Statement from Eggert Magnusson - WHUFC
14/06/2007 16:27

Chairman Eggert Magnusson has reiterated West Ham United's ambition to
strengthen the playing squad during the close season, but insists that some
of the media speculation surrounding the Club's financial dealings is
completely untrue. In an exclusive statement on whufc.com, Mr Magnusson
says: "I am delighted to report that we are making progress in our plans to
strengthen the squad over the summer period. "We are hopeful of making an
exciting announcement soon and Alan Curbishley and the Board will continue
to work to get the right balance in the team for next season. "I know we are
moving in the right direction as a Club and I also know the fans share our
ambitions for the future. "On a personal level I am, at times, frustrated by
some of the stories which appear in the media suggesting certain salary
levels for our players - many of which are simply factually wrong. "It is
not right to comment on every story or to use confidential information in
public but I can say the truth is often different to the reports. "The
bottom line is that this is an ambitious Club with a very sound financial
base and as new owners we are determined to move forward. As we do that we
can expect criticism from others but the most important thing is delivering
the true potential of this great Club."

Man City to visit on opening day - WHUFC
14/06/2007 10:00

West Ham United have been handed a home fixture against Manchester City on
the opening weekend of the 2007-08 Barclays Premier League season.
Hammers will take on City - current managerless and facing an impending
takeover - at Upton Park in the first game of the new campaign, which kicks
off on Saturday, August 11. Our first away match was originally scheduled
to be a trip to Liverpool on Wednesday, August 15. However, with the Reds
involved in Champions League qualifiers that week, the fixture will
definitely be rearranged for another date. That means our first away game of
the season will be a visit to newly-promoted Birmingham City on Saturday,
August 18, before Hammers return to Upton Park a week later for our second
home game of the season, against Wigan Athletic. Other notable fixtures to
look out for before Christmas are home clashes against Arsenal on September
29 and Tottenham Hotspur on November 24, while we face away trips to Chelsea
on December 1 and Middlesbrough just three days before Christmas. Reading
are the visitors to Upton Park on Boxing Day, with Manchester United in town
three days later, before Alan Curbishley's men face a trip to Arsenal's
Emirates Stadium on New Year's Day.
For the second year running, our final away game of the season is at
Manchester United, but the campaign overall ends at Upton Park, with Aston
Villa the visitors on May 11. Please note that ALL fixtures are still
subject to change. Details of our live Sky TV and Setanta Sports coverage
will appear here as soon as they are confirmed.

Galey's View - WHUFC

The signing of Scott Parker is a real coup for Alan and the Club. Like Lucas
Neill, he is another player who leads from the front and you can't have
enough of those in the Premiership. I've seen a lot of Scott's career as I
used to cover Charlton for Capital Gold Radio. His partnership with Claus
Jensen in the middle of the Addicks' midfield was one of the best, yet most
underrated, pairings around. He moved to Chelsea and never really got the
chances that he deserved. He then transferred to Newcastle, where I know the
Geordie fans loved his all-out commitment. Now his move back down south will
hopefully give him the platform for getting back into the England squad.
Talking only about Scott's commitment would be undermining his skill factor.
At his best he's a good passer of the ball and moves quickly across the
ground when he's in possession. In finishing, the West Ham fans love a
trier. Scott certainly is that and they will take him to their hearts.

Liverpool admit Benayoun approach - BBC

Liverpool have revealed they are interested in bringing West Ham midfielder
Yossi Benayoun to Anfield. The Israel international, 27, has verbally agreed
to a new five-year deal at Upton Park, but has delayed committing his future
in print. Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said: "I can confirm we've
made an approach for Benayoun, but the figures quoted are completely wrong.
"Other than that we don't want to say any more." Some reports suggested
Liverpool had already offered £1m for the Israel captain, while others
understood the figure to be £3m. West Ham are believed to have rejected the
bid as they aim to tie their midfielder, who joined from Racing Santander in
2005 for £2.5m, to a £50,000-a-week deal. Last month, it was widely reported
that Benayoun had signed the new contract although his agent Ronen Katzav
later revealed his player had only agreed in principle.

Benayoun bid confirmed - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 14th June 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Liverpool Chief Executive Rick Parry has confirmed that his club have made
an official approach for Yossi Benayoun. Parry, speaking in reply to
newspaper stories linking the Israeli midfielder with a move to Anfield,
confirmed that Liverpool had lodged a bid - whilst adding that reports of a
figure of £3m are wide of the mark. "I can confirm we have made an approach
for Yossi Benayoun," said Parry, "but the figures quoted are completely
wrong. "Other than that we don't want to say any more." The Hammers have
told Liverpool that Benayoun - who still has two years remaining of his
existing contract - is not for sale.
Benayoun - who reneged on an agreement to sign a new five-year-deal with
United - is thought to be keen to move to Anfield.

Reds move for Benayoun - Sky
By Mark Buckingham - Created on 14 Jun 2007

Liverpool have made an approach for West Ham United midfielder Yossi
Benayoun. Reports have claimed that The Reds have offered £1million for the
Israel international, which has been dismissed as 'insulting' by The
Hammers. But, according to Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry, that price
is some way off the figure discussed between the clubs. Parry confirmed the
club's interest in Benayoun, but was unable to expand on whether a future
bid would be successful.
"I can confirm we have made an approach for Yossi Benayoun, but the figures
quoted are completely wrong," Parry told the Liverpool Echo. "Other than
that we don't want to say any more." Benayoun's future at Upton Park is
currently unclear as he has yet to sign a new five-year contract with the
club. The deal had been agreed with West Ham late last month, but the lack
of a signature has prompted an enquiry from Liverpool.

Pearce won't risk Ferdinand - Sky
By Mark Buckingham - Created on 14 Jun 2007

England Under 21 coach Stuart Pearce is reluctant to gamble on the fitness
of Anton Ferdinand. The West Ham United defender sat out England's opening
game of the European Under 21 Championship in Holland with a groin injury.
Having missed the 0-0 draw with Czech Republic, it was thought Ferdinand may
be fit to return for Thursday's game with pre-tournament favourites Italy,
live on Sky Sports 1. But there are now suggestions the centre-half could
sit out the remainder of the competition, with Pearce wary about taking any
risks. "We felt as though he's not been fit to train and join in the group,"
Pearce told Sky Sports News. "At a push, he might well have been, but we're
not prepared to gamble on that at the moment. "The players in his position
are fighting for a place in that team as well and it wouldn't probably be
fair on them either." Gary Cahill and Nedum Onuoha started at centre-half
against the Czechs, but Steven Taylor is back from suspension to face Italy
in Arnhem.

Manchester City will kick-off the new Premier League campaign with an away
trip to West Ham on August 11. Premiership newcomers Derby will provide the
opposition for the first home game on August 15. And fans won't have to wait
long for the first Manchester derby with United, the reigning champions,
visiting the City of Manchester Stadium on Saturday August 18. The return
fixture at Old Trafford is scheduled for Saturday February 9 and they end
the season with a home tie against Newcastle.

Hating The Media - West Ham Online
Alex V - Thu Jun 14 2007

I hate the media, but particularly I hate the new media age. When the WHO
started there were basically 2 or 3 places to look online for news on West
Ham - the main ones being the official site and here. It worked nicely I
thought - they would post the official line, and we would question it on
here. Nowadays every tabloid rumour is repeated a countless number of times
over the net, and every interview is mined for quotes to be taken out of
context. It's rubbish. And actually sometimes I wonder now if the WHO has
become part of the problem - we feed these rumours too often rather than
questioning them.

With the greatest of respect, I think that West Ham fans are too easily
swayed under pressure from the media. The Ince situation was over a picture
taken for a paper, Lampard was lambasted for quotes, Reo-Coker's reputation
destroyed by media coverage of a death threat. Regular readers of my stuff
will know that my regular hobby-horse is how Rio Ferdinand's reputation was
untarnished despite him basically shafting West Ham worse than any player
since, simply because he was careful what he said in the press.

I think Reo-Coker is the latest recipient of death by innuendo. Anyone from
the outside looking in would wonder how on Earth our fans would be wanting a
player, captain of England under-21s, probably the hottest property in the
country at his age, to be leaving the club. All based on some dubious
judgements over his character based on a bit of idle gossip late last year -
how pathetic. Whether or not Reo-Coker is a nice person off the field is
absolutely irrelevant - I want him on the field at West Ham delivering on
his potential as a player, a leader, a winner. I don't care how he treats
the tea-ladies at the training ground, no offence.

Personally I feel that in many ways we as supporters are a bit naively out
of touch with the way that modern football has gone. We expect to identify
and genuinely 'like' the players at our club, but realistically I just can't
imagine how many overpaid, arrogant, self-obsessed primadonnas I could
really endure the company of. That Reo-Coker may be one of the louder of
that breed I accept, but is that really a reason to drive him out of the
club? Aren't they all like that, except some of them can't be bothered to
open their mouth as often as him? I remember talking to a sports journalist
who admitted that they can't stand the company of any of the modern
footballers, and hark back to 'better' days. Well those days are well and
truly gone, but if you look at the general standard of football played in
this country these days we can't complain too much. Anyway Reo-Coker is all
but gone, so it's a moot point.

