Bellamy feeling good
WHUFC.com
The visit of Arsenal and the chance to start at home again has left Craig
Bellamy full of optimism
25.10.2008

Craig Bellamy has spoken about the impact made by Gianfranco Zola and his
ambitions for West Ham United - starting with Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The striker, who has made four appearances off the bench this campaign, is
set for his first start at the Boleyn Ground since 21 October 2007 - a 3-1
home win against Sunderland - and will take plenty into the game from the
new manager. "He's got a lot and works with you very closely which is very
good," Bellamy said when asked about the Zola effect.

"He's very humble as well. He's not 'look, you should be able to do this or
you should be able to do that'. He says 'try and do this' and the way he
puts it across is very good. He gives you just little bits. He doesn't try
getting into you. It's just that little bit he knows can bring you on.

"He works with you every day like players did with him when he was a player
because he was obviously with some of the best like [Diego] Maradona and
everyone. At Napoli and at Parma he worked with some outstanding players. So
he's trying to do that by coming here. His enthusiasm is such that after
every training session he is doing something with us - shooting, skills and
free-kicks he's very big on."

Bellamy went on to describe his manager as "different class" and
acknowledged how hard it can be for any coach coming in to a new club. He
added: "It's difficult for him because we were a team that did all the
pre-season under a different manager and then, suddenly, a couple of weeks
into the season, he's come in and had to put his ideas across which he
hasn't been shy in doing. The players have responded well."

The Wales captain also has admiration for Zola's opposite number on Sunday,
Arsene Wenger, for the way he has shaped Arsenal over the past decade.
"They're an outstanding team and a really outstanding football club. The way
they're run and everything about them is just special. They've got one of
the greatest managers in the world there who has changed the Premier League
and had a massive influence on football in this country."

While Bellamy looks up to the likes of Wenger, his own approach to the game
and response to a question of whether he sees himself as a role model is
that he simply aims to be the best he can be in training and then take that
on into matches. "I just try to look after myself and try and set my own
standards so if I play well on a Saturday, people say 'look what he does in
the week. No wonder he plays well'.

"I can be the greatest professional in the world but if I don't play well
it'll go over people's heads. That's why I've got to get the balance.
There's looking after myself and then I've got to put in a performance at
the end of the week and people will realise there is no coincidence."

He has been working particularly hard of late to get back to his best and is
relishing the chance to take on Arsenal. "It's a good game to have as my
first start for a year at Upton Park. I feel really good. I'm not naive
enough to think I'm going to be straight back in. I need more games ?
training has really stepped up again and hopefully with Arsenal and then Man
United [on Wednesday], touch wood, I just want to keep playing now.

The final word should perhaps go to his manager, with Zola impressed by what
he has seen at Chadwell Heath and in the rarefied air of the Barlcays
Premier League when it comes to his dynamic No10. "He is very important," he
said. "He is one of the players that can give us that extra bit. He is sharp
and in the last 20 minutes he is always dangerous ... we have a lot of hopes
for him because he can take us to a higher level."

The goal for Cole
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola is predictiing big things for Carlton Cole if he continues
his fine form
25.10.2008

Carlton Cole's recent performances have certainly caught the eye and his
delighted manager is tipping him to continue to go from strength to
strength.

Having scored against Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and Bolton Wanderers, the
in-form No12 was unlucky to see a shot come off the bar against Hull City
last weekend that would have made it three goals in three games. Zola thinks
the promising start means England manager Fabio Capello could soon be taking
notice.

"Carlton Cole is playing well. He needs to improve his finishing and he
knows that," he said. "I have a lot of faith in him - it's something that he
can improve and he will improve through training sessions and through
scoring goals and getting confidence, but it is down to him. If he can add
that last part which is the most important part, he can really become an
international player."

Emile Heskey has performed the main central role for England admirably of
late, but the back-up position to him seems to be open to contenders
particularly following Dean Ashton's injury. "He [Cole] has got a chance;
he's really got a chance in that position. He needs to step up a little bit
in his finishing and score more goals than he does because he really helps
the team a lot."

"Helping the others - that is brilliant, but a striker needs to score more
goals and I'm sure he will. He is very committed and I will help him a lot."

Captain's Blog - Up for the derby
WHUFC.com
The visit of Arsenal this weekend has raised the expectation levels, says
Lucas Neill
25.10.2008

This week has seen a real deliberate reaction from the whole of the squad to
the disappointment of the result up at Hull.

Everyone is very conscious that the intensity of training which has been
good, needed to be maintained and built on and as a result, there has been a
real urgency and focus this week.

We all want to react positively to a game which for 90 per cent of the time,
we dominated and were comfortable. It started much like the game up at Derby
last season where we broke through and ended up winning convincingly. Had we
done that last weekend, I believe we would have had a similar result. The
result stands though, but there were plenty of positives to take from it.

I would like to welcome Arsenal, their manager, players, staff and
supporters for the game on Sunday. We go into a match, that I feel couldn't
happen at a better time. The crowd will be up, everyone raises their game
against one of the big four clubs and it is a game where we will look to set
about Arsenal, upset them, play the ball and I am sure it is going to be a
very exciting game.

At home, we are extremely confident that we will get a positive result and
put the disappointment of the last two defeats behind us.

Fulham have already showed that Arsenal, away from home, can be vulnerable
and I have no doubt that the way we are playing at home, added with a bit
more aggression, we can get a similar result. This is a game that all this
week in training, we firmly believe we can get a good result and upset the
form guides and prove the so-called experts wrong.

A lot has happened since my last column - there was the international break
for the World Cup qualifiers that brought a lot of positives for several of
our players. For myself, with Australia we enjoyed a 4-0 win over Qatar.
Matty Upson played in the two England games, which they won both and Matty
by all accounts gave a good representation of himself, his club and country
in those two matches.

Bellars and Ginge [Craig Bellamy and James Collins] had mixed fortunes in
terms of results with Wales but can consider themselves unlucky not to have
got something from the match against Germany. Valon [Behrami] won two
difficult games with Switzerland, Herita [Ilunga] was with DR Congo and
Nobes and Jack [Mark Noble and Jack Collison] were up against each other as
England Under-21's met Wales Under-21's, with England enjoying the spoils
there.

West Ham United as a club stepped up their work in the local community this
week as part of the Premier League's Creating Chances initiative. Matty
Upson paid a visit to the Braintree Rethink Carers Support group which helps
and supports people who suffer or who have suffered with a mental illness.
Our manager Gianfranco Zola went along to take part in a Community scheme
that is run by our club, which helps to teach youngsters how to become
sports coaches. These are just two visits among many in the community which
as a club we will be involved in this season.

This week has seen the Kick It Out, One Game, One Community initiative
launched for this season, Carlton Cole is our team's ambassador. The game
against Arsenal is our day of action to put our weight behind erasing racism
in all forms from our game.

Football is recognised as a universal game played by every colour, creed and
race, therefore there is no room on the pitch or on the terraces for racism.
I urge our fans to support this as much as they can and recognise that good
work is being done off the field for this and it is up to us to put that
right on the field.

The camp is very buoyant because we know if we continue to create the
chances we have been creating and play the way we have been playing -
cutting a few errors out here and there - the wins and the goals are going
to come.

I am sure you will agree as fans, coming to watch our games at the moment
has been quite pleasant on the eye and we can only get better with the way
the manager wants us to play and the belief he has given us to pass the ball
around. Don't lose faith because this is still a very exciting season for
us.

This weekend against Arsenal, we will again need you, the fans, as the
proverbial 12th man against a very good footballing team. You can be a
driving force behind us as we look to put the frustration of not getting
anything from the last two games into Sunday's match and rectify that by
getting back on the winning road.

I would quickly like to mention that the Christmas parties for our younger
fans, the Youth Academy members, is fast approaching. So, be sure to book
your place and myself and the players will see you there. Enjoy the game.

Lucas Neill

Positive approach for Sunday
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola is looking to go on the offensive against Arsenal and has
full confidence in his players
25.10.2008

Gianfranco Zola is a big fan of the style of play of Sunday's opponents but
will not change his own attacking approach to stifle Arsene Wenger's
visitors.

He said: "He is one of the managers I admire the most ... he is one of the
managers I look up to. I like the way he manages the team and the way his
team play. In England, Arsenal probably belongs to the top three or four
teams and they are a very young team and can only get better and better and
can achieve a lot.

"We are going to try to attack. If you sit and wait they will find a way to
beat you anyway as they are very good. The danger can come from so many
players. What teams like Arsenal don't like is when someone tries to hit
them back. We will try to play our game and see if they are better than us.
Simple as that."

The Arsenal fixture leads the way on a busy week. After the Gunners' visit,
the team travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday before an even longer trip to
Middlesbrough next Saturday. It is exactly this kind of schedule and the
prospect of testing himself against the best that excites the manager. "It's
going to be a tough game [against Arsenal] but I rely a lot on my players
and I have so much confidence in them in what they are doing and so much
confidence in what they can do, so I will have a very good night's sleep!"

