Da Costa settling in
WHUFC.com
New signing Manuel Da Costa is looking forward to making his bow in English
football
02.09.2009

Manuel Da Costa cannot wait to experience the passion of English football
after completing his move to West Ham United. The French-born former
Portugal Under-21 defender is eager to make his mark after arriving on a
three-year contract from Italian Serie A club ACF Fiorentina. He is set to
have the No22 shirt and could be in the squad against Wigan Athletic on
Saturday week as the Football Association have confirmed they have requested
international transfer clearance. Despite being aged just 23, Da Costa has
already amassed a wealth of experience, appearing in the UEFA Champions
League quarter-finals and winning the Dutch Eredivisie title with PSV
Eindhoven, as well as earning more than 20 U21 caps for his country. The
powerfully-built defender played against both Liverpool and Arsenal during
PSV's run to the last-eight of Europe's premier cup competition in 2006/07,
and Da Costa is looking forward to playing in packed Barclays Premier League
stadiums again on a more regular basis.

"I remember when playing against Liverpool, firstly, that they were a very
good team. However, the thing that stuck out was that the atmosphere was
great. I liked the English passion for football - the crowd and the
supporters are very, very important and I like that. I relish the pressure
created by the passion from the supporters when they want us to do well. I
thrive on that and like to have that kind of atmosphere. "Playing against
Liverpool was one of the highlights of my career because playing in England
is always a great experience."

Da Costa, who also appeared for Portugal at the 2007 UEFA European U21
Championship finals, revealed that West Ham's desire to bring him to London,
as well as a chance meeting with Hammers right-back Julien Faubert, had been
the major factors behind his move. "I spoke with Gianluca Nani and
Gianfranco Zola and they both told me they wanted me to come over and to
give me a chance to have a fresh start. They told me they had confidence in
my ability, which made me feel good, so I was very happy to join West Ham.
"I also had the chance to meet with Julien Faubert when we were both in
France recovering from injury and we spoke a lot about West Ham and playing
in England. Julien is a good guy and we got to know each other quite well. I
am looking forward to living and playing in London myself now."

Describing himself as 'a strong defender who is also good in the air', Da
Costa has was also called into the senior Portugal squad for the 2008 UEFA
European Championship qualifiers against Azerbaijan, Poland, Kazakhstan,
Belgium and Serbia, but has yet to make his full debut. Portugal are
battling to qualify for next summer's FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but
the Hammers' new signing insisted he is focused on his club, rather than
country, for now. "For me the most important thing is not the national team,
although it obviously remains the ambition of every player to represent
their country at the World Cup. I have not played a lot recently, so the
first thing I want to do is to establish myself within the squad and within
the team. "I want to convince Gianfranco and his coaching staff that I am a
player that they can rely on, then I hope that everything else will take
care of itself."

Mixed start for Dyer
WHUFC.com
Reserve-team manager Alex Dyer was in philosophical mood after going down to
defeat by Aston Villa
02.09.2009

Reserve-team manager Alex Dyer was in philosophical mood after watching his
side open the 2009/10 season with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa. Goals from
Nathan Delfouneso and Gary Gardner condemned West Ham United, who scored
through a James Collins own-goal, to defeat by the defending Barclays
Premier Reserve League South champions at Villa Park.
Hammers boss Dyer particularly found positives in the performances of
youngsters Jordan Brown and Eoin Wearen, along with goalkeeper Peter Kurucz.
"I was pleased with certain aspects of the performance, but I thought the
goals we gave away were quite sloppy. There were some good parts to it, when
we got the ball down and played it worked quite well. "It was a physical
game and a good place to come. It was always going to be difficult, as they
have won the league two years in a row. I came here with a very decent side
that competed well, but lacked that cutting edge."
While left-back Brown's mistake allowed Villa winger Marc Albrighton to
set-up Delfouneso's fourth-minute opener, Dyer was impressed with the
17-year-old's ability to put the error to the back of his mind. Republic of
Ireland Under-17 midfielder Wearen, 16, who appeared as a first-half
substitute after Andrea Zola suffered a facial injury, also demonstrated his
potential with a strong display. "There were some promising performances out
there. The young lad Jordan Brown did very well after starting a bit nervy.
The first goal was down to him a little bit, but after that he settled down
and showed good character and showed why he is at this football club. He
bounced back after his initial mistake and worked hard and showed some good
quality. "I was forced to make a change early on when young Zola had to come
off, and young Eoin came on and played very well. He looked like he could
start up to that regularly and he is only 16, so that was very good. They
were two good plusses. "Peter made some very good saves too, so overall,
there were some good points. It was our first game and we need to sharpen up
on a few things. I came away thinking we'd done a few good things, but we've
got to do better."

While Frank Nouble, Zavon Hines and Anthony Edgar all worked hard, Dyer
believes his frontmen need to be more careful in possession of the ball in
future fixtures. "We worked it well up to the final third but could not
retain the ball. We came forward and it bounced back and put our defence and
midfield under pressure. We obviously need to work on that and on the
front-three retaining the ball in good areas. "When we get the ball in and
around the box, we need to get the ball into the forward's feet and retain
it and get shots off and set people up. We didn't that enough against Aston
Villa."

Losing start for Purdy

Danny Purdy's Republic of Ireland U17s lost out to Russia at the Syrenka Cup
in Poland
02.09.2009

West Ham United Academy forward Danny Purdy was part of the Republic of
Ireland Under-17 team that went down to a 2-1 defeat by Russia on Tuesday.
The 16-year-old, who joined the Hammers from Dublin-based Crumlin United in
the summer, played a full 80 minutes in Ireland's opening Syrenka Cup Group
B fixture in the Polish town of Zgierz. Ireland fell behind after just two
minutes before hitting back through Queens Park Rangers' Frankie Sutherland
on 13 minutes. Russia went ahead again two minutes into the second half
before Purdy came within inches of scoring a later equaliser, only to see
his curling shot tipped round the post by goalkeeper Isupov. Ireland,
managed by Sean McCaffrey, will take on Sweden in their second group fixture
in Lodz on Wednesday before meeting either Bulgaira, Denmark, Ukraine or
Denmark in their final match on Friday.
The Irish will commence their UEFA European U17 Championship qualifying
campaign with Group 6 matches against Bulgaria, Latvia and Sweden in
Bulgaria at the end of September.

Three lions in line
WHUFC.com
West Ham United will be proudly represented by Robert Green, Matthew Upson
and Carlton Cole on England duty
02.09.2009

Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole were training again with
England on Wednesday all with a realistic chance of lining up in the vital
FIFA World Cup qualifier against Croatia next week. The trio have been
regulars under Fabio Capello of late and will want to impress in a friendly
at home against Slovenia this Saturday before the all-important qualifier
against the Croatians. Should England win that Group Six encounter they will
be certain of a place at the finals in South Africa next summer. Green,
Upson and Cole first figured on the pitch together for England back in
February in the second half of a 2-0 defeat by Spain in Seville. That was
the first time the club had seen three Hammers in action for the country at
the same time since 7 September 2002 when David James, Trevor Sinclair and
Joe Cole figured in a 1-1 draw with Portugal.
The 29-year-old Green has started the last three internationals in the
absence of David James and has five caps to his name. His form has been
tremendous at the start of the new club season, with clean sheets in the
away win and draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers
respectively. Upson, 30, is the most experienced of the trio. He has 15 caps
and one goal for his country, and could get the nod to replace the injured
Rio Ferdinand. The club captain at West Ham will hope to partner John Terry
Up front, the 25-year-old Cole has retained his place after his excellent
substitute's cameo in the last friendly - a 2-2 draw in the Netherlands on
12 August. That was his third international cap although he is yet to find
the net. He is up and running for West Ham though, with a superb strike
against Tottenham Hotspur last month in front of the watching Capello.

Youngsters start U21 road
WHUFC.com
Another U21 Euro qualifying campaign is approaching with three homegrown
Hammers in the frame
02.09.2009

James Tomkins, Junior Stanislas and Freddie Sears are working hard with
England ahead of the opening match of the 2011 UEFA European Under-21
Championship qualifying campaign on Friday. The trio, who all featured in
the goalless friendly draw against the Netherlands last month, will all
travel to Prilep as the Young Lions begin their Group 9 qualifiers against
FYR Macedonia before heading to Athens to take on Greece four days later.
Former Hammers defender Stuart Pearce will manage the U21s once again and is
looking to instill team spirit in his new crop of youngsters. "We need to
have the camaraderie and the team cohesion working," he said. "There's one
or two who have come into the group this time and it's a new environment for
them. "It'll be the highest level that they play. Yes, some of them play for
their clubs, but others are yet to make it into their first teams, so it's
important that they gain enough experience as they can. They will also be
expected to get results while they are doing that."

Tomkins helped England to reach the 2009 UEFA Euro final and has four caps
to his name, while Stanislas and Sears, who is on loan at Crystal Palace,
earned their debuts in the Dutch draw in Groningen.

West Ham's latest set of accounts have revealed that the club lost a massive
£37million in the year ending 2008. United CEO Scott Duxbury told KUMB.com
earlier in the summer that the forthcoming set of accounts would be a
disaster - but the extent of the clubs financial problems will surely
surprise even the most pessimistic of supporters.

Despite a steady string of player sales in the past 18 months - including
Bobby Zamora (£5.3m), Anton Ferdinand (£8m), George McCartney (£6m), Matthew
Etherington (£3m), Craig Bellamy (12m) and now Savio (£3m) and James Collins
(£5m) - the Hammers are still reported to be in serious financial trouble,
with the club's full liabilities said to total around £100million, according
to a report in today's Guardian.

Additionally it is reported that West Ham could have been forced into
administration earlier this year had the club's five bankers - who, The
Guardian claim, lent United some £20million to cover losses incurred during
2008 - not agreed to allow United extra time to repay further debts after
they breached debt covenents.

Financial Director Nick Igoe, who was also Financial Director throughout the
Gudmundsson/Magnusson reign said:

"The scale of operating losses and wages caused the group to breach certain
banking covenants in 2007-08. Although the group's banking syndicate [later]
waived these breaches, a business strategy which relies on the goodwill of
the group's bankers to waive covenant breaches is fundamentally flawed."

The Icelandics are reported to have allowed the club's wage bill to rise to
an astonishing £63million - just £18million shy of the club's turnover for
that year. That figure included a combined cost of around £20million for
just three players - Freddie Ljungberg, Craig Bellamy and Kieron Dyer - as
Eggert Magnusson went on a crazy spending spree that eventually cost him his
position at the club.

Igoe added: "Whilst creditable, the 10th place finish [in 2007/08] has to be
viewed in the context of a £21million increase in wages and a further
£15.7million net investment in transfer fees, following the £29.9million
investment in the previous season. Again ignoring exceptional expenses, the
group recorded a loss before player trading and after interest of £7.4m."

The sale of James Collins to Aston Villa on transfer deadline day was the
last straw for many fans who have now seen the club wave goodbye to more
than 25 players since the end of the 2007/08 season. Today's revelations
will add fuel to the fire of those suggesting that the popular defender was
sold to appease the club's bankers - which is something that the club's Non
Executive Chairman Andrew Bernhardt said would not happen just three months
ago.

So whilst many Hammers fans may have thought that the worst was over, it is
now becoming clear that further sales could be necessary in order to keep
the club afloat.

