Serious business for Zola
WHUFC.com
The manager is determined his team will give the Barclays Asia Trophy the
respect it deserves
28.07.2009

Gianfranco Zola has spoken of the positive experience of taking part in the
Barclays Asia Trophy and reiterated his belief the club will be well
equipped for a good season.

The manager was speaking before the opening match of the four-team
tournament on Wednesday evening when West Ham United take on Tottenham
Hotspur in the Beijing Workers Stadium. The contest will be played to a
finish on the night, with penalties possible if the match is all-square
after 90 minutes. Zola will be allowed to use six substitutes - one of which
being a goalkeeper - from his 23-man squad.

A brisk training session at the stadium on Tuesday night saw the whole squad
put through their paces with the emphasis very much on close control and
neat passing. Carlton Cole was particularly involved and should be ready to
spearhead the Hammers attack. He also joined Zola for the pre-match press
conference and for more from the England striker, click here.

The manager said his team had adapted well to the heat and humidity of the
Chinese capital. "So far the experience has been good," he said. "It is a
difficult time of the year because we had a very hard pre-season [training
camp in Austria] so these games are going to be very important. They will
allow us to be in the condition for the start of the season so we are hoping
that everything is going to be perfect from a physical point of view."

As was clear from the attitude of Tottenham, and the teams meeting in
Wednesday night's other contest - Hull City and 'hosts' Beijing Guoan -
everyone taking part is clearly up for the cup. The winners of the two ties
will meet in Friday's final. The manager added: "It is important for us to
play very competitive games. I am hoping the formula will make it more
interesting, more valuable for the teams.

"I am really hoping that it will be a proper game and we are going to give
100 per cent. That is what we want. We know that we want to get in perfect
shape for the beginning of the season so we need to play real games. I hope
the formula is right for this and anyway we will take it very seriously.

"We certainly didn't come here for an exhibition. We came here to play a
real game, a proper game."

The manager is in good spirits for the 2009/10 Barclays Premier League and
is unfazed by the prospect of competing with big-spending rivals back home.
"I believe that in football you can achieve also great results working with
a different way," he said. "It will certainly take longer but you can still
achieve results working with young players, trying to develop them, taking
care of them and making them better.

"That is the kind of policy that West Ham want to take and I am very
committed to it. I strongly believe that football is not only about money. I
believe that there are teams that can achieve good results using other
systems. I hope it is going to be like this ... it is good to see football
is not just about how much money you can spend but is also about how much
effort you can put into working with players and making them better. That is
the West Ham policy."

Returning to the task at hand, the manager was well aware of the threat
posed by Chinese pace-setters Beijing. "I know they are doing very well this
year. At the moment, they are the top of the league. I can't say I know them
as well as I know Tottenham but I know it is a good team and also have some
foreign players. It is going to be an interesting game to see how they can
handle Hull City.

"I know Chinese football is improving and I wish this is a good opportunity
for them to compare their level with the European level and it is a good
experience for us as well to see what the competition level is over here."

Cole fired up for Spurs
WHUFC.com
Carlton Cole cannot wait for the opening game of the Barclays Asia Trophy
against Tottenham Hotspur
28.07.2009

Carlton Cole is relishing the chance to play Tottenham Hotspur in the
Barclays Asia Trophy as he is hoping to go some way towards avenging last
season's Premier League defeats.

West Ham United will face their London rivals in what will be the first home
game of the new season on 23 August, but for now Cole is just focusing on
trying to beat Tottenham for a place in the final of the prestigious
pre-season tournament being staged in Beijing. The winners will meet either
Hull City or Beijing Guoan on Friday night, with a play-off held before to
decide the third-placed team.

The England striker said: "It is strange to have come all the way to China
to play them, but we are really looking forward to it and we really want to
win.

"It is going to be great playing them here. There is always a lot of passion
and emotions in these games for us and for our fans. Wednesday will be no
different.

"Last season they beat us twice and I can tell you, we were not happy about
that. So the aim is to get off to a good start here in this pre-season game
and then look to continue this with a good start in the new season."

The 25-year-old striker, who scored ten league goals last season, said he
was well aware of the expectation on him and the club.

"A London derby is always a special thing between Tottenham and West Ham.
The rivalry is always going to be there. I have had a few fans when I was
back in London saying that we have got to win this game. It is a very
special experience for everybody that is connected with the clubs on both
sides. Tottenham are going to want to beat us, especially as they did the
double over us last year ,and it will be a good time to start to win games
against them.

"I think we are going to present ourselves well. It is going to be a
competitive game. We are going to have a lot of fans to help the atmosphere.
We are going to try and play fairly and positively, and give the Chinese
audience a good spectacle to watch."

As well as looking forward to the action starting on the pitch, Cole has
been amazed at the welcome the Chinese have given the team since their
arrival on Monday morning and says how he wants to win the trophy with West
Ham, just like he did with Chelsea back in 2003.

"When I first came here, to Asia, I thought it was a great experience then
and now coming to China, it is the same. We received a fantastic welcome, it
has just been amazing. The conditions are different, it is humid but you
just have to adapt. The reason we are here is to play football in a country
like this for West Ham and let them see what the Premier League is about.

"I don't think people realise just how big the Premier League is, how well
known it is around the world, not until you come to a place like this.

"They know your name and everything, I was thinking, 'how the hell do they
know me?' But it is because so many people here are tuning in to watch our
matches in the Premier League. I mean, when we arrived at the airport,
people were greeting us and congratulating us, knew our names. It was quite
overwhelming really, but I can tell you, all the boys appreciate that - it
was really something.

"I want to try and take in everything about China, I want to experience the
culture of the country, and it's exciting to be here."

While Cole is looking to make the experience a lasting one in every way,
taking the trophy back to east London is certainly the main motivation.

"I won the trophy with Chelsea and I definitely want to win it again with
West Ham. It will be something special and a great way to start the season
if we can do this."

Hall opens with draw

Robert Hall's England U17s opened the Nordic Tournament with a 1-1 draw with
Denmark
28.07.2009

West Ham United's Robert Hall helped England's Under-17s open their Nordic
International Youth Tournament challenge with a 1-1 draw with Denmark.
Striker Hall, who does not turn 16 until 20 October, was part of the Young
Lions squad at the Moan Stadium in Trondheim on Wednesday. The result marked
a huge improvement on the last time the two sides met, when Denmark ran out
6-1 winners at last season's Nordic Tournament in Kungshamn, Sweden. England
will take on the Faroe Islands at the Tydal Stadium on Wednesday at 5.30pm
UK time before completing their complement of Group A fixtures against
Norway at the Overlands Minde Stadium at the same time on Friday 31 July.
Norway beat the Faroe Islands 7-0 at the Verdal Stadion, with Havard Neilsen
scoring four goals, in Wednesday's other Group A game. Group B contains
Finland, Iceland, Scotland and Sweden, with the winners of each group
playing off for the title. The second, third and fourth-placed teams in each
group will face one another for the minor placings. Meanwhile, the FA have
announced that Italy, Portugal and Turkey will visit England for an U17
tournament in the final week of August.
Hall will be eager to be involved again when John Peacock's youngsters take
on Italy at Burton Albion on Wednesday 26 August, Turkey at Northampton Town
on Friday 28 August and Portugal at Notts County on Sunday 30 August.
Elsewhere, Freddie Sears completed a full 90 minutes as Crystal Palace went
down to a 1-0 pre-season defeat by Norwich City at Selhurst Park on Tuesday
evening.
The on-loan striker twice came close to scoring for the Eagles, firing one
effort high and wide before half-time before being denied by Canaries
goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos after the break. Sears is expected to feature
in Palace's final first-team friendly of the summer against League One
newcomers Gillingham at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Behrami on right road
WHUFC.com
Valon Behrami is working hard at Chadwell Heath in a bid to be back in
contention sooner rather than later
28.07.2009

Gianfranco Zola is looking forward to Valon Behrami taking the next step
when the West Ham United squad return from China this weekend. The
Switzerland midfielder has stayed behind at Chadwell Heath to work on his
fitness after making excellent progress during the two-week training camp in
Austria. Behrami has been targeting a mid-August return to full training and
the sight of him pounding the pitches in recent days has given fresh hope
for the new season.

Speaking from Beijing, Zola said: "Valon Behrami is training and he is doing
very well. The only reason we didn't bring him here was because he wouldn't
be allowed to do the same things he has been doing so far. The good news is
he has been working on the pitch, he has been running and kicking the ball
so he is looking very good."

Behrami has been out of action since suffering a cruciate knee ligament
injury in the 1-0 defeat of Manchester City on Sunday 1 March. At that time,
the thought was that he would be sidelined until September at the earliest
but the 23-year-old has impressed all with his recovery rate and
determination to get fit as soon as possible.

Zola optimistic over Neill
Both parties are in talks over new deal

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola has not given up hope of convincing Lucas
Neill to sign a new deal at Upton Park. The Australian's contract at the
club expired last month and the defender has since held talks over a new
contract despite being free to speak to other clubs. Neill has previously
rejected an offer from the club but as talks are on-going, Zola is hopeful
the influential defender can come to an agreement on a new deal in the near
future. "Lucas Neill is talking with the club," said Zola. "We need
obviously to have some negotiations but I am hoping that he is going to join
us as soon as possible. "I know his name has been linked to other clubs.
Last time I spoke to the player he told me that if anything could happen he
would call me first. So far he has not called me so I assume he is not yet
going anywhere. "He was an important player last year and our aim this year
is to work to improve how we did last season and we hope that he will make
his decision." Turkish giants Galatasaray are thought to be keen admirers
and an offer could tempt Neill away from English football with Manchester
City also thought to be monitoring his situation.

