Barclays Premier League
West Ham United v Hull City
Boleyn Ground
Saturday 20 February 2010
3pm
Referee: Martin Atkinson

Introduction

• West Ham United will take on Hull City looking to make it two wins from
two home games after beating Birmingham City 2-0 at the Boleyn Ground on
Wednesday 10 February.

• The Hammers go into Saturday's game 15th in the Barclays Premier League
table following Wednesday's goalless draw between Wigan Athletic and Bolton
Wanderers. Victory could lift West Ham above Sunderland and Wigan Athletic
into 13th place.

• West Ham have not lost at home to Hull since 20 January 1990. In the
intervening period, the Hammers have scored 7-1 and 2-0 victories over the
Tigers in October 1990 and January 2009 respectively.

• Hull go into Saturday's game 17th in the standings, level on 24 points
with their hosts but with a far inferior goal difference. West Ham's stands
at minus eight, while Hull's stands at minus 26.

• This is the 36th league meeting between the two sides. West Ham have won
12, drawn 14 and lost nine of the previous 35.

• West Ham have not lost at home in the Barclays Premier League since the 5
December visit of Manchester United. Since then the club have drawn 1-1 with
Chelsea, won 2-0 against Portsmouth, drawn 0-0 with Blackburn Rovers and
beaten Birmingham City 2-0.

• Zola's men have kept three clean-sheets in the last five league matches,
and conceded just three goals in total during that period.

• The pair's most recent meeting at the Boleyn Ground took place on 28
January 2009, when David Di Michele and Carlton Cole scored either side of
half-time in a 2-0 home win. Hull goalkeeper Matt Duke also saved a penalty
from Mark Noble.

• The lineups that day were:

West Ham United: Green, Neill, Collins, Upson, Ilunga, Behrami, Parker,
Collison (Faubert 71), Noble (Boa Morte 84), Di Michele (Savio 86), Cole
Subs not used: Lastuvka, Tristan, Tomkins, Sears

Subs not used: Myhill, Garcia, Halmosi, Folan

• West Ham's biggest home win over Hull was the aforementioned 7-1 success
on 6 October 1990. Hull's best away showing in east London came in the shape
of 2-1 victories on 29 December 1934 and 20 January 1990.

gain promotion to the Premier League in his first season at the KC Stadium.

• Jimmy Bullard spent an early part of his career with West Ham United but
failed to make a first-team appearance for the club before leaving for
Peterborough United in May 2001.

Referee

• Saturday's referee will be Martin Atkinson, who last took charge of the
West Ham United in the 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at Stoke City on
17 October 2009 - his only Hammers appointment this season.

• In contrast, the West Yorkshire official has taken charge of three Hull
City league matches this term - the 4-1 defeat at Sunderland on 12
September, the 3-2 home win over Everton on 25 November and the goalless
draw at Tottenham Hotspur on 16 January.

• In total, Atkinson has refereed 32 matches this season, issuing 130 yellow
cards and three reds.

• A referee since the age of 16, Atkinson was promoted to the Football
League list of assistant referees in 1998. In 2000, Atkinson was promoted to
the Select Group of assistant referees, allowing him to run the line in
Premier League matches.

• He joined the National List of referees for the Football League at the
start of the 2003/04 season before taking charge of his first Premier League
fixture on 20 April 2005 when Manchester City entertained Birmingham City.

• Atkinson was the man in the middle at the 2006 FA Community Shield between
Chelsea and Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. He also took
charge of the 2008 FA Trophy final between Ebbsfleet United and Torquay
United at Wembley Stadium.

• The official has taken charge of one previous West Ham United fixture this
season, officiating in the 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at Stoke City
on Saturday 17 October.

West Ham United

• The Hammers have scored all seven of the penalties they have been awarded
this season, a Barclays Premier League high.

• West Ham have scored 32 goals this season in the league with 12 different
players on target. Carlton Cole leads the way (eight), with Alessandro
Diamanti (six) and Guille Franco and Matthew Upson (three) next in line.
Jack Collison, Junior Stanislas (two each), Ilan, Manuel da Costa, Mark
Noble, the departed Luis Jimenez, Zavon Hines and Radoslav Kovac have also
registered.

• Scott Parker has been cautioned eight times this season and Franco and
Noble five. Julien Faubert, Cole, Collison and Kovac are each on four yellow
cards, but will not be suspended if they receive a fifth as the FA
disciplinary deadline has passed. Should any player reach ten cautions
before the second Sunday in April, they will receive a suspension.

• Only Robert Green has played in every league game for the club this
season. He is on a run of 112 successive league starts.

• Cole is on a run of 15 goals in 27 league starts since Boxing Day 2008
when he scored the second goal in a 4-1 win at Portsmouth.

Hull City

• Manager Phil Brown has been in charge at Hull City since 4 January 2007.
Since then, the 50-year-old has led the Tigers to promotion from the
Championship in 2007/08 before maintaining their Barclays Premier League
status last season.

• Stephen Hunt is Hull's leading Premier League scorer with six goals in 26
appearances. The injured Geovanni and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink have scored
three league goals each. Geovanni has also scored once in each of the two
domestic cup competitions.

• Hunt and full-back Andy Dawson have both started all 26 of the Tigers'
Premier League fixtures this season. Defender Anthony Gardner and goalkeeper
Boaz Myhill have each started 20.

Team news

• Mexico striker Guille Franco and England midfielder Kieron Dyer are both
in contention for Gianfranco Zola's West Ham United matchday squad after
training fully this week.

• It remains to be seen if Benni McCarthy (knee) will be fit to play on
Saturday. Danny Gabbidon (hamstring) is also thought to be close to a full
training return.

• Herita Ilunga has been ruled out of Saturday's game with a tendon injury.

• Luis Boa Morte (knee), Calum Davenport (leg) and Zavon Hines (knee) are
all long-term absentees. Boa Morte has been doing some light training around
the Chadwell Heath pitches - having not played since his cruciate ligament
injury at the Barclays Asia Trophy in China in July.

• Hull City have a number of injury concerns ahead of Saturday's fixture,
with club captain Ian Ashbee definitely ruled out with a long-term knee
ligament problem.

• Brazilian midfielder Geovanni is likely to miss out with a knee injury,
but former West Ham playmaker Jimmy Bullard could feature after recovering
from his own knee problem.

'Let's hear the passion'
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola believes West Ham United's supporters have a vital role to
play on Saturday
19.02.2010

Gianfranco Zola has backed the Boleyn Ground crowd to play a starring role
in Saturday's Barclays Premier League match with Hull City. The West Ham
United manager believes the home fans can act as a 12th man and inspire the
Hammers to victory over the Tigers. Having secured an impressive 2-0 home
win over Birmingham City last time out, Zola also stressed the importance of
following up that success with another positive result on Saturday. "This is
a massive game because we don't need just one result now and then - we need
to put some wins together. That would make a big, big thing for us, so
Saturday is important not only in that sense, but also because we're playing
against a team that is in pretty much the same situation of us. It's vital
that we win this confrontation. "The crowd is always very important but, in
games like the one we're playing on Saturday, they are even more important.
I think, if the crowd are passionate the way they always are, it will be
massive for the players. They will pick it up straight away and they will
respond. "I think it is normal that the crowd shows you their feelings, but
on Saturday, I think it is one of those games when the importance of it
should mean they support us all the time, no matter what happens, and I'm
sure they will do that. "This crowd is very passionate. They care about the
club and I'm sure they will be pushing us forward. That's what I'm looking
for. The players will respond if they hear that support behind them. They
will be buzzing."
With Bolton Wanderers due to visit east London on 6 March, the manager said
everyone at the club was targeting six points from six from the club's next
two home matches.
"The next two games are very important. We start on Saturday. It is a big
opportunity because we can make a big step forward. It's going to have a big
impact on the psychological side and also on the practical side, with the
points we can pick up if we win, so I'm really looking forward to the
match."
Zola said the arrival of new chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold had
helped stabilise matters on and off the pitch, allowing him, his coaching
staff and his players to focus their minds 100 per cent on collecting vital
Premier League points. "I think the situation is much better, yes. There is
a better atmosphere. Everybody is more tuned in because there is not so much
talking and speculation around us, and that is certainly helping the
situation. "We have more stability. We know what we're doing and we know
where we're going. We need to perform better than we've been doing during
the year. The players and staff are focused on that and the situation is
improving."
On the injury front, the manager has been boosted by news that Mexico
striker Guille Franco is fit to return following his recent leg injury,
while Kieron Dyer has also been back in full training. Unfortunately, Herita
Ilunga has been ruled out until next month with a back problem, while Benni
McCarthy will be unavailable for another couple of weeks due to the knee
injury he suffered on his debut at Burnley a fortnight ago. Long-term
absentees Danny Gabbidon, Luis Boa Morte and Zavon Hines are also out.

