20 2007

Many thanks to Michael Martin of the True Faith, Newcastle United fanzine
also at ww.true-faith.co.uk

Out of the ones I have done so far, in my view this is by far the best,
honest, decent replies from a proper football fan.

What do you expect from Newcastle this season?

It's a season of rebuilding after several seasons of gradual decline and
appalling management in the boardroom and in the dugout.

Who do you think will be your star men this season?

If we can keep him fit, Michael Owen will be useful. Mark Viduka is a decent
turn and Joey Barton will deliver when he gets in the groove. I'm already
liking Geremi and amazingly our centre-halves, in particular Rozenhal look
useful as well.

Who do you think should be in your starting 11?

With all the players fit I'd go with; Given, Meye, Rozenhal, Cacapa,
Enrique, Geremi, Barton, N'Zogbia, Milner, Owen, Viduka in a 4-4-2.

How did you rate your performances so far this season?

Patchy. We were great at Bolton, a bit laboured against Villa, sloppy at
Boro, dogged with Wigan at home and piss poor at Derby. We did enough to
beat Barnsley in the League Cup. But overall much improved on last season.

Has Big Sam spent well?

Its early days but he appears to have - he's re-shaped the squad for a net
outlay of £12m and some real wastes of space have been moved on - Bramble,
Luque, Moore and of course one of the most disliked players I've known in 35
years following NUFC - Kieron Dyer - now earning a fortune for nowt with you
boys. For £7m you have been taken to the cleaners. He'll be 29 when he plays
his next game for you and I can't see him playing beyond 31 in honesty and
that might be stretching it. Relieved to have him off our hands for a load
of reasons.

Were you sorry to see Roeder go?

I think we've lost a good head of the NUFC academy but he was never a
manager. He was out of his depth but he's a decent man, a well respected
ex-captain of the club and if he ever brings a team to SJP he'll get a good
reception - he'll definitely not get "tumour boy" abuse thrown at him like
he did last season at West Ham.

Were you sorry to Freddie Shepherd go?

You are joking! The man was a walking, talking embarrassment to Newcastle
United, the city and the club's supporters in my opinion. Sorry to see him
go in the same way I'd be sorry to stop having my head stotted off the back
of the Gallowgate End. In my opinion - a greedy, clueless, embarrassing cunt
of the highest order. He was offered no position whatsoever at the club
despite the bollocks about him being a supporter, yap-yap-yap - his family
and the Halls have taken millions out of the club, absolutely millions.

What do you think of the incoming new owners?

Early days but they've had a promising start. They have secured the debts,
provided reasonable funds for the manager, the chairman has met with
supporters groups, including yours truly, we made a few suggestions and
they've picked them up and implemented them - can't say fairer than that.
They are staying in the shadows apart from the occasional trip by the
Chairman and the owner, Mike Ashley to a few city centre clubs and they have
got the beers in, which is always a popular move. Overall though the only
fit and proper people to run our football clubs is the supporters - I'm
firmly of the opinion all clubs should be run by supporters - works well in
Germany and at Barcelona .

Are you worried the club seems to be on the new market a mere couple of
months after it was taken over?

All nonsense apparently, dreamt up by half-baked journalists - when our
reclusive billionaire owner Ashley turned up at Boro wearing an NUFC shirt
and has been at every game at SJP since dressed similarly that sent a big
message. Everything they are doing would indicate they are in it for the
long haul and the club is doing things now with its development etc it has
never done before. I'm more optimistic about how our club is being run than
I've ever been, though see above.

Are you worried about the club being raided by the Old Bill?

Not at all - Chris Mort the club Chairman has made a public statement that
the raid was likely to show NUFC as being the victims of a crime. There will
be people recently associated with NUFC who have had similar visits from the
City of London Fraud coppers who perhaps have more to be concerned about.
Allegedly.

Are you concerned at all with the stigma that Big Sam is a little dodgy on
his transfer dealings?

This is rich coming from West Ham and Harry Redknapp's former club. Frankly,
I believe 100% in innocent until proven guilty and really don't believe
there is anything of substance in the accusations against him. They are all
innuendo, nods, winks from people who kid on they know more than they do. We
all watched the Panorama documentary and it showed absolutely nothing. I
agree his son shouldn't have been handling anything near Bolton but the same
can be said of Ferguson at Man Utd. Put up or shut up eh?

Have you all withdrawn your saving from Northern Rock yet?

Absolutely not. All kidding aside, Northern Rock is incredibly important to
the economy of the North East region - 7000 people work for them in Tyne &
Wear and if the health of that company is damaged it will be disastrous for
thousands upon thousands of people up here. They are an excellent company -
they gave £175m to good works in the region last year and they sponsor not
only NUFC but Durham CC, The Falcons etc. The media got a few hours of
scare-mongering but they have damaged a NE institution into the bargain with
some salacious reporting and blatant scare-mongering. A pack of cunts.

What's your view on the Carlos Tevez affair?

Not arsed to be honest - he's got a scabby neck and he plays for Man Utd.

How do you think West Ham will do this season?

Not great, not shit. You've spent a lot of money on some dubious players and
I'd question the character of a lot of them. Sir Bobby Robson discovered he
couldn't make a good group from a bunch of twats. Curbishley might discover
something similar.

What West Ham players worry you most?

Bellamy obviously - a smashing little player - doesn't score enough goals
though and he could start a fight in an empty house. I like Dean Ashton as
well. There was talk of him coming to SJP had West Ham been relegated, which
they should have been if football was run properly.

How do you view West Ham fans?

If you'd ask me this question 20 odd years ago you'd have got a very decent
answer to nowadays. I'm part of the generation that experienced the Chicken
Run and the whole experience around the Boleyn Ground. After some loon
hurled a petrol bomb into the away end at SJP in 1980 we were always
afforded a warm welcome in the East End of London and to be fair NE1 wasn't
a great place for Happy Hammers to visit in the same period. Gave our
encounters something of an edge though. All that aside I think there is a
bit of respect - I usually don't rate London clubs for their support but
West Ham, like Millwall seem to draw their support from a distinct
geographical community and that is something we would recognise as important
in the NE where geography and football loyalties are entwined - think
Belfast and the painted kerbstones denoting Republican and Loyalist
neighbourhoods - not quite as bad up here but getting there in parts. I
think West Ham has a following which we'd recognise as "proper". You do need
some new songs though that bubbles shite is wearing a bit and Russell Brand?
Fuck Off.

West Ham seems to be the place to find ex Newcastle players. What are you
opinions of Kieron Dyer, Nobby Solano, Scott Park, Craig Bellamy and Lee
Bowyer?