Zola did not register a win against Arsenal in 12 attempts as a player but
hopes he will enjoy slightly better fortune as a manager. "Yes they are
quite a difficult team to beat as a player, maybe it might change now as a
manager - I hope so. They have always been a difficult team to beat and they
will be this time as well but things can be changed."

Despite the tough looking fixture list, Zola believes a victory in one of
those games could have a big impact. "You become better by playing through
these games. You have to be big enough not to have any worries and just get
enjoyment from it."

Zola's forward line has been boosted by the return of Craig Bellamy against
Hull and the form of striker Freddie Sears, one of a number of youngsters to
impress for the reserves against Arsenal reserves in midweek. "My hope is
that we are going to develop them in this club. It's always been good
because it has already some good players," Zola said.

"Freddie Sears has already played and I have good expectations of him. We
also have some other good players coming through and hopefully they will get
better. We are making these training sessions to get them when we have the
opportunity to come in and play with us so they have a feel of that to make
them better. I have a lot of faith in them," he added.

Zola is clear about how he wants to achieve success - through developing
young talent. "That is the reason I came to this club. The project I was
presented by Scott Duxbury and Gianluca Nani was to come to this team, get
talented young players and try to develop them. One day maybe we can compete
with the big teams, at a high level, with the players we have brought up.
That is the plan. That is what I like about this job."

"The plan is this club wants to become competitive and become one of the top
teams in this country. But we want to do this through developing talented
players, maybe through bringing in some young talented players and maybe
developing the players we have over here. That is the plan and that is what
we will do."

Zola says he is relishing the work he is putting in with his squad on the
training pitch as he looks to pass on his knowledge to the next generation.
"Training is the part of the job I enjoy the most. It is the one I have
spent of my career building up that part and it is the part I like. That's
why I say the players can only become better through training sessions and
they are made to improve you. So I am going to be emphasising that all of
the time."

Zola has plenty to consider
WHUFC.com
Gianfranco Zola could have James Collins and Lee Bowyer on Sunday and has
updated on Kieron Dyer
25.10.2008

Gianfranco Zola has been busy preparing his squad for the visit of London
rivals Arsenal on Sunday while there is encouraging signs for Kieron Dyer.

James Collins and Lee Bowyer are back in contention after recovering from
injuries but Mark Noble will miss out after damaging his calf in training
this week. Diego Tristan will also be given more time to prove his fitness.
Zola said: "We have Mark Noble who is going to be out for a few weeks. He
just had a tear problem in his calf and that is the bad news. But we have
Lee Bowyer coming back from injury and James Collins will be available for
the game."

The manager went along to watch the reserves in midweek action, and was
impressed by what he saw in the 1-0 home win against Arsenal's second
string. Hayden Mullins, Luis Boa Morte and Jack Collison all staked their
claim for a starting berth in the midfield. The latter only turned 20 this
month but Zola is confident in the club's emerging talents. "There are some
young players coming through who can become important players," he said.

Of Dyer, who was involved in Friday morning's training session with the rest
of the first-team squad as he gets close to a return after over a year out
with a double leg-break, Zola said: "He is not far away but this is the most
delicate time. He is progressing very well. We are bringing him with us to
do the first part of the job that we do [in training] but he still needs a
little bit of time. He can't really tackle and do things like that. He is
doing OK and we are really pleased. "

Meanwhile, Jonathan Spector is due back at the club this weekend ahead of
resuming training. He had summer surgery on a hip injury and has been
working hard on his recovery in the United States. Also, set to be involved
next week after a medial knee ligament injury he picked up on England
Under-19 duty is James Tomkins. Finally, Dean Ashton has also reported good
early progress on his rehab from an ankle injury, and has been a regular
back at the training ground. He has discarded the crutches and already
started swimming and cycling, although no date has yet been put on his
return in the New Year.

West Ham will be without Mark Noble for a month after the England Under-21

Noble and defender James Collins is also back in contention but Spanish
striker Diego Tristan is ruled out.
Arsenal have both captain William Gallas (thigh) and fellow centre-half Kolo
Toure (shoulder) available. Full-back Bacary Sagna (knee) has an outside
chance of returning but may need another week's recovery.

"What teams like Arsenal don't like is when someone tries to hit them back.
We will try and play our game and see if they are better than us."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: I still feel there is a little hangover from
last year when we didn't win the title. "We want to come back stronger this
year and get everyone behind the team. But I believe we have to get the fans
going. "From last year we get the feeling we can do it and the only way is
to get everybody behind the team. There was nothing more in my speech than
that. "I have the impression that the stadium is too quiet."

Rat deserts (another) sinking ship
KUMB.com
Filed: Sunday, 26th October 2008
By: Staff Writer

Former Hammers manager Harry Redknapp has completed a shock switch to bottom
of the table Tottenham.

Redknapp - an Arsenal fan as a child who was in charge at the Boleyn between
1994 and 2001 - was announced as Tottenham's new manager shortly ahead of
midnight after Juande Ramos and his team were sacked less than 24 hours
ahead of their game with Bolton.

Redknapp was allowed to leave Portsmouth - who are said to be struggling
financially - for a fee of £5million. He will officially take charge of his
new team on Monday, although will be present in the stands tomorrow for the
Wanderers clash.

Reaction from both West Ham and Tottenham supporters to the news has been,
on the whole, negative; one disappointed Spurs fan on Glory Glory said:

"It's like the George Grahram appointment all over again. Where's the
ambition? Where are we going to be in three years [time]? "

United fans, speaking on the KUMB.com forum tonight have been equally
scathing; one said:

"[I] had a lot of respect for Redknapp but i've lost it now. Of all the
teams to go to, he chose them bunch of herberts!"

Redknapp - who only a fortnight ago roundly condemned Tottenham fans
following their treatment of former player Sol Campbell, and who had
previously insisted that his spell at Fratton Park would be his last in
football - told SkySports:

"Tottenham are a big club and it is a chance for me to see what I can do. We
need more aggression and we've been on a horrendous run. We've got to get
cracking and get results.

"We can stay up this year. We've got a good chairman who backs the club.
Hopefully I can go in and get the breaks.

"It came a bit out of the blue and once the compensation was agreed it was
all systems go. I was so happy at Portsmouth that until we got the phone
call I never thought I would leave. But once Tottenham came in and the offer
was made it was difficult for the club to turn down the offer.

"I've moved on and hopefully people will remember what I did there. I wish
Jermaine Defoe was at Tottenham now!"

Although a surprise, the move is not perhaps as unlikely as it would first
appear for Redknapp possesses a well-honed ability to jump ship at the right
time.

After initial success at Bournemouth in the late 1980s, Redknapp resigned
from his position after becoming disillusioned at the lack of transfer funds
available. The Cherries later avoided going bust by the skin of their teeth.

His next stop was at West Ham where he was first appointed as Billy Bonds'
right-hand man. But after stabbing his former pal in the back - something
which led Bonds to furiously declare that he would never speak to Redknapp
again - he was made manger, a position he held for some seven years.

However finances were again at the centre of Redknapp's departure from Upton
Park; after demanding a £10million summer transfer warchest he was fired by
then Chairman Terry Brown. United were relegated two seasons later after the
financial burden of Redknapp's signings eventually took its toll.

After being appointed Director of Football by Portsmouth in 2001 he was made
manager a year later after replacing Graham Rix. With the help of backing
from Milan Mandaric Redknapp took Portsmouth into the Premier League where
he kept them for three years against the odds.

Things again turned sour for Redknapp in 2004 when disagreements over the
appointment of a Director of Football led him to once again resign. But just
weeks later he risked the wrath of Pompey fans by joining their bitter
rivals Southampton.

Unfortunately for Redknapp his magic touch deserted him and he failed to
save the Saints from relegation. After an average return from his
Championship efforts he resigned in protest at the appointment of former
England rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward.

Continuing to surprise, Redknapp returned to Portsmouth weeks later where he
remained until yesterday. His new side currently sit bottom of the Premier
League with just two points from their opening eight fixtures.

Redknapp - whose colourful career included accusations of corruption two
years ago - next returns to the Boleyn Ground on Monday, 8th December when
his new team take on Gianfranco Zola's side in front of the TV cameras.

Gianfranco Zola would terrorise defenders even at 42, says Craig Bellamy
Telegraph.co.uk
Craig Bellamy believes West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola is still good enough to
grace a Premier League side.
By Rory Smith
Last Updated: 8:22PM BST 25 Oct 2008

The well-travelled Welsh striker has been so impressed with the diminutive
Italian's abilities in training that he is confident he could prove a menace
to most defenders even at the ripe old age of 42. But while Zola is not
planning on donning his boots any time soon, Bellamy takes solace in the
fact that such a talented boss cannot help but inspire his players to
improve. Bellamy said: "You can learn just from watching what he does. "He's
working very closely with us and that really helps. Everyone at the club has
been really impressed with him. "I know you'd expect me to say that but I
wouldn't if it wasn't true. "He's very humble, too. To be as good a player
he was and to be able to get your message across is difficult. "We've seen
time and again over the years that great players don't necessarily know how
to manage but the way he puts things across is very good. "He'll spend time
with us after training practising shooting, skills and free kicks, things
like that. He's still good enough to play, if I'm honest. "He played with
Maradona when he was at Napoli and some great players at Parma who just
pointed out little things that would bring him on, and that's what he's
trying to do here."
Bellamy will line up at Upton Park to make his first home start for more
than a year against an Arsenal side in rampant form. The Gunners scored five
to sweep aside Fenerbahce in midweek after a rousing second-half performance
against Everton at the Emirates last week. And Bellamy knows Arsene Wenger's
side are not the sort of team a West Ham side, who have lost twice in a row,
want to face as they seek to arrest their slump. He added: "My experiences
of playing against Arsenal are pretty much the same as the rest of the
Premier League's. "You just never get a kick. There was nobody happier than
me when they knocked Highbury down – I'd watched so many games there because
I could just not get the ball. "But it's a good game for me to be involved
in while I'm trying to get my fitness back, because I'll have to do a lot of
running."

