Supporter Advisory Board launched
WHUFC.com
David Sullivan and Karren Brady were present for the first meeting of the
club's new fan initiative
27.05.2011

More than 100 fans took part in the successful inaugural session of the
club's Supporter Advisory Board on Thursday night. Joint-Chairman David
Sullivan was in attendance in the Legends Lounge at the Boleyn Ground to
hear an open and honest exchange of views with the invited panel, who will
go on to consult and inform on key issues concerning West Ham United. The
aim is to increase communication at a crucial stage in the history of the
club. Thanking everyone for taking part and offering their time,
Vice-Chairman Karren Brady said the panel had complete Board support and was
all about the importance of listening to what fans had to say on all areas
of the club. After presentations including an update on the Olympic Stadium,
the gathered guests were invited to air their views on specific areas such
as matchday experience and retail. After a number of submitted questions
from the floor, the Chairman began the evening with an update on the
managerial situation and also dealt with squad matters for the new season.
Mindful of the ongoing process, he said: "The selection of the manager is of
critical importance. We are spending a lot of time on it but we have a
little bit of time to make a decision. "As you go down the list there are
pros and cons with a lot of people and we are looking for someone with a
proven track record in the Championship or higher or in the Premier League
who wants to come to us."

The Chairman said the club were hoping to appoint a British manager and that
key first-team decisions would not be made until an appointment was made -
save for contract negotiations that were open now. He added the 2011/12
Hammers would have "a core of homegrown players" and that funds would be
available for several signings to supplement them.

The fans who had signed up to be present on the evening had to be
recommended by five season ticket holders or members. With the aim to ensure
they represent the core fan base of the club. As such, the Board contained a
wide cross-section of supporters, from season ticket holders to corporate
members, corporate clients and Bondholders. On the night, fans came from far
and wide - one even flew in from Madrid to be involved. New Board member
Craig Hughes welcomed the opportunity to play a part in the club's future,
saying: "The Advisory Board is a fantastic platform to express our ideas and
opinions on matters that affect the club we all love. Every fan has their
own ideas and through this board we can advise the management on what real
fans think."

Fellow member Rachel Beagles shared those sentiments, adding: "Fans
typically complain that the management don't care. The Supporter Advisory
Board should represent an opportunity to ensure that the views of fans are
heard and that the matchday experience is improved for all."

Meetings will take place four times per year, while the club will also
contact the Board whenever they want to harness their opinion on important
issues.
The inaugural Supporter Advisory Board will consist of the following
members: Steve Burton, Dave Tate, Michael Crowhurst, Christopher Maslin, Sue
Hudson, Benjamin Lanyado, Paul Gibson, Graham Hatt, Tom Dowsett, Paul Fox,

Dev calls for commitment
WHUFC.com
Alan Devonshire believes hard work is a must if West Ham United are to
regain their top-flight status
27.05.2011

Alan Devonshire believes instilling a positive attitude in the West Ham
United squad will be the main task for the club's new manager. The Hammers
are currently searching for the man to take the club forward and Devonshire,
who was appointed as manager of Blue Square Bet Premier new-boys Braintree
Town this week, knows the making the right appointment will be vital to the
club's future. Having endured two difficult seasons and been relegated to
from the Barclays Premier League, the former West Ham and England midfielder
has told West Ham TV that a change in mindset is needed if the Hammers are
to bounce back and be promoted at the first attempt. "When I played, you
trained as you played so it [working hard] became a habit. If you needed a
kick up the backside you got it, or if you needed an arm around you then you
got it. "I worked under good managers like John Lyall and bad managers and,
at the end of the day, they have to pick the best things.
"Man managing the players is the main thing. You've got to get inside their
heads and work out what makes them tick, do the right things for them to get
them out on the pitch in the right frame of mind. "I'm distraught about it,
to be honest."

Devonshire himself suffered the disappointment of relegation in 1977/78 and,
more than 30 years later, the feelings are just the same this time around.
The 55-year-old helped fire the Hammers back to the top-flight the following
season, enjoying an outstanding season in Division Two and winning the 1979
Hammer of the Year award. Just as West Ham showed back then, Devonshire
insists hard work is the pre-requisite to gaining promotion next term. "I'm
gutted, absolutely gutted. Half a dozen games before the end I thought we
were going to get out of it, but our performances haven't been good enough
all season and we're down. "I started in non-league but I was here from the
age of 20 and was brought up here and was here for a long time, for 14
years, and the one thing the fans want is commitment. They want players who
give 110 per cent. "Being a professional footballer is the best job in the
world, take it from me, and if you can't give 110 per cent then there is
something wrong with you. "It's just been a really disappointing season and
I'm just gutted for everyone at the club, especially the fans."

Allardyce offered job?

Fresh rumours are suggesting that Sam Allardyce has been offered the vacant
managerial position. Allardyce - who is thought to be in the North East
tonight attending an event at Sunderland - is said to have been given the
chance to become West Ham United's 14th full-time manager after a day in
which he went from an outsider to odds-on favourite to land the post with
the bookies. Following David Sullivan's revelation last night that he had
offered the job to two parties within the past 24 hours, speculation as to
their identities has been rife. However nothing has yet been forthcoming
from within Upton Park to offer any further indication of how negotiations
are progressing.

Allardyce: Middle East - or the East End?

Sam Allardyce could be named as the 14th full-time manager of West Ham
United - if he rejects an offer to work in Abu Dhabi. The 56-year-old is
being hotly tipped to accept an offer from West Ham that was said to have
been made earlier this week - despite having previously expressed a desire
to move to the capital of the United Arab Emirates. News emerging late
Saturday night suggested that Allardyce had been swayed by West Ham's
overtures and was set to agree terms. But at the same time, the Arabic
press were claiming that the former Bolton manager was set to join Pro
League outfit Al Jazira. Allardyce, in a recent interview with Sport360 is
reported to have said: "I got an offer last summer for a job with Al Ahli
which is something I was interested in. "So when a job comes up in that part
of the world - and in particularly with Jazira - it is something I would
love to do."

Allardyce is said to have been offered a £1.25million contract with a
£1million plus bonus for achieving promotion next season with West Ham.

West Ham's United's captain at the 2006 FA Cup Final has been released by
Aston Villa on a free transfer. Nigel Reo-Coker, who once appeared to have
the football world at his feet was confirmed today as one of ten players the
Midlands club were not offering new contracts to. Reo-Coker's snub comes
exactly five years after he became West Ham's youngest captain to lead the
club into an FA Cup Final. That game - widely considered the greatest final
in recent years - was eventually won by Liverpool on penalties after the
teams played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. But less than a year later, Reo-Coker
was on his way to Villa in an £8.5million deal. Alan Pardew brought thr
former England under-21 captain to West Ham in January 2004, when he paid
the now defunct Wimbledon £500,000 for his services. Less than two years
later, and having returned to the Premier League via the Championship
play-offs at Cardiff the summer before Reo-Coker led his side out at the
same venue for that incredible 2006 Final. However his next - and final -
season at West Ham quickly turned into a nightmare. Having fallen out with
supporters by cupping his hand to his ear when scoring the winning goal
against Manchester United - and having been accused of membership of the
notorious 'Bentley boys' club by Alan Curbishley - Reo-Coker became the
focal point for the team's ills. Having accused - without foundation -
supporters of racial abuse, the writing was on the wall for the
Southwark-born player - and Martin O'Neill paid the inflated sum in July
2007 to take him to Aston Villa and end his Hammers nightmare.

Zavon Hines is set to leave West Ham this summer having rejected the club's
offer of a contrcat extention. The England under-21 international is out of
contract this summer but with West Ham's relegation to the Championship,
looked set to extend his career in east London. However co-chairman David
Sullivan revealed last night that the 22-year-old striker had turned down
United's latest contract offer - and now seems certain to move on to
pastures new within the next few weeks. Hines, who has been unhappy at the
club for some time expressed his dissatisfaction with the selection policy
of former manager Avram Grant the day before West Ham's 3-2 defeat at Wigan
that confirmed the club's relegation. Talking via Twitter, he revealed that
he was "very frustrated with not being able to help my childhood club
because I'm not getting the chance to score the goals the club needs." The
young striker made his first team debut in a 4-1 Carling Cup win over
Macclesfield back in August 2008. Since then he has made just seven starts
for the first team.

Report on first meeting of the Supporter's Advisory Board
May 27th, 2011 - 10:45 am by RobertBanks
West Ham Till I Die

Yesterday I attended the inaugural meeting of the Supporter's Advisory Board
(SAB). I was in two minds whether to attend. I have, as you know, been
sceptical about the whole thing but I have always taken the view "Don't
knock it until you've tried it." I went along to see if there was anything
there that might change my view.

David Sullivan and Karren Brady were in attendance and the meeting did start
with a few words from Sullivan. I don't know what it is about this man. I
simply don't trust him. David Gold, whatever your view of him, has the air
of a respectable business man (even if he does sell dildos) but I just can't
take Sullivan seriously and on top of that, everything he says and
everything he does rub me up the wrong way.

Having said that, everything he said made perfect sense. So I have to just
put it down to a personal prejudice on my part and for that I apologise. It
is a free country and people can behave as they wish and dress how they wish
(and it matters not one iota) – but he addressed us from the stage wearing a
"Raging Bull" t-shirt, with his son sitting next to him. For some reason I
just wanted to punch him. It's probably just the frustration of this season.
It struck me that this was not being taken seriously. I just kept listening
and thinking… he's David Brent. He's going to do a little dance in a minute.

Down to brass tacks, Sullivan said what I expected him to say. He accepted
the board took full responsibility for the appointment of Grant and that
they made a mistake. He said that they were determined not to make the same
mistake and they had a list of candidates but he could not disclose too much
to us. He did say the position had already been offered to someone at £1.25m
salary and a £1.25m promotion bonus but it had been turned down. He also
said that they had agreed a package with another individual and they hoped
he would take it because he would be a very good manager – but there was a
personal issue outside of football that meant he probably would not take it.
If that individual does take the role we will find out about it today.

The question was asked about youth players being retained and Sullivan
confirmed that was the aim. However Zavon Hines' contract had expired and he
was asking for silly money to stay. He could not disclose figures but he
said that is he told us what Hines had asked for we would all be shocked. So
it's safe to say he is on his way. Jordan Spence's contract is also up and
they have made him an offer he has accepted in principle he just wants to
wait to see who is appointed as manager and whether he would be in his
plans. Otherwise the Academy players would be retained.

