meet the Reds

Liverpool v West Ham United
Barclays Premier League
Anfield
Monday 19 April 2010
8pm
Referee: Peter Walton

• West Ham United travel to the city of Liverpool for the second time this
month to take on Rafael Benitez's Reds. The club's last awayday saw the
Hammers earn a 2-2 draw at city rivals Everton and a repeat or better would
be a major shot in the arm for Barclays Premier League survival hopes.

• Gianfranco Zola's men went into the weekend four points clear of the drop
zone, meaning that they will stay out of the bottom three whatever happens
on Monday night. After the Everton result, the club won for the first time
in eight matches with a 1-0 home win against Sunderland last Saturday.

• The Hammers have still not won away since the opening day of the season on
15 August, while Liverpool have been impressive at home. They have lost just
twice in the top-flight at Anfield this season and taken 39 points from a
possible 51.

• Gianfranco Zola will be without Scott Parker after the Hammer of the Year
- and the SBOBET Player of the Month for March - was cautioned at Everton.
He served the first game of his two-match ban against Sunderland.

• Liverpool go into the match on the back of their owners Tom Hicks and
George Gillett confirming on Friday that they intend to sell the club.
British Airways boss Martin Broughton has been appointed to oversee the
sale.

• The match is almost a must-win for Liverpool if they want to catch
Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the three-way race for fourth place
- and a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

• This is the 105th league meeting between the two sides. Liverpool have won
55, West Ham have won 21 and there have been 29 draws.

• Monday's match will be screened live by ESPN, as was the previous meeting
between the clubs back on Saturday 19 September at the Boleyn Ground. West
Ham have been on the losing side in the four previous matches shown live by
ESPN this season.

• The last meeting between the sides at Anfield came on 1 December 2008,
when Craig Bellamy hitting the post was the closest either came to scoring
in a lively goalless draw. Fernando Torres did not play in the match.

Next up

• West Ham United will welcome Wigan Athletic on Saturday 24 April, while
Liverpool travel to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid for their UEFA Europa
League semi-final on Thursday night.

Referee

• Monday's referee is Peter Walton.

• Walton, 50, began his refereeing career in 1986 and was an assistant
referee at the 1996 FA Cup final between Manchester United and Liverpool at
Wembley. That same year, he also joined the FIFA list of assistant referees
and ran the line during the Euro 96 group-stage fixture between Germany and
Czech Republic at Old Trafford.

• Walton joined the Football League List of referees in 1998 and joined the
Premier League Select List in 2003.

• This will be his third West Ham United game of the season, after taking
charge of the 4-0 home defeat to Manchester United on 5 December and the
goalless draw against Blackburn Rovers at the Boleyn Ground on 30 January.

• He has taken charge of six Liverpool games this season. The 4-0 win
against Stoke City on the opening day, the 6-1 defeat of Hull in September
and the 2-2 draw with Birmingham City. Those three successes all came at
Anfield, before he was the man in the middle for the 1-0 defeat at Aston
Villa in December and the goalless draws at Wolves and Manchester City in
January and February respectively.

West Ham United

• Carlton Cole, with nine goals to date this campaign, has still never
scored two goals in a game for West Ham.

• Robert Green is on a run of 122 unbroken starts in the Barclays Premier
League.

• Valon Behrami has committed 34 fouls since his last caution, no other
player in the top-flight has had to wait longer for a yellow card..

• Alessandro Diamanti's eight goals in all competitions has left him just
one behind top scorer Carlton Cole.

• In terms of attacking ambition, Diamanti leads the Hammers statistics in
terms of shots (81), shots on target (44), shots off target (37) and assists
(4).

• Behrami celebrates his 25th birthday on Monday, the day after Matthew
Upson turns 31.

• Mark Noble will make his 100th Barclays Premier League appearance if
selected.

• West Ham have scored 41 goals this season in the league with 15 different
players on target. Carlton Cole leads the way (nine), with Alessandro
Diamanti (seven), Guille Franco (four), Matthew Upson and Ilan (both three)
next in line. Jack Collison, Mark Noble, Junior Stanislas and Manuel da
Costa have each scored twice. Finally, the departed Luis Jimenez, Zavon
Hines, Radoslav Kovac, Valon Behrami, Julien Faubert and Scott Parker have
also registered. An own-goal from Everton's Tony Hibbert completes the
tally.

• No team has been awarded more penalties than West Ham in the top flight
this season, with nine given to the Hammers and seven of them have been
converted.

• Parker has been cautioned ten times this season, and his caution at
Everton means he missed the Sunderland date as well as the trip to
Liverpool.

• * The visitors will be looking to record their first win on Merseyside
since 14 September 1963. The London side have lost on their last eight
visits there since goals from Frank Lampard and Marc Keller helped secure a
2-2 draw in February 1999.

* West Ham United's last win at Anfield, on 14 September 1963, came courtesy
of goals from Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst. Jim Standen also saved a
penalty from Ronnie Moran in the match.

Liverpool

• Steven Gerrard leads the Liverpool in all attacking categories: shots
(80), shots on target (48), shots off target (32), assists (6), crosses
(115).

• Liverpool, along with Burnley, have hit the woodwork on 13 occasions this
season, a league-leading statistic.

• Pepe Reina, who has just signed a new long-term contract, is tied with
Petr Cech of Chelsea for the most clean sheets this season (14).

• Two Liverpool players, Jamie Carragher and Dirk Kuyt, made their debuts
against West Ham. Carragher's first appearance came at Anfield in January
1997, while Kuyt's came at Anfield in August 2006.

• Striker Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick against West Ham in Liverpool's
4-0 win at Anfield on 5 March 2008..

• Alberto Aquilani received extensive treatment for an ankle injury at
Chadwell Heath while still a AS Roma player in the 2008/09 campaign before
his summer move to Liverpool.

• Liverpool's record home win against West Ham was a 6-0 success on 7 April
1984, a month before they became crowned champions of Europe in Rome.

Team news

• With Scott Parker absent through suspension, Herita Ilunga (tendon
injury), James Tomkins (ankle), Kieron Dyer (hamstring) are all unable to
return to the squad. It remains to be seen if they will figure again this
season.

• Mido is available for selection after a virus kept him out last week.

• Luis Boa Morte is back in the reserves after missing the whole season to
date with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and other knee problems
suffered last July.

• Zavon Hines will not play again this season with a knee injury, while Jack
Collison is also not expected to feature with his own knee problem.

• Liverpool have major concerns over Fernando Torres, who has scored 18
league goals this season and 22 in all competitions. He has been troubled by
a knee injury.

• Emiliano Insua and Fabio Aurelio both have knocks, meaning Daniel Agger
could continue at left-back.

• Martin Skrtel is close to a return from a foot injury but is not thought
to be ready yet.

Old boys

• Liverpool and Israel midfielder Yossi Benayoun made 72 appearances,
scoring eight goals, during two seasons at West Ham United. Benayoun, who
turned 29 on 5 May, arrived from Spanish side Racing Santander in the summer
of 2005 before leaving for Anfield in July 2007.

• Glen Johnson, 25, came through the ranks at West Ham, making 15 league
appearances in the 2002/03 season. He was transferred to Chelsea for £6m in
summer 2003 and subsequently moved on to Portsmouth before Liverpool snapped
him up in June 2009.

• Liverpool and Argentina defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano spent
half-a-season with West Ham United between August 2007 and January 2008. The
24-year-old made seven appearances in all competitions for the Hammers.

• Among the other players who have represented both clubs are Craig Bellamy,
Tom Bradshaw, David Burrows, Titi Camara, Charles Cotton, Julian Dicks, Ray
Houghton, Don Hutchison, Paul Ince, David James, Rob Jones, George Kay, Mike
Marsh, Neil Mellor, Neil Ruddock, Danny Shone, Rigobert Song and Thomas
Stanley.

Zola eyes Anfield repeat
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola is eager to score West Ham United's first victory at
Liverpool in nearly 47 years
17.04.2010

The date is 11 June 1996 and Gianfranco Zola has done something that West
Ham United have not achieved since 1963 - won at Anfield. That day, Zola was
part of the victorious Italy side which scored a 2-1 Group C victory over
Czech Republic at UEFA Euro 96 - with both goals being scored by his close
friend and strike partner Pierluigi Casiraghi. Nearly 13 years later, the
Hammers manager believes his players can end the club's 47-year hoodoo at
the home of Liverpool. "The confidence level is definitely higher than
before. We're going there [to win] and I think we have found a way to be
more effective. We know that, until the end, the important thing is going to
be to fight very hard until the point when we can play with a little bit
more freedom. "We will go and give everything we have got, and hopefully it
is going to be enough. "I did win there as a player. We are expecting a
difficult game over there because of their team. We can do it, though. We
have a lot of motivation and enthusiasm to do it, so we will have a go."

Liverpool go into the game contending with the twin distractions of a
prospective takeover in the summer and a UEFA Europa League semi-final,
first-leg trip to Atletico Madrid less than 72 hours after Monday's meeting.
"They might be [distractions], but I don't think we have to rely on them. We
have to rely on ourselves if we want to get a good result. We have to put in
a good performance and everyone has to work very hard. On top of that, if we
have advantages, then that is good, but I honestly believe we need to do it
ourselves."

While Zola will be without the suspended Scott Parker for the trip to
Anfield, he lauded the impact made by Ilan - who scored important goals in
the 2-2 draw at Everton and 1-0 win over Sunderland - and Mark Noble, who
took the Hammer of the Year's place in central midfield against the Black
Cats to good effect. "Ilan, everybody saw, scored two goals that got us four
points, so he really affected the game both times. I'm delighted for him.
"Mark Noble obviously came on and gave us a lot of energy and enthusiasm and
those things, right now, are priceless. So I'm very pleased that he's back
on form and I think he's getting better and better. "It's important [that
the other players step up]. Scott is a very talented and important player
for us, but we have to remember that, last year, we played without Scott for
a long time and got good results. We have to be a team. We know that if
everybody works hard as a team then, even if we are missing one important
player, we can get a good result."

Another player who the manager has been delighted to see back on the
training pitch this week is Luis Boa Morte, who made a successful return to
reserve-team action at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday evening - even if
it is a case of slowly but surely for the popular midfielder. "It was very
nice. Last year, he wasn't only important at the end because he played, but
he was important throughout the year because of his enthusiasm and his
positive attitude. He was very important for the whole team. We missed him a
lot on the pitch and off the pitch and now I hope he is going to be able to
play before the end of the season. That will be massive for us."

Striking opportunity at Liverpool
WHUFC.com,
With five forwards vying for selection, Gianfranco Zola is hoping for goals
on Monday night
17.04.2010

Gianfranco Zola is "spoilt for choice" up front as West Ham United travel to
take on a Liverpool side sweating on the fitness of Fernando Torres. Spain
striker Torres has been a thorn in the Hammers' side in the past, scoring
twice in the 3-2 win at the Boleyn Ground last September and a hat-trick in
a 4-0 win at Anfield back in March 2008. There is real concern at Liverpool
that he will not recover from a knee problem in time, with the Reds also
looking to a UEFA Europa League semi-final at Atletico Madrid next Thursday.
Zola, who is without the suspended Scott Parker, meanwhile will pair Carlton
Cole and Ilan up front, but also has the fit-again Mido, after a virus,
Benni McCarthy and Guille Franco pushing for places on the substitutes'
bench. "We are spoilt for choice up front," Zola said on a sunny Saturday
morning at Chadwell Heath. "We have everybody back and Mido is also fit
again. It will give me the opportunity to have a choice which is always a
good thing for a manager. "Ilan has been doing very well. I am really
impressed. The boy waited for his opportunity. He is using that now very
well. He will start on Monday."
The manager said there was a "plan B" for getting to Liverpool should
volcanic ash drifting over from Iceland mean the club are unable to fly on
Sunday afternoon. Whether the team take to the air or the road, Zola will
make sure they head north with a clear focus on the task facing them.
"Liverpool still have something in their bag to cause us problems. I know
Torres is a big asset for them but to be honest I like David Ngog very much.
I am sure he could be a problem any way. We don't have to really be thinking
that if Torres doesn't play, it is a big advantage for us. We have to
perform. "What ever team they play they will always be a tough game for us.
That is for sure. We need to make sure that first of all, we play a good
performance and then we will also have to be a little bit lucky."
A win last time out against Sunderland and a 2-2 draw at Everton before that
has raised morale at Chadwell Heath. Complacency is a danger with plenty of
points still up for grabs. "Things are a little bit better but we have to
keep focused because it is a championship where you can't really relax. The
gap between the clubs at the bottom is very close. One bad game could cause
a lot of problems."
With the Hammers on 31 points, the manager believed two wins from the final
four games would make sure of survival. "Sometime ago we said 34 points
could be enough. I don't know, I have got my doubts right now. It is still
close. We will see. I would assume that to be completely safe 36 points
would do it."
He was also not worried about playing on Monday night, after the relegation
rivals had all been in action over the weekend. "It could be good for us to
see what the others do. To be honest, I am not taking too much interest in
that because you have to play and you have to perform well yourself. Really
I am not giving that too much attention."

