NOTTINGHAM FOREST v WEST HAM UNITED
npower CHAMPIONSHIP
SUNDAY 28 AUGUST 2011
KICK-OFF: 1.15PM
FULL AUDIO AND TEXT COMMENTARY - WEST HAM TV

Introduction
• West Ham United go to Nottingham Forest looking to make it three
successive away wins for the first time since April/August 2007.
• The Hammers have fared less well at home this season, losing to Cardiff
City and Aldershot either side of a 2-2 draw with Leeds last Sunday.
• The tie pits two of the country's leading English managers Sam Allardyce
and Steve McClaren against each other. The pair faced each other most
memorably in the 2004 League Cup final when McClaren's Middlesbrough beat
Allardyce's Bolton Wanderers 2-1 to lift the trophy.
• Forest are on a three-match unbeaten run and have not lost at the City
Ground this season - drawing their first two league matches and defeating
Notts County 3-2 in the Carling Cup first round.
• While West Ham have been eliminated from the Carling Cup with Wednesday's
first-round defeat by Aldershot Town, Forest are looking forward to the
third round after winning 4-1 at Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday.
• Robert Green made his 200th appearance in goal for the club against Leeds
on Sunday. He was one of nine changes made by Allardyce for the midweek
match with Aldershot - only Winston Reid and captain Kevin Nolan retained
their places.
• West Ham United's most-recent victory at the City Ground came in the shape
of a 2-0 Division One win on 28 December 2003, when former Forest striker
Marlon Harewood and Jermain Defoe were on target. That result also matched
West Ham's biggest-ever success at Forest - also achieved in 1996/97,
1935/36 and 1924/25.
• Nottingham Forest have twice recorded 5-0 home wins over West Ham United -
in a League Cup second-round tie on 30 August 1977 and in a Division One
fixture on 9 October 1965.
• West Ham United's Under-18s travelled to the City Ground for an FA Youth
Cup third-round tie on 3 December 2008, losing 3-1. Ahmed Abdulla scored
West Ham's goal.

Previous meeting
• Although the clubs have not been in the same division since the 2004/05
campaign, the teams met at the Boleyn Ground last season in the FA Cup
fourth round.

• The Hammers won 3-2, with a hat-trick from Victor Obinna cancelling out
first-half strikes by Dele Adebola and David McGoldrick. The lineups were:
West Ham United: Green, Reid, Gabbidon, Ilunga, Jacobsen, Barrera (Hines
89), Kovac, Noble (Boa Morte 74), Sears, Piquionne (Nouble 87)
Subs not used: Boffin, Tomkins, Bridge, Parker

Nottingham Forest: Camp, Chambers, Morgan, Gunter, Lynch, McGugan, Cohen,
McKenna (McCleary 78), Majewski (Tyson 68), Adebola (Earnshaw 66)
Subs not used: Smith, Moloney, Moussi, Rodney

Team news
West Ham United
• Sam Allardyce is expected to make wholesale changes to the lineup that
started the midweek Carling Cup defeat by Aldershot Town. The manager could
recall Robert Green, Joey O'Brien, James Tomkins, Mark, Noble, Scott Parker,
Jack Collison and Carlton Cole.
• Allardyce is still set to be without Abdoulaye Faye (groin) and it is not
thought the centre-back will return until after the international break.
• Peter Kurucz (knee) and Gary O'Neil (ankle) are both definitely out with
long-term injuries.
• New recruits George McCartney and John Carew are pushing hard for their
first league starts. Jordan Brown has been back in light training after his
ankle injury in pre-season.
• Pablo Barrera and Jordan Spence are on season-long loans at Real Zaragoza
and Bristol City respectively. Olly Lee and Cristian Montano are on
month-long loans at Dagenham & Redbridge and Notts County respectively.
Nottingham Forest
• Nottingham Forest have been boosted by the return to contention of French
midfielder Guy Moussi, after he came through a midweek reserve match.
• Striker Matt Derbyshire played under Sam Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers for
a short period before being loaned and later sold to Greek club Olympiakos.
• Midfielder Andy Reid was part of a Blackpool reserve side beaten 4-2 by
West Ham United's second string at Bloomfield Road in March 2011.
• Striker Joe Garner played under Neil McDonald when the Hammers assistant
manager was in charge at Carlisle United. After being plucked from Blackburn
Rovers reserves, Garner was sold to Nottingham Forest for £1.14m in summer
2008.
• Forward Ishmael made his full debut in senior football for Manchester City
in a 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United on 23 September 2006.
• Long-serving defender Wes Morgan is the sole survivor from the clubs'
previous meeting in the league at the Boleyn Ground on Boxing Day 2004. West
Ham United won that Championship fixture 3-2.

Hammers bag Baldock
WHUFC.com
West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of striker Sam Baldock
from MK Dons
26.08.2011

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of coveted striker Sam
Baldock. The in-form 22-year-old has moved to the Boleyn Ground from League
One leaders MK Dons on a four-year contract with an option for an additional
year. The Hammers beat several clubs to the signing, paying an undisclosed
fee for the forward after his spectacular start to the 2011/12 season.
Baldock, who passed a medical on Friday afternoon before putting pen to
paper in the evening, has netted six goals in six appearances, including a
hat-trick in a 6-2 victory over Chesterfield and the second in a 4-0 Carling
Cup second-round victory over Premier League Norwich City in midweek. He
will wear the No7 shirt for the Hammers and is set to make his debut at home
to Portsmouth on Saturday 10 September.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham TV, he said: "I am pleased to be here. I am
just excited to be coming to such a great club, caked in so much history. I
just want to hit the ground running. "It is a massive club, isn't it? You
just have to turn up at the stadium and your head is looking up straight
away. The area, the fans are so passionate. I want to show what I can do for
them and hopefully everyone will be proud of me."

Born in Bedford, Baldock joined MK Dons as a trainee in July 2004, making
his debut as a 16-year-old in a Football League Trophy tie against
Colchester United on 20 December 2005. Quick and sharp with an eye for goal,
the young forward established himself in the Dons' first team during the
2007/08 season, appearing in the Football League Trophy final victory over
Grimsby Town at Wembley in March 2008 and helping the club to win the League
Two title. The following season, 2008/09 began with a first senior goal as
MK Dons knocked Norwich out of the League Cup and ended with a call-up to
England's squad for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup finals in Egypt. There, he
appeared in the group-stage fixtures against Ghana and Uzbekistan. Baldock's
stock continued to rise in 2009/10 as he bagged ten goals in 28 appearances
in all competitions, followed by another 14 in 34 games last season,
including a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory at Colchester on 12 March 2011. The
striker's goals helped MK Dons reach the League One Play-Offs last term but,
despite another goal from Baldock, they were eliminated by Peterborough
United in the semi-finals. The young frontman has played against West Ham
previously, turning out in MK Dons' 2-0 pre-season defeat by the Hammers at
stadium:mk on 28 July 2010.
Baldock becomes the club's seventh summer signing, although Allardyce has
hinted at more new arrivals before the transfer window closes on Wednesday
night. whufc.com will have all the news first and fastest when official.

Big Sam on Sam

The manager could not hide his delight at clinching the signature of
highly-rated forward Sam Baldock.
26.08.2011

Sam Allardyce has hailed the arrival of Sam Baldock at West Ham United. The
manager was pleased to finally get his man on Friday night, having kept tabs
on Baldock's sensational form for MK Dons. Allardyce knows Dons manager Karl
Robinson well from their time together at Blackburn Rovers and was well
aware of the 22-year-old forward's prowess. Baldock then scored a hat-trick
in front of Allardyce against Chesterfield last Saturday, before again
impressing the watching manager with another goal away to Norwich City on
Tuesday. That prompted the Hammers to swing into action, with the club
winning out against several clubs for the England U20 forward's signature.
"We are very excited and very pleased to acquire such a young and talented
goal-scorer," Allardyce said. "They are few and far between today and
hopefully he can settle in quickly and produce the sort of form and goals
that he has done for MK Dons. "I saw him score a hat-trick and then an
outstanding goal on Tuesday against Norwich. We haven't got this type of
player at the club at the moment. It is a great addition to the team and
gives us another dimension and an opportunity to play a different way. "I am
sure he will go a long way and hopefully it will be an exciting time to help
get West Ham where we want them to go. If he can continue his development,
we have got what we have been looking for. A prolific goalscorer. "While we
have got some very good players on the front line, he is a sharp, he is very
quick and his main strength lies in the quality of runs he makes in the box
and the quality of his finishing. He seems to sniff a goal out at any angle
and from anywhere."

Allardyce admitted the new recruit could provide stiff competition for the
likes of Carlton Cole, John Carew and Frederic Piquionne. "I see him as a
starter because we have invested a considerable amount of money. "It gives
us lots of options and hopefully lots and lots of goals. Now we have to
provide those chances for the strikers we have. What we would be looking at
now is to strengthen in other areas. If we can find the right player to
improve the first team then we will try and do a little bit more business
before the window shuts."

The manager paid tribute to Baldock's attitude and professionalism, and said
the club had acquired a model professional on and off the pitch who should
adapt quickly. "He is young so he may need some settling in time but I hope
not. "He doesn't live too far away and of course as in terms of a young man,
he has got a very nice manner and a very good stature. Not only have we got
a good footballer but a good human being. His mum and dad should take great
credit in the way they have brought their son up."

Big Sam on Friday
WHUFC.com
The Hammers will be going all out to make it a third straight win on the
road this weekend.
26.08.2011

Sam Allardyce faced the media on Friday afternoon as he looked forward to
the prospect of meeting Steve McClaren in Sunday's showdown with Nottingham
Forest.
The Hammers manager said the match would be the ideal opportunity for the
club to put the midweek Carling Cup disappointment behind them. A third
straight away win would ensure the team remain on course in the promotion
push. Meanwhile, whufc.com will be the place to be for all the official
transfer news first and fastest when confirmed - including exclusive
interviews with those concerned. You made nine changes in midweek so I guess
you are not worried about a hangover from the defeat by Aldershot Town?

SA: I shall be worried about it the next time we play at home against
Portsmouth. I don't think we will be too worried about Forest in terms of
our mental capabilities because we played very well at Doncaster and were
absolutely outstanding at Watford. So we will take that attitude into this
away game and hopefully we can peak to the level we did in those games. It
will be a difficult game and one where we want to get some points out of
because we slipped up in the last minute against Leeds.
We have to try and push for three points if we can. It is a difficult task
at any stage to win an away game but to ask a team to win three away games
on the trot when you have only won three in two years would be a miracle if
we can pull it off. If we hit the form we showed against Watford again we
will cause Forest problems and hopefully convert chances into goals.

The club haven't put three wins away from home together in the league since
April/August 2007. It would be some feat?

SA: It would be an achievement at any level to win three away games on the
trot. It would be a fantastic start. The unfortunate thing is we haven't
married up the home results with the away results and points. We have been
very close and thrown points away at home while we have gained exactly what
we deserve away from home - six points.

Have you identified a reason behind the home form?

SA: There is a reason and that has been explained to the players and without
going into great detail regarding that, I think I have pointed the finger at
what the problem is and I've tried to eradicate the problem. For now it is
on the backburner because we have an away game at Forest and we will work on
this situation after the international break. Hopefully everyone comes back
OK and we can try and get the win against Portsmouth [on 10 September].

Are you looking forward to renewing your rivalry with Steve McClaren?

SA: It is like everything else. You come to a new football club and you have
to have time to get to know everybody and time to impose your style and your
winning mentality. Steve has as big a winning mentality as I have. He has
proved that over the years he had been in the game and stayed in the game.
I am sure with his fantastic experience in Holland and Germany that he will
bring great things to Nottingham Forest. We can't really be judged until the
end of the first season that is when the real turnarounds happen. You can
say you've turned a club around quicker than that but really 12 months is
the minimum. While you are progressing the thing is to make sure you get
results however you can.

If you do beat Forest, will you be happy with the points tally going into
the break?