In terms of the Tevez situation, I am fairly disgusted with the media in
general. What annoys me most is that the coverage has made West Ham fans, it
seems to me, feel fortunate and somehow 'let off' because of some ruling
over a technicality, as if we had something to be ashamed of. I would single
out the BBC for its continuing repetition of Sheffield United's continual
bleatings about foul play, without ever once considering the actual facts of
the case. I don't mind the case being looked at, and questions being raised,
but I do mind my club being character assassinated for no reason other than
headline news being "a bit thin on the ground" at this time of year.

There are encouraging signs coming out of the club as regards possible
action once the legal side of the matter is finally put to bed. I think our
dignified silence throughout the affair is to be applauded. But once it's
done and dusted I would suggest the following...

- A blanket ban on interviews with BBC personnel in response to the
corporations undignified pursuit of the club and insinuation that we are
inherently evil. Contractual obligation interviews post-match to be
performed by the kit-man. Lifetime ban for Hansen, Lineker and Lawrenson for
their sniggering superiority on the issue.

"Sports Journalist of the year" Paul Hayward to get a lifetime ban along
with his fellow Mail journalists for his utterly pathetic one-sided
bleatings about Sheffield United fans in tears, comparing us to the devil,
with our "mighty stench". Hayward your piece on the final day of the season
was absolutely the most nauseating piece of journalism I've ever read.
Oliver Holt and Harry Harris - similar bans for these slimeballs.

Patrick Barclay of the Telegraph to get a ban and also face possible legal
action over his piece in the last week of the season encouraging Wigan and
Sheffield United to purposefully play out a goal-less draw on the last day
to condemn West Ham to relegation. So disappointing from a journalist I used
to respect.

Perhaps to offer a £1 million "prize" to the first newspaper journalist who
writes a balanced piece on the issue that actually considers the judgement
made and the facts around the case. Rather like the money offered for proof
of genuine supernatural powers, this money is unlikely to ever be claimed.

My faith in the media to have any useful contribution to make on any
important issue in football or elsewhere has been totally eroded over many
years of following their work closely. Their interest is only in selling
papers, in creating sensation – the character assassination of West Ham is
the only way to keep the story running, create headline news when there is
little. And of course they wouldn't dare pursue the same line with Man Utd
or Chelsea, as indeed they could because in my opinion both have been guilty
of far worse transgressions than the Tevez one. The bottom line is that what
you read has nothing to do with the truth, which is too complicated for
headline soundbites in this case. For a similar dose of irrelevant claptrap
try looking up the columnists on Bob Woolmer.

CURBS IN FOR £16M BENT - DailY Express
Thursday June 14,2007
By Tony Banks

DARREN BENT will arrive at West Ham today for talks over a £16million switch
from Charlton as the Upton Park club once again break the bank in their bid
to join the elite. Manager Alan Curbishley was last night flying back from a
short summer break in Alicante to clinch a deal he has been trying to close
for weeks.
His club have beaten off rivals Tottenham for the capture of Bent by
offering the striker a staggering £75,000-a-week contract over four years.
Spurs, who thought they had lured Bent after more than a year of chasing,
only offered the speedy forward £35,000 and look to have been priced out.
Hammers chairman Eggert Magnusson gave the go-ahead and his club upped their
offer by £10,000 a week yesterday – in the face of Liverpool entering the
chase for the former Ipswich striker. The offer comes just 10 days after
Curbishley spent £7m on Newcastle's England midfielder Scott Parker in a
£65,000-a-week deal.
Bent's departure from relegated Charlton was always going to be a formality.
The striker, who had netted 37 goals in the past two seasons, is one of the
hottest scoring properties in England. However, Curbishley looks likely to
lose last season's cult hero Carlos Tevez this summer, with both Manchester
United and Inter Milan chasing the striker. So a new goalscorer became
thepriority even though West Ham insist they have not given up hope of
keeping the Argentinian. But with £7m Dean Ashton expected to be fit for the
start of the campaign after missing the whole of last season with a broken
foot, Curbishley will be hopeful he can steer his rapidly reshaped squad to
a European place. Curbishley had targeted Liverpool's Craig Bellamy and
Manchester United's Norwegian veteran Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, among others.
But the younger Bent, who seems on the verge of permanent England
recognition, looks a far better bet.

Transfer talk: West Ham lead Bent chase - the Times
Aidan Magee

WEST HAM manager Alan Curbishley is reported to be leading the chase to sign
Charlton striker Darren Bent for a second time. The Upton Park club are
reported to be close to clinching a deal for the England international, 23,
after offering him a five-year deal worth £75,000-a-week. Tottenham have
registered their interest in Bent, but Hammers chairman Eggert Magnisson is
confident he has pulled off another transfer coup. Curbishley has offered
midfielder Hayden Mullins to Charlton in an effort to clinch the move. Bent,
who was signed by Curbishley for Charlton two years ago, was reported to be
returning from holiday on Thursday to undergo a medical and complete a move
to West Ham. The Hammers may look to partly finance the bid by selling
midfielder Yossi Benayoun to Liverpool, who are thought to have bid around
£1million, with a further £1.5m to be paid after 12 months. Spurs manager
Martin Jol has offered striker Jermain Defoe a new three-year contract, but
will tell the England striker to leave White Hart Lane if he does not sign
it.

Hammers rage at Rafa's £1m Benayoun offer - This Is London
14.06.07

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has enraged West Ham by offering an 'insulting'
£1m for Yossi Benayoun. The 27-year-old Hammers midfielder has stalled on a
new five-year contract and admits he would like to move to Anfield. But
Liverpool's cheeky attempt to get him on the cheap has been greeted with a
brick wall of silence from West Ham who are now even more determined not to
let him go. Reports in the Daily Mirror suggest the Reds were ready to offer
£1m now and another £1m in a year's time. This has been rejected as
'insulting' by Hammers chairman Eggert Magnusson but has clearly unsettled
Benayoun who was due to sign an imporved £50,000 a week deal. Israel
international Benayoun was offered the new contract three weeks ago then
claimed he would be 'delighted' to stay with the 'best supporters in
England.' Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said today: "I can confirm we
have made an approach for Yossi Benayoun, but the figures quoted are
completely wrong. "Other than that we don't want to say any more."

West Ham Look To Champions League Instead Of Championship - West Ham
Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 14 June, 2007 - 11:15.

With the fixture list just released and tremendous transfer speculation
surrounding the club, West Ham fans around the globe will be licking their
lips in anticipation instead of gnawing their knuckles in apprehension.
Having only survived relegation on the last day of the season it might seem
strange to be talking about trying to dislodge one of the top four clubs
that occupy the elite champions league places and all the commensurate
accompanying benefits.. The imminent arrival of Darren Bent, yet to be
confirmed, signals chairman Eggert Magnusson's intent to turbo charge the
club to stellar heights. The press have been quick to brand West Ham as
'cash rich' and that the club are guilty of de-stabilising the transfer
market! Well blow me down, East End Clubs aren't supposed to have the
temerity to compete with the big boys are they? Well actually they are,
Manchester United were in the old second division once, Liverpool once
seemed unassailable at the top before being overtaken and Chelsea were
bankrupt before Abramovich rescued them. Arsenal are in financial free fall
following the massive investment in the Emirates Stadium that has
overstretched their resources, which leaves West Ham, Tottenham, Everton and
probably a revived Newcastle pushing for that all important fourth spot.
Although Alan Curbishley has stated that a top ten finish is his target he
is not fooling anyone, nothing less than a European slot will satisfy fans
and owners alike who feel that the team seriously underperformed prior to
the last ten games of the season. With a team crammed full of Internationals
Hammers should be aiming for the Champions league, it is the first time in
the club's history since finishing third in 1986 where there is a genuine
opportunity of joining football's top flight. It is rather amusing to hear
clubs crying foul over Hammers spending power, me thinks that there are a
lots of kettles calling pots black or vice versa. - Ed

Reds confirm bid for Israel star Benayoun
Jun 14 2007
by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have launched a move for talented West Ham midfielder Yossi
Benayoun. But the Reds today dismissed reports that their £1m offer has
'enraged West Ham' and is 'insulting'. "I can confirm we have made an
approach for Yossi Benayoun, but the figures quoted are completely wrong,"
said Reds chief executive Rick Parry. "Other than that we don't want to say
any more." Benayon was on the verge of signing a new £50,000 a week deal at
Upton Park this week, but in the light of Liverpool's interest has decided
not to put pen to paper. West Ham are reported to be unhappy with what they
see as a bid designed to deliberately unsettle the Israeli playmaker. If The
Hammers step up their interest in Craig Bellamy, a cash plus player exchange
deal could be engineered.

