'There is something special here'
WHUFC.com
Having played his first game in the claret and blue, Matt Taylor is raring
to go
27.07.2011

Matt Taylor is delighted to be up and running as a West Ham United player.
The midfielder played for an hour in the 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge on
Tuesday night and looked lively throughout. Playing in wide role on the
left, Taylor also gave an early glimpse of his dead-ball prowess with some
telling corners and free-kicks.
"It was good to be out there," he said. "Dagenham are a good team, they made
us work, it was nice to win. "My fitness is fine. I think a majority of
players don't lose too much fitness in the summer so it is not too bad
coming back into it all. I would like to think I am in good condition and it
is about match fitness now."

Taylor is already at home at Chadwell Heath and is a popular presence around
the training ground. "I have had no problem settling in with everyone, it is
not been a problem for me- You do feel like the new boy at school on your
first day, but I feel good here," he added. "I am very happy, I am a
southern lad and it gets me closer to home to my family which is also a big
part of my life. "As I have said, West Ham are a huge club - it is massive
and I just want to be part of it all here. There is something special here
and hopefully we can give these wonderful fans of ours something to cheer
about."

Taylor is confident but not complacent and knows the Hammers will be tested
from the off, with the visit of Cardiff City on Sunday week followed by
tough match after tough match. "We are under no illusions that it will be a
difficult season. There are some big teams in the Championship all vying for
those spots to get into the Premier League. I think if we get a good start
and try to keep going from there, then we have a great chance."

What has impressed Taylor is the quality in the ranks and, with one or two
more new faces to come in at least, he is confident the club will have a
strong season.
"I am confident in the ability in the squad that we can give it a good shot.
The manager still wants to add to the team, so that can only be good and I
think we can have a good go at it all. I am confident for the season ahead."

Moscow 4-2 in Estonia
27.07.2011

West Ham United ended their pre-season trip to Estonia on a high with a 4-2
victory over Russian side Dinamo Moscow. The Hammers produced a fine
all-round display to finish their Tallinn Cup challenge on a high. The three
points gained from Tuesday's success saw West Ham finish second behind the
Estonia Under-19 national team on head-to-head record - the Estonians having
edged out their visitors 2-1 on Sunday. Against Dinamo, West Ham raced into
a two-goal lead through strikes from Danny Potts and Dominic Vose in the
27th and 29th minutes respectively, only for Ivan Solovjev to halve the
deficit three minutes later. The Hammers netted twice in the space of six
minutes early in the second half through Matthias Fanimo and a Jack Powell
penalty. Dinamo scored a consolation goal through Vladimir Sporev before
Potts and Nikita Dergatsov were sent-off with two minutes remaining, but
West Ham held on for a deserved victory. Estonia U19 were beaten 2-0 by PSV
Eindhoven in their final fixture, but the result was not enough to deny them
the title.

Royals ready for Long game

Reading have claimed that they are willing to sell star striker Shane Long -
but only on their terms. The Reading Post reports that the Royals have
received a number of bids for the 24-year-old Irish striker - but as of yet,
not one has come close to their valuation of the player. Speaking in today's
edition of tthe Post, Royals director of football Nicky Hammond said: "We
want Shane at the club, but we have had offers for him. None of those have
been at a level or point where we are prepared to trade. "With every player
there comes a point, but we are nowhere near that point yet. If it got to a
level that we find acceptable, then we would have to sit down and review
it."

West Ham are thought to have had an initial offer of £4million plus add-ons
rejected. A second bid for the highly-rated striker is imminent, although
other clubs - including Premier League side Liverpool - have also expressed
an interest in the player in the last 48 hours.

Dylan diagnosed

West Ham United have confirmed that Academy striker Dylan Tombides is
undergoing treatment for testicular cancer. The 17-year-old Australian was
diagnosed last month whilst on international duty at the FIFA Under 17 World
Cup Finals and immediately flew back to England to begin treatment. Club
doctor Sean Howlett told whufc.com: "Dylan is receiving the best possible
care. All the doctors involved have advised Dylan that he will make a full
recovery in terms of his illness and his ability to return to his football
career. "He is undergoing the standard series of treatments for his
condition which is a course of chemotherapy."

Born in 1994, Tombides joined West Ham at the age of 15 after his family
moved from Australia to England. He signed as a full-time scholar a year ago
and made the first team bench for the first time against Sunderland on the
final day of last season. The disease was also battled - and successfully
overcome - by Hammers legend Bobby Moore in 1964. KUMB.com would like to
wish Dylan a speedy recovery on behalf of all its readers.

Big Sam has hopes for Barrera
Hammers manager tipping Mexico winger to shine
Last Updated: July 27, 2011 8:24pm
SSN

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is confident Mexican Pablo Barrera will enjoy
a more productive second season in English football. The 24-year-old arrived
last summer for a lofty fee, although he failed to make an impact and
eventually slipped out of the first-team picture. Allardyce is now at the
helm and he believes having English lessons will help the winger adapt to
life in England. Barrera impressed for Mexico in this summer's Gold Cup
tournament and Allardyce wants him to replicate that form at Upton Park.

Big things

"He had a very successful tournament for Mexico and I am hoping for big
things from him," he told the Recorder. "It was a sizeable investment to
bring him to the club last summer, but he struggled with the language
barrier and the cultural changes of coming to a new country, so he hasn't
had a very good experience here so far.
"In the end he was lost in the furore of last season because the manager
went for his more experienced players to get them out of trouble, though of
course that didn't work. "I sat down with him and his agent to have a chat
and I think the important thing is to make him as happy here as possible.
"That means English lessons for him and his wife and just helping him to
adapt to life in England a little better. He is a very good player and I
don't see why he can't play well in English football."

Treatment

Meanwhile, the club have revealed that teenage striker Dylan Tombides is
being treated for testicular cancer after he was diagnosed last month.
Tombides was diagnosed while away on international duty with Australia at
the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Mexico. "Dylan is receiving the best possible
care," club doctor Sean Howlett told West Ham's official website. "All the
doctors involved have advised Dylan that he will make a full recovery in
terms of his illness and his ability to return to his football career. "He
is undergoing the standard series of treatments for his condition which is a
course of chemotherapy.

Reading - No serious Long bid
Royals' resolve to keep star striker yet to be tested

Reading insist they are yet to receive a bid anywhere near their valuation
for star striker Shane Long. The Royals are thought to have rejected an
offer from Championship rivals West Ham, believed to total around £7million
with add-ons. The Hammers are widely reported to be ready to come back with
another bid for the 24-year-old, and they could face stiff competition as
Liverpool are reportedly interested in the Republic of Irelandinternational.
But Reading's director of football Nick Hammond has stressed Long will be
staying put if there is not a significant increase to the offers coming in.
"We want Shane at the club, but we have had offers for him," he told the
Reading Post.

Selling point

"None of those have been at a level or point where we are prepared to trade.
"With every player there comes a point, but we are nowhere near that point
yet. "If it got to a level that we find acceptable, then we would have to
sit down and review it."

Sam - No Parker bids
Allardyce does not expect Green to join Baggies
Last Updated: July 27, 2011 11:56am
SSN

Sam Allardyce has revealed that West Ham have still not received any offers
for Scott Parker, while he does not expect Robert Green to join West Brom.
Parker was widely expected to leave the Hammers this summer after starring
in an otherwise dismal 2010/11 campaign that culminated in relegation from
the Premier League.
A number of clubs were thought to be interested in keeping the England
midfielder in the top flight, but nobody has yet stepped up their pursuit.
Asked if there had been any bids for Parker, Allardyce told Sky Sports News:
"None at all." Goalkeeper Green is another player to have been linked with a
move away from Upton Park and West Brom identified him as a possible target
after losing Scott Carson to Bursaspor. Allardyce admits an offer was turned
down but he does not think a transfer will now materialise as he understands
the Baggies could be about to sign Ben Foster from Birmingham. Questioned on
whether there had been any bids for the keeper, Allardyce replied: "I think
we might have had one from West Brom but that was rejected." Asked if the
two clubs might renegotiate, he added: "No, because I think they have taken
Ben Foster haven't they?"

Long pursuit

While Parker and Green have been tipped to depart West Ham before the
transfer window closes, Allardyce is keen to continue strengthening his
squad. Reading striker Shane Long is thought to be on Allardyce's radar but
the manager refused to confirm that an approach had been made, insisting
that he wanted to conduct his business professionally. "I'm not quite sure
in that department. I will speak to the chairman tomorrow and see where we
are," said Allardyce about Long after Tuesday's friendly against Dagenham &
Redbridge. "We would always like a player that is going to score goals and
complement the team, and a player of Shane Long's type, without trying to
suggest I am trying to poach him off Reading, because even an interview can
get you into trouble today by saying if you want a particular player. "I
don't know if he is available. I will find out off the chairman tomorrow. "

Allardyce: 'English lessons could help turn Barrera into West Ham star'

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce has sat down with Pablo Barrera and his agent to
discuss how best to move the winger's career at Upton Park forward. Manager
Sam Allardyce is looking to turn Mexico winger Pablo Barrera into a West Ham
star next year, with a little help from English lessons. The 24-year-old
found life tough in the Premier League last season, but starred for his
country in their Gold Cup success during the summer. And after watching him
for the first time at Wycombe on Saturday, Allardyce is looking for Barrera
to translate that international form into his club displays. "He had a very
successful tournament for Mexico and I am hoping for big things from him,"
Allardyce told the Recorder this week. "He hasn't had a lot of time off so
his fitness is fairly good, though he has a couple of blisters after
Saturday."

