Benayoun still waiting - Sky Sports
By Graeme Bailey - Created on 26 Jun 2007

Yossi Benayoun is still hoping he can secure a move to Liverpool.
The West Ham midfielder has agreed a new deal with the club, but Liverpool
have mounted a bid for his services.
Because of Liverpool's interest, Benayoun's new contract remains unsigned.
The player's agent Ronen Katzav admits that Benayoun's future is still not
decided.
"We are still waiting," Katzav told skysports.com.
"The deal is still in place with West Ham. We are waiting to see if the two
clubs can come to an agreement.
"I am not going to say Yossi is desperate for a move at all, but it is only
natural - any player in the world would be attracted by Liverpool."
Reports have also suggested that Sven Goran Eriksson could make a move for
Benayoun, if he takes charge at Manchester City.

Arsenal interest excites Tevez - Sky Sports
By Mark Buckingham - Created on 26 Jun 2007

Carlos Tevez admits he is 'excited' by the possibility of interest from
Arsenal.
The striker is considering his future, with West Ham United hoping to hang
on to the Argentine after his influential end to last season.
He has been linked with Real Madrid and Internazionale, and has also
suggested he is looking to join a big club over the summer.
Rumours have now claimed that Arsenal could move for Tevez following the
departure of captain Thierry Henry to Barcelona.
Tevez, who is on Copa America duty with Argentina, concedes he would relish
the chance of a move to Emirates Stadium as he is keen to stay in the
Premier League.
"I know people are now talking about Arsenal and obviously that is something
I am excited about," said Tevez in the Sun.
"It's another big club and the good thing is I wouldn't have to move out of
London. I also already know English football and I like it.
"Arsenal's style is more technical than physical, so I could fit in no
problem.
"My transfer is being talked about a lot. It's beautiful to be wanted by
various clubs."
Meanwhile, Tevez told Gazzetta dello Sport that he would plump for Inter
ahead of Real, if he was given the choice.
He said: "Inter is a great club. There is a true possibility that I will
wear the Nerazzurri colours next season.
"It's also true that Real Madrid are interested in my services, but my agent
knows exactly how I feel about it - better Inter than Real."

Hammers' Tevez keen on switch to Inter Milan - Soccernet

West Ham striker Carlos Tevez admits there is a strong possibility he will
move to Inter Milan this summer.

The Argentinian international, who is currently preparing for the Copa
America with his country, moved to Upton Park from Brazilian side
Corinthians at the start of last term along with international team-mate
Javier Mascherano.
In a season marred by controversy over the legality of the duo's transfer,
23-year-old Tevez ended on a high by scoring crucial goals to preserve the
Hammers' top-flight status - in the process attracting the attention of a
host of top clubs.
Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked
with a move for Tevez, but the South American favours a switch to Italy.
'Inter is a great club,' Tevez told Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello
Sport.
'There is a true possibility that I will wear the Nerazzurri colours next
season.
'It's also true that Real Madrid are interested in my services but my agent
knows exactly how I feel about it - better Inter than Real.'
Speculation that Tevez would leave West Ham increased after he preserved the
club's Premiership status by hitting the winning goal against Manchester
United on the final day of last season.
And the player admits that his fine end-of-season form came as no surprise,
revealing that he felt at home in the claret and blue shirt.
'I didn't have problems adapting at West Ham,' Tevez continued.
'I didn't speak English but nevertheless I made myself understood on the
pitch.'
Despite his claim that the language barrier did not hamper his start to life
in England, Tevez admits playing alongside compatriots Hernan Crespo, Julio
Cruz and Javier Zanetti at the San Siro would make for a smooth transition
to life in Serie A.
'Inter's team is like an Argentina colony,' he added.
'I wouldn't have language issues at Inter.'

Looking For Goals - WHO
Alex V - Tue Jun 26 2007

West Ham need a top striker, and maybe they need two. By telling Harewood to
leave, Curbishley has basically set his sights on a top-quality striking
partnership at the club. But by my calculations we have one top striker just
off crutches, and another courting the top clubs in Europe for a transfer.
Where does Curbishley find his goal machine?

Obviously everybody wants Tevez to stay - presumably we have made him and
his 'advisors' know that we will match or even beat any offer for his
services. But when the rumoured suitors for his signature are clubs like
Real Madrid, Man Utd, Arsenal and Inter Milan, then the prospects for us
don't look too smart. The only reason that Tevez would stay is because of
the bond forged between him and the supporters, and possibly financially
because either the 'right' contracts couldn't be arranged with other clubs,
or that another year might be a way to make a lot of money out of West Ham
and still get the big sale at the end of next season. If he was obviously
going to move clubs then I think we'd know it by now - there must be a
chance he will stay. But if I was him, I wouldn't.

If he goes then we have a hell of a big hole to fill in the squad, but even
if he stays we must strengthen the striking department to stand any chance
of really making a splash in the league next season. We have Ashton, and
fingers crossed he is the player he was before his injury. Zamora and Cole
look likely to still be around - I think Zamora would be encouraged to leave
though if we are busy in the transfer market. I think basically that we need
one top striker if Tevez stays - if he goes we need TWO!

The players that we have been solidly linked with point to a certain
strategy from Curbishley - he wants proven Premiership strikers, players for
whom a certain level of performance is closer to being guaranteed. I totally
agree with this approach - too many clubs have spent big money on
foreign-based players with a lot of ability who have totally failed to
perform in this league. Or taken a year to settle in, as Tevez did.

There's no doubt that Darren Bent was the absolutely obvious choice for us
this Summer - missing out on him is a big blow. It's easy to say that he
wasn't worth £18 million, but given that there are no obvious options
elsewhere to buy a proven top-quality Premiership striker then it was a
no-brainer for West Ham. But he didn't come. Everton wouldn't sell Johnson,
Defoe scotched the idea in public pretty quickly. Suddenly Curbishley's
options look distinctly limited.

Craig Bellamy seems to be a player who comes with a lot of baggage - when
someone as tight-lipped as Shearer breaks ranks to criticise him then you
know there is something in the rumour that he is a very difficult
personality to deal with. There is absolutely no doubt that on the field,
playing at his best, Bellamy is a brilliant striker. It's the affect he may
have on the dressing room that will be putting Curbishley off, and ours is a
dressing room that proved pretty fragile last season. Maybe best left alone
I think, though I suspect Curbishley knows that he is an option and may turn
to him if other paths leads nowhere.

David Nugent is more of an option - we are rumoured to be one of the clubs
who have talked to the player. I think Nugent's scoring record is
fascinating given that when you watch him play he doesn't really seem to
have any great attributes to his game - not great in the air, and no great
pace or strength. The fact that he scores a lot of goals makes me think he's
a clever player, and he has age on his side. Any player brought in from that
level is a gamble, but of course Ashton was shunned as a prospect for many
years by Premiership scouts. If there is money to spare then I think we
would be wise to consider him as a purchase, but as a prospect not as the
finished article - he certainly can't be expected to be in the class of Bent
or Tevez.

Other than that, in this country, who could we buy? I don't see another
option really. Any other available prospect in this country seems unable to
improve us - the next best option may in fact be to keep Harewood! There are
a number of long-shot purchases that Curbishley may already have enquired
about - Yakubu at Middlesbrough, Martins at Newcastle, Anelka at Bolton,
McCarthy at Blackburn - but surely the clubs won't be selling those without
a fight to the death. One little outside shot might be Crouch at Liverpool,
if he could be persuaded to come.

But other than that Curbishley has to look abroad, and any signing comes
with a 'gamble' label attached. Ryan Babel looked awesome in the Under-21
tournament this Summer, and has already pledged himself to an Arsenal
future, typical! I certainly doubt how clued up Curbishley is about the
foreign market, he wasn't a big spender in that way at Charlton, I think he
will be relying on our scouts. Given that we are willing to splash the cash
on wages, I wonder if there isn't a big name perhaps the wrong side of 30
who could come in for a season and perform.