City for starters as it's home again for Hammers - Newham Recorder
14 June 2007

FOR THE third season running, West Ham United have been given a home match
on the opening day of the Premiership season in August, writes DAVE EVANS.
After 3-1 victories over both Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic on the
first day in the last two seasons, this time it will be Manchester City who
come to Upton Park for a game that manager Alan Curbishley could probably
not have hand picked any better. City, who won 1-0 at the Boleyn last
season, have been hit by all sorts of problems since the end of the last
campaign. They are currently managerless; all sorts of European bosses have
turned down the chance to go to Eastlands, while their prospective buyer has
seen his assets frozen. Looking at West Ham's first few games, they
certainly do not look too taxing, except of course for the trip to Anfield
in the first week of the season, a ground where they have not won a league
game since 1963!
Trips to Birmingham, Reading and Newcastle come before the end of September
as do home games against Wigan, Middlesbrough and Arsenal, so optimistic
West Ham fans will look at those fixtures and think that their team may well
be in a good position after two months of the season. Tottenham Hotspur come
to Upton Park on November 24, with the Hammers trip to Chelsea coming a week
later, while Boxing Day sees West Ham entertain Reading, another team that
won at the Boleyn last season. West Ham will look for a repeat of their
heroics at the Emirates Stadium when they take on Arsenal on New Year's Day,
though not a repeat of what happened last new year's day when they were
destroyed by Reading at the Madejski. Tottenham entertain West Ham on March
8, a week after Chelsea have come to Upton Park, while Manchester United is
again the final away game of the season for the Hammers, this time on May 3
as West Ham finish the campaign with a home match against Aston Villa.
The Liverpool home game is again a midweek match, on January 29, while the
home game against champions Manchester United is scheduled for December 29,
two days before the trip to Arsenal. The matches are subject to change for
SKY TV purposes, who will announce their first batch of live matches in the
next couple of days, but West Ham fans must just be glad that they are
taking on the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United and not
Burnley, Barnsley and Scunthorpe United!

A Bent deal - KUMB
Filed: Thursday, 14th June 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham United are set to pay an astonishing £16m for Charlton striker
Darren Bent. It was confirmed late on Tuesday afternoon that the two clubs
had thrashed out a record-breaking deal, after Tottenham - Bent's preferred
destination - had pulled out of the race to sign the former Ipswich striker
earlier in the day. United's new-found financial clout proved too much for
Spurs - who refused to bid higher than £12m - to compete with and bar the
formalities of a medical, Bent is expected to be announced as a West Ham
player later today. Alan Curbishley is thought to be flying back to England
in order to meet Bent after cutting short a family holiday. As part of the
deal West Ham are expected to let Hayden Mullins rejoin his former boss Alan
Pardew at the Valley, making the deal worth around £18m in all given
Mullins' £2m valuation. Should the deal go ahead as expected Alan Curbishley
will have spent some £42.5m on new players this year - whilst yet more
signings are set to follow.

Yossi backtracks - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 13th June 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Yossi Benayoun is hoping that West Ham United will allow him to join
Liverpool. The Israeli midfielder - who had previously agreed to sign a new
five-year-deal with the Hammers - is reportedly upset at West Ham's decision
to reject a paltry bid of £3m from Liverpool for his services. And according
to his agent Ronen Katzav the 27-year-old midfielder is still hopeful that
he will be allowed to leave Upton Park, having reneged on his decision to
sign a new contract with the Hammers. "We will sit tomorrow with West Ham
and see where we are going to go," said Katsav after United told Liverpool
that Benayoun was not for sale. "It is an unpleasant situation after we
agreed terms but we will fight it. "Still, if West Ham decide not to sell
him he is theirs. But we will try to talk to them and convince them to let
Yossi go."

Hammers net £17m Bent - The Sun
By CHARLIE WYETT and ANDREW DILLON
June 14, 2007

WEST HAM are poised to tie up a club-record £17million deal for Darren Bent
today. Charlton striker Bent is yet to make up his mind — but has promised
an answer within the next 24 hours. A surprise breakthrough was made
yesterday after the Addicks agreed to drop their asking price and West Ham
offered the player improved wages. Charlton initially demanded £18m — but
the two clubs compromised. West Ham will pay £16m in cash with midfielder
Hayden Mullins going the other way as part of the deal. Spurs were ready to
pay Bent £35,000 a week with Liverpool also interested. But West Ham beat
off the competition by bumping up their wage offer from £60,000 to £75,000 a
week. It means the whole deal will cost £36.5m with Bent due to earn £19.5m
over five years.
Bent, 23, will become the highest-paid player at Upton Park as he is
reunited with boss Alan Curbishley. It was Curbishley, when in charge of
Charlton, who paid Ipswich just £2.6m for the player two years ago. But the
Tractor Boys are also celebrating as they pocket almost £3m from a sell-on
clause guaranteeing them 20 per cent of any profit. Bent will join forces
with fellow England striker Dean Ashton to spearhead West Ham's attack in
the Premiership next season.
Bent becomes Curbishley's second major signing of the summer following the
£7m capture of Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker. But the Bent deal throws
more doubt over the future of Argentinian hitman Carlos Tevez. West Ham
insist the controversial star is committed to the club. But Italian champs
Inter Milan are confident of beating off Manchester United in their bid to
land Tevez, 23. Inter president Massimo Moratti has already opened talks
with Tevez's adviser and owner Kia Joorabchian. Moratti said: "It's true,
Tevez is a player we like a great deal. "He has true quality and great
character. He is just what Inter need."
Even though Tevez is contracted to the Hammers until 2010, a clause in his
agreement allows him to leave for just £100,000. Then it would be down to
the buyers to agree a compensation fee with Joorabchian's sports company
MSI. Inter are ready to offer up to £20m for outright ownership of Tevez,
who is lined up to replace the out-of- favour Adriano at the San Siro. And
that gives them the edge over Manchester United, who want to take Tevez on
loan for a season before signing a permanent deal next year. Tevez is still
not sure where his future lies — but admits he will never forget Hammers
fans. He said: "I'll always remember our final game of the season at Old
Trafford when our fans were singing 'Argentina, Argentina'. "For someone
like me, who had an uncle who fought for the Malvinas and knows the feeling
that existed after that war, it was incredible to hear that chant. "I was
amazed I could be an idol for English fans and it made a huge impression on
me."
The Hammers are also determined to hang on to midfielder Yossi Benayoun
after rejecting a £3m Liverpool bid. Upton Park chairman Eggert Magnusson
is now aiming to tie down the Israeli star to a five-year deal. Benayoun,
27, has two years left on his current £40,000-a-week contract. But Magnusson
is ready with a three-year extension and a £10,000-a- week rise to secure
his services. Liverpool made the bid on Tuesday in an attempt to derail
contract talks.

Money-mad Hammers pay £17m for Bent - This Is London
14.06.07

West Ham swooped for Darren Bent last night in a £17million deal guaranteed
to send shockwaves through the transfer market. The Hammers have agreed to
pay £16m for Charlton's England striker with midfielder Hayden Mullins,
rated at £1m, heading to The Valley as part of the package. Bent, 23, has
agreed personal terms on a five-year contract worth £75,000 a week and will
fly home from holiday in the Caribbean for a medical. The transfer should be
completed by the weekend to confirm another coup for Alan Curbishley and his
big-spending West Ham board. In the end Tottenham, who bid £18m for Bent in
January and led the chase for so long, were simply overpowered by the
financial clout of the Hammers under Eggert Magnusson and his Icelandic
moneymen.
Even Liverpool, who made a discreet inquiry last weekend, baulked at
Charlton's £18m asking price for a player who has made just two appearances
for England in friendlies against Uruguay and Greece. Spurs had been
confident of signing Bent, who was keen to play in Europe to boost his
England prospects.
Manager Martin Jol may have been able to point to a young and improving team
which has finished fifth in the Premiership for the last two seasons but
that wasn't enough. Spurs refused to go higher than £12m this summer and pay
wages that would shatter their structure. The top earners at Spurs take home
£50,000 a week and their best offer to Bent was £35,000. Another trump card
for Curbishley was the fact that Charlton boss Alan Pardew was keen to take
Mullins to The Valley from his former club. Pardew was also keen on West
Ham's Marlon Harewood but Birmingham and Fulham are also interested in the
striker. Relegated Charlton reached the stage where they were anxious to
move Bent out and re-invest the money in new players to invigorate the club
and challenge for a swift return back to the Premier League. The Bent deal
is sure to be greeted with a cheer in Ipswich who will receive a £2.88m
sell-on fee as part of the agreement which took the striker to The Valley
for £2.6m. Charlton and Wigan were the only teams interested in Bent when
Ipswich wanted to sell him two years ago. Former Charlton boss Curbishley
signed him and Bent responded by scoring 31 Premiership goals in two seasons
and breaking into the England team. The pair will now be reunited at Upton
Park where Curbishley, having avoided relegation on the last day of the
season, is in the middle of a revolution. He has already lured Scott Parker
to the club from Newcastle, paying £7m and £73,000 a week. The Hammers
snatched Lucas Neill from under the nose of Liverpool in January, have tried
to hijack Joey Barton's move from Manchester City to Newcastle and made an
audacious bid to prise Andrew Johnson away from Everton, offering him
£90,000 a week. West Ham have Chelsea's Shaun Wright-Phillips in their
sights and are suddenly competing with Chelsea in terms of wages. But they
are fighting to hang on to Yossi Benayoun after rejecting a bid of £3m from
Liverpool. The 27-yearold Israel winger has two years left on his contract
and has still not signed an improved five-year deal agreed verbally last
month. Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez has cast doubts on a return to Spain
with relegation-threatened Real Betis. He said: "I want to take my career
forwards, not backwards."