SA: Yes, because we will be spot on in terms of automatic promotion and that
is ten points out of five games. That is two points a game. Very few teams
who get two points a game don't automatically get promoted.

Carew gets Norway call
WHUFC.com
John Carew is in Norway's squad for two vital 2012 UEFA European
Championship qualifiers
26.08.2011

John Carew has been included in Norway's squad for the country's vital 2012
UEFA European Championship qualifying matches against Scandinavian rivals
Iceland and Denmark. The Norwegians are level on points with Group H leaders
Portugal and Denmark with three qualifying matches remaining - two of which
will take place in early September. Should Norway finish top of Group H,
they would qualify for their first UEFA European Championship finals since
2000, when Carew was part of the squad that defeated Spain but were
eliminated at the group-stage. A second-place finish should see Egil Olsen's
side go into a Play-Off. Norway take on Iceland in Oslo on Friday 2
September bsefore making the short trip to Copenhagen to take on the Danes
on Tuesday 6 September and the striker has told manager Egil Olsen he is fit
and ready to play. Carew, who made his West Ham United debut as a substitute
against Leeds United before starting the Carling Cup meeting with Aldershot
Town, is eager to earn his 88th and 89th senior caps. "I will be going away
with Norway so I could get a couple more games there. I spoke to the
national team manager last week and I'll speak to him again this week. "When
I go away with Norway, it will be good for my match-fitness."

While he has not played a great deal of competitive football in recent
months, national-team manager Olsen knows Carew's vast experience could
prove important against Iceland and Denmark. "We have taken him because of
what he has achieved before, and his expertise," said Olsen on naming his
squad on 22 August. "We have had a close dialogue with John, and he will
hopefully play more games before we get together. "Had he not had a club, I
would not have picked him. What is positive is that he is getting playing
time there [at West Ham]. It is a good sign that he has played so early
after joining them."

Youngsters set for Sunderland
WHUFC.com
The in-form Under-18s travel to face the Black Cats in the FA Premier
Academy League this weekend
26.08.2011

West Ham United Under-18s have a long weekend away to look forward to as
they seek to continue their perfect start to the 2011/12 FA Premier Academy
League season. The Hammers defeated Sheffield United 4-1 in their opening
fixture at Little Heath on 20 August, with first-year scholars Elliot Lee
and Kieran Sadlier bagging a hat-trick and goal respectively. This weekend,
West Ham's youngsters will travel to Sunderland for their second inter-group
fixture hoping to make it two wins from two to start the new campaign.
Academy Director Tony Carr, Under-18s coach Nick Haycock and the squad will
travel to the North East on Friday afternoon, staying overnight ahead of
Saturday's 11am kick-off. Carr is hoping Lee (pictured) can continue a run
of form that has seen him score hat-tricks in his last two league outings -
the 16-year-old also netted three times in West Ham's final game of last
season at Chelsea. "Elliot is a goal-scorer," he confirmed. "He has scored
seven or eight goals in pre-season and scored a hat-trick against Sheffield
United in our first league game. "He is what he is, which is an excellent
player. He's not ready for first-team level at this point. He's got to learn
his trade at in the youth team and the development squad, get better and
learn to become a better all-round player like all young players. "One thing
he will never lose is that knack of the art of scoring goals. If he keeps
doing that, then the future looks bright for him." Sunderland themselves
also began their season with a success as Jordan Laidler's penalty earned
the Black Cats a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace. West Ham are in Group A -
one of four FA Premier Academy League divisions of ten teams each.
Sunderland are in Group D. Each club plays the nine other teams in their own
group home and away, plus ten inter-group matches, completing a season of 28
league matches.

Leo leads England to victory

Leo Chambers captained England Under-17s to a 1-0 win over Italy on Thursday
evening
26.08.2011

West Ham United youngster Leo Chambers captained England Under-17s to
victory over Italy on Thursday evening. The Hammers defender, who has also
skippered the Young Lions at Under-16 level, produced a typically strong and
assured display at Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium. The fixture was the
first of a four-team Friendly Tournament that also features Czech Republic
and Portugal. England stole victory with just two minutes remaining when
Manchester City striker Devante Cole - the son of former Manchester United
and England forward Andrew Cole - netted past Italian goalkeeper Luca
Lezzerini. Earlier, Chambers himself had come close to opening the scoring
following a marauding run from the back. It was a very good victory," said
the south London-born player, who only turned 16 on 5 August.
"We had to really dig in and we did score late, but it was a good team
effort. We did start slowly but we gradually got into it and as a team, we
bonded and then scored late on."

England's second match in the competition sees them take on Czech Republic
at Bishop's Stortford FC's Woodside Park on Friday evening, with kick-off at
7pm. The tournament concludes when England face Portugal at Northampton
Town's Sixfields Stadium on Sunday, kick-off 2pm.
All three matches will serve as preparation for England's UEFA European
Under-17 Championship Group 6 qualifying matches against Latvia, Bosnia &
Herzegovina and Netherlands at the end of October.

West Ham United winger Pablo Barrera has joined Spanish club Real Zaragoza
on a season-long loan. The 24-year-old, who played against Aldershot on
Wednesday, could make his debut for the La Liga side against Real Madrid on
Sunday. A statement on the Hammers website said Mexico international
Barrera, who joined for £4m in July 2010, had struggled to adapt to life in
London. Language difficulties and personal reasons were behind his move, it
added. Barrera made 21 appearances for West Ham last season.

West Ham United have confirmed the signing of striker Sam Baldock from MK
Dons. The 22-year-old striker put pen to paper on a four-year deal, with an
option for a fifth year this evening (Friday) following a successful medical
that took place earlier in the day. Baldock, who has been given Kieron
Dyer's number seven shirt is unlikely to feature at Nottingham Forest this
weekend; the home fixture against Portsmouth the following weekend appears a
more likely target. "I am pleased to be here," he told whufc.com. "I am just
excited to be coming to such a great club, caked in so much history. I just
want to hit the ground running. "I want to show [the fans] what I can do and
hopefully everyone will be proud of me." West Ham, who has to fight off a
late bid by Southampton in order to land Baldock are thought to have paid
around £2million to secure his services, although the exact figure remains
undisclosed - as is the case with most of the club's transfers these days.

Speaking to Ultima Hora, Montenegro said: "I am happy for this transfer to

schedule and the system of life here. Now I will work hard to continue
succeeding." Montenegro is understood to have recently acquired an Italian
passport, without which he would have been unable to move to London. The
striker is just one of two young Paraguayans linked with a move to London in
recent weeks; the other being fellow youth international Jorge Ortega, who
currently plays for Tacuary FBC.

Allardyce: Parker talks under way

Sam Allardyce has confirmed that West Ham are talking to Tottenham with
regards to the permanent transfer of Scott Parker. The 30-year-old
midfielder is on the verge of landing the move he has craved all summer -
but according to Allardyce, Parker will only be allowed to go on terms
favourable to West Ham. "There's some dialogue going on at the moment and
that's all I'm aware of," West Ham's manager told Sky Sports. "In terms of
what level it's at I know that a deal has not been struck at this moment in
time for Scott Parker. "That depends on whether someone reaches the owner's
valuation." Although the sale of Parker would provide a huge boost to
Allardyce's transfer war chest, one player the extra cash definitely won't
be spent on is Joey Barton. The former Newcastle midfielder today signed a
four-year deal with Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers.

Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Tottenham are in negotiations with West
Ham over Scott Parker. It was revealed last night that West Ham had agreed
to open talks with Hotspur regarding the permanent transfer of the current
Football Writers' Player of the Year. Speaking this afternoon about the deal
as he left training, Redknapp revealed that he would be delighted to land
Parker, a player he has been chasing for some considerable time. "I love
Scotty, he's a fantastic player," Redknapp told Sky Sports. "Like any club,
you'd love to have him in your team but I don't know where it's at. "Daniel
[Levy] is dealing with it, whether there's anything happening today I'm not
sure. Hopefully we can get a deal done. If we can I'd certainly be pleased
to have him here, that's for sure. "We've been talking about him for quite a
while now. It's up to the Chairman as to whether it's a deal he feels is
worth doing financially. It'd be good. We've said all along that we've known
the people we wanted but it's just been difficult."

Parker sale to herald further arrivals

Scott Parker's impending departure is set to signal a late push in the
transfer market by West Ham. As mentioned here on KUMB.com yesterday (see
footnote) Parker is close to sealing a move to White Hart Lane - despite
West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur currently slugging it out in the courts over
the Olympic Stadium. The England midfielder is likely to move to north
London in a cash plus player deal - boosting both Sam Allardyce's transfer
war chest and understrength squad. But just as important to West Ham would
be the removal of some £3.5million from the club's annual wage bill. One
player linked with West Ham who is still to find a club for the new season
is Newcastle United's Joey Barton. Although the 27-year-old underwent a
medical at QPR yesterday he confirmed this morning that he was yet to make a
decision over his future. With Parker set to be removed from West Ham's wage
bill, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that United will look to
Barton as a potential replacement - although the player has already stated
this summer that he sees his future in the Premier League. Slightly closer
to a move to the Boleyn Ground today is MK Dons striker Sam Baldock, who is
undergoing a medical ahead of a move thought to be worth in the region of
£2million.

Baldock bags Hammers move
Striker signs four-year contract at Upton Park

West Ham have completed the signing of Sam Baldock on a four-year contract
from MK Dons. The Hammers have paid an undisclosed fee for the highly-rated
striker, with the deal including the option for a fifth year together should
both sides wish to prolong their association. Baldock had been interesting a
number of clubs this summer, but it is Sam Allardyce that has been able to
secure his signature. He passed a medical at Upton Park on Friday before
putting pen to paper. Baldock told the club's official website: "I am
pleased to be here. I am just excited to be coming to such a great club,
caked in so much history. I just want to hit the ground running.
"It is a massive club, isn't it? You just have to turn up at the stadium and
your head is looking up straight away. "The area, the fans are so
passionate. I want to show what I can do for them and hopefully everyone
will be proud of me."

Excited

Baldock becomes Allardyce's seventh signing of the summer, as he continues
his squad overhaul. He is expected to make his West Ham debut in Saturday's
Championship clash with Portsmouth. Sam Allardyce is delighted to have got
his man and is expecting big things from Baldock this season. "We are very
excited and very pleased to acquire such a young, talented goal-scorer," he
said. "I am sure he will go a long way and hopefully it will be an exciting
time to help get West Ham where we want them to go."

N Forest v West Ham preview
Last updated: 26th August 2011
SSN

Team news for Nottingham Forest's Championship clash with West Ham at the
City Ground on Sunday (kick-off 1.15pm). Manager Steve McClaren will have
Guy Moussi available for the first time this season. The French midfielder
has been sidelined by a calf problem but made a successful return from
injury as the reserves beat Burton. Moussi played 45 minutes of the 4-2 win
on Wednesday. George Boateng is likely to come back into McClaren's midfield
after being rested against Wycombe in the Carling Cup in midweek. Strikers
Ishmael Miller and Robbie Findley look set to keep their places in the team.
The pair were rewarded for their impressive substitute appearances against
Leicester last weekend with starts against Wycombe and both scored in the
4-1 win at Adams Park.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce will restore his big hitters to the side.
Allardyce made nine changes to his line-up as the Hammers were dumped out of
the Carling Cup by League Two Aldershot on Wednesday night. England
midfielder Scott Parker will return - assuming he has not been sold by then
- along with Robert Green, James Tomkins, Matt Taylor, Jack Collison, Mark
Noble and Carlton Cole. But Junior Stanislas could keep his place after his
goal capped an encouraging performance and George McCartney may be preferred
to Herita Ilunga at left-back. Teenager Callum McNaughton is suspended after
his debut red card, fellow centre-half Abdoulaye Faye (groin) is a doubt and
winger Gary O'Neil (ankle) is still sidelined.