But unless something inspirational turns up elsewhere, I think Curbishley
will end up settling for a domestic player or players that don't quite fit
the bill. Nugent, at £6 million-ish, would be a safe signing for a good
prospect who could turn out to be a great one, but Curbishley would be
buying him thinking that he would prefer him on the bench. Let's hope that
something inspirational turns up, if he's called Tevez then all the better
:)

Reo-Coker back on Villa radar - TeamTalk

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill will this week attempt to resurrect his
attempt to sign West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker.
Villa have made contact with the Hammers and, although no formal bid has
been made, are understood to be ready to pay £7million for the England
Under-21 captain.
West Ham are looking for a larger offer for the player they bought from
Wimbledon for just £500,000 three and a half years ago.
But reports indicating they want £10-12million for Reo-Coker are believed to
be wide of the mark, with £8-9million a more realistic figure.
The 23-year-old, who led England to the semi-finals in the European Under-21
Championships in Holland earlier this month, has made it clear his days at
Upton Park are numbered.
Villa report back for pre-season training on July 4 and O'Neill is keen to
start bringing in new blood sooner rather than later with the war chest
promised him by owner Randy Lerner.
He wants time to blend any newcomers in with his current squad after having
only two weeks' preparation time last summer following his arrival as David
O'Leary's successor in early August.
But the Irishman is aware he could face competition from Manchester City for
Reo-Coker if Sven-Goran Eriksson takes charge at Eastlands.
O'Neill has already lost the services of one experienced midfielder in Gavin
McCann to Bolton, while there is a question mark over the future of Steven
Davis, who has been linked with a move to Fulham alongside former Northern
Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez.
Fringe midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba's days at Villa are also numbered, with
Benfica reportedly interested in the former Manchester United player, who
ended last season on loan at Burnley.

Reds interest stalling Benayoun - TeamTalk

West Ham playmaker Yossi Benayoun is stalling on a new deal at Upton Park
because he is waiting for a dream move to Liverpool.
The Hammers midfielder has agreed a new contract with the club, but
Liverpool have mounted a bid for his services.
Because of Liverpool's interest, Benayoun's new contract remains unsigned.
The player's agent Ronen Katzav admits that Benayoun's future is still not
decided.
"We are still waiting," Katzav told Skysports. "The deal is still in place

The Merry Go Round Includes Tevez And Gudjonsson For West Ham -
westhamfans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 26 June, 2007 - 14:11.

Eidur Gudjonsson is the latest name to be thrown into the transfer merry go
round situation as it has been made clear to the player that his future is
no longer with Barcelona following the arrival of Thierry Henry from
Arsenal. Without wanting to appear negative, recent reports continue to link
Carlos Tevez with moves to virtually every big club in Europe, and while it
pains me to say it, it is beginning to seem increasingly unlikely that the
Apache will be at the Boleyn next season.. Now it will not be a tragedy if
Carlitos does move on, and despite Mr Magnusson's protestations that the
Argentine hit man will be playing for the Hammers next season it does seem
that the writing is on the wall and that he will be off to Inter or AN
other! Gudjonsson would welcome a return to the Premiership but would
obviously prefer to go to a team that is in Europe, but his stock isn't
exactly high at the moment. Arsenal could be in for the Icelandic, but the
Icelandic theme might just be the key. Having talked a 'good enough game' to
lure Lucas Neill away from Blackburn and getting him to choose West Ham
ahead of Liverpool in the process, Eggert Magnusson might just be able to
swing the deal.. Of course Carlos Tevez might stay at the Boleyn for at
least another season, but it would be imprudent for manager and owner alike
to not have set up some form of contingency plan in case things go belly
up? - Ed

Hammers target in demand - SkySports
By Tom Adams - Created on 26 Jun 2007

Reports in Portugal claim that Lazio could be ready to rival West Ham for
the signature of Nuno Gomes.
The Portuguese international has spent five years at Benfica but the club
and player are believed to be considering a potential exit this summer.
Gomes recently admitted he was ready for an 'English adventure', and any
potential interest from Upton Park could have been strengthened after Darren
Bent's decision to snub The Hammers.
However, Portuguese daily Record reports that Serie A side Lazio are also in
the hunt for the striker who will turn 31 in July.
Gomes spent two years with Fiorentina between 2000 and 2002, before their
bankruptcy, and could be offered a return to Italy with the Rome club.
Benfica are expected to decide on the striker's future during a meeting
later in the week.

Nugent still waits on Everton switch - EatSleepSport
Tue, Jun 26 2007 15:20

Preston striker David Nugent is still keen on a switch to Everton despite
having two other bids accepted for him.Everton boss David Moyes has been
linked with the player for the past 18 months but he has made no move during
the close-season and West Ham and Sunderland now appear to be leading the
race.
However, the England striker is still hoping that a move to Goodison Park
will materialise and a source close to Nugent told The Sun: "He's a lifelong
Blues fan and dreams of playing at Goodison Park.
"No approach has been made yet by boss David Moyes, but David still hopes a
deal can be secured to take him there."

McCarthy Could Arrive At West Ham Through Bizarre Circumstance -
westhamfans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 25 June, 2007 - 21:53.

Now here's a funny thing, Blackburn striker Benny McCarthy who nearly signed
for West Ham only for his club to renege on the deal at the midnight hour
could well end up at the Boleyn as a result of a Premiership merry go
round... Want away midfielder Yossi Benayoun's desire to complete a move to
Liverpool from West Ham seems set to trigger a triumvirate of movement.
According to our sources, Liverpool are willing to include Craig Bellamy in
a part exchange deal to sign Israeli International Benayoun, but the
interesting element in this proposed deal is that Hammers would then
immediately offer Bellamy to Blackburn in exchange for McCarthy with a cash
adjustment.. This report is NOT heresay, we value fans opinions and would
not take the mickey by publishing porkies. Step back a bit and this could be
a good deal for all concerned, West Ham offload a want away player at an
'undisclosed fee' to a club who transfer a player at an ' undisclosed fee'
to a club who part exchange a player at an 'undisclosed fee' to the final
club in the equation. The end result could be that Liverpool get Benayoun,
Blackburn get Bellamy back again and West Ham end up with McCarthy. Of
course there will be a few million pounds give or take in the final
settlement, but this deal could be a 'goer', the only stumbling block could
be Mark Hughes, but then again rumour has it that he is seeking pastures new
from Ewood Park. - Ed

Spector enjoys Gold Cup glory with USA
25/06/2007 11:35
Jonathan Spector enjoyed international success on Sunday as he helped the
USA to victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final.

The Hammers defender played an important part at right-back as the Americans
came from behind to grab a 2-1 victory over Mexico, thanks to goals from
Landon Donovan and Benny Feilhaber.

The game took place in Chicago - Jonathan's home town - at the Soldier Field
stadium in front of a sell-out crowd of 60,000, and their victory ensured
that the USA retained the trophy they won two years ago.

Jonathan will now jet off to Venezuela with his international colleagues to
begin another bid for glory in the Copa America, with their opening game
taking place on Thursday against Argentina.

On your toes, son - KUMB

Filed: Saturday, 23rd June 2007

By: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham United are understood to have withdrawn the offer of a four-year
£10m contract from Yossi Benayoun.
The Hammers, frustrated by Benayoun's dallying and continued links with
Liverpool are said to have retracted the offer after the Israeli made it
clear that he wanted to move on - despite previously having agreed to sign a
new contract.

Liverpool saw an initial derisory bid of £3.5m rejected immediately by
United early in the week, before upping the offer to £4.5m.

The Hammers are said to be looking to engineer a player exchange with former
Newcastle and Blackburn striker Craig Bellamy - plus cash - coming the other
way.

Benayoun - who was signed by Alan Pardew for £2.5m in the summer of 2005 -
started his career in East London well and soon became a popular figure
amongst supporters.

But that support began to dwindle once it became clear that Benayoun's club
were playing second fiddle to his country.

On at least two seperate occasions the midfielder managed to play for Israel
depite declaring himself unfit for West Ham United immediately prior to
those matches - something that didn't go unnoticed by many fans who began to
question his priorities.

Earlier this year he was offered the massive deal which, his agent claimed,
Benayoun would happily sign.

But it became clear that all was not well when he returned from holiday, and
perhaps less of a surprise than it should have been when Liverpool - whose
very own Rick Parry defended Sheffield United in their tainted 'Campaign for
Fairness' last week - made their opening bid.

French battle to keep starlet - Sky Sports

Paris Saint Germain and Monaco are hoping to head off stern interest from
England to land Didier Digard.
PSG are the latest club to join the hunt for the 20-year-old - who is tipped
for big things after producing a series of impressive displays for Le Havre.
Scouts from West Ham, Aston Villa and Reading have also taken a keen
interest in the Under 21 international - but some of France's big hitters
are also keen.
Le Havre, though, have insisted that they are yet to receive a firm offer
for the player - who they value at ?2.5million (£1.6million).

Ticket news
West Ham have received an allocation of 1,200

Terrace Tickets are
£12.00 Adults, £7.00 Seniors, £7.00 Under 16's

Tickets are on general sale

The Ground
The Victoria Road ground is a compact stadium which is very close to the
pitch and can generate an excellent atmosphere. The main Carling stand runs
three quarters the length of one side of the pitch, the last quarter is the
old family stand which is now allocated to away fans. Opposite the Carling
stand is a covered home terrace with uncovered terraces at each end behind
the goals.

The majority of away fans are allocated the Pondfield Terrace which holds
1200 fans. The terrace which is behind the goal is uncovered so we prey the
Great British summer doesn't let us down.

The seats are in what was the old Family stand on the side at the Pondfield
Terrace end of the ground. This stand has a roof.

