Wigan Athletic v West Ham United
Barclays Premier League
DW Stadium
Saturday 12 September 2009
3pm
Referee: Alan Wiley

Introduction

• West Ham United travel to Wigan Athletic looking for a third unbeaten game
away from home this season against a Wigan side that have yet to pick up a
point at their renamed DW Stadium in the 2009/10 campaign. The match comes a
day after the first-year anniversary of Gianfranco Zola's unveiling at the
Boleyn Ground.

• The Hammers sit in eleventh place of the fledgling Barclays Premier League
standings with four points from three matches, while Wigan are a point
adrift in 17th spot - although the Latics have played a game more than their
visitors from London

• Wigan are the only club that West Ham have faced in each of the last six
seasons, as they were also in the Championship in 2003/04 and 2004/05 before
gaining promotion to the top-flight in May 2005.

• This is the 13th league meeting between the two sides. West Ham have won
six, Wigan have won four and there have been two draws.

• There has never been a goalless draw between the clubs.

• The Hammers have lost on only one of their six visits to the former JJB
Stadium - a 1-0 reverse on 2 February 2008 courtesy of Kevin Kilbane's
first-half header. West Ham have won four and drawn one of the five other
trips they have made to Wigan.

• The last visit on 4 March 2008 was notable for Carlton Cole scoring the
club's goal of the season on 34 minutes in a 1-0 victory. The stunning
strike was followed by a sending-off for the match-winner three minutes
later after a seemingly harsh second yellow from referee Stuart Attwell. Lee
Cattermole was dismissed for Wigan seven minutes after half-time.

The lineups were:

Wigan Athletic: Kirkland, Melchiot, Boyce, Bramble (Watson 78), Figueroa,
Valencia, Brown (Scharner 64), Cattermole, N'Zogbia, Mido, Zaki, (Rodallega
64)
Subs not used: Pollitt, Edman, Sibierski, Kapo

West Ham United: Green, Neill, Tomkins, Upson, Ilunga, Collison (Spector
78), Noble, Parker (Lopez 88), Kovac, Di Michele (Savio 75), Cole
Subs not used: Lastuvka, Sears, Payne, Stanislas

West Ham United

• West Ham United will look to make it three unbeaten away games in a row
this season with the trip to face Wigan Athletic on Saturday. A fortnight
ago, the Hammers drew 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers, having previously won 2-0 at
Wolverhampton Wanderers on opening day.

• Gianfranco Zola's side have had two home games this season. They lost 2-1
at home to Tottenham Hotspur on 23 August - with Carlton Cole putting the
Hammers in front - before needing extra time two days later to see off
Millwall 3-1 in the Carling Cup second round. The Lions were defeated thanks
to two goals from Junior Stanislas and a decisive third from Zavon Hines.

• West Ham United did their second Premier League 'double' of the season
against Wigan Athletic in 2008/09. They won 3-1 at the Boleyn Ground on the
opening day of the season and then won 1-0 on 4 March. Fulham were the other
team to lose home and away to the Hammers.

• West Ham United's biggest away win at Wigan came in the shape of a 3-0
Premier League success at the JJB Stadium on 28 April 2007. The Hammers'
goals that day came courtesy of Luis Boa Morte, Yossi Benayoun and Marlon
Harewood.

• Robert Green has yet to concede a goal away from home this season. The
last time he was beaten on his travels with West Ham was in the 76th minute
of the 3-1 defeat at Everton on 16 May 2009. That means he has gone 194
minutes without conceding on the road.

• Green has played 91 consecutive Barclays Premier League games - more than
any other player in the top-flight currently. All being well, he will reach
his unbroken century away to Hull City on Saturday 21 November.

• Three players, Mark Noble, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole have got on the
league scoresheet for the Hammers so far this season.

• Speaking about his opposite number Roberto Martinez, Gianfranco Zola said:
"He's not got an easy task, because I believe the team is playing
differently from how they used to, so he'll have to be patient in imposing
his ideas. But he's a good manager and he's done exceptionally well last
year in Swansea. I'm sure he will get his team playing his own way -
hopefully not tomorrow but in the next few weeks! He is a good manager and
he will do well."

• The Hammers finished last season in ninth in the Barclays Premier League
with 51 points, a place and two points higher than they managed in the
previous season.

• Carlton Cole was West Ham's leading scorer last season with ten Premier
League goals, one in the FA Cup and one in the League Cup.

• The Hammers sit on 700 Premier League points, with the draw at Ewood Park
last time out taking them to that milestone.

• Should any of new recruits Alessandro Diamanti, Fabio Daprela, Davide
Ferrari and Manuel Da Costa figure, they will become the 800th player to
represent West Ham.

• West Ham have a Carling Cup third-round tie to look forward with a trip
back to the north-west on Tuesday 22 September to take on Bolton Wanderers.

Last time out

West Ham United
Barclays Premier League, Saturday 29 August 2009

West Ham United: Green, Faubert, Upson, Collins, Spector, Parker, Noble,

Subs not used: Kurucz, Gabbidon, Tomkins, Hines, Nouble

Wigan Athletic

• Wigan's last home win came on Sunday 24 May - the final day of last season
- and a 1-0 home success against Portsmouth thanks to Hugo Rodallega's goal.

• Wigan have had ten different players shown a yellow card in all
competitions this season. No player has been cautioned twice.

• Wigan Athletic have lost both their home matches in the Barclays Premier
League this season as part of a four-game losing streak in league and cup.
They lost 1-0 at home to Wolves on 18 August before succumbing 5-0 to
visitors Manchester United four days later. However, they did start the
season with a 2-0 success at Aston Villa.

• They were eliminated in the Carling Cup second round with a surprise 4-1
reverse at Blackpool and then lost 2-1 at Everton in their last top-flight
outing on 30 August, when Paul Scharner had put them in front.

• .Roberto Martinez said: "I've been very impressed with West Ham and I
think they now have a very successful formula on the pitch. There is a
mixture of experienced and young players at the club, and they have a very
attacking and brave style of play. So the game on Saturday is going to be an
open affair and exciting to watch, and I'm looking forward to see how we
approach it."

• Wigan's largest-ever home win over West Ham was also the Latics' only
victory over the Hammers on home turf. Kevin Kilbane netted the only goal of
the game in a 1-0 success, heading past Robert Green in added-time at the
end of the first half, on 2 February 2008.

Team news

• Alessandro Diamanti could make his debut after a stunning bow for the
reserves in midweek. On Tuesday night, the Italian forward freshly signed
from AS Livorno Calcio scored a free-kick in each half of a 6-0 win against
Birmingham City at the Boleyn Ground.

• West Ham have Valon Behrami fit again after he played for nearly an hour
against Birmingham. The Switzerland midfielder had not figured since
suffering cruciate knee ligament damage in a 1-0 home win against Manchester
City on Sunday 1 March 2009.

• Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole all returned from England
duty on a high after a 5-1 win against Croatia, that saw Green and Upson
play the whole game, confirmed the nation's place at the 2010 FIFA World
Cup. Last Saturday, Green again played the whole game, Upson got 65 minutes
and Cole appeared for the final eleven minutes of a 2-1 success over
Slovenia.

• Kieron Dyer and Luis Jimenez are being assessed for minor muscle issues.

• Jack Collison has been training after being forced out of international
duty with Wales with a slight calf problem. Danny Gabbidon did play the full
90 minutes of a 3-1 defeat by Russia in Cardiff that ended any lingering
World Cup dreams.

• James Tomkins and Junior Stanislas both figured for England Under-21s in
the past week. Tomkins played the full game in each of the 2-1 win in FYR
Macedonia and 1-1 draw in Greece, while Stanislas only took part in the
first match when he set up Freddie Sears - on loan at Crystal Palace - for
the Young Lions' equaliser.

• Portuguese centre-back Manuel Da Costa may take the departed James
Collins' place in the squad, having arrived on 31 August from ACF Fiorentina
in a deal that took Savio in the other direction. He played the full 90
minutes in midweek. Da Costa will challenge Tomkins and Gabbidon for the
right to partner club captain Upson.

• Young full-backs Davide Ferrari and Fabio Daprela, 17 and 18 respectively,
may travel, having also made their competitive bows for the club against
Birmingham. Ferrari had only just received international clearance from
Italy while Daprela had not long been back after two Under-19 friendlies
with Switzerland against Georgia.

• Both Ferrari and Daprela are predominantly left-footed and may
particularly get a chance to compete with Jonathan Spector for the left-back
berth if Herita Ilunga fails as expected to recover. It is not thought the
Congolese defender will be available after the jaw injury he suffered on
Saturday 15 August at Wolves, although there is hope he will return to take
on Liverpool next Saturday.

• Spector earned his 19th and 20th caps for the United States in their 2010
FIFA World Cup qualifying wins against El Salvador in Utah and away to
Trinidad and Tobago. He played the full 90 minutes in both matches at
right-back as the US took pole position in CONCACAF qualifying for the
finals in South Africa.

• Radoslav Kovac was an unused substitute for the Czech Republic in their
2-2 draw in Slovakia and 7-0 home win against San Marino that kept alive
their World Cup dreams.

• Only Dean Ashton (ankle) and Luis Boa Morte (knee) are not training with
the first team at Chadwell Heath. Ashton is working on a personal programme
on an injury he suffered almost exactly a year ago in training - on Monday
15 September 2008 - and there is no date set for his likely return. Boa
Morte is recovering from surgery and is set to stay in his native Portugal
to focus on his rehabilitation until October.

• Reserve-team forward Terry Dixon has overcome his knee problems but is not
yet thought to be ready to take part in matches as he has not played
competitively since March 2008.

•.Wigan are trialling Cameroon midfielder Modeste M'Bami, with the
26-year-old a free agent since leaving Marseille. The club allowed Michael
Brown to leave for Portsmouth on transfer deadline day.

• Hugo Rodallega only arrived back at Wigan on Friday after spending the
week on international duty with Colombia. Should he not be considered ready
for action, France international Olivier Kapo could be drafted into the
starting eleven.

• Jason Koumas, who announced his retirement from international football
with Wales in midweek, could return to the starting lineup after missing the
defeat at Everton with a muscle problem.

Zola welcomes pair
WHUFC.com
Valon Behrami and Alessandro Diamanti are both in Gianfranco Zola's squad
for the trip to Wigan
11.09.2009

Gianfranco Zola has expressed his delight at welcoming Valon Behrami and
Alessandro Diamanti into his West Ham United squad for Saturday's Barclays
Premier League trip to Wigan Athletic. Behrami returned from six months out
with a serious knee injury in Tuesday's 6-0 reserve-team win over Birmingham
City, while Diamanti scored twice in the same game on his competitive debut
for the club. Zola has named both in his squad for Saturday's visit to the
DW Stadium, although he admitted the pair could start on the substitutes'
bench against Roberto Martinez's side. He said: "Behrami played the other
day with the reserves and did very well. He's getting fitter and fitter. I
am pleased that he might be involved tomorrow. It's good to have him back
because he's such an influential player for us. He'll probably be on the
bench. "Diamanti is doing okay. So far he's been quite good straight away.
He's one of those players who you can appreciate straight away, but he will
certainly need a little bit of time because the Premier League is not easy
and he will need some time to adapt. He is on the right way. The boy has got
qualities."
New signings Manuel Da Costa and Switzerland Under-19 defender Fabio Daprela
are also likely to travel to Lancashire after impressing against Birmingham.
Zola and his players will be hopefully of maintaining their unbeaten away
record at Wigan, who have made an uncertain start to 2009/10 under new
manager Roberto Martinez. The Spaniard, who played for the Latics in the
late 1990s before enjoying a successful two-and-a-half year spell as manager
of Swansea City, scored a 2-0 opening-day win at Aston Villa. Since then,
however, Wigan have had a difficult time, losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers,
Manchester United and Everton and being dumped out of the Carling Cup by
Championship outfit Blackpool. Despite his recent struggles, Zola believes
the 36-year-old has the qualities to turn Wigan into a force to be reckoned
with. "He's not got an easy task, because I believe the team is playing
differently from how they used to, so he'll have to be patient in imposing
his ideas. But he's a good manager and he's done exceptionally well last
year in Swansea. "I'm sure he will get his team playing his own way -
hopefully not tomorrow but in the next few weeks! He is a good manager and
he will do well."

Hines looking to Wigan
WHUFC.com
Two goals in three first-team appearances and a reserves hat-trick have
propelled Zavon Hines forward
11.09.2009

Zavon Hines is hoping his midweek hat-trick with the reserves will have
fired him firmly into the thoughts of Gianfranco Zola for the weekend trip
to Wigan Athletic. Hines is in great form with his treble in a 6-0 defeat of
Birmingham City following on from his league debut as a late substitute
against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 23 August. In between, the 20-year-old
forward struck a fine goal in the Carling Cup second-round defeat of
Millwall. He has forged an instant partnership with Frank Nouble and the
pair were both among the goals during pre-season as well.

Gianfranco Zola was naturally present in midweek, a fact not lost on the
forward who was called up by Jamaica last season for a friendly
international. "I want to keep showing the manager what I can do. I have
been on the bench for the first team in all our games so far this season and
then coming on in some of the games and trying to do my best. That is my
aim, to come on and hopefully score goals to help the team."

In total, Hines has two goals from three cameo appearances for the first
team including last season and he is confident he has what it takes if given
another chance at the DW Stadium on Saturday. He said: "I feel very sharp. I
have been doing a lot of one-to-one work and extra work after training and I
feel good and just want to be scoring and doing as well as I can. Hopefully
I can bring this on and into the first team now as well.