Cole's goal vow
WHUFC.com
Carlton Cole has unveiled plans to score more than once in a game for the
first time on Saturday
20.02.2010

Carlton Cole would love to go goal-crazy against Hull City this afternoon.
West Ham United's England striker has netted more than 50 goals in his
playing career for club and country - but never scored more than once in a
single game. The 26-year-old is determined to put an end to that record when
the Tigers visit the Boleyn Ground for a vital Barclays Premier League
fixture, although he knows the visitors will pose a difficult challenge.
"I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can notch a few goals because
I've never notched a few in a game before, and we can get the win. "Everyone
in the squad is fired up. We've got good team spirit and a good unit. The
manager has got us all up for it so we're going to be ready for this one.
"Obviously, I want to continue my goalscoring form. I want to get a couple
now, I don't want just one per game. I just want more and I will strive for
more."
West Ham's leading scorer with eight goals this season, Cole has forged a
strong relationship with the club's supporters, and the forward believes the
fans can play a vital role in inspiring the Hammers to victory over Hull.
"The fans were great against Birmingham. They really showed their support
and how they love the club and it spread to the players. That's what we need
- a 12th man to help us to get to where we need to get to. "The fans are
really special here and we all need to pull in the same direction to get the
result today."

Parker prepared
WHUFC.com
Scott Parker is eager to build on victory over Birmingham City by recording
another win on Saturday
19.02.2010

Scott Parker has backed in-form team-mates Alessandro Diamanti and Mido to
fire West Ham United to victory over Hull City. The Hammers go into
Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash at the Boleyn Ground in high
spirits, having overcome Birmingham City 2-0 at the same venue last time
out. With the incentive of recording consecutive league wins for the first
time this season, as well as that of rising to 13th in the table, Parker has
backed his colleagues to rise to the occasion this weekend. Among those he
has tipped to shine are Italian Diamanti, whose free-kick paved the way to
success against Birmingham, and Mido, who has impressed with his skill and
work-rate since joining on loan from Middlesbrough at the start of the
month. With the pair among a number of players in good form, Parker is
targeting three points not only from Saturday's fixture, but also from the
upcoming home matches with Bolton Wanderers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Stoke
City, Sunderland and Manchester City. "We've got another home game coming up
and all our home games from now on are winnable," said the 29-year-old
reigning Hammer of the Year. "We're realistic and we know what we need to do
and hopefully we can build on our win over Birmingham. Back-to-back wins are
crucial in the Premier League. "If you pick up results and pick up another
one and, all of a sudden, things happen for you. "Alessandro did very, very
well in the last game. He worked extremely hard. He's obviously a
technically gifted footballer, but we saw another side of his game against
Birmingham. He worked really hard and his goal rounded off a very good
personal performance from him. "Mido seems like he is enjoying it here. We
need numbers in the building and there's no doubt he's a very good player
and he's got something to prove as well."

MATCH PREVIEW
With both clubs locked together a point above the relegation zone,
Saturday's outcome at the Boleyn Ground could be decided by who keeps their
heads.

Hull manager Phil Brown
West Ham and Hull have each successfully fought against relegation in recent
seasons, yet neither side has shown much likelihood of avoiding another
scrap. West Ham's recent victory over Birmingham was their first for six
games, while Hull have only won once since November. Phil Brown's side could
do worse than adopt the Chinese calendar, given that last weekend heralded
the year of the Tiger. This match could mark the latest comeback from injury
by Hull's Jimmy Bullard. The midfielder began his career with West Ham, the
club he supported as a boy, but his last match in the East End - on his Hull
debut in January 2009 - ended with him suffering the knee injury which kept
him out for nearly 10 months.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

• Hull have lost their last two league trips to West Ham. Their only win in
the last 11 visits, stretching back 75 years, was 2-1 in the old Division
Two in January 1990.

West Ham

• The Hammers won for the first time in six matches when they beat
Birmingham last time out. They are vying for successive league wins for the
first time since March 2009.

• Gianfranco Zola's side are unbeaten in their last four home league
matches, keeping a clean sheet in the last three. A clean sheet against Hull
will equal their Premier League club record of four in a row at home, set on
three previous occasions.

• They have only earned one point after conceding the first goal this
season, losing 10 times and drawing once. They last came from behind to win
a league match in December 2008, beating Stoke 2-1.

• Julien Faubert is poised to make his 50th Premier League appearance.

Hull

• Hull have won one of their last 12 Premier League matches.

• They have gone 18 games without an away win since beating Fulham last
March.

• The Tigers have failed to score in seven of their last nine away games in
the league.

• Nick Barmby has scored 99 club career goals.

£2.5million a point
KUMB.com
Filed: Friday, 19th February 2010
By: Staff Writer

Hammers joint Chairman David Gold has offered to loan Portsmouth up to
£10million to save them from going out of business. Pompey were recently
given seven days by the High Court to find a solution to their crippling
financial problems which left them on the verge of being wound up. Were
they to be so, the results of all teams having played them in the Premier
League this season would be expunged - meaning that West Ham would lose four
points from their meagre tally of 24, plunging the Irons back into the
relegation zone. Despite cliaming that two parties are interested in buying
the club, Gold has stepped in with the extraordinary offer that would ensure
the south coast-based club could continue to operate until the summer, at
least. "We have no duty to assist Portsmouth's owners or chief executive,
who played their part on the current situation, but I feel sympathy for the
fans and for that reason we should consider helping," said Gold. "If
Portsmouth asked me for £10million, I would lend it to them so long as the
Premier League endorsed it and I was repaid on the agreed date. "West Ham
have taken four points off Pompey this season and were they to go out of
business we'd be in the bottom three.
"But I also feel for the Pompey fans. To see your club go into liquidation
would be devastating. If I can do something to avoid that I'd be happy to do
it as a football fan. "But if this measure is being considered simply as a
means of helping Portsmouth to avoid administration then I wouldn't support
it at all. I don't have sympathy for a badly run club that faces
administration."
Portsmouth, who are currently seven points adrift at the bottom of the table
have also asked the Premier League to allow them to sell players outside of
the transfer window in order to avoid being wound up by HMRC. Gold agrees
that this would be a viable solution - but only if those players remain at
Portsmouth for the rest of the season. "The issue isn't about preventing
Portsmouth raising money," he added. "I would have no problem, for example,
if they were allowed to pre-sell players on the understanding they couldn't
play in the league until after the next transfer window. "I do have a
problem with a club being able to buy those players and gain an advantage
over a competitor. I wouldn't want a competitor buying a player not usually
available to them to help them stay up, and neither would my club's rivals
want West Ham doing that. A principle needs upholding."

Sing up, if you love West Ham

Matthew Upson has called upon the club's supporters to get behind the team
against Hull tomorrow - but is still refusing to commit his future to the
club. The club captain, speaking ahead of the visit of United's fellow
Premier League strugglers told whufc.com: "The supporters' backing is
crucial. It always helps when they are behind you. A lot depends on us, we
have to show the right attitude and give them the right messages to get
behind us. If we do, it will be a big atmosphere. "In our position if we
were to get two wins back to back it would boost the situation in the table
and the players' confidence. We need to make sure it happens. We needed the
Birmingham win massively and another would put us in a great position."
However when questioned by the Sun over his future, Upson - who has
steadfastly refused to pen a contract extention - declined to be drawn over
his future at club level.
"I've got a World Cup I'm focused on," he said. "My club form will dictate
how successful I am in terms of going to that. I've a lot of responsibility
and I'm glad of that. I want more and [for] us to do well."
The 30-year-old centre half had appeared to be on his way out of West Ham
during the January transfer window as a result of United's crippling
financial situation, until the arrival of David Sullivan and David Gold
ensured that the club could retain its most coveted players. The former
Birmingham captain's form has suffered as a result of the uncertainty and he
was blamed for Burnley's opening goal in the demoralising 2-1 defeat at Turf
Moor earlier this month. With the World Cup looming, Upson knows only too
well that his club form will have to improve if he is to make Fabio
Capello's squad for South Africa - and if West Ham are to continue their
climb away from the relegation zone.

West Ham United v Hull City: Match Preview

By: Preview Percy

We threatened him with a 25% pay cut if he didn't go away. Unfortunately,
since we don't pay him anything in the first place, he turned up anyway.
Preview Percy casts his eye over this weekend's match....

Next we welcome Hull City (pron. 'ull citeh) to the Boleyn for Saturday's
3pm kick-off.