Barrera has been linked with Saturday's friendly opponents Real Zaragoza,
but Allardyce is hoping that he can turn things around for the player. "It
was a sizeable investment to bring him to the club last summer, but he
struggled with the language barrier and the cultural changes of coming to a
new country, so he hasn't had a very good experience here so far," said the
manager. "In the end he was lost in the furore of last season because the

and I don't see why he can't play well in English football," concluded the
West Ham boss.

O'Brien winning battle for West Ham contract

Hammers trialist Joey o'Brien is proving his fitness and his talent during
his time at West Ham. Former Bolton Wanderers star Joey O'Brien will find
out next week if he has done enough to earn a deal at West Ham. The
25-year-old filled in at right-back and centre-half during Saturday's 0-0
draw at Wycombe and it is that versatility that may well earn him a deal.
Allardyce has certainly been impressed. "He has done exceptionally well,"
said the manager. "He hasn't really played for two and a half years because
of injury, so to come here and try and win a contract is excellent. From my
point of view on the way he is performing, I would certainly like him."
Midfielder O'Brien played the first half of Tuesday night's friendly clash
at Dagenham & Redbridge, while he will also feature against Real Zaragoza at
Upton Park on Saturday. O'Brien played under Allardyce in his Bolton days
and the manager knows just how much potential he has. "He was one of the
brightest prospects in the Premier League when he first came into the Bolton
team and hopefully he can get back to that sort of form."

Allardyce is eyeing the injury-plagued star. It is understood he is
monitoring developments as to the future of the midfielder who was released
by United at the end of last season.
West Bromwich Albion have been in talks with the 30-year-old and are
believed to be offering a pay-as-you-play deal. Allardyce is viewing a
Hammers future without Scott Parker, who is wanted by Aston Villa. It is
understood he sees Hargreaves as the ideal replacement for Parker provided
his long-term fitness is not an issue.

Reading slap hefty price-tag on Long after rejecting Hammers bid
By talkSPORT
Wednesday, July 27

West Ham have been told to up their bid for Shane Long if they want to win
the race to sign the Reading striker. Sam Allardyce's side has lodged a
£4million bid for the 24-year-old striker but the Royals are understood to
want closer to £7m for their top scorer last season. Sam Allardyce has
admitted he wants to add more players to his squad before the season starts
with an August 6 game against Cardiff . But the former Blackburn boss will
have to increase his offer amid rumours of interest from Newcastle, Everton
and Liverpool in the Republic of Ireland star. Long scored 28 goals in 60
games for the Berkshire club last season but could not stop his side losing
4-2 to Swansea in the Championship play-off final. Reading manager Brian
McDermott has admitted he promised he would not stop the striker moving to a
top-flight club if their promotion bid failed and he is expected to remain
true to his word once the club's valuation is met.

Southampton demand £1m for QPR target Puncheon

decided to demand more for the 27-year-old. Neil Warnock offered centre-back
Kaspars Gorkss plus cash for the versatile player, who had spells at
Millwall and Blackpool last season, but was rebuffed as Saints hold out for
a large, cash-only sale. Millwall and West Ham have also been linked with

Update on Dylan Tombides

Young forward Dylan Tombides, 17, is being treated for testicular cancer in
London
27.07.2011

West Ham United can confirm striker Dylan Tombides is being treated for
testicular cancer. The 17-year-old was diagnosed while away on international
duty last month with Australia at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico. Dylan
immediately returned to England and the club's medical staff arranged for a
further assessment by doctors. He has already started his first course of
chemotherapy at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, which is the standard
treatment for his condition. He has since returned home to rest and will
continue further treatment in the coming weeks. Club doctor Sean Howlett
said: "Dylan is receiving the best possible care. All the doctors involved
have advised Dylan that he will make a full recovery in terms of his illness
and his ability to return to his football career. "He is undergoing the
standard series of treatments for his condition which is a course of

Dylan and his family are in constant contact with his team-mates, coaches
and support staff. The Academy player of the year is also aiming to visit
them as soon as possible, including for the squad's annual team photo.
Academy director Tony Carr said: "Everyone at the club is right behind Dylan
and we all wish him a speedy and healthy recovery. The doctors are all very
positive and he is in the best possible hands. We look forward to seeing him
back with us when he is ready."

Best Wishes to Dylan Tombides
July 27th, 2011 - 10:17 am by Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

I was shocked to read on the club wesbite that Dylan Tombides, West Ham's
promising young striker, is suffering from testicular cancer and is
undergoing chemotherapy. He's only 17.

Most people no doubt think testicular cancer is something that only affects
older men. It isn't. I don't want to sound as if I am preaching, but every
man, no matter what his age, should cop a feel every month and check of
abnormalities.

I don't know if Dylan reads this site, but I am sure he would appreciate all
your good wishes, alongside mine, for a speedy recovery.

Dag & Red 0-1 West Ham United
Carlton Cole scores the only goal as the Hammers secure a deserved
pre-season win at Victoria Road
26.07.2011

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE v WEST HAM UNITED
PRE-SEASON MATCH
TUESDAY 26 JULY 2011
KICK-OFF: 8PM

Final score - Dagenham & Redbridge 0-1 West Ham United

Plenty of positives for Sam Allardyce tonight - Taylor was good on his
debut, Cole got a goal, Green looked in good form and the youngsters
withstood the Daggers' late charge. That's three clean sheets on the trot
now, too. So, with one first-team friendly to come against Spanish side Real
Zaragoza on Saturday, there are reasons for optimism ahead of the season
opener against Cardiff City on Sunday 7 August. Before then, why not tune
into West Ham TV for exclusive highlights and post-match reaction from
tonight's victory?

91 mins - Abdulla fouls Green this time. Green wins a corner off Lletget,
but before it can be taken, referee Mr Woolmer blows for full-time.
90 mins - Not long to go as McNaughton heads clear. Abdulla puts in a superb
tackle on Green and Lletget does well to beat one man and keep possession.
Surely there's not too long to go now.
90 mins - Montano is fouled and West Ham take the free-kick quickly. Hines
picks up possession and shoots powerfully. Shea gathers at the second
attempt.
88 mins - Elito takes on Driver and crosses low, but Green is there again to
collect by his near post. Dagenham are finishing strongly here.
87 mins - Dagenham have a late opportunity courtesy of a free-kick by the
right corner flag. Woodall takes, but his ball in is too high and flies out
for a goal kick. Wally Downes tells his midfielders to concentrate. He
doesn't want West Ham to throw this lead away now.
84 mins - I should point out that Abdulla's handbags were with Dagenham's
Danny Green and not his own goalkeeper! West Ham's Green does well again,
claiming Howell's high free-kick.
83 mins - Green hasn't had much to do, but he's kept his concentration and
makes a fantastic one-handed save from Woodall. That was travelling and the
England goalkeeper did well to push the ball away. Abdulla completes the
clearance before getting embroiled in some handbags with Green.
82 mins - Moncur does well inside his own half to find Hall. He spins and
sends Hines away, but the big defender Swaibi is there to block.
81 mins - West Ham win another corner. Montano crosses and the ball loops
behind on the other side. Corner again. Hall takes left-footed and Shea
collects well in front of his face.
79 mins - More changes... Spence is replaced by Ahmed Abdulla. Dagenham
bring on Reed for Williams.
77 mins - That's encouraging as Hall shows good strength before finding
Montano. He beats one man before finding Lee inside. The midfielder takes a
couple of neat touches before trying to find the Colombian, The pass is cut
out.
74 mins - Lopez is replaced by Robert Hall for the closing stages. West Ham
put together a fluid move as Driver sends Montano away. He beats one and
crosses low towards Hines, but the striker's shot spins just wide of the
post.
73 mins - Driver is into the action straight away. He loses the ball to
Elito, who looks to have space to fashion a shot, but the left-back gets
back well and toes the ball away from the midfielder. West Ham break and
Montano wins a free-kick. The ball drops inside the penalty area to Hines,
but his volley is into the ground and bounces wide of the post.
70 mins - The two Callums, Driver and McNaughton, are on for Brown and Reid
for the final 20 minutes.
69 mins - Hines himself takes the free-kick and the ball deflects behind for
a corner. The ball is headed out of the box, but Moncur is able to work it
to Montano. He cuts inside and hits a powerful shot left-footed, but it's
off-target.
67 mins - This is a very young West Ham team out there at the moment. No
fewer than eight of them have come through the ranks. One of them, Hines,
wins a free-kick a couple of yards outside the Dagenham penalty area.
66 mins - Montano has been superb in pre-season and he's at it again, racing
down the left flank and winning a throw.
64 mins - Ooooh! So close for Elito, who shoots low from 25 yards. The ball
cannons off the pole supporting the net and hits the back of the goal. Some
of the fans think it has gone in, as has the journalist next to me. 'What a
goal!' he exclaims... Goal kick.
62 mins - What a chance that is for Josh Scott! Tomlin's ball eludes Reid
and the No10 is through on goal. He looks up and lets fly, but the ball
zooms past the angle of post and crossbar. The pair are both immediately
substituted, with Scott and Tomlin replaced by Woodall and Green. West Ham
also make two changes, with Taylor and Sears replaced by Montano and
Lletget.
61 mins - Lopez heads the corner clear at the near post. Dagenham regain
possession, but Tomlin's chip is easy for Green to gather.
60 mins - Jordan Brown was down on the floor holding his leg, but before the
physio could get to him, the left-back jumped to his feet. Lucky for West
Ham that he did as he was in the right place to hack Howell's low cross out
for a corner.
59 mins - Good stuff from Spence, who controls on his thigh and finds Hines.
He flicks the ball wide right for Sears, who bursts down the touchline and
hangs up a cross, but it's too close to Shea. Spence looks so composed on
the ball.
56 mins - Cole heads straight to the dressing room and waves to the fans as
he disappears down the tunnel. A left-wing cross comes over and Shea fumbles
it behind. The corner is half-cleared to Moncur, whose shot is charged down.
Dagenham break, but Elito's cross flies behind for a goal kick.
55 mins - Cole is replaced by Lopez. The trialist is tall and looks the
part. Let's see what he has got in his locker.
53 mins - West Ham have started well here. Cole wins another header and
Sears latches on to the loose ball. He finds Taylor, whose cross is cleared.
52 mins - Cole wins a flick-on from Green's long clearance and Sears sprints
to get on the end of it. He does, but he slices his cross behind the goal.
49 mins - The attendance is bigger than the hosts had estimated - 4,016. Not
a bad turn out at all. Meanwhile, Lee gets a low cross in but it's in front
of Sears and the chance goes begging.
48 mins - Hines has gone up front to partner Cole. This is the England
Under-21 striker's first appearance of the pre-season.
46 mins - Daggers get us back up and running for the second half. It'll be
interesting to see how the game flows, as we're likely to have a few more
changes before the game is out.