"In past I have not scored as much as I have wanted in the reserves and it
is something I have been working on in training. I want to score more and
the Birmingham match was something that shows if you work hard enough, it
can work. "It was very good to get a hat-trick and as a striker, when a
match has a lot of goals, you want to be the one that is scoring them."

The homegrown Hammer also paid tribute to the experienced heads around him
in training and matches. He was particularly grateful to link up with Valon
Behrami, with the fit-again midfielder at the heart of the action against
Birmingham. "It's brilliant to have Valon back on the pitch and see the new
boys, I enjoyed playing with them. They are all good experienced players and
it is good for the rest of us, because you can learn a bit of them as well."

Faubert thanks the fans
WHUFC.com
Julien Faubert has spoken about his gratitude after being named SBOBET
player of the month
11.09.2009

Julien Faubert has thanked West Ham United's supporters after being named
the SBOBET Player of the Month for August 2009 in a poll of whufc.com users.
The 26-year-old France full-back has enjoyed a fine start to the new
campaign, helping the Hammers to victories over Wolverhampton Wanderers and
Millwall and an impressive goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. Faubert said
he had been inspired by the support of the club's fans, and told WHUTV he is
aiming to maintain his good form over the coming months.
"I feel okay and I'm very happy about this, but it's not the end for me," he
said. "I want to play a lot of games and win a lot of games for West Ham. I
am very happy and I want to say 'Thank you' to the fans and to everybody."

Having switched to his preferred right-back berth from his former position
on the right wing, the 26-year-old said the sound of supporters chanting his
name had given his confidence a huge boost. "I feel more confidence and when
you have the fans pushing you, you can run a little bit more and you don't
feel the fatigue. I am very happy about this. When I heard my name I was
very happy. It's good for my confidence and it's good for the team."

MATCH PREVIEW
After Wigan's fairytale start with an opening-day win against Aston Villa,
life has got tough for new manager Roberto Martinez. With a 5-0 hammering at
the hands of Manchester United, defeat to Everton and an embarrassing exit
to Blackpool in the League Cup, Martinez's north-west neighbours have all
tested his mettle.

But scoring enough goals has been a concern for Gianfranco Zola's team, with
Carlton Cole shouldering much of the workload. The acquisition of Alessandro
Diamanti, who scored twice from free-kicks in a reserve game this week,
could provide a sharper cutting edge. Zola's second season in charge of the
Hammers has begun fruitfully enough, plundering all four of their points
away from home. They have been just as prosperous at the DW Stadium,
claiming three wins in the past four seasons.

For Martinez, transfer deadline day was a frustrating affair. Ex-Swansea
player Ferrie Bodde reportedly topped his list, but no deal was brokered so
Martinez must hope he has done enough tinkering to stabilise his floundering
team.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

• West Ham did the double over Wigan last season and have a good record at
the DW Stadium, winning three of the four Premier League matches.

• The sides have only met 12 times in league competition, eight of those in
the top-flight (overall record: Wigan W4, West Ham W6, D2)

• In this fixture last season Carlton Cole scored the only goal but was sent
off for two bookable offences, along with Lee Cattermole.

Wigan

• Roberto Martinez is aiming to avoid his fourth consecutive league defeat.
Wigan have lost nine of their last 12 league games.

• If they lose or draw, it will be the first time they will earn fewer than
five points from their first five Premier League games.

• The Latics are struggling at home: only Bolton and Portsmouth have also
lost two games on home soil already this season.

• Wigan have conceded six goals at the DW Stadium this season. Only Everton
with seven have conceded more at home.

• If he plays, Mike Pollitt could make his 500th career league appearance.

• Wales' Jason Koumas could make his 50th league appearance for the club
after retiring from international football earlier this week.

West Ham

• Zola's side are the only Premier League team apart from Manchester City
not to have conceded an away goal this season. Including last season, they
have kept three clean sheets in their last four away league games.

• The Hammers have won just three of their last ten league games, but are
yet to lose on their travels this season.

• Scott Parker could make his 50th league appearance for the Hammers. Kieron
Dyer is just two goals short of hitting 50 club goals in his career.

West Ham close in on Franco deal
BBC.co.uk

West Ham are set to give Mexico striker Guillermo Franco a medical ahead of
signing him on a free transfer. Franco's contract with Villarreal expired
during the summer and he was set for a move to Estudiantes in his home
country before that fell through. But the 32-year-old, who played for
Mexico at the 2006 World Cup, has now been drafted in by Upton Park boss
Gianfranco Zola. "I'm sure he is a player who can make a good
contribution," said Zola. Franco has been on international duty with Mexico
and scored in the 3-0 win away to Costa Rica on Saturday. He is expected to
sign a one-year deal with West Ham but will not be available for this
weekend's game at Wigan. "I'm happy because I'm going to an English team
and I believe that is a good opportunity for me," said Franco.

Wigan Athletic Preview
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 10th September 2009
By: Greg Mansell

GIANFRANCO ZOLA's side head North this weekend to take on Wigan Athletic at
the DW Stadium. It is a stadium where the Hammers have enjoyed some good
fortune in recent years, winning four of their previous five visits and the
fixture computer may well have been kind to east Londoner's once again.

Quite simply, Wigan are in atrocious form.

Defeat to West Ham on Saturday would make it four defeats from their opening
five fixtures, surpassing their worst start to a Premier League season.

This is not to mention their humiliating Carling Cup exit away to League One
Blackpool having been thrashed 4-1.

It has certainly been a baptism of fire for new manager Roberto Martinez.

The ex-90s Wigan crowd favourite was plucked from Championship Swansea City
this summer after Steve Bruce ended his four-year spell as manager accepting
an offer from Sunderland and was widely considered one of the game's
brightest young managers.

However, an easy summer it was not.

The right-wing quality of Ecuadorian Antonio Valencia was immediately lost
to Manchester United for £17m, while Bruce returned to Wigan to rob Martinez
of the battling Lee Catermole in a £6m deal.

Coupled with the departures the previous season of Wilson Palacios to Spurs
and Emile Heskey to Aston Villa the previous season (as well as manager
Steve Bruce) and Wigan have lost crucial foundations to their recent and
relative success in the Premier League.

Martinez has been allowed to spend just a paltry £3.7m on summer recruits in
response by chairman Dave Whealen (and we thought Zola had it bad) of which
the star signing has been striker Jason Scotland at £2m from previous club,
Swansea.

Despite all the obvious handicaps, Wigan provided the shock of the opening
day by beating Aston Villa at Villa Park by two goals to nil thanks to a
spectacular opener from Rodalega and a smart finish from Jason Koumas for
the winner.

However, rather than mark the start of a moral boosting lift to their early
season form, Wigan have promptly lost their next four competitive games.

Next up, came newly promoted Wolves to the DW, fresh from our comfortable
win at Molineux 3 days previous. However, it was Mick McCarthey's men
leaving with all three points thanks to a solitary header by Andy Keogh in
front a meagre 16,000 fans (4,000 of which were Wolves).

Even worse was to come for Martinez as Champions Manchester United rolled
into town and promptly ran riot. A Rooney brace, as well as goals from Nani,
Berbatov and Owen sealed their embarrassing defeat.

If losing by five goals at home to the Champions was embarrassing, then
losing 4-1 to local neighbours Blackpool some 4 days later was downright
humiliating with Martinez summarizing his Wigan side "individually and
collectively handed Blackpool" the result.

Last time out, Wigan would appear to have tightened up somewhat, losing only
narrowly to Everton 2-1 at Goodison but moral would again have taken a
bashing as Paul Scharner had put them ahead as late as 57 minutes before
almost immediately relinquishing the lead to a Louis Saha strike.

Leighton Baines then slotted home a soul-destroying last minute penalty to
ensure it 4 straight defeats in all competitions.

Bad form, like good form, does come and go. But West Ham fans travelling
North should feel disappointed not to take all 3 points from a side so
clearly in the doldrums.

With England duo Green and Upson returning in high spirits, a solid
defensive performance is to be expected, while also expect the current
midfield of Noble, Collison, Parker, Stanislas and Jiminez to be on their
toes as competition hots up following the return of Valon Behrami.

The Swiss road-runner returned for the reserves mid-week but after only
playing an hour is unlikely to be risked by Zola, preferring another reserve
outing before a subs bench return next week to Liverpool.

The same players will also know Zola could well toy with the idea of
trimming the midfield by naming another forward alongside Carlton Cole
following the arrival of both Allessandro Diamanti from Livorno and
Guillermo Franco via Villareal.

Diamanti is likely to be on the bench for Wigan after a dazzling display for
the reserves during Behrami's return, in which he scored two free-kicks in
the 6-0 demolition of Birmingham City.

Franco, however, having only arrived in London on Friday is unlikely to have
either the necessary fitness or Premier League clearance to be involved.

Wigan Athletic Vs West Ham United – Dare Ya!!
Admiral Lard - Thu Sep 10 2009
West Ham Online

Wigan Vs West Ham, one of our least played fixtures, yet one of our more
unusual set of results. Over all the record stands at P14 W8 D2 L4 F20 A14,
(courtesy West Ham Stats) well in West Hams favour and yet it only tells
half the story.

At the Boleyn Ground the results are even with 3 wins apiece and 1 draw with
both teams scoring 8 goals. At the JJB or DW or, if today's news is anything
to go by, the SFA investigation Stadium, West Ham are totally dominant with
5 wins a draw and 1 solitary win for Wigan, the goals 12-6 in favour of West
Ham

Now I don't want to jinx anything, particularly as I have a ticket for the
game but this fixture has become that very rare thing, a West Ham away
banker…….. Needless to say that myth is likely to explode in very short
order.

There has been much unnecessary complaining with regard to West Ham's
activity in the transfer market over the summer, however we have some bright
names on our books and a bizarrely encouraging display by the reserves on
Tuesday night has brought further hope to all.

Carlton Cole will be raring to go having failed to make the bench on
Wednesday at Wembley. Matthew Upson and Robert Green gave very fine accounts
of themselves though badly let down by former Hammer, Glen Johnson, for the
Croat's goal, their displays' were near faultless.

With Valon Behrami making a 60 minute appearance and looking as if he'd
never been away, Zavon Hines collecting a hatrick, new boy Alessandro
Diamanti scoring from a couple of fine free kicks GFZ has the perfect
problem that all managers want, who to leave out and on the bench?

With Kieran Dyer on his way back the midfield is packed with potential
stars, there will be some disappointed players when the squad is announced
on Friday.

Wigan Athletic have got off to a dreadful start despite beating Aston Villa
away on the opening day. Subsequently they have lost at home to Wolves, were
hammered 5-0 at home by Man United then humiliated by 4 goals to 1 at
Blackpool in the league cup and lately lost 2-1 at Everton, who themselves
are short of good form.

For Wigan manager, Roberto Martinez, this has been a baptism of fire. You
have to wonder at the wisdom of leaving upwardly mobile Swansea City for the
difficulties of "post Bruce" Wigan. We will find out what they are made of
this Saturday as they desperately need to stabilise or face the prospect of
a bleak winter playing constant catch up with the also-rans.

Despite our defeat to Tottenham this has been a satisfactory start by West
Ham and the encouraging signs and signings of recent weeks has filled me
with renewed hope after a strange pre season. I am going for a West Ham win
and with a little style too.

Plaudits for Faubert
KUMB.com

Julien Faubert has been voted as KUMB.com's Player of the Month for August
2009. The French full-back had looked like leaving the club during the
summer having been packed off to Real Madrid on loan for the second half of
last season after failing to impress following a £6million switch from
Bordeaux. But with no interested parties willing to take a gamble on the
once-capped French international this summer Faubert remained at the Boleyn
where he has effectively replaced former club captain Lucas Neill at
right-back.
Since being remodelled as a full-back Faubert has given a string of
consistent performances in both pre-season and United's first four games of
the season, from which two wins and a draw have been forthcoming. The
26-year-old took 33% of your votes this month, pushing Jack Collison - who
received 23% - into second place. Third place this month went to the James
Collins (13%), who is now an Aston Villa player having been sold on transfer
deadline day.

Franco 'agrees' one-year contract
Forward does not want to commit beyond World Cup

Mexico striker Guillermo Franco claims he has agreed a 12-month deal with
West Ham after turning down a two-year deal at Upton Park. The former
Villarreal player is a free agent and Sky Sports News reported earlier on
Friday that he was set for a medical with the Hammers. It was also revealed
that Franco was holding talks regarding a one-year agreement, and the
forward has now confirmed that story. But the 32-year-old also claims that
he rejected a two-year offer from West Ham because he does not want to
commit beyond the 2010 World Cup. "The contract is until June even though in
principle West Ham wanted it to be a two-year contract," the 32-year-old
said before flying to England.
"We wanted it only to be a year. Then we will see, above all because the
World Cup is coming up and we hope to qualify. "After the World Cup we will
see what will happen."
Franco is also against the idea of upsetting his family if they do not
settle in England. "I also decided that it would only be one year because as
a family we will see if we adapt, if we like it and if it turns out as we
are thinking or not," he added. "So the most logical option was to sign
until June and that's what we've sorted out with West Ham. "I'm happy
because I'm going to an English team and I believe that is a good
opportunity for me."