Sullivan took personal credit for signing Demba Ba and blamed Zola and
Clarke 100% for the signing of Benni McCarthy. He said that Zola and Clarke
came to him and said, "get us McCarthy and we will stay up." This happened
of course – but not quite in the manner anticipated.

The search for a manager may be concluded today or it may take another 2-3
weeks. However he assured us no stone was being unturned. That was the only
thing he said that I 100% believed.

Tony Carr spoke to us about the Academy and distanced himself from the
manager's vacancy.

The SAB will be divided into sub groups with specialist roles, one of which
will be a forum relating to the Olympic Stadium move. Ian Tompkins, the
Olympic Project Director gave a very informative presentation. Those firms
that have been invited to tender for the conversion works have been asked to
come up with ideas for retractable seating. They want to have it – it's just
a question of whether a viable and cost-effective solution can be found.

The stadium will be West Ham's stadium – a 150 year lease is being
negotiated – possibly longer – but the stadium will also be used by other
sports other than football and athletics. Essex CCC may play some 20-20
games there which would make it the 4th biggest cricket venue in the world.
NFL and baseball are also being considered as well as concerts and tourism,
all of which will bring in revenue for the club in terms of spin-off sales.

There will be consultation on the best way to commemorate The Boleyn Ground
and what items should be taken to the new stadium (The Lyall gates, memorial
bricks etc.) There will be a new, bigger museum on site and an SAB member's
suggestion has already been included in the plans, to allow individual fans
to exhibit their own collections of memorabilia.

Season ticket information for 2011-12 will be announced today (Friday) and
will no doubt spark its own debate. It is understood there will be a package
of measures aimed at placating those fans who feel they miss out on one-off
match promotions such as 'kids for a quid' because they have committed to a
season ticket at the start of the season. There will be discounts in the
club shop etc.

Overall, an interesting evening but the SAB has to be taken at face value –
a consultative group. The SAB will not have any powers or influence over
team matters or management matters. The SAB will be consulted over
commercial and infrastructure decisions but the decision of the board is
final. There will also be confidentiality agreements signed by those members
involved in areas of commercial sensitivity.

It was noticeable that most of the people in attendance were very positive,
not just about the SAB but about the future and the Olympic Stadium move. I
have yet to be convinced about the future and it's not in my nature to be
optimistic – but I am prepared to give things a chance before being overly
critical.

I am disappointed that the group is so large at between 80 and 120 – I feel
this could make it a little unwieldy. However it is easy to criticise and be
sceptical about these bodies until the results have been seen. I will attend
the next meeting because I did not come away last night thinking that the
group was a complete waste of time – in life you get out what you put in and
whilst I'm not happy about "branding" and "corporate identities" you have to
accept they are here to stay and I'd rather be on the inside shouting than
outside throwing stones.

West Sam United

SAM ALLARDYCE was last night finalising a deal to be the new manager of West
Ham. Big Sam was in Sunderland yesterday to watch Take That with pal Steve
Bruce.
But fans of the relegated Hammers no longer have to 'Pray' a big name will
take the reins at Upton Park. Allardyce wants in. The man who turned modest
Bolton into a Premier League force is relishing the chance to get the
Londoners back up from the Championship at the first time of asking. And
five months after being sacked by Blackburn, he is ready to return to
management as successor to Avram Grant. He has met Hammers' co-owner David
Sullivan and is promised a £1m bonus if he wins promotion. Allardyce was
hoping to get a job back in the top flight. But he is willing to spearhead
the Hammers' bid for a swift return to the Premier League.

Newcastle trying to beat Sunderland to Hammers star
Published 23:00 27/05/11 By Alan Nixon
The Mirror

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew wants to snap up Demba Ba from West Ham on a free
transfer as he tries to beat arch-rivals Sunderland to his signature. Pardew
has been alerted to the Senegalese striker's availability - and eagerness to
stay in the Premier League after the Hammers' relegation - and is putting a
lucrative deal together. Ba has a clause in his contract that allows him to
leave and is fielding offers from other clubs before informing the
relegated outfit that he wants out, as he is not keen on spending a season
in the Championship. Sunderland are also interested in Ba too, but he is
just one of several targets that Steve Bruce has earmarked for a summer
spend. Newcastle are more focused on landing him though, as they try to
replace Andy Carroll without spending a fortune. The Geordies have had a bid
for Lorient's Kevin Gameiro rejected and are unwilling to match the
£10million-plus asking price. However they would throw a lot of money at Ba
to land him without a transfer fee.

Fiery Davies could be too hot for Hammers
Published 23:01 27/05/11 By John Cross
The Mirror

Billy Davies' fiery temper could be the stumbling block between him and the
West Ham job. Hammers co-owners David Gold and Sullivan are keen on the
Nottingham Forest boss because of his record in getting teams into the
play-offs in the Championship. But Davies, who is on the brink at Forest
after failing to get them up through the play-offs, has also gained a
reputation for publicly criticising the board. That could yet see West Ham
go for ex-Bolton, Blackburn and Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce, whose price
with some bookies went to odds-on yesterday. Allardyce could also create
problems for Gold and Sullivan as he wants to bring in his own backroom
staff and have control over transfers. His style of play is also unlikely to
be popular with West Ham fans. West Ham chief Sullivan even revealed at a
supporters' meeting on Thursday that the job had been offered to a British
manager but would not say who. West Ham are now trying to clinch a deal so
the new man can being the rebuilding job for next season.

EXCLUSIVE: Irons set to name Allardyce as new boss after talks with
co-owners
By MATT LAWTON
Last updated at 1:38 AM on 28th May 2011
Daily Mail

Sam Allardyce is poised to become the new manager of West Ham. The former
Blackburn, Newcastle and Bolton boss was in talks with Hammers co-owners
David Sullivan and David Gold to tie up the finer points of an agreement.
Allardyce could be named as the successor to Avram Grant soon after
convincing the Upton Park board to back his ambitious plans to reshape the
club's squad and backroom structure. The 56-year-old has been out of work
since his shock sacking from Ewood Park in December after he fell out with
Blackburn's new Indian owners over transfer policy. But Sullivan and Gold
believe his record of delivering success on a budget makes him the right
candidate to take on the massive task of restoring West Ham to the Barclays
Premier League. They are ready to offer a salary package of £1.25million
with the same again as a bonus if he can win promotion, as he did when he
built his reputation at Bolton. Sullivan and Gold will want Allardyce to
make up the loss of revenue caused by relegation by selling players after a
disastrous season in which the club finished with just 33 points. But they
have reassured Allardyce they will support spending on fitness and analysis
infrastructure that have always been a crucial part of his methods. His
first job will be to resolve the future of Footballer of the Year Scott
Parker, goalkeeper Robert Green, defender Matthew Upson and striker Carlton
Cole. Sullivan has already warned the club would need to sell their high
earners and Allardyce will be charged with getting the best possible fees to
give himself money to replace them.

West Ham to swoop for Sam Allardyce despite Al Jazira interest - report
By Ben Somerford

Goal.com

Sam Allardyce has been heavily linked with the vacant managerial job at West
Ham despite indicating this week he's interested in coaching United Arab
Emirates (UAE) club Al Jazira. The Daily Mail reports 56-year-old Allardyce
is set to be appointed the new Hammers boss following the club's relegation
from the Premier League last week. Avram Grant was sacked as Hammers manager
after the 3-2 loss to Wigan in their penultimate game of the season which
confirmed their relegation. Earlier this week Allardyce, who hasn't worked
since being dismissed by Blackburn last December, told Sport360 he was
interested in the top job at UAE champions Al Jazira following the departure
of title-winning coach Abel Braga to Fluminense. "I am definitely
interested," said Allardyce. "I got an offer last summer for a job with Al
Ahli which is something I was interested in but unfortunately my club,
Blackburn, did not want me to leave so I couldn't move for forward with that
scenario. "So when a job comes up in that part of the world and in
particularly with Jazira it is something I would love to do. "Al Jazira have
been very successful so to take my 10 years Premier League experience into
the club would be a good match." Allardyce added: "There is no doubt that I
can bring plenty to Al Jazira to help them achieve greater success. "I can
make sure that the quality of performance that you need at all levels of a
football club, not just on the field but off the field are in place. "Once
you have seen it and done it like Al Jazira have this season then you can
look to the quality players to continue that success and ensure they improve
on what they have already achieved."

Turgott gets World Cup call
WHUFC.com
Blair Turgott has been included in England's squad for the FIFA U17 World
Cup finals in Mexico
26.05.2011

West Ham United midfielder Blair Turgott will go for FIFA World Cup glory
after being included in England's squad for the forthcoming U17 version of
football's biggest tournament. The 17-year-old has played a massive part in
helping England to qualify for the competition, which takes place in Mexico
between 18 June and 10 July. The Young Lions have been drawn in Group C
alongside Uruguay, Canada and Rwanda. Turgott helped England to progress to
the World Cup by scoring two vital goals to help his country qualify for the
UEFA European U17 Championship finals, which were held in Serbia earlier
this month. There, England reached the semi-finals, automatically qualifying
them for the World Cup. The Hammers youngster has been capped 12 times by
England at U17 level since making his debut against Sweden in October 2010,
scoring three goals. Prior to that, Turgott was capped six times at U16
level, winning the Victory Shield and reaching the final of the Montaigu
Tournament in France. Unfortunately, Turgott will not be joined at the World
Cup by club-mate and long-time England colleague Matthias Fanimo, who is
still recovering from a knee injury suffered earlier this year. However, he
will not be the only West Ham representative at the finals, as Academy
Player of the Year Dylan Tombides has been called-up by Australia. England
kick-off their campaign against Rwanda in Pachuca on 19 June before facing
Canada at the same venue on 22 June and completing their group-stage
fixtures against Uruguay in Torreon on 25 June. Australia, meanwhile, take
on Ivory Coast in Guadalajara on 20 June and Brazil in the same stadium on
23 June before moving to Queretaro for their final Group F fixture with
Denmark on 26 June.