Scott Out, Brian In?
August 26th, 2011 - 6:27 pm by S J Chandos
West Ham Till I Die

There is a report circulating that the club have opened negotiations with
Spurs regarding the possible transfer of Scott Parker. Obviously, the West
Ham board are temporarily suspending hostilities with Spurs, in the name of
economic and footballing expediency, to get a deal done before the summer
window shuts. I think that most fans probably accept that Scott Parker may
have to be sold to finance other incoming deals, even if selling to that
odious and ruthless club well and truly sticks in all our throats. There
may even be the possibility that it could be a part-exchange deal or involve
a season long loan of one or more of Spurs' fringe players? If so, we need
to make sure that we get the right player(s), rather than any old cast-off
of whom Arry wants to get rid! After all, optimistically, Bobby Zamora came
to the club, from Spurs, in part-exchange for Defoe and he did not do too
badly for us, did he? Of course every Hammers fan will have their own ideas
concerning who constitutes the 'right player(s)' to be included in any
pending deal.

Elsewhere, there was an intriguing report today that West Ham are due to
sign 18 year old Paraguay striker, Brian Montenegro Martinez, on an initial
one year deal, this Monday. He is an U-20 Paraguay international and has
recently acquired an Italian passport, which, of course, entitles him to
play in the EU without a work permit. If true, this is a deal that has come
well and truly out of left field. The key question is whether BMM is ready
for first team action this season or is potentially 'one for the future'?
Lets hope he is a young Tevez, giving us the pacy, goal poacher that we need
so badly! Once again, we can dream can't we?

We are now entering the real 'business end' of the summer transfer window,
hopefully things will start moving apace now. Although I hope that Parker's
potential departure, means that Green and Cole will be staying at the club.
Other possible exits? Now Barrera has gone on loan to Real Zaragosa, I
guess the odds would be on the likes of Faubert, Picquionne and, possibly,
Illunga moving? As for other incoming deals, the BMM story apart, what
could be in the pipeline? There is nothing confirmed at present, but Diop
and Baldock look like real possibilities. Apart from a ball winning
midfielder and at least another striker, I would also like to see us sign
another centre-back and a right-back to ensure adequate defensive cover
right across the back line.

As they say, we shall see, in the fullness of time! We can only hope and
pray that the end result of our summer transfer business is that, overall,
we end up with a better balanced squad, with greater strength indepth, to
secure automatic promoted back to the top tier. That is the bottom line as
far as this season is concerned!

SJ. Chandos.

Tottenham confirm they want Parker

Harry Redknapp has confirmed he is trying to sign Scott Parker. The Spurs
boss said of the West Ham and England midfielder: "Yes, there is interest
but I don't know if it will happen. It's a case of if it's do-able." The
Hammers want £8million for 30-year-old Parker and have already rejected an
offer of £4m from QPR. But Tottenham are believed to have offered a
cash-plus-player deal. West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said on Friday night:
"There's some dialogue going on at the moment but that is all I'm aware of –
no deal has been struck so far. "It all depends on whether somebody matches
the valuation of the player. "Scott has really enjoyed his time at West Ham
but he wants to leave to stay in touch with the England team and you can

Hammers, but the 27-year-old striker turned down the move. And he maintains
that he is ready to fight new signings John Carew and Sam Baldock for a
first-team place. Cole, whose side meet Nottingham Forest this weekend,
said: "I know a fee got accepted. The position West Ham were in means I'm
one of the saleable assets and they had to accept. "But it was down to me
and I didn't really want to move. It wasn't best for me and my family to go

Allardyce: West Ham ARE in talks with Spurs over Parker
Published 15:23 26/08/11 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Tottenham are in talks with West Ham over the potential transfer of
midfielder Scott Parker, Hammers manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed. Parker
has made no secret of his desire to return to the Barclays Premier League to
further his England career and Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is a keen
admirer of the midfielder. The 64-year-old has been linked with a move for
the former Chelsea man all summer and also failed with a bid to sign him
last year but is determined to bring him to White Hart Lane this year, it
appears. With the transfer window closing on Wednesday night, Allardyce is
keen to move on Parker in order to fund new signings. The former Blackburn
boss confirmed talks had begun over a deal today. When asked whether
negotiations were taking place between the two London clubs over a deal for
the midfielder, Allardyce said: "I am not in talks (personally) with them
but there is some dialogue going on at the moment. That is all I am aware
of."
Allardyce sounded a word of caution about the transfer though, perhaps well
aware that Spurs are renowned as shrewd operators in the market. "As in
terms of what level it is at, I certainly know that a deal has not been
struck by any way, shape or form at this moment in time about Scott Parker,"
Allardyce added. "Whether he is here on Wednesday depends on whether someone
reaches the owners' valuation."

Parker was one of the few players to come out of last season with his head
held high as West Ham ended the season bottom of the Barclays Premier League
table.
A transfer, whether permanent or temporary, to White Hart Lane would appear
to be a logical move for the Londoner, who fits the bill as the type of
experienced head that Redknapp has longed for for some time. Redknapp is a
big fan of the midfielder's workrate and creativity and he has also been
linked with Chelsea and Arsenal this summer. With Spurs currently about to
embark on what could be a long campaign in the Europa League, signing Parker
would make sense as Redknapp is short in midfield thanks to injuries to
Sandro and Steven Pienaar. Parker joined West Ham for £7million from
Newcastle in 2007 and has made 119 appearances for the London club since.
Prior to his time at Newcastle, the Lambeth-born star had spells at Charlton
and Chelsea.

Scott Parker is poised to hand in a transfer request at West Ham over
proposed move to Tottenham
By Jason Burt10:00PM BST 26 Aug 20113
Telegraph.co.uk

Scott Parker is expected to hand in a formal written transfer request to
force through a move from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham
have finally opened negotiations with West Ham to sign the 30-year-old
England international who is desperate to remain in the Premier League to
preserve his chances of playing for his country. West Ham have insisted all
summer that Parker can only leave for £8million and last week rejected an
offer of £4 million — plus £1 million if they avoid relegation — from Queens
Park Rangers. Parker has long been admired by Spurs manager Harry Redknapp
but chairman Daniel Levy has been reluctant to pay the fee West Ham have
demanded. It may well be that Spurs are now offering to loan West Ham one or
two players as well as pay a fee to sign Parker on a permanent basis. Talks
are ongoing between the two clubs with West Ham accepting that despite their
reluctance to sell to Spurs it might represent the best deal for them
especially as the player is prepared to formally ask to go. Chelsea,
Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa have all considered making a move
for Parker but it seems he is destined to join Spurs.. Harry Redknapp said
on Friday: "Yeah, there is interest but I don't know if it will happen. It's
just a case of whether it's do-able."

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said: "It all depends on whether somebody
matches the valuation of the player. Scott has really enjoyed his time at
West Ham but he wants to leave to stay in touch with the England team and
you can understand that. We just have to move on and wish him the best for
the future." Redknapp's most pressing concern is to get the better of
Manchester City at White Hart Lane on Sunday lunchtime, and to do that he is
set to call upon the services of midfielder Luka Modric, whose transfer
route to Chelsea remains firmly blocked by Levy. With Chelsea considering
whether to up their offer for Modric to £40m, Redknapp was confident the
Croatia international would resist the temptation to put in a below-par
performance to force a sale, or take the nuclear option of refusing to play.
He said: "It's not in his nature to do that but there are players who go
'I'm leaving, don't try stopping me'. I've seen a player, when I was
playing, hold a manager up against the wall because he wouldn't sell him.
"It helps Luka is only 5ft 4ins! If he was 6ft 10ins and told me he wanted
to go, I would have said 'go!'"

City's enormous financial muscle has allowed them to recruit Samir Nasri
against Arsenal's wishes and Redknapp believed that although Roberto Mancini
does not have a talent of Lionel Messi's calibre to call upon, the Italian
nevertheless now boasts greater strength in depth than Champions League
holders Barcelona. He said: "I would say that they have probably got as
strong a squad as any team in the world. They don't have Messi but they have
a stronger squad than Barcelona, certainly man for man, they have two
players in every position almost. Top, top-class players. "You look at that
forward line now, Aguero, Tevez, Dzeko, Silva, it's amazing then you have
players like Balotelli who can't get in the team." Tottenham have also
learned their Europa League opponents and Redknapp was delighted to find
Shamrock Rovers in Spurs' pool. He said: "All credit to Shamrock Rovers and
we look forward to going there and playing them. Dublin is it? Lovely, we'll
have a weekend in Dublin." Jonathan Roche, the chairman of Shamrock Rovers,
arrived late in Monaco after celebrating in Belgrade where his side secured
a shock 3-2 aggregate win over Partizan on Thursday night. "I've not slept
but I'm living the dream,'' said Roche, who learned about Shamrock's draw
via his mobile phone.

West Ham loyalty will go out of the window for Chris Cohen at City Ground
tomorrow
Saturday, August 27, 2011Nottingham
This Is Nottingham

GROWING up as a West Ham fan, Chris Cohen was well versed on the subject of
high expectations. By the time he graduated from the famous academy of
football at Upton Park, there was nothing left for him to learn on the
topic. In that particular part of east London, flowing, passing football is
as much of a tradition as pie and mash and jellied eels. As Sam Allardyce's
Hammers prepare to visit the City Ground for the first time since their
relegation from the Premier League, Cohen admits it is an occasion he is
looking forward to. But, while many will be expecting West Ham to bounce
back at the first time of asking, Cohen is also well versed on the nuances
of Championship football. And he believes the Hammers will not have it all
their own way in the division this season. More to the point, he wants to
ensure that they do not have things all their own way in front of the
television cameras tomorrow afternoon. "When I left West Ham (to go to
Yeovil), they were in the Premier League and qualifying to play in Europe –
and Forest were in League One," said Cohen. "So it shows how quickly things
can change. I don't think anyone is a shoe-in for promotion this season,
including them. "I saw their game against Leeds and Leeds looked very, very
good – yet they are towards the bottom of the table. West Ham are meant to
be at the top. "That game ended in a draw, but it could have gone either
way. Anyone can beat anyone, in this division. "West Ham fans will be
expecting to be back in the Premier League next season. "But, when I was
there, West Ham just scraped into the play-offs in the season when everyone
expected us to go up easily. "We ended up doing it, but there was a lot of
unrest in the final weeks as the season came to an end. "West Ham fans are
used to playing free-flowing football, playing in the top flight and doing
well in cup competitions. Their fans will soon be unsettled if they are not
where they want them to be."

Many of Cohen's family and friends will be coming north for the game – and
many more will watch on TV. "I have always supported them and my family have
as well," he said. "It is always a nice occasion when we play them, but
three points is always the most important thing. "We haven't had enough wins
so far this season, so we want one this weekend and we need to produce
another improved performance. "Transitional is the word at the minute. The
new manager had come in and is trying to get us to play how he wants us to.
"A lot of Championship clubs have gone out to lower league opposition in the
Carling Cup. "We had tough games against Notts County and Wycombe and we
came through them both. "We need to do that in the league now and kick-start
our season." Having earned a dramatic, if decidedly flawed draw against
Leicester last weekend, Cohen believes Forest can prove a point tomorrow.
"Leicester and West Ham will be the teams to beat this season, I would
predict," he said. "We just need to produce our best and see where we are
after that, in a few months time. "But, if we can beat them tomorrow, we can
prove that we are one of the best teams in the division as well."

There will be a sense of familiarity for manager Steve McClaren as well, as
he comes up against Allardyce, a man he knows well. "I know Big Sam very
well and I know that it is another test, another challenge for our team,"
said McClaren. "We learnt a lot from playing against Leicester and we will
learn a lot more against West Ham. I have seen West Ham a few times this
season and I know exactly what to expect. "Everyone has their own way of
playing and winning football matches. We know what Sam's is, because we have
met many times over the years. And he knows mine. "It will be an interesting
game and one which, over 46 games, may not have much bearing – but will
teach us much about where we are. "We will have faced, in my eyes, the two
favourites in one week."