SKY BET odds: Wigan 5/4, Draw 9/4, West Ham 9/4
One to Watch: Manuel Da Costa

Wigan Athletic welcome West Ham United to the DW Stadium in the Premier
League on Saturday as two foreign managers with similar philosophies clash.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez and Hammers chief Gianfranco Zola both make no
secret of the fact that they like their teams to play with style and
finesse. If the two teams can match their manager's beliefs, the
post-international break meeting could be a match of passing football played
with a passion. But external factors will of course play a part as Wigan
have lost four games out of five in all competitions since upsetting Aston
Villa on the opening day of the season and Martinez, who took over in the
summer, will want to stop the rot.
Zola, meanwhile, would probably also happily sacrifice aesthetics for three
points, with his side not having won in the league since succeeding at
Wolves in their first match of 2009/10. Martinez has an almost a fully-fit
squad as forward Olivier Kapo has returned to training after a knee ligament
injury sustained in pre-season, but he will take some time to get match-fit.
Midfielder Jason Koumas has recovered from a muscle problem which kept him
out of the Latics' last-gasp defeat at Everton nearly a fortnight ago.
Martinez will assess the fitness of his international players, particularly
those who travelled long distances like Hondurans Hendry Thomas and Maynor
Figueroa. Zola will be without star left-back Herita Ilunga, who has
sustained a fractured cheekbone, while there are concerns over midfielder
Kieron Dyer's hamstring. Midfielder Luis Boa Morte is out with a knee
problem, as is versatile Switzerland international Vedran Behrami. James
Collins, moved to at Aston Villa during the transfer window, so Manuel Da
Costa, signed from Fiorentina, could make his debut at centre-back. New
striker Alessandro Diamanti, an arrival from Livorno, may also feature,
while Mexico forward Guillermo Franco claims he is set to join the Hammers.

Possible starting XIs
Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Scharner, Bramble, Figueroa, N'Zogbia, Koumas,
Diame, Thomas, Gomez, Rodallega.

West Ham: Green, Faubert, Upson, Da Costa, Spector, Noble, Parker, Collison,

Guillermo Franco has been speaking about his impending move to West Ham. As
revealed by KUMB.com yesterday, Mexican international Franco is on the verge
of completing a one-year deal with United - but says he may be willing to
extend his stay further. "The contract is until June even though in
principle West Ham wanted it to be a two-year contract," he said. "We wanted
it only to be a year. Then we will see, above all because the World Cup is

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola is looking forward to working with Guillermo
Franco. The Mexican striker is set to sign a one-year deal with The Hammers
after agreeing terms with the club. He is available on a free transfer after
leaving Spanish outfit Villarreal. "He is doing his medical, he is a good
player," Zola told Sky Sports News. "He is a striker, and international

Wigan v West Ham: Preview
September 11, 2009
Manchester Eveniung

KEEPER Chris Kirkland and midfield star Jason Koumas return to action for a
Wigan Athletic team chasing a first win of the new season at home. Kirkland
and Koumas, two of Wigan's senior professionals, were injured and did not
play at Everton last time out. Latics boss Roberto Martinez will start both
against West Ham in what is an important game for Wigan. Kirkland has been
hindered by a back spasm problem but Martinez has reaffirmed his bold belief
that a fully fit Kirkland can challenge to be part of the England World Cup
squad in South Africa. Martinez said: "England are very strong in every
department except for goalkeepers and Chris is a contender. "We know we
have a quality keeper who could be destined to be in the squad. He just
needs to play regularly. "His big strength is his frame and physical
presence. But he's coming to terms with what he has to do and has possibly
got to stop pushing himself to the limit when not fully fit. "Chris is a
winner and he naturally gets frustrated when he is not involved." Martinez's
preparations have been disrupted by international calls. Some players could
only be returning to the UK later today. Martinez added: "I have mixed
feelings about international breaks and it's not easy playing a Premier
League match when players return just a day before. "We know we need a win
against West Ham. We've competed in our opening four games. I would have
been disappointed had we drawn at Everton so to lose late on was extremely
frustrating. "We now need to take on the responsibility of being at home and
perform accordingly. "We have the players to play how I want and this squad
has huge character and players who really care. "Against Everton, we knew we
would be under pressure. We have the physical strength to compete but we
also need to rely on our skill. I stress the need for us to be strong at
home because this is where our success will come from.
"I'm looking forward to the West Ham game because it will be played at a
high intensity but we need to win and confidence will come with results but
I am happy with the squad and I know we have the ability to score goals and
to create chances."
Forward Olivier Kapo has returned to training this week after a knee
ligament injury sustained in pre-season but will take some time to get

kept him out of the Latics' defeat at Everton nearly a fortnight ago.
Martinez will assess the fitness of his international players, particularly
those who travelled long distances like Hondurans Hendry Thomas and Maynor
Figueroa.

West Ham have concerns over midfielder Kieron Dyer's hamstring. Valon
Behrami is back in contention after recovering from a knee problem, while
recent signings centre-back Manuel Da Costa and forward Alessandro Diamanti
are also included in the squad. Longer-term absentees Dean Ashton (ankle),
Luis Boa Morte (knee) and Herita Ilunga (fractured cheekbone) are still
unavailable.

Wigan Athletic (from): Kirkland, Melchiot, Scharner, Bramble, Figueroa,
N'Zogbia, Thomas, Diame, Koumas, Gomez, Rodallega, Edman, Boyce, Watson,
Cho, Sinclair, Scotland, King, McCarthy, Pollitt.

West Ham United (from): Green, Upson, Spector, Collins, Parker, Noble,
Jimenez, Faubert, Collison, Stanislas, Cole, Kurucz, Gabbidon, Tomkins,
Hines, Nouble, Dyer, Da Costa, Diamanti, Behrami.

Key opponent: Carlton Cole - powerful forward usually causes problems

Prediction: Wigan 1 West Ham 1 - Wigan need to steady the ship and this is a
good chance to do it

Alessandro Diamanti to debut against Wigan but Valon Behrami and Herita
Ilunga remain sidelined

West Ham's new striker Alessandro Diamanti has dropped straight in to
Gianfranco Zola's squad for tomorrow's Premier League clash at Wigan.
Diamanti, who cost West Ham £6million from Italian club Livorno, scored two
spectacular free-kicks on his debut against Birmingham reserves on Tuesday
night and is set to start on the substitutes' bench.
However, Valon Behrami's return could be delayed by another week. Behrami
also made a comeback in the 6-0 win over Birmingham but Zola may play him
in another reserve team match next week before deciding whether he is ready
for a return against Liverpool. Also missing from tomorrow's line-up is
full-back Herita Ilunga, who has not yet fully recovered from the broken jaw
he sustained on the opening day of the season at Wolves. England Under-
defender James Tomkins looks certain to fill the void left by James Collins
and Zola admitted today it was a tough decision to part with the Welsh
international defender, sold to Aston Villa on transfer deadline day for £5m
to help finance the Diamanti deal. Zola said: 'James is a player who has
done really well for me and it was painful for me to let him go.
'Unfortunately we needed someone to go out so we could get a striker to come
in. I explained that to him. 'He has gone to a good club though, they have
treated him very well and I hope he does for them what he did for us.
'It is tough when you have a guy who was very much integrated with the other
players and who is playing well but as long as you have nice and intelligent
people like James, then it makes it easier to deal with things like this.'
Zola completes his first year as West Ham manager next Tuesday and remains
optimistic the club's financial position will soon improve. "I am realistic
about the situation," he said. "It has been like that since last year and we
are trying to cope as best we can. 'Hopefully it is not going to be for
ever. I am sure something positive will happen to this club because it
deserves that." Mexican striker Guillermo Franco meanwhile, was expected to
arrive in London today to discuss a move to West Ham. Franco, is a
non-contract player after leaving Spanish club Villareal.

Aussie demands put Black Cats off.

SUNDERLAND have dropped their interest in bringing Australia international
Lucas Neill to the Stadium of Light. Black Cats manager Steve Bruce
admitted talks had started between the club and the 31-year-old, but it now
appears a move is unlikely. The Wearside outfit are reported to have been
put off by the former Blackburn and West Ham defender's wage demands. "We
did speak to the player about the possibility of coming to Sunderland,"
Bruce told the Sunderland Echo. "But as things stand, nothing's going to
come of that and nothing will unless circumstances change."
Neill is reportedly asking for around £40,000 pounds a week, which is a
significant wage cut from what he received in his last contract at Upton
Park. But with the World Cup less than nine months away, the Australia
defender may need to consider reducing his demands in order to find a club

Martinez praise for Zola
Wigan boss full of admiration for Hammers chief
Last updated: 11th September 2009
SSN

Roberto Martinez has revealed his admiration for Gianfranco Zola. The Wigan
chief foes head to head with the Italian on Saturday as West Ham travel to
the DW Stadium. Martinez could not hide his admiration for counterpart Zola.
"I admire Gianfranco massively because he never moans - he has had to deal
with a lot of problems at the club - and he has found a winning formula,"
said Martinez. "The greatest strength of a manager is to adapt to any
conditions you have in front of you and Gianfranco has done that. "I would
say West Ham and Wigan are very similar in the way they play and their
approach. "They are probably a little bit more advanced in what they are
trying to do than we are but the way West Ham plays is the right way and I'm
sure it will be a great advert for Premier League football."
Martinez is looking for his Wigan side to bounce back to form following a
poor run and he thinks West Ham is the perfect game. "Games like West Ham
are what we need at the moment; games at home where we have to take the
responsibility," he added. "West Ham are going to be a hard team to play
against because they are attack-minded and I admire the way Gianfranco Zola
plays the game. "They have a great mixture of youth and experience in their
squad and every game they have played in they have been very competitive and
been difficult to beat. "We know we will have to be at our best. "We have
been competitive in all our games but there are small decisions and
situations that we have to control a bit better. "We need to make sure we
get the points our performances deserve - that is the next step."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wigan Preview
West Ham Till I Die

Gianfranco's team selection or the Wigan match is going to be eagerly
anticipated. The fact that Behrami is back in contention gives him a real
dilemma in midfield. Behrami is apparently very keen to start, but I imagine
that will be a bit too much and he will start on the bench. Mark Noble and
Jack Collison will be only too well aware that their places are under
threat. Or does Zola intend to play Behrami at right back? By all accounts
Faubert has equipped himself well in that position so far, so it would seem
unfair to drop him.

All eyes will be on Aleesandro Diamanti, who scored a brace for the reserves
earlier in the week. A starting three of Cole, Diamanti and Jimenez seems to
be a given. At the back, Ilunga is still not fit, so Spector will continue
to deputise. There have been rumours on other sites that Da Costa might be
given a start and Upson rested, but I just can't see that. Tomkins will come
in for his first game of the season, replacing James Collins. So I expect
the team to look like this…

Green, Upson, Tomkins, Spector, Faubert, Noble, Parker, Collison, Diamanti,
Jimenez, Cole. Subs: Kuprecz, Da Costa, Daprela, Kovac, Behrami, Stanislas,
Hines.

Wigan haven't got a home point so far this season, so you know what that
means…

Prediction: 0-2

West Ham sign Mexico striker Guillermo Franco: Hammers also tracking starlet
VerrattiBy Sportsmail Reporter

Daily Mail

Mexico striker Guillermo Franco claims he has signed a one-year deal with
West Ham, bringing to an end Gianfranco Zola's long search for a new
forward. Franco, 32, was out of contract following his release from
Villareal in the summer and had appeared close to joining Argentinian outfit
Estudiantes last week. But the striker has opted for a switch to Upton Park,
where he is expected to be a back-up to first-choice forward Carlton Cole.
'Everything is sorted out, I fixed it this morning and I am going to West
Ham,' Franco said.
'I am very happy. I am going to the Premier League, which was one of my
wishes, and I am glad it has been finalised.' The Hammers had spent all
summer attempting to bolster their strikeforce and failed with a
deadline-day bid to sign Benjani from Manchester City. But the club vowed to
continue their efforts to bring in more firewpower, despite the closure of
the transfer window. "Gianfranco Zola and [technical director] Gianluca Nani
are discussing the possibility of an out-of-contract striker joining the
club," a West Ham statement said last week. Speculation had linked West Ham
with a move for Mark Viduka, but the signing of Franco appears to end their
search for more firepower.
Franco, who was born in Argentina, made his name with hometown club San
Lorenzo before moving to Monterrey, where a successful four-year spell
persuaded him to switch nationality and represent Mexico. He joined
Villareal in 2006, scoring 14 goals in 81 appearances during an
injury-plaged spell in Spain. The veteran forward has scored six goals in 18
appearances for Mexico, returning to action for the national team in
Saturda's 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Costa Rica.
West Ham are keen on Pescara starlet Marco Verratti. The 16-year-old
midfielder has already made his senior debut and is being followed by AC
Milan, Inter and Roma.