Dyer - glad to see the back of him.
Solano - a proper footballer, though not exactly the hardest working one and
maybe went a bit native on Tyneside with a developing affection for beer.
Plays a decent trumpet. "Popular Peruvian" (c)
Scott Parker - decent player though not great and struggled with the
responsibility of being captain at a mad club like NUFC. Runs round in
circles a lot.
Craig Bellamy - smashing player. Arsehole.
Lee Bowyer - deeply unpleasant young man. Living off one decent season at
Leeds many years ago. Not missed.

What are you favourite flavour crisps (site joke)?

I'd climb a mountain for Tudor obviously. Smiths Bovril is the king of
crisps, though back in the day KP Beefy ran them close.

Predication?

Expect the unexpected.

Curbs: Bellamy similar to Di Canio -Sporting Life
by Joseph Caron Dawe, 21 September 2007

Alan Curbishley has compared Craig Bellamy to former West Ham legend Paolo
Di Canio after the Wales international impressed his boss with his early
application at the club. The Hammers' manager signed the 28-year-old from
Liverpool for £7.5 million during the summer, a move which many considered a
huge gamble due to the player's chequered history. However Curbishley has
been more than happy with the dedication shown by the forward, who is
desperate to be fit in time to face former club Newcastle United on Sunday,
and has been moved to compare Bellamy to Di Canio whom he managed at
Charlton. "It is probably better for him when he's a big fish in a smaller
pond," said Curbishley of Bellamy. "He had a terrific time at Blackburn but
maybe he got lost in the rotation system at Liverpool. "I told him and
Kieron Dyer when they joined that it was about time they were remembered for
being international footballers. And having worked with him now, he reminds
me of Di Canio. "The only thing that upsets them is professionalism and
they expect everyone to train to the same standard. You have to drag him off
the training pitch and it was the same with Paolo."

Nobby Brings 'Little Toon' To Tyneside - newcastleutd-mad.co.uk
By Nu Mad Friday 21st September 2007

With West Ham looking very much like the side Graeme Souness had a couple of
years ago, it is hardly surprising Geordies are calling the Hammers 'Little
Newcastle'! Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy won't make it, but Scott Parker,
Lee Bowyer and Nobby Solano will. Solano insists there will be no split
loyalties if he makes his West Ham debut against former club Newcastle this
weekend. The 32-year-old had two spells at St James' Park before moving
south on transfer-deadline day, although he is yet to make an appearance for
his new club. Solano: "I am looking forward to going back to Newcastle, if I
have the opportunity to play. "I will be professional because I am a West
Ham United player now. Hopefully our good form can continue because the team
is trying to finish well. "It's going to be strange. If I am in the squad it
will be my first game with the team and it will be against my old team. "I
have to take it in a professional way and I have nothing whatsoever against
Newcastle. I have a fantastic relationship with the fans, a great
relationship with the people there.
"Football is like that, you never know when that will happen. I'm a West Ham
United player and I'm looking forward to doing my best here."

Peruvian could make debut against former club
By Lewis Rutledge Last updated: 21st September 2007

Nolberto Solano is relishing the prospect of making his West Ham debut
against former club Newcastle. The Peruvian midfielder has spent eight of
the last nine years at St James' Park, but ended his association with the
club by completing a move to West Ham on transfer deadline day. He has yet
to make his debut for The Hammers but is hoping to feature on his return to
the North East this Sunday. "I am looking forward to going back to
Newcastle, if I have the opportunity to play," he said. Solano admits it
will feel different not to have the support of the Toon Army, but insists
there will be no problem performing against his former club. He explained:
"It's going to be strange. If I am in the squad it will be my first game
with the team and it will be against my old team.
"I will be professional because I am a West Ham United player now. Hopefully

Magnusson: no drama - KUMB
Filed: Friday, 21st September 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Eggert Magnusson has spoken to reassure supporters in the wake of the club's
announcement regarding his future earlier this week. The Hammers confirmed
on Tuesday that Magnusson would be relinquishing his executive role at the
club in order to concentrate on other projects, such as the proposed stadium
move. Some feared that the announcement hinted at Magnusson's eventual
departure from the club - not so, according to the man himself. "There is no
drama in this. We are strengthening the foundation of the club," he told
Icelandic daily Morgunbladid. "I just needed time to breath. A lot has been
going on and taking up my time but now I can focus on taking West Ham into
the future. "I never intended to run the club this way, being a managing
director and chairman. But things turned out that way when I took over from
Terry Brown, as I had to respond to a surprising situation when Paul
Aldridge left. He had been managing director for 10 years. "A lot has been
going on this year but we decided this was the right time for a change. We
have been sailing in troubled waters of late."
Magnusson also revealed that the Carlos Tevez affair had 'taken its toll',
but confirmed that he would continue to follow the team around the country,
as before. "First and foremost I am a football fan - and I will follow the
team wherever it goes despite these changes," he added. "Our next game is
against Newcastle and I will of course be there with the supporters. It's a
massive game for us because not many teams come away with a good result from
there."
And with regards to his new role, he added: "We are set to relocate to a new
ground. It's clear that the Olympic Stadium is not for us but we have
several other options. "After having had discussions with Ken Livingston we
are now focusing on a area near the proposed Olympic Stadium. I think the
new West Ham Stadium will fair well there and would be part of a commercial
and housing area. "There is a lot to do - but there is a real optimism at
the club."

Parker nears Hammers bow - SSN
Midfielder plays 90 minutes for reserves
By Mark Buckingham Last updated: 20th September 2007

Scott Parker could make his West Ham United debut against former club
Newcastle United on Sunday. The midfielder has yet to play a competitive
game for The Hammers since his £7million switch from The Magpies in the
summer. He has been sidelined with a knee injury, but played 90 minutes for
the reserves against Portsmouth in midweek. Reserve-team coach Kevin Keen
confirmed Parker came through the game without suffering a setback. "There
was a boost in that Scotty Parker played the full 90 minutes and came
through okay," Keen told the club's official website. Parker may now be
involved in manager Alan Curbishley's plans for the Premier League trip to
Newcastle on Sunday. Henri Camara could also feature against The Magpies
after he scored twice in the reserves' win over Portsmouth.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Parker is ready for big debut
Sep 19 2007 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

SCOTT PARKER has staked his claim to be in the West Ham side for Sunday's
game with his former club Newcastle United at St James' Park. The England
international has yet to make a senior appearance for the Hammers since his
£7m switch from United to Upton Park because of a bad knee injury. But
Parker came through the full 90 minutes of West Ham's reserve victory over
Colchester last night, and unless he has an adverse reaction, he will be in
Alan Curbishley's squad when it leaves East London on Saturday lunchtime.
However, while Parker will at least be on the bench at St James' on Sunday,
it's a case of wait and see for Nobby Solano. Solano did not make the West
Ham 16 for Saturday's comfortable 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough at Upton
Park after returning to the international fold with Peru. But with Parker
champing at the bit and another former United midfielder, Lee Bowyer, having
scored in two of West Ham's last three Premier League games, it is unlikely
that Nobby will get the nod from Curbishley. Craig Bellamy limped off on
Saturday with a groin injury, but the word from East London is that the
former United striker will be fit to play.
And there is no reason to doubt that Bellamy, who is in such great form for
both West Ham, and Wales at the moment will want to be out there on Sunday.
Bellamy knows that he will receive some stick, but perhaps not as much as
the injured Kieron Dyer could have expected. West Ham handed over £13m to
United for Dyer and Parker in the close season, and all they have had back
is two starts by the former before he broke his leg in the Carling Cup tie
at Bristol Rovers on September 1. That was the last time Steven Taylor's
England Under-21 central defensive partner Anton Ferdinand played for the
Hammers, but he is also likely to be fit for Sunday.