McClaren says Forest are still a work in progress however. "A lot of changes
have gone on, we have had a change of manager, change of situation and a
change of team," he said. "It is similar with Leicester and West Ham. It
takes time to get a team go gel together. It takes time to get your
philosophy over and introduce the way that you want to play. "During those
times you are going to see inconsistency. We have had that, because we are
searching for those things. West Ham and Leicester are the same. "But, trust
me, at the end of the season, they will be the two clubs that, if you finish
above, you will probably get promotion."

West Ham United have allowed Pablo Barrera to join Real Zaragoza on a
season-long loan. The 24-year-old has been loaned out after struggling to
adapt to life in London since arriving from Mexico because of language
difficulties and personal reasons. He started the 2-1 defeat by Aldershot
Town on Wednesday night, before travelling to Spain on Thursday for a
medical. Barrera joined the Hammers from Club Universidad Nacional in July
2010. He made 21 appearances last season and then appeared in the 2-0
pre-season victory over Zaragoza. His sole competitive appearance this
campaign before the Aldershot tie was as a substitute in the opening-day
defeat by Cardiff City. Zaragoza and former Mexico manager Javier Aguirre
could hand Barrera his debut in the club's home meeting with Real Madrid CF

Jack Collison could be lining up against Scott Parker at Wembley next month
after being named in the Wales squad for their two forthcoming UEFA EURO
2012 qualifiers. The Hammers midfielder is in a 24-man selection for the

George looks to Sunday

George McCartney is targeting league success following Wednesday's Carling
Cup exit
25.08.2011

George McCartney admitted his second West Ham United debut had not exactly
gone to plan. The defender, who spent two seasons with the club between 2006
and 2008, was handed his bow in Wednesday's 2-1 Carling Cup first-round
defeat by Aldershot Town. He has joined on a season-long loan from
Sunderland The 30-year-old began the tie against the League Two side in his
usual position of left-back, only to be forced into the centre of defence
when debutant Callum McNaughton was sent-off for a professional foul two
minutes after half-time. Despite being reduced to ten men, McCartney
insisted a West Ham side that also contained Kevin Nolan, Winston Reid,
Julien Faubert and substitutes Herita Ilunga and Matt Taylor should have
been strong enough to maintain the lead given to them by Junior Stanislas'
first-half goal. Instead, The Shots fired back with two goals in the final
13 minutes to steal a place in the second round. "It's very disappointing,
especially going 1-0 up," he told West Ham TV. "Before the game, everybody
probably expected us to win and win comfortably by three or four goals, but
Aldershot like any other lower-league team, came and gave it their all.
"Once we had a man sent-off, they were pretty much on top of us and got the
two goals. "I think in the first half there wasn't really much in it. I
didn't think either side was creating much or many chances, but when you go
1-0 up you try to see the game out. "In the second half, you could say that
the sending-off has changed the game, but we should be experienced enough to
see the game out. If not, we should have got to extra time and penalties at
least."
McCartney looked strong on what was just his second outing since re-joining
the Hammers earlier this month. However, he knows only more game-time will
help him to regain full match-fitness. "It was OK. Obviously, aside from the
reserve game last week, this was the first game I've played in a month or
so. It's all about getting my fitness and match-sharpness back and the only
way to do that is to play more games, so hopefully I'll get them and I'll
feel better and enjoy winning next time."

The former Northern Ireland international's first West Ham debut ended in an
infamous 2-1 League Cup defeat at Chesterfield in October 2006. That season
ended with an unforgettable great escape from relegation, and McCartney is
hoping for a similarly successful end to the current campaign climaxing in
promotion back to the Premier League. That quest will continue when the
Hammers head to Nottingham Forest in the npower Championship on Sunday - a
match the Belfast-born player would love to be involved in if selected by
manager Sam Allardyce. "The team that was sent out was sent out to win the
game, so everyone is very disappointed. We should have won the game but we
didn't. "Now we've just got to forget about it and fully concentrate on the
league. "I think it's obviously up to the manager, but the only way to get
fitness is to play more games. It will be down to the manager what the team
is, but as long as I stay fit and do my best in training every day, it'll be
up to him whether he selects me or not."

It was revealed yesterday that West Ham's bid - thought to be worth around
£1.5million - for a player watched twice in recent weeks by Sam Allardyce
had been rejected by the Dons. Today Robinson spoke for the first time about
the interest in his in-form striker, whilst admitting that it will be very
difficult to hang on 22-year-old Baldock for whom an earlier bid, thought to
have been from Peterborough, had already been rejected. "We've had another
offer," Robinson told a pre-match press conference. "I don't want to name
the other club, and the club deserves the respect to not be named. It's the
second bid we've had this summer and we just need to see where we go from
here. "We don't know what's going to happen, we don't know what's round the
corner and we will see how that unfolds. We have a valuation on Sam that we
feel the player deserves. He's been a remarkable servant for the football
club during his time here; he is one of ours that's come through the system.

"We have had an offer, an official offer - [but] I believe that will be the
first of many. We'll see what unfolds but sometimes the clubs that we're
talking about are remarkable football clubs and sometimes it's money that
you can't reject. "I'd be disappointed to lose him but we will see what the
next 24 hours brings for the football club and Sam Baldock."

However Robinson admitted that should his club receive an offer that matches
their valuation, they would not stand in Bladock's way should he wish to
move. "I would be disappointed if he went but we're a club that is very
proud of our tradition in relation to letting players move on and do other
things," he added. "Some people have criticised that but I think that
should be applauded because it gives the opportunity for boys to perform on
a platform and better their career."

West Ham hopeful in Baldock race

West Ham United and Southampton are said to be fighting it out to secure the
services of MK Dons striker Sam Baldock. Both clubs, currently residing in
the higher echelons of the Championship, are said to have made acceptable
offers for the in-form 22-year-old striker who has also been watched by
Reading. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has seen Baldock in action twice and
placed a bid thought to be worth around £1.5million earlier this week. That
bid was rejected before it was reported that the Saints had come in with an
eleventh hour £2million offer, that was duly accepted. United are understood
to have since matched Southampton's offer and the decision over which to
accept is reported to have been left with the player, who some sources (of
varying credibility) have suggested would prefer a move to London.
However one local media source in Milton Keynes claimed that Baldock was
heading to Southampton for talks last night (Wednesday).

Levy under scrutiny again

Police have requested a copy of the letter received by West Ham from
Tottenham Hotspur in which it is claimed the north London club offered to
drop legal action in return for West Ham doing likewise.

Earlier this week, Chairman Daniel Levy and his team - who are not supported
by the vast majority of Tottenham supporters in their bid to move to east
London - won the right to a judicial review of the Olympic Stadium bidding
process.

Whilst West Ham were playing Aldershot in the Carling Cup last night the
club hit back with a statement, posted on whufc.com, sensationally alleging
that Tottenham had offered to cancel the planned review in return for United
dropping their own case against the corporate investors employed by Spurs.

The as-yet-unknown intelligence agency, acting at the behest of Hotspur
officials, are said to have illegally gained banking and phone records of
employees of both West Ham and the Olympic Park Legacy Company earlier this
year and were already subject to a police investigation.

Having been made aware of West Ham's statement, the Met contacted United in
order to request a copy of the document in question, which was duly
provided. Scotland Yard refused to comment further when asked for an update
on Wednesday evening.

Although the specific details of the document remain a secret it could lead
to serious ramifications for Levy, who is reported to have asked the
Government for legal indemnity from any future action pertaining to the
Stratford issue as a sweetener in the deal to redevelop a new stadium in
Haringay, close to their current White Hart Lane ground.

It is understood that should those facing potential charges over the theft
of personal and confidential information be found guilty, custodial
sentences are almost certain to follow. Quite how far up the chain of
command that would extend exactly is unknown, but Chairman Levy will no
doubt be sleeping a little uncomfortably tonight having failed with his
latest scheme.

Buenas noches, Barrera

Pablo Barrera has finally clinched a move to Spain following months of
speculation. The Mexican winger arrived at West Ham with huge promise on the
back of a successful 2010 World Cup. However his time in England has proved
to be a disaster, with the 24-year-old failing to show any signs of
repeating the form that persuaded United to pay his former club UNAM
£4million for his services last year. Barrera will join Spanish club Real
Zaragoza, who played West Ham at the Boleyn Ground last month in a
pre-season friendly (the Hammers winning 2-0). Although news of his
departure has since been confirmed by West Ham United, the game was given
away earlier today when a picture was posted by West Ham's number 12 on his
Twitter feed showing him in the Spanish city. A later Tweet simply stated
"On the road to Zaragoza". "Aver si adivinan donde estoy?"

The deal is said to be a season-long loan with an option to make the deal
permanent, should Barrera's time with Blanquillos prove to be a success. In
other transfer news, Lee Clayton of the Daily Mail reports that Scott Parker
is close to sealing a move to Tottenham. The deal is said to be cash up
front plus additional bonus payments and players, presumably on loan.

Barrera at West Ham: stats

2010/11: Played 21 (PL14, CC4, FAC3), Starts 13, Sub 8, Goals 0.
2011/12: Played 2 (NPC1, CC1), Starts 1, Sub 1, Goals 0.

Dons reject Baldock offer

Boss Karl Robinson has confirmed that MK Dons have rejected an estimated
£1.5million bid for striker Sam Baldock from West Ham. Hammers boss Sam
Allardyce has made no secret of his interest in Baldock, having watched him
score a hat-trick against Chesterfield last weekend before seeing the
22-year-old add to his tally with a terrific 20-yard strike in the Carling
Cup at Norwich on Tuesday night. Robinson admitted that an approach had been
made, but remained tight-lipped on which club had made the bid. "We have had
an offer - an official offer. I believe that will be the first of many,"
Robinson told the club's official website. "We'll see what unfolds but
sometimes it's money that you can't reject. I'd be disappointed to lose him
but we will see what the next 24 hours brings. We will do our business in a
sensible and respectful way. "The chairman has been very good, we have a
valuation on Sam that we feel the player deserves. He's been a remarkable
servant for the club during his time here. He is one of ours he's come
through the system. "I would be disappointed if he went but we're a club
that is very proud of our tradition in relation to letting players move on
and do other things, it's a club that doesn't stand in the way of anybody."

Clarets chasing Stanislas

Skysports.com understands Burnley are eyeing a move West Ham attacker Junior
Stanislas. Having already raided West Ham for Zavon Hines this summer
Clarets boss Eddie Howe is now hoping to strike a deal for Stanislas. Howe
is looking for reinforcements before the close of the transfer window after
losing Martin Paterson and recent signing Danny Ings to injury. Stanislas
has found himself down the pecking order at West Ham this season, with the
winger marking his first start of the season with a goal in Wednesday's
Carling Cup defeat to Aldershot. The 21-year-old could be tempted to move in
search of regular first-team football if he does not figure in Sam
Allardyce's plans, and Howe is hoping to lure him to Turf Moor.

West Ham pass dossier to police in Olympic Stadium row
By ANDREW DILLON
Published: Today
The Sun

WEST HAM have handed a document to police which they believe will boost
their battle with Tottenham over the Olympic Stadium. The Hammers claim
their rivals offered to drop their legal challenge into the stadium's future
if the East London outfit abandoned a criminal probe into a private
investigator alleged to have worked for Spurs. Tottenham have won a judicial
review into plans to let West Ham take over the 80,000-seater arena after
the 2012 Games. Upton Park top brass claim their confidential emails have
been illegally accessed by a private investigator they believe to be on
Tottenham's payroll. The two clubs are at loggerheads in an increasingly
bitter row over who should get the stadium in 2014. The Met's Economic and
Specialist Crimes Unit is investigating. Spurs declined to comment.