Gianfranco Zola happy to reach first anniversary with West Ham
Published 23:30 11/09/09 Mike Walters
The Mirror

Gianfranco Zola blew out the candle on his first anniversary as a manager
last night - admitting he nearly didn't make it past the L-plates. The
Little Master takes West Ham to Wigan after surviving the Icelandic bank
crash which brought the club's owners to their knees and a slump which made
him fear for his job at Upton Park last autumn. But Zola is now head of a
proud new Bubbles dynasty in which Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton
Cole are in the England squad and battling to follow the Hammers' holy
trinity of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters into World Cup legend
next year.
Striker Cole has yet to score this season, but his meteoric improvement
under Zola is the Sardinian sorcerer's single biggest achievement since he
took over from Alan Curbishley 12 months ago. And after taking the Hammers
to the brink of Europe, Zola reflected on the 90 minutes which changed the
mood of his 12 months as an honorary East ender. He said: "For me the best
moment of my year here was winning 4-1 at Portsmouth last Christmas - that
was the turning point because we were in a very delicate situation but after
that result we went on an exceptional run. "The lowest point was last
October - the whole month was a disaster because we couldn't win a game and
that was a testing time for me. "But I want to share any achievement with
the club because Gianluca Nani and Scott Duxbury have been brilliant. they
believed in the project, they never gave up on the idea of keeping the best
players and actually trying to improve the team. "They also supported me in
those moments where they could have thought, 'Maybe we made the wrong choice
and we'll have to pick up another manager.' "You have to believe me when I
say there is a lot of understanding between me, Gianluca and Scott. Before
they do anything, they ask me - they don't tell me they are selling a
player. "They explain the situation and, although it was very painful to
sell a player like James Collins in the transfer window recently, it was
necessary even though he has done very well for me. "Obviously when things
are not going well you have doubts, but at the end of the day my enthusiasm
far outweighs the doubts, so I've kept going. I kept believing in the way I
want West Ham to play and we came out very well from that situation. "I
think the last year has been a big achievement considering I was new to the
job. Don't forget I was a footballer and I had only worked for two years as
an assistant with Italy's Under-21 side. "So everything was new for me and I
had to learn quickly - but I was lucky because I had some fantastic people
on my side like Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen. "Who knows what the next year
holds? Football is so unpredictable and you have to be prepared for
anything. But my idea of managing a football team will not change - I will
always try to make it entertaining for the players and the people. "And if
there are difficult times ahead, I'll work even harder to get through them.
It doesn't worry me because I know my quality and I'm ready to face
anything."

Why Is the Daily Mirror So Crap?

Spot the error in this morning's Mirror article about Gianfranco Zola's
first anniversary at the club. Why on earth does anybody ever buy the

have written about West Ham over the last few weeks has been risible.
Presumably the 25 yard half volley that Cole scored against Spurs was a
figment of our imaginations.

Wigan must get nasty, says Roberto Martinez
Published 23:30 11/09/09 By MIrror Football
The Mirror

Roberto Martinez has ordered his Wigan troops to get nasty in an attempt to
kick-start their season. Despite winning praise for their silky passing game
under Martinez, the Latics have slumped to defeat in the last four games.
Wigan's Spanish boss now wants his players to roll up their sleeves and get
tough - starting today (SAT) at home to West Ham. Martinez said: "We will
never rely on our physical ability to win games. But off the ball you have
to be more physical because you need the physical strength to compete in the
Premier League. "There's huge character within the squad and the results
hurt. It's how you react when you are under the cosh that matters." Wigan
have conceded 11 times in the last three outings yet Martinez insists there
is not too much wrong with his side. But with back-to-back games against
Arsenal and Chelsea to follow, he has labelled the visit of West Ham a
must-win encounter. The former Swansea boss added: "We haven't got the
points our performances have deserved in the last three or four matches.
"Apart from the 5-0 defeat to Manchester United, we have been in every
single game. "There are still small details to be ironed out. It shows we
are still growing and still adapating to what's needed in the squad. "We
need to make sure that the DW Stadium is a tough place to come for visiting
teams. It's a must-win game for us. "West Ham are as brave a side as you are
going to see in the Premier League. They have a mixture of youth and
experience. "They rely on their attacking threat to win games and we are
very similar."

GIANFRANCO ZOLA claims Carlton Cole can pen another chapter in West Ham's
proud World Cup history. Hammers striker Cole is eying a summer trip to
South Africa after England booked their place at the finals by demolishing
Croatia. Cole did not feature at Wembley but is in contention for a place in
Fabio Capello's 23-man squad after impressing last season. West Ham still
pride themselves on supplying the backbone of England's triumphant World
Cup-winning side of 1966 – Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters –
and Zola believes Cole can leave his own mark in the history books if he
maintains his fine start to the season. Zola, who takes his team to Wigan
today, said: "Carlton deserves all the credit because he is the one who has
done the work. "Carlton has worked very hard on his game and on his
mentality and has produced some results. Now, all I can say about Carlton is
that it all depends on him, because he has all the qualities. "He is strong,
he is quick, he is technically very good so, if he keeps focused on what he
is doing, then of course he can be there. Capello is keeping an eye on him.
"I can see improvements but I'm sure he knows that, if he wants to play for
England, he will have to work even harder. "People who are playing in his
position are also doing well, so he knows he has to work and I am there to
help if I can." Zola celebrates his one-year anniversary at Upton Park today
but admits he feared he would not even last three months. He lost nine of
his first 16 games last season before inspiring a recovery that led to a
top-half finish.

Martinez is bold over
The Sun
By DAVID FACEY
Published: Today

ROBERTO MARTINEZ has hailed West Ham as the bravest team in the Premier
League. And the Wigan boss has ordered his team to be just as fearless. The
Spaniard is an unashamed admirer of West Ham's attacking style under
Gianfranco Zola and predicts today's clash will be a real thriller. He
explained: "West Ham are a classic example of a side that is making the
system fit the players, something we are trying to do ourselves. "Gianfranco
has a great mix of youth and experience, and he is allowing them to play
with real adventure. "I think he is doing a great job there. "They are as
brave a team as you will see, the bravest in the Premier League. "But we can
be a bold team too and I want us to take them on in an open game. This could
be a terrific ]match, a wonderful advert for Premier League football. "We
have shown we can score goals in open play, and we are playing opponents who
can do the same. "I admire Gianfranco massively because he never moans. "He
has had to deal with a lot of problems at the club and he has found a
winning formula. "The greatest strength of a manager is to adapt to any
conditions you have in front of you and Gianfranco has done that."
Martinez admits he has not been so happy about his team's defending in their
past three matches. They held Manchester United for almost an hour but then
fell apart to lose 5-0.
Then they were humbled 4-1 at Blackpool in the Carling Cup before conceding
a last-gasp penalty to lose 2-1 at Everton. He added: "We have to defend
better, from set pieces especially, and if we get that right we will win
games. We have to make the DW Stadium a fortress. "And if we play with the
character we showed at Everton, in addition to the creativity we've already
shown, we can do that. "As I said, I'm a big admirer of the West Ham style -
but this is a must-win game for us. "Since we won at Aston Villa on the
opening day we've let a few points slip away and we have to get back on
track quickly. Martinez has used the international break to try to sort out
a few problems. He added: "We need to be able to correct the things we
haven't done well. "It has been a positive break from that point of view. It
is just a matter of getting people understanding each other and we have
worked on communication. "We have been competitive in all our games but
there are small decisions and situations that we have to control a bit
better. "We need to make sure we get the points our performances deserve.
"Games like West Ham are what we need - games at home where we have to take
the responsibility."

Great night for Green
WHUFC.com
Robert Green celebrated in his own unique style after helping England reach
the 2010 FIFA World Cup
10.09.2009

While he would have been forgiven for sipping the odd glass of champagne,
Robert Green instead celebrated helping England reach the 2010 FIFA World
Cup with a mug of green tea. The West Ham United and England No1, who is
often seen enjoying a cup of his favourite tipple at Chadwell Heath, played
his part as Fabio Capello's side swept aside Croatia at Wembley to book
their passage to next summer's tournament in South Africa. The 29-year-old
has become Capello's first-choice goalkeeper in recent months, and has no
intention of relinquishing his jersey ahead of the finals. Green told WHUTV
he believed England were full value for their comprehensive 5-1 win over
Slaven Bilic's side and their place in South Africa. "We'll see whether I'm
involved next summer, but the team has qualified and that's the main thing.
I think, the way we played, we justified our qualification. "I've got a nice
quiet cup of tea, I'll relax tonight and I'll get my head down and go into
work."

Having seen his dream of appearing at the 2006 World Cup in Germany dashed
by a serious groin injury, Green was happy to have played an important role
in helping England qualify this time around. Against Croatia, the West Ham
stopper enjoyed a quieter than expected evening, not being called upon to
make a serious save until midway through the second half. "That's the name
of the game and that's international football. You're maybe not going to
have too many things to do, but when you're called upon, you've got to do it
and you've got to do it right. "That's what I've learned against Croatia and
that's what I've learned from the Slovenia game and the Andorra game -
you've got to remain focused."

Green is also remaining fully focused on ensuring his form remains at a
sufficiently high level to earn him a place in Capello's World Cup squad
come next summer. "The World Cup is a long way away. I'm sure the manager
will be looking in the remaining games at some other lads and also at how we
do between now and the end of the season. In that respect, it's just
pleasing to be involved, pleasing to get games and on a night like tonight,
it's why you put the hours in. It was a great occasion for everyone
involved."

Upson all smiles
WHUFC.com
Matthew Upson was a proud man after helping England book their place at the
World Cup finals
10.09.2009

Matthew Upson was a very happy man after helping England to reach the 2010
FIFA World Cup with a 5-1 thrashing of Croatia at Wembley. The West Ham
United defender was at his assured and confident best as Fabio Capello's men
secured their place in South Africa with two matches to spare. Upson enjoyed
a quieter evening than many experts had predicted as a rampant England tore
into Slaven Bilic's side, taking a lead within eight minutes that they never
looked like relinquishing. Former Hammer Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard
both scored twice before Wayne Rooney added a late fifth. Upson told WHUTV
of his determination to ensure he is part of Capello's squad for next
summer's showpiece. "I'm delighted. It was great to have qualified so early.
It was a fantastic effort from all the players and the staff and a really
good commitment to the cause. "I hope to keep my place. It's always nice to
get the opportunity to play and I really enjoyed it. I'm on a good run at
the moment so I've got to keep my form going and keep improving and I'll be
involved next summer in South Africa."

Upson has become a fixture in Capello's squad since the Italian took charge
in February 2008. His own good form, combined with injuries to Rio Ferdinand
and John Terry has led to regular starts in England's perfect qualification
campaign, which has seen them win all eight matches they have played. The
30-year-old admitted he had expected a tougher test from the Croats, who
needed to win to have any chance of denying England an automatic passage to
the finals. "It was possibly easier than we thought it would be. I thought
we started with such a great tempo and we pressed the ball high and got
about them. We were really aggressive and got at them. Aaron Lennon was
outstanding on the right and caused them all sorts of problems and we came
in at half-time and could have been five-up, so it was fantastic and
probably one of our best performances of this campaign. "I've had some good
nights before, but it was great to be involved in such a great team
performance and a great atmosphere at Wembley and be a part of it. I really
enjoyed it."

Despite his achievement, with a young son at home and an important Barclays
Premier League fixture at Wigan Athletic on Saturday to prepare for, Upson
has no time to celebrate. "No I won't celebrate. I'll just go home and have
a nice rest and get some sleep and get in nice and early for training for a
warm-down!"

SBOBET and Macron
WHUFC.com
West Ham United have agreed two major partnerships that will provide
'significant revenue' to the club
10.09.2009

West Ham United are delighted to announce the signing of new long-term
agreements with SBOBET and Macron. Principal partners SBOBET, the Isle of
Man-licensed and regulated online sportsbook and casino operators, have
extended their agreement with the club until the summer of 2013. The SBOBET
brand will appear on all official replica kit and training wear used by
Gianfranco Zola's squad, as well as being represented on all club media
platforms.

Leading Italian kitwear manufacturers Macron will be the club's official
technical partner for three years from the start of the 2010/11 season.
Having recently joined forces with Serie A side SSC Napoli and working
already with Portuguese league leaders SC Braga, Macron were keen to make
West Ham United a major part of their growing portfolio of top-flight elite
European clubs.

West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said both deals, the terms of which are
undisclosed, would be of huge benefit to the club. He said: "In these
challenging times, I am pleased we have secured our principal and technical
partners on long-term contracts. These contracts ensure over the coming
years that the club has secured significant revenue to assist in the
continued improvement of Gianfranco's playing squad. "Commercially the club
is going from strength to strength and these partnerships provide a strong
foundation for the club to continue to grow and achieve success. SBOBET and
Macron are dynamic companies and they are very much part of our vision for
the future."

SBOBET originally joined forces with West Ham United in December 2008,
impressing the club with its understanding of the long-standing commitment
to the Bobby Moore Fund, which reached a new level with the signing of a
formal three-year partnership. The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK
(Registered Charity No. 1089464) logo will continue to be carried on all kit
worn by the club's Academy sides as well as on child replica strips. Founded
in 1971, Macron is based in Crespellano, near the Italian city of Bologna.
In recent years, the company has rapidly expanded its portfolio of
high-profile clients, and as well as Napoli also provides kit for Serie A
clubs Bologna FC 1909 and Cagliari Calcio 1920. Macron also manufactures
high-quality playing and training wear for basketball, handball, volleyball
and rugby. It has links throughout Europe and operates under the message -
work hard, play harder.

Bondz leading by example

Reserve-team captain Bondz N'Gala was all smiles after netting a spectacular
goal in midweek
10.09.2009

Forest Gate-born Bondz N'Gala was wearing the broadest smile in east London
after scoring a sublime goal in West Ham United's 6-0 reserve-team win over
Birmingham City.
The 19-year-old could barely contain his delight after curling a superb
25-yard shot into the top-corner, celebrating the goal with an unforgettable
jig in front of the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand. After leading the Hammers to
a fine first Barclays Premier Reserve League South victory of the season,
the reserve-team captain was all smiles when interviewed by fellow Forest
Gate native Tony Cottee on WHUTV. "For my goal, the ball has gone to the
edge of the box, Josh Payne has picked it up and passed to me. I've turned,
seen the 'keeper off his line and just gone for it. I've always dreamed of
scoring a goal like that and I'll be lucky to score another one in my career
like that."