Monday test for Bondz
WHUFC.com
A high-profile date for Bondz N'Gala could be the difference between
survival and relegation
18.04.2010

Bondz N'Gala faces his biggest test yet at loan club Plymouth Argyle when
the Pilgrims welcome newly-promoted Newcastle United on Monday night. The
20-year-old central defender has done well in his six appearances since his
move to Home Park but Plymouth are still fighting to avoid relegation from
the Championship. With three matches to play, the Green Army are six points
from safety. Elsewhere in the division, Freddie Sears did not feature as
Coventry City drew 1-1 with Preston North End to all but ensure survival.
Also on Saturday, Frank Nouble played 20 minutes off the bench as League One
promotion hopefuls Swindon Town drew 1-1 at home against Walsall. Matt Fry,
the fourth Academy graduate out on loan, has yet to feature for Charlton
Athletic, who are also looking likely for a play-off spot despite losing 1-0
at home to Norwich City.

Four-star show from U18s

Academy Director Tony Carr's youngsters defeated MK Dons with four
second-half goals on Saturday
17.04.2010

West Ham United Under-18s extended their unbeaten FA Premier Academy League
run to six matches with a 4-0 victory at MK Dons. After being held goalless
for the opening 55 minutes, Danny Subuola, Matthias Fanimo (pictured), Dylan
Tombides and Dominic Vose all found the target to complete a comprehensive
success. The only sour note came in the shape of a late red card for Vose.
Having draw their previous three league matches 1-1, the Hammers took
advantage of a free weekend by defeating LA Galaxy 5-0 seven days ago, and
Tony Carr's side demonstrated the same ruthless streak at an MK Dons side
that have won just two of their 26 league games this season. After being
frustrated throughout a tight first half, Subuola put the Hammers ahead from
Vose's low cross before Fanimo scored a carbon-copy goal from George
Moncur's centre. Tombides made it 3-0 before Vose cut inside from the left
and curled a shot in off the far post. West Ham have now won eight, drawn
eight and lost eight of their 24 league matches, and return to action at
Arsenal on Wednesday morning. Carr's youngsters complete their campaign with
trips to Watford and Southampton before hosting Charlton Athletic on Friday
7 May. Post-match reaction from Academy Director Tony Carr will appear on
whufc.com on Monday.

West Ham United: Mehmet, Young, Craig, Lampe, Modelski, Moncur, Turgott
(Fanimo 30), Wearen (Hurley 65), Vose, Tombides, Subuola (Werndly 60)

Da Costa eyes Reds revenge
WHUFC.com
Manuel da Costa is eager to make up for two UEFA Champions League defeats at
the hands of Liverpool
18.04.2010

Manuel da Costa is keen to bury his memories his UEFA Champions League
heartache when West Ham United head to Liverpool. The Portuguese defender
was part of the PSV Eindhoven side beaten 2-0 at Anfield in the group stage
of European club football's most prestigious competition in November 2006.
Five months later Da Costa was back on Merseyside as PSV, who had knocked
out Arsenal in the previous round, were beaten 4-0 on aggregate by the Reds
in the quarter-finals of the same tournament. Three years on, the
23-year-old is determined to gain revenge for those results in Monday's
Barclays Premier League showdown, allowing him to taste victory over
Liverpool at the fifth attempt in the process. "We played against Arsenal
and after that, we played at Liverpool. That was very hard. They were a very
strong team and it was difficult for PSV. At the time, we were not doing
very well in Holland - we were 15 points off the top of the table and had
not won in four games when we played the first game at home. "It was
difficult because we were playing against a big team. I remember we lost 3-0
and then we went to Anfield. It's not every week that you go to Liverpool
and win, and we lost the second leg 1-0, but I was on the bench."
As a youngster growing up in the suburbs of the city of Nancy in north east
France, Da Costa remembers seeing footage of the great Liverpool sides of
the 1970s and 1980s. While the Reds have fallen some way from those lofty
heights, the centre-back believes they will rise again - but not until after
Monday night's encounter. "I respect them as a team. I remember when I was a
child, I saw videos and Liverpool was a big team. They may have gone down a
little bit, but they are historically a big team. They are now starting to
come back with a new story. "Now, when all the players speak about
Liverpool, they say they are a big team, but I am going there to win. You
respect them for their history and as a big team before and the game, but
when you play, you don't respect them."

MATCH PREVIEW
With the club put up for sale this week, Liverpool fans will be hoping the
2009/10 season can quickly be consigned to the past. Champions League
qualification looks unlikely and that, for Liverpool, represents a miserable
campaign. Liverpool need to win their remaining games - including the visit
of leaders Chelsea - to have any chance of snatching fourth place. Manager
Rafa Benitez could be forgiven for making Thursday's Europa League
semi-final against Atletico Madrid his priority.
West Ham are fighting for survival at the other end of the table but have
found some form recently. Unbeaten in April, they have inched four points
above the relegation zone.
As with Liverpool, there could be big changes at West Ham in the summer,
with manager Gianfranco Zola's future unclear. "My focus is to get them
(West Ham) safe and then we will see what happens," he told Five Live this
week.

West Ham's Luis Boa Morte back after eight months out
BBC.co.uk

West Ham winger Luis Boa Morte made his comeback in a reserve game against
Wolves on Tuesday night after being out for eight months with a knee injury.
The Portuguese international damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his
right knee against Tottenham in a tournament in China in July 2009. Boa
Morte, 32, played the first half at Telford's New Bucks Head ground before
being replaced by Anthony Edgar. Wolves, with seven full internationals in
their side, won the match 4-1. Boa Morte has won 26 caps and scored two
goals for his country and featured at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The
former Sporting Lisbon player began his career in English football with
Arsenal in 1997 before having a brief spell at Southampton. He then spent
six years at Fulham and joined West Ham for £5m in 2007. Boa Morte was a
first-team regular for the next two seasons before being hampered by the
pre-season injury.

It was a good day for West Ham in the Premier League this afternoon as the
end of the campaign draws ever nearer. With United not playing until Monday
night when they visit Liverpool, the key games in this afternoon's programme
were Hull's trip to Birmingham and Burnley's visit to Sunderland. Both sides
started the day four points behind the Hammers (Hull with a game in hand). A
spirited fightback from the Clarets wasn't enough to prevent them falling to
a 2-1 defeat at Sunderland. Frazier Campbell and Darren Bent put the Black
Cats two goals in the clear ahead of the half-time break before substitute
Steven Thompson gave Burnley a fighting chance with an 81st minute close
range effort. A flurry of late corners for the visitors failed to come to
anything leaving Brian Laws' side on 27 points from 35 games. Over in the
Midlands it was a far closer affair between the two Citys, mid-table
Birmingham and Hull, desperate for a result following last weekend's
capitulation at the hands of relegation rivals Burnley. Despite being the
better side for much of the 90 minutes Iain Dowie's team failed to make the
vital breakthrough and had to settle for a point that leaves them three
points behind West Ham, but with a far inferior goal difference. Both sides
had opportunities to grab all three points at St Andrews but in the end a
point had to suffice. In other games, Bolton ensured that they will be
playing Premier League football once again next season by virtue of a 2-1
win at Stoke.

How they saw it - the opposition view

The Burnley view (claretsturf.co.uk)

"It wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination and after going a goal
down so early on I was thinking Man City (1-6) all over again. But how wrong
I was. The fight, belief and commitment the team showed has to be commended
- I just wonder why it has taken until we are on the verge of relegation for
them to show what Burnley FC are all about. Here's hoping it continues for
the remaining 4 games." - Chris Yates

The Hull view (ambernectar.org)

"We didn't lose, that with our side is as good as it gets. A half decent
performance, but why play with one up front?" - cartoonhead

"More spirit and fight I suppose but unfortunately the same quality,
everywhere. A draw against Villa will be more of a result and if results go

Liverpool v West Ham United: Match Preview
KUMB.com
Filed: Saturday, 17th April 2010
By: Preview Percy

We blew up a volcano in an attempt to stop him. Unfortunately the resulting
cloud of ash failed to delay the buses so Preview Percy's back again and,
gawd 'elp us, this time he's quoting T S Eliot....

Next it's a swift return to the land of the boarded-up buildings for a trip
to Anfield for a punter-unfriendly 8pm kick-off against the red and whiny
half of the city.

It is but a few months since manager Rafael Benitez guaranteed the Anfield
faithful a place in the top four. This makes their current position in 6th
place highly amusing. They currently lie some 6 points behind Man City who
currently occupy fourth spot with a game in hand and a 7 goal advantage in
the goal difference department. Funnier still is the fact that they are only
one point clear of Villa in the last Europa League spot. The Europa League
is, of course, a much-coveted trophy and is in no way the second-class
tournament that the home supporters were saying it was before their exit
from the so-called "Champions" league. They are therefore faced with the
possibility that they will not be in Europe at all next season, though they
will, no doubt try to find some legal loophole that will satisfy what they
see as their divine right to European football.

All the main stories emanating from that part of the world at the moment
seem to relate to off the field stuff. They recently appointed Martin
Broughton, of British Airways to head the club. The effect was instant, as
thousands of supporters found their half time pie options reduced to a
choice of beef or chicken, a culinary delight followed by the kiosk
attendant pouring coffee straight into their laps. Still it could have been
worse – had they given the job to anyone from Ryanair they'd have found
themselves charged extra for having the pie warmed up and they'd be watching
home matches miles away from home – Liverpool (Runcorn) anyone?

Broughton's arrival is tied in with the announcement that Barclays Capital
have been appointed by the club's US owners to handle the sale of the club.
That is not going to be the easiest of jobs. Quite apart from the question
of whether or not it is ever advisable to buy anything second-hand in that
part of the world, the way that the septics handled the original purchase
has left the club with a significant level of debt. The club's bankers, RBS
(i.e. you and me) have been looking nervously at the amounts involved for a
while now and the debt – currently in the region of £240m - was rescheduled
last summer just before a rather large repayment was due.

Just to add to the mix we have recently been treated to the annual
announcement of which club Benitez definitely hasn't been talking to,
honest. This time round it's Juventus with whom there have been absolutely
no discussions, though given that there is likely to be a change at the top
at the Bernebau at the end of the season, we can expect Benitez and his
agent to be holding absolutely no discussions at all with Real Madrid any
day now. Again.

Unless the bods at Sky are being incredibly selective in their choice of
interviewee (surely not!), it seems that the supporters are being remarkably
tolerant with the manager, with Hicks and Gillet seemingly being held
responsible for all that ails them. Well I suppose zonal marking is
something that they use in basketball. It would be interesting to see if the
Americans would get quite so much stick if the team were actually
performing. Or, conversely, if Benitez would be getting away with quite so
much murder if the club didn't owe quite so much money.

In amongst all that their form has been decidedly mixed of late. They've won
two, drawn two and lost two of their last six. Their last two matches have
finished in draws, 0-0 at home to Fulham and 1-1 away at Birmingham. The
gifted but increasingly petulant Torres was substituted after 65 minutes at
St Andrews and his body language as he walked off spoke volumes. Steve
"caught red handed but never guilty" Gerrard was so surprised at the move
that he quite forgot to dive for a bit.

Torres is listed as an unlikely participant on Monday. All that running into
people then moaning when the ref fails to give a free-kick has taken its
toll on his knees. He was due to pop back to Spain for a check-up this
weekend but at the time of writing his journey has fallen foul of the cloud
of volcanic ash currently sitting over the country. John Lennon Airport
(so-named as it was the first place that the Beatles headed for as soon as
they had made a few quid, allegedly), has been closed and not even the
club's new chairman has been able to sort anything out. Still, had it been
Ryanair Torres would probably have been paying for his own flight. Medical
comment keeps stressing the need for Torres to rest and his appearance or
otherwise on Monday night may depend as much on how results go elsewhere
this weekend as it does on huge plumes of volcanic ash.

Others on the sick list are defenders Aurelio (thigh), Insua (thigh) and
Skrtel (ankle/foot/missing vowel in surname). This will mean Daniel Agger
probably filling in at left back.

Talking of injuries, one of their biggest disappointments of the season for
them has been the absence of big money signing Aquilani, who has spent a lot
of time on the sick since his arrival for £17m during the close season.
Benitez recently queried the player's mental attitude to his injury
problems. However, Merseyside is probably not the right place to be
criticising somebody for claiming sick pay when they appear to be fit and,
given the fact that Aquilani was signed from Roma, he's probably just trying
to fit in by taking the phrase "when in Rome" to its logical conclusion.
Whatever the reasoning behind Benitez's comments – and I suppose we cannot
rule out a SuGo-style "motivational" motive – Aquilani did apparently have a
decent game against Fulham, being thwarted by Mark Schwarzer on a number of
occasions.

Elsewhere in the squad there are a few ex-Hammers to be found. Yossi
Benayoun's transfer continued a long tradition of illegal work in the
transfer market by a club that seems to be above all football regulations in
this area. Portsmouth's financial problems saw them nipping in to rescue
Glen Johnson's career, which had taken a marked turn for the worse since his
promising start in the disastrous relegation season at the Boleyn. He's now
a regular in the England set-up and he seems to have got over his
predilection for shoplifting toilet seats, which is a bit of a shame really
because, as his skipper will probably tell him, Liverpool players are above
the law in that part of the world.