The visitors currently lie in 17th place, two places below us. They are
level on 24 points with us having played a game more and possessing an
inferior goal difference (-26 compared with our -8). Their overall current
form over the last six games is pretty similar to ours, both of us having
won 1, drawn 3 and lost 2. However, our home form of 3 wins 2 draws and 1
defeat makes more pleasant reading, especially when compared to their away
form of 4 defeats and 2 draws from their last six. Since the turn of the
year they've drawn 0-0 at Spurs, lost 4-0 at Man Utd, drawn at home to
Wolves and Chelsea (2-2 and 1-1 respectively) beaten Man City 2-1 at home
and lost 1-0 away at Blackburn.

Like ourselves, the Tigers have been in the news of late for reasons more
connected with events off the pitch than on it. The club's auditors recently
came up with the worrying statistic that the Club will need to cut annual
costs by £16m – and that's on the assumption that they stay up. Meanwhile,
up in the corridors of power, their former chairman Paul Duffen resigned
last October. Since Duffen's departure there have been accusations and
counter accusation between Duffen and the current regime, which is headed by
returning chairman Adam Pearson. Duffen, it was alleged, misused club funds
for personal use. It was also suggested that a company controlled by Duffen
received payments from agents in return for Hull using those agents in
player deals. Things came to a head in January when Hull instigated legal
proceedings against their former chairman in the High Court, freezing his
assets in the process. Those of us who shivered through the Birmingham match
last week will know just how that feels. Undeterred, Duffen claimed that it
had been he who had started legal proceedings against the club over monies
owed, though Hull denied that this was the case. Whatever the truth, the
case was eventually settled out of court on "terms satisfactory to the
club". Make of that what you will.

We last met up at the KC Stadium back in November, a match that finished in
a bizarre but entertaining 3-3 draw. You'll recall that we were 2-0 up
through Franco & Collison after 11 minutes before Mark Clattenburg decided
to get involved, awarding some dubious free-kicks and a frankly disgraceful
penalty to send us in 3-2 down at the interval. Clattenburg then evened
things up by dismissing Mendy for upending Parker when clean through, before
DaCosta buried a loose ball from a corner to level the scores.

Man of the match that day was, arguably, ex-Hammer Jimmy Bullard. Hull were
keen at the time to stress that what was then a four match unbeaten run was
the result of team efforts rather than the sole influence of Bullard.
However, it was noticeable that the team's form dipped considerably when the
unfortunate Bullard limped off after only 19 minutes of the 3-0 defeat at
Villa Park. Bullard's knee ligament injury saw him leave the field almost in
tears, coming so soon as it did after his recovery from a similar (if more
severe) injury to the other knee. For all Hull's protestations about the
"team effort" it took another eight matches before they put three points on
the board in the 2-1 win over Man City earlier this month. Bullard is close
to a return to action and, though it might be another week or so before he
hits anything like full fitness, such is the player's influence about the
Hull side that the talk is of him playing at least a part in Saturday's
proceedings.

Last week they went down 1-0 at Blackburn, the winning goal being credited
as an own goal to Hull 'keeper Boaz Myhill. The influential George Boateng
was dismissed after an aerial challenge that left both Boateng and Pedersen
out cold. Once Boateng had woken up, the red card brandished by ref Probert
seemed to add insult to injury. This was an opinion with which the FA's
disciplinary bods clearly agreed earlier this week when they overturned the
three-match ban that resulted. Boateng will therefore be available for
Saturday.

They had a quietish window last month. The only incoming player was Amr
Zaki. The Egyptian striker arrived on loan from Zamalek where he was, for a
while, a team-mate of Mido. Zaki made a storming start to his Premier League
career scoring some decent goals – including a fine strike at the Boleyn on
his debut for Wigan. However, Zaki blotted his copybook by returning late
from international duty on a number of occasions, upsetting Steve Bruce and
the illegal price-fixing, child slave labour employing, dodgy share dealing
and Rugby League wage-cap rule-breaking Dave Whelan in the process. Which,
of course, is no bad thing. Whelan, who had likened Zaki to Alan Shearer at
the start of his Wigan career, later downgraded his opinion to "a disgrace".
Well he ought to know.

Also in the forward section of the squad is US international Jozy Altidore
who arrived on loan from Villareal at the start of the season. The
season-long deal contains an option for Hull to buy the player for a
reported fee of £6.5m, though it remains to be seen whether Hull will bother
to exercise the option. Altidore has not been what you'd call prolific and
he has scored but once in 19 games in the league, getting the first against
Man City. He's not exactly been a hit in Spain either where he made only 6
appearances for Villareal. A loan spell at second division Xerez was also
unsuccessful, his spell there being marred by an injury to a toenail which
prevented him from making a single appearance. At international level,
however, he was part of the US squad that surprisingly lifted last year's
Confederations Cup in South Africa, scoring the first in the 2-0 semi-final
win over Spain in Bloemfontein.

The Blackburn match saw Altidore partnered up front by the brilliantly-named
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, with Zaki starting on the bench alongside the
visitors' other ex-Hammer Richard Garcia. Mr V of H (as we will call him to
save my sanity) has barely outshone Altidore up front, having notched only
three times in twenty league matches this season. All of which probably
means that the pair will have a field day this weekend knowing our luck.

One absentee is likely to be Geovanni. Manager Phil Brown had hoped that the
Brazilian might be available for selection in January. However, his knee
injury has taken longer to heal than expected, despite a trip to Portugal to
see a specialist a couple of weeks ago.

So what of us? Well it was a welcome return to winning ways in the sub-zero
temperature of the Boleyn the other week. A few first half scares apart –
and lets face it we'll always have one or two of those – we looked fairly
comfortable against a Birmingham side whose performance admittedly tailed
off alarmingly, especially after the second had gone in. There are, of
course, injury doubts. When are there not? McCarthy, having succumbed to
"Hammer Debut Injury Syndrome" is listed as "doubtful" and is likely to miss
both this game and Tuesday's trip to Salford. Diamanti is also listed as a
"doubt" as is, no, don't laugh, Kieron Dyer.

Ilunga tore a tendon in his back against Birmingham a decent second half in
that match for Spector should mean that the septic will start at left back,
especially as Daprela, who showed great promise against Arsenal in the Cup,
is also on the injured list. The midfield line-up will depend on Diamanti's
fitness, with Noble being a possible to start should the Italian not recover
in time. Up front, despite the absence of McCarthy, it's still a case of
perm any two from four with Franco said to be making a return to the squad.
Mido is presumably likely to get the nod once more over Ilan and the
Generalissimo for the right to partner Cole.

David Sullivan was quick to claim credit for last week's victory with his
"pay cuts for all" speech. He'll have to go some to top that. Look out then
for an "inspirational" speech from the SuGo offices suggesting that the
players' first born will be slaughtered unless they pick up three points on
Saturday.

It's tight at the bottom at the moment. This will be a nervy one but Cole is
beginning to return to his pre-injury sharpness and Mido will have a point
to prove. The doubt about Diamanti is a bit of a worry but I still reckon
that, with a decent start, we ought to have too much for the visitors. So,
with fingers duly crossed, I'll go for a 2-0 to us which, if results
elsewhere go for us, could see us go as high as 13th spot.

Enjoy the game!

Last season: won 2-0. - arguably our best performance of the season with Di
Michele and Cole finding the net. Hull 'keeper Duke saved a Noble penalty
and kept the score down. A repeat of both result and performance would be
most welcome.

Danger Man: Jimmy Bullard. (if fit) – always a worry from set pieces, his
overall influence on the Hull side should not be underestimated.

Referee: Martin Atkinson – took charge of the 2-1 defeat at Stoke where he
gave a penalty against Faubert for being the nearest player to an
Etherington dive, then missed Huth's right hook on Upson at a corner.

Zola a happy Hammer again
Coach ends dispute with co-owners and turns focus back to results
By Chris Burton Last updated: 19th February 2010
SSN

Gianfranco Zola insists the atmosphere at West Ham has improved since his
public spat with the club's owners. The Italian coach was left fuming by
comments made by David Sullivan regarding the Upton Park wage structure and
the fact that players would need to take pay cuts in future contract talks.
Zola questioned the logic behind the timing of the announcement and the need
to make such comments to the media. However, he saw his side respond in the
best possible manner as they claimed a much-needed 2-0 victory over
Birmingham last time out. Zola insists the issue has now been laid to rest
and claims everyone connected with the club is pulling in the same
direction. "It's an old story which has been discussed too much," he said.
"There is a better atmosphere because there isn't so much talking or
speculation now. That has helped the situation."
Zola has also offered an olive branch to Sullivan and his fellow co-owner
David Gold by insisting the duo's arrival in January has helped to lift the
gloom which was starting to envelop Upton Park. "They want to improve the
situation financially and also as a team," he explained. "We have not
suffered any problems because they are looking after us. Nothing has
changed. The new board came in and brought in three players to help us. "The
club are trying to make the situation better, that is important and we do
not have a problem with that. I told the chairmen they can do what is
necessary for the good of the club."
While peace has broken out off the field, West Ham remain just a point above
the Premier League relegation zone heading into Saturday's home date with
Hull City and Zola knows it is imperative his side start to establish some
momentum. He added: "It's a massive game. We don't just need to win one game
every now and again, we need to put some wins together in a row. "We know if
we don't perform well we will be in trouble. All the games are difficult and
we know everything has to be right. "I know the players have difficult times
out there and the manager and staff have to always be supportive. That's
what we try to do and it makes a big difference when people respond to
that."