Spector set for Gold Cup

Jonathan Spector is in the United States squad for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold
Cup
26.05.2011

Jonathan Spector has been included in the United States squad for the 2011
CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 25-year-old will appear in the tournament - the North
and Central American version of the UEFA European Championship - for the
second time, having lifted the trophy on his previous appearance in 2007.
Spector is one of eleven squad members to have won the trophy previously and
one of seven English-based players in Bob Bradley's 23-man selection. The US
will begin Group C play on 7 June against Canada at Ford Field in Detroit,
Michigan, before taking on Panama on 11 June at Raymond James Stadium in
Tampa, Florida. The group stage will end on 14 June against Guadeloupe at
LIVESTRONG Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Before the competition begins, the
Americans will meet up on Thursday before hosting FIFA World Cup holders
Spain in a friendly in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on 4 June. Spector, capped
30 times by his country since making his debut in 2004, was a starter when
the US defeated Spain 2-0 in the last meeting between the two nations at the
FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa in June 2009. The Illinois native
has enjoyed a fine season for West Ham United, making 21 appearances,
scoring four goals and collecting the Individual Performance of the Season
award for his outstanding display in the 4-0 Carling Cup victory over
Manchester United in November. Spector is one of two West Ham players set to
appear at the Gold Cup, as Pablo Barrera has been named in Mexico's squad
for the tournament. The Mexicans are in Group A alongside Costa Rica, El
Salvador and Cuba.

* Meanwhile, Danny Gabbidon and Jack Collison were both unused substitutes
on Wednesday night - along with former club-mates James Collins and Craig
Bellamy - as Wales lost 3-1 to Scotland in Dublin. The duo could figure when
the Welsh play Northern Ireland on Friday night.

Sullivan reveals two job offers

David Sullivan revealed tonight that he has offered the vacant managerial
position to two candidates within the last 48 hours. West Ham's co-chairman,
speaking at the inaugural Supporters' Advisory Board meeting at the Boleyn
Ground tonight told the audience that one manager has rejected the offer -
whilst another is set to give his answer within the next 24 hours.

However Sullivan also admitted that he expected the offer - a £50,000 per
week contract plus a £1million-plus bonus for achieving promotion - to be
refused once again; news which will no doubt delight the tabloid press, who
have made the most of some of the club's - and the board's - ill-advised
decisions of late. The meeting was chaired by Sullivan who was assisted by
vice-chair Karren Brady, Olympic Stadium director Ian Tompkins and Academy
Director Tony Carr, who was recently voted as supporters' second choice to
replace Avram Grant behind Martin O'Neill.

A range of questions on the club's future were answered; we'll bring you

West Ham's next manager. Dowie - whose sixth and most recent management
position ended after just two months in 2010 when he led Hull City to
relegation from the Premier League - told Sky Sports that he would be
extremely interested should the club come calling. "Anybody would be silly
not to be interested in a club like West Ham," he said. "You never know if
you will get that call or not, but I sense they may go for a slightly bigger
name and look to make a statement. You would understand that and there is no
problem with that. "You always think you can add a bit of a difference and
add a bit of value on the training ground. I always think it is important as
a coach to develop players and I think my record is fairly good at that.
We'll see; I've always said given the right opportunity that would be
right."

Meanwhile former Hammers striker Teddy Sheringham revealed that he was
backing temporary manager Kevin Keen to land the position full-time. "He's
a West Ham and he knows the club inside out," Sheringham told SSN. "He knows
the regime of the club and how they should play. To carry on producing the
football they're used to would be lovely to see again, so I'd give Kev a
chance." Current favourites to succeed Avram Grant on Betfair are Sam
Allardyce, Martin O'Neill and Chris Hughton. The current favourite amongst
supporters voting in a poll here on KUMB.com remains O'Neill, with Tony Carr
in second place.

Dowie keen on Hammers job
Ex-Hammers striker open to Upton Park role

Former West Ham striker Iain Dowie has admitted he would be interested in
the vacant manager's job at Upton Park. West Ham are on the lookout for a
new manager following the dismissal of Avram Grant earlier this month.
Dowie, who has been of work since leaving Hull City in the summer of 2010,
admits he would jump at the opportunity of taking charge in East London.
"Anybody would be silly not to be interested in a club like West Ham," Dowie
told Sky Sports News. "You never know if you will get that call or not, but

Player Reviews 2010/11 - Part 1

Player Reviews - 2010/11 - Part One

Here are the Player Reviews for 2010/11 Season. This 8th season running I've
done this and it started back in the Championship where we will sadly be
heading next season.

If the player has played at all during the course of the season they will be
reviewed. It may be interesting to note that West Ham have used more players
than any other Premiership Team this campaign.

We start with Goal Keepers and Defenders.

Goal Keepers

Robert Green
Like most of our players, it has been a difficult season for Robert Green.
The World Cup in South Africa went as badly as it could have done with his
terrible mistake against the USA. Coming back to Upton Park the fans really
needed to get behind him given the stick he would endure by opposition
supporters and as fans we gave him our full backing to which he seemed to
appreciate. Green kept just 5 clean sheets throughout the season as he
started 37 of the 38 league games. For the club to have kept so few clean
sheets is just another reason to why relegation was the end result. His
first mistake of the season came at home to Chelsea when he failed to hold a
shot from Drogba which eventually found its way into the goal from the
rebound.

The next league game up at Stoke saw Green look as though he had totally
fallen apart with an erratic performance as he let the Stoke fans get the
better of him. But time would be a healer for Green's season as he came back
strong against Tottenham at Upton Park making a string of wonderful saves
and keeping his first clean sheet of the season.

The fans do seem to like Robert Green and I think this is down to West Ham
fans always having a good relationship with the goal keepers at the club.
There is a bit of banter between Green and sections of the crowd and he
always acknowledges the fans. As a goal keeper he has been up and down
during the season making some great saves as we know he can but then making
rash decisions which ultimately cost us goals.

There was just the one penalty stop this season as he saved a Matthew
Etherington Penalty in the second half of a FA Cup Quarter final game at
Stoke City. As team performances got worse, Green became more frustrated
which all seemed to come to a head against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium when
after a Bolton goal he proceeded to square up to team mate Mark Noble in an
unsavoury sight.

Green always comes across to me as a bit of an odd character and quite a
moody one at that. All that stuff with having 'England's Number Six'
actually sown on to his gloves did raise an eyebrow as I could not get into
that way of thinking. Yes, he may have said it to the press as a joke and
had some banter with the fans but to go as far as getting this on your
gloves always surprised me a little.

Green is a superb shot stopper and the way he was treated by England for one
mistake would surely have knocked anyone's confidence. He has played 196
times for the club and has become a mainstay of our team. I like Robert
Green and have been happy to have him as our goal keeper. With relegation it
would seem as though he will be leaving in the coming weeks but it wouldn't
shock me to see him in our starting line up come August.

In the Championship you need a good goalkeeper and Robert Green is as good
as any in the English game. If he does move on in the Summer he is one
player I am happy to thank for his effort he has put in at West Ham and he
can go away with this reputation at West Ham in tact and I think Green will
be remembered fondly by the West Ham supporters

Apps: League 37 (starts) Cup 7 (Starts)
Verdict: A tough season for him with many goals conceded. Playing with an
ever changing defence in front of him hasn't help. I fear he may be one of a
number of players leaving in the summer.

Marek Stech
Stech seemed to go into the season as our Number 2 keeper and made his full
debut in the League Cup tie at home to Oxford United where he kept a clean
sheet and put in a solid performances making a couple of good saves from
long range efforts. Manager Avram Grant kept faith with him in the next
League Cup tie which was a tricky trip to Sunderland where again Stech
performance admirably and looked as though he would have that number two
slot for all of the season.

The League Cup was proving to be his way into the side and in the next round
he took his place between the sticks again against Stoke City in the 3-1
victory after extra time. He found his game a little more tough with a
couple of static moments but all in all it was another decent display from
what seemed a competent keeper.

But then we signed Belgian Goal Keeper Ruud Boffin and from 20th November
2010, Stech was not named in a squad again. This seems to be because if he
plays two more games we will owe his former club Sparta Prague 600k. What
this means to his future at West Ham I do not know but it does not look good
and I would be surprised if he was retained this summer simply due to that
payment we would have to make.

Apps: Cup 3
Verdict: Looked a decent enough keeper and is only 21 years of age but with
a 600k payment needed if he plays two more games I cannot see our owners
investing this in him.

Ruud Boffin
23 year old Belgian Boffin was brought in as cover for Robert Green. He
signed from Dutch side MVV Maastricht for an undisclosed fee on a two year
contract.
He made his debut away at Blackburn Rovers after Robert Green was out
through injury. It was a tough baptism of fire for the young keeper to be
thrown in at the deep end in an important league fixture.

He made a few good saves although looked very suspect at crosses (which many
young keepers are) and was very unlucky with the one goal he conceded after
he had made a superb stop to keep the initial shot out. Having not watched
any reserve games it is difficult for me to comment on his ability as we
just haven't seen enough of him. But if the new manager continues to rate
him we may see more of him next season.

Defenders

Lars Jacobsen
The Danish right back was signed on Transfer Deadline day from Blackburn
Rovers on a free transfer and a one year contract. To why Blackburn were
happy to let a player leave to go to another Premiership team for free did
strike me as odd initially but given that Jacobsen is not exactly anything
special makes it seem a little more understandable.

At the time of his signing we were desperate for a right back. Why we had
not been able to get one in earlier I do not know as it was Winston Reid who
had started the season away at Aston Villa in the right back slot an put in
a woeful performance. With only Julien Faubert in the squad who could play
in this position (I use the word 'play' lightly) Jacobsen and West Ham
seemed the perfect fit.

In his first few games he looked solid and dependable with a good ability in
the tackle despite having no pace. But as we saw as the months went on
Jacobsen was your quintessential footballer with nothing about him. On
uninteresting statistic is that Jacobsen did not receive one booking over
the course of the season. For a right back who would be used to challenging
wingers I found this surprising.

It is difficult to even remember a game where he had an impact although his
best games came in both the home and away matches against Tottenham
especially in the home game when the over hyped Gareth Bale could not find a
way past the no nonsense Dane and was totally snuffed out.

An inoffensive player and one who if he leaves will be forgotten quickly.

Apps: League 22 (1 sub) Cup 2
Verdict: A desperation signing at the time when we had failed to bring in a
full back of decent quality. Filled the gap well enough but in a season
where our defence was truly awful I wouldn't expect another deal for
Jacobsen.

Julien Faubert
Voted the WHO Hammer Of The Year runner up last season and with no right
back bought in during the summer it seemed as though Faubert was going to
see a lot more action in this position. Oddly he started the season as an
attacking right winger away at Aston Villa where he was dreadful. He
reverted back to the right back position for the following game bus as time
went on you could see how weak he was and how desprately we needed to
replace him. Jacobsen came in and Faubert hardly played again coming in and
out of the side depending on if Jacobsen was injured or cup tied.

The last game he took any part in is when he started away at Everton in the
2-2 draw. And then he was out of the team completely with even centre half
James Tomkins being preferred to him at right back.