Four changes from the Hammers at the break. O'Brien, Noble, Collison and
Nouble go off, with Sanchez, Moncur, Olly Lee and Hines on in their places.
Dagenham have replaced goalkeeper Lewington with James Shea and Williams
with Mark Arber.

Half-time score - Dagenham & Redbridge 0-1 West Ham United

46 mins - Into added-time. We have literally a few seconds of it before Mr
Woolmer blows his whistle and that's half-time. Not a bad 45 minutes from
the Hammers, who lead through Cole's fine goal. Dagenham have played their
part too and have come into things. It's all set up for a decent second
half.
44 mins - Tomlin and Howell both shoot from distance, but Reid and Spence
are there to make blocks on the edge of their own penalty area.
42 mins - It's nearly half-time now and I think West Ham will make a few
changes at the break. Before then, Cole gives the ball away and Dagenham
break. Ogogo finds Williams, but his lofted cross is well claimed by Green.
37 mins - Cole is in the mood here. Sears' first touch from Taylor's fine
pass is not great, but Cole wins the ball back, looks up and shoots from all
of 35 yards. The ball flies just wide of the target with Lewington at
full-stretch.
35 mins - GOAL! Cole! Brown's diagonal pass drops over Cole's shoulder
inside the penalty area. The angle looks to be against the striker but he
takes a touch before slotting a shot past the goalkeeper with his right
foot. That's a great finish from the England man.
33 mins - A clearance flies into the stand in front of me, ricochets off the
roof and hits an unfortunate lady square on the head. She is OK to continue
watching the game.
32 mins - Collison would probably be booked for that during the season
itself. The midfielder tries to pick out Nouble, but McCrory cuts his pass
out. The midfielder tries to make amends, but slips over and brings down the
substitute. Referee Woolmer has a quiet word, but no more.
30 mins - O'Brien's long ball forces a corner. A chance for West Ham to get
themselves back into things. Taylor crosses high and Scott Doe heads out for
a throw on the near side. Taylor takes throw and Spence works the ball to
O'Brien, whose header back into the six-yard box is too close to goalkeeper
Lewington.
29 mins - That's nice from John Still's side. Ilesanmi, Elito and Tomlin are
involved before the former crosses towards Josh Scott, but Green is there to
punch powerfully clear.
27 mins - You've got to give the hosts credit. They're on top now as Reid
brings down Howell inside the home half. Dagenham take it short, but
McCrory's cross is high and hanging and an easy catch for Green.
26 mins - That's good play from Williams, who turns well against Spence and
shoots powerfully with his right foot. Thankfully for the Hammers, it's
straight at Green.
24 mins - That opportunity might have been spurned, but it's given Dagenham
a real lift. Tomlin twice has a chance to make something happen inside the
West Ham penalty area, but both times his pass goes astray. The second time,
Green comes to collect and West Ham can build again.
21 mins - Brown is robbed by Williams wide on the Dagenham left. He crosses
low into the box and picks out the unmarked Howell. The No17 is on his own
14 yards from goal, but chooses to shoot first-time. The ball flies miles
over the top. That was the best chance of the game so far.
19 mins - Taylor takes the corner left-footed and Nouble gets his head to it
under pressure from that man Ilesanmi. The striker's effort flies wide of
the far post. Dagenham replace Bingham with Damien McCrory.
18 mins - Bingham had come back on and tried to continue, but he can't carry
on. The midfielder walks off disconsolately. When play starts again, Reid's
superb crossfield pass for Sears is hooked out for a corner by Ilesanmi. The
corner is worked back to Noble, whose cross is headed behind for another
corner.
16 mins - A pause in play as Dagenham midfielder Bingham has some treatment.
It's a right leg injury. Some of West Ham's players take advantage of the
break in play by having a drink on the touchline. It's been pretty much all
West Ham so far, to be honest.
14 mins - Nouble loses possession inside the home penalty area, but runs
back into his own half to recover the ball. Good work ethic from the big
forward.
12 mins - West Ham win another corner. Sears' initial delivery is too high,
but O'Brien recovers possession. Collison's first-time cross looks good, but
it's just too high for Reid and bounces harmlessly away for a throw.
11 mins - A throw is controlled brilliantly by Cole on the turn. He hooks
the ball into the path of Sears, but the No7 misses his kick from eight
yards. That's a chance gone begging for the Hammers. Great play by Cole,
though.
10 mins - Sears has been heavily involved so far. He takes a quick throw to
O'Brien, whose cross lands at the feet of Taylor. He shows quick feet to lay
the ball off to Collison, whose shot is blocked.
8 mins - It's been a lively enough start here in east London. The ground is
nearly full and both sets of fans are making plenty of noise. It makes you
realise just how much you've missed football over the past two months!
5 mins - The West Ham fans behind the goal to my left in the Marcus James
Stand are enjoying themselves, but they are silenced as Ilesanmi beats Sears
and crosses. Green is there to make the catch with the minimum of fuss.
4 mins - Sears wins a corner. Taylor wins the header with his first touch in
a West Ham shirt and Lewington punches clear. West Ham keep up the pressure
and Taylor and Nouble are involved before Collison's shot is deflected wide.
Taylor takes the corner left-footed and Cole flashes a header across the
face of goal and behind.
3 mins - Dagenham attack down their left through full-back Ilesanmi but
Noble is there to head clear. A loose pass falls to Nouble, who makes some
ground but over-hits his pass to Taylor.
1 mins - West Ham kick-off and keep the ball for a short while in midfield
before Spence's crossfield pass flies into the stand.

7.56pm - We're underway...

7.55pm - West Ham captain Mark Noble meets Dagger, who apparently works in
the club shop when he's not doing his day job.

7.52pm - Referee Andy Woolmer blows his whistle and calls the two sets of
players together. It appears we might kick-off a little before 8pm. The
Dagenham &
Redbridge mascot is a large brown dog called Dagger. Well, actually it's a
man dressed as a large brown dog called Dagger. Dagger joins the Dagenham &
Redbridge team in shaking hands with the visiting XI. Dagger apparently
hails from Barking and loves it when his team take the lead.

7.50pm - Fitness coach Eamon Swift gets the starting XI together to do some
stretches as Sam Allardyce emerges from the tunnel dressed in a smart blue
suit. He responds to the cheers with a clap. Swiftly following the manager
is the Dagenham & Redbridge team.

7.45pm - Chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold have taken their seats in
the Main Stand. Meanwhile, West Ham's players have emerged from the tunnel
early for a warm-up. They are wearing their change strip of all blue with
claret hoops.

7.35pm - Delays in the roads surrounding the ground mean the kick-off has
been delayed by 15 minutes to 8pm.

7.30pm - Tony Roberts, the long-serving Dagenham & Redbridge goalkeeper and
all-round good egg is presented to the crowd. He is leaving to work with the
goalkeepers at Arsenal. Roberts gets a good round from the crowd, who he
thanks for the support they have given him over the past eleven years.

7.25pm - Carlton Cole gets a loud cheer after curling a delightful shot into
the top corner. The big striker responds by clapping the fans, who give him
an even bigger cheer!

7.20pm - The hosts tell me they are expecting a crowd of between 3,000 and
4,000 this evening, which is not half bad for a pre-season friendly. The
stands and terraces are filling up fairly quickly around me. I'm told the
Main Stand is completely sold out.

7pm - The team news is in. Matt Taylor makes his debut on the left of a
four-man midfield. Alex Lopez is a Spanish trialist and is named among the
substitutes.

Dagenham & Redbridge: Lewington, Doe, Williams, Scott, Tomlin, Elito,

Good evening and welcome to Victoria Road for tonight's mouth-watering
pre-season match between Dagenham & Redbridge and West Ham United. The game,
of course, pits local rivals against one another and a large crowd is
expected to cheer both teams on. Unfortunately, the two clubs come into the
meeting having been relegated from their respective divisions last season -
the Daggers from League One and the Hammers, of course, from the Premier
League. So, both will be hoping for better fortune in 2011/12. Sam Allardyce
has named a squad mixing youth with experience for the fixture, with new
signing Matt Taylor and England internationals Robert Green and Carlton Cole
lining up alongside a host of promising young professionals. The Hammers
have kept clean sheets in each of their previous two pre-season matches,
winning 1-0 at Danish champions FC Copenhagen six days ago before drawing
0-0 at League One new boys Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.