It's no jolk for high-flyer Eggert - Daily mail
Last updated at 12:16pm on 20th September 2007

Eggert Magnusson's high profile has been talked about as one reason for the
loss of his executive status at West Ham. Insiders say chairman Egg was
getting too much credit as the figurehead of a club in which he is only a
five per cent shareholder. Judging by the advert for airline (above right),
Iceland Air, from Saturday's programme, it's not difficult to see how the
club's true powerbroker Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson may have come to that
conclusion. Meanwhile, Lee Bowyer is risking domestic strife follow an

down, what one item would you save?" Bowyer: "It would have to be the

Tottenham fan Jim Sturman QC admits developing a soft spot for West Ham
after helping them avoid relegation over the Carlos Tevez affair. But that
same spirit of goodwill does not extend to Tevez's new club, Manchester
United. Sturman and his son, Jonathan, once bumped into members of the
United squad at a Philadelphia hotel on a pre-season trip. The football
barrister told West Ham fanzine Ex: "We were in a lift with Alan Smith, a
couple of other players and Sir Alex Ferguson. Alan Smith remarked that he
was a United player, to which my five-year-old responded: 'Manchester United

Parker: Set to face MagpiesParker in line for Hammers debut - TeamTalk

West Ham have confirmed that Scott Parker is in line to make his Hammers
debut against his former employers Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. The
midfielder has yet to play a competitive game for the Hammers since his
£7million switch from St James' Park in the summer. Parker has been
sidelined with a knee injury, but played 90 minutes for the reserves against
Portsmouth in midweek. Reserve-team coach Kevin Keen confirmed Parker came
through the game without suffering a setback "There was a boost in that

the club's official site. He added: "There was some good midfield play, we
were strong in defence and it was great to see Henri (Camara) come in and
score two good goals on his home debut. "The attitude of the senior boys
last night was just exceptional. You don't get that at every football club,
but we have this here and for me that's another sign the Club is going in
the right direction. "This attitude helps the younger boys, who are also
showing more of the promise they have and it all contributed to the win."

Camara hopes to click for Irons - TeamTalk

Henri Camara hopes the goals will flow in West Ham's first team after he
marked his reserve debut with a brace in a 2-1 win over Portsmouth. The
Senegal striker showed great poise and technique to grab both goals in the
success over Pompey and said he was delighted to be able to play for his new
club at last.
"I was very pleased just to play, as I joined the club and then had to go
away with Senegal which meant that I have not had much time to meet with
everyone and be considered for games," he told the club's official site. "To
play in this match was important and very good for me and to get two goals
made it even better."
Camara's double strike came in the second half as West Ham showed a strong
foothold in the game against an experienced Pompey side. "There were some
good crosses coming into the box and I just tried to get on the end of
them," he said. "I was very happy to see the goals go in, it was my first
match and I hope to carry on and score more."
The former Wigan and Wolves forward is settling in well and is currently
finding himself a London base to call home. "I like London a lot already and
West Ham is a big club that I was only too happy to join. We have a lot of
good players and I am looking forward to playing with all of them and
helping the club have a good season."

19/09/2007 16:17

Henri Camara is as pleased as punch over the two goals he scored for the
reserves against Portsmouth in what was his first match since joining West
Ham United. The Senegal striker showed great poise and technique to grab
both goals in the 2-1 win over Portsmouth and said he was delighted to be
able to play for his new club at last. "I was very pleased just to play, as
I joined the club and then had to go away with Senegal which meant that I
have not had much time to meet with everyone and be considered for games,"
he said. "To play in this match was important and very good for me and to
get two goals made it even better."
Henri's double strike came in the second half as West Ham showed a strong
foothold in the game against an experienced Pompey side.

Keen pleased with win - WHUFC
19/09/2007 14:22

Kevin Keen was delighted to see his reserve side pick up the first win of
the season and praised the excellent attitude of both senior and youth
players. After watching the Hammers win 2-1 against Portsmouth at Upton Park
on Tuesday night, Kevin said the victory was just rewards for what have been
solid performances from the start of the campaign. "I was more than pleased
with the way we played and won the game. It was an excellent match, a good
game of football," he said. "They had a very strong side out, but so did we.
It was played very competitively and I don't think there was much in the
game, if any, that I was upset about." He added: "There was some good
midfield play, we were strong in defence and it was great to see Henri come
in and score two good goals on his home debut. "There was also another boost
in that Scotty Parker played the full 90 minutes and came through ok."
While first team regulars led the way, Kevin also had much praise for West
Ham's younger players such as Kyel Reid, Jack Collison and Tony Stokes, who
are all making their mark in the reserves. "The attitude of the senior boys
last night was just exceptional. You don't get that at every football club,
but we have this here and for me that's another sign the Club is going in
the right direction. "This attitude helps the younger boys, who are also
showing more of the promise they have and it all contributed to the win. I
still consider Kyel one of our younger players but he is starting to produce
and have a real effect on games now. "I had asked him to step up a level and
he is doing that. I think Jack (Collison) had one of his best ever games and
Stokesy works hard in midfield and keep's everyone going."
After a loss and a draw, Kevin said he was confident results would come
through sheer hard work. "All results have been fair reflections on our
performances and it was a case of just striving to get better in each match
and get a win under our belts."

Camara ready to shine - SSN
On-loan striker bags brace on reserves debut
By Robin Hackett Last updated: 19th September 2007

Henri Camara has signalled his intention to continue to hit the back of the
net for West Ham after marking his debut for the reserves with two goals.
Camara moved to Upton Park on a season-long loan from Wigan at the end of
last month, but has yet to make a senior appearance for The Hammers due to
international commitments with Senegal. However, he was finally able to pull
on a West Ham shirt this week when he scored both his side's goals in the
2-1 reserves victory over Portsmouth. "I was very pleased just to play, as I
joined the club and then had to go away with Senegal which meant that I have
not had much time to meet with everyone and be considered for games," he
told the club's official website. "To play in this match was important and
very good for me and to get two goals made it even better. "I was very happy
to see the goals go in, it was my first match and I hope to carry on and
score more."
Camara feels he is already settling in well to life at the club. "I like
London a lot already and West Ham is a big club that I was only too happy to
join. We have a lot of good players and I am looking forward to playing with
all of them and helping the club have a good season."

