Youth Cup draw made
WHUFC.com
West Ham United will host either Manchester United or Portsmouth in the FA Youth Cup fourth round
15.12.2010

West Ham United have been paired with either Manchester United or Portsmouth in the FA Youth Cup fourth round. The Hammers won through to the last 32 with a comprehensive 5-0 third-round win over Aldershot Town at the Boleyn Ground last Tuesday. However, they will not learn the identity of their fourth-round opponents until United and Portsmouth meet on Monday 11 January 2011. Academy Director Tony Carr was happy to secure a home draw, despite the potential quality of the opposition. "It's an exciting prospect of everyone. Obviously, if we play Manchester United, the tie will have a certain ring to it but they have got to get past Portsmouth first. "Whoever we play, we are looking forward to the tie and are obviously pleased that we will be at home. "We shall have the United v Portsmouth tie watched and I shall watch the game myself so we will be fully prepared, whoever we play in the next round."

West Ham have already beaten Portsmouth 2-0 in the FA Premier Academy League this season and host Pompey at Little Heath in the reverse fixture on 22 January. The Hammers have not faced Manchester United at youth level since August 2008, when the pair shared an FA Premier Academy League goalless draw at Little Heath. West Ham have won the FA Youth Cup on three previous occasions, lifting the trophy in 1963, 1981 and 1999. The Hammers, who were the first club drawn out of the hat, reached the fifth round last season, defeating Plymouth Argyle and Queens Park Rangers before being defeated by Newcastle United at the Boleyn Ground.

Dyer delighted with attitude
WHUFC.com
Reserve-team manager Alex Dyer was pleased with his players during Tuesday's friendly draw at Fulham
16.12.2010

Alex Dyer has praised the attitude of his West Ham United reserve team in their 2-2 friendly draw at Fulham. The manager was pleased with the approach shown by first-team squad members Radoslav Kovac, Herita Ilunga, Marek Stech and Zavon Hines, while Anthony Edgar also earned praise on his return after three months out following knee surgery. Olly Lee and George Moncur were both on target as the Hammers came back from a goal down at Motspur Park, only to be denied victory by an 88th-minute equaliser. "I was very pleased. It was a good afternoon's work and the boys worked hard all game. We had a couple of the senior boys playing and, as always when they've been with us, they put in a good performance. "Kovi was good in midfield and got 60 minutes under his belt, Herita also got 60 minutes and Zavon got 45 minutes. It was also nice to see Anthony back playing his first game for three months and he got 45 minutes, so it was a good afternoon's work. "They were two good goals. Olly got us back into the game at 1-1 with a very good free-kick from about 25 or 30 yards. George played a good one-two with young Sebby [Lletget] and bent one into the top corner, so it was good. "We were unlucky not to come away with the victory, but overall it was a very good performance by the lads."

Weather permitting, West Ham's second string round out 2010 by travelling to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a Barclays Premier Reserve League fixture on Monday evening. The Hammers have won three, lost three and drawn one of the seven league matches they have contested so far, chalking up impressive away victories at Everton and Liverpool along the way. With 13 games remaining, there is still plenty for Dyer and his squad to play for. Victory on Monday could lift West Ham into third place before the Christmas and New Year break.

Monday's fixture will kick-off at AFC Telford United's New Bucks Head stadium at 7pm.

Full match reports and reaction from Fulham and Wolves, as well as Dyer's review of the year, will appear in the matchday programmes for the Barclays Premier League visits of Everton and Wolves over the festive season.

Grant handed West Ham ultimatum
BBC.co.uk
By Dan Roan
BBC sports news correspondent

West Ham must win at least one of the relegation-threatened club's next three games or manager Avram Grant will be sacked, BBC Sport understands.
Time is running out for Grant, 55, who has one win in 11 Premier League matches, leaving the club three points adrift at the bottom of the table. It is understood Sam Allardyce, sacked by Blackburn this week, is being considered as a replacement. West Ham play Blackburn away on Saturday and Fulham away on Boxing Day. A source said replacing the Israeli if he fails to meet the terms of the ultimatum would allow the club to make best use of the transfer window, giving the new manager "a chance to make the changes he wanted".

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season West Ham sacked former manager Gianfranco Zola and signed former Portsmouth boss Grant on a four-year contract. Despite sweeping aside Manchester United in the Carling Cup, defeats to Sunderland and Manchester City mean that the club have collected only 12 points from 17 league matches. Grant has faced an injury crisis at Upton Park, deprived of the services of Jack Collison, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Valon Behrami, Kieron Dyer, Carlton Cole and Mark Noble for significant periods of the season. In addition, several of his players are out of contract at the end of the season. The club's owners David Gold and David Sullivan are sympathetic to Grant, but are aware only once in 18 years of the Premier League has a team bottom at Christmas survived the drop. "Dismissing Avram is not something the board wants to do" said the source. "The club are aware that we were lucky to avoid relegation last season, and that Avram inherited a 'Championship-rate' squad. "He's also had a dreadful run of injuries, but we can't get to the beginning of the window and not do something if things don't improve."

Survival specialist Allardyce has an unparalleled track record in digging clubs out of trouble. He took over Rovers when they were 19th in the table and kept them in the Premier League.

Hammers linked with O'Hara swoop
Wednesday 15th December 2010 15:54
TeamTalk

West Ham boss Avram Grant reportedly wants to bring Jamie O'Hara to the club on loan from Tottenham when the transfer window opens next month.
The Hammers boss is keen to take O'Hara on loan for the rest of the season, having been impressed with the midfielder during their time together at beleaguered Portsmouth last season. According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old is close to returning from a back injury that has kept him out all season, but faces a tough task breaking into a Tottenham side who are flying. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has spoken of the need to cut the burgeoning first-team squad, with Robbie Keane, David Bentley and Giovani dos Santos expected to be shown the door next month. O'Hara may still have a long-term future at White Hart Lane, but a six-month loan to regain fitness and form may be mutually beneficial. The former England Under-21 international was voted Pompey's player of the year during their inevitable march towards relegation last season and he played an instrumental role in the south coast club reaching the FA Cup final, in which they were beaten by Chelsea.

London 2012 Olympics: Premier League sanction Tottenham switch to Olympic Stadium
The Premier League will not block Tottenham's potential move to the Olympic Stadium after ruling that neither Spurs nor West Ham would be in breach of the organisation's rules if they move to Stratford.
Telegraph.co.uk
By Paul Kelso, Chief Sports Reporter 7:32PM GMT 15 Dec 2010

Both clubs, competing to take on the stadium after the 2012 Olympics, sought clarification from the Premier League that there would be no barrier to relocation, and were told earlier this month that they would not face any objection. The Premier League's ruling comes with negotiations between the two clubs and the Olympic Park Legacy Company, owners of the stadium, set to extend into the new year. The OPLC had initially set itself a deadline of Dec 31 to select a favoured candidate. That deadline has now slipped however, with the preferred bidder expected to be selected next month. A spokeswoman for the OPLC said they remained on track to sign final contracts with the stadium tenant by the final deadline of the end of March 2011. The Premier League's decision will be welcomed by Tottenham Hotspur, who are pursuing the Stratford bid at the same time as working on their initial Northumberland Park development next door to White Hart Lane.

West Ham had hoped that given the distance Spurs would be moving — 5.3 miles as the crow flies according to the Premier League's measurements — they might be prevented from relocating. With West Ham already based in the same borough, Newham, as the Olympic Stadium they were unlikely to face any opposition from the league. After considering the issue, however, the league board has ruled that it would not object to either club moving. Any club moving ground requires league approval. The Premier League will only allow relocation if a number of criteria are met, including whether the new location is "appropriate" bearing in mind the "relationship between the locality with which by its name or otherwise the club is traditionally associated".

It also considers whether the new location will "adversely affect [Premier League or Football League] clubs in the immediate vicinity of the proposed location". West Ham United believe that were Spurs to get the stadium they would be encroaching on their traditional territory. Meanwhile, Tottenham and England defender Ledley King has been banned from driving for 56 days after being clocked at more than 100 mph in a black Mercedes CL. King, 30, of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, had previously admitted speeding on the A14 near Newmarket, Suffolk, in June, and was sentenced when he appeared before magistrates in Sudbury.

Avram on the brink

Fresh reports are suggesting tonight that Avram Grant could be just three games away from the sack. An unnamed insider at the Boleyn Ground has told the BBC that the under-pressure Israeli - whose team have won just two of their 17 Premier League fixtures this season - was informed today that he has just three games to save his job. "Dismissing Avram is not something the board wants to do," said the source. "The club are aware that we were lucky to avoid relegation last season and that Avram inherited a 'Championship-rate' squad. He's also had a dreadful run of injuries, but we can't get to the beginning of the window and not do something if things don't improve."

Grant's missive is to win at least one of West Ham's next three fixtures - at Blackburn, Fulham and then home to Everton - else face bing fired just six moonths after being unveiled as the successor to Gianfranco Zola, himself fired by David Sullivan and David Gold despite achieving better results than Grant.

A KUMB.com poll revealed last week that three in five supporters wanted to see the back of Grant immediately, with only one in four wanting to give the new manager time to rectify the club's situation.

West Ham eyeing Allardyce - report

The Mirror

Sam Allardyce could make a quick return to the Premier League with West Ham, according to reports. The Hammers are claimed to be giving serious consideration to replacing Avram Grant with the sacked Blackburn manager. The Israeli has been summoned to an Upton Park board meeting, at which he is expected to be told he must take points from the rock-bottom Hammers' next run of games, against Blckburn, Fulham and Everton. "We very much want to stick by him, but it will be make-or-break time over the next few weeks," one senior club insider told the Daily Telegraph. But West Ham may have to move quickly if they want to land Big Sam. Allardyce is believed to be booked on a flight to Dubai today, having lined up TV work, and is thought to be looking for a managerial job in the Middles East after turning down Al-Ahly in the summer.

Obinna: Slow start has Hammered us
Published 23:00 15/12/10 By Neil McLeman
The Mirror

Victor Obinna has admitted West Ham have not recovered from losing their first four league games of the season. The Irons are set to spend Christmas in dreaded last place after winning only two matches out of 17. And in a meeting on Sunday after the Manchester City defeat, the Upton Park board made clear to manager Avram Grant that results had to improve quickly. The Hammers have lost only five of their last 12 matches - the same as Arsenal and only one more than Chelsea. But Grant's side have drawn too many matches, including sharing the points at home to newly-promoted West Brom and Blackpool. Yet loan signing Obinna reckons the damage was done back in the summer when West Ham were caught cold and conceded 12 goals in their first four games. And they have not got out of the bottom three since. "We didn't start very well," said the Nigerian. "Losing the first four games wasn't very good for the team. It has really affected the team. Gradually we have been trying to pick up the rhythm. It has not been easy. "The Premier League is one of the toughest leagues in the world. Obviously it is the fastest in terms of physique. You have to be prepared 100 per cent."