Noble does it for granddad - The Sun
By ANDREW DILLON
June 14, 2007

MARK NOBLE represents tradition in a period of massive change at West Ham.
New foreign owners, new manager, the fallout from Carlos Tevez, plans for a
new stadium and pipe dreams of building a Champions League team from the
remnants of a squad that made a great escape from relegation last season.
Nothing is as it was at Upton Park — except for midfielder Noble. At the
moment his priority is helping England's Under-21s record their first win at
Euro 2007 when they face Italy tonight in Holland. But the East Ender from
Canning Town, who grew up watching from the stands at Upton Park, insists
thoughts of the Hammers and his close-knit family are never far away. Noble,
20, says the sudden death of his grandad Jim Jackson three years ago still
preys on his mind before every match and will inspire him to future success
with club and country. He said: "My grandad's sudden death was a massive
landmark in my life. It had a big effect on not just me but the whole
family. "He played golf three or four times a week, he was very fit and
strong. He was fine, then diagnosed with some sort of ulcer in his stomach.
He was told it was a lot smaller than it actually was. Two weeks later he
was gone. "It's such a shame he isn't around to see me playing in the
Premiership for West Ham. My family are big West Ham fans. "Before every
game he comes to me in my mind. "Whether it is for three or 30 seconds. I
just take a bit of time out to think about him and remind myself of what I
have achieved since he passed. "It inspires me and I just hope he is up
there somewhere looking down on me and blessing me. He died three years ago
but it's still with me. The whole family will be stronger for it. "I was in
the youth team at West Ham at the time. I made my debut just three or four
months after he died. It's so sad."
Noble often stayed at his grandad's house on school nights when he attended
the Royal Docks School. West Ham's young crowd favourite left with GCSE's in
PE, Art and English and openly admits he thought academia was a Scottish
football team. He worked his way up through England's schoolboy levels to
captain the Under-18s and was a playing substitute in the opening fixture of
this campaign — a 0-0 draw with the Czech Republic. Noble is fast gaining a
reputation as a skilful and solid midfielder and is so young his schoolboy
hero was former West Ham star Joe Cole, himself only 26! He said: "Watching
Joe Cole at Upton Park encouraged me. It shows that at clubs like West Ham
there is a chance to make it from youth team to first team. "It's important
for West Ham to keep that tradition going. The club has such a good
reputation for it, one of the best in football. "All the boys in the England
squad say when they come to West Ham the atmosphere is unbelievable. When
it's good it's very good, but when it's bad it's very bad — which we saw a
bit of last season.
"Hopefully that will change next season. There are exciting times ahead.
"The thought of everyone I know being there at games gives me a buzz — they
have season tickets and go home and away. It's mad. My uncle also goes in
the crowd at England games with a Cross of St George and my name on it!"

West Ham are understood to be lining up a £17 million move for Charlton

Hammers close on Bent for £17m
Shaul Adar
Thursday June 14, 2007
The Guardian

West Ham United hope to tie up a deal for Charlton Athletic's Darren Bent.
They were reported last night to have agreed a transfer for the striker
worth a club-record £17m, with the England international considering whether
to make the move or hold out for alternatives.
West Ham's offer is believed to comprise £16m plus the midfielder Hayden
Mullins, with whom the Charlton manager, Alan Pardew, worked at Upton Park.

Bent has been offered huge wages, reportedly £75,000 a week, to persuade him
to move to Upton Park.

Alan Curbishley, West Ham's manager, was understood to be returning last
night from holiday to seal the transfer, with West Ham beating Tottenham
Hotspur for Bent's signature on a four-year contract. His move from Charlton
has been expected after their relegation from the Premiership last season.
Yossi Benayoun, meanwhile, is keen to leave Upton Park to join Liverpool .

The midfielder has agreed terms with West Ham on a new contract worth about
£50,000 a week but has not signed it because he is aware of interest from
the Anfield club, who would pay lower wages.

Liverpool have off ered West Ham about £3m for Benayoun but have been told
the 27-year-old midfi elder is not for sale. Ronen Katzav, Benayoun's agent,
said yesterday: "We will sit tomorrow with West Ham and see where we are
going to go. It is an unpleasant situation after we agreed terms but we will
fi ght it. Still, if West Ham decide not to sell him [we will have to accept
that] - he is theirs. We will try to talk to them and convince them to let
Yossi go."

Television deal lifts average take to £1.1m
Matt Scott
Thursday June 14, 2007
The Guardian

West Ham United's spending on wages might provoke complaint from their
Premiership peers but the club are merely repositioning themselves at
historic levels of expenditure. In 2001-02, when they finished seventh in
the Premiership, they were the sixth-biggest payers behind Manchester
United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. Over the next
four years, when the Hammers suffered relegation and a two-year spell in the
Championship before returning to the top flight to become FA Cup finalists,
there were 10 clubs with bigger wage costs.

West Ham were the only Premiership team in the 2005-06 season to have
generated a transfer surplus over the previous five years - having pulled in
more than £9.25m - which suggests they have some serious catching up to do
to keep pace with their rivals.
Tottenham increased their spending on salaries over the 2005-06 season by
£7.5m and Everton by £6.1m. If West Ham are to achieve their stated aim of
being in contention for Europe again, a free-spending attitude seems
necessary.

According to football-business analysts at the accountancy firm Deloitte,
West Ham will not be the only club pouring ever greater sums into the
pockets of players. That has been made possible by the £2.7bn broadcast deal
that comes into play for the season ahead. Even the most average Premiership
player is expected to see his salary rise to more than £1m a year.

"The significant increase in broadcasting rights revenue to Premier League
clubs will fuel significant increases in wage costs over the short-to-medium
term," said Deloitte in its recent annual review of football finance.

"We expect that Premier League clubs' total wage costs will exceed £1bn for
the first time in 2007-08, [and that] the average annual gross earnings for
a Premier League player in 2007-08 will be in the region of £1.1m [from, in
2005-06,] £0.9m. During the time frame of the new broadcasting rights deals
there may be English football's first player to earn £10m per annum from a
club, equivalent to £200,000 per week."

The Premiership had seemed to be heading for a levelling off of player wages
in 2004-05, when total wages fell by 3%, the first time there had been a
reduction. This was due to a tightening or consolidation of wage expenditure
at 10 of the 20 top-division clubs.

The following season five clubs oversaw a drop in salary costs, notably
Manchester City's £3.3m fall and Fulham's £3.8m reduction, but that could
not prevent an overall 9% rise in expenditure on wages. That sent the
wages-to- turnover ratio at Premiership clubs to 62%; with total Premiership
turnover rising from about £1.3bn to closer to £1.7bn next season, clubs
will be able to afford significant increases this summer.

West Ham lead the way as Premiership salaries soar
A Ridsdale-like spree in the East End has other clubs worried and agents
excited, writes Michael Walker
Thursday June 14, 2007
The Guardian

It will be dismissed as anecdotal but within English football, and
specifically among agents, the following story is circulating and generating
huge excitement. A player from a third-tier club who moved recently to a
Championship club - one not so long ago in the Premiership - has seen his
basic £1,500-a-week salary increase not five times, nor 10, but 15 times.
The player's agent did not demand this sum; it was the club's opening
gambit.

The belief that wages in football are soaring uncontrollably is
understandable. In April a Professional Footballers' Association survey
found that the average annual salary of a Premiership player is now £676,000
- £13,000 a week - a rise of 65% on 2000. The accountancy firm Deloitte puts
the figure much higher.
It is repeated continually that agents are driving this inflation, and
numerous chairmen and directors will support that theory. What is
acknowledged less often by these chairmen is that clubs have long
contributed to the situation.

Behind the scenes now, however, some Premiership chief executives are very
anxious about wage escalation. "There's a little bit of fear out there at
the moment," Nicky Hammond, Reading's director of football, said yesterday.
"Everyone seems to be keeping their powder dry. The numbers being talked
about this season are well in excess of last year in terms of both wages and
transfers."

Although no one has gone public - yet - the club many are pointing the
finger at is West Ham United. Their chairman, Eggert Magnusson, is now being
branded "Father Christmas" by some rivals and, perhaps more worryingly,
"Ridsdale" by others. "There's no doubt in my mind that West Ham has had an
effect," says a senior figure at another Premiership club.

Annoyance stems from an open-wallet approach to the market, demonstrated on
January 22 when Blackburn's Lucas Neill walked into Upton Park on a free
transfer. Sources close to the deal have confirmed that Neill, by no means a
star player, earns £72,000 a week in east London. He had the option to go to
Liverpool but his wage there would have been "a fraction" of what he gets at
West Ham.

Within boardrooms the Neill deal is being regarded as a landmark transfer.
When asked on Tuesday about the Australian, the Middlesbrough chairman,
Steve Gibson, said: "I don't know the details of Lucas Neill other than what
I read. What I can comment on are the demands we have suffered from in the
last three or four weeks. That would suggest agents are trying to push the
barriers again. But that's the business and I am a businessman. But I have
seen some of the deals that have gone through in recent weeks and I'm glad
we haven't been involved in them."