Baysse opts for Black Cats
Defender happy with wages on offer at the Stadium of Light

Sedan defender Paul Baysse claims he is close to joining Sunderland after
rejecting offers from West Ham and Blackburn. Baysse has been heavily linked
with a move to the Black Cats throughout the summer and is understood to
have met manager Steve Bruce last week. He has also attracted interest from
Sunderland's Premier League rivals West Ham and Blackburn, but has opted for
a move to the Stadium of Light. The 21-year-old has suggested he is tempted
by the chance to link up with Bruce's squad after the Black Cats offered
more than other clubs. "The wages on offer at Sunderland are 20 per cent
bigger than the ones offered by West Ham and Blackburn," Baysse told
L'Equipe. "And I am attracted by it."

Beattie hails Ashton ability
Striker talks up West Ham forward's credentials
Last updated: 28th July 2009

Stoke City striker James Beattie would love to have a player of Dean
Ashton's ability alongside him at the Britannia Stadium. Tony Pulis is on
the lookout for a striker after Dave Kitson failed to live up to his price
tag, and the Potters boss sees West Ham forward Ashton as the perfect
partner for Beattie. Beattie, a £3.5million January signing from Sheffield
United, was a revelation upon his arrival at the club and he would love the
chance to pair up with Ashton. "He's got great natural ability has Dean.
I've spoken to Mathew Etherington and a couple of the lads I know at West
Ham who are very commendable about him," Beattie told Sky Sports News. "As
I say, it's nothing to do with us who comes into this club, you'd have to
ask the gaffer that and the chairman and whoever else's responsibility it is
to bring players in. "We have got to make sure we just get on with the
training that the gaffer puts on for us, get ourselves fit and make sure
we're on it come the 15th August."

A positive sign?
KUMB.com

By: Paul Skelton

The fact that the majority of our players have traditionally gone on to
bigger places to make their name has long been a frustration of most West
Ham fans. Friends of mine have long mocked me for prophesising the arrival
of "the next Gazza" (Joe Cole) or "the new Bobby Moore" (Rio Ferdinand) only
to see these players go on to greatness elsewhere.

The same cycle repeated itself ad nauseum. A prediction of future greatness
from myself, derision from sceptical friends, mild irritation from them as
an England call-up or a spectacular goal seemed to support my crowing and
then ultimately frustrated rage on my part as a bigger team (or certainly a
despised one) removed this hitherto gem and started polishing it, ultimately
to take the credit for 'bringing him on to the next level'.

This didn't start with Rio Ferdinand. John Terry, 'Chelsea's home-grown
talisman' (and young Man U fan incidentally) left West Ham to join Chelsea
at 14. Rio, Frank Lampard Junior Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Jermaine Defoe,
Glen Johnson...the list goes on. It doesn't matter that I had predicted
Frank Lampard's ascension to international renown while the rest of league
were citing nepotism as the only reason why he was in our team; all that
matters is that he isn't ours anymore. So, worse than never having them
darken our doorsteps again, we have to endure small attributions to their
origins buried deep in a sea of praise to their latest employers who are
credited with making them "the player they are today". None among them have
ever stayed at West Ham for long enough to be a "West Ham legend" no matter
how often I proclaim them thus-and in some cases they can't stop scoring
against us.

However, something significant happened last week. A promising 17-year-old
striker moved across London in order to further his career. Usually this
would mean one of Tony Carr's justifiably lauded Academy products moving to
Chelsea (or even worse Tottenham) but Frank Nouble left Chelsea to join West
Ham. He then scored on his first outing in the claret and blue. Admittedly
he didn't leave to go to a bigger club, but he did join somewhere where he
believed he would be given fair opportunity to gun for a first team place.
He had every reason to believe that he will be given more opportunity at
West Ham. Last year Jack Collison, James Tomkins and Junior Stanislas made
40 appearances between them, and our management team gave the clear
indication that only lack of form or injury would remove them from the first
team.

How could this situation have come about?

"The Project" will be something with which most Hammers fans will be
familiar by now. One part of it involves the recruitment of young, quality
players to work alongside our own heralded conveyor belt and The Project is
the way forward according to Messrs Zola, Clarke, Nani and Duxbury. The only
players that West Ham are henceforth spending more than a couple of million
on will have to be better, younger or both compared to what we already have.

It will take a while for everybody to get on board with this notion,
especially if it leads to the selling of assets such as Dean Ashton. The
fact that Dean Ashton has not travelled with the squad to China has provoked
much debate amongst the faithful. Most are beginning to face up to the fact
that it is pointless in persisting with a player who has spent more time
running on the bottom of rehabilitation swimming pools than he has on the
Boleyn Ground's hallowed turf. Ashton's talent is unquestionable but bad
luck has meant that he has mainly played a watching role since his
much-trumpeted arrival from Carrow Road. Talk of accepting £5M for him seems
unlikely-even with his dismal injury record we should be looking to recoup
at least what we paid for him.

Most will be concerned that this will leave us with Carlton Cole as our only
recognised first choice striker. Savio is too young and not yet up to speed
with the Premier League to be considered first choice; Freddie Sears fits
into the same category and is [rightfully] on loan at Crystal Palace; Luis
Jimenez is more of a winger than a centre forward and West Ham did the right
thing in telling both Tristan and Di Michele that their performances were
not enough to earn them a place in our squad.

Frank Nouble will not be filling this likely void for a while, and it's not
clear who will. I, for the first time in a while, am confident however that
this management team knows what they are doing. Bring on the new season.

Gianfranco Zola confident Lucas Neill will stay at West Ham
Times Online

Gianfranco Zola, the West Ham United manager, remains hopeful that Lucas
Neill, his captain, will stay at the club. Zola and his squad arrived in
Beijing on Monday ahead of this week's Barclays Asia Trophy, without several
key players including Neill. The Australian defender is a free agent
following the expiry of his current deal, and his absence has fuelled
further speculation about his future, with Manchester City said to be
interested in signing him. "Lucas Neill is still talking to the club.
There's obviously been some negotiations between the club and the player,
but I am hoping he is going to join us as soon as possible," Zola said. "His
name has been linked to other clubs. But the last time I spoke with the
player he said he'd phone me if anything happens. "He hasn't called me, so I
assume that he's not going anywhere. But as I have said before, he was an
important player for us last year and I hope he begins with us in the new
season."
Neill, 31, joined West Ham from Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 after
turning down the opportunity to play for Liverpool, a decision that prompted
accusations that he had put financial gain ahead of the chance of
silverware. West Ham are also without defender Dean Ashton and midfielder
Valon Behrami for the four-game tournament which sees them take on Tottenham
Hotspur on Wednesday while Hull City face Beijing Guoan, the Chinese Super
League club. "Valon Behrami is training and is doing very well," Zola added.
"The only reason why we have not brought him to Beijing for the FA Asia
Trophy is because he would only do here what he is doing back at home. "He's
been working out on the beach, running and he's looking very well. Dean
Ashton is not here for the same reason. He is working on his own with his
physio and he's progressing. I am waiting for him to return to work with
me."

West Ham hopeful of retaining Neill
By Gary Rose, PA
The Independent
Tuesday, 28 July 2009

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola remains hopeful of convincing defender Lucas
Neill to sign a new deal with the club. The Australia international's
contract at Upton Park expired at the end of last month and he did not fly
to Beijing with the Hammers for this week's Barclays Asia Trophy, fuelling
speculation that his future lies elsewhere.
He had previously rejected a fresh offer from West Ham when they are
believed to have offered the 31-year-old reduced terms to remain at the
club. Mark Hughes, who previously worked with Neill at Blackburn, has been
linked with a bid to take the player to Manchester City, while reports also
claim Galatasaray are keen to reunite him with Socceroos team-mate Harry
Kewell. But Zola sees Neill as a key player for West Ham as they look to
improve on their ninth-placed finish last season and insists talks remain
ongoing. "Lucas Neill is talking with the club," said the Italian. "We need
obviously to have some negotiations but I am hoping that he is going to join
us as soon as possible. "I know his name has been linked to other clubs.
Last time I spoke to the player he told me that if anything could happen he
would call me first. So far he has not called me so I assume he is not yet
going anywhere. "He was an important player last year and our aim this year
is to work to improve how we did last season and we hope that he will make
his decision."
Meanwhile, Zola is adamant the club's participation in the Barclays Asia
Trophy this week will prove beneficial to the players for the coming season.
The Hammers recently completed a two-week training camp in Austria before
heading to China where they will play Premier League rivals Tottenham at
Beijing's Workers Stadium tomorrow.
Zola has brought a strong squad to the Chinese capital and the 43-year-old
believes that participating in competitive games this summer will stand his
side in good stead come the start of the season. "It is important for us to
play competitive games," he said. "My team will give 100 per cent as if we
want to be in good shape for the season we need to be playing competitive
games."