West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola is convinced teenage striker Freddie

Zola said. "Freddie Sears has already played and I have good expectations of
him. We also have some other good players coming through and hopefully they
will get better. We are making these training sessions to get them when we
have the opportunity to come in and play with us so they have a feel of that

West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola is convinced Carlton Cole can play his

West Ham striker Bellamy wants four more years
26.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham striker Craig Bellamy admits he may have four more years left in
the game. The 29 year-old said: "I'll get to 33 and see what my body tells
me but it has taken a battering. I'm the sort of player who invites
challenges and that's why I've had so many injuries. "There have been some
real lows and it really takes it out of you. Not just the injuries, but the
surgeries and the rehabs are really tough times. "The pain every day is
tough to take. "But I'm not worried that I've lost any pace. As soon as I
could do any strenuous running I was working on my speed because it's such a
large part of my game. "I'll be just the same as I was."

West Ham boss Zola not thinking of Serie A return
26.10.08 | tribalfootball.com

West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola has cooled talk of working in Italy's
Serie A. He said: "I think things are going well because the team played
decent football from the start and is constantly adding a little more. In
terms of results, we got off to a very good start. "I never regretted the
decision. I am throwing myself into it and am happy to have accepted this
challenge."
When asked if he would become a Serie A coach, Zola was less enthusiastic.
"I don't know, being a Coach in Italy is very different to doing it in
England. I won't say anything more for fear of contradicting myself. "I do
hope to have fun here and repay West Ham for their faith in me, investing in
me despite my lack of experience."

All the team news and background for Sunday's derby encounter against
Arsenal
24.10.2008

Barclays Premier League
West Ham United v Arsenal
Boleyn Ground
Sunday 26 October
4pm
Referee: Phil Dowd
WHUTV - Full audio commentary

Introduction

* West Ham United welcome Arsenal for the club's second London derby of the
season, having won 2-1 at Fulham on 27 October. A home win would move the
club to within a point of the visitors, who sit in fourth place in the
Barclays Premier League.

* United go into the game with a mixed run of form of late. Having secured
their first away win of the season in that game at Fulham, the side then
lost their 100 per cent home record by losing at home to Bolton Wanderers in
the following match - Gianfranco Zola's first league defeat as manager - and
then went down 1-0 at Hull City last weekend.

* Those results turned the side's form on its head as they had won their
first three matches at the Boleyn Ground.

* After last weekend's games, West Ham United are eighth in the Barclays
Premier League with four wins and three defeats and a level goal difference.
Arsenal have won five games, including two on their travels, drawn one and
lost two.

* Only West Ham United and Middlesbrough have not drawn a game this season.

* Zola's side will be hoping to keep their first clean sheet after a run of
20 matches since their last at Fulham in February. The club have not lost in
any of the four games this season where they have taken the lead.

* Carlton Cole is the club's top scorer with three goals from eight league
appearances.

* If Hayden Mullins is selected it would be his 200th appearance for the
club, while James Collins is a game away from a century of career matches.

* West Ham United are next in action on Wednesday when they have the small
matter of a trip to the champions Manchester United. Arsenal have an equally
important night when they play host to old rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Goals: Adebayor 10, Walcott 11, Diaby 21, Song 49, Ramsey 90

Team news

* New signing Diego Tristan will not feature again as the striker continues
to work on his fitness. The manager has got defender James Collins and
midfielder Lee Bowyer back in contention.

* Mark Noble is definitely missing through a calf muscle tear that could
keep him out for a month, with Luis Boa Morte, Hayden Mullins and Jack
Collison all possible replacements. The trio each performed well for the
reserves in their midweek 1-0 win against Arsenal reserves. Junior Stanislas
scored the goal to underline his progress.

* Jonathan Spector (hip) will be at Sunday's match and is expected to resume
training next week, when he will be joined by fellow defender James Tomkins
after his medial knee ligament injury suffered in the summer. Young striker
Zavon Hines is also due to return to training next week after his knee
problem.

* Dean Ashton remains a long-term absentee with his left ankle injury but
Kieron Dyer has been a welcome sight back at the Chadwell Heath pitches. He
has been taking part in light training but is still three weeks away at
least from stepping up to full training. Danny Gabbidon is progressing well
with his abdominal injury but no date has been set for his return.

* Arsenal are hopeful that William Gallas (hamstring) and Kolo Toure
(shoulder) could be fit to play in Sunday's game but Bacary Sagna (knee)
will miss out. Eduardo (knee) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) are both still
out with long-term injuries.

West Ham United defender Matthew Upson said: "We perhaps should have won
[the last two matches] but didn't so now we need to win a couple that
we're not expected to do well in. We know we have a real job on our hands
this weekend though. In terms of passing and moving, which is what attacking
play is all about, Arsenal are probably the best in the league."

The last meeting of the clubs was Arsenal's 2-0 win on New Year's Day this
year.

Miller sent out on loan

Promising young right-back Ashley Miller has joined Conference South outfit
Bishop's Stortford on loan
24.10.2008

Young defender Ashley Miller has joined Bishop's Stortford on a month's
loan. The 19-year-old full-back could make his debut for the Conference
South team away to Dorchester Town in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round on
Saturday. The winners will enter the first round proper. Miller, who gained
valuable experience on the first-team's pre-season tour of North America,
has played once for the reserves this season and also had three games at
Under-18 level. Youth-team captain Josh Payne is on loan at League One
outfit Cheltenham Town.

He has discarded the crutches and already
started swimming and cycling, although no date has yet been put on his
return in the New Year.

West Ham United's injury woes are set to continue after it was revealed that
Mark Noble is likely to be out for around four weeks. The 21-year-old
midfielder picked up a knock in training earlier in the week and will be out
until mid-November at the earliest - meaning he will miss the games against
Arsenal, Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Everton, at least. News of the
England under 21 international's condition was revealed by Gianfranco Zola
during today's pre-match press conference. "Mark is going to be out for a
few weeks with a torn calf," confirmed the new Hammers boss. "That is the
bad news; it happened in training." Noble's injury leaves the gate open for
Hayden Mullins to return to the fold. Only yesterday the former Crystal
Palace midfielder expressed his concern over a lack of first team
opportunities in recent weeks. However Zola will also be able to call upon
both Jack Collison and Lee Bowyer should he decide to follow an alternative
route.

West Ham v Arsenal preview

Watch the London derby live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1
Last updated: 24th October 2008

PREDICTIONS:
Skysports.com prediction: West Ham 1 Arsenal 3
Sky Bet odds: West Ham 6/1, Draw 12/5, Arsenal 8/13
One to Watch: Theo Walcott

West Ham will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Hull when they
face an Arsenal side fresh from a fantastic night in Turkey, live on Sky
Sports 1 and HD 1 on Sunday. The Hammers made a bright start to life under
new manager Gianfranco Zola with back-to-back victories over Newcastle and
Fulham. However, they then lost at home to Bolton and are now eighth in the
table after becoming the latest scalp for Premier League new boys Hull last
weekend. Zola will consider his strike options after Craig Bellamy and
Carlton Cole drew a blank against the Tigers, with David Di Michele and
Freddie Sears possible alternatives. Recent signing Diego Tristan is
unlikely to make the side as he continues to build up his match fitness.
Dean Ashton (ankle), Kieron Dyer (leg), Jonathan Spector (knee) and Danny
Gabbidon (stomach) all remain sidelined.
Arsenal were in scintillating form as they crushed Fenerbahce 5-2 in the
UEFA Champions League in midweek and will hope to turn in a repeat
performance at Upton Park. The Gunners have been unable to find much
consistency in the Premier League this season and Arsene Wenger has already
admitted that his side cannot afford to lose any more games. Wenger will
regard the coming fortnight as an opportunity to put more pressure on the
league leaders as Arsenal face struggling rivals Tottenham next Wednesday
and then newly-promoted Stoke. The French tactician has been boosted by the
news that Eduardo should be fit by the middle of next month, while Bacary
Sagna is likely to return against Tottenham.
Emmanuel Eboue is set to continue at right-back against West Ham in Sagna's
absence, while the fitness of Kolo Toure (shoulder) and William Gallas
(hamstring) will be assessed closer to kick-off after both players sat out
the game with Fenerbahce. Wenger may be reluctant to rotate his front six
but Robin van Persie may come in alongside Emmanuel Adebayor up front with
one of the midfielders making way. Nicklas Bendtner is also available after
shaking off a slight knock.