The Daggers themselves have contested four first-team friendly matches,
defeating Boreham Wood and Mangotsfield United before drawing with Ebbsfleet
United and Leyton Orient. Among John Still's squad are West Ham Academy
graduates Darren Currie and Conor Okus.

Tickets are still available through the turnstiles ahead of the 7.45pm
kick-off, so if you live close enough to get down to Victoria Road, then
please come on down to lend your support to two fine east London clubs.
Seats are priced at £15 Adults, £10 Concessions, £8 Juniors and £2 Under-7s,
while terrace places are priced at £12 Adults, £8 Concessions, £5 Juniors
and £1 Under-7s.

West Ham United midfielder Eoin Wearen played his part as Republic of
Ireland reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship
in Romania.
Wearen was sent on as a 74th-minute substitute as Paul Doolin's side ground
out a 0-0 draw with the host nation, ensuring their progress from Group A
into the last-four. The teenager had not previously featured in the
tournament as Ireland beat Greece before losing to Czech Republic. However,
with the Czechs beating the Greeks, a point was enough for the Irish to go
through as group runners-up. Ireland will face Spain in the semi-finals,
with Czech Republic taking on Serbia in the other tie.

Carlton Cole's first goal of pre-season was enough to earn the Hammers a
narrow victory against neighbours Dagenham & Redbridge at Victoria Road
tonight. The striker, who rejected a £6million move to Stoke last week
latched on to Jordan Brown's cross from the left before firing the ball
beyond Daggers 'keeper Lewington ten minutes ahead of the half time whistle.
West Ham's second victory in three games - which followed the win in Denmark
against Copenhagen last week - was also the fourth consecutive clean sheet
of pre-season; an encouraging sign following the defensive problems of last
season. Although Dagenham had their chances in the match, Rob Green -
playing his second full 90 minutes of pre-season - was on hand to avert any
danger, most notably so when he tipped Woodall's fierce drive wide of his
far post with just seven minutes remaining.
A mostly experimental Hammers XI in the second half - Sam Allardye's side
finished the game with nine players from the club's Academy - failed to
fashion as many chances as the starting team, which included the likes of
Mark Noble, Jack Collison and new signing Matt Taylor, making his debut in
claret and blue. Also on show were triallists Joey O'Brien, who has been
with the club for a month now and SPaniard Alex Lopez. West Ham's final
pre-season fixture takes place this coming weekend when Spanish side Real
Zaragoza visit the Boleyn Ground.

West Ham United: Green, O'Brien, Spence, Reid, Brown, Sears, Collison,
Noble, Taylor, Cole, Nouble.
Subs: Cowler, Lopez, Sanchez, McNaughton, Driver, Lee, Moncur, Lletget,
Hall, Abdulla, Montano, Hines.

Dagenham & Redbridge: Lewington, Doe, Williams, Scott, Tomlin, Elito,

Cole's goal the difference as West Ham edge past Daggers

Dagenham & Redbridge 0 West Ham United 1

Carlton Cole's top class strike gave West Ham the victory at Victoria Road,
but they had to ride their luck after a stern test from a determined
Dagenham side.
It was West Ham's fourth consecutive clean sheet, but it was far from
convincing from the Hammers. They started tentatively, but still could have
gone in front on 11 minutes when Cole crossed for Freddie Sears only for the
Hammer to completely miss his kick. It signalled a frustrating first 20
minutes for West Ham as Dagenham showed they were up for a fight. They
played some lively, passing football in the first half with Sam Williams
testing Rob Green with a low drive, while their best chance came on 21
minutes.

Williams' low cross picked out Luke Howell unmarked in the middle, but with
just Green to beat his nerves got the better of him and he could only blast
over the bar.
Cole showed what a lethal striker he could be for the Hammers this season as
he shot West Ham into the lead on 35 minutes. Jordan Brown's cross from the
left found its way to Cole and the England man turned stylishly before
thumping a low shot across Chris Lewington and into the far corner of the
Daggers' net. He almost added a second two minutes later. The striker
collected the ball 25 yards out and his blast beat the keeper but flew just
wide of the mark. Manager Sam Allardyce opted to go with a two-pronged
attack with Cole being partnered by Frank Nouble, but the youngster failed
to make a real impression on the game in that opening half and was replaced
by Zavon Hines at the break.

It was Hines first outing of pre-season and suggests that he may be ready to
sign a new deal at the club. New signing Matt Taylor had his first game for
the Hammers and showed that he will be a useful man at set-pieces with
pinpoint corners as well as some excellent passing with that trusted left
foot. West Ham trialist striker Alex Lopez was given a chance to show what
he could do on 56 minutes when he replaced Cole, but he showed that was very
little as he was quickly pulled off after just 18 embarrassing minutes.

But it was Dagenham who took the initiative after the break and really
deserved at least a share of the spoils. Howell beat the offside trap on the
hour, but when he crossed low into the box, Jordan Brown was there to hack
the ball to safety. A minute later, Gavin Tomlin's superb pass put Josh
Scott in the clear, but the striker fired wide, before Medy Elito's effort
flew inches wide as Daggers pushed for an equaliser. With time running out,
Jake Reed got the better of Callum McNaughton to get into the box, but his
powerful shot was superbly saved by Green with one hand as the Hammers held
on for another win.

Daggers: Lewington (Shea h/t), Doe (Arber h/t), Williams (Reed 80), Scott
(Woodall 62), Tomlin (Green), Elito, Swaibi, Howell, Ogogo, Bingham (McCrory
19), Ilesanmi.

West Ham: Green, O'Brien (Sanchez h/t), Brown (Driver 70), Reid (McNaughton
70), Spence (Abdullah 80), Sears (Montano 63), Collison (Lee h/t), Noble
(Moncur h/t), Taylor (Lletget 63), Nouble (Hines h/t), Cole (Lopez 56, Hall
74)).

Attendance: 4,016.

West Ham increase their bid for Reading striker Shane Long
Hammers initially offered £5m plus £3m in add-ons
West Brom also interested but yet to make a firm bid
Stuart James
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 26 July 2011 22.01 BST

West Ham United have returned to Reading with an improved bid for Shane Long
after their initial offer was rejected. It is understood that Reading are
looking for a minimum guaranteed payment of £7m for the 24-year-old striker,
which is more than West Ham are willing to hand over for a player who has
only one year remaining on his contract.

West Ham are, however, determined to sign Long and have gone back to Reading
with a new offer that would see them pay a more significant chunk of their
£8m valuation of the striker up front, the remainder to follow in add-ons.

It remains to be seen whether Long and Reading will hold out for a
potentially better offer from a Premier League club; West Bromwich Albion
are among those interested in signing the Republic of Ireland international.

'West Ham are in a mess': QPR new boy Gabbidon fires parting shot at Hammers
By SAMI MOKBEL
Last updated at 10:17 PM on 26th July 2011
Daily Mail

Danny Gabbidon has aimed a blast at West Ham co-owners David Sullivan and
David Gold, branding the club a 'mess'. Gabbidon signed a 12 month deal at
QPR on Monday and is currently in Milano Marittima, Italy, with his new
team-mates for two pre-season matches. The Wales defender endured a torrid
final few months of his career at Upton Park that saw him hit with an FA
misconduct charge for an F-word Twitter rant at Hammers fans and relegation
from the Premier League. Speaking to Sportsmail from Rangers' Italian
training base, Gabbidon apologised for swearing at Hammers supporters on the
popular website. But the 30-year-old, who is expected to play against Cesena
on Wednesday, did not show the same levels of compassion towards Sullivan
and Gold. He said: 'My first two or three years with the club were quite
good and we did quite well. 'But the last couple of years have been
disappointing and a lot of things have gone on.

'I spoke to the club last season about a new contract but they said because
of the position they were in the league they couldn't offer me one. 'There
were a few goings on about whether or not they would let me go - and they
messed me around. 'At the end of the season we went down, so I thought there
was no chance of getting a contract. But then I got a phone call asking me
if I wanted one. 'But then there was nothing else after that. It was just up
and down and I didn't know what was going on. 'It's hard for me to weigh up
the owners come to their decisions. But they are the owners at the end of
the day and know what they are doing - or you hope they know what they are
doing.'Last season there were loads of different things going on - and it
was a mess at times.'I know when they came in they had things to sort out
from the previous owners, but at times last season there were things going
on that you couldn't really understand. 'Hopefully they can learn from there
mistakes.'

On his now infamous Tweet, Gabbidon added: 'You have to be thick skinned to
be a footballer - but you have to be even more thick skinned to be on
Twitter. 'I curbed my tongue for a long time on there - but that was the
final straw. 'I just felt some of the fans were using the site to abuse me
and other players. And it was unjustified stick, too. It got me angry and to
be honest I'm not that kind of bloke. 'When they see that you are on
Twitter, they just use it as an opportunity to voice what ever they want to
say on there. But I'm a human being like every one else. 'They put players
on a pedestal but at the end of the day I'm just doing a job, like anyone
else. 'Some of them got carried away and I vented my anger which was a bit
silly of me. 'Obviously, I regret doing it but I hope the majority of fans
don't think bad of me because I love them and they have always been
brilliant to me. 'Will I go back on Twitter? I don't think so. Someone tried
to get me back on there now I'm at QPR but I don't think so.'

Gabbidon now hopes to write a new chapter in his career after a successful
week-long trial with the West London club. But he admits having to trial had
him feeling like a nervous teenager again, and said: 'I felt a little bit
like an apprentice in his final week before a decision is made. 'It was not
something I've really had to do since I was kid. I felt strange. At first I
admit I thought: "Why do I have to come on trial? Just give me a contract."
'But situations change and sometimes you have to prove yourself again or
people forget what you can do.'