Cottee slams CB Holdings
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 2nd September 2009
By: Staff Writer

Former Hammer Tony Cottee has criticised West Ham United's owners for
failing to invest in the playing squad during the summer transfer window.
Cottee, who was previously part of a consortium interested in purchasing the
club before Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson and Eggert Magnusson arrived in London
blasted CB Holdings for their refusal to allow Gianfranco Zola to improve an
ever-thinning squad. "The biggest concern coming out of this transfer window
is that the off-field situation at the very top of the club needs to be
sorted out," he told the East London Advertiser. "There has been a trickle
of players out of Upton Park over the last 18 months and it's all been to
balance the books. "That just won't work in the long-term. If you own a
football club, you've got to invest in it. At the moment, there's no
investment at West Ham and that puts huge pressure on the likes of Scott
Duxbury and Gianfranco Zola. "I know that Scott and Gianfranco were
desperate to sign players, but unfortunately you need money to sign players
and without backing from the club's owners, what can they do? "They can
identify players and negotiate deals to sign them, but if the owners refuse
to release any funds, they're just as powerless as the rest of us. And you
can't have a situation where the manager and the chief executive are at
loggerheads with the owners."
Cottee also slammed United's current owners for attempting to run the club
like 'a bank' - and insisted that fears of relegation troubles, as a result
of CBH's insistence on not putting a single penny into the club, were very
real. "It's very easy to get sucked into a relegation battle, especially
this year because it's the most competitive Premier League for many, many
years," added the former Hammers and England striker. "There are six clubs
potentially involved in the scrap at the top and as many as 10 or 12 in the
scrap at the bottom and we can't be complacent and think we won't be
involved. What if we're involved at the wrong end of the table in January
and we're again told that there's no money available to strengthen the team?
How is the manager supposed to turn it around? "The only way to avoid going
backwards as a club is to invest, you need to spend or you'll stagnate. I'm
not asking for them to pump hundreds of millions into the club, but it's a
worrying sign when the likes of Hull, Sunderland and Stoke are outspending
us. "Part of the problem is that I can't even tell you who's making the
decisions about the club - is it Straumur, is it CB Holdings? Whoever it is,
it's a mess. The owners have got to realise that this is more than just a
business and you can not run West Ham like a bank or a commercial company."
Andrew Bernhardt, West Ham United's non-executive Chairman and the
spokesperson for CB Holdings insisted at the start of the transfer window
that 'asset-stripping' wasn't an option. "The wage bill has been reduced and
the settlement agreed with Sheffield United is budgeted for," he had said.
"I can assure fans that Gianfranco absolutely does not have to sell any
players for financial reasons and new players will be arriving in the summer
to augment what is already a strong playing staff."

Sadly, as Cottee points out, that doesn't appear to have been the case.

MDC looks ahead

West Ham United's newest recruit has been speaking about his hopes for this
season. Manuel Da Costa put pen to paper on a permanent switch from
Fiorentina to West Ham just 24 hours ahead of the closure of the summer
transfer window. The central defender - who was rated at around £2million in
the player-plus-cash deal that saw Savio Nsereko return to Italy - is not
expected to trouble Gianfranco Zola's first team immediately but hopes he
can do enough to convince his manager that he was a worthy capture.
"I spoke with Gianluca Nani and Gianfranco Zola and they both told me they
wanted me to come over and to give me a chance to have a fresh start," he
told whufc.com. "They told me they had confidence in my ability, which made
me feel good, so I was very happy to join West Ham. "I have not played a lot

squad and within the team. I want to convince Gianfranco and his coaching
staff that I am a player that they can rely on, then I hope that everything
else will take care of itself. I am looking forward to living and playing in
London."
Da Costa - a player who appeared to have the world at his feet two years ago
having been linked with some of Europe's biggest clubs - experienced a
torrid time in Italy and barely featured for La Viola, for whom he signed in
January 2008, before spending the latter half of last season on loan at
Sampdoria. He made his name in Holland with PSV, for whom he featured before
the ill-fated move to Italy. Despite being a bit-part player during his
first season with the Boeren Da Costa went on to become an important member
of Ronald Koeman's first team and featured in a number of Champions League
ties during the 2006/07 season.

Manuel Da Costa: fact file

Full name: Manuel Marouan da Costa Trindade Senoussi

Age: 23

Height: 6'2"

Previous clubs: Nancy (2004-06); PSV Eindhoven (2006-08); Fiorentina

International caps: Portugal under-21s (22).

Collins speaks out over Aston Villa move
KUMB.com
Filed: Wednesday, 2nd September 2009
By: Thomas Rooney

Let's be honest, it wasn't the greatest of transfer deadline days. Not for
Sky Sports – who I will speak about shortly – not for armchair football fans
and not for West Ham United.
One of the highest profile moves of the day was that of Hammers defender
James Collins to Premier League rivals Aston Villa, a move that is sure to
upset the Premier League odds. Martin O'Neil agreed a fee of around
£5million with the club on Tuesday morning and the deal was completed later
in the day. It is thought that Gianfranco Zola was relatively hesitant to
sell Collins – who has started each of West Ham's three Premier League games
so far – but he was left with little choice because of the club's uncertain
financial position. The sum of money Villa were willing to pay was seemingly
too much to turn down. This is frustrating to say the least, but if it eases
some financial concerns, then so be it. James Tomkins is a very talented
young player and he will have to step up. As for the reasons that Collins
decided to accept Aston Villa's offer, well he believes that he has 'taken a
step forward' in his career by making the move. Although he 'loved' his time
at Upton Park, he says that he is 'delighted' to be joining a 'massive club'
like Villa. The Welsh international revealed that he went to have a look
around the club on Monday and found it to be a 'fantastic setting'. Overall,
it seems fair to say that he is happy with the way things have panned out as
well. West Ham shouldn't be too down about it either actually, they have
received £5million – a sum they, admittedly, can't spend until January – and
they have a young defender in Tomkins who is raring to go.
Collins was a popular player and a solid defender, but he can be replaced.
In reality, he has to be if West Ham are to move forward this season. Time
to deal with what you have got Gianfranco. We'd rather Collins left than
Matthew Upson anyway wouldn't we? To finish with for today, I wanted to
mention Sky Sports' coverage of the transfer deadline day. In my view, it
was painful to watch. Everyone knew by about 4pm that it was probably going
to end up being a relatively quiet day without too many last ditch signings.
However, they insisted on their over-the-top coverage with constant
'updates' that simply told us what we already knew. The amount of times they
went to Villa Park for an update on Richard Dunne's transfer was ridiculous.
'Yep, still not quite gone through here…' Anyway, that's my mini rant over.
Here's to three points at Wigan after the international break.

West Ham offered Jonathan Spector to Tottenham before window shut
Published 16:14 02/09/09 By John Cross
The Mirror

West Ham offered Jonathan Spector to Tottenham as a last-minute emergency
signing - just seven months after promising never to deal with their bitter
London rivals again.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp wanted defensive cover after losing captain Ledley
King with a groin injury while Jonathan Woodgate is also out injured. That
prompted West Ham to offer 23-year-old versatile defender Spector with chief
executive Scott Duxbury under pressure to cut the hard-up club's wage bill.
But Duxbury had vowed never to deal with Spurs again after an ugly transfer
tug-of-war over Craig Bellamy who eventually joined Manchester City. Duxbury
was enraged with Redknapp at the time for going public on his admiration of
Bellamy and promised to take a firm stand. Duxbury said in January: "There
is massive rivalry between ourselves and Tottenham. I won't sell any of our
players to our local rivals." But hard-up Hammers appear to have changed
their tune as the pressure mounts on the club to cut their budget. They
agreed a £5m deal to sell James Collins but Matt Upson turned down an £8m
move to Fiorentina.

Robert Green's patience likely to be rewarded
The Times
Oliver Kay, Chief Football Correspondent

Robert Green, the West Ham United goalkeeper, is expected to make his fourth
consecutive appearance for England against Slovenia on Saturday as Fabio
Capello gives him another opportunity to stake a claim for next year's World
Cup finals. Green has been self-deprecating in the past about his lack of
openings with the national team, even having the phrase "England's No6" sewn
into his gloves. But, with concerns growing about David James's prospects
for next summer's tournament in South Africa, Green is emerging ahead of Ben
Foster as the leading contender in Capello's mind. Foster, whose priority
is to make the most of an extended opportunity at Manchester United during
Edwin van der Sar's absence through injury, may win his third cap as a
substitute in the friendly match against Slovenia at Wembley. Green, though,
is expected to start that game and, more importantly, the World Cup
qualifying match at home to Croatia four days later.
In addition to the absence of James, with a knee injury, Capello has
concerns about several of his defenders. Rio Ferdinand is ruled out of the
squad with a calf problem and neither John Terry nor Wes Brown was able to
train yesterday because of minor injuries. Gary Cahill, the Bolton Wanderers
defender, has been called into the squad. Matthew Upson remains the slight
favourite, ahead of Joleon Lescott, to start alongside Terry in central
defence on Saturday. One defender certain of his place in the team, Ashley
Cole, has suggested that, at the age of 28, next summer's World Cup may be
his last. The full back signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea
yesterday, having produced outstanding form in the past 12 months, but he is
less certain about his prospects of playing for England in 2014. "A lot of
the players have started to realise that this World Cup finals could be our
last major tournament," he said. "I've got good young players coming up in
my position, so I know there is pressure."

The transfer window's not closed for these players!
Out-of-contract Viduka, Van der Meyde and Co are still open to offers
By Tom Bellwood Last updated at 7:46 AM on 03rd September 2009
Daily Mail

Managers around the country will be kicking themselves as attempts to bring
in new talent failed when the transfer window slammed shut. But, fear not,
Mr. Annoyed Manager as there's no reason why you can't add to your squad
right now. All you need to do is find yourself a footballer who is a free
agent. You see, the rules that govern when a player, who is registered with
a club, can move do not apply to free agents.

Players that have experience, talent, a pair of boots and, most importantly,
no club can join a team whenever they want. So, form a queue (no pushing at
the back, there) and get your hands on one of these pros. Pros that no-one
else wants...

Mark Viduka
Surely still worth a few goals to someone? The Duke has the turning circle
of a supertanker but retains the touch of an angel and would gladly return
to Newcastle if Alan Shearer was given the manager's job back. That's good
of him.

Lucas Neill
Australian No 2 on our list and it seems like just minutes ago that Neill
was commanding £75,000 a week and captaining a Premier League side. How
times have changed. The experienced right-back is still only 31, so has a
few years left in the tank yet.

Andy van der Meyde
A controversial four-year stint at Everton has come to an end and the nippy
winger now needs a new home. Can you help? Newcastle have shown some
interest in the Dutchman who some would say 'comes with a bit of baggage.'

Michael Ball
An unwanted gift. Ball was kicked out the door when his Manchester City
owners got some better toys to play with. The 29-year-old captained
Manchester City last season and is an England international (Yes, those two
statements are extremely tenuous).

Moritz Volz
This German is a good little runner and doesn't have too many miles on the
clock. After stints at Arsenal, Wimbledon, Fulham and Ipswich Town, it is
remarkable that the right-back is still only 26.

Dietmar Hamann
How can you not want to employ a man with a face a beautiful as Dietmar's?
Surely someone can find a spot in their team for a man who held Liverpool's
midfield together during the Champions League final of 2005 and scored the
free-kick that forced Kevin Keegan out of the England job?

Glauber Berti
The man achieved legend status at Eastlands by playing a grand total of six
minutes for City last season. The centre-back is only 26 and Brazilian -
they're always good at football (unless your name's Gilberto and played for
Spurs).

Lauren
Now this man won gold at the Olympics in 2000 with Cameroon - so he must be
brilliant. Why haven't someone like Arsenal signed the lofty right-back? Oh
yeah, they did and let him go. Sorry, Lauren.

Dwight Yorke
Who cares that he's 37 and has been intimate with the not-so-delightful
Jordan, this man scores goals for fun.

Henri Camara
This man has a wife and kid for goodness sake. Will someone have a heart and
give him a job? The Senegal striker spent the summer on trial in Hull
(playing football, not in court) and is available to score some goals for
you right now. Please.

West Ham accounts reveal loss of £37m
West Ham debts and liabilities close to £100m
Accounts unveil 'fundamentally flawed' strategy
Matt Scott The Guardian, Thursday 3 September 2009

The shocking extent of West Ham United's financial crisis during the
Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson era has been laid bare in the clubs's accounts, which
have been obtained by the Guardian. The documents reveal a business strategy
that, in the opinion of the club's finance director, Nick Igoe, was
"fundamentally flawed".

The accounts set out a loss of more than £37.4m for the year ending 2008,
which was covered by an injection of £30.5m of cash from the holding company
of the former owner, Gudmundsson, and £17m of new loans negotiated with the
banks in January 2008. Now that the club's parent company, CB Holding, is
effectively a subsidiary of Iceland's now defunct bank Straumur, even a
marginal loss this year could result in a return to the 2008 crisis.

In addition, the Hammers have net debt and contingent liabilities
approaching £100m. But since West Ham are also yet to file their May 2009
accounts, the true current picture has not been presented. It is believed
five syndicate banks have together raised their loans to the club to £50m
and whether the auditors, Deloitte, will sign off the most recent accounts
is an important consideration.

West Ham have embarked on a series of cash-saving measures but, despite net
transfer proceeds in the 12 months to 5 June this year of £11.67m, troubled
times still lie ahead.

Of paramount concern is the stark admission that the club had breached their
debt covenants. This meant that the five banks that had then loaned them
more than £20m could have demanded immediate repayment, a move that would
have plunged the Upton Park club into administration. Only what the board
has termed the "goodwill" of those banks prevented West Ham becoming the
first Premier League club to suffer that fate.