Possible starting XIs :

West Ham: Green, Neill, Upson, IIunga, Behrami, Faubert, Parker, Noble,
Etherington, Bellamy, Di Michele.

Arsenal: Almunia, Eboue, Silvestre, Song, Clichy, Walcott, Fabregas, Diaby,
Nasri, Van Persie, Adebayor.

Gianfranco Zola at his best inspiring West Ham's next generation
Remember that Gianfranco Zola goal for Chelsea in an FA Cup tie against
Norwich in 2002?
Telegraph
By Jim White
Last Updated: 10:04PM BST 24 Oct 2008

The one where, as a corner swung in, he ran from the penalty spot to the
near post and deftly back-flicked the ball into the net with his right
instep? It was a goal of such audacity it left many who were there wondering
if they had really seen what they just thought they had seen. "Fantasy," his
manager Claudio Ranieri called it.

Well he was at it again earlier this week. Though this time the setting was
somewhat less salubrious than a packed Stamford Bridge: an astro turf pitch
flanked by the A13 flyover and the now disused artificial ski slope that was
once known as the Beckton Alps. And, as he demonstrated the skill not once
but twice, the match - a cheery kickaround involving a bunch of
nine-year-olds from a primary school in this deprived ward in London's East
End - was not quite as elevated.

Indeed both times he performed his magic trick, although executed perfectly
to project the ball into the path of a young team-mate, it so astonished his
colleague that the ball rolled harmlessly out of play. Nevertheless the grin
that broke across his face (and that of the three people watching from the
touchline) suggested it had not gone unnoticed.

"You like that?" he said after the game, a huge smile still settled across
his features. "I tell you what, I not lost it."

The new West Ham manager was in Beckton to observe a project funded by the
Premier League and the Professional Footballers Association and run by his
club. The scheme - which has been running since March this year - involves
recruiting 12 youngsters from the Newham and Tower Hamlets areas and
teaching them to become sports coaches. Already the happy Hammer dozen are
giving high-quality lessons in football, basketball and athletics to over
1,000 youngsters a week.

By the time they have finished the year-long course, the idea is that they
will then coach the next dozen recruits, thus providing not only sound
employment in an area not exactly over-burdened with opportunity, but also
developing a continually expanding cadre of positive role models to offer
children a visible alternative path to criminal behaviour.

"I tell you what," said Mick King of West Ham's Community Sports Trust. "I
have never been as proud of anything we have ever done as I am of these
coaches. They are the future of our game."

Zola was there to offer the young coaches both encouragement and the benefit
of his wisdom. For him, this was no mere photo opportunity. He spent more
than two hours in Beckton, meeting the coaches, acting as a guinea pig in
their training sessions, making sure he joined in games involving every
single one of the hundred children who turned up.

"I've had so much from this game, when you do things like this you feel you
are giving something back," he said. "It is something I encourage everyone
to do, my players but also managers. Right now I haven't got much time. As
you can imagine, it's quite busy my time. I don't know if a manager is
expected to do this, but when I have the opportunity, it's a good feeling."

Zola was a visible embodiment of his abiding philosophy. He ran round the
pitch chivvying and grinning, ruffling hair and encouraging, a whirlwind of
energy and encouragement.

"The players are a mirror of your mood," he told the coaches before the
session started. "If you come in angry, they will be angry. If your
shoulders are down, their shoulders will be down. Smile, be happy, enjoy.
And they will smile and enjoy too."

It is an attitude, he explained afterwards, he takes into training every
morning with his new charges.

"It is the same with professionals as it is with kids," he said. "My
personal opinion is that the character of the team is very close to the
character of the manager. You have to show them you are enjoying it so that
they can get joy from what they do. That way good football comes."

The word is his attitude has already affected change at his new place of
work. Despite presiding over a club whose finances are melting faster than
the polar ice cap, training has been chivvied up, players are staying all
day, volunteering for extra sessions, relishing working with a man whose
enthusiasm is infectious.

"It was great meeting him and talking with him," said Kieran Joseph, 19, one
of the trainee coaches. "And what he said was right. I remember being at
school and if a teacher come into the classroom angry, then I'd be angry
straight away. You got to be up with these kids all the time. Then they'll
stick with the game."

Which, of course, is part of the purpose of the project.

"Look, I'm not going to pretend this 100 per cent charitable, yes, these
kids are our future," said Scott Duxbury, West Ham's chief executive as he
observed from the touchline as his manager joined in a game with eight
delighted nine-year-olds. "But this is the purest form of marketing. It is
about creating the next generation of football fans, not necessarily West
Ham fans."

And if the youngsters playing with the club's new boss do turn up at the
Boleyn Ground he promises they will appreciate what they find almost as much
as kicking the ball around with him.

"I enjoy very much being manager," Zola said. "Well, I enjoy when we win.
When we lose it's not the same. But I have a lot of confidence in my
players. I'm very pleased to be with this team, to be involved, to help them
get better. And you see on Sunday against Arsenal, it is a huge opportunity
for me and my players. I admire very much Mr Wenger, he is a great manager,
I know we are playing a very good team. But good reputations sometimes come
through winning games like this one. I will gamble and go for a win. I like
to gamble."

And with that, he was off back to training and preparing, jogging to his
car, in a hurry to get on with the job of putting a smile back on West Ham
faces.

Hammers must wait for Tristan
by Chris Stanton, 24 October 2008

Gianfranco Zola claims it will be a few more weeks yet before Diego Tristan
is ready to make his West Ham debut. The 32-year-old has joined The Hammers
on a free transfer following his release by Italian side Livorno in the
summer but must hone his match fitness before being handed his Premier
League baptism. "He's not ready yet," Zola told Setanta Sports News. "He's
been doing very well and his fitness is improving a lot but it will take him
a couple of more weeks for him to be ready." Zola's West Ham face Arsenal on
Sunday and the Italian has revealed how he hopes to follow in the footsteps
of Arsene Wenger. Wenger has nurtured some of the country's finest
footballing talent and The Hammers' commitment to bringing through young
players was what persuaded him to swap his post with the Italian Under-21s
for a role in the East End. He said: "The project that [chief executive]
Scott Duxbury and [sporting director] Gianluca Nani told me about was to
take young players from here and the rest of the world and develop them.
"That's the part of the job I like the most, helping players get better with
every training session. It was the only reason I came here. The plan is to
compete with the big teams by taking a group of young players and helping
them develop."

Noble Out For Gunners Clash
Goal.com

West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble has been ruled out of this weekend's
clash with Arsenal. The Hammers will be looking to recover from
disappointing back-to-back defeats against Bolton Wanderers and Hull City,
but will now be forced to manage without Noble against the Gunners at Upton
Park. The England Under-21 midfielder tore a calf muscle in training this
week and now faces around three weeks on the sidelines. It causes further
problems for club boss Gianfranco Zola. Zola is already managing without
star striker Dean Ashton, who is out long-term as are defenders Danny
Gabbidon and Jon Spector. "We have Mark Noble who is going to be
unfortunately out for a few weeks with a tear problem in his calf,"
confirmed Zola. "That is the bad news. It happened in training this week."
It has been a frustrating time for Noble so far this season with a hernia
problem, a hamstring strain and a suspension keeping him off the pitch for
long periods.

Barclays Premier Reserve League games this season. The youngster joins Josh
Payne, who is on loan at League One side Cheltenham Town, in leaving Upton

Zola to follow Wenger blueprint
TeamTalk

Gianfranco Zola wants to follow Arsene Wenger's recipe for success by
recruiting the best young players from all over the world. The Italian has
revealed he was tempted to take the Upton Park job because of the club's
plans to revive their reputation as the Academy of Football. And he
revealed it is Wenger's blueprint that he plans to follow as he looks to
build a dynasty in the East End. He said: "The project that Scott Duxbury
and Gianluca Nani told me about was to take young players from here and the
rest of the world and develop them. "That's the part of the job I like the
most, helping players get better with every training session. "It was the
only reason I came here. The plan is to compete with the big teams by taking
a group of young players and helping them develop."
Zola will get his first taste of taking on the Premier League's big four on
Sunday as Wenger's side visit Upton Park. It is a test the Chelsea legend is
relishing, but he knows he is facing a fearsome task to turn around the
slump his side are enduring. They have lost their last two games, at Hull
and at home to Bolton, while Arsenal are on a high after their Champions
League destruction of Fenerbahce. And Zola revealed it is that sort of
performance which makes him believe Arsenal might be the best side to watch
in the world. He said: "They play the best football of any team in this
country and possibly in any other country. "But we will go out and attack
them like we always do. There is no point sitting and waiting for them and
trying to defend against Arsenal because they will always find a way
through. "They have players like Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott who are
wonderful players. "I really like Walcott. He is a regular in his national
side but is only very young. He is very talented.
"You have to admire the way Arsene Wenger manages. He has had a great
influence on the game in this country and he is one of the best managers in
the world.
"I have only met him once since I arrived. We saw each other in a hotel and
we had a quick chat, but no more than that. "But I will not lose any sleep
about this game or the one against Manchester United on Sunday. These are
the games that made me want to come to England. "I will tell my players that
yes, these games are dangerous because you can lose at home. But your
confidence is very high if you win because you have beaten a good team. "You
can use that for the rest of your season. You have got to have faith in your
players and be brave enough to do things your way."
In his seven years at Chelsea, the Italian never once tasted success in a
Premier League game against the Gunners. In 12 appearances against Wenger's
side, Zola notched three goals but could only manage eight defeats and four
draws. He added: "Maybe that will change as a manager! "They have always
been very hard to play against and even harder to beat but things can always
change."