Faubert's West Ham career has been pretty poor since he signed for big money
back in 2007. Injury hampered his first season and then we saw how bad he
was as an attacking right winger he simply reverted to right back because we
had no one else. I think he is a poor player and has a horrible attitude. I
cannot wait to see him leave the club but I do not see who would take him on
at this moment in time because he must be on an outrageous wage given the
money we were spending at the time of his signing.

He can't attack, he can't defend - what good is he to West Ham?

Apps: League 7 (2) Cup 7
Bookings: 2
Verdict: Lost his place to an average player which tells you everything you
need to know about the waste of time that is Julien Faubert.

Jordan Spence
Spence made his debut at the back end of last season coming on as a sub in
the final game. He played 12 times for the reserve team this season and was
sent out on loan to Championship side Bristol City in March 2011 where he
played 11 times.

With injuries mounting up in defence Avram Grant recalled him from his loan
spell and surprisingly thrust him into the team for the crucial away game at
Wigan. It was a strange decision for Grant to make (although he made many)
and Spence struggled to cope with the pace of the game with Wigan focussing
most of their attacks down his side.

He is a player who continues to develop and I don't think we have really
seen how good or bad he is at this point. With our relegation Spence looks
certain to feature in the next campaign as he aims to make the right back
slot his own.

Apps: League 2
Verdict: Has gained Championship experience with a couple of club over the
last few season and will look to cement his place in our team.

Tal Ben Haim
After much speculation Ben Haim finally signed for the club in August on
loan from recently relegated Portsmouth. The deal was a loan spell till
January with a view to make the move permanent. His first few games were
largely poor displays with him looking very erratic and uneasy when on the
ball

His performance up at Wolves saw him start at left back and look a liability
for most of the game. He was played at right back, centre half and left back
in his short time at the club. In fact he started just eight games.

Ben Haim put in his best performance in the cup demolition of Manchester
United when he played at left back and was superb. He was strong in the
tackle and bullied the Manchester United winger Bebe who looked as though he
was going to burst into tears when Ben Haim dumped him to the floor.

As the games went on I thought Ben Haim looked quite decent and although he
was in the defence who were crushed 5-0 at Newcastle I was thinking we would
keep him on when January came around but with the club wanting to bring in
two other domestic loan signings (Bridge and Keane) Ben Haim was the fall
guy and was returned to Portsmouth, missing out on the registration deadline
and not playing any club football again.

Ben Haim was obviously way past his best, but he did a decent job in the
time he was at the club and just as he was finding some decent form he was
sent packing.

Winston Reid
The Official site kept us guessing about the World Cup International star we
were about to sign and it was all a little anti climatic when it turned out
to be 22 year old New Zealand International Winston Reid. In fairness he did
play in the World Cup and he did score a goal for his country, but I don't
know about anyone else, but I knew f*ck all about who he was or what he was
like as a player.

We were told he was a centre half and that he as signed for an undisclosed
fee apparently in the region of £4m. It is now that you can't help but think
that figure must be way off and was simply some sort of Savio spin to make
out we are spending money.

Reid was picked to start in the opening fixture at Aston Villa but instead
of playing at centre half he was playing at right back and he had one of
those nightmare debuts. He hadn't played in any of our Pre Season fixtures
so to be chucked in (Grant would do this with Spence later in the season)
seemed an odd selection. Reid was subsequently taken apart by any player who
wanted to take him on and was promptly dropped from the starting line up for
the next game.

In fact Reid wouldn't take part in another game until 27th November when we
played Wigan at Upton Park and he came on as a 50th minute substitute for
the injured Lars Jacobsen.

He would have to wait until January to make another appearance as he was
brought on as a 90th minute sub when we were leading 2-1 at Goodison Park
and whilst it was not all his fault, his missed tackle did end up leading to
the equaliser.

All in all Reid had been struggling and has made no impact on the team
whatsoever. He looked far from gaining a first team place but with injuries
to Upson, Gabbidon and Tomkins he was called upon to play in his preferred
position of Centre Half.

He started two games in a row against Birmingham at Upton Park and away at
the Hawthorns in the 3-3 draw with West Brom. He was awful in both and
scored a terrible own goal in the game against West Brom.

Quite frankly Winston Reid has looked pretty damn awful since coming to the
club and despite scoring his first goal in the FA Cup Game against Burnley I
have not exactly been impressed with him.

I would suspect he will be here next season, but despite dropping down a
division he needs to make massive improvements.

Verdict: Hyped up by the club in the summer but has been poor in his few
displays.

James Tomkins
I like Tomkins and think he is an excellent defender who may be prone to the
odd mistake but has worked hard to cut these out of his game. He may not
look it but the boy can put in as tough a performance as you need your
centre half to display. He tackles hard and not afraid to battle with bigger
centre forwards who look to bully him out of the game.

He had a tough start to the season playing poorly against Aston Villa and
being dropped from first team action. Tomkins actually didn't start again
until the end of November against Wigan. He deserved his chance in the game
and didn't look back, starting many of the remaining games.

Tomkins put in a great display against Everton and I stated in my report:
"Another warrior like performance from Tomkins who really knows how to dig
in. He was tough and solid and threw himself at everything. Brilliant once
again."

Disappointingly he only managed to score one goal and that game in the 1-3
home defeat to Manchester City.

Tomkins was played at right back by Avram Grant in the FA Cup Quarter final
at Stoke and did have a poor game (although he should have been awarded a
penalty) and was unlucky to be dropped for the next few games in another
bizarre Avram Grant decision. He has expressed his desire to stay at the
club and I for one am very happy about this because James Tomkins gives
everything he has when he is wearing a West Ham shirt and I think he has a
lot of ability which I am sure we will be seeing next season.

Apps: League 18 (1) Cup: 9

Verdict: Tough season at times but he continues to develop into a good
player.

Danny Gabbidon
I was surprised he was here at the start of the season as I would have
thought moving on would have been best for both player and club. But he
stayed at the club and played a lot of game during the season. Gabbidon
started 24 league games which compared to his 8 from last season it was a
much better season in terms of overcoming his injury problems.

He had to fill in at left back with the lack of a replacement for Herita
Ilunga. Gabbidon has bags of experience but looked as shaky as a teenager in
certain games with his backtracking and poor anticipation.

It remains to be seen whether the Welsh International will be offered a new
deal as his contract is out this summer. I still find it hard to believe we
are talking about the same player who won Hammer Of The Year in 2005/06
season. He was so impressive during that campaign and if he does leave
during the summer w will have fond memories of one great season.

Criticism of his performances on Twitter saw a strong worded reply from
Gabbidon and a fine from the FA for his comments. Injuries have taken their
toll and although he seems to have overcome this Gabbidon is not a player
you feel comfortable having at the heart of your defence.

Apps: League 24 (2) Cup 1
Bookings: 4
Verdict: You should feel pleased having a player of his experience in the
side but he hasn't shown consistent good form during the season.

Manuel Da Costa
It seemed as though Da Costa had cemented his place at centre half when he
went on a six game in row starting place but off the field problems
involving an incident at a night club halted his progress and he could very
well serve a prison sentence later in the year. Da Costa is an excellent
defender in the air and he wins a large percentage of headers when up
against all types of defenders. When the opposition side would play the ball
long I thought Da Costa was generally dominant.

The thing with Da Costa is if you get a player up against him with any sort
of decent movement he struggles to anticipate their action and often looks
all over the place.
After losing to Arsenal on October 30th 2010, Da Costa would not start
another game for the club until 7th February 2011 away at West Brom in the
3-3 which he and Reid at the centre of the defence were quite terrible.

A few games later away at Tottenham he performed really well but in the
Manchester United home game we would see the best and worst of him as he
marked Rooney out of the game in the first period only to fall apart in the
second half and Rooney scored a hat trick. Despite his inconsistent displays
I believe Da Costa is a good centre half and capable of getting better. This
of course all depends on whether he gets sent down for another display of a
football being a complete idiot.

He would be an excellent player to have in the Championship.

Apps: League 14 (2) Cup 3
Goals: League 1 Cup 1

Verdict: Missing for a large period which was a shame as he was beginning to
show some good form. Would be great to keep him.

Matthew Upson
It is easy to point the finger at Matthew Upson for part in our downfall
given that he is the Captain and a highly paid one at that. Upson has taken
a lot of flak when maybe it was a little unfair at times but when you have a
player like Scott Parker in the team questions will be asked about the
passion shown from the player who has been designated as the one to lead the
side on the pitch.

For me Upson has had a poor season not because of his lack of desire but
because he is simply getting older and has past his best. I think we saw
some of his best during his first couple of seasons at the club but the
performances have been getting worse and he looks slow and mistake prone.

I can't help but think he had a bit of World Cup syndrome in that he reached
a height of his career by playing for his country in the World Cup (despite
how shit the display was) which is much what happened to Trevor Sinclair all
those years ago when it just seemed as though something had been lost when
he came back from World Cup duty and that little bit extra to give in games
was lost.

Maybe I am wrong when I say he lacked passion because there were games where
we needed him to drive the team on and pick them up when a goal had been
conceded but instead he seemed sedated and past caring.

It is hard to really know what has gone on behind the scenes and I can only
really comment on what I have seen on the pitch over the course of the
season but something with Matthew Upson wasn't right. When the club needed a
player to spout some pro club rubbish they would reel out Scott Parker or
maybe another player but never Upson.

Around February time Upson seemed to be picking up form like the rest of the
team but this all seemed to end away at Bolton where he put in a quite
shocking first half performance and in the subsequent game against Aston
Villa he was misjudging the flight of the ball and constantly messing up his
clearances. As I said, it might be too easy to dig out Upson just because he
isn't a shouter on the pitch and doesn't go diving into tackles, but I
cannot help but feel he could have done a lot more to get us through the
season, and just think he didn't do enough. His contract is out at the end
of the season and even if we had stayed up I do not think may supporters
would be eager to see him stay,

Apps: League 30 Cup 4
Bookings: 4
Verdict: The Club Captain struggled for a lot of the season and despite
still being a solid if unspectacular centre half his time at West Ham has
come to an end.

Herita Ilunga
The good people of WHO voted Ilunga their Player Of The Season in 2008/09
season. He then signed a permenant contract with the club, had a dire season
in 2009/10 and had another awful campaign this time around. In fact he has
been so out of form he didn't even make the 25 man squad in January and had
to sit out the rest of the season as he was not elgable to play. This says
it all about how bad he has become and surely his time at the club is over.
He started the season in the left back slot but had a nightmare against
Villa and in the next game at home to Bolton he wasn't much better.