"The scale of operating losses and wages caused the group to breach certain
banking covenants in 2007-08," Igoe said. "Although the group's banking
syndicate [later] waived these breaches, a business strategy which relies on
the goodwill of the group's bankers to waive covenant breaches is
fundamentally flawed."

At that time the annual wage bill amounted to £63.3m on turnover of £81.5m,
a ratio of almost 78% that the club recognises as being "unsustainable".
Only the removal from the wage bill of players such as Craig Bellamy, Anton
Ferdinand, Bobby Zamora and Matthew Etherington has allowed the club to
continue trading.

There are further financial pressures off the pitch that will continue to
hit home. The collapse of the former shirt sponsor, XL, is estimated to have
cost the club £4m. The settlement with Sheffield United after the Carlos
Tevez inquiry has added another £21m in future liabilities, to be paid in
four equal tranches each year to February 2013.

Add to that the £17.8m that the club owe following Gudmundsson's spending
spree and it is apparent that the Hammers remain on shaky ground. "It is
clear with the benefit of hindsight that not all of the investment
undertaken in the playing squad in the period under review was prudent,"
Igoe said. "West Ham United purchased three high-profile players in 2007-08
at a combined cost of £20m with total annual wages in excess of £12m. Those
players made 36 starting appearances between them in the season."

Those three players were Freddie Ljungberg, Bellamy and Kieron Dyer. While
their arrivals characterised the profligacy of Gudmundsson's stewardship of
the club, their injuries characterised the 2007-08 season and it was
remarkable that the club finished in mid-table.

However Igoe qualified that by adding: "Whilst creditable, the 10th place
finish has to be viewed in the context of a £21m increase in wages [almost
exclusively player wages] and a further £15.7m net investment in transfer
fees, following the £29.9m investment in the previous season. Again ignoring
exceptional expenses, the group recorded a loss before player trading and
after interest of £7.4m."

I Think I Need a Lie Down…
West Ham Till I Die

When I interviewed Scott Duxbury in June he warned that the club's accounts,
when filed, would not make happy reading. How right he was. The Guardian has
obtained them and I would suggest that before you click HERE, you have a
stiff drink.

I don't think any of us can have imagined just how badly Eggert Magnusson's
spending spree had landed us in it. Our debt position is truly horrendous
and we must have come very close to going into administration. When you have
to rely on the goodwill of the banks, it truly is a desperate situation.

Perhaps this demonstrates just how vital that £5 million fee for James
Collins really was, although you'd have to say it would have been entirely
understandable if they had sold Matthew Upson.

I don't normally quote a newspaper article in full, but this one warrants
it. Here goes…

The shocking extent of West Ham United's financial crisis during the
Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson era has been laid bare in the club's accounts, which
have been obtained by the Guardian.

Igoe said. "West Ham United purchased three high-profile players in 2007-08

fees, following the £29.9m investment in the previous season. Again ignoring
exceptional expenses, the group recorded a loss before player trading and
after interest of £7.4m."

I'm told that since these accounts were filed the financial situation has
been stabilised. Well thank the Lord for that!

West Ham in line for Mark Viduka bid with Marouane Chamakh set for January
transfer
West Ham United are considering making a move for Mark Viduka as they
continue their hunt for another striker to add to their squad.
Telegraph.co.uk
By Jason Burt, Deputy Football Correspondent

The 33-year-old Australian is available as a free agent after his contract
expired at Newcastle United during the summer. He has held talks with West
Ham, and other Premier League clubs, over his future. West Ham are now
weighing up whether to make Viduka an offer although the club are also
understood to be looking at other strikers who are out of contract and who,
therefore, can be signed even though the transfer window is now closed. West
Ham target out-of-contract striker West Ham remain confident that they can
still sign Marouane Chamakh, the Moroccan striker, either in January or next
summer when his contract at Bordeaux ends. The club were given permission to
speak to Chamakh, after a £7 million fee was agreed, and talks have taken
place. It's understood he was impressed by West Ham but was also keen to at
least play in the group stages of the Champions League with Bordeaux. It may
be that Chamakh will decide to sign a pre-contract agreement with West Ham
in January, as he is entitled to do, although if he continues to impress
there is likely to be competition from other clubs.
It means that West Ham are looking for a short-term option to add to their
list of strikers, especially as Dean Ashton has still not regained full
fitness and there are question marks as to whether he will. West Ham
released a statement after the closure of the transfer window which
explained their dealings. It read: "Attempts were made on Tuesday to
finalise negotiations for another forward to complement the existing attack.
Terms were agreed with the selling club but the player was unwilling to
join."
That striker was Manchester City's Benjani Mwaruwari. However the Zimbabwean
did not accept the offer because, much to the astonishment of both clubs, he
would prefer to move down to League Two and join Notts County, albeit on
Premier League wages. West Ham's statement went on: "Gianluca Nani
(technical director) and Gianfranco Zola (manager) are now discussing the
possibility of an out of contract striker joining the club who has been
tracked in the past month."

Although talks are underway with Viduka he is not the only option. West Ham
also rebuffed a deadline day approach from Tottenham Hotspur for their
captain Matthew Upson. Spurs proposed offering £8 million for the central
defender, the same fee West Ham had rejected from Fiorentina, but were given
no encouragement. Zola has received a significant boost with Valon Behrami
returning to training. The Swiss international is in contention for a
first-team return when West Ham face Wigan Athletic on Sept 12 when new
signing Alessandro Diamanti is expected to make his debut. West Ham and
Millwall will submit their reports to the Football Association following the
violence that erupted at last week's Carling Cup tie between the two clubs.
The information will now be assessed by the FA who are conducting an
inquiry.

West Ham swoop for Crumlin United striker Purdy

West Ham United have signed Irish youngster Danny Purdy. The Republic of
Ireland U17 international joined the Hammers in the summer from Dublin-based
Crumlin United.
Purdy featured in Ireland's 2-1 defeat by Russia on Tuesday.

Da Costa: Faubert convinced me about West Ham

Former Fiorentina defender Manuel da Costa is pleased with his move to West
Ham United. The Portugal international told whufc.com: "I spoke with
Gianluca Nani and Gianfranco Zola and they both told me they wanted me to
come over and to give me a chance to have a fresh start. They told me they
had confidence in my ability, which made me feel good, so I was very happy
to join West Ham. "I also had the chance to meet with Julien Faubert when we
were both in France recovering from injury and we spoke a lot about West Ham
and playing in England. Julien is a good guy and we got to know each other
quite well. I am looking forward to living and playing in London myself
now."

Deadline drama: West Ham couldn't locate agent of Man City's Benjani
03.09.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United wanted to sign Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari on
transfer deadline day. The Daily Mail says West Ham tried to sign Manchester
City striker Benjani as cover for Carlton Cole on deadline day but failed
because they could not track down his agent. The Hammers also ran out of
time to sign Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh, who remains a target for
later in the season.

Neill now linked with Atletico Madrid
03.09.09 | Andrew Slevison

Former West Ham captain Lucas Neill is now being linked with Spanish club
Atletico Madrid. The Australian international, who is currently a free agent
after his contract with the Hammers expired at the end of last season, is
reportedly close to joining Atletico according to The Sun. It is believed
that Neill has been offered £1.56million a year by the Spaniards which would
be £5,000 less than what he was offered by West Ham to return to Upton Park.
Although the initial figure is less, Neill will only be taxed 20 per cent in
Spain, meaning he will actually receive over £300,000 more than if he
remained in England. Britain's 50 per cent rate for high earners comes in
next April.

West Ham's Green confident of keeping number one England spot
03.09.09 | Andrew Slevison

West Ham goalkeeper Rob Green is confident his recent performances will be
enough to keep him wearing the gloves in Fabio Capello's England squad. The
29-year old has played the past three matches for the national team in the
absence of David James and Ben Foster and believes he has shown enough to
appear against Slovenia in an international friendly this weekend, a lead-up
to next week's World Cup qualifier against Croatia. "I think it's the same
for me as everyone else who is playing at the moment," he said. "The manager
has said he is taking it on the club form, who's playing well and who is
training well. "As I always say with things like this, there is stuff you
can control, and stuff you can't control, and the thing I can control is how
I play for West Ham. "Realistically, you take things as you see them - and a
clean sheet, like the one I had at Blackburn (on the weekend), is fine for
me. "If you go into every game and keep a clean sheet then you are a pretty
good keeper."
Green admitted he was letting his thoughts drift towards South Africa next
year but said it was healthy to believe you are the best in your position.
"At this moment, I am thinking about going to the World Cup as England's
number one," he insisted. "There is no point turning up if you think you're
going to be understudy. There is no point turning up not to play. "Playing
football is the key part of any footballer's career and life. You want to
play. Whether that happens or not is something beyond your control but if
you have done everything you can then there is no more you can do."

Champions just too good
WHUFC.com
West Ham United were edged out by Barclays Premier Reserve League champions
Aston Villa on Tuesday
01.09.2009

West Ham United's Barclays Premier Reserve League South campaign began with
a narrow 2-1 loss at reigning champions Aston Villa on Tuesday. A youthful
Hammers lineup played a full part in a keenly-contested game at Villa Park,
but were unable to resist the home side, who have won the title in each of
the last two seasons and also beat North champions Sunderland in the
inter-division play-off in May. Highly-rated striker Nathan Delfouneso fired
Villa into a fourth-minute lead with a smart finish as Villa enjoyed much
the better of things before half-time. West Ham's sole chance of the opening
45 minutes fell to Zavon Hines, but the Jamaican was unable to replicate his
finish in last Tuesday's Carling Cup victory over Millwall, shooting too
close to veteran goalkeeper Andy Marshall. The Hammers, who lost midfielder
Andrea Zola to a facial injury midway through the opening 45 minutes, came
out strongly after the break, and were level five minutes into the second
period. Matt Fry was fouled by Chris Herd as he broke forward down the left,
Anthony Edgar swung over a vicious, curling free-kick and the ball looped
past Marshall via the head of Villa's Republic of Ireland youth
international striker James Collins. For a while, it appeared Alex Dyer's
side could go on to claim all three points, but the Villans had other ideas,
securing the victory themselves thanks to a sumptuous volley from substitute
Gary Gardner 18 minutes from full-time. Gardner, the younger brother of
Villa defender Craig, was fouled midway inside the Hammers half by Josh
Payne. Eric Lichaj lifted the resulting free-kick into the box, where the
ball fell to Gardner, who controlled on his chest before lifting an
inch-perfect volley past Peter Kurucz.
West Ham, for whom Frank Nouble enjoyed a decent night, tried gamely to
force their way back into the match, but it was the hosts who finished by
far the stronger of the two teams. Kurucz did superbly to deny Collins twice
inside the space of a few seconds, while Delfouneso and substitute Adam
McGurk both shot narrowly off-target when well-placed. While Dyer will be
slightly disappointed by the result, the performances of the likes of
Nouble, left-back Jordan Brown, 18, and 16-year-old midfielder Eoin Wearen,
in particular, were cause for optimism.

Aston Villa 2-1 Reserves FT
WHUFC.com
All the action as West Ham United began their Barclays Premier Reserve
League South campaign
01.09.2009

Aston Villa reserves v West Ham United reserves
Barclays Premier Reserve League South
Tuesday 1 September
Kick-off: 7pm
Villa Park

Full-time - Aston Villa reserves 2-1 West Ham United reserves

93 min - The full-time whistle is blown and it is a slightly disappointing
start for Alex Dyer and his players. They worked ever so hard, but Villa
were full-value for their win. West Ham reserves will return to action a
week tonight when Birmingham City will be the visitors.

92 min - Fine defensive work from Jordan Brown to deny Delfouneso. He kept
his composure well as Villa broke forward with numbers and made a fine
sliding challenge on the striker.

90 min - McGurk slices a shot over after Albrighton's cross had eluded
everyone inside the six-yard box. We're going to have two minutes of
added-time.

88 min - Very close to a third Villa goal for Delfouneso. The striker is on
the end of a flowing move, but he curls a low shot a foot or so wide of the
post with Kurucz beaten.

86 min - Collins comes close, beating Wearen but shooting too close to
Kurucz, who gathers diving low to his left.

84 min - Hines tries to break into the box but he is thwarted by Roome.
Nouble is next to threaten, but his loses out to Baker and Villa clear.

81 min - Eyjolfsson concedes possession and Villa work the ball to McGurk,
but his shot is weak and rolls through to Kurucz via a slight deflection off
Fry.