Noble ruled out as Dyer approaches first-team comeback
4:43pm Friday 24th October 2008
Echo
By Rob Pritchard >

WEST Ham United have been hit by yet another injury blow with the news that
Mark Noble will be out for a month with a torn calf muscle. The England
Under-21 midfielder was hurt during a session at the club's Chadwell Heath
training ground this week. The calf problem is the latest in a series of
setbacks for Noble, who missed parts of last season with a hernia problem
and later a hamstring strain. It is also bad news for Hammers' manager
Gianfranco Zola, who has already lost Dean Ashton to a long-term ankle
injury and is also without defenders Danny Gabbidon and Jon Spector. "We
have Mark Noble who is going to be unfortunately out for a few weeks with a
tear problem in his calf," said Zola. "That is the bad news. It happened in
training."
The fit-again Lee Bowyer, Hayden Mullins, Wales international Jack Collison
and Luis Boa Morte will battle to take the absent Noble's place in the team
for Sunday's Premier League visit of Arsenal to Upton Park. However, Zola
has received some positive injury news with Kieron Dyer set to resume full
training within the next three weeks. The England forward, out since August
2007 with a broken leg suffered in a Carling Cup tie at Bristol Rovers, has
resumed light training with the remainder of the first-team squad. Dyer's
return has been delayed by shin splints suffered during his rehabilitation,
but the former Ipswich Town and Newcastle United star's injury nightmare
would appear to be approaching an end. Meanwhile, Wales international
defender James Collins will be included in Zola's matchday squad for the
first time against the Gunners after completing his recovery from a
long-term knee ligament injury. Basildon-based James Tomkins, who has been
out with a medial knee ligament problem suffered during the UEFA European
Under-19 Championship in July, is also set to resume full training on
Monday.

Ashton Facing Long Spell Out
The Sun
By MARK GILBERT

Published: Today

DEAN ASHTON has dealt West Ham a blow by revealing he is unlikely to be back
in first-team contention until the end of the season. The England striker
sprained his ankle in Gianfranco Zola's first training session in charge
last month and was expected to be out of action for three weeks. But the
injury is more severe than first thought and he has admitted he will miss
most of the Hammers' campaign. Ashton told his official website: "I've not
been given a date as to when I'll return. It's more a case of it being at
the end of the season and I'll be really happy if I can play my part in the
team then. "That's looking more likely at the moment. "The club have been
very supportive. Zola has been really good. He's rung up to wish me well.
He's been a real gentleman about it all. "It's just a small thing but it's
just nice for me to know I'm in the manager's thoughts. "My spirits are a
lot higher now I'm off my crutches - I've been off them for a week. I am
working hard at my rehab already and I feel like I am on the way back. "The
worst bit is over. It's so good to be active. I've started cycling and
swimming again already, which bodes well for my recovery time. "I have had
ankle problems in the past but I'm not sure if this is a flare-up of the old
injury, even though it is the same ankle I broke in England training. "I
don't know if it was the recent sprain that exacerbated it either. It's not
anything that can be explained to be honest. "Basically there were pieces of
bone floating around inside my ankle and they had to come out. Surgery was
the only option. "I saw James Calder, the ankle specialist here in England.
I've also seen Van Dyke in Holland. He did the surgery on Cristiano
Ronaldo's ankle over the summer. So I have been in good hands."

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Noble Out for a Month
West Ham Till I Die

More bad news on the injury front today. Mark Noble has torn a calf muscle
and will be out for around four weeks. It will be interesting to see how
Zola reforms the midfield four. The obvious replacement is Mullins, I
suppose, but I wonder whether Lee Bowyer might be brought in from the cold
instead.

I don't really see the team for the Arsenal game changing very much. Reports
suggest that James Collins is pushing for a place, having had an excellent
game for Wales against Germany the week before last. But I can't see Zola
dropping his captain.

Just a word about the snide comments in the previous post. I don't need
advice on how to run this blog. If people don't like it, they cam frankly
bugger off elsewhere. Unlike some other blogs I don't just post for the sake
of it. I also have a very busy schedule at the moment. I've thought about
having a couple of people helping me with it, but it wouldn't be the same
then, I don't think. There have always been periods when I don't post so
often, and the last few weeks has been one of those. That's life.

I won't be at the Arsenal game. I will be flying over the Med on my way to
Israel for a few days. Just a shame it isn't a holiday.

One Game, One Community

Lucas Neill, Carlton Cole and the rest of the squad took time out to show
their support for Kick It Out
24.10.2008

West Ham United players led by captain Lucas Neill showed their support on
Friday for the Kick It Out initiative One Game, One Community at Chadwell
Heath.

The first-team squad gathered for a special shot ahead of preparing for
Sunday's derby match with Arsenal, which has been chosen as the club's day
of action, and also wore special promotional T-shirts during training
itself. Among those taking part with the skipper was the club's Kick It Out
ambassador Carlton Cole, who is an active supporter of the cause.

"Players who have really high profiles who all have team-mates of mixed
races and origin can really make a stand," Cole said. "Our own captain,
Lucas Neill has no place for it, he is against it and as captain he inspires
me to want to put the message across as an ambassador.

"Supporters coming to watch our game against Arsenal will see the T-shirt I
am wearing on the front of our matchday programme and will see the rest of
the boys wear them in our warm-up ... hopefully it will send out a real
message. If you can get these words and messages out to people on a regular
basis, then it may go a long way to making racial abuse of any kind a thing
of the past."

BIG-MATCH FACTS
Arsenal, 2-5 winners over Fenerbahce in Turkey midweek, look to follow up
last Saturday's 3-1 home win over Everton with another three points over
West Ham to stay in touch with the Premier League pacesetters.

A win for West Ham would take them to within a point of the Gunners, but
they are in danger of tumbling to three successive league losses for the
first time under Gianfranco Zola.

This is the fourth of 20 top-flight local derbies in the capital this
season, and the Hammers go into the match top of the table for London
Premier League derbies, courtesy of their 1-2 away win over Fulham. Needless
to say, Chelsea are London's top team in the table that counts, Arsenal the
second best and West Ham third.

Arsenal did the double over West Ham last season, having suffered a trio of
defeats to them in the three previous Premier League clashes.

The Hammers have dropped more home Premier League points to the Gunners than
to any other club (28), yet Arsenal have not recorded successive league wins
at Upton Park for 11 years.

Distance between the clubs: 10 miles (16 kilometres)
Arsenal are West Ham's nearest neighbours as far as the Premier League is
concerned. The Gunners are making the shortest journey of any Premier League
club this weekend.

HEAD TO HEAD
West Ham were one of nine clubs Arsenal did the double over last season; the
Gunners were one of two clubs to do the double over the Hammers. The other
was Chelsea.

Marlon Harewood came off the bench to score a late winner in this
corresponding fixture on Guy Fawkes Day 2006. The celebration of then
manager Alan Pardew so angered his opposite number, that Arsene Wenger
famously refused to shake hands afterwards, which cost him a £10,000 fine.

Five months later the Hammers brought an end to Arsenal's unbeaten league
record at the Emirates Stadium and wrapped up a first ever Premier League
'double' over them, and first against their London rivals since 1964-65.

Upson unconcerned

Matthew Upson has said that talk of financial worries at West Ham is not
something that unduly concerns him. West Ham United and England defender
Upson, talking to SkySports during a break in a club initiative this morning
admitted that he was happy to hear manager Gianfranco Zola confirm that he
was under no pressure to sell any players during the next transfer window.
"For the manager to come out with that comment is very reassuring," he said.
"We don't know the full ins and outs of the financial situation at the club
with people presuming it is in trouble due to the current crisis. "It is an
interesting one - but as a player, it is not something I would focus on."
Upson, who is set to feature against Arsenal at the Boleyn on Sunday
afternoon echoed Mark Noble's sentiments earlier in the week with regards to
what many have considered a so-so start to the season. However he added that
under Zola the team were moving in the right direction. "Perhaps we have
lacked the cutting edge we want, but I think on the whole the way we have
played under the new manager is in a good style," he said. "I think if you
stick to what believe in eventually the results will come your way."

