Behind the Scenes with the Head Groundsman - WHUFC
01/06/2007 11:13

The season may be over, but there's no rest for West Ham United Head Groundsman Dougie Robertson and his team as they work tirelessly to get all the pitches perfect again in time for August. "We're starting work on the pitch at Upton Park hopefully on Monday, weather depending. It should take about seven or eight days to do. "There are going to be a lot of changes but they won't be seen. It's all underground work. Weather depending, it should all be working within a couple of weeks. "The training ground pitches are now completed, we're just waiting on the grass growing. There's building work starting on Monday to do internal changes at the training ground, which we're involved in. "The drainage work has been done at the training ground. The Little Heath ones were fully stripped off, re-sanded and the drainage work was done. We've just done the reseeding, which should be through by the middle of next week and we start cutting a week later."
Dougie and his team are used to working tirelessly behind the scenes, and he described a typical week's work for the ground staff during the season. "We'll be at the training ground Monday morning to set up for training and find out what the team's movements are that week and if they're training at the stadium at any point. "We'll go from there to Little Heath to set up a game and find out the training schedule for that week for the youth team. Then we're at the stadium two or three times a week with Danny, setting up ready for the game. We'll be here majority of the day on Friday, doing the final preparations. "If it was a game on Saturday, we'd be cutting the pitch on the Saturday at about six in the morning and then we'd continue watering it through the course of the day. It would depend on how Alan Curbishley wanted it. "The hours are quite long. Now we have the lighting units we have to bring them back into the stadium, depending on the time of year, or back onto the concourse. "On a night game, we'd be looking at getting out between 12 and one in the morning from being in at half-six/seven in the morning and back in at 7 the next day."
But for Dougie, who is in his tenth year at Upton Park, being in the top five pitches in the League last season and seeing the Hammers ensure Premier League status was reward enough.
"Everyone found that little bit extra when things weren't going so well on the pitch," he said. "When things were asked they were done straight away, rather than at the next available slot. I'd like to think we helped in some way."

Hammers agree Parker price - Sky
By Andrew Scurr - Created on 1 Jun 2007

West Ham United have agreed an undisclosed fee with Newcastle United for Scott Parker. The midfielder has been allowed to move on by new Magpies boss Sam Allardyce who is believed to be targeting Joey Barton as Parker's replacement. Parker will once again link up with Alan Curbishley at West Ham, with the pair having previously worked together at Charlton. The 26-year-old left The Addicks in January 2004 in a £10million move to Chelsea, but he failed to make a real impression at Stamford Bridge. Parker joined Newcastle last summer but his time in the North East lasted just one season as he is now heading back to London. The Hammers are believed to be paying in the region of £8.5million for Parker's services and have fended off late interest from Tottenham. Parker will likely be Nigel Reo-Coker's replacement at Upton Park after the West Ham captain handed in a transfer request last week.

Reo-Coker doesn't feel wanted - Sky
By Andrew Scurr - Created on 1 Jun 2007

Nigel Reo-Coker claims he has felt unwanted at West Ham since January and that is the reason for him handing in a transfer request. Skysports.com revealed this week that the Hammers captain had asked for a transfer having become disillusioned with life at Upton Park. Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News, Reo-Coker explained the reasons behind his decision to quit the club where he spent the past four seasons. "My personal feeling is I'm not wanted at West Ham United regardless of what's printed in the papers and what's been said," he said. "I just don't feel wanted and it's the way that I've been feeling for a very long time, since January. "It's disappointing and heartbreaking just to see that I'm not wanted." He added: "It will be sad (to leave), very sad. It's not a nice way to leave a club, I don't think any player wants to leave a club under these circumstances."
Aston Villa, Newcastle and Tottenham are believed to be keen on the 23-year-old England Under 21 midfielder, with the former thought to be favourites for his signature. However, Reo-Coker is not thinking about his future destination until after this month's European Under 21 championship. "There's no progress, I don't know where my future lies right now," he added. "All I'm just trying to do is prepare myself for the Under 21s. "I honestly don't pay any attention to that (speculation) at the moment. "At the end of the day if a club wants me they can contact West Ham United and they'll deal with that side of it."

Levante reject Riga offer - Sky
By Francisco Acedo - Created on 1 Jun 2007

Levante have rejected an offer for winger Riga Mustapha. Five Premiership clubs watched the Ghana-born wide-man in action at the weekend as he scored two in a win over Racing Santander. Manchester City, Wigan, West Ham, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough all watched Mustapha and one of them is now believed to have lodged an offer. Spanish reports say Middlesbrough, via an agent working on their behalf, lodged a €2million (£1.3million) bid - although it remains to be seen which club indeed made a firm approach. One thing which is clear is that the offer was not acceptable. "The offer is insufficient," president Pedro Villarroel told the Valencian. Reports suggest Levante want €4million (£2.7million) before they would consider letting Mustapha leave.

The First Of The Many For West Ham - West Ham Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 1 June, 2007 - 15:09.

The arrival of Scott Parker at West Ham from Newcastle heralds the beginning of the Magnusson and Curbishley revolution, while not maybe fitting into the truly world class of players promised, his addition is a good indication that Hammers are really going to give it a go next season. In case it had escaped the notice of those wearing claret and blue spectacles, the club narrowly avoided relegation from the top flight, and despite the excitement of the successful campaign to stay up, another season on the same lines would probably see the coronary attack rate go up all over the east end and surrounding neighbourhoods amongst players, management, owners and fans alike. Stability has got to be the order of the day, there are those who questioned Alan Curbishley's ability to keep the club afloat and he has proved them wrong, whether he has the ability to take the Hammers into the Champion's league is debatable, but no one can doubt his ability to keep the club in a comfortable position while the deep rooted changes that are required can be carried out.
Of course the next major signing is of a player who is already on the club's books, well at least in legal parlance, Carlitos Tevez. Forget Craig Bellamy et al, Egget Magnusson is determined to keep his man, the Hammers chairman has a habit of 'opening up' to Icelandic publications, not that he is anywhere near as closed as his predecessor, and in one of these interviews recently stated that he saw "keeping hold of his star striker as a challenge that could lay down a marker to other clubs and for the future of West Ham". What a guy, what a chairman. Chelska, Spuds, Gooners, you are all horribly saddled with unstructured debt, your boys are going to take a hell of a beating, much sooner than later. - Ed

Reo-Coker: It's heartbreaking I'm not wanted at West Ham - Daily Mail
Last updated at 15:56pm on 1st June 2007

West Ham captain Nigel Reo-Coker has told of the "hurt" and "heartbreak" which has prompted him to hand in a transfer request. The 23-year-old England Under 21 international midfielder has decided on a move after he was not given the right assurances over his future by the Barclays Premiership club's board. The Hammers midfield lacked quality and grit for much of last season and the team needed an end of season flourish to preserve their top flight status. And Reo-Coker said today: "I don't think I have been supported at the club. "There has been a lot of negative press which was very hurtful - I was proud to be at West Ham regardless of what was in the press. "I thought I should be with the club and I enjoyed my time there, so it's very disappointing and heartbreaking to see I'm not wanted there." The player's advisor Tony Finnigan, said earlier this week he is hopeful the player's future will be decided in the next few weeks.
But Reo-Coker, linked with moves to Tottenham and Newcastle, said on Sky Sports News today: "There's no progress - I don't know where my future lies. "Until I know something it's all about the England Under 21s, preparing mentally and physically for this summer's tournament (the European Championships). "I don't pay attention to the clubs I am being linked with. "It's just about being professional and concentrating on the Under 21s. I've always been a team player and that's one of the things I believe in. "It's very sad, to leave a club under these circumstances - but it's part of football and part of life."

West Ham United; Season Review 2006/07 - SquareFootball

01/06/2007 15:05:00.

"Arguments still rage about whether Tevez should ever have graced the Upton Park pitch."

West Ham United's shocking 2006/07 campaign ended with a last day reprieve, when victory at Manchester United saved the Hammers from what had looked an inevitable relegation.
The 1-0 Old Trafford success was brought courtesy of a Carlos Tevez goal, and was the second time that the east London side had beaten United in the year when Sir Alex Ferguson's men regained the Premiership crown. Tevez's contribution, particularly in the run-in towards the end of the season, was colossal and controversial in equal measures. The Argentine striker scored only seven league goals in all, but many of them came in the months of March and April when desperate times called for desperate measures. He almost single-handedly inspired the Hammers to a run of seven wins from their last nine games, saving their Premiership bacon when all looked lost. Yet arguments still rage about whether Tevez should ever have graced the Upton Park pitch. Representatives of relegated Sheffield United aswell as other lower placed sides such as Wigan Athletic and Fulham still insist that the club should have been deducted points after admitting that they had broke Premier League rules on third party ownership of players. Furthermore, those clubs maintain that Tevez's subsequent eligibility remains unproven.

In August, Tevez had been placed at West Ham by the mysterious Iranian Kia Joorabchian along with fellow Argentine international Javier Mascherano as talk of a takeover gathered pace. In the event the club was bought by Icelandic biscuit baron Eggert Magnusson shortly after, and it was he who was left to deal with the eventual fallout from the unusual arrangement.