79 min - Montano is going to have a little over ten minutes to find an
equaliser as he replaces Lee.

77 min - Nice stuff from Delfouneso, who picks the ball up and cuts inside
Fry before curling a left-foot shot a couple of yards wide. Villa are
finishing strongly here.

75 min - No sign of any changes just yet from Dyer. Montano or winger Daniel
Kearns would seem the most likely options to be sent into the action, but
neither are warming up at the present time.

72 min - GOAL! Villa re-take the lead through Gardner. Lichaj launches the
free-kick into the box where it is headed straight to Gardner, who controls
on his chest and loops a volley past Kurucz via the inside of the post. That
was a very decent finish, indeed.

72 min - A booking for Josh Payne following a late challenge on substitute
Gardner. Meanwhile, Villa make their second change, replacing Hofbauer with
Adam McGurk.

71 min - News from Poland and Danny Purdy's Republic of Ireland U17s have
started the Syrenka Cup with a 2-1 defeat by Russia. Striker Purdy did not
manage to get on to the scoresheet.

70 min - Amazing stuff from Kurucz. Albrighton crosses from the right and
Collins meets the ball with a powerful header that the goalkeeper does well
to block. The ball squirms back towards Collins and he shoots, but Kurucz
half-blocks and Eyjolfsson hacks the ball off the goal-line.

68 min - Brilliant, brilliant defending from N'Gala denies Hofbauer a tap-in
after Delfouneso had left Fry in his wake and cut the ball into the six-yard
box.

67 min - When you consider Eoin Wearen is just 16, he has had a fantastic
game on his reserve-team debut. The young Dubliner has not looked at all out
of place and has given as good as he's got against Osbourne in the middle of
the park. The former Gaelic football star is certainly one to look out for
in the future.

65 min - Cristian Montano is among three substitutes warming up on the
touchline. Will the young Colombia-born forward get a late run-out?

63 min - A first change for Villa. Gary Gardner replaces Herd.

62 min - Delfouneso obviously did not like being tackled. He picks the ball
up and skips past Fry before smashing in a low drive that Kurucz does well
to push aside for a corner.

61 min - The Hammers really fancy this. Osbourne robs Wearen and tries to
play in Delfouneso, but the goalscorer is denied by a thumping challenge
from Jordan Brown. The U18 left-back has made an assured start to life as a
reserve-team player.

60 min - This is much, much better from West Ham. They are getting plenty of
men forward and moving the ball around much more quickly than they were just
a few minutes ago. When you consider that Villa have won the league in each
of the last two seasons, this is a very creditable display.

57 min - West Ham have worked their way back into things here, but they
still need to take better care of the ball in the attacking half of the
field. Too often, a promising move is being scuppered by a loose or lazy
pass. Alex Dyer preaches a fluid, passing game based on movement off the
ball, but at the moment his players are not quite getting it exactly right.
It's not all bad news, though, as his side are now more than matching their
hosts.

55 min - Great work and attitude from Hines, who loses possession but
streaks back 40 yards to challenge Lichaj. Fine stuff from the striker.

53 min - Edgar receives a yellow card for a rather late foul on Albrighton.
The winger needs a bit of treatment, but looks as if he'll be fine to
continue.

50 min - GOAL! Fry is fouled by Herd wide on the left, Edgar curls in a
vicious free-kick and Fry challenges his marker. The ball appears to hit
Collins and floats past the stranded Marshall for an own-goal. That came out
of nowhere. Now, will the goal give West Ham the confidence boost they need
to go on and take all three points?

48 min - A quiet start to the second half so far. As soon as I type that,
Albrighton lets fly with a dipping curler from 25 yards that Kurucz tips
over at full-stretch.

46 min - We're off and running again here at Villa Park. Neither side made
any changes at half-time.

Half-time

47 min - The half-time whistle goes. West Ham will have to up their
collective game after the break if they are to start the season with a
positive result.

46 min - We're into the one minute of added-time. To be fair, I thought we'd
have more than that...

45 min - Villa began the half with a goal and almost ended it with one too.
Herd picks up the ball in midfield and drives forward before shooting from
20 yards, but it flies narrowly wide of the post.

44 min - Another chance for Payne to launch a set piece into the penalty
area as Lowry is penalised for handball. Villa half-clear and Hines picks up
the loose ball. He beats two challenges but not a third and Villa smash the
ball upfield.

42 min - Nouble wins a free-kick midway inside the Villa half. Payne
crosses, but the home side are able to head clear.

40 min - Superb play from Nouble, who turned Lichaj and got to the by-line,
but none of his team-mates had anticipated the cutback and Villa clear the
danger.

38 min - Alert play again from Kurucz, who is out smartly to smother at the
feet of Hofbauer as he attempted to latch on to Collins' pass. A short time
later, Delfouneso works another shooting chance, but his powerful
half-volley flies into the seats.

36 min - Good save from Kurucz to deny Hofbauer. Delfouneso found the
Austrian in space and he lashed a low, left-foot shot that the Hungarian
parried to safety. Seconds later, Villa force a corner. Albrighton crosses
and Collins head downwards, but the ball bounces over the crossbar.
Delfouneso has really come to life again in the last few minutes. He seems
to have all the attributes of a decent striker - pace, power and an eye for
goal.

35 min - Fantastic challenge from Fry. He appeared to have lost Delfouneso,
but recovered well to concede a corner. Villa work the ball deep before
crossing to the far post. Lowry wins a header and Delfouneso lunges low to
try and direct the ball past Kurucz, but it squirms just wide of the near
post.

33 min - Nouble is seeing quite a lot of possession in and around the Villa
box, but the ball just won't break for him or any of his team-mates. So far,
Hines' first-time shot is the closest the Hammers have come to a goal. It is
certainly a more even contest now, though. After sitting on the bench for a
few minutes, Zola is escorted to the dressing room clutching an ice-pack to
his face. A bit of a shame for the youngster, but hopefully he will not be
sidelined for too long.

31 min - Youth team striker Danny Purdy was in the Republic Ireland U17 side
to face Russia in the Syrenka Cup friendly tournament in Poland this
afternoon. No news yet on a result, but I shall try and find out for you.

29 min - Nice football from Edgar and Wearen sends Hines away, and his run
is brought to an abrupt halt by a combination of Lichaj and Baker a couple
of yards outside the penalty area. Edgar takes the free-kick but curls it a
yard over the crossbar.

26 min - Hofbauer wins a corner off N'Gala. Albrighton takes and Kurucz
acrobatically palms the ball to safety.

24 min - James Collins comes close to scoring for Aston Villa. Matt Fry's
defensive header dropped to the striker on the edge of the penalty area, but
he was unable to keep his volley down.

23 min - Treatment for Zola junior this time. It looks like he has received
a bang on the nose and comes to the touchline holding a piece of tissue to
his face. Unfortunately, the bleeding doesn't appear to want to stop and he
is replaced by Eoin Wearen.

21 min - First-team coaches Steve Clarke and Kevin Keen are here to watch
the reserve team in action. Keen, of course, was reserve-team manager
himself until almost exactly a year ago, when he was promoted following the
arrival of Gianfranco Zola.

18 min - A booking for Zola on his first competitive appearance in English
football. The youngster was cautioned after a late challenge on Herd. The
Villa midfielder receives some treatment before leaving the pitch. It looks
like he'll be okay to carry on, though.

17 min - A first real chance for West Ham. Hines wins a tackle in midfield
and feeds Nouble. The big forward holds off his marker before rolling the
ball into HInes' path. The Jamaican strikes his shot well, but it is too
close to Marshall, who blocks with two hands before his defenders clear the
danger.

16 min - Hofbauer's free-kick falls to Herd inside the penalty area. The
midfielder pokes a shot goalwards and Kurucz holds well in front of his
face.

15 min - In all honesty, Villa are bossing this game. West Ham are
struggling to maintain possession of the ball in midfield. Zola gets in a
strong challenge on Herd that the Villa player takes exception to. Both
players receive a talking to from the referee before shaking hands and
getting on with it.

12 min - Another close call as right-back Eric Lichaj lifts a cross into the
box, but it is just too far in front of Delfouneso.

10 min - The pre-match deluge has abated and the sun is trying to come out.
Villa have a throw-in deep inside the Hammers half. A spot of head tennis
ends with Dominik Hofbauer looping his effort on to the top of Kurucz' net.
You can see why Villa have such a good record at reserve level, They are
playing with a real confidence.

8 min - Albrighton comes close to doubling the hosts' lead, but his curler
lands on top of the net, In truth, I think Kurucz would have had it covered.

7 min - West Ham have responded well to going behind and are starting to
ping the ball around on what is a slick surface. Nouble crosses for Hines,
but the striker's touch lets him down and Nathan Baker clears the danger.

4 min - GOAL! Not the ideal start for the Hammers as West Ham concede
possession just inside their own half. Albrighton won the ball and found
Delfouneso, who held off Zola before firing low into Kurucz' bottom
left-hand corner. A clinical finish.

3 min - It's an open start here at Villa Park. Lee and Nouble combine, but
the latter's pass skips off Hines' too and through to Andy Marshall. Lee
picks the ball up 30 yards from goal and lets fly, but it is straight at
Marshall.

2 min - A decent run from the speedy Delfouneso, who picks up the ball five
yards inside his own half and streaks past Matt Fry, but the defender
recovers well and forces the forward to slice his cross out for a goal kick.

1 min - Nathan Delfouneso and Chris Herd get us underway. Zola is given a
welcome to English football just 25 seconds in, winning a free-kick for his
side inside the centre circle.

6.59pm - Aston Villa will kick-off...

6.57pm - Here come the two teams... No Premier League-style lineups and
music here, just a quick walk to the halfway line and the two teams break
towards their respective ends. It looks like West Ham will attack a very
large, very empty Holte End in the first half.

6.54pm - A few hundred Villa fans have turned out to cheer on their
champions. While both squads have returned to their respective dressing
rooms, substitute goalkeeper Adam Street has remained on the pitch to go
through a few kicking exercises with goalkeeping coach Jerome John.

6.47pm - As he did last season, defender Bondz N'Gala will captain West
Ham's second-string. The big man will slot in at right-back tonight, with
Matt Fry and Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson in the centre of defence and Jordan Brown
at left-back.

6.41pm - I can report that it is now chucking it down with rain here at
Villa Park. The floodlights are on and, on 1 September, it appears that
summer is well and truly over!

6.40pm - West Ham brought three sons with famous fathers with them as part
of their squad for tonight's game. As well as Andrea Zola and Olly Lee -
sons of Gianfranco and Robert respectively - George Moncur also travelled
with the squad and is warming up with his club-mates on the pitch. Among
them is Zavon Hines, who is wearing some very bright blue boots. Lee is
sporting some white footwear, but the other outfield players have stuck to
the traditional black.

6.35pm - Both teams are out on the pitch here at a near-deserted Villa Park
going through their pre-match warm-ups. Leeds United assistant manager Steve
Staunton, who was a bit of a legend here as a player, has already taken his
seat in the stands.

West Ham United open their 2009/10 Barclays Premier Reserve League South
campaign with a tough-looking visit to Aston Villa tonight.

The Villans romped to the league title last season before defeating North
champions Sunderland 3-1 to lift the national title. Villa have started the
new season in equally impressive form, defeating Chelsea 4-0 in west London
last week.

However, Alex Dyer will be hopeful of building on an encouraging 2008/09
himself. The manager's first season in charge of the reserves saw the
Hammers finish in a respectable 5th position.

Tonight, Dyer has named a youthful side including forwards Frank Nouble and
Zavon Hines, both of whom impressed greatly in last Tuesday's Carling Cup
second round win over Millwall.

Under-18 left-back Jordan Brown is also included after putting in a good
display for Tony Carr's side at the weekend, while Andrea Zola will slot
into a holding midfield role after impressing Dyer in training and during
the pre-season friendly at Bishop's Stortford last month.

Transfer window update
WHUFC.com
West Ham United has updated supporters on the latest situation following the
end of the transfer window
01.09.2009

West Ham United can confirm the departure of James Collins has concluded the
club's business during the transfer window. Attempts were made on Tuesday to
finalise negotiations for another forward to complement the existing attack
that already boasts England striker Carlton Cole and was boosted further by
Alessandro Diamanti's arrival from AS Livorno Calcio on Friday. Terms were
agreed with the selling club but the player was unwilling to join.

Gianluca Nani and Gianfranco Zola are now discussing the possibility of an
out of contract striker joining the club, who has been tracked in the past
month. Further updates will be provided as and when available here on
whufc.com.