COLE: BEST YET TO COME
By Gary Rose, Press Association Sport, Beijing
Sporting Life

West Ham striker Carlton Cole believes he produced the best form of his
career last season and has warned the rest of the Premier League there is
even more to come this year. The former Chelsea player scored a career-high
12 goals last term to help the Hammers finish ninth and was rewarded with a
full England debut. Cole put that form down to the tutelage of Gianfranco
Zola and Steve Clarke and the 25-year-old is now eager to repay their faith
with an even better goals return this term. "It was a good season for the
whole team and it is a good foundation to work with," he said. "We need to
build on that as the work is not finished so we just need to carry on with
our good progress. "Personally I think I had one of the best seasons of my
career to date. "I got important goals last year which propelled me into the
manager's thoughts and I am going to build on that this year. "For the last
three years it has been about improving each season and that is what I am
working on. "I have the backing of Steve Clarke and Gianfranco Zola and
obviously it has caught the eye of (England manager) Fabio Capello and
hopefully I can push my way into his thoughts as well. "Last season we were
unlucky to miss out on Europe due to injury but if we can keep everyone fit
and on their toes then I think we have a great chance."
Following a two-week training camp in Austria, West Ham are now in China to
compete in the Barclays Asia Trophy. The Hammers will tackle London rivals
Tottenham on Wednesday at Beijing Workers' Stadium with the winner of that
game facing either Hull or local side Beijing Guoan in Friday's final. Cole
is looking forward to locking horns with Harry Redknapp's Spurs. "The London
derby is always a special thing between Tottenham and West Ham. The rivalry
is always going to be there," he said. "They did the double over us last
year which obviously we are not happy about so it is a good time to start
beating them. "It will be a competitive game and we have brought some fans
here so the atmosphere will be good. "We will play fairly and positively to
give the Chinese fans a good spectacle."

Daily WHUFC News - 28th July 2009

Warm welcome for Zola
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola has been speaking with schoolchildren at a Barclays Asia
Trophy launch event
28.07.2009

Gianfranco Zola has already proved a big hit in Beijing after a
question-and-answer session with a group of local students. The manager took
time out to sit with the youngsters as they quizzed him on a range of
football matters and his thoughts on China to kick-start the Barclays Asia
Trophy. The event came before the first official press conference of the
trip later on Tuesday, when Zola will look ahead to the meeting with
Tottenham Hotspur at the Workers Stadium on Wednesday. Hull City will play
Beijing Guoan later that day, with the two winners progressing to Friday's
final after a play-off for third place for the losers.

The whole West Ham squad held a successful first training session in the
Chinese capital on Monday evening, with each of the 23 players taking a full
part. After a lengthy fitness programme with Antonio Pintus, the players
were divided up to work with the ball in different groups with Zola, Steve
Clarke and Kevin Keen.

As more and more locals gathered after spotting the proceedings while on
their way home from work, the coaching staff emphasised the need for energy,
enthusiasm and concentration. Despite the long journey from London, there
was plenty of that on show and, with the floodlights now on fully, the
practice match that finished the training was as competitive as you would
expect given this stage of pre-season.

Throughout the medical staff ensured the players took on plenty of liquids,
given the humidity, and the warm-down saw plenty of attention given to
aching muscles. There was a final burst of finishing practice for the
forwards with Robert Green, who had until then been working intensely with
Marek Stech and Peter Kurucz under Ludek Miklosko's watchful eye, before the
players walked off ready for a deserved rest.

Hall to face Danes

Robert Hall will be eager to feature as England open their challenge at the
Nordic Tournament
28.07.2009

Robert Hall will hope to continue his summer to remember when England's
Under-17 side get their Nordic Tournament campaign under way on Tuesday.
Hall, still just 15 and a year shy of his GCSE exams, is expected to lead
the attack for Kenny Swain's team when they take on Denmark at the Moan
Stadium in Trondheim, Norway.

The teenager has enjoyed a fine few months, making his debut for the Hammers
reserve side before being invited to train with Gianfranco Zola's first team
and appearing in the first-team pre-season friendly at Grays Athletic
earlier this month. At international level, Hall helped England's U16s to
win the Montaigu Tournament in France in April, and will hope to continue
his development in Scandinavia. England open their Group A campaign at
6.30pm UK time on Tuesday with a fixture against the Danes before facing the
Faroe Islands at the Tydal Stadium on Wednesday and host nation Norway at
the Overlands Minde Stadium on Friday. Finland, Iceland, Scotland and Sweden
will make up Group B, with the top two sides playing off for the title on 2
August. The second, third and fourth-placed teams in their respective groups
will also meet for the minor placings.

Coach Swain believes the Three Lions can replicate their Montaigu form in
Trondheim and lift another trophy. "Having played in the Montaigu Tournament
they now understand the demands of tournament football," he said. "They
faced similar challenges there and they coped very well, so I'm confident
they'll do the same in the Nordics. "This is a very similar format, where
we'll have so many games in a small space of time, so the experience they
gained at the Montaigu's will certainly be beneficial."
"Denmark in the first game is a big challenge. Denmark, Sweden and Norway
will all pose their own threat and the Scandinavian teams are always quite
strong. And looking at the other group, we obviously should not discount
Scotland, who we faced in the Victory Shield last year. "It should be a
difficult test, but one I'm looking forward to and I'm confident the players
will gain a lot from it as well."

Following the Nordic Tournament, the U17s will turn their attention to their
UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign, which begins in Azerbaijan
in October.

Hammersmith and City line and the District line will be shut between Barking
and Whitechapel for Tottenham Hotspur's visit to the Boleyn Ground Sunday 23
August and the home game with Liverpool on Saturday 19 September. This means
that Plaistow, Upton Park and East Ham tube stations will have no
underground service running to them. For further information and journey
planning, please visit the Transport for London website by clicking here.
whufc.com will also have further travel information in the run-up to both
matches.

Sick Hartson 'getting stronger'
BBC.co.uk

Former footballer John Hartson is getting stronger and has made an
"excellent recovery" from a second operation on his brain, doctors say. It
is hoped the 34-year-old, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month,
will be able to begin chemotherapy treatment soon. The pre-planned
operation to drain fluid was performed on the ex-Arsenal, Celtic and Wales
star at the weekend. His family said said he was receiving excellent care at
hospital in Swansea. Hartson, a father-of-three, has testicular cancer and
doctors also found the disease had spread to his brain and lungs. He had
emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain soon after his diagnosis
and resumed radiotherapy treatment soon after. Since then he has remained
critically ill in intensive care at Swansea's Morriston Hospital.
Dr Peter Matthews, critical care consultant at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABM)
University NHS Trust, said it was hoped Hartson's physical condition would
continue to improve with the multidisciplinary care he is receiving. In a
statement he said: "John Hartson remains under the care of our critical care
team and neurosurgeons at Morriston Hospital. "Following previous emergency
surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, a pre-planned neurosurgical
drainage procedure was performed at the weekend from which he has made an
excellent recovery. "We hope that he will be in a position to advance his
cancer treatment (chemotherapy) as soon as possible."
A statement released by Hartson's family said: "John is getting excellent
care from all the staff at the hospital and all the family are here to give
John as much support as we can. "We're delighted he's been able to make some
progress but realise that he still has a long way to go. "The support we are
receiving from friends and people around the world is a fantastic lift to us
all."

Gudjohnsen in, Faubert out?
KUMB.com
Filed: Saturday, 25th July 2009
By: Thomas Rooney

I am fully aware that this is a topic which has been much discussed over
recent weeks/months/years. However, the fact that Eidur Gudjohnsen has been
speaking out about his future is definitely worth a mention. The Barcelona
striker has been linked with West Ham all summer, after all.

What has he had to say then? Well, it is clear that the lack of first-team
action at the Nou Camp has increased Gudjohnsen's desire to play more
regularly. With this in mind, he admits that his future is 'a little bit
uncertain' at the moment as he considers his options.

He went on to say that whether he will move or not, depends 'on a number of
sporting reasons'. In other words, he wants to be playing for the right
team, in the right league for the right manager. To be honest, I think it's
a safe football bet that West Ham would be perfect for him in this sense.

Gudjohnsen would (I think), get regular first-team football, he would be
playing in a league that he has had success in before and he would be
working for Gianfranco Zola who he used to play with at Chelsea. All in all,
it seems like a perfect fit.

It certainly seems like something Gudjohnsen is considering anyway. Speaking
about where he could end up playing, he said that it would be 'natural' to
return to England as he had 'eight years' over here before his move to
Spanish football.

Anyway, it is another case of wait and see. If a deal is to be done though,
it would be good if could be done soon. The talking has to stop and the
wheels need to be set in motion. The sooner Gudjohnsen becomes a West Ham
player, the better he can settle into the squad ahead of the new season.

Like I said though, let's wait and see.

Elsewhere, winger Julien Faubert looks set to leave Upton Park. The man who
spent some of last season on loan at Real Madrid is likely to be snapped up
by German club Schalke 04. Zola is very happy to let him leave and let's be
honest; I don't think many Hammers' fans will kick up a fuss.

As far as other transfer news goes, well it is only rumours at this stage
other than the story about Frank Nouble. The best of which include Lucas
Neill joining Galatasaray, Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia being keen on
a move to West Ham and Nigel Quashie looking for a loan deal.

Now there's a thing!

Fulham join the chase for £5m Dean Ashton
Evening Standard
27.07.09

Fulham, Stoke and Hull are all interested in West Ham's out-of-favour
striker Dean Ashton. The Hammers are keen to off-load the £5m-rated forward,
who has been plagued by injuries since moving to Upton Park in 2006, and are
hopeful a deal can be concluded swiftly to give manager Gianfranco Zola time
to sign a replacement.
Ashton did not travel to China yesterday for the Barclays Asia Cup, which
starts on Wednesday when the Hammers tackle Tottenham. The club claimed the
25-year-old has stayed behind to work on his fitness, but remaining in
England will also enable Ashton to talk to interested parties. The only
other player not to have travelled to Beijing is Valon Behrami. The Swiss
international midfielder still needs more time to recover from the serious
knee injury he sustained at Manchester City in March.

