Switzerland - Day One

The first-team squad enjoyed an packed opening day their pre-season training
camp
09.07.2011

West Ham United kicked-off their pre-season training camp in Switzerland
with a busy and varied day of training on Saturday. The 26-strong first-team
squad were up early for a session in the swimming pool before heading off to
a nearby training complex for activation and an intensive hour-long football
session. After a break for lunch and an afternoon of well-earned rest, the
squad reassembled and returned to the training centre for another hour of
circuit training and specific strength and conditioning work. The likes of
Robert Green, Scott Parker, new boys Kevin Nolan and Abdoulaye Faye and
trialists Joey O'Brien and Hernani da Rosa were all put through their paces
by manager Sam Allardyce, assistant manager Neil McDonald and the backroom
staff. "Linking the staff and the integration of all the departments are
very important at this time of year - the medical, sport science and
football departments have created a very good working programme to encourage
the football and fitness of the players in the build up for the start of our
new season," said the manager. "We have had three very good sessions today
which we will review at the end of the evening. All the players appear to
have come through their sessions today and there are no injuries, which is
one of the most important things in our pre-season. "We are in a very
tranquil spot in the mountains of Switzerland. We're training at altitude
which is always good for the condition of the players. What little downtime
the players have, there are good facilities at the hotel, a fantastic lake,
outdoor swimming pool and a mini golf course where they can enjoy each
other's company. "This helps with the very important matter of team bonding
that is vital."

Supporters should note that both whufc.com and West Ham TV will keep you
updated regularly with all the news from Switzerland, including live text
updates from the Uhren Cup fixtures with BSC Young Boys and FC Basel on
Monday and Wednesday evenings respectively.

Stanislas staking his claim
WHUFC.com
Junior Stanislas has returned to fitness and is targeting a regular place in
Sam Allardyce's starting XI
09.07.2011

Junior Stanislas is approaching full fitness and targeting a regular
first-team place in the new season. Speaking from West Ham United's
pre-season training camp in Switzerland, the 21-year-old is eager to put a
year of injury and frustration behind him. Stanislas underwent hernia
surgery in January, ending his involvement in what had, to that point, been
an encouraging campaign for the versatile forward. Having returned to
reserve-team action in April, he told West Ham TV he is now ready to stake
his claim for a spot in Sam Allardyce's starting XI. "I'd say I'm 90 per
cent fit," he revealed. "I still get little niggles and stuff, but at the
moment it seems to be getting stronger and stronger every day, so it's all
good. "The last few seasons I've been in and out and last season I had my
injury problems, so this season I just want to play as many games as I can
and hopefully be a regular in the side."

A popular figure with Hammers supporters, Stanislas has netted important
goals in the past, most notably in the Carling Cup victory over Millwall in
August 2009.
With an npower Championship meeting with The Lions slated for 17 September,
the south London-born player is naturally keen to be fit and on form for
that fixture.
Bearing that in mind, Stanislas gave his all during Saturday's intensive
training session, where the outfield players took part in a series of
keep-ball exercises under the watchful eyes of Allardyce and assistant
manager Neil McDonald. "We got up very early this morning and had a little
pool session and stretch-off to loosen up, had a bit of breakfast and then
it was straight down to the training pitch," he added. "We got worked quite
hard but it's all good fitness work under the belt ready for the season.
"Obviously it's a lot more enjoyable [to use a ball in training] than doing
just straight running, but we did a lot of that before we left to come out
here, so we're still getting the fitness work done, but this time with a
ball. "Pre-season is about getting the work done for the beginning of the
season and all through the season. The harder you work, the easier fitness
will be when we're playing in the season."

Squad start in Switzerland

The club's six-day training camp began in bright sunshine in Switzerland on
Saturday
09.07.2011

West Ham United kicked-off their pre-season training camp in Switzerland in
bright sunshine. The Hammers arrived at their base near Bern late on Friday
evening before eating a welcome meal and heading for bed. The 26-man squad
rose early on Saturday morning for a group session in the swimming pool to
loosen up their joints and muscles. After a healthy breakfast the players
and staff, led by manager Sam Allardyce, boarded the team coach for the
short journey to the picturesque training complex. The whole squad,
including England trio Robert Green, Scott Parker and Carlton Cole, got
themselves up to with an activation session in the gymnasium before heading
outside on to the pristine pitches. There, under a warm sun and blue skies,
the players were put through their paces by Allardyce, assistant manager
Neil McDonald and members of the medicine and sport science department. The
Hammers will train at least twice a day throughout their stay in Switzerland
as the manager gets his players up to speed ahead of the start of the
2011/12 npower Championship campaign on 7 August. As part of his
preparations, Allardyce will send his players into action for the first time
at the Uhren Cup pre-season competition. West Ham will take on Swiss Super
League side BSC Young Boys in Grenchen on Monday evening before tackling
reigning Swiss champions FC Basel on Wednesday.

Big year for Brown
WHUFC.com
Jordan Brown is eager to make up for lost time and is hoping to impress Sam
Allardyce in pre-season
09.07.2011

Jordan Brown is fighting fit and ready for the biggest season of his career.
Still only 19, the Hammers left-back has put to paper on a new contract and
is eager to make up for lost time. Last season, Brown was on a roll and
looking set to stake a claim for the left-back berth only for disaster to
strike with a thigh injury in December. "I was doing well," Brown told West
Ham TV. "Just as I started to be doing well until Christmas and just as I
started to be involved with the first team, I got injured in a training
session and it just went on and on. "I never played again until the last
friendly of the season when I got the last half hour. I missed quite a bit
of it. Maybe it happened for a reason, you never know."

Brown is refusing to dwell on the disappointment of just seven reserve-team
appearances last season, nor the hurt of watching the club he has
represented since he was seven being relegated to the Championship. There is
a new start for all at Chadwell Heath and Brown wants 2011/12 to be a season
to remember - with the first step being travelling with the first-team squad
to Switzerland this weekend in the hope of competing with Herita Ilunga for
the left-back berth. "I am looking forward to it. It is a big thing for me
to sign again. It is another big step towards where I want to be and
hopefully I will make the most of it."

The youngster, who hails from Benfleet in south Essex, added: "It is going
to be a new start for everyone. The manager is not going to know us young
boys and we have to see who can get in. "For the younger players there will
be more games and the coaches will need more bodies I want to do as much as
I can in pre-season and get as many games as I can. "This season could be
the one. I told my family that this could be the biggest season I have ever
had, and I need to show what I can do. It can only take one game and you
have to take your chance when it comes."

Talking of families, Brown said he would not be contemplating the chance he
has now if it was not for their superb support. "I wouldn't have been able
to do it. I had to get to training every day before I was driving. To have
them around and be able to talk to them before and after games, it helps a
lot."

Tottenham implicated in phone records theft
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 10th July 2011
By: Staff Writer

The Olympic Park Legacy Company have called in Police to investigate claims
that its chief executive had his telephone records accessed by unauthorised
agents.
Last week West Ham United contacted the Police following claims in the
Sunday Times that the personal records of its employees had been
surreptitiously gained by corporate investigators acting on behalf of
Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham's rivals in the battle to win tenancy of the
£500million stadium post-2012 Olympic games.
And less than seven days later, the OPLC have confirmed that they too have
contacted the authorities after suspecting foul play. According to today's
edition of the Times, the OPLC called in police when they discovered that
records of phone calls made by chief executive Andrew Altman had been
acquired by unauthorised agents.
It is further reported that call records belonging to West Ham's vice-chair
Karren Brady were also accessed by the corporate sleuths, who had been
employed by Tottenham to covertly investigate both the OPLC voting committee
and employees of the club.

The revelation that Spurs have allowed themselves to become embroiled in a
row regarding the unlawful access of personal phone records could not have
come at a worse time for the north London club, following the national
outrage this week over the News of the World's phone-tapping confessions - a
scandal that led to the sudden demise of the 168-year-old newspaper.

In last week's edition the Sunday Times reported that the OPLC director at
the centre of the case, Dionne Knight, has been spied on at her home by
Tottenham's agents. Ms Knight lives with her 14-year-old daughter. Ms Knight
- and West Ham United's Olympic Director Ian Tompkins - were both suspended
from their respective organisations last week following the revelation that
she had been temporarily employed by West Ham as a consultant. The Times
report today that West Ham had been assured by Mr Tompkins that the OPLC had
authorised Ms Knight's employment; the OPLC dispute that version of events
and continue to insist that they were unaware Ms Knight had undertaken work
for the club.

Masters bid ends in defeat

West Ham United's vets went out of the London Masters at the first stage
tonight. Despite not losing a game, the unlucky Hammers failed to progress
to the final by virtue of goal difference. West Ham opened their campaign
with a 3-2 win over Chelsea that came courtesy of goals from Kevin Horlock,
Steve Lomas and a last-minute Ian Pearce winner. Chelsea were then beaten
4-3 by QPR in the next Group B fixture. That result meant that West Ham
needed to secure a win against reigning London Masters champions QPR in
order to progress to the final - and they were but one minute away from
doing just that. Despite falling 3-1 behind early doors (Gallen (2) and
Meaker for QPR, Matt Holland for West Ham) United rallied to pull the game
back to 3-3 through goals from John Moncur and Steve Lomas. With two minutes
of play remaining, captain Lomas put the Irons ahead for the first time in
the tie with a header - a goal that put West Ham top of the goup again.
However an equaliser for QPR - with little more than 60 seconds left on the
clock - earned Rangers a vital point, and one that saw them through to the
final on goals scored.

In Group A, unfancied Watford upset the odds to send Arsenal and Tottenham
packing. The final was won by the Hornets who beat QPR 3-2.