Hammers boosted by comeback kids - teamTalk

West Ham received a welcome boost after midfielder Scott Parker completed 90
minutes of the reserves' 2-1 win over Portsmouth. Recent loan signing Henri
Camara netted both goals to stake a claim for a first-team place against
Newcastle this weekend. Striker Bobby Zamora could also return from a knee
problem to bolster manager Alan Curbishley's attacking options following the
loss of Craig Bellamy, who has suffered a groin injury.

West Ham: can Curbs improve his poor cup record? - Squarefootball
Alex Wolstenholme

West Ham United face a third round League Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle at
Upton Park next week and will be strongly fancied to reach the last 16 of
the competition after an encouraging start to the season stepped up a gear
with Saturday's win over Middlesbrough. Manager Alan Curbishley performed an
admirable task in establishing Charlton Athletic as Premiership regulars
during his time at the Valley but it often came at the expense of some poor
cup results. During the period from 2000/01 (Charlton's first season back in
the top-flight after relegation in 1998/99) and 2005/06, the Addicks only
reached one quarter-final in either of the major cup competitions, losing to
Middlesbrough after a replay in the last eight of the FA Cup during
Curbishley's final season in charge. Defeats by Walsall and Gillingham in
the FA Cup and Oxford in the League Cup also occured during this spell.
Safety in the top division was evidently Charlton's first priority but will
Curbs manage to improve on his record now he is at West Ham?
He certainly has the players at his disposal to make an impact in one-off
games and should be able to field a strong side next week despite the club's
injury problems. The all-powerful Premiership has forced managers such as
Curbishley to see finishing in mid-table as an even bigger achievement than
winning a cup competition but to the fans it those unforgettable days at
Wembley, in Cardiff or in Europe that often live longest in the memory and
it is the big cup games that attract the big away followings and the
old-style atmosphere at grounds. As a club the Hammers are renowned for
some of the great players to have graced the Upton Park pitch but also for
their exploits in cup competitions and at Wembley itself. Three times FA
Cup winners and participants in the first Wembley final, they also won the
old European Cup Winners' Cup at the national stadium in 1965. Having
reached the League Cup final twice without lifting the trophy, perhaps the
first final back at Wembley could be on the cards for Curbishley's side?
Icelandic owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson has recently been keen to point his
knowledge of the club's history, saying: 'I am aware of the greatest moments
in the club's history over the last 40 years. "I know how it's said that
West Ham won the World Cup for England in 1966 because of the goals from
Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst, and the immense contribution from Bobby
Moore. "And I have also met Billy Bonds, who was captain when the club won
the FA Cup."
Gudmundsson wants to see Champions League football at Upton Park (or the new
Upton Park if built) but a cup success at Wembley would certainly satisfy
him and chairman Eggert Magnusson for now.

Camara hands selection dilemma to Hammers - Daily Mail
Last updated at 18:16pm on 19th September 2007

Henri Camara fired a reminder to boss Alan Curbishley after scoring twice in
his first appearance in a West Ham shirt. The Senegal striker made up for
lost time by grabbing both goals in the Hammers' reserves 2-1 win over
Portsmouth. "I was very pleased just to play, as I joined the club and then
had to go away with Senegal which meant that I have not had much time to
meet with everyone and be considered for games," he said. "To play in this
match was important and very good for me and to get two goals made it even
better." With the injury to Bellamy probably ruling him out for the journey
to Newcastle, an in-form striker with Camara's pace might be just what the
doctor ordered for Mr Curbishley.

I don't know what instructions Glenn Roeder gave to the players before they
tackled Birmingham City in the FA Cup on Wednesday, or prior to this match
against West Ham, but the players certainly didn't respond. On both
occasions they came out of the tunnel looking like rabbits caught in the
headlights of a car. Rather than going for the juggular, they started on the
back foot and took the first half to come to terms with whatever formation
they were supposedly given to undertake.
West Ham, who hadn't won away all season, terrorised the Toon back-line from
the first second and goals from Carlton Cole and Marlon Harewood inside 22
disastrous minutes was the very least they deserved. First Cole was allowed
to appear unmarked to fire home the opener on 18 minutes after the similarly
unoccupied Calum Davenport had headed back Luis Boa Morte's corner. But the
Magpies did not learn their lesson and fell further behind four minutes
later when Ramage allowed himself to be turned by Harewood with the minimum
of fuss to collect George McCartney's pass and stab a shot past the helpless
Given.
Peter Ramage limped off with a hamstring injury and David Edgar joined
fellow 19-year-old Paul Huntington at the heart of a defence which looked
sadly unusual, to say the least. Right winger Nobby Solano was at
right-back; and right-back Stephen Carr was out on the left, with two kids
trying to hold it all together.
But, after Nicky Butt had seen a goal-bound header turned away by Carroll,
Newcastle grabbed an injury-time lifeline when James Milner's shot sped past
the keeper and into the bottom corner ... through the legs of Scott Parker.
It was obviously offside, but no Toon fan argued the case, but Carroll and
Anton Ferdinand were both booked for their protests.
Whatever Roeder said prior to the match, he must have said the opposite at
half-time as Newcastle took up the challenge and pegged the Hammers back.
And they were back on level terms within eight minutes when Boa Morte
needlessly blocked Milner's free-kick with his arm and Solano, who waved
away Martins offers, sent Carroll the wrong way.

Davenport saw a 65th-minute header ruled out for pushing, then Given's
departure through injury gave Steve Harper a chance of first team glory.
Martins saw a 72nd-minute header come back off the post but Matthew
Etherington passed up a glorious opportunity to win it on 76 minutes when
Harper did well to take him out wide and snuff out the threat.

Both keepers were in action again in the dying seconds, Carroll turning away
another Martins piledriver and Harper denying Harewood at point-blank range.

I, like many Toon fans, was shocked when last year Freddy Shepherd appointed
Graeme Souness as manager. And since that very day I still feel the Jock is
not the man to take us to glory.

But having sat through 90 minutes of nothingness at St James' Park watching
his toothless one-striker wonders let 10-man West Ham off the hook after
defender Paul Konchesky was controversially sent off ... I genuinely feel
sorry for the man.

Along with 50,000 Toon fans, Souness knows this side is crying out for a
striker to ease the burden on Alan Shearer, but he is banging his head
against a brick wall trying to bring one (or two) to this club.

He made his shopping list, and has seen Shepherd rip it up chunting to
himself "too much money", "too much money", etc.

Packing your midfield with five players ... at home ... and hoping your
veteran attacker (who admits himself lost his famous burst of speed six
years ago through injury) will win the day ... is banking on HOPE not good
management.