Lets hear it for the beer
The ground has a social club which in the past has always allowed away fans
in for a small charge. Alternatively the main pub is The Eastbrook, from the
station walk past Victoria Road and then take a left into Dagenham Road and
the pub is on the right.

The Station is the closest to, well the station. It has somewhat of a rough
name but if you want a beer here, turn right out of the station and first
right into Shafter Road and the pub is on the left. A little further afield
is The Bull on the Bull roundabout. Turn right out of the tube station and
continue down to the roundabout where you'll see the pub.

Driving?
From the A13 take the A1306 towards Dagenham and then when you get to
McDonalds swing a left into Ballards Road. Follow this until you come to the
Bull roundabout and take the left into Rainham Road, passing Dagenham East
tube station on the left. Then left into Victoria Road and the ground is at
the bottom of this road.

Can I park here Guv?
There is a fairly large free car park at the ground itself if you get there
early enough. Alternatively there is plenty of street parking close by.

Letting the train take the strain?
The closest station is Dagenham East tube on the District line. Journey time
from Central London is between 30 & 40 minutes.

An alternative route is to take the C2C trains from Fenchurch Street to
Barking, journey time just under 15 minutes and change onto the District
line at Barking for the 10 minute journey to Dagenham East.

The ground is no more then a 10 minute walk from the station. Turn left out
of the station into Rainham road and then left into Victoria road and the
ground is at the bottom of this road.

Flying?
What to Dagenham?

Why Would Sven Want Marlon? - West Ham Till I Die
June 25th, 2007

The rumours about Marlon going to Man City are surely wide of the mark. If
Sven Goran Ericksson becomes the new Man City manager I suspect he will go
for players he once chose for England. Marlon is not a 'Sven' type of
player. Remember, he was on fire the season before last and didn't get so
much as a call-up from Sven.
I know tabloid journalists have space to fill in these barren months, but
let the rumours at least have some semblance of truth!

It's All Gone a Bit Quiet. - West Ham Till I Die
June 24th, 2007

Things seem to have gone rather quiet on the transfer front since the Bent
snub. He's signing for Tottenham tomorrow. I'd love to think we had a chance
of signing Benni McCarthy but I suspect he will be setting his sights at
Stamford Bridge. Eggert Magnusson has made clear we are after a pacy player
and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Defoe move was reactivated. Yossi
seems to be on his way to Liverpool and we are said to have tabled a £10
million bid for Shaun Wright Phillips. On his day he is a world beater but
there are too may days when he is not on his day. Wayne Bridge and Nickhy
Shorey are rumoured to be left back signings. Bridge is beyond his best so I
hope we stick to Shorey for that position. In terms of players leaving,
Marlon seems to be attracting the most interest and it looks as if we will
get around £4 million for him. Reo Coker must be disappointed that a big
club hasn't come in for him and we are surely right to hold out for £8-10
million for him.
We'll see what the coming week has in store.

North End chief waiting on Nugent - Team Talk

Preston chairman Derek Shaw does not believe David Nugent going on holiday
will have an effect on his possible transfer away from Deepdale.
North End have accepted offers from two clubs for the 22-year-old England
international, who has been strongly linked with Sunderland and West Ham,
and he spoke to at least one of them on Friday.
Shaw is now waiting for Nugent's agent to report back on the progress of
negotiations.
He told Preston's official website: "Of the two clubs we gave permission to
speak to David, we believe he met one on Friday.
"We are not sure at this stage if he has met the other club.
"We have been informed that David has now gone on holiday for a week and we
are hoping to get an update from his representative."

Clubs 'poles apart' over Reo-Coker - TeamTalk

Aston Villa are likely to cool their interest in West Ham midfielder Nigel
Reo-Coker as the two clubs are "poles apart" over agreeing a fee.
Villa are happy to pay around £7million for Reo-Coker, who was part of the
England Under-21 side which reached the semi-finals of the European
Championships in Holland.
But sources close to Villa indicate the Hammers want in the region of
£10-£12million for the player who cost £500,000 when he moved to Upton Park
from Wimbledon five years ago.
Reo-Coker is believed to have spoken with the Hammers board in a bid to get
them to drop the asking price to what he feels is a realistic figure.
A Villa source said: "Reo-Coker wants to come to Aston Villa but in terms of
agreeing a price, the two clubs are poles apart."
Villa manager Martin O'Neill returns from holiday next week and is keen to
start rebuilding his squad before players report back for pre-season
training on July 4.
Villarreal striker Diego Forlan is amongst his striking targets as he seeks
to find a partner for John Carew.

Prem rivals to battle for Eidur - TeamTalk

Newcastle, Portsmouth and Manchester United could lock horns in a bid to
sign Eidur Gudjohnsen following Barcelona's capture of Thierry Henry.
The former Chelsea forward had already been linked with a Nou Camp departure
this summer - but the impending arrival of Arsenal striker Henry will almost
certainly spell the end of his Catalan career.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to offload Alan Smith, and could see
Gudjohnsen as the perfect foil for Wayne Rooney in attack.
The Magpies and Pompey have also been linked to the classy Iceland hitman,
and all three clubs would have no problem finding the reported £8million
transfer fee needed to recruit the 28-year-old.
Barca signed Gudjohnsen from Chelsea for £8.2million last summer - but he
failed to hold down a regular first-team place under Frank Rijkaard and will
be behind Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o, Henry and Lionel Messi when the new La
Liga campaign starts.
Sunderland and West Ham have also been keeping tabs on Gudjohnsen's
situation as they seek to bolster their forward options.

Shorey deal blow for Magpies - The Sun
By ANDREW HAIGH
June 25, 2007

NICKY SHOREY is set for a bumper new deal at Reading as Newcastle prepare a
£5million bid.
The England left-back has also been linked with a move to West Ham.
But Royals' boss Steve Coppell reckons Shorey's new big-money contract will
be worth every penny.
Coppell said: "Nicky's success has dictated a new contract. It was discussed
even before England came up.
"He may have only played because Wayne Bridge and Ashley Cole were injured,
but all the England scouts must have given him a good report.
"And he proved himself with his level of performance - I thought he looked
comfortable against one of the best teams in the world."
Stephen Hunt's future at Reading is unsure after Coppell revealed the Royals
will not enter talks about a new deal.
Coppell added: "We can't do 20 contracts at a time. We are doing it on a
rotational basis.
"Some may feel hard done by while others will think they are ahead of the
game.
"But in all my time as a manager I have never known one player offer to give
money back when they are playing crap!"

Guvnor becomes the Don - The Sun (Arrogant Tosser!! DW)
By MIKE ANSTEAD
June 25, 2007

NEW MK Dons boss Paul Ince has compared his move from Macclesfield to
Thierry Henry's switch to Barcelona!
The ex-Manchester United and Liverpool ace has succeeded Martin Allen at the
club formerly known as Wimbledon.
Ince saved Macclesfield from relegation to non-league after joining them in
October.
But he has decided to accept a new challenge as he attempts to climb the
managerial ladder.
Ince said: "This has been a tremendously difficult decision for me. My heart
has said stay with Macclesfield Town but my head has been telling me to go
to MK Dons.
"It feels like the decision Thierry Henry has had to make regarding going to
Barcelona.
"They have significantly more resources for me to work with and as I am
ambitious to make it to the very top, I think I have to go for it.
"I will always remember my time here at Macclesfield - this was where I
started my managerial career - and I hope that our supporters will
understand why I am moving on.
"We came here last October to do a job - to keep Macclesfield in the
Football League - and we did it."
Macc chairman Rob Bickerton added: "Paul is a very special person and a
fantastic manager.
"We tried our best to keep him at the club but we must accept that these
things happen in football."

Hammers remain striker's only exit route - Eat Sleep Sport.com
Mon, Jun 25 2007 11:30
Charlton have confirmed West Ham are still the only club to have matched
their £17million valuation for in-demand striker Darren Bent.Tottenham boss
Martin Jol is still scouring the market for a new striker as Mido looks set
to move on and it was reported over the weekend that they were on the verge
of securing a £16million record swoop for Bent this week. However Addicks
chief executive Peter Varney has hit out to rubbish the claims that a deal
had been struck, saying only the Hammers have matched their full valuation
of the England international but he has already snubbed a move to Upton
Park.
"West Ham matched our valuation," Varney told Sky Sports News.
"As a result of that, we gave them permission to talk to Darren but he
declined to join them.
"No other club has matched our valuation and therefore, despite all the
speculation in the press today, that remains the situation."
It remains to be seen if Bent will opt to stay at the Valley and play
Championship football next season if no other club comes in for him with the
required fee. However he might decide to join West Ham if they are the only
top flight side willing to give him an immediate return to the Premiership
come the end of the summer transfer window.