Reid seeking first team football

Kyel Reid has said that he is willing to drop to a lower division on a
temporary basis - if it enhances his chances of making the grade at West Ham
United. The 20-year-old winger has endured a frustrating time at West Ham in
the last two years, with just a handful of first team appearances to his
name. His only appearance under Gianfranco Zola so far was as a late
substitute in the disappointing 1-0 Carling Cup defeat at Watford. As a
result, Reid - like Hayden Mullins earlier this week - admitted that he may
have to seek a move elsewhere should he continue to remain on the fringes of
the first team squad.
Talking to the Waltham Forest Gurdian, he said: He (Zola) said that I will
get my chance but that I've just got to be patient. I've been on the bench a
few times but I've been out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury.
I'm back now so hopefully I can get back in the squad regularly. "I just
want to get out there and show the gaffer what I can do," he added. "I can
get a chance to do that in his team, or hopefully go out on loan and get a
few games under my belt for a month or so.
"I went on loan before, so hopefully I can do something similar again at
another Championship club."

West Ham Utd v Arsenal: match preview
KUMB.com
Filed: Thursday, 23rd October 2008
By: Preview Percy

Next up is Arsenal. Let's face it - there's not much to like about this
club.

The bribery and corruption that got them promoted, the manager whose
eyesight problem is suspiciously selective, the authorities' lenient
approach to consistent breaches of regulations and a fan base that contains
more than its fair share of the ignorant all contribute to a club that only
its supporters could love.

They have been trophy-free for a few seasons now and this has led to a
mini-exodus of more experienced players over the past few seasons. In this
season's window they were unable to persuade the likes of Flamini and Hleb
to stay. The frankly bonkers Lehmann was probably past his sell-by date
anyway – not that he'd admit it – and departed for Stuttgart having lost his
place to Almunia last season. Others, such as Senderos, departed on loan,
presumably never to return. On the incoming front Wenger found himself
unable to compete financially with Liverpool over Gareth Barry and,
presumably upset that he hadn't thought of illegally approaching the Villa
midfielder first, Wenger found himself pulling out of the bidding well
before the point at which the scousers themselves withdrew.

Instead we saw a strange transfer with the arrival of Silvestre who was
deemed to be surplus to requirements up at Salford. This was apparently the
first transfer between the two clubs since Chalks last bought a round. The
most notable arrival was probably that of French midfielder Nasri from
Marseilles for a reported fee of about £12.5m. All of which means that the
current Arsenal squad is more dependent than it used to be on a youth policy
that relies heavily on snapping up players produced by other clubs across
Europe.

Almunia will start in goal on Sunday. In the absence of Gallas and Toure he
has been skippering the side and has amusingly suggested that he would like
to play for England when he qualifies next year for a UK passport. It's a
shame really because had he signed for Arsenal a few years previously he
might have got into the England side on a passport made out of a John Bull
printing set, such documents being par for the course at Highbury in those
days.

The starting line-up the other night against Fenerbahce contained an
unfamiliar back four in front of Almunia. Injuries to the likes of Gallas,
Sagna and Toure saw Song partner Silvestre in the middle with Eboue at right
back and Clichy on the left. Eboue arrived a few years back from the Ivory
Coast by way of Belgium where Arsenal had a much-criticised "arrangement"
with Beveren that exploited the less stringent immigration and football
registration laws applicable in Belgium, where African footballers have been
mercilessly exploited by clubs, management and agents. Elsewhere across the
back, Gallas' hamstring and Sagna's ankle are both expected to have
recovered in time for Sunday, though Toure's shoulder is still likely to
rule him out.

In midfield, another medium-term absentee is Rosicky who has one of those
hamstring chappies. A return by those missing from the defence in midweek
may see Eboue move into midfield. Flavour of the month Theo Walcott has been
playing on the wing though he does have an eye for goal, though those raving
about his hat-trick against Croatia have a habit of going a bit quiet when
his performances in the subsequent internationals are raised. Wenger started
the kid poached from a cash-strapped Southampton on the bench against
Everton, where Fabregas, Denilson, Fabregas and Nasri played across the
middle. Walcott had returned for the Fenerbahce match alongside Diaby in a
five-man midfield that saw Adebayor up front on his own – though Walcott's
role was more advanced.

Adebayor is a player who ticks at least two of the boxes applicable to the
traditional Arsenal striker. Firstly there is the dodgy transfer dealing
that saw his club Monaco withdraw from a deal that would have taken him to
the Boleyn a few years back despite having agreed a fee and despite the
player having agreed personal terms. Any contact between Wenger and his old
club at that time was, of course, purely coincidental as was the fact that a
few months later Adebayor signed for Arsenal. Adebayor, like his fellow
striker Van Persie also enjoys a bit of what the authorities refer to as
"simulation" – a tradition that goes back a long way with Arsenal.
Interestingly, Adebayor picked up a yellow card for a dive last week against
Everton so maybe referees are starting to do their jobs at last.

Van Persie is likely to partner Adebayor up front, with Croatian-Brazilian
Eduardo still a month or two away from a return following the horrific
broken leg sustained up at Birmingham last season – one incident that was
seen in perfect 20-20 vision and Hi-Definition by Arsene Wenger. Also in
contention will be Nicklas Bendtner with whom Adebayor had a hilarious row
during the 5-1 Carling Cup defeat to Spurs a while back after which they
went through a spell where it appeared that they wouldn't pass to each
other.

And what of ourselves? Well personnel-wise I expect us to remain unchanged
from the eleven that started up at Hull though there must be a temptation to
add James Collins into the squad at least. I would have expected there to
have been an emphasis on finishing practice in training this week given the
chances that were spurned up on Humberside. The big question is whether Zola
is likely to change the formation that he has employed since his arrival
that has seen Etherington, Di Michele and latterly Bellamy playing as
auxiliary strikers behind Cole, as opposed to a more orthodox 4-4-2 that
would see Etherington drop back into the left of midfield. If I had to make
a guess I'd expect us to start with the 4-3-2-1 but wouldn't be at all
surprised if we switched at some time during the match if numbers were
required in midfield.

This fixture has, of course seen some fun in the past, Viera's spitting at
Neil Ruddock, Bergkamp's penchant for throwing the elbow about, and of
course the stand-up argument between Wenger and Alan Pardew that cost the
Frenchman a £10,000 fine for improper conduct. There had been bad blood
between the two managers for a few months following comments from Pardew
that suggested that Arsenal's habit of selecting UK player-free teams might
not be a particularly good thing for British football. Wenger disgracefully
played the "racism" card in response to Pardew's comments – something that
was a bit rich given his club's aforementioned Belgian connections.

Predictions? Well few outside E13 will be going for a home win for this one
– especially given the form shown by the visitors in Europe in midweek.
However, there is always an extra unquantifiable edge to a derby match and,
against an ordinary Fulham side and a spirited Hull, Arsenal have proved
that they are far from invincible. Sunderland too were unlucky to come away
with only a point so this is not the mission impossible that many are
saying. Of course there have been a few defensive hitches of late in our own
defence and the prospect of us winning may depend on our being able to keep
an all-too-rare clean sheet. I'll therefore plump for a 1-1 draw on this
occasion in the hope that the officials will keep an eye on the diving!

Enjoy the game!

Last season: Lost 0-1. Robert Green kept Arsenal at bay as yet another
terrible decision by the officials against this opponent denied us a share
of the points as Ljungberg's valid equaliser was wrongly chalked off for
offside.

Danger men: Fabregas, Walcott.

Look out for: Dives, punch-ups in the technical area and just about anything
else that their manager might have difficulty in making out.

Upson ignores cash crisis

West Ham defender Matt Upson has dismissed concerns that the club's
financial problems are affecting the players. The future of the club has
been the subject of speculation after Hammers owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson's
assets suffered when Iceland's Landsbanki bank was hit by the current
worldwide financial turmoil. Reports have suggested Hammers boss Gianfranco
Zola may be forced to sell star names to help ease the club's financial
problems. However, Zola has insisted he is under no pressure to part company
with any players and Upson admits that is good news for all the squad at
Upton Park. "For the manager to come out with that comment is very
reassuring," Upson told Sky Sports News. "We don't know the full ins and
outs of the financial situation at the club with people presuming it is in
trouble due to the current crisis. "It is an interesting one, but as a
player it is not something I would focus on."
West Ham have won only one of their last four games after making a bright
start to life under Zola and face Arsenal this weekend. Upson has been
impressed by Zola so far and is confident results will soon improve.
"Perhaps we have lacked the cutting edge we want, but I think on the whole
the way we have played under the new manager is in a good style and I think
if you stick to what believe in eventually the results will come your way,"
concluded Upson.