Grant's position at the club is under more strain with the sudden availability of two possible replacements. Stratford-born Chris Hughton played for the Hammers between 1990-92 and his father still lives near the Boleyn Ground, while Sam Allardyce, sacked by Blackburn this week, is a more experienced alternative. West Ham go to Ewood Park on Saturday at the start of a run of four matches against teams in the bottom half of the Premier League which will decide Grant's future. The Hammers also travel to Fulham on Boxing Day before hosting Everton and Wolverhampton.

Grant needs at least two wins from the four games to convince the board to allow him to spend in the January transfer window. The Israeli manager is desperate to keep hold of midfielder Scott Parker but Carlton Cole could be sold to raise further transfer funds. The alternative is the loan market with Tottenham's Jamie O'Hara, who was outstanding at Portsmouth under Grant last season, a possible target now the 24-year-old has recovered from a back injury. Obinna revealed he sought advice from Pompey legend Kanu before moving to Upton Park on a year's loan this season with the option to buy next summer. "I have been having a wonderful time since I have been here," said the winner of November Player of the Month award after his first Premier League goal against Wigan. "Basically, it doesn't depend on me. I come from Inter Milan and Inter Milan has a say in everything concerning me staying in a West Ham shirt."

Turgott stepping up
WHUFC.com
A promising attacker, Blair Turgott is enjoying himself for club and country
this season
14.12.2010

Blair Turgott continues to make good progress with the Under-18s, reserves
and England in what is proving a promising season. The winger was part of
the U18s' fifth-straight success at the weekend as they won 1-0 at Fulham.
It came on the back of having last week helped West Ham United through to
the FA Youth Cup fourth round when he played the whole 90 minutes of a 5-0
win against Aldershot Town at the Boleyn Ground. Turgott's good form has
also seen him make his reserves bow, starting in last month's home match
with Chelsea. Arguably the star performer of the first half before Chelsea
battled back to win 2-1, it was a welcome step up for the youngster. That
said, he is fully focused on proving himself at U18 level for now and in the
FA Youth Cup, with the fourth-round draw made on Wednesday. "It is the big
one," he said of the prestigious competition that in the past notably shot
Joe Cole and Michael Carrick to national attention. "When you think of youth
football, this is the pinnacle. Obviously to win the league is good also but
the Youth Cup is really the one. It is the one that you want to get high in
and announce yourself as a player. "It was a good performance against
Aldershot. We took a while to get into it at first but once we started to
get going our quality showed and we were the better team and we could have
even got more goals but we scored five and I feel happy for that."

With the fourth-round ties to be played by 15 January 2011, attention is
already focused on who might be next up. Turgott, though, said his
team-mates would not be fazed were it to be one of English football's bigger
clubs. "It doesn't really matter. Maybe teams will be fearing us after this
5-0 win. In youth football, it doesn't matter. Everyone is of a similar
level so we will happily take on anyone."

2011 promises to be a big year for Turgott, a like club-mate Matthias
Fanimo, he will hope to figure in England's bid to reach the UEFA European
U17 Championship final. He scored in the 1-0 win against Poland back in
October that sealed qualification for the Elite Round next spring, when the
Young Lions will meet Spain, Northern Ireland and Belgium for a place at the
summer finals in Serbia.

Reserves draw Fulham friendly

Alex Dyer's team got a positive result in a Tuesday practice game behind
closed doors
14.12.2010

Olly Lee and George Moncur were on target as Alex Dyer's reserves secured a
2-2 friendly draw at Fulham on Tuesday. The young midfielders scored within
four second-half minutes as West Ham United's second string fought back from
a goal down to lead at Motspur Park. With Marek Stech on fine form between
the sticks, the Hammers looked odds-on to secure a victory, only for Lauri
Dalla Valle to bundle the ball over the line with two minutes remaining.
Ahead of their final Barclays Premier Reserve League fixture of the year at
Wolverhampton Wanderers next Monday evening, Alex Dyer named a strong side,
with the likes of Herita Ilunga, Radoslav Kovac and Zavon Hines all
included. Winger Anthony Edgar, who enjoyed a superb pre-season, was back in
action following knee surgery. He played the first 45 minutes as planned
ahead of a longer run-out in Monday night's Barclays Premier Reserve League
encounter at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Optimistic Obinna
WHUFC.com
Victor Obinna believes his best form in a West Ham United shirt is yet to
come
13.12.2010

Victor Obinna is hoping team spirit will ensure West Ham United secure their
Barclays Premier League status this season. The Nigeria forward has quickly
endeared himself to his club-mates and supporters alike with a series of
entertaining and enterprising performances - capped by a four-assist effort
in the 4-0 Carling Cup quarter-final victory over Manchester United. The
23-year-old, who received his SBOBET Player of the Month award from Phil
Parkes before the Manchester City match, revealed he has felt right at home
since signing on a year-long loan from Italian champions Internazionale on
27 August.
"It's been pretty wonderful to be honest. The backroom staff and the players
have been fantastic since I've been here and have helped me a lot to adapt
easily, joking in the dressing room and stuff like that. It's been really
wonderful since I've been here."

Obinna revealed that he had sought the advice of Nigeria legend Nwankwo
Kanu, who worked under Hammers manager Avram Grant at Portsmouth, and a
number of his other compatriots, before choosing to move to London. "I spoke
to some of them. I spoke to Nwankwo Kanu because he's a legend to every one
of us and an inspiration to so many young footballers like me. We look up to
him for advice before coming here. Him also knowing the manager very well
convinced me to come to West Ham."

The No33 admitted it took him some time to adapt to the pace of the English
game, but now feels he is up to speed and ready to contribute assists and
goals on a consistent basis. That much was confirmed by him being voted the
top player for November by the club's supporters.
"It's been really unbelievable. Playing against Manchester United was a
massive game for the team and for the club as well and we played some
unbelievably good football and ended up winning well. "We didn't start very
well. Losing the first four games was not good and really affected the team.
Gradually we've been trying to pick up wins but it's not been easy. The
Premier League is the toughest league in the world and obviously the
fastest. In terms of physique, you have to be prepared."

Looking further forward, the Jos-born player knows his future will be
dependent on the form he shows between now and next May. "I've been having a
wonderful time since the beginning and like I said from when I was first
here, football is going to speak for me - not saying I'm going to do this
and do that."

West Ham boss Avram Grant is hoping the club's board will back him with
funds to buy their way out of trouble in the January transfer window. The
Hammers remain rooted to the bottom and four points adrift of safety after
going down 3-1 to title-chasing Manchester City on Saturday. Grant admits it
is vital he brings in new blood in January and he has called on the Hammers
hierarchy to give him up to £10million to spend to freshen up the squad.
"With £10m we can do a lot, we can bring in much better players," said
Grant. "January is not a good time to invest, but we certainly need
additional players, dangerous players. "There are a lot of decisions to make
in January. "Even if everyone is fit we still want to be strong in every
position. If the owners gave me £10m, that would be great. There will be a
decision soon. "The next month or two are very important for us. We cannot
continue playing well but not getting points."

Hitzlsperger sets return date
Hammers midfielder hoping to be back in February
By Chris Burton Last updated: 14th December 2010
SSN

Thomas Hitzlsperger is hoping he will be in a position to make his
long-awaited debut in February. The German midfielder joined West Ham from
Lazio over the summer but has yet to make his competitive bow for the club.
A series of injuries have kept him on the sidelines, with a niggling thigh
problem eventually requiring surgery. The 28-year-old feels he is finally on
the road to recovery, though, and is determined to return to action in the
near future.
He accepts that he is still some way short of the fitness levels required to
compete in the Premier League, but hopes it will not be too long before he
is able to offer his support to the Hammers' survival bid. "It's a tendon
injury and I needed surgery," Hitzlsperger told WHUTV.

Healing

"I spoke to several doctors and they all said the same - I needed surgery
and it would take me four months to get back to playing. "It got done in the
middle of October so I should be back in the middle of February. "There's
not a lot you can do after this kind of surgery. The doctors told me to rest
for the first four weeks as I was on crutches and couldn't really do much. I
started to do conditioning work and to run a week ago. "Now, the healing
process is going well and I'm quite optimistic I'll be able to play in
February. "Things could obviously happen in between but I'm just hoping I
will continue making the same progress over the next two months and I'll be
back in February."

Obinna future rests on form
Nigerian forward enjoying spell at Upton Park
Last updated: 14th December 2010

Victor Obinna is enjoying life at West Ham and has refused to rule out the
possibility of making a permanent move. The Nigeria international joined the
Hammers on a season-long loan over the summer, having found himself on the
fringes of the first-team fold at Italian giants Inter Milan. He has
impressed greatly during his short time in England, with the speed at which
he has settled at Upton Park one of few positives for the club this season.
Their ongoing troubles continue to see them locked in a relegation dogfight,
but Obinna is loving every minute of his time in the Premier League. He
hopes the Hammers can drag themselves clear of trouble over the coming
months and has left the door open for an extension to his current agreement
to be struck, should he be able to maintain his high standards for the
remainder of the campaign.

Wonderful

"I've been having a wonderful time since the beginning and like I said from
when I was first here, football is going to speak for me - not saying I'm
going to do this and do that," Obinna told the club's official website when
pressed on his future. The 23-year-old forward admits his introduction to
the English top flight could have been easier, taking into account West
Ham's struggles, but he feels both he and the club have started to find
their feet of late. "We didn't start very well. Losing the first four games
was not good and really affected the team," he added. "Gradually we've been
trying to pick up wins but it's not been easy. "The Premier League is the
toughest league in the world and obviously the fastest. In terms of
physique, you have to be prepared."