Contract talks for Collison
West Ham midfielder not paying attention to transfer talk

Jack Collison has confirmed he is in discussions over a new deal at West Ham
after being linked with a move elsewhere this summer. Skysports.com revealed
late last month that Collison had entered into talks with the Championship
club regarding an extension. An agreement has yet to be struck and reports
suggest West Brom have now expressed an interest in signing the midfielder.
Collison is aware of the transfer talk but is staying focused on trying to
reach an accord with the Hammers. "It's flattering but I'm in negotiations
over a contract at the moment," he said in The Sun about the link to West
Brom. "Let's see how that goes."

Stoke in talks with duo
Potters keen to land West Ham striker and former Spurs defender
Last Updated: July 9, 2011 8:34pm

Chairman Peter Coates has revealed that Stoke City are in negotations with
Carlton Cole and Jonathan Woodgate about potential moves. West Ham striker
Cole has been linked with a move to The Potters since the Hammers'
relegation from the Premier League and it is understood that a deal for the
27-year-old could be completed for an initial fee of around £4.5 million.
Cole joined fellow England internationals Rob Green and Scott Parker as part
of Sam Allardyce's 26-man squad that travelled to Switzerland on Friday for
a six-day training camp.

Progress

Coates said: "Cole's a player the club is interested in and Tony Pulis has
liked him for a long time, we think he's a very good player. "It's not done
and dusted but it's work in progress. "He's a player the club is interested
in and Tony Pulis has liked him for a long time, we think he's a very good
player." Meanwhile, Coates has admitted free agent Woodgate could well be a
target for the club, with a view to a play-per-play deal. The former Real
Madrid and Tottenham defender's career has been plagued by injury. Coates
added: "We're working on that and it's something we're prepared to do. "It's
work in progress but we're taking a risk. We hope we'll be able to do
something."

Carlton Cole's transfer to Stoke still looks a long way off after he flew
out to Switzerland with the rest of the West Ham squad for a six-day
training camp.
Widespread reports on Saturday suggested England striker Cole was on the
verge of a £4.5 million move to the Potters, with the fee potentially rising
to £6 million depending on performances. Stoke are thought to have already
had one bid rejected for Cole, who looks set to follow Demba Ba out of the
Upton Park exit door following the club's relegation from the Premier
League. Tony Pulis is also thought to be interested in Birmingham striker
Cameron Jerome as he looks to bolster Stoke's striking power ahead of the
new season. Cole's fellow England internationals Scott Parker and Robert
Green, targets for Aston Villa and West Brom respectively, also made the
trip to Switzerland.

West Ham's Allardyce blames Thatcher for UK soccer's decline
By Mike Collett
14:53 BST, Sat 9 Jul 2011

LONDON, July 9 Reuters - West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has blamed
former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for "killing football" and
creating a modern-day generation of unfit, obese children in the United
Kingdom. Allardyce says that all UK sports, not just soccer, are suffering
because of policies adopted by Thatcher's Conservative governments
throughout the 1980s. In a scathing attack in The Sun newspaper on Saturday,
Allardyce said: "Since Margaret Thatcher stopped teachers being paid extra
money for coaching sports after school, all sporting activities have
diminished on a competitive basis. "Kids are now more obese and unfit than
ever. All the prime young athletes we were ready to develop just aren't
there, so we get a lesser quality of player. "It has not just undermined our
game, it has undermined many sports in this country and created an unhealthy
child. Thatcher killed football, there is no doubt about it."

A recent report stated that one in three children in Britain are obese or
overweight and that 32 per cent of children play less than an hour of sport
a week. In the last 20 years, around 5,000 school playing fields have been
sold off or built over as England's men's national team have continually
floundered in attempts to repeat their 1966 World Cup triumph.

Allardyce, a keen student of sporting education, continued: "Look at how
little kids do to what I did. I was a 200 metres runner, a 4x400m relay
runner and a triple jumper. "I was a batsman in cricket, a freestyler in
swimming and swam for the town. I did the pommel horse in gymnastics and I
was really good on the trampoline, as well as being a footballer. "Kids
don't do any of that now. All of that sporting activity allowed me to play
in the top division in this country."

Allardyce, who recently took over at English second division side West Ham,
maintains the consequences of Thatcher's policies now mean clubs are having
to sign up children at increasingly young ages to ensure they have
opportunities to flourish. "This was a working-class game but it's only at
private schools where the children get the sports opportunities I had -- and
even then a lot of them don't play football, it's mainly rugby," said the
ex-Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers boss. "Despite putting in place all
sorts of advanced academy systems at clubs we are only producing half the
players the school system used to."

The Football Association estimates it takes 10,000 hours of training and
education from the age of about seven or eight to be able to be good enough
to play professional football -- accepting a child has the talent to begin
with. Allardyce added: "Even a club like Manchester United can only provide
4,000 hours at the moment. It's hard to do more because parents have to
drive their kids there four nights a week as well as on a Sunday. "Until we
wake up and realise how important school sport is to our kids we will never
repair the damage," he concluded.

Potters target Cole and look to take a risk with Woodgate

Statement on Brescia Calcio
WHUFC.com
The club have contacted the Italian FA and FIFA with regard to non-payment of a transfer fee instalment
08.07.2011

West Ham United have asked the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to suspend Alessandro Diamanti's player registration with Brescia Calcio spa with immediate effect. The Italian international was transferred to Brescia in August 2010 for €2.2m. Due to the failure of Brescia to pay the latest instalment fee, West Ham have asked the FIGC to suspend the player's registration and requested that the national association and FIFA impose sporting sanctions until the matter is resolved.
Diamanti spent a year at West Ham after signing on a five-year contract from AS Livorno Calcio in August 2009. Following his return to his homeland with Brescia, he scored six goals in 31 Serie A appearances and earned his first Italy cap.

Driver on track to succeed
WHUFC.com
Callum Driver is on course for a first-team debut after signing his first professional contract
08.07.2011

Callum Driver continued his trip down the road to West Ham United's first team by signing his first professional contract with the club. The attack-minded full-back enjoyed an outstanding 2010/11 season, catching the eye with his buccaneering play, committed tackling and accurate crossing and shooting. Driver topped off a superb campaign by scoring an impressive individual goal in a Barclays Premier Reserve League draw at Sunderland. However, it was his overall contribution and positive attitude that the 18-year-old was rewarded with a professional deal. "I'm very pleased," he said. "I've worked quite hard for it so I'm pleased to have the chance to be a professional and I'm planning to push on from here. "My fitness got better during the second half of the season, so as my fitness got better so my game got better, so the second part of the season was a lot better."

Driver is one of a host of young Academy graduates eager to impress new manager Sam Allardyce and his backroom staff during the pre-season. With the likes of Lars Jacobsen and Wayne Bridge having departed the Boleyn Ground this summer, the south London native knows he has an opportunity to push his claims for a place in the first-team squad sooner rather than later. "It's a new start. He wants to get us back up, so that's the aim. "I signed for the club when I was 12 so I've been here for six years now and am just about to start my seventh season. "Obviously I want to play for West Ham's first team. That was my aim from the start, so it's one step on the ladder and I've got to push on from here."

Having seen Jordan Spence progress at the tail-end of last season, Driver is keen to follow the likes of the former reserve-team captain and Australia Under-17 striker Dylan Tombides into the first-team squad. "It's good to have your mates around because they give you more help. We know how each other plays, so it can help you in different ways as well. "A lot of people - my Dad, Mum and my girlfriend and her family have helped me a lot and given me support. "We've all got a lot to look forward to this season."

Carr on World Cup duo
WHUFC.com
Blair Turgott and Dylan Tombides will have learned much this summer, according to Tony Carr
08.07.2011

Tony Carr is looking forward to welcoming back attacking duo Blair Turgott and Dylan Tombides to the club after their FIFA U-17 World Cup exertions. Both players impressed in the Hammers U18 squad last season to earn their place at the Mexico finals, with Turgott reaching the quarter-finals with England and Tombides showing his worth for Australia in a competitive group. Each had the thrill of scoring on a major international stage, and Carr is convinced it will stand the pair in good stead. "They both got great experience," he told whufc.com. "For young lads of their age to play at a World Cup at that level is invaluable experience. "We are looking forward to them coming back and showing what they have learned and seeing how it has rubbed off on them. I am sure the club will see the benefit of it this season.
"It is important to remember they are still learning and still have a long way to go. At the end of the day they have to come back and perform for the club. They mustn't get carried away and keep feet on the ground."

On Turgott, Carr said he was particularly proud to see him take part in a memorable last-16 win against Argentina before their exit at the hands of Germany. "Blair had a great run with England. They got to the quarter-finals, the business end of the competition having done very well to beat Argentina. "He is an attacking midfielder who plays in the wide areas and can also play off a front player, he is exciting running with the ball, he likes to drive at the opposition. He is very good at that. He comes in off the line and creates problems."

There was similar praise for Tombides, although Carr acknowledged that his red card against Uzbekistan was something that would also prove a positive learning experience in terms of coping with discipline. "Dylan equipped himself very well although the frustration that led to a red card was a little back mark against him. He will learn from that and be better for it."

Carr reminded that Jordan Spence had demonstrated how to progress from the youth set-up and the "great experience" of a FIFA U-17 World Cup to the first-team picture. Both youngsters would have gained much as they look to push on through the development ranks at the Boleyn and into Sam Allardyce's thoughts. "At the end of the day, international football is much different to club football, it is a slower tempo at times, it is a much more technical game, more thought-provoking. In that respect if they have both learned something about those aspects and their positions they are going to see the benefits."