HR denies interest in 'triffic' Upson
TeamTalk

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has denied speculation linking him to West Ham
centre-back Matthew Upson - but admits he is a 'terrific player' . Redknapp
has major worries at the heart of his defence as Ledley King, Jonathan
Woodgate and Michael Dawson are sidelined, leaving no recognised centre-back
at his disposal. But the Spurs boss - whose side's defensive frailties were
exposed in Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Celtic in the Wembley Cup - insists he is
not looking to sign England defender Upson from former club West Ham.
Redknapp told Sky Sports News: "I've never mentioned Matthew Upson - listen,
don't believe all the rubbish you read in the Sunday newspapers, where they
get these stories from God only knows. "I've never, ever mentioned Matthew
Upson - he's a terrific player - never mentioned the boy's name, he belongs
to West Ham and please God for West Ham he stays there."
As regards the possible switch of Peter Crouch from Portsmouth to Spurs,
Redknapp said the deal was not yet done. "He doesn't belong to us until we
agree a fee for him with Portsmouth. Portsmouth want to sell him, we have to
agree a fee that is a fee that is acceptable to Portsmouth - if we don't do
that we can't get him so we will have to wait and see you know."
Spurs have been linked with both Crouch and Patrick Vieira and asked how
much money Redknapp had to spend, he replied: "It's not massive money - I
think we've got to do some business in the transfer market, one or two will
have to go out as well to balance the books before you can do anything."
Redknapp was also not too despondent after watching his side lose to Celtic.
"Last pre-season Tottenham beat Roma 5-0 on the Saturday before the season
started and then went eight games without winning a game," he said. I had a
team a few years ago that lost six pre-season games and then won the
Championship so it's what you do, you take lessons, you learn from what you
get out of these pre-season games but it all counts on the opening day, that
is all that really matters - that is where it starts."
When Crouch's signing is finalised Darren Bent will all but certainly leave
the club as Redknapp added: "Darren is looking to go but it's up to people
to make the offer that we want. "Nobody misses chances deliberately. He
tucked some great chances away in pre-season and he will always score goals.
He's a good player but I just want some balance and Crouchy would give us
something different."

West Ham United's Jack Collison Can't Wait To Tackle Tottenham Hotspur In
China
The Hammers midfielder is looking forward to tackling Spurs...
27 Jul 2009 10:39:35
Goal.com

West Ham United midfielder Jack Collison is excited by the prospect of
playing Tottenham Hotspur in China later this week. The 20 year-old told the
club's official website, "Every time you play Spurs it is always going to
have that added incentive as you always want to get one over them. That is
not just for yourself but it is massive for the fans as well so we going to
look to really enjoy that game. We definitely want to do well and win the
competition."
Spurs are currently recovering from a 2-0 defeat to Celtic in the Wembley
cup and will have little time to prepare for Wednesday's match in Beijing.
West Ham, meanwhile, have been preparing for their trip to Asia with a two
week training camp in Austria. "All of the boys are really looking forward
to this week in China," he said. "Things are slowly starting to come
together for the new season. The past two weeks have been all about trying
to get our fitness up and trying to get a bit more match fitness. We will
really look to enjoy it in China. "[Austria] was hard work but it's been
enjoyable. Instead of having us running all of the time, the manager has had
us doing a lot of work with the ball. It is just as hard but enjoyable. It
has been hard work but we are fully fit and in a really good frame of mind."

Manchester City Intensify Pursuit Of West Ham's Matthew Upson
The money-laden Eastlands side are weighing up a potential bid for West Ham
stopper, after John Terry's public pledge of allegiance to Chelsea...
27 Jul 2009 11:53:46
Goal.com

Manchester City could be readying a bid for West Ham United's centre-back
Matthew Upson, following John Terry's decision to remain loyal to Chelsea -
the only club he has represented throughout his professional playing career.
According to a report in The Times, which follows suit to a similar
speculative piece published in The Mirror, City will not take Terry's snub
to heart, and will continue their quest to significantly bolster their
backline. Upson is now regarded as England's first reserve, and has often
been called into action by Three Lions boss Fabio Capello when either
captain John Terry or team-mate Rio Ferdinand are unavailable. The
30-year-old allegedly attracted admiring glances from Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger during the winter window, as the Gunners sought a defensive partner
for former skipper William Gallas. Ivorian international Kolo Toure has
fallen down the pecking order at N5 and is still on City's shortlist of
transfer prospects. A £10-15 million offer is apparently on the cards.

West Ham's £5m-rated striker Dean Ashton in Fulham, Stoke and Hull's sights

Fulham, Stoke and Hull are reportedly interested in West Ham striker Dean
Ashton. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola is willing to do a deal for the
£5million-rated England international if there is enough time to bring in a
replacement, according to the London Evening Standard. The 25-year-old has
not travelled to China to take part in the Barclays Asia Cup with West Ham.
He is staying behind for extra fitness work after an injury-plagued spell at
Upton Park. Valon Behrami also misses the flight as the versatile
Switzerland international needs more time to recover from the knee injury he
sustained at Manchester City in March.

GIANFRANCO ZOLA has lost his battle to keep Lucas Neill at West Ham.
Captain Neill skipped the club's Far East tour and is free to join any club
he wants after contract talks broke down. Hammers boss Zola pleaded with
Neill to extend his stay but without success and now Turkish club
Galatasaray are in pole position to sign him. Zola insists the Aussie
full-back is a massive influence in the dressing room and he went to great
lengths trying to persuade him to stay. Neill, 31, was not in the 23-man
squad to arrive here in Beijing yesterday. Striker Dean Ashton and Valon
Behrami also stayed home. That put into question whether Ashton - who is
still fighting a knee injury - is in Zola's plans. Behrami will play next
month after a knee injury. West Ham face Spurs tomorrow in the Barclays Asia
Trophy.

HULL SWITCH TO ASHTON

INJURY-plagued West Ham striker Dean Ashton is being tracked by Hull after
they failed to persuade Bobby Zamora to leave Fulham for the KC stadium.
Stoke and Fulham are also maintaining an interest in England front man
Ashton, who West Ham may yet decide to allow to move on. Ashton was missing
from the squad that left for China to compete in the Barclays Asia Cup and
will be concentrating on building up his fitness back at the club's Chadwell
Heath training ground. But it could also allow him to be available if Hull,
Stoke or Fulham decide to step up their interest. Ashton is desperate to
shake off the misery of two seasons of injury problems, but West Ham may now
listen to offers for him because they have been delighted with the progress
of Carlton Cole.

Bound for Beijing
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola and his squad have headed to the Chinese capital for the
Barclays Asia Trophy
26.07.2009

West Ham United have departed in good spirits for the Barclays Asia Trophy
in China with the travelling party on a high after a successful pre-season
training camp.

The club is sending a 23-man squad to Beijing, although the players will
wear numbers 1-24 because there is no No6 after it was retired in honour of
Bobby Moore. The players met up at the Boleyn Ground after a couple of days
with their families following their return from Austria. Although he made
good progress during the last two weeks, Valon Behrami will stay behind to
work on his individual fitness programme along with Dean Ashton and Terry
Dixon.

Luis Jimenez - known as Jimmy to his new team-mates - will be on the plane
as will Jonathan Spector, James Tomkins and Mark Noble who are a week or so
behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness after returning later.
Scott Parker is another who has only just returned to match action in recent
days. Jordan Spence and Bondz N'Gala are the only two travelling without
first-team experience for the club.

West Ham will train for the first time in Monday, and again on Tuesday
before the match against Tottenham Hotspur at the Beijing Workers Stadium on
Wednesday (kick-off: 11am London time). The winners of that fixture will
play the victors of the meeting of Hull City and Beijng Guoan on Friday. In
between, there will be a community day with the club playing a key role in
the Premier League initiatives with local youngsters.

Luis Boa Morte summed up the positive mood in the camp before the
high-profile trip. He said: "I am looking forward to China, it will be a
good experience. I have never been before. It is something new and a
different country. I like Chinese food a lot so it should be good!

"It will be good to meet a Premier League team like Tottenham this early.
You like to play against strong opponents to improve as a player. Tottenham
will be a derby and we know them well but this time it will be a few miles
away from the UK. It will still be a game that will be pretty hard though.
They won't want to get beat and we won't want to get beat."

The squad will wear the 2009/10 home shirt for the first time with the strip
available in the club shops and the online Megastore from Thursday. Fans
travelling should take note of the following advice available from the
Premier League. For a travel guide, click here and for information about the

Hilton proud of schoolboys
WHUFC.com
Paul Hilton believes the club's U16s will taken plenty of positives from the
weekend friendly at Spurs
27.07.2009

Paul Hilton believes his young players will have learned a lot during the
3-2 pre-season friendly defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. Assistant Academy
Director Hilton took a very young team to Spurs Lodge for what was
effectively an Under-17 fixture on Saturday. A number of U16 schoolboys were
also involved, with goalkeeper Jake Larkins, midfielders Blair Turgot and
Dominic Vose and winger Mathias Fanimo all impressing on Saturday alongside
George Moncur and Eoin Wearen - fresh from a goal for the reserves at
Thurrock on Friday night.