West Ham v Hull City preview
Crucial relegation six-pointer at Upton Park
By Steve Pass Last updated: 19th February 2010

Predicted Score: West Ham 1 Hull 1
SKY BET ODDS: West Ham 4/5, Draw 5/2, Hull 7/2
West Ham and Hull to draw 1-1 is 6/1 so a £10 stake returns £70. Bet on this
match

West Ham entertain Hull City at Upton Park on Saturday in a vital relegation
six-pointer which is sure to be tense. Both sides go into the game on 24
points - just one above the drop zone - although the Tigers have played a
game more. The Hammers are currently in 15th in the table on the back of the
excellent 2-0 victory over high-flying Birmingham last time out. Gianfranco
Zola's side will be looking to build upon an unbeaten four-match Premier
League home run, which has yielded eight points in their battle against the
drop. Meanwhile, Phil Brown's Tigers are 17th in the table after their 1-0
reverse at Blackburn in their most recent fixture. Like the Hammers, the
Tigers have been relying on home form for their survival hopes - 20 out of
their 24 points so far this term have come at the KC Stadium. The Tigers
have yet to win away and Brown will be desperate to change this statistic at
Upton Park.
Team news
West Ham will be without striker Benni McCarthy for the visit of Hull. The
South African star, who signed for the Hammers on the last day of the
January transfer window, has been out with a knee problem since West Ham's
2-1 defeat at Burnley on 10th February. Herita Ilunga (thigh) will remain
sidelined for at least three more weeks while Danny Gabbidon and Kieron Dyer
(both hamstring) are not ready to return. But West Ham boss Zola has been
boosted by the return of Guillermo Franco from a muscle complaint which has
kept him out for the last two months. Luis Boa Morte, Calum Davenport and
Zavon Hines are long-term absentees for the Hammers.
Hull boss Brown may call on midfielder Jimmy Bullard for only the sixth time
since his £5million move from Fulham last January. The 31-year-old has
returned to training after his latest knee injury, which saw him leave the
field in tears at Aston Villa in December, and could be on the bench. Brown
will definitely be without another midfielder in Geovanni, who is still out
with a knee problem, but George Boateng is available after his red card
against Blackburn was rescinded. Club captain Ian Ashbee remains out with a
long-term knee ligament problem.

Possible starting XIs
West Ham: Green, Faubert, Tomkins, Upson, Spector, Behrami, Kovac, Parker,
Diamanti, Cole, Mido.

Hull City: Myhill, McShane, Gardner, Mouyokolo, Dawson, Fagan, Boateng,
Cairney, Hunt, Altidore, Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Sorry I broke your face Zola
The Sun
By STEVE BRENNER
Published: Today

GEORGE BOATENG will think of two things when he sees Gianfranco Zola today -
a bashed-up face and summer holidays. Back in November 2002, a typically
tasty challenge from the combative former Middlesbrough star left Zola in
agony and his features in a mess. Boateng, 34, claimed it was accidental but
you would have understood if the West Ham boss never wanted to speak to him
again. Zola, though, is clearly not the vengeful type. Not only did he
accept his apology but a few years down the line he went out of his way to
arrange the Hull midfielder a memorable holiday stay in Zola's native
Sardinia. The generous 5ft 6in Upton Park chief will not want his men to
help the Tigers in this afternoon's relegation six-pointer. But Boateng, who
is 6ft, cannot wait to see his old rival again. He said: "Yeah, I had a few
tussles with him. What a player Zola was. He gave the Premier League a new
face but, as a manager, it's a lot harder. "I remember I elbowed him once
because he's so little. Where my elbow was, his face was there, too. "I hurt
him really bad, he was hurt proper. I spoke with him afterwards and he
understood. "When I saw him last year, he said he was pleased I wasn't
playing because he didn't want to get kicked again! "He's a fantastic bloke,
though. He even organised for my family to go on holiday to Sardinia one
year. "He knew a great place over there and sorted it for me through my old
mate Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He got us a 10 per cent discount at this
beautiful place we stayed. It was wonderful. "It says everything about him
that after what happened when I caught him in the face, he still found it in
him to do something good for me."
As for today's clash, Boateng added: "Their confidence will be high but,
although they have good players, they are not a good team. "Hull City have
good players and I believe we are a better team. They have a lot of
individuals and we have seen when they go behind, it's difficult for them to
recover." SunSport caught up with Boateng at a Premier League Places for
Players event in Hull aimed at trying to get the local community more aware
of the importance of health and physical activity. Boateng and rookie Liam
Cooper were shown around the new NHS health centre in Hull. Ex-Tigers
striker John Hawley provided the footy action with kids, and myself,
encouraged to have a go at his Skills Drills programmes.
Boateng does not fit the usual stereotype for a footballer. Honest,
talkative, intelligent and totally willing to help those worse off than
himself, the Dutchman gives his all to everything - on and off the pitch.
Growing up in poverty-stricken Ghana has taught him to appreciate every
living second. And he travels back to his homeland to help kids get a start
in life. Boateng explained: "My parents took me to Holland when I was nine.
The poverty I experienced in Africa certainly makes me appreciate everything
I have today.
"I remember living in one room with a bed and a fridge. We had to walk a
mile to get water. Sometimes you had no shoes to wear. "We played football
at school and put our lunch money on the result just to try to get some
food. So you either had a full belly or you were starving all day. "They
were hard times. That's why I see helping the community in any way I can as
such an important aspect of my life. "I go back once a year and as soon as I
get back I think, 'Right I won't let the taps run like I normally do'. It
makes you think."

No way your pay will go Up
The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON
Published: Today

MATTHEW UPSON has been told he will not get a penny pay rise out of West
Ham. The England defender has just over a season left on his contract and
earns £68,000 a week at the cash-strapped Hammers. Club owners David Gold
and David Sullivan must slash the £60million wage bill even if it means
losing their top earner. Gold said: "Matthew is an outstanding player. You
can see how important he is to us. "We will do everything we can to retain
him but we're not going to go bust. "What we inherited here is a club that's
been paying wages as if it is Manchester United and that cannot continue.
It's in a mess. "We have to take some tough actions. What we will drive for
is to ensure the club and manager has funds to stabilise the footballing
side."
Gold has offered to lend skint Portsmouth £10m but admits it is mainly to
save West Ham's skin. Pompey face going out of business, with another date
in court with the taxman next week. Relegation-threatened West Ham would
lose four points if Portsmouth went into liquidation and had all their
results erased. Gold said: "I want them to get relegated and to go into
administration, but I will be mortified if they go bust. "West Ham's
involvement is that everyone here is hoping they get relegated. It is human
nature. We want three clubs relegated. "If Portsmouth are one of them, we'll
cheer them all the way down - that's what we do for a living. "It will be
sad for their fans but it won't destroy them.
"In all honesty, the four points is the driving motive but we also owe it to
them. The Premier League is made up of 20 football clubs, not 19." The
Hammers face fellow strugglers Hull today and Zola said: "It's a massive
game."

Fans vote 'Yes' for dancers

The club received an overwhelming response in favour of a half-time dance
troupe
18.02.2010

West Ham United are delighted to announce that fans have voted
overwhelmingly in favour of a return for a dance troupe like the
Hammerettes. More than 15,000 votes, emails and correspondence have been
received by the club, with 95 per cent of supporters calling for the
half-time entertainment to come back to the Boleyn. The online poll came as
the club continues to look for ways to improve the matchday experience for
supporters and all suggestions are welcome.