Joorabchian still claims that it is he and not the club who owns the registration of Tevez (Mascherano moved on to Liverpool after failing to win a regular starting slot). Despite the administrative cock-up, Tevez was allowed to play on by the Premier League who fined the club £5.5million. That decision was to prove West Ham's saviour in the end, though we may still hear more on the subject from those who feel wronged by the Premier League's decision.

Setting aside the legal wrangling, West Ham's escape is nothing short of miraculous when one considers their plight in early March. A 2-0 and then a 3-2 lead was blown in a 4-3 loss at home to Tottenham, and with Arsenal and Chelsea still on the fixture list it seemed that there was no hope for survival. Yet Arsenal were seen off thanks to a Bobby Zamora goal, while Blackburn Rovers fell in yet more controversial circumstances when both West Ham goals looked to have been as a result of generous refereeing decisions.

Middlesbrough, Everton, Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers were also dispatched, with even the 3-0 reverse at Sheffield United and the 4-1 home drubbing by Chelsea failing to pull the plug on the Hammers' top-flight stay. It was a truly remarkable run, but it still needed Wigan Athletic's 2-1 win at Sheffield United to ensure Premiership football at Upton Park next season. Cue the legal arguments.

It had all started so bleakly for the Hammers, with manager Alan Pardew replaced by Alan Curbishley at Christmas. Pardew had overseen a dreadful start to the season, that despite being the man responsible for last season's terrific run to the FA Cup final and top-half league finish. The arrivals of Tevez and Mascherano seemed to upset the jellied eel cart, with the former Reading manager often refusing flatly to include the Argentine duo in the starting line-up. A 4-0 defeat by Bolton Wanderers on December 9 proved the last straw for Pardew, who in a bizarre twist went on to take up Curbishley's old post at The Valley.

Curbishley spent big in the January window, bringing in the likes of Luis Boa Morte, Lucas Neill and Matthew Upson in an attempt to turn things around. Yet injuries to all three at various stages of the run-in looked to have scuppered his efforts until that late, devastating, Tevez-inspired run. When West Ham United were thumped 6-0 by Reading on New Year's Day you could have got very long odds on a revival, and perhaps even longer by the time of Tottenham's late show at Upton Park in March.

Turning to the cups, Pardew's side were massively outplayed by Italian side Palermo in their first UEFA Cup assignment. They went down in both legs, suffering a 1-0 home defeat before a 3-0 pasting in Italy. Nor could they replicate last year's heroics in the FA Cup, bowing out at the fourth round stage after a 1-0 home defeat by Watford. That followed the indignity of defeat to giant-killing Chesterfield in the Carling Cup, with the Saltergate side having already put Manchester City out of the competition.

Having secured their top-flight status for next term then, West Ham are now expected to push on following Magnusson's multi-million pound investment. The club are close to a deal to sign Newcastle United skipper Scott Parker at the time of writing, and Manchester City's troubled but talented midfielder Joey Barton could follow. With Mascherano gone the future of Tevez remains unclear. The 22-year-old has been linked with all of the top four Premiership clubs, aswell as various sides in Spain in Italy over the last few months. He is unlikely to remain at West Ham, but the money is there to secure a reasonable replacement. Charlton's Darren Bent has been strongly linked with a reunion with his old manager after the Addicks failed to beat the drop.

West Ham's 2006/07 campaign shows how far the mighty can fall, and that you can never rest on your laurels in the Premiership. Yet thanks to the miracles of Tevez, they seem in a strong position to finally build on their successes of a year ago.

Mears poised for Rams move - Clubcall
20070601 13:12

Billy Davies has confirmed that Derby are close to wrapping up the permanent transfer of Tyrone Mears from West Ham United. The 24-year-old moved to the Rams on loan in January and played a key role in the club's promotion to the Premiership. Mears cost the Hammers £1million when he joined them from Preston North End last summer and the Premiership outfit are likely to demand the same fee from Derby. "Tyrone is a young player who has plenty of potential, as we saw in the play-off final, and we are now trying to tie up the deal," manager Davies told the Derby Evening Telegraph. "He is raw at times, he makes mistakes and his concentration level can dip.

Hammers get Parker, now for Barton - Daily Mail
Last updated at 12:52pm on 1st June 2007

West Ham are lining up an all-new English central-midfield as it emerged they are in talks to sign Manchester City's bad boy Joey Barton having today landed Scott Parker from Newcastle for an undisclosed fee. The Hammers are prepared to meet the controversial Barton's £5.5million release clause and aim to pair him alongside former Charlton star Parker, who it is thought has cost about £7m. Newcastle hoped to use the money from the Parker sale to sign Barton, but may now switch their attention to West Ham's Nigel Reo-Coker. England international Parker travelled to London to meet with West Ham officials and pave the way to becoming Alan Curbishley's first signing of the summer. Never before have West Ham been in a position where they can tempt leading Premiership players to Upton Park with healthy salaries. But, as one source put it, money has ceased to be an issue since Eggert Magnusson's consortium took over the club.
Curbishley has been given significant funds - thought to be in excess of £40million - to ensure there is no repeat of last season's relegation battle and to spearhead a challenge for Europe.

West Ham complete Parker deal - ViewLondon.co.uk

West Ham United appear to be on the verge of completing their capture of Newcastle captain Scott Parker after the clubs reportedly agreed a fee. Although the price is undisclosed, rumours suggest it is likely to be more than the £6.5 million the Magpies paid for his services from Chelsea but less than the £10 million the Blues paid Charlton for him in the summer of 2004. Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce has risked making an enemy of some sections of the St James' Park crowd by selling Parker, who is widely considered to be the club's most consistent performer. However, the former Bolton boss is keen to stamp his authority on his new post and an exodus of the current crop of players who managed only a 14th-place finish in the Premiership last season always seemed likely. Parker's move back to London will also see him reunited with former manager Alan Curbishley, who was the Charlton boss throughout the 26-year-old's stay at the Valley. In securing the England international's services, West Ham have pipped rivals Tottenham Hotspur who were also believed to be in the running to sign him.
Several players are already being linked with a move to the north-east as a direct replacement for Parker, including West Ham's own captain Nigel Reo-Coker and former Manchester City skipper Joey Barton. Both players seem set to leave their respective clubs in the summer after ongoing disputes.

West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker would relish a move to Newcastle, according to his agent Tony Finnegan. The midfielder is apparently desperate to leave the Upton Park club and submitted a transfer request last week. He has been linked with a number of Premiership clubs since and with Scott Parker close to leaving Newcastle for the Hammers in an £8million deal, boss Sam Allardyce reportedly sees Reo-Coker as the ideal replacement. The 23-year-old would cost around £8million and Finnegan told the Sun: "Sam Allardyce knows how to get in contact with Nigel and we would welcome a call. "If Sam said he wanted to speak, Nigel would be on the train in a shot. It would be very interesting to see what his plans are for Newcastle."

"He is raw at times, he makes mistakes and his concentration level can dip. Parker plumps for West Ham
Midfielder reunited with former manager at Upton Park
Staff and agencies
Friday June 1, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

Scott Parker has signed for West Ham from Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £7m. The move will reunite the former Magpies captain with Alan Curbishley, who he first played for at Charlton. It is understood that the prospect of teaming up with his former manager was a major factor in the midfielder's decision to opt for the East End club ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who were also interested in securing his signature.

An England international with three caps to his name, Parker took over as Newcastle skipper in the wake of Alan Shearer's retirement in the summer of 2006, a year after moving to Tyneside for £6.5m following a frustrating spell at Chelsea. Having been signed from Charlton for £10m, Parker seldom figured in Jose Mourinho's side because of a foot injury. Parker is Curbishley's first signing of the summer, but is unlikely to be last given that the West Ham boss has been given a significant warchest to ensure there is no repeat of the club's dangerous flirtation with relegation last season. Parker is seen as a direct replacement for Hammers captain Nigel Reo-Coker, who is expected to leave Upton Park any day now, with Aston Villa leading the chase for his signature.

Blades stay away from Premier AGM - The Star Sheffield

SHEFFIELD United are not expected to attend the Premier League AGM as they concentrate their efforts on overturning their relegation to the Championship. The meeting marks the end of United's membership of the FAPL, with chief executive Richard Scudamore announcing he will forcibly revoke their card following the club's decision to declare legal war on his organisation's failure to deduct West Ham points for a serious breach of transfer regulations. Earlier this month, United had threatened not to resign from the competition until June 18's arbitration hearing into the matter delivers its verdict. But, despite enjoying the backing of Wigan, Fulham, Charlton and Middlesbrough, officials at Bramall Lane have opted to confine their protest to matters of protocol in order to protect their moral position ahead of what could turn out to be one of the most tumultuous summers in the history of English football.
Arguing that the FAPL's "irrational" display of leniency towards West Ham ultimately cost his side a top-flight place next term, United's plc chairman, Kevin McCabe, has vowed to pursue the matter to the High Court if necessary but is expected to delay a direct confrontation by refusing to travel tomorrow. "I don't think we will be going," a United source told The Star. Brussels based property developer McCabe, who will return to England to oversee United's preparations for arbitration, has been outspoken in his criticism of the FAPL. But, barring a late change of heart, he will allow others to do his bidding inside the AGM while he concentrates on picking holes in the argument that West Ham have been adequately punished. Matthew Kilgallon has missed the cut for the England squad for the European Under-21 Championships this summer. Ahmed Fathi has been selected for Egypt's African Nations qualifiers against Mauritania and Burundi, while Luton Shelton is expected to represent Jamaica when they entertain Chile in Kingston next week.