West Ham plot move for Papa Bouba Diop
Published: Today
The Sun

WEST HAM are mulling over a move for former Fulham midfielder Papa Bouba
Diop. Diop, 33, is a free agent after being released by AEK Athens and would
welcome a move back to England. The Senegal star has been training with the
Hammers and his experience and versatility will appeal to boss Sam
Allardyce, who is keen to strengthen his squad. MK Dons striker Sam Baldock
will decide today whether to join Hammers or Southampton for £1.4million.
West Ham winger Pablo Barrera has joined Real Zaragoza on loan for a year.

West Ham winger Pablo Barrera has joined Primera Division side Real Zaragoza
on a season-long loan. The Mexico winger travelled to Spain on Friday for a
medical, with the West Ham website explaining the player had been loaned out
'after struggling to adapt to life to London since his arrival from Mexico
because of language and personal reasons'. The 24-year-old, who joined the
Championship club in July 2010 from Nacional, started the Hammers' Carling
Cup defeat by Aldershot on Wednesday night. Barrera's only previous
appearance this season was a substitute in the opening-day defeat by
Cardiff.

West Ham United 1-2 Aldershot
The ten-man Hammers are shot out of the Carling Cup by Dean Holdsworth's
League Two side
24.08.2011

WEST HAM UNITED v ALDERSHOT TOWN
CARLING CUP FIRST ROUND
WEDNESDAY 24 AUGUST 2011
KICK-OFF: 7.45PM
FULL AUDIO COVERAGE - WEST HAM TV

Final score - West Ham United 1-2 Aldershot Town

96 mins - That's it. Aldershot have won. West Ham are out. Highlights and
post-match reaction will appear on West Ham TV. The Hammers return to npower
Championship action at Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.
95 mins - The Aldershot fans are whistling...
94 mins - That's West Ham's best chance of the second half and probably
their last chance of the match. A long diagonal ball is not dealt with by
Straker and Taylor gets there. He takes a touch and shoots with his right
foot, but the ball hits the side-netting and not the back of the net.
93 mins - Aldershot are playing out time deep in the Hammers half, winning a
couple of throw-ins. Finally the ball goes behind for a goal kick.
92 mins - Time is running out and the ball is in the East Stand ahead of an
Aldershot throw.
91 mins - Stanislas himself strikes the free-kick and Young dives to his
left to save.
90 mins - Stanislas heads the ball forward and an Aldershot player handles.
We're going to have five added minutes. First, Hylton goes off and Anthony
Pulis comes on.
89 mins - GOAL! McGlashan gets down the left and out-paces Ilunga before
crossing. The ball falls to Hylton, who drives a low right-footed shot
across Boffin and into the bottom corner.
89 mins - They probably won't now...
88 mins - Nouble gets forward and crosses low from the right, but Aldershot
clear. The 19,879-strong crowd could have extra time on their hands soon...
86 mins - Boffin is called into action again, clawing Hylton's shot out for
a corner, Rodman curls the ball over, but Mr Scott has spotted an
infringement.
86 mins - West Ham have a free-kick on halfway. Ilunga launches it into the
box and Reid wins it. The ball bounces up and Collins controls before
smashing upfield.
85 mins - Another chance! Straker crosses and Boffin elects not to come. The
ball bounces up and McGlashan flings himself at it, but his header goes
over. Just.
84 mins - The Shots are still firing. This time, it's striker Rankine who
comes close, turning and firing a rising blast that flashes past the
left-hand post. The away fans fancy their chances.
82 mins - West Ham won't want extra time, but they won't want to go out
either. They need to fashion a chance here, somehow, with their ten men...
79 mins - Aldershot look the most likely to win this as McGlashan turns and
slams a shot a couple of yards over the top.
77 mins - GOAL! Aldershot are level! A cross from the right lands at the
feet of Rodman, who cuts inside and shoots. The bal hits Boffin on the legs
and Guttridge reacts quickest to slam the ball into the bottom right-hand
corner.
76 mins - Aldershot clear the corner and Ilunga fouls McGlashan.
75 mins - Ooooh, so close! Stanislas curls over a superb cross and Nolan
leaps, but the combined efforts of centre-backs Jones and Morris keep the
ball out as it flicks off a head and behind for a corner. It was only a yard
or two wide of the far post.
74 mins - The corner is punched by Boffin but straight to an Aldershot
player. He shoots but Nolan is there to hack clear from inside his own
six-yard box.
74 mins - That's half a chance. A cross comes in from the right and Hylton's
header is goalbound until McCartney nods away. West Ham concede possession
again and Rankine has a chance, but Faubert makes a fine block.
72 mins - Nouble is putting himself about already, chasing down defenders
and hassling strongly. He earns a good cheer from the home fans for his work
ethic.
69 mins - A final change from Big Sam as Piquionne comes off to be replaced
by Frank Nouble.
68 mins - Substitute Rankine gets in behind the back four, but Taylor shows
good pace to get back and make the sliding challenge. He concedes a corner,
which is powerfully headed clear.
66 mins - Herd brings down Ilunga and the crowd want the referee to make it
10v10. He doesn't. Mr Scott books the Aldershot right-back and captain.
65 mins - Aldershot make a second change, with the speedy Jermaine McGlashan
replacing Vincenti. That's another attacking change from Dean Holdsworth.
63 mins - The unfortunate McNaughton is the first West Ham player to be
sent-off since Piquionne at Everton on 21 January 2011.
60 mins - Another effort from distance, this time from Rodman. The ball
flashes across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. Boffin was diving,
so it must have been close.
58 mins - It's still pretty end-to-end here as Jersey international Vincenti
tries his luck again from 25 yards. The tall midfielder drags his effort low
and wide of the left-hand post.
55 mins - Aldershot also make a change. Michael Rankine is on for Taylor.
53 mins - Before the corner can be taken, Barrera is replaced by Taylor. The
corner comes to nothing. Aldershot break through Hylton, but Ilunga smashes
the ball against the striker and it loops high and behind for a goal kick.
53 mins - It's all happening. Boffin's long clearance is controlled by
Piquionne. He holds the ball up and finds Stanislas, whose rasping shot from
25 yards is tipped over by Young.
51 mins - The home side are creaking a bit here. A cross from the left comes
in and Hylton's shot is well blocked by McCartney.
50 mins - They fancy this now, do Aldershot Town, as Rodman takes advantage
of a Reid slip to hammer a low shot a couple of yards wide of the left-hand
post. McCartney is now playing at centre-back, with Ilunga at left-back and
Piquionne up front on his own.
49 mins - Three free-kick is delayed while McNaughton makes his way off. The
free-kick from Vincenti takes a deflection off the wall and goes narrowly
wide. The visitors want a penalty for handball! The corner comes to nothing
as a free-kick is given. In the break in play, Ilunga replaces Carew.
47 mins - McNaughton is sent-off on his debut. The centre-back is out-paced
by Hylton and he elects to slide in. He mis-times it and brings down the
No10. Referee Mr Scott pulls out the red card!
47 mins - No changes from either manager and no chances since the
break...Until now...
46 mins - We're back underway again here...
OK, we're nearly ready to re-start. Before we do, just to tell you that
Jordan Spence's Bristol City are drawing 0-0 with Paolo Di Canio's Swindon
Town at half-time in another first-round tie.

Half-time score - West Ham United 1-0 Aldershot Town

47 mins - After a couple of minutes of added time, the referee blows for
half-time. Join us again in less than 15 minutes for the second period.
46 mins - Half a chance for Sears from a neat pass by Barrera, but he is
forced wide and his low cross for Stanislas is easily cut out. Moments
later, a block by Straker sees the ball fly out of the ground between the
Sir Trevor Brooking and East Stands. That's on its way to the bus station...
44 mins - To be fair to Aldershot, they're giving this a good go, as you
might expect. They're being out-passed, but they've forced four corners and
Boffin has had to make a few saves.
42 mins - Aldershot win another corner as Rodman's cross hits McCartney.
Rodman takes and Morris heads down, forcing Stanislas to stab off the line.
The Shots come again and have a shot through Taylor from 25 yards, but
Boffin is there to claim.
38 mins - Left-back Straker leads the charge this time and cuts the ball
right to Rodman. His low cross is dangerous, but Boffin shows good handling
as he dives to his right to cut it out.
36 mins - Rodman takes a corner from the right and McNaughton bravely heads
clear. He's won virtually everything that has come his way so far.
35 mins - Piquionne does well again, getting to the byline and pulling a low
ball back for Sears. It's a shooting chance, but the No19 jumps a bit as he
shoots and it's blocked. Sears tries again, but the ball goes behind for a
goal kick.
32 mins - McCartney gives the ball to Rodman, who beats Nolan and crosses.
Aldershot have three men in the box, but Guttridge's volley is wayward.
Barrera brings the ball away and a loose touch nearly lets in Stanislas, but
Young is out quickly to clear.
30 mins - Reid intercepts and sends Carew off down the right. The big man
shows a turn of pace to get there first and win a throw. The ball is worked
across to Barrera and McCartney, but the latter's cross is headed on to
Sears, who is offside.
28 mins - Hylton shoots from distance and the ball hits McNaughton. Corner.
Rodman takes and Darren Jones rises high but can only glance his header well
wide of the target.
26 mins - Stanislas is enjoying himself. He shoots again from very near
where he scored earlier, but this time it's close enough for Young to dive
to his left and push the ball away for a throw in front of the East Stand.
26 mins - The ball skips behind off a head for an Aldershot corner. It's
taken short, but the long-ranger from Vincenti is well over the top.
25 mins - Great football by West Ham. Piquionne, who has looked lively,
combines down the left with Barrera, who bursts into the box and crosses low
for Carew. The ball is just behind the Norwegian, who tries to backheel it
past Young. There is not quite enough pace on the ball and Young saves low
down.
23 mins - Good tracking by Nolan, who races back towards his own corner flag
to close down Rodman. The No11 tries to skip past the Hammers skipper, but
just knocks the ball behind for a goal kick.
21 mins - McNaughton has done well so far. He's done everything simple so
far.
18 mins - It's a very entertaining game this. West Ham threaten again
through Stanislas, but his pass is cut out and Aldershot break. A long shot
comes in and Boffin parries. He leaps and gets to the loose ball, but
Faubert is challenged in the melee and needs the physio on. It's time for a
drink while the magic sponge does its work.
16 mins - GOAL! Barrera runs at Herd but loses out to the visiting skipper.
However, the Mexican hassles and hassles and eventually Herd makes a mistake
by passing straight to Stanislas. He takes a touch and curls a superb shot
into the top right-hand corner from 25 yards.
15 mins - I am reliably informed that Big Sam has made nine changes to the
starting XI that drew with Leeds on Sunday. Only Reid and Nolan started both
games.
14 mins - Signs of West Ham taking a hold on the game. Stanislas feeds
Faubert wide right. He crosses and Carew gets his head to the ball, but
can't direct it goalwards. Aldershot clear their lines.
12 mins - Faubert smashes a free-kick from inside his own half up to the
edge of the penalty area. Carew wins the header and the ball drops to
Barrera. He runs and crosses left-footed, but again Young makes the catch,
11 mins - Aldershot threaten again as Hylton breaks through a challenge and
cuts inside. He shoots right-footed from about 25 yards but it is straight
at Boffin.
8 mins - It's open so far. Piquionne loops a pass over the left-back Straker
to Sears. He looks up and clips in a high cross that Young claims above the
head of Carew.
6 mins - That's a golden chance for the visitors. Taylor races on to a
through ball and is clear. Boffin hesitates, but makes up for his error by
saving with his legs. McNaughton clears up by smashing the ball out for a
throw.
5 mins - West Ham's first proper attack sees Piquionne break down the right
and clip in a cross aimed for Carew. Instead, Barrera wins the header but it
hits a defender.
4 mins - Aldershot force another throw off Reid. Straker takes it and the
ball is headed back to him. The Grenada international hammers the ball
across the box at head height, but there is nobody able to take advantage.
3 mins - West Ham are playing in a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation, with Barrera left
and Piquionne right of Nolan, Sears and Stanislas. Carew is leading the
line.
2 mins - That will do McNaughton the power of good as he wins a header above
Taylor and then stabs a decent ball down the left flank for Carew to chase.
1 min - A long throw into the box drops to Taylor, but his white boot can
only volley the ball high over the top. That was a half-chance within 60
seconds for the visitors.