Hammers Eye up new SWP Bid! - Vitalfootball.co.uk

After yesterday predicting that Manchester City may try and take
Wright-Phillips home, the tabloids today offer a different perspective on
the matter.

It seems that West Ham are prepared to open their biscuit tin and offer
Chelsea £11 million for the winger.

However, the transfer is far from being concluded with Wright-Phillips`
advisors wary of their client signing and then ending up in the Championship
due to the ongoing Tevez row.

Also, it`s being reported that Wright-Phillips has been reported as
suggesting that he doesn`t want to miss out on Champions League action next
season.

It would also appear that Chelsea would prefer a larger bid form the Hammers
to even be prepared to come to the negotiating table.

Meanwhile, we`d like to hope that none of the above impacted upon the
enjoyment Wright-Phillips must have felt at seeing Ricky Hatton emerge
triumphant, once again, on American soil.

Tomorrow, no doubt, we`ll be discussing this saga even more. Never mind, it
keeps life quite interesting!

Sven in link to Hammers ace - Eat Sleep Sport.com
Mon, Jun 25 2007 10:43

West Ham striker Marlon Harewood will reportedly become Sven-Goran
Eriksson's first signing for Manchester City if he takes the job.The former
England coach is set to be announced as the new manager at Eastlands during
this week following ex-Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's takeover of
the club. And, despite rumours of a £50million transfer kitty at his
disposal, the Swede is said to be preparing a swoop on the Hammers for the
27-year-old, who has been told he no longer figures in the plans of boss
Alan Curbishley.
It is thought Eriksson is a huge fan of Harewood, who he sees as a younger
version of former England hitman Emile Heskey, and would like to take him as
part of a little and large partnership possibly involving Newcastle's former
Liverpool and Real Madrid star Michael Owen.
Despite Harewood suffering in West Ham's relegation battle last term and
only finding the net on four occasions, Eriksson would still face a battle
with the likes of Birmingham, Fulham, Aston Villa and Portsmouth to secure
the £4million-rated player's services.

Is this two-cap striker worth £16m? - This Is London
22.06.07

Eggert Magnusson admits his disappointment at being snubbed by Darren Bent
was tempered by messages from West Ham fans suggesting he should be thankful
for a lucky escape. "They appreciate the efforts we made and they are less
disappointed than I thought they might be," claimed the club's chairman
after failing with a £17million bid. The view seems to be that perhaps this
wasn't the best deal we could do at this stage."
As news filtered through yesterday that Bent is on his way to White Hart
Lane from Charlton for just £1m less, the reaction of Spurs fans on their
message boards was similarly muted. Since moving from Ipswich two years ago,
Bent has scored 31 goals in 68 League appearances. Given an extended period
with injury last season, it is an impressive return. But it is the £16m
price tag which is causing consternation among Spurs fans, who already have
Jermain Defoe warming the bench. Why consider selling Defoe for about £10m,
only to spend £6m more on Bent, a player many in north London believe is no
more than the equal of the man he is likely to replace?
Tottenham manager Martin Jol's long pursuit of Bent suggests he is a striker
who can help Spurs into the top four. One man who has no doubts about Bent's
ability is his former manager at Ipswich, Joe Royle. He believes Bent has
the pace and clinical finishing to mature into the next Gary Lineker. "If I
was Darren, I would sit myself down with an armful of Gary Lineker DVDs and
study them," said Royle. "They have very similar attributes. People would
say there wasn't a lot more to Lineker's game than scoring goals, which
always made me smile because scoring goals is what the game is all about. He
was probably the best in the game at getting behind defenders and finishing.
"Lineker's movement and desire and aggression to get on to the ball would be
a great example for Darren to follow. All the attributes are there and
there's no reason why he can't get to the level Lineker did."
The lure of European football has been paramount in Bent's decision to snub
£75,000-a-week at West Ham for £45,000 at Spurs, a refreshing stance in the
money-orientated world of the modern footballer. Royle believes Tottenham
offer the perfect opportunity for Bent to dispel any fears over his mammoth
price tag, while forcing his way back into England manager Steve McClaren's
thinking. "He has to do it on a bigger stage," conceded Royle. "The prices
are amazing but it's all down to supply and demand. He is one of the top
goalscorers in the division. There are still holes in his game and he has to
fill all those holes if he is to be successful at international level. But
he's a young lad learning his job. He is not shy of work or dedication."

In the Ipswich academy, there was always a feeling that he could be special
as he graduated in a crop which included Charlton teammate Darren Ambrose.
HIS arrest and caution by police, three years ago, for firing a ball-bearing
gun at a 12-year-old boy who had been pestering him, has generally been
accepted as a flash of immaturity. Those who know him well describe him as
bubbly and friendly, not wrapped up in the pursuit of money — nor do they
doubt his professionalism. "Every time he has been asked the question he has
scored goals," said Matt Holland, his former Ipswich captain and Charlton
team-mate.
"In the Ipswich youth team he scored 20 a season, the same in the reserves
and the same in the first team. He came to the Premier League and got 20.
His goalscoring record speaks for itself. At the top end of the table he is
likely to get even more chances. He is not afraid of missing. If he misses,
he will score the next time. "He's a top-class player and a topclass
professional. He is always the first one out on the training field and the
last one in. He deserves the success that is coming his way."
Bent has always scored — 54 goals for Ipswich in just over three seasons —
but Charlton faced little competition when they made their move and the
£2.5m fee, plus another £100,000 on appearances, looked a snip when the
goals started to fly in. Ipswich were criticised for letting him go on the
cheap but they insisted on a healthy sell-on clause. They'll cream off 20
per cent of Charlton's profit on the £16m deal. Royle never doubted Ipswich
were set for a healthy return. "Players don't always make the step up. A
goal machine at Championship standard is not guaranteed to score in the
Premiership but Darren's proved he can do it."
Bent scored 22 in his first season at Charlton only to freeze on his England
debut, against Uruguay last year. Sven Goran Eriksson left him out of the
World Cup and although Bent won his second cap under McClaren, he is yet to
establish himself in the squad. He must do that if he is to emulate Lineker
and a move to Spurs could boost his career just as the England legend hit
the headlines with a move from Leicester to Everton a generation ago.

ALAN CURBISHLEY has targeted Wayne Bridge in his search for a new left-back,
writes ANDREW DILLON. West Ham boss Curbs added the £7million-rated Chelsea

attempts to land Nicky Shorey from Reading. Bridge, 26, has overcome two
major hurdles to establish himself in the team at Stamford Bridge. He
battled back after eight months out with a broken ankle and managed to hold
his own against Ashley Cole in the fight for a first-team place. But the
ex-Southampton defender privately admits Cole is Jose Mourinho's

West Ham closing in on Shorey and line up Bellamy - The Independent
By Jason Burt
Published: 23 June 2007

West Ham United are closing in on the signing of Reading's Nicky Shorey and
hope to announce a £6m deal for the left-back next week.

Reading are working hard to keep Shorey and have opened contract talks with
the defender, who made his England debut this month, although they are
interested in taking Hayden Mullins from Upton Park. The midfielder could
become a makeweight in the transfer.

Also leaving West Ham will be Paul Konchesky who is out of favour with
manager Alan Curbishley and has wanted a move since January. At that time
Aston Villa and Manchester City were keen to sign him, while Birmingham City
recently failed with a £2m bid for the defender but are set to increase
their offer.

Shorey has two years left on his present contract at the Madejski Stadium
but has been promised that he can re-negotiate it and become one of the
club's highest-earners. With Reading's strict wage structure that would see
him earn around £20,000 a week, although West Ham are prepared to offer far
more.

Shorey, who has been a virtual ever-present since signing from Leyton Orient
for just £25,000 in 2001, has also interested Newcastle United but it is
thought that West Ham are favourites to secure him should he decide to move
on.

They have been interested in Shorey for some time and initially feared that
they had little chance of landing the player. However, West Ham have grown
increasingly confident that they may get their man, although sources concede
that negotiations are delicately poised.

West Ham are also concentrating on securing Craig Bellamy from Liverpool,
with Yossi Benayoun moving in the opposite direction. Liverpool have
indicated that they are prepared to pay £4.5m for Benayoun after West Ham
withdrew a new contract offer for the Israeli international. Bellamy has
been valued at £12m but it is likely a deal will be brokered involving
Benayoun.

If the midfielder leaves, West Ham will turn their attentions once again to
trying to sign Shaun Wright-Phillips having had a £10m bid for the winger
accepted by Chelsea in January only for him to refuse to move.

West Ham regard Bellamy as the ideal partner for Dean Ashton when the latter
returns from injury, especially as the chances of Carlos Tevez staying at
Upton Park remain slim. Another striker on his way is Marlon Harewood. Four
clubs - Birmingham, Fulham, Portsmouth and Aston Villa - have registered an
interest but, as yet, no club has come close to meeting the £5m valuation
put on him. Birmingham had an offer of £3m rejected.