Premier League a cartel with handful of rich clubs in control - the Star Sheffield

The legal complexities of this are beyond my understanding – but there were articles in the press in January saying that West Ham faced a 'certain points deduction' for the illegal registration of the Argentinians, and the dismay of the press, together with radio and TV correspondents when the verdict was announced in April. It must also be remembered that West Ham were taken over late in 2006, and no doubt clauses were put into the agreement indemnifying the new owners against any litigation charges – so the £5.5million fine may well end up being paid by the previous owners and the club will end up with no punishment at all!
It seems that the Premier League is fast becoming a cartel, with a handful of rich clubs in control and a dozen clubs there just to make up the numbers. The League officials just kowtow to the rich clubs – they need to be reminded that they are the custodians of a professional game with a long history and if they are not prepared to look after the interests of all clubs then they should go.

Already this morning they`ve been linked to Cahill, Darren Bent and Barton to go with their £8m or so splashed out on Parker. The joys of a rich benefactor…

Anyway we`re still pegged that it`s Willy McKay trying to force ours and Villa`s hands early doors so he can have a nice summer holiday in the Caribbean.

Noble delighted by England call-up - WHUFC
31/05/2007 15:22

Mark Noble admitted he was over the moon to be called into the England
Under-21 squad for the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in Holland. "I
am really happy to have been named in the squad," he said. "It was a great
season for me and a great end to the season for the Club. "It's really nice
to be able to top it off by being called up to the Under-21s squad. I can't
wait for the tournament and for the season to start again."
Mark was called into Stuart Pearce's initial 30-man squad and flew out to
Spain to attend a training camp, before finding out he'd made the final 23
for next month's tournament. "With the squad and players we have the chances
of us winning it are pretty high, I'd say. It's going to be a great
experience being out there. Hopefully it will give me the opportunity to
show what I can do on the international stage. "The training camp was a
really great experience. The training was obviously of a very high standard
and I must have done ok to have been picked for the final 23-man squad. It
was a really good to experience training abroad as well, in a different
climate. "The senior squad is my long-term goal. It's every little boy's
dream to be involved in the international set-up when they grow up. "I've
played in every age group for England so far but I'm not getting carried
away - I've not even played a game for the under-21s yet. Hopefully next
year if I continue performing the way I have been, people will continue to
take notice."
Reflecting on the amazing finish to last season, Mark admitted all the drama
took a while to sink in. "It was unbelievable, "he said. "It all went so
quickly. It meant so much to everyone that we stayed in the Premiership.
It's a massive Club with an ambitious Chairman. Beating Arsenal and Man
United twice - on that sort of form we deserved to stay up. "We don't really
care if we get the credit for it or not. We dug ourselves out of a deep hole
and we showed everyone what we're capable of. We stayed up and that's the
main thing. "I can't wait for next season now and for all the build-up to
begin. I'm looking forward to seeing what players we bring in over the
summer too. I hope we start the season the way we finished and I want to
play in every game to help take the Club up to a higher position."

Parker in the bag - KUMB

Scott Parker is set to become Alan Curbishley's first signing of the summer
after agreeing to move to West Ham. Despite a late attempt by neighbours
Tottenham to hijack the deal Parker is all set to sign a four-year contract
with United after a £7m deal - up £500,000 on West Ham's opening offer - was
agreed with current employees Newcastle. The former Charlton man met with
West Ham's Scott Duxbury last night in order to agree personal terms. A
medical is likely to take place tomorrow morning with an announcement to
follow thereafter. 26-year-old Parker - who is expected to replace the
outgoing Nigel Reo-Coker - celebrated the birth of his third child this
week, and is said to be delighted at the prospect of returning to London
after two years in the North East. He moved to Newcastle in a £6.5m deal two
years ago this month after having failed to make an impact at Chelsea where
he spent the preceeding 18 months after moving from Charlton in a £10m deal.

from abroad - particularly England. Manchester City, Wigan, West Ham,
Portsmouth and Middlesbrough were all believed to have been in attendance on
Sunday at Racing Santander when Riga scored twice in a 3-2 Levante victory.
"It is certain for a month now that have been several clubs looking at me
and that want to sign me," Mustapha told AS. "But have not been saying
anything because the first thing was to save Levante. Now I can say yes, the
interest exists and I know that they are going to make an offer soon. "I
just want the best thing for everyone, and I cannot deny that I would like
to play in England. "One of my dreams as a footballer was to be in the
Premier, I could have gone before I joined Levante but I thought it was best
to come to Spain. "Now after two years here, I have fulfilled the objectives
that I gave myself and now I would like to play in England." Mustapha has
two-years left on his contract, but he hopes Levante will not stand in his
way. "I came for free to Levante and I believe I have proved myself as they
expected," he continued. "Now the offers have arrived and they will
duplicate my pay and I just believe this is the best things, especially for
a player who cost nothing."

West Ham to pick up £7m Parker
Staff and agencies
Thursday May 31, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

Scott Parker is on the verge of signing for West Ham for £7m, after the
Hammers fought off late competition from Tottenham. West Ham chief executive
Scott Duxbury was involved in talks with Parker's representatives last
night, after Tottenham had declared their interest in the Newcastle captain.
It is understood from sources close to the player that Parker is set to meet
with West Ham officials today after the two clubs agreed a fee. West Ham
manager Alan Curbishley sees Parker as a potential captain and the ideal
replacement for current skipper Nigel Reo-Coker, who has handed in a
transfer request. Parker, who is celebrating the birth of his third child
this week, is keen on a return to London where his family is based, and a
move to Upton Park would see him link up again with Curbishley, his old boss
at Charlton. The 26-year-old made his England debut in 2003 while playing
under Curbishley before completing a £10m move to Chelsea in January 2004.
At the end of that season Parker was named the Professional Footballers
Association's Young Player of the Year but first-team opportunities grew
increasingly limited at Stamford Bridge, where he was unable to displace
Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele. He moved to Newcastle in the summer of
2005 for £6.5m and was appointed captain at the start of last season.
Newcastle's new manager Sam Allardyce is reported to be eyeing out-of-favour
Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton as a potential replacement for
Parker.

'Gang of Four' want Premier boss to face live debate over Tevez controversy
- This Is London
31.05.07

Richard Scudamore is set to be challenged to a live television debate on the
Carlos Tevez affair at tomorrow's Premier League annual general meeting.
Wigan, Sheffield United, Charlton and Fulham are still threatening legal
action against the Premier League in the row over the eligibility of the
Argentine striker to play for West Ham, and the so-called 'Gang of Four' are
considering the stunt to put pressure on the chief executive. The proposal
would have to be tabled by Fulham or Wigan because Sheffield United and
Charlton have been relegated. Each top-flight club own a share in the
Premier League but the Sheffield club are refusing to give their one back.
They are planning to turn up tomorrow, although they are likely to be denied
entry and told to request a separate meeting. United are leading the action
over Tevez and there will be an arbitration hearing on 18-19 June. Fulham
are also heavily involved but have been told they have to make a separate
claim. The Premier League clubs are expected to approve a move to make their
rule dealing with third-party ownership "more explicit" at tomorrow's
meeting. The League require a minimum of 14 votes to change or amend any of
their regulations and will seek to make Rule U18 more transparent and so
avoid any repeat of the Tevez controversy. West Ham avoided a points
deduction but were fined a record £5.5 million for not revealing details of
'side contracts' between the club and Kia Joorabchian's former company MSI,
who were part owners of Argentine pair Tevez and Javier Mascherano.
Scudamore believes Rule U18 should be made clearer, leaving clubs in no
doubt that 'side contracts' regarding the future sale of players owned by
third parties should be declared at the time of signing. A Premier League
spokesman said: "We are aware of the increasing phenomenon of more South
American players being involved with clubs on loan agreements so we will be
seeking to make this particular rule more explicit."

Reo-Coker in Toon plea - the Sun
By STEVE BRENNER
June 01, 2007

NIGEL REO-COKER has begged Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce to end his West Ham
nightmare. Reo-Coker is desperate to quit Upton Park and would love the
chance to link up with Allardyce at St James' Park. Big Sam, who continues
to track Manchester City bad-boy Joey Barton, tried to land the England
Under-21 skipper for Bolton last season but Hammers boss Alan Curbishley
refused to let him go. Now, with Scott Parker on his way to East London,
Reo-Coker wants a chance to fill the void. New Trotters boss Sammy Lee
continues to keep tabs on the midfielder, 23, who is available for around
£8million. His agent Tony Finnegan said: "Sam Allardyce knows how to get in
contact with Nigel and we would welcome a call. "If Sam said he wanted to
speak, Nigel would be on the train in a shot. It would be very interesting
to see what his plans are for Newcastle."
Meanwhile, Mike Ashley's Toon takeover moved a step closer last night when
the club's board agreed to consider his offer. A statement released to the
Stock Exchange said: "The board of Newcastle United announces that there was
a meeting with Mike Ashley and his team at which there was a useful and
constructive discussion. "The board will now consider its response to the
offer from St James Holdings Ltd." Ashley owns a 41.6 per cent stake in the
club after buying Sir John Hall's shares. He will release a statement to
shareholders next week detailing his vision for Newcastle. Stock Exchange
rules say the 43-year-old must submit a formal takeover bid. He is hopeful
of further progress by the end of next week.