Skysports.com understands West Ham are lining up a move for Blackpool loan
star Luke Varney. Hammers boss Avram Grant is keen to freshen up his squad
in the January transfer window and he is weighing up a move for the forward.
The 28-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at Bloomfield Road from
Derby after being allowed to leave Pride Park. Derby are prepared to sell
Varney to the highest bidder in January and have confirmed Blackpool do not
have a clause in the loan deal which allows the Seasiders exclusive access
to sign the player. The former Crewe and Charlton man has been in stunning
form for Ian Holloway's side since his arrival, scoring five goals for this
season's surprise package. A number of clubs have been alerted to Varney's
services as a result of his impressive performances in the Premier League
and West Ham could now make a move for the attacker in the January transfer
window. The Hammers have struggled for goals this season and the forward
would help add to the side's attacking options as they battle to climb off
the bottom of the table.

Grant - No more excuses
Hammers boss calls for character
Last updated: 13th December 2010
SSN

West Ham manager Avram Grant has called on his players to show their
character and push up the table. The Hammers are now three points adrift at
the bottom of the Premier League following a 3-1 defeat at home to
Manchester City. Grant stressed after the game that his side had been facing
one of the current title contenders and identified upcoming matches against
lesser teams as being more important. But he admits there can be no more
excuses and he has told his men to concentrate on points rather than
performances. "The time has come to stop saying, 'We are playing well,
but...'," said Grant, who vowed to set the right example for his players.
"It is not a time that I like but if I am asking the team to be strong and
show character then I have to be the first one to do that. "I have to lead,
be strong and show character."

Belief

Grant remains confident that West Ham can turn around their poor run of form
and climb out of the relegation zone over the busy festive period. He added:
"I believe in this team and this club. "Of course, this is the time to take
points - we are coming to the middle of the season. "There is time to
recover but we need to change things and get points. I am sure we will do
it. It won't be easy, but we can do it." This weekend's trip to Ewood Park
is followed by crucial clashes with Fulham, Everton and Wolves and Grant
expects the right response from his players.

Impact
"It will not be difficult to lift the players. I am sure what we want to do
is possible," he told the club's official website. "We will take this club
up the table and we have games in the next month that we can make an impact
in. We need to play them and take the points. "I am not thinking about
myself - only that the future of this club will be good. "It is a difficult
time but I am sure we will come out of it. We will fight to do this in every
game."

it."

Saturday's trip to Ewood Park is followed by crucial clashes with Fulham,
Everton and Wolves. And Grant expects his stars to raise their game. He
said: "It will not be difficult to lift the players. "I am sure what we want
to do is possible. We will take this club up the table and we have games in
the next month that we can make an impact in. "We need to play them and take
the points. I am not thinking about myself — only that the future of this
club will be good.
"It is a difficult time but I am sure we will come out of it. We will fight
to do this in every game."

It's looking good for Specs
The Sun

JONATHAN SPECTOR could secure a new contract with West Ham following his
impressive form in recent weeks. Spector, 24, looked to be heading out of
Upton Park after failing to secure a first-team place. But having spent most
of his career in defence, he was handed a surprise recall in central
midfield for the Hammers' Carling Cup quarter-final with Manchester United.
And Spector produced a man-of-the-match show against his former club as
Avram Grant's side pulled off a shock 4-0 win. He has stayed in the side
ever since, despite defeats to Sunderland and Manchester City. The USA
international is is out of contract at the end of the season and free to
talk with other clubs next month, with Cologne leading the chase to sign
him. But West Ham boss Grant is determined to keep most of his squad
together and could reward Spector with a new deal.

Board set to Hammer Grant
The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON
Published: 14 Dec 2010

AVRAM GRANT will be read the riot act by the West Ham board over the club's
dire season. Joint-owners David Gold and David Sullivan are furious with
results under Grant as well as the manager's laid-back attitude. West Ham
are bottom of the Premier League and five points adrift of safety yet Grant
claims his squad is playing well. The Israeli will be hauled in front of
Gold, Sullivan and vice-chairman Karren Brady this week for a severe
grilling over his performance - and his failure to lift the team out of the
doldrums. An Upton Park insider said: "A few bad results can be put down to
the team or bad luck but it's the manager's job to turn things around and
the apparent lack of fighting spirit is what's really getting to the top
brass. "It's as if West Ham are just melting away towards relegation."

The crunch meeting is the first sign of a serious crack appearing in the
relationship between Grant, who is on a four-year deal, and his Upton Park
bosses.

"I have to lead, be strong and show character," says Grant

Avram Grant has told his West Ham players he will not tolerate any more
excuses and that the time to start taking points was now. The Hammers remain
rooted to the foot of the Barclays Premier League and slipped four points
adrift of safety after Saturday's 3-1 home defeat against Manchester City.
Manager Grant was at pains to point out his side were up against one of the
current title contenders but knows they cannot say the same about their
upcoming festive fixtures. All four of West Ham's matches over the Christmas
and New Year period come against sides in the bottom half of the table,
starting with Saturday's trip to Blackburn. "The time has come to stop
saying, 'We are playing well, but...'," said Grant, who vowed to set the
right example for his players. "It is not a time that I like but if I am
asking the team to be strong and show character then I have to be the first
one to do that. "I have to lead, be strong and show character."

The under-pressure Hammers boss added: "I believe in this team and this
club. "Of course, this is the time to take points - we are coming to the
middle of the season. "There is time to recover but we need to change things
and get points. I am sure we will do it. "It won't be easy, but we can do

This weekend's trip to Ewood Park is followed by crucial clashes with
Fulham, Everton and Wolves. Grant told his club's official website

A Big Fat No to Big Fat Sam
West Ham Till I Die

There are very few things that would make me stop going to matches at Upton
Park. The plague and pestilence are two of them. And the appointment of Sam
Allardyce as West Ham manager would be the other.

Strong words maybe, but if Avram Grant is to go, and go I think he must,
then I sincerely hope that Sam Allardyce wouldn't make a shortlist of the
Top 100 possible successors. His style of football is completely anathema to
everything West Ham stand for. I really wouldn't want to watch that week in
week out and I hope I speak for most of the readers of this blog when I say
that.

I can't believe anyone who had West Ham's best interests at heart would
consider appointing Allardyce, but stranger things have happened. Anyway,
maybe I am alone in thinking this so I thought I'd test it out with a one
question poll.

Grant faces showdown board meeting
December 14, 2010
ESPN
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent

West Ham United manager Avram Grant will face a meeting with the board later
this week, at which it is believed he will be told he has two games to turn
around the fortunes of the Premier League's bottom club. Failure in a
decisive double-header against Blackburn and fellow strugglers Fulham, could
see Grant become the third top-flight manager to be sacked before Christmas.
Grant wants £10 million to spend in the January transfer window, and the
Hammers board have to decide whether to hand their existing manager a
transfer kitty or to call in a new boss, with Chris Hughton emerging as
favourite. Sacked Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce has also been linked.
Grant, though, is still the preferred choice as manager of the West Ham
board, despite the availability of Hughton heaping even more pressure on the
man in charge of the relegation-threatened club. However, the West Ham
manager will need at least a point against Blackburn, despite a crippling
injury list, to ensure he can make it to the big game against Fulham and
another under-pressure manager in Mark Hughes.

Reserves 2-2 West Ham
Tuesday 14th December 2010
Fulham.co.uk

The Reserves managed to secure a draw against West Ham United at Motspur
Park on Tuesday afternoon courtesy of a late equaliser from Lauri Dalla
Valle. A defeat would have been harsh on Billy McKinlay's men, who created
the better chances throughout but conceded two goals in four second-half
minutes somewhat against the run of play. Fulham opened the scoring in the
second-half through the lively Kerim Frei only to see West Ham's rapid-fire
brace after the interval turn the tables. But the Whites stuck to their task
well as West Ham pushed for their third of the match and eventually turned
the tide, netting a deserved late equaliser.

Fulham made a positive start to the match with Alex Kacaniklic in particular
looking a danger from the left wing. The first real opportunity of the
encounter came in the 11th minute when Kerim Frei fed a teasing through ball
into the path of Kacaniklic, who had drifted to the right flank. The winger
did well to reach the by-line before playing a square pass across the face
of goal that just evaded the rapidly advancing Dalla Valle. Rafik Halliche,
partnering Aaron Pierre in the centre of defence looked impressive as he
calmly patrolled Fulham's back line.

Marek Stech produced a fine save on 24 minutes, getting down well to his
right hand side to deny Matthew Saunders after he had been played through by
a well weighted Kagisho Dikgacoi through ball. Possession remained even
between the sides but it was Fulham who produced the more promising
situations. The Whites once again went close to taking the lead just after
the half hour mark when a Dalla Valle free kick took a wicked deflection,
leaving Stech looking on as the ball spun wide of the post.

Moments later Frei passed up a fine opportunity to put Fulham in front after
he side footed a pull-back from Kacaniklic wide of the post. However, there
were tense moments at the back for the Whites soon after when only a goal
line clearance denied West Ham the opener. Fulham deservedly took the lead
five minutes into the second-half. A sustained attack saw Stech produce two
point-black saves to deny Kacaniklic and Frei before the ball was worked
back to Frei once more and he drilled a shot inside the far post.

Rafik Halliche and Kagisho Dikgacoi made way for Cheick Toure and Courtney
Harris on 60 minutes. The Hammers netted the equaliser against the run of
play with a well-taken free kick on 67 minutes. Oliver Lee curled a
delightful shot around the Fulham wall and beyond the dive of Marcus
Bettinelli to level the scores. The goal handed West Ham the impetus and
they took the lead minutes later when George Moncur found space in the area
and placed a right footed finish beyond Bettinelli and in off the post.

A fantastic save from Stech on 80 minute denied a certain equaliser for the
Whites after Matt Saunders' swerving free kick seemed destined for the top
corner. But Fulham continued to press and the deserved equaliser came on 88
minutes after a Kacaniklic cross dropped in area for Lauri Dalla Valle to
bundle over the line at the near post.

Fulham: Bettinelli; Marsh-Brown, Smith, Pierre, Halliche (Toure 60);
Dikgacoi (Harris 60), Saunders, Milsom, Kacaniklic; Dalla Valle, Frei

West Ham midfielder Jonathan Spector is set to secure a new contract with
the club following his impressive form in recent weeks. Spector, 24, looked
to be heading out of the exit door at Upton Park following his failure to

he produced a man of the match display with two goals. Spector is out of
contract at the end of the season and is free to talk with other clubs next

Avram Grant told it's 'make or break' at West Ham
By Jason Burt, Deputy Football Correspondent 11:00PM GMT 14 Dec 2010
Telegraph.co.uk

Avram Grant has been summoned to a meeting with the West Ham United board at
which he will be told that the next few games are "make or break" for his
time as manager. Although there is little real appetite among the club's
owners to sack the 55-year-old Israeli, there is a realisation that West Ham
United are in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier
League. Grant will be asked to explain how he hopes to improve results after
West Ham collected just 12 points from 17 league matches. It is understood
he wants to sign three players in the January window but the club are
reluctant to spend heavily if he fails to pick up points in forthcoming
games.