West Ham insisted today club chairman Eggert Magnusson had not been pushed
aside as a result of changes at boardroom level. Magnusson is to step down
as executive chairman but is to stay on in a non-executive capacity as a new
management team is brought in to support the club's owner, Icelandic
businessman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. "The fans will still see Eggert in the
directors' box and he will remain as non-executive chairman," said club
spokesman Mike Lee, who could become a board member under the new plans. "It
was felt, though, that the club needed a new corporate structure to take it
on to the next level." Manager Alan Curbishley and his staff are not
affected by the changes. "I am so proud of what we have achieved," said
Gudmundsson. "We can be confident about the future." Meanwhile, Michael Owen
is set to face West Ham at St James' Park on Sunday after a groin injury

West Ham owner benefits from Usmanov's Arsenal push
tribalfooball.com - September 19, 2007

An unexpected beneficiary of Alisher Usmanov's decision to increase his
stake in Arsenal to 21% is the billionaire Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the West
Ham owner whose bank Landsbanki acted as broker for Usmanov's investment
vehicle, Red & White Holdings, reports the Guardian. Gudmundsson, who owns
more than 90% of West Ham, became chairman of what was previously Iceland's
national bank in the 1990s, and its London subsidiary is understood to have
brokered Usmanov's purchase of an additional 6% of the club's stock for more
than £30m. The role played by Landsbanki has prompted speculation that
Gudmundsson was instrumental in introducing Usmanov to David Dein, whose
14.6% stake gave the Uzbek his initial foothold in the club.

Youths maintain unbeaten run - WHUFC
18/09/2007 09:18

Coventry U18s 0
West Ham United U18s 2

West Ham United's Under-18's kept up their unbeaten run with a solid 2-0 win
away at Coventry at the weekend. Tony Carr's young team scored twice in the
first half to secure their second league victory of the season. Hammers were
dominant from the start and 20 minutes in, had taken the lead against their
hosts. Good movement down the right-hand side saw Jordan Spence, Junior
Stanislas and Freddie Sears involved with the ball being cut across the box
for Jack Jeffrey to net his first goal of the campaign. Just 10 minutes
later, West Ham increased their foothold on the game by grabbing a second.
The goal was similar to the first in that there was more good movement and
passing, before Sears finished well from 10 yards out. In the second half,
Hammers were once again strong, Stanislas went close with an effort and
despite a few long-range efforts from Coventry, it was West Ham who saw out
the match to go home with all the points. Youth Academy Director Carr was
full of praise for his side and said they could have won by a lot more. " A
great win, but quite simply we should have scored a few more goals. We saw
out the game without really hitting the heights of the first half, but it
was good enough on the day. "It was a good performance and sitting on the
coach at 7.30am on Saturday morning to travel there, we would have settled
for that result, so all in all, a good day."
The youth team has now won two games and drawn one, putting a little run
together and have recovered well from the two defeats suffered in the
opening games of the season. "We were unlucky to lose those first two games
narrowly, but each week we have progressed and have now scored nine goals in
three games. "We had been conceding a bit as well, so Saturday's win over
Coventry was made even better as we got a clean sheet to show for our
efforts as well," said Tony. "The boys are doing well. Jordan Spence has
returned from the World Youth Cup finals very fit and sharp and Freddie
Sears is hitting the net on a regular basis once again. "In fact, Freddie
wasn't shy in reminding me this morning that he has now scored four goals in
three games! "But the boys want to keep improving and they have a great
attitude. With the first team winning on Saturday as well, the training
ground on Monday morning was a very happy place to be!"

West Ham United: Street, Spence (O'Neill, 55), Fitzgerald, Fry, Ashman,
N'Gala, Harvey, Stanislas, Kearns, Sears, Jeffrey.

West Ham United Offical Statement - WHUFC
18/09/2007 15:38

West Ham United today announced that the Board has agreed to strengthen the
management of the Club with some changes to the roles of the senior team.
The Board has decided that in order to move to the next stage of the Club's
development a broader management team will be put in place to support the
Club's owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. With growing confidence and optimism
surrounding the Club's future and with significant progress being made in
delivering a new stadium, the Board feels it is the right time to strengthen
a management structure which will help secure the long term ambitions of the
Club. Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the Club's owner, will continue to chair the
Club's holding Board and this body will direct the overall strategy of the
Club as well as developments such as the new stadium. Eggert Magnusson will
remain as chairman of the Club in a non-executive capacity with an executive
team responsible for day to day operations. Obviously these changes have no
impact on the playing side where Alan Curbishley and his coaching staff
remain in control of all squad and on the field matters. Commenting on the
changes Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson said: "I am so proud of what we have achieved
since becoming involved with the Club and I am grateful for Eggert
Magnusson's contribution to West Ham throughout this time. Of course there
have been challenges but we have made real progress and can be confident
about the future. "It is now vital for our longer term ambitions to become
one of the leading clubs in England playing for honours both at home and in
Europe that we strengthen the senior team at the Club and build a truly
professional management structure for the future."
Eggert Magnusson said: "We have worked hard to create stability and optimism
sometimes in very difficult and trying circumstances. I think it is now
important to broaden the management team so that we can deliver the bright
future that is opening up for the Club. I have enjoyed my time as Executive
Chairman but feel the moment is right to stand back a little as we move into
a new and exciting period."

Gudmundsson said: "It is vital we strengthen the senior team and build a

non-executive chairman and keep his West Ham stake. He said: "We have worked

Changes afoot - KUMB

West Ham United have announced sweeping changes at boardroom level. The club
confirmed this afternoon that Eggert Magnusson - whilst remaining as
Chairman - would be moving to a non-executive role overseeing a team (yet to
be confirmed) tasked with the day to day running of the club. Scott Duxbury
- who was heavily involved in the Tevez affair - is rumoured to be set to
replace Magnusson.
The statement read: "The Board has agreed to strengthen the management of
the Club with some changes to the roles of the senior team. "The Board has
decided that in order to move to the next stage of the Club's development a
broader management team will be put in place to support owner Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson. "Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson will continue to chair the Club's
holding Board and this body will direct the overall strategy of the Club as
well as developments such as the new stadium."
Meanwhile Magnusson told mbl.is tonight that it was always his intention to
step aside. "When we took over at the club last year it was never my
intention of running the club on a daily basis, 24 hours a day," he said.
"I however did this to begin with as it developed that way. A lot has
happened over the last few months but we think this is the right time to
make these changes. "In fact, I needed some time to breath. It has been
very busy but now I can concentrate on other things regarding the future
vision of the club."
At the top of the club's agenda would appear to be a move to a new stadium -
on which 'significant progress' has been made, according to the statement.
The existing Parcelforce site by West Ham station is currently pencilled in
as United's new home.