Sears special on West Ham TV
WHUFC.com
Freddie Sears is feeling fit and eager to impress as the squad head for their Swiss training camp
08.07.2011

Pre-season training may be hard work, but Freddie Sears is relishing the challenge of getting himself fit for the 2011/12 campaign. The homegrown Hammer impressed during the latter half of last season, catching the eye with a succession of confident performances on the right side of midfield or a three-man attack. Now 21, Sears is ready to kick-on again and make his mark in the npower Championship under new manager Sam Allardyce. He headed out with the rest of the squad - including two triallists, the versatile Irish international Joey O'Brien and Brazilian-born defender Hernani da Rosa - to Switzerland on Friday full of confidence of making an impression in pre-season. "It's been good," he told West Ham TV. "Obviously it's not the thing you look forward to coming back and doing but you know you have got to do it and get it done and it will come in handy later in the season. "Most people go away in the summer and do a bit of work and have come in and the boys look quite sharp, to be fair. "We've done a lot of running and now we're just itching to get into the football games now, really."

Sears is one of a 25-man squad involved in the week-long pre-season training camp in Switzerland. The trip will see the players put through their paces during a series of strenuous sessions before the action gets under way with the Uhren Cup competition on Monday, when the Hammers face Swiss Super League champions FC Basel.
Then, on Wednesday, West Ham take on UEFA Europa League qualifiers BSC Young Boys. Sears is naturally looking forward to both fixtures. "Everyone is looking forward to the trip and everyone is ready for the two games," he added. "Spirit has been very good. The new gaffer has come in and there is a new lease of life around the place. Everyone wants to impress him and show him what they can do."

West Ham United demand Alessandro Diamanti suspension
BBC.co.uk

West Ham United have asked that ex-Hammer striker Alessandro Diamanti's registration at Brescia is suspended by the Italian Football Federation. The East London club claim the latest instalment of Diamanti's £2m transfer fee from Brescia has not yet been paid. The 28-year-old joined the Hammers in 2009 from Livorno for £6m but scored only eight goals in 30 appearances. He left West Ham for Brescia after one season but has since been rewarded with his first cap for Italy. A statement from West Ham read: "Due to the failure of Brescia to pay the latest instalment fee, West Ham have asked the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) to suspend the player's registration and requested that the national association and FIFA impose sporting sanctions until the matter is resolved."

Cole joins squad in Switzerland

Contrary to reports elsewhere, Carlton Cole HAS travelled with West Ham United's first team squad to Switzerland. The Hammers striker was heavily linked with a move to Stoke yesterday following speculation suggesting that talks regarding a £6million move had been held. It was subsequently reported that as a result, the England international would not be joining his team mates in Switzerland for the Uhrencup tournament, which began on Friday night with Young Boys' 4-2 defeat of Hertha Berlin. However KUMB.com understands that Cole HAS been included in the travelling party - along with fellow English internationals Scott Parker and Robert Green. Also included in the group was triallist Jose Hernani - who KUMB revealed last week would be coming to England this week - and former Bolton player Joey O'Brien, who has also been training at Chadwell Heath. Meanwhile Matt Fry's exclusion - as revealed by the disappointed full-back on his Twitter account on Friday morning - was at the expense of Herita Ilunga and Fry's fellow Academy product, Jordan Brown, both of whom are included. The next game in the Uhrencup tournament takes place tonight (Saturday 9th July) when Borussia Dortmund take on FC Zürich. The Hammers are in action for the first time tomorrow (Sunday 10th) when they tackle tonight's winners, Young Boys. Later that night Basel face Hertha Berlin, whilst West Ham and Basel complete the programme on Wednesday night (13th July). The team with the best results from their two games will win the tournament.

Former Hammers striker Mido has been sent to jail following a fracas with a group of students. The Egyptian striker - who would have been addressed by his full name Ahmed Hossam Hussein Abdelhamid in court - was sentenced to a month inside after he and a team mate were found guilty of attacking the trio. Mido - who now plys his trade for his boyhood favourites Zamalek - was accused along with Shikabala (aka Mahmoud Abdel Razek Fadlallah) of attacking the three fans who had initially approached the pair for an autograph. According to Ahram Online, Mido agreed to the request but Shikabala refused - sparking an angry scene that is said to have ended in a melee and subsequent damage to a vehicle owned by one of the students. Both players were convicted of assault and criminal damage and sentenced to a month's jail time. Rumours that Mido was also charged with impersonating a professional footballer could not be verified at the time of writing.

Calcio in the mire with Diamanti

West Ham United have requested that the Italian Football Federation suspend the registration of former player Alessandro Diamanti due to unpaid fees. According to a statement released on whufc.com this afternoon, the club's request follows Diamanti's current club Brescia Calcio's failure to settle the latest instalment of the £2million transfer fee. "Due to the failure of Brescia to pay the latest instalment, West Ham have asked the FIGC to suspend the player's registration and requested that the national association and FIFA impose sporting sanctions until the matter is resolved," it read. The Italian arrived in east London two years ago next month amidst controversial circumstances when it was revealed that his transfer fee - said by Livorno Director of Sport Nelso Ricci to be £5.5million - was partly paid by club sponsors SBOBet. After just 28 first team appearances - and seven goals - he was shipped out by new owners Davids Sullivan and Gold - no doubt as a result of the unusual circumstances surrounding his signing - in the 2010 summer transfer window, despite having been named the club's Best Signing 2009/10 by readers of KUMB.com. In this year's KUMB.com reader's awards, Diamanti was voted as 'Most Missed Player', an award contested by those players who left the club during the previous 12 months.

Allardyce looking at trialists
O'Brien and De Rosa on board, as England trio edge towards exits
Last Updated: July 8, 2011 2:11pm
SSN

West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce has handed trials to Joey O'Brien and Hernani da Rosa. Both men are to take in spells training with the club in an effort to earn permanent stays. O'Brien is a player of considerable Premier League experience, having spent his entire career to date with Bolton Wanderers. He was released over the summer after seeing his contract expire. Da Rosa is a Brazilian defender who has most recently been plying his trade in Poland with Korona Kielce. The 27-year-old was granted Polish citizenship in January and is hoping to force his way into their national side in the not too distant future.

Numbers

Allardyce could be tempted to add the pair to his Upton Park ranks, as he attempts to guide the Hammers back to the top flight at the first time of asking. He is expecting to lose a number of his international stars before the transfer window slams shut, while 11 members of last season's squad have already departed. With his numbers dwindling by the day, Allardyce admits he may need to bring in as many as eight fresh faces to ensure that West Ham are competitive in the Championship.
"That (the summer exodus) has helped the financial fall-out of being relegated but now, unless there are four or five of the young players ready to come in, we probably need to sign eight from outside," he told the Evening Standard. Allardyce has also confirmed that he expects England trio Rob Green, Scott Parker Carlton Cole to soon be on their way back to the big time. He added: "The three of them will all probably want to go to clubs in the Premier League if they can. We will just have to see how things develop."

Hammers demand Diamanti action
Championship club claim transfer instalment fee has not been paid
By Nadia Carminati. Last Updated: July 8, 2011 3:22pm

An alleged non-payment of a £2million transfer-fee instalment has seen West Ham request the Italian Football Federation to suspend Alessandro Diamanti's registration with Brescia. The striker left Upton Park after just one year, hitting eight goals in 30 matches, to join the then Serie A side in August 2010. But the latest instalment of the £2m transfer fee has not been paid, according to the Hammers, and the Championship club have called on football's governing bodies to intervene.
A statement from West Ham read: "Due to the failure of Brescia to pay the latest instalment fee, West Ham have asked the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) to suspend the player's registration and requested that the national association and Fifa impose sporting sanctions until the matter is resolved." He has since scored six goals in 31 appearances for Brescia and earned his first Italy cap.

Lambert looking to add
Canaries boss could bring in another defender

Paul Lambert has revealed that he is still hoping to add at least one more fresh face to his Norwich squad. The Canaries have already drafted in six new recruits this summer, with Anthony Pilkington, Steve Morison, Bradley Johnson,Elliott Bennett, Ritchie de Laet and James Vaughan snapped up. They have, however, still got some room for manoeuvre as they piece together a 25-man squad for the forthcoming Premier League campaign. West Ham's Herita Ilunga is reported to be next on their wish list, and Lambert has admitted that he is still looking for defensive reinforcements.

Characters

"You never stop looking, that is the nature of the game, but the ones we have brought in have added to the squad, which is strong" he said. "We will try to bring someone else in, there might be one in the backline that I am looking at, but we will have to wait and see." He added: "I am delighted with the group which I have assembled. They are not just good players, they are good characters, which is important. "There will be times when disappointment sets in, but as long as they stick together, we will be fine."

Baggies offer £2.5m for Collison
By ANDREW DILLON

The Sun

WEST BROM have bid £2.5million for West Ham ace Jack Collison. The midfielder, 22, is yet to sign a new deal with the Hammers after two weeks of talks. Baggies manager Roy Hodgson made his move this week in the face of competition from Stoke, Newcastle and Everton. The Wales star said: "It's flattering but I'm in negotiations over a contract at the moment. Let's see how that goes." Collison is one of West Ham's lowest earners on just under £4,000 a week but has two years left on his deal. But Hodgson is offering to treble Collison's salary and Premier League football. West Ham youth product Collison returned from a serious knee injury at the back-end of last season. Big Sam wants him to forge a partnership in midfield with new arrival Kevin Nolan.