"We very much want to stick by him, but it will be make-or-break time over
the next few weeks," one senior club insider said on Tuesday night. West Ham
face Blackburn away on Saturday, then Fulham away on Boxing Day before their
next home match against Everton on Dec 28. If Grant fails to collect points
from those games he is likely to be removed before West Ham face
Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on New Year's Day. Grant was in a precarious
position before the recent home win over Wigan, which was followed by a
Carling Cup quarter-final victory over Manchester United. But losses against
Sunderland and Manchester City have increased the pressure. According to
sources, Grant remains "supremely confident" that he can turn the team's
fortunes around. But the sudden availability of managers such as Chris
Hughton, ousted by Newcastle, and Sam Allardyce, may sway the West Ham board
into making a change.

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
Strength and character were the manager's watchwords as he reflected on the
weekend
13.12.2010

Avram Grant is heading into a major month for West Ham United having seen
his team come up second best against high-flying Manchester City - although
it was not for the want of effort. When asked his words for the supporters
in the wake of a 3-1 home defeat on Saturday that ended a five-match
unbeaten run at home, the manager called for everyone to stay United. "The
supporters are great and my message to the fans is simple," he said.
"Everything is possible and I am sure we will be OK. We will do everything
we can to achieve our targets and never give up. "I believe in this team and
this club. Of course, this is the time to take points - we are coming to the
middle of the season. There is time to recover but we need to change things
and get points. I am sure we will do it. It won't be easy, but we can do
it."

Grant was aware that results were needed and sooner rather than later - even
if he did not expect to have Jack Collison and Thomas Hitzlsperger to aid
the cause just yet.. "I am not happy about this situation. It is not a time
that I like but if I am asking the team to be strong and show character,
then I have to be the first one to do that. I have to lead, be strong and
show character. "Every week we have to make changes. When you have a settled
team it is easier. But we are a squad and I have faith. We were beaten by a
very good team on Saturday, I cannot tell you anything different to that.
They were stronger and had more quality and physicality."

With a trip to Blackburn Rovers to come on Saturday, the manager was certain
his team would be ready to go again come kick-off. "It will not be difficult
to lift the players. I am sure what we want to do is possible. We will take
this club up the table and we have games in the next month that we can make
an impact. We need to play them and take the points. "I am not thinking
about myself - only that the future of this club will be good. It is a
difficult time but I am sure we will come out of it. We will fight to do
this in every game. The time has come to stop saying 'we are playing well,
but...'"

Stanislas states intent
WHUFC.com
Junior Stanislas knows West Ham United's next five Barclays Premier League
fixtures could be pivotal
13.12.2010

Junior Stanislas believes West Ham United's next five Barclays Premier
League fixtures could decide the destiny of the club's season. The Hammers
travel to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday and Fulham on Boxing Day before
welcoming Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Boleyn Ground on 28
December and New Year's Day respectively and heading for Newcastle United on
5 January. With four of those matches against teams in the bottom half of
the table on the agenda, the winger is targeting the victories that have
proved so elusive so far this term. "I think they games we can pick up
points from," Stanislas told WHUTV. "We're not going to play Manchester City
every week, so we've got a good chance against Blackburn. We'll be fully
focused on that and will hopefully get something."

While the No25 is naturally looking forward to future challenges, he also
believes West Ham could have done better against big-spending Manchester
City at the weekend. The Hammers went down to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of
Roberto Mancini's expensively-assembled side, but Stanislas insisted there
was no reason why he and his team-mates could not have secured at least a
draw. With the game still goalless, the England Under-21 player cut inside
Jerome Boateng before working Joe Hart with a low drive. The 23rd-minute
chance turned out to be West Ham's best of the match. "They are a good team
but when you play against any team, you can get something off them if you
play well. Even if they play well, you can nick something but things didn't
really go our way. "We conceded a goal that, personally, I think we could
have stopped. I don't think we did too badly. We just got caught on the
break one or two times. "Obviously everyone is disappointed to lose because,
even though they are a good team, we thought we could get something out of
them."

For Stanislas himself, the disappointment of defeat was tempered by the joy
of making just his fifth first-team appearance of the season - two of which
have come in the Carling Cup. Having featured in three of the club's last
four matches in all competitions, the 21-year-old is keen to be involved
again at Ewood Park. "For me personally, just playing is the main thing.
I've played and I know I can always do better, so I'll be working hard in
the week so I play next week."

Grant on... Manchester City

Despite yet another home defeat, Avram Grant maintains that West Ham's
fortunes will change soon...

Avram: do you think 3-1 was a little bit harsh?

It was a little bit harsh, especially in the second half. But they are a
good team with good players, also very strong physically. We tried -
especially in the second half we started very well - [and up] until 75
minutes we were on top of them then they scored from a counter attack which
was very difficult again. They have a lot of quality in this team.

It looked like you had a shout for a penalty before their second goal - a
handball in the penalty area?

Yes, I saw it [just] now, it was a penalty but the referee didn't see it. It
could change the game but we don't want to complain about this.

Just about the only time West Ham have been off the bottom this season was
when they didn't play last week. What's going to change?

You know, Manchester City are a better team than us - especially when we're
missing seven or eight players that normally play. Today they were players
that weren't even on the bench. But the boys tried and [soon] we are playing
against teams that we have played before - teams that we were better than
but didn't take points. What's important for us is the next month.

Do you think Manchester City are potential title winners?

They can take the championship, for sure. They have quality players that can
score for you. In the second half [today] they were not even in the game and
then [clicks fingers], from one moment they score. The first half was the
same, they didn't create many chances and then a fantastic goal from a great
player. But they have good technique and that's what won the game today,
quality. They're also very physical and very difficult to compete with both
physically and [in terms of] quality so I'm sure they can go all the way.

Do you accept that defensively the first two goals were very poor?

I think every game we've conceded it's looked like we're poor defensively.
[For the first goal] the ball was with us, we gave the ball away cheaply
like we did many times in the first half and they passed the ball very well.
We lost Yaya Toure by half a centimetre and they scored. The second goal was
when we were on top of them; the ball again was at our feet, we lost it and
they made a very good counter attack.

Are you concerned at your position now? Becasue the teams above you are
picking up points.

A month ago they were five or six points above us... I think that when we
are not even in the middle of the season - it's not a good situation, we
don't like it - but we can turn it [around], there is time to turn it. I
know that we are saying it all the time but still we can do it, that's
what's important. Against Manchester City it was difficult for us.

Have you got any idea how many points you might need to stay up? Because at
the moment you're not even going to get 27 points if you carry on picking
points up at the same rate.

I don't know how many points. I know that if we win two from the next three
games - which we can do even though it's not easy - it'll be a better
position, that's what's important.

But you've only won two our 17, so most people wouldn't expect you to win
two out of three.

Look, I don't know what people expect but I know what we expect from
ourselves. We'll analyse our quality - not the game against City who are a
stronger side than us - but even today we could do something with this. All
the teams we have played against from eight place down, you have seen the
games - they were not better than us. But we didn't pick up points so it's
real that we can do it and pick up points. That's what we need to see, not
calculate so many things.

Okay. So do you see January as an opportunity to really change things in
terms of the shape of the squad?

I think yes. The squad also depends on the number of injuries, you know.
Today I think eight players didn't play because they were injured so we need
to see if they can play. We need to be stronger but not so much; if they
cannot play and the injuries continue we'll need to think about it and
January is an opportunity for us to be[come] stronger.

How many players would you like to bring in?

It toally depends on the players. Today, I think, was Lars Jacobsen; Danny
Gabbidon; Kieron Dyer, who could play only 30 minutes; Behrami could not
play; Hitzlsperger; Mark Noble and others. It depends how long-term their
injuries are - if we see the injuries again and again we need to think about
more players. For the moment we are thinking about two or three positions
that can help us.

Have you spoken to the owners after the game and have you spoken to them
about January?

Yes I've been speaking with them. WIth their limited resources they are
trying to do their best for the team.

Have you spoken to them today?

No. I need to speak with you first...

When you hear the crowd booing or when it's quiet it's not a typical Upton
Park. Does it concern you that your employers might not actually maintain
their nerve and hold patience until you do manage to turn things around?

Even the supporters know that to play without so many players adds pressure,
but the players that they played against were such a strong side. We wanted
to produce a good result, we tried to get a good result but it would have
been a bonus - even if we like bonuses. The next game is more important and
I think in the last month, two months, even before, we did progress even if
we didn't take more points. It's not what I want but what's important is if
we can do it in the future and not speak too much about the past, no?

So you think January is going to be a key month for you?

First we have games now, this month - so we want to win those and then think
about January. But I think because of our position - and even though we have
many games [to go] until the end of the season, remember than we are not
even at the halfway point of the season - we can turn things around. We need
to play like we've been playing but also pick up points.

Kidd on... West Ham United
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 12th December 2010
By: Staff Writer

Manchester City assistant manager Brian Kidd stands in for the preoccupied
Roberto Mancini to reflect on a job well done...

A good win, Brian?

Yes, everybody's happy with it. It was a good performance because we knew it
was going to be tough playing the Hammers, but I think we ran out
comfortable winners.

Do you now think all the elements are coming together?

Well I think the work the manager's put in on the training pitch is
absolutely fantastic, it's a pleasure to see him work. Monday to Friday, his
work ethic is fantastic and his passion and desire is first class. We all
know that it doesn't come overnight but the work he's put in this season and
towards the end of last season is beginning to show now, in the performances
of the players. I think the club are very lucky to have him as a manager
because he's certainly a winner, no doubt about it.

Can he win the title?

Well, you know the way we've been brought up - you don't win anything in
December. Hopefully if we're still in the shake up come March/April we can
start thinking in those terms but at the oment there's a lot of hard work to
go in. People have said that the fixtures we've got coming up... like
everything, you've got to make sure you win your games.

That's not just being flippant, it's a long haul, the Premier League. When
you've been involved in it, you've seen it happen so many times in the past
where teams have flattered to deceive. Hopefully we're in contention come
March/April then we can start thinking about it.