Fulham are unlikely to pursue Harewood should they, as expected, sign
Diomansy Kamara from West Bromwich Albion for £3m plus the Icelandic striker
Heider Helguson. Fulham's new manager Lawrie Sanchez wants to buy up to
eight players this summer as he overhauls the squad he inherited from Chris
Coleman.

Sanchez is pursuing a trio of players he managed when in charge of Northern
Ireland - the Aston Villa pair of Aaron Hughes and Steven Davis, and the
Leeds United striker David Healy. Hughes is expected to be the first to
arrive at Craven Cottage, with a £1m deal close to being agreed, although
Fulham may baulk at the £5m Villa hope to receive for Davis. Healy is also
keen to reunite with Sanchez, although no deal can take place until the ban
on transfers at Leeds is lifted next month.

Fulham have also shown interest in Mido, who is certain to leave Tottenham
Hotspur once they sign Darren Bent from Charlton Athletic. Charlton are
lining up Jason Roberts as Bent's replacement as the striker wants to leave
Blackburn Rovers and return to London for personal reasons. His availability
may, however, also alert Fulham.

Tevez 'contracts' are threat to West Ham - Daily Mail
Last updated at 00:23am on 23rd June 2007

Sheffield United are closing in on new explosive evidence which threatens to
blow the Carlos Tevez affair wide open again. Sportsmail has learned that
three contracts are in existence which prove that Kia Joorabchian;s MSI
company maintained its thirdparty 'influence' over Tevez — even after West
Ham had been fined £5.5million having pleaded guilty to not holding
exclusive ownership of the Argentina striker.
Lawyers working on behalf of Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe are
pressurising lawyers of Joorabchian to make the documents available to the
Premier League. The three contracts cannot influence the decision of the
arbitration tribunal, which sat earlier this week and is currently
considering if the Premier League acted wrongly by not deducting points. No
new evidence can be heard but the League will be under pressure to act if
these documents are made public and prove West Ham continued to play Tevez
illegally.

£16M Henry off to Barca ..Tevez lined up
By Darren Lewis 23/06/2007

THIERRY HENRY will sign for Barcelona today in a £16million deal - with West
Ham striker Carlos Tevez being targeted by Arsenal to replace him. Henry
will sign a four-year contract worth around £7m a season to join Ronaldinho,
Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp in the most formidable front
line in world football. The Gunners are set to officially confirm the switch
later today. It brings to an end the Frenchman's eight-year stay in London
during which boss Arsene Wenger turned him into a superstar. The striker
was sidelined for much of the recent campaign with injury but in four of the
five campaigns between 2001 and 2006 he was the Arsenal's top scorer. Henry
signed a new four-year contract with the Gunners last year, following
Arsenal's Champions League Final defeat to Barca, insisting he would stay
for the rest of his career. But he fell out with Wenger earlier this season
after being dropped for the north London derby against Tottenham. Wenger
insisted his star man was injured but it is known that Henry was more than
ready to play in the contest. Henry is also known to have been unhappy at
Wenger's insistence in taking on Chelsea and Manchester United's seasoned
campaigners with raw youngsters. And the French striker, Arsenal's all-time
record scorer, admitted the shock departure of vice-chairman David Dein had
been unsettling for everyone at the club. For Barca meanwhile, there was
delight last night at finally capturing the man they have been after for the
last two years.
Wenger will now turn to Tevez, who has become one of the most sought-after
strikers in European football following his success in almost
single-handedly dragging West Ham to Premiership safety from the jaws of
relegation. At 23 Tevez - who plays in next week's Copa America for
Argentina - would be a sound long-term investment for the Gunners who have
registered their interest with the player's advisors. Manchester United and
Inter Milan are also interested in the pint-sized hitman, who recently
admitted he would be more than happy to stay at Upton Park if the right
package could be put together. But Arsenal's need now appears greatest, with
the Gunners desperate to prove to their fans that there is life after
Thierry Henry.

Sir Trevor pays tribute to Under-21 spirit - WHUFC
22/06/2007 12:45

West Ham United legend Sir Trevor Brooking has paid tribute to the spirit
and character of the England Under-21 squad following their heartbreaking
exit from the European Championship semi-finals this week. The Young Lions -
including Upton Park trio Mark Noble, Anton Ferdinand and Nigel Reo-Coker -
were denied a place in the final following an unforgettable penalty
shoot-out defeat against hosts Holland, and the FA's Director of Football
Development was full of praise for their efforts. "The lads worked so hard
to get this far," said Sir Trevor. "Throughout the qualifying campaign, in
the Finals and on the training pitch, they have been committed to doing well
for England. "For the tournament to end in the way it did is heartbreaking
for them, but it is about how these players deal with that and learn from
it. It is all part of their education as England internationals and we hope
that these players will draw from that experience and benefit from it going
forward."
Sir Trevor also had a word of praise for another former Hammer, Stuart
Pearce, coach of the Under-21 side and now favourite to retain the post on a
full-time basis as England look to increase their commitment to developing
the county's young players. "Clearly our priority is looking to the future
and I believe we are committed to making the coach of this side a full-time
position," he said. "The past two weeks here in Holland show the importance
of the role and why it should be permanent. "Stuart Pearce has done
fantastically well in this tournament, the spirit in the camp has been great
and they really showed their character in the face of adversity against the
Dutch. They were seconds away from a place in the final, and Stuart, the
coaches and all the staff can be very proud of what they have achieved."

West Ham's Paintsil eyeing exit - BBC

Ghana defender John Paintsil admits he might have to leave West Ham United
to save his international career. Paintsil joined the Hammers from Hapoel
Tel Aviv last year but has endured a miserable spell at the club, playing
just five times in the Premiership. Now with the 2008 African Cup of Nations
approaching in Ghana, Paintsil says he is weighing up his options. Paintsil
told BBC Sport: "I want to play, it's as simple as that. It is a difficult
situation for me." "I want to be playing for Ghana in every game and fight
for the red, gold and green colours. "But I know that club form is important
so all I can hope is that I can rectify that in the coming season. "My
future is important and I can't end up like this. "I am hoping that
everything works out well even if I don't get the opportunity at West Ham."
Despite enduring a difficult first season in England, Paintsil is impressed
with coach Alan Curbishley's support. "Alan Curbishley talked things over
with me and has assured me the club will take my interest into great
consideration in whatever decision they make about me," Paintsil said. "He
set my mind at ease with that conversation but it is has been a very
difficult situation for me. "The money I earn at West Ham is about a 1,000
times what I had in Israel but that means nothing if I am not playing.
"Sometimes I sit on the bench watching games and wonder why I do well at
training and never get to play. "I just chose to focus and keep training so
that when the chance comes, I won't disgrace myself. "I can't sit down and
complain all day so I rather put more hours into training and make sure when
I get the opportunity I won't blow it."

Portsmouth and Everton, Fernandes' exploits in the U21 European
Championships have attracted the interest of West Ham United. "I don't know
what'll happen," Fernandes said last night. "If I return to Benfica, I'll do
so happily. But we'll just have to wait and see." Meanwhile, DN says
Blackburn Rovers and AZ Alkmaar are ready to move should Benfica drop their
£12 million asking price.

Sven will lead raid on West Ham once he takes over at Eastlands - Daily Mail
Last updated at 13:02pm on 22nd June 2007

Sven-Goran Eriksson is set to become the Premiership's highest paid manager
on an &8million package at Manchester City - and will begin the rebuilding
task at Eastlands by launching a bid for Nigel Reo-Coker. Thai billionaire
Thaksin Shinawatra is closing in on his takeover of City and will give
Eriksson, his first choice in a list of four managers he wants to fill the
hotseat, a &50m transfer kitty to revive the club. Thaksin said: "Sven has a
very good reputation, he is a very capable coach. "He has good connections,
especially with the main players in the UK and Europe and that would help
the club in getting new players to join in the future." Along with Newcastle
striker Michael Owen, West Ham's wantaway skipper Reo-Coker is top of the
Swede's hitlist. The midfielder is seen as a perfect replacement for Joey
Barton, who left City to join Newcastle, and is likely to be available for
around £8m after an impressive series of displays for England Under-21's at
the European Championships in Holland. While the Hammers have been resigned
to losing Reo-Coker for some time, their hopes of hanging on to Carlos Tevez
appear to be diminishing as the forward nears a move to Real Madrid. The
Spanish champions are in talks with the Argentine's representatives over a
£30m move, although Inter Milan are also believed to be interested. Another
likely departure from Upton Park is Yossi Benayoun, who is the subject of
renewed interest from Liverpool. The Reds are set to offer &4.5m - &500,000
short of the Hammers' valuation of the Israeli midfielder - but West Ham
boss Alan Curbishley is hopeful of tempting Craig Bellamy to east London in
return. Liverpool value Bellamy at &12m, but the Hammers hope a
cash-plus-Benayoun offer will seal a deal for the Welshman.