With the team next in action at Wigan Athletic on Saturday week, Zola should
have a near-full complement to choose from including the fit-again Valon
Behrami. Only Luis Boa Morte (knee) and Dean Ashton (ankle) are not in
training with the first team while Terry Dixon, the other long-term
absentee, is close to a reserves return after his long absence with knee
problems.

Collins joined Aston Villa on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee
after passing a medical on Tuesday afternoon. The Wales defender leaves the
Boleyn Ground after four years at the club, during which time the
26-year-old made 65 league and cup appearances, scoring twice.

With Matthew Upson, James Tomkins, Danny Gabbidon, Jonathan Spector and
Radoslav Kovac, a permanent signing from Spartak Moscow, already at the
club, plus Manuel Da Costa arriving from ACF Fiorentina, the manager has
good options at centre-back. The other new recruits this summer have been
goalkeeper Peter Kurucz, left-backs Fabio Daprela and Herita Ilunga and the
attacking midfielder Luis Jimenez.

West Ham United Under-18s 0-1 Stoke City Under-18s

Tony Carr's side were unlucky to lose their first home match of the 2009/10
FA Premier Academy League season.

Having won 2-1 at Everton the week before, the Hammers were frustrated at
Little Heath on Saturday afternoon. Like the Toffees tie, the Stoke match
was one of ten inter-group fixtures to be played by the U18s in their
28-game season. Carr's side will hope to bounce back with a trip to Group A
rivals Tottenham Hotspur this coming Saturday.

Cristian Montano and Ahmed Abdulla were both particularly lively up front
and had a number of chances to level matters after Stoke had taken the lead
in the first half through a a headed goal from a left-wing cross. However,
the Hammers - captained by Sergio Sanchez - were unable to take advantage of
their pressure. Nick Barrett with a decent run and shot late in the game was
perhaps the closest to an equaliser.

West Ham United: Mehmet, Driver, Brown, Lampe, Sanchez, Moncur (Werndly 70),
Barrett, Wearen, Abdulla (Hall 55), Montano, Purdy (Craig 75)
Subs not used: Loveday, Smith

Collins completes move to Villa
BBC.co.uk

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of West Ham defender James Collins
for a fee believed to be about £5m. Villa agreed a fee on Tuesday morning
and the 26-year-old Wales international later accepting personal terms.
Centre-back Collins started his career with Cardiff City before moving to
West Ham for £3.5m in July 2005. Villa are also close to signing Manchester
City central defender Richard Dunne as they look to bolster their defensive
numbers. "It's been a mad 24 hours since coming up here but I'm delighted to
have it all sorted," said Collins. "I came on Monday and met the manager and
had a look around. It's a fantastic setting. I just can't wait to get
cracking now.
"Aston Villa are a massive club so after coming here looking around the
place - and I'm friendly with a few of the boys as well - it didn't take a
lot of persuading on my part."
Collins, who turned down a move to Stoke two weeks ago after failing to
agree terms, arrived on Tuesday morning at Villa's Bodymoor Heath training
ground to try to finalise his move and complete a medical. He has featured
in all of West Ham's league games so far this season, appearing 60 times in
total during his time at the Hammers. The player, capped 28 times by his
country, made 86 appearances for Cardiff before moving to Upton Park in 2005
along with Bluebirds team-mate Danny Gabbidon. A knee ligament injury in
January 2008 kept him on the sidelines for nine months. Villa have been left
short in defence following the retirement of Martin Laursen and the sale of
Zat Knight to Bolton.

West Ham United have confirmed that one more player could yet arrive at the
club following the closure of the summer transfer window. Despite the window
closing at 5pm this afternoon, clubs are still able to sign players out of
contract and the Hammers are understood to be working on an emergency deal
following the failure to land a target man - as first revealed here on
KUMB.com earlier today.
A statement on whufc.com this evening confirmed that United had all but
concluded their summer dealings. "West Ham United can confirm the departure
of James Collins has concluded the club's business during the transfer
window," it read. "Attempts were made on Tuesday to finalise negotiations
for another forward to complement the existing attack that already boasts
England striker Carlton Cole and was boosted further by Alessandro
Diamanti's arrival from AS Livorno Calcio on Friday. Terms were agreed with
the selling club but the player was unwilling to join. "Gianluca Nani and
Gianfranco Zola are now discussing the possibility of an out of contract
striker joining the club, who has been tracked in the past month. Further
updates will be provided as and when available here on whufc.com."

The player with whom terms had been agreed is understood to be Manchester
City's out-of-favour striker Benjani Mwaruwari, who had previously been
linked with moves to Stoke City and Hull this summer. West Ham are thought
to have turned to the Zimbabwean after it became clear that earlier moves to
secure the signature of Bordeauz's Marouane Chamakh were unlikely to
succeed. The funds acquired as a result of the sale of Savio Nsereko and
James Collins could now be used to fund the transfer of Alessandro Diamanti,
who was purchased thanks to an advanced payment by club sponsors SBOBET.

Club CEO Scott Duxbury was forced to approach SBOBET for the necessary cash
after the club's current owners CB Holdings made it clear that they were not
willing to provide any investment into the playing squad - a situation that
could prove to be depressingly familiar should the mongrel group of
Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson's creditors retain control of the club.

Redknapp confirms Upson interest

Matthew Upson remains a West Ham player - despite rumours linking him with a
transfer deadline day switch to Tottenham. Tottenham - who were also
rumoured to have made eleventh hour bids for Sunderland's Anton Ferdinand
and Manchester City's Richard Dunne - were rumoured to have staged a
last-gasp move to take the England defender to White Hart Lane. However
KUMB.com has learned that despite the purported interest from North London,
the 30-year-old centre half remains a West Ham player - until the next
transfer window, at least. Harry Redknapp, when quizzed about the
speculation this evening replied: "I think Daniel [Levy] made some enquiries
but that never really got close."
Upson, who joined the Hammers in January 2007 has two years of his current
contract left to run but despite offers from West Ham has refused to extend
his contract further, leading to speculation that he would move to pastures
new during the now-closed summer transfer window. Spurs manager Harry
Redknapp is a known admirer of the former Birmingham and Luton defender and
reportedly told Hammers fans in China for the Asia Cup back in July that
Upson was one of a number of first team players offered to him during the
summer by West Ham.

The summer transfer window has officially closed - with James Collins the
only confirmed move either in or out thus far. The big centre-half, who
joined Aston Villa in a deal thought to be worth around £5million just 90
minutes ahead of the 5pm transfer deadline was the second departure from
West Ham within the last 24 hours, following Savio's sale to Fiorentina.
Despite failing to land Marouane Chamakh from Bordeaux - as revealed here on
KUMB.com earlier today - West Ham were still in the hunt for a target man
right up to the 5pm deadline, although there is no news at present to
confirm whether those efforts were successful or not. Late rumours suggested
a possible move for Manchester City's Benjani, whilst Tottenham have been
linked with a late bid for Matthew Upson.

James Collins' £5million move to Aston Villa has been confirmed. The Welsh
centre half had his transfer ratified with just 90 minutes of the transfer
window remaining and joins former Hammers Nigel Reo-Coker and Marlon
Harewood at Villa Park. The trio - who cost Villa a total of some
£17.5million - were all signed by Alan Pardew with Collins that last of the
trio to arrive at the Boleyn in the summer of 2005. Signed from Cardiff for
£1.5million, Collins made 64 first team appearances at a rate of just 16
games per season. West Ham's crippling financial situation is thught to have
triggered the sale of the popular centre-half. 20-year-old James Tomkins,
who had made just 20 first team starts is likely to be granted the
opportunity to replace Collins - who has signed a four-year deal at Villa
Park - as partner to Matthew Upson at Blackburn this weekend. Danny
Gabbidon, Radoslav Kovac and new signing Manuel da Costa will act as cover
for Upson and Tomkins.

Welsh defender puts pen to paper on four-year deal

Aston Villa have completed the signing of defender James Collins from West
Ham. The 26-year-old Wales international has moved to Villa Park on a
four-year contract. The two clubs agreed a £5million fee and the deal was
concluded after Collins completed a medical and finalised personal terms at
Villa's Bodymoor Heath training ground on Monday.
"It's been a mad 24 hours since coming up here but I'm delighted to have it
all sorted," said Collins. "I came yesterday and met the manager and had a

now. "Aston Villa is a massive club so, after coming here looking around the

Collins has made over 50 Premier League appearances since joining West Ham
from Cardiff in 2005 and has started each of the Hammers' opening three
league games this season. Villa boss Martin O'Neill was eager to boost his
defensive ranks after Martin Laursen retired at the end of last season and
Curtis Davies was sidelined with a dislocated shoulder. Collins is set to
make his Villa debut in the second city derby with Birmingham at St. Andrews
on 13th September. "I loved my time at West Ham but I believe I have taken a
step forward," he added. "I have come to Aston Villa to improve as a player
and hopefully improve their team. I'll be looking to do that straight away."

Collison ready for Russia
Hammers star will commit future to Wales
Last updated: 1st September 2009

West Ham midfielder Jack Collison will play for Wales against Russia next
week, despite the recent death of his father. The 20-year-old has also been
included in Brian Flynn's Under-21 squad for their European Championship
qualifier against Italy on Friday, but it is expected he will miss out on
that game to attend his father's funeral. Collison is not currently obliged
to play for Wales, having only collected his six caps so far in friendly
matches, and the Watford-born youngster is also qualified for England. But
John Toshack is expected to name Collison in the squad for the World Cup
qualifier against Russia, despite his family bereavement. Collison has
turned out for West Ham twice since the death of his father in a motorway
accident, against Millwall and Blackburn, and the midfielder is expected to
pledge his future to Wales.
A Football Association Wales spokesman said: "There has been a lot of
conspiracy theories that Jack has avoided competitive internationals to keep
his options open. "But the fact that he has turned up to train with the
Under-21s and wants to play against Russia says everything about his
commitment to Wales. "We were all deeply upset for him after his father's
death, and he will get all the support and comradeship he needs when he is
with the Wales squad and we are delighted that he has made it clear he wants
to play against Russia." Wales boss Toshack is also expected to call up
Craig Bellamy and Jason Koumas to his squad, as the pair have returned to
full fitness.

Reserves ready

Alex Dyer's reserve team will kick off the new season with a trip to Aston
Villa on Tuesday evening
01.09.2009

West Ham United will kick off their Barclays Premier Reserve League South
season with a trip to champions Aston Villa on Tuesday evening. Manager Alex
Dyer will hope to build on an encouraging first season in charge at Villa
Park, having guided the Hammers to fifth place in 2008/09. Dyer will have a
host of promising youngsters at his disposal this term, with the likes of
captain Bondz N'Gala and first-year professionals Matt Fry, Tony Brookes,
Olly Lee, Danny Kearns and Anthony Edgar all hoping to force their way into
Gianfranco Zola's squad. Hungary Under-21 goalkeeper Peter Kurucz, who has
been on the bench for the club's opening three Barclays Premier League
fixtures, could start between the sticks at Villa. Experienced Scotland
midfielder Nigel Quashie and Iceland U21 defender Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson may
also feature but the match is too soon for the fit-again Terry Dixon after
his long-term knee injury. Villa will present stern opposition for Dyer's
side, having romped to the league title last time around, beaten North
champions Sunderland 3-1 in the inter-divisional play-off, and opened the
2009/10 campaign with a thumping 4-0 win at Chelsea on 25 August. England
U19 defender Ciaran Clark scored twice, while lively winger Marc Albrighton
and Austrian midfielder Andreas Weimann were also on target for Kevin
MacDonald's side. Last year's meetings between the two clubs were also
shaded by Villa, who won 2-0 at Bishop's Stortford and enjoyed the better of
a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at Hinckley United FC.