Gibson is in a slightly tricky position. Middlesbrough, because of fashion
and location, have had to pay sometimes exorbitant wages and Tuncay Sanli,
whose signing was confirmed yesterday, is believed to be on £60,000 a week
after his free transfer from Fenerbahce. One Istanbul sports daily printed
pictures of his head on £20 notes to illustrate one reason why he is moving
to Teesside. But he may be Middlesbrough's big glamour signing, whereas at
West Ham and elsewhere the water-carriers are also being lavishly rewarded.
One agent recounted a tale of another West Ham player - who is less regarded
generally than Neill - having his wages trebled a few weeks ago.

Harry Redknapp knows the market better than most and the Portsmouth manager
- formerly at West Ham - lamented: "Craig Bellamy would do for us. But West
Ham want him and would double his wages to £100,000 a week. How do you
compete with that? We've got no chance of getting Bellamy. We're all looking
for strikers but the market's gone crazy."

A new television deal is one explanation of the sharp rise in wages but new
owners are also a factor. The Icelandic owners' fortune underwrites West Ham
but even so the comparison is being made with Peter Ridsdale's Leeds.

It was only this January that Ken Bates revealed that Gary Kelly's weekly
wage at Leeds since 2001 has been £46,000 a week. "Twelve million pounds
over five years," said the chairman. "I worked out that all the money that
Leeds earned getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League was handed
to Kelly with his new contract." Five years on, Leeds are in the third
division. By 2012 they may still not have recovered. But Gary Kelly will
still be a multimillionaire. As will Lucas Neill.

West Ham eye a challenge for the Champions League - footballingworld.com
14th June, 2007. By Matthew Day

West Ham are not behaving like a club mired in controversy and awaiting news
from an arbitration panel on whether Sheffield United will take their place
in the Premier League, consequently sending them down to the Championship.
Instead, chairman Eggert Magnusson is set on securing European football –
and that means rivalling Chelsea's spending power in terms of wages and
outbidding other big-spenders such as Tottenham, Newcastle and Liverpool.

The most recent acquisition is Charlton's Darren Bent, arriving for an
incredible £16m, who joins Scott Parker and surely many further prominent
and expensive names. Having failed to cope with just two Argentine egos last
season, the impact of having a starting eleven all earning in excess of
£70,000 each week will be intriguing. They might follow the route of
Newcastle in recent seasons and culminate in mid-table or, in the best case
scenario, replicate Tottenham's success. Martin Jol has guided Spurs to
consecutive fifth-placed finishes following significant funding, but West
Ham are looking to the Champions League – fourth position – in 2008.

Arsenal are refusing to seriously strengthen their squad, so Magnusson
believes the final Champions League position is up for grabs for whoever is
brave enough to attempt to break the top four monopoly. Despite the recent
spate of takeovers, it has not necessarily meant an increasing number of
Premier League clubs all of a sudden have millions and millions of pounds to
expend. For West Ham, though, Magnusson has thrilled by opening his pockets
and deciding Alan Curbishley can proceed with a summer of spending. In
return, he wants the East London side to join the cream of Europe in the
lucrative Champions League.

It seems a laughable concept that a side who avoided relegation on the final
day of the season could face AC Milan or Barcelona 16 months later, but if a
chequebook is left open, then progress up to the opposite end of the league
table is certainly attainable. It is a myth that the top four – Manchester
United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal – are unmovable. Tottenham almost,
and indeed should have, joined the select group in 2006 and Newcastle
enjoyed consecutive seasons there under Bobby Robson. Will West Ham be next
to shake up the mix?

The arrival of Bent, who attracted offers from both Tottenham and Liverpool,
is symptomatic of Magnusson's grand ambitions. The Charlton forward has been
consistent in his time at the Valley, and should give West Ham at least 20
goals a season, if not more, especially if the succulent talent of Carlos
Tévez is persuaded to stay. Tévez is still the only truly world class
footballer at the club, and can provide the impetus for the push for
Champions League football. Great consistency is needed to climax inside the
top four, and that means winning matches when not playing well and being
able to trouble and take points from the likes of Manchester United,
Chelsea, and rivals for the position, Tottenham.

All West Ham supporters acknowledge any aspirations are pending on Tévez's
future. It is imperative that the ex-Boca Juniors prodigy is kept at Upton
Park in order to separate the club from the Champions League pretenders; the
likes of Newcastle and Bolton, and perhaps even Tottenham. As interest from
Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Liverpool and others from across the continent
continues, West Ham must convince their star that he can win trophies and
play amongst the best clubs without the need to change address. If
Curbishley fails to guide the club into any European competition by the end
of next season, Tévez would then almost certainly depart, but for now he has
to believe in the Hammers' mission.

It is in with the new and out with the old. Lucas Neill, Matthew Upson and
Luis Boa Morte represent the former after arriving in January, while Hayden
Mullins, Marlon Harewood and Nigel Reo-Coker are heading for the exit door
as Curbishley is finally able to build and shape his team. If success isn't
guaranteed next season, then fun and fireworks definitely are.

The cash will continue to be splashed – most likely at inflated prices –
with players such as Shaun Wright-Phillips, Freddie Ljungberg, and Andy
Johnson linked recently, plus the bonus of having striker Dean Ashton
returning after missing the entire 2006/7 campaign with injury. First
though, Curbishley will have to persuade the excellent Yossi Benayoun to
rebuff Liverpool. The influential Israeli midfielder was the subject of a
refused £3m bid and Rafael Benítez is set to raise the stakes to ensure he
acquires the 27-year-old.

A takeover provides excitement and hope for all supporters, and those in
West Ham are immediately seeing the benefits of having new, foreign owners.
Last season was one to erase from the memory, and that process can be
catalysed by achieving unprecedented success in 2008. Qualification for the
Uefa Cup is a minimum target, and West Ham are also expected to challenge
for both domestic trophies. However, it is only by qualifying for the
Champions League that Magnusson's elaborate spending will be vindicated, and
finishing inside the top four looks a distinct possibility if Curbishley
continues to bring in fresh faces and is able to hold on to both Tévez and
Benayoun.

Joining Europe's elite truly would add a pertinently happy ending to the
West Ham story and saga.

EXCLUSIVE ..Hammers rage at Kop after 'insulting' £1M Benayoun bid
By John Cross 14/06/2007

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez has enraged West Ham by launching an "insulting"
£1million bid for Yossi Benayoun. The 27-year-old Hammers midfielder has now
stalled on signing a new five-year contract after telling pals he fancies a
move to Anfield. But Liverpool's cheeky attempt to get Benayoun on the cheap
has made West Ham determined not to let him go. Liverpool wanted to pay just
£1m down now, with a further £1m instalment in 12 months' time, but it has
been rejected out of hand by West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson. Benitez has
however unsettled Benayoun, who was yesterday due to sign his improved
£50,000-a-week deal at Upton Park. Benayoun, who is also advised by super
agent Pini Zahavi, cancelled the meeting claiming that one of his
representatives, Romen Katzav, could not make it. Israeli Benayoun was
offered his new contract by West Ham less than three weeks ago - and he
claimed then he would be "delighted" to stay as the club had the "best
supporters in England".

West Ham simply blew Tottenham away in the race for Charlton Athletic

of signing Bent, who was keen to play in Europe to boost his England
prospects. Manager Martin Jol may have been able to point to a young and
improving team which has finished fifth in the Premiership for the last two
seasons but that wasn't enough. Spurs refused to go higher than £12m this
summer and pay wages that would shatter their structure. The top earners at
Spurs take home £50,000 a week and their best offer to Bent was £35,000. He
will earn a massive £75,000 a week at Upton Park.

Noble hopes West Ham contines to develop own talent
tribalfooball.com - June 13, 2007

Mark Noble hopes moneybags West Ham will maintain the tradition of grooming
their own talent. Noble is fast gaining a reputation as a skilful and solid
midfielder and is so young his schoolboy hero was former West Ham star Joe
Cole, himself only 26! He told The Sun: "Watching Joe Cole at Upton Park
encouraged me. It shows that at clubs like West Ham there is a chance to
make it from youth team to first team. "It's important for West Ham to keep
that tradition going. The club has such a good reputation for it, one of the

West Ham the atmosphere is unbelievable. When it's good it's very good, but
when it's bad it's very bad ' which we saw a bit of last season. "Hopefully
that will change next season. There are exciting times ahead. "The thought
of everyone I know being there at games gives me a buzz - they have season
tickets and go home and away. It's mad. My uncle also goes in the crowd at
England games with a Cross of St George and my name on it!"

Liverpool make offer for West Ham's Benayoun
tribalfooball.com - June 13, 2007

West Ham midfielder Yossi Benayoun has attracted a bid from Liverpool. The
Daily Mail says the Hammers are fighting to hang on to Benayoun after
rejecting a bid of £3m from Liverpool. The 27-year-old Israel winger has
two years left on his contract and has still not signed an improved
five-year deal agreed verbally last month. Ronen Katzav, Benayoun's agent,
said yesterday: "We will sit tomorrow with West Ham and see where we are
going to go. It is an unpleasant situation after we agreed terms but we will
fight it. Still, if West Ham decide not to sell him [we will have to accept
that] - he is theirs. We will try to talk to them and convince them to let
Yossi go."