Taylor set for Hammers bow

Matt Taylor could make his West Ham United debut at Dagenham and Redbridge
on Tuesday evening
26.07.2011

Matt Taylor could make his West Ham United debut in the pre-season match at
Dagenham & Redbridge tonight. The Hammers' latest summer recruit trained
with his new team-mates for the first time at Chadwell Heath on Monday and
has been included in Sam Allardyce's squad for the short trip to face the
League Two new boys.
Taylor is in good shape, having been on tour with Bolton Wanderers in the
United States prior to completing his move to the Boleyn Ground on Saturday.
The 29-year-old could be joined in the West Ham selection by a host of
senior first-team players, including England pair Robert Green and Carlton
Cole and fellow full internationals Jack Collison and Winston Reid.
Allardyce (pictured) will be eager for his players to continue their
encouraging pre-season campaign, which has seen his side keep clean sheets
in each of their previous two matches - a 1-0 victory over Danish champions
FC Copenhagen followed by Saturday's goalless draw at League One side
Wycombe Wanderers. The Daggers themselves have contested four first-team
friendly matches, defeating Boreham Wood and Mangotsfield United before
drawing with Ebbsfleet United and Leyton Orient. Among John Still's squad
are West Ham Academy graduates Darren Currie and Conor Okus. Tickets will be
available at Victoria Road on the night, with kick-off at 7.45pm. A large
crowd is expected, so supporters are urged to get to the stadium early to
avoid disappointment.

Seats are priced at £15 Adults, £10 Concessions, £8 Juniors and £2 Under-7s,
while terrace places are priced at £12 Adults, £8 Concessions, £5 Juniors
and £1 Under-7s. Seven pairs of Ambulant/Carer tickets are available to

Freddie knows the goal

Wherever he is asked to play in the attack, Frederic Piquionne is determined
to hit the target
26.07.2011

Frederic Piquionne is determined to be the man to shoot West Ham United back
to the Premier League. The French striker has been a regular presence in Sam
Allardyce's summer plans, even if the goals have not yet matched his
enterprising play. Whether in a front three with two wide men or in a more
conventional strike pairing, Piquionne is determined to prove his worth in
the promotion push. The striker will next be in action with Saturday's home
match with Real Zaragoza and said such encounters were first and foremost
about sharpness. Everything else, he is sure, will follow on from there
especially as "the manager wants us to play good football and we have good
players in the team". He added: "We are in pre-season and it is most
important to have a good physical condition for the games. All the players
have a common goal. We need to get straight back to the Premier League."

To achieve that ambition, Piquionne is banking on finding the net on a
regular basis. He is focused fully on achieving his aim in the first league
match of the season on Sunday week at home to Cardiff City. "My head is
ready for Cardiff," he added. "I am at the club to score. The team need to
go up next season and I want to score a lot of goals for West Ham to make it
happen."

New deal imminent for JC

West Ham midfielder Jack Collison looks set to sign a new contract
extention. The Welsh international is set to be handed a bumper new deal -
despite having two years of his existing deal to run and having missed
virtually all of last season through injury. John Mac, Collison's agent,
told SkySports this morning: "Talks are ongoing and we are hoping we will
have a successful resolution soon. Jack is enjoying pre-season and he has
been impressed with what Sam Allardyce has planned at West Ham. "He has also
been impressed by the signings of Kevin Nolan and Matt Taylor and he is
looking forward to the start of the season." Collison signed his first pro
contract with West Ham in 2007. A year later he signed a five-year deal with
the club tying him to east London until 2013. Talking about that new deal
back in 2008, Collison - who made just four appearances last season - said:
"I am delighted that the club wants me here for a long time. I now want to
claim a regular place in the starting eleven if I can, and really push on."

West Ham's bid for Reading striker Shane Long has been rejected. It was
reported this morning that the Hammers had placed an £5million (plus
add-ons) bid for the Irish interntional. Whilst KUMB understands that the
figure quoted is slightly higher than the actual offer, it has been been
confirmed that the Royals have rejected West Ham's opening gambit. The
24-year-old has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs during the
summer, with West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle quoted as potential suitors
most often. However neither club has made their move yet, granting West Ham
the opportunity to get their bid in first. United are considered likely to
improve their bid, having seen moves for Jay Bothroyd and DJ Campbell fail

Hammers plan double swoop

West Ham have launched a £9million double raid for Reading's Shane Long and
Southampton's Jason Puncheon. This morning's Guardian reports that the
Hammers have made an £8million bid - which equates to £5million up front
plus add-ons - for Reading's Irish international striker Shane Long, who has
just 12 months of his current contract remaining.

Meanwhile the Hammers are also reported to have placed a bid in the region
of £750,000 for Southampton winger Puncheon, who spent part of last season
on loan at Millwall.

Long, 24, began his career with Cork City but was snapped up by Reading in
2005 since when he has scored 44 goals in 173 appearances (79 of which came
from the bench). But it was for his goalscoring exploits last season
(2010/11) that a number of clubs became interested in acquiring his
services, with the 21-times capped international scoring a most impressive
28 goals in 60 appearances.

Croydon-born wide-man Puncheon, 25, began his career with Wimbledon before
dropping out of league football to feature for Fisher Athletic and Lewes.
After relatively quiet spells at both Barnet and Plymouth he was snapped up
by Southampton where he became a first team regular under Alan Pardew.
However erratic form saw him lose his place to 17-year-old starlet Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain and in January of this year Puncheon spent a month on
loan at Millwall, before joining Premier League Blackpool for the second
half of the season.

season against Cardiff on 7th August, the centre-back has admitted he is
still reeling from the drop into the Championship. But Tomkins is eager for
the experience to be short-lived and thinks relegation should be used as a
motivation for West Ham, who are now managed by Sam Allardyce. The
22-year-old told London24: "It is still hard to get over it now really.
"Realising that we are in the Championship this year really hurts, it hurts
me as much as it hurts anyone else. "But we are looking to bounce straight
back up now and relegation is something in the past." Tomkins added: "We are
under a new manager now and hopefully we can start on a new era and we can
go on from here and get straight back up."

Skysports.com understands Jack Collison is hoping to agree a new deal at
West Ham to stay at Upton Park. As revealed by skysports.com last month,
West Ham have entered into talks with the Wales international about securing
his long-term future. Collison still has two years to run on his current

Royals reject Hammers bid
Long bid comes up short

Skysports.com understands Reading have rejected a bid from West Ham for
Shane Long. The Hammers are believed to have tabled a firm offer for Long as
they look to win the race for the in-demand striker. A host of Premier
League clubs are thought to be chasing the Republic of Ireland international
following his goalscoring exploits at the Madejski Stadium last season. The
likes of West Brom, Newcastle, Everton and Newcastle have all been credited
with an interest in Long this summer.
The Royals are willing to let Long, who is entering the final year of his
contract, move on for the right price after they failed to secure promotion
to the Premier League last term.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is in the market for a new striker and he had
targeted a move for Long in a bid to steal a march on his rivals for the
Irishman. The Hammers are thought to have offered £5million rising to
£8million with add-ons for the 24-year-old. However, Reading are understood
to have turned down the offer with the club preferring to sell him to a
Premier League side rather than a Championship rival. It remains to be seen
if West Ham will come back in with an improved bid and the news is sure to
spark Long's suitors into action for the former Cork man.

capable of securing an immediate return to the Premier League and believes
Reading striker Shane Long could be the player that fires the Hammers to
promotion. According to reports in todays press, the east London club have
tabled a bid of £8million for the talented young striker who last season
scored 23 league goals as Reading lost in the play-ofdf finals to Swansea.
Reading boss Brian McDermott was determined to hold on to the striker after
losing Matt Mills to Leicester City for £4.5m, but the clubs resolve will be
tested with the significant offer for a player that has just one year left
on his contract. The 24-year-old first moved to the Royals in 2005 when the
club signed Long and fellow Irishman Kevin Doyle from Cork City. Since
joining Reading the forward has firmly established himself as an important
member of the first team and last season was outstanding as the club just
missed out o promotion to the Premier League.

It is believed that West Ham have made an initial cash offer of £5m with an
extra £3m in add-ons that they hope will convince Reading to sell the
striker rather than lose him on a free at the end of the season. McDermott
has stated that he does not want to lose the forward to another Championship
club but would not block a move to a Premier League side. "I'm sure Shane
will be linked with lots of clubs. That's how it is," McDermott told the
Reading Post. "He won't go to another Championship club, but if a Premier
League club comes in, I won't stand in his way. "With Shane, there's no
difference to him. He loves Reading, he loves the fans, loves the staff and
in an ideal scenario he would be playing for us in the Premier League.
"Another ideal scenario would be to keep him at Reading in this league, but
life is not always ideal. I never say never."

Newcastle and West Brom have shown an interest in Long over the summer but
neither has come in with a concrete offer while West Ham are currently
viewed as the bookies favourites to gain promotions. West Ham have already
signed Premier League pair Kevin Nolan and Matthew Taylor and are confident
that they can convince Long to join the duo at Upton Park.