Once the first four games were played he found himself out of the side but
came back for a run of four games between the end of October and into
November. With no other left back option (having got rid of the promising
Daprela in the summer) we were having to play centre halves Tal Ben Haim and
Danny Gabbidon at left back.
Rumours also began to circulate that Ilunga was not the 29 years of age that
he claimed to be and was in fact well into his thirties. This may also
explain him being dumped from the squad completely.

Whatever has happened it is just another in the long line of West Ham f*ck
ups and Ilunga is a player that regardless of our Premiership status needed
to be offloaded.
His last performance for the club came in the FA Cup game against Nottingham
Forest but with Wayne Bridge having just signed as few days later Ilunga
would find that he was not longer needed by the squad.

Apps: League: 10 (1) Cup 1
Bookings: 1
Verdict: Loss of form and the fact he is 46 years old all mean that Ilunga
had another awful season and the sooner we see the back of him the better.

Wayne Bridge
Signed on loan from Manchester City in the January Transfer window with the
club picking up his alleged 90k a week wage the signing of Bridge I thought
was something of a coup as there are not that many better left backs than
him in the Premiership. His debut against Arsenal reminded many of a certain
Scott Minto as he was at fault for all three goals and looked so bad it was
almost laughable.

But the following game at Everton he looked much better and the following
games at Blackpool and West Brom saw him play very well as he was almost
playing as an attacking left winger the amount he got forward. As the team
started to lose form Bridge found himself to eager to get forward and was
caught the wrong side of the attacking players too often and some of these
occasions led to goals.

Given that we were eventually relegated the signing of Bridge will probably
go down as a failure but I saw enough of him to know that he is a good
player who will get in to many Premiership sides starting elevens. I think
if we had have retained our Premiership status the owners would have made
every attempt to secure his services on a permanent basis. But as it is this
expensive gamble didn't work out and like Robbie Keane will not be missed by
the West Ham fans.

Apps: League 15 (1) Cup 3
Verdict: Looked good at times and seemed to have solved our left back
problem, but he was brought in to ensure we stayed up - and we didn't.

Part 2 will be up in a few days time.

ASTON VILLA have joined the race to sign Scott Parker. The midfielder is
sure to leave relegated West Ham this summer with Tottenham and Liverpool
are leading the chase. But ambitious Villa are ready to fight for the
£10million-rated ace. Parker is 30 and the Midlands club have previously
targeted younger players with more of a sell-on value. But his performances
in a struggling side could persuade owner Randy Lerner to part with his
cash. Villa will raise money from the sale of winger Ashley Young should he
get the £15m move he wants to one of the Champions League-chasing clubs.

Billy Davies in frame for West Ham job

Billy Davies last night emerged as a shock contender for the West Ham job.
Nottingham Forest boss Davies has been left on the brink at the City Ground
after the club's defeat in the Championship play-offs. But West Ham are
believed to be keen on him, despite also lining up ex-Bolton, Blackburn and
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce for Upton Park. West Ham co-owner David
Sullivan even told a fans' group on Thursday night that a British manager
had been offered the job, but admitted there were factors blocking an
immediate appointment. Sullivan refused to name the candidate. Fiery Scot
Davies has had his problems and fall-outs at Forest but has a proven track
record of leading clubs into the play-offs and to promotion. Allardyce had
seemed to be red-hot favourite, but it is understood that he has made it
clear that he wanted complete control of transfers and permission to bring
in his own backroom staff. Davies however, may not be a popular appointment
with the fans as the club know that supporters have reservations about his
style of football.

West Ham report Sunderland for 'approach' to Demba Ba
BBC.co.uk
Page last updated at 18:14 GMT, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 19:14 UK

West Ham have reported Sunderland to the Premier League for an illegal
approach for striker Demba Ba. The Hammers believe the Black Cats have
contacted Ba, who is still under contract at Upton Park, about a move north,
without their consent. Sunderland have denied that they have approached the
Senegal international.
The Premier League has said it has received a complaint from West Ham and
will investigate the matter to see "if there is a case to answer". A
Sunderland spokesman said: "Sunderland AFC is fully aware of the Premier
League regulations pertaining to player recruitment. "If we are interested
in any player currently under contract with another club, we will speak
directly to that club, in line with the regulations."

Premier League regulations state that a club cannot approach a contracted
player at another club, directly or indirectly, without written consent. Ba
is among a group of West Ham players whose futures look to lie away from
Upton Park, following the club's relegation from the Premier League. The
26-year-old, who scored seven goals for West Ham, has been linked to a
number of Premier League clubs after impressing since his move from German
club Hoffenheim in January.

Ba-d form: Sunderland accused of illegal approach

West Ham are understood to have made an official complaint regarding an
illegal approach from Sunderland for striker Demba Ba. The reason for
United's complaint is as yet unknown, however Sunderland boss Steve Bruce
admitted during his post-match press conference at the Boleyn last Sunday
that he was interested in signing the Senegalese front man. When asked by a
journalist to confirm Sunderland's interest in Ba following the Black Cats'
3-0 victory, Bruce replied: "Sorry? Can I confirm my interest in Demba Ba?
I'm skint as a brick! I think I've been linked with 50 players. "My job is
to go and knock on the owners door again and keep improving us. I'll see
what we've got and what we've got to spend and hopefully improve the squad,
which we need to. But he's one that we're looking at."

Ba is one of two senior players - the other being German midfielder Thomas
Hitzlsperger - to have been offered new contracts by the club in the last
week. News of West Ham's complaint was met by a stern rebuffal from
Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn, who this afternoon denied any wrongdoing.

Another Abject Performance, as a Twist Emerges on Hitzlsperger and
Ancelotti!
May 26th, 2011 - 3:39 am by S J Chandos
West Ham Online

I really do not wish to comment much on another abject team performance last
Sunday. All the same faults were apparent that conspired to condemn us to
relegation. I thought that the team came out and passed the ball really
well, but there was no end product and the same old defensive problems
resulted in an embarrassing 0-3 defeat. I have experienced relegation from
the top tier five times since 1978 and this one is probably the most gutless
and demoralising of the lot. At least on previous occasions, such as 1989
and 2003 they went down fighting, unlike this incompetent, gutless, clueless
episode! Anyway, enough said on that, lets try to look to the future.

The board need to get the right manager in place and there is a hell of a
lot of work to be done over the summer and pre-season to get us in a shape
to achieve automatic promotion. It is going to be challenging, but not
impossible for the right manager. The new name to have recently emerged is
Alex McLeish, who is a former appointee of Gold and Sullivan at Birmingham
City. With Brum's last day fall from the PL, it was inevitable that the
link would be made by the media. However, it now appears to be a
non-starter with Brum's subsequent confirmation that McLeish will remain
their manager next season.

Undoubtedly, the most intriguing 'link' is to Ancelotti, after his rather
unfair dismissal from Chelski. It has been alleged that Chelski may have a
clause in his contract that, in the event of dismissal, he cannot take up
another PL managerial position for the following season! If so, and
Ancelotti wishes to stay in England, the West Ham link makes some sort of
sense. Perhaps he wants to continue manging in this country, rather than
just seeing his year out on his pay off from Chelski or moving abroad?
Alternatively, it is a 'non-story' and, in reality, a complete non-starter,
which seems far more likely to be honest.

However, Sullivan's statement that a British manager would be recruited
appears to rule him out anyway (if nothing else does!). Or could there be a
rapid change of heart if such a top class managerial appointment became
possible? Its all conjecture at the moment, and I am sure that Ancelotti
will have plenty of offers from Serie A to return home, but I thought that
it was an interesting (if unlikely) moot point. Putting aside our
incredulity for a moment, how would Mr Ancelotti cope with Championship
football? Would his knowledge of players at that level be sufficient for
our needs or would he need assistance on that front? How would he deal with
the peculiar difficulties of managing at West Ham Utd FC, under the current
regime? Ancelotti, the Champions League and English double PL and FA Cup
winning manager, taking the reins at relegated West Ham Utd FC. What an
intriguing and out of left field prospect!

Then back down to earth, with a mighty bump, SSN reckon that Dave Jones is
the man that Gold and Sullivan want for next season. I tend to hope that
this is not the case. Jones will keep us afloat in the Championship and
will probably get us there or there abouts, in the top half of the
Championship table, but is he going to win us automatic promotion? I, like
the majority of Hammers fans, remain to be convinced of that score. David
Gold has since confirmed that no approach has been made to Cardiff City
about acquiring Jones' services. At the same time, Martin O'Neill has now
settled his dispute with Aston Villa and that will no doubt result in an
approach from West Ham. Whether that approach will ultimately be successful
remains to be seen? To stand any chance, the West Ham board need to give
O'Neill assurances about his control over the football side of affairs,
financial support and keeping public statements about management and squad
issues under control.

Regardless, it has now emerged that Hitzlsperger and Ba have been offered
new deals to stay at West Ham next season. Rumour has it that there will
also be an improved contract offer to Robert Green shortly, although another
has him preparing to talk to Villa in the next week or so. What a boost it
would be if two of those three could be persuaded to give us a year to get
back in to the PL. Even if Scott Parker leaves, which looks very likely,
it would definitely improve our chance of automatic promotion. I have been
consistently arguing that we needed to try to convince at least two of our
experienced stars to stay. And Sullivan and Gold appear to be trying to do
just that. The good news is that there are reports emerging that Thomas
Hitzlsperger may agree to stay next season. They state that Hitzlsperger
feels, after his long injury absence, that he owes West Ham a full season.
That would seem to fit in with what he know of Thomas Hitzlsperger, who
comes across as both an intelligent and principled fellow. A bit of a rarity
in the modern game!

While Ba could possibly be open to persuasion if the terms are right. It is
clear that West Ham have prioritised retaining Ba, hence their complaint to
the PL about an alleged illegal approach by Sunderland. The Sunderland
Manager has followed up his provocative statement that last Sunday's match
was effectively a 'scouting mission,' by openly admitting his interest in
Ba. That is not acceptable under PL rules. Although Spurs have done
exactly the same thing with regard to their interest in Scott Parker, yet
West Ham have not complained about that!

Another report alleges that Stoke City are interested in signing free agent
Victor Obinna. That's an interesting link, one wonders how Obinna would get
on with Stoke City's particular playing style. He would certainly need to
pull his weight in a Tony Pullis side (and possibly learn to head the
ball!!). However, a lot of our players are being linked with Stoke City, so
far the count includes Cole, Ba, Collison, Noble and, now, Obinna. Even if
there are offers forthcoming, I would advise any available Hammers players
to stay well clear of that crew! And the board must place that embargo
publicly on the sale of Collison, Noble, Tomkins, etc. That is imperative!