Then there is Javier Mascherano who made a few fleeting appearances before
disappearing North West. Liverpool were given special permission from FIFA
to sign the player in a regulation-busting deal, something that cheesed off
a number of Spanish clubs who tried to make similar signings on the same
basis, namely that the Argentinian season was not coterminous with that of
those in Europe. One law for them....

So how about us? Well things are looking, if not exactly marvellous, well a
little more rosy than they were at the start of the month. TS Eliot may have
banged on about what a cruel month April is (clearly there was someone that
never had the joys of having to endure the long wait until January payday or
the seemingly interminable wait for the fixtures to come out in June), but
so far it's a month that has been ok for us. The impressive performance up
the road at Goodison was followed by a morale-boosting victory against
Sunderland whose boss predictably moaned about the refereeing whilst
ignoring the fact that, but for said referee, his side would probably been
3-0 down well before he had anything to moan about.

Injuries, well there are still a few. Tomkins, Collison and Ilunga are all
most unlikely to appear. Though he made a most-welcome reappearance in a
midweek reserve match, it's far too early for Luis Boa Morte to join the
first team squad as yet. However, the fact that LBM is closer to a first
team appearance than Kieron Dyer probably says something or other. Benni
McCarthy isn't showing up on any of the usual lists and therefore might be
about to make the squad. Similarly Mido, who was absent with a virus last
time out (something he ate perhaps?), should also be about to challenge Cole
and Ilan for a starting place.

Scott Parker will be missing of course, thanks to the appalling standard of
refereeing in this country which has left him suspended, this being the
second of a two match ban. Mark Noble, in line to make his 100th top flight
appearance, had a fine match last week and it often seems to be the case
that he has his better matches when Parker is away.

Ok it's time for a reality check here. September 1963 was the last time we
got maximum points at Anfield (two in those days). I was two years old at
the time. For all their indifferent form, at home Liverpool are a different
prospect and they've won 5 and drawn 1 of the last six there. There's the
traditional refereeing advantage that they enjoy at home – though for a
while it's usually been a case of officials being unnerved by the deathly
silence that has been the rule rather than the exception at Anfield in
recent years. In short, history and home form should be against us getting
much out of this one.

However, the draw at Everton showed that going into matches with some sort
of positive mental attitude can get results. It's just a shame that we
didn't go into the match at Old Trafford with the same "give it a go"
mentality. The last two games will have done everyone the power of good – a
recent chat with a (non-playing staff) club employee remarked on how the
mood at Chadwell Heath had lightened since Goodison. So I'm really going to
stick my neck out here. If we go for this one in the manner of Imran Khan's
famous "cornered tigers" we could pull off a shock so I'll go for an
odds-busting 2-1 win based on absolutely no logic whatsoever other than one
day I'll be right so why not now?!

Enjoy the game!

Last Season: 0-0 - Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole both missed chances to
gain a memorable win, though it was the fine defensive performance that
caught the eye.

Danger Man: Steve Gerrard - If you think about tackling he will dive and
score from the resulting free-kick. If you don't he'll score anyway.

Referee: Peter Walton – Last seen by us having an erratic match in our 0-0
draw at home to Blackburn. If nothing else he should be suspended for using
the word "stakeholder" on his profile page on the referees' official
website. He'll be doing that thing with his fingers to signify inverted
commas next.

Clarke confident of survival
Number two says Hammers can stay up
By Mike Barton Last updated: 17th April 2010
SSN

West Ham assistant manager Steve Clarke has spoken of his confidence that
his side can take points from their game against Liverpool on Monday. The
Hammers have not achieved a victory at Anfield since 1963, but need to win
this encounter to secure a vital three points in their fight against
relegation. Despite the Reds only losing two games at home all season, they
have flattered to deceive in many games and not lived up to the high
expectations put on them by their supporters this season, looking unlikely
to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. West Ham have taken four points
from their last two fixtures, moving them four points clear of the drop
zone, and Clarke believes his side can deliver a result that could see them
safe. "It's been a difficult season right from the start, but we're still in
there fighting," he told the clubs official website. "We'll focus on the
fixture on Monday night at Liverpool and, if we continue doing what we have
been doing, we'll be okay. "The best thing to do now is to get the points
that we require. We're not sure what the points tally will be, so we go to
Liverpool, we give a good account of ourselves and then we take stock on
Tuesday. Clarke, who is number two to Gianfranco Zola, is used to coping
under pressure, having been assistant to Jose Mourinho in their title
winning days at Chelsea. But the Scot is confident that his team can handle
the demands and make sure they will be playing top flight football when the
Premier League kicks off again in August. "Obviously the last couple of
results were good for us and we have to build on them. The finishing line is
in sight and we have to keep going," he added. "We have to achieve the
objective of staying in the Premier League and we're all confident we can do
that. "We're focused on the next gamer. That's as far as we look. "At this
moment in it would be foolish for us to look further ahead, so we look at
the next game and getting the points required to keep West Ham United in the
Premier League."

Cole relishing England chance
Striker pays tribute to current coach
By Hayley Paterson Last updated: 17th April 2010
SSN

Carlton Cole said he will be a 'proud man' if he is selected for England's
World Cup squad and that Fabio Capello likes how he has improved. The
26-year-old has had a stop-start season with the Hammers having overcome a
serious knee injury which kept him on the sidelines for two months during a
season in which Gianfranco Zola's men have struggled to maintain consistency
and found themselves hovering above the relegation zone. However the
powerful frontman has already netted nine goals, is regarded at the lynchpin
of West Ham's efforts to avoid relegation and is in contention for a spot in
the final 23-man squad set for South Africa. "I think Fabio Capello likes
me," Cole told The Independent. "Maybe he can see I have got the potential
to be a good footballer and I am still willing to learn. "I have improved
over the last 18 months rapidly and I have still got loads to do as well. He
can see that I am trying. "He loves that endeavour in a player, who wants to
learn and never gives up."
The former Chelsea trainee had high hopes of following in the same vein as
Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney after breaking into the
Blues first team at the tender age of 19. However with the arrival of
multi-millionaire Roman Abramovich and several big-money signings, Cole
found himself surplus to requirements and craving first-team football so
left Stamford Bridge for Upton Park in 2006. "I felt that I was going to
have the same kind of career as Rooney," said the towering 6ft 3in forward.
"I have learnt a lot of hard lessons. "It has matured me better maybe than
if I had gone straight to the top."
Cole paid tribute to his current coach and former team-mate Zola for
bringing the best out of his game which has also led to the striker getting
five international caps since August and being classed as a top contender
for Capello's final World Cup selection to be announced on 1st June. "He
(Zola) just had faith in me. He told the team, 'Give the ball to Carlton and
he will do what he does best'," said Cole. On his chances of World Cup
selection, he added: "If it does happen and I go to the World Cup with
England, I'll be a proud man. If it doesn't I'll still feel that way. "I
feel I have come a long way from where I was 18 months ago. It has been a
long journey and I am proud of what I have achieved."

Zola believes in survival
Hammers boss delighted at recent run
Last updated: 16th April 2010
SSN

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola is of the firm belief that his
relegation-threatened side will stay up. The Hammers had lost six straight
games and looked doomed for the drop prior to drawing at Everton and getting
the better of Sunderland last time out. That priceless victory has moved
West Ham four points clear of the drop zone, however, that lead could be
trimmed to just a point if Hull City overcome Birmingham this weekend. West
Ham have a tricky-looking clash against Europa League semi-finalists
Liverpool at Anfield on Monday, but the Italian's belief has never wavered.
"I always believe and I still believe that we're going to stay up. It's not
going to be easy," he told Sky Sports News. "We need to keep fighting
because this has been a season where results have been strange. "You'd like
to win all the games 3-0 and when it doesn't happen you sometimes don't like
it. "I know they are trying very hard all the time and that is all that I'm
asking for."
West Ham's poor recent run led Zola to question his Upton Park future,
although he is pleased to be smiling again after collecting four points from
their last two outings.
"I try to smile all the time, but obviously when you get good results like
the one we've just had it changes your mood. "I'm glad. I'm looking forward
to results like that more often."

Ilan holds fire on future
Brazilian waiting until summer to decide future
Last updated: 14th April 2010
SSN

West Ham striker Ilan wants to help the club retain their top-flight status
before worrying about his long-term future. The 29-year-old Brazilian has
proved a shrewd capture for manager Gianfranco Zola with three league goals
in seven appearances. The former St Etienne striker has scored in both the
club's last two matches, including their leveller at Everton and crucial
winner against Sunderland. Ilan believes momentum is now on the Hammers'
side and he is keen to continue to aid the club's quest to avoid relegation.
Once West Ham are safe and have another season of Premier League football
under their belt then he will sit down and discuss new terms. "We've
produced a good performance at Everton and got a home victory," he told the
club's official website. "We've got some momentum, we're more together, more
confident about getting out of this situation "I will do everything I can to
help West Ham and then when the season is over we will sit down and talk
about the future."

Zola : my focus is on survival
The Sun

GIANFRANCO ZOLA and Steve Clarke insist West Ham's survival bid is all they
care about. The Hammers management duo are under increasing pressure after a
disappointing season at Upton Park. But both boss Zola and assistant manager
Clarke refuse to take any notice of speculation concerning their futures.
Zola, 43, said: "I am the manager of West Ham and my focus is to get them
safe — then we will see what happens. "We are confident of staying up. We
are improving and we are determined to keep fighting until the end. "We know
it's not going to be easy, but the determination and fight is there." The
Hammers are currently four points clear of the Premier League drop zone. And
like Zola, Clarke believes David Sullivan and David Gold will still own a
top-flight club next season. He said: "The best thing to do now is to get
the points we require. "We have to go to Liverpool on Monday and give a good
account of ourselves. "We focus on the next game, that is as far as we look
at this moment in time. "It would be silly for us to look any further ahead.
We look for the next game and we get the points we require to keep West Ham
in the Premier League."

Ferdinand brothers to line up in same team for the first time
Published 05:00 18/04/10 By Marc Isaacs
The Mirror

Rio Ferdinand is set to play alongside younger brother Anton for the first
time in his career when they make an emotional return to Upton Park. The
Ferdinand brothers both came through the academy ranks in East London, but
England captain Rio secured a big money move to Manchester United before
Anton made his first-team debut for West Ham in August 2003. Anton left the
Hammers for Sunderland last season, but both players have agreed to play
for West Ham in academy director Tony Carr's testimonial on May 5. The pair
will join Joe Cole, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick in a
star-studded line-up. Anton said: "It would be the first time me and Rio
have played together. That's something I'm sure the West Ham fans would love
to see and something my family would love too. "Tony deserves it with the
amount of stuff he's done for this club. The number of players who have come
through says it all. "If it wasn't for him, some of the best players who
have come through into the England team wouldn't be doing what they're
doing."

Upson: West Ham can pile more pressure on Benitez
Published 22:45 17/04/10 By Marc Isaacs
The Mirror

West Ham captain Matthew Upson believes his side can cause an upset at
Anfield and pile more pressure on Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez. Gianfranco
Zola's side have managed to hit form at just the right time, having gained a
valuable point against Everton and then beaten Sunderland. But the Hammers
have not won at Liverpool since September 1963 - and have scored just four
goals in 14 Premier League matches at Anfield. Despite that dismal record,
Upson said: "There is a great opportunity to go away to Liverpool and give a
good account of ourselves. We will go up there with the mentality of getting
something out of the game. "We have to think about extending the gap on the
bottom three and making it certain [that we stay up]. The win against
Sunderland has put us in a favourable position. But there is still work to
do."

West Ham are the latest club to join the race for Jamie O'Hara, according to
reports in Wednesday's papers. The Tottenham star, who is currently on loan
at relegated Portsmouth, is also thought to be on Wolves and Newcastle's
radar. The 23-year-old would cost around £5million.

Soccernet Preview: Liverpool v West Ham United
By Dominic Raynor
ESPN UK

Two weeks ago this fixture would have been a home banker. West Ham United
manager Gianfranco Zola looked like a dead-man walking as the Hammers
plunged towards relegation following a run of six consecutive defeats and
talismanic Liverpool striker Fernando Torres was fit and firing in the
goals.

How quickly things change. With injury-plagued Torres back on the sidelines
with a knee complaint, which also looks likely to rule him out of action on
Monday night, Liverpool could only manage a 0-0 draw with Fulham at Anfield
as their already slim hopes of claiming a fourth place finish in the Premier
League diminished further. Manager Rafael Benitez came under intense
scrutiny with Liverpool's Champions League qualification in the balance and
the Spaniard was linked with a summer switch to Juventus in both the Italian
and UK press, prompting his agent to go public about the speculation,
including the revelation that Benitez had been approached in January.

This was followed by the news that despite the "rewarding and exciting
experience" of owning Liverpool for the past three years, unpopular duo
Thomas Hicks and George Gillett had put the club up for sale and installed a
new chairman: British Airways chief Martin Broughton. Amidst all this
turmoil, and with a midweek Europa League semi-final against Atletico
Madrid, their focus on West Ham might have shifted.

Meanwhile, over at Upton Park, minds are concentrated. Following a short
time of reflection in Sardinia, dead-man walking Zola decided he still had
the stomach for the fight and stuck at his job with the Hammers. West Ham
subsequently earned an unexpected draw against in-form Everton at Goodison
Park and then secured a valuable 1-0 home win against Sunderland to give the
club a four point cushion above the drop zone. Brazilian forward Aruajo Ilan
finally came good, scoring the equaliser at Goodison and the winner at Upton
Park and will now be carrying the fight at Anfield.