West Ham United table £8million bid for Reading FC's Long
By Jonny Fordham

West Ham United have tabled a bid worth £8million for Reading striker Shane
Long, according to reports. Royals boss Brian McDermott told the Reading
Post two weeks ago that the 24-year-old would not be sold to a Championship
rival after seeing Matt Mills move to Leicester City for £4.5million. And
now it look's like Reading's resolve will be tested with Long out of
contract and free to move on for nothing in 12-months time. It is believed
Hammers have put together a bid worth £5million up front with an extra
£3million in add-ons. Speaking to the Post during the pre-season tour of
Slovenia earlier this month, McDermott said: "I'm sure Shane will be linked
with lots of clubs. That's how it is. "He won't go to another Championship
club, but if a Premier League club comes in, I won't stand in his way. "With
Shane, there's no difference to him. He loves Reading, he loves the fans,
loves the staff and in an ideal scenario he would be playing for us in the
Premier League.
"Another ideal scenario would be to keep him at Reading in this league, but
life is not always ideal. I never say never."

West Bromwich Albion would be Long's preferred destination right now, but
they have yet to put their money where their mouth is. Alan Pardew's
Newcastle United are also in the hunt, by they are still confident of
landing Melvut Erdinc from PSG.

Bad news for Long as Hammers launch bid
joe.ie

Shane Long's hopes of making a move to the Premier League have taken a knock
after relegated West Ham offered to stump up £8m for his services. Reading
star Long is expected to quit the Madejski Stadium this summer, with West
Bromwich Albion the Premier League side said to have been leading the race
for his signature.
Newcastle have also been linked with the Tipperary lad but his hopes of
securing a move to top flight have been dealt a blow following West Ham's
big-money bid late on Monday night. Long has 12 months remaining on his
current contract, and an initial bid of £5m from West Ham, with the
remaining £3m to follow pending certain performance-related clauses, will be
very tempting to Reading. Should the Royals' decision-makers accept the bid
– and it would be a surprise if they don't – then Long faces an agonizing
choice of whether to move to another second tier club, or hold out for an
improved bid from one of the Premier League sides keen on his particular
never-give-a-defender-a-rest brand of forward play.

Collison keen on Hammers stay

Jack Collison's agent is confident an agreement is near to tie the
midfielder to a new long-term contract at West Ham. Collison still has two
years to run on his current deal, but West Ham are keen to extend it to ward
off ward off potential suitors. A number of Premier League clubs, including
Stoke and West Brom, are thought to be monitoring Collison's situation at
Upton Park with the player returning to fitness at the back end of last
season. Collinson's agent, John Mac, has confirmed talks are ongoing and
that the player has been impressed by new Hammers boss Sam Allardyce. "Talks
over Jack's contract are ongoing and we are hoping we will have a successful
resolution soon," Mac told skysports.com. "Jack is enjoying pre-season and

Relegation still painful for West Ham defender

Hammers centre half James Tomkins is hoping to learn from the bitter
experience of relegation and become a mainstay in the West Ham team this
term. West Ham defender James Tomkins has still not recovered from the
nightmare of last season's relegation – but he is determined to learn enough
from the experience to get the club back in the top flight at the first time
of asking. The 22-year-old centre half featured in 19 of West Ham's Premier
League games last season, but could not prevent the team from finishing
rock-bottom. It is something that still hurts. "It is still hard to get over
it now really," confessed the former West Ham Academy boy after Saturday's
0-0 pre-season friendly draw with Wycombe Wanderers. "Realising that we are
in the Championship this year really hurts, it hurts me as much as it hurts
anyone else. "But we are looking to bounce straight back up now and
relegation is something in the past."

The Hammers stumbled to relegation under manager Avram Grant and Tomkins is
still in the dark as to what exactly went wrong. "We had good players so it
hard to put a finger on why we didn't stay up," he said. "There were a lot
of games we drew that we should have won. It all goes down to those sort of
games really, but it is hard to pinpoint."

With the loss of defenders Matty Upson, Manuel Da Costa and Danny Gabbidon,
Tomkins will become an important player in the West Ham squad this season,
something he has happy to take on. "I think I've matured a lot recently," he
said. "I learned a lot from players like Matty Upson and Danny Gabbidon, who
have great experience, so hopefully I can step up this year and be a more
experienced head this time round."

Tomkins had to be the experienced man at Wycombe as he was partnered by
another youngster in Jordan Spence in the central of defence. "I've played
with a lot of different people already in this pre-season," he said. "Jordan
moved into centre back with no trouble. He coped really well with it and he
looks a good right back and now a centre back too. "I'm still only 22, but
I'm hoping I can use the experience I have had over the last couple of
years. "We have been through some hard times, but I feel that I have grown
both as a player and a person, so hopefully I can do that. "We are under a
new manager now and hopefully we can start on a new era now and we can go on
from here and get straight back up."

Tomkins, who now has 75 games in claret and blue under his belt, has
certainly noticed the difference in the camp since Sam Allardyce arrived as
manager and he is looking forward to the new season kicking-off. "He comes
with a good record, he is a bubbly character, energetic and enthusiastic
which are all good attributes," said Tomkins. "I'm looking forward to
working under him, learning and improving as a player myself. "I think we
need to look at getting straight back up. With the players we still have at
the club and the young lads that are coming in, hopefully with that
combination we can go straight back up, but obviously that starts with
Cardiff."

With only four recognised central defenders at the club, Tomkins is likely
to be first choice against the Bluebirds, but he is taking nothing for
granted. "We need to start well because this is a hard league to get out of,
but hopefully we can get straight back where the club belong and I can play
a big part in that."

Baggies to miss out on Collison
by Setanta Staff , 26 July 2011

West Brom's bid to sign Jack Collison from West Ham looks as though it has
failed after the player's agent revealed he is set to stay. The Baggies had
been strongly linked with a move for the Wales international following the
Hammers relegation to the Championship, with reports indicating the
midfielder was extremely keen to stay in the Premier League. With West Ham
keen to reduce their wage bill it had been reported that a decent offer from
West Brom would persuade them to sell the 22-year-old Wales man. However,
Collison is now thought to be close to signing a new contract with the
Hammers to end any interest, his agent claiming the midfielder had been
impressed with new boss Sam Allardyce since he took over. "Talks over Jack's
contract are ongoing and we are hoping we will have a successful resolution
soon," John Mac told skysports.com. "Jack is enjoying pre-season and he has
been impressed with what Sam Allardyce has planned at West Ham. "He has also

Hammers offer £5m for Shane Long

West Ham have made a £5million bid for Reading's Shane Long. Manager Sam
Allardyce has prioritised signing a striker with Long, 24, high on his
wanted list. The Republic of Ireland international, who is in the final year
of his contract at Reading, has expressed a wish to play in the Premier
League and attracted interest from West Brom. That has not dissuaded West
Ham from testing the water with a £5m bid, with a further £3m in add-ons.
The Upton Park club have already spent more than £6m this summer, with Kevin
Nolan signing from Newcastle for £4m and Matt Taylor arriving from Bolton
last week in a £2.2m deal. West Ham are still waiting, however, for firm
offers for their three England internationals -goalkeeper Robert Green,
midfield star Scott Parker and striker Carlton Cole

West Ham are weighing up a second bid for Reading striker Shane Long. The
Royals are believed to have turned down an initial offer of around £7million
with add-ons, for the 24-year-old. Long is in demand this summer after
hitting 25 goals last term. West Ham will face competition with Reading
having told him he can join a Barclays Premier League club, if the price is
right, after they failed to gain promotion. Top-flight sides West Bromwich,
Newcastle and Everton have been linked with moves for Long but Hammers boss
Sam Allardyce is hoping to persuade the Irishman to stay in the Championship
for one more season to spearhead their promotion bid. West Ham's
willingness to spend could also indicate some of their big earners may be on
their way out, with Stoke reportedly keen to resurrect their move for
Carlton Cole and Scott Parker still a target for Premier League clubs.

Three out of four aint bad

Three in four season ticket holders have renewed their seats for the
forthcoming Championship season. With West Ham facing a season in the
nation's second flight, season ticket numbers were expected to fall
dramatically. However a recent KUMB poll suggests that a whisker over 75 per
cent of existing season ticket holders booked their spaces ahead of the
club's extended deadline. With more than 15,000 supporters already signed
up, according to a club source, the club are well on course to beat the
number of season tickets sold last time United were relegated eight years
ago (some 17,000). However the figure of 24,000 tickets sold for last year's
Premier League season is extremely unlikely to be matched barring a late,
unexpected clamour for tickets. It had been feared that a good many of
supporters would refrain from renewing this year as a result of a string of
discounted tickets offered by the club and agency Viagogo last season.
However that particular concern appears to have failed to materialise.

Long-term Hammers target DJ Campbell is set to sign for Queens Park Rangers.
Reports this afternoon suggest that the Blackpool striker, who scored 13
goals for the relegated club in the Premier League last season is set to
move to Loftus Road withink the next 48 hours. That news will come as a
major blow to West Ham, who have been tracking the striker for some
considerable time. United met Campbell's minimum fee release clause of
£1.25million several weeks ago and had been hoping that the former
Birmingham and Brentford striker would join the Hammers in the Championship.
However Campbell had made it clear earlier in pre-season that his preferred
choice would be to remain in the Premier League - and it appears that he has
managed to secure his move of choice. Meanwhile Danny Gabbidon, who left
West Ham at the end of his contract last month has also secured a move to
the Premier League's new boys. Gabbidon has signed a one-year deal with
Rangers.
The Welsh centre half becomes the second ex-Hammer to make the switch from
east to west London this summer, hot on the heels of fellow perennial
sicknote Kieron Dyer.