Tuesday's match will kick-off at 7pm at Villa Park, with tickets being

Da Costa in for Savio
WHUFC.com
West Ham United have allowed Savio to leave for ACF Fiorentina with Manuel Da Costa heading to London
31.08.2009

West Ham United have sold Savio to ACF Fiorentina with the club receiving an undisclosed fee and Portuguese centre-back Manuel Da Costa in return from the UEFA Champions League contenders. Da Costa, 23, moves to the Boleyn Ground on a three-year contract after one season in Italy, having left Florence in January for a loan at their Serie A rivals UC Sampdoria. His home debut could come against Liverpool on Saturday 19 September, the team he played against for PSV Eindhoven in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
The French-born defender first made his name with AS Nancy-Loraine before his high-profile switch to PSV. He promptly won the Dutch title in his first season in 2006/07 and was soon being courted by some of Europe's leading clubs before heading to Fiorentina. Capped 23 times at U21 level, Da Costa has twice been named in senior squads by Portugal.
Savio's departure will see the club retain 50 per cent of his sell-on value in future. The Germany Under-20 international arrived at the Boleyn Ground in January from Brescia Calcio for an undisclosed fee. The 20-year-old made eleven appearances - ten off the substitute's bench - but failed to establish himself in the side. The emergence of Junior Stanislas also limited Savio's chances.
West Ham United CEO Scott Duxbury said: "This is a good deal for everyone concerned. Although not for the want of trying, Savio has struggled to make an impact for various reasons, while Manuel is also looking for a fresh start. We will continue to look at home and across Europe for the brightest prospects as they best fit our vision for this club's future. "Had our financial situation been different we would have preferred to have kept and developed Savio. However, we are required to make savings and our policy has always been to sell players on the fringes rather than established first-team players. With the fee we received for Savio and 50 per cent sell-on together with acquiring the highly-rated Da Costa, it represented a great deal."
West Ham have been busy in the transfer market this summer, signing the highly-regarded attack-minded Serie A players Luis Jimenez and Alessandro Diamanti from Internazionale and AS Livorno Calcio respectively. The club has also bought Herita Ilunga and Radoslav Kovac permanently after their successful loan deals last season and acquired the highly-rated trio Peter Kurucz, Fabio Daprela and Frank Nouble.

Point pleases Green
WHUFC.com
Robert Green has praised the West Ham United defenders that helped keep Blackburn Rovers at bay
31.08.2009

Robert Green was happy with how West Ham United responded to the physical threat posed by Blackburn Rovers in Saturday's goalless draw at Ewood Park. Green was rarely troubled between the sticks, largely due to some dogged defending from the four players in claret in blue in front of him. West Ham had chances of their own but Green's fellow England goalkeeper Paul Robinson was not really called into action either. "It was a grind and there wasn't too much football played by either side," Green said. "We tried but failed. If we're not going to score then the best result we can get is a nil-nil draw which is what we got. "It was one of those games were you know what is coming at you and perhaps we were so focused on what was going to come that it took away from our positive work."
Matthew Upson and James Collins were particularly impressive in dealing with aerial threat posed by the towering figures of Christopher Samba and Charles Nzonzi. "You know what is coming and we know we can deal with it. We've got four guys at the back that are decent and can deal with things and they did so on Saturday."
With England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence in attendance, Green's clean sheet will no doubt have registered on Fabio Capello's radar as he gathers his thoughts ahead of games against Slovenia and Croatia. Green rebuffed the idea that he would have preferred more action with a view to impress the England manager. "I wouldn't really have wanted more chances as a clean sheet is a clean sheet. If you go into every game and keep a clean sheet then you're a pretty good keeper. If at the start of the game you would have said I'd keep a clean sheet I would have taken that. The point, West Ham United's 700th in the Premier League, takes the Hammers' tally for the season to four, a start Green believes is fair based on the team's performances thus far. "The Tottenham [game] was disappointing. It was a competitive game and one we thought that once we'd scored we'd go on to win. It really took the wind out of their sails when we scored and likewise when they scored it took the wind out of ours. "As disappointing as last week was we've probably played well in about one and a half games and got four points. We played well at Wolves and then well in patches against Spurs. Blackburn was tough but we thought we could have played better."

Manager on Monday
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola has praised his players for producing a 'mature' display at Blackburn Rovers
31.08.2009

Gianfranco Zola is looking forward to a quieter week at Chadwell Heath as the squad reflect on a win, loss and a draw in their opening three matches of the Barclays Premier League season.

With new forward Alessandro Diamanti and fit-again midfielder Valon Behrami both set to be fully involved but eleven senior players away on international duty, the manager will have to adjust his training preparations in the wake of the goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. There is also the chance this week to run the rule over his promising youngsters in Tuesday night's opening match of the new Barclays Premier Reserve League campaign at Aston Villa.

Zola said: "We have a lot of players that are going to play with the national team. [The international break] will certainly not help them to relax but it will help those that are not going. No problem though, when they come back we are going to be ready for Wigan."

That return trip to the north-west on Saturday week will occupy the manager's thoughts entirely in the days ahead and certainly he is not fazed by things off the field - especially the transfer window. "We have had a lot of things going on but it has been like that since last year. We are going through all of these things and we are going to do good work."

The latest addition to the fold will help sharpen the focus for Wigan. "Diamanti is a good player," Zola said. "He has got a lot of talent. He is one of those players that can give us something different. I am looking forward to having him available for selection.

"He was very determined to come and play for West Ham and certainly the supporters have helped him make the decision. He is a player that can excite them and we are looking forward to having him on the pitch."

Looking back to the weekend, Zola believed his players were full-value for both the result, and a second consecutive Barclays Premier League clean-sheet on their travels. "It had been a long week with a lot of things going on, but I think we coped with it very well. I'm looking forward to the next few days when we can rest a little bit and be ready for the next game.

"I don't know if this is a game we would have lost in the past, but certainly we look very mature right now. It was a game that, for physical reasons, we could not give our best, but the players stood there strong on the pitch and didn't concede anything. So, it was a very mature performance.

"This was the third game we played in six days plus the Tuesday match was a very exhausting game, we played 120 minutes. It was tough and we found that in the second half when we dropped our performance. We defended very well though and managed to get a draw. I am happy."

With the domestic programme on hold, fan attention will of course remain on the transfer market, which will be a hive of activity ahead of the closure of the summer window. Monday's press was again full of rumour and speculation but the manager summed up that nothing would be fully known until deadline at 5pm on Tuesday. "We will see what happens," he said.

Zola brings in defender Da Costa
BBC.co.uk

West Ham have signed Fiorentina's Portuguese defender Manuel da Costa in a swap deal that involves winger Savio Nsereko moving to the Serie A club. The 23-year-old Da Costa, who was born in France, played for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven before going to Fiorentina. He played just one game for Fiorentina, joining Sampdoria on loan in January.
Nsereko, 20, joined West Ham in January for reportedly a club record £9m fee, topping the £7.5m West Ham paid Liverpool for Craig Bellamy in 2007. When the Ugandan-born German signed for West Ham, the club said they had beaten off "fierce competition" to sign him. Nsereko was named player of the tournament at the 2008 Uefa Under-19 Championship in the Czech Republic, which was won by Germany. But he failed to live up to expectations during his time at Upton Park and failed to find the net in his 11 appearances. West Ham will receive 50% of any fee received by the Viola if they sell on Nsereko. "This is a good deal for everyone concerned," West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury told the club's website. "Although not for the want of trying, Savio has struggled to make an impact for various reasons, while Manuel is also looking for a fresh start.
"Had our financial situation been different we would have preferred to have kept and developed Savio."
Hammers technical director Gianluca Nani had worked with the Germany Under-19 international when he was at Brescia. Da Costa also endured a tough time last season having joined Fiorentina in January 2008. A former target for Inter Milan and Juventus, he made just one league appearance before being sent on a six-month loan to Sampdoria. The switch failed to turn round his fortunes and he made just three appearances during his spell in Genoa.

Savio Nsereko has completed a permanent switch to Fiorentina - just six months after arriving at West Ham in a blaze of publicity. The Ugandan-born German under-19 international arrived in England during the January transfer window amidst rumours that he could cost United up to £9million (despite West Ham 's initial outlay being just a third of that). Having been given the number 10 shirt worn previously by the likes of fans' favourites Paolo Di Canio and Trevor Brooking, much was expected from a player who had been eyed by a number of top clubs. However his English dream is over after just seven months having failed to settle in London. West Ham have received an undisclosed transfer fee (thought to be worth around £3million) plus a 50 per cent sell on fee for Savio from the Serie A outfit plus defender Manuel Da Costa, who has signed a three-year contract with United.
Hammers CEO Scott Duxbury explained the decision to sell the youngster thusly: "This is a good deal for everyone concerned. Although not for the want of trying, Savio has struggled to make an impact for various reasons, while Manuel is also looking for a fresh start. We will continue to look at home and across Europe for the brightest prospects as they best fit our vision for this club's future. West Ham are set to confirm the departure of Savio in a swap deal for Fiorentina's Manuel Da Costa. Savio has failed to settle since his arrival in January 2009 and has not featured in Gianfranco Zola's recent plans. The fee has not been disclosed but the club has confirmed that they will receive 50% of the player's sell-on value. Coming the other way is central defender Manuel da Costa. The French-born 23 year-old has been capped by the Portuguese U21 side. Though he has been picked for the full squad on two occasions, he has yet to play for the full side. Da Costa, who arrived in Florence from PSV Eindhoven, has been out of favour at Fiorentina and, like Savio has made few first team appearances in recent months. The arrival of Da Costa will increase the likelihood that one of either Matthew Upson or James Collins will be on their way over the next 24 hours. The club are believed to have received bids of £8m from Fiorentina for Upson, and £5m from Villa for James Collins. The Collins/Villa deal would appear to be the more likely at the moment, given that the alleged bid is closer to the Club's valuation of the player than the Fiorentina bid for Upson. Any funds released from such a sale may go towards boosting Zola's striking options.

The waiting game

West Ham United is still likely to make changes to the first team squad ahead of tomorrow's 5pm transfer deadline - although much depends on possible departures.

The Hammers, who were forced to turn to sponsors SBOBet in order to afford the fee for Allesandro Diamanti from Livorno last week remain in close contact with a number of potential targets although much depends on who the club can offload first.

Central defender James Collins, who was watched by both Martin O'Neill and David Moyes at the weekend and has an asking price of some £5million is still the hot favourite to depart although as of this morning, no firm bid from either Aston Villa or Everton has been forthcoming.

Rumours regarding an opening £8million bid from Fiorentina for Matthew Upson have now been confirmed although West Ham remain committed to not selling the England international leave for anything less than £15million. KUMB.com also understand that enquiries have been made for a number of other first team squad members although as with Upson and Collins, nothing has been concluded as of yet.

With regards to incoming transfers, the potential for adding a further striker to Gianfranco Zola's first team squad appears to be diminishing as following the arrival of Diamanti, any major signing is now dependent on the successful sale of existing player/s first.

One striker strongly linked with the Hammers in recent weeks - Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh - is understood to remain interested in a pre-deadline day move to the Boleyn, despite reports to the contrary emanating from France in the past few days. However fresh rumours regarding moves for Sunderland's Phil Bardsley and Valencia's giant striker Nicola Zigic are thought to be wide of the mark.

The Hammers are also thought to be keeping tabs on a number of defensive targets as replacements for possible departures, although any such arrivals are likely to be on a loan basis as opposed to permanent transfers.

Viola confirm Hammers swap talks
Savio to swap with Da Costa

Fiorentina have confirmed they are in talks with West Ham about a swap deal involving Manuel Da Costa and Savio. As revealed by skysports.com over the weekend, West Ham have lined up a swap deal for Portuguese defender Da Costa which will see striker Savio move in the opposite direction. West Ham are keen to bolster their defensive options with doubts surrounding the futures of James Collins and Matt Upson and Da Costa could help fill the void if either player leaves before the close of the transfer window. Savio has struggled to make an impact in England since joining West Ham from Brescia in January and the Hammers are prepared to let him return to Italy. Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino confirmed the talks but said the deal has yet to be completed. "Da Costa is not yet of West Ham," said Corvino. "They asked for him and we have considered adding Savio in the negotiations, which could be seen as an investment for Fiorentina."
Meanwhile, Fiorentina have confirmed the transfer of midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic to Stuttgart on a permanent basis in a reported seven million euros (£6.15million) deal.

Villa make Collins bid

Sky Sports sources understand Aston Villa have made a bid for West Ham defender James Collins. Collins' future at Upton Park has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks with the Welsh international holding talks with Stoke earlier this month. West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola revealed over the weekend Villa were interested in signing Collins and they have now firmed up their interest with an offer for the central defender. Villa chief Martin O'Neill has been searching for defensive reinforcements all summer after losing Martin Laursen and Zat Knight and he is hoping to bring in Collins to help bolster his ranks. The Hammers are resigned to losing Collins as the club look to trim their squad and the former Cardiff man seems set to depart Upton Park before the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday.