[Question regarding squad rotation]

When you look at certainly David Silva, Mario [Balotelli], the role of Yaya
[Toure] as well - and Jo has come in and put a great shift in as well like
he did against Fulham, so the rotation was good. But he {Mancini] is not
happy because we've lost a goal at the end! That's the only thing, that's
the boss because obviously we want to keep clean sheets and the defenders
love that as well.

Why is Roberto not here tonight?

He's had to go back to Italy, to see his dad.

Is there a reason for Balotelli's substitution? Because he didn't look
happy.

No, it's purely tactical. Again, the reason the boss thought he was looking
for a little bit more drive down the sides of them and then Adam [Johnson]
came on and scored a great goal. Then James [Milner] came on... but it had
nothing to do with that whatsoever, it was purely tactical because we wanted
a little bit more drive.

They were coming into the game and the Hammers' crowd were behind them - and
they're a passionate crowd here, so they were putting a little bit of
pressure on us. When we got the extra couple of goals, that's what we were
looking for because by no stretch of the imagination did we think 1-0 was
going to be enough.

But was it felt that he reacted a little bit on the stroppy side?

Well he's a young player and he's come into the Premier League from Serie A,
but he's a great kid. He works so hard in training as well. You lads know,
you know you're going to be under the microscope in the Premier League. But
he's learning, he's got a lot of support, assistance and help which he'll
grow into. There's no doubt about that, because the boy is certainly a
talent, a fantastic player.

Did you hear the West Ham fans signing 'what a waste of money'?

Well we're certainly happy with what we've got, I can assure you of that.
The boy is a talent, make no mistake about that. But again, you look where
Yaya's come from - that midfield at Barcelona is credited as first class but
again, it does take time in the Premier League. Sometimes it may take
foreign players six months or it may take them a season.

You lads know better than me, you've heard it so many times - 'oh he's not a
Premier League player' - people make early judgments and you shouldn't do
that in the Premier League. Not so many years ago Sir Alec [Ferguson] bought
Evra and Vidic and people at Old Trafford were saying 'oh, they're not Man
United players' - and look what they've turned out to be. Nasri now at
Arsenal is finding his feet. Again with David Silva - what a technician that
lad is.

[Question regarding Mancini's title credentials]

It's fantastic to see him work. His passion, his commitment, his desire and
his will to win is unbelievable. His preparation is fantastic and to watch
him work on the training pitch, it's an education.

Is he a better manager than Alex [Ferguson]?

Flipping heck! No, we were laughing with the boss because we were saying
about his birthday and I was saying 'just think, you've got another 24 years
to go'! To be continued! No, but it's great to see what Sir Alec's done for
Manchester United but I'm pleased now for the boss. What he's put in and now
hopefully, bit by bit, it's bearing fruit and we're seeing it now when we
play, when we get the results.

In the Premier League you've got to be able to play well, you've got to win
ugly, you've got to have a massive bit of luck to be in contention for the
Premier League. There's no doubt about it. You've got to fight... it takes
all sorts to win games in the Premier League.

Was Roberto's absence tonight not planned?

No, no. His dad wasn't well in the summer and he's just managed to get a
break to go home. So he's flying straight out now and getting a day back
home with his family. He'll be back on Tuesday.

Despite what you say there has been some resistance to Roberto's methods. Do
you think everyone gets it now?

There hasn't been any resistance, that's the thing. Remember, the boss has
come over here from Serie A and he's been successful, that's why I think it
was a little bit disrespectful - you know, he's been over there and he's won
things. Then he's come over and it's been like a duck to water. There's been
no resistance. It like what the boss wants, he gets his points over and
that's it. Like we've said about Sir Alec, that's it - you do it.

Pardew plans Barton stay
Magpies boss also considers Ben Arfa deal
Last updated: 12th December 2010
SSN

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew insists he has no plans to sell West Ham
United target Joey Barton. As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week ,
West Ham have targeted a move for midfield dynamo Barton when the transfer
window reopens next month. Newcastle are thought to have rejected West Ham's
opening gambit, but the Hammers are believed to be ready to come back with
an improved offer for the former Manchester Cityman. Pardew has been
impressed by Barton this season and he revealed he plans to hold talks with
the midfielder over his future. "He is a big part of my plans," Pardew said
of Barton. "I am going to speak to Joey because there is no doubt this
season has been a real turnaround for him. "He still has that hot streak he
showed the other day, but his performances have been excellent. He has been
one of the top three players of the season."

Pardew also revealed he plans talks with the club over a permanent deal for
on-loan Marseille winger Hatem Ben Arfa. Ben Arfa is currently injured after
breaking his leg against Manchester City in October, but the Frenchman
impressed during his first few outings and Pardew is ready to sign the
winger on a permanent basis. "He's in my thinking - strongly," Pardew said
of Ben Arfa. "I am going to speak to Derek (Llambias) about that and see if
we can resolve it some way."

Meanwhile, Pardew has admitted he has spoken with chief scout Graham Carr
about possible transfer targets. "I've had a brief meeting about potential
targets and positions with Graham Carr," continued Pardew. "I still need to
assess the group here. It would be unfair not to. But the window is an
opportunity and you have to keep an eye on it. "Hopefully it will be good
news."

Stanislas wants Hammers spark
Winger says Hammers need something to get going

West Ham winger Junior Stanislas claims the club must start showing some
belief if they want to avoid relegation from the Premier League. The Hammers
are currently sitting rock bottom of the division following Saturday's 3-1
defeat against Manchester City at Upton Park. However, Avram Grant's side
are only four points from safety going into a busy Christmas schedule. West
Ham head to Blackburn next weekend, before another away trip at fellow
strugglers Fulham, then home games against Evertonand Wolves, on New Year's
Day.

Confidence

Stanislas, fit again following a groin problem, said: "The next four or five
games are definitely ones we can get points form, so hopefully we will start
picking them up. "Even difficult fixtures we look forward to and think we
can get something, even if it is a draw, or play well and get confidence.
"However, these next runs of matches, we can definitely get points from."
The 21-year-old insisted: "The belief is still there, we just need a little
something, a little spark to get us going again. "The belief has to be
there, when you start losing your belief, you start losing your way, the
little ricochets and decisions which go against you are part of football,
you can only do what you do and try to affect the game that way."

Grant not thinking of axe
West Ham manager concentrating on team
Last updated: 12th December 2010

Avram Grant has insisted his focus is on turning around West Ham's flagging
fortunes rather than his own future. The manager continues to have the
backing of the Upton Park board but the pressure is steadily mounting after
Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City. The result left West Ham bottom of
the table and four points adrift of safety, leading to more questions about
Grant's job security. The Israeli, who replaced Gianfranco Zola over the
summer, insists such matters are not important as he is only concerned about
the team.

Improve

Grant knows the Hammers are struggling but feels the outlook could be
brighter by the turn of the year, with a series of upcoming games against
other teams in the bottom half of the table. "I am not thinking about my
position - I am thinking only that I need to do my job," he said. "Our
position is not so good and I don't need to think if my job is like this or
like that. "My job is to improve the team and take points, especially in the
next games."

West Ham travel to Blackburn next Saturday before facing Fulham, Everton and
Wolves over the Christmas period.

Grant's got trouble and strife

AVRAM GRANT faces his own problems with an unsettled star - his missus.
Israeli TV presenter wife Tzofit brought forward her flight home to Tel Aviv
to Saturday night once West Ham were condemned to yet another defeat. Glum
Hammers boss Grant sighed: "Whenever I lose she says I am miserable.
"It's true. I can't eat or sleep I'm so down. "My wife was planning to go
back on Sunday but after the final whistle she immediately booked a Saturday
night flight." Grant's luck is out right now but he reckons £10million in
the transfer window would buy West Ham out of trouble. Grant added: "January
is not a good time to invest but we need some dangerous players."

Hammers boss hanging on - but his wife's done one!

Avram Grant's wife has drunk her own urine for breakfast and bathed in
chocolate. But the bold Tzofit cannot handle the West Ham manager after
another defeat. So instead of spending the rest of the weekend in London,
the Israeli actress and TV star changed her flight and flew home Saturday
night with the Hammers still rock bottom of the table. "It's crazy," said
Grant. "Whenever I lose she says I am so miserable. It's true. I cannot
sleep or eat. I feel so down whenever we lose. "My wife works in Israeli TV
and she was planning to go back on Sunday but after the final whistle she
immediately booked a flight back on Saturday night."

More important now is how long Grant will stay. After only two wins in 17,
the newly available Chris Hughton was linked with his job yesterday. The
former Newcastle manager is a Hammers fan and his father still lives near
the Boleyn Ground. But Grant was more focused on the work he will do in the
January transfer market with "two or three" players on his wish list. "With
£10m we can do a lot, we can bring in much better players," he said.
"January is not a good time to invest but we certainly need additional
players, dangerous players, but we have players injured who we don't know if
we need cover for or not - there a lot of decisions to make in January. But
even if everyone is fit we still want to be strong in every position. If the
owners gave me £10m that would be great. "We are discussing this at the
moment and will eventually have a decision. We need to also remember that
the club is in big debt."

West Ham's next four games are against teams in the bottom half of the
table. Junior Stanislas said: "It is a disappointing result, but the next
four or five games are definitely ones we can get points form, so hopefully
we will start picking them up. These next runs of matches, we can definitely
get points from. "The belief is still there, we just need a little
something, a little spark to get us gibing again. "The belief has to be
there, when you start losing your belief, you start losing your way, the
little ricochets and decisions which go against you are part of football,
you can only do what you do and try to affect the game that way."

Hughton 'set to replace Avram at Hammers'
Published 12:33 12/12/10 By MirrorFootball
The Mirror

Chris Hughton could be set for an instant return to Premier League
management as Avram Grant's successor at West Ham. The Israeli is thought to
be close to the sack after Saturday's home defeat to Manchester City left
the Hammers rock-bottom of the table. West Ham co-owners David Gold and
David Sullivan are also interested in Hughton's former boss at Spurs, Martin
Jol. And if the Dutchman got the Upton Park job instead, Hughton would be
considered as a replacement for Roy Keane at Ipswich.

Vinny's Manchester City Report
Vinny - Sun Dec 12 2010
West Ham Online
West Ham United 1 Manchester City 3

West Ham were again beaten and remain bottom of the league after being
unable to compete with a quality Manchester City side who just had too much
for the Hammers to handle.