Hammers net £7m Parker - The Sun
By DAVE KIDD
June 01, 2007

WEST HAM will make Scott Parker the highest-paid player in their history
after agreeing a £7million deal with Newcastle. The England midfielder will
earn substantially more than the £72,000 per week the Hammers are paying
their highest earner, Aussie defender Lucas Neill. Parker, 26, is currently
on a family holiday in Portugal but is expected in London for a medical next
week.
Tottenham made an inquiry about Parker but were blown out of the water by
West Ham's wage offer. He was already pulling in upwards of £60,000 at
Newcastle after making the £6.5m switch from Chelsea in 2005. Hammers chief
Eggert Magnusson shelled out massive salaries to capture Neill, Matthew

West Ham's summer spree begins with £7m Parker bid - The Independent
By Alex Lowe
Published: 01 June 2007

West Ham United were last night holding discussions with the Newcastle
United captain, Scott Parker, over a proposed £7m move to Upton Park. It is
understood that West Ham's chief executive, Scott Duxbury, was involved in
talks with Parker's representatives after Spurs had also shown interest in
the England international. Parker would be manager Alan Curbishley's first
signing of the summer. Curbishley has been given significant funds, thought
to be more than £40m, to ensure there is no repeat of last season's
relegation battle and to spearhead a challenge for Europe. Also, reportedly,
on the Hammers' list of targets are the Charlton Athletic striker, Darren
Bent, and Everton's Australian midfielder, Tim Cahill, but the club have not
revealed whether they will retain Carlos Tevez. Parker made his England
debut in 2003 while playing under Curbishley at Charlton before completing a
£10m move to Chelsea in January 2004. Relations between the two were
strained at the time, with Curbishley frustrated by Parker's decision to
leave and the way the move came about. Newcastle's new manager, Sam
Allardyce, is reported to be considering the out-of-favour Manchester City
midfielder Joey Barton as a potential replacement for Parker.

Villa close to winning race for £8m Reo-Coker Stuart James
Friday June 1, 2007
The Guardian

Aston Villa have emerged as favourites to sign Nigel Reo-Coker and are
expected to agree a deal worth about £8m with West Ham United for the
England Under-21 captain next week. Reo-Coker has submitted a transfer
request at West Ham and, although he has been strongly linked with a move to
Tottenham Hotspur, it is understood Villa are close to winning the race for
his signature.

Martin O'Neill returns from holiday today keen to complete the deal, which
would take his spending since arriving at the club last summer beyond £20m.
The Villa manager is set to embark on a major rebuilding programme before
the new season and, with midfield a key area to strengthen, has earmarked
Reo-Coker as the first piece of the jigsaw. It is believed that the
23-year-old is excited by the prospect of playing under O'Neill.

Villa's financial strength in the transfer market and Scott Parker's
anticipated arrival at West Ham should ensure that the deal goes through
smoothly. Parker was last night on the verge of completing a £7m switch from
Newcastle to West Ham to be reunited with his former manager at Charlton,
Alan Curbishley, who regards the 26-year-old as the ideal replacement for
Reo-Coker.

Reo-Coker endured a difficult last season at West Ham and was booed by some
fans only months after coming within minutes of lifting the FA Cup. His form
suffered amid reports that he was unhappy after failing to secure a move to
Arsenal last August but he remained an almost automatic choice and played a
key part in helping the club stay in the Premiership. With Arsenal's
interest cooling, Villa's bright ambitions under O'Neill have proved
attractive to Reo-Coker.

His capture would represent a major coup for Villa and for O'Neill, who has
already lured John Carew and spent £16m on Ashley Young and Stilian Petrov.
The manager is keen to buy another striker and is interested in Craig
Bellamy but Liverpool would have to drop their £12m asking price for the
Wales international.

West Ham's Noble welcomes international call
tribalfooball.com - May 31, 2007

West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble is delighted to have been named in
Stuart Pearce's England U21 squad for this summer's European Championships.
"I am really happy to have been named in the squad," he told whufc.com. "It
was a great season for me and a great end to the season for the Club. "It's
really nice to be able to top it off by being called up to the Under-21s
squad. I can't wait for the tournament and for the season to start again."

I Don't Believe Spurs Wanted Parker - Vital Football

According to the press today, West Ham have fought off late interest from
Spurs to secure the £7million signing of Scott Parker from Newcastle United.
The reports say that West Ham's chief executive, Scott Duxbury as if you
care about the hammers name (!) had late night talks the midfielder's agents
to fend off Spurs. What a load of rubbish. Sorry, you have the chance to
move to London with both clubs. So that part is sorted. Then you have the
chance to go to a club who were nearly relegated or one who are playing in
Europe next season and who are so much on the up it is untrue. So come on,
who do you choose? I don't believe that we've shown an interest, if we had,
we'd have him. Simple as that.

West Ham To Confirm Signing Of Scott Parker Tomorrow - WestHamFans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 31 May, 2007 - 12:50.

Having agreed personal terms, Newcastle's captain Scott Parker will put pen
to paper either this evening or tomorrow morning, his signing will be
subject to a strenuous medical to confirm that the player's current hernia
injury is not a long term issue. The original asking price was £8 Million
with add ons but it seems that Hammers have negotiated a £7 Million fee but
with a 20% stake in any future sell on should the player move to another
club within three years. Not a bad bit of business for a full England
International, and a player with plenty to prove. Having moved from Charlton
to Chelsea for £10 Million, Parker found himself warming the bench and so
accepted the chance to move to Newcastle in a £6.5 Million deal, he was
quickly made captain but found it hard to settle up north and became the
target of abuse of many Toon fans as they saw their season fall apart under
the managership of the now sacked Glen Roeder. A tenacious player well known
to Alan Curbishley who guided his career at Charlton, Parker is a little
like Lee Bowyer in style but has pace and knows how to score goals, his
arrival will cast doubt over Bowyer's future at the club, he may well join
Alan Pardew at Charlton as they attempt to return to the top flight at the
first time of asking.
Hayden Mullins is another destined to make the short journey across town to
the Valley as Curbs begins to wield the axe that will make space available
in the squad for the impending new arrivals. We previously mentioned the
interest Hammers have shown in Tim Cahill, and ironically the key to
bringing him on board might lay with outgoing captain Nigel Reo-Coker, David
Moyes has long been an admirer of NRC and might be tempted to do a player
plus cash deal for his Aussie midfielder who would welcome the chance to
join up with his Australian International team mate Lucas Neill. It is now
quite obvious that none of the big four are really interested in signing
NRC, especially with the players £9 Million valuation, it looks more than
likely that only Villa, Everton and Newcastle represent serious suitors,
food for thought for the man who "saved Hammers from relegation", try
cupping your hand to your ear at your own supporters up north and see what
happens Nigel. - Ed

West Ham are understood to have made an offer for Newcastle captain and
England international Scott Parker. The midfielder, 26, played under Hammers
boss Alan Curbishley when they were both at Charlton and is believed to be
keen on a move to the capital. West Ham are in the market for a central
midfielder with skipper Nigel Reo-Coker set to move on in the summer.
But Curbishley's initial bid is thought to be considerably less than the
£8.5m Newcastle and Sam Allardyce want. Parker spent seven years with
Curbishley at The Valley and made his England debut against Denmark in 2003
before completing a £10m move to Chelsea. But with first-team opportunities
limited at Stamford Bridge, he moved to St James' Park in a £6.5m deal in

struggled to settle in the north-east and would relish a return south. New

PARKER NOW LOOKS WEST HAM-BOUND - Talk Of The Tyne

SCOTT PARKER is on the brink of leaving Newcastle to join West Ham. The
Hammers - who put a bid in for the midfielder yesterday - are now believed
to have agreed a fee in the region of £7 million for Parker. Tottenham
declared a late interest and tried to scupper the bid, but West Ham chief

The Chelsea old boy was United's player of the year in the 2005/06 season

critics insists he does not offer the side enough in an attacking sense, and
Parker is believed to be keen on a return to London, where his wider family

No need for United to feel shame, West Ham were in the wrong - The Star -
Sheffield