Liverpool player in focus: David Ngog. He will once again lead the line with
Fernando Torres out injured and still has much to prove. The young
Frenchman, 21, has been thrust into the spotlight much early than expected
due to the striker shortage at Anfield and has struggled under the pressure,
scoring just four goals in 21 Premier League appearances this season.
Liverpool need an end of season flourish from the former PSG striker to keep
them in the Europa League qualifying places and it might also remind fans
why he was once tipped as one of France's hottest young talents.

West Ham player in focus: Aruajo Ilan He was nothing more than a bit-part
player for West Ham until he came off the bench to score that equaliser
against Everton. Handed a start in his next game, he scored the winner and
looked set to be the player that could lead the Hammers to safety. But then
he opened his mouth. "Zola has lost control of the team and it is impossible
for him to recover it," he said after his match-winning heroics. Under
normal circumstances he would be for the chop, but as the man of the moment
he will retain his place and is under real pressure to perform.

Key Battle: Sotirios Kyrgiakos v Carlton Cole - With Emiliano Insua out for
the season Kyrgiakos has been drafted into Liverpool's reconfigured defence
and the big Greek international should be perfectly suited to dealing with
the physical hold-up play of West Ham striker Cole. England international
Cole provides the focal point for the Hammers' attack and it was his flick
on that lead to Ilan's winner last time out. Burley centre-back Kyrgiakos
proved against Stoke that he is more than able to deal with an aerial threat
and if he can keep Cole quiet it will go a long way to frustrating Monday
night's visitors.

Tactics: Liverpool are likely to play David Ngog as a lone striker, with
skipper Steven Gerard in an advanced midfield role to provide support. £20
million summer-signing Alberto Aquilani will once again be asked to provide
the creativity in central midfield, with Ryan Babel and Maxi Rodriguez, or
Dirk Kuyt, providing support out wide. West Ham are likely to employ an "if
it ain't broke don't fix it" policy with a big man up top, Cole, a tricky
Brazilian in the support, Ilan, and Mark Noble once again stepping into the
boots of suspended midfielder Scott Parker to provide box to box cover.

Quotes: Rafael Benitez's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon on transfer news: "Juve
approached us back in January but we told them that the coach would not be
leaving Liverpool this season. I have not received any interest (recently)
from Juventus for Rafa Benitez."

Ilan backtracks on his comments: "I have spoken to Gianfranco Zola and there
is no problem. The important thing is we are together as a group. I will do
everything I can to help West Ham and then when the season is over we will
sit down and talk about the future."

In the news: It's difficult to narrow it down as far as Liverpool are
concerned; the club are up for sale and Juventus want to pilfer their
manager and half the playing staff. But the most pressing issue is that
Torres has returned to Spain for a second opinion on the knee-knack that
threatens to rule him out for the season. For West Ham, the headlines
continue to be dominated by speculation on Zola's future.

Liverpool team news: Torres is sidelined with a knee injury so Ngog wil
start up front. Defenders Emiliano Insua and Fabio Aurelio are both still
out so Daniel Agger is set to continue at left-back.

West Ham team news: Scott Parker is suspended for the second game of his
two-match ban. Louis Boa Morte played 45 minutes for the reserves on Tuesday
after eight months out with a knee injury but is not yet ready for a
first-team return.

Probable Liverpool team (4-4-1-1): Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Kyrgiakos,
Agger; Kuyt, Aquilani, Mascherano, Babel; Gerrard; Ngog.

Probable West Ham United team (4-4-2): Green; Faubert, Da Costa, Upson,
Spector; Stanislas, Noble, Kovac, Behrami; Ilan, Cole.

Soccernet prediction: Liverpool seem to be saving their best performances
for the Europa League, as two disappointing draws - 1-1 at Birmingham and
0-0 at home to Fulham - in their last Premier League outings attest. With
West Ham fighting for survival they could well take a point from their visit
to Anfield.

Wolvehampton Wanderers reserves v West Ham United reserves
Barclays Premier Reserve League South
New Bucks Head, AFC Telford United
Tuesday 13 April 2010
Kick-off: 7pm

Final score - Wolverhampton Wanderers reserves 4-1 West Ham United reserves

Don't forget to keep a close eye on WHUTV for exclusive post-match reaction
from tonight's game. While West Ham United may have lost, the young players
will have enjoyed the experience of taking on what was essentially a Premier
League side. For an hour, they competed brilliantly well. Earlier, Luis Boa
Morte had played for the first time in more than eight months, and will be
delighted to have come through 45 minutes following his long-term knee
injury.

92 mins - Into the final minute and Hennessey has a free-kick inside the
Wolves half. Well done to McNaughton as, in the final seconds, he shepherds
Mendez-Laing wide before sliding in and winning the ball from the
substitute. That is Wolves' final home game and, following the final
whistle, the PA man thanks the club for holding their reserve-team fixtures
here in Telford. Good man.

91 mins - We're going to have at least two more minutes... Good news
elsewhere, as Chelsea are 1-0 up against Bolton Wanderers in the Premier
League. Bolton are just a point above the Hammers in the table.

90 mins - West Ham are ending the game on the front foot, and good on them.
They have largely competed well against a vastly more-experienced home side.
They are going to lose, but they are going to lose with their heads held
high.

88 mins - The attendance is announced as 404. A few of them let out an
'Ooooh' as Montano flashes a shot across goal and wide from the edge of the
box.

87 mins - Halford has a Delap-esque long throw. He uses it to good effect to
hurl the ball into the six-yard box, only for Mendez-Laing to sit on the
ball instead of putting it into the net. It pops out and Kurucz claims it.
Moments later, Wolves attack again, but Milijas shoots straight at Kurucz
from 20 yards.

86 mins - Unlucky. McNaughton slams the ball over the Wolves defence for
Montano to chase, but it is just too strong and Hennessey nips in to clear
ahead of the striker.

85 mins - Mendez-Laing shows a clean pair of heels to Sanchez before
stabbing the ball across the goalmouth. It flies out to Halford, who feeds
Milijas, who curls the ball into the empty Frank Naughton Stand.

84 mins - You can still hear Alex Dyer barking out his orders from the
dugout on the far side of the pitch. With ten men and Wolves three goals to
the good, we could do with the final few minutes ticking by rather quickly,
really.

83 mins - West Ham's task is made harder as Brown is forced off with an
injury. He's not going to be able to continue and hobbles around the pitch
to the bench. Driver comes across to left-back, with Sanchez going to
right-back in a flat back-four.

81 mins - Dave Davis brings down Wearen after the Irish youngster had
intercepted his pass.

78 mins - I don't know what you would put the scoreline down to, really,
other than the fact that Wolves have obviously scored four goals. They
haven't outplayed West Ham at all, but simply taken their chances when they
have come along. Edgar tries to get one back, beating Dunleavy for pace
before crossing low, but Stearman is there to hack the ball clear ahead of
Montano.

76 mins - GOAL! Oh dear. Halford curls the ball into the box again and
Stearman is able to stab it over the line from close-range.

75 mins - Wearen is on, wearing the No16 shirt. The poor PA man is confused.
He announces the arrival of Barrett in place of Dixon.

73 mins - Guedioura is off, replaced by the fantastically-named Dave Davis.

72 mins - The scoreline is a bit cruel on West Ham, but it's important that
they don't feel sorry for themselves. The first hour of tonight's game was
superb. As I type, Milijas gets free inside the box and flashes a shot
narrowly wide of the far post.

70 mins - GOAL! Mendez-Laing is fouled about 30 yards out. Halford curls in
a free-kick that eludes everyone, Sanchez misses the ball and it bounces
past Kurucz and inside the far post.

69 mins - Guedioura is back on.

68 mins - Double-change from Wolves. John Dunleavy and Nat Mendez-Laing are
on for Castillo and Ebanks-Blake.

67 mins - The Wolves fans get a bit excited as McNaughton and Guedioura
clash, leaving the midfielder in a heap. The ball is knocked out of play by
a Wolves player before Payne knocks it back to the referee, but only manages
to hit Milijas on the head! I would suspect Guedioura will be fine to
continue in a few moments.

66 mins - Frustration from Driver there, who sees his run into the penalty
area stopped by a challenge. He then gets back and fouls Ward by the
touchline.

65 mins - GOAL! That's a real shame. Ward cuts inside from the left wing and
beats one player before rifling a low, right-foot shot past Kurucz and into
the bottom right-hand corner from about 22 yards. Good finish.

63 mins - The home fans are getting a bit frustrated, but they have
something to get excited about as Ebanks-Blake shoots low across the face of
goal. Goal kick.

61 mins - A second change for the Hammers sees Lee replaced by Nicky
Barrett. The PA operator says it's Eoin Wearen, but it isn't, I can assure
you of that. Well, not unless Wearen's hair has changed colour since he got
off the team coach.

60 mins - Stearman joins Edgar in the book after blocking off Dixon.
Driver's free-kick is long and finds Brown on the left flank. He gets to the
by-line and cuts the ball all the way to the far post, where Driver hits it
flush on the volley, only to see his effort blocked by Ward.

58 mins - Well done Sanchez, this time at the defensive end. The young
Spaniard does superbly well to twice block shots from Ebanks-Blake. Seconds
later, Milijas shoots from long-range and Kurucz clutches the ball to his
chest.

56 mins - Is it too early to start counting down the minutes? Only 34 to go
and West Ham are holding firm. They have been, arguably, the better side.
Wolves have had a few chances, but the Hammers have passed the ball easily
as well as their more-experienced hosts.

53 mins - Controversy! A long ball hits McNaughton on the arm. The assistant
referee flags for a Wolves free-kick, but instead the referee awards a West
Ham free-kick, judging that the defender had been pushed by Keogh.

52 mins - Milijas shows his cannon of a left foot, getting past his marker
before shooting from 25 yards. I reckon Kurucz would have saved it, but it
only just cleard the bar.

51 mins - Spence was injured making that clearance and has the physio on, so
we have a short break in play. When we restart, a cross bounces to Brown at
the far post. He shoots from 20 yards, but it's just too close to Hennessey,
who holds on at the second attempt.

49 min - Edgar has been on the pitch less than four minutes but he's now
been booked for bringing down Halford down the Wolves right. Milijas curls
the ball in and Spence clears to Dixon, who finds Payne. He tries a
difficult pass to release Montano, but it is intercepted.

47 mins - West Ham's team, without Boa Morte, are now giving up exactly
1,900 games of league experience to their opponents. Only Spence, Payne and
Kurucz have played senior football. They're doing well, though. Driver
drills a free-kick into the penalty area, where McNaughton volleys
goalwards, but Hennessey has time to dive on the loose ball.

46 mins - We're back underway... Wolves go on the attack, but Brown snuffs
it out and wins a throw.

West Ham make a half-time change, with Boa Morte being replaced by Anthony
Edgar.

Right, I've done a bit of maths. The Wolves team tonight have played a total
of 1,957 senior league matches and 104 full internationals.

Half-time score - Wolverhampton Wanderers reserves 1-1 West Ham United
reserves

46 mins - We're going to have at least one added minute. Guedioura brings
proceedings to a close by smashing a shot that is closer to the David
Hutchinson Stand sign on the roof than it is to the goal. And I reckon the
David Hutchinson Stand is at least 12 metres tall.

44 mins - Vokes misses another great chance to put Wolves back in front.
Milijas's pass is deflected over Spence and the Wales striker has all day to
pick his spot from 12 yards, only to lob the ball over the top.

42 mins - GOAL! Sergio Sanchez! Boa Morte's corner is cleared at the near
post. Driver lofts the ball back in and Sanchez heads it past Hennessey and
against the base of the right-hand post before stooping to head the rebound
in from about five yards.

41 mins - Boa dummies and steps over the ball. Payne strikes it and it hits
the ball and goes behind.

40 mins - Another set-piece chance for Boa Morte. Lee shoots and is
challenged by Stearman. The midfielder needs the physio on. Payne and Boa
have a chat as the latter places the ball on the turf about 23 yards from
goal in a central position.

38 mins - The free-kick is played to Dixon inside the penalty area. He lays
the ball wide right to Lee, whose cross is headed behind by Ward. Boa
Morte's corner is claimed high above his head by Hennessey.

37 mins - It's all West Ham at present. Montano slides an intelligent ball
through for Boa Morte. He tries to cut inside Stearman, but the England
Under-21 defender intercepts. A short time later, Boa is at it again,
winning a free-kick 40 yards from goal from Milijas.

36 mins - Callum Driver is really coming on leaps and bounds. The wing-back
gets forward and cuts inside. Lee makes a clever decoy run to open up the
space inside and Driver makes another five yards before shooting low and
narrowly wide of the post with his less-favoured left foot.

34 mins - I know the 'West Ham way' is to play out from the back, but that
is ridiculous. Kurucz and Spence both employ a drag-back to beat Keogh. The
crowd ooooh and aaaah, but West Ham clear through Driver.

32 mins - Dixon should score. Brown crosses to the near post where Dixon
loses Castillo, but can only head powerfully wide. He is left with his head
in his hands.