Fiorentina fail in swoop for centre-half

Sky Sports News understands that West Ham have turned down a bid from Fiorentina for Matthew Upson. The Serie A giants have been strongly linked with the centre-half of late and are believed to have made their move on Italian transfer deadline day. Much has been made of the financial turmoil at Upton Park in recent times, leading to speculation of imminent exits. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola insists he is under no pressure to sell, though, and has made it clear that he will not be parting with key men. That includes England international Upson, who has hinted this summer that he would be prepared to take on a fresh challenge should the opportunity arise. A move to Fiorentina would offer him the chance to compete in the UEFA Champions League, but West Ham have snubbed the Viola's initial advance.

Viola secure swap deal
Da Costa heads to Upton Park as Savio returns to Italy

Fiorentina have announced that Manuel da Costa has joined West Ham United with forward Savio Nsereko heading in the opposite direction. Skysports.com revealed on Sunday that a deal involving the duo was in the offing before the close of the transfer window. And now the Serie A club have confirmed a swap agreement has been reached between the two sides. Savio, 20, has struggled to make an impact in England since joining the Hammers from Brescia for £9million in January. The addition of 23-year-old Da Costa, meanwhile, at Upton Park will serve as valuable defensive depth for the campaign ahead. "This is a good deal for everyone concerned," West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury told club's official website. "Although not for the want of trying, Savio has struggled to make an impact for various reasons, while Manuel is also looking for a fresh start. "We will continue to look at home and across Europe for the brightest prospects as they best fit our vision for this club's future. "Had our financial situation been different we would have preferred to have kept and developed Savio. "However, we are required to make savings and our policy has always been to sell players on the fringes rather than established first-team players. "With the fee we received for Savio and 50% sell-on together with acquiring the highly-rated Da Costa, it represented a great deal."

Aston Villa's bid for West Ham defender Collins is accepted
Sep 1 2009 by Mathew Kendrick, Birmingham Post

Aston Villa are confident of completing the capture of James Collins before the transfer window closes this evening after having a bid accepted for the West Ham United central defender. Martin O'Neill is set to discuss personal terms with the Wales international today after a deal believe to be in the region of £5 million was agreed with Hammers counterpart Gianfranco Zola. The surprise swoop for 26-year-old Collins will not affect Villa's pursuit of Richard Dunne with O'Neill also optimistic of concluding the protracted signing of the Manchester City captain today. Newport-born Collins, who has been capped 30 times by Wales, made his name at Cardiff City before joining West Ham as part of a £3.5 million deal also including Daniel Gabbidon in 2005. Despite losing Martin Laursen and Zat Knight, O'Neill was only contemplating bringing in one central defender because he has faith in youth team graduates Ciaran Clark and Shane Lowry. Clark justified his manager's confidence with a fine debut in Sunday's home win against Fulham, while Lowry has made several impressive cameo appearances already this season. However, the ongoing shoulder problems of Curtis Davies, who is scheduled to see a specialist this week to ascertain if he requires an operation, have prompted O'Neill to recruit more cover. Currently, Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar is the only fit senior defender at the club.

LONDON - West Ham United have swapped their Germany Under-20 forward Savio for Fiorentina's Portuguese centre-back Manuel Da Costa and an undisclosed fee. The Premier League club have signed former PSV Eindhoven and AS Nancy defender Da Costa, 23, on a three-year contract, they said on their website. The French-born defender has twice been named in the Portugal squad. The club will retain 50 percent of his sell-on value after the 20-year-old arrived at the Boleyn Ground in January from Brescia for an undisclosed fee. "Had our financial situation been different we would have preferred to have kept and developed Savio," said West Ham United chief executive Scott Duxbury.
"However, we are required to make savings and our policy has always been to sell players on the fringes rather than established first-team players. "With the fee we received for Savio and 50 percent sell-on together with acquiring the highly-rated Da Costa, it represented a great deal."
West Ham had already bought Serie A forwards Luis Jimenez and Alessandro Diamanti from Inter Milan and Livorno respectively in the transfer window. They have also permanently signed Congo left back Herita Ilunga from Toulouse and Spartak Moscow's Czech Republic midfielder Radoslav Kovac after successful loan deals.

Aston Villa close in on West Ham's £5m defender James Collins
Villa need defensive cover for sidelined Curtis Davies
Richard Dunne also set to sign for £6m
The Guardian, Monday 31 August 2009 Article history

Martin O'Neill has moved to compensate for the potential loss of Curtis Davies for three months with the £5m signing of West Ham United defender James Collins. The Aston Villa manager will conclude the transfer of the Wales international in the next 24 hours, along with a £6m move for Manchester City defender Richard Dunne to significantly strengthen his defensive options.

Davies will see a specialist in the next 24 hours and is expected to be advised to have surgery on a shoulder he has dislocated three times in the last 12 months. That would have left O'Neill with just one experienced central defender in Spaniard Carlos Cuéllar, following the retirement of Martin Laursen and the £3.5m sale of Zat Knight to Bolton Wanderers.

O'Neill has been determined to bring in defensive cover all season, but failed in a move for Thomas Vermaelen and lost out to Everton over Sylvain Distin. "I hope to do things before the transfer deadline. I will spend what I have available. There will not be a question of keeping anything back," said O'Neill. "The situation with Curtis highlights the area where we need to strengthen and we are working to do that."

O'Neill watched Collins against Spurs last eight days ago and the defender was also interesting Everton and Stoke City as West Ham made it clear they were prepared to sell to raise revenue at Upton Park. Collins held talks with Stoke manager Tony Pulis recently but was unable to agree personal terms over a move to the Britannia Stadium.

West Ham apologise to Millwall over behaviour of director
Monday, 31 August 2009
By Toby Porter
SouthLondonToday.co.uk

WEST Ham's chief execuive has apologised to Millwall over the behaviour of one of their directors during the match between the sides last week. But Millwall Supporters Club don't mind what Gianluca Nani did - in fact they would like to see their own board do the same sort of thing.

Millwall: no invite to Upton Park security meetings
The Times
Nick Szczepanik

Millwall claim that they were not consulted about security arrangements for their Carling Cup match against West Ham United last week, despite their extensive experience and expertise in dealing with potential hooliganism.

The Coca-Cola League One club contacted West Ham soon after the draw was made for the tie at Upton Park, at which a Millwall season ticket-holder was stabbed and 13 people arrested. However, they were told that decisions were being dictated by the police and were not invited to meetings of the safety advisory group, a body that includes representatives of the local authority, the emergency services and the Football Licensing Authority.

This was a departure from recent practice, in which representatives of both clubs had attended meetings before league matches in the Championship at the New Den and Upton Park. "We were never invited to any of the planning and preparation meetings at all this time," a Millwall source said.

Millwall officials had held a brainstorming session on Thursday, August 13, the morning after the draw was made, and came up with a number of suggestions, including an early kick-off, and the closing of pubs around Upton Park.

An early kick-off, at any time between 3pm and 5pm, would have affected the gate, but the absence of supporters unable to arrange time off work would have been counterbalanced to some extent by the school holidays, which would have allowed children to see the match.

Millwall also believe that crowd control would have been easier in daylight, and that excesses fuelled by all-day drinking would have been dramatically curbed. In the event, pubs were not closed, with The Queens, in Green Street, close to the stadium, a focus for trouble on the night.

The size of Millwall's ticket allocation was also, they believe, a factor in the trouble that occurred. The club requested 3,000 tickets, to be sold exclusively to season ticket-holders, even though Carling Cup regulations entitled them to 5,800. West Ham agreed to Millwall's request, but were overruled by police, who restricted the allocation to 1,500.

Many people who had been unable to buy tickets travelled anyway in expectation of buying from touts, with thousands milling around the streets close to the stadium, even though Underground stations closest to Upton Park had been closed — which Millwall would have advised against if consulted. According to Millwall, the stabbed fan — a retired fireman attending the match with nine family members — had got off a train three stations short of Upton Park and been misdirected into hostile territory.

Millwall had expressed their concerns about ticketing to the FA, the Football League and the Football Licensing Authority. As a result, a second meeting of the safety advisory group — again with Millwall not invited — decided that a further 800 tickets would be made available for visiting supporters.

Millwall were asked by the FA for an interim report by 5pm last Wednesday — the day after the match — and must submit a full report this week. However, they have still not been contacted for their observations either by West Ham or the police.

A West Ham spokesman said: "Investigations are continuing. West Ham United take all the issues around the game very seriously and will comment as and when appropriate."

Aston Villa to sign West Ham's James Collins
James Collins will have a medical at Aston Villa on Tuesday ahead of a £5 million move before the transfer window closes at 5pm while his present club, West Ham United, are adamant that they will not sell Matthew Upson.
The Times

On a busy day for West Ham the Premier League club sold Savio Nsereko to Fiorentina for £3 million. They will also receive 50 per cent of any sell-on for the German under-21 international who arrived at Upton Park in January, from Brescia, but has failed to make an impact.

In return West Ham have signed the Portuguese central defender Manuel Da Costa. The 23 year-old will replace Collins in the squad with James Tomkins expected to step up and become Upson's regular partner in central defence.

Telegraph player rater West Ham rejected an £8 million from Fiorentina for Upson on Sunday but continued negotiations with the Italian club after they also expressed an interest in Savio. The striker could have become West Ham's record signing – his fee was set to rise to £9 million had incentives and targets been met – but he has failed to make the first-team squad. It appears that West Ham have now pretty much recouped their initial outlay for Savio.

His reputation has remained intact in Italy while Da Costa, who has also played for PSV Eindhoven, has previously been included in the full Portugal squad. The move for Da Costa – who arrives for free – ends West Ham's interest in another Portuguese defender, Wolfsburg's Ricardo Costa who they had discussed taking on loan.

There has been interest in Upson throughout the summer with Villa, Manchester City and Everton also making inquiries for the 30-year-old England international while Liverpool met West Ham's £15 million asking price only for their bankers to pull the plug on the deal.

With the sale of Collins, a 26-year-old Welsh international, to Villa and Savio's departure, West Ham do not need to sell any more players and will reject any deadline-day offers for their captain should any be received.

West Ham have signed Alessandro Diamanti from Livorno for £6 million and remain in the market for taking another striker on loan before the window closes.

They remain interested in Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh but will not sign him this summer.

West Ham sign Manuel Da Costa from Fiorentina as Savio Nsereko goes other way

Fiorentina announced the completion of both deals this evening as the transfer window moved in to it's final 24 hours. Germany Under-21s international Savio returns to Italy just seven months after joining West Ham from Brescia for a fee of around £9 million. Premier League fixtures He struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, and West Ham will hope Portuguese centre-back Da Costa is better equipped to adapt to English football. West Ham will receive around £5 million in the deal. Manager Gianfranco Zola will face an anxious wait to see if Upson will remain at Upton park. Several other clubs have inquired about the central defender who covets Champions League football, something Fiorentina could offer this season, but they would have to dramatically improve their bid. The Upson offer was dismissed out of hand with Fiorentina, who are in Liverpool's Champions League group, making a bid that barely covers half the £15m valuation which has been put on the England international. West Ham remain in talks with Aston Villa who have expressed an interest in signing defender James Collins, who is available for £5m, before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

England call trio again
WHUFC.com
Fabio Capello has again given international calls to Robert Green, Matthew
Upson and Carlton Cole
30.08.2009

Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole could all play their part in
England reaching the 2010 FIFA World Cup after being called again by Fabio
Capello.

The trio have been regulars under the Italian head coach of late and were
always expected to feature in the 24-man selection to play a friendly at
home against Slovenia this Saturday before the all-important qualifier
against Croatia on Wednesday week. Should Capello's side win that Group Six
encounter they will be certain of a place at the finals in South Africa.

The 29-year-old Green has started the last three internationals and has five
caps to his name. His form has been tremendous at the start of the new club
season, with clean sheets in the away win and draw at Wolverhampton
Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers respectively. Upson, 30, is the most
experienced of the trio. He has 15 caps and one goal for his country, and
could get the nod to replace the injured Rio Ferdinand.

Up front, the 25-year-old Cole has retained his place after his excellent
substitute's cameo in the last friendly - a 0-0 draw in the Netherlands on
12 August. That was his third international cap although he is yet to find
the net. He is up and running for West Ham though, with a superb strike
against Tottenham Hotspur a week ago in front of the watching Capello.