Whilst we competed for large parts of the game the difference between both
sides was simply quality. They took their chances when they presented
themselves and we struggled to hit the target most of the time.

They were comfortable in possession of the ball and we looked as though we
didn't really have much of a game plan. Players such as Barrera and
Stanislas though no doubting their effort looked way out of their depth when
up against the world class players this Manchester City team includes.

But regardless of how many good players the opposition team is we have to be
winning games. We have had our chances to win games against teams of similar
quality such as West Brom and Blackpool which saw us fail in this task. So
when you have another home game against anyone the pressure is on to get a
result given past failings.

I went into this game very pessimistic about our chances and could not see
how we were going to hurt them. The game went pretty much as expected and
leaves the fans frustrated with manager Avram Grant and West Ham still at
the foot of the table now four points adrift.

Avram Grant made changes to the side who were beaten at Sunderland last
weekend. In defence Danny Gabbidon was missing and replaced by Julien
Faubert. This saw Ben Haim revert to left back with Faubert on the right.

In midfield Kieron Dyer was dropped to the bench and replaced by Junior
Stanislas who started on the left with Pablo Barrera starting on the right
with Luis Boa Morte dropping to the bench.

Up front saw the return of Frederique Piquionne alongside Victor Obinna with
Carlton Cole dropping to the bench.

It was all Manchester City in the opening stages and they should have taken
the lead after only four minutes when Jo crossed from the left for Balotelli
to glace his shot wide in what was an early let off.

From the early moments of the game the visitors looked to have one player
who would dominate the game and that was YaYa Toure who really is a giant.
As Ben Haim moved forward Toure burst forward only to be taken down by Scott
Parker which the West Ham midfielder was lucky to get away without a booking
which would have seen him suspended.

Our main play seemed to be to get it wide to Barrera or Stanislas and when
the former burst forward and cut inside he was brought down just outside the
area.

Stepping up to take the set piece was Junior Stanislas but his effort when
high over the bar in a really disappointing attempt.

Our best move of the half game around half way through and of course Scott
Parker was involved in creating it as he played a superb pass out to the
left for Stanislas who was in space and he did what he doesn't do enough and
run at the defender, cut inside and hit a powerful shot which was well saved
by Joe Hart.

YaYa Toure received the ball almost in his own half and powered forward with
no one able to stop him but as he got into the area his shot was weak when
he should have scored a quite brilliant goal.

But he wouldn't have to wait long to make amends as on the half hour mark he
would score an with an unstoppable shot. The move started when Piquionne
needlessly gave the ball away (if this was Cole this would have been picked
up on) and the visitors burst forward with Barry crossing for Toure to react
quicker than Spector and thump his effort past Green.

It was a horrible ten minutes after that point as they looked rampant and we
were chasing shadows.

Balotelli was unlucky not to have scored when he won a header from a corner
but his header was cleared off the line by Barrera.

The only chance we created was a long range effort from Parker which went
well wide in what was another disappointing half. I couldn't see how we were
going to get back into the game without a superhuman effort from a group of
players who looked inferior all over the pitch compared to the opposition.

The second half started with Ben Haim going straight through the back of
Silva and finding himself booked for this poor challenge.

Our first move of any note came from the quiet Obinna who got down the left
well and crossed for Piquionne but he could not get to the ball before Joe
Hart.

Just before the hour mark YaYa Toure was released and through with Faubert
and Tomkins chasing him with the latter making a last ditch tackle which
actually ended up going out for a goal kick.

Stanislas was replaced by Dyer who immediately had a chance when Parker
played a superb pass through the middle but Dyer was beaten to the ball by
the defender.

A penalty appeal was turned down by the referee when a corner was swung in
to the area and the ball appeared to hit the hand of YaYa Toure which
replays confirm.

Carlton Cole came on for the ineffective Barrera with Obinna switching to
the wing with Piquionne playing alongside Cole.

Just two minutes after this change the game was over when Manchester City
scored their second.

It came when Spector was easily dispossessed in the centre of the midfield
and the visitors broke forward with the ball being fed to YaYa Toure who
took on Tomkins with ease and his hit shot which bounced off the post, hit
Robert Green on the back and went into the back of the net.

It was unlucky for Green and the culprits were Spector for losing the ball
so poorly and Tomkins for being beaten so very easily.

The fans in 'Chav Corner' were certainly turning on Avram Grant by this
point with many voicing their negative opinion on the managers failings.

Chants of Paolo Di Canio were being voiced with some fans wanting the former
striker installed as manager. Let me think now, good striker, exciting
players, Italian, no managerial experience… hmm.

With under ten minutes remaining Manchester City added further gloss to the
scoreline as Silva played the ball through for Adam Johnson who had made a
great run in behind the defence and the winger rounded Robert Green and
scored.

By this point Piquionne had been taken off in favour of Zavon Hines.

With injury time approaching there was time for one last bit of action when
a corner from Victor Obinna was met by James Tomkins whose header deflected
of Kolo Toure and into the back of the net for what would only be a
consolation goal.

Whilst Manchester City are a better team than us when you are struggling to
get results against teams you would consider on our level then games like
this see us having to get something out of. Whilst Avram Grant can comment
on Manchester City not being the type of side we need to compete with if you
are not going to beat teams of equal or lesser quality just who are we going
to beat?

Player Reviews

Robert Green
Unlucky to have the second goal go down as an own goal as there was little
he could do about the ball hitting him on the back. Made some standard saves
throughout and he had some interesting banter with the crowd behind him in
the second half.

Julien Faubert
Puts in plenty of effort and does a lot of running but has very little
quality. His distribution was dismal and when I think about it he is a
player who was signed as an attacking right winger who has reverted to a
poor right back. If we could get anything over a couple of quid for him in
January then it really is time to call it day with Faubert.

James Tomkins
A decent performance from Tomkins although exposed at times when up against
the excellent YaYa Toure. Scored a goal in the second half which seemed to
give him the SBOBET Man Of The Match award. Until we sign a top class centre
half Tomkins is as good as anything we have got.

Matthew Upson
I'd love to see him shouting and giving the team a bit of a bollocking when
they switch off but as it keeps being pointed out he is just not that type
of captain and we really need someone like that to try and get some of our
players going. Upson is usually good in the air but Manchester City played a
lot of their football on the floor which didn't suit our 'Captain'.

Tal Ben Haim
Awful when on the ball, awful when off it. Gave the ball away too many times
and all I've seen from this fella is constant shit.

Pablo Barrera
Continues to show us that he is out of his depth in the Premiership.

Jonathan Spector
Its seems that Johnny Messi Maradona Spector was only available for one
night only. This was a performance where the all the old Spector negatives
game out. Held on to the ball for too long, couldn't get forward and was
easily stifled by the Manchester City midfield.

Scott Parker
Our only player who tried to bring the play forward. His passing was
inconsistent which hindered his performance and he gave the ball away a lot.
But most of our decent play coming forward had him involved somewhere.

Junior Stanislas
Like Barrera he just looked a bit lost and not of the quality to compete
against the likes of Manchester City.

Victor Obinna
Very quiet and was not involved in the game enough to make any impact.
Whilst I like Obinna and think he has a lot of ability he doesn't do it
enough.

Frederique Piquionne
Won a few headers but was generally poor. Never looked like scoring, lost
the ball to many times, his touch was heavy and this wasn't a good display.

Subs Used

Kieron Dyer (on for Stanislas 65 mins)
Ran about a lot and looked speedy as always but did very little on the ball.
If he is fit surely he should be starting?

Carlton Cole (on for Barrera 71 mins)
Like most of his season, made no impact whatsoever.

Zavon Hines (on for Piquionne 80 mins)
Not much of an impact apart from being fouled a few times. I think it might
be time for him to start.

Subs Not Used: Stech, Boa Morte, Kovac, Reid

Bookings: Ben Haim

Man Of The Match: Er...

Manchester City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Kolo Toure, Boateng, Yaya Toure,
De Jong, Barry, Silva (Milner 86), Balotelli (A.Johnson 61), Jo
Subs: Given, Richards, Lescott, Vieira, Santa Cruz

Attendance: 32, 813

Overall

We might have been beaten by a better team but at the end of the day we were
still beaten and I don't understand how Avram Grant expects us to stay up if
we do not win any games. I'm no football manager but surely to pick up
points you need to start winning?

Everything seems pretty dismal at the moment as I cannot see where the next
victory is coming from. I want to be positive and think that the turning
point is around the corner but I believe I have been saying that for over a
year.

Next Game - Blackburn (a)

They are excellent at Ewood Park and we are going to have to really perform
to get anything out of the game. I would usually take an away point but the
fact is we need all three and badly because no one wants to go into
Christmas bottom of the league and this time next week we could be seven
points adrift.

What we saw during this game is the lack of quality we possess and that is
something that needs to be addressed in January and should have been
addressed in the summer.

A change is needed somewhere and surely time for Avram Grant must be running
out.

The View From Grant

"Three-one was a little bit hard on us, Especially with the way we came back
in the second half but they are a good team with good players. They are very
strong physically and have a lot of quality.

"We did not pass the ball well in the first half and gave the ball away
cheaply but we were better in the second half. We started well after
half-time and were on top but they scored again on a counterattack and it
was very difficult to come back."

"Manchester City are a better team than us, especially when we are playing
without seven or eight first-team players. They have players that didn't
even make the bench, like Shaun Wright-Phillips and Wayne Bridge.

"But the boys are trying and they will not give up the fight. They didn't
give up against a team that can take the championship for sure. They have a
big balance between quality players and physical players. They were not in
the game but they were able to score in a moment. That was the difference."

"We expect better from ourselves and even today we could have done
something. We know what we need to do and we will make it happen. It won't
be easy but we will get to a better position."

Grant acknowledges City quality
WHUFC.com
The manager said his team came up against a side on Saturday that could take
the title
11.12.2010

Avram Grant admitted on Saturday evening that his team were second best to a
team that could well be champions come the conclusion of the Barclays
Premier League in May. Manchester City were worthy 3-1 winners at the Boleyn
Ground but the manager was equally certain that his team would make up the
four-point gap to safety - and more - over the coming weeks. UEFA Champions
League winner Yaya Toure was the City hero, scoring the first and making the
second, before England winger Adam Johnson sealed the win with a late third.
James Tomkins added a consolation but the three points that took City
joint-top were never in doubt. "Three-one was a little bit hard on us," said
the manager, who had to reshuffle his pack again with the injured Danny
Gabbidon dropping out of his ever-changing back four and Julien Faubert
coming in. "Especially with the way we came back in the second half but they
are a good team with good players. They are very strong physically and have
a lot of quality. "We did not pass the ball well in the first half and gave
the ball away cheaply but we were better in the second half. We started well
after half-time and were on top but they scored again on a counterattack and
it was very difficult to come back."