Carlton hits £6m jackPott
The Sun
By DEAN SCOGGINS
Published: Today

STOKE have agreed a £6million deal for West Ham striker Carlton Cole. The hitman will put pen to paper over the weekend and join Tony Pulis' men on their pre-season tour of Austria. Cole, 27, had a medical in the Potteries yesterday after the Hammers agreed to £4.5m up front plus an additional £1.5m based on appearances.
A source close to the deal said: "Cole was desperate to stay in the Premier League and was impressed by the plans manager Pulis has for the team. "The club targeted him and went all out to get him, which he was impressed with." Stoke had a £3m bid rejected but went back in for Cole - as SunSport revealed on Thursday.
Cole will be the fourth big name to leave Upton Park since West Ham's relegation to the Championship, after Demba Ba, Thomas Hitzlsperger and Matthew Upson.
And England goalkeeper Rob Green could make it a nap hand after moving to the top of West Brom's wishlist. Albion boss Roy Hodgson wants a new stopper - and fancied Green and Birmingham No 1 Ben Foster. Relegated Brum will not budge on their £9m valuation of Foster and that would price Baggies out of a deal. Green would be available at less than half that and Hodgson admitted both are names on his radar. QPR's Paddy Kenny is also in the frame. Hodgson said: "There are good goalkeepers available at the moment in the sense that they don't want to play in lower divisions - you'd be talking about Foster and Green. "And goalkeepers who are second choice at their club despite having a lot of experience. "If anything we have a barrage of suggestions and possibilities."

West Ham striker set to sign for Stoke
Published 23:02 08/07/11 By Mirror Football
The Mirror

Tony Pulis is set to make Carlton Cole his first signing of the summer in a £4.5million deal. Stoke boss Pulis has agreed a fee with relegated West Ham for striker Cole that could see the Potters eventually pay £6m. Cole has been a Stoke target ever since their promotion to the Premier League and is expected to have a stringent medical over the weekend before signing a four-year deal. West Ham rejected a £3m offer last week but have accepted an improved bid and Cole will become the second high-profile departure since dropping out of the Premier League. Stoke will pay an initial £4.5m and then a further £1.5m on appearances for the 27-year-old England international. Pulis and his squad flew out to Austria for a pre-season training camp yesterday and hope Cole can join them in the next 48 hours. Goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen believes Cole, who he knows from a loan spell at former club Aston Villa, will prove a shrewd piece of business. He said: "He is a much improved player. He was fairly young when I played with him at Villa. He was a little bit indisciplined and needed a lot of work. But he has definitely improved. "The role he has had at West Ham has given him a lot of responsibility and you can see he has grown. "He has been involved with the England team and, whenever we have played him, he has been a handful with his physical presence. "He has also capped every season with quite a few goals. If he came to Stoke, I think he would be a great signing for us." Pulis will step up his bid to land Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson and Birmingham pair Scott Dann and Cameron Jerome next week.

ROY HODGSON EYES UP ROBERT GREEN
Daily Star

ROBERT GREEN has jumped to the front of the queue for a Premier League return with West Brom. West Ham star Robert Green is in a straight fight with Birmingham's Ben Foster to grab a top-flight lifeline at The Hawthorns. West Brom boss Roy Hodgson admitted both are on his radar as he lines up a replacement for former England stopper Scott Carson, who has left for Turkey. Carson's surprise move to Bursaspor has left Hodgson needing a new No.1. And with Green and Foster relegated last season, Hodgson knows there is no shortage of top-quality stoppers available. Birmingham's Foster would jump at the move, having stated that he is settled in the Midlands. But his main problem might be the £9m price tag Birmingham will be looking for his services. Green could be brought in from West Ham for around £2m and with West Brom reluctant to splash big money, may jump to the top of the list. Hodgson, who yesterday completed the free transfer signings of defenders Billy Jones from Preston and Gareth McAuley, from Ipswich, said: "There are good goalkeepers available right now in the sense that they don't want to play in lower divisions. "You'd be talking about Foster and Green in that regard. If anything, we have a barrage of suggestions and possibilities. "The one thing I can say is that many of the names being bandied around would be very good additions to the team."

West Ham's Carlton Cole heads to Stoke City in £6m deal
Stoke set to pay £4.5m up front, plus add-ons
Pulis likely to end interest in Blues striker Jerome
Stuart James
guardian.co.uk, Friday 8 July 2011 23.03 BST

Stoke City have agreed a deal worth up to £6m with West Ham United for Carlton Cole. Tony Pulis, the Stoke manager, is hopeful that the 27-year-old striker will be able to join up with the Midlands club this weekend on their pre-season training camp in Austria. It is understood that Stoke will pay £4.5m up front for Cole with a further £1.5m to follow in add-ons depending on whether the player triggers various clauses. Pulis has been tracking Cole for some time and failed with a bid for the former Chelsea player last month. Queens Park Rangers also inquired about Cole, who had two years remaining on his contract at Upton Park but was always likely to move on in the wake of relegation from the Premier League last season. Cole endured a disappointing campaign, finishing with only five league goals from 35 appearances. The imminent arrival of Cole suggests that Pulis is unlikely to continue with his pursuit of the Birmingham City striker Cameron Jerome, who has similar attributes to the former England forward.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce craves stability for Premier League return
London 24
Friday, July 8, 2011
3:22 PM

Sam Allardyce has vowed West Ham will not be forced into a damaging fire-sale of the club's best players. New boss Allardyce is plotting a speedy return to the Premier League, after the Upton Park outfit suffered the pain of relegation to the Championship last season. But twelve players have already jumped ship since then, heaping on the pressure to quickly find replacements. Now joint owners David Gold and David Sullivan told him they are determined to get value from sales, revealed Allardyce. "In my experience people will think there will be a fire-sale, but the owners have told me that will not be the case," said Allardyce. "There will be clubs who will believe they can pinch a player just before the deadline and my experience tells me that someone will try and do a deal in the last few days, leaving us little or no time to find a replacement," he warned. "Then, it is better to bite the bullet and keep them because they will help get us promoted. I'm hoping that, if these clubs want our players, they make an offer soon because, if they have to go, it will be easier to replace them now than in a month's time."

Allardyce targets eight new faces
Virgin

Sam Allardyce wants to sign eight more players for West Ham's crack at promotion back to the Premier League. The new Hammers boss expects to lose England internationals Scott Parker, Robert Green and Carlton Cole, with the latter a target for Stoke, while 11 of last season's squad have already left Upton Park. "That has helped the financial fall-out of being relegated but now, unless there are four or five of the young players ready to come in, we probably need to sign eight from outside," Allardyce told the Evening Standard. On his England trio, he added: "The three of them will all probably all want to go to clubs in the Premier League if they can. We will just have to see how things develop."

Allardyce, who has already brought in Kevin Nolan and Abdoulaye Faye, has handed trials to Brazilian defender Hernani da Rosa and former Bolton midfielder Joey O'Brien for the squad's pre-season trip to Switzerland. He has also appointed former Barnet manager Ian Hendon as the club's development coach.

Parker and Green back
WHUFC.com
Sam Allardyce has seen his numbers swelled with the return of some familiar
faces on Thursday
07.07.2011

Robert Green and Scott Parker were among those joining in training for the
first time this summer at a rain-sodden Chadwell Heath on Thursday. The
England duo, who finished last season late after international commitments,
were put through their paces alongside Marek Stech, Winston Reid, James
Tomkins and Jack Collison, who also had national-team duty beyond the end of
May.

Pablo Barrera has been given extra time off because of his exploits at the
CONCACAF Gold Cup and will not join his team-mates in Switzerland when they
travel this weekend. Gary O'Neil was also back in for the next phase of his
rehab, having discarded his crutches following ankle surgery at the end of
last season.

The Hammers will take on BSC Young Boys on Monday, although it remains to be
seen whether those just returning to action will be involved in that opening
fixture of the summer. The week-long training camp will culminate in a match
next Wednesday against FC Basel. Sam Allardyce will also take along some of
the club's most promising youngsters and they could get a chance to impress
in one or both of the fixtures.

Also involved in training on Thursday was Brazil-born triallist Hernani da
Rosa. Hernani, who has Polish citizenship, has spent the last eight years in
the Ekstraklasa, most recently with Korona Kielce.

Scott Parker set to stay in claret and blue
Published 23:01 07/07/11 By James Nursey
The Mirror

Aston Villa are ready to make a move for Scott Parker – as Stewart Downing
prepares to tell manager Alex McLeish he wants to leave. Parker had talks
with new West Ham boss Sam Allardyce yesterday, with his future yet to be
resolved. Harry Redknapp was red-hot favourite to land Parker, but the Spurs
boss is under strict orders to sell before buys and his squad is overloaded
with midfielders. That has alerted several clubs that they may be able to
snatch the England midfielder from under Redknapp's nose. McLeish is keen to
strengthen his midfield and is at the front of the chase to land 30-year-old
Parker, who was hoping to have left Upton Park by now. Arsenal and Liverpool
did show tentative interest but in both cases that has now cooled and Villa
believe they have a chance of landing Parker. Everton are another club
watching developments. Parker has made no secret of the fact that he would
like to get back into the Premier League following the Hammers' relegation
to the Championship, and would love Champions League football to both help
his England career and his chances of being a Three Lions regular at Euro
2012.

Despite being voted Football Writers' Association Player of the Year last
season, Parker knows his England chances could be hampered if he stays at
West Ham.
He is unlikely to rush into moving though, as he fancies joining Tottenham
if Redknapp can successfully shake up his squad. Parker has four years left
on his contract, but West Ham may be willing to allow him to go for around
£5million. As Tottenham scrap to keep hold of Luka Modric, transfer business
at White Hart Lane have been very limited so far. Jermaine Jenas and Wilson
Palacios - who is interesting Napoli - are two potential outgoings who could
make way for Parker, but there have been no concrete offers yet. Parker may
hold off on a decision until he knows whether a move to Tottenham is a
possibility - especially as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may be against
signing another player over 30. Redknapp is also keeping tabs on
developments with Liverpool misfit Joe Cole. The Spurs boss tried to sign
Cole, who's been linked with a loan move to former cub West Ham, last summer
and remains a fan. But, again, a deal could only happen if Redknapp moves
players on.