Sometimes you've got to go down to go Upson - Hammers defender so glad he
left Arsenal
By KEN DYER

Not many players would consider leaving Arsenal as a good career move but it
has worked for Matthew Upson. The 29-year-old defender's failure to make a
real impact after five seasons and 34 senior appearances at the Gunners must
have been difficult to accept but it says much for Upson's character that he
has learned much from those early disappointments. On Sunday Upson, who was
England's central defender alongside Rio Ferdinand for the World Qup
qualifying victories against Kazakhstan and Belarus, lines up against his
former club, now confident in his own ability to cope with whatever comes
his way. After leaving Highbury, Upson initially dropped a level when he
signed for Birmingham and after five seasons at St Andrews, he joined West
Ham last January. He said: 'It was the right thing to do when I left
Arsenal. I don't look back on it and think that it was a mistake. My view
now is that I didn't make the most of the situation I was in. 'I was a lot
younger, not so confident and mentally aware of how to approach things, how
to train, all the things that, in the six years since I left the club, I've
learned to do better. 'Whenever you leave Arsenal it's normally to go down a
step and that was true for me. It was a bit of a slap around the face for
me, a message to change something about
myself. 'Maybe I needed to fail at Arsenal to see what I had to do. There's
no dressing it up, I failed there and I had to look hard at myself. 'I had
to acknowledge that I needed to change the way I was living, the way I
trained, my mental approach to games.'
Upson's progress has been recognised by Fabio Capello, who picked the West
Ham defender to replace the injured John Terry in England's recent World Cup
qualifiers.
On Sunday Upson faces another big match against Arsenal, whose side include
in-form England teammate Theo Walcott. Upson said: 'Theo has a very solid
head on his shoulders and he will need that because of the attention which
will be focused on him. I've spent time with him though and he's a very
down-to-earth guy. I am sure he will be guided very well.'
West Ham team may have lost successive matches against Bolton and Hull but
Upson has been impressed by the impact of new manager Gianfranco Zola. 'The
last couple of results have been disappointing,' he said. 'They were two
matches which we perhaps should have won but didn't so now we need to win a
couple that
we're not expected to do well in. 'It's a fine line and the results haven't
happened recently but we should remember we're still trying to adapt to the
manager's way of doing things so the results are not going to be instant.
'The players are capable of playing the way the manager wants but it's just
a case of getting into the habit of doing things in a different way. 'He
wants to find solutions. He's a fresh, very positive, animated kind of guy,
very approachable and a good man to work for. 'We know we have a real job on
our hands this weekend though. In terms of passing and moving, which is what
attacking play is all about, Arsenal are probably the best in the
League.'Matthew Upson was speaking on a visit to the Braintree Rethink
Carers Support Group, winners of a £4,000 grant from the Premier League's
'Creating Chances Places for Players' - an initiative which uses players to
highlight the community work carried out by the 20 Premier League clubs.

Arsenal will have both captain William Gallas (thigh) and fellow centre-half
Kolo Toure (shoulder) back in the squad for Sunday's trip to West Ham.
Full-back Bacary Sagna (knee) also missed the Champions League win over

Sagna has 'small chance' of facing West Ham

Arsenal could have three defenders back for the trip to Upton Park on
Sunday. When he spoke to Arsenal TV Online on Thursday, Arsène Wenger
revealed that William Gallas (hamstring) and Kolo Toure (shoulder) were fit
to face West Ham while Bacary Sagna (knee) was on course to return for
Wednesday's local derby with Tottenham. The outlook was even brighter at
Wenger's pre-match press conference on Friday with Sagna now ahead of
schedule in his recovery. "I expect William and Kolo to be fit. Even Bacary
Sagna has a small chance to be fit," confirmed Wenger. If Sagna recovers in
time for Sunday's game, Arsenal's injury list would be down to two -
long-term absentees Eduardo and Tomas Rosicky.

Reid told to wait for his Hammers chance
10:07am Friday 24th October 2008
Echo

TALENTED youngster Kyel Reid has been told to be patient and wait for his
West Ham United chance. The winger is held in high regard by the management
staff at Upton Park but injury has so far limited the 20-year-old to just
one appearance - as a late substitute in a Carling Cup defeat at Watford -
under new boss Gianfranco Zola. However, Reid revealed that the Italian has
taken the effort to give him some assurances about his Hammers future. "He
(Zola) has said that I will get my chance but that I've just got to be
patient," said Reid. "I've been on the bench a few times, but I've been out
for a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury. I'm back now so hopefully I
can get back in the squad regularly."
Reid gave Zola a glimpse of his potential with an all-action display in
front of the watching boss during Tuesday night's 1-0 win over an Arsenal
second string. Now the former England under-19 international is stepping it
up a gear to force his way into the Sardinian's first team plans, although
he hasn't ruled out securing a loan move away from the Boleyn Ground to get
more experience. "I just want to get out there and show the gaffer what I
can do so I can get a chance to do that in his team, or hopefully get out on
loan and get a few games under my belt for a month or so," added Reid, who
has had loan spells at Barnsley and Crystal Palace in the last two seasons.
"I went on loan before, so hopefully I can do something similar again at
another Championship club."
The South London-born wideman also admitted that he has been keeping a close
eye on some of the senior members of the squad in a bid to pick up useful
tips. He added: "I feel that I'm improving a lot. I'm getting older and
wiser and starting to realise that I can learn a lot from guys like Luis Boa
Morte and Hayden Mullins.
"It's always good to train with them because they've done quite a bit in
their careers."

It will take two years for us to get Zola's master plan, insists West Ham
midfielder Noble
By Sportsmail Reporter

Last updated at 10:34 AM on 24th October 2008

West Ham midfielder Mark Noble believes it could take two years before the
players master new manager Gianfranco Zola's formation. The Italian has got
rid of former boss Alan Curbishley's cautious approach and wants the Hammers
to a play in a 4-3-3 system. But after losing 1-0 to Hull City last weekend
- their second successive Premier League defeat of the season - Noble says
his side need more time to adjust to Zola's ideas, reports The Daily Mirror.
The England Under-21 midfielder also claims West Ham will be nowhere near
ready for Sunday's visit of Arsenal. The formation is a good one,' he said.
'Obviously it's going to be a slow process, though. 'It's not going to work
over months, it's going to be a couple of years before he finally gets it
going. 'I'm really enjoying the role I've been given, but then again it's
only enjoyable if you're winning.' The Hammers are currently eighth but
Noble says his side should be challenging for Europe. 'It's not enough,' he
said. 'We thought we should have won last week against Hull. 'But it just
hasn't happened and now we have Arsenal and Manchester United in the next
two games. We will have a big job to get some points out of them.'
Midfielder Hayden Mullins says he will consider his future in the transfer
window if he fails to win a regular first-team place. 'If I get my chance I
have to take it," he said. "And if I don't then we'll have to see where that
leaves us.'

HAMMERS NEWS: Irons rule out Collins return to Cardiff

WEST HAM have ruled out defender James Collins returning to former club
Cardiff City, according to reports. The Wales international centre back has
not featured for the Irons' first team since suffering knee ligament damage
in a reserve team game in January. He is now back in contention and The
Mirror suggest that Cardiff are keen on the 25-year-old. However, the source
adds that the Hammers are keen to keep hold of Collins as cover. Collins -
who signed from the Bluebirds in a double-deal involving Danny Gabbidon in
2005 - is a favourite at Upton Park after playing a starring role in the
Hammers' spectacular escape from relegation in the 2006-7 season.

Blades chief hits out at 'Southern bias'
The Sheffield Star
Published Date: 24 October 2008
By James Shield

SHEFFIELD United chairman Kevin McCabe has hit-out at the 'Southern bias' he
believes the club have faced after an independent arbitration panel ordered
West Ham to pay them damages over the Carlos Tevez Affair. McCabe, the
driving force behind United's campaign for justice following their
relegation from the Premier League two seasons ago, suspects Bramall Lane
has become the victim of a smear campaign since the landmark legal ruling.
West Ham, who are attempting to appeal the verdict at the Court of
Arbitration for Sport, were found guilty of breaching transfer regulations
when they signed Tevez and his fellow Argentine Javier Masherano from Corin
thians in August 2006. Both players have since left Upton Park but United
successfully argued that Tevez, who continued to represent West Ham after
they were fined for breaking rules outlawing third party ownership, was
worth at least three points in his team's battle to avoid relegation; the
margin between the South Yorkshire outfit and their rivals from the capital.
Confirming that United are now in the process of finalising their claim
ahead of a hearing next year, McCabe, commenting on the coverage which
greeted the verdict, told The Star: "I think there might be a little bit of
southern bias. "People seem to have forgotten that we're the innocent party
in all of this. "The only thing we have been is an innocent party which
refused to roll over. "It's a pity that the whole thing wasn't sorted-out
sooner which, of course, would have been the best thing for everyone. "But
unfortunately it wasn't and we were right to fight on."
United expect to hear later this month if CAS, despite previously suggesting
they were powerless to intervene, will grant West Ham's request and McCabe
added: "We're currently putting together our claim and, when that is
considered, we fully expect it to be scruntinised before an actual amount is
decided. "West Ham are making an attempt to appeal it elsewhere but, as far
as we are concerned, the outcome of the arbitration was binding under
English law." Meanwhile, McCabe revealed that United are continuing their
search for "investment partners" despite the global credit crunch. McCabe
has previously spoken with two parties from America about the possibility of
injecting fresh capital into United. "It's about roots and wings," he said.
"Our roots are the community and we must never lose sight of that. "To get
to the highest level we can achieve though we also need wings and it's
something we've looked at. "But we've got to be patient though and that's
what anyone coming in in the future would be: partners."