I HAVE noticed that the Premier League and to some extent a minority of West
Ham fans are trying to slander our name and shame us, making out that we are
bad losers for 'not going down with dignity'. I am aghast to see that some
Blades are starting to buy into this blatant propaganda. Let us not lose
sight of the fact that it is not Sheffield United who should feel shame.
West Ham are in the wrong on this issue. They knowingly broke rule U18
enabling them to gain an unfair advantage on the field of play obtaining two
world class footballers from Argentina, who under normal circumstances, they
would be unable to afford or acquire. They also broke rule B13. They hid
this from the Premier League. They lied about it and misled the Premier
League to avoid a penalty and to gain an unfair advantage over other teams.
They did not bring it to the attention of the Premier league, as some would
like us to believe. They were discovered and pleaded guilty because they had
to, they had been caught. The independent panel was also at fault. It took
into consideration irrelevant factors in the decision making process – the
time of the year, and, most worryingly, the feelings of West Ham fans. If
the panel had a 'duty of care' to West Ham fans, then it also must take into
consideration the feeling of other fans, Fulham, Wigan and Sheffield United
et al, which it did not. The commission has left itself wide open to the
accusation and possible legal action of unfair discrimination against the
fans of other teams. The Premier League then made matters worse by failing
to establish whether the contract between West Ham and MSI was terminated by
both parties. Recent interviews with Kia Joorabchian indicate not. The panel
ordered the League to terminate the registration of Tevez. Either this did
not happen, or they allowed him to re register outside the transfer window,
which I believe is against the rules. Kevin McCabe should be commended for
standing up to the League, seeking truth and justice, not castigated for
being a bad loser. I also take my hat off to Wigan and Fulham, who have
shown that honour does still exist in football. We have no reason to feel
ashamed .

subject of a bid from the club.
The only potential stumbling block is that the Magpies have valued the
26-year-old at around £8.5million and the Hammers are not thought to be
offering anywhere near that amount. However with Parker, who cost Chelsea
£10million in January 2004 before moving to St James' Park in summer 2005,
looking for a move back to London, West Ham are hopeful of securing a deal.

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is said to be looking at taking Manchester
City's £5.5million midfielder Joey Barton to Tyneside as a replacement.
Meanwhile, a report in the Times claims West Ham have told central defender
Ferdinand and striker Zamora, that they will not be allowed to leave this
close-season. Ferdinand in particular was expected to be on his way after a
falling out with the manager last term, but his end-of-season form alongside
James Collins looked to have saved him.

Defender lined up for contract talks - Clubcall
20070531 08:59

Reading are reportedly planning to offer full-back Nicky Shorey a much
improved contract to ward off interest from clubs like West Ham. The
25-year-old, who joined the Royals in a bargain £25,000 deal six years ago,
still has two years left to run on the three-year deal that he signed at the
start of last season. However, following an excellent debut campaign in the
top flight with the Royals, the vultures are already circling the Madejski
Stadium. West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has been linked with Shorey, while
Tottenham boss Martin Jol is also thought to be pondering a raid for the
former Brentford man, whose form this past season has seen him thrust into
England coach Steve McClaren's squad for Friday's Wembley friendly against
Brazil and next Wednesday's Euro 2008 showdown with Estonia. Royals boss
Steve Coppell will be loathe to lose such a key member of his squad though,
which is why the club are willing to reward him for his fine form with a new
deal. Shorey has confirmed he will enter talks with the Royals after he has
got his international duty and wedding over with as he prepares to marry his
fiancee, Emily, on Saturday. He said: "I'm just thinking about England.
After the honeymoon I'll sit down with Reading and see where we go from
there."

Champions league or bust for deluded Reo-Coker - all3points.com
31st May 2007
By Dan Halton

Having handed in a transfer request West Ham's captain has played his last
game for the club but will not be sorely missed by Dan Halton.

"Every action has a reaction, and you have to be careful with your actions
and think about what you are doing and how it will affect other people." -
Reo-Coker speaking to the Sunday Times, 7 May 2006

There's a fine line between ambition and arrogance. Over the course of the
past year Nigel Reo-Coker has displayed far too much of the latter. An
energetic and vital cog in the West Ham machinery that impressed in their
first year back in the Premiership, he should have been buckling down for
more of the same come the start of last season but instead threw his toys
out of the pram when the club allegedly rebuffed enquiries from Arsenal and
Manchester United without informing him.

His head suitably turned, performances on the pitch deteriorated to the
extent that fans and ex-players justifiably turned against him. Only the
bigger games seemed to interest him, ironically scoring his only goal of a
wretched season against Manchester United before arrogantly cupping his ear
to the Bobby Moore Stand in angry non-celebration. Yet the captain's armband
stayed with him – a decision Alan Pardew was to regret when he was sacked
after a dreadful start to the season. If your captain has lost interest in
driving the club forward then the rest of ship will follow.

"I can confirm that Nigel has handed in a transfer request. I am surprised
as captain he is being allowed to leave." - Agent Tony Finnigan, 26
May 2007

Alan Curbishley took over from Pardew but undeterred Reo-Coker still wanted
out and submitted a transfer request in January, making his intentions
crystal clear. When it was turned down and the transfer window had shut
quotes attributed to the midfielder suddenly appeared in the media stating
his desire to help West Ham stay in the Premiership. A deal had obviously
been struck. In return for keeping the captaincy and doing what he is paid
to do the club would allow him to leave in the summer. Not one West Ham fan
can have blinked at the announcement this week from the Reo-Coker camp that
he had played his last game for the club.

"I am a very loyal person but to play at my best I need to be happy. I made
a promise to West Ham fans that I would help keep this club in the Premier
League and I have done that." -
Reo-Coker after the 1-0 win at Old Trafford, 13 May 2007

Curbishley's despair at the Baby Bentley culture he discovered at West Ham
pointed the finger squarely at the likes of Reo-Coker. One look at his
cringeworthy MySpace website tells you all you need to know about the man.
One-season wonder, big-time charlie, the epitome of the selfish and deluded
Premiership generation. There's a lot of names you can call some players but
true professionals perform season after season, feel privileged to be given
the club captaincy and earn respect over a number of years. West Ham stayed
in the Premier League but you will find a queue of players who contributed
to the cause ahead of our beloved captain. I find it hard to believe the
attitude let alone the ordinary form of Reo-Coker will have impressed men
such as Arsene Wenger or Alex Ferguson who are notoriously meticulous in
their attention to detail when it comes to potential players' personalities
and backgrounds.

"At the end of the day he never felt wanted but I am sure he will have a
bright future elsewhere." - Finnigan again

Not content with being plucked from the obscurity of Milton Keynes in 2004
to play in front of 35,000 fans at Upton Park as opposed to one man and his
dog at the National Hockey Stadium, Reo-Coker holds the honour of being the
youngest captain West Ham has had since Bobby Moore. An honour he has
tarnished over the past season with his childish actions. Promotion to the
Premiership in 2005 saw Reo-Coker flourish and having missed out on a place
in the World Cup party for Germany last summer his stock could not have been
higher. A time to repay the faith Pardew and the fans had in him from the
start perhaps? Not for Nigel.

"Money does talk now. I'm prepared for that. If I have to move and my career
lies elsewhere eventually, so be it." - Sunday Times interview, 7 May 2006

West Ham was simply a stepping stone for him. He does not have the quality
nor personality to demand the Champions League football he so craves. He can
tackle, track back and deliver a safe pass sideways but ostensibly he is an
ordinary footballer who is a long way off the finished article. A midfielder
who doesn't score enough goals and picks up too many yellow cards will have
to do better to attract the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United. The
latest is that he is holding out for one of these two to step in amidst
interest from more realistic suitors in Aston Villa, Newcastle and
Tottenham. No doubt his agent and self-confessed guardian Tony Finnigan has
inflated the Reo-Coker ego to such an extent that anything less than a
top-four team would be seen as disrespect. I mean this man is the England
Under 21 captain…

"A general is the safeguard of the nation. When this support is in place,
the nation will certainly be strong. When this support is not in place, the
nation will certainly not be strong." - Sun Tzu from the Art of War

So it's goodbye to the numerous misplaced passes, poor final balls,
multitude of yellow cards, turning in performances on a whim, silly dance
celebrations, dismissive waves to the crowd, cupped-ear arrogance of the
goal against Man U and having a captain whose loyalty is only to himself.
Nigel often quotes the Art of War as being an inspiration to him as a
leader. Time for him to blow the dust off that book for his next career
move.

Curbs says don't believe the hype - Harlow Citizen
By Tess McDermott

WEST Ham boss Alan Curbishley has told fans to ignore the heightening
transfer speculation in the press. The club has been linked to a series of
high-priced targets including Eidur Gudjohnsen, Craig Bellamy, Darren Bent,
Tal Ben-Haim and Ecuadorian Carlos Tenorio, with up to a dozen players
speculated to be leaving the Hammers in the summer in what has been quoted
as a £40m squad overhaul. But Curbishley said: "People are assuming and just
writing what they want. Of course there will be some changes, there are at
every club in the summer. But you have to be sensible and a lot of what is
written is just speculation." The manager was on holiday last week and
returned to business on Tuesday with a meeting with Eggert Magnusson. He
said: "I am sitting down with the chairman almost everyday and we will do
the right thing for this club. As I have said in the past, you will know
who's coming in when they're here sitting beside me. That's how I do
business."
Magnusson told the West Ham website: "There is bound to be a lot of
speculation over the summer about our playing squad. It is normal in a
transfer window - who is going, who we want to bring in. "We are ambitious
for this club and what we can achieve next season. We want to strengthen the
squad and to build on the positives of the 2006/07 season. I'm proud of what
the club has achieved and now we can move forward. "We will work hard over
the summer to prepare for next season and that includes keeping our best
players who want to play for us." He cited the new contract for Yossi
Benayoun as a sign of the club's commitment to its players, saying: "We are
very ambitious and Yossi is a big part of our plans. "We are looking forward
to bringing in exciting new signings but we must also make sure we keep hold
of the hugely talented players we already have."