Give George your support: Worthington - Belfast Telegraph
Friday, June 22, 2007
By Graham Luney and Mark McIntosh

Nigel Worthington today pleaded with Northern Ireland fans to welcome George
McCartney back into the international fold now that the West Ham defender
has revealed that he wants to play for his country again. McCartney upset
the Green and White Army when he declared that he would NOT play for the
national side while Lawrie Sanchez was in charge. The former Sunderland
skipper fell out with Sanchez and put his international career on hold ahead
of a match in Malta back in August, 2005. In truth McCartney's decision
didn't hurt Northern Ireland as since then they have gone from strength to
strength and indeed are in with a chance of qualifying for Euro 2008 after
picking up 13 points in their last five matches and currently lie third
behind Sweden and Spain in Group F. Clearly though Worthington wants all
hands on deck for the remaining six matches, starting at home to
Liechtenstein in August - and that definitely includes Premiership players
like McCartney, who is set to add to his 22 caps. "Northern Ireland fans
realise we only have a handful of Premiership players in our squad - we
aren't the biggest country in the world and we don't have the biggest
collection of players," said Worthington. "We can't pick and choose when it
comes to putting a team together and I think it's wonderful we now have a
player of George's ability, nature and quality in the squad "The big thing
he is saying is 'I want to come back and play for my country again' - it's a
massive boost for us. "I hope our fans, who are always brilliant, will
welcome him back and support him like the rest of the players."
Worthington said it was important that McCartney was given time to make the
right decision. "I had a good chat with George and encouraged him to go away
and think about things, talk things over with his family and decide what he
wanted to do," added Worthington. "It was important he chewed things over
and took time to make the right decision. The second time I spoke to him he
said he wanted to play for his country again and it's great news for us, him
and his family. "I never thought for one moment George was definitely going
to come back and play for us but I am absolutely delighted he has made that
decision. "
McCartney - who later admitted that his decision to stop playing for
Northern Ireland was "probably a big mistake" - had several rows with
Sanchez who hinted he "picked" his games. The versatile defender said he
"never feigned an injury" but Sanchez questioned McCartney's commitment to
Northern Ireland.
Worthington added: "What went on between George and Lawrie is nothing to do
with me. But now he's ready to return and be of great benefit to Northern
Ireland again. "He's an experienced Premiership player and if he has a good
pre-season behind him and he is fit come August I would like to think he
will be in the squad for the Liechtenstein game."

Sadler relishing Konchesky battle
Jun 22 2007
By Colin Tattum, Birmingham Mail

MAT Sadler today insisted that he would be ready for the challenge if Paul
Konchesky joined Blues from West Ham United. Sadler has signed a new
three-year contract with the club, knowing full well that his place is under
threat. The left-back said that there was no question about him not
re-committing his future to his home-town team. "It was always the plan,"
the 22-year-old told the Mail. "I am more than happy to stay here. I've seen
other people all leave Birmingham and play for different sides all over the
country. "They've left their family and friends behind but this is where
I've always wanted to be. "I've got the bonus of everyone still being around
me, I'm from Birmingham, I support the club and we could be in for a very
exciting future, which I want to be a part of."
Blues have lodged a £2million bid for Konchesky and are set to step up their
interest. The former England international can also play wide left in
midfield to good effect, which has been overlooked. "It will be a tough
battle to get in next season but I will look forward to it," admitted
Sadler. "What else can I do? Start saying I want first-team football or I
will go elsewhere, or fight for myself and the team I want to play for? "At
the moment there is me and Gary McSheffrey for the left-hand side. I don't
know what the state of play is with Julian Gray but I think it looks like
he's leaving. "We seem pretty set on the right-hand side with Stuart Parnaby
coming in, so I'm sure the gaffer is thinking the left needs looking at. "I
think any Premier League club has to have strong competition for places, at
least two players for each position, and I'm sure it will be no exception
here. I am confident that given a chance I can perform well and contribute."
Sadler was withdrawn from the firing line by boss Steve Bruce during the
Championship run-in. Stephen Kelly moved to left-back and Bruno N'Gotty's
experience was called upon at right-back. Sadler, though, proved himself
more than capable in the top-flight when he returned to the fray after
long-term injury problems in April 2006 as Blues battled relegation. "It was
so disappointing to come out of the Premier League, I've never forgotten how
bad it felt," he said. "I think back to our last home game against
Newcastle, and they had Michael Owen coming off the bench - the sort of top
players you want to be facing every week."

Return of the Mac? - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 21st June 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy has admitted that he is 'flattered' to be
linked with a move to West Ham United. McCarthy almost joined the Hammers in
the August 2005 transfer window but then-club Porto pulled the plug on the
£6m deal at the last minute despite him having agreed personal terms. The
South African striker ended up joining Blackburn for a cut-price £2.5m last
summer but has failed to settle in the North West despite scoring over 20
goals last season. In the last few days McCarthy has once again been linked
with a move to the capital, with both Chelsea and the Hammers touted as
possible suitors.
And the 29-year-old striker says he would be happy to join either. "I am
very flattered to be linked with clubs like Chelsea and West Ham United," he
told SkySports. "Both have great history and both are great teams in the
Premier League. "I've got a contract [at Blackburn] and I am here to serve a
duty to my club that I am contracted at. "But if the opportunity does come
to go and play for a team where you can move up a level, that will always be
my dream. That is always what I strive towards as a player. "If the
opportunity occurs to go and play for a team like that, then I would love
for my management to look at the possibility and look in their heart to make
it possible to make a move."

Real close to signing Tevez - Telegraph
By Charles Carrick
Last Updated: 12:44am BST 22/06/2007

Carlos Tevez has moved a step closer to signing for Real Madrid after his
representative Kia Joorabchian met up with Real officials in Israel to
negotiate a transfer. Spanish newspaper AS reported that a deal could be
imminent after Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic held lengthy talks
with Joorabchian.
Tevez appears certain to leave West Ham, despite becoming a fans' favourite
at Upton Park last season and helping the club to retain their Premiership
status. The Argentinian forward is keen to play in the Champions League.
Madrid are currently on an end of season tour to Israel, but are already
putting plans in place for the next campaign after the departure of David
Beckham. The Spanish champions will face strong competition for Tevez from
Inter Milan but now look the favourites to sign him and a deal could be
reached over the weekend.

PEARCE BACKED BY PLAYERS - Sky
By Alex Dunn - Created on 21 Jun 2007

Nigel Reo-Coker and Liam Rosenior are united in their view that Stuart
Pearce should be appointed England Under 21 manager on a permanent basis.
England's involvement in the European Under 21 Championship came to a halt
on Wednesday, courtesy of a dramatic penalty shoot-out elimination at the
hands of hosts Holland, in a situation that effectively renders Pearce
unemployed. A decision on the role is expected to be made by the Football
Association in the near future and, Pearce has the backing of his captain
Reo-Coker. "I will give him my backing because it has been a great pleasure
to work with Stuart Pearce, Steve Wigley (assistant coach) and the rest. The
lads have enjoyed it," the West Ham midfielder told Sky Sports News. "We
showed great character and great resilience. You have to take a lot of heart
from that performance. "We have learned a lot. We have learned how to play
in the intimidating atmosphere of a European Championships."
Reo-Coker's view was echoed by his team-mate Rosenior, who believes Pearce
is the ideal candidate to nurture England's fledgling talent. "He is a good
manager," added Rosenior. "He has been great with the players and it has
been great for me as a full-back to have him as a manager and we showed some
of his spirit and passion in the match yesterday. "He will be great for some
of the younger players coming through and great for the players going into
the full squad. The team spirit was amazing and it is something we can go
home with and put into our careers. "It is sad to be going home but it would
have been worse had we not done ourselves justice."

ZANETTI BACKS TEVEZ MOVE - Sky
By Amanda Cornforth - Created on 21 Jun 2007

Internazionale captain Javier Zanetti would like to see West Ham striker
Carlos Tevez join him at the club next season. Tevez has been linked with a
move to the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza this summer after the Nerazzurri failed
to land Cagliari forward David Suazo. Zanetti believes his 23-year-old
Argentina team-mate would be a welcome addition to the Italian champion's
squad. "It would be a great signing for us because he is a player that never
gives up," he said. "He would be ideal for Inter, he has great talent and we
really hope he will join us." Tevez, who only joined the Hammers last year
and made 19 Premier League starts for the club, has also been linked with
moves to Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid and is
currently away preparing for the Copa America with the national team.