Former Hammer Tomas Repka is in hot water after lashing out at a cameraman
following a Czech league game. The current Sparta Prague captain had just
been sent off in the league fixture against Teplice deep into injury time
for abusing an official, before he sent the startled TV man sprawling. He is
likely to be heavily fined by the Czech FA. Repka - no stranger to
controversy - was also fined £4,000 by his club, whose defeat in the game
was their first reversal of the current campaign. Repka spent five years at
West Ham between 2001-06, playing almost 200 league games for the club. He
arrived in East London as an international outcast following a falling out
with the Czech manager, and further enhanced his reputation by receiving his
marching orders in his first game for United. Despite managing to knuckle
down for the latter part of his Hammers career his reputation continued to
proceed him - unfairly perhaps at times.

Ex-Hammer fined after attacking cameraman

Former West Ham star Tomas Repka is in the news back in Czech Republic after
lashing out at a cameraman upon being sent off during a league game. The
Sparta Prague captain, no stranger to seeing red during an oft robust
career, was shown his marching orders as his club lost for the first time
this season against Teplice on Sunday. Upon leaving the field Repka aimed an
impromptu attack in the direction of a Czech television cameraman; in an
incident which has culminated in him being fined 150,000 koruna (£3,800) by
his club. Repka in his defence has claimed he was 'under great stress' but
whether his pleas will be treated charitably by the Czech football
disciplinary commission remains subject to conjecture. In what was a
somewhat tempestuous contest Sparta midfielder Martin Abraham was also red
carded, and subsequently fined, for verbally abusing the referee and his
assistant.

Magnusson to step down as West Ham's executive chairman
Last updated: 18th September 2007

West Ham United have confirmed Eggert Magnusson is to step down from his
role as executive chairman. Magnusson, who has been the main figurehead
under the regime of Hammers' Icelandic owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, will
remain at Upton Park as the club's non-executive chairman. Although
Gudmundsson is to take a more hands-on role in the running of the club, he
has also outlined plans to appoint an executive team to handle day-to-day
affairs.
Gudmundsson has reassured manager Alan Curbishley that the restructuring
will have no impact on on-the-field affairs, while at the same time paying
tribute to what Magnusson achieved in his tenure as executive chairman. "I
am so proud of what we have achieved since becoming involved with the club

Gudmundsson will remain chairman of the board of West Ham United Holding,

Magnusson steps down as West Ham chairman -Soccernet

LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Billionaire Icelandic owner Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson is to tighten his control of West Ham, the English Premier
League club said on Tuesday as the club's executive chairman Eggert
Magnusson stepped down. 'Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the club's owner, will
continue to chair the club's holding board and this body will direct the
overall strategy of the club,' West Ham said on its website. The London club
said Magnusson would move to a back seat role as non-executive chairman.
Former UEFA executive committee member Magnusson has been a figurehead at
West Ham since he came in as part the Icelandic consortium which took over
last November. I have enjoyed my time as Executive Chairman but feel the
moment is right to stand back a little,' Magnusson said. Gudmundsson,
chairman of Icelandic bank Landsbanki, bankrolled the 85 million pounds
($169.5 million) buyout of the club but has since kept a low profile. 'We
have worked hard to create stability and optimism sometimes in very
difficult and trying circumstances. I think it is now important to broaden
the management team,' he said. 'It is now vital for our longer term
ambitions to become one of the leading clubs in England playing for honours
both at home and in Europe that we strengthen the senior team at the club

sixth in Premier League after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

at Upton Park. Gudmundsson is to appoint an executive team to handle the
day-to-day running of the club, but Magnusson, who will remain as the
non-executive chairman, will continue to be heavily involved and will keep
his stake in the club. The shake-up is intended to take West Ham to the next
stage of their plan to break into the top four in the Premier League, which
includes moving to a new stadium.

Hammers smash Egg - The Sun
By IAN McGARRY
September 19, 2007

EGGERT MAGNUSSON was elbowed sideways yesterday as West Ham grew
increasingly concerned about his power base — and spiralling players' wages.

The Hammers chairman lost his executive status — and his six-figure salary —
in a shock boardroom shake up. The move came after West Ham spent a fortune
offering players such as Craig Bellamy, Lucas Neill and Scott Parker wages
topping £60,000 a week. There was also increasing alarm at the way Magnusson
has been projected as the man in control, even though he only owns five per
cent of the club. An insider said: "It wasn't really Eggert's fault, but
everyone seemed to think he ruled the club and there was no one else in the
background."
Owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson will now be more hands-on and take specific
interest in building a new 60,000-seater ground near to West Ham tube
station.
That has moved a step nearer after club sources confirmed Hammers have been
granted exclusive negotiating rights to buy land for the £250million
stadium.
Gudmundsson said: "It is vital for our longer term ambitions that we build a
truly professional management structure. Magnusson said: "I have enjoyed my
time as executive chairman but feel the moment is right to stand back a
little as we move into a new and exciting period." Meanwhile, Bellamy will
miss Saturday's trip to former club Newcastle — but the striker has been
told he does not need surgery after a scan on his injured groin.

Nugent strike isn't enough for reserves - www.portsmouth.co.uk
David Nugent was Pompey reserves' scorer at West Ham

David Nugent netted and Linvoy Primus got another game under his belt - but
Pompey reserves went down 2-1 at West Ham. Primus was included in a strong
Pompey reserve side that, with 85 minutes played and more than matching an
equally senior West Ham second-string, looked well worth a point at Upton
Park. But then calamity struck in the heart of the Blues defence as a poor
pass from Martin Cranie put Primus in difficulty and former Saint Henri
Camara was able to first win the ball and then the match with a strike that
gave trialist keeper Anton Silva no chance of saving.
Not for the first time this season, fortune failed to shine on Pompey as
efforts from Franck Songo'o and David Nugent came back into play off the
base of a post with Hammers keeper Richard Wright a mere spectator. Had they
counted the result may just have gone the way of coach Paul Groves side,
particularly if a fierce drive from Matt Ritchie had found the back of the
net - likewise a Marc Wilson header from a pin-point cross from the busy
David Nugent. Although still not making more of the chances that come his
way, Nugent nevertheless showed his predatory skills on 78 minutes when he
tucked in an equaliser after a rocket from Pedro Mendes was pushed out by
Wright. To their credit, Pompey's defence looked reasonably sound for the
first hour, apart from a couple of scares that trialist Italian keeper Anton
Silva dealt with, saving at point blank range to deny both Camara and Luis
Boa Morte.
With so many senior players on view, the match attracted the attention of
numerous scouts from both Premiership and Championship club. And among them
were the Pompey contingent of Harry Redknapp, Joe Jordan and Tony Adams, all
having made the journey to have a first hand view of the senior players that
could be involved in the forthcoming first-team squad for the trip to
Blackburn Rovers and Burnley. And while the main contenders did well, so too
did young Wilson who appears to have become a far better player as a result
of his loan spell at AFC Bournemouth last season. Next in the table of merit
was surely Cranie, who, apart from his lack of concentration that gifted
West Ham their winner, still did enough to be worth a place on the flight
north. It wasn't often that the impressive Camara got the better of Cranie
and Primus but it's goals that win matches and he had duly obliged on the
hour to put West Ham ahead, turning in a cross from Kyle Reid who had raced
clear along the line. When his second goal hit the back of Silva's net late
on, Pompey's hopes of putting their first points on the board from three
starts were gone - and must hope to turn things in their favour when Aston
Villa visit in a fortnight.