Dailly delighted to be back in the fold - WHUFC
30/05/2007 09:00

Christian Dailly has revealed that he had to rush from a beach holiday in
the Algarve to answer the call from his country this week. The Hammers
defender was on holiday with his family when Scotland coach Alex McLeish
handed him a late call-up for their friendly against Austria tonight and a
vital Euro 2008 qualifier against the Faroe Islands next week - after he had
originally been left out of the squad. "I was in the Algarve for half-term
when I got the call and flew from Faro to Stansted to make it here," reveals
Christian. "By now, everyone will know what it means to me to play for my
country. All my stuff was in a locker at West Ham so I had to ask our
liaison officer, Richard Simpson, to get some boots for me which he bought
in a sports shop in town and I'll have to cope. "I was gutted to say the
least when I was left out. I now have a game to look forward to and that's
all I wanted. I've played in the reserves every week and played in the
testimonial against Northampton. "I was chilling out on a beach but my mind
is right and I'm ready to play. I was annoyed to be left out but I made a
vow to myself that I would get back in and I have."

Transfer news: a busy week ahead? - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 30th May 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham United could be set to make their first major signings of the
summer within the next few days. Alan Curbishley - supported by the biggest
transfer war chest ever handed to a United manager - is ready to begin
spending the millions given him by Chairman Eggert Magnusson, who has been
in negotiations with a number of targets during the past fortnight. The main
target appears to be Newcastle captain Scott Parker, who is ready to return
to London after just a year in the North East where he has failed to settle.
Parker - who previously worked under Curbishley at Charlton - is expected to
replace Nigel Reo-Coker, who could be heading to St James Park in a swap
deal although a number of other Premiership clubs - including Tottenham and
Everton - are keeping tabs on the wantaway United midfielder.
Another target - Manchester City's Joey Barton - is thought to want a move
to London, giving the Hammers the lead over other potential suitors such as
Newcastle. The Hammers are thought to be looking at both Parker and Barton,
rather than one or the other. Both are likely to cost around £8m.
Meanwhile Charlton's Darren Bent is currently mulling over offers from both
West Ham United and Tottenham. Although Spurs can offer European football,
Bent is thought to favour a move to Upton Park on the basis that he will
play more first team football.
The Hammers are said to have offered a cash plus player deal, with either
Marlon Harewood or Hayden Mullins likely to move to the Valley in return for
Bent and around £8.5m. Other players also thought to be in the frame are
Reading left-back Nickey Shorey, Middlesbrough's Mark Viduka and Monaco's
Yaya Toure - younger brother of Arsenal's Kolo Toure. Rumours linking the
Hammers with moves for Chelsea's Claude Makelele and Charlton's Luke Young
are thought to be wide of the mark.

Hammers trio get the nod - KUMB
Filed: Wednesday, 30th May 2007
By: Matthew O'Greel

England under-21 manager Stuart Pearce has named three Hammers in his 23-man
European Championship squad. The European under-21 tournament takes place in
Holland next month, and West Ham will be represented by three players -
Nigel Reo-Coker, Anton Ferdinand and Mark Noble. The final squad of 23 was
reduced from the preliminary 30-man squad named earlier this month. Noble,
who earned his first inclusion at under-21 level in that selection has done
particularly well to retain his place in favour of some more experienced
players. Under-21 captain Nigel Reo-Coker - who was 23 earlier this month -
qualifies to play as he was only 21 when qualification for the tournament
began - as was 22-year-old Anton Ferdinand.

England U21 squad

Alnwick (Tottenham), Carson (Liverpool), Hart (Man City); Baines (Wigan),
Cahill (Aston Villa), Ferdinand (West Ham Utd), Hoyte (Arsenal), Onuoha (Man
City), Rosenior (Fulham), Taylor (Newcastle), Whittingham (Cardiff); Bentley
(Blackburn), Huddlestone (Tottenham), Milner (Newcastle), Noble (West Ham
Utd), Reo-Coker (West Ham Utd), Richardson (Man Utd), Routledge (Tottenham);
Derbyshire (Blackburn), Lita (Reading), Nugent (Preston), Vaughan (Everton),
Young (Aston Villa).

Hammers in Parker bid - KUMB

By: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham United have made an £8.5m bid for Newcastle captain Scott Parker,
according to SkySports. Parker joined Newcastle in a £6.5m switch from
Chelsea although failed to settle in the North East. Despite being made club
captain he never endeared himself to the impatient Newcatle crowd, and has
been looking to return South for some time. There has been no confirmation
from either club as of yet. More on this as it happens.

Hammers move for Parker - Sky
By Peter ORourke - Created on 30 May 2007

Sky Sports News understands West Ham have tabled an £8.5million bid for
Newcastle captain Scott Parker. Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is believed to
be willing to let Parker move on as he looks to raise money for his own
transfer plans. West Ham chief Alan Curbishley is keen to sign Parker as he
is a big fan of the England international from their time together at
Charlton. Parker, who is currently recovering from a hernia operation,
endured a difficult season at Newcastle last term after coming in for some
criticism from his own fans. Curbishley is in the market for a new
midfielder with Nigel Reo-Coker expected to move on after handing in a
transfer request. Newcastle are believed to be lining up a move for
Manchester City star Joey Barton as a possible replacement for Parker should
he leave St James' Park.

Hammers table bid for Magpies' skipper Parker - Soccernet

West Ham are understood to have made a bid for Newcastle captain and England
international Scott Parker. But the Hammers' offer is thought to be
considerably less than the £8.5million which has been reported. West Ham
manager Alan Curbishley is in the market for a central midfielder with
captain Nigel Reo-Coker set to leave Upton Park this summer after handing in
a transfer request. Parker, 26, is thought to be keen on a move back to
London and a switch to West Ham would see him link up again with Curbishley,
his old boss at Charlton. Parker spent seven years with Curbishley at The
Valley and made his England debut against Denmark in 2003 before completing
a £10million move to Chelsea. With first team opportunities limited at
Stamford Bridge, Parker moved to St James' Park in 2005 and was made
Newcastle captain last summer. New manager Sam Allardyce has been linked
with out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton as a potential
replacement for Parker.

Viduka in, Scott out - The Sun

MARK VIDUKA has agreed to join Newcastle — but Scott Parker is set to leave
in an £8.5million move to West Ham. Aussie hitman Vid will be Sam
Allardyce's first high-profile signing since he took the Toon job at the end
of the season. Viduka, 31, was out of contract at Middlesbrough and rejected
a new £40,000-a-week two-year deal to stay. It is a huge blow to Boro boss
Gareth Southgate as Viduka has proved a consistent goalscorer at the
Riverside, as he was for his previous clubs Celtic and Leeds. Viduka, who
managed to bag 14 Premiership goals this term in an injury-hit season on
Teesside, had also attracted strong interest from Portsmouth. West Ham have
tabled an £8.5m bid for Toon skipper Parker — who cost £6.5m from Chelsea
two years ago. The England midfielder, 26, used to play for Hammers boss
Alan Curbishley at Charlton and fancies a return to London.

The Screamer: West Ham in battle to sign £8m Parker - Daily Mail
CONTRIBUTORS: MARTIN HARDY and IAN LADYMAN
Last updated at 22:36pm on 30th May 2007

Scott Parker is on his way back to London after West Ham tabled a bid of
£8million for the Newcastle midfielder, although Alan Curbishley faces
competition from Tottenham. Parker who played under Curbishley at Charlton,
can leave St James' Park after a frustrating two-year spell on Tyneside, but
his future is far from clear. Although West Ham are in pole position to
sign the £40,000-a-week midfielder, Tottenham's interest has also been
revived after they abandoned plans to sign Hammers skipper Nigel Reo-Coker.
Defender Lucas Neill could move in the opposite direction to Parker.
However, Newcastle face competition from Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester
United for the versatile Australia full-back, who joined West Ham in
January.
New Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce wants to push the Parker deal through
quickly to start an overhaul of his squad. He is ready to step up his
interest in troubled Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton to replace
Parker, and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has dismissed reports he has
fallen out of love with the club after a season of wrangling with manager
Jose Mourinho.
Abramovich said: "My relationship with Chelsea has not changed and I
wouldn't want to change anything." Mourinho may be asking the Russian for
funds to try to land West Ham's Carlos Tevez and Valencia's David Villa, who
together would cost around £60m. Hernan Crespo will remain with Inter Milan
for another year on loan, while AC Milan are interested in Andriy
Shevchenko.

West Ham at the head of queue to sign Parker - Times Online
Gary Jacob and Oliver Kay

A frenzied start to football's transfer window promises to leave managers,
chairmen, agents and supporters in a daze. Tottenham Hotspur captured Gareth
Bale for a fee that could rise to £10 million from Southampton on Friday,
but that deal has been overshadowed by Manchester United's entry into the
market.