Spanish defender Sergio Sanchez, 16, captained the side, while up front
first-year scholars Daniel Purdy and Daniel Subuola impressed with their
ability and persistence.Purdy and Turgot were both on target for the
Hammers, who were slightly unfortunate to take nothing from an entertaining
game. With so many youngsters involved, and many of Hilton's squad involved
in a pre-season game at Tiptree United on Wednesday, the two clubs agreed to
allow rolling substitutions on a hot morning in Chigwell.

As such, Hilton replaced Callum Driver, Jack Lampe, Vose and Subuola after
just 21 minutes, with Jordan Brown, Paco Craig, Jack Werndly and Wearen
coming in to the action. In all, the Hammers made ten changes over the
course of the 90 minutes. The substitutions had an undoubted effect on the
fluency of the team's passing.

"I think it was a great test for the lads," said Hilton. "I said to them
before that I intended to make lots of changes anyway because the game came
on top of the game on Wednesday. So, some of them had a 20-minute blast
physically and then came off and had a rest, got some fluid inside them and
did a bit of stretching while I put somebody else on.

"Sometimes you can get bitty performances by making so many changes but,
having said that, I thought Tottenham passed the ball better than us,
especially in the second half.

"I thought we did really well in the first 20 minutes. We got the goal and
could have got a couple more. After that we didn't really find the
consistency we were looking for. We gave the ball away a little bit too
much, especially early in the second half, which was a bit disappointing.

"Fair play to Tottenham, because they passed the ball well and worked very
hard. They gave us a good test. Even though we got back in the game at 3-2
and had a couple of chances to rescue the game result-wise, I think a lot of
the lads came out of the game with credit."

Hilton believes his young players will have taken a great deal from
Saturday's match and has urged them to use that experience when the FA
Premier Academy League season kicks of at the end of August.

"This game was an illustration to the younger ones of how quick and physical
the game can be at Under-18 level," he said. "It was a good workout for them
so, from that point of view, we were quite pleased with how the game went."

"In the second half we had a midfield with three schoolboys in there. Those
boys are learning the game and it was a great experience for them coming
into this environment at this level of football. From that point of view, it
is great and we have to take that into consideration when you look at the
overall result.

"We feel they're capable of playing at that level or else we wouldn't be
playing them. They've got lots to think about and lots to work on and this
was another step up for them."

China trip excites Collison
WHUFC.com
With the squad safely arrived in Beijing, thoughts for Jack Collison have
turned to the task in hand
27.07.2009

Jack Collison is eager for West Ham United's pre-season to move to another
level with the arrival in China for the Barclays Asia Trophy. The
20-year-old midfielder was part of a 23-man strong squad that touched down
in a humid Beijing on Monday morning. The Hammers were given a good
reception at the airport with a number of photographers and camera crews
there to record the occasion. Arriving before Tottenham Hotspur - their
opponents on Wednesday - and Hull City, West Ham were soon on their way to
the city centre hotel that would be their base for the next week.

After a light meal and a few hours rest to recover from the flight, the
squad were scheduled to have an evening training session before a more
rigorous work-out on Tuesday. Collison said he could not wait to get
started, having already noticed the benefit of the previous two weeks at an
Austrian training camp.

"All of the boys are really looking forward to this week in China. Things
are slowly starting to come together for the new season. The past two weeks
[in Austria] has been all about trying to get our fitness up and trying to
get a bit more match fitness. We will really look to enjoy it in China.

"[Austria] was hard work but it's been enjoyable. Instead of having us
running all of the time, the manager has had us doing a lot of work with the
ball. It is just as hard but enjoyable. It has been hard work but we are
fully fit and in a really good frame of mind."

The midweek derby date with Tottenham at the Beijing Workers Stadium - live
on Sky Sports in the UK - was firmly in sight. "Every time you play Spurs it
is always going to have that added incentive as you always want to get one
over them. That is not just for yourself but it is massive for the fans as
well so we going to look to really enjoy that game. We definitely want to do
well and win the competition."

Collison is not worried about the weather, which as warm as the welcome when
they arrived but has the potential for a downpour or two. "If it's raining I
don't think it would be a bad thing. Pre-season is all about your match
sharpness and getting to know the new players. Jimmy [Luis Jimenez] has come
in and already looks like part of the team.

"Spending 12 days together, every day and every night, is great for team
spirit and we're going to look to have a real good trip to China and then
start the season well."

Gudjohnsen not set on England
Barca striker unsure what the future will hold
By Chris Burton Last updated: 26th July 2009
SSN

Eidur Gudjohnsen has revealed that there is no guarantee he will be heading
to England this summer. The Iceland international is widely expected to be
offloaded by Barcelona during the transfer window, with the European
champions already well stocked in the attacking department. The former
Bolton and Chelsea frontman has been strongly linked with a return to the
Premier League, with West Ham reported to be keen to strike a deal.
Gudjohnsen, though, insists he is yet to decide what his future may hold,
and claims he has not set his heart on a second spell in the English top
flight. "Everybody just seems to think if I don't continue at Barcelona then
I'll be coming back to England," he said. "But England's not the only
country that plays football. There are so many options. "Quite honestly, I
don't know where my future lies."
Gudjohnsen did feature for a young Barcelona side against Tottenham on
Friday in their opening game of the Wembley Cup, but he accepts
opportunities with the Catalan giants may be limited this season. As a
result, the 30-year-old knows he may be forced to move on in order to find
the regular football he craves. "I said it a couple of days ago that my
future is at Barcelona, unless anything changes," he added. "There's not
much I can say, because I don't know myself. "I need to play, simple as
that. I'm a footballer and I love the game of football. I want to play as
much as I can. "But I enjoyed myself against Spurs and I thought I played
some good stuff. "I'm just concentrating on getting myself fit. If I get too
involved in speculation then there's a risk I'll lose focus on keeping fit
for a new season."

Scott Parker Looking Forward To West Ham's Trip To China
The Hammers midfielder is back in action after last season's injury and he
is concentrating on the future...
26 Jul 2009 19:19:02

West Ham United fly to China to participate in the Asia Trophy this week and
will face London rivals Tottenham Hotspur amongst other teams and Scott
Parker, now back in action after a groin injury curtailed his campaign last
season, is looking forward to the trip. Parker played 45 minutes of a
friendly in Slovenia last week, and is relishing the chance to be back and
building his fitness ahead of a new campaign, which promises much for the
Hammers. "Pre-season has been quite difficult for me, as I still had the
problem I had last year and only got over it two weeks before I came back,"
the 28-year-old told the Irons' official website. "I've been working hard
through the summer and realistically this was the best time for me to play.
"As a professional athlete, I'm not sure you're ever 100 per cent fit but
that's the way it is. I feel fine and as good as I can be, I just hope to
get fit now and push on. "China should be good and we've got some good
games out there. It will be difficult with the heat and the time difference
but we look forward to it and hopefully we can put in some good displays. We
want to do well out there."
As for his first action in a Hammers shirt since March in last Thurday's
friendly against ND Mura 05, a 0-0 draw, Parker found it tough going but was
pleased to be able to look forward to getting back to full fitness again. "I
found it OK. I've not played for the best part of four months so it was
quite difficult but I got through it and that was the main thing," he added.
"I look forwards and upwards now really."

Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen has rejected the idea that he is
definitely heading back to the Premier League this summer. The 30-year-old
Iceland international has previously played in England with Bolton Wanderers
and Chelsea and has been linked with a return after finding first-team
opportunities limited at the Camp Nou. However, Gudjohnson told reporters:
"Everybody just seems to think if I don't continue at Barcelona, then I'll
be coming back to England. "But England's not the only country that plays
football, there are so many options. Quite honestly, I don't know where my
future lies. "I said it a couple of days ago that my future is at Barcelona,
unless anything changes. There's not much I can say, because I don't know
myself. "I need to play, simple as that. I'm a footballer and I love the
game of football. I want to play as much as I can. "I'm just concentrating
on getting myself fit. If I get too involved in speculation then there's a
risk I'll lose focus on keeping fit for a new season."

West Ham's Parker still hampered by injury

West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker admits he's struggling with injury.
"Pre-season has been quite difficult for me as I still had the problem I had
last year and only got over it two weeks before I came back," the
28-year-old England midfielder told whufc.com. "I've been working hard
through the summer and realistically this was the best time for me to play.
"As a professional athlete I'm not sure you're ever 100 per cent fit but
that's the way it is. I feel fine and as good as I can be I just hope to get
fit now and push on."

Trio Chase West Ham United Striker Dean Ashton - Report
A newspaper report claims the injury-prone Hammer may have his pick of
clubs, should he choose to leave Upton Park...
26 Jul 2009 11:33:44

No less than three Premier League clubs are being linked with a move for
West Ham United striker Dean Ashton, according to the Sunday Express. The
newspaper claims that long-term suitors Stoke City have been joined by Hull
City and Fulham in the chase for the injury-prone forward, who looks set to
leave the Hammers this summer.
Ashton signed a new five-year contract at Upton Park in 2008 but has
suffered terribly with injuries since and managed only four Premier League
starts last season. Recent reports have also claimed that he has been left
out of the club's pre-season preparations, as an exit looms. Whilst he may
be surplus to requirements in East London, the Sunday Express claims that
the three clubs are set to bid up to £5 million to capture the 25-year-old.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis has previously admitted he has enquired about the
striker's availability, whilst Fulham are also known to be interested in
strengthening their squad, after qualifying for next season's Europa
League.Hull may also come into contention and, having already missed out on
several transfer targets including Frazier Campbell and Bobby Zamora, they
will be keen not to let another player slip through their fingers.