7.46pm - Aldershot's Luke Guttridge gets us underway...

7.45pm - Carew is wearing some snazzy bright yellow boots. Aldershot Town's
players have a huddle and we're nearly ready to go...

7.42pm - The two teams emerge to 'Bubbles' led by captains Kevin Nolan and
Ben Herd. George McCartney gets a good reception as his name is read out.
John Carew also gets a 'Careeeeeeeeeeeeew' from the fans! Finally, 'No37
Callum McNaughton' is welcomed to the first team by the supporters. Nice
touch, that.

7.35pm - Aldershot will be in all-white tonight, while West Ham have altered
their home strip slightly to wear blue shorts and blue socks. Just to give
them a mention, young professionals Ahmed Abdulla, Callum Driver and Eoin
Wearen were also called-up as part of the matchday squad this evening.

7.20pm - The two teams are out on the pitch warming-up. The Aldershot Town
fans are making a fair bit of noise away to my left in the Sir Trevor
Brooking Stand. To give you a bit more information about Callum McNaughton,
he signed a third-year scholarship in summer 2010 before being rewarded with
a first professional contract in July 2011. I have just spoken to Academy
Director Tony Carr and he is excited about the prospect of another Academy
graduate making his first-team bow.

7pm - On the bench tonight are third-year scholar goalkeeper Sam Cowler, who
will wear No42 and England Under-18 pair George Moncur (No44) and Robert
Hall (No46). Moncur scored for West Ham against Aldershot Town in an FA
Youth Cup third-round victory over The Shots here in December 2010.

6.55pm - John Carew makes his full debut, George McCartney makes his second
'debut' and Academy graduate and first-year professional Callum McNaughton
makes his West Ham United debut! The No37 was born in Bishop's Stortford,
spent a spell on loan at his hometown club and returned to captain the
Hammers reserve team at the end of last season. Tall and confident,
McNaughton is 19 and flame-haired.

6.50pm - The teams are in...

West Ham United: Boffin, Faubert, McCartney, McNaughton, Reid, Sears,
Barrera, Stanislas, Nolan, Piquionne, Carew
Subs: Cowler, Taylor, Noble, Ilunga, Nouble, Moncur, Hall.

Aldershot Town: Young, Herd, Straker, Jones, Morris, Guttridge, Collins,
Vincenti, Taylor, Hylton, Rodman
Subs: Worner, Brown, Pulis, Montgomery, Bubb, McGlashan, Rankine

6.30pm - The Aldershot Town squad have arrived at the Boleyn Ground. Rumour
has it that more than 1,500 travelling fans are making the trip to east
London to cheer their team on. We should have team news for you in about 15
minutes...
Good evening and welcome to this evening's re-arranged Carling Cup
first-round tie between West Ham United and League Two club Aldershot Town.
The original match was scheduled to take place on Tuesday 9 August, but had
to be postponed on police advice due to the civil unrest in parts of London
that week.
Tonight, there are no such problems to worry about as West Ham seek to
extend their perfect record in the Carling Cup first round - four wins in
four attempts! West Ham's most-recent first-round tie was against Southend
United on 23 August 2004, when the Hammers ran out 2-0 victors at the Boleyn
Ground.
Aldershot, meanwhile, have not won any of the three League Cup first-round
ties they have contested since the club was re-formed in 1992.
A full match preview is available here.

The Shots are hoping to become the seventh League Two club to reach the
second round, following Barnet, Bristol Rovers, Hereford United,
Macclesfield Town, Morecambe and Northampton Town. Paolo Di Canio's Swindon
Town could also win through to the second round, as their re-arranged
first-round tie with Jordan Spence's Bristol City will also take place
tonight.

Aldershot manager and lifelong West Ham supporter Dean Holdsworth will also
be keen to get one over his former Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce.
Indeed, Holdsworth has paid tribute to Big Sam for the influence he has had
on his coaching career in tonight's matchday programme.
Team news-wise, Allardyce has promised to pick a squad that mixes youth with
experience this evening. John Carew could be in line for a full debut, while
George McCartney could make his second debut for the Hammers since
re-joining the club on a season-long loan from Sunderland.
The two starting lineups and substitutes will be announced at shortly after
6.45pm on this page and on the club's official twitter feed.

West Ham United: Boffin, Faubert, McCartney, McNaughton, Reid, Sears,
Barrera (Taylor 53), Stanislas, Nolan, Piquionne (Nouble 69), Carew (Ilunga
49)
Subs: Cowler, Noble, Moncur, Hall.

Aldershot Town: Young, Herd, Straker, Jones, Morris, Guttridge, Collins,
Vincenti, Taylor (Rankine 55), Hylton, Rodman
Subs: Worner, Brown, Pulis, Montgomery, Bubb, McGlashan

West Ham United statement
WHUFC.com
The club has responded to today's developments with regard to the Olympic
Stadium
24.08.2011

A West Ham United statement said: "We acknowledge that the final hurdle of a
Judicial Review against London of Borough of Newham and the OPLC in relation
to West Ham United being the preferred bidder for the Olympic Stadium has
been granted on a very narrow basis. "A full hearing will take place on 18
October and we remain confident that Newham and the OPLC will be successful
in defending limited points regarding the £40m loan that would be made to
the Legacy Stadium Partnership. "Separately, and only for clarification as
we have been inundated with inquiries with regard to a Scotland Yard
statement today, we confirm the Metropolitan Police's Economic and
Specialist Crimes Unit is dealing with the serious matter of a private
investigator acting unlawfully, reportedly under instruction by Tottenham
Hotspur. "This is in relation to reported breaches of the Data Protection
Act and Computer Misuse Act as a result of the unlawful acquisition of bank
and telephone records belonging to senior executives at the club and the
OPLC. "We are advised that if found guilty of these crimes, those
responsible can expect to receive custodial sentences. We have full faith in
the police investigation into this matter and shall continue to provide the
fullest of assistance to them. "In response to media inquiries, we can
confirm that West Ham today received a document from Tottenham asking us to
give up our claims against them in relation to the above, in return for
Tottenham withdrawing their judicial review proceedings. West Ham naturally
refused. "We look forward to the 18 October and a successful conclusion
whereby we can deliver the multi-sport legacy that Lord Coe envisaged for
east London and the rest of the nation."

Allardyce left to rue red card
WHUFC.com
The manager said the turning point in the Carling Cup tie was a red card
shown to Callum McNaughton
25.08.2011

Sam Allardyce said the sending off of debutant Callum McNaughton proved
pivotal as West Ham United exited the Carling Cup first round at the hands
of Aldershot Town. The manager was firm in his conviction that the Hammers
would have built on their one-goal lead at the time McNaughton was dismissed
two minutes after the interval for bringing down eventual match-winner Danny
Hylton in a goalscoring opportunity. The Shots were buoyed by the extra-man
advantage and struck twice in the last 13 minutes to win 2-1 and book a
second-round tie with Carlisle United. "We didn't get our first win because
we went down to ten men," said Allardyce. "When you go down to ten men it is
difficult to win a game of football. Even if the opposition are not in the
same division it gives them a massive lift. We were one-nil up and
comfortable and unfortunately a young man who has been given his deut and
doing all right, gets caught out and gets sent-off. "After that they are
going to try and push on. We have to try and defend what we have got because
we were one-man short and we couldn't hold out in the end. They got the win.
It is very disappointing of course but I don't think we would have lost this
game if it had stayed eleven v eleven. I think we would have gone on and won
it."

Allardyce had no complaints about the red card which was cruel luck on the
young central defender on his debut. The manager had rested Robert Green,
James Tomkins, Joey O'Brien, Jack Collison, Mark Noble, Scott Parker and
Carlton Cole and fielded a new-look side, but it was McNaughton and new
recruits George McCartney and John Carew who garnered the most pre-match
attention. "Technically [the referee] has seen it as a goalscoring
opportunity and he was the last defender, he has to do what the rules tell
him and that is give him a red card. That was a huge disappointment for a
young man to be put in that position. He will learn from that."

The manager was positive about the contribution of Junior Stanislas, who
scored with a sweet long-range strike on 16 minutes while also acknowledging
that the run-out would do McCartney and Carew the world of good for the
npower Championship challenge. "We are not quite as big and strong in depth
as people think. Lots of players have left and we are not blessed with lots
of players in the squad so the quicker we get them up to match fitness the
better."

While elimination is disappointing, Allardyce reminded that the likes of
Premier League sides Norwich City, Swansea City, Queen's Park Rangers and
Sunderland had all been similarly frustrated this week - and that with a
full complement of players. Even then, it was not for the want of trying in
the closing stages. "It is always difficult to play out with ten men. We
tried to go for the win in the end by pushing Freddie Sears up top to play
with Frank Nouble because we needed to go and try and win the game. I didn't
want it to go extra time and we got a chance to sneak a late goal with Matt
Taylor but it wasn't to be."

He will hope for better when the Hammers head to Nottingham Forest for a
major league meeting on Sunday afternoon searching for a third successive
league win.

West Ham 1 - 2 Aldershot
Page last updated at 20:45 GMT, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:45 UK
BBC.co.uk

Danny Hylton's 89th-minute winner sent 10-man West Ham crashing out of the
Carling Cup and put League Two side Aldershot into the second round. The
Hammers led through a curling shot from Junior Stanislas but had debutant
Callum McNaughton sent off for a professional foul after the break. That
changed the game and Luke Guttridge equalised from close range after Ruud
Boffin denied Alex Rodman. Hylton snatched victory from 12 yards out after a
goalmouth scramble. That gave Aldershot their first win in this competition
since the club reformed in 1992 and returned to the Football League in 2008.
But for the third time this season West Ham were left to rue conceding an
important late goal at Upton Park. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce made nine
changes from the team that were held at home by Leeds in the Championship on
Sunday and initially his side struggled to settle. It took took a superb
save from Boffin to deny Jake Taylor when he ran through but West Ham
weathered the storm and took the lead with a strike of real quality from
Stanislas. The Shots were given hope when McNaughton scythed down Hylton
after 47 minutes. And Dean Holdsworth's side piled on the pressure before
Guttridge pounced to level with 12 minutes to go, reacting quickly after
Boffin blocked Rodman's shot. With West Ham hanging on, Michael Rankine and
Jermaine McGlashan went close to winning it for Aldershot before Hylton
found the bottom corner with a low angled shot. Matt Taylor came close to
equalising in stoppage time but could only fire into the side netting after
latching on to a flick.

Diop close to West Ham move

West Ham United are understood to be on the verge of signing former
Portsmouth defensive midfielder Papa Boupa Diop on a free transfer. The
33-year-old Senegalese international, who spent a few days at Chadwell Heath
earlier this month is currently a free agent having been released by Greek
club AEK Athens one year into a two-year contract due to 'family issues'.
Despite being part of the side that won the Greek Cup back in April during
his year with AEK, that was one of only 19 appearances by Diop in a season
dogged by injury. The 6'5" midfielder, who began his career with Swiss
minnows Neuchatel Xamax scored his first goal in English football for Fulham
against West Ham back in 2003. He moved to Craven Cottage despite interest
from Manchester United and remained there until 2007 when Portsmouth paid
£3.5million to take him to Fratton Park.

A year after moving to Pompey he was the subject of a £4million bid -
rejected by Portsmouth - from Italian giants AC Milan. However his spell on
the South Coast continued until 2010 when he was sold to AEK for a knockdown
price of just £300,000 in order to remove his considerable salary from the
bankrupt club's wage bill.
Diop was first linked with a move to West Ham during this year's January
transfer window but then-manager Avram Grant's deadline day approach failed
to succeed.