Pair launch Puncheon bids
QPR and West Ham come in for out-of-favour Saints wideman

Skysports.com understands QPR and West Ham have both made bids for Jason
Puncheon. The 25-year-old Southampton winger is widely expected to be on the
move this summer having fallen out of favour at St Mary's. He spent the
second half of last season on loan to Blackpool and went on to score three
goals in 11 appearances for the Seasiders, but was unable to prevent Ian
Holloway's team being relegated from the Premier League. The former MK Dons,
Barnet and Plymouth player was linked with Portsmouth earlier this month,
but Pompey manager Steve Cotterill denied reports that he had made an
enquiry. But it now appears Puncheon could possibly make a quick-fire return
to the top flight with newly promoted QPR, who are keen to bolster their
ranks for the season ahead. And new West Ham boss Sam Allardyce seems to
have also targeted the wideman as he seeks to guide the Hammers back to the
Premier League at the first attempt.

Neil Warnock. Warnock has handed Gabbidon a one-year deal with the option of
another 12 months, as he sees the experienced defender as a key addition to
his squad. Gabbidon is QPR's third free transfer signing of the summer
following the arrivals of Jay Bothroyd and Kieron Dyer.

Big Sam warns Spurs over star
No bids on the table for Parker

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has warned Tottenham not to wait too long if
they want to sign Scott Parker. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has never
hidden his interest in Parker, but conceded a deal could be difficult due to
the finances involved. Parker is expected to leave Upton Park this summer as
he seeks to stay in the Premier League following West Ham's relegation to
the Championship. However, Allardyce insists if Spurs leave it until the
last minute to swoop for Parker they will be left disappointed.

Worry

"It is a worry that Spurs might wait until the last minute because it would
be the wrong time to do it," said Allardyce. "There are no bids for Scott at
the moment so we continue to improve him as if he is going to start the
season in our team, until such time as somebody bids the right money that
would be acceptable to the club."
"So if Harry is listening, or anyone at Tottenham, watch out, don't be
waiting that long because you won't be able to do it." West Ham expect
Parker to move on before the close of the transfer window, but Allardyce
claims there are no bids on the table for the England international.

No bids

"There are no bids for Scott at the moment so we continue to improve him as
if he is going to start the season in our team, until such time as somebody
bids the right money that would be acceptable to the club," added Allardyce.
"It's like that for every player at ever club. There is speculation and that
will continue right through to the 31st of August unfortunately, but that is
the way it is. "We need to deal with it, it is very, very difficult indeed,
but there is not a lot we can do about it."

QPR snap up Danny Gabbidon
Published: 25 Jul 2011
The Sun

DANNY GABBIDON has joined Premier League newcomers QPR on a free transfer.
Gabbidon, 31, was without a club after his West Ham contract expired earlier
this summer. The Welsh international had been training with Neil Warnock's
men in Cornwall and featured in three friendlies before being handed a
one-year deal. Gabbidon said: "I'm delighted to be here. It's a good club
and hopefully I can learn more about it in the coming weeks. "I had a good
week with the lads in Cornwall and I'm pleased to have signed. "My agent
spoke to the manager and he said to come down and train for a week, so it
went from there. "Warnock was a big part in me joining the club — I've been
quite impressed by him. "He's straight talking, which I like. If you're
doing something right I think he'll be the first to tell you and, if you're
not, he'll be the first to tell you again. "As a player, that's what you
want. I was impressed with what he had to say about the club and what he
wants to do this season." Warnock added: "I think he's just the type of
player we need — a quality defender with plenty of experience. "I hope I can
reinvigorate his career because a couple of years ago I thought he was one
of the best defenders in the country."

Gabbidon knows all about the harsh reality of relegation after seeing the
Hammers slip out of the top flight last season. But he believes QPR have
every chance of avoiding an instant return to the Championship. The
centre-back said: "I think we can do well. The lads showed last season that
they're already confident and hungry to do well in the Premier League.
"Hopefully I can bring experience to the table having played in the top
flight for a number of years. "I know the ins and outs of the league and
what's required. "There are a lot of good players here already but
hopefully, with my ability, I can add something to the team."

Nolan desperate for West Ham to get back where they belong
London 24
Dave Evans, West Ham Correspondent
Monday, July 25, 2011
11:00 AM

New Hammers midfielder Kevin Nolan is slowly returning to fitness in time
for the new season at Upton Park. West Ham captain-in-waiting Kevin Nolan
says he can't wait for the new season to start so he begin the task of
getting the Hammers and their fans back where they belong – in the Premier
League. The 29-year-old Liverpudlian played his first 90 minutes in claret
and blue at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday and he admits that he is slowly
getting back to something like fitness after a long break from football. "I
was just happy to get 90 minutes, it was my first of pre-season," admitted
Nolan, who was plucked from Premier League side Newcastle United in the
summer in a £3million deal. "I had an hour in Copenhagen the other day, so
just to get the 90 today helps with the old muscles and the sharpness coming
in."

Nolan missed the last two weeks of Newcastle's Premier league campaign with
injury and he admitted he was feeling the rust when he first returned to
training with West Ham. "My first 45 minutes against Basel I thought I was
going to die," laughed Nolan. "I hadn't done anything for eight and a half
weeks, I had about three football sessions so I really felt it. "To be where
I am now, 10 or 11 days later, it is a big thumbs up to the medical team, to
the staff and the fitness coaches and how they are working me, so hopefully
come two weeks time I will be hoping to be near enough there to be ready.
"You are never 100 per cent when you get back there, but hopefully I will be
at the top end, so we will be ready for Cardiff and get off to a bright
start."

Nolan played alongside footballer of the year Scott Parker at Wycombe on
Saturday, a mouthwatering prospect for all West Ham fans and the pair
eventually stamped their mark on the game, though it did take a while as
Nolan freely admits. "Against Wycombe I think the start was a bit lacklustre
for us, but I think throughout we made sure we were solid, we didn't concede
again which is a pleasing thing and as the game wore on I think we were the
stronger of the two sides which is very pleasing."

Nolan went close on a couple of occasions on Saturday, and West Ham fans are
only too aware from past experience, that the combative midfielder has a
habit of notching the goals. He scored 30 in 91 appearances for Newcastle
United and boasts a superb record against the Hammers of four goals both for
the Magpies and for Bolton. "I've played at Upton Park for a number of years
and scored a few goals against them and hopefully I will score a lot more
goals for them," said Nolan. "It has always been a nice ground for me, so
hopefully it will be in the future. "Against Wycombe on another day I could
have had a couple of goals and I'm putting that down to the fact that it was
my first 90 minutes. I said to the gaffer, 'wait till we get to competitive
games, that's when you can have a go at me over that'."

The competitive games are just around the corner and Nolan is already
champing at the bit. "I'm just really looking forward to the season now and
getting my teeth into it," he said. "I've moved down here, got my flat, so I
am right in the thick of things and looking forward to it." Nolan may have
moved from the north east to east London, but for him one thing is the same
and that is the passion of the fans. "This is a fantastic club," he said.
"There was never a doubt for me once I knew that West Ham were in for me and
all the personal terms were sorted. It was just a fantastic move for me.
"The passion and everything at the club is amazing. I think everyone I've
seen, every taxi driver, everyone is a West Ham supporter. "At Newcastle I
had a fantastic two and a half years. I was delighted to be captain there
and now to come here and you have got a set of fans who are exactly the
same. "I'm just hoping now that I can be as successful here as I was there
and make sure that I can help get this team and these supporters back where
they belong."

Stoke are poised to resurrect their interest in West Ham star Carlton Cole.
It looked as though the £6million move for the England striker had fallen
through last week, with the Potters unwilling to meet the former Chelsea
forward's wage demands. Cole is thought to be on around £40,000 at Upton
Park, and is also rumoured to be on a hefty goal bonus, and is unwilling to
take a signifcant pay cut. But Britannia Stadium boss Tony Pulis, who has
said he wants to sign five new players before the start of the season, is
considering a second approach to the 27-year-old as he looks to bolster his
striking options.

New signing Kevin Nolan insists he had no doubts about dropping down to the
Championship with West Ham. The midfielder moved from Newcastle United this
summer and completed his first 90 minutes as captain for the Hammers in
their 0-0 draw at Wycombe on Saturday. Nolan said: "West Ham are a fantastic
club. Once I knew they were in for me there was never any doubt from me. It
was just a fantastic move for me. I've played here for a number of years and
scored a few goals against them. I hope to score a lot more goals for them
now. It was always a nice ground for me so hopefully it will be for me now.
"Everyone I've seen, even taxi drivers, has been a West Ham supporter. I
don't think I've met anyone else so I'm just really looking forward to
getting on with the season now and getting my teeth into it. I've moved down
here and got my flat so I'm looking forward to it. "I had a fantastic two
and a half years at Newcastle. The fans were terrific and I was delighted to
be captain there. "To come here, I'm just hoping I can be as successful here
as what I was there and make sure we get this team and supporters back to

to be in the Premier League."

West Bromwich Albion are edging closer to signing Ben Foster on loan from
Birmingham City but are running the risk of missing out on another of their
targets after West Ham United entered the race to sign Shane Long by making
a £8m bid for the highly rated Reading striker. Roy Hodgson, the Albion
manager, is an admirer of Long and would like to add him to his squad but
the Midlands club have failed to turn their interest in the Republic of
Ireland international into a concrete bid. Several other Premier League
clubs, including Newcastle United, are also tracking Long, who scored 21
goals in the Championship last season. It is understood that West Ham's
offer values Long at about £5m, with the remaining £3m to follow in add-ons.
Reading are almost resigned to losing the 24-year-old, who has 12 months
remaining on his contract.