West Ham players need two years to learn Zola's tactics, says Mark Noble
The Mirror
By Neil Mcleman 24/10/2008

Mark Noble has warned that West Ham's players could take two years to get
used to Gianfranco Zola's new tactics. After former boss Alan Curbishley's
cautious approach, the Italian wants his side to play 4-3-3, with the wide
men tucking in when opponents have the ball. But after a second defeat in a
row at Hull last weekend, the England Under-21 midfielder claimed the Irons
needed a lot more time to master the formation. And they certainly will not
be ready for Sunday's visit of Arsenal.
"The formation is a good one," said the 21-year-old. "Obviously it's going
to be a slow process, though. "It's not going to work over months, it's
going to be a couple of years before he finally gets it going. "I'm really
enjoying the role I've been given, but then again it's only enjoyable if
you're winning."
The Hammers sit in a respectable eighth place with 12 points after eight
games. But after recent losses to Hull and Bolton, Noble admitted the club
should be flying higher. "It's not enough," he said. "We thought we should
have won last week against Hull. "But it just hasn't happened and now we
have Arsenal and Manchester United in the next two games. We will have a big
job to get some points out of them."
Hayden Mullins says he will consider his future in the transfer window if he
fails to win a regular first-team place. "If I get my chance I have to take
it," he said. "And if I don't then we'll have to see where that leaves us."

Gallas and Toure available for West Ham trip
Arsenal.com
By Richard Clarke

William Gallas and Kolo Toure are back for the trip to West Ham on Sunday.
The Ivorian injured his shoulder against Everton last Saturday and missed
the game at Fenerbahce in midweek while the Frenchman was absent for both
because of a hamstring problem. However the pair are set to return for the
game at Upton Park.
In addition, Bacary Sagna (knee) is in line to make his comeback against
Tottenham next week. "It looks like Kolo Toure and William Gallas will be
available while Sagna could be available for Wednesday," Wenger told Arsenal
TV Online. The Arsenal manager also clarified his comments over the return
of Eduardo. At the AGM on Thursday, Wenger said the Croatian striker is
"three weeks away from playing competitive football".
Speaking to the Club's official website later on, he said: "What I mean by
competitive football is joining in completely with a normal training
session. After that he has to come back to match-fitness. But he is ahead of
where we expected him to be and that is fantastic news."

Influential Parker retains his England ambitions
E24.com
23 October 2008
By JONATHAN CLEGG

SCOTT PARKER is hoping that his consistent performances for West Ham can
earn him an England recall after admitting he has not given up hope of
forcing his way into Fabio Capello's Three Lions squad. The Hammers
midfielder has not featured for the national team since being handed a
starting role for the infamous defeat in Croatia two years ago during Steve
McClaren's ill-fated attempt to lead England to Euro 2008. But Parker has
finally overcome the injury problems that have hindered his international
ambitions and believes he is close to regaining the form that earned him a
£10m move to Chelsea in 2004. Now the 28-year-old is hoping to catch the eye
of England coach Capello, who has already elevated Hammers team-mates
Matthew Upson and Robert Green to the national team set-up. Upson deputised
for the injured John Terry in this month's World Cup qualifiers against
Kazakhstan and Belarus while goalkeeper Green watched from the bench. Parker
was one of the few first-team regulars forced to remain at Chadwell Heath
during the international break and the time at the training ground has
focused his mind on winning an England recall. He said: "I haven't been
thinking 'if only' about England. It's such a fine line. All I can do is
play well for West Ham and that's my priority. I have to stay fit as well
and if I can do that then hopefully it will happen for me. "It's been a bit
of a stop-start season with the international breaks but it's been good for
us having the new manager and he has been hands-on with the players that are
here. "There were about 10 or 12 of us left over so we got some fitness work
in as well."
The extra sessions with Gianfranco Zola have given Parker an extended look
at the new Hammers boss in action on the training field and he is impressed
by the Italian's style of coaching. Zola has emphasised the importance of
helping individual players improve and Parker is optimistic that the
Italian's tutelage will also help him develop into a regular member of the
England squad. "He was a fantastic player and that has helped massively,"
Parker said. "We've got a young squad and to have a manager who was such a
great player not that long ago helps, especially as so many people remember
him or even played against him. "He was always going to command respect as a
manager, whether or not he was a great player, but because he was, he has
got that respect. "From the ideas I've seen and the training, you can tell
he is definitely going to improve players.

Zola needs time to build team - Noble
E24
23 October 2008
By JONATHAN CLEGG

MARK NOBLE has asked West Ham fans to remain patient with new boss
Gianfranco Zola after admitting that the Italian's Upton Park revolution
could take years to yield positive results. The Hammers slumped to a second
successive league defeat at Hull City last weekend and memories of the
team's positive start under Zola are rapidly fading. The West Ham manager
has promised to deliver an entertaining brand of attacking football to Upton
Park. But despite dominating possession at the KC Stadium, the Hammers
failed to create enough clear-cut chances as Michael Turner's 50th-minute
header lifted Hull to third in the Premier League table. With back-to-back
matches against Arsenal and Manchester United up next, the club's supporters
have started to question whether Zola's new-look 4-3-3 formation offers the
best hope of getting results. But Hammers midfielder Noble insists the club
must keep faith in Zola's methods, despite conceding that the fans could be
in for a long wait before the manager realises his vision of a winning West
Ham team playing stylish football. He said: "The new system is working but
obviously it's going to be a slow process. "It's not going to work over a
few months, it's going to be a couple of years before he finally gets it
going. "You've just got to keep doing what you're doing, working hard and
hopefully that time will come. "We felt we should have won at Hull. In the
first half, especially, the way we played and kept the ball, the way we
passed it - we should have won the game and had it wrapped up with the
chances we had. But we didn't and we got punished."
England Under-21 star Noble has had to adapt his own role in the team since
Zola replaced Alan Curbishley last month and now operates as part of a
three-man midfield alongside Scott Parker and Valon Behrami. The 21-year-old
admits he enjoys the greater freedom to get forward in support of the team's
attacking players, but he warned that greater discipline will be required in
the upcoming games against two of the Premier League's Big Four. "I'm really
enjoying my role in the new system," Noble said. "Then again, it's only
enjoyable if you're winning. We haven't in the last two games so you can't
laugh and smile about it. "We've got 12 points from our opening eight
matches and it's not enough. We thought we should have won last week
[against Bolton] as well, and again at Hull we felt we should have taken the
three points. "But it hasn't happened and now we've got Arsenal and Man
United in the next two games so we've got a big job to try and do our best
to get some points out of them.

Bellamy can give the cutting edge
E24
23 October 2008
By JONATHAN CLEGG

GIANFRANCO ZOLA has backed striker Craig Bellamy to help his shot-shy West
Ham side overcome their goal drought against Arsenal on Sunday. The Hammers
slumped to a second straight Premier League defeat at Hull City last weekend
as Zola's misfiring forwards wasted a host of opportunities at the KC
Stadium. The Italian has promised to bring free-flowing, attacking football
to Upton Park but his team have now scored just three goals in their past
four games. The Hammers boss admitted that his side must become more
clinical if they are to end their barren run. He said: "I'm disappointed
that we didn't finish the chances that we created.
"Probably right now, that is the missing part with this team. We need to
improve on the finishing because we are creating a lot but we are not
finishing. "Obviously the finishing part is the most difficult thing.
Managers can improve a lot of things, but it is down to the players to
improve. "I totally trust the ability of my players and I am sure we're
going to get it right soon."
Zola believes that Bellamy could help the Hammers get back on track against
Arsenal after coming through his first 90 minutes of the season at Hull. The
Wales striker seems to have made a full recovery from a series of injuries
that have derailed his career since joining West Ham in July last year.
Bellamy was guilty of wasting chances in his first start since February but
West Ham manager Zola is convinced the 29-year-old will give his side an
extra cutting edge as he regains his best form.
"Craig has done well but I know he can play much better," Zola said. "You
can't ask too much from him after such a long time out but we really rely on
him a lot because he is an important player for us. "I was pleased with him,
especially in the first half. I didn't expect him to be at his best but I am
confident he will be back soon with his best performances for us.

Zola to ditch Bowyer but holds onto Mullins By Harry Amber-Mitchell

West Ham's exodus of players looks set to start with a broom in the face of
the fring players, with Lee Bowyer set to be the fiest to fall in the
clear-out. The Echo is reporting that while Hayden Mullins has apparently
been told he has a future at the club, the likes of Boywer, Calum Davenport
and James Collins are all heading for the exit. They would be the first of
up to eight, with a large amount of first-teamers also in the picture to be
departing as well. Mullins has said he's happy at the club, despite not
getting his chance in the first team recently, and believes Zola just needs
time to learn about his game. "I haven't spoke to him personally as yet
because he's got to get his feet under the table first and get to know
everyone," he said. "I don't really want to go and knock on his door and ask
why I'm not playing. It's just a case of waiting for my chance." Who knows
when that chance might be? If the entire midfield is sold in January, the
Hammers might have to rely on him after all...