In other transfer news, West Ham are said to have had a £1.5million bid for
MK Dons striker Sam Baldock rejected. The 22-year-old attacker was watched
for a second time earlier in the week by Sam Allardyce, who has seen Baldock
score four goals in his two viewings. The club are likely to return with an
improved bid for a player who they believe possesses considerable potential.

Dad's Army: West Ham's summer signings

West Ham have rejected a request from Tottenham Hotspur to withdraw legal
proceedings against private investigators hired by the North London club to
illegally obtain phone and bank records belonging to club employees. In a
statement issued on whufc.com tonight, West Ham revealed that Spurs - who,
in conjunction with Leyton Orient, were awarded a judicial review into the
decision to award use of the Olympic Stadium to United on Wednesday -
offered to halt the review process in exchange for the Hammers agreeing to
drop their own legal action. But West Ham have reacted furiously at
Tottenham's attempts to prevent the perpetrators from being brought to
justice, insisting that they will continue to assist the Police in
investigating the case.

"We confirm the Metropolitan Police's Economic and Specialist Crimes Unit is
dealing with the serious matter of a private investigator acting unlawfully,
reportedly under instruction by Tottenham Hotspur," read the statement.
"This is in relation to reported breaches of the Data Protection Act and
Computer Misuse Act as a result of the unlawful acquisition of bank and
telephone records belonging to senior executives at the club and the OPLC.
"We are advised that if found guilty of these crimes, those responsible can
expect to receive custodial sentences. We have full faith in the police
investigation into this matter and shall continue to provide the fullest of
assistance to them. "In response to media inquiries, we can confirm that
West Ham today received a document from Tottenham asking us to give up our
claims against them in relation to the above, in return for Tottenham
withdrawing their judicial review proceedings. "West Ham naturally
refused."

Allardyce on... Aldershot Town
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 24th August 2011
By: Staff Writer

Sam Allardyce confessed to being 'disappointed' at dropping out of the
Carling Cup at the first hurdle in tonight's post-match press conference -
but refused to accept that his team would have lost had they kept eleven men
on the pitch...

Sam: Upton Park is meant to be a tough place to come to - but not for the
home manager. You seem to be struggling to get that first win?

Yeah. Well we didn't get our first win today simply because we went down to
ten men. It's that simple. You seem to have forgotten that, did you? You
know what I mean? When you go down to ten men it's very difficult to win a
game of football - or even when you're one-nil up to hang on to it, even if
the opposition are not in the same division as you. It gives them a massive
lift at that time. So we're one-nil up, we're nice and comfortable and then
unfortunately the young man who's been given his debut, is doing alright,
gets caught out and gets sent off.

After that they get the lift, they're going to try and push on and we have
to try and defend what we've got because we're one man short and we couldn't
hold out in the end. So they got the win. I'm very disappointed of course
but I'm not convinced that we'd have lost this game if it'd stayed eleven
versus eleven. I think we'd have gone on and won it in the end.

Was the referee wrong to send him [Callum McNaughton] off?

Not really. I don't think so, by the letter of the law if that's the right
phrase, or technically. He's seen it as a goalscoring opportunity and he
[McNaughton] is the last defender so he has to do what the rules tell him -
and that's give him a red card which is obviously a huge disappointment for
us, as it is for a young man to be put in that position. But he's got to
learn from that of course. He just got caught out around his feet and as a
defender instead of just clearing it he tried to bring it down and play out.
It didn't work and we got punished for that in the end by him getting sent
off.

So, we tried to just hold them out and they got to push the extra man
forward. It's always difficult to get out and play out with ten men, you've
just got the one man up front. In the end we tried to go for the win by
pushing Freddie Sears up top to play with Frank [Nouble] because we needed
to go and try to win the game. I didn't want to go into extra time; we
played three in midfield, two up top. [We] got a chance maybe to just sneak
it when Matt Taylor's header went just wide - but it wasn't to be.

Do you think the West Ham fans were wrong to boo you at the end there?

I don't know, were they booing me?

I think they were booing everything!

[laughs] Well if they're booing because of the way we played that's fine -
if it's eleven versus eleven and we lose to Aldershot. But if we lose with
ten men, it's not like we got beat by MK Dons four-nil or Rochdale at home
two-nil, when it's eleven v eleven. Or Swansea at Shrewsbury, three-one - or
Sunderland at Brighton one-nil. So we would have won the game, I think, if
we had stayed eleven v eleven - and that's the reality. See I live in
reality; most people in football live in perception.

Do you think John Carew needs a few more games before...

There's a lot of our lads who need a few more games. I think it was evident
tonight in terms of match fitness. You know, they've come and joined us
late; this is one of the products of the transfer window and getting
relegated. You have to be patient and wait your time to get the players that
you want.

Unfortunately you get them late into pre-season and then when you get them
late - it's the same with George McCartney - match fitness is not at the
same level as Aldershot's match fitness - and Aldershot's first team is the
team that played tonight. So they've played three or four game, trained
together all pre-season. Our lads tire when that situation happens, that's
why it was such a good game to play them in. But I still think that with
eleven v eleven we'd have won tonight.

[Question from Norwegian media] You said he tired when you went down to ten
men, but how do you think John Carew played in the first half?

Well I think he's feeling his way in because when you come in late to a
pre-season - his is only a couple of weeks [old] - you have some catching up
to do. John more importantly than anyone else, because of his big frame; it
takes a lot longer to get somebody of his size up to match fitness than the
smaller, lighter lads. So we introduced him as a sub on Sunday, he was very,
very effective. We played him from the start tonight to get his match
fitness up. I would have liked him to do better but now he's got another
level of fitness into his games.

We're not quite as big and strong in depth as people think, you know. Lost
and lots of players have left the football club and we're not blessed with
lots and lots of players in our squad at the moment. So the quicker we get
these guys up to match fitness, the better.

You said there were a lot of players knocking on your door saying they
wanted to play; did any of them impress you tonight?

I think Junior Stanislas and his goal particularly - and then he nearly had
another one. After that we were okay without being brilliant today, but like
I said I think we'd got enough to win the game. But it's always the case
when you play in a tie like this. When you look at the amount of clubs that
have lost in the ties that were supposed to win then you get very
disappointed. I would have been bitterly, bitterly disappointed if I'd have
lost this game with eleven, but as it was I think we only lost the game
because we went down to ten men.

What did you make of Ruud Boffin's performance?

I think it was okay? I mean I'll have to re-look at everything when we see
what the situation is tomorrow, I don't think he had too many saves to make.
[He] made one good save in the first half, probably because he should have
just come out and cleared it or caught it, but stepped back. Made a couple
of good saves when we were down to ten men. I'll have to have a look at his
positioning and speak to [goalkeeping coach] Martyn [Margetson] regarding
[whether he] could have done better with the second goal; I'm not too sure.

[Another question from Norwegian media] Will you be including John Carew at
the weekend and will you be recommending him to the national coach? He's
going to try and give you a call about it.

That's about the last thing on my mind! [laughs] So I'll wait to get that
call and I'll make my mind up then! At the moment John, in fitness terms, is
a good sub - as he showed on Sunday, against Leeds United.

Holdsworth on... West Ham United

Aldershot manager and lifelong West Ham fan Dean Holdsworth told tonight's
post-match press conference that any praise for Town's shock 2-1 win at the
Boleyn Gound should be directed towards his players...

Dean: how does that feel?

I'm delighted for the players, for the fans and the club because we've
played extremely well in the last three games and not got our rewards for
that. Tonight we got our rewards for keeping the faith in what I'm asking
them to do. Passing the ball - and we got our rewards for that. So I'm
delighted with the result, I'm delighted with the occasion and I think we
gave a good account of ourselves.

You said it was a patience thing, you've played well. You kept to your
beliefs and it's worked tonight?

It's trust. You have to trust each other with the ball and trust each other
in that we want to pass the ball. We've got our rewards against a very good
side and I'm pleased that West Ham put out a very strong side against us.
That means a lot to me because it gives us the respect that I think my
players earned tonight.

How does it feel being a West Ham fan coming back and winning here?

Ah... [laughs all round] It feels fantastic, it feels like I've done my job
- that's the most important thing. Look - I love coming back here, I don't
need an excuse to come back here. But it gives me no greater pleasure
beating Sam than winning a game of football. I think the world of him; I've
got much admiration and great respect for him. It was about my team tonight
and I can only manage the managables and ask them to do what I ask every
player to do - and that is trust me, get as fit as you possibly can and pass
the ball the best you can.

How does winning a game like that compare to scoring a goal as a player?

It's up there, it's definitely up there. I mean, I think it's the best
feeling I've had since I've been a manager. That means a lot because I've
had a Manager of the Year trophy and a Champions side. It's the best moment
of my managerial career, it makes me want more of it and it spurs me on
because these sort of stadiums, these places, are special. To come here is
special and it's important we bank the memory, do the professional thing
tomorrow and look forward to Saturday.

What have you learnt about your players tonight?

That they've got some steel in them. Because we played well in those three
games - 65 per cent possession on Saturday without a goal. Tonight they've
passed the ball, made angles, how we trained. So I've learnt that they can
score goals!

Have you had a chance to speak to Sam [Allardyce] yet?

Not yet, no. I'll see him in a second.

What did you think of West Ham?

It's West Ham. It's the Academy of football. [laughs] I've got rose-coloured
spectacles [on] when it comes to West Ham I'm afraid. So tonight it was
about my team and that was all I was focused on. Every game we go into we
have to have that belief that we can score and win a game of football. I
wasn't concentrating on West Ham, the surroundings, it didn't mean anything
to me tonight as I was just focused on my job. Tomorrow we'll reflect on a
great victory for this football club and the fans who deserved it. They can
bank it but they can't dwell on it because we've got another game on
Saturday.

It's a special night for the fans; when the club started 20 years ago they
were playing clubs like Hornchurch and Collier Row - to come here and win is
a special night for the club?

Four years ago I was managing Redbridge Football Club. No disrespect to Jim
Chapman, my old Chairman, who was here tonight, but progression - you can't
stand still, you've got to carry on. That's my belief. We all aim for
excellence and it's a special night for the football club because it'll mean
so much to them. Financially we need it and we need to go into the next
round, it's a big bonus for us. But at the end of the day it's a football
match and it's about the football players - and they deserve all the credit
tonight.

What were your thoughts when you went one-nil down?

I thought the referee should have had a yellow card for blocking our lad!
[laughs] I thought that it was a fantastic goal that we conceded. Two
seconds later, one square pass, one turn and a block from the referee and
it's in the back of the net. That shows you how ruthless it is at this
level, I thought it was a fantastic goal. But I wanted them to carry on with
their belief and I was glad when we got to half time at one-nil, we were
under a bit of pressure. We went back out with a swagger again which I'm
asking them to play with, a bit of confidence and I felt we done that
fantastically well second half.

How do you get the players back in the right frame of mind and not to dwell
on this?

They're in tomorrow. They're in, they'll do the right things and we'll all
reflect a bit but we've got to prepare now. The most important thing is
making sure that Aldershot Town is a [Football] League club so it's
important that we go to Oxford refreshed. We'll see what the players' moods
are like, I'm sure it'll be good tomorrow. Then we'll get ready for Saturday
and that's the most important game now.

What does it mean financially?

You'll have to ask my Chairman that! Hopefully it means a lot, so he might
help me! But we were delighted to get West Ham in this round because it
would mean a bit of financial help for the club. Now we're in the next round
we'll hope to get some more out of it!