With huge nationwide attention, including coverage on TV, online and in
national papers, the club would welcome interest from organisations wanting
to sponsor the half-time dancers. Anyone interested in getting involved in
sponsorship for this or any of the other exciting matchday opportunities,
should email corporatesales@westhamunited.co.uk with 'Half-time

Upson's call to arms

The club captain is banking on the Boleyn being packed again for Saturday's
home match with Hull
18.02.2010

Matthew Upson has issued a rallying call for supporters to ensure a bumper
turn-out for this Saturday's home match against Hull City. With just under
2,000 seats left for what promises to be a major meeting at the Boleyn, the
skipper said strong backing from the Hammers faithful was vital to the
cause. The impact of the fans during the last win against Birmingham City
was clear he said in helping the team picking up three precious points. "The
supporters' backing is crucial," Upson said. "It always helps when they are
behind you. A lot depends on us, we have to show the right attitude and give
them the right messages to get behind us. If we do, it will be a big
atmosphere. "We are looking forward to Saturday. In our position if we were
to get two wins back to back it would boost the situation in the table and
the players' confidence. We need to make sure it happens. We needed the
Birmingham win massively and another would put us in a great position."

Hammers battle for starlet
Youngster attracting interest from Premier League rivals
Last updated: 18th February 2010
SSN

West Ham face a fight to hold on to starlet Dominic Vose, skysports.com
understands. The Hammers only signed Vose from London rivals Fulham last
year, when he was just 15. Now the 16-year-old is attracting big interest
from abroad with leading clubs from Holland and Portugal looking to snatch
him away this summer. Vose cannot sign a professional contract until he is
17 and should he move abroad, as he is entitled to do, only minimal
compensation would be due. Being under 17, Vose is also allowed to join a
club in England, but being one of the top prospects in the country the
compensation deal is likely to be much greater. This, though, is not putting
off suitors like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Vose was first
looked at by United and Arsenal 18 months ago, when he was labelled the new
Paul Scholes. Despite training at United, West Ham persuaded him to move
across the capital from Fulham, but now they face a battle to cling on to
him. West Ham are desperate for the midfielder to remain and will look to
persuade him that his future is best served at Upton Park

MATTHEW UPSON is refusing to commit his long-term future to West Ham. The
Upton Park skipper, 30, has a year left on his contract and West Ham owner
David Sullivan has hinted he may be sold to ease the club's financial debt.
Manchester City and Tottenham were strongly linked to the England defender
in the January window. And when asked if he was considering his future at
West Ham next season, Upson said: "Not really. "I've got a World Cup I'm
focused on. "My club form will dictate how successful I am in terms of going
to that. "I've a lot of responsibility and I'm glad of that. I want more and
us to do well."

Gold: I'll lend Pompey 10 Million
The Sun

WEST HAM chief David Gold has offered to lend Portsmouth £10million to keep
them from going bust. But the Hammers co-chairman insists the loan would
have to be underwritten by the Premier League. Gold said "If Portsmouth
asked me for £10m, I would lend it to them so long as the Premier League
endorsed it and I was repaid on the agreed date. "West Ham have taken four
points off Pompey this season and were they to go out of business we'd be in
the bottom three. "But I also feel for the Pompey fans. To see your club go
into liquidation would be devastating. "If I can do something to avoid that
I'd be happy to do it as a football fan."
Pompey need to pay a £12.1m tax bill by March 1 or face being wound up. They
have already asked the Premier League for permission to sell players outside
the transfer window to raise cash. But Gold's amazing offer is almost
certain to be blocked by league rules which state a club cannot directly or
indirectly lend money or guarantee the debts of another club.

World Cup legend Geoff Hurst 'conned out of £600k'
Published 09:48 18/02/10 By Allison Martin
The Mirror

England World Cup star Sir Geoff Hurst lost £600,000 in a Spanish property
scam. The hat-trick hero, 68, is one of seven investors fighting in the High
Court for £2million they claim was pocketed by financial adviser Mark
Cordner. Their barrister Peter Knox, QC told the High Court yesterday that
the alleged victims had been deceived by Cordner and partner Michael Hone.
Mr Hone has disappeared but it is claimed Cordner, who lives in a
£2.2million home in Knebworth, Herts, is liable. The seven, who handed over
a total of £1.3million, thought they were investing in property firm Royal
Marbella Group. But it never owned the land near Marbella where the luxury
flats were built by another group in 2007. The money was not held separately
but went into the accounts of Hone and Cordner, said Mr Knox. With interest
and other loans, the claim against Cordner is £2million.
Cordner denies negligence and deceit. Sir Geoff, said earlier: "I am angry
at the lies I was told." The hearing continues.

Stanislas – Right, Left or Centre?
West Ham Till I Die

No, I am not alluding to the player's political views! The question that I
wish to pose is whether Junior Stanislas is best deployed on the right side,
left side or even through the middle?

Stanislas is a talented young player who has pace, good control & balance
and a eye for goal. He is probably second only to Diamanti in terms of
proficiency at the dead ball, as demonstrated most recently against Burnley.
However, he is not, as yet, the finished product. In particular, he does
not always use his gifts to the best effect and needs to have the
self-confidence to run at opponents more and, perhaps, polish up on his
finishing.

Another area that arguably needs attention is his work rate and ability to
track back and provide cover for his full-back/wing back, as appropriate. He
has been played quite a lot on the left hand side and makes a good go of it.
However, as a natural right-footer he constantly has to correct himself and
cut in on his right peg. That is not always a bad thing in itself, but he
is arguably at a disadvantage when crossing the ball or getting to the left
byline and cutting it back into the area. Arguably, this is an aspect of
play that West Ham need to improve on as a team. We need greater width to
get behind and turn opposing defences. Faubert showed how to do it against
Birmingham City, powering to the byline and pulling the ball back for Cole
to score. We need more of that in our attacking play in future.

So, should West Ham deploy Stanislas primarily on the right flank,
exploiting the greater utility of his right foot? That would seem to be the
sensible option, but it is a valuable trait that he can switch flanks, in
order to vary attacking play during the course of a match. However,
whichever flank he plays on, he needs to improve on his workrate to tackle
back and prove cover to his full-back/wing back partner. Otherwise the
full-back/wing-back on his flank could be over-exposed defensively when
either the opposition are on the attack or he is pushing forward to support
our forward play.

I have advocated deploying Diamanti in the hole behind the two strikers or
at the point of a midfield diamond. I still think that we should experiment
with Diamanti in that role at some point, although I acknowledge how
effective he was against Birmingham City on the left flank. And that he
probably needs to stay in that position for the time being. What will be
interesting with Diamanti is to see how he copes with man marking and
players doubling up on him when he has the ball, once the opposition coaches
realise how crucial he is to West Ham's attacking fluidity. Personally I
think he will cope with it well and, it should be remembered that, when a
player is given that much attention it does create extra space for his team
mates to exploit!

Anyway I digress, the point is it would also be interesting to see Stanislas
tried in a free role between midfield and the two strikers. With the tools
at his disposal he could excel there, playing, with pace, through the
middle, supporting the strikers and getting in to advanced, goal scoring
positions. Arguably, he would need to be bolder in such a role, having the
confidence to run at the heart of opposition defences, take a pop at goal
and convert chances.

Stanislas has been used a lot this season from the substitutes bench. And
he has often added width, and improved the quality of our forward play, when
introduced. He is a player that Zola needs to show confidence in and mould
in to a 'finished product.' With the right development not only could
Stanislas become an invaluable playing asset in the Hammers squad, but even
possibly force his way into England contention for the 2012 European
Championships and/or 2014 World Cup.

Indeed, amidst all the shock-horror financial revelations, and the anxiety
of a relegation battle, we should keep sight of the ability of our
youngsters and the quality of our Academy and youth scouting system. With
Stech, Daprela, Tomkins, Eyjolfsson, Spence, Stanislas, Hines, Collison,
Sears, Dixon and Nouble, all representing their respective countries at
either U-19 or U-21 levels, and firmly in the Hammers first team squad
picture, the future looks very bright indeed. Add to that those bubbling
under like Kerns, Edgar, Hall, etc, and things look even better! As Ian
Drury famously sang, 'reasons to be cheeful' ….. rays of optimistic light
amidst the seemingly never ending doom and gloom!

Speaking of which, congratulations to Terry Dixon on being selected once
again for the Republic of Ireland U-21s. That is a very good sign that
things are well fitness wise and he is also starting to show some good form.
In fact the Republic U-21 Manager, Don Givens, has said that he has watched
Dixon at West Ham and he looks like he is getting back to his best! That
can only be good news for a club that had the foresight and courage to take
a gamble on his recovery!

And finally, the SSN story 'Hammers Battle for Starlet' caught my eye this
morning. Apparently, 16 year old hot property, Dominic Vose is currently
with our Academy, but is attracting attention from Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelski
and clubs from Holland and Portugal! A very promising midfielder, Vose has
been called the new Paul Scholes!

The club cannot sign Vose on a professional contract until he is 17 and the
danger is that these clubs will try and step in at that point. Hopefully,
the youngster will realise that the quality of the football education he
will receive at West Ham, and the greater prospect of eventually being given
a first team opportunity, means that he should stay with the Hammers.
Perhaps he should also talk to Frank Nouble and ask him why he felt
compelled to leave a 'top 4 club' and join West Ham to develop and progress
his career!