30 mins - Wolves break up the other end and Lee makes a good block to deny
Milijas on the edge of the penalty area. Wolves win a throw down the left
and Kurucz comes and doesn't get there, but thankfully the ball bounces
outside the penalty area and is cleared.

29 mins - West Ham's youngsters are growing in confidence. Montano runs at
Stearman before spreading play wide left to Brown. He cuts the ball back to
Payne, who takes a touch before testing Hennessey with a bouncing effort
from 25 yards. Good handling by the goalkeeper.

28 mins - That would have been a fairytale! Boa Morte completely mis-hits
his free-kick, but it goes UNDER the wall and about a yard wide of the near
post. Hennessey was just standing there watching... Montano is back on.

26 mins - Driver's curling through ball is touched on by Montano, who goes
down under a challenge from Castillo and is left clutching his face. West
Ham have a free-kick about three yards outside the penalty area. Boa Morte
stands over it, but first Montano is receiving some treatment.

24 mins - Well done Josh Payne. He wins a crunching tackle in midfield
before swapping passes with Montano and finding Dixon. The forward's pass is
blocked back into Payne's path, and he beats a player before seeing his shot
blocked by Stearman. Driver picks up the clearance, but his cross flies over
the crossbar.

22 mins - Big chance for Vokes, but his touch lets him down. He had sprung
the offside trap there and should really have controlled Guedioura's through
ball. If he had, he was in acres of space inside the penalty area. As it is,
the ball goes harmlessly behind for a goal kick.

20 mins - Jordan Brown does well down the left, cutting inside his marker
before trying to find Montano inside the penalty area. Unfortunately, the
Colombian-born forward is offside.

18 mins - I should say that Alex Dyer has again chosen to go with a 3-5-2
formation tonight, with Boa Morte forming part of the central-midfield
three.

17 mins - West Ham have settled down now and, aside from Vokes' early
strike, Kurucz has not been tested. The challenge will be to find a way past
the experienced Wolves defence.

15 mins - Boa is clearly in the mood to get back in the swing of things,
sliding in on Guedioura and challenging the rotund Ebanks-Blake in the
midfield.

13 mins - Boa Morte to the fore, finding Lee with a superb 40-yard pass. He
then collects the ball from Brown before skipping around a challenge and
going down on the edge of the D. He claps his hands together in frustration
as the referee waves away his appeal for a free-kick.

11 mins - Great chance for Guedioura as he latches on to Vokes' knock-down,
but he can only lob the ball wide with just Kurucz to beat.

10 mins - Comedy of errors there. Stearman flicks on Kurucz's goal kick to
Dixon, who knocks it past Stearman. Hennessey plunges on the ball, but it
squirms out from under his body. Unfortunately no West Ham player is able to
take advantage and the Wales goalkeeper is able to grab it. Seconds later,
Boa Morte wins a free-kick out on the left, but he gets up unscathed.

9 mins - Ebanks-Blake ploughs forward down the right and wins a corner.
Spence clears at the near post before Guedioura's pass goes out for a goal
kick.

7 mins - Spence is standing up well to the challenge so far, winning a
couple of commanding headers and making a pair of important interceptions.
West Ham break and win a throw. Driver's throw-in eludes Stearman and falls
to Montano, who tries to pick out Boa Morte with a low cross. Instead the
ball goes behind the Portuguese and Wolves clear. Better.

6 mins - Guedioura gets down the left and combines with Vokes, but his cross
is sliced behind for a goal kick.

5 mins - West Ham's youngsters need to re-group and find their feet. They've
played very well in recent weeks and just need to use that belief and stay
in the game early on. Guedioura fouls Driver as the wing-back jumps to head
clear.

4 mins - GOAL! That's not the ideal start. The corner is not cleared and
drops to Sam Vokes, who guides a right-foot volley into the roof of the net
from six yards.

3 mins - Boa still hasn't touched it yet, but he's jogging around happily
enough. Jordan Brown challenges Greg Halford and concedes a right-wing
corner.

1 min - We had a bit of 'Hi-ho Wolverhampton' before kick-off. A cracking
tune if you ask me. Callum Driver announces his arrival to Stephen Ward with
a crunching challenge. Good start young man.

7pm - Wolves will get us underway...

6.59pm - Here are the two teams. A very decent-sized crowd has turned out to
cheer on their respective teams. Boa Morte is sporting some nice white boots
for his return. He goes around and shakes hands with his young team-mates
one by one. He is a popular figure at Chadwell Heath, is the midfielder, and
it is great to see him back.

6.57pm - The locals reckon it is going to rain! It's clouded over a bit, so
maybe they are going to be proved correct. It is eight months and two weeks
since Luis Boa Morte suffered his knee injury in China, I am reliably
informed by Pete Walker, the team coach driver.

6.56pm - Goodness knows why, but they're playing the tune they play at
Stamford Bridge before kick-off...

6.55pm - Both sets of players have returned to their dressing rooms for
last-minute preparations. I can tell you that Alex Dyer's youngsters are
relishing the chance to test themselves against a Wolves team full of
seasoned professionals. A week after shackling James Beattie, Callum
McNaughton is itching to get to grips with Wales international Sam Vokes and
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, the top scorer in the Championship in each of the last
two seasons. Make no mistake, this will be a huge challenge for the mixture
of Academy youngsters and first-year professionals. Luis Boa Morte has been
through his own special warm up and will be expected to lead the side
through the game alongside captain Jordan Spence. It will also be a big
night for goalkeeper Peter Kurucz, but the whole squad were in relaxed and
confident mood before arriving here in Shropshire.

6.50pm - Hello! Sorry for the delay, but I've had a few technical issues
getting on to the internet here at the New Bucks Head. It's got a bit cold
over the last hour or so, and is likely to get even chillier when the sun
goes down. The home of AFC Telford is a neat, modern stadium is
seven-years-old and very smart, I must say. The stadium is equipped with a
hotel, brasserie and gymnasium. Not bad for a Blue Square North club!

Good evening from Shropshire.

Luis Boa Morte is set to make his eagerly-awaited return from injury in
tonight's Barclays Premier Reserve League South meeting with Wolverhampton
Wanderers at the New Bucks Head in Telford.

The Portugal midfielder is due to be back in competitive action for the
first time since a serious knee injury - including anterior cruciate
ligament damage - in the Barclays Asia Trophy meeting with Tottenham Hotspur
in Beijing, China, on 29 July last year.

Boa Morte could form part of a three-man midfield alongside Olly Lee and
Josh Payne. At the back, the only change from last week's goalless draw at
Stoke City sees Jordan Brown replace Davide Ferrari, whose loan spell from
Brescia Calcio has ended. Up front, Academy scholar Cristian Montano will
again partner Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Terry Dixon.

Wolves have named one of the strongest reserve sides I've ever seen, with
all eleven players having started in the Barclays Premier League this
season. Seven of the home team are full internationals, and six of them
started for Wolves in the Premier League meeting with West Ham at Molineux
on 15 August.

West Ham United reserves: Kurucz, Driver, Sanchez, Spence, McNaughton,
Brown, Lee (Barrett 61), Payne, Boa Morte (Edgar 46), Montano, Dixon (Wearen
75)
Subs: Cowler, Abdulla

Wolverhampton Wanderers reserves: Hennessey, Halford, Stearman, Castillo
(Dunleavy 68), Ward, Keogh, Guedioura (Davis 72), Milijas, Surman,
Ebanks-Blake (Mendez-Laing 68), Vokes
Subs: McCarey, Bennett

Ferdinands ready for Testimonial
WHUFC.com
Anton Ferdinand is looking forward to joining forces with big brother Rio
for the first time on 5 May
13.04.2010

Anton Ferdinand has never had the chance to line up alongside big brother
Rio in a claret and blue shirt - until now. The England defender, 31, left
West Ham United a little less than three years before his younger sibling
made his debut at Preston North End in August 2003. Anton, 25, followed his
brother up the A1 in the summer of 2008, when he joined Sunderland. On
Wednesday 5 May, the graduates hope to join forces in the All-Star team put
together by Academy Director Tony Carr for his eagerly-awaited Testimonial
match against a West Ham squad. "It would be the first time we'd have played
together in a match," said Anton. "That's something I'm sure the West Ham
fans would love to see and something that my family would love to see. "Our
manager [Steve Bruce] has OK'd it and hopefully I'll be able to play some
part in the game. Tony deserves it with the amount of stuff he's done for
this club. The number of players who have come through says it all. If it
wasn't for him, some of the best players who have come through into the
England team wouldn't be doing what they're doing. "If you're not
comfortable on the ball then you're not a West Ham player - it's as simple
as that. You have to have confidence on the ball and I try to show that
myself. "I grew up in the club and there are a lot of people here who have a
lot of love for me, and I have a lot of love for them. It was nice to be
back and see them last Saturday [when Sunderland lost 1-0 at the Boleyn
Ground]."
The brothers will be among a star-studded cast of players to pull on the
claret and blue shirt Carr has had specially-designed for the match.
Sponsored by Ricoh, the kits have been manufactured by Umbro and will be
auctioned off following the big night. Carr has received agreement in
principle for a host of international stars to take part, including Rio's
Manchester United team-mate Michael Carrick and Anton's Sunderland sidekick
Kieran Richardson. Chelsea trio Frank Lampard, John Terry and Joe Cole all
plan to be involved, alongside the likes of Nottingham Forest's Chris Cohen,
Coventry City's Freddy Eastwood and Derby County goalkeeper Stephen Bywater.
Tickets for the Testimonial start at £15 for adults and £10 for Over-65s and
Under-16s. Executive boxes are also available priced at £750 for ten people.

Ilan doing well
WHUFC.com
With two goals in two games, Ilan is settling in well into life in east
London
13.04.2010

Ilan has spoken about his happiness at his goalscoring form for West Ham
United and echoed the togetherness in the camp. The Brazilian forward struck
the crucial winning goal against Sunderland on Saturday to go with his late
equaliser the week before against Everton. Things are going well for him and
speaking at Chadwell Heath, the 29-year-old stressed he was fully committed
to the cause - contrary to certain reports suggesting otherwise. He said he
had only spoken positively about his life at West Ham since joining from AS
Saint-Etienne in February. "I was really shocked when someone in France
asked me about the quotes," he said. "I expected something like that - I'm a
foreign player here, I've scored a couple of goals, so it's a good moment to
come up with something and cause some mischief. "I have spoken to Gianfranco
Zola and there is no problem. He's a great person and really cool, you can
speak to him whenever you need to. I spoke to the players and they're fine -
they've seen this kind of thing before. We are really strong together as a
group. "The important thing right now is we are together as a group, we're
in the same boat and we're confident we'll get out of trouble. "The manager
is very open and you can talk to him about anything. There's no need to
explain his career but it is easy to speak to him because he knows straight
away what a player feels."

Ilan said the mood at the training ground was positive, with everyone
pulling in the same direction. "We really needed the win and to get the
goal, I was really happy," he said. "Of course, it was a very important
goal. "We needed the points and we had to give something back to the
supporters so it could not have come at a better moment. It's all I could
have asked for - to get a goal and a home win."

He is particularly happy to be playing alongside Carlton Cole, who has
himself paid tribute to Ilan's forward play. "He's the type of player who
complements me - he is big, he's strong, he does a fantastic job up front.
"I try to follow him, to pick up the second ball. At half-time he said to
me, 'Get behind me, I'll give you some knock-downs'. Five minutes later we
linked up for the goal, he won the header and I scored."

Having agreed a short-term contract with an option for a further season, it
remains to be seen what the future holds. Like all of his colleagues, the
only aim is to get survival assured and then think about the next steps.
"We've produced a good performance at Everton and got a home victory. We've
got some momentum, we're more together, more confident about getting out of
this situation. "I will do everything I can to help West Ham and then when
the season is over we will sit down and talk about the future.
"Frankly, I am really positive. We think we can get out of it. As I said the
way we have played has given us more belief and confidence and if we can get
a draw at Liverpool, that would be great and set us up for the last couple
of home games. We should aim for a point at least at Liverpool - I think
we're capable of getting that."

Lee aiming for big finish
WHUFC.com
Olly Lee is looking forward after recovering from a frustrating bout of
glandular fever
13.04.2010

Olly Lee is determined to finish 2009/10 a high after shaking off the
effects of the illness which threatened to ruin his whole season. A bout of
glandular fever laid the 18-year-old midfielder low before Christmas,
restricting his opportunities to shine after signing his first professional
contract last summer. Lee began the campaign well, starting two of the
Hammers' opening three Barclays Premier Reserve League South fixtures in
September, only to be sidelined for the next three months by the virus. The
youngster returned in January, being named among the substitutes for the FA
Cup third-round meeting with Arsenal, and has made a further eight
reserve-team appearances for Alex Dyer's side.
Speaking ahead of tonight's final away fixture at Wolverhampton Wanderers,
Lee is happy to be healthy and back among his team-mates at Chadwell Heath.
"It's been a tough season, to be honest. It's not gone how I wanted it to
go, but so far, so good. I've got a few games under my belt now and I'm
going from strength to strength now and I'll be looking to push on next
season. "This season has been a bit of a write-off, so I'm just looking to
make the most of the last few games and look ahead. "Glandular fever is not
nice. It keeps you in bed but it also knocks back your confidence and
morale. You know all your team-mates are out training and you are stuck at
home for six weeks. "In a way, it's worse than being injured because it's
got nothing to do with football. At least when you're injured, you're still
around the banter and around your mates, but with this I didn't see anyone."