Shots strike late to shock Hammers
Last updated: 24th August 2011
SSN

West Ham's home woes continued as they suffered a humiliating 2-1 Carling
Cup defeat by League Two Aldershot. For the third match running at Upton
Park, the Hammers let in a late goal and this time Danny Hylton's strike
fired Dean Holdsworth's Shots to a famous win. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce,
who says his players are scared of playing at home, made nine changes for
the rearranged first-round encounter and all looked well when Junior
Stanislas put them ahead in the first half.
The midfielder, making his first start of the season, curled in a superb
effort from 25 yards after quarter of an hour. But another youngster,
defender Callum McNaughton, was sent off just after half-time on his debut
for scything down Hylton, to set up a familiar nervy finish. Aldershot
turned up in east London not having won a League Cup game since they were
reformed in 1992, and without a point or a goal from their last three
matches. So it was perversely inevitable to see them equalise in the 75th
minute when stand-in Hammers keeper Ruud Boffin blocked Alex Rodman's shot
and the rebound landed kindly for Luke Guttridge to tuck away.
With 10-man West Ham on the ropes, Shots subs Michael Rankine and Jermaine
McGlashan put decent chances over the crossbar. And with two minutes of
normal time remaining, a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to Hylton 12
yards out and he drove a low, angled shot past Boffin and into the net to
send the away fans wild.
Matt Taylor came close to snatching an equaliser in stoppage time but his
shot hit the side netting and the Hammers were booed off with their nasty
bout of home-sickness showing no sign of clearing up.

West Ham Accuse Spurs of Olympic Skulduggery
August 25th, 2011 - 12:35 am by Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

This was posted on the West Ham website during the Aldershot match. Maybe it
was meant to distract from the abject performance. Pay particular attention
to the bit highlighted in bold.

A West Ham United statement said: "We acknowledge that the final hurdle of a
Judicial Review against London of Borough of Newham and the OPLC in relation
to West Ham United being the preferred bidder for the Olympic Stadium has
been granted on a very narrow basis. "A full hearing will take place on 18
October and we remain confident that Newham and the OPLC will be successful
in defending limited points regarding the £40m loan that is being made to
the Legacy Stadium Partnership.

Make no mistake about it, this allegation could be incendiary. It would be
nice if West Ham published that document so we could see what lying cheats
the Tottenham board are. Now they have extorted £8 million out of Boris
Johnson to aid them staying at White Hart Lane it is quite clear they have
no intention of maintaining their Olympic bid anyway. It was only ever meant
to be a bargaining chip with Haringey Council and the Mayor's office. The
shame of it is that Boris Johnson has fallen for their blackmail. London
taxpayers should be outraged that money earmarked for the riot clean up is
going to a football club which is about to trouser more than £30 million for
Luca Modric.

Pulis saved me from Hammer horror, admits Stoke new boy Upson
By JANINE SELF

Matthew Upson is determined to help Stoke through to the group stage of the
Europa League after a nightmare year at West Ham. Stoke have a 1-0 lead from
the first leg against Swiss side FC Thun and are expecting a sell-out crowd
at the Britannia Stadium. Upson's move from serial under-achievers to
serial over-achievers has included plenty of contemplation time for the
defender. He admits that it was the search for stability after a chaotic
last year with the Hammers that persuaded him to buy into Stoke boss Tony
Pulis's master plan. So far he has only seen evidence to support that
decision, in stark contrast to his recent West Ham experience. 'There's not
a lot I can look back on in a positive nature over the last year,' said
Upson, 32, who made his debut against Thun last week. 'People will say on
paper that the West Ham squad was better than what they had here last
season. 'But what makes football so interesting and intriguing to everyone
is that it's not always about quality players, is it? Talent is maybe about
15 to 20 per cent in a team. The rest of it is all the other areas:
discipline, organisation, commitment, spirit. 'Stoke proved this with the
success they have had. Was the 80 per cent missing (at West Ham)? Clearly
something was missing or the club wouldn't have got relegated.'

Spurs kill off Great Britain's bid to host 2017 World Athletics
Championships
By CHARLES SALE
Last updated at 12:24 AM on 25th August 2011
Daily Mail

Britain's bid to stage the 2017 World Athletics Championships looks dead in
the water after Spurs and Orient were granted a judicial review into West
Ham's move to the Olympic Stadium. IAAF president Lamine Diack wants all
legal problems resolved before the 2017 vote on November 11. But the review
will only start on October 18 after Lord Justice Collins ruled in the High
Court there is a case for a legal challenge. The Government, who support UK
Athletics' bid, are hoping that Spurs withdraw now that London Mayor Boris
Johnson has offered them funding for the area around a new stadium at White
Hart Lane, following the recent riots. But Spurs need more grants to make
their Northumberland Park development work and Orient owner Barry Hearn
said: 'We intend taking our case to the European Commission if necessary as
well as legal action against the Premier and Football Leagues. 'Our whole
existence depends on it. West Ham taking over the Olympic Stadium with
Newham Council backing is comparable to Tesco setting up next to a local
grocer and receiving a state subsidy to help put the competitor out of
business.'

West Ham reacted to yesterday's legal developments about the Olympic Stadium
by claiming that Tottenham had offered to back down on their challenge for
the stadium if the Hammers would drop a criminal case alleging computer
hacking by a private investigator working on behalf of Spurs. 'West Ham
naturally refused,' said a club statement and vowed to win their argument at
the judicial review hearing into the Olympic Stadium, scheduled for October
18.

West Ham United 1 Aldershot Town 2: match report
By Telegraph staff11:03PM BST 24 Aug 20111 Comment
Telegraph.co.uk

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce blamed rookie Callum McNaughton's red card
for his side's Carling Cup humiliation by Aldershot. The east London side
were booed off after letting in a late goal for the third match running at
Upton Park. Danny Hylton's strike ensured the League Two side reached the
second round for the first time since they reformed in 1992. Allardyce, who
says his players are scared of playing at home, made nine changes including
a debut for 19-year-old centre-half McNaughton. And all looked well when
Junior Stanislas fired them into the lead with a superb curler after a
quarter of an hour. But their night, and in particular McNaughton's, went
sour when he was sent off for scything down Hylton a minute after half-time.
It leaves Allardyce still searching for an elusive first home win as
manager. But he said: "We didn't get our first win because we went down to
10 men, it's as simple as that. "Even if the opposition are not in the same
division it gives them a massive lift. We were nice and comfortable but
unfortunately a young man on his debut gets caught out and gets sent off.
"By the letter of the law the referee has seen it as a goalscoring
opportunity, he's last defender so he has to do what the rules tell him. "In
the end we tried to go for the win, I didn't want extra time. It's not the
same as 11 versus 11. I think we would have won the game."

Aldershot turned up in east London without a point or a goal from their last
three matches. So it was almost inevitable to see them equalise in the 75th
minute when stand-in West Ham keeper Ruud Boffin blocked Alex Rodman's shot
and the rebound landed kindly for Luke Guttridge to tuck away. And with two
minutes of normal time remaining, a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to
Hylton 18 yards out and he drove a low, angled shot past Boffin and into the
net to send the away fans wild.
Aldershot can now add their names to the likes of Grimsby, Northampton,
Wrexham and Oldham as lower-league teams to knock the Hammers out of a cup
on their own turf. The result was sweet for their manager Dean Holdsworth, a
self-confessed West Ham fan who played under Allardyce at Bolton. "I'm
delighted for the players, for the fans and for the club," he said. "West
Ham put a strong side out and we gave a good account of ourselves. I think
the world of Big Sam, but this is about my team tonight. It's the best
feeling I've had since becoming a manager."

West Ham's manager Sam Allardyce pointed the finger at his debutant defender
Callum McNaughton, who was sent off during his side's second-round defeat by
Aldershot on Wednesday night, to explain the result. The Hammers had been
booed off after letting in a late goal for the third match running at Upton
Park, as Danny Hylton's goal ensured the League Two side reached the second
round for the first time since they re-formed in 1992.

Allardyce, who says his players are scared of playing at home, made nine
changes, including a debut for the 19-year-old centre-half McNaughton. And
all looked well when Junior Stanislas fired West Ham into the lead with a
superb curler after 16 minutes. But their night, and in particular
McNaughton's, went sour as he was sent off for scything down Hylton a minute
after half-time.

The defeat leaves Allardyce without a home win as the Hammers manager, but
he said: "We didn't get our first win because we went down to 10 men, it's
as simple as that. Even if the opposition are not in the same division, it
gives them a massive lift. We were nice and comfortable but unfortunately a
young man on his debut gets caught out and gets sent off.

"By the letter of the law, the referee has seen it as a goal-scoring
opportunity – he's last defender so he [the referee] has to do what the
rules tell him. In the end we tried to go for the win – I didn't want
extra-time. It's not the same as 11 versus 11. I think we would have won the
game."

Aldershot arrived in east London without a point or a goal from their
previous three matches, so for West Ham fans there was almost an
inevitability about the equaliser in the 78th minute, when stand-in Hammers
keeper Ruud Boffin blocked Alex Rodman's shot and the rebound landed kindly
for Luke Guttridge to tuck away.

And with a minute of time remaining, after a goalmouth scramble the ball
fall to Hylton 18 yards out and he drove a low, angled shot past Ruud
Boffin.

The result was sweet for Aldershot's manager, Dean Holdsworth, a
self-confessed West Ham fan who played for Allardyce at Bolton. "I'm
delighted for the players, for the fans and for the club," he said.

"West Ham put a strong side out and we gave a good account of ourselves. I
think the world of Big Sam, but this is about my team tonight. It's the best
feeling I've had since becoming a manager."

Police probe Hammers' claim
The Met Police will look into allegations made by West Ham and the Olympic
Park Legacy Company over unlawful obtaining of personal information.

West Ham, who were chosen by the OPLC to move into the Olympic Stadium after
the 2012 Games ahead of Tottenham, allege the police investigation relates
to unlawful activity by a private investigator. The OPLC appointed auditors
Moore Stephens to investigate their own procedures six weeks ago. That
investigation was triggered when Dionne Knight, the OPLC's corporate
services director, was suspended after having worked as a consultant for
West Ham during the bid to move into the £486million stadium. She was
immediately suspended on full pay while any possible conflict of interest
was investigated. She had declared a personal relationship with Ian
Tompkins, a West Ham director, when she started at the OPLC. She only told
the legacy company of her work at the club after a Sunday newspaper claimed
she was on West Ham's payroll. Moore Stephens found that Knight did not have
access to confidential information and did not pass any such information on
to West Ham or anyone else, and the OPLC board recommended that there were
no grounds for reconsidering its recommendation that West Ham's was the
preferred bid.
West Ham say the police are now looking into the conduct of a private
investigator who they allege unlawfully acquired bank and telephone records
belonging to senior executives at the club and the OPLC.

A statement from the Metropolitan Police read: "We can confirm that West Ham
United Football Club and the Olympic Park Legacy Company have made
allegations to the MPS in respect of the unlawful obtaining of personal
information. "These allegations have been assessed and an investigation has
now commenced by officers from the Economic and Specialist Crime Command."

A statement from West Ham read: "We confirm the Metropolitan Police's
Economic and Specialist Crimes Unit is dealing with the serious matter of a
private investigator acting unlawfully. "This is in relation to reported
breaches of the Data Protection Act and Computer Misuse Act as a result of
the unlawful acquisition of bank and telephone records belonging to senior
executives at the club and the OPLC. "We are advised that if found guilty of
these crimes, those responsible can expect to receive custodial sentences.
We have full faith in the police investigation into this matter and shall
continue to provide the fullest of assistance to them."

The news came on the day Judge Mr Justice Collins ruled the High Court
should review decisions made by both the OPLC and Newham Council in the
awarding of the stadium to West Ham after deciding Tottenham had an
"arguable" case. The judge said the West Ham bid approved by the OPLC would
remain on hold until the High Court had decided whether any decisions had
been unlawful. The High Court is scheduled to rule on the case following a
hearing due to start in London on October 18.

League One side Leyton Orient were also given permission to challenge the
decision. Bosses say the stadium is less than two miles from Orient's ground
and any move to the arena by West Ham could "destroy" the club's fan base
and threaten its "very existence". A spokesman for the International
Association of Athletics Federations said their position remained the same
regarding the stadium and the bid for the 2017 World Athletics
Championships. Earlier this month, IAAF president Lamine Diack said ruling
members would be deterred by a lengthy legal dispute and the situation needs
to be resolved before the destination of the 2017 championships is decided.