QPR step up bid for Carlton Cole
Published 23:00 07/07/11 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Neil Warnock will step up his bid to land West Ham striker Carlton Cole in
the coming days - to prove reports of his demise as QPR boss have been
greatly exaggerated. Warnock will also continue trying to persuade
midfielder Adel Taraabt to give the club another season instead of quitting
for pastures new. The Rangers boss will then set about bringing in the other
three players on his shortlist to strengthen last season's Championship
winners. It has been claimed Warnock is a dead man walking, with suggestions
that former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri is set to take over his job. The
rumours have spiralled out of control following the uncontested claim from
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry that QPR lost out on Posh
striker Craig Mackail-Smith because Warnock couldn't guarantee he'd be the
manager long term . Add to that the anger among fans, who face a rise of up
to 40 per cent for tickets next season, and it is easy to see why gloom has
overtaken a summer that should have been filled with optimism for Rangers
fans.

Howard Prosser, author of From Buckets to Billionaires Vol III, which charts
the Hoops' fall and rise over the last 10 years, said: "QPR fans are not
happy. Not at all. The first problem was the rise in ticket prices. "We are
not Chelsea or Arsenal or Tottenham. And even though the club might
rationalise things by saying the tickets are more cost effective you are
still paying through the nose for a half-decent seat. "The people who run
the club need to do something soon. They will tell you all day long about
how they saved the club, and they are right, but since they have come in it
has been one PR disaster after another."

Before Warnock's arrival, Rangers billionaire owners Fabio Briatore, Bernie
Ecclestone and Lakshmi Mittal had been through a staggering EIGHT managers
in four years. It was only Warnock that has given the club direction - his
achievement in taking the club up this summer is his seventh promotion with
six different clubs.
Fears are already growing behind the scenes that, should QPR dispense with
Warnock's services, the club will go into meltdown as they will have no real
football leadership despite the business acumen of the custodians. Prosser
added: "Now that we are in the Premier League, this should be a happy time.
We should be excited by the investment in the playing side. "We should
already be looking to the future and talking about exciting new signings -
but it hasn't happened. Instead, we live on rumours without hearing anything
concrete."

Should Warnock land £6million-rated Cole, it will go a long way to appeasing
fans unhappy with losing out on Mackail-Smith to Brighton. Prosser went on:
"Having two or three of the richest people in the world at the club, you'd
think the finances would be in the best shape ever. But the Barry Fry quotes
[suggesting Warnock does not have the backing of the board] are very
worrying." However, a feeling exists at Loftus Road that Fry's outburst may
have come after the former Peterborough boss had told fans Mackail-Smith
would only go to a Premier League club - only to end up selling him to
Brighton. Despite 35 goals last season, there are understood to have been
doubts as to whether Mackail-Smith could replicate his form in the Premier
League with the board preferring an experienced option. The situation was
indeed the same with Watford striker Danny Graham, who hit 24 League goals
last season to make himself top scorer in the Championship. QPR were in for
Graham, but he eventually moved to Swansea. Cole, 27, has hit double figures
in goals in each of his last three seasons and has made seven appearances
for England. As for Taraabt, tales of the 22-year-old midfielder moving to
Arsenal - despite quips from Warnock - are met with wry smiles behind the
scenes. QPR have had just one, verbal, bid - of around £12m - for the player
from French club Paris St Germain, with one Spanish club also interested.

The west Londoners are expecting PSG's bid to be formalised within the next
few days but the bid will be rejected, with Rangers only prepared to sell
for around a staggering £18million. Taarabt has three years left on his
contract, so QPR are under no pressure to sell and Warnock - who has done
superbly to keep the temperamental Moroccan focused over the last 12 months
- will fight to keep him. While he could not break into the Tottenham team
under Juande Ramos and then Harry Redknapp, Taraabt's improvement under
Warnock was such that he was crowned the Football League Player of the Year
last season. If the Italian contingent within the club's hierarchy still
want Warnock out this summer, they will have to force him out as he is
understood to have no intention of standing aside - particularly not with
two and a half years left to go on his current contract. Should common sense
prevail, however, and Warnock remain, this summer could have a happy ending
after all.

Danny Gabbidon and Jonathan Spector are unlikely to return to West Ham and

London club, but has been affected by a number of injury problems. The Welsh
defender has been linked with a return to Cardiff and he hopes to finalise
his future in the next few weeks. Spector, 25, has been at Upton Park since
June 2006 and was the star performer in West Ham's best performance of the
season when he scored two goals to help his team thrash Manchester United
4-0 in the Carling Cup quarter final. The American international wants to
keep playing at the highest level and has been strongly linked with a move
to Hannover 96.

Martyn Margetson signs for West Ham

West Ham have appointed Martyn Margetson as their new goalkeeping coach,
following the departure of David Coles from the Hammers' backroom staff.
Margetson, who trained with the West Ham today (Thursday), will join from
Cardiff City, who the Hammers coincidentally face on the opening day of the
season, following the appointment of Malky Mackay as Bluebirds manager.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was in the hunt for a new goalkeeping coach after
Coles was relieved of his duties along with first-team coach Paul Groves.
Margetson, who also works with the Wales national team, will now coach the
fit-again Peter Kurucz, Marek Stech and Ruud Boffin, although it remains to
be seen how long the 39-year-old will have the chance to mentor Robert
Green, who is expected to leave the club, should a suitable offer be
received. As a player, Margetson came through Manchester City's youth
programme and made more than 50 first-team appearances. He also played for
Bristol Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Luton, Southend and Huddersfield, before
joining Cardiff City in 2002. The Welshman was made goalkeeping coach for
the Bluebirds in the same year and was also Gary Speed's first backroom
appointment after taking over from John Toshack as manager of the Welsh
national side in 2010.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is currently running the rule over Polish

Brazil-born centre back could join the first-team squad as they jet away on

Likened to Messi last year, now Cole's fighting to prove he's more than just
an average Joe
By DOMINIC KING
Last updated at 10:45 PM on 7th July 2011
Daily Mail

To the families who were enjoying the glorious weather as they ambled
obliviously through Regent's Park, he was just another young man exercising
in the great outdoors. But had the passers-by looked more closely, they
would have seen an England international with 56 caps conducting a series of
sprints, stretching every sinew to give himself an edge before returning to
pre-season training. Determined to recapture his best form, Joe Cole has
certainly put in the hard yards this summer and the session he put himself
through in one of London's most famous settings two weeks ago showed his
determination to kick-start his Liverpool career.

As he approaches the first anniversary of his move to Anfield, Cole finds
his position in Kenny Dalglish's squad even less secure than it was at the
end of last season, following the capture of Charlie Adam from Blackpool and
the pursuit of Aston Villa's Stewart Downing. Cole was the man who arrived
on Merseyside from Chelsea to huge public acclaim and was greeted with a
ringing endorsement from captain Steven Gerrard, who wasted no time in
likening his imagination and skills to Lionel Messi. He was brought in to
provide sublime service for Fernando Torres and ease the burden on Gerrard,
and many predicted Cole would be a resounding success at Anfield and the
business was hailed as one of the best free transfers ever. It has been
anything but. A red card on his Barclays Premier League debut against
Arsenal was followed by missed penalties, injuries and plummeting form. 'I
expect better from myself,' he said last October after being hauled off by
Roy Hodgson during a chastening 2-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park. 'I
know I'm at a club that is going to help me through it. Every minute of
every day I'm thinking about how I can get there again.' But now Cole finds
himself confronted by possibly the biggesttask of his career. It is
inconceivable that £9million signing Adam will not be asked to become a
creative hub after 12 goals and nine assists for Blackpool last season.

LOLLY FOR OLLIE
Ian Holloway is due a £225,000 windfall from Charlie Adam's £9million move
to Liverpool. A clause in the Blackpool manager's contract entitles him to
2.5 per cent of the fee his club will receive for 25-year-old Adam, whom
Holloway signed from Rangers for £500,000 in August 2009. And, in a club
that already has a surfeit of midfielders, it is difficult to envisage the
two men playing in the same team. Many expect Cole to leave Anfield before
this transfer window closes. West Ham would have him back at Upton Park in a
heartbeat, and Queens Park Rangers have also mulled over the pros and cons
of offering him a fresh start. The 29-year-old, however, is not in a hurry
to turn his back on this particular fight. He has three years left on the
lucrative deal he penned in the Swiss town of Bad Ragaz last July but his
reasons for digging in are not purely fiscal. It gnaws away at him that he
has not met expectations and his determination in training has been
recognised by Dalglish as being exemplary.

But it is true that Liverpool would not stand in his way if the right offer
happened to come in and there are no promises he will make it into the
starting line-up.
Adam's signing could well mean the chapter on this part of Cole's career is
reaching an end but, until he hears otherwise, he will attempt to turn the
tide through perseverance and hard work. Should that happen, the afternoon
he spent toiling in Regent's Park will be worth it.

Aldershot prices slashed
WHUFC.com
The club can confirm reduced prices for the Carling Cup fixture against
Aldershot Town
06.07.2011

West Ham United have slashed ticket prices for the Carling Cup first-round
tie with Aldershot Town on Tuesday 9 August. Season ticket holders can get
their seats for just £5 for under-16s and £10 for adults. Academy members
will be able to purchase from 9am on Monday 25 July, with general sale
following that.

The Hammers, who reached the semi-finals of the same competition last
season, will have high hopes of another good run under new manager Sam
Allardyce.
Aldershot, who are managed by former Wimbledon and Bolton Wanderers striker
Dean Holdsworth, finished 14th in League Two last season. The Shots have
never got past the third-round stage of the League Cup and were beaten 3-0
at home by Watford in last season's first round.