When asked what his celebratory dance was all about, N'Gala admitted his
sheer elation had got the better of him. "Well, I haven't done a celebration
for a while, so I thought I'd enjoy it!"

After being named as an unused substitute for the Barclays Premier League
visit of Stoke City last December, N'Gala has continued to make good
progress as part of Alex Dyer's reserve team. Having impressed at both ends
of the pitch in front of the watching Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke
against Birmingham, the teenager has now set his sights on making his
first-team debut. "I think I'm doing alright. Being made reserve-team
captain is always an honour, so I hope to carry on progressing and push on
into the first team. It's definitely a dream of mine to be part of the first
team, to break through and play regularly. I'd like to do that at some point
this season. "It's definitely going to be difficult to break in, but I can
only learn from players like Matty Upson and James Tomkins, who is also
doing well. It can only help my game."

Alessandro aiming high
WHUFC.com
Alessandro Diamanti is determined to be a success for West Ham United
10.09.2009

Alessandro Diamanti cannot wait to show West Ham United supporters what he
can do after announcing his arrival with a virtuoso performance for the
Hammers reserve team.
The 26-year-old, who has joined the club from Serie A outfit AS Livorno
Calcio, scorted two sublime free-kicks in Tuesday's 6-0 Barclays Premier
Reserve League South thumping of Birmingham City at the Boleyn Ground. Now,
the Prato-born forward told WHUTV that he is aiming to carry that
match-winning form into the Barclays Premier League. "To play here was an
excellent feeling," he said. "I was very excited and couldn't wait to show
my qualities. The team did well and played a good game, which I'm very happy
about."

Having played in Serie A with Livorno, Diamanti - whose name literally
translates as 'Diamonds' - is eager to become a jewel in the Premier League,
which is commonly held to be the best league on the planet. He is already
eyeing Saturday's trip to Wigan Athletic. "I came to England because the
Premier League is the most beautiful championship in the world and I cannot
wait to start the season with the first team. I am very excited about that
and want to have this challenge."

Diamanti has settled in quickly at Chadwell Heath, helped in large part by
team-mate and fellow Italian speaker Valon Behrami. The Switzerland
midfielder has been acting as Diamanti's chauffeur, driving the 26-year-old
to and from training, as well as his translator. "My taxi driver has two
very nice cars, he is never late and is a very comfortable driver to ride
with! Seriously, though, I want to thank Valon a lot because he has helped
me a lot to join with the team and to settle in."

Fit-again Behrami himself believes his new friend possesses the quality to
be a huge hit with West Ham's supporters. He said: "He showed his quality
against Birmingham. It was a great game for him and he's a very, very good
player. We have to wait because it is not easy to come in England and get
used to playing a very different game. He did very well and will do great
things for us. "He is a very, very good new signing and I say that not just
because he is my friend, but because he is a quality player and he is
exactly what we need. That's what the manager wanted to sign - a quality new
player - and I am very happy and everyone is happy with his arrival."

Ladies seek goalkeeper

West Ham United Ladies are on the lookout for a new first-team goalkeeper
10.09.2009

West Ham United Ladies are looking for a first-team goalkeeper to represent
the club in the FA Tesco Women's Premier League Southern Division. The
Hammers, who have made an unbeaten start to the 2009/10 season, train twice
a week at the club's Chadwell Heath training ground. Work commitments mean
No1 Paris Smith will not be available regularly this season, opening up the
chance for a new goalkeeper to stake her claim for the jersey. The chance to
represent West Ham is an excellent opportunity for a goalkeeper who already
has first-team experience at a similar level, or a young player who has
recently graduated from an Academy or Centre of Excellence. Interested
goalkeepers should contact either club secretary Colin Roache on 07711

Hammers set to sign striker
KUMB.com

Guillermo Franco is set to join West Ham after agreeing a short-term deal
with the club. The 32-year-old Argentinian-born Mexican international is set
to fly into London within the next 48 hours to rubber-stamp his move to the
Premier League. A free agent since being released by Villarreal at the end
of last season, Franco - who will sign to sign a one-year deal with an
option to extend - had looked set to sign for Argentinian side Estudiantes
before the Hammers stepped in with an improved bid. The 6'1" striker, who is
set to appear for Mexico at next summer's World Cup Finals made his name
with Argentinian club San Lorenzo, for whom he scored 23 goals in 94
appearances. Upon moving to CF Monterrey in 2002 he also became a Mexican
citizen and made his debut for his country three years later. After three
years in Mexico, Franco moved to Spain to play for Villareal, where he spent
the next three seasons making 81 appearances and scoring 14 goals. Despite
having been without a club since the end of last term, Franco has retained
his place in the Mexican national team and featured most recently last
weekend in Mexico's 3-0 win in Costa Rica, a result that all but guaranteed
their place at next year's Finals.
West Ham's search for a striker has continued unabated since it was made
clear that Marouane Chamakh would not be completing a move from Bordeaux. As
KUMB.com revealed last week, Gianluca Nani and Gianfranco Zola spent last
weekend scouting abroad. Despite failing to persuade Manchester City's
Benjani to move south on loan for the season on transfer deadline day, talks
with a number of potential targets have since taken place - including former
Leeds and Newcastle striker Mark Viduka. However the terms of Franco's deal
will be far more favourable to West Ham than a move for the former
Australian international, who commanded wages in excess of £50,000 per week
during Leeds United's heyday several years ago. It is unlikely that the
Mexican will sign in time to featue against Wigan this weekend, but another
new signing - Alessandro Diamanti, who scored a brace in Tuesday's 6-0
reserves win over Birmingham - is set to make his first start for the club.

Diamanti raring to go
West Ham new boy relishing challenge

Alessandro Diamanti is looking forward to making his West Ham debut after
joining from Livorno. The Italian striker did not complete his transfer in
time to be available for the goalless draw with Blackburn on 29th August and
has been settling into his new surroundings for the past fortnight during
the international break. He scored two stunning free-kicks in a reserve
match at Upton Park on Tuesday and hopes he can keep his form going. "To
play here was an excellent feeling. I was very excited and couldn't wait to
show my qualities," Diamanti told the club's official website. "The team did
well and played a good game, which I'm very happy about."
Diamanti admits he has been an admirer of English football for some time and
he is relishing the prospect of playing with and against some of the best
players on the planet.
"I came to England because the Premier League is the most beautiful
championship in the world and I cannot wait to start the season with the
first team," he explained. "I am very excited about that and want to have

West Ham poised to complete signing of Guillermo Franco
West Ham United are finally to end their search for a new striker with the
expected signing of Mexican international Guillermo Franco.
Telegraph.co.uk
By Jason Burt
Published: 2:34PM BST 10 Sep 2009

An agreement has been reached with the 32 year-old who left Villarreal at
the end of last season. Franco is out of contract and therefore can be
signed for free even though the transfer window has closed. Franco was one
of several strikers being tracked by West Ham as they attempted to provide
more attacking firepower for manager Gianfranco Zola.
Sport on television A bid was accepted by Manchester City for Benjani
Mwaruwari, but that deal could not be concluded in time with the Zimbabwean
stalling, while talks took place with Mark Viduka, also out-of-contract
after leaving Newcastle United in the summer. It had appeared that Franco,
born in Argentina but a naturalised Mexican, would return to the Argentinean
club Estudiantes – the current Copa Libertadores champions – but now West
Ham have persuaded him to join them instead. Franco had made it clear that
he would prefer to remain in Europe after his contract with the Spanish club
Villarreal – for whom he made 84 appearances, scoring 14 goals – ended, but
he was due to join Estudiantes after Wednesday's international against
Honduras. However West Ham have now intervened. Franco won his 18th
international cap for Mexico and scored his sixth goal for his country
against Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifier – their first victory in four
ties - earlier this week. He moved to Europe in 2006, after playing for
Mexico in the World Cup, having spent seven seasons with Monterrey, scoring
63 goals. He won the league with the club in 2003 and ended the following
season as the leading scorer in Mexico.
A talented striker, Franco will provide support for Carlton Cole with West
Ham already having signed Chilean international Luiz Jimenez and Alessandro
Diamanti to play in a 4-3-3 formation either side of a main target man. Zola
has high hopes for Jimenez – who has made an impressive start to his West
Ham career – and Diamanti, who signed for £6 million from the Serie A side
Livorno. The 26 year-old scored with two free-kicks in the 6-0 reserve team
rout of Birmingham City earlier this week and is contention to make his
debut away to Wigan Athletic this Saturday. However it is unlikely that
Franco will be signed in time for that match.
West Ham remain interested in signing Marouane Chamakh and have held talks
with the Moroccan international after being given permission to speak to him
by his club, Bordeaux. A £7 million transfer was in place but this could not
be finalised before the close of the transfer window. The likelihood is that
Chamakh will either see out the final year of his contract and leave at the
end of the season or move in January. Alternatively he could sign a
pre-contract agreement with a club at the turn of the year and is likely to
want to see how Bordeaux fare in the Champions League this season.

West Ham handed financial boost by lucrative double contract

West Ham United, the English Premier League club, has signed Italian firm

Fabio Capello gives me hope I can be England No 1 at World Cup, says West
Ham stopper Robert Green
By Sportsmail Reporter

Daily Mail

Robert Green admits England boss Fabio Capello's policy of picking players
in form and not on reputation gives him hope he can have a major part to
play in the World Cup next summer. The West Ham keeper has started England's
last five internationals - including the decisive qualifier with Croatia on
Wednesday - in place of the injured David James.
James is still thought to be Capello's No 1, after playing every one of his
initial 13 games at the helm, despite now being 39. But Green is determined
to try and maintain his standards with West Ham to stay in Capello's plans.
He said: 'It is really pleasing to play. At the moment I am enjoying it. If
the manager thinks otherwise, so be it. I've played a number of big games
and important games for him. 'I feel more comfortable playing among the
lads, and they are looking to me for more and to produce more for the team.
'It is a big stage and one for big hearts, and I've really enjoyed stepping
up to play.' 'I will do my utmost in every game I play, and the manager will
pick who he sees fit to take the next game. 'But the difference is he plays
players who are in form. That is the difference - from the back to the front
of the team. 'If you are in form, you will play - and if you are playing
well, you know you will carry on doing so. 'What you do from each game is
just learn. You do your utmost in each game and you treat success and
failure in the same way.'

Mexico striker Guillermo Franco is set to sign for Premier League side West

11.09.09 | tribalfootball.com

Alessandro Diamanti was thrilled with his reserve-team brace on debut for
West Ham United in midweek. "To play here was an excellent feeling," he told
WHUTV. "I was very excited and couldn't wait to show my qualities. The team
did well and played a good game, which I'm very happy about."

West Ham's Behrami full of praise for Diamanti
11.09.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami is impressed by new teammate
Alessandro Diamanti. The Swiss told WHUTV. "He showed his quality against
Birmingham (reserves). It was a great game for him and he's a very, very
good player. We have to wait because it is not easy to come in England and
get used to playing a very different game. He did very well and will do
great things for us. "He is a very, very good new signing and I say that not
just because he is my friend, but because he is a quality player and he is
exactly what we need. That's what the manager wanted to sign - a quality new
player - and I am very happy and everyone is happy with his arrival."

Delight for England duo
WHUFC.com
Robert Green and Matthew Upson helped England secure their place at the 2010
FIFA World Cup
09.09.2009

West Ham United duo Robert Green and Matthew Upson helped England to secure
qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with a 5-1 victory
over Croatia on Wednesday. Green and Upson were both named in Fabio
Capello's starting eleven as England laid the ghosts of their ill-fated 2008
UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign to rest at Wembley.
Goalkeeping errors saw the Three Lions fail to reach last summer's
tournament in Austria and Switzerland, but Hammers No1 Green helped to
ensure their was no repeat as England won for the eighth time in eight
qualifying matches. Croatia, managed by former West Ham defender Slaven
Bilic, who scored three goals in 54 games for the Hammers between February
1996 and May 1997, were unable to secure the win they needed to have any
chance of delaying England's qualification.
Another ex-Hammer, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard both scored twice,
while Wayne Rooney was also target as England bettered the 4-1 victory they
scored in Zagreb a year ago. Lampard opened the scoring from the penalty
spot on eight minutes before Gerrard nodded home Aaron Lennon's deep
right-wing cross ten minutes later. Croatia tried in vain to make a game of
it after half-time, but Lampard's second - his 20th international goal -
settled matters on 59 minutes, heading home Glen Johnson's cross, before
Gerrard nodded Rooney's lob past the stranded Vedran Runje. With England
four goals up, Green was finally called into action, saving well from Niko
Kranjcar and Mario Mandzukic, only for Eduardo Da Silva to slam the ball
into the roof of the net to deny the 29-year-old a clean sheet 18 minutes
from time. At the other end, Runje's misery was complete on 77 minutes when
his mis-kick allowed Rooney to score England's fifth.
Elsewhere, Danny Gabbidon played for 74 minutes as Wales were beaten 3-1 by
Russia at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. Defeat left John Toshack's side
fourth in Group 4, with nine points from eight games. Russia remain second,
a point behind leaders Germany.
Radoslav Kovac was an unused substitute as the Czech Republic thrashed
minnows San Marino 7-0 in Uherske Hradiste. The Czechs' victory enhanced
their chances of qualifying from Group 3. With two games remaining, they
trail second-placed Northern Ireland, who only have one match left to play,
by two points. Kovac and his international colleagues host fourth-placed
Poland and Northern Ireland in their final two group fixtures on 10 and 14
October respectively.
Jonathan Spector was the final Hammer in international action on Wednesday,
with the US travelling to Trinidad and Tobago for a vital World Cup
qualifier at midnight UK time.
The Americans went into the game sitting second in the six-team CONCACAF
group, with 13 points from seven matches. Leaders Honduras also have 13
points, with Mexico and Costa Rica just behind on 12. The top three
finishers qualify automatically, with the fourth-placed side facing the
fifth-placed South American finisher in a two-legged play-off.