United have signalled their intention to retain the Barclays Premiership
trophy by agreeing deals to sign Nani, the Sporting Lisbon winger, and
Anderson, the FC Porto playmaker, and The Times's comprehensive guide to the
summer sales keeps you up to date with the latest moves and transfer
targets.

José Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, will be given up to £50 million to wrest
the title from United and win the Champions League. But new owners of other
clubs are likely to flex their muscles with Aston Villa, West Ham United and
Manchester City planning to speculate to accumulate.

West Ham offered about £8 million for Scott Parker, the Newcastle United
midfield player, last night. Parker moved to Newcastle for £6.5 million from
Chelsea two years ago. Tottenham have expressed an interest in the player
but his high wages are a problem.

West Ham have told Anton Ferdinand and Bobby Zamora that they will not be
allowed to leave. Ferdinand, the defender, has not always seen eye-to-eye
with Alan Curbishley and is wanted by Tottenham and Newcastle. But
Ferdinand's blossoming partnership with James Collins persuaded his manager
that he has a future at Upton Park.

Cahill Next On Hammers Shopping List - West Ham Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 30 May, 2007 - 19:53.

Having virtually secured the signing of Scott Parker from Newcastle in a
deal that will eventually be worth £9 Million, West Ham have moved quickly
to try to secure the services of Everton's Tim Cahill, another Australian
International to join Lucas Neill at the Boleyn. Reports that Mark 'the
duke' Viduka is another Hammers target are however way off the mark if you
will excuse the pun. Signing an ageing striker does not fit into the current
ethos of signing players who are at their prime or approaching it, Viduka
has definitely seen better days and would represent a backward step.
Continuing with the OZ connection, our correspondent over there has been
staying in the same hotel as the Socceroos and thinks that Lucas Neill has
been chatting to Harry Kewell about how exciting things are going to be next
season. Now Hammers fans are fiercely loyal to the club and could fear
either a team full of Aussies and Taffs or a team full of ex-Charlton might
detract from the club's shared identity, but then what 'shared identity' did
the players who started the season have other than queueing up at Jack
Barclays to buy their Bentleys?

Newcastle to sacrifice Parker for Man City's Barton
tribalfooball.com - May 30, 2007

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has reportedly set his sights on Joey Barton in
a move that could see Scott Parker on the move to West Ham. According to
reports, Allardyce is willing to take a gamble on Manchester City bad boy
Barton, who has been told he can leave Eastlands for the right price. But
any move for Barton is expected to come at the expense of the Magpies club
captain Parker, who has been a transfer target for Hammers boss Alan
Curbishley since January. At the time any possible move fell through due to
West Ham's relegation fight, but it now seems a reunion with Parker's former
Charlton manager could be on the cards. If Curbishley was to swoop for his
former Charlton captain, Allardyce would be reportedly prepared to let him
go for £8million. The Magpies manager is then tipped to use those funds to
launch a bid for Barton, who comes with a £5.5million price tag.

Reo-Coker is ready to roll - Newham Recorder
30 May 2007

NIGEL REO-COKER is resisting the overtures of Tottenham and playing a
waiting game in the hope of a move to Manchester United or Arsenal this
summer, writes NEIL TRAINIS. The West Ham midfielder and club captain handed
in a transfer request at the weekend having felt he was not going to be a
part of Alan Curbishley's long-term plans at Upton Park. It is rumoured that
Spurs have earmarked the 23-year-old as a potential transfer target but
according to the player's adviser Tony Finnigan, his client, who spent last
season embroiled in a relegation tussle, is keen on playing for a club in
the Champions League. "I can confirm that Nigel has handed in a transfer
request. I am surprised as captain he is being allowed to leave," Finnigan
said. "He is going and there is a lot of interest."
A figure around the £9m mark has been mentioned in some quarters as being
enough to tempt the east London club to part with Reo-Coker, who last year
was within seconds of becoming the first Hammers captain to lift the FA Cup
since Billy Bonds in 1980. Reo-Coker, however, was thought to have been
frustrated with the decision of West Ham officials and previous manager Alan
Pardew to deny him a move to Arsenal or Old Trafford on transfer deadline
day last year and there have been rumours of the player's unrest ever since.
In the subsequent months, Reo-Coker was targeted by a section of the Upton
Park faithful, who held him responsible for the club's slump down the
Premiership table which culminated in Pardew's sacking. A string of
below-par displays were perceived by some to be lethargy on the part of
Reo-Coker and he was on the end of vitriolic criticism from former Hammer
Julian Dicks who, following the 6-0 New Year's Day Premiership defeat at
Reading, insisted he had "spat his dummy out" in the wake of the Hammers'
decision not to grant him a transfer.
Finnigan, nonetheless, suggested that Reo-Coker felt the time had come for a
new challenge after just over three years at West Ham following his arrival
from Wimbledon, and as Curbishley is understood to be planning the future
minus a player held in high esteem by numerous top flight managers, it is
likely Reo-Coker will begin next season somewhere else. "At the end of the
day he never felt wanted but I am sure he will have a bright future
elsewhere," Finnigan said of Reo-Coker, who also received hate mail from
supporters. Manchester United's interest in him may have receded in light
of their probable signing of Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich but there
will be no lack of interest in Reo-Coker, with a bidding war expected in the
summer. Alan Curbishley was given a boost with the news that Israeli
midfielder Yossi Benayoun has signed a new five-year contract, tying him to
the Hammers until 2012, and chairman Eggert Magnusson hinted that more
signings are imminent. "We are very ambitious and Yossi is a big part of our
plans. I'm very pleased to have agreed terms to keep him at the club for
five more years," he said. "We are looking forward to bringing in exciting
new signings but we must also make sure we keep hold of the hugely talented
players we already have."

Noble to make his Mark on international stage - Newham Recorder
30 May 2007

YOUNG Hammers star Mark Noble has been rewarded for his excellent form by
winning an England call-up. The 20-year-old midfielder will join team-mates
Anton Ferdinand and Nigel Reo-Coker in the squad for the UEFA under-21
Championships in Holland next month. Noble hopes to make his England debut
in a friendly against Slovakia at Norwich next Tuesday. Meanwhile, Hammers
boss Alan Curbishley has been given a boost with the news that Israeli
midfielder Yossi Benayoun has signed a new five-year contract, tying him to
the Hammers until 2012, and chairman Eggert Magnusson hinted that more
signings are imminent. "We are very ambitious and Yossi is a big part of our

Parker Bound For West Ham - newcastlemad.co.uk
By Nu Mad Wednesday 30th May 2007

Despite the defence being Sam Allardyce's priority, he could be set for a
reshuffle in Newcastle's midfield, with Scott Parker looking likely to be
joining West Ham. The ex-Chelsea midfielder has hardly settled on Tyneside,
and he knows full well the Toon Army have not taken him to their hearts. And
with Allardyce setting his sights on Manchester City's Joey Barton, Parker
is the obvious one to make way. Parker has been a transfer target for Alan
Curbishley and West Ham since January. At the time any possible move fell
through due to West Ham's relegation fight, but it now seems a reunion with
Parker's former Charlton manager could be on the cards. If Curbishley was
to swoop for his former Charlton captain Allardyce would be prepared to let
him go for £8million, or include Anton Ferdinand in a deal. West Ham offered
Nigel Reo-Coker in a swap deal, and the England Under-21 international is
certainly on his way having expressed his desire to leave the club. But
Reo-Coker is not the sort of player to impress Allardyce, because he goes
missing too often when the going gets tough.

Noble reward for Hammers rookie - Teamtalk

On day two of the TEAMtalk Soccers, Mark Holmes steps to the podium to read
out the nominations and present the award for Rookie of the Year. The likes
of Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba and Dimitar Berbatov have been lavished
with praise for their performances in the Premiership but TEAMtalk has kept
on eye on those youngsters that have crept under the radar over the past
nine months.
Arsenal's conveyerbelt of talent continues to churn out top players, but the
likes of Abou Diaby and Denilson miss out on the contenders list, while Jon
Obi Mikel, Lee Cattermole, Micah Richards and Manuel Fernandes also fall
just short.

The first of the five contenders is Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor. The
Villans unearthed another promising youngster in the shape of Craig Gardner
and snared Watford's Ashley Young, another player who can count himself
unfortunate not to be considered for the award. But it is Agbonlahor who
has really impressed. The forward was farmed out on loan last season but has
been a virtual ever-present under Martin O'Neill this season and was one of
the main reasons behind Villa's superb start to the campaign. Things have
gone downhill for O'Neill's men since then but Agbonlahor has continued to
impress, scoring 10 goals on his way to honours for England Under-21s.

Another forward to impress this season is Matt Derbyshire and the Blackburn
man is the second contender for this award. The 21-year-old turned down a
move to Manchester United to join Rovers from non-league Great Harwood Town
in 2003 and his decision has paid dividends. He scored his first Blackburn
goal on New Year's Day and never looked back from there, notching four goals
in his next five games including a brace in the FA Cup against Luton.
Derbyshire was even on target against eventual champions United and joined
Agbonlahor in gaining a call for England Under-21s.