Holdsworth played under Allardyce for four seasons at the Reebok Stadium
before embarking on a successful coaching career with Newport County
following his retirement. He has been in charge at the Recreation Ground
since January 2011. West Ham have reached the League Cup final on two
previous occasions, finishing as runners-up to West Bromwich Albion in 1966
and Liverpool in 1981. Outside of wartime football and minor cup
competitions, West Ham have met Aldershot just twice previously. The Hammers
were held to a goalless FA Cup third-round draw at the Boleyn Ground on 5
January 1991 before completing a 6-1 replay victory at the same venue eleven
days later.

Among the players who have represented both clubs are Dale Banton, Bobby
Barnes, Alan Dickie, Neil Finn, George Matthews, Reg Wade and Alan Wooler.

Zaragoza lead busy pre-season

The club can confirm the ticket prices and selling dates for the pre-season
fixture with Real Zaragoza

West Ham United are delighted to confirm reduced ticket prices for this
summer's annual pre-season showpiece match against Real Zaragoza. Tickets
are on sale now to season ticket holders with prices starting at £5 for
Under-16s and £10 for adults. For a full list of the prices for Academy
members and general sale, as well as selling dates, click here.

The Saturday 30 July fixture will be the first home outing in a Hammers
shirt for the club's new recruits including Abdoulaye Faye and Kevin Nolan,
and give supporters the chance to have a glimpse at Sam Allardyce's new-look
side in action. The six-times Spanish Cup winners enjoyed an encouraging
2010/11 campaign, finishing 13th in just their second season back in the top
flight, and are historically the ninth most successful Spanish club of
all-time.

The La Liga side's visit will evoking memories of West Ham United's dramatic
victory over the Aragonese in the 1964/65 European Cup Winners' Cup
semi-finals.
Taking on a potent Zaragoza attack nicknamed 'Los Cinquos Magnificos' - 'The
Magnificent Five' - West Ham raced into a two-goal lead in the first leg at
the Boleyn Ground through goals from Brian Dear and Johnny Byrne. Zaragoza
hit back, meaning the Hammers had a slender 2-1 lead to take to Spain. The
second leg started badly as Zaragoza went ahead on the night and ahead in
the tie on away goals, only for Johnny Sissons to score an all-important
equaliser and send West Ham through to the final, 3-2 on aggregate. At
Wembley, of course, West Ham defeated TSV 1860 Munich 2-0 to lift the
trophy.

Pre-season friendly schedule

Hammers move to reduce risk
WHUFC.com
West Ham United's medical team has introduced a unique new injury-prevention
system
06.07.2011

West Ham United's Sport Medicine and Sport Science department hope a unique
new system will keep players out of the treatment room. In partnership with
the University of Ghent (UGent) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in
Belgium, the Hammers have introduced individual risk profiles for every
professional. The profiles will cover two specific areas - injury prevention
and performance progression - and allow head of sports medicine Andy Rolls
and first-team physiotherapist Stijn Vandenbroucke to constantly monitor
player's individual performances, risk areas and injury histories.

With the help of the two universities, each profile will be updated on a
daily basis throughout the season and will be accessible via a password-safe
website to enable players and staff to keep tabs on their condition from
anywhere on the planet. To kick-off the project Rolls, Vandenbroucke and the
Hammers' medical staff have started screening squad members using a range of
balance, flexibility and strength tests. The test results will help them to
identify areas of individual strength and weakness and tailor each player's
training schedule to minimise their chances of being injured.

Following next week's pre-season trip to Switzerland, the players will
undergo performance progression screening at Chadwell Heath later this
month, adding to the data available. Regular tests will be held throughout
the season.

Vandenbroucke explained the purpose of the screening in detail on West Ham
TV. "We are testing for injury prevention because we want to create an
up-to-date risk profile for every player for throughout the season," he
said. "Therefore we need to know what their weaknesses and their strong
points are, so we're testing their flexibility, strength, stability, core
stability and balance, jumping and a few other things. "From there on,
together with the universities, we can work out what they need to do during
the pre-season and the season."

Vandenbroucke said the pre-season tests would stand the players in good
stead ahead of what will be a busy and demanding season in the npower
Championship.
"I think it's going to be a very tough season with a lot of games and
physical demands on the players, so I think in the pre-season we have to
grab the chance to make everybody as strong as possible so we can go as far
as possible in the competition."

Belgian-born himself, Vandenbroucke said the roles played by his fellow
countrymen at UGent and VUB would be of huge benefit. "We have worked
together with these universities because they have created an algorithm
[list of instructions] which will help us on a daily basis with injury
prevention and performance progression.
"After each training session, they will help us to create an injury-risk
profile for the following day so we know if players have trained well, if
they are fatigued or if they are at risk of suffering a certain injury.
"We're trying to use evidence-based data and use Sport Science at a high
level."

Downes on the up

Wally Downes has told West Ham TV a strong squad will be the key to gaining
promotion this term
06.07.2011

Wally Downes has told West Ham TV a strong squad will be key to getting West
Ham United promoted this season and expects the club to hit the ground
running in the npower Championship. The first-team coach emphasised the need
for a collective desire to get the job done, and expects the story of the
season to be about the team and not the individual. Speaking to the club's
exclusive online TV service, Downes said: "This season it is going to be
about how strong and how supportive the squad is. "It is not about the
eleven players or the 18 players, it is about 20 or even 30 players because
of the amount of games we are going to play, it will be about 50-60 games a
season on a regular basis. "Players have to be ready to come into a
successful side and perform to the level of whoever they are replacing."

Wearen ready for EUROs

Eoin Wearen is in Republic of Ireland's squad for the UEFA European U19
Championship finals
06.07.2011

West Ham United's Eoin Wearen has been selected in Republic of Ireland's
squad for the UEFA European U19 Championship finals in Romania. The talented
Dublin-born central midfielder has been named in his country's squad by head
coach Paul Doolin after playing an important role in helping the Irish to
qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2002. Ireland have been
drawn in Group A alongside Greece, Czech Republic and the host nation, while
Group B contains Serbia, Turkey, Spain and Belgium. Eighteen-year-old Wearen
and his compatriots kick-off their challenge by facing Greece in Buftea on
20 July before tackling the Czechs in Mogosoaia on 23 July and and Romania
in Beroeni on 26 July. Doolin's squad successfully qualified for the
eight-team finals by coming through two tough group stages, seeing off the
challenge of Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Luxembourg along the way.

Wearen himself will be available to play in Ireland's opening match after
serving a one-match suspension in the 3-0 victory over Italy in their final
Elite Round qualifying fixture. The Hammers youngster had been sent-off for
two bookable offences in the goalless draw with Ukraine. Republic of Ireland
have never won the European U19 Championship. However, the Irish did lift
the trophy in its former guise as an U18 tournament in 1998.

The cost of short-termism

West Ham United have extended the season ticket deadline by a fortnight -
due to 'high demand'. The original deadline passed at 5pm last night with
reports of ticket sales being well down on last season. And this morning
the club have confirmed that the deadline for renewals is being extended by
a fortnight - as a result of 'high demand coupled with fan feedback',
according to whufc.com.

However it is rather more likely that many thousands of existing season
ticket holders have refused to renew due to the club's short-term decision
to sell match day tickets last season for less than the equivalent cost of a
season ticket - a policy that has clearly hit the club hard this summer.
Supporters were able to purchase match day tickets last season from agencies
such as Viagogo from just £15 - a policy that caused furious reactions from
season ticket holders who felt that any concessions should be passed their
way, not to fairweather fans.

Despite the season ticket price freeze and extra four games, many thousands
of existing ST holders have instead decided to 'pay on the day' next season,
due to the considerable decrease in demand for Championship tickets. Tickets
for West Ham's opening three games of the 2011/12 season - against Cardiff,
Aldershot (Carling Cup) and Leeds - go on general sale from Saturday, 23rd
July.

Cheapest match day tickets last season

Bolton: £36 (available from WHUFC)
Chelsea: £46 (WHUFC)
Tottenham: £25 (Viagogo)
Fulham: £36 (WHUFC)

Cole rumour resurfaces
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 6th July 2011
By: Staff Writer

Joe Cole is once again being linked with a return to the Boleyn Ground. The
out-of-favour Liverpool midfielder, who left West Ham in 2003 having refused
to sign a new contract is thought to have been made an offer to join United
on loan for the forthcoming Championship season. As unlikely a deal as it
may seem, KUMB.com understands that enquiries have indeed been made by West
Ham with regards to making the move a possibility.

However any move would hinge on Liverpool paying the majority of the former
England international's £90,000 per week wages - assuming, of course, Cole
would opt to play in the second division instead of choosing from a whole
host of Premier League options, as would surely be revealed should it be
known that he is available for loan.

West Ham announced today that they are delaying the season ticket holder
deadline by a fortnight. It is thought that the club are keen to announce a
marquee signing - or, cynics may suggest, be strongly linked with one -
before that deadline is reached.

Plug pulled on season review DVD

West Ham United have cancelled production of the 2010/11 season review DVD.
The annual season review DVD, produced in recent years by ILC Media has been
abolished due to a perceived lack of demand. With West Ham United relegated
from the Premier League last term having won only seven league games all
season, it was felt that supporters simply wouldn't buy the DVD which
retailed last year at £15.99. As a result, Hammers fans keen to add to their
collection will have no option but to wait until the end of next season -
assuming, that is, West Ham perform rather better under Sam Allardyce than
they did under Avram Grant.

That good ol' West Ham way
KUMB,com
Filed: Wednesday, 6th July 2011
By: Kit Robinson

So what is it, the West Ham way? Were West Ham ever this slick, great
passing side that many of our fans believe we are? Is it a myth? Or are we
living in a parallel footballing universe?