Gudmundsson's helping hand
Paul Kelso
Wednesday September 19, 2007
The Guardian

An unexpected beneficiary of Alisher Usmanov's decision to increase his
stake in Arsenal to 21% is the billionaire Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the West
Ham owner whose bank Landsbanki acted as broker for Usmanov's investment
vehicle, Red & White Holdings.
Gudmundsson, who owns more than 90% of West Ham, became chairman of what was
previously Iceland's national bank in the 1990s, and its London subsidiary
is understood to have brokered Usmanov's purchase of an additional 6% of the
club's stock for more than £30m.

The role played by Landsbanki has prompted speculation that Gudmundsson was
instrumental in introducing Usmanov to David Dein, whose 14.6% stake gave
the Uzbek his initial foothold in the club. Gudmundsson, who said he is to
take a more hands-on role at West Ham, spent several years in Russia after
being charged with fraud in Iceland. He founded the Bravo brewery in Russia,
later selling it to Heineken for $400m.
In a restructuring of the West Ham executive announced yesterday Gudmundsson
is to take a greater interest in the day-to-day running of the club with
Eggert Magnusson taking a step back, though he will remain as non-executive
chairman. Gudmundsson's aide, Thor Kristjansson, becomes vice-chairman of
West Ham United Holding and executive vice-chairman of the football club.
Scott Duxbury remains as chief executive and Mike Lee, former communications
chief of London 2012, may be offered a directorship having advised Magnusson
on PR strategy for the past year.

Billionaire takes control at Hammers - news.co.au
September 19, 2007 12:00am

BILLIONAIRE Icelandic owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is to tighten his control
of West Ham United and play a bigger part in running the club. The London
Premier League club said today executive chairman Eggert Magnusson had
stepped down and would move to a back seat role as non-executive chairman.
"Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the club's owner, will continue to chair the club's
holding board and this body will direct the overall strategy of the club,''
West Ham said on its website. Gudmundsson, chairman of Icelandic bank
Landsbanki, bankrolled the $204 million buy-out of the club but has since
kept a low profile.
"We have worked hard to create stability and optimism sometimes in very
difficult and trying circumstances. I think it is now important to broaden
the management team,'' he said. "It is now vital for our longer term
ambitions to become one of the leading clubs in England, playing for honours
both at home and in Europe that we strengthen the senior team at the club
and build a truly professional management structure.'' West Ham are
currently sixth in Premier League after narrowly avoiding relegation last
season.

Eggert Has His Own Throat Cut At West Ham - West Ham Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 18 September, 2007 - 18:47.

Eggert Magnusson Famous for his "if those in control don't perform they may
experience having their throats cut in order for the good of the club"
statement which immediately preceded the sacking of Alan Pardew, West Ham
chairman Eggert Magnusson has had his own throat metaphorically cut. In an
official club statement owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson said: "I am so proud of
what we have achieved since becoming involved with the Club and I am
grateful for Eggert Magnusson's contribution to West Ham throughout this
time. Of course there have been challenges but we have made real progress

future that is opening up for the Club. I have enjoyed my time as Executive
Chairman but feel the moment is right to stand back a little as we move into
a new and exciting period. Well, what is this all about? Has Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson decided that his pal of some thirty years is not up to the job
or has he decided that the stress of running such a demanding club could
have a detrimental effect on the health on his healthy but ageing pal?
Eggert Magnusson is not a young man and perhaps Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson has
decided that a younger person, possibly his son who is wealthier than his
father would be the right person to take the club forward. One thing that is
for sure, our recent request to do an article with Mr Magnusson was not
treated with the usual courtesy afforded to fan's sites from Hammer's press
department, the timing was obviously wrong. Is this a brave new dawn or the
destruction of the first visibly cohesive boardroom unit seen at the Boleyn
for many a year? - Ed

Hammers announce boardroom shake-up - Setanta Sport
by Tom Adams, 18 September 2007

West Ham have announced that Eggert Magnusson will step down as the club's
executive chairman, but the Icelandic supremo will continue to play a key
role at Upton Park in a shake-up of the club's management structure. The
Hammers have instigated the changes in order to 'move to the next stage of
the club's development', and the adjustments will see owner Bjorgolfur
Gudmundsson's holding board take on more responsibility for the direction of
the club. Magnusson – the public face of West Ham's powerbrokers ever since
their takeover at the end of 2006 – will take a step back with an executive
team brought in to oversee day-to-day operations at Upton Park. However,
the man who had to deal with the Carlos Tevez controversy last season will
keep his stake in the club and continue to be involved in the development of
the London side. "We have worked hard to create stability and optimism

This is good news for all concerned, although sending a Three Lions jacket

it's not tempting fate and and that the 23-year-old Ashton can remain

I'm in the best form of my life, boasts West Ham midfielder - Daily Mail
Last updated at 14:15pm on 18th September 2007

Lee Bowyer believes he is back to his best as a goalscoring midfielder after
scoring his second of the season to spark West Ham's 3-0 win over
Middlesbrough.
Prior to his late equaliser against Wigan last month the former Charlton,
Leeds and Newcastle player had not managed to score in 35 matches for the
Hammers. Striker Dean Ashton's first goal since the 2005 FA Cup final after
recovering from a broken ankle may have grabbed the headlines but Bowyer,
30, is convinced he can now contribute more to the Upton Park cause. He
said: "I am getting a lot more chances now. Balls are getting laid in front
of me as I am making runs and I wasn't really getting that kind of service
last year. "I was making runs but no one was really seeing them. I had one
chance against Middlesbrough and I took it and it turned the game for us.
"It is a great feeling to be scoring again as it is a big part of my game. I
am pleased for Deano as well, as that has been a long time coming for him.
"Hopefully that will inject a bit confidence into him and he can start
scoring more goals as well."
West Ham are up to sixth in the Premier League after a hesitant start to the
season but Bowyer has reminded his team-mates there is still a long way to
go.
They face his former club Newcastle next Sunday at St James's Park and he
warned: "Although we have a very strong squad now - and with the likes of
Freddie Ljungberg and Scotty Parker still coming back from injuries - it
will be a tough game up there next week. "Sam Allardyce has made his mark on
the team. They will be hard to break down and have great support up there
and it can be quite intimidating for the visiting team."