SJ. Chandos.

Fergie and Wenger battle for "Next Scholes"

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Manchester United manager Sir Alex
Ferguson are both chasing West Ham united starlet Dominic Vose. The two
Premier League greats have already locked horns over Fulham youngster Chris
Smalling, a battle that was won by Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson. It is
believed the young England centre half commanded a fee in the region of £10
million.
West Ham snatched the youngster away from West London rivals Fulham last
summer, when the player was 15, and now the Hammers are expecting offers
from both Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. Vose has already spent a week
at both Manchester United and Arsenal's training groung, back in 2008 when
the highly – rated youngster was at Fulham. However, West Ham managed to
snatch the player from under the radar of Manchester United and Arsenal,
with lure of a quicker path into first team football. West Ham have pushed
through a number of youngster in recent years including Jack Collison,
Junior Stanislas, Zavon Hines, and James Tomkins. The youngster has been
compared to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, as well as being tipped
as England mainstay of the next generation.

Bullard ready for comeback against West Ham
ESPN
February 18, 2010

Jimmy Bullard could make his latest comeback from injury in Hull's Premier
League clash against West Ham at Upton Park on Saturday. Bullard damaged his
left knee in City's defeat by Aston Villa on December 5 and limped off the
field in tears. The blow came less than two months after he had returned to
action following surgery to his right knee which kept him out for nearly ten
months. He first injured his right knee in September 2006 and did not play
again for more than a year, so Hull boss Phil Brown is keen not to rush his
record signing. ''Jimmy in his own head needs one or two games, not full
games necessarily, and a little bit of contact from opposition,'' said
Brown. ''Probably on Saturday he might play some part in terms of the bench
but he won't be ready to start. Then we've got a game against Wigan in the
reserves next Tuesday and we've arranged a game over in Ireland and again
that will be earmarked for Jimmy. ''Jimmy's raring to go and it's just
managing that situation. We did it very successfully last time. It's piecing
that jigsaw together and making sure when he crosses the white line in his
first game back that he's ready not just to play but to grab a hold of the
game in that fashion that only Jimmy Bullard can do.''
And Brown is confident the former Fulham midfielder's natural exuberance on
the park will not be affected by yet another serious injury. ''The knee is
not 100% but it's getting somewhere near,'' Brown explained. ''It's a new
reference point because it's a completely fresh injury on a different leg.
Jimmy's feeling confident about it, the twisting and turning that he's done,
and now a lot of work with the ball. If you can control the ball and control
the game like Jimmy does, then the confidence follows. ''Psychology plays
its part in any recovery and Jimmy has had a whole host of injuries that
he's come back from. So that suggests to me that psychologically Jimmy is
very strong. ''He's relishing the challenge. He had that challenge at
Fulham, they were in dire straits and he came back in and arrested it. He
gets players playing.''

Should Sullivan let sleeping dogs lie at West Ham?
Date: 18th February 2010 at 7:04 pm
Author: prashant bhatt

West Ham's new owners have reignited the Carlos Tevez affair by launching a
legal challenge against the club's former solicitors, and the F.A., for
their handling in this long running problem. David Sullivan and David Gold
feel the Hammers were badly advised by their legal team during the Tevez
saga which landed the club a £5.5million fine, plus around £19m in
compensation and costs to Sheffield United.

In attempting to recoup the losses, Sullivan and Gold have already dismissed
match-day ambassadors and have ended club credit cards and mobile phones.
This all comes after inheriting a £110m debt at Upton Park last month;
therefore the owners are attempting to get the cash back. Overall, Sullivan
feels that West Ham were badly advised by their old legal team during the
whole Tevez episode.

In a backdrop to the financial difficulty at Upton Park, another of the
£110m debt relates to former manager Alan Curbishley. West Ham have paid up
the compensation to Curbishley who had asked for £3.2m, plus £500,000 costs,
and it is believed he received more than £2m in the end.

Amongst all the speculation, it is certainly within the realms of
possibility that the owners will launch court proceedings. However, this
could be hard to nail down due to the fact that this whole story has had
many twists and turns. David Sullivan had suggested that the Hammers were
making an error in pleading guilty in losing the compensation case against
Sheffield United. This all comes after a successful claim in the courts,
from Sheffield United, regarding their relegation to the Championship in the
season of 2006/07. West Ham has to pay out, and with seemingly no way out of
it, could they offer to pay a lump sum in the hope that a lesser amount can
be given?

The outline of the situation is that it is more to do with Gold and Sullivan
being unhappy with the way things appear to have been conducted. The action
that they are willing to take is brave, yet West Ham fans may salute them
for stamping their foot down on the way things were done previously, but
would it have been better just to leave alone what looked like finally dying
away? It is hard to see how the Hammers can seek benefit from what the
owners intend to do. It is questionable as to whether they are fully
justified because this is something that does not involve the new owners in
the first place. This is an offense from the previous owners.

The fact that the story has come in to the public eye, after the latest
revelations, is news that may worry West Ham supporters. Therefore, it might
have been better for the club to move on, but even that will be difficult
now that they have opened the doors. If anything does happen then the fans
have every right to question whether the owners have done the right thing or
not. As this is only the beginning of yet another twist, supposedly, then
there is the potential for things to become uglier.

West Ham United v Hull City
Upton Park
Kick-off: 15.00 GMT
TV: Highlights, BBC1 Match of the Day.

West Ham have won once in their last six Premier League games, but they have
lost only two during that run. In November, at the KC Stadium, West Ham were
2-0 up after 11 minutes but by half-time they were losing 3-2. Hull's
Bernard Mendy was sent-off in the second half before Manuel da Costa scored
the equaliser. Hull's hopes of surviving in the Premier League have been
hindered by a run of just one win in 12 League games. And they are without
George Boateng, sent off at Blackburn. In addition, Jimmy Bullard – once of
West Ham – is still recovering from a knee injury while Ian Ashbee is out
and Geovanni remains a doubt. West Ham are without Luis Boa Morte, Calum
Davenport, Zavon Hines and Danny Gabbidon while doubts persist over
Guillermo Franco, Benni McCarthy and Fabio Daprela.

Team details (probable)

West Ham (4-4-2): Green; Faubert, Tomkins, Upson, Spector; Behrami, Parker,
Kovac, Diamanti; Mido, Cole.
Hull (4-4-2): Myhill; Dawson, Gardner, McShane, Zayatte; Ghilas, Olofinjana,
Kilbane, Hunt; Altidore, Vennegoor of Hesselink.

This season: Hull 3 West Ham 3.

Last season: Hull 1 West Ham 0, West Ham 2 Hull 0.

Stat of the game: Hull last won at Upton Park in January 1990. In two
subsequent visits, they have lost 7-1 and 2-0.

Parker: Time for West Ham to get ugly
19.02.10 | tribalfootball.com

Scott Parker says West Ham United need to start winning ugly. The Hammers
are just a point off the drop zone in 15th but midfielder Parker believes
Gianfranco Zola's can pull clear if they do all the dirty work starting with
the visit of fellow strugglers Hull city at the KC Stadium on Saturday.
Parker, who has been the Hammers' outstanding player in a frustrating
season, said: "We're a good passing side and what we've got to do now is the
dirty stuff. We've got to get out there and do the ugly stuff to give us a
platform to build on and hopefully we can start doing that."

Collison looks to Hull and back
WHUFC.com
Young midfielder Jack Collison made an impact the last time the Hammers met
the Tigers
17.02.2010

Jack Collison is determined to fight for his place in the West Ham United
team in the hope of repeating his scoring feat against Hull City. The
midfielder struck the second goal of a thrilling 3-3 draw back on 21
November but the Hammers saw a two-goal advantage turn into a one-goal
deficit by half-time before a second-half equaliser. Collison said the aim
was to go one better this weekend at the Boleyn Ground and claim a second
successive victory. "I scored at Hull after we started that game really well
but unfortunately let them back in it. We are looking for a bit of revenge
on Saturday and to take the three points. They are coming to our place this
time and to win would be massive."
The 21-year-old said home support would be telling and issued a rallying cry
to the fans to be in full voice again. "Their support is what we need. It is
a huge game. It is very tight down the bottom and it will be great if they
can be our 12th man. "The fans haven't got on our back at all this season -
even at times when we haven't played too well, they have been superb
Hopefully we can pay them back."
Collison did not figure in last week's 2-0 home success against Birmingham
City but you will not hear him complaining after that morale-boosting
triumph. "Everyone is together. It has given the whole place a massive lift.
"It is hard not playing but the boys won and I was very happy for them. The
manager obviously made the right decision because we won but I am just going
to try and force my way back into the team. I'll have to drop in a little
word about my goal last time!"