Alex Dyer has paid tribute to the fans that cheered on the reserves in their
6-0 win over Birmingham City
09.09.2009

Alex Dyer has thanked the West Ham United fans who came to the Boleyn Ground
to watch his reserve side thump Birmingham City 6-0.

Some 1,250 packed out the lower tier of the West Stand and saw Allesandro
Diamanti score a brace on his debut, Zavon Hines grab a hat-trick and Valon
Behrami play nearly an hour on his return from a knee injury.

"It was nice to play a reserve-team game at Upton Park and it was great of
West Ham to let the people come in for free," Dyer told WHUTV. "It was good
for all of the school kids to come in and see their stars. Overall it was a
good night. The senior boys came in and helped the young lads and it just
made everyone raise their game a little bit."

The Bobby Moore Fund is one of five charities nominated to be the official
charity partner to the Football League this season. The charity, established
by West Ham and England legend Moore's second wife Stephanie in 1993 has
since raised more than £12million in order to help fight the battle against
bowel cancer - a fight Bobby himself lost at the age of just 51. Along with
the Care of Police Survivors, Everyman, Help for Heroes and Marie Curie
Cancer Care charities the BMF - whose logo is represented on West Ham's
junior replica kits - has been nominated to become the governing body's
official partner for the 2009/2010 season.
In order to decide which two charities should be submitted to a deciding
panel of Football League board members, visitors to football-league.co.uk
are being asked to vote for the organisation which they deem most worthy of
winning.

In order to cast your vote, simply scroll to the bottom of the page and

The five nominees

Care of Police Survivors

Care Of Police Survivors (COPS) provides support to the families of police
officers who die on duty.

Everyman

Everyman is a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of, and funds towards,
our research into prostate and testicular cancer.

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes provides direct and practical support for our injured
service personnel. Hundreds of Thousands of ordinary people are currently
"doing their bit" to help us for some incredible wounded Heroes.

Marie Curie Cancer Care

Marie Curie Nurses provide hands on care, totally free, to give terminally
ill people the choice to spend their last days at home with their loved
ones. As well as cancer patients, they also care for people with other
terminal illnesses such as heart failure and dementia.

Bobby Mooore Fund

Bobby died at only 51 years old of bowel cancer. The campaign aims to raise
awareness of the disease to reduce the risk of people getting bowel cancer
and improve the survival rates of those affected. The BMF also hopes to
raise vital funds for bowel cancer research to reduce the number of people
affected, improve detection of the disease and find new and kinder
treatments.

Claret and blue lions

West Ham are set to be well represented in tonight's vital 2010 World Cup
Qualifier for England versus Croatia at Wembley, knowing a win will secure
the Three Lions place for the finals in South Africa next summer.

Robert Green and Matthew Upson are all but assured of a place in tonight's
starting line-up, while front-man Carlton Cole will be hoping to make an
impact from the bench after recent encouraging cameos against the
Netherlands and Slovenia on Saturday.

Following excellent club form and injury to Portsmouth's David James, Rob
Green's has finally had the chance to stake a claim for the number one spot
under Fabio Capello, after years of being over looked by previous manager
Steve McClaren.

The continued exclusion of Green had prompted the former Norwich keeper to
don his now infamous 'England's number Six' goal-keeper gloves.

But a good performance tonight should at very least secure Green the number
two spot for South Africa next summer ahead of Manchester United's Ben
Foster, whose form has been erratic, while also presenting a real long-term
challenge to the injured David James.

Matthew Upson also looks set to again take his place in front of Green,
alongside captain John Terry in the centre of defence, in the continued
absence of former Hammers legend, Rio Ferdinand.

Upson has been Capello's preferred deputy when Terry or Ferdinand have been
out and a series of steady displays make the West Ham stopper another sure
bet to make the plane for South Africa, should England prevail tonight.

Carlton Cole faces a more difficult task to get game-time with Capello
likely to opt for Emile Heskey and Wayne Rooney from the off. Tottenham
Hotspur's Jermain Defoe is also in white hot club form at present and has
mounted a strong claim for a starting berth and should he fail is likely to
be represent Plan B for Capello.

However, Cole has shown in recent friendlies against the Netherlands and
Slovenia his awesome strength represents a real problem for tiring defences,
so any Hammers fans in attendance at Wembley should be disappointed not to
see three Claret and Blue representatives on the pitch together with 15
minutes to go.

Hammers defeated in youth clash

West Ham United 2

AN inexperienced West Ham under-18 side suffered a derby defeat last
Saturday after a disastrous first half performance. Missing the injured
Conor Okus and Callum McNaughton, along with Tony Brookes and Olly Lee who
were with the reserves, the Hammers struggled to come to terms with Spurs
and by half time were trailing 3-0 after two goals from Jose Paul Mpoku and
one from Kudus Oyenuga. Mpoku grabbed his hat-trick goal early in the
second half but 15-year-old Ryan Hall pulled one back for the Hammers and
then Sergio Sanchez scored a close-range header to make it 4-2. Danny
Subuola then came close to cutting the deficit even further but fluffed his
finish. Peter Loveday saved a Spurs penalty to maintain West Ham's faint
hopes of a comeback, but they were extinguished when Oyenuga netted his
second. "Tottenham were too powerful and too strong for us," said Academy
boss Tony Carr. "We were second best in most departments, but we did better
after half time and got the performance we were looking for."

West Ham: Loveday, Smith (Modelski 60), Brown, Lampe, Driver (Moncur 70),
Sanchez, Barrett, Wearen, Hall, Abdulla, Montano (Subuola 40).

Dazzling Diamanti desperate for Hammers bow
09 September 2009
East London Advertiser
By JONATHAN CLEGG

Alessandro Diamanti admits he is desperate to make his West Ham debut at
Wigan this weekend after offering fans a tantalising glimpse of his ability
with a two-goal cameo for the reserves. Diamanti curled home two free-kicks
in West Ham's 6-0 Premier Reserve League win over Birmingham City on Tuesday
night in his first appearance in a claret and blue shirt since his £4m
switch from Livorno. The 26-year-old forward was the driving force in a
dominant victory at Upton Park, which also saw teenager Zavon Hines net a
hat- trick. Now Diamanti is eager to make his full Hammers bow as he
attempts to build on an impressive start to his career in England. "I can
not wait to show my quality. Playing here is an excellent feeling and I was
very excited," Diamanti told the club's website. "The team did well and had
a good game and I'm very happy about that."
Fellow new signing Manuel Da Costa, who also played in the match, has
revealed his determination to repay West Ham for rescuing him from his Serie
A nightmare. The 23-year-old joined the Hammers last week as part of the
deal that sent Savio Nsereko to Fiorentina, bringing to an end a miserable
spell in Italy. Da Costa failed to settle in Florence after moving from
Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, where he had emerged as a promising defender
under Ronald Koeman. He made just one league appearance for the Viola before
being shipped out on loan to Sampdoria, where the centre-half again failed
to secure regular first-team football. Da Costa suffered a fresh blow when
he was omitted from Fiorentina's Champions League squad last month, but the
he is now desperate to revive his career at Upton Park. He said: "I have
spoken to Gianluca Nani and Gianfranco Zola and they have both said that
they want to give me an opportunity to relaunch my career. "They have told
me that they have confidence in my abilities and that is why I was happy to
accept West Ham's offer. "For me now the most important thing is to
establish a place in the team since I have come from a period in which I
played very little. I want to convince Zola and the technical staff that I
am a player they can count on.

Tony Cottee: Gael Kakuta affair highlights success of Tony Carr's way
East London Advertiser
09 September 2009

West Ham's reputation for producing young footballers is almost unmatched in
this country so anything affecting the development of youngsters is an
important issue for the club.
That's why this week's controversy over Gael Kakuta joining Chelsea could
have a major impact at Upton Park. The Blues have been banned from any
transfer activity until January 2011 after they were found guilty of
inducing the teenager to quit Lens and come to Stamford Bridge. Now it looks
as though the whole system of youth development will be under review and in
my view it's about time because this has been a problem for a good few
years. Football has changed so much since the Bosman ruling came in and
together with the academies system, it's completely changed the face of the
sport. The biggest outcome has been the massive influx of foreign players,
not just in this country, but in all the major leagues throughout the world.
Football is a global game now and that has trickled down into youth level.
Clubs are scouring the globe for the best young talent and trying to lure
them away from their local clubs without paying a penny. That's not right
and UEFA president Michel Platini is correct to look at bringing in a ruling
that will protect the clubs that bring through and develop young players.
Clubs like West Ham put time, effort and a huge amount of money into
bringing up players and it's not right that the biggest teams in Europe can
whisk them away for nothing. In my view, there are two simple solutions.
First, you need to ban all transfers of players under the age of 18. What
that means is that at 12 or 13 years old, a young player has got to make his
mind up about where he is going to sign and then he's got to stick with that
club. He'll do his two-year apprenticeship there and if he's good enough
once he reaches 18, he'll either sign a professional deal with that club or
choose to join another club for a transfer fee. Obviously you need to be
careful because in some ways it puts the pressure on at a younger age. We
don't want a scenario where kids as young as 12 are being harassed by agents
or clubs. The key thing has always got to be protecting the young players
and their families and you don't want to find a solution only to realise
afterwards that you've opened another can of worms. But in some ways,
forcing clubs to make earlier judgements about players might offer more
protection for youngsters.
There aren't many children at 12 years old who are considered a sure thing
because so many things can affect their development - will they grow? Will
they stay committed for football? How will they react to playing against
bigger or better opponents? The other thing that needs to be addressed is
the issue of foreign players in the academies. In my view, you should not be
allowed to sign players from abroad to play in your youth team side. Look at
Cesc Fabregas. There's no way he should be playing Arsenal because he was
developed by Barcelona. But Arsene Wenger persuaded him to leave Spain and
under current UEFA rules, he's considered a homegrown player. That doesn't
make sense. Clubs should be forced to develop British players or at least
restricted to one or two foreign players in their youth team squads. In
turn, that will protect our national teams because British kids will get
more opportunities to develop and progress at big clubs. Of course, all of
this only highlights what a fantastic job is being done by West Ham, and in
particular Tony Carr. We've already seen Mark Noble, James Tomkins, Junior
Stanislas and Josh Payne play for the first team this season and the first
three are Premier League regulars.
That reputation for playing kids and giving youngsters a chance will
continue to be a big draw for us - and if UEFA impose new rules on homegrown
players, that could be a major advantage. You can throw all the money you
like at your youth set-up - Chelsea have spent £62m on youth transfers under
Frank Arnesen without any real success - but if the infrastructure isn't
right, you won't develop top players. Ultimately it comes down to the
scouts and the youth team manager and how you bring up and bring through
your young players. Credit to Tony Carr, because we've obviously got it
right. We're able to identify the right players and coach them in the right
way, and while Chelsea and Spurs struggle to produce homegrown players, we
are consistently developing Premier League performers. Now all we've got to
worry about is holding on to them once they're in the team.

Tony Cottee was talking to Jonathan Clegg.

£100m - Hammers count the cost of Eggy's big splurge
Newham Recorder
09 September 2009

BAD NEWS seems to be so synonymous with West Ham at the moment that you may
have thought that Britain's current fall guy - prime minister Gordon Brown -
had come out in support of the club, writes DAVE EVANS. Calum Davenport,
Jack Collison's sad loss and the ugly scenes at Upton Park for the Carling
Cup clash with Millwall have put West Ham on to the news pages of the
tabloids as well as the sports pages. And so it is no surprise that the club
seemed to have stumbled into another crisis with the news that they lost a
staggering £37.4m in the year ending 2008. These accounts, published over a
year late by West Ham, paint a grim picture of the financial state of the
club, with finance director Nick Igoe describing the business strategy
during the period leading up to May 2008 as "fundamentally flawed".
The situation is made worse by the fact that the collapse of shirt sponsor
XL, which cost the club around £4m, and the out-of-court settlement with
Sheffield United over the Carlos Tevez affair, which set West Ham back
another £26m over five years, are not included on this set of accounts. Debt
may be the word of the moment, but West Ham seem to have more than their
fair share. In the previous accounts, the debts were stated as £54m, but it
seems that one year of decadence under former chairman Eggert Magnusson has
plunged that nearer to £100m. Igoe also revealed that West Ham broke banking
rules over the repayment of their debt, and only the goodwill of the banks
prevented them from more serious trouble. "The scale of operating losses and
wages caused the group to breach certain banking coven-ants in 2007-08,"
Igoe explained in the report. "Although the group's banking syndicate waived
these breaches, a business strategy which relies on the goodwill of the
group's bankers to waive covenant breaches is fundamentally flawed."
It is unclear how common this sort of practise by the banks is when dealing
with debt-ridden football clubs. West Ham's deficit of around £100m is
chicken feed compared to some Premier League teams. As of May 2008, Arsenal
owed £416m, Fulham £197m, Manchester United £699m, Manchester City £147m and
Liverpool around £300m. All of those clubs, bar Fulham, have turnovers far
in excess of that of West Ham as well as billionaire owners to make such
debts managable. When you look at some of the profligacy involved at West
Ham during this period, it is clear to see that much of the fault lies with
former owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. He put Magnusson into the hot seat and
allowed his fellow Icelander to go on a massive spending spree both in terms
of transfers and wages. Allegedly, Magnusson and chief executive Scott
Duxbury would check with Gudmundsson as to whether they could afford to
continue spending and the owner gave them the all clear, suggesting he was
funding it with his own money, when in reality he was doing it via bank
loans. It is a small leap from that to work out how the current economic
crisis in Iceland originated. "It is clear with the benefit of hindsight
that not all of the investment undertaken in the playing squad in the period
under review was prudent," Igoe continued. "West Ham purchased three
high-profile players in 2007-08 at a combined cost of £20m with total annual
wages in excess of £12m. Those players made 36 starting appearances between
them in the season."