Grant refused to complain about what seemed a certain penalty denied for the
Hammers after Yaya Toure's apparent handball but was prompted to respond by
the media. "I saw it now. It was a penalty but the referee didn't see it.
It could have changed the game but we won't complain about this."
Moments later, City had doubled the advantage. Yaya Toure burst clear off
the otherwise exemplary James Tomkins - who had frustrated the substituted
Mario Balotelli all afternoon - to shoot against the post and see the ball
cannon in off the back of Robert Green. The move had stemmed from a loss of
possession in midfield and Grant said such mistakes would always be punished
by such opposition. "Manchester City are a better team than us, especially
when we are playing without seven or eight first-team players. They have
players that didn't even make the bench, like Shaun Wright-Phillips and
Wayne Bridge. "But the boys are trying and they will not give up the fight.
They didn't give up against a team that can take the championship for sure.
They have a big balance between quality players and physical players. They
were not in the game but they were able to score in a moment. That was the
difference."
While the league table does not make for good reading, Grant was defiant and
determined. "We expect better from ourselves and even today we could have
done something. We know what we need to do and we will make it happen. It
won't be easy but we will get to a better position."

Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger returned to Chadwell Heath on Friday
10.12.2010

There was a welcome sight at Chadwell Heath on Friday in the shape of
Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger. The 28-year-old has been denied the
opportunity to make his competitive West Ham United debut after suffering a
thigh injury in August. Hitzlsperger underwent surgery in Germany in October
and had been recuperating in his homeland before returning to the Hammers'
training ground this week. Capped 52 times by his country, the former VfB
Stuttgart star is determined to get back into action and aid the club's bid
to climb the Barclays Premier League table. "It's a tendon injury and I
needed surgery," Hitzlsperger told WHUTV. "I spoke to several doctors and
they all said the same - I needed surgery and it would take me four months
to get back to playing. It got done in the middle of October so I should be
back in the middle of February. "There's not a lot you can do after this
kind of surgery. The doctors told me to rest for the first four weeks as I
was on crutches and couldn't really do much. I started to do conditioning
work and to run a week ago. "Now, the healing process is going well and I'm
quite optimistic I'll be able to play in February. Things could obviously
happen in between but I'm just hoping I will continue making the same
progress over the next two months and I'll be back in February."

West Ham 1 - 3 Man City
BBC.co.uk
By David Ornstein

Manchester City served notice of their title ambitions by outclassing West
Ham to move level on points with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
City took a deserved lead when the superb Yaya Toure fired past Robert Green
from Gareth Barry's cut-back. And they made it two at a subdued Upton Park
as Yaya Toure's shot hit a post and went in off Green's back. Adam Johnson
rounded Green to seal the points before James Tomkins headed a consolation
for rock-bottom West Ham. The result sees big-spending City leapfrog Chelsea
and Manchester United to join Arsenal on 32 points, although the Gunners'
goal difference is superior by five. Chelsea will go top if they win at
Tottenham on Sunday, while Arsenal and United have the chance to take pole
position when they meet at Old Trafford on Monday. West Ham, by contrast,
stay bottom of the league on 12 points with only two wins all season.

Their loss at Sunderland last Sunday kept them at the foot of the table, but
a run of five home games without defeat in all competitions provided cause
for optimism ahead of this one. And despite featuring four changes from the
side beaten on Wearside, the Hammers looked lively and cohesive from the
outset - snapping into tackles and breaking forward at pace. Boss Avram
Grant dropped Carlton Cole to the bench as Frederic Piquionne came in to
partner Victor Obinna up front, and the Frenchman was ably supported by
wingers Pablo Barrera and Junior Stanislas. Yet it was City, unbeaten in the
league since October and with five victories from nine away games, who
carved out the best chance in the early stages. With captain Carlos Tevez
ruled out of a return to his old club through suspension, City fans could
have been forgiven for approaching the match with trepidation. The Argentine
striker had scored 48% of his side's league goals this season - a higher
proportion than at any other club. But it was his replacement, the Brazilian
forward Jo, who produced a fine run and low cross from the left to tee up
Mario Balotelli in the fourth minute.

The in-form Italian ghosted in front of Matthew Upson at the near post, only
to angle his first-time finish wide of the far upright. Seemingly unfazed by
that close shave, West Ham went back on the front foot and Scott Parker
volleyed wide before Stanislas curled a free-kick over and shot powerfully
at Joe Hart after cutting in from the left. However, City gradually began to
exert an influence on proceedings - dominating possession and frustrating
their opponents with a slick brand of pass-and-move football - and reward
was forthcoming. West Ham were warned of the threat posed by Yaya Toure when
he ran half the length of the pitch before shooting straight at Green - but
the lesson was not heeded. In the 30th minute, the Ivorian fed Gareth Barry
on the left, got ahead of a dozing Jonathan Spector to meet the cut-back and
rifle a first-time drive past Green from the edge of the penalty area. It
was a stunning finish and one which West Ham worked hard to bounce back
from, Parker dragging a drive narrowly wide and Piquionne glancing a header
over from Julien Faubert's cross. City reached half-time fairly comfortably
and the flat atmosphere at Upton Park did not exactly make for a rousing
opening to the second period.

Obinna drilled in a promising centre from the left that was gathered by Hart
with Piquionne lurking, but a second City goal was looking more likely than
a West Ham equaliser. Yaya Toure stung Green's palms with a fierce strike
following another ranging run, while Balotelli was squeezed out by Tomkins
after being released by the former Barcelona man. Balotelli was becoming
increasingly irritated by his inability to make an impact and shortly after
picking up a caution for dissent, he was withdrawn by manager Roberto
Mancini. The 20-year-old's petulance appeared to disrupt his team's rhythm
and allowed the momentum to swing back into West Ham's hands. Grant's men
set about pressing with real intent, forcing a couple of defensive mix-ups
and an unsuccessful penalty appeal for what looked like a handball by Yaya
Toure. On came Kieron Dyer and Cole as Grant went for all-out attack and
there was to be another goal - but it went the way of City. Yaya Toure raced
forward to collect Nigel de Jong's pass and waltzed past Tomkins to go
one-on-one with Green. His shot came back off the woodwork but ricocheted in
off the goalkeeper's back. It was three when Johnson, on for Balotelli,
latched on to David Silva's slide-rule pass and evaded Green to roll into an
unguarded net. Tomkins nodded Obinna's corner past Hart with the aid of a
deflection off Kolo Toure at the death, but it proved too little too late.

West Ham are now four points adrift of safety after going down 3-1 at home
to title-chasers Man City at the Boleyn this afternoon. With just one game
to play before Christmas, Avram Grant's side are in serious danger of going
into the holiday period bottom of the table - a position from which only one
team has managed to survive since the Premier League's inception. Yaya Toure
gave the visitors a half time lead with a fiercely-struck drive on the half
hour mark. But it wasn't until the 74th minute until that lead was doubled
when Rob Green was credited with an own goal after Toure's close range
strike rebounded off the post and rebounded off the unfortunate 'keeper. Sub
Andy Johnson added a third with the Hammers defence at sixes and sevens nine
minutes from time before James Tomkins notched a consolation goal with a
header from a corner. Avram Grant revealed after the game that he was
annoyed by referee Phil Dowd's decision not to award a penalty for a fairly
obvious second half hand ball with the score at 0-1. Grant has regularly
criticised referees for decisions going against his team this season.

Toure too good for Hammers
Efficient City go level on points with Gunners at summit
Last updated: 11th December 2010
SSN

Man of the match: Yaya Toure takes the award for an all-action display that
included opening the scoring and inducing Rob Green into an unfortunate own
goal for the second.

Goal of the match: All three of City's goals were well-worked, but Toure's
opener gets my vote as he unleashed a powerful effort which was beyond Green
and into the back of the net before the keeper could move.

Moment of the match: Balotelli's show of petulance in marching straight down
the tunnel after being substituted shortly after the hour mark will
doubtless generate plenty of questions over his attitude.

Pass of the match: David Silva showed his class with a slide-rule ball
through for Adam Johnson for City's third goal nine minutes from time.

Talking points: How important was it for City to prove they could win
without Carlos Tevez? Can West Ham drag themselves off the foot of the
table?

Yaya Toure inspired Manchester City to a functional 3-1 victory over hapless
West Ham at Upton Park to move level with Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Roberto Mancini's men, missing captain and star striker Carlos Tevez, took
the lead midway through the first half when the Ivory Coast international
midfielder lashed home a powerful effort after being found by Gareth Barry.
And the former Barcelona man helped make it 2-0 to the visitors 17 minutes
from time, although it was unfortunate Hammers keeper Rob Green who was
credited with an own goal after Toure's shot hit the post and came back out
only to deflect home off the diving shot-stopper. Substitute Adam Johnson,
on for Mario Balotelli who had little impact on the match, added a third
nine minutes from time, rounding Green after a delightful slide-rule pass
from David Silva. City then switched off at the back to allow James Tomkins
to head home from a late corner via a deflection off Kolo Toure, but Avram
Grant's men remain rooted to the foot of the table after their latest
reverse. The visitors should have taken an early lead when Balotelli -
involved in a training ground bust-up with team-mate Jerome Boateng earlier
this month - missed his kick in the six-yard box from Jo's low cross. West
Ham looked to hit City on the counter-attack, but despite some promising
runs from Scott Parker, there were few options offered in the final third
and Junior Stanislas fired his 25-yard free-kick high into the Sir Trevor
Brooking Stand. Upton Park nearly sparked into life after 22 minutes when
Stanislas cut inside the City box from the left and drilled an angled strike
goalwards, which Joe Hart did well to hold.