Bayer Leverkusen in for West Ham's Faubert

Stoke set to close deal for West Ham striker Ashton
27.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

Stoke City are closing in on a £5 million deal for West Ham United striker
Dean Ashton. The Daily Star Sunday says Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola has
decided to sell his injury-prone hitman, 25, after not getting the chance to
see him in first-team action last season. A succession of niggling injuries
halted Ashton's long-term recovery from major knee surgery a year earlier.
But Stoke, who have been chasing the former Crewe forward all summer, are
willing to give him the platform to revive his career.
Negotiations over the fee – which includes a sell-on clause – have been
completed and Ashton is due at the Britannia Stadium in the next 48 hours to
have a medical and discuss personal terms. As long as that proves trouble
free, Ashton will then be unveiled alongside Pulis' first close-season
signing – £3m Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead.

Daily WHUFC News - 25th July 2009

Parker feeling good
WHUFC.com
The 2008/09 Hammer of the Year is on target to hit the ground running with
the new season
24.07.2009

Scott Parker is happy to be back in action for West Ham United again and
sees next week's trip to China as a chance to 'look forwards and upwards'.
The Hammer of the Year made his long-awaited return from a groin injury in
the 0-0 draw with ND Mura 05 on Thursday night - his first run-out since the
1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers on 21 March. After coming through with no
problems, he is looking to get more minutes under his belt with the
high-profile fixture against Tottenham Hotspur in the Barclays Asia Trophy
on Wednesday.

"I found it OK," Parker told whufc.com after his 45-minute appearance in
Slovenia that saw him take the captain's armband from Robert Green, who like
Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole was playing his second game of the summer.
"I've not played for the best part of four months so it was quite difficult
but I got through it and that was the main thing. I look forwards and
upwards now really."

Parker has had a different pre-season to most of his colleagues because of
his efforts to overcome that groin problem. A club physiotherapist joined
him for part of his family holiday to ensure he was in the best shape
possible once the first-team squad reported back in early July. It meant he
sat out the first few friendlies as he focused on a personal programme.

"Pre-season has been quite difficult for me as I still had the problem I had
last year and only got over it two weeks before I came back," the
28-year-old England midfielder added. "I've been working hard through the
summer and realistically this was the best time for me to play.

"As a professional athlete I'm not sure you're ever 100 per cent fit but
that's the way it is. I feel fine and as good as I can be I just hope to get
fit now and push on."

The next step will be the trip to the Chinese capital, with the Hammers
playing Spurs on Wednesday before a fixture on Friday against either Hull
City or local side Beijing Guoan. Parker said: "China should be good and
we've got some good games out there. It will be difficult with the heat and
the time difference but we look forward to it and hopefully we can put in
some good displays. We want to do well out there."

Nouble eyes Thurrock bow
WHUFC.com
West Ham United fans could get a first glimpse of Frank Nouble with the
friendly at Thurrock on Friday
24.07.2009

Frank Nouble is relishing the prospect of a possible first run-out for his
new club when a West Ham United XI take on Thurrock on Friday night. The
17-year-old striker could feature for Alex Dyer's side at the Ship Lane home
of the Blue Square South team along with a number of those who played in a
1-1 draw at Cambridge United last Saturday. The most experienced performers
on view for the 7.45pm friendly are set to be defender Calum Davenport and
midfielder Nigel Quashie.

Also in the frame could be Matthew Fry, Holmar Eyjolfsson, Conor Okus and
Cristian Montano - the latter scoring the winner in a first-team friendly at
Grays a fortnight ago. Tickets are priced at £8 for adults, £5 for OAPS and
concessions and £2 for children. Click here for more information.

Nouble will have no trouble settling in, having come to know many of his
team-mates in recent years. "I know some of the young players here from
outside of football but also from playing against them at a young age," he
said. "The likes of Conor and Matty are definitely going to help me feel at
home. It is going to be about hard work and they are going to push me."

He is certainly ready and raring to go after finalising his switch from
Chelsea in midweek. He said: "I have been training for the last two weeks so
my fitness is up there. I have just got to keep it going and do well
whenever I play. I know if I show the fans that if I work hard, I can win
them over. You won't see anything less than 100 per cent from me, that's for
sure .Hopefully my ability will come through."

The England youth international's first glance this week at the newly-grown
Boleyn Ground surface has whetted his appetite."Being here for the first
time gives me a buzz," he said. "The pitch looks fantastic and it looks a
stadium that you want to make your home. I want to be running out there,
scoring goals and doing well for this club. I am excited."

Nouble, who has Ivory Coast ancestry through his father, admitted he
harbours international ambitions with England but knows all that matters
first is proving himself in claret and blue. "I have played for England at
Under-17 level.. Hopefully I can come back into that but my main focus is to
work for West Ham.

"I am looking forward to staying here and doing well for this club and
nothing else at the moment. My mind-set is always that. I am just eager to
get going."

Thurrock 2-3 West Ham United
WHUFC.com
All the action from Friday night's friendly involving a West Ham United XI
at Thurrock FC
24.07.2009

Thurrock v West Ham United XI
Ship Lane, Grays
Kick-off: 8pm

Final score- 2-3

90min - It was barely the last action of the game. A thrilling end to a good
work-out for Alex Dyer's side.

89min - GOAL! - Nouble scores....It was a superb strike but was all about
Montano's trickery on the left flank. He danced past two defenders, cut
inside and curled the pass of the game into Nouble's path. The No10 had
evaded his marker and showed tremendous composure to fire into the corner.
Terrific play all round.

88min - Bezzichieri has a go from fully 25 yards. Woolley is equal to it. At
the other end, Mehmet's fingertips just about deny Knight a second and
probable winning goal.

86min - GOAL! - Knight strikes a left-footed shot past Mehmet, although it
needed the help of the post to beat the keeper.

84min - Arguably the best move of the match finishes with Nouble's goalbound
shot deflected behind by Swaine. Bezzichieri had started it before the play
switched via Wearen to Fry. The full-back rounded his marker before slipping
the ball back for the No10 to go for goal.

83min - Wearen is fouled. Quashie takes a moment to organise the troops
before getting us back under way. Davenport is then on hand to avert the
danger with a Thurrock attack. Fry is down. The lively No3 feels the force
of a late challenge.

82min - More good handling from Mehmet after Lima's snap-shot. Can the
Hammers hold on?

79min - GOAL! - Eoin Wearen rises highest to head in from Abdulla's
perfectly placed corner. The yellow-booted Irish youth international has not
looked out of place despite being only 16.

78min - Nearly an own goal. Montano chips forward for Nouble whose presence
forces the error from the home defender. Nouble then gets on the end of the
Abdulla corner but the ball loops away.

76min - Knight races away and is clear off the Hammers defence. Mehmet comes
off his line, stands up well and then gets down to save superbly.

75min - A shout for a penalty there. Nouble did well before chipping into
the area for Montano. The visiting fans claimed handball but the referee
adjudged it was a clean challenge.

74min - Paul Lima has a go for Thurrock. It is a good effort but he never
troubled Mehmet in truth.

73min - Chance for Thurrock. Fry did well to head away a cross into the
six-yard box but the ball came back to the home side. However, they could
not keep it on target.

72min - We have switched to a more conventional 4-4-2 with Abdulla and
Nouble in attack. The latter is doing well despite a physical introduction
to life at West Ham.

71min - Flynn has a go from long range but his effort is low and wide.

70min - Holmar Eyjolfsson does well to clear the danger after Mehmet was
unable to collect.

67min - Another double change for Thurrock. Anderson and Paine are off to be
replaced by No17 and No18. Will endeavour to bring you their names as soon
as possible.

65min - The floodlights are in full flow here as darkness descends on the
stadium. There are a few clouds but the rain has stayed away since that
pre-game downpour.

63min - A double substitution for Thurrock. Bryant and Orilonishe are going
off, to be replaced by 14 David Knight and No12.

61min - Good tracking back by Montano averts the danger of a low cross that
fizzed across the area. Thurrock are on top at the moment.

59min - It is a good game. Lalite gets a shot away but it is deflected wide
for a corner.

58min - Nouble releases Wearen who in turn finds Abdulla. His shot is
blocked. Corner to West Ham, which is played to Quashie on the edge of the
box. He shoots low but Woolley saves.

57min - Great reflex save from Mehmet. Corner to Thurrock but it should have
been 2-1 to the hosts. Davenport then clears the danger.

55min - Fantastic pass from Montano. Nouble is on to it but the ball will
not sit up right for him and the Thurrock defenders get it away. After a
quick counter, Montano is at the other end sorting out the danger.

54min - Well played Fry. Matt Bodkin was surging up the wing until a
well-timed tackle stopped him in his tracks.

52min - Quashie has been a big influence for his young team-mates tonight.
The captain has been talking constantly and shown a good attitude.

51min - Apologies. Deniz Mehmet is also on for Loveday in goal. The Turkish
U17 international gets his first touch of the ball.

50min - Swaine is waved back on as Davenport tries to play in Nouble. The
offside flag halts the No10's progress.

49min - We have had a stoppage here with treatment for Swaine. The No4 has
been in the wars, having broken his nose in a game on Monday night.