Rafa ups bid to £4.5m for Yossi - The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON
June 22, 2007

LIVERPOOL will increase their bid for Yossi Benayoun to £4.5million — after
West Ham pulled the plug on his new contract. And Kop striker Craig Bellamy
may yet be used as part of a swap deal. Hammers chairman Eggert Magnusson
has lost patience with Israeli midfielder Benayoun and withdrawn his offer
of a new £13m five-year deal. Anfield manager Rafa Benitez plans to cash in
on the rift — while also offloading misfit Bellamy. Benayoun is being
punished for dithering over signing a new contract after the Reds'
unsuccessful £3m bid last week. He said: "I'm honoured a club like Liverpool
is interested in me. I'm contracted to West Ham so we will have to see what
happens." West Ham insist the player has not submitted a formal transfer
request, although Benayoun's feelings have been made clear that he fancies a
move to Anfield.
Benayoun, 27, is currently on holiday in his homeland and played an hour of
a friendly between Israel and Real Madrid on Tuesday, which the Spanish
champions won 8-0. But West Ham have acted in his absence. They shelved
plans to reward the skilful winger by ripping up the remaining two years of
his contract in return for five more years and a £10,000- a-week pay rise
Magnusson's patience with Premier League players has worn thin following his
dealings with Darren Bent last week. The Charlton striker rejected a £17m
move to West Ham at the last minute after lengthy talks. Benayoun must prove
his commitment before Magnusson is prepared to revive the offer — but the
midfielder is not due back until early next month. The Hammers are also
looking at PSV Eindhoven's Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone, 23.

Real leading race for Tevez - The Sun

REAL MADRID believe they are winning the scramble to sign Carlos Tevez.
Reports in Spain claim Real have struck a verbal agreement with the West Ham
striker's agent and owner Kia Joorabchian. Bernabeu sporting director Pedja
Mijatovic is said to have met Joorabchian in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. But Inter
Milan's strong Argentine contingent are trying to tempt countryman Tevez to
the San Siro. Inter's Argentine skipper Javier Zanetti said: "Carlos is a
great talent and we all hope he joins us." Tevez, 23, can leave Upton Park
for just £100,000 with the rest of the expected £20million fee going to
Joorabchian's MSI group.

Liverpool likely to raise bid for West Ham's Benayoun - The Independent
By Jason Burt
Published: 22 June 2007

Liverpool were last night preparing to raise their bid for Yossi Benayoun to
£4.5m - with West Ham United keen to do a deal if they can persuade Craig
Bellamy to move to Upton Park. The revised offer from Liverpool, who had
initially offered £3m, comes close to the £5m that West Ham hoped to receive
for the Israel international. The likelihood is that Liverpool will
eventually agree to pay especially as Benayoun is desperate to join them.
West Ham have grown frustrated with the 27-year-old midfielder after he
reneged on a verbal agreement to sign a lucrative new contract. That offer
has subsequently been withdrawn but it will be tabled again if Benayoun, who
has two years left on his current deal, pledges his future to West Ham when
he returns from holiday next week. Benayoun has been trailed by the
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez for some time. The Spaniard came close to
making a bid last summer, as did Arsenal, and The Independent revealed
earlier this month that Benitez was now determined to sign Benayoun, who
first came to prominence at Racing Santander before joining West Ham two
years ago for £2.5m.
Benayoun had threatened to hand in a transfer request when he held talks
with West Ham at the end of the season. However, it had appeared that a new
deal - doubling his pay to around £50,000 a week - and reassurances that he
will play more regularly had persuaded him to stay. But once he became aware
of Benitez's renewed interest Benayoun informed West Ham that he wanted more
time before signing.

West Ham were determined to keep the player but after losing out on Darren
Bent, with the Charlton striker changing his mind at the 11th hour on a £18m
move, they have turned their attentions to Bellamy. The Welsh international
can leave Anfield although his £12m valuation - twice what Liverpool paid
Blackburn last summer - has scared off potential bidders.

West Ham will hope that if they offer a reduced fee plus Benayoun for
Bellamy, then it will help secure the deal especially as they will also
increase his wages. They regard Bellamy as an ideal partner for Dean Ashton,
which further indicates that Carlos Tevez is leaving.

Bent signing could see Defoe go - TeamTalk

Tottenham will reportedly listen to offers for striker Jermain Defoe should
they complete a move for Charlton star Darren Bent. The Addicks ace is
believed to favour a switch to White Hart Lane ahead of Liverpool, but his
arrival would leave Spurs with four top strikers pushing for just two places
and Defoe would almost certainly need to leave to bolster his England
prospects. The Sun claims that Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham
are all monitoring the 24-year-old's situation but could be put off by a
price tag in excess of £10million. Defoe joined Spurs for £7million from the
Hammers in February 2004 and has gone on to net more than 50 goals for the
club, despite never holding down a regular first-team place. Dimitar
Berbatov and Robbie Keane are certain to start the new campaign leading the
line for Matin Jol's men, but it remains to be seen whether Defoe will be
prepared to be a bit-part player again even if a move for Bent collapses.

Noble: I'd love to skipper West Ham - Harlow Citizen
By Tess McDermott

MARK Noble is already dreaming of the day when he will captain West Ham. The
tenacious midfielder has proved his worth on the international stage this
month with a series of outstanding performances in England's European U21
Championship campaign in Holland. And when he gets back he is determined to
continue his part in his home town club's succesful development. "I really
think we can go on to be a top-five team in the next few years if we sign
the players who all the talk has been about," he said. "If we do that and,
push on to get some of the best players in the world to Upton Park I'm sure
I'll be there for years to come. "I've captained the youth teams for West
Ham and it would be a dream to captain them in the Premier League and to
take us onto better things. "We've got the chairman, players, manager and
staff to kick on this season and show what we can do."
The 20-year-old spent a loan spell at Ipswich during the first part of the
season, but chose to return to Upton Park and fight for his place. His first
Premier League appearance came in West Ham's rollercoaster 4-3 defeat to
Tottenham, the performance that revitalised their belief leading to a
survival drive of seven wins from nine matches. He said: "We've now got
Scott Parker who is a fantastic player and I'm really looking forward to
playing with him. I'm hoping I come back from Holland fully fit and I'll be
firing for my place in the team."

Neill earns captaincy - David Lewis - The World Game

Lucas Neill will skipper West Ham when the new season kicks-off after
impressing boss Alan Curbishley with his leadership qualities during the
Hammers' miracle escape from the drop. With incumbent Nigel Reo-Coker
seemingly on his way out of the club and new arrival Scott Parker the second
choice for the job, Neill will take the captain's armband when he arrives
back from Asian Cup duty with Australia in early August. Neill, also hot
favourite to skipper his country when Mark Viduka quits international
football at the end of next month, is also the supporters' choice after
standing in with some aplomb for Reo-Coker three times last season. But the
popular defender was taking nothing for granted. "It would be an honour to
skipper a club with such a proud history," he said from Bali, where he is on
holiday before linking up with the Socceroos at their Singapore training
camp. "But I'm certainly not counting my chickens."
"It goes without saying that I enjoy being a leader. "I've only been at West
Ham a short time but I'm feeling right at home now and with the ambition of
the chairman I know we can make massive strides next season." "It's exciting
to be a part of it all."
He has already captained his country on several occasions and led Blackburn
in his final season in Lancashire. A $165,000 a week pillar of strength at
right back since his arrival from Ewood Park in January, Neill was labelled
a mercenary by some after snubbing a lower wage offer from Liverpool to join
the Hammers. But he has become fan's favourite and with his contract due to
expire in 18 months, talks over an extended and upgraded deal could begin as
early as next month.

Zanetti calls for Tevez Thursday 21 June, 2007 - Channel 4

Inter captain Javier Zanetti believes fellow countryman West Ham's Carlos
Tevez would be a great signing for the Nerazzurri. The San Siro outfit
missed out on David Suazo, who will join city rivals Milan after Cagliari
reached an agreement with the club for £10m, and are now planning their next
moves in the market.
"I heard about Suazo, it is a pity, but Tevez would represent an excellent
investment," Zanetti told Radio Radio. "I don't even think it is fair to
speak of him as a consolation for failing to sign the Honduran," added the
Argentine. Inter have been paired with Tevez over the past few months and
reports suggested that President Massimo Moratti had recently started
negotiations with his manager Kia Joorabchian. Tevez, who has made it clear
that he is ready to leave the Premiership, recently admitted that the San
Siro outfit was an interesting option due to the strong Argentine contingent
in Milan. The 23-year-old is also a reported target for Real Madrid,
Sevilla, Liverpool and Manchester United and is contracted to West Ham until
2010. However, his complicated ownership means he is expected to leave the
Hammers this season, although the striker's asking price has been reported
at being anywhere from £4m to £30m. In the meantime, Inter are reportedly
following Barcelona star Samuel Eto'o as well and it is reported that
director Marco Branca flew to Barcelona on Wednesday for talks with the
Cameroon hitman.