Will the introduction of Sam Allardyce see an end to it or just a massive
improvement by getting back to basics? The media has West Ham as the bookies
favourite to be promoted which is massively at odds with the performances of
Avram Grant's team of last season. So where are we going stylistically as a
football team?

There are two major factors which arrived with the signing of Sam Allardyce
as manager of West Ham. Fear and organisation. Two elements that could
hardly have been applied to facing the Hammers last season or to be expected
had Avram Grant been retained as manager this season.

If the West Ham way is supposedly quality football and skill, then it was
sorely missing last season. In fact it has been missing for a few seasons.
Or is it the case that it was simply not a regular occurrence and only
something we aspired to but rarely actually achieved over the last 30 years
or more?

The media commentators often refer to West Ham as a great 'footballing'
side. Yet I have so rarely seen this in action. Last season West Ham were
barely capable of completing any passes, let alone assists which made
opportunities on goal. Those goalscoring opportunities were largely wasted
and meanwhile at the back, the defence seemed inept and disorganised.

The team as a whole were prone to only being fit for 70 minutes of a match
and often relented to any kind of pressure and often gave away their lead in
matches where they should have finished the opposition off. Whether West Ham
fans like it or not, the club needs a big shake up in the team, management
and back room staff.

So what has changed so far apart from releasing a number of players with the
squad currently down to 26 players and with some top players possibly still
to leave? Where are the bookies and the media getting this renewed optimism
for West Ham from? The back room staff is being drastically changed with few
not being replaced. And then there is the manager. Whether you like him or
not, the likelihood is that he is the right man for the job.

West Ham fans only needed to watch the Champions League final to realise
what great football is when seeing Barcelona. If that is what West Ham
aspire to then great, but is it achievable on our budget? No. It could also
be argued whether West Ham ever consistently played that way. In my own
lifetime I have only ever seen West Ham play that brand of football for
around six seasons and the rest of the time they have been pretty dire and
have deservedly yo-yo'd between leagues.

The fact is that football has moved on. Even in the '60s under Ron Greenwood
and with three World Cup winners in the side, West Ham still struggled. They
had brief periods in the last 30 years when some classy football was played
but often, ironically, in a lower league.

Barcelona, Manchester United and all the top clubs don't play great football
purely because of a great manager. They can afford great players, we can't.
This simple fact means that other clubs have gotten better than us at
playing decent football and funds dictate that we can no longer compete in
obtaining skillful players.

As much as we would like to think that we can get hold of a manager who can
miraculously gel Academy players into a slick unit who can compete at the
top level, it simply isn't going to happen. It's also been the situation for
many years that if West Ham produce anyone of any quality that they are soon
snapped up.

The most valuable man at West Ham for the last nearly 40 years is Tony Carr
who has helped develop players who we can sell, many times in order to keep
the club afloat. If we don't, or will never consistently, have these
skillful players then West Ham need to accept the fact that they are going
to have to change their style of play, get back to basics and get simpler
and tougher. But that doesn't necessarily mean that fans will be devoid of
watching any stylish play.

It really is a fallacy that Sam Allardyce's teams only play route one and
aerial football. They do a lot of the time but not always. West Ham fans
need to change their perspective of what they require. If they still solely
want 'the West Ham way' then the future of the club could seriously be in
jeopardy because the team simply cannot compete playing that way any more.

It's a choice between trying to play nice football but losing and having
fewer and fewer seasons of being able to compete playing that style. Or for
now, playing a simpler game, achieving the basics and winning a larger
number of matches but having the occasional match of great attractive
football.

Teams like Bolton under Allardyce used to stuff us home and away. Yes they
were rougher and tougher but we couldn't handle it, but they also did play
some really decent football at times but we don't like to admit it through
our claret and blue specs. It wasn't all route one and they often scored
some great goals. Let's face it, we feared them, as did many other sides.
They were also always very organised.

If this shake-up is successful, West Ham gain promotion, maintain a Premier
League status for around five years and the Olympic Stadium repays the club
the dividends it potentially could do, THEN, West Ham fans can start talking
about the West Ham way again, once the club has enough funds to compete at
the highest level.

Until then, it's time to win matches, as Allardyce has said, by whatever
style is necessary. It's time to win ugly not lose prettily. Then when some
cosmetic surgery is required, we'll get it done when we can afford to do it.

Hammers eye Baraclough move

Skysports.com understands West Ham are set to appoint former Scunthorpe boss
Ian Baraclough to their coaching staff. West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is keen
to bolster his backroom team after seeing Kevin Keen leave for Liverpool
earlier this week. Allardyce has lined up a move for highly-rated coach
Baraclough as he begins his plans for next season. Baraclough took his first
steps into coaching when he was named first-team coach under Nigel Adkins at
Scunthorpe in 2006. The 40-year-old replaced Adkins as manager last
September following his departure to Southampton, but he was dismissed by
Scunthorpe in March with the club rooted to the bottom of the table.
Baraclough has gained the reputation as one the best young coaches around
and Allardyce believes he will be a valuable addition to the Hammers set-up.

Warnock keen to bring Cole to QPR but Taarabt could be on his way out
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 12:08 PM on 6th July 2011
Daily Mail

Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock is keen hand Carlton Cole a Premier
League lifeline by offering him a contract with the Premier League new boys.
Relegated West Ham are keen to get the England striker off the wage bill as
they prepare for life in The Championship and will listen to bids of around
£6 million.
Stoke had a £3m bid for Cole rejected by West Ham earlier in the summer, and
have not returned with an improved bid. The 27-year-old striker has two
years remaining on his contract at Upton Park and his departure could pave
the way for Blackpool striker DJ Campbell to join the Hammers. Sam Allardyce
has been chasing Campbell for the last month and triggered the £1.25m
release clause in his contract, but the striker is keen to move to a Premier
League club. If QPR are successful with a move for Cole, Warnock admitted
that it is unlikely that the striker will partner Adel Taarabt, as the
Moroccan international looks set to leave the Premier League new boys.
Warnock said: 'PSG [Paris St-Germain] have made an inquiry and they
obviously offer him the chance to be nearer to home, although there is a
Spanish club being mentioned as well. 'As far as his talk of wanting to go
to Chelsea or Arsenal, I know he has a lot of friends at Arsenal. He is
missing his family in Marseille. 'If we get a big offer from a club in
France that obviously gives him a chance to be closer to them. That would be
a big pull. 'Flavio Briatore [the QPR co-owner] is dealing with the
negotiations. He is keeping me informed of the situation and at this precise
moment [Adel] won't be leaving because no one has met the asking price.'

Should We Sell Carlton Cole
July 7th, 2011 - 8:23 am by Iain Dale
West Ham Till I Die

Two summers ago we sold Bobby Zamora to Fulham. Many of us couldn't
understand why we would sell Zamora when Cole was the one who couldn't hit a
barn door. But then Gianfranco Zola worked his magic and Cole had a stormer
of a season. But since Zola's departure he has failed to recapture that
goalscoring form. Cole is not the sort of player who will ever get 20 goals
season, but in more games than some of us care to admit, he has done a
brilliant job occupying the time of a couple of defenders.

Yes, he can look incredibly awkward and gangly. Yes, his first touch can let
him down. Yes, his head can go down when things are not going his way. But
he is a talent who, given the right leadership, can still do a job for us.
But will he get the opportunity?

The jury's out. Stoke and QPR are rumoured to be interested in his services.
Stoke, however, insulted him and the club by tabling a bit of a pathetic £3
million. I hope West Ham told Stoke where to go in no uncertain terms. They
already got one bargain off us, in the form of Matthew Etherington, and it
would be adding insult to injury to let them have another. QPR haven't
tabled a formal bid, but rumours continue to swirl.

I've heard on the grapevine that Cole has asked his agent to find him a new
club, but that club has to be in London. Effectively that means Fulham or
QPR.

So the question for today is should we sell Carlton Cole, and if so what's
the lowest bid we should entertain. If I was pushed to make a decision I
would say yes, but not for less than £7 million.

The fight for Cole hots up
By DEAN SCOGGINS

STOKE are ready to raise their bid for Carlton Cole to £6million as they try
to beat QPR to the striker's signature. Potters chief Tony Pulis wants to
boost his attacking options and had an initial £3m offer for the West Ham
hitman snubbed. Stoke's first bid for Cole, 27, did include extensive
add-ons that would have seen the deal rise to £8m. But the relegated Hammers
want £6m up front and Premier League new-boys QPR are ready to pounce - and
can offer Croydon-born Cole the advantage of staying in London. Pulis also
wants to land the Birmingham duo of defender Scott Dann and frontman Cameron
Jerome. Britannia Stadium chairman Peter Coates claimed his club were close
to agreeing a deal but Birmingham will not be forced into a cut-price sale
and want £14m for the 24-year-olds. Coates said: "We have made an offer and
are hoping to do a deal that will satisfy both clubs. "We were very close to
a deal but then you still have to sort things out with the players. These
things can take forever. "You have to have other irons in the fire because
things can go wrong. "As one agent once said 'The truth today may not be the
truth tomorrow'."

Hammer Parker's future could be decided today
Published 23:00 06/07/11 By Mike McGrath
The Mirror

Scott Parker is set for crunch talks with Sam Allardyce today over his West
Ham future. England midfielder Parker is back for pre-season training and
will have his first face-to-face meeting with Big Sam. The new Hammers boss
has insisted he wants to sit down to talk with his England internationals,
rather than speak on the phone.
Robert Green and Carlton Cole are also due to return to the club's Chadwell
Heath HQ, along with Under-21 defender James Tomkins and Wales youngster
Jack Collison. Allardyce will speak to players who have concerns about their
futures, then decide on a squad to take to Switzerland at the weekend for
the club's pre-season tour. In the case of Parker, who won the Football
Writers' Association player-of-the-year award last season, it has appeared
likely a transfer would suit both player and the club. Tottenham boss Harry
Redknapp is interested in the 30-year-old former Chelsea and Newcastle man.
Only scandal-hit Turkish giants Fenerbahce have tabled a bid though, and
Parker is reluctant to move abroad.