The last part of that statement seems to be something of a red herring. The
players concerned were Freddie Ljungberg, Craig Bellamy and Kieron Dyer, and
the fact that two of them were injured for most of that season is certainly
not West Ham's fault - paying the transfer fees and the wages in the first
place certainly is. West Ham's increased salaries for players took their
wage bill to turnover rating to 78 per cent, but when you compare it to
other Premier League clubs, it is a figure that is not alarming, despite
Igoe stating that it was "unsustainable".
In the same year, West Brom, managed 80 per cent, Wigan 89 per cent with
Stoke City at a staggering 106 per cent so West Ham's figure does not seem
so out of the ordinary.
Yet it is obvious that West Ham over-reached themselves in the days of
Magnusson, and they are still paying for those mistakes today. The sales of
Bellamy, Anton Ferdinand, George McCartney, Bobby Zamora, Hayden Mullins,
Matty Etherington, James Collins and Savio have helped to recoup some money
and slash the wage bill, but at what cost to the first team? And things are
likely to get worse before they get better. The accounts for the period up
to May 2009 are already overdue, and West Ham fans must hope that there are
no more skeletons in the cupboard waiting to leap out.

Diamanti shines!
Newham Recorder
09 September 2009

WEST Ham's latest rough diamond - Alessandro Diamanti - showed more than a
glimmer of talent on his first outing in claret and blue on Tuesday night.
The £6m signing from Livorno netted two stunning free-kicks as the Hammers
battered Birmingham City 6-0 at Upton Park. Zavon Hines also enjoyed his
evening with a hat-trick, while 18-year-old skipper Bondz Ngala netted, and
Swiss international Valon Behrami made his long-awaited return after six
months on the sidelines with a knee injury. But it was Diamanti, playing in
a free role behind Hines and Frank Nouble, who really caught the eye with an
impressive display of playmaking. The 26-year-old, who is yet to play a top
flight match in his career, looked classy showing outstanding close control
and a powerful shot with his left foot. Reserve team boss Alex Dyer was also
able to award debuts to Manuel Da Costa and Davide Ferrari. Defender Da
Costa, who joined from Fiorentina as part of a swap deal for Savio Nsereko,
looked calm and composed in the Hammers defence, showing little of the
nervousness that blighted his time in Italy. And the 18-year-old Ferrari, on
a season-long loan from Brescia, looked lively in his preferred role as an
attacking right-back. Hammers' coaching staff will now monitor the fitness
of Behrami after his return to West Ham colours, but the player himself was
delighted to be back in action. "I enjoyed it a lot. For me, I've had a very
hard six months," said Behrami. "I am not scared about my injury. Now it is
up to the manager what he is thinking about me.

West Ham, Spurs target Toni again admits he could quit Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has again declared he could quit in January.
West Ham United and Tottenham are monitoring Toni's situation and he said:
"First I have to be fit again, then I am not worried. "But if my services
are not required, I will consider a transfer. I will not be a burden to the
club, though, and if I have to sit on the bench for a while I will. "But I
have a desire to play. I am a striker and I want to play for Italy at the
World Cup." Toni, who was linked with a move to England over the summer, is
contracted to Bayern until 2011 and insists he would be happy to see out
that agreement in Germany. "I am looking beyond January, since I am sure
that I will stay here," he added. "If it was up to me, I would fulfil my
contract."

Zavon Hines netted a hat-trick and Alessandro Diamanti scored twice as Valon
Behrami returned
08.09.2009

West Ham United handed Valon Behrami the perfect welcome back to competitive
action in the shape of a 6-0 Barclays Premier Reserve League South thrashing
of Birmingham City. The Switzerland midfielder, back after six months out
with a knee ligament problem, was back to his irrepressible best against the
Blues, laying on the opening goal for hat-trick hero Zavon Hines. While the
sight of Behrami bounding around the Boleyn Ground pitch was most welcome,
then so were the performances of new boys Alessandro Diamanti, Manuel Da
Costa and Davide Ferrari. Diamanti, in particular, caught the eye with a
display full of incisive passes, clever flicks and powerful shooting with
his trademark left foot - capping a memorable evening with two fantastic
free-kicks. For manager Alex Dyer, who saw his team bounce back from a 2-1
defeat at Aston Villa a week ago, the evening could not have gone much
better in front of a 1,250-strong crowd. The hosts roared out of the traps,
creating chance after chance and, in all honesty, had the match won inside
the first nine minutes.
Josh Payne had already fired narrowly wide before Behrami laid on the
opening goal for Hines after just 80 seconds, sliding a superb pass through
to the Jamaican, who cut inside his marker before lashing a left-foot rocket
inside Colin Doyle's near-post. Behrami almost repeated the trick three
minutes later, only for Hines to be denied by a last-ditch tackle from the
Blues' former England Under-21 defender Scott Dann. With Diamanti dictating
play from a free role behind the front-two of Hines and Frank Nouble, West
Ham were positively purring against a shell-shocked Birmingham. It was
Nouble who was next to threaten, seeing his shot deflected wide for a corner
before powering Diamanti's resulting flag-kick against the crossbar with
Doyle beaten all-ends-up. The second goal was not long in coming, however,
and when the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper pushed Payne's skimming
25-yarder around the post, it was only delaying the inevitable. Diamanti and
Behrami, who has been giving the former AS Livorno Calcio forward lifts to
and from training at Chadwell Heath, worked a short-corner routine before
finding Payne. The 18-year-old laid the ball to captain N'Gala, who
side-stepped a defender before curling a delicious shot into the top
right-hand corner.
Less than ten minutes old, the game was already up, but there was still so
much more to enjoy. Birmingham did threaten sporadically, though their best
chance came when Hammers goalkeeper Marek Stech saw his clearance cannon off
Jake Jervis and spin narrowly wide of the target. Having survived that
scare, Diamanti re-assumed centre-stage, sending a truly marvellous
free-kick up and over the Birmingham defensive wall and past a motionless
Doyle. Four minutes later and it was 4-0. Da Costa's 60-yard pass found
Fabio Daprela, who instantly found Nouble. The 17-year-old laid square to
strike-partner Hines, who cut inside and slotted low into the net.

Into the second half and the hosts continued where they left off. Nouble
should have added fifth seven minutes after the break following a sumptuous
build-up involving Da Costa, Behrami and Diamanti, only for the teenager to
chip his shot on to the roof of the net. Behrami's night ended to a
rapturous round of applause 13 minutes after the interval, as Dyer replaced
him with Danny Kearns. Hines completed his hat-trick three minutes later,
capitalising on a mix-up between David Joyce and Will Packwood before
lifting the ball over the advancing Doyle. On to the 65th minute and
Diamanti stole the show again, bending another superlative free-kick beyond
Doyle after Hines had been flattened by substitute Jamie Dunphy. It was a
fitting finale to an outstanding debut from the 26-year-old, who also
received a rousing ovation when he was replaced by Anthony Edgar moments
later. No doubt inspired by what he had seen from the bench, Edgar was soon
into the action, testing the busy Doyle with no fewer than three shots from
outside the penalty area, while Hines came close to netting his fourth.

Birmingham came close to netting a consolation late on, but Stech was in no
mood to be charitable, diving full-length to push Luke Hubbins' shot aside
to complete an excellent night's work.

Valon Behrami speaks of his joy after returning to competitive action for
West Ham United
09.09.2009

Valon Behrami has spoken of his joy after making a triumphant return to
action for West Ham United.

The popular Switzerland midfielder, who has been sidelined for six months
with a knee ligament injury, played for an hour before being withdrawn as
planned in Tuesday's 6-0 Barclays Premier Reserve League South win over
Birmingham City. With a broad smile and a thump or two of his hand on his
chest, Behrami acknowledged the rapturous response from the crowd as he left
the pitch.

Behrami had been back to his old self at the Boleyn Ground, endlessly
harrying his opponents and driving his own team forward at every
opportunity. The 24-year-old told WHUTV he was delighted to be back in a
claret and blue shirt.

He said: "I enjoyed it a lot. For me, I've had a very hard six months. Every
day, I had to work on my rehabilitation so it was a great feeling for me to
play in this game. It was a target for me over the last six months just to
arrive here and be fit and just to enjoy what I'm doing. It was fantastic
for me.

"This, for me, is a great day, and I hope this day never returns again and I
never have this difficult situation again like the last six months."

Behrami was part of a superb all-round performance from Alex Dyer's side,
with new signing Alessandro Diamanti netting two free-kicks and young
striker Zavon Hines grabbing a clinical hat-trick.

The midfielder was impressed with the performances of his team-mates,
including those of Hines and fellow teenagers Fabio Daprela and Davide
Ferrari, the full-backs who have recently joined the Hammers from
Grasshopper Zurich and Brescia Calcio respectively.

"It was a great game and a great team. We have a lot of young, good quality
players and that is a very good thing for this club. Every single young
player is very good and has quality. West Ham United must be happy about
this because I think we have a great future."

Having successfully come through his first competitive action since he was
injured in the Barclays Premier League victory over Manchester City on 1
March, Behrami is now eyeing a first-team comeback.

However, rather than rushing himself back, he is more than willing to allow
any decisions over his comeback to be made by manager Gianfranco Zola and
his staff.

"I don't know when I will return, but I am ready now. I am ready when Mister
needs me," he added to WHUTV. "I am not scared about my injury. Now it is up
to the manager what he is thinking about me. I can only say I am ready and
then it is a decision of the technical staff."

West Ham United reserves v Birmingham City reserves
Barclays Premier Reserve League South

Kick-off: 7pm
Boleyn Ground

FREE LIVE AUDIO COMMENTARY ON whufc.com

Full time - Well what a night at the Boleyn Ground as West Ham United
reserves put on a show for the 1,250 fans that have turned up. Alex Dyer
will no doubt have been delighted by what he has seen tonight as he builds
for the visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers next week.

90 min - A great one two between Edgar and Hines sees the former race
through on goal. He superbly chips Doyle and into the net but sadly the
referee assistant's flag rules the effort out for offside.

88 min - Well Stech seems determined to get his clean sheet as he is called
into a full stretch save from Hubbins. Birmingham win the corner but it is
wasted and the Hammers break away to give Nouble something to chase on to.
He out muscles Dunphy and only some great last-ditch defending stops him
getting in on the score sheet.

84 min - Stech is called into action as he has to show good reaction to palm
away Hawker's shot.

83 min - One last change for Birmingham, who you must give credit to as they
have kept trying. Jakub Hronec comes on for Shane Williams

77 min - He is and comes on for Ferrari, who has looked very assured when
considering this is his debut and he is only 17. Fry slots in at left-back
with Daprela moving to right-back.

75 min - I think there is something of a stunned silence around the ground
now and I would not mind guessing that the fans that have turned up tonight
are not regretting their decision! It looks as though Matt Fry may be coming
on.

72 min - Edgar comes close as he tries to curl one into the top corner, but
this time Doyle is there to turn it over.

71 min - Terry Dixon started full training last week but on this showing he
will struggle to get into this team! Still it does bode well for the rest of
the season if you can add his name to this team list.

66 min - West Ham make their second change with Diamanti makes way for
Anthony Edgar. Yet another great round of applause from the Hammers' fans
here and quite right too as Diamanti has been superb.

65 min - GOAL! Well I cannot quite believe what I am seeing here. Hines is
felled about 30 yards from goal and Diamanti steps up and smashes it in at
the near post. Two goals for the debutant there.

62 min - GOAL! Hines completes his hat-trick through sheer grit and
determination. He chased a lost cause and muscled his way onto the ball
before slotting it past Doyle

58 min - The first change for the Hammers as Behrami is brought off for
Danny Kearns. It is as expected and the Swiss international gets a superb
send off from the home support here. Behrami was beaming from ear to ear as
he left the field there. Birmingham also make a change with Daniel Preston
coming off for Josh Hawker.

55 min - More great play from Diamanti as he plays a lovely ball forward for
Hines to chase. He tries the return ball but it falls a bit short.

53 min - Behrami to Diamanti who flicks the ball forward to Nouble who is
one on one with the goalkeeper. He perhaps takes the wrong option and tries
to chip the ball over Doyle, but it sails over. To be fair to him I do not
think he would have done that at 0-0!

52 min - There does appear to be a small change actually as Daprela and
Ferrari have swapped flanks so we have an Italian at left-back and a Swiss
at right-back.