Cole tipped to shine
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola expects Carlton Cole to be an important figure over the
coming weeks and months
30.08.2009

Gianfranco Zola has backed Carlton Cole to return from international duty
firing on all cylinders. Cole has been the spearhead of Zola's West Ham
United side so far this season, scoring a memorable goal against Tottenham
Hotspur and helping the Hammers to attain positive results against
Wolverhampton Wanderers, Millwall and Blackburn Rovers.
The 25-year-old also put in an action-packed display for England in the 2-2
friendly draw in the Netherlands earlier this month. However, after playing
three matches in the space of six days, the manager admitted his England
striker was not at his best as Saturday's hard-fought goalless draw at Ewood
Park, approached its conclusion. Cole is again part of Fabio Capello's squad
for the friendly international with Slovenia on Saturday and FIFA World Cup
qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday week, both of which will be played at
Wembley. Zola expects his No1 forward to be a potent threat for both club
and country over the coming weeks and months. "In the first half at
Blackburn he was bright and he was dangerous, but in the second half,
obviously, he didn't have the same standard because of the games he has
played during the week. "You know, with Carlton, I am always really
demanding because I know he can do much better than this, but it is okay. He
was alright and I'm sure he'll be a player who will perform very well for us
this year."

national-team duty takes centre stage

Gianfranco Zola will have to do without a number of players this coming week
because of international duty. As usual, whufc.com will provide full updates
on all the club's national-team players whenever and wherever they are in
action.

Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole
Mainstays of the senior squad, Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole
are all in with a good chance of facing Slovenia this Saturday in a friendly
before the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday week.
Green, 29, has five caps so far, Upson, 30, has 15 appearances while Cole
has played three times at senior level. Both fixtures are at Wembley, with
the second potentially being the fixture that sees England book their place
at the South Africa finals. Fabio Capello's team have won their first seven
fixtures in UEFA qualifying.

Jonathan Spector
After a summer to remember with the United States, Jonathan Spector is
hoping to win his 19th and 20th caps with two important 2010 FIFA World Cup
qualifiers against El Salvador in Utah on Saturday and away to Trinidad and
Tobago on Wednesday week. Still only 23, the versatile Spector played every
minute as the US reached the FIFA Confederations Cup final in July. In
CONCACAF qualifying, the top three teams will reach South Africa
automatically and the US currently occupy third place, although the nation
in fourth will go into a play-off.

Danny Gabbidon, James Collins and Jack Collison
With the squad yet to be named, the club's three Welsh internationals could
all face a major date on Wednesday week when Wales try to keep alive slim
hopes of reaching the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals with the visit of Russia.
The 30-year-old Danny Gabbidon has 41 caps while the 26-year-old James
Collins is hoping for his 31st apppearance. Before then, the 20-year-old
Jack Collison, who already has six senior caps, will definitely be on U21
duty on Friday 4 September after dropping down to help Wales in their UEFA
European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Italy in Swansea.

James Tomkins and Junior Stanislas
Tomkins and Stanislas will aim to help England Under-21s take the first step
towards the 2011 UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark. The Young Lions
begin their Group 9 qualifiers against FYR Macedonia in Prilep on Friday
before heading to Athens to take on Greece four days later. Tomkins has four
caps to his name, while Stanislas made his debut against the Netherlands
earlier this month in a friendly. Club-mate Freddie Sears - on loan at
Crystal Palace - is also involved in the squad.

Savio
The 20-year-old forward has been named in the Germany Under-20 squad to face
South Africa in Pirmasens this Saturday but it remains to be seen whether he
will be able to join up with his country. The 20-year-old forward, capped
twice at this level previously, has been unwell over the past fortnight with
a virus, a frustrating start to the new season after an intensive summer
training programme. Germany have qualified for the FIFA U20 World Cup
between 24 September and 16 October.

Fabio Daprela
The 19-year-old left-back, who was an unused substitute in the Carling Cup
tie with Millwall, has headed back to Switzerland for a training camp with
his country's Under-19s - having played for them at the 2009 UEFA European
Under-19 Championship in Ukriane earlier this summer. The Swiss will play
Georgia twice in friendlies over three days - with the first fixture on
Wednesday and the second on Friday. Daprela is the only overseas-based
player in his country's squad.

Danny Purdy
Academy striker Danny Purdy is in the Republic of Ireland Under-17 squad to
compete in an eight-nation friendly tournament in Poland from Monday to
Friday.

Matthew Upson, Rob Green and Carlton Cole have once again been called up to
Fabio Capello's England squad. The Hammers trio, who were all in the squad
for England's recent 2-2 draw with Holland have kept their places in the 24
man selection for the forthcoming clashes with Slovenia and Croatia. England
face the Slovenians at Wembley next Saturday in a friendly, before taking on
Croatia at the same venue the following Wednesday - a game that should
England win, will guarantee Capello's side a place in next summer's World
Cup finals in South Africa. With Rio Ferdinand out of the squad through
injury, Upson is favourite to step in and partner captain John Terry for the
two games. Rob Green, who has kept goal for Capello in England's last two
outings faces stiff competition from Manchester United's Ben Foster for a
starting berth whilst Carlton Cole will battle Jermain Defoe and Emile
Heskey for the chance to partner shoe-in Wayne Rooney in attack. However
there was once again no place for last season's KUMB Player of the Year,
Scott Parker, nor Mark Noble who had been considered an outside bet to make
the 24-man cut.

Hammers plot swap deal
Zola closes on stopper as Savio bids farewell

Skysports.com understands West Ham and Fiorentina have come to an
arrangement that will see Savio move back to Italy and Manuel da Costa head
in the opposite direction to Upton Park. The swap deal is only on a loan
basis and will be until the end of the current campaign, when both parties
will then reassess the situation. Savio has struggled to establish himself
since joining the Hammers in a big money move from Brescia in January. West
Ham boss Gianfranco Zola conceded earlier in the summer that the 19-year-old
had failed to adapt to the physical demands and pace of English football but
was hopeful he would do so given time. However, it now looks likely he will
return to Serie A for the rest of the current campaign as West Ham close on
a deal for central defender Da Costa. The talented Portugal Under 21
international is keen on a move to England and has previously attracted
attention from Sunderland. Da Costa spent the second half of last season
on-loan at Sampdoria. Fiorentina have been linked with West Ham defender
Matthew Upson, but skysports.com has since learnt the England international
is unlikely to leave East London for Italy.

West Ham take craving for quiet life to extreme
Blackburn 0 West Ham 0Chris Brereton, Ewood Park
The Times

A turbulent week for West Ham United finished in more docile circumstances
after an encounter with Blackburn Rovers that has no doubt already been
forgotten by those unfortunate enough to be there.

Gianfranco Zola's side were desperately keen to move into sunnier uplands,
so it is a shame that they were abject on Saturday — with Blackburn as bad,
if not worse.

"It's been a long week with a lot of things going on," Zola said. "I think
we coped very well and we're looking forward to these next few days where we
can rest a little bit and be ready for the next game.

"Today we couldn't give our best for physical reasons, but the players stood
strong on the pitch and didn't concede anything, so it's a very mature
performance." Mature it may have been, but cultured it was not, with
free-flowing, entertaining football at a premium.

Carlton Cole and Luis Jiménez attempted the occasional foray forward, and
Cole squandered West Ham's best chance in the first half by firing over from
close in, but it seemed that a point was all they came for — and all they
got. From that point of view the afternoon was a success, but on every other
point this was a shocker.

Blackburn were no better and failed to raise their game in front of a
restless Ewood Park crowd questioning why Jason Roberts is the only man up
front. Roberts will run all afternoon, but it is becoming increasingly clear
that the role of lone striker is not for him.

He needs help and quickly if Blackburn are to score more frequently than the
solitary goal they have netted this term, and that was from Gaël Givet, a
defender, against Sunderland. David Hoilett, 19, the substitute, showed
glimpses of talent to raise the game above the turgid and David Dunn,
playing in his first Barclays Premier League game in four months after
injury, was impressive.

However, apart from that, Blackburn have some serious questions to answer.
"The creating of chances is not a concern, the taking of chances is a big
concern," Sam Allardyce, the manager, said. "We've played three games, we've
created a whole host of chances over those three matches and we've only
scored one goal from our centre half.

"We got the clean sheet, though, so we've got at least one point on the
board, which reflects the fact that we are off and running. We've got to try
to get two players into double figures this year. It's a must for a
successful season and based on the statistics that we look at, that is an
absolute necessity."

West Ham To Swap Savio For Fiorentina's Manuel Da Costa - Report
The striker could be heading back to Serie A, as the Hammers look to
reinforce their rearguard...
Aug 30, 2009 10:15:46 PM

West Ham United could be set to off load striker Savio, who has not really
properly acclimatised to English football since his move from Brescia in
January, and allow the player to return to Italy with Fiorentina. In return,
the Hammers will receive Portuguese Under-21 international defender Manuel
Da Costa, with both deals being loans that will last for the rest of the
season, according to Sky Sports. Nineteen-year-old Savio is highly-rated by
Irons boss Gianfranco Zola, who nevertheless conceded that the youngster is
finding the physical demands of English football difficult to cope with
currently, though he hopes he will adapt given time. Da Costa spent the
second half of last season on loan at Sampdoria, and has previously been
linked with a move to Sunderland. Firorentina were earlier today linked with
a move for West Ham centre-back Matthew Upson, named in the England squad
again today, but Sky is now claiming that such a switch is looking
increasingly unlikely.

GREEN'S SIZEABLE PROBLEM
Daily Express
Monday August 31,2009
By Tony Paskin Have your say(0)

ROBERT GREEN is desperate for West Ham to add new players ahead of
tomorrow's transfer deadline after claiming that the size of their squad
could hamper their progress.
With Tottenham and Manchester City both taking great strides, Green admits
that last year's flirtation with the Europa League places will be harder to
repeat. Zola has brought in Radoslav Kovac, Luis Jiminez (loan) and, last
week, striker Alessandro Diamanti, but Green fears that if West Ham have
only Diamanti and Carlton Cole as their attacking options, it will mean a
long, hard campaign. He said: "We have doubled the striker tally now. But
it would be nice to have three strikers. It will be harder to get into
Europe this season because we have a smaller squad and other teams have
strengthened. "The same few guys are going to have to battle hard throughout
the season." West Ham made only four changes on Saturday to the side who
were taken to extra-time in the 3-1 win over Millwall in midweek, and it
showed as they tired in the closing stages. The introduction of Junior
Hoilett, 19, on the hour nearly turned the game for Blackburn. His movement
made an immediate difference and he twice went close late on. Canadian
striker Hoilett has been with Rovers since the age of 13 and has spent the
past two seasons on loan in Germany's second division with SC Paderborn and
St Pauli. Midfielder David Dunn was quick to compare Hoilett with a former
West Ham player. Dunn said: "I'd say he's very similar to Jermain Defoe. He
did well in Germany and he's going to be a good player for us."

Blackburn (4-5-1): Robinson 6; Jacobsen 7, Samba 6, Givet 5, Chimbonda 6;
Andrews 6, Dunn 8, Grella 7, Nzonzi 6 (Hoilett 60, 5), Pedersen 5; Roberts 5
(Kalinic 75, 6). Booked: Dunn.

Fiorentina to bid today for West Ham defender Upson
31.08.09 | tribalfootball.com

Fiorentina are interested in West Ham United defender Matthew Upson. The
Viola could move for the England international today as they seek to bolster
their defence before the summer market shuts. Manchester City and Everton
are also keen, but Fiorentina can offer Upson Champions League football,
says Sky Sports.

Villa boss O'Neill targets West Ham pair Upson, Collins
31.08.09 | tribalfootball.com

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill wants to make another defensive signing. The
Daily Mail says Villa boss Martin O'Neill wants to sign either Matthew Upson
or James Collins from West Ham before tomorrow's deadline. Wales
international Collins is the cheaper option at around £5m, with England's
Upson likely to cost twice the amount. Upson has also emerged as a surprise
target for Fiorentina, but Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola will only let one of
his centre-backs leave Upton Park.

West Ham keeper Green: We need more strikers
31.08.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green hopes the club can sign more
strikers before tomorrow's deadline. Despite signing Alessandro Diamanti
from Livorno for £6m, West Ham are still badly in need of more strikers to
play alongside Carlton Cole and goalkeeper Green said: "We've doubled the
striker tally now! "Hopefully come Tuesday, without wanting to put any
pressure on anybody, it would be nice to have three strikers."

West Ham boss Zola: Give me two more strikers
31.08.09 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola admits he still hopes to add to his
squad before tomorrow's transfer deadline. He said: "There are still two
days before the market closes and I'm still on my toes. "I would love to
keep all the team I have and add a striker or maybe two that I need. "There
are things to be considered at the club and, to be honest, I don't know what
is going to happen."