Hammers edged out in Estonia

West Ham United U18s were beaten 2-1 by Estonia U19s in their second Tallinn
Cup fixture
24.07.2011

West Ham United Under-18s were narrowly beaten by the Estonian U19 national
team in the second of their three fixtures at the Tallinn Cup. Having beaten
Dutch side PSV Eindhoven 1-0 in their opening match on Friday, the Hammers
went down to a 2-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon, dropping them to second in
the four-team table.
However, with PSV and Dinamo Moscow drawing 1-1 in Sunday's other game, West
Ham know a victory over the Russians in their final match on Tuesday could
be enough to see them lift the trophy. Concentrating on Sunday's match, a
minute of silence was held in memory of the victims of the events in Oslo
before the Hammers went ahead through a goal from England U17 defender Leo
Chambers (pictured) after 26 minutes. However, things would turn sour in the
second half as Kieran Sadlier was sent-off with 16 minutes remaining.
Moments later, Hannes Annier equalised and Martin Kase put the hosts in
front before Chambers and Estonia substitute Trevor Ehli were both shown the
red card with five minutes to go. A crowd of 725 fans were on hand to watch
the action.

West Ham will take on Dinamo Moscow and PSV will tackle the Estonians at the
A.Le Coq Arena on Tuesday. Full details from Tallinn will appear on

Allardyce hails Taylor arrival
Hammers boss delighted with capture of former Bolton man
Last Updated: July 24, 2011 4:44pm

Sam Allardyce believes West Ham's acquisition of Matt Taylor is another
statement of their intent. The Hammers are in the process of piecing
together a squad they hope will be good enough to secure an immediate return
to the Premier League. Kevin Nolan's arrival earlier in the summer from
Newcastle suggested the capital club mean business, with the midfielder able
to boast considerable top-flight experience. Abdoulaye Faye has also taken a
step down into the Championship after previously turning out for Bolton,
Newcastle and Stoke. Allardyce has now drafted in another proven performer
at Premier League level in the shape of the versatile Taylor.

Desire

He worked with the left-sided operator at Bolton and believes the
29-year-old will be a useful addition to the Upton Park ranks. "I have known
Matt for a long time in the Premier League," said Allardyce. "It shows our
desire to get a group of players together that want to get us back to the
Premier League as quickly as possible.
"It is about the club being big enough for them to come down and want to
play football and try to get us back into the Premier League."

What is Needed in the Summer Transfer Window?
July 25th, 2011 - 12:41 am by S J Chandos
West Ham Till I Die

All Hammers fans will have their own views on the positions that Sam
Allardyce needs to prioritise in the remainder of the summer transfer
window. And this is my appraisal. The strongest area of the squad is
undoubtedly midfield. We have quality and strength-in depth there, even if
Scott Parker departs. We also have width and pace, with the likes of Sears,
Barrera, Stanislas, Montano, Taylor and Tombides. At a push, we could
possibly do with a defensive midfielder who can anchor the midfield and
break up opposition attacks. Obviously, Parker would probably adopt that
role, with Nolan playing further forward. But if Parker leaves we may need a
midfield addition.

Hence, perhaps, Allardyce's reported interest in Owen Hargreaves? There is
no doubt that Hargreaves is a fine holding midfielder and but for his
serious knee injury, he would probably still but a Manchester Utd player.
However is he worth the gamble, given the long standing nature of his knee
problem? We could try to sign him on a 'pay as you play' deal, that would
safeguard the club against unnecessary expenditure on the player's wages, if
he subsequently broke down. But do we really need to sign another player
with such a poor injury record? Or does his class make the risk worthwhile?
That's if we can even persuade him to drop down in to the second tier in the
first place?

In terms of the goalkeeper position, we currently have Green, Boffin and
Stech. If Green stays, then we do not need any additions. But if he is
sold, then Allardyce has to decide if either Stech or Boffin are ready to be
our new No. 1 or whether another keeper needs to be recruited. At
full-back, it looks like I might have been right about Allardyce seeking to
bring Herita Illunga 'in from the cold.' With Illunga, Brown and Matt
Taylor all able to cover the position, we should be fine there. But we
definitely need additional cover at right-back. Jordan Spence will probably
start there, but it makes sense to bring in a good quality addition.
Surely, we are not going to go into the new season with Faubert as cover?
At Centre back, we currently have Tomkins, Faye, Reid, Spence and Fry. Will
that be sufficient? Possibly, if Spence or Fry are ready, for instance, to
partner Tomkins if Faye and Reid are injured or suspended. Personally, I
would bring in another experienced centre-half as extra insurance. What is
certain is that we need to quickly forge a solid and durable new defensive
unit. We cannot afford a repeat of the defensive shambles that we witnessed
last season.

However, it is the balance of the current strikeforce that worries me most
at the moment. Yes, we will be well provided with target men, if we retain
Cole, Piquionne and Nouble. Yet, the problem is that neither Cole nor
Piquionne are particularly prolific goal scorers, at least not at PL level
(whether that changes in the Championship remains to be seen). Nouble came
to West Ham with a big reputation as a goal scoring prospect at youth level,
but he has yet to build upon that. Personally, I feel that the three
strikers are all a bit too similiar. What we need is an out-and-out
finisher that can play off of them.

As I have stated before, my preference would be to sign shaun Long from
Reading. He would not be cheap, at c£7m, but he is the type of technically
impressive finisher that we need. He scored 20 plus goals in last season's
Chamnpionship and he would fit in well at West Ham. The acquisition of a 20
goal a season striker could be the difference between automatic promotion
and the play-offs. So, a c.£7m outlay, to help secure a £40m a year return
to the PL, makes perfect sense. Sometimes you just need to bit the bullet
and do the deal! WBA are also after him, so the lure of PL football may
prove too strong. But if we do not go for Long, we do need to get someone
else in to play off the target men.

All things being equal, I would go for one new striker and push young Robert
Hall in to first team contention. Hall has done very well in pre-season and
is probably ready to step up within the squad. Indeed, I have high hopes
that Lee, Montano, Tombides and Hall will all play roles in the forthcoming
campaign, in what should be a crucial season in their longer-term
development. We definitely needed to bring in the experience of the likes
of Nolan and Taylor, but hopefully the youngsters will also make their mark
this season. That includes the more experienced younger players, like
Stanislas and Sears. Nothing would please me more than to see those two
finally fulfilling their potential.

Particularly Sears, who has done very well on the right-flank, but the
quality of that finish against FC Copenhagen reminds us that he could yet
mature into a pacy central striker.

There is also the option of exploiting the loan market. Sam Allardyce has
indicated that he will probably use loanees to add extra depth to the squad,
if it proves necessary. There is no doubt that skillful use of the loan
market can be a key strategy, it is just a matter of identifying the players
who are available and who can add something different to our existing squad.
It is ok signing the right youngsters on loan, from the likes of Man Utd and
Arsenal, as long as it is not to the detriment of our own Academy prospects.
But, if we go down this road, I would much prefer to see one or two Freddie
Kanoute or Micheal Hughes type loan deals (if they are possible in the
Championship?) for more experienced players, perhaps with a future option to
buy.

Finally, it is good to hear Hammers players talking about the new aura of
positivity at the club. Sam Allardyce is a very good mativator and there is
no doubt that togetherness and a strong team spirit can pay real dividends
in terms of results. Hopefully, we will see a very different West Ham Utd
FC take the field next season. Organised, disciplined, fit and committed;
as well as skillful. Allardyce has once again stressed the difficulty of
putting together a new squad and getting the team to gel immediately.
Hopefully, we will get some positive early results and that will give us the
breathing space and confidence to further build the coherence and
effectiveness of the team unit.

Let's cut Sam Allardyce some slack in recognition of the scale of the job
that he has taken on and the fact that there may well be an initial period
of adjustment. We should not turn against him if we do not get off to an
absolute flyer on 7 August, after all, even in the brilliant 1981 promotion
year, we lost the opening home match against Luton Town! But that was only
a wobble and we went on the assert our class and never really looked back,
thereafter.

Time running out for Parker deal, West Ham boss Allardyce tells Spurs
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has warned Tottenham that if they want to sign
Scott Parker they should make a move soon. 'It is a worry that Spurs might
wait until the last minute,' said Allardyce. 'So if Harry (Redknapp) is
listening, or anyone at Tottenham, watch out, don't be waiting that long
because you won't be able to do it.'

Allardyce warns Spurs to act quickly over West Ham star Parker

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has issued a warning to Harry Redknapp and
Tottenham Hotspur – if you want Scott Parker, then you better bid for him
quickly.
The Hammers boss confirmed that there were no bids for the current
footballer of the year, who played 75 minutes in Saturday's 0-0 pre-season
friendly with Wycombe Wanderers. But he is only too aware of the tendency of
Tottenham manager Redknapp to swoop for players at the last minute in the
transfer window and he says that this time it would be a mistake. "It is a
worry that Spurs might wait until the last minute because it would be the
wrong time to do it," said Allardyce.
"If they want to come and do it then, I will be telling the chairmen it is
the most expensive time and not the cheapest. "So if Harry is listening, or
anyone at Tottenham, watch out, don't be waiting that long because you won't
be able to do it."

The West Ham fans at Wycombe constantly chanted the name of Parker as gave
him a rousing reception when he was substituted, perhaps in hope that the
England international will still be in claret and blue when the transfer
window shuts. Allardyce though is philosophical. "There are no bids for
Scott at the moment so we continue to improve him as if he is going to start
the season in our team, until such time as somebody bids the right money
that would be acceptable to the club," he said. "It's like that for every
player at ever club. There is speculation and that will continue right
through to the 31st of August unfortunately, but that is the way it is.
"We need to deal with it, it is very, very difficult indeed, but there is
not a lot we can do about it."