West Ham clinch £17M Bent deal

West Ham United have clinched a £17 million agreement with Charlton for
striker Darren Bent. The Hammers have agreed to pay £16m for Charlton's
England striker with midfielder Hayden Mullins, rated at £1m, heading to The
Valley as part of the package. Bent, 23, has agreed personal terms on a
five-year contract worth £75,000 a week and will fly home from holiday in
the Caribbean for a medical. The transfer should be completed by the
weekend to confirm another coup for Alan Curbishley and his big-spending
West Ham board, says the Daily Mail.

A fantastic occasion for Noble - WHUFC
13/06/2007 10:21

Mark Noble made his first competitive appearance for the England Under-21s
on Monday night as they drew 0-0 with the Czech Republic. The Hammers
midfielder came on as a late second-half substitute and enjoyed his first
taste of the UEFA Under-21 European Championship tournament. "It was really
good to come on and get my first competitive cap, even though it was only
for 10 minutes," he said. "It's all experience and I can use that experience
in future games. "It was a lovely stadium and it was a fantastic occasion
for me to come on and earn my first Under-21 cap. Hopefully there will be
plenty more to come."
Mark was on the pitch when England earned a penalty three minutes from time
but, despite his spot-kick success rate in training, Reading striker Leroy
Lita was the obvious choice to take it. "Leroy's our striker, he stepped up
and he missed, but things like that happen and I'm sure he'll score plenty
for us throughout the rest of the tournament," Mark said. "I have been
practising penalties, just in case I'm called upon. We've practised
penalties every day and I haven't missed one. I've scored eight out of eight
so I'm hoping that gets noted. "We had a disappointing result against the
Czech Republic. We've got Italy next, they lost their first game and we both
need to get a result. It will be a tough game but everyone's feeling relaxed
and ready for it. Serbia also look strong and we face them in the following
game, but we just have to play our best and hopefully come away with a
couple of wins."
With his trademark affability, the 20-year-old has settled into the squad
seamlessly. "I just get on with everyone, that's the kind of person I am,"
he said. "I'm making sure to keep training and relaxing when I can so I can
keep fit because it's going to be a long old season. "The gaffer's given me
a bit of holiday at the end of the tournament so I'm sure I'll be lying on a
beach somewhere for a bit. But I can't wait to get back to the Club and back
into training with the boys. It will be a fantastic season next year."

Blades will take fight to Europe - BBC

Sheffield United will turn to the European Commission for compensation if an
independent arbitration panel fails to over-turn their relegation. The
Blades are protesting at the Premier League's failure to dock West Ham
points for fielding ineligible duo Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. Blade
chairman Kevin McCabe believes their relegation will be overturned. But he
told BBC Radio Five Live that if the verdict goes against them he "would not
say that's the end of the issue". McCabe added: "We have a trip to Brussels
to meet the European Commissioner for culture and sport, Jan Figel, on
Friday, so we are making our presentation there this week. "We'll go to the
European Commission for them to opine. We believe we have maybe got a human
rights issue because of the loss of jobs that has been established if we are
relegated, the salaries that are reduced because of going from the
Premiership to the Championship and those sort of issues." However McCabe
accepted that: "If the arbitration were to go against us on Monday we
recognise that we are relegated to the Championship.
"But I don't believe the arbitration will go against us at all. A
supporters' delegation headed to Parliament in London on Wednesday to canvas
Government support for their battle. And McCabe said: "There was an
injustice committed." McCabe is confident the club will be reinstated to the
Premiership - and Professional Footballers' Association chairman Gordon
Taylor also believes they have a "valid case". An arbitration panel on 18
June will hear the Blades' claim against the Premier League's failure to
dock West Ham points over the Tevez saga. The Premier League had initially
told Sheffield United, who were relegated on the last day of the season,
that they were wasting their time and money. But McCabe claims officials
have since told the club they will regain their top-flight status if their
claim is successful. The issue has dragged on since March when the Hammers
were charged by the Premier League with breaching rules in relation to the
signings of Argentine duo Tevez and Javier Mascherano. Tevez and Mascherano,
who has since left for Liverpool, joined the club in August but their
registration with third party Media Sports Investment broke regulations.
West Ham were found guilty of acting improperly and withholding vital
documentation over the duo's ownership but they escaped a points deduction
and Tevez was allowed to continue playing. He was one of the major factors
in the club's late escape from the drop but the Blades have vowed to fight
the Premier League's decision. McCabe stated: "I think the Premier League
accept they wish the arbitration was not happening. "But in the knowledge it
is happening and it cannot be prevented, then if the decision is overturned
we should be reselected to the Premier League. "Since we really looked into
the whys and the wherefores of the Tevez affair it became apparent that a
wrong decision was made."
PFA chief Taylor added: "I think they have a real valid case. I just think
it's sad that this has been a shadow hanging over the season. "You've got to
give credit to West Ham for the way they battled back and to a lot of those
supporters and a lot of those players. They are innocent in this. "But there
were people involved at the club who knew what they were doing and they are
the ones who should be held to account."

Taylor: Blades have valid case - Sky
By Steve Bramley - Created on 13 Jun 2007

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor insists Sheffield United have a "valid
case" in their protest against relegation from the Premier League. The
Blades remain adamant that West Ham should have been docked points over the
controversial signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. Now Taylor has
added his support as a fans' delegation headed by actor Sean Bean heads to
Parliament in an attempt to drum up support ahead of Monday's judgement into
the case from the League's independent arbitration panel. "I think they have
a real valid case. I just think it's sad that this has been a shadow hanging
over the season," Taylor told talkSPORT. "You've got to give credit to West
Ham for the way they battled back and to a lot of those supporters and a lot
of those players. They are innocent in this. "But there were people involved
at the club who knew what they were doing and they are the ones who should
be held to account. If some of them are still in football, then the
penalties should apply to them for doing it wrong in the first place."

Villa deny Hammers bid
By Peter ORourke - Created on 13 Jun 2007

Aston Villa have denied reports that they have tabled a bid for unsettled
West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker. Reo-Coker is seeking a move away from
The Hammers after handing in a transfer request at Upton Park. Villa are
thought to be leading the chase for the powerful midfielder as Martin
O'Neill looks to bolster his squad for next season. Reports earlier this
month suggested Villa had made a £7million move for Reo-Coker, but Hammers
boss Alan Curbishley claimed last week that the club had received no bid
from Villa. Now Villa's head of communications Phil Mepham has admitted no
offer has been made for Reo-Coker as yet and that nothing will happen until
the player returns from international duty with England's Under 21s at the
European Championship. "Alan Curbishley said last weekend there had been no
bid from Villa and that is how things stand," Mepham told the Birmingham
Mail. "If there was ever any credence to the Reo-Coker reports that Villa
wanted to sign him, then that would not happen anyway while he is away with
the Under 21s."

Villa play down Reo-Coker link - TeamTalk

Aston Villa have distanced themselves from reports they have offered West
Ham £7million for midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker. The 23-year-old is widely
expected to join Villa this summer and it had been reported that manager
Martin O'Neill had already lodged a big-money bid for his services.
Reo-Coker's agent Tony Finnegan claimed his client would join Villa when he
returns from England duty at the European Under-21 Championship in Holland,
but West Ham boss Alan Curbishley insisted last week he was unaware of an
offer from Villa. Now Villa's Head of Communications Phil Mepham has backed
up those claims, insisting the Midlands club have not made an offer and
would not do so until the player returns from Holland. He told the
Birmingham Mail: "Alan Curbishley said last weekend there had been no bid
from Villa and that is how things stand. "If there was ever any credence to
the Reo-Coker reports that Villa wanted to sign him, then that would not
happen anyway while he is away with the Under-21s." However, Mepham insisted
O'Neill has identified a number of targets and was prepared to take his time
over his summer signings. "There is no desperate rush to get things sorted.
It is all very relaxed," he added. "He may have identified the players he
wants and may already know that they want to come, and there may be ones he
has identified who don't. "Maybe he is waiting for those who do to get back
off holiday - I don't know. At the moment things are extremely quiet."

West Ham bid for Bent - Report - TeamTalk

West Ham are set to beat Tottenham and Liverpool in the race to sign
Charlton striker Darren Bent in an £18million deal. According to the Daily
Star, the Hammers have offered £80,000 a week to secure Bent's services,
while Charlton will receive £15million plus Marlon Harewood and Hayden
Mullins, who are surplus to requirements at Upton Park. Spurs and Liverpool
have also been strongly linked with moves for the striker, who is desperate
to stay in the Premier League following Charlton's relegation in order to
enhance his England chances. A move to Upton Park would see Bent reunited
with former boss Alan Curbishley, who signed Bent for the Addicks from
Ipswich two years ago. And the Tractor Boys will also be celebrating if the
deal does go through, as they'll receive a windfall of around £2.5million
from a sell-on clause in Bent's contract.