I see that Watford's Danny Graham has attracted at £2.5m bid from QPR. That
is a player that should should be considering, a centre forward that got 25
goals in the Championship in the past season. Another is Shane Long, whose
future is likely to be decided by the Championship play off final.
Personally, I have a feeling that it could be Swansea's year to enter the PL
land of milk and honey! If so, then Shane Long could become a realistic
target if we move swiftly after the play off final. Regardless, any such
moves are dependent upon the forthcoming managerial appointment, but that is
the way in which we need to proceed, bag one or two 20 plus goals a season
strikers, who are proven at that level, but also young and promising enough
to potentially make a successful transition to PL football. Another name
linked with us is Jay Boothroyd, who is apparently available this summer on
a free transfer. He can certainly perform well at Championship level, but
we will have to wait and see?

Anyway, these are some of the more intriguing links, real or imaginary,
doing the rounds at the moment. The Sunderland match was a depressing
climax to a terrible season. Lets hope that we can get a good managerial
appointment soon and start looking forward to being more positive about
promotion next season. I know it seems difficult to envisage now, but
Newcastle Utd bounced back and so can we. We just need to pray that the
co-owners understand that decimating the squad may generate initial funds,
but will also undermine their chances of getting back on the PL gravy train.
Personally, I feel that they must bank roll a concerted promotion push next
season, after all they have a awful lot riding on it. I have concerns at
the way that the club is being run, and the consequences for the reputation
of the club, but I do not accept the conspiracy theory that says that
relegation was purposely sought by the board. Critique of the way that the
club is being run can be both constructive and productive, but ultimately
we need to avoid lapsing in to obsession.

Finally, we also need to await the outcome of the negotiation with Tony
Fernandez. His investment in the remaining c. 38% stake in the club could
bring greater stability, hopefully by taking the remaining Icelandic
interests out of the equation, and generating additional funds. It might
even have a positive influence on the current board, having a new
personality like Fernandez involved, with a different business style and
approach. Lets hope that it happens soon, although no doubt neither side is
likely to stay roll over and it could prove to be a tough and protracted
negotiation.

If it does not happen, what about Mittal? If he fails to achieve a buy out
at QPR, he could do lot worse than to sell his stake in QPR and transfer
his investment from west to east London. Now Mittal would certainly have
the serious wealth to buy out the current owners, pay down the debt and
invest in the playing staff. Yet another intriguing, if unlikely,
proposition!

Black Cats deny Ba tap-up
Published: 25 May 2011
The Sun

SUNDERLAND have denied tapping up West Ham striker Demba Ba after being
reported to the Premier League by the Hammers. A Premier League spokesperson
confirmed that they are looking into an alleged illegal approach. They said:
"We have received a letter from West Ham United. We will look into their
complaint to see if there is a case to answer." But the Black Cats insists
they are innocent and would seek permission from any club they were looking
to buy from. A statement from the club read: "Sunderland AFC is fully aware
of the Premier League regulations pertaining to player recruitment. "If we
are interested in any player currently under contract with another club, we
will speak directly to that club, in line with the regulations."

Ba, 26, scored seven goals in the Hammers' failed bid to avoid the drop
following a January move from German club Hoffenheim.

WEST HAM co-owner David Gold maintains the club have not approached Cardiff
boss Dave Jones. The Irons sacked Avram Grant after they were relegated from
the Premier League. Reports had suggested they would now move for Jones,
with the Bluebirds having lost in the Championship play-offs. However, Gold
said on Twitter: "Despite what you may have read in the papers, we have not
spoken to Dave Jones." The 54-year-old former Wolves boss also appeared to
rule himself out of the running. Jones said: "I have not had any contact
with them over the job. "I am not prepared to say anything about the

will be sitting down with the board at Cardiff and discussing my future with
them soon."

ASTON VILLA WILL HIT WEST HAM WITH A £500K BID
26th May 2011 By Peter White
Dailyu Star

WEST HAM are set to further slash their wage bill by selling Thomas
Hitzlsperger back to Aston Villa. Hitzlsperger joined the Irons from Serie A
side Lazio last summer on a three-year deal as ex-boss Avram Grant's first
signing. But the German midfielder, 29, who has 52 caps, suffered a serious
thigh injury days before the season began and was sidelined until February.
Despite scoring on his debut, Hitzlsperger, nicknamed the Hammer, failed to
save West Ham from the drop. Hitzlsperger is poised to rejoin Villa in a
cut-price deal for around £500,000. He signed for Villa from Bayern Munich
in 2000 and played more than 100 games. And he will be the latest big name
to leave Upton Park after Matthew Upson and Kieron Dyer were told they are
no longer wanted.

ARSENAL PULL OUT OVER SCOTT PARKER
26th May 2011 By David Woods
Daily Star

ARSENAL have pulled out of the running for Scott Parker and now want French
league superkid Eden Hazard. Starsport revealed how Arsene Wenger targeted
Parker after West Ham's relegation. But the player's recent injury problems
made the Arsenal boss back off, particularly as Tottenham and Liverpool's
interest could push the price up. Instead, he has turned to Lille's Belgium
international Hazard, 20, who is France's Footballer of the Year following
his club's title success. He is an attacking midfielder who Lille value at
around £30m. Wenger may also bid for Aston Villa's England winger Stewart
Downing. He knows fans want to see English talent at the club and they will
be upset at him backing off Parker

Tombides targets new highs
WHUFC.com
Academy Player of the Year Dylan Tombides is aiming to continue his
development over the summer
25.05.2011

It has been quite a season for Dylan Tombides. The first-year scholar, who
only turned 17 in March, has made his mark at reserve-team level, was
included in first-team squad for Sunday's Barclays Premier League visit of
Sunderland and is now looking forward to representing Australia at the FIFA
U17 World Cup. The Perth-born striker capped a memorable 2010/11 by being
named as the Academy Player of the Year - sponsored by Hermex International
Limited - by Academy Director Tony Carr. "It's been a great season," said
Tombides. "I'm very happy with my development so far. It's all about getting
a chance and taking it and I think I've done that well this season. "A lot
of hard work has gone in behind the scenes. I spend a lot of time in the gym
and when I get home I'm really tired. It's all about going to bed and
getting some good sleep and coming back the next morning ready to go. "It
does make a big difference, I feel. I might stay around and do a little
extra that could make me a bit quicker or a bit stronger. That's what gets
you a little bit further in your life. "I am very surprised. My Dad has
noticed a big difference in my strength and it's good to know that the hard
work is paying off."

In a season of many highlights, Tombides picked out the FA Youth Cup
fourth-round meeting with Manchester United, the brace he scored in a 3-2
Barclays Premier Reserve League win over Arsenal and being named in the
first-team squad for the FA Cup fifth-round visit of Burnley as his standout
moments. "It was nice to walk out at Upton Park in the FA Youth Cup against
Manchester United. It was a shame we went out when we did because I don't
think we deserved to lose that game. "Every game I play is always a
highlight, but the one I'd probably take is scoring two against Arsenal
reserves. A lot of first-team players played so it was another good
experience for me."

"Being in the squad against Burnley was a very big thing for me. It was bit
disappointing not to be in the final squad for the game, but it was still
nice to be there and part of all of it. Being considered for that event was
a proud moment for me. "Training for the first team was both exciting and
nerve-wracking. Once you get into it, you're up and running but at first
you're just hoping you can get through the session without making youself
look like a bit of a mug! "The coaching staff and players are very nice and
kind to you, so it was good to train with them. "I just went out there and
did the best I could. If I fitted in then great, but I know I still have
things to work on."

The modest Tombides was quick to praise the influence on his career made by
Academy Director Carr and his supportive parents Jim and Tracylee. "Tony has
been a very good coach for me - you've only got to see the players who have
come through the Academy. I've only played under him for a season so far,
but you can see I have come a long way under his eye, which is a testament
to him. "My family and friends have always been encouraging me, too. I'm
very thankful to them because they're always around to help me out and
without them I wouldn't be where I am today."

Looking forward, Tombides, who netted nine goals in 32 appearances this
season, is eager to continue making his mark for both club and country. "I'm
very happy with what I've been gifted, but it's up to me what I do with it.
I can't just think 'I've made it'. I've still got a long way to go and to
work very hard. "I'll obviously start with the youth team next season, but
as soon as I progress I'll be very happy. At the same time, my progression
means younger players will get a chance in the youth team, which will be
very good for them and will help the club as a whole."

Tombides will enjoy a very short break before returning to training to keep
himself fit ahead of the FIFA U17 World Cup, which begins in Mexico on 18
June. While Australia are considered outsiders, the young Hammer is
confident they will give a good account of themselves. "It's a big
tournament and I'm really looking forward to it. No matter how far we go,
it'll be a great event and a good experience for us. "We have got a lot of
things to work on, but I'm confident we'll do all right. We won't be rolled
over. Australians don't lie down. We'll always fight to the end and that
might get us the last-minute goal that could take us through."

The way his season has gone, you can bet Tombides will be the player who
scores it.

Eoin Wearen helped the Republic of Ireland make a winning start to their
UEFA European Under-19 Championship Elite round qualifying campaign. The
Irish were 1-0 winners against mini-tournament hosts Poland in Koszalin,
meaning they have taken a surprise hold on Group 4. Hammers midfielder
Wearen was a 66th-minute substitute, and came up against former Academy
right-back Filip Modelski, who has been released by the club. Ireland are
next in action on Friday against Ukraine before a Sunday showdown with Italy
that could prove pivotal. The group winners will go forward to the
eight-nation finals in Romania, to be played between 20 July and 1 August.

Jack back for Wales
WHUFC.com
Jack Collison and Danny Gabbidon could both be in action for their country
tonight
25.05.2011

Jack Collison is set to make his long-awaited return for Wales this evening
against Scotland in Dublin. The Hammers midfielder played in the final three
matches of the Barclays Premier League season after a 14-month absence with
a knee injury. His last international appearance came in the 1-0 defeat by
Sweden in March 2010.
Collison could get more valuable minutes under his belt tonight and on
Friday when Gary Speed's men take on Northern Ireland in the Irish capital.
However, caution will be the watchword for the Wales manager when it comes
to fielding the 22-year-old. "He will be a big boost for us," said Speed.
"Jack played his first games for West Ham and I am so pleased for him to be
back involved in the fold. We are going to have to manage him obviously. We
have a duty to look after him. Jack's welfare is the most important thing."