Zola calls for same again

A passsionate and noisy Boleyn is just what is required this weekend,
according to Gianfranco Zola
18.02.2010

Gianfranco Zola has spoken of the importance of the fans ahead of Saturday's
visit of Hull City as West Ham United look to make it two wins from two. The
squad is on the up after the 2-0 success against Birmingham City last week
and only limited tickets remain for this weekend. Hull are level on points
with the Hammers, although three places lower in the standings, and a home
win would push the club further away from the bottom three and towards
mid-table.
In a message to fans, the manager said: "I am sure we will have the boost
from the Birmingham match but we have to start all over again. Yet again,
the crowd will be massive. With passion and belief from the fans, it will
make a big difference. "This partnership is what it is all about. We will
try to do our part by playing good football and making you proud, you can do
yours by getting behind us. "We will never take your support for granted and
appreciate the efforts you make. All together we can make it a good day."
The previous meeting between the clubs back on 21 November was a thrilling
contest, ending in a 3-3 draw after a see-saw encounter. With this fixture
being classed a Category B match, tickets start from just £35 for adults,
£17.50 for over 65s and £17 for under-16s. Additional discounts are offered
to young adult and junior Academy Members. Tickets can be purchased either

Carr backing for Academy awards

The Academy Director has spoken about the importance of this season's end of
season event
18.02.2010

Tony Carr has thrown his support behind the club's second annual End of
Season Awards dinner to be held at the London Hilton on Tuesday 4 May. The
Academy Director is delighted that all proceeds from the gala event will go
towards developing the club's youngsters. After the huge success of last
year's evening, when he was singled out for a special tribute, Carr hoped
this year's dinner would be as equally well attended. "It is nice we get the
share of the spotlight. We have our own awards trophy for most improved
player and young player of the year. They are going to be awarded at the
dinner along with the first team awards which is fantastic. It was a great
dinner last year and it was a great evening and I look forward to it again
this year. It should be a great night. "The Academy is the lifeblood of our
football club. It has set us in good stead for many years. From our point of
view at the football club it is important we keep producing young players
for the first team. In effect, that stops us having to go into the transfer
market so much."
The ceremony will take place in the beautiful surroundings of the Grand
Ballroom at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Guests of honour on the night
will be the 1980 FA Cup-winning squad, who will celebrate the 30th
anniversary of their unforgettable 1-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley. The
evening will also see the unveiling of the 2009/10 Hammer of the Year -
sponsored by Vantis Business Recovery Services - the Young Hammer of the
Year, and the winners of the Best Goal and Best Team Performance of the
season awards.
Tickets for what promises to be a very special, star-studded evening are
available, costing £2,500 a table of ten. Alternatively, a limited number of
individual places are available at £250 per person. For more information,

West Ham settle Alan Curbishley compensation claim
BBC.co.uk

West Ham have settled the compensation claim made against them by former
manager Alan Curbishley. The 52-year-old, who left the club in September
2008 won his case for constructive dismissal against the Hammers last
November. And an undisclosed compensation fee has now been settled by the
club's new owners David Sullivan and David Gold. "With my managerial record
intact, I am now looking forward to getting back into management," said
Curbishley. "It has taken many months to conclude this case but I am proud
of my record at West Ham. "I would like to thank David Sullivan for acting
quickly and concluding the settlement since his arrival at West Ham."
Last autumn, a Premier League managers' arbitration tribunal upheld
Curbishley's claim and dismissed a counter-claim by the Hammers but did not
decide on the amount of compensation. Curbishley resigned after defenders
Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney were sold against his wishes. The
former Charlton boss launched his case after the Hammers counterclaimed for
the cost of employing Curbishley's successor Gianfranco Zola and his
assistant Steve Clarke.
A statement from West Ham read: "West Ham United are pleased to confirm the
club has settled all outstanding matters with Alan Curbishley. "Upon taking
charge of the club last month along with David Gold, joint-chairman David
Sullivan acted straight away in order to reach a settlement that was in the
best interests of all parties. "An FA Premier League arbitration tribunal
had previously upheld Curbishley's claim of wrongful dismissal following his
resignation at the beginning of the 2008-09 season."
Sullivan added: "I am pleased this has all been settled. We moved as swiftly
as we could to resolve the matter in a positive manner with Alan and his
representatives. "As football people, we realise this had to be dealt with
from a moral and legal point of view as quickly and possible. It was best to
draw a line through what had gone on under the previous owners, allowing us
instead to focus fully on our challenge of taking West Ham United forward."
Curbishley made 85 first-team appearances for West Ham during his playing
career and rejoined the club as manager in December 2006, saving them from
relegation in his first season. In his first full campaign at Upton Park,
Curbishley steered West Ham to a 10th-place finish in the Premier League.

Jowell plays down West Ham's Olympic Stadium hopes
BBC.co.uk

West Ham's hopes of moving to the Olympic Stadium after the London Games in
2012 have been dealt a blow by Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell. The club's
new owners have targeted a move from Upton Park to the 80,000 capacity
stadium as they try to improve West Ham's finances. But Jowell said: "It
will be a grand prix athletics stadium.
"We have made that commitment, that was one of the reasons that we bid to
win the Games and so that is a given."
David Sullivan and David Gold took over cash-strapped West Ham in January
and immediately confirmed an intention to relocate to the Olympic Stadium in
nearby Stratford.
A major stumbling block to the proposed move is that the running track at
the stadium would have to remain as part of the London organising
committee's commitment to leave a legacy to athletics in East London.
Sullivan said at the time of the takeover: "We hope to persuade the
government to let us move into the new Olympic Stadium and I believe the
people of east London would support that move. Asked whether they would be
happy to live with the track around the pitch, Sullivan said: "Ideally no,
but there may be a way we could lay the running track for three months or
something. "I don't think running tracks work, particularly behind the goal.
The customers are so far back it doesn't work."
Jowell was critical of Sullivan for making public comments about the Olympic
Stadium move. "I don't think you can jump from a press conference where the
new owners sit down and say we'd like to move to the to Olympic Stadium to
how it might work," she said. "In order to make sure we maximise the legacy
of the park, we have set up the Olympic Park Legacy Company and they will
shortly be inviting bids and business plans from any business that wants to
apply for a commercial stake in the stadium and if West Ham want to made a
bid at that time it will be considered alongside all the others."
Jowell is currently in the Canadian city of Vancouver, which is hosting the
Winter Olympics. The start of the Games was overshadowed by the death of
Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili and there have been ongoing problems
caused by unsuitable weather. But Jowell said: "I think that (Vancouver
organising committee) VANOC have done a really wonderful job. "They have had
some really big challenges, like the weather for instance, but what they
have really got going for them, and I think this is something that our media
back home doesn't quite get, is that these are Canada's Games and the people
of Vancouver are 1000% behind them. "Whatever carping there may have been in
the British media, it is not reflected here."

Curbishley settles

Alan Curbishley has reached an out-of-court settlement with West Ham United
with regards to his claim for constructive dismissal. The ex-Irons boss sued
the club's former administration for wrongful dismissal after he walked out
on the club in Spetember 2008 citing the then board's decision to undermine
his authority by selling players without his consent. Curbishley, who won
the ensuing court case has agreed a figure worth in the region of
£1.5million according to unconfirmed reports. News of the settlement was
revealed by the LMA (League Manager's Association). A no-doubt delighted
Curbishley said: Commenting on the issue, Curbishley said: "It has taken
many months to conclude this case but I am proud of my record at West Ham
which included a win ratio of 40%, after initially keeping the club in the
Premier League and a 10th place finish in my only full season in charge. "I
would like to thank David Sullivan for acting quickly and concluding the
settlement since his arrival at West Ham. I would also like to thank the
LMA, Mike Morrison of Hill Dickinson and Paul Gilroy QC for their support,
hard work and confidence in my case."
Curbishley, who has been out of work since leaving his post at the club
revealed that he was looking forward to becoming involved in the game once
again, now that the case had been concluded. "With my managerial record
intact, I am now looking forward to the future and getting back into
football management," he said.

Olympic blow for Irons

West Ham United's chances of moving to the Olympic Stadium have suffered a
blow after Tessa Jowell insisted that it should remain an athletics arena
post-2012. Jowell, the Minister for the Olympics criticised West Ham
United's new joint-owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, for making public
their plans to move to Stratford - despite having failed to speak with the
committee charged with determining its legacy post the games. "Let's be
clear about this. It will be a grand prix athletics stadium because we need
one," said Jowell. "We have made that commitment, that was one of the
reasons that we bid to win the Games and so that is a given. "I don't think

Gold and Sullivan have maintained that the club's future lies in Stratford,
which they insist is the only viable solution for the 80,000 capacity arena.