McCabe: Could go to European CommissionBlades could take protest to Europe -
TeamTalk

Sheffield United will turn to the European Commission to seek compensation
if a panel rejects their bid to overturn their relegation. A supporters'
delegation headed to Parliament on Wednesday to attempt to drum up
Government support as the club continue to protest at West Ham's escape from
a points deduction for fielding ineligible duo Carlos Tevez and Javier
Mascherano. Sheffield United plc chairman Kevin McCabe is positive that an
arbitration panel, which convenes on Monday, will back the Blades' argument.
He also revealed they will accept their relegation if it does not, but would
pursue financial compensation. He told BBC Radio Five Live: "The reality is
that there was an injustice committed and as a result Sheffield United were
relegated from the Premiership in the season that's just finished. "The
reason is simple; one club breached the rules, were permitted to play two
Argentinians until January and one thereafter. "The commission did say very
clearly when they opined that normally points should be deducted but because
it was the end of April and not January, would reconsider and maybe just
fine West Ham. The committee got it wrong. The arbitration will get it right
come Monday. "If the arbitration were to go against us on Monday we
recognise that we are relegated to the Championship."
However, McCabe added: "I wouldn't say that's the end of the issue. We have
on Friday a trip to Brussels to meet the European Commissioner for culture
and sport, Jan Figel, so we are making our presentation there this week.
"But I don't believe the arbitration will go against us at all. "We'll go to
the European Commission for them to opine. We believe we have maybe got a
human rights issue because of the loss of jobs that has been established if
we are relegated, the salaries that are reduced because of going from the
Premiership to the Championship and those sort of issues."
Asked about the purpose of going to Brussels, McCabe said: "I suppose
compensation. I've no idea how much. "The real key is the arbitration, to
right the wrong of the injustice that was caused by the first decision. We
didn't field ineligible players."

Inter confirm interest in Tevez - TeamTalk

Internazionale owner Massimo Moratti has confirmed the Serie A club are
chasing West Ham striker Carlos Tevez. The Italian champions are keen to
acquire the services of the Argentina frontman. When asked about Tevez,
Moratti said: "It's true that we are interested in him, he is a player that
we like a lot.
"He has quality and character, something we need." The 23-year-old, who is
currently preparing for this month's Copa America in Venezuela, moved to
Upton Park from Brazilian side Corinthians at the start of last season.
Uruguay forward Alvaro Recoba is set to leave Inter this summer, with the
player linked to Spanish side Atletico Madrid, meaning Tevez is considered a
possible replacement, alongside Cagliari's David Suazo. Inter are currently
in negotiations with Cagliari to sign the Honduras striker, who has been a
target of the Nerazzurri for some time. "We are quite advanced in our
negotiations to acquire Suazo, but until the deal is completed we cannot
take anything for granted," admitted Moratti. Moratti also confirmed Inter
are also targeting Roma's Romania defender Christian Chivu. "Regarding
Chivu, we are talking to his club," added Moratti. "He is a player that
interests us, but we will have to wait and see if we will be able to
complete the deal."

Hammers vow to hang on to Tevez - Daily Mail
Last updated at 11:29am on 13th June 2007

West Ham are ready to cause havoc in the transfer market by blocking
attempts to snap up Carlos Tevez. The Argentina star is being touted with a
£40m price tag, and advisor Kia Joorabchian is in talks with several sides
in a bid to move the 23-year-old along. But the Hammers are reported in the
Daily Star to be ready to clamp down on any moves by Joorabchian - because
they now own his registration. FIFA rules state a switch can only be
ratified once a buyer is in possession of a player's registration and
documents show that Tevez is registered to West Ham until 2010. Joorabchian
is reported to have been surprised at the lack on contact from Upton Park
since the end of the season - when Tevez scored the winning goal at Old
Trafford that kept the Hammers in the top flight. The West Ham board feel
the players is theirs and want him at the club next seasson and they can now
either order him back for pre-seaon training or demand a huge slice of any
transfer fee for Tevez. And with Joorabchian and his MSI group believing
they own the sole rights of the player, the matter could yet up in court.

Come on down boyo - newham Recorder
13 June 2007

WEST HAM defender Danny Gabbidon has called on his Welsh team-mate Craig
Bellamy to come south and join the Hammers from Liverpool. Stories have
suggested that Alan Curbishley can land the new Wales captain for £9million
and for Gabbidon, that is a deal too good to miss. "He would love it at West
Ham," said the 27-year-old centre half, who was plagued by injury last
season, but after two games with Wales is slowly returning to full fitness."
"He would be an instant fans' favourite. Craig is a quality player but what
West Ham fans would love is that he never stops running, even if the team
are 3-0 down. He is a defender's nightmare, like a terrier snapping at your
heels and I have never known him give less than 100 per cent." Bellamy had a
mixed season at Liverpool, scoring nine goals in his first campaign
following a £6million move from Blackburn Rovers. At £9million, he seems to
be a little overpriced, but with West Ham's attempts to sign Carlos Tevez on
a full-time basis, seeming to have hit the rocks, 27-year-old Bellamy may be
a sound investment. Gabbidon certainly thinks so: "Craig would be a great
signing for us and would definitely improve the squad," he said. "The
manager has a lot of money to spend and Craig is the kind of player the club
are trying to attract to improve the team so we do not have any relegation
troubles next season." He continued: "We have got Dean Ashton returning
after missing last season and I think Dean and Craig would make a great
partnership. "Dean is a tall and skilful front man while Craig is a
hard-working, quick striker with great movement." Whether either Bellamy or
Curbishley would be interested in a move remains to be seen, but one thing
is for sure, if Gabbion himself can join Ashton back on the fit list for
next season, then West Ham have already got two top class players to improve
on last season's squad.

Inter - nothing doing - KUMB
Filed: Tuesday, 12th June 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

Carlos Tevez has no intention of moving to Inter, despite a flood of reports
suggesting otherwise. Tevez was interviewed last night for Argentinian TV in
an item about the forthcoming Copa America, in which he will be playing.
During the interview the 23-year-old striker was asked by a journalist about
the possibility of a summer move to the Italian giants, to which he replied
'I know they are interested - but I don't know anything else." Some media
sources decided that this comment equated to an admission by Tevez that he
was on his way to Serie A - well it is a quiet news day after all - and that
was subsequently carried by a number of media outlets and websites. However
at present there is still no fresh news on Tevez's immediate future,
although Kia Joorabchian is due to meet Eggert Magnusson for further talks
on the situation later this week.

Inter confirm Tevez interest - Sky
By Graeme Bailey - Created on 12 Jun 2007

Italian champions Internazionale have confirmed their interest in signing
Carlos Tevez. The West Ham striker revealed on Tuesday that he would be keen
to move to Milan as he could link-up with a number of Argentines already
plying their trade with the Nerazzurri. Manchester United, Liverpool and
Chelsea all appear keen on giving Tevez the option of remaining in the
Premiership, with a move from West Ham looking highly likely this summer.
Inter supremo Massimo Moratti has now revealed that he would like to sign
Tevez - who is currently with Argentina preparing for the Copa America.
"It's true," Moratti said of Inter's interest in Tevez. "He's a player we
like a lot. "He has qualities and character. It's what we need."
Moratti also spoke about Inter's talks with Cagliari for Honduran striker
David Suazo. Cagliari supremo Massimo Cellino has criticised Inter for not
sealing the move, but Moratti feels they are still on course to land him.
"The negotiation is quite forward, we will see how it will continue,"
Moratti said.

McCabe 'duty-bound' to fight club's case - Telegraph
By Rob Stewart
Last Updated: 1:05am BST 13/06/2007

Steve Gibson, the Middlesbrough chairman, last night expressed support for
Sheffield United's determined quest to be reinstated to the Premiership.
Gibson feels Kevin McCabe, the Sheffield United plc chairman, is
"duty-bound" to fight the Yorkshire club's corner to its ultimate conclusion
in the Carlos Tevez saga.
An arbitration panel in London will next week deliberate over the Yorkshire
club's challenge to the Premier League's decision to fine West Ham rather
than deduct points and cancel the registration of Tevez, the Argentina
forward, and Gibson feels McCabe is well within his rights to refuse to back
down. Gibson, whose club are close to signing Turkish international striker
Tuncay Sanli, said: "I don't know all the facts about Tevez but if I was
Sheffield United I'd take it as far as I possibly could because you are
duty-bound to your players, your manager, to your fans to do that."
McCabe has suggested the Premier League could be expanded to accommodate
both his club and West Ham, but Gibson stopped short of backing such a
measure. "The Premiership has been 20 clubs for a long, long time. It's
obviously the best formula," he added.