Collison, and compatriot Danny Gabbidon, are not the only Hammers on
international duty. Club-mate Robert Green was a late call-up for the
England squad alongside Scott Parker for the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier with
Switzerland on Saturday week. whufc.com will have full details of all the
club's internationals over the coming fortnight.

Academy pair right at home
WHUFC.com
Sebastian Lletget and Cristian Montano are enjoying life at West Ham
United's Academy House
25.05.2011

Young professionals Sebastian Lletget and Cristian Montano have spoken about
the benefits of living in the West Ham United Academy House. American
Lletget and Colombian Montano have both been with the Hammers since the age
of 16, spending much of their time living in the club's digs. There, the
youngsters share accommodation with many of their team-mates, urging each
other on and helping to foster a fantastic team spirit. Speaking to West Ham
TV, the pair spoke glowingly of the facilities at the Academy House, as well
as the support and care afforded them by resident hosts Bob and Val Rayson.
"I'm from San Francisco in California and I've been here for a year and a
half now and I really enjoy it," said Lletget. "The boys in the house are
pretty respectful of my privacy and generally really nice.
"I think it's a very big thing for any person that their surroundings are
comfortable and the house really does that for you. Bob and Val are also
here to look after us, which is good. "I think we've given up too much and
sacrificed almost everything to be here, so I think it would be foolish to
get involved in that other stuff like going out late and drinking."

Montano moved to London as a youngster, but said the Academy House offered
him a perfect base from which to pursue his dream of playing for the
Hammers.
The 19-year-old admitted that rules in the house were fairly strict, but
agreed with Lletget that the sacrifices were worth making. "The house is
good because it keeps you away from a lot of things you or trouble you might
be included in if you were living outside the house," said Montano. "You're
also live with many of the players you train with and see them day to day,
which helps you forge a spirit. "Bob and Val look after us well and we have
a curfew as well, so we have a daily routine and times when we have to be in
certain places, or else there would be consequences. "We don't know what the
consequences would be because none of us have been in trouble. We all do
what we're told to do."

The pair also talked positively about the care afforded them by the Raysons,
who have run the Academy House since it opened in 1998, the wide range of
facilities available to them and the benefits of speaking Spanish.

Martin O'Neill back on West Ham's radar after settling Aston Villa issues
Metro.co.uk

Martin O'Neill says he is keen to return to management after reaching a
settlement with Aston Villa, meaning a switch to West Ham could be back on
the cards.
O'Neill was linked with Hammers job in January, only for the Upton Park
chiefs to decide to keep the faith with Avram Grant after a botched attempt
at replacing him.
However, the former Leicester boss has now been touted again as a prime
candidate for the West Ham dug-out, after Steve McClaren ruled himself out
of the running.
The 59-year-old left Villa in August last year but the Premier League
Managers' Arbitration Tribunal was needed to settle the terms of his
departure. In a statement, O'Neill said: 'It's taken a long time but I'm
pleased all issues have been amicably finalised. I'm now looking forward to
the future and getting back into football management.' The Northern Irishman
is currently fourth favourite with the bookies behind Dave Jones, Chris
Hughton, and Sam Allardyce.

West Ham striker commits himself to the club for next season
East London Advertiser
Matt Diner
Wednesday, May 25, 2011
9:00 AM

West Ham striker Freddie Sears has committed himself to the club for next
season despite their relegation. Championship-bound Hammers are set to lose
the likes of Matthew Upson, Robert Green and Scott Parker over the summer,
but it looks likes academy graduate Sears (pictured right) is set to stay at
Upton Park. "Yeah I want to stay, I've expressed to stay. I want to stay and
get a couple of games next season. You don't know what's round the corner,"
he told the Advertiser. "Definitely as a West Ham fan I want to play for the
club. Relegation might give me a better opportunity to play for the club I
want to play for week in week out. There is probably more of an opportunity
in the Championship than the Premiership. "It could go one of two ways, I
could play every game of the season or the new manager could come in and
bring in new players. But hopefully we can keep some of the young boys and
have a real go next year."

Sears has faith that he and his fellow graduates can step up next year and
push the Hammers back into the Premier League at the first attempt and
admitted they will have to do so without some of their better-known players.
"We should try and keep as many players as we can, but its going to be
hard," he said. "The more senior players will probably move on to be honest,
but hopefully we can keep a good core of players and have a real go next
season. "You look at the boys they have brought through over the years. Tony
Carr has done a great job and he is still bringing through the boys and when
they make the step up it's not hard. "They are ready, they've had two years
in the academy and a scholarship with Tony Carr. "It makes you more hungry
coming through the academy to get on the pitch and do well."

Robert Green returns for England
25 May 2011
Evening Standard

England coach Fabio Capello was able to breathe a sigh of relief last night
when Robert Green returned to the international fold. Following Ben Foster's
decision to stand down from England duty indefinitely, there had also been a
question mark about Green's commitment to the Three Lions cause. Having
excused himself from next month's Euro 2012 qualifier with Switzerland
partly due to the impending birth of his first child but also because of the
stresses of West Ham's battle to avoid the drop, Capello had opted not to
push Green before naming his squad on Monday afternoon. However, the Italian
had named his squad without knowing Fulham's David Stockdale was due to get
married 24 hours before the Swiss encounter on June 4. Although Stockdale
had assured Capello he would report for duty, the position was nowhere near
ideal, so the England coach approached Green, whose wife has given birth and
West Ham's fate is now sealed. Had the stopper, who has not played for his
country since making that abysmal error against the United States in last
summer's World Cup, said no, Capello would have been in trouble. As it was,
Green agreed and will report for duty with the remainder of his team-mates
next Monday. It does smack of a lack of communication surrounding Capello,
who will be meeting Rio Ferdinand for the first time since handing the
captaincy back to John Terry. However, the final outcome has at least been
favourable, with Green providing competition for Joe Hart and Scott Carson,
ahead of a game England need to win to retain control over their own destiny
in what seems to be a straight qualification fight with Montenegro

Hull City insist there has been no contact from West Ham United after
manager Nigel Pearson was linked with the Upton Park vacancy. The Hammers
are searching for a new boss after ditching Avram Grant following the club's
relegation from the Premier League. Cardiff City manager Dave Jones is
understood to be the No.1 choice, but Tigers chief Pearson is also rumoured
to be on the short-list. Pearson has impressed in recent seasons, firstly at
Leicester City and now at the KC Stadium after leading Hull to 11th in the
Championship this season. However, the Tigers' head of football operations
Adam Pearson has brushed off the speculation linking his namesake with the
West Ham job. "There's been no contact from West Ham whatsoever," Adam
Pearson told the Hull Daily Mail. "All we have heard is the speculation in
the media but there's nothing more to it than that. "Our only focus is on
squad strengthening and making sure we're fully prepared for next season."

Sam Allardyce tops Hammers' list
Ken Dyer

Sam Allardyce was today emerging as the new favourite to become West Ham
manager. Allardyce, 57, was always on West Ham's list of potential
candidates, along with Martin O'Neill and Norwich boss Paul Lambert.
Allardyce has been out of work since December, when he was sacked by
Blackburn, but he still commands a great deal of respect within the English
game as one of the best and most innovative managers. O'Neill remains in the
frame for the Upton Park job but may prefer to wait for an opportunity in
the Premier League, while Lambert now looks likely to stay at Carrow Road.
It is understood, though, that West Ham's co-owners David Gold and David
Sullivan are still some way away from making a final decision as they
consider other candidates, including Dave Jones, should he leave Cardiff,
Watford's Malky Mackay, former Hammers manager Alan Curbishley and Hull's
Nigel Pearson. The club hope to make an appointment within two weeks so that
the new man can begin the process of re-shaping the playing squad in
preparation for life in the Championship

Southampton manager Jones insists neither he or Cardiff have been contacted
by West Ham about the job.

No contact

"I have not had any contact with them over the job," Jones told the East
London Advertiser. "I'm not prepared to say anything about the vacancy. I'm
still employed by Cardiff City Football Club and only thinking of them."
Jones, who is on a rolling contract at the south Wales club, has revealed he
will be holding talks with Cardiff's board about his future in the next few
days. "I will be sitting down with the board at Cardiff and discussing my
future with them soon," he added. West Ham co-owner David Gold insists the
club have not approached Jones about taking over at Upton Park. Gold said on
Twitter: "Despite what you may have read in the papers, we have not spoken
to Dave Jones."

Alan Devonshire sets Braintree Town target
BBC.co.uk

New Braintree Town manager Alan Devonshire has set the team a 50-point
target in the Blue Square Bet Premier next season. Devonshire was appointed
manager of the Essex side on Monday, after leaving his role as boss of
Hampton & Richmond. He told BBC Essex: "We're part-time, but we're going to
enjoy it and have a right old go." "We're looking for 50 points as quickly
as possible, if we can get there in February then fantastic." Braintree will
be in the top-flight of the non-league game for the first time in their
history next season. Previous manager Rod Stringer resigned from the role
less than a fortnight after the club won the Blue Square Bet South title, in
a dispute over the budget for the 2011/12 campaign. Stringer claimed the
final nail in the coffin in his departure was down to fact he was not
promised a reliable car for travelling to rivals' grounds. Devonshire
insisted that would not be a problem for him as he does not drive. He said:
"I had a two-hour lesson and didn't really like it so I decided to not
bother driving. "I've never drove, it doesn't bother me. I get around, I get
to watch lots of games, so it's not a drawback in any way." Devonshire,
whose playing career included a 14-year stay at West Ham, added: "I don't
really want to change anything, I don't think I need to. It's down to the
players if they want to stay." "I just want to make the players better, that
is my ambition."