47min - First chance of the half for Thurrock. Leon Lalite fires over.

46min - We have a couple of changes. Zola is off to be replaced by Simone
Bezzichieri while Eoin Wearen - the Irish youth international midfielder -
is on for Brookes. Nick Barrett has gone to right-back.

HALF-TIME

45min - The referee allows no time for stoppages as he blows for half-time.

44min - Nice run by Fry but he is crowded out.

43min - We are back under way again. Thurrock have a go for goal through
Flynn. Loveday saves well.

42min - We have a hold up in play while Anderson gets treatment. Dyer is
using the time to have a word with his players.

40min - Another foul on Barrett. The midfielder has been in the wars
tonight. Huke seems OK. He is sat on the bench and no doubt reflecting on a
good goal.

39min - Abdulla is straight into action. He races away before teeing up
Nouble. The No10 makes room and then has a go for goal. The shot is blocked
though.

38min - An early change. Huke is going off to be replaced by Ahmed Abdulla.
It looks like Huke has a head injury.

37min - Quashie shoots high and wide but the referee had already blown for a
foul.

36min - In case you are interested, Dyer has changed his front three around.
Nouble has gone to the left, Huke is through the middle and Montano to the
right.

36min - Anderson has a go from distance. Loveday was never worried.

35min - At the other end, Fry recovers well to clear the Thurrock danger.

34min - Zola sets Nouble away down the left. The No10 is lightening quick
and covers 60 yards in no time. He then gets to the byline and pulls the
ball back expertly for Barrett. The No7 connected first time but Woolley was
able to clear.

33min - Highlights of today's game will appear on WHUTV over the weekend, by
the way.

32min - West Ham have done well after the set-back of going a goal down. The
new-look forward line is finding good space and looking hungry.

29min - GOAL! - Seb Huke shows good composure to slot the ball under Woolley
from about 15 yards. It was a nice finish and came after Montano's run and
shot was parried by Woolley into the No9's path.

29min - Huke is clattered by Rob Swaine. The older Thurrock players are
using all their experience.

27min - Electric pace by Nouble sees him fly down the left. He leaves three
defenders in his wake, dances into the penalty area before bringing the ball
on to his left. He shoots but it is low and wide.

26min - A bit of a mix-up between Fry and Montano leads to a Thurrock
corner. Loveday is again fouled and West Ham clear their lines.

24min - Free-kick to Thurrock in a dangerous central position. Flynn is over
it. He fires in a rasping left-foot drive that Loveday tips over the bar.
Great effort.

23min - Great play by Nouble. He glided past two defenders and strode into
the area. With everyone expecting a shot, he slid in Montano who was poised
to go for goal when a Thurrock defender stuck his leg out for a corner. Fry
got on the end of the Barrett flag-kick but it came to nothing.

22min - Loveday is still receiving treatment. He took a whack in the face
but should be OK to continue.

21min - Loveday is flattened after a deep ball into the box. Free-kick to
West Ham.

20min - Nearly a second for Thurrock. Another cross from the left just
evades David Bryant who was at full-stretch.

19min - Huke tries to breakaway from a swift counter but his adjudged to
have strayed offside.

18min - GOAL! - Phil Anderson converts from close-range after Lee Flynn had
caused all sorts of problems. It came from a burst down the left and low
cross. Loveday could not do anything about it.

16min - Barrett is upended in midfield. A free-kick forward for the Hammers
finishes with Fry earning a corner. Barrett comes across to take it - but
the ball is overhit and runs out for a goal-kick.

15min - Decent delivery from Barrett but the ball is cleared. It eventually
falls to Nouble who tricks his way past Phil Anderson before his shot is
blocked by Paine. A quick counter sees Orilonishe burst through on goal.
Only a last-ditch tackle from Zola prevents a clear shooting opportunity.
The referee deemed that a foul. From the free-kick, the West Ham wall does
its job.

14min - Huke forces the first corner of the game.

13min - Fola Orilonishe does even better for Thurrock at the other end.
Finding space 20 yards from goal, he unleashed a right-foot drive that had
Loveday scrambling across. It just fizzed wide of the post.

12min - Well done Nouble. He picked the ball up inside his own half and ran
at the left-back. As he approached the area, he slid the ball out to Brookes
who then made space before crossing. The ball fell to Nouble again and he
worked an opening before firing wide to the keeper's right. Bright play.

11min - Quashie tries to set Huke free on the left but the pass is overhit.
Unlucky though as the German U20 team-mate of Savio had made a good run.

10min - Nouble did well there. The No10 chased down a loose back-pass and
gave Woolley a scare. The keeper just about got the ball away though.

9min - Davenport lofts one forward for Huke but it runs through to Joe
Woolley in the Thurrock goal.

8min - Nice control on the chest from Huke there. He then laid it off nicely
for Montano but the ball just ran out of play.

7min - The game is a little scrappy at the moment. West Ham are building
from the back through Brookes and Fry whenever they can.

6min - Wayward pass from Matt Paine for the hosts just as they looked like
building their first attack.

5min - Nouble is dropping deep to help the midfield. He has two defenders on
him when he receives the ball at the moment.

4min - Neat interchange between Quashie, Zola and Huke there. West Ham have
started by zipping the ball around well.

3min - Cristian Montano looks to have a free role around Huke and Nouble.
Zola is to the left of the midfield three with Barrett to the right. Quashie
is in a holding role between them.

2min - A rampaging run by Matty Fry from left-back only finishes with a
Thurrock defender forcing a goal-kick.

1min - Sebastian Huke and Frank Nouble get us under way. The pair exchange a
handshake before the off. Barely 18 seconds later Calum Davenport is
flattened by a late challenge from David Bryant. That was a fierce one from
the Thurrock No9.

KICK-OFF

8pm - Think we are going to be even later. Nigel Quashie is only just
leading out the team now. The midfielder has the captain's armband having
worn it in the 1-1 draw at Cambridge United a week ago.

7.55pm - There is a healthy crowd here now. Just to remind, the kick-off has
been delayed until 8pm because of traffic problems in the area.

7.53pm - West Ham will be wearing the 2009/10 away strip this evening. The
players are back in the dressing room, receiving a team talk from Alex Dyer
while the Thurrock team continue on their warm-up drills.

7.51pm - This is the last pre-season fixture before the first team fly to
China for the Barclays Asia Trophy. A total of 24 players from those who
featured in the Austrian training camp over the past two weeks are set to
travel to Beijing. whufc.com will have full coverage of the China trip,
including Wednesday's opening match against Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile,
the Under-18s have a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow.

7.50pm - We've just had Purple Rain by Prince played by the PA. Quite
fitting considering the clouds amassed to the right of the ground and the
earlier shower. So far though the sun is holding its own and we have a
perfect setting for an evening's football.

7.33pm - As well as the absent Okus, Danny Kearns is still working his way
back to fitness after a muscle injury. He is back in training though.

7.32pm - Because of the traffic problems, we are going to get under way at
8pm. Kick-off is delayed by 15 minutes.

7.30pm - Bright sunshine now over this part of south Essex. with the stadium
in the shadow of the QEII Bridge and close to the Lakeside shopping centre.
The crowd is building as well with many having had to cope with the Friday
night traffic on the M25 and A13. Goalkeeping coach Jerome John is putting
Loveday through his paces with the rest of the Hammers contingent making
their way on to the pitch for the warm-up.

7.22pm - We have just been handed the Thurrock team-sheet. It reads: Joe
Woolley, Lee Flynn, Phil Anderson, Rob Swaine, Kenny Clark, Matt Paine, Matt
Bodkin, Leon Lalite, David Bryant, Paul Lima and Fola Orilonishe.

7.20pm - We may see a 4-3-3 formation from the visitors with Cristian
Montano, Nouble and Huke in the attack with Zola, Quashie and Nick Barrett
in midfield. Iceland Under-21 defender Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson will partner
Calum Davenport in central defence with Brookes and Matt Fry at full-back.
Peter Loveday will start in goal although we may well see Deniz Mehmet in
the second half.

7.16pm - Here comes the rain. Talk about extreme weather - the rain is
coming down hard and fast. It is going to make for a zippy playing surface.

7.10pm - The players have just come out for a look at the pitch, which looks
in great condition from here. Frank Nouble is deep in conversation with new
team-mates Ahmed Abdulla and Tony Brookes. The striker towers over both of
them and will be hoping to put in a good performance on his West Ham debut.

7pm - Welcome to the Ship Lane home of Thurrock FC for the latest friendly
encounter for Alex Dyer's reserves. The second string have been boosted
again by the presence of Calum Davenport and captain Nigel Quashie. Up front
there is a debut for new recruit Frank Nouble alongside German triallist
Sebastian Huke. The starting XI also features Andrea Zola - the manager's
son - who has been training at the club. Conor Okus is missing with a slight
hip problem while Robert Hall is away on England Under-17 duty.

Nouble prize on debut
WHUFC.com
A first goal on his first start for West Ham United capped a memorable
night's work for Frank Nouble
24.07.2009

Frank Nouble made it a debut to remember with a last-minute winner as a West
Ham United XI won by the odd goal in five at Thurrock on Friday night.

The 17-year-old striker only signed in midweek but was quickly in the groove
in his first outing in West Ham colours. He kept his cool to score from
Cristian Montano's killer pass after the hosts had seemingly earned a draw
through David Knight. It was Nouble's first game of pre-season, having only
had a double training session with his new club the day before the fixture,
but he still managed the full 90 minutes.