The Academy graduate has been rewarded with a new contract, and is eager to
repay the club's faith in him by fulfilling his undoubted potential in
2010/11. "Considering the year that I've had when I haven't played many
games and haven't been training much, it's great that they have the faith in
me that maybe I can push on and become the next one in the first team. "It's
been brilliant that Alex has chucked me straight back into the reserve team,
too."
Lee has shown his versatility in recent weeks, lining up as a right
wing-back at Arsenal before resuming in his favoured central midfield
against Aston Villa and Stoke City. "I'll play wherever Alex wants me to,
but centre-mid is my position and obviously I want to be playing there most
of the time. I just want to be on the pitch, though, because it's better
than being sat at home ill! I'll play anywhere when called, but centre-mid
is where I want to be."
Wherever he has played, Lee has made up for lost time by producing
eye-catching performances, coming close to scoring his second goal of the
season at Stoke a week ago.
"We've hit a nice bit of form and been really good in recent matches. It's
all been based on working really hard and letting the quality come through
from there, so hopefully we can push on in the last two games and win them.
"I've had my break so I'll have a short holiday and get straight back and
ready for next season, ready to push on."

Kick-off at AFC Telford United's New Bucks Head stadium is at 7pm. Admission
is £4 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Keen looking to Thursday
WHUFC.com
The first-team coach is inviting Hammers fans along to a special charity
game on 15 April
13.04.2010

Check out WHUTV today to see Kevin Keen talking exclusively about a special
charity match being staged this Thursday.

The fixture will see Kevin Keen's All Star team take on a Wycombe Wanderers
Legends team at the Chairboys' Adams Park stadium. It is all being staged in
memory of Kevin's dad Mike, who did following a short illness in April 2009.
He was a popular figure in his hometown in Buckinghamshire, managing
Wanderers, running a sports shop for more than two decades and helping to
form the local youth football leagues.

As a player, he lifted the League Cup and Division Three championship trophy
as Queens Park Rangers in 1967, while also helping his son to forge a
successful career in the game.

"My Dad passed away on 11 April last year. He played quite a big role in my
footballing career, and he's also a big hero at Queens Park Rangers, as he
lifted the League Cup for them as captain in 1967 - the only major trophy
the club has won.

"All the money raised is going to Cancer Research. West Ham fans would be
interested to hear that Gianfranco has agreed to play, as has Steve, along
with Clive, Paul and Martin Allen - I don't know when the last time those
three kicked a ball together!

"Malky Mackay, who is now managing Watford and was here for a little while,
is playing, as is Teddy Sheringham, so it should be a good night. Any West
Ham fans would be more than welcome."

Tickets for the game, priced at £10 each, can be bought from Wycombe
Wanderers FC on 01494 441118 or online at www.wwfc.com

I'm no Denis Law
KUMB.com

Carlos Tevez has referred to the possibility of one of his goals condemning
West Ham to relegation as 'unthinkable'. Former Hammer Tevez - who was part
of the team that achieved the 'Great Escape' to avoid relegation in 2006/07
- returns to the Boleyn Ground on the final day of the Premier League season
when his current side, Manchester City visit London. It is a game that the
Citizens may have to win in order to guarantee a Champions League spot - and
also one that West Ham may need to win in order to avoid relegation. But
should it come to that, Tevez insists that his will not be the goal to send
United into the Championship. "It is unthinkable that I will score a goal
that will send West Ham to relegation," he told the Daily Mail. "To score
such a goal against them would change my history with them. "Their
supporters feel football; they are passionate, these people invested great
support in me. When the game comes, I hope City have already secured fourth
place and West Ham are safe. That is the best I hope for."
Tevez, who has scored 22 league goals in 28 starts for City this season -
also revealed during the interview that he would love to return to the
Boleyn one day as a player. "I wish to play for West Ham again before I
finish my career," he admitted. "I have some unfinished business there."

* Denis Law is famously credited as being the player who condemned former
club Manchester United to relegation in 1974 after he switched sides to join
Man City (although had he not scored the only goal in City's 1-0 win United
would still have been relegated).

Green: I'm not simply the best
The Sun
Published: 13 Apr 2010

ROB GREEN may be Fabio Capello's first choice but the West Ham keeper claims
he will never call himself England's No1. Green looks set to start in goal
when the Three Lions kick off their World Cup campaign against the USA on
June 12. But the Hammers ace insists he will never take his position for
granted — especially with the likes of David James and Joe Hart breathing
down his neck. Green, 30, said: "I'd never say I was England's No1, not
until there wasn't a goalkeeper left wearing gloves and an England shirt
anywhere in the world. "It's strange, although it sounds great on a personal
level. "But I take it with a pinch of salt because whoever isn't in goal for
England is usually the man people want."
If Green does go to South Africa as Capello's preferred goalie, it will cap
a remarkable change of fortunes for the man who once joked he was only
England's No6. He added: "It was an ongoing joke with the West Ham fans and
the manufacturers of my gloves thought it would be funny to put No6 on the
wristband of my gloves. "I wasn't worried that I wouldn't get picked because
of it. After all, they weren't picking me anyway! It was all in jest and if
you don't laugh, you'll cry."

Tevez: I still love Hammers
The Sun
Published: 13 Apr 2010

CARLOS TEVEZ admits it will break his heart if his goals send West Ham down.
Tevez returns to Upton Park on May 9 when Manchester City wrap up their
Premier League season. Depending on how results go between now and then,
City may need a win to secure a champions League place while West Ham could
be desperate for three points to avoid the drop. Tevez, 26, saved the
Hammers from relegation in 2007 during a season-long loan. And while the
Argentine's heart is now firmly with City, he would hate to see his old club
condemned to life in the Championship. Tevez said: "It is unthinkable that I
will score a goal that will send West Ham to relegation. "Their supporters
feel football — they are passionate, these people invested great support in
me. "I wish to play again for West Ham before I finish my career. I have
some unfinished business there.
"To score such a goal against them would change my history with the club.
"When the game comes, I hope City have already secured fourth place and West
Ham are safe. That is the best I hope for."

Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez hopes to play for West Ham United again
Striker has special bond with the club and fans...
By Alex Dimond
13 Apr 2010 17:56:00
Goal.com

Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez says he hopes to one day play for West
Ham United again. The Argentine international enjoyed a controversial stay
at Upton Park during the 2006/07 season, with the signing of him and Javier
Mascherano getting the Hammers into trouble with the FA over third-party
ownership — although his winning goal on the last day against Manchester
United did keep the Hammers up at the expense of outraged Sheffield United.
Now enjoying life at Eastlands after two seasons at Old Trafford, Tevez has
admitted he still has a soft spot for his former club and, with the two
sides set to face each other on the last day of the season, doesn't want to
be put in a position to harm them as they face another battle with the drop.
"It is unthinkable that I will score a goal that will send West Ham to
relegation," Tevez told the Daily Mail. "Their supporters feel football;
they are passionate, these people invested great support in me." I wish to
play again for West Ham before I finish my career," he continued. "I have
some unfinished business there. To score such a goal against them would
change my history with them. "When the game comes, I hope City have already
secured fourth place and West Ham are safe. That is the best I hope for."

City are currently four points clear in the race for Champions League
qualification, although challengers Tottenham Hotspur have a game in hand.
At the other end of the table, the Hammers are currently four points above
the relegation zone in 16th.

Carlton Cole has urged Fabio Capello to recognise his all-round game and be

The West Ham striker has scored twice, in 13 appearances since returning
from a serious knee injury, but made the goal, for Ilan, on Saturday as West
Ham beat Sunderland 1-0. Capello is tracking Bobby Zamora and Darren Bent,
who will compete with Emile Heskey and Cole for a place on the plane to
South Africa. Sport on television Cole said: "I took a lot of pleasure out
of setting up the goal against Sunderland; that's what I was known for. That
was my main thing. "Then I started scoring goals and everyone was labelling
me as a goalscorer. I don't see myself as either really, I see myself as
just playing the game and trying to help the team. I've always been a team
player and I am just so happy that I contributed on Saturday and at Everton,
to a good team performance. "I've got to start again from base because I had
a bad injury, came back, tried hard, it wasn't working out, so I have just
got to graft and get my fitness back to where it is supposed to be. "The
injury came at a bad time. I took two months out, I had to reset my button
and now I can start blossoming and start concentrating on my goals."

Fan thanks 'fantastic' club

Big Hammers fan Jon Aldridge was the recipient of a special gift for his
18th birthday recently - all thanks to his brother, KUMB.com member Steve.
Jon was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a relatively rare type
of blood cancer. With him having spent the last few months undergoing
chemotherapy, Steve decided to give his brother a lift by trying to arrange
for a signed shirt containing the signatures of the current Hammers squad to
be put together. Steve contacted KUMB.com with regards to making his wish a
reality and having been passed on to the relevant department at West Ham
United was rewarded with a brand new shirt, free of charge, containing the
signatures of the vast majority of the first team squad. This was thanks to
a particular diligent staff member who took time out of their own busy
schedule to visit the Chadwell Heath training ground, grab the necessary
signatures and post the completed item to Steve - an act of kindness that
Steve is most grateful for. "The club have been truly fantastic," he said.
"They have my eternal gratitude. The people I have been speaking with have
been fantastic. "My little brother was made up. I received the shirt on the
Friday and was able to give it to Jon on the same day at our family dinner.
He was so made up and I think it gave him a massive boost and made his
birthday."
KUMB's best wishes go to Jon and all the Aldridge family for his continuing
fight against the disease.

Carlton Cole hopes all-round game will put him in pole position for World
Cup
Published 22:45 12/04/10 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Carlton Cole has spiced up the race for a place among Fabio Capello's World
Cup strikers by insisting there is more to his game than just goals.
Sunderland's Darren Bent has hit 23 goals this season while Bobby Zamora has
had an outstanding campaign with 19, including six en route to the Europe
League semi-finals. While Wayne Rooney is certain to go to the World Cup,
and Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch are expected to join him, doubts remain
as to the identities of the other front men also set to board the plane.
Match of the Day pundit Martin Keown insisted on Saturday night that Bent's
23 goals this season stand him in better stead that Cole, with his nine
goals and two assists. But Cole believes the selfless work he does outside
the box will aid his cause come the end of the season. The West Ham striker,
who set up Ilan's winner against Sunderland on Saturday, said: "I took a lot
of pleasure out of setting up that goal. That's what I was known for. That
was my main thing. "Then I started scoring goals and everyone was labelling
me as a goalscorer. I don't see myself as either really, I see myself as
just playing the game and trying to help the team. "I've always been a team
player and I am just so happy that I contributed on Saturday, and at
Everton, to a good team performance."The goals will come but the situation I
am in right now, I know goals would help the team, but first and foremost
you've got to work hard to get your goals."
Cole's fine mid-season form, in which he scored against Manchester City,
Arsenal and Sunderland, has been hampered by a persistent knee injury. He
has now gone eight Premier League games without a goal for Gianfranco Zola's
struggling side. He added: "I've got to start again from base because I had
a bad injury, came back and tried hard, but it wasn't working out. So I have
just got to graft and get my fitness back to where it is supposed to be.
"I've got to start again. The injury came at a bad time. You have to re-set.
I took two months out, I had to re-set my button and now I can start
blossoming and start concentrating on my goals. "But first and foremost the
team needs to stay up. There's more to my football right now than goals
because I need to help the team progress."

West Ham join race for Beckford

West Ham are the latest club to join the race for Jermaine Beckford,
according to reports circulating on Monday morning. The 26-year-old striker
will be a free agent this summer when his Leeds contract expires, and is
drawing the attention of a host of clubs after his impressive strike rate
this season - including the winner in an FA Cup tie at Manchester United.
West Ham have joined the race to sign Jermaine Beckford from Leeds and hope
to sign the 26-year-old striker on a free transfer when his contract expires
in the summer.

Warriors for the working-day, as Anfield Awaits!
West Ham Till I Die
'We are but warriors for the working-day; Our gayness and our gilt are all
besmirch'd with the rainy marching in the painful field; But by the mass,
our hearts are in the trim'

(Henry V, Act VI, Scene III)

'Battle and grind' will be the order of the day for the remaining 4 matches
of this campaign. On Thursday, I called for warriors, and true Hammers, to
take to the field against Sunderland and that is exactly what we got! It
was a day for passion, hard work and steady nerves and our team delivered.
Perhaps the best commentary on the match was supplied by a Sunderland fans
website, who concluded: 'the Hammers wanted it more than us.' Honest, fair
and also very true.

The side carried over the positive spirit, from the pivotal Everton result,
into this crucial fixture. It was not pretty, but who cares, we have the
three points and that is all that matters. Indeed, that is what is likely
to save us this season, organisation, graft and commitment. We must
continue to be 'a band of brothers' that battles for every single ball and
grinds out the results that will see us safe come 5pm on 9 May 2010.