Crashed

Yaya Toure ran through the West Ham rearguard, but his flick from just
inside the penalty area lacked power. City went in front after 30 minutes
after a quick break when Barry fed the ball back to Yaya Toure just inside
the area. Despite an attempted diving tackle by Jonathan Spector, the
midfielder crashed his shot into the top corner. The visitors went close to
a second goal when Pablo Barrera hacked Balotelli's header off the line. The
home fans, though, had little to cheer about, with the atmosphere inside
Upton Park very flat. Parker remained industrious and created space for a
20-yard effort, which sailed harmlessly wide. Julien Faubert did well to
turn and whip the ball across the City penalty area, and Frederic Piquionne
was unfortunate to see his header fly just over. West Ham needed some
inspiration for the second half, but there was little forthcoming - much to
the frustration of the home support. Victor Obinna drilled the ball in
towards the near post from the right, but Hart got there just ahead of
Piquionne. Yaya Toure tried his luck from long distance with a fierce
effort, but Green showed strong hands to pluck the ball out of the air.

Temperamental
There were more than a few hefty challenges being put in by both sides, as
referee Phil Dowd did his best to let the game flow. However, as the hour
mark approached, Balotelli had pushed his protests too far and was
cautioned. Mancini withdrew Balotelli immediately, sending on England
international Johnson, possibly to avoid the temperamental Italian getting
himself sent off. It just about summed up West Ham's afternoon when Obinna
cut the ball back from the byline, and Piquionne stepped over - only for
Barrera to blast his shot high into the Bobby Moore Stand. This was a good
spell for West Ham now, as for the first time in the match, City came under
some sustained pressure. There were penalty appeals for handball against
Yaya Toure as a corner came in, but with so many players jumping as the ball
ricocheted onto his arm, it would have been somewhat harsh. After 73
minutes, Yaya Toure picked up the ball on the left, ghosted past marker
Tomkins and darted goalwards. His shot hit the near post, bounced off the
unfortunate Green's back and into the net for an own goal. Not surprisingly,
all the spirit was drained from the hosts, who continued to defend deep. The
home side were caught again when Silva slipped in Johnson, who rounded Green
and wrapped things up for big-spending City with nine minutes left, before
Tomkins headed in a late consolation.

Grant - City better than us
Hammers boss looks to upcoming fixtures for solace
By Rob Parrish Last updated: 11th December 2010

Avram Grant admitted West Ham could not match Manchester City after watching
his side slip to a 3-1 defeat at Upton Park to remain at the foot of the
table. The under-pressure Israeli believes the forthcoming fixtures against
Blackburn, Fulham, Everton, Wolves and Newcastle will prove to be much more
important in their battle to beat the drop. Yaya Toure opened the scoring in
East London with a powerful strike in the first half before inducing Rob
Green into conceding an own goal after a driving run into the box for the
second. Adam Johnson added a third from David Silva's slide-rule pass before
City switched off at the back to allow James Tomkins to head home a late
consolation, with the visitors taking all three points without hitting top
gear. Grant admitted his struggling squad were simply not as strong as the
star-studded visitors, although he claimed his side should have been awarded
a penalty when the ball ricocheted off Yaya Toure's arm at point-blank
range.

Better than us

He told Sky Sports: "We played against a very good team, with very good
players. "They are a team that are better than us. Now we are going to play
against teams that are at our level and we need to do more. "There are too
many things this season, many strange things. You saw the handball when it
was 1-0, it was a penalty for us, but we decided not to complain and to try
and do our job. "The most important thing now is the next game. Our next
games are against the teams who are around us, teams that we need to take
points from and that is what is important. "We wanted to do something today,
the boys tried, but they were too strong for us. "Now we are playing games
that we can take points from and that is what is important. It will not be
easy, but we can take points."

West Ham 1 Man City 3

YAYA TOURE put on a masterclass as Manchester City pushed their title
credentials at lowly West Ham. The Ivorian midfielder fired City into a
first-half lead before another rasping drive set up Rob Green's 73rd-minute
own goal . Adam Johnson came off the bench to fire a third, with James
Tomkins' header a minute from time scant consolation for the beleaguered
Hammers. City now move into second in the table, level on points with
table-toppers Arsenal ahead of their clash with Manchester United on Monday.
West Ham meanwhile remain rock-bottom, four points from safety. Boss Avram
Grant had made four changes going into the game, with Julien Faubert, Pablo
Barrera, Junior Stanislas and Freddie Piquionne all named. City top-scorer
Carlos Tevez missed out against his old club through suspension, with
Brazilian Jo partnering Mario Balotelli in attack. And it was the visitors
who started the brighter, with Balotelli missing his kick in the six-yard
box from Jo's low cross. West Ham looked to hit City on the counter, but
despite some promising runs from Scott Parker, there were few options
offered in the final third. On 13 minutes they did get a free-kick 25-yards
out, only for Stanislas to fire his effort high into the Sir Trevor Brooking
Stand. Upton Park nearly sparked into life on 22 minutes when Stanislas cut
inside the City box from the left and drilled an angled strike goalwards,
only for Joe Hart to hold on. City went in front on 30 minutes after a swift
break. Gareth Barry fed the ball back to Yaya Toure just inside the area,
who crashed his shot into the top corner. The visitors then went close to a
second when Barrera hacked Balotelli's header off the line.
Upton Park was flat, although Parker continued to be their brightest spark
in midfield. The Hammers did carve one last chance before half-time though,
with Piquionne was unfortunate to see his header fly just over. City had won
their last nine games when they had boasted a lead at half time and West Ham
did not look like changing that. Victor Obinna drilled the ball in towards
the near post from the right, but Hart got there just ahead of Piquionne.
With Balotelli booked, City boss Mancini took him off for Johnson possibly
to avoid the temperamental Italian getting himself sent off. West Ham made a
change on 65 minutes, replacing Stanislas with Kieron Dyer and enjoyed some
sustained pressure. But their hopes of getting back into the game were
dashed with a huge slice of bad luck.
Yaya Toure ghosted past marker Tomkins and darted goalwards. His shot hit
the near post, bounced off the unfortunate Green's back and into the net.
Not surprisingly, all the spirit was drained from the hosts, who continued
to defend deep. The Irons were caught again when Silva slipped in Johnson,
who rounded Green and wrapped things up for big-spending City with nine
minutes left. Tomkins' late header did little to cheer up the departing
Hammers fans.

Match Report: West Ham 1 Manchester City 3
West Ham Till I Die

I do hope David Sullivan and David Gold listened to Avram Grant's post match
interview with Sky, because if they did, they will realise that he has not
got a clue as to how to rescue us from the precarious situation we find
ourselves in after this defeat. All he could repeat was the fact that the
next few games look easier than the last few. Wow. What a rallying cry that
is. Tactically, he had nothing in the box when we went one down and I don't
think anyone felt that there was any way back for us.

Having said all that, did we really deserve to lose 3-1? We held possession
for most of the first half of the second half, but to what effect? Apart
from a Stanislas shot and a Piquionne header we didn't threaten where we
needed to. Indeed, we didn't really threaten at all. There wasn't any lack
of commitment, it has to be said. Even Barrera got stuck into a good few
tackles. But we just couldn't, in the end, compete with the power of Toure,
De Jong and Barry. Spector was largely anonymous to the extent that I forgot
he was on the pitch. Parker, as usual, put in a tenacious performance but I
got the feeling he pulled back a little from some challenges, mindful that
he is on a suspension if he gets another yellow.

Defensively, right up until James Tomkins got turned for the second goal, we
had looked sound. I thought Tomkins, apart from that goal, was the man of
the match, totally eclipsing his defensive partner Upson, who yet afain was
completely anonymous. Indeed, why is he captain? Because it's in name only.
It was Parker who had to take up issue after issue with the dreadful referee
Phil Dowd. He gave so many decisions to Man City in the first 20 minutes it
was laughable. Ben Haim had a good game, and until the last part of the
game, so did Faubert. But where on earth was he for the second goal.

Obinna was busy, but to little effect, but he's the sort of player who you
always think might "do" something. Piquionne, I thought, was again
disappointingm but not quite as disappointing as Carlton Cole. Did he do
anything at all in the 25 minutes he was on the pitch? I certainly can't
recall much.

I have to admit, like many other people, I left after the third goal. I know
it's wrong, but I just couldn't help myself.

My only consolation today was meeting David Cross and his son for lunch in
Ken's Cafe. What a lovely man. He told a great story about a particular
superstition, which I am going to get him to write up for the blog.

Carlos Tevez wants to quit Manchester City: Troubled striker hands in
transfer request
EXCLUSIVE By JOE BERNSTEIN Last updated at 10:14 PM on 11th December 2010
Daily Mail

Homesick Carlos Tevez has rocked Manchester City by telling them he wants to
quit the club. Tevez has shocked club officials by handing in an official
written transfer request after deciding that he cannot carry on with his
life in Manchester. The 26-year-old is said to be suffering distress at
being separated from his two daughters, who live in Argentina, while his
relationship with City's Italian manager, Roberto Mancini, has been
stretched to breaking point. Tevez has told friends he will carry on working
hard for the team while he remains at the club but he is adamant that his
longterm future lies elsewhere. The bombshell move will devastate City fans
on the day they went joint-top of the Premier League on points - Arsenal
have a superior goal difference - with a 3-1 win at West Ham. The City fans
have taken Tevez to their hearts following his controversial £26.5million
move across Manchester from United and he has repaid them with 39 goals in
60 games and wearing the captain's armband. There will be no shortage of
takers for Tevez, with Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan all
admirers of the player. But the striker has not ruled out retiring from
football altogether to be a full-time father. City's reaction to Tevez's
transfer request will be fascinating. Senior figures such as chief executive
Garry Cook have regarded him as the club's talisman from the moment they
displayed controversial 'Welcome to Manchester' posters around the city to
wind up United.

Following last weekend's standup row between Mancini and Tevez after the
manager substituted him in the win against Bolton despite the striker
scoring the winner, City media outlets ran a major interview with the player
during which he praised his boss and pledged his loyalty to the club. But
that is already out-of-date and City's wish to offer him a lucrative
five-year deal in the summer is just a pipedream. The club would ideally
want at least £35million for Tevez and that is if they can get their heads
around losing him. But the player will hope they accept his personal reasons
for wanting to leave. He has complained in the past about missing his family
and he makes regular trips back to Argentina. Although respected by other
City players, his lack of fluent English means he often cuts an isolated
figure and, significantly, he did not attend the club's Christmas party last
Saturday. A big admirer of City's previous manager, Mark Hughes, Tevez does
not enjoy the same relationship with Mancini. The pair clashed in the
dressing-room at half-time during this season's home game against Newcastle
and Tevez was visibly angered by being taken off against Bolton.