Irish youth international Eoin Wearen, still only 16, had headed the Hammers
in front with eleven minutes to play after Phil Anderson had scored the
first goal of the game and triallist Sebastian Huke had equalised on the
half-hour mark. It was an entertaining contest at the Ship Lane home of the
non-league club who were often on top and looked perhaps the more likely in
the closing stages.

Huke, a German youth international colleague of Savio's, began in a
three-man attack also featuring the excellent Cristian Montano and Nouble.
All eyes were on the latter though because of his switch this week from
Chelsea and he did not disappoint with some good bursts of pace and neat
touches in the opening stages. The youthful Hammers team were also reliant
on the experience of Calum Davenport and Nigel Quashie, who was captain for
the night.

Reserve-team manager Alex Dyer also gave a run-out to Andrea Zola, the son
of the manager, with the midfielder getting the first 45 minutes before
making way for triallist Simone Bezzicherri. Huke only lasted 38 minutes as
a stray elbow meant an early substitution and chance for 17-year-old Ahmed
Abdulla who was to prove pivotal to the Hammers attack in the second half.

Dyer is set to take a Hammers XI to Kingstonian next Friday night, with all
those on view perhaps hoping to stake a claim for a spot in the glamour
pre-season friendly against SSC Napoli on Saturday 8 August. The first-team
squad are heading to China this coming week for the Barclays Asia Trophy -
starting with a derby date against Tottenham Hotspur at the Beijing Workers
Stadium on Wednesday 29 July.

Sears strikes again
WHUFC.com
Freddie Sears was on target again for Crystal Palace in a 3-0 win over
Bristol Rovers this weekend
25.07.2009

Freddie Sears scored a superb solo goal for Crystal Palace as they ran out
3-0 winners against Bristol Rovers. After two half-chances in the opening 19
minutes, Sears struck soon after. The 19-year-old expertly controlled a long
ball from Clint Hill, before cleverly flicking the ball over his marker's
head and finishing low and hard with his left foot. More good work from
Sears in the second period almost set up his strike partner Danny Coyle,
whose shot just clipped the top of the crossbar. The Academy product then
came close to grabbing his second when he made some space for himself before
flashing a shot across the face of the Rovers' goal. Two late goals from
Neil Danns and Alessane N'Diaye completed the scoring for the Eagles in
Friday night's fixture. Sears, who also scored twice during Palace's tour of
the United States earlier this month, will be looking to hit the net again
when the Eagles take on League One new-boys Norwich City at Selhurst Park on
Tuesday evening.

Narrow loss for U18s

West Ham United went down to a 3-2 friendly defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on
Saturday
25.07.2009

West Ham United Under-18s fell to a narrow pre-season defeat by the odd goal
in five at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

A fast-paced, entertaining encounter saw Assistant Academy Director Paul
Hilton give a number of first-year scholars and schoolboys an extended
outing, with the two clubs agreeing to allow rolling substitutions at Spurs
Lodge.

Goalkeeper Jake Larkins, midfielder Blair Turgot and forward Daniel Purdy
all impressed for HIlton's youthful-looking side.

The Hammers, without many of the second-year scholars who were involved in
the reserve team friendly at Thurrock on Friday evening, took an early lead
through Purdy, only for Spurs to hit back with three goals of their own
either side of half-time.

Turgot's penalty reduced the arrears just after the hour-mark, but Hilton's
team - cheered on by watching second-years Cristian Montano, Nick Barrett
and Ahmed Abdulla - were unable to muster an equaliser in the closing
stages.

West Ham started the better of the two sides and it was no surprise when
Republic of Ireland youth international Purdy latched on to Turgot's pass
before slotting the ball into the bottom left-hand corner after just four
minutes.

Ten minutes later and Purdy came within a lick of paint of doubling the
visitors' lead, only to see his acrobatic volley thud back off the crossbar.

Having survived that let-off, Tottenham hit back strongly and levelled
matters on 23 minutes. Further goals followed on 49 and 60 minutes - the
second a penalty - as the home side took control of proceedings.

West Ham could easily have equalised in between Spurs' second and third
goals, only for Mathias Fanimo to see his rasping 25-yarder fumbled on to
the crossbar by the home goalkeeper. Turgot headed in the rebound, only to
be denied by the assistant referee's flag for offside.

However, the midfielder did not have to wait much longer to get his name on
the scoresheet, confidently slotting home his spot-kick after Daniel Subuola
had been bundled over inside the penalty area.

Both sides continued to press for more goals and Purdy twice shot straight
at the goalkeeper when well-placed. At the other end, West Ham stopper
Larkins produced a superb reaction save to deny the Tottenham left-back in
the dying seconds.

West Ham United U18: Larkins, Smith, Sanchez, Lampe, Driver, Turgot, Moncur,
Fanimo, Vose, Purdy, Subuola
Used subs: Brown, Wearen, Werndly, Craig
Unused subs: Mehmet, McNaughton

West Ham United's Julien Faubert Interests Bayer Leverkusen
The French winger could be set for a move to the Bundesliga...
25 Jul 2009 14:17:32

West Ham United midfielder Julien Faubert has attracted the attention of
German side Bayer Leverkusen, according to The Daily Star. Fellow Bundesliga
side Schalke reportedly stated their interest in the Frenchman recently, and
the winger now seems to be in high demand. The former Bordeaux midfielder
has said that he does not know where his future lies, but he has also
insisted that he would be happy to remain at Upton Park. The 25-year-old
spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Madrid, a move which
baffled the footballing world, but he has now returned to the Hammers, and
has taken part in the club's pre-season preparation. The France
international has been at Upton for the past two years, but suffered a
serious injury blow before the 2007/2008 Premier League season and so his
appearances have been limited. Leverkusen are looking to strengthen their
squad for the new Bundesliga season, and have targeted the Frenchman who
would cost in the region of £5 million.
Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola has recently said that the player is still
being assessed by the club and added that they will make a decision on his
future in the next few weeks. But it is thought that if a bid for him came
in, then Zola would be happy to sell.

Gianfranco Zola's Son Makes Debut For West Ham United XI
Zola Jnr. lined up against Thurrock in a 3-2 victory last night...
25 Jul 2009 09:17:32

The son of West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola made his first appearance
for a club XI last night, during a 3-2 victory over Thurrock. Andrea Zola,
an 18-year-old midfielder who operates on the left hand side, played the
first 45 minutes for a team largely consisting of youth team players, before
being replaced by Simone Bezzicherri.
But Zola Jnr's performance was overshadowed by a debut goal for new signing
Frank Nouble, a 17-year-old striker. Nouble only arrived at West Ham in
mid-week after opting to leave Chelsea, choosing the Hammers over fellow
London club Arsenal. He brought a successful end to an extremely busy week
as he scored the decisive goal in the last minute of the game. Zola has
recently spoke of his delight in signing Nouble, telling the club's official
website, "We are delighted to have Frank here. "Everyone has spoken about
how he is a talented boy. He is young, enthusiastic and the type of player
we like. "So we will welcome him, try to improve him further and hopefully
he will help make us better too."

Dean Ashton's West Ham future in doubt as Gianfranco Zola drops him from
trip
West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola has left Dean Ashton out of a
pre-season trip to Austria, adding to the belief that the forward is likely
to leave Upton Park this summer, with Stoke City the favourites to sign him.

Though Ashton is injured and would have taken no part in matches on the
club's pre-season tour of Austria, Zola did include other injured players in
the travelling party.
Aside from his ankle injury, West Ham staff are believed to have been
unhappy with the England striker's general levels of fitness upon returning
to the club after the summer break, according to a report in the Mirror.
Ashton is also facing the possibility of missing out on the club's trip to
China where they will play in a tournament including Tottenham, Hull City
and Beijing. Bedevilled by persistent and serious injury during his time
with the club, Ashton has only made 46 appearances in four seasons and, at
£70,000-a-week, Zola is prepared to sell a player rated at around £5
million. Ashton only signed a new five-year deal last year but has yet to
play since the arrival of Zola and has not even featured in training for 10
months. Stoke manager Tony Pulis has previously expressed an interest in
Ashton and the latest developments are likely to prompt fresh inquiries.
Zola is currently exploring the possibility of signing Barcelona forward
Eidur Gudjohnsen, whom he played with at Chelsea, to augment a callow
striking group that has only Carlton Cole and Luis Jimenez as experienced,
front line strikers.

West Ham boss Zola frustrated with Ashton fitness
25.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

Dean Ashton's future at West Ham United is in serious doubt. Hammers chiefs
were unhappy with the England striker's fitness when he reported back for
training and left him out of their 10-day trip to Austria - despite taking
other injured players. The Mirror says Ashton will also be frozen out of the
club's forthcoming trip to China, where they will play Spurs and Hull or
Beijing. Senior figures at Upton Park are frustrated at Ashton's inability
to even train and it is understood manager Gianfranco Zola is planning for
the new season without the £7million man. Stoke are keen on Ashton, 25, and
could now renew their attempts to sign him.

West Ham United have entered negotiations for Barcelona striker Eidur
Gudjohnsen. The Times says West Ham held talks with Gudjohnsen yesterday but
Barcelona are unwilling to pay a chunk of the forward's wages of £90,000 a
week. Gudjohnsen is keen on a return to England and a reunion at West Ham
with his former Chelsea teammate Gianfranco Zola.