Noble and Behrami combined brilliantly to inject leadership, grit and work
rate into a midfield devoid of Scott Parker. And Ilan continues to be a
player making a real difference. Personally, I do not give a damn if he is
ineffective outside the penalty box, as long as he continues to be razor
sharp in it! Both of the goals against Everton and Sunderland showed a true
goal poachers instinct. It is that instinct that we have been lacking for
much of this season. Now we have it, lets keep it in the team for goodness
sake!

However, as Zola has wisely cautioned, we are not safe yet. We need to keep
the momentum going. Next up we face our own annual 'Agincourt' at Anfield.
But we should not write off the points prematurely, in advance of battle.
Now would be the perfect time for us to lay to rest our 47 year hoodoo at
Anfield. At the very least, we should aspire to take a point against a
badly ailing Liverpool side, who are not the force that they once were.

Fulham showed us the way to do it yesterday, with their hard fought draw.
We need to emulate Hodgson's tactics and play with two disciplined, hard
working, banks of four and two strikers up front. People often call for
4-5-1 on these occasions, as a kind of negative reflex action, but that is
not necessarily the best formation. It's proponents ignore the fact that
playing just one up neutralises your own attacking threat and gives the
opposition greater confidence and scope to push forward. While, in
contrast, playing two up front makes the opposition far more mindful of your
attacking threat and they have to deploy defenders to try to counter it.

Liverpool are heavily dependent upon the class of Torres and Gerrard.
Torres missed the Fulham match with a knee injury and, hopefully, that will
also keep him out of our match. If we have the right attitude and approach
we can potentially replicate last season's draw up there. However, Daprela
should replace Jon Spector at left-back (If Illunga remains unavailable).
The thought of Babel running at Spector is the stuff of footballing
nightmares! Daprela may be young and relatively inexperienced, but (as
predicted) his time has now arrived to shine!

At the very worst, I expect a organised and battling Hammers team to go down
to a narrow defeat. No 4-0 scoreline! It's vital that we preserve both our
vastly superior goal difference and our new found confidence and self-belief
as a team!

We must continue to be warriors for the working-day, right until the end of
the season! Nothing raises the spirits like a bit of Henry Five! However,
the reference is not just literary! Shakespeare's classic history play is a
tale of conviction, misfortune, doubt, inspiring leadership and ultimate
redemption in the face of overwhelming odds. And one hopes that is the
course to which West Ham's troubled season will also ultimately conform!

Oh well, once more unto the Anfield breach, dear friends!

SJ. Chandos.

West Ham United lead chase for Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford -
report
12 Apr 2010 21:31:00
Goal.com

West Ham United have joined the race to sign Leeds United striker Jermaine
Beckford this summer, according to reports on caughtoffside.com. Hammers
boss Gianfranco Zola believes he can persuade the 26-year-old to join the
club on a free transfer even if Leeds win promotion to the Championship this
season. The likes of Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa have all
expressed an interest in the striker but West Ham seem to be in pole
position, as they look to add more attacking options to their squad.
Although not always a favourite with the Elland Road faithful, Beckford has
netted an impressive 81 goals in the past three seasons. Leeds boss Simon
Grayson will not be happy to lose the hit-man but it looks increasingly
likely he will be leaving the West Yorkshire club in the summer.

Hammers boss rounds on his critics
5:07pm Monday 12th April 2010
Guardian Series

WEST HAM boss Gianfranco Zola has told his detractors to judge him at the
end of the season as he defended his management style. After being branded
'too nice' by Hammers chairman David Sullivan last month, Zola has even
questioned his own ability, retiring home to Sardinia to collect his
thoughts just two weeks ago after the team had suffered their sixth
successive league defeat. However, a draw at Everton last week and a first
league win in eight games against Sunderland on Saturday has lifted the
Italian's spirits. And he was not about to be criticised for his approach to
management. "I am the way I am and I'm not going to change it just because
of the job that I do," said Zola. "That doesn't mean that I can't do a good
job. I've done it last year and I'm trying to do it this year as well. "The
point is you have to motivate and get the best out of your players. Some
people do it in one way, others decide to go another way and it's a simple
as that. They have to judge me at the end of the season when I finish my
job."
Zola also rounded on critics who claimed he was too soft on his players. "My
players, when they do something that is not good, they get told off. Don't
worry about that, they get told off," he added. "Maybe they don't get told
off in a way people would like to see, but I've got my way and I stick to
it, but they get the point straight away, don't worry about that."
West Ham are now four points above the relegation zone, with a tricky trip
to Liverpool coming up next Monday.

Brazilian striker earns praise after Sunderland goal
1:44pm Monday 12th April 2010
Guardian Series

WEST HAM boss Gianfranco Zola paid tribute to Ilan after the striker earned
the team another precious three points in their bid to beat the drop at the
weekend. The Brazilian struck early in the second half against Sunderland,
stabbing home a Carlton Cole knock-down to take his tally to two in as many
weeks. His late diving header had rescued a point for the Hammers at
Goodison Park the previous week. His contribution then earned him a place in
the starting XI and, despite an inconspicuous first half performance, the
forward came to life when it mattered. It was to prove the only goal of the
game, and Zola was quick to applaud the player who signed as a free agent on
a six-month contract in January, comparing him to a more prolific version of
David Di Michele, who impressed for the Irons last season. "He has done very
well and he scored a very important goal last week," said the Italian. "He's
made his way through to the team and that goal he scored today was
unbelievable. He's becoming very effective for us and is making a big
difference for us. "He's a player that has got certain qualities and can do
the job that last year (David) Di Michele did for us. He's very similar to
him, maybe he's more effective at scoring goals than Di Michele was. "I
don't think we've seen the best of him because he's still adapting to this
football. I think he can do even better than that. His understanding with
Carlton Cole was good. The goal came from a combination from the two which
was something they had been trying to do all game."

Daily WHUFC News - 12th April 2010

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
The manager paid tribute to his backroom staff as he reflected on a deserved first win in seven matches
12.04.2010

Gianfranco Zola was keen to single out the efforts of his backroom staff as he reflected on a rapid reversal of fortune in the past week. A 2-2 draw at Everton and a 1-0 home win against Sunderland that lifted the club four points clear of the drop zone was not achieved without considerable effort, most obviously of course from the players with strong support from the fans. Zola though emphasised the efforts made by his coaches to hovercome a miserable March. "The inspiration came from my staff," he said. "We got together and we analysed the situation and we found a new way to get the points and results. That has been a good thing. Me, Steve, Kevin Keen, Kevin Hitchcock and Antonio Pintus have been together and we have found a new way. "Last year we found a way of playing nice football and getting results. This year, we are working more as a team more defensively to get the points. The secret is that we have stuck together with them and worked hard. "The team as a whole has found new belief and they know we can do better working together as a group. We have changed the way we do things and have looked hard at how we organise as a team. It is producing good results and credit must go to my staff. "The crazy thing about football is the situation can change quite rapidly. I don't think that many people were giving us any chance of getting a point at Everton and now after these two matches we are in a much better position. That is football. We never lost faith in ourselves, though. "I must say the support that I have had has been fantastic. It was good to go away, clear the mind and come back with more motivation and strength. It is paying off. I know we can keep that going against Liverpool and Wigan."
Zola also reiterated that he has not given his players an easy ride in recent weeks, getting tough when he has to is not something he finds difficult. "When my players do something that is not good, they get told off. Don't worry about that. When they do something wrong they get the point straight away. "The job is not done yet but we have taken a major step forward. The fan support has played a big part as we knew it would and we need more of the same until the end of the season. "The whole team has shown plenty of commitment. We have been defending from the front and when you have everyone pulling together, it gives you a real chance of getting a positive result. We have improved our position from two weeks ago but we still need to maintain the same focus and keep working hard. It is the only way to get the job done."

Cole's sound advice
WHUFC.com
Carlton Cole has revealed that a half-time talk with Ilan led to the Brazilian's winner against Sunderland
12.04.2010

Carlton Cole has revealed that a half-time chat with Ilan led to the Brazilian's match-winner in Saturday's 1-0 Barclays Premier League win over Sunderland. The 29-year-old netted his second goal in two games by stabbing the England striker's knock-down past Craig Gordon six minutes after the break. Cole told WHUTV how he instructed the South American to get close to him whenever a high ball was sent his way - and was rewarded almost immediately when Manuel da Costa launched a long free-kick into the Black Cats' penalty area. "At half-time I just gave Ilan some advice to play off my shoulder because, if the ball is played up to me in the air, anything can happen," said the 26-year-old. "I told him I could just knock it down and, it he was in the right place at the right time, he could notch a goal. He did it straight away. The first one that came in, he got right on to it and scored. "I'm so happy for him. I was giving him some banter, saying he's our 'Saviour' because he's done some really good work. He's scored three goals now and I'm happy that he's done that. He's scored some important goals and I'm over the moon for him. "I don't normally give him advice because he's an established player, but in that game, I thought he might get a bit more luck by playing off my shoulder and getting on to one of my flick-ons, and it happened. "Obviously his English is not the best, but he does understand. He's a very smart guy and an intelligent footballer, so that's what happens when you get a good combination like that."
While understandably pleased to help stretch the gap between West Ham and the relegation zone to four points, Cole was also delighted to get one over former team-mate and close pal Anton Ferdinand. "I'm happy that we won the game. Anton is a good friend of mine and there was always going to be a bit of banter before the game. I'm bantering him now because we won the game and I won the battle against him. He can sing better than me, but I did better on the day!"
With his personal battle with Ferdinand behind him and his partnership with Ilan growing with every game, Cole is targeting another positive result when the Hammers head for Liverpool a week on Monday. "We did all right and I think we can start building on this now. We had a good result against Everton last week and on Saturday we had an even better result at home. I think we can build on this and get more points on the table with more wins. "Hopefully [we can beat Liverpool]. We look like we can get a result out of any team at the moment, because we are playing some good football. The Everton game was a prime example - they were a very hard unit to break down. "Obviously Liverpool are a good side as well, but hopefully we can go back up to Merseyside and get another result, whether it be a draw or even more. You never know in this game. We know what we're setting out to do and what points we need, and that's what we're going to try to achieve."

Ex-Hammer earns day in the sun

Former Hammer Hayden Mullins will finally realise his dream of playing in an FA Cup final after his current side Portsmouth won through this afternoon. Mullins - who was on West Ham's books between October 2003 and January 2009 - was part of the Pompey team that upset the odds to beat Tottenham 2-0 at Wembley today and secure a place in the FA Cup Final where they will play Chelsea, who beat Aston Villa yesterday in the other semi final. The result was especially sweet for the Reading-born midfielder due to him being forced to sit out West Ham United's FA Cup Final against Liverpool in 2006 through suspension, after he was sent off in the (league) game, also against Liverpool, just prior to the final. Mullins received his marching orders eight minutes from the end of the game for pushing away then-Liverpool player Luis Garcia, who had kicked and pushed the United midfielder immediately prior to the incident; Mullins left the field in tears that night as the realisation that his Cup Final dream was over sank in. A plea for common sense to the FA made no difference and Mullins' three-match ban stood ensuring he missed the final, in which West Ham drew 3-3 with Liverpool. The former Crystal Palace player, who had been Alan Pardew's first signing as manager was sold to Portsmouth 14 months ago in order to ease West Ham United's financial crisis. Now 31, Mullins will finally get the opportunity he thought had evaded him four years ago. Today's game was won by two goals in extra time after the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes. Frederic Piquionne put Portsmouth - who were relegated yesterday as a result of West Ham's win over Sunderland - ahead in the first half of extra time before Aruna Dindane sealed the south coast club's second FA Cup Final appearance in three years from the penalty spot.

Cole - Holiday worked wonders
Hammers striker backs his boss' decision
Last updated: 12th April 2010

Carlton Cole believes West Ham's mini-renaissance owes a lot to Gianfranco Zola's controversial decision to hand his players a holiday in the midst of a relegation battle. When the Hammers recently fell to their sixth straight league defeat at home to Stoke the under-fire boss decided rest and recuperation rather than extra training was needed. The Italian returned to his native Sardinia to consider his future but returned convinced he is the right man to lead West Ham to safety. Upon returning from their three-day break West Ham have since produced two performances packed with character and Cole is convinced they have turned the corner. Zola's men came from behind twice to claim a vital point at Goodison Park and backed that result up on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Sunderland. Cole said: "The break was good. Sometimes you need a little break to get out from the turbulence. "We had a lot of stuff thrown at us which is sometimes unfair but sometimes you need criticism to progress. "We just needed to get out of the mess we were in and we've done all right in the last two games. "We were very resilient against Sunderland and the whole team performance was quality. "I've got a lot of praise for the team the way they did their shift and I'm proud of us. I think we are on the route to doing what we set out to do."
Cole barely got a holiday as he worked with the physios on the knee injury that has plagued him this season but the squad enjoyed a team-building night out. Full-back Jonathan Spector has echoed the England man's words, claiming it was a valuable exercise. "We may have had some criticism for it but I think the results we've had since then prove it was the right decision," said Spector. "The manager put his trust in us and I think we paid him back. I think we all needed to get away and clear our heads, come back and start afresh."