Sheffield plan to quiz PM over points dispute - Telegraph

Sheffield United have drawn up a remarkable plot to question Prime Minister

Carlos Tevez affair. The relegated club, who want to replace the Hammers in
next season's top flight, take a delegation of 100 supporters, headed by
Hollywood star Sean Bean, to meet MPs at the House of Commons today. United
have invited the 49 MPs backing an anti-West Ham Early Day Motion, with MP
Clive Betts now set to table a Parliamentary question asking why the Hammers
escaped with a £5.5 million fine despite fielding an ineligible player. The
move would heap pressure on the Premier League ahead of Sheffield's
arbitration hearing on Monday and Tuesday, which will rule if the Premier
League were wrong not to deduct points from West Ham.
MPs have until tomorrow to table a question for Blair at next Wednesday's
Prime Minister's Questions session. The next opportunity to question sports
minister Richard Caborn would not be until June 25, in the next Department
of Culture, Media and Sport session. Sheffield Attercliffe MP Betts said: "I
will discuss it with Alan Keen MP and there may well be parliamentary
questions put down." A United source added: "A number of MPs have said
they'll lend support and we're exploring ways to do that."
Keen, who hosts today's Commons summit in his role as All Party Football
Group chairman, criticised West Ham for lying about Tevez's status as
part-owned by a third-party and also accused the Premier League of making
huge errors of judgment. "It seems West Ham made a serious breach of the
rules and didn't tell the truth, which was even worse than committing the
crime," he said. "They were let off - and there's no question about it if
you look at previous decisions about ineligible players. AFC Wimbledon were
deducted 18 points, reduced to three on appeal. "West Ham's £5 million fine
is nothing compared to the amount of money they get by avoiding relegation.
"The Premier League seem to have made a serious mistake."
Bean will speak for the Blades today. A club source said: "Sean thinks it's
a point of principle as football is about fairness - so the club that stuck
to the rules shouldn't be punished for that." The Premier League declined to
comment.

Atletico ready to sell hitman Torres - TeamTalk

Atletico Madrid will spark a transfer scramble next week by confirming that
star striker Fernando Torres will be in the summer sales. Manchester
United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been linked with moves for
Torres in the past and would be forced to offer at least £15million for his
services.
Tottenham, West Ham and Newcastle also have the funds to mount rival bids -
but the lure of Champions League football gives the big four a major
advantage. The 23-year-old has scored 82 goals in 212 league appearance for
Atletico, while his record for Spain is 14 in 42 games. His club's failure
to earn a UEFA Cup slot this season means they are expecting to lose their
star forward and the Premier League is the most likely destination.

Gibson backs Blades' campaign over West Ham affair
Michael Walker
Wednesday June 13, 2007
The Guardian

Middlesbrough's chairman Steve Gibson yesterday offered Sheffield United his
vocal support in their quest for "fairness" over the Carlos Tevez-West Ham
issue but he has refused to become active on behalf of the Bramall Lane club
and said he is not persuaded by the idea of the Premiership being expanded
to 21 clubs next season.
Gibson, who hopes Middlesbrough make "one or two spectacular" signings this
summer, said: "I don't know all the facts about Tevez but if I were
Sheffield United I'd take it as far as I possibly could because you are duty
bound to your manager, players and your fans to do that. We get on very well
with Sheffield United and I wish them well."
With the Blades due to send representatives to Parliament today in their
"Campaign for Fairness" over Tevez, Gibson's backing is timely but he is
reluctant to become embroiled in an inter-club argument. His opinion has
weight given Boro's three-point deduction 10 years ago that led to the
club's relegation from the Premiership. "We don't think it's appropriate to
support one club against another club," Gibson said. "I think it's not right
this club should act as judge and jury, I think that's what the Premier
League and the FA are for. The Premiership has been 20 clubs for a long
time, it's obviously the best formula. To make it 21 is too easy a way out.
I think it's for the 20 clubs to comment on."
The Yorkshire club will discover their fate when the arbitration committee
meets on Monday and Tuesday. Fulham's owner Mohamed Al Fayed has also given
United strong backing. "What happened to us 10 years ago is buried," Gibson
added, "it still hurts and I'm still a bit bitter about it. But we move on."

Inter keen on adding £25m Tevez to stable of Argentinians
Paolo Menicucci and Stuart James
Wednesday June 13, 2007
The Guardian

Internazionale's president Massimo Moratti has said he is interested in
signing Carlos Tevez from West Ham. "It's true, we really like the player,"
Moratti said yesterday of the Argentinian forward. "He has the qualities and
the character we need."

The 23-year-old joined West Ham from Corinthians last summer in a
controversial move but recently admitted he stopped learning English because
he did not know where he would play next season. Internazionale, the Italian
champions, could have money to invest from the likely departures of the
forwards Alvaro Recoba and Adriano. According to reports in Italy, the club
could be ready to offer a £25m deal and have already talked with Tevez's
representative, Kia Joorabchian.

Tevez admitted he would like to play in a team packed with Argentinians.
Eight are already playing at the San Siro. "It would be nice to play in
Italy, especially in a team that has so many Argentinians," he said. "I know
there will be some meetings and some discussions, but I really don't know if
there is anything official yet."

United face competition from Inter for Tévez's signature - The Times
Gary Jacob

Carlos Tévez's future is expected to be resolved within the week, with the
Argentina forward close to an agreement with Manchester United or Inter
Milan. Inter have made an offer for Tévez, who was largely responsible for
keeping West Ham United in the Premiership last season.

Sheffield United, who were relegated, are determined to see West Ham
punished further for breaching FA Premier League rules in the transfer of
Tévez and have found an unlikely ally. Kia Joorabchian, who owns the
economic rights to the Argentinian, is said to be seriously considering a
request to provide the evidence to support Sheffield United's case.

West Ham finished three points above the relegation zone after being fined a
record £5.5 million by an independent board, which decided not to deduct
points.

Joorabchian has been approached by Kevin McCabe, the Sheffield United
chairman, because it is believed that he has important information about the
contract that he agreed with West Ham for Tévez last summer. From Monday, a
three-man arbitration panel will consider whether the original disciplinary
process was carried out correctly. West Ham claimed that they ripped up the
third-party agreement with Joorabchian to the satisfaction of the Premier
League, clearing Tévez to play in the final three matches of the season. But
Joorabchian has said that he has not cancelled the agreement and that Tévez
played only with his permission.

To publicise the case further, Sheffield United will take a delegation of
100 supporters, headed by Sean Bean, the actor, to meet MPs at the House of
Commons today.

Tévez is one of the most sought-after players in the world, with Chelsea and
Real Madrid having also expressed an interest. His seven goals as the season
reached its climax inspired West Ham's recovery.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, has been looking for another striker
and has proposed a loan deal for a season with the option of a permanent
move to Old Trafford. He has signalled his intent by committing more than
£50 million to new signings.

Owen Hargreaves the England midfield player, has been signed for £17 million
from Bayern Munich and United have signed Nani, the 20-year-old Sporting
Lisbon winger, and Anderson, the 19-year-old FC Porto playmaker, with the
two deals understood to be worth £17.3 million and £20.4 million
respectively.

While a move to United could be appealing for Tévez, Joorabchian has turned
down an offer for Tévez from Inter worth about £30 million. The businessman
might expect that Tévez would fetch £40 million when it is considered that
Andriy Shevchenko, at 29, was sold to Chelsea by AC Milan for £31 million
last summer. Tévez, at 23, has yet to reach his peak and is more proven than
Wayne Rooney when United paid Everton £23 million – rising to a possible £31
million – for him.

Tévez has said that Inter are attractive because of the eight Argentina
players at the San Siro. They include Hernán Crespo, Walter Samuel, Esteban
Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti. "I know Inter is interested in me," Tévez
said. "It would be nice to play in Italy, especially in a team that has so
many Argentinians. But I don't know anything official yet."

A deal cannot be concluded for Tévez, who is training with Argentina for the
Copa America that begins in Venezuela this month, until Joorabchian returns
from Buenos Aires this week.

Gibson tells Sheffield United to go all the way for justice - The Times
George Caulkin

Steve Gibson, the Middlesbrough chairman, has urged Sheffield United to take
their quest for justice in the Carlos Tévez affair "as far as they can".
Next week, an arbitration panel will hear the Yorkshire club's case that the
FA Premier League should have docked West Ham United points over the
Argentina striker's controversial registration rather than issue them with a
£5.5 million fine.

While Middlesbrough's support for Sheffield United is purely moral, Gibson –
an independent and influential voice – articulated the feelings of many in
football yesterday. His club were relegated in 1997 after a controversial
points deduction for failing to fulfil a league fixture away to Blackburn
Rovers, although that memory does not motivate his present concerns.

"What happened ten years ago is buried – it still hurts and I'm still a bit
bitter about it, but we move on," he said. "I don't know all the facts about
Tévez, but if I was Sheffield United I'd take it as far as I possibly could
because you are duty bound to your players and your fans to do that. We get
on very well with Sheffield United and I wish them well."

While Middlesbrough officials have spoken to Sir Dave Richards, the Premier
League chairman, to highlight their unease at the West Ham verdict, Gibson
has refrained from direct participation in legal action because "we don't
think it's appropriate to support one club against another club".

"It's not right that this club should act as judge and jury," he said.
"That's what the Premier League and the FA are for."

Middlesbrough last night completed the free transfer of Tuncay Sanli from
Fenerbahçe. Keith Lamb, the club's chief executive, went to Turkey to
negotiate a four-year contract with the 25-year-old, beating off competition
for the player from Birmingham City and Villarreal.

Having secured the £1.5 million signing of Jérémie Aliadière from Arsenal,
subject to a medical, Gibson and Gareth Southgate, the Middlesbrough
manager, have moved swiftly to compensate for the loss of Mark Viduka, who
joined Newcastle United rather than extend his deal at the Riverside
Stadium. "We have four targets in our sights and one or two we hope will be
spectacular," Gibson said.