Hammers settle Curbs claim
Former Upton Park boss keen to get back into management

West Ham have settled their compensation case with former manager Alan
Curbishley. Curbishley has been seeking compensation after winning his case
for wrongful dismissal against West Ham last November. The former Charlton
manager claimed he had no option but to resign from his role at Upton Park
in September 2008 claiming he was not awarded sufficient control over
transfer matters. A Premier League managers' arbitration tribunal in
November ruled Curbishley was justified in his actions because the club sold
Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney to Sunderland against his wishes. The
tribunal, which dismissed a counter claim from West Ham, have now decided
how much compensation the club owe to Curbishley with the 52-year-old
reportedly claiming the loss of two years' salary. The compensation
agreement has now cleared the way for Curbishley to return to management
with a number of clubs linked with Curbishley's services in the past. "It
has taken many months to conclude this case but I am proud of my record at
West Ham which included a win ratio of 40%, after initially keeping the club
in the Premier League and a 10th place finish in my only full season in

Hammers dealt stadium blow
Olympic Stadium must leave athletics legacy
Last updated: 17th February 2010
SSN

West Ham's hopes of relocating to London's Olympic Stadium have been dealt a
blow. The Hammers had been hoping to move into the state of the art stadia
once the 2012 Games have been completed. A switch to the 80,000 capacity
ground would allow the capital club to house considerably more supporters
than is possible at their current Upton Park home. However, Olympics
Minister Tessa Jowell has moved to warn West Ham that the venue's primary
purpose will be to stage grand prix athletics. Officials insist the Games in
2012 must leave a legacy to athletics in East London and are adamant
meetings will continue to be staged at the stadium. That news will
disappoint the Hammers' co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold, who would
prefer to host matches without an athletics track running around the pitch.
''Let's be clear about this. It will be a grand prix athletics stadium
because we need one,'' said Jowell. ''We have made that commitment, that
was one of the reasons that we bid to win the Games and so that is a
given.''
Jowell has also criticised Sullivan and Gold for openly declaring their
intention to relocate to the Olympic Stadium, as such a move would have to
be sanctioned by the Olympic Park Legacy Company. She said: ''I don't think
you can jump from a press conference where the new owners sit down and say
we'd like to move to the to Olympic Stadium to how it might work. ''In
order to make sure we maximise the legacy of the park, we have set up the

his world lightweight title shot at Upton Park. The West Ham co-owner is a
boxing nut and would love to see huge Hammers fan Mitchell, 25, take on
Aussie Michael Katsidis for the vacant WBO crown at the Boleyn. Sullivan,
who has sponsored former boxing world champions Lennox Lewis and Chris
Pyatt, said: "I'd like to accommodate Mitchell if it is possible. It would
be an event as well as a boxing show. "Early in the close season would be
ideal as it would give the pitch more time to recover. "The shorter the
length of time the pitch is covered over the better. "We have to weigh up

Curbishley's 2.5 million payday

ALAN CURBISHLEY can start looking for a new job - after finally pocketing a
£2.5million payoff from West Ham. Curbs, 52, won his case for constructive
dismissal against the club last year after he quit as boss in September 2008
following the sale of players behind his back. While he was in dispute with
West Ham, he did not take a job as it could have affected his payout. New
co-owner David Sullivan made settling with Curbishley a priority when he
took over with David Gold last month. Sullivan said: "I am pleased this has
all been settled. We moved as swiftly as we could. "It was best to draw a
line through what went on under the previous owners, allowing us to focus on
taking West Ham forward."

West Ham United settle £2.2m compensation claim with Alan Curbishley
The Times
Gary Jacob

West Ham United have agreed to pay Alan Curbishley £2.2 million to end their
dispute over his departure from the club 17 months ago. Curbishley, who
resigned after Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney, the defenders, were
sold to Sunderland against his wishes in 2008, won his case against the East
London club for constructive dismissal in November. The decision to conclude
the case was taken by David Sullivan, the West Ham joint-chairman, who met
Curbishley two weeks ago. Sullivan wants to put an end to the problems
hanging over from the previous regime after buying the club with David Gold
last month. He plans to tackle the outstanding money owed to Sheffield
United from the Carlos Tévez affair next.
Curbishley resigned in September 2008 and started a case for constructive
dismissal, claiming £3 million in compensation. A Premier League managers'
arbitration tribunal dismissed a counter-claim by the club for the cost of
employing Gianfranco Zola, Curbishley's successor, and Steve Clarke, the
Italian's assistant, but had yet to decide on the amount of compensation to
award Curbishley. West Ham had offered £1.2 million plus costs recently. The
52-year-old has set a target of returning to Premier League management. "It
has taken many months to conclude this case but I am proud of my record at
West Ham, which included a win ratio of 40 per cent, after initially keeping
the club in the Premier League and a tenth place finish in my only full
season in charge," he said. "I would like to thank David Sullivan for acting
quickly."

West Ham have paid Dean Ashton a year's salary, in accordance with his
contract, after the former England forward was forced to retire because of
an ankle injury in December. The club have lodged a compensation claim
against the FA because the original injury was caused by a tackle by Shaun
Wright-Phillips, during a training session while the pair were on
international duty in August 2006.

The FA's insurer has yet to respond, but the governing body has dismissed
Ashton's chances of making a successful claim. Ashton has also consulted a
lawyer about the possibility of claiming compensation from Chelsea, for whom
Wright-Phillips played at the time.

West Ham have said that they are aware of the pledges made by the Government
and the London 2012 Organising Committee regarding the Olympic Stadium,
which they would like to be their future home. Tessa Jowell, the Olympics
Minister, reiterated that an athletics track must be part of the legacy.
West Ham are drawing up various options, which will be presented to the
Olympic Park Legacy Company, possibly as early as April.

West Ham launch new legal action over Tevez affair - Exclusive
Published 23:00 17/02/10 By James Nursey
The Mirror

West Ham's new owners have launched a legal challenge to claw back cash
after being unhappy with the handling of the Carlos Tevez affair. Joint
chairman David Sullivan and David Gold vowed to take drastic action after
inheriting a £110million debt at Upton Park last month. They have already
introduced widespread cost-cutting by axing annual retainers to match-day
ambassadors and ending club credit cards and mobile phones. And now the
Hammers' hierarchy have issued formal legal proceedings against the club's
former solicitors and the FA. Sullivan feels West Ham were badly advised by
their old legal team during the Tevez saga. And he is also trying to recoup
funds from the FA after Dean Ashton broke his ankle on England duty in
August 2006. Hitman Ashton subsequently had to retire at 26 just 18 months
into a five-year contract at Upton Park. While the Tevez fiasco landed the
club with a fine of £5.5million and compensation plus costs of around
£19million to Sheffield United. But Kieron Dyer has been given a final
chance to prove his fitness before possible retirement beckons for the
injury-prone midfielder. Dyer, 31, has only started five times for West Ham
since a £7million move from Newcastle in August 2007 on a four-year deal
worth £70,000-a-week. Both the club and player have given serious thought to
a settlement for the midfielder to retire. But Dyer is now back in light
training and has not given up playing again this season. Meanwhile, West Ham
have paid up the compensation claim made against them by ex-manager Alan
Curbishley, who left in September 2008 before winning a constructive
dismissal case. Curbishley had asked for £3.2million plus £500,000 costs and
although the final settlement was undisclosed, he is believed to have
received in excess of £2million.

Striker Terry Dixon has been named in the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad
to take on Armenia in the Tallaght Stadium on 3 March. The 20-year-old, who
has overcome a series of serious knee injuries over recent seasons, makes
his return to the Ireland Under-21 set-up over three years after making his
debut at this level. Dixon made his Under-21 debut against Belgium in 2006,
the same year as he was named in the Republic of Ireland senior squad for
their match against Chile. After suffering from a series of injuries, Dixon
has recently returned to action at West Ham United, signing for the London
club in February 2009. Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Don Givens
believes the striker's return to fitness should see him put a difficult
couple of years behind him. Givens said: "I have watched Terry at West Ham
and he seems to be beginning to show the sort of form that made him
stand-out so much before his injuries. 'He has been terribly unfortunate
over the last few years but he seems to be putting that behind him now.
'There is no doubt that he is a great talent. He was out of the game for a
long time but it is great to see him back playing and I'm really looking
forward to having him involved with the squad.' Givens named an 18-man squad
for the match against Armenia, with Stephen Gleeson (suspended) the only
forced absentee. Ian Daly, who plays his club football in Greece with Aris
Thessaloniki, is named in the Under-21 squad for the first time, having
previously represented his country at Under-19 level.