Ilan - Zola has lost control
Brazilian reveals problems at Upton Park
Last updated: 11th April 2010

Brazilian striker Ilan claims that Gianfranco Zola has 'lost control' of West Ham. In an astonishing revelation, Ilan - who has scored two in their last two games - claims that Zola is no longer in control and will not be able to win the players back. Ilan, who arrived on a short-term deal from St Etienne in January, also revealed he was not planning on staying at Upton Park beyond the end of the season. "I don't want to say bad things about Zola because he is a good person, but you know sometimes a good person working in football doesn't work," Ilan told the News of the World. "If you give your players a lot of freedom, they will not obey you anymore. "That is what is happening now at West Ham, especially with players who speak Italian. "Zola has lost control of the team and it is impossible for him to recover it." Ilan is not happy with how he is used by Zola. "Zola never uses me in my position as a centre forward," he said. "He puts me out on the flanks or even as a second forward. "He and the other coaches in the Premier League have an obsession with putting the players in positions different to the one they are used to."
He also confirmed that he was set to leave England when his deal at West Ham expires. "Whatever happens, I'm going to leave England. I have received offers from France and Spain and even from three clubs from Brazil," he continued. "If I get a good offer, like from a Brazilian team that wants to win the Copa Libertadores, then of course money will not be the only factor that matters. "I am 29 years old and still think that I can achieve a lot in football."

Gianfranco Zola's troops adapt well to direct attack
West Ham 1 Sunderland 0
Gary Jacob
The Times

Like a colonel trapped in the carnage of a civil war, Gianfranco Zola has kept one eye on his troops and the other watching his back. But West Ham United's aerial assault on Saturday suggested for the first time that Zola's men will live to fight again in the top flight next season. David Sullivan, the West Ham joint-chairman, shot himself in the foot once too often with his sniping at his team and some fans at Upton Park have turned their ammunition on him. Amid the crossfire, Zola has stood with dignity and a degree of humour. The Italian contemplated surrender two weeks ago, but returned from a break in Sardinia with new tactics to prevent his players competing as individuals and to deliver victory at all costs. The long ball was less pleasing to the eye — "that was all West Ham had, " Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, said — but it has been a means to an end.
"Last season we played nice football to get results, but now we needed to work more defensively," Zola said. "We need to keep on top of the momentum."

Ilan's late equalising header away to Everton last weekend stopped the rot of six consecutive defeats and his toe-poke, from Carlton Cole's knockdown on Saturday has injected some belief. Plenty of work remains to build confidence. West Ham scrapped for, but could not retain, possession and chances were at a premium as Sunderland hounded and harried without capitalising on early anxiety. Darren Bent lost his footing when through and Bruce was unhappy with Mike Jones, the referee, for stopping a free kick being taken in stoppage time as West Ham celebrated a disallowed goal. Bruce warmly embraced Zola at the end and, perhaps, spoke of dealing with his joint-chairman after his spell under Sullivan at Birmingham City ended in acrimony. "I wish Gianfranco the best but I am not going to get drawn on that [boardroom talk]," Bruce said. "Unless you have done it and got the T-shirt, it's very difficult. He's handled himself with great respect."

Relief at Upton Park, but recriminations and casualties are likely come the summer.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola was delighted to see his side earn a Barclays Premier League lifeline with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at Upton Park. But with a trip to Liverpool next weekend followed by a home clash with fellow strugglers Wigan, the Italian has warned there is hard work still to come. The Hammers' first win in eight games, secured by a second-half goal from Brazilian striker Ilan, edged them four points above the relegation zone. Yet Zola knows there is plenty to play for. "We are very happy for this - it was such a tough game for us. I am pleased because the players gave everything," said Zola. "I am absolutely delighted for the boys because I know what they have been through all this time. The result we got last week (2-2 draw at Everton) gave everybody a big boost. This is much better but it is still too early to celebrate. We are not there yet.'' One more win would move West Ham onto 34 points and Zola believes that could be enough to secure top-flight survival - but he will not count on it. "It might be enough but we will try to get more. This is not a championship where you can say it is over. Nobody was expecting Burnley to beat Hull City," said Zola. "We will stay on our toes." Ilan is fast emerging as West Ham's unlikely saviour, having followed up his equaliser against Everton last weekend with a vital strike here. The 29-year-old, who was making only his second start for the club, latched onto Carlton Cole's downward header to earn West Ham a vital three points. "Ilan has done very well," said Zola. "Last week he came on and he scored a very important goal for us and he has made his way through to the team. That goal he scored here was unbelievable. "I am delighted. He is becoming very effective for us. He is making a big difference but I don't think we have seen the best of him because he is still adapting his football. But the understanding he has with Carlton Cole is good."

Bruce hits out at 'shocking' ref after Sunderland denied late leveller
Published 23:00 11/04/10 By Darren Lewis
The Mirror

Steve Bruce blasted 'beach ball' ref Mike Jones for denying Sunderland a late chance of an equaliser. After West Ham sub Guillermo Franco's goal was disallowed in second-half stoppage time, Sunderland wanted to restart the game immediately in a bid to catch Hammers on the break. Jones, however, stood over the ball and refused to allow play to continue because Franco was still celebrating with most of the Hammers players. Bruce, who has not won a League game in London for three years, was incensed. He said afterwards: "We can all play badly but he had a shocker. Premier League referees have a difficult job but not to allow us to take the free-kick with two minutes to go was unbelievable. I've seen a player doing that but the referee...? "I asked him why and he said it would have been unsporting. Surely it's unsporting of him not to allow us to take it. I've never seen that in the rules. "And they must have been celebrating for three minutes but he added only 30 seconds on." Earlier this season Jones was punished after failing to disallow Darren Bent's beach-ball winner against Liverpool.

Ilan sinks Sunderland to show West Ham the way out via South America
David Lacey at Upton Park The Guardian, Monday 12 April 2010

Once more South America could be West Ham United's salvation. For Carlos Tevez of Argentina read Ilan Araujo Dall'Igna, a Brazilian with an Italian passport. Tevez's goals kept West Ham United in the Premier League three seasons ago. Now Ilan's scoring habits could do the same.

Having come off the bench to secure a point for Gianfranco Zola's team at Everton with a hurtling header six days earlier, Ilan brought West Ham their first win in eight games on Saturday when he reacted faster than Sunderland's defenders as Carlton Cole nodded on a free-kick from Manuel Da Costa and prodded the ball past Craig Gordon.

The victory has left West Ham four points above the bottom three with a favourable goal difference. A win against Wigan in their next home match could make them all but safe. "Thirty-four points might be enough but we will try to get more," Zola said. "This is not a championship where you can say it is over."

Compared to Tevez, Ilan is less controversial and considerably less expensive. West Ham were fined £5.5m for breaking Premier League rules over signing Tevez and some felt they should have been deducted points. Ilan came to Upton Park in January on a free transfer from St Etienne and a six-month contract.

Zola's decision to start Saturday's match with the 29-year-old Brazilian partnering Cole up front owed something to Mido's virus, but Ilan's performance during his 12 minutes on the pitch at Goodison had much to do with it. "He is becoming very effective for us and is making a big difference," the West Ham manager said.

Ilan's winner six minutes into the second half redeemed a match which was boring itself to death amid a confusion of misplaced passes and half-formed ideas. Teams struggling in April are seldom a pretty sight and without the suspended Scott Parker West Ham lacked the means to find a way through Sunderland's packed midfield and get at their back four.

Mark Noble was imaginative and Valon Behrami industrious but until Ilan scored the only threat to Sunderland came from some uncharacteristic fumbles by Gordon.

During half-time Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, reminded his players that the biggest danger lay in "a Carlton Cole flick-on and somebody running through". Talk about self-fulfilling prophesies. "It was a bad goal to give away," said Bruce, "a horrible goal."

Panicky defending by West Ham kept Upton Park biting its nails until well into stoppage time, at which point Guillermo Franco, who had replaced Junior Stanislas, had the place in an uproar of relief when he deftly brought the ball down before finding the net.

Such deftness, however, included a forearm but most of the West Ham team went on celebrating, unaware that the goal had been disallowed. Sunderland thought Mike Jones should have restarted the game anyway but according to Bruce "the ref ruled it would be unsporting".

Something similar occurred when England played Argentina in the 1998 World Cup and had players dancing off the pitch following a header from Sol Campbell which had been ruled out because of a foul by Alan Shearer. In that instance play resumed immediately and the glee club had to make a hurried return.

West Ham's win, which incidentally put Portsmouth out of their misery at the bottom, has gone a long way towards keeping Premier League football at Upton Park for another season, when a bit of stability off the field should give the playing side a chance to aim for something better. On Saturday their supporters were belting out bubbles with renewed vigour while keeping fingers and toes crossed.

JOYS FROM BRAZIL FOR BOSS ZOLA
Daily Express
Sunday April 11,2010
By Tony Stenson Have your say(0)
WEST HAM 1 SUNDERLAND 0

HE'S the boy from Brazil few had ever heard of. Yet Araujo Ilan kept West Ham holding on to Premier League survival by their well-chewed finger nails. Ilan rocketed into Hammers folklore with the headed equaliser at Everton last week. He was at it again yesterday, squeezing home a 51st-minute winner to ensure even vice-chairman Karen Brady was happy. She had written in her weekly newspaper article that Hammers were like Steve McQueen on barbed wire in the Great Escape. For long periods they were, and only Mark Noble seemed to have the inclination, skill and vision to lift a side who collapse like a cheap suitcase the moment after leaving home. Sunderland are mathematically safe from relegation, but they certainly aren't the finished article. They couldn't even hope for a beach ball goal. Referee Mike Jones was the official who allowed a goal from Sunderland's Darren Bent to stand against Liverpool after his shot had been deflected past Jose Reina by a beach ball. West Ham left the field to thunderous applause, probably helped by the fact that virtually doomed Burnley had beaten relegation rivals Hull City. And they were wondering why sub Franco had been denied a late second goal. But it was blatant handball to those who watched from other angles. The game sadly lacked quality, and if someone had just arrived from the moon they would have found it difficult to decide which club was more in trouble. There were rare moments when two or three passes went to foot. Hammers walked on eggshells for most of the opening skirmishes, knowing any mistake would prise the relegation door open once more. Sunderland fed off their fear, sneaking players into worrying positions and easily clearing any attacks.
It was clear to see why West Ham were looking for their first win in eight matches. Sunderland arrived not having won at Upton Park for five years, and with an away record of one win in 11, enough at other clubs to get a manager the sack. Thankfully, they have a chairman in Niall Quinn who has seen both the best and worst of soccer. He only panics when his horse is one stride off the lead with the winning post in sight. Like most Irishmen, he forever sees the glass half-full. For a team caught in the relegation net, West Ham didn't show too much inclination to cut the ropes. There was almost an air of end-of-season to the attacks, although Sunderland played their part by being quick into tackles and eager to get forward. Lee Cattermole was booked in the 26th minute for a foul on Valon Behrami, who went down like a sack of spuds, yet within seconds was racing back like a hare. No wonder fans and managers get agitated. They also get upset when goalkeepers deliberately handball when outside their area and then complain, like Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon in the 41st minute. Then Ilan, hero of Goodison, was at it again, touching home after Carlton Cole had touched on Manuel da Costa's free-kick from inside his own half. Cattermole went close in the 61st minute when fed by Bent, but Sunderland's finishing overall was weak. And who won the battle of the strikers? Many would claim Cole edged out fellow World Cup hopeful Bent.

West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola urges squad to concentrate in Premier League run-in
Hammers boss tells side to stay focused to secure survival…

West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola has warned his players they must stay focused if they want to retain their Premier League status. A second half strike from Ilan secured a 1-0 win over Sunderland at Upton Park on Saturday which now leaves the Hammers in 16th place, four points above 18th-placed Burnley. There was speculation that Zola could lose his job after a run of six successive defeats but after Saturday's win over the Black Cats and last week's draw with Everton at Goodison Park, pressure has eased on the Italian. "The team has found new belief. We are just getting the best out of that. Yes it is a good momentum - but to make the momentum that we want we need to keep on top of that," said Zola, according to Press Association Sport. "We have two very good results we are in a better position but it is far away to say that it is done. We have Liverpool next week and then Wigan and those two games will tell us everything." One more Premier League win would see West Ham reach 34 points and Zola believes that could be enough to secure survival. "It might be enough but we will try to get more," he added. "This is not a championship where you can say it is over. Nobody was expecting Burnley to beat Hull City. We will stay on our toes."

Ilan says Zola has 'lost control of the West Ham team'
Soccernet
April 11, 2010

Brazilian striker Ilan has criticised West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola after scoring the winner against Sunderland, claming that he has ''lost control of the team". Ilan has scored vital goals in recent games, including Saturday's winner which has lifted the Hammers four points clear of the relegation zone, however he had strong words for his manager after the game. "I don't want to say bad things about Zola because he is a good person, but you know sometimes a good person working in football doesn't work,'' he told the News of the World. ''If you give your players a lot of freedom, they will not obey you anymore. "That is what is happening now at West Ham, especially with players who speak Italian. Zola has lost control of the team and it is impossible for him to recover it." Ilan has started just one game since arriving from St Etienne in January and says he will move on in the summer. "Zola never uses me in my position as a centre forward,'' he added. "He puts me out on the flanks or even as a second forward. "He and the other coaches in the Premier League have an obsession with putting the players in positions different to the one they are used to. Whatever happens, I'm going to leave England. I have received offers from France and Spain and even from three clubs from Brazil."