Potts makes US bow
WHUFC.com
Youth-team defender Danny Potts has made his debut for the United States U20
side
24.05.2011

Youth-team defender Danny Potts has made his debut for the United States U20
side. Potts, a left-back, played for the final 20 minutes as a substitute in
the Americans' 2-1 friendly defeat by France in Vichy. The 17-year-old
qualifies to play for the US through his father, Hammers great Steve, who
was born in Hartford, Connecticut. All three goals had been scored before
Potts replaced Hertha Berlin player Terrence Boyd. Earlier, Derby County
forward Conor Doyle had equalised Arsenal striker Gilles Sunu's opener
before Olympique Lyonnais striker Yannick Tafer netted the winner eleven
minutes after half-time. The friendly international was the second between
the two countries, with the first match ending in a 3-3 draw. Potts was not
involved in that fixture, while West Ham club-mate Sebastian Lletget was
excused the trip to allow him to return to his native California. Having
missed out on a place at the FIFA U20 World Cup this summer, Tab Ramos's
squad are now preparing for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

England draft in West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green
BBC.co.uk
Page last updated at 20:04 GMT, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 21:04 UK

West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green has been called into the England squad for
the Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland on 4 June. The 31-year-old
replaces Fulham's David Stockdale, who is getting married the day before the
Wembley match. Stockdale is believed to have told England's management he
was still willing to join up with the squad. But coach Fabio Capello instead
opted to call up Green, who reportedly originally asked not to be
considered. It is believed that Green made the request because of off-field
distractions - the keeper's wife gave birth last Tuesday, while his club
have recently been relegated from the Premier League. Green is likely to be
third choice for the Switzerland game, behind Manchester City's Joe Hart and
Scott Carson of West Bromwich Albion. England's goalkeeping options were
reduced earlier this month when Birmingham's Ben Foster announced he was
making himself unavailable for international duty for an indefinite period.
The 28-year-old, who had been second choice behind Manchester City's Joe
Hart following last year's World Cup in South Africa, cited "niggling
injuries" and a desire to prolong his club career as the reasons for his
decision. Stockdale was first called up by Capello for February's 2-1
friendly win in Denmark in February, but was an unused substitute for the
game. He has made 10 appearances for Fulham this season, although his last
game for Mark Hughes's side was the 4-0 FA Cup victory over Spurs at the end
of January, with Mark Schwarzer the Cottagers' first-choice keeper since
then.

Rob gives Green light for return
By SHAUN CUSTIS
Published: Today
The Sun

ROBERT GREEN has answered England's SOS and returned to the international
fold. The West Ham keeper is back in Fabio Capello's squad for the Euro 2012
qualifier against Switzerland at Wembley a week on Saturday. He joins Joe
Hart and Scott Carson in the party after Fulham's reserve stopper David
Stockdale was allowed to drop out as he is getting married the day before.
Green, 31, had threatened to quit his country after failing to win a cap
since last year's World Cup howler against the USA. He told the Three Lions
staff he was ready to pack it in after the March friendly against Ghana -
when he sat on the bench for 90 minutes. He was approached about a return.
But a shocking breakdown in communication between the FA and Green led to
both sides believing they had been ignored. While Green was waiting for a
call from England chiefs, they were expecting him to contact THEM. As a
result, and with Ben Foster taking an international break, Stockdale was
named. When Stockdale's dilemma was brought to their attention, England went
back to ask Green again - and he agreed to join up.

WEST HAM are in talks with defender Danny Gabbidon about a new contract for
next term's Championship campaign.

Stoke winning race to sign West Ham star
Published 22:58 24/05/11 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Stoke have moved ahead of West Brom, QPR and Newcastle in the race to sign
Carlton Cole. The Potters have already started to follow up their
well-documented interest in the £9million-rated England striker with Europa
League football a big incentive for Cole to move to the Britannia Stadium.
West Ham are resigned to losing the marksman with joint-owner David Gold
admitting even before the season had ended that the England internationals
would be allowed to leave.

Bruce confirms Sunderland interest in £7m West Ham star
Published 22:57 24/05/11 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Steve Bruce wants to sign £7million striker Demba Ba from West Ham. The
Sunderland boss confirmed: "My job is to knock on the owner's door again and
keep improving us – and yes, he's one that we're looking at." Blackburn,
Aston Villa and Lokomotiv Moscow are also in the hunt, although the Hammers
still hope to retain Ba's services in the Championship. "We'll see what
we've got and what we've got to spend. "Hopefully we will improve the squad
which we need to do. And yes, he's one that we're looking at."

The Hammers are hoping to keep the 25-year-old Ba even though Blackburn and
Aston Villa are keen on the former Hoffenheim striker's services and have
made approaches for him. Lokomotiv Moscow are also interested with former
Chelsea midfielder Alexey Smertin - who works as an advisor for the Russian
club - ready to fly to the UK to hold discussions with Ba and his agent.

Redknapp to fund Parker purchase by flogging Jenas to QPR
Published 23:00 24/05/11 By John Cross
The Mirror

Harry Redknapp wants to fund a move for Scott Parker - by selling Jermaine
Jenas to Queens Park Rangers. Spurs boss Redknapp is desperate to snap up
West Ham midfielder Parker and is confident of getting the deal done. But
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear that Redknapp must sell
before he can buy this summer - and Jenas is wanted by QPR boss Neil
Warnock. Warnock wanted former England midfielder Jenas on a season-long
loan but Tottenham are likely to insist on a permanent switch to help pay
for Parker. Redknapp already has a wealth of midfield talent with Tom
Huddlestone, Luka Modric, Sandro and Wilson Palacios so Jenas has become
surplus to requirements. But Redknapp is keen to get 30-year-old Parker and
it is believed West Ham may sell for around £5m to help ease their financial
problems after relegation and get him off the wage bill. Redknapp has
claimed Liverpool and Arsenal are interested in Parker but both clubs
generally look at younger players and the Spurs boss is already in the box
seat. QPR want to strengthen their squad for the Premier League and Warnock
has also looked at Joe Cole who is set to leave Liverpool after just one
unhappy season at Anfield. But Jenas would provide some quality and
experience while a deal would suit Spurs as they look to shake-up their
squad.

Euro 2012: Robert Green returns as England's goalkeeping weakness is exposed
By Jeremy Wilson 10:27PM BST 24 May 2011
Follow Jeremy Wilson on Twitter

Robert Green, the West Ham United goalkeeper, answered an SOS call on
Tuesday to make a return to the England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifier
against Switzerland. On another day of confusion regarding England's
goalkeepers, it was communicated to Fabio Capello that David Stockdale, his
third-choice goalkeeper, was getting married on June 3, the day before the
Wembley match against Switzerland. Stockdale, the Fulham substitute
goalkeeper, had stressed that he would be willing to return to the squad to
deputise for Joe Hart and Scott Carson, but it was decided that it would be
fairer simply to find a replacement. Green has not played since his mistake
in the World Cup against the United States last summer and was unhappy that
he was not given a chance in the friendly against Ghana in March this year.
Hart played in that game, having also played the full 90 minutes three days
earlier in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales. It is understood that
Green held talks with England coaching staff after the Ghana game and
informed Capello that he did not want to be included in future squads. Green
made the point that the Ghana game was a friendly and an opportunity for him
to receive his first cap since the horrific World Cup error.

At the time, he also faced the added complication of his wife being due to
give birth at the end of May, just days before the Switzerland game. In the
circumstances, and with West Ham having been relegated, Capello decided that
it was better to give Green the summer off and then try to resolve the
situation next season. However, Green's wife has now given birth and, after
talks on Tuesday with the England management team, he agreed to join up with
the squad next week so that Stockdale would be free to concentrate on his
wedding. An FA statement last night said that Stockdale had "a personal
commitment in the build-up to England's Euro 2012 qualifier with
Switzerland".

The situation will again prompt questions over Capello's communication with
his players and it also highlights the dearth of goalkeeping options. Over
the past year, both Ben Foster and Paul Robinson have made themselves
unavailable for England. Foster who was relegated on Sunday with Birmingham,
announced earlier this month that he was taking an "indefinite break" from
the national squad, while Robinson retired last year because he thought he
should have been first choice.
Stockdale, 25, has been given some opportunities this season at Fulham
because of injuries to Mark Schwarzer, who was then involved in the Asian
Cup. He is not first choice at his club although he has impressed Capello,
who included him in the squad for the February friendly against Denmark.

Carson, who blundered for England in the Euro 2008 qualifier at home to
Croatia in a defeat which cost Steve McClaren his job, has endured a
difficult campaign at West Bromwich. Green's own club future is also in
doubt following West Ham's relegation to the Championship, with Aston Villa
his most likely destination next season.

FABIO CAPELLO'S IN KNOTS AS ROBERT GREEN GETS CALL
Daily Express
Wednesday May 25,2011
By Paul Joyce and Matt Law

FABIO CAPELLO'S goalkeeping farce intensified last night when Robert Green
answered an SOS from the manager after David Stockdale withdrew from the
clash with Switzerland – to get married. Fulham goalkeeper Stockdale was
named as one of the understudies to No1 Joe Hart on Monday, but yesterday
informed England that he is due to tie the knot the day before the Euro 2012
qualifier at Wembley on June 4. Stockdale is understood to have been willing
to still link up with Capello's squad after the ceremony. However, the
decision was taken by the England management that it made little sense
asking him to abandon his new wife when he would, in all likelihood, have
been third choice behind Hart and West Brom's Scott Carson and sitting in
the stands. Instead, England's goalkeeping complement will now be brought up
to strength by Green, who has spent the last two months weighing up whether
to continue his England career. West Ham keeper Green has not played for
Capello since his gaffe in England's opening World Cup draw against the USA
last summer and said he did not want to play for his country again after
being overlooked for a run-out in March's friendly against Ghana, a game in
which Capello made wholesale changes.

England talked to Green about his plans at the weekend and the keeper, who
became a father last week, said he would get back to them after speaking to
his family.
But there was still no further contact between the two parties before
Capello named his 23-man squad for the Switzerland game as England decided
Green would benefit from the break after becoming a dad and coping with West
Ham's relegation.

That view was then reversed when Stockdale, who was an unused substitute
against Denmark in February, contacted England and said he was due to be
married.
The episode comes on the back of Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster's decision
to take a sabbatical from international football, citing a succession of
nagging injuries as the reason why he put club before country. In the long
term, Capello will be concerned at the lack of options he has in the event
of Hart getting injured.

Stockdale's first-team opportunities at Fulham have been limited by the form
of Mark Schwarzer and he has not played since the 4-0 FA Cup win over
Tottenham on January 30. Doubts also surround Carson's future at West Brom
after manager Roy Hodgson looked to try to tempt Brad Friedel into a move to
The Hawthorns.
Friedel, 40, is out of contract at Aston Villa and Liverpool are favourites
to head off interest from Tottenham and bring him back to Anfield. But
Capello's goalkeeping crisis could get worse if Hodgson succeeds in
replacing Carson this summer. Foster, who is also a target of Tottenham, is
likely to be too expensive for West Brom, while Green looks set to move to
Aston Villa. Capello still hopes to talk Green out of retiring from
international duty and may promise him at least a half in the August
friendly against Holland.