Scudamore to feel the heat if Blades win case - The Star Sheffield

FIFA, football's world governing body, would be powerless to prevent the
Premier League overturning Sheffield United's relegation to the Championship
should Bryan Robson's side win the latest round of the Carlos Tevez Affair.'
But FAPL chief executive Richard Scudamore, who has vigorously opposed
United's attempts to overturn the decision not to deduct West Ham points for
breaching transfer regulations when they signed the Argentina international,
would face a battle to persuade the division's 20 member clubs to vote for
expansion should a future tribunal rule in the South Yorkshire team's
favour. United, West Ham and the FAPL are anxiously awaiting the outcome of
Sir Philip Otton's investigation into the original commission's handling of
a dispute which threatens to plunge the English game into chaos.
Although Otton and his cohorts can't recommend that United be reinstated, if
they refer the matter back to the FAPL for further consideration then
Scudamore would find himself under extreme pressure to deliver a compromise
to avoid the possibility that next season's fixtures could be affected. If
that scenario materialises then, assuming United are not minded to accept
financial compensation, relegating West Ham and replacing them with Robson's
men would be the 'cleanest' of solutions. However, that would almost
certainly prompt the Londoners to issue a legal action of their own, leading
some commentators to suggest that the FAPL could temporarily be increased to
21 clubs. Speaking at the 56th FIFA Congress last year, president Sepp
Blatter endorsed a package of proposals which called for leagues across the
world to have no more than 18 clubs in their elite division. Blatter had
hoped the format would be implemented this summer but the FAPL insist that
FIFA are powerless to impose such a change. Speaking at the time, FAPL
spokesman Dan Johnson said: "Sepp Blatter cannot enforce this. "There's only
one group of people who decide the make-up of the Premier League and that's
the 20 clubs. There is no appetite for them as a collective to reduce the
size and FIFA cannot force it on us. "

Euro heartbreak for Under-21 Hammers - WHUFC
20/06/2007 20:56

It was penalty shoot-out heartache once again for Anton Ferdinand and
England on Wednesday night, as the Under-21s suffered defeat against Holland
in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championships.

In a quite amazing encounter at the Abe Lenstra stadium in Heerenveen, the
host nation went through to the final in Gronigen this weekend after winning
13-12 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

And just as it did in last year's FA Cup final, Anton's miss from 12 yards
proved decisive, enabling Dutch defender Zuiverloon to eventually secure a
stunning sudden-death victory and set up a final clash against either Serbia
or Belgium.

That doesn't even begin to tell the full story, though. Ferdinand had
already converted one kick superbly in the first round of penalty kicks,
while his Upton Park club-mate Mark Noble was successful twice, despite
knowing that - had he helped his colleagues progress - he would have missed
the final on Saturday through suspension.

Both Noble and captain Nigel Reo-Coker, who also missed a spot-kick in the
shoot-out, collected their second bookings of the tournament in the second
half, ruling them out of England's next game.

That meant the only Hammer who would have been in with a chance of playing
at the weekend was Ferdinand, whose substitute appearance against Holland
was his first taste of action in the tournament following a groin injury.

Sadly, though, it wasn't to be, as Leroy Lita's first-half strike was ruled
out by a last-minute equaliser from Maceo Rigters, before the Dutch ended
the dreams of Stuart Pearce's brave troops at the end of the marathon
shoot-out.

Shootout misery for Hammers - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 20th June 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

England's under-21s - featuring three Hammers - went out of the European
Championships tonight as the penalty blues struck once again. Host nation
Holland will play in this weekend's final against either Serbia or Belgium
after winning an amazing shootout 13 goals to 12. Anton Ferdinand - just as
in last year's FA Cup Final in Cardiff - was the fall-guy, missing England's
17TH spot kick of the night which gave the Dutch an advantage they gleefully
accepted.
The game itself had finished 1-1 after Leroy Lita's 39th minute opener had
been cancelled out by an 89th minute equaliser from Maceo Rigters. The Dutch
- who had controlled the game for long periods - failed to score a second
goal despite having a shot count of 26-5 in their favour over the 120
minutes and a man advantage due to England running out of substitutes.
Mark Noble scored both of his penalties in the shootout, whilst Nigel
Reo-Coker - who was the last outfield player to take one - missed his only
spot-kick. Anton Ferdinand scored his first with some aplomb - but saw his
second effort cannon off the bar. Had England progressed neither Noble nor
Reo-Coker would have played in the final as both picked up their second
bookings of the tournament, which automatically ruled them out of the next
match.

Bellamy is a Troublemaker says Shearer - West Ham Till I Die
June 20th, 2007

I've expressed great scepticism about West Ham signing Craig Bellamy in
several recent posts. Alan Shearer has now revealed exactly what kind of a
shit-stirring troublemaker he can be. This is what Mr Shearer had to say
today, warning Sam Allardyce not take him back to St James's Park…..

Has no-one learned their lesson about signing him? If only Rafa Benitez had
rung me I would have told him exactly what he was like. I was having a few
days away in France with my former Newcastle team-mates Gary Speed and Steve
Harper and the wives and I picked up the newspaper. I was having a fantastic
day. But when I read Bellamy for Newcastle I thought I would definitely have
to have another drink. I had several. I hope there's nothing in it.

Tyrone tops Billy's summer wish-list - TeamTalk

Derby boss Billy Davies wants to make West Ham defender Tyrone Mears his
first summer capture - and will offer £1million for him. Mears is not in
Hammers boss Alan Curbishley's long-term plans at Upton Park - so Davies is
confident of getting his man. The 24-year-old joined the Irons from Preston
in July 2006 for £1million - but has failed to nail down a first-team place
in the East End and is now behind Lucas Neill in the pecking order. The Rams
recruited Mears on loan in January's transfer window and he was a regular
fixture in the side which eventually sealed promotion to the Premier League
with a 1-0 win over West Brom in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
Davies has vowed to assemble a squad "made up mostly of British players" at
Pride Park, and wants Mears to be his first permanent capture of the summer.

Hammers enter race to sign Benni - TeamTalk

West Ham are believed to have entered the race to sign Blackburn striker
Benni McCarthy, despite Rovers insisting he is not for sale. The South
Africa international bagged 18 goals in the Premier League last season,
immediately prompting a failed bid from Chelsea for the 29-year-old.
Blackburn chief Mark Hughes has insisted throughout that McCarthy will be
lining up in a Rovers shirt again at the start of next season, but the
Hammers have money to burn courtesy of owner Eggert Magnusson. The former
Porto frontman moved to Ewood Park for a bargain £2.5million last summer but
is probably now valued at four times that amount, although whether that will
be enough for Hughes' head to turn remains to be seen.

Warner accused of failing to pay T&T bonuses
Paul Kelso
Thursday June 21, 2007
The Guardian

Jack Warner, the Fifa vice-president, is again at the centre of controversy
over Trinidad & Tobago's World Cup campaign, this time because of a players'
revolt over unpaid bonuses. The former West Ham United goalkeeper Shaka
Hislop is leading the Soca Warriors in legal action against the T&T Football
Federation, for which Warner is a special adviser, alleging that promised
bonuses were not paid.

Warner has effectively blacklisted 16 players, including Hislop, Stern John
and Chris Birchall, and accused them of being "consumed by greed" after they
demanded that a pre-tournament contract to share 50% of World Cup commercial
revenues should be honoured.

The federation did deals with Adidas, Ebay, British Gas and KFC before the
tournament, with some estimates putting the total value at more than $11.5m
(£5.8m). The players claim they have been offered only £400 each, with items
including travelling expenses and hotel fees, all of which were covered by
Fifa, deducted.
In a letter to Warner, Hislop accuses him of a "slanderous attack" and makes
it clear that he will be called to give evidence when proceedings begin in
the next week. Last year Fifa's ethics commission ruled that Warner had
abused his position by making a £500,000 profit on marked-up World Cup
tickets sold through his family travel company, but he hung on to his
influential Fifa post.

Derby close to deal for West Ham's Mears

Derby boss Billy Davies is confident of wrapping up a permanent deal for
West Ham fullback Tyrone Mears. Mears is not in Hammers boss Alan

Preston wait for offers for Sunderland, West Ham target Nugent
tribalfooball.com - June 20, 2007

Preston boss Paul Simpson is bracing for a flood of offers for his England
U21 star David Nugent. The £7million-rated hitman will consider his future
next week after starring at the European Under-21s Championship in Holland.
Sunderland, West Ham, Middlesbrough and Everton are all ready to make a bid
for Nugent, 22. Simpson said: "There have been enquiries from Premier
League clubs. "I don't want him to go, I want him to stay a Preston player.
"But, if I'm honest, I think things will start happening as soon as the
Under-21s are back. "I expect it to go crazy again but he doesn't want to
think about his future until the tournament is out of the way."