The third contender is Red Devils goalkeeper Ben Foster. The former Stoke
stopper was not deemed ready for the number one jersey by Sir Alex Ferguson,
but he is likely to be wearing it next term after a hugely impressive start
to Premiership life with Watford. The 24-year-old had already won plenty of
fans after his first season on loan at Vicarage Road, but his second has
seen him emerge as a real contender to Paul Robinson's England place. Tipped
to become the best 'keeper in the world by Aidy Boothroyd, Foster could well
turn out to be one of Ferguson's most inspired signings ever.

The runner-up for this prestigious award is Arsenal left-back Gael Clichy.
Much was made of Ashley Cole's controversial switch to Chelsea but it is
testament to Clichy that the England star has not been missed at the
Emirates Stadium. Some may argue the 21-year-old can not be classed as a
'rookie' after a clutch of Premiership appearances over the previous two
seasons but his transgression from Cole's understudy to the Gunners'
first-choice left-back sees him on the list. His blistering pace and ability
to overlap has seen him become one of the most feared full-backs in the
division and he will surely go on to become a France regular over the coming
years, saving Arsene Wenger a fortune in the process.

Now, the contenders are out of the way so it's time to honour the young man
who has impressed above anyone else, West Ham's Mark Noble.

Carlos Tevez was largely credited with saving the Hammers from certain
relegation, but the Upton Park faithful will tell you Noble has been just as
instrumental. The midfielder spent the first half of the season on loan at
Ipswich and it is no coincidence West Ham's incredible season-saving form
began when he was introduced to the team in March. That game ended in a
thrilling 4-3 defeat to Tottenham but Noble, who opened the scoring, did
enough to convince Alan Curbishley he was worth a regular starting spot and
the 20-year-old played in every one of the remaining nine games. The Hammers
won seven of those fixtures to ensure their Premiership status for another
year, with Noble combining with Tevez to see off the likes of Arsenal,
Everton and Manchester United. Noble's personal high point came in the
penultimate game of the season when his spectacular volley helped sink
Bolton 3-1 and lift his side out of the relegation places for the first time
in five months. The Hammers completed the job at Old Trafford which
thankfully gives us the chance to see more of one of England's top prospects
next season.

Big Sam to trigger midfield shuffle - TeamTalk

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has reportedly set his sights on Joey Barton
in a move that could see Scott Parker on the move to West Ham. From the
comfort of his holiday home in France, Allardyce has reportedly set about
orchestrating a mass shake up involving some of the Premiership's top
midfielders. According to reports, Allardyce is willing to take a gamble on
Manchester City bad boy Barton, who has been told he can leave Eastlands for
the right price. But any move for Barton is expected to come at the expense
of the Magpies club captain Parker, who has been a transfer target for
Hammers boss Alan Curbishley since January. At the time any possible move
fell through due to West Ham's relegation fight, but it now seems a reunion
with Parker's former Charlton manager could be on the cards. If Curbishley
was to swoop for his former Charlton captain, Allardyce would be reportedly
prepared to let him go for £8million.
The Magpies manager is then tipped to use those funds to launch a bid for
Barton, who comes with a £5.5million price tag. Despite his off-field
problems, Big Sam is ready to take a risk on Barton and clearly feels he can
get the best out of the midfielder, who is also wanted by a clutch of other
clubs. And should West Ham seal a deal for Parker, the Hammers are then
expected to sanction the departure of their own captain, Nigel Reo-Coker,
who has expressed a desire to leave Upton Park and is being tipped to join
Tottenham.

Soon they'll be the boys who are 86! - Newham Recorder
30 May 2007

THE Boys of '86 were back on familiar ground last week for their annual
football fun day at Upton Park, writes STEVE BACON. Eight teams of Hammers
fanatics battled it out with their heroes, before joining them for a
fundraising function in the evening. The players from West Ham's best-ever
league campaign were: Paul Brush, George Parris, Ray Stewart, Allan
McKnight, Paul Hilton, Tony Gale, Neil Orr, Alan Dickens, Greg Campbell,
Alvin Martin, Tony Cottee, Frank McAvennie, Geoff Pike, Steve Potts, Paul
Allen and Paul Goddard. Alan Devonshire was the manager for the day, while
Phil Parkes co-ordinated events. Looking a little slower than in their
prime, one wag commented: "Soon they'll be the boys who are 86!" Several
celebrities turned out for the day, including hard-man actor Ray Winstone
(pictured left) and TV handyman Tommy Walsh (pictured below in the boys'
team) who played in goal. Former London's Burning star Glenn Murphy was also
in action for one of the fans' teams.

Daggers and Orient set to face Hammers - Newham Recorder
30 May 2007

THIS year's Premiership campaign might have reached its dramatic climax just
18 days ago but for West Ham, thoughts have already turned to the 2007-8
season. This week saw the announcement of the Hammers' pre-season friendlies
and they have certainly thrown up some interesting clashes. Having returned
from a well-earned break on July 2, Alan Curbishley's men will take on
Football League new boys and Hammers neighbours Dagenham & Redbridge at
Victoria Road on July 14 in veteran Daggers keeper Tony Roberts'
testimonial. Following a week overseas, another local derby, this time
against Leyton Orient, will ensue on July 24 for O's boss Martin Ling's
testimonial, while the following night a mixture of first team regulars and
reserves will visit former Hammer Martin Allen's MK Dons. As part of
Southend United's centenary celebrations, West Ham will make the trip to the
east coast to play the Shrimpers on July 28 and three days later they will
visit former assistant manager Peter Grant's Norwich City. Curbishley will
have the last chance to run the rule over his charges as the Hammers
complete their pre-season against a prestige but as yet unnamed opponent on
August 4, just a week before the big kick-off.

Young set to join Hammers Wed, May 30 2007 10:58 - EatSleepSport

West Ham are favourites to sign Charlton full-back Luke Young following
claims Portsmouth have pulled out of the race for his services. The England
international right-back has been heavily linked with a move away from the
Addicks following their relegation to the Championship at the end of last
season. And, despite Portsmouth being the initial front runners for his
signature, it now looks like Hammers boss Alan Curbishley will move to
reunite himself with Young who he managed at the Valley before leaving at
the end of the 2005-06 campaign. Pompey's chief executive Peter Storrie is
claimed to have ruled out his side's interest which means West Ham are in
the clear to complete a £3million swoop this summer. Young almost joined the
Hammers last summer, but concerns over an ankle injury put the breaks on
that, however he has not suffered any more problems with that in the past
season and Curbishley could now move to take him to Upton Park. Should a
deal go through it could spell the end of former Manchester United youngster
Jonathan Spector's Hammers' stint.

Parkers A Go Go But Beckhams A No No For West Ham - West Ham Fans.org
Submitted by Neville Nixon on 30 May, 2007 - 11:06.

Scott Parker's move to West Ham took a step further today with negotiations
being opened between Hammers and Newcastle, the possibility of a player plus
cash or even a straight swap of both club captains could well be in the
offing, Parker has long expressed the desire to come back to the smoke and
Reo-Coker has long expressed the desire to be idolised, so a move would suit
both players and their clubs.
Thank god for David Beckham, he is the only football element that has proved
to be able to take the mantle of head line bearer from the mighty Hammers,
reports that he might become a loanee border on the hysterical to the
downright laughable, especially those linking him "wiv the club I grew up
near", why on earth would West Ham want the Beckham circus at the Boleyn?
Having occupied more column inches in the last year than the club had in the
last ten years combined, Chairman Eggert Magnusson and his manager Alan
Cubishley will be looking forward to a season of steady progress, not a
media scrutinised roller coaster, once a decade is more than enough. There
is no doubt that Becks is still a great player, but a Hammer? I think not. -

Blades braced for two-year legal fight - The Star - Sheffield

SHEFFIELD United's legal battle with the Premiership could drag on for up to
two years, it has emerged. The Bramall Lane club, who are appealing against
the League's decision not to deduct West Ham points following a serious
breach of transfer regulations, are scheduled to hold further meetings with
their lawyers before the FAPL's forthcoming AGM. United have already served
notice they will not relinquish their membership at the meeting, and The
Star understands they are prepared to pursue the issue until 2009 if
necessary to ensure justice is served. Next month an arbitration panel will
examine the thinking behind the PL's failure to impose anything more than a
fine on West Ham who were found guilty of breaking the rules governing
third-party ownership of players. United have appointed one member of the
three-man committee which will not only investigate the validity of that
punishment but, also, look at why the PL refused to cancel Carlos Tevez's
registration despite receiving permission from the original commission to do
exactly that. But even if the panel finds in United's favour, the matter
could then find itself referred to the courts if PL executives fail to
restore their top-flight status - a process which can be notoriously slow.
The fact that Blades plc chairman Kevin McCabe and his board of directors
are prepared to go to such lengths illustrates the depth of feeling which
exists within the lower reaches of the PL - and puts paid to the theory that
United will lose heart when next season's fixtures are unveiled on June 14.
Meanwhile, Bramall Lane legend Tony Currie believes Bryan Robson's
appointment as manager could prevent United enduring a sluggish start to the
campaign. "When a team goes down there is usually a bit of a hangover," the
former England international said. "It's only natural because things can be
on a bit of a low but I don't think that will be the case here because
everyone will be desperate to impress the new manager.