Are Finnan, Hleb, McCartney and Young-Pyo Lee the Premier League's most
underrated players? - Sportigo
Tue, Sep 18, 07 11:55
Ralph Little

The super strikers and the guys who score spectacular goals get all the
headlines. But Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Spurs have lesser lights who
deserve to be recognised just as much as the big-shots.

'McCartney's appearances in the Hammers back four have helped his side to
eight clean sheets in the last dozen league games' Everyone thrills and
marvels over the twists and turns of Cristiano Ronaldo, more so now that he
doesn't seem to fling himself to the floor at any given opportunity. The
crowd love the sight of yet another master class in long-range strikes and
accurate passing from Steven Gerrard; even the masterful defending of Micah
Richards is getting armchair fans all a fluster. But what about the unsung
heroes of the game?

It's a question I've been thinking about whilst reading the latest
plaudit-ridden article about the joys of Cesc Fabregas. Don't get me wrong
the Arsenal midfielder deserves all the praise he gets but there are 11
players on the pitch and it seems most teams have an unsung hero. You know,
the hard-working guy who, because of his unfashionable positioning or
perceived lack of talent, doesn't get everyone's attention like the stars
who perform spectacular acts..

Steve Finnan is just that kind of player. A long-time servant to the Anfield
cause and a player who has almost certainly never been the focus of a
back-page tabloid story or broadsheet expose. The quietly-spoken Republic of
Ireland international, now 31, has been virtually ever-present throughout
Rafa Benitez's rotation obsession but is rarely talked about outside
Merseyside.

I guess full-back is not the most glamorous position in the world but there
are others in that position in the Premier League who get far more attention
than the Limerick man. I am at a loss as to why he doesn't get the accolades
he deserves.

Aliaksandr Hleb, although relatively new to the Premier League, is in danger
of becoming a similarly non-newsworthy player. I simply love to watch the
Arsenal midfielder play - he seems to move effortlessly around the pitch,
seldom losing the ball and more importantly never simply looking for the
obvious easy pass. Also, given his slight stature, he very rarely gets
pushed off the ball and, refreshingly, he hardly ever goes to ground when
under physical pressure.

George McCartney and Young-Pyo Lee also fall under the banner of players who
seem to attract little or no attention whilst playing for West Ham and Spurs
respectively. As with Finnan, both are defenders and players at the back are
always going to find it harder to get among the man-of-the-match awards
ahead of those who score last-minute winners or curling 25 yard free-kicks.

McCartney has made himself indispensable at Upton Park, where he is far more
central to Alan Curbishley's plans then he was under Alan Pardew. His
measured performances can be most easily be summed up in the stat that his
appearances in the Hammers back four have helped his side to eight clean
sheets in the last dozen league games.

Young-Pyo Lee is back in Martin Jol's good books. The 30-year-old South
Korean is beginning to recapture the form he showed in his first season at
the club back in 2005-06. Of course, with things not going too well for
Tottenham as a whole, not many players at White Hart Lane are generating
anything other than bad press. But I think Lee's form and that of the side
as a whole could be on the up and the former PSV left-back could help them
get back on track.

I am sure there are many other unsung heroes other than those mentioned. In
fact, every fan will point out that such-and-such is a far better player
than the man who gets interviewed post-match and has his face on the cover
of the magazines. Who is your team's underrated genius?

So How Much Is Mullins Worth To West Ham Now - West Ham Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 18 September, 2007 - 10:10.

While the plaudits for Hammers recent surge up the Premiership table have
been directed towards fit again England International hopeful Dean Ashton
and to the resurgent Lee Bowyer and Mathew Eherington, the man who has been
pulling the strings in midfield has almost crept under the radar. Hayden
Mullins was destined to join up with his mentor Alan Pardew at Charlton
during the transfer window and was supposedly going to be used as a make
weight in the aborted deal to bring Darren Bent to the Boleyn, unglamorous
and workman like he has made the midfield 'destroyer' role his own. Things
could have been so different had it not been for Hammers appalling injury
list, but now he is in the starting line up on a regular basis he will be
very hard to dislodge, not everyone's cup of tea but his OPTA stats show
that he is one of the club's most notable performers thus far.
Having seen off Javier Mascherano last season he now looks likely to keep
Scotty Parker on the bench, at least in the short term, how much would
Mullins be worth in the transfer market on his current form? As we have
mentioned before Alan Curbishley will have some difficult decisions to make
shortly, Bowyer and Mullins have stepped up to the mark and it will take all
of the manager's tact and skill to keep everyone happy and to maintain the
club's upward curve... These are good times to be a Hammer, and long may
they last! - Ed

Curbishley tells West Ham fans to get real over player form
tribalfooball.com - September 18, 2007

Alan Curbishley has told West Ham United fans to stop their criticism of his
over-worked players. In his column for the Daily Express, Curbishley wrote:
"Do supporters fully understand this when they complain about some players'
performances? "Fans get frustrated when, from the comfort of their armchair,
they see players not performing as they would like them to. "Footballers get
criticised when saying they are tired and the public say, 'Let me do your
job, I'd love to train for just two hours a day and play on a Saturday'.
"But no sooner do we get a Premier League weekend out the way than it is the
start of the Champions League. "Let's look at what has happened so far.
Since the Premier League kick-off on August 11, we have had a round of the
Carling Cup, two internationals and the Champions League and now the UEFA
Cup. "Some players have been playing throughout the summer. Mark Noble, my
20-year-old midfielder, had a strenuous run-in last season, played in the
Under-21 European Championship and has been full-on since with club games
and international qualifying. "Is it a wonder we have a lot of injuries and
that players are lethargic and weary already? It is not just physical
pressure but mental pressure too at being asked to perform at the highest
level in every game."
He also said: "And what if you are a Wigan supporter? Your main
centre-forward, who excelled playing for his country last week, is now out
for a couple of months. Was Emile Heskey's broken foot due to wear and tear,
excess fatigue or mental tiredness? "Fans want to see performances, but
where on earth does anybody get any time to train and improve things?"

wake of Northern Ireland's 2-1 defeat by Iceland. Their winner in the last
minute came from his own goal. In a statement the IFA said: "Issues
surrounding the incidents which occurred involving certain players within
the Northern Ireland squad during the trip to Iceland have now been
addressed and resolved. "The IFA wishes to apologise to any members of the
public who were affected in any way by the behaviour of these players."
IFA president Raymond Kennedy added: "The IFA has been shown up in a poor
light as a result of behaviour, which of course is unacceptable. "While the
public apology from Keith Gillespie goes some way towards a recognition of
that, the players concerned have been told quite categorically that such
behaviour has caused unnecessary embarrassment to the IFA in the eyes of the
football world and the public as a whole and will not be tolerated in
future." The money from the fines will be allocated to a charity of the
IFA's choice.