48 min - It seems to be as your were for the Hammers and they quickly get
back into their stride. Diamanti plays a delightful crossfield ball to
Nouble, who beats his man on the touchline and fires in on goal but it
crashes into the side netting.

46 min - We are under way in the second half. One change for the Blues as
Jamie Dunphy is on for Dann.

Half time - Well that could not have gone any better really could it? Can
Dyer's side keep this up in the second half and if so, who knows what score
we will end up with here?

45 min - Well if the Hammers can carry on like this who knows what score we
will end up with. I do not think the Blues' players will be looking forward
to coming out for the second half much.

43 min - GOAL! And it is four before half time! A ball forward from Da Costa
found Daprela, who in turn feeds Nouble. The No9 puts in his strike partner
Hines, who takes a touch and rolls it into the bottom corner.

40 min - Tony Cottee says on the commentary: "When people score goals like
this it is not luck. They practice, practice and practice. He whipped it up
over the wall into the top corner. It was a magical moment from the young
lad."

39 min - GOAL! Yes he can! And another great goal for the big crowd here.
Diamanti curls the ball left-footed right into the top corner without Doyle
even moving.

39 min - Behrami is felled 25 yards out and we will get to see our first
example of a Diamanti set piece. Can he live up to his billing as a
free-kick specialist?

37 min - A nervous moment for Stech as he loses his footing when trying to
claim the ball. In the end he did well to dive at the feet of Jervis.

34 min - Free-kick to the visitors on the right-hand side after Mr Berry
rules that Diamanti left a leg in. No problem for the Hammers back four
though as the set-piece is hit far too long.

30 min - Some positive play from Nouble sees him pull off a couple of step
overs before firing a shot into the legs of Danns. Moments later David
Ferrari shows his attacking prowess with a burst forward before feeding
Diamante, who just misses the top corner with a curled effort.

26 min - A backpass from Daprela forces Stech into a hurried clearance. His
kick smashes into Jake Jervis and dribbles towards the goal. Thankfully it
rolls inches wide. A let off for the Hammers keeper there.

25 min - Could we being seeing our first booking of the game after Rowe
brings down Payne with a late tackle? Yes we will and you have to say he
cannot really have any complaints about that.

23 min - Foul by N'Gala on the edge of the area gives the Blues a great
chance to get back into the game. Luke Rowe steps up and drills it along the
floor but Daprela is there to hack the ball away.

20 min - The game has settled a little now and the visitors are looking a
little more assured after being rocked the by the Hammers' early double.
N'Gala and Da Costa combine at the back to head a free-kick clear.

16 min - Do not forget you can get free live commentary on the game with
Tony Cottee by clicking the above link. It really has been a great start by
the Hammers here so it is well worth a listen.

14 min - Diamanti has been superb so far and he forces a corner right on the
edge of the penalty area. The Italian takes it and drives it hard across the
goal but Doyle gathers.

13 min - Some great work by Diamanti on the left as he flicks the ball over
David Joyce and crosses left footed. The Birmingham man just gets back in
time and they force the corner.

11 min - Well I've just about got my breath back after all of that but Hines
is doing his best to make sure there is more typing for me. The West Ham
No10 beat his man before rolling a dangerous ball along the floor and Dann
clears again.

9 min - GOAL! Another sensational goal from the Hammers but from a highly
unlikely source. N'Gala was fed the ball on the edge of the area and curled
an inch-perfect shot into the top corner. Two goals in ten? Could Dyer have
wished for a better start?

7 min - Nouble is next to fire a shot in and wins another corner. Once again
Diamanti takes it and Nouble rises highest to thump a header against the
crossbar.

6 min - More brilliant play from Behrami as he intercepts the ball in
midfield before threading a pass for Hines. He tries to take it around the
goalkeeper, but only a last-ditch tackle from Scott Dann stops him in his
tracks.

5 min - Well that goal got a great reaction from the home support and there
certainly sounded more than the 500 we reckon we have got here. Alex Dyer's
side look really up for this and go on the attack again.

3 min - GOAL! Behrami plays a delightful ball forward to Hines and he takes
a couple of touches before unleashing an superb drive into the top corner.
What a start for the Hammers!

1 min- We are underway and the home side go on the offensive straight away.
Daprela plays Nouble in and the power of the striker forces a corner.
Diamanti takes it short to Nigel Quashie who plays it to Josh Payne, who
strikes just wide.

6.58 pm - The players are out and referee Mr Berry calls the captains in.
West Ham win the toss of the coin and will attack the Sir Trevor Brooking
Stand.

6.55pm - The ground staff are making their final tweaks to the pitch as we
await the players and the excitement is building in east London for the
first showing of the four new arrivals and the return of Behrami.

6.48pm - There is a healthy crowd settling into the lower tier of the West
Stand. Admission is free for all supporters tonight and that, along with the
fine weather, has attracted a decent following to the Boleyn Ground tonight.

6.45pm - The returning Valon Behrami is the first one to head down the
tunnel after going through a vigorous pre-match routine. The midfielder
joined in with the keep-ball session before doing a series of shuttle runs
across the pitch.

6.40pm - It is an absolutely beautiful evening in east London for this
evening's Barclays Premier Reserve League South clash with Birmingham City.
Both sets of players are going through their pre-match warmups on the Boleyn
Ground pitch. Unfortunately, the sun has now dropped behind the West Stand,
so the pitch is in the shade, but it is still very warm.

West Ham United will welcome back Valon Behrami to competitive action for
the Barclays Premier Reserve League South visit of Birmingham City on
Tuesday evening.

The Switzerland midfielder has been out of action since suffering knee
ligament damage in the Barclays Premier League visit of Manchester City to
the Boleyn Ground on 1 March.

The fixture also sees three new arrivals make their first appearances in
Hammers shirts, with defenders Davide Ferrari and Manuel Da Costa and
forward Alessandro Diamanti all named in Alex Dyer's side.

Diamanti has arrived from Serie A club AS Livorno Calcio, while former
Portugal Under-21 centre-back Da Costa has joined West Ham from ACF
Fiorentina. Teenage full-back Ferrari has signed from Serie B side Brescia
Calcio.

Behrami's compatriot Fabio Daprela, a Switzerland U19 left-back, will make
his debut at reserve team level.

Academy graduate Bondz N'Gala has been named captain as Dyer's side seek to
bounce back after going down to a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa a week ago.

For Birmingham City, Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Colin
Doyle will line up in goal, with former England U21 defender Scott Dann - a
summer signing from Coventry City - anchoring the back-four.

West Ham United reserves: Stech, Ferrari, Daprela, N'Gala, Da Costa, Payne,
Quashie, Behrami, Hines, Nouble, Diamanti
Subs: Street, Fry, Zola, Kearns, Edgar

Birmingham City reserves: Doyle, Joyce, Rowe, Dann, Preston, Packwood,

Behrami makes return after injury
BBC.co.uk

West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami made his comeback for the reserves against
Birmingham on Tuesday after six months out with knee ligament damage. The
Switzerland international, who was injured against Manchester City in March,
played 60 minutes of the 6-0 win at Upton Park. Afterwards, he said he was
fit to play first-team football again but was not setting himself any target
return date. "I am not scared of my injury now," the 24-year-old told the
club website. Zavon Hines scored a hat-trick and new signing Alessandro
Diamanti netted two free-kicks in a resounding victory for the Hammers'
second string team. Another new arrival from Italy, 17-year-old defender
Davide Ferrari, made his debut after joining on loan from Brescia on a
one-year deal. Ferrari's move, which could turn into a permanent transfer,
was completed before the transfer window shut but could only be made public
after international clearance was received.

A poor Brimingham side were torn apart by Alex Dyer's rampant Hammers at the
Boleyn tonight. Chief tormentor of the Blues was Valon Behrami, who stood
out on his return to action following a lengthy lay off. However Zavon Hines
- who notched a hat-trick - and new boy Alessandro Diamanti will also
receive rave reviews for their part in the demolition of a weak City XI. The
goal glut began as early as the third minute when Zavon Hines registered his
first of the game with a fierce shot into goalkeeper Colin Doyle's net. The
lead was doubled just six minutes later when captain Bondz N'Gala, a centre
half by trade curled a sweet effort into the far corner from the edge of the
penalty box.
New signing Alessandro Diamanti scored his first goal for the club six
minutes ahead of the break when he dispatched a 22-yard free kick into
Doyle's top corner much to the appreciation of the watching crowd of 1,250,
which had had its numbers boosted by the club's decision to allow free entry
to all.

There was still time for one more ahead of the break when a good move
involving new signings Manuel Da Costa and Fabio Daprela culminated with
Hines grabbing his second goal of the evening from close range. A
shellshocked City - who lost their opening game of the 2009/10 campaign 4-0
at home to Arsenal last week - made one change at the break, introducing
Dunphy in place of Dann. That switch - plus no doubt a few stern words from
manager Terry Westley at the break - appeared to improve the visitors
slightly but on 62 minutes they fell further behind when the in-form Hines
completed a well deserved hat-trick. A long ball found its way to the
diminutive striker who bustled his way past three City defenders before
finding the net from close range.

Still not done, the Hammers made it six just three minutes later when
Diamanti notched his second free kick of the night from the opposite side of
the goal to his first. Unlike with the first - which dipped over the wall -
the Italian curled his effort around the wall into Doyle's bottom corner.
Valon Behrami, who looked as sharp as ever throughout received a warm round
of applause upon his substitution a minute ahead of the hour mark. He lasted
six or seven minutes longer than Diamante, who left the field to similarly
rapturous applause with a beaming smile etched upon his face.

Although no further goals were forthcoming substitute David Edgar looked
particularly impressive during the closing stages. Overall it was a good
night for Alex Dyer's side, who bounced back in style following last week's
disappointing 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. Next up for the reserves is a clash
against Birmingham's near neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers. That game is
currently set to take place at Bishops Stortford's Woodside Park ground,
United's regular reserve home ground, next Tuesday evening.

Behrami Returns

VALON BEHRAMI will tonight make his long-awaited return for the reserves at
Upton Park. The Swiss international, 24, has been out injured since damaging
knee ligaments in an awkard fall in last March's 1-0 home win over
Manchester City. Alex Dyer, the Hammers reserve team manager, of tonight's
match against Birmingham City said: "It will be good for us to have a couple
experienced heads in the side and good for them as well. Hopefully Valon
will be back and it will be good for us to see him out on the field again."
The news is a massive boost for first team boss Gianfranco Zola, who has
recently seen fellow midfielder Luis Boa Morte ruled out for the season and
Keiron Dyer struggle to maintain fitness, but is unlikely to rush Behrami
back in to the starting line-up. The energetic midfielder is likely to play
60 minutes tonight and if successful may win himself a place on the bench
for Saturday's match away to Wigan Athletic. Zola, however, may prefer to
see Behrami play another reserve game, before then naming him in the
matchday squad for Liverpool's visit to Upton Park on 19 September.
Behrami's return promises to pose Zola a difficult selection policy once
fully-fit. With the team playing well, there is no obvious candidate to drop
out. With Zola appearing to favour Scott Parker for a holding role and the
likelyhood of Luis Jiminez being given an extended run to prove his creative
worth, the places of Mark Noble, Jack Collison and Juniour Stanislas would
appear most vulnerable.

Collins backed to shine
Gabbidon hails ex-Hammers team-mate
Last updated: 8th September 2009
SSN

Danny Gabbidon is backing ex-West Ham team-mate James Collins to be a
success at Aston Villa. The Welsh duo, who played together for Cardiff, West
Ham and at international level, were separated when Collins joined Villa.
Gabbidon knows Collins' game inside out and thinks Martin O'Neill has done a
fantastic piece of business, despite a £5million outlay. Villa also bagged
Manchester City's Richard Dunne, although Gabbidon believes it is Collins
who the fans will be talking about next summer. "I have lost my mate, my
best man at my wedding, a real pal. I feel like I have had my right arm cut
off," explained Gabbidon. "I'm disappointed he has gone, he has done really
well for West Ham. Villa have got themselves a very good player. He will go
on to do better things for them. "The club needed to bring in a striker and
they needed to sell before they could do that. In defence we have got plenty
of cover and the club felt they could let James go. "Villa have also signed
Richard Dunne, and their fans will be talking about that. But by the end of
the season they will be talking about James."

Make them clean my boots - Lampard slams young English talent
Sport.co.uk
Author: Andrew Allen
Posted on:09 September 2009 - 09:31

Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard has spoken out about the pampered
lifestyles of young academy prospects at Premier League clubs around the
country and claimed that a lack of professionalism and pampered lifestyles
are creating a generation of stars out of touch with reality. Asked what he
makes of young English talent coming through the ranks, the former West Ham
United protégé told btvision.com:
"Not enough of them are professional. It's something I feel very strongly
about. There are good young pros out there but nowadays it's made much too
easy for them. "We're all lucky to be where we are, leading nice lifestyles,
but that lifestyle is coming earlier and earlier. The lads are forgetting
the hard work that needs to be done to earn that lifestyle. Sometimes when
you mix with international players and have a taste of the trimmings at 16,
17 or 18, you can forget you're not there yet. "We have a fantastic Academy
at Chelsea, but players don't clean boots any more and I'm a big advocate of
them doing that. John Terry and I always complain that they should be
cleaning boots because it was a great learning curve for us, being told off
by Julian Dicks and having the boots thrown back at you. "Once that's gone,
an edge can be taken off. If that stops players being as good as they should
be that's bad."