Big Sam targets a 20-goals-a-season striker

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has revealed that signing a striker is his top
priority as he looks to build a squad capable of securing promotion back to
the Premier League at the first time of asking. Having missed out on
Peterborough United forward Craig Mackail-Smith this week, who signed for
Brighton & Hove Albion, the 56-year-old has turned his attention elsewhere,
with a shortlist having already been drawn up. "We will run the rule over a
few players, but I think we do need another striker in the squad," he
stressed. "It is difficult to work with just three strikers, especially in a
46-game season and ideally we will be looking for two strikers to grab
between 15 and 20 goals each."

Despite being in the market for new players, Allardyce has not ruled out the
possibility of keeping some of his international stars – most notably Robert
Green, Scott Parker, Carlton Cole and Pablo Barrera, who return to
pre-season training today (Thursday). "They return this week and then I will
sit down with them and they can tell me what their plans are," he said.
"Obviously if they want to go and we get a satisfactory bid in then I
wouldn't want to stand in their way, but let us see what they say first – we
have not received bids for any of the players."

This week is the first time that Allardyce has had a chance to really look
at the majority of the squad that he has inherited, and he admits that he
has been impressed with what he has seen so far. "It has been lovely weather
and the boys are looking very enthusiastic," he said. "Everyone looks like
they are glad to be back."
"Last season was a miserable one, but we have to put that behind us and
start to work on the task ahead and that is getting straight back into the
Premier League."

Tomorrow (Friday) the Hammers will leave for their pre-season tour of
Switzerland where they will play two games. On Monday, West Ham face BSC
Young Boys, before playing against former Hammers midfielder Radoslav
Kovac's new side FC Basel on Wednesday. "I have always gone on pre-season
tours in the past and they are an invaluable way of getting to know everyone
and improving the team spirit," said Allarydce. "We have lots of new faces
among the players and the staff and this will be the perfect chance for
everyone to get to know each other."

West Ham hope to throw Joe Cole a lifeline by sealing loan deal from
Liverpool

West Ham are exploring an ambitious deal to bring Joe Cole back to Upton
Park. Manager Sam Allardyce is keen to recruit more Premier League quality
players in a bid to make a swift return to the top flight. However, West
Ham would only be able to afford a loan deal and would need Liverpool to
heavily subsidise the former England man's £100,000-a-week wages. Cole, 29,
wants to fight for his place at Liverpool but had a poor first season
blighted by niggling injuries and is struggling to impose himself on Kenny
Dalglish's first-team plans. His situation has been compounded by the
signings of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam while Stewart Downing is
expected to follow from Aston Villa. Cole, who has also been mentioned as a
potential makeweight in the Downing deal, may prefer to wait until later in
the summer before talking to West Ham but they are keen to lift the fans
ahead of the new season. A return to the club he left in 2003 would give
the team impetus for their promotion drive.

Backroom Business
Just Like My Dreams

We've had Fletcher and Mackay and now West Ham are looking to add Baraclough
to their growing list of Slade Prison namesakes. The club are reportedly
close to appointing former Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough to their coaching
staff, according to several sources. Sam Allardyce is keen to bolster his
backroom team after seeing Kevin Keen leave for Liverpool earlier this week
and has lined up a move for the highly-rated coach as he begins his plans
for next season. Baraclough took his first steps into coaching when he was
named first-team coach under Nigel Adkins at Scunthorpe in 2006. The
40-year-old replaced Adkins as manager last September following his
departure to Southampton, but he was dismissed by Scunthorpe in March with
the club rooted to the bottom of the table. Sky Sports state Baraclough has
gained the reputation as one the best young coaches around and Allardyce
believes he will be a valuable addition to the Hammers set-up.

It is likely Baraclough would become the coach to link the Academy and
developing players to the first-team squad; the only position Allardyce said
he had left to fill in the restructuring of his immediate backroom staff.
The new Hammers boss had initially been tipped to team up again with his
former coach Sammy Lee at Upton Park. The former Liverpool coach left
Anfield last week, and had previously worked alongside Allardyce at Bolton
Wanderers. "We are looking to bring in one more coach, but it will not be
Sammy," confirmed Allardyce yesterday. "Sammy is a first-team coach, but I
have Neil McDonald and Wally Downes here already. We are looking at people
at the moment though, and hopefully we will have someone in place in time
for the trip to Switzerland at the end of the week."

The news comes just days after West Ham appointed Martyn Margetson as their
new goalkeeping coach and extended the contract of Tony Carr. Margetson, 39,
held the same position at Cardiff, but has left the Welsh club to join Sam
Allardyce's backroom team at Upton Park. Meanwhile Carr signed a new
five-year deal with the club. The world-renowned Youth Academy director,
whose existing deal was up this summer, put pen to paper on a contract that
will keep him tied to West Ham United until 2016. The 60-year-old has been
employed by the club in a coaching capacity since 1973, and only last year
he was awarded the MBE for services to football.

Speaking to KUMB.com last year Carr admitted that despite the lure of offers
from elsewhere, he always intended to see his career out at Chadwell Heath.
"If the club want me to stay I'd like to stay," he said. "I'd like to go on
for another three or four years, if I'm honest. I'm quite healthy, I still
enjoy it, I still think there's work to be done. We've got good kids in the
system and I want to see them develop. I hope there's going to be some good
players coming through in the next three or four years and I want to be part
of that. Obviously there comes a time when you go 'look Tone, as much as we
love you you've got to pack it in'. And I understand that. But whilst I'm
still quite fit and healthy... the day I stop enjoying it is the day I go
'thanks, but I've done my bit'."

If Baraclough does arrives it will be as direct replacement for the departed
Keen. The Hammers stalwart left his role as first-team coach only last week
to take up a similar position at Anfield, but is anticipating a return to
the Boleyn Ground with his new club sooner rather than later. "I am
extremely confident with the squad that is there, that even if West Ham lose
a couple of top players, this time next year Liverpool will be playing West
Ham in the Premier League and I can't wait to be back," he said. Having
served the club for nearly 20 years as player and coach, Keen admitted he
would miss the close connection with the passionate Hammers faithful and
said they would always be close to his heart. "The supporters have always
been fantastic. I thank them for their support. I have been at the club for
nine years as a player and nine years as a coach and I have learned so much
from good managers, the likes of Paul Heffer and Tony Carr and also from
those people who don't always get the credit. A part of me will always be
claret and blue. It is the right time for me to move on but you never know
what will happen in the future."

Wally Downes is equally confident of the Hammers chances and told West Ham
TV a strong squad will be key to getting the club promoted this season.
Downes expects the club to hit the ground running in the npower
Championship, with the first-team coach emphasising the need for a
collective desire to get the job done. In short, he expects the story of the
season to be about the team and not the individual. "This season it is going
to be about how strong and how supportive the squad is," he said. "It is not
about the eleven players or the 18 players, it is about 20 or even 30
players because of the amount of games we are going to play, it will be
about 50-60 games a season on a regular basis. Players have to be ready to
come into a successful side and perform to the level of whoever they are
replacing."

With such an arduous challenge ahead, the work of United's Sport Medicine
and Sport Science department will be of paramount importance. It is their
hope that a unique new system will keep players out of the treatment room.
In partnership with the University of Ghent (UGent) and Vrije Universiteit
Brussel (VUB) in Belgium, the Hammers have introduced individual risk
profiles for every professional. The profiles will cover two specific areas
- injury prevention and performance progression - and allow head of sports
medicine Andy Rolls and first-team physiotherapist Stijn Vandenbroucke to
constantly monitor player's individual performances, risk areas and injury
histories.

Regular tests will be held throughout
the season. Vandenbroucke explained the purpose of the screening in detail .
From there on,
together with the universities, we can work out what they need to do during
the pre-season and the season."

Vandenbroucke said the pre-season tests would stand the players in good
stead ahead of what will be a busy and demanding season in the npower
Championship. "I think it's going to be a very tough season with a lot of
games and physical demands on the players, so I think in the pre-season we
have to grab the chance to make everybody as strong as possible so we can go
as far as possible in the competition." Belgian-born himself, Vandenbroucke
said the roles played by his fellow countrymen at UGent and VUB would be of
huge benefit. "We have worked together with these universities because they
have created an algorithm [list of instructions] which will help us on a
daily basis with injury prevention and performance progression. "After each
training session, they will help us to create an injury-risk profile for the
following day so we know if players have trained well, if they are fatigued
or if they are at risk of suffering a certain injury. We're trying to use
evidence-based data and use Sport Science at a high level."

Having blogged two weeks ago about how Allardyce has been in the vanguard of
football's scientific revolution, it is the clearest indication yet of the
direction the club is now moving. While Rolls and Vandenbroucke collate
their data, the manager has been busy running the rule over his squad this
week in training before they jet off on Friday. He has declared himself
happy with what he has seen. "It has been lovely weather and the boys are
looking very enthusiastic. Everyone looks like they are glad to be back," he
said. "Last season was a miserable one, but we have to put that behind us
and start to work on the task ahead and that is getting straight back into
the Premier League." The trip to Switzerland, where they will play two
games, is one Allardyce is looking forward to. "I have always gone on
pre-season tours in the past and they are an invaluable way of getting to
know everyone and improving the team spirit," he said. "We have lots of new
faces among the players and the staff and this will be the perfect chance
for everyone to get to know each other."

West Ham start their pre-season campaign with a match against Young Boys of
Berne on Monday, with a 6pm kick-off, before playing FC Basel on Wednesday.
